Reviews (page 3 of 8)

On first impression when i got this, i was like not another brit punk rock. But surprised at how good they sounded. Favorite track: Drowners other picks: so young, animal nitrate, breakdown, next life

Holds up pretty well. I think I might just like Dog Man Star a tad more. Some of the production is a little muddy.

Been on a listening streak of just "meh" albums, so to hear this was a welcome surprise. Absolutely dig the guitar on that first track, don't know what they're using, but man the sound of it makes me want more guitar leading songs, or perhaps a solo or two. It's just so clear and concise sounding. Overall solid album, the guitarist did the heavy lifting here.

I’m not sure why, but this album cover feels more famous than the tracks themselves. I guess it was released in the early 90’s where there was a hell of a lot of gay stigma, so I’m sure there was some controversy around this. Surprisingly, I only knew one track off the album, Animal Nitrate, which is an ear worm that still gets regular play on the radio (in fact, after listening today, I put on Absolute Radio and it was playing there). On a different note, I always mix up Suede and the Manic Street Preachers. I don’t know why.

Some stand out moments mixed with some generic ones. Were there fewer 90s British alternative albums, this might get a 5.

Wasn’t sold on a glam update for the 90s, but I was surprised by how solid this was.

Better than any of the Oasis albums on this list

An album that really wants to be peak glam rock Bowie Two songs that absolutely hit that high water mark (Animal Nitrate and Metal Mickey) and a load of others that aren’t too far below that

Maybe better bc I listened to the remastered version of the album?

British rock gets me

Wonderful surprise. Very listenable, well-crafted songs with some originality in them. The singer's voice cracks sometimes, which I'm not sure I like. I could listen 2 times in a row! 4.2

What a banger. This was just before my time, but their next album was peak britpop and so i loved this band. I saw them last year live and these songs still slap and Brett still has it. There is some album filler but there are enough quality songs to make this real fun. Shout out to my sister Katie who introduced me to them.

Solid Britpop guitar-driven sound, not completely sold on the vocals but enjoyable on the whole.

High 4 Tight album with Nitrate and Breakdown standing out

What's not to love about Brit-pop? Even more accurate, what's not to love about early 90's Brit-pop?

Good stuff!

Surprisingly good for what seemed to just be another britpop new wave type album

Infectious, exciting and so effortlessly cool. Vocals are so reminiscent of Bowie, guitar sounds like Johnny Marr through a lawn mower, and bass is surprisingly melodic throughout. This is the side of britpop so often overlooked and underrated. Best Tracks: - Pantomime Horse - Animal Nitrate - The Drowners Worst Tracks: - The Next Life - Moving Rating: 8/10

Charming and underrated (on this site at least, thanks to the many ignorant Americans that get offended at the mere presence of post-70s UK bands) One of the best Britpop entries on this list. Arguably not as great as its followup, but also a little more straightforward and less pretentious.

Me gusta

This album feels so much like the '90s, I can almost smell the stale cigarette smoke. It's a pensive, melancholy album all the way through, with dome very lovely moments. They don't make things quite like this anymore. Favorite track: "Sleeping Pills"

unlike any other britpop album I've heard. this barely even sounds like britpop to me and that's a good thing if i'm being honest very interesting sound-wise. glam rock vocals over these atmospheric psych-rock instrumentals. i really fw this, I haven't heard many album like this. I would totally give this a relisten at some point

Still love them!

Lush. Layered. Gorgeous.

This is one of those albums that is difficult to rate and feel like I nailed it. I don't think there's a bad song in the bunch, and yet, I don't know that I can say I liked listening to it. (Well, I don't love the "water sign/air sign" tune.) There's something almost intentionally challenging about the band, and I suppose it really comes down to Brett Anderson's vocals. I owned this, and listened to it a few times, but then put it aside. It was never what I was in the mood to hear, and today's listen brought that all back. It's good music for someone else to enjoy. So, it gets the 4 because I genuinely think there are a ton of quality elements and originality to the band and the recording, but I don't know that I'll ever decide to play the record for my own personal pleasure.

Already put a couple of listens into this one yesterday and enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting to. Opener So Young is a low-key jam that feels like a sort of crossover between Bowie and Lou Reed featuring solid songwriting and piano work through the bridge. Absolutely love Pantomime Horse. Something about the song just clicks for me. Love the slogging progression + distortion, and soulful vocal delivery. Just feels like everything is out on display and has fantastic jam potential. Sleeping Pills is another standout for me. Just really love the dreaminess of the production and vocal delivery. This album has a ton of replayability for me. Quality songwriting paired with fantastic production and vocals that just hit right. Four listens in now and I haven't tired yet. This is a high 4 for me, pushing 5 territory. Like a 9.1

fell asleep listening to it and woke up dazed and confsued which idk how that makes me feel about the album but the listening experienc was a 10/10

Singles are very strong. Some dirge but enough good stuff to warrant a revisit which makes it hit the 4* threshold

i liked this album, the type is rock is similar to oasis and the singing of the waterboys, unique songs liked she’s not dead the most

Beautiful... So Young is sooooo Gorgeous.

## In-Depth Review of *Suede* by Suede Suede's self-titled debut album, released in March 1993, is often heralded as a cornerstone of the Britpop movement and has left an indelible mark on the landscape of alternative rock. With its blend of glam rock influences, introspective lyrics, and a distinctive sound characterized by Bernard Butler's guitar work and Brett Anderson's evocative vocals, *Suede* stands as a testament to the band's artistic vision and cultural significance. This review delves into the album's lyrics, music, production, themes, and its influence on subsequent generations. ### Lyrics The lyrics of *Suede* are a rich tapestry woven from personal experiences, societal observations, and emotional turmoil. Brett Anderson's writing often reflects a sense of longing, alienation, and the complexities of youth. - **Themes of Youth and Despair**: The opening track "So Young" encapsulates a sense of youthful invincibility intertwined with an undercurrent of despair. The phrase "chasing the dragon" serves as a metaphor for futile pursuits, hinting at deeper issues such as addiction and existential angst[1][2]. - **Interpersonal Relationships**: Songs like "She's Not Dead" explore dark themes surrounding love and loss, drawing from Anderson’s personal history. The narrative of a tragic interracial romance culminates in suicide, showcasing the weighty emotional landscapes that Suede navigates[1]. - **Class and Identity**: Tracks such as "Pantomime Horse" delve into themes of class struggle and identity crises. Anderson's lyrics often pose probing questions about privilege and societal expectations, reflecting his own experiences growing up in a working-class environment[2]. - **Nostalgia and Reflection**: The closing track "Where Pigs Don’t Fly" offers a nostalgic look back at Anderson's teenage years, capturing moments of innocence amidst the chaos of adolescence[3]. ### Music Musically, *Suede* is marked by its lush arrangements and dynamic instrumentation. The interplay between Butler’s guitar work and Anderson’s vocals creates an atmospheric sound that is both haunting and exhilarating. - **Guitar Work**: Bernard Butler's guitar is central to the album's identity. His ability to oscillate between melodic lines and aggressive riffs adds depth to tracks like "The Drowners," which balances euphoric melodies with melancholic undertones[2][3]. - **Vocal Delivery**: Brett Anderson’s vocal style is characterized by its emotive range—from soaring falsettos to poignant whispers. This versatility is particularly evident in "Sleeping Pills," where he captures the essence of ennui experienced by disenchanted housewives[2][4]. - **Production Quality**: Produced by Ed Buller, the album employs a Wall of Sound technique that enhances its grandiosity but has drawn some criticism for occasionally overshadowing lyrical clarity. While this production style works well for energetic tracks like "Animal Nitrate," it has been noted that ballads could have benefited from more clarity[1][4]. ### Themes The overarching themes in *Suede* can be distilled into several key areas: - **Alienation**: Many songs reflect feelings of isolation and disconnection from society. This theme resonates deeply with listeners who identify with the struggles of finding one's place in a rapidly changing world. - **Sexuality and Identity**: The exploration of sexuality is prominent throughout the album. Songs like "Animal Nitrate" tackle issues of sexual desire and identity with both rawness and poetic finesse[3][5]. - **Urban Life**: The backdrop of London serves as both a setting and a character in itself. The lyrics often evoke images of urban decay juxtaposed with moments of beauty, reflecting the complexity of city life during the early '90s. ### Influence Suede's debut album not only helped define Britpop but also influenced countless artists who followed. Its blend of glam rock aesthetics with alternative sensibilities paved the way for bands such as Blur, Oasis, and Pulp. - **Cultural Impact**: Critics have credited *Suede* with revitalizing British rock music during a time when it was perceived as stagnant. It introduced a new wave of lyrical introspection combined with catchy melodies that resonated with disenchanted youth across Britain[3][4]. - **Legacy**: Over time, *Suede* has been recognized as one of the defining albums of its era. It has appeared on numerous "best-of" lists and continues to be celebrated for its artistic merit and cultural relevance[2][3]. ### Pros and Cons #### Pros - **Lyrical Depth**: The album features complex lyrics that explore profound themes such as youth, love, loss, class struggle, and identity. - **Musical Cohesion**: The seamless blend of various musical influences creates a unique sound that remains compelling even decades after its release. - **Emotional Resonance**: The emotive performances by Anderson and Butler contribute to an album that feels both personal and universal. #### Cons - **Production Choices**: Some listeners feel that the production style detracts from the emotional weight of certain tracks, particularly ballads. - **Accessibility**: The dense imagery and complex themes may alienate casual listeners who prefer more straightforward lyrical content. - **Comparative Limitations**: While *Suede* is celebrated for its strengths, some critics argue that it lacks the same level of artistic ambition found in their subsequent album *Dog Man Star*, which is often viewed as their magnum opus[4]. ### Conclusion In conclusion, Suede's debut album remains a landmark achievement in British music history. Its exploration of complex themes through evocative lyrics and innovative soundscapes has cemented its status as a classic. While it may not be without its flaws—especially regarding production choices—the emotional depth and cultural significance it offers make it an enduring work that continues to resonate with new generations of listeners. As we reflect on its legacy, *Suede* stands not only as an emblematic representation of the Britpop era but also as a powerful statement on the human experience itself.

4 - really liked how this opened, it could use a re-listen because not listening straight through lost me

As usual plenty of complaints about British artists. I hate to break it to our American friends but this band are regularly played on the radio here, and we have never heard a lot of the stuff you describe as 'iconic' and 'everywhere'. Basically there are too many from both sides of the pond!

Second Suede album, still digging it!

Whilst not as good as Dog Man Star and Coming Up, it's still a great album.

Pretty good

Love this but not a classic

This was a nice surprise. I heard bits and pieces of other bands I really like in their music. I’m feeling generous today.

Great album but I think the follow up is better.

Well, there are worse bands to give two albums. I'll say that. This list really does love Britpop, doesn't it? But you know what? I'll give Suede a pass. I actually really liked Dog Man Star. I gave it a high 4 and I'll stand by that. So, my expectations for Suede's self-titled debut album were high, but not too high. I definitely wasn't expecting a better album than Dog Man Star. So, were my expectations met? Yeah. They were met exactly as I expected them too. However, while it's not as good, I would still say that I liked this album quite a bit. A lot of what I said in that review applies here, albeit with a bit of that first-album roughness. I get the comparisons to Bowie, but they do feel kind of overblown. I'm not as huge on the singing this time around, but it still isn't bad. The sound is great though. I do like the darker feel that this has in comparison to other Britpop bands of the time. Songs like "Animal Nitrate" stick out as being really good. The writing is also really good. I don't know if this needs to be on here, and I can see why others aren't as into it, but at this point, I guess I have to admit that I actually think Suede is (or at least was) a really good band. This isn't their strongest work, but it's still strong enough for me to give it a low 4/5.

4 So, this is the second time we’ve had these guys on the list, which came as a bit of a surprise to me being that I had never heard of them prior to their first inclusion. And then, thinking back to that album, I remembered how boring, melodramatic, and pretentious of a listen it was, so I prepared myself for a bit of a slog with this - and boy was I wrong about this one. Where the hell was this energy on Dog Man Star? Granted, there’s a lot of dramatic BS on this one as well, but it does so with such a perfect balance of heavy rock energy and dreamy, hazy ambience that I never once minded it. Hell, even lyrically this worked for me - while not particularly deep, the delivery of lines such as “You're a water sign, I'm an air sign” on Sleeping Pills and “Have you ever tried it that way?” on Pantomime Horse fit so well within the songs that I found myself singing along on subsequent listens. In reading about these guys, everyone seems to claim the group wears their influences on their sleeves, with elements of The Smiths, David Bowie, and a dash of T Rex supposedly to be found in just about every song here - and I don’t quite hear it myself. I mean, the group’s name is directly taken from a Morrissey song (Suedehead), but these guys seem to have more of a heavier, distortion kind of thing going on than The Smiths ever did. I can admittedly hear a touch of glam rock in this which would be more in line with early Bowie and T Rex, but it still mostly feels like its own thing, maybe borrowing from other alternative rock bands of the era if anything. Though, I guess the frontman is known for his flamboyant, sexually ambiguous persona (hence the album cover), so I guess he was borrowing from Moz and Ziggy in that aspect. Anyway, very good album - I genuinely liked every song here. After the first listen or two, it occurred to me that I was having a hard time remembering specific songs and that most of them blended together, but ultimately, I think this is a situation where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. There’s this incredible energy permeated with each and every track that makes this a delight to listen to even if there isn’t an easily pointable standout (though I do think subsequent listens help with that aspect, to the point that I’m now slowly developing favorites). I’ve said before that Oasis was really the only band to pull off Britpop, but it seems that for one album, so did Suede - before it seemingly got to their heads.

Underrated Britpop-era album. Though it doesn't have many individual highlights (special mention to "Animal Nitrate", IMO one of the best songs from the 90s), the overall "vibe" of the album is great and hasn't aged badly.

I liked this album and I don't believe I have listened to Suede before. It felt a bit like The Smiths crossed with David Bowie maybe? Most of the songs were entertaining with only a couple I didn't like as much. Rating: 4

Really good some good songs

01) So Young - 7,5 02) Animal Nitrate - 10,0 03) She's Not Dead - 7,5 04) Moving - 8,0 05) Pantomime Horse - 7,5 06) The Drowners - 8,5 07) Sleeping Pills -8,0 08) Breakdown - 7,5 09) Metal Mickey - 8,5 10) Animal Lover - 8,0 11) The Next Life - 8,5 TOTAL: 8,14 (81/100) Current ranking: 99/318 I've never been a big fan of Suede, but this album is really good, it takes me back to the Britpop days. "Animal Nitrate" is a great song. However, looking at my records, their second album "Dog Man Star" currently ranks higher at #61 with a rating of 8.54 (85/100).

It sounds like gay serial killer music, but in a good way? Is that weird?

This is my pop blind spot. Softer than the rest of the genre, but more technically interesting

Really enjoyed this one!

Quite enjoyed this one! Hovering between a 3 and 4 but have been bumping up to 4 when that happens so I guess I'll continue on that trend.

I was way out with my suppositions. I lumped this in with the dreich of Britpop. I was way out. Next to the grey yawn of Oasis, this is a veritable kaleidoscope. Put simply, this is cooler, sexier and more dangerous than anything that other mob put out. 'Animal Nitrate' whips. There's something pleasantly seedy about Suede, at least on the strength of this release. Admittedly, like much of Britpop, it looks backwards, but at least Suede hoovered up the good stuff.

3.5☆/5 09.03.2024

I feel like this kind of style is always a hit or a miss. In this case is a hit

Good sound Way to similar to the smiths They killed when they released the album. I think they needed theor own sound but didnt get it till a few albums in

Not a massive Suede fan but this was a fantastic license on a Saturday while I made breakfast.

Pretty good album, nice vocal, okay music. Bit surprising position on the list, but I really enjoyed it. Will gladly look into this album again in the future.

Good album. Different to all the other 90's music.

Good stuff.

I think this album is definitely worthy of more listens. For now I would rate it 4 stars or B-.

Proto-Britpop. The real great songs by Suede were to come on later albums, but this is more than a decent start, both of a band and of a genre. 3.5/5

This one caught me off guard. I had no clue what to expect going in. Never heard of the band, and the album cover felt like a random pick from a thrift store bin. But the opening track, “So Young,” hit hard right out of the gate. The guitar riff during the chorus is slick and oddly familiar. It grabbed my attention immediately. “Moving” was another solid track, and the whole album has a confident mix of glam rock flair and early Britpop edge. Brett Anderson’s voice is theatrical in a good way, and the band knows how to build up a song without dragging it out. It’s not one I would’ve stumbled across on my own, but I’m glad I heard it. Solid stuff all around.

Imagine starting the Britpop Genre because Damon Albarn stole your girlfriend. It sounds exactly like this. Jokes aside, the breakup incorporated the unique melancholic wistfulness amongst joy that rules Britpop. You can hear the Clash, the Bowie, the Smiths... all of these excellent British influences that led to yet another wonderful British sound

Ja best nice

Animal Nitrate is a humongous banger. Expected to hate this, actually did not.

Could even be 4.5. surprised how much I liked this!

one of the best in nineties

Jammas

I’ve heard one song from this band on a CD of British acoustic recordings that was in a magazine my mom gave me in middle school lol. It’s cool to hear a familiar voice in its original, very different context. I did not realize they were a part of the 90s Britpop scene, I should’ve checked them out. I’m only vaguely familiar with the scene, I’ve listened to a little Blur, Pulp, and “Wonderwall,” mostly thanks to the Trainspotting soundtrack. I like the band's sound here a lot and the singer's voice too - very unique. Though I think the songwriting could've been tightened up a bit. Favorite track: So Young

okay sini stimm isch sehr speziell aber iwie funktionierts? anmial nitrate sehr cools intro und d gitarre bim refrain gfalltmer au mega catchy aber schlussendlich gaht das safe iwenn uf de sack she's not dead cutes intro riese banger omg mega weird aber liebs moving het echli meh pace aber ja DANKE LUCA SMITHS HEISSEDS ja sie töned sehr ähnlich aber ja smiths hetmer ja au gfalle sleeping pills het au chli öppis komischs verschlafts

I’ve been listening to a lot of Britpop so this came at the perfect time to hear the first album of the era. I liked it but it reminded me a lot more of 70s glam more than the other Britpop bands. Not bad just wasn’t the sound I was expecting. I wanted to listen to it again right after. Rating: 4.5

Most of my very favourite Suede songs aren’t on here, but there’s a high percentage of good tunes that I’m familiar with (i.e. the 7 that made it onto their 2010 Best Of compilation). The other 4 are just kind of alright. I’m not sure if it therefore qualifies as their best album (better than, say, Dog Man Star, which I gave a slightly harsh 3 stars), but I think they’re a 4 star band overall so I’ll score this one more generously. As their debut effort it had less precedent, after all. Certainly I can see why a British band emerging from the early 90s gloop with their theatrical sound and swagger would get the music press so excited. 3.5, rounded up.

Not as good as some other 4s but still very nice

This grabbed me right off the bat with the great guitar layering on So Young. Really enjoy the album as a whole, but did feel like there were some ebbs and flows. Definitely will come back to this one.

I have never heard of these guys, at least, I have no recollection of them. Wikipedia says they were part of the “Big 4” of 1990’s Britpop. The others are Oasis, Blur and Pulp. I am familiar with ALL of them. Still, I think this album is fantastic. I WAS SHOCKED! I will listen to it in the future. It made the list.

Loved this for real when it came out

Geez, I've been on quite a hot streak lately, and Suede has done little to change that. This album is really good. The guitars feel heavy in all the right places, the album can also have its mellow and somber moments, and the vocals fit well with all of the songs. Some of the lyrics aren't exactly perfect but it doesn't do much to hamper my enjoyment of this album. It truly is britpop at its finest. Best Song: The Drowners Worst Song: Pantomime Horse

Not too bad, a fe good cuts

I think bonus stars apply for debut albums. Some really polished work here, set the scene for Britpop. Just a set of well written songs, with top notch guitar work Bernard.

I had never heard of Suede, but I enjoyed this. Animal Nitrate was good. Pantomime Horse was also a favorite track. Very moody. Overall this was a great 90s album. 4

This was really good! Very my style

This grew on me then off and then on again. Overall an album that I appreciated having in the mix. Wish I could give it a 3.5. I rounded up

Where has Suede been all my life! I really enjoyed this album and I'll be listening to it again. I'd say it’s more brit-horny-rock than britpop - I particularly enjoyed the guitar on the album, some excellent riffs. What a great new find! Fave track: She's not dead

Pues discazo.

Suede - or The London Suede, as they are known in the US - began the "Brit Pop" wave of the 90s. They may catchy, melodic pop songs, that capture a variety of moods. Singer Brett Anderson's expressive voice works well with Bernard Butler's effect-laden guitar work. Suede may have been overshadowed by later entries of the Brit pop wave like Oasis, but their songs are great examples of engaging 90s alt rock.

Decent album, not the most exciting thing imo.

genuinely great wasn't expecting it based off the reviews

Kind of a hidden gem. Early brit pop/rock. Animal nitrate is killer

Cracking debut album from Suede which highlighted what a force they were going to be. They were the perfect sound for Britain at the time of release and completely hooked a generation with their pristine lyrics. This album has travelled well over the decades and still sounds as relevant today.

p704. 1993. 4 stars The lost children of Ziggy Stardust. There are some cracking tunes in here - point deducted for a saggy middle section (bit like Brett Anderson) and his voice which gets annoying after a while.

Snapshot of a time in music history, when Brit pop took over the world. This song with those other first records from the “big four” of Brit pop are really pretty great. I can still get down with them at least.

gut, aber späteres album ist noch besser

The is the first album I’ve come across on this list where I can honestly say I don’t know the artist, but I really liked it! I feel like if I listened to this back in 1993 it would have a special place in my old-ass heart today as a classic. Damn only missed it by 30 years.

Loved it a lot more than I expected and I’ve never never heard of these guys before

Early proto-Britpop (predates Oasis debut by a year) but let's make it queer coded and goth-y sexy, basically pop an Amyl Nitrate and let yourself relax in to the couch...

I liked this one

Was dreading another britpop album but the first few tracks were killer. The second half seemed aggressively British and got a little boring but it wasn’t bad. Good enough for a light 4.

Another Britpop album! Singers voice started to get a little old, but I liked the music a lot. Album is probably a 3.5 for me.

I never really gave Suede an honest chance in the past. It was britpop that my stepmother really liked - it didn’t feel “edgy” enough. But there’s just no denying the greatness of this record. It’s extremely charming, well written and is almost exclusively made up of highs.

These are the type of discoveries that I love from this project. 4/5

They have a sound that takes some time to get into but once I got into it, I thought it was much better. 5/5: The Drowners, The Next Life 4/5: So Young, Animal Nitrate, Metal Mickey Rating: 3.75

Honestly liked it a lot. Never heard of Suede before but I can definitely see myself listening again.

Pretty good, should listen again

Kind of a surprise like. Definitely has that British pop sound. The lead vocal can at times sound monotonous.

I kind of dug it ngl "4/5 - I wouldn't mind listening to it again!"

梦回2010

This is fucking great. I’ve never heard of them. The vocals are Bowie-esque, the guitars are clean, the album is dynamic and epic and truly a blast. I’m so glad to have had it recommended to me.

favourite song: animal nitrate really liked this! already a fan of suede and i do think coming up is a better album but still enjoyed it. kinda like the smiths is morrissey fucked.

"shame on the girl, she's got a big black dog in her" I really enjoyed this album upon my first listen, but in hindsight, I think I enjoyed the first 2 songs very much, and kind-of zoned out during the rest of the album. I'm glad to have heard of Suede, although this album had some very strange themes going throughout it, like bestiality, and having sex in cars. So Young has an addictive chorus with the phrase "let's chase the dragon" and will be my playlist track. I also very much enjoyed Animal Nitrate, and the super distorted guitar riff ringing in the haze throughout the track. My percieved rating for this record has jumped all over the place from a 4, to potentially a 5, and down to a 3 upon re-listen, but I'll stick with my gut and award Suede's debut, self-titled, album a 4/5. It reminds me a lot of Bowie, the Smiths, the Cure, and other New Age and Indie rock sounds that I enjoy.

I liked it although I should probably listen again while i’m not doing anything.

I enjoyed this one quite a bit; definitely a style of BritPop that I can actually appreciate.

Blind album and artist. My mind was blown by this album, especially the opener so young. I loved this as a whole still but I don't think I can call it one of top albums I've listened to.

If pop rock's worth splitting up, in two along the walk/talk axis is as good a method as any. For talkative bands, like Suede, whether or not there's any there there is secondary, though initial impressions are favorable. Instead, the confection has to taste a little weird, come in a nice package. Plenty of Suede is recognizable, but the record has an electric-not-heavy sheen which fulfills that first requirement. Excellent cover choice does a lot of work on the second. Then treats just have to avoid causing upset later; Success there, too, though maybe that's a little baked into music.

Fresh, yearning, edgy, intermittently dreamy, authentically earnest, energized and energizing – this is how indie rock (US term) was supposed to sound circa '93, but sure, editors, it can also be viewed as a way-post-new-wave, just-pre-Britpop view of glam (no surprise editors are over-indexing on Bowie influence – any more so than the Beatles? one thinks not!) It rocks a bit more than one remembers, too, with notable dramatic flourishes. One can make a case that they paved the way for Oasis, though they were campier and sought to be artier (the two so often go hand-in-hand, don’t they?). After the crisp, engaging opening, there are lots of quality cuts throughout  "Pantomime House," "Sleeping Pills," "Metal Mickey" and "Animal Lover." "When Pigs Fly” is great, too. Rounding up (but only slightly) because they are more in line with Pulp than the overrated Blur and tiresome Oasis and because one hears faint echoes of Hoodoo Gurus.

Respecting their influence on the early Britpop. If i listen to this album again, probably i would pick some favorites and listen to that picked songs more often. However, i don't want to do that. 3.5

Echt gut, würde ich sicherlich nochmal anhören! 8.2/10

Very good and quite cool tunes that helped break Britpop. Not necessarily world-changing but still sounds good and quite sharp. Maybe just a touch samey, but the effect is energizing throghout and a high level of quality maintained. Rounding up slightly because the angst seems authentic. Plus, the lads seemed likable (more so than Gallaghers at least, low bar though that is) and because this is in one's sweet spot. Also, Suede rates higher than Blur, which allowing for the latter's inflated reputation is saying something.

A lot of 90s rock tropes deployed in surprisingly novel and enjoyable ways. Songs have some motor.

The more upbeat stuff was nice and punky and sort of surf rock sounding, with jangling guitars. Not bad. The slower stuff wasn't as interesting to me. I was a bit surprised as I was definitely aware of this band, but it didn't make much of an impression on me before. Must listen further.

First time I've listened to this album, surprisingly since I live Dog, Man, Star. The better end of brit pop with glam rock influences from Bolan and Bowie moulding Brett and Butler's sound.

Great album, great vibes, will revisit in future. Really enjoyed. Low 4

Buen disco de rock británico, con un par de canciones muy reconocibles. Voz elegante y distintiva. Guitarras no muy intensas

I like it. 4 stars.

First listen Saved 8/11 Top track: Animal Nitrate

Britpop. Es un poco ni fu ni fa, pero le pongo un 4 por ti, venga... :-P

I would definitely listen again

Give in to the delusion that Brett Anderson sounds like Russell Mael and you’ve got yourself a 4 out of 5 star album.

Similar to the previous album presented to me here, I thought this was a bit overhyped at the time, and still do 30 years on. It's a good album (even if the affectations occasionally irritate), and more consistent than follow up Dog Man Star, but it's not quite 5 stars.

Good stuff!

Early britpop album with strong glam rock influences but actually rocks pretty hard. There’s some slower ballady type songs to mix it up but the highlights are definitely the more uptempo ones. Surprisingly good, especially the lead guitar on songs like So Young and Pantomine Horse.

Yet another album where I knew a bunch of songs, liked them quite a lot, and had never listened to the album as a whole. Kicking off with So Young, what a way to open an album! And then straight into Animal Nitrate, wowzers. This album is upbeat and rocking in a few areas, but there's also a lot of really lovely songs with floaty guitars and really nice melodies. I like his vocal, it's quite ethereal and I think it works well with the songs. I'll be re-visiting this again, but have also added a few additional songs to my liked list, including 'Breakdown'.

Great classic British record from the 90s. I always found suede to have a unique sound that sometimes perfectly hits the spot. Other times it just not the right thing to put on.

Oh yes, I remember now...... Early-ish 90's when we were still recovering from the 80s and didn't know what the 90s would bring. Lush and intelligent, delivered with a swagger.

Good fun. A little whiny. Guild me with nostalgia for indie clubs in the 90s.

An enjoyable listen. Sounded quite Smiths-esque, which I'd not picked up from Suede previously.

I start this off having grown up, very much, with Suede. So Young is a delicious track to listen to fresh for the first time in years. The distortion of the soaring electrics - stolen from and improved massively over their shoegaze inspiration - the competency of the drums and a bassline that complements, but doesn't overwhelm... Oh holy fuck that piano is just perfect isn't it? And it stays there, nestling in with the guitars and Brett Anderson's utterly incomprehensible voice, just at the edge of your hearing. Then the very first moments of Animal Nitrates and, wait, sorry, I'm having difficulty typing this from behind my massive throbbing erection. What does it take to turn me on? Apparently the first couple of tracks of this album. She's not dead is a little bit shoegazey for me. Very twiddly and a little morose. The drums of "Moving" assault your earballs in an absolutely delightful way, giving you a Bishop Brennan style kick up the arse. Pantomime Horse is a chore. The only good thing you can say is that it just about prepares your earballs for another drum lick at the start of The Drowners. Bernard Butler does solid work throughout this album. Brett Anderson's vocals really do stray, sometimes being utterly magnificent, other times completely indecipherable. Mat Osman is consistent, underlining the whole album without ever sounding like a show off - unlike, of course, Butler. The drum work from Simon Gilbert is massively underrated. The album doesn't quite live up to the promise of the first two tracks, straying at times too close to the overwrought and overplayed shoegaze style, but the power of it - the influence of it - gets it high marks.

Pretty good.

It’s good. My favorite song is ‘The Next Life’ - it’s such a good closer.

I had never heard of this band prior to listening to this album. Pretty interesting that it was the fastest selling album of all time for a while in Britain. Overall, it was okay. There were a lot of hints of other bands in it, but I didn't find anything to particularly write home about with this album. Erica: I dug it

I like the Smiths (despite Morrissey) and the Cure, and this is like their modern lovechild. So naturally I was into this.

One of the Britpop staples, this album convinces with its typical easy going and somewhat catchy sound, although it lacks the bit, memorable songs

This was one hell of an album. At times it was super grating but overall I dug it.

Cool stuff.

Ooh was een mooi album

Never heard of this band but what a surprise! Awesome guitar work and solos, great vocals and just so enjoyable. Main guy reminds me of HMLTD. Fav Tracks: So YoungAnimal Nitrate, Moving, Sleeping Pills, The Drowners, Breakdown, Metal Mickey, Animal Lover, The Next Life Worst Track: She’s Not Dead 9/10

8/10 - cool album, feels like the inspiration of alot of my favorite bands. May come back to it.

I definitely hear The Smiths and glam rock - more T Rex than Bowie. It takes more than one listen to truly appreciate Gervais’ favourite BritPop band but once you get the musical texture between your fingers, it feels like, well….you know.

I liked this a lot, maybe best overall of these 90s Britpop offerings so far. While definitely in the sonic sounds soundscape of things like Oasis and Blur, it has a kind of psychedelic retro infusion that I found very pleasing.

Soort mix van the Smiths en the Smashing Pumpkins. Goed album, vooral de eerste helft.

Remember, the first time at heard about Suede I was watching a documentary on Brit Pop and Noel Gallagher said that when the song animal nitrate came out, he was pissed because he thought that he was about two weeks away from writing that song. I think about that all the time what a wild thing to say

Britpop’s premiere band before they went all cuckoo-bananas on their next (even better) album that nobody seemed to like at the time.

Classic

I'm not really sure what my issue was all that time ago when I first listened to this album, but I remember thinking it was generic britpop and moving on with my day, but re-listening I like this a lot more. I can here the Bowie comparisons pretty clearly, there's a decent amount of catchy moments here, and it isn't overly long, which I appreciate. It isn't anything mind-blowing, nor would I call it on par with the glam rock golden age, but this is a solid time with some tracks I would happily listen to again. Gonna give this another spin sometime, perhaps I'll gravitate to it even more.

Listened to Suede once in 2019 Artist #6989 on Last.fm Nice surprise, this was pretty good.

Sorta Clash-esque 80s Brit rock to my ears

Dang this is so glam-y, I never would've guessed it was a 90's Britpop boom band. Gotta be one of my fav sub-genres fr!

Oh snap... I don't know this band or this record and I'm a little ashamed. But, this will be a true first listen... should be fun! Sonically, there's still a bunch of the hallmarks of the 80's hair metal bands: several ballads, strings sections, synth punch-ins, soaring vocal choruses with no real lyric, etc. But there's clearly Television-type post-punk stuff going on with the guitar, which feels like the same thing that grunge is born of. The mix of a bunch of different late 80's/early 90's sounds is great. It's got this wonderful Britpop feel to it. It's a good concoction. All that aside, it's the songwriting that really keeps me going with this. This band is clearly an arrow aimed directly at David Bowie and the Pixies, intentionally or otherwise. The Pixies is clearly a contemporary and that all makes sense, and I don't think you can argue either the Pixies or this band exist without being in Bowie's lineage. What's super interesting to me is that they use the sound of the instruments as the glue to hold the sound of the record together while the songwriting is kind of all over the place. It really works, but only because the songs have enough variation and fluctuation in them to not sound the same as the last one even though it's the exact same guitar, amp, distortion, drum sounds, etc. As much as it it's Bowie-influence, at heart it's almost more like Bowie trying to do Neil Diamond songs with a proto-grunge backing band... ... you son of a bitch, I'm in.

Hadn’t heard this album of band before. Definitely need to check them out now!

The opening 27 seconds of "Metal Mickey" alone is worth 3 stars.

One I did not know at all going in. Was pleasantly surprised.

Not really my style but very good for what it is

This was good. Lots that still sounds really fresh and the band is so tight. There is some samey filler and was erring towards 3 but the last track pushed it to 4 for me. Would relisten.

Dark and beautiful indie and grungy. The soundtrack to a lot of my childhood. Love hearing this from an adult perspective

7/10. I'm not entirely sure what to make of this, but I think I liked it

90s klassík sem heldur sér alveg. Það er einhver sjarmi við þessa rödd sem heillar.

enjoyable! nice vibe, sounded similar throughout but it was solid. 6.5/10

Varsinainen klassikko tämäkin. En oo valtavasti Suedea kuunnellut, mutta pitääpi ottaa enemmän levylautaselle! 4/5

homies got some good licks and riff, and as much as tr wants to sound like someone else (bowie, pet shop boys, some other nasally british dudes) he still has a personality all his own. one of the few “im a british guy making an impartial (lies: read: british list) list” albums that sticks. thanks britman.

Hadn't really heard much Suede but I like the sound, dreamy and driving at the same time

An unusual one, pretty enjoyable. I will revisit it

Really enjoyed this album! definitely adding a few songs to my current playlist

I love the songs on this record but it sounds really rough for it's era. And I can never quite make out what the lyrics are.

Great great songs

Classic 90s indie. I had never listened to any Suede albums although I knew them from singles. A solid effort.

This is britpop. Britpop at its best of course!

In general, a good album that serves as a bridge between the 80s Smiths still indie and 90s brit rock/pop. The guitar work is fantastic and the songs where this comes to the fore are all brilliant, but the ballads are a bit more hit and miss. In particular the last 2 songs are fairly bland.

The Stone Roses meet the Smiths to create something that's more simultaneously interesting and listenable than anything Britpop did in the 15 years following this album

Ah Brett, you were so cool at school. The kids were all over this. Not me though, as I didn't like those cool kids. However I'm prepared to re-assess now and say there was something different and special about this album. I always secretly loved Animal Nitrate despite pretending otherwise.

[express surprise at never having heard album] [contrast expectations from reading reviews with how it actually sounded] [mention bands that this band have been compared to] [list songs that do actually sound like the aforementioned bands] [make surprise comparison to another band] [throw in spurious comment about britpop] [lament not hearing album when it first came out] [promise to revisit album in future]

Beautiful and exciting music!

Hmm likte visst Suede bedre enn eg trudde. Minne om The Horrors lol

I've listened to this album a couple of times in the past but never listened closely. On first listen, my reaction was, "Ok, glam" and I was prepared to move on with a 3. The good news is that the album grew on me more and more with each listen. I haven't listened as deeply as I'd like, but definitely want to listen more, which is a 4 in my book. Favorite tracks - Animal Nitrate, Pantomime Horse, The Drowners. Didn't dislike anything, although the guitars got a little "noisy" in So Young which tends to annoy me. EDIT: I said it was a 4, but scored it a 3! Corrected.

Was really cool

Always loved this album, a bit up itself at points, but with style

Pretty decent britpop, but Anderson's over-the-top vocal breaking gets on my nerves after a while.

Rarely has a debut set a template for a band so solidly from the start: pop bangers (Metal Mickey, Animal Nitrate) and epic ballads (Breakdown, Next Life) pitting Brett's Bowie-esque vocals against the nagging guitar of Bernard - for the first two albums at least. Thirty years later it's still working. Listening to it again the debt to Bowie makes it much more singular than the Britpop landfill that came along shortly after in debt to the Beatles, Kinks, Traffic etc.

Way better than what I expected. Will be relistening soon.

this gave me lots of nostalgia. it’s a very good album. thoroughly enjoyed!! highlights: so young, the drowners, sleeping pills, animal lover, metal mickey

Animal Nitrate, the shit

Really enjoyed it. A proper mixed bag in terms of pace, but overall very well put together!

That Animal Nitrate riff though

Oasis, Blur, and Pulp are well known in Australia, but I don't remember Suede. This is a pity as they play some intriguing intriguing. I particularly enjoyed Where Pigs Don't Fly, with that haunting guitar in the background.

Great album. Pillar of 90's brit pop. I like it in general, starting with the clean and shinny guitars of "So young" and ending with the choral "The next life", including a beautiful keyboard session.

Not something I would have stumbled on myself. Wikipedia says it's kind of the start of britpop. Enjoyable.

Maybe it has some filler, but solid work in general terms. Love Bret’s voice and how it borrows some elements from The Smiths.

I enjoyed this!

White boy, black boy, they the same

Nice atmosphere; love the singer’s voice; this album has a vibe I am digging!

7/10. Talvez eu desse mais, mas tô enjoado de rock britânico dos anos 90.

eu e o pj na capa

Reeeeally strong. Could see this becoming a 5 with more listens

Have not heard of Suede before, but I really like it. Has a bit of a Crowded House meets Stone Roses feel to it. Brooding at times and energetic at others... Nice to hear something like this.

Definitely a strong dose of Smiths and Oasis... energetic, melodic and a very enjoyable listen. A lot of really strong songs, liked Animal Nitrate and Pantomime Horse a lot.

Another really cool album. This will get another listen

not bad

The real battle wasn't between Oasis and Blur. It was between Blur and Suede. There was a time when it looked like Suede would be the ones that took on the mantle of Brit Pop deviant champions, but Blur eventually pulled up their socks and left Suede as museum pieces. This album though made a strong case for Suede- distinctive sounds, smart & subversive lyrics, innovative sound.

A nice surprise for me.

Pretty good! Worth revisiting! Added a song to IDDIGC, so high honor imo

Nice early brit pop, enjoyable and very funky at times

Britpop. Es un poco ni fu ni fa, pero le pongo un 4 por ti, venga... :-P

I fucking loved that song

Har helt missat. Otroligt bra, lite mer hårdrock:ig verision av the smiths?

In the evenings after I've eaten a plate of meat the size of a chubby baby, I like to put my suede y-fronts on, open my front door and lunge at any passers by. I am yet to be arrested.

Britpop awesomeness

really enjoyed this, from britpoppy songs to dancier and slower songs, summed up 90's well

Interesting stuff - need to listen a few times.

awesome

This is the definition of a hidden gem! It sounds so fresh and modern, but also nostalgic in some way. If anyone says to me that this album was recorded yesterday and proposes a "flashback" style, I'll totally believe. For me, the last songs are not so good, but the album itself is a very nice discovery!

I don't have much to say but it was a really good album. I throughly enjoyed it from front to back. I had never heard of Suede before and I have no clue why.

This album is very well paced out and planned. The structure of the tracks is awesome, just when you want a little variety in the sound the next song takes you somewhere new!

I never really got into Suede back in the day, so am surprised by such delicate sounds and production from a band I'd just lumped in with other early 90s Britpop. Nice! Fav new track: Pantomime Horse or The Next Life

Catchy glampop with some nice moments. 7/10 album cover arouses me

Good listen, will definitely return to this one. Favorite tracks are Animal Nitrate and Pantomime Horse

I'm more of an Inspiral Carpets guy, but this one fascinated me when it was new and glossy. The cover was quite something.

I very much enjoyed this one. 90s rock was on a whole other level

Very solid! Just some really good hard rock! I liked it a lot. I might end up coming back to it in the future. Very glad I listened to it!

The first three singles are amazing; Drowners, metal mickey and animal nitrate. Slight off put by what I think was said at the time, Brett's "holidaying in other people's misery" lyrics

ну классненький альбом, я ваще не слышал даже об этой группе, но мне можно - я не шарю. Не скучно слушается - это главное

Nice indie rock from the 90's

A very solid glamy-Brit pop esque album. I liked almost everything on this album, though Animal Lover kinda overstayed its welcome in my book. The band wears their influences pretty openly, but they rock it with ease. I very much enjoyed the album, and the songs both individually and overall. Very close to a 5 on this one

KISSING PEOPLE TEEHEE

This is very cool. Great guitar shit. Like Bowie fronting an alt-rock band…but different than Tin Machine lol.

Lots of low reviews for Suede but my emo/new wave heart likes them a lot. Nice to listen and sing along to on long drives at night. I do think the Dog Man Star album is better.

slaps hard, vocals are kind of weird but instrumentals are nice af

good instrumentals and accompaniments. Main vocals were ok, novel to say the least.

Glad I listened to this. Actually good, music has drive, it goes somewhere, it's not a drag to listen to, etc Listened about 3 times. Rlly like animal nitrate, pantomime horse, my insatiable one

Twas gay but it was good. I like.

This album is gayyyyyy but it’s also really good

Really good album, not listened to them before but really enjoyed it and will listen to more of their stuff. Animal Nitrate is stuck in my head

I’ve always meant to listen to suede and I’m glad I finally did. I really enjoy this album

Very good album

Interesting album with an excellent guitar part.

Los conocía de nombre, nunca los había escuchado. Me suena como el lado oscuro del rock británico noventero, más dark y sad que oasis o blur, por ejemplo. Me gustó, está ok.

Scavenger hunt

More than anything, I really enjoy the production on this album. Everything sounds so full and rich, it lends itself extremely well to the compositions. Not much of a fan for Brett Anderson's vocals though (too steeped in glam rock stylings, it borders on parody), but the rest of the band does a lot of great work here.

Solid album

Enjoyed it. A few songs were familiar but never got in to Suede at the time. Will listen again

Credit where credit’s due. See used talent by this group I’ve never heard of, very much enjoyed it

Bon album rock, je ne m’attendais pas a cel en voyant la couverture mais j’ai bien aime4*

Nice nice nice

This was pretty good despite his annoying Bowie voice imitations which was too much at points. The Drowners was an excellent tune. Sleeping Pills is comically dramatic. YOU'RE A WATERR SIGHN, AND I'M AN AYRE SIGHN/Too Siamese to catch the leaves from those trees/Sweet FA to do today. Lay off the valium matey. The horns in Breakdown were sick.

loved it, meloncholic alternative

Didn't know a single song on this album. I like many of the tunes though. Would listen again!

3/15 (Resumed) Love the rawness on this early Britpop record, they’ve got a great sound. Standout Tracks: So Young, Animal Nitrate, Pantomime Horse, Sleeping Pills, Metal Mickey, My Insatiable One

If this was an average representative of britpop, the world today would be a much better place

Maybe I had to be a Brit in my late teen/early 20's in the early '90's to really "get" this... it just didn't resonate with me. You can tell, though, that bands like Blur, Oasis, and even Coldplay gained influence from groups like this.. and that groups like this pulled influence from The Smiths, The Cure, Joy Division/New Order, and so on. It's like the middle section of Brit Pop evolution... but yeah, it's not for me.

Punk like

Slow 90’s alt

Not bad by any means, but having listened to it a day ago, it’s underwhelming and forgettable. Can’t remember what it sounded like!

I have complained that there are too many Britpop or Britpopesque albums on the list, and this selection certainly reinforces that. I'm a hypocrite in that I'm a fan of the genre, and while Suede always seemed a little bit astroturfed by the British music press, that doesn't stop them from having some very good tunes. Plus Brett Anderson's perishing voice compliments the music well. Highlight: "Animal Nitrate."

Oh en die hoes, come on guys... Niet lyrisch, maar ga het later nog wel eens proberen. 6,5/10 Highlights So Young Animal Nitrate

Yeah, that's pretty much what I expected

The songs are good one at a time with breaks in between. After two songs in a row, his voice gets on my nerves.

It's OK, but it didn't meet the hype.

Not bad but not very memorable either. We’ve gotten so many British indie rock albums of various flavours that they’ve all just blended together. Had I gotten this earlier in the list I probably would have rated it higher

Tältä levyltä oli jokunen biisi tuttuja. Tykkäsin eniten kitaravetoisista, vauhdikkaammista biiseistä. Brett Andersonin ääni on omanlaisensa ja tykkään.

After listening to this I went back to Dog Man Star. I like this album much better. I think the simpler compositions seen here work to the band’s benefit. The vocal performances here are better to me as well. This was definitely more directly influenced by glam rock. Favorites were Animal Nitrate, Pantomime Horse, and Metal Mickey.

The Drowners is awesome, everything else was fine. Any inclination I may have had to give a higher rating was overcome by the inclusion of a song called "Animal Nitrate".

Ok. ★★★

Ok, sorta generic.

Whatever it started, Im glad it got better.

Always enjoyed hearing Suede in the Britpop time as my brother would put them on. The album is a high 3 low 4 for me.

Suede are usually the fourth band mentioned when people list Britpop acts off the top of their head: “Blur, Oasis, Pulp and Suede”. I’m convinced that these groups sound nothing like each other and that the whole movement was a marketing ruse rather than a genre. Oasis were inspired by The Stone Roses; Blur by The Kinks; Suede, who I’m consciously listening to for the first time today, sound inspired by Morrissey; and I’ve never properly listened to Pulp (sorry). I was less than four months old when this record came out so unaware of the brief but significant impact it had in the UK. Their atmospheric, dejected sound is cool but listening with unfamiliar ears I am surprised that it was ever mainstream. It sounds niche, and unlike several actually niche British indie bands of the early 1990s (The House of Love and The Wedding Present come to mind) I can't hear any big singles. Lyrically Brett Anderson is pitching himself as an outsider with a chaotic lifestyle, which definitely has an appeal, but not the kind of mass appeal of the other “Britpop Big Four”. This is no way a point of criticism, just a point of confusion. Ultimately for me Suede are an interesting, vibey group, but one with an elusive appeal.

3. Maybe a 2.5.

Starts off well then each songs just starts blending into one, I can see why someone might like it but not great for me 3.5*

Better than your average Britpop with some fun new wave vibes.

This was some pleasant background music. Nothing earth shattering, but nice to listen to while I continue to churn through the administrative heartbreak that is listing everything I lost in my house to the wildfire.

at first I didnt like it, but then it gets better

Love the sound, but sadly I'm not a big fan of the vocals. "Sleeping Pills" is my favorite song on the album

I didn't really listen to much Suede when they were big. Listening to this album, I don't think I missed out on much. The singles are decent but the rest is pretty average. Suede released a comeback album last year and bizarrely, as these comebacks are usually pretty crap, I prefer it.

One of the rare albums I actually appreciated more and more as it progressed

Very nice album, but not the best of Suede for me.

Suede got a bit unfairly overlooked amongst the great music coming out of the UK in the mid 90s; probably because they were more serious and less commercial than the Britpop crew. They had 2 or 3 really good albums, and their obvious influence helped get me into Bowie. That said, when you put this album next to the best of the best I'm not sure it still stands up. I don't know why I'd play this over a Bowie album.

3 1/2 Stars: Really kinda loved this EXCEPT that vocal swoop on the high end of the lead singer's voice. It's so fucking grating, and an obvious indicator he was never taught how to properly sing. But yeah, I've seen this album cover in record stores for years. It's one of my favorite covers, but I never had listened to the actual band until now.

This wasn't my personal cup of tea, but I can respect it.

started off interesting but near the end it started to slow down and it wasn't my forte

The album always kept me on my toes. A lot of the tracks (e.g. So Young, Animal Nitrate, Moving, and Metal Mickey) changed mid track or had an entirely different vibe to the whole song compared to the others. This constant potential of change is what I really appreciated with this album. Most of the songs I didn't fully enjoy and the slow *strumming* kind of (alternative rock I think) music isn't something that matches my taste. Overall very pleased. Vocals were good. Performance/Technical skill was blatant to see. T3: Animal Nitrate, Moving, So Young

I liked the overall sound of this band/album, but did not care for the singer’s voice.

Fine. Similarly to Hotel California, Animal Nitrate aside, it was decent enough background music but, ultimately, just a bit uninspiring.

2.5 rounded up. Didn't think much of that.
