Reviews (page 3 of 13)
Good r and b
Instrumental master class and advertiser's and film director's dream.
If I had to choose one word for "Green Onions", it would be GROOVY. This is a great album to have in the background as you're doing something else. It's a nice backbeat for your day. I found myself nodding along to songs as I was working away my laptop. It was a pleasant work companion. I'll be putting that in my playlist.
Great backdrop for many daily tasks
Are you kidding me? instant classic
fun instramentals of classic songs. Chill and upbeat
60s
Good stuff
I didn't expect to like this album that much but here we are. I loved how it mixed rock, R&B and jazz in such an organic way. The cover of Twist and Shout by The Beatles was awesome.
Imagine creating one of the best albums of all time where a) all the songs are instrumentals and b) you only wrote three of them. An absolutely killer sound that I think everyone is familiar with and probably have no idea who played it.
Great Instrumentals with an organ and a band that is groove 60's beat.
Classics
First listen. Unreal.
So much groove it should be against the law!
Variations on a theme, but it's a great theme (and one you've heard everywhere).
Classic keys vibe
Each song was entertaining. Pretty creative. Reminded me of smooth sailing playlist but more upbeat. Didn't have lyrics though which felt like the finishing touch it lacked
Always hear GO, but never knew where it came from. Thumbs up on this for a mellow, travel album.
Loved it.
An album of cool, smooth tunes. Instrumental only, but that just makes it seem more effortlessly chill.
ok
Had no idea that I already knew the song 'Green Onions'. The most striking thing about this album is that is recorded in the 60s, it sounds much more contemporary than that. Pure groove, so funky
God damn I love the blues. The electric organ is used so perfectly on this album, it's just so much fun to listen to. After looking at the list of personnel that Booker T. Jones has collaborated with in the past, I would say a lot of people agree that he's the best at what he does. This album consists of one smash-hit original single, and mostly covers outside of that, but that doesn't stop the band from stamping their signature all over others' works. The instrumentation is fantastic and each member does a great job of taking their turn to chime in and take the spotlight. It's very clear that the guitar and keyboard are completely locked in and have spent loads of time playing together. Tight as fuck. Fave tracks: Green Onions, I Got a Woman, Behave Yourself
Just a perfect instrumental soul album. Clearly it's influence has spread far and wide, the sound that comes from this is just ubiquitous. Short but sweet, my only complaint is that there isn't more. Fav Tracks: Green Onions, Behave Yourself, Lonely Avenue
idk yet
Aí sim! Excelente!
Love it. This can be party background music, work music, sit and listen and pay attention to every click of the organ keys music,… Positioned clearly at a point in the early 60’s because of the instrumentation and groove, but doesn’t sound old fashioned.
This is fire!!! Really cool instrumental soul/rock. You’ll definitely recognize a few tracks on here.
Is it just me or is one of the tunes in Nacho Libre?!?! THE Nacho Libre, pure Cinematic Gold.
great album, 10/10, instantly recognizable from the first five seconds favorite song was probably Rinky Dink it sounded like a Napoleon-Dynamite-Christmas
Casual Thursdays will never be the same!!!
Oooh, I never knew the name of this first track. Green Onions is great! This whole album was great.
This is a prime example of setting influence for the next 50+ years
Enjoyed every song! Saved in my favorites
Slow motion movie blues. I remember from some film, but I don't know wich one. Kind of smooth and chilling music for meetings
So good. Didn’t stop moving once.
I didn't recognize the album name or artist, but most of the tracks were familiar.
Really enjoyable and ahead of it's time.
Perfect party playlist in one album. Style as music. Essential record.
Super funky
My type of album, really good all around
Buen ritmo, buenas canciones
excelente
Great instrumentals.
This is just wonderful music. I knew the song Green Onions but I was surprised by the quality of the rest of the songs. I like cooking to this.
I’ll play catch up on this one.
Greeeeeeeeeeennnnnn ONNNNNIOOOONNNNNSSSSS! this song is everywhere. this is sold rhythm and blues. Comin' Home Baby is fucking solid
Absolutamente genial
Nothing but GROOVES on this one. Classic record.
That was extremely enjoyable. This is the first album that I would actually consider downloading for repeat listening. I had heard "Green Onions" on the radio, but I also liked the other songs. "Behave Yourself" stuck out to me.
Instant classic album. Timeless songs.
Way ahead of its time, fantastic album.
One of the best albums ever!
I didn’t know the song name but everyone has probably hear green onions sweet melody at some point. The rest is pleasant jams as well.
great, all instrumental
Album made me think of a time where you would pour a glass of your choice , put on a record and just have it play while you relaxed. The musicianship was great, not really something I normally would have chosen but it was very good.
Great instrumental album, title track is absolutely legendary. I am enjoying the rest of the album as well, but like someone else has already said, I wish it would have more original compositions from the guys. So all in all, probably solid 4 stars.
"Green Onions" (the song) is an all-time classic. Even though it's from 1962, I remember hearing it in the late 60s or early 70s, and it was still more cool than 99% of the other stuff on the radio. Probably still is now. The album, as a whole, is excellent (if at times a little dated-sounding), and the playing topnotch, and I give it 4 stars. (5 doesn't quite feel right, though it's close.) Found out some interesting stuff from Wikipedia: Booker T. Jones was only 17, when they made this album. The band were basically the house band for Stax Records, in Memphis, providing support for people like Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Bill Withers, and the Staple Singers (similar to the Funk Brothers for Motown in Detroit - for artists such as The Temptations, and many others). "Booker T. and the M.G.'s" were Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper on guitar, Donald "Duck" Dunn (replacing Lewis Steinberg in 1964/65) on bass (so Steinberg was actually the bassist on this album), and Al Jackson, Jr. on drums (until his death in 1975). Cropper and Dunn also had roles in "The Blues Brothers" movie (as themselves, basically), and were members of The Blues Brothers band. Booker T. Jones is still around. He also played on Willie Nelson's "Stardust" album, that we had here not too long ago.
light four it's tight, it's loose it's not too complicated I dig it
#431 / 1089 Heard before? ❌ (not as an album) Revisit? ✅ As it launched into the first song, I knew what I was getting after three notes. I did not remember this was an instrumental album however. It's ridiculous how influential this album has been and the sound is still relevant today as many a soul group takes notes from it 60 odd years later. The covers don't feel like cover songs at all, they don't need vocals and feel complete as is. Stax, man, they did deliver straight from the get go! I'm tempted to give this one 5, some tracks not 100% to my taste even tho the delivery on those is of the highest quiality, a 4/5 will suffice.
Feels like I'm listening to a movie soundtrack. 4/5 for the cultural impact.
It really is a lovely and consistent album. This is the second time it’s come up for my multiple projects. The first time I heard it I was blown away that I had never heard it before and had no familiarity. This time I was able to listen more honestly. It’s lovely and consistent, but there is nothing revolutionary or groundbreaking about it. So… 4 Boolean: True
This album feels good
Chill, fun, and good easy listening. Proof that it doesn’t have to be flashy to hit the soul. Great album, with a stellar and iconic opener.
I really wanted to watch The Sandlot after listening to this album, Green Onions is such a jam. No complaints about a short instrumental album at all, and I enjoyed the Ray Charles cover.
I recognize so many rifts off of this album. I had to look up and see what were original and what were covers. It turns out a lot of them are covers, however, the biggest title "Green Onions" is an original. I've heard it so many times before. It hit me like a freight train. Glad to know we're originate from. Overall a super cool instrumental album!
guapardo
Good album, a little bit samey at times but great for the right kind of setting
4/5
Dynamic, fun and very rhythmic Loved the part that there are no lyrics
lovely!!!
Cool history too
12 bar blues at its finest
3,5
Fun album !
Green Onions… ‘nuff said.
What a song to open with!! Rest are great too
sharp
This is a classic masterpiece. While listening I felt completely locked in — it’s so harmonic, melodic, and entertaining from start to finish that it never lets you go. Even though it’s mostly instrumental, the album is full of storytelling and emotion. You can literally imagine everything that’s happening as the songs play: late-night drives, smoky clubs, tension, joy, smooth cruising, and raw energy all mixed together. The grooves are tight, the melodies are unforgettable, and every track has its own character and swing. The chemistry between Booker T. Jones on organ, Steve Cropper on guitar, Lewis Steinberg on bass, and Al Jackson Jr. on drums is pure magic. That perfect balance of soul, blues, and rock ‘n’ roll instrumentals makes the whole record feel alive and full of action. Green Onions is one of those timeless albums that still sounds fresh and exciting today. An absolute essential in any music collection.
- Great talent on display throughout the whole album - Very fun and chill vibe to the whole album - I listened to this one at the beach and it made for some great background music at the beach. Easy listening. - Fun guitar riffs, basslines, keyboard riffs, and drum sounds. Everybody was tight while making this.
(Light 7/10) The title track is fantastic of course, and the rest of the record just kinda follows suit. It's fine music to have on in the background, but doesn't really do much to "wow" me. Certainly a talented group of session musicians, I just wish there was more to it.
Maybe the best interlude album ever made.
Very nice 👍🏼
remember being 7-8 learning Green Onions on piano and feeling like a real musician. Rinky Dink is one of those songs everyone knows but just doesn't know the name of. excellent album
solid jams !!!
Reeks of cool!so laid back and such tight musicianship
Groovy!! Entre 3 et 4
Very pleasant tunes, thx!
Absolutely iconic yet I had no idea that was the name.
Very oceans eight
I’ve finished it
Influential with several great tunes, but lacks variation throughout the album
This one is great!
You will have to like the Hammond organ to like this record. I do like it, to a degree where I have no problems saying that more is more. Therefore I like this album quite a lot, since that's exactly what's served. Listening to this album, except for recognising that song, you'll probably also be able to trace a lot of sounds and harmonies from more contemporary music which is kinda nice. It's a 3,5 for me tipping to 4 because like the cookie monster likes cookies I like the Hammond.
Easy listening. Liked it. 4 stars
Great, good background listening
I’ve probably heard “Green Onions” a thousand times, but never thought much about who performed it or what the name of it was. But pretty impressive to be that ingrained in pop culture. Loved the sound of the organ and guitar together. Enjoyed it.
Poil répétitif mais c’est un classique 4+/5
Loved this little beauty, had only ever heard “Green Onions” from this album - a thing of beauty
Blues Brothers jump scare
The title track is one of those songs I’ve heard hundreds of times but never actually knew where it came from. This is a great soul instrumental album. Fun and so influential.
Goodness, I had no idea it was made out early. Fun funky would let us swing although I can’t imagine playing this intentionally very much. But it’s cool and I can see why it was important for its time.
I was halfway through the album before I realized this was 1962, which was kinda shocking. That guitar and the deep R&B groove just said '66-'68 to me. Overall, even beyond the stone classic title cut, it's packed with tunes that call out to be included in party playlists. So good I could even appreciate the Hammond organ. 4.5/5. Seems like a milestone album to include in a list of 1001.
Despite being covers with a heavy heavy organ overfill, this album is pretty good.
I really enjoyed this album. Their cover of some great songs were very well done.
Unstoppable grooves
Super cool, smooth, snappy album
first song is a banger that I wanna bang. I love this. good 4 Album so good that I had to ride it
Pre Listen: Who? I like green onions in my food, and I like the album cover, and I like the release year, all telling me I'll likely enjoy this album. Notable Tracks: Green Onions - Ohhhh shit it's these guys. I couldn't tell you how many pieces of media I've heard this bit in. Very cool, also my favorite track. Mo' Onions - A reprisal to the song they clearly recognized is a banger? Brave. I applaud it. Twist and Shout - Love me Beatles. Love a good Beatles cover. Simple 'as. Post Listen: Call me Shrek but I'm digging these Onions man. Classic 60's rock, it's smooth, it's inoffensive, it's foundational. Got me tapping my foot and and humming along. The songs have a decent variety in sound too, I'll be adding a few to my playlist perhaps. A unique thing about this album is that there really wasn't a 'Least Favorite' track I encountered, it's all quite good. Giving the album a 4/5. Took my expectations and ran with it to higher places. While the whole album is solid, I wouldn't say there's anything exceptionally special however, which is why it isn't a 5/5.
Yeah this was really really good. Each song did it for me. Wanted to give it a five because it was so impressive instrumentally but it didn’t feel like a five to me personally. In terms of raw musical talent and historical value it’s an easy five but I’m trying to rank based on my own taste in music.
Wonderful jazz
Really enjoyed it. More than I expected. I believe some songs are even used in movie soundtracks.
Why is this kinda fire ??? Didn’t expect it. Its not something i would listen to on its own but its very nice on the background while doing something else , i really enjoyed it
Yes, the title track is one of the most coolest, understated pieces of instrumental awesomeness ever put to tape. The rest of the album doesn't quite hit the highs of that (even despite its sequel "Mo Onions"), but its some nice soulful early rock that's pretty fun.
I’ve heard their songs before but never listened to the album. It’s funny how some songs have a life of their own outside of context and owners.it slapped, the piano organ was great, limited vocals, good drums. Just a great chill blues album.
It sounds good, well balanced, with nice tempo
Green Onions // Rinky Dink // Lonely Avenue // 3.5/5
I liked listening to this for the most part. I’m not huge on instrumentals so it dragged for me, mostly in the middle. I added ‘Stranger on the Shore’ and ‘A Woman, a Lover, a Friend’ to my library; the former stuck out to me the most. ‘Comin’ Home Baby’ was also a top pick for me, as was ‘Rinky-Dink.’
From the first notes of the album I recognized this band. I had no idea what they were named. lol I love the mix of the organ and the guitar! Overall, very interesting album and great to work to. \
I have liked the track Green Onions for as long as I can remember, it just has a cool vibe to it. The rest of the album Green Onions has a lot of the same energy. Cool, instrumental organ and guitar driven music. It's easy to listen to. I'll add this to a list of albums that I listen to when I'm reading or writing and lyrics are distracting.
Have loved the title track for years. Rinky Dink is a new fav.
Classic blues reps, but I’ve never liked that Hammond organ sound
Some rollicking fun. It does fall off after the title track unless your last name is Hammond but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Quite a bit more than that shit talking rap album about the knob who lost his money in his TV.
Every once in a while it’s fun listening to some older stuff. I enjoyed this album!
very groovy, fun background music for calligraphy
Jams
good old days rock
Love that Hammond B-3!
Very fun record, wasn't aware of this album and it was a good surprise. It had everything in instrumental albums, memorable songs, songs to listen to everyday and a plethora of sounds and feelings. Recommended 100%
classic. hammond organ. instrumental.
Look, i'll put scallions on anything.... Green Onions is one of those classic instrumentals you don't realize you know but you absolutely know. Maybe it's just the organ, but everything on here has that similar warm familiarity. Sometimes that's because the song is being covered, sometimes just because this is comfort food. The slower songs feel like a hazy summer boardwalk from a past none of us really lived. The faster or groovier ones, like the idealized childhoods of just before we were born (whenever that was). It's a light album, but i'd give it a light 4* for that
shoutout stax this is soopa fun
No olihan tää kovaa ajoa! Green Onions toki ihan mestariteos, mutta muutenkin oikein mukavaa taustamusiikkia. On tuo urkusoundi kyllä huima!
haha i liked that vibe
iconic
Primer tema ya arranca por un temón. Lo demás va bastante bien.
what a funky little album.
good
Great instrumental album. Def one id like to revisit.
Geile Scheibe.
12 bar cool
Fantastic instrumental album. So many recognizable riffs and tracks. Was able to just sit back and enjoy this one.
It was good. A bit strange in contrast to what I usually listen too or whats popular. Still very enjoyable, especially if you like organs.
mostly instrumental
This is a banger fr
Green onions and more green onions. Sounds like a Saturday night ballgame in July
The Who y The Small Faces, cualquier grupo mod se sabe todos sus temas. The Clash también. Aquí obviamente Los Flechazos, Los Negativos, Brighton 69 y cualquier banda mod. Twist and Shout tampoco. “Todas las tomas fueron grabadas en vivo, con todos los músicos tocando juntos. Casi todos los hits fueron hechos en una sola toma. No había overdubs.”
Yes
A really defined sound, in my opinion. I'm starting to become more of a fan of instrumental albums, and this one has solidified my new love for them. The opening track really sets the mood of the album as a whole, and I was hooked from start to finish. I enjoyed the addition of 'Mo' Onion', which sort of served as a sort of filler or break for the album. It had the underlying sound and feel of the opener, but with a slight variation. Great album. Favourites: Green Onions Mo' Onions Twist and Shout
Earns four stars on just the iconic title track alone. There are other great organ-based rhythm and blues head-boppers on there besides that, but given the instrumental nature and the handful of unnecessary covers (no one needs to hear “Twist and Shout” as a instrumental jam), it stays a 4.
fun listening experience
Woah I think I do like instrumentals quite a bit. This was very pleasant to listen to.
hey i love green onions it is an instrumental album and definitely of the time. culturally significant. im a sucker for instrumental stuff. hard to review something like this in modern context. ill just say four stars.
Amazing album.
This is a FANTASTIC record. There are a lot of great songs on here, but it's not QUITE a "5" for me - so close though. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: n/a Best Songs Green Onions I Got A Woman Behave Yourself Lonely Avenue One Who Really Loves You A Woman, a Lover, a Friend
I didn't know it by title, but I was familiar with the "Green Onions" I have to say, I was enjoying this. Great stuff to chill out to, and relax. 3.75 rounded up to 4.
Enjoyed it
I really liked this one, quite a few well known songs on it. Easy to listen to.
This was really weird. I felt like in knew every single song. It's strange how ubiquitous some of the tracks were, and so how comforting they are.
I got a unique joy out of this album. It's just so so cool!
Just a cool record. It’s amazing that you don’t even need an attuned ear to hear the influence Green Onions had on rock music.
Day796 - i saw a stax records documentary and it’s just amazing how talented these players were.
Vibra interesante
Class album if you love jazzy organs
Ouh Green Onions is so groovy, I love it! Rinky Dink and Mo' Onions were other favourties of mine. This was a super funky album. I really enjoyed it!
I definitely recognize more than I thought I would. The music is nice it’s fun to listen to. This album is so influential. If you don’t think you’ve heard I bet you have at least once. Favorite song: Behave Yourself
If you wanted to show a group of young musicians an elite example of a band as a group of musicians serving each other and the song, you could do worse than this album. Each player plays their role, takes their time and supports the groove and the vibe. The outcome is exceedingly enjoyable and deceptively simple. I teach primary school dance and one of the first songs I play for my classes of Preps (5 and 6 year olds) in their intro to dance lesson is the title track to this album. Has never failed to get bodies moving and minds relaxed, and never will.
Didn't realize how much of this album I already knew.
Instantly recognizable. If you've never heard Green Onions, yes you have. Fun music. The guitar work is delightful (especially notable on Twist and Shout). Loving the percussion on I Got a Woman. So far, the most enjoyable album I've heard from this list that I didn't already own. The fact that it's all instrumental is really working in its favor.
i love the organ it is a wonderful instrument
It's a lot of fun!
One of the only on here I've seen live. Hard to beat this for coolness. I feel like McLemore Avenue should be on the list. Same coolness, but applied to Abbey Road.
This was a very smooth and slightly trippy time, but maybe that's just because I was feeling over-tired. It felt very Ghost World-coded because I feel like those kooky teens would absolutely love this album. It's very that. I think on paper I wouldn't enjoy this album as much as I did, but there is something irresistibly jaunty about it - and literally who can resist a bit of jaunt?
4 stars Every time I hear “Green Onions” I’m convinced it’s a different song with lyrics. But anyway, a great instrumental album with a tight group that rocks. It can be a little samey but it’s short and sweet.
A genuinely all-round good rock & blues album. No lyrics, just a group of artists jamming out with some music. Fantastic listening and no message besides good vibes. 8/10
Looooved this. Will definitely relisten and glad it subsequently brought 'Comin' Home Baby' by Mel Torme back into my life.
> the Beatles
Loved it, very cool album. Nice to have no lyrics for a change.
Before: The artist and album title look familiar but I can't think of any thing specific I know from them. I'm sure I've at least skimmed though this before. During: Starting off with the first track, Green Onions. Oh, of course I know this one. I have it ranked 9 out of 37 for my favorites from 1962. The next, Rinky Dink, is great as well. It can't help but make me chuckle a little. For some reason I decided not to put it on m 1962 list but I'm adding it now. At the last track now, Comin' Home Baby, I also added that one to my 1962 list. I have a policy not to put covers on my best of yearly lists but do make a few exceptions. After: It was a blast listening to this several times throughout the day. Apparently it's almost all covers which takes it down a notch or two for me. It's great but the best I can do is a 4.
The groove is super catchy and the rhythm is spot on for a solid background listen. It just lacks that emotional spark I look for in instrumental tracks to really make it a favorite.
top 3 - Green Onions, Rinky Dink, One Who Really Loves You. Never heard of this before. Makes good background music. Funky!
Suena viejo y moderno a la vez
Fav tracks: rinky dink, twist and shout, stranger on the shore It’s cute to hear the groovy soundtrack to so many classics!
Classic instrumental funk and soul. Like a soundtrack to a classic tv show from the 60s.
I liked it, just a chill album to listen to on a rainy day 4/5
This was a fun one. I get suckered into instrumental albums. This was no exception.
Dope AF
This one really hit the spot. Though a lot of the songs sound the same, they always lay down a great groove with some hot Hammond organ and tasty solos. "Green Onions" is the obvious standout but I enjoyed all of it as up-tempo background music. Just what I needed on a Friday night after a long, busy week.
Ok, o resto do disco é surpreendentemente confortável. 4/5
Straight fire
just sweeping the roadhouse..
Initially comes across as a bit simplistic but when you listen long enough the melodic thruline of Booker T.’s organ gives it a surprising depth of atmosphere.
Overall Rating - 3.88/5 (7.75/10). An all-instrumental, Memphis Blues album with slick musicianship and solid work. Great album, would absolutely listen again.
Bluesy
Fabulous album, but like many early 1960s collections, there's an awful lot of cover versions! Not necessarily a bad thing when they're done well, as they are here. It's only taken me my entire life, but I've only just realised that green onions are the American equivalent of spring onions - my least favourite type of onion. Ah well. Nice in some Asian cooking, I suppose, but NEVER RAW!
That the title track to this album was an international hit in 1962 feels so quaint, yet aspirational. A world where everyone is dancing to Booker T.? Sign me up.
This album rules. Booker T, Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn. Hell yeah.
Can’t beat the sound of Stax Records!
Very funky
Great to hear the Stax house band in their own instrumental album. A unique sound, Steve Cropper taking a big role and the muscle shoals studio all in one. Probably recorded in a day! Fantastic stuff.
i do love green onions
Sample history right here holy shit
Really good album. It is just so smooth. The organ is great and sounds like you are in the room with it, and the rest of the band is wonderfully cohesive. 4/5 Will listen again
awesome laid back groovy
An instrumental album made with a lot of electric organ and guitars. You’ll instantly recognize the title track from a ton of movies it’s been in (The Sandlot, Happy Gilmore, American Graffiti, etc). The instrumental work is great and makes me hope for more instrument-only albums on the list. The one big criticism I have is that over half of the album consists of funky instrumental covers of other songs, rather than original compositions. This was still a fun listen that I’ll give a 4/5
There's no denying that this album (certainly the song Green Onions) had a major influence on rock. The song itself is iconic. But the rest of the album...(now) seems stale. But in its day, we can be certain this was magic rock-n-roll. Judging it by today's standard is biased. In 1962, this had to be blasting. So, just realize, I'm in my 60s. This album is almost as old as I. I'm much more stale than this. 4 deserved old-cranky stars.
Love this in the morning
nice, very pleasant
jolly and cheerful, fun listening but mostly would only listen in the background i think
I don't which is better: Booker T.'s M3, or Steve Cropper's clean guitar playing. I loved listening to both. How could you listen to this in the 60s and not want to learn to play the organ? Booker T. made the it sound so cool. Liked Songs Added: Green Onions I Got A Woman Lonely Avenue
Great way to start my Friday.
Not only do I love green onions (the vegetable) but I also think this album is super fun!
spongebob ass music
Organ was fun
I recognize a lot of these songs being sampled in other songs
Coming out in 1962, this is a foundational album, the first one ever issued on Stax and an influential classic. Not least because the core of the group played as Stax studio house band for many years, bringing their sound to numerous releases on the label, including those from Otis Redding, Sam & Dave Wilson Pickett and Aretha but they are also credited with influencing both Southern and Memphis Soul; the Beatles were fans too and now I'm listening, I can even hear their influence on The Doors. Several names will be familiar to fans of The Blues Brothers, appearing as their band in the film.
iconic stuff
I really liked this album! I was surprised by how many of the songs I recognized either from movies/tv or from other popular songs that sampled music from this album. Very groovy, atmospheric music, and I enjoyed that it was all instrumental too. I also was happy that this wasn’t just another white boy indie/alt rock band (since my last like 5 albums from this generator have been just that lol).
Oh I know this song (Green Onions) Some elements of Ethiopian Jazz??? What came first the chicken or the egg
calming and nice background for completing my work. it was very funky and fun, while also being peaceful. i really liked all of the songs (although if you were to ask me i prolly couldnt name them)
Rv/G
Kind of a jam
Imagine my surprise when I learned that Green Onion wasn’t just part of the Sandlot score.
Love it 4/5
Classic
Best missile dropkick in the business.
sounds nostalgic
Would love to hear a story about this album and all it has inspired.
Great instrumental album that would be great while doing chores
Green Onions is ever green, ho ho. In the 80s I always loved when DJs at youth club discos and later in the decade at the student union were still fitting it in alongside hits by New Romantics and disco, and then indie tracks and early EDM. When I saw the 70s film American Graffiti in 1990/91 I felt like I got an extra insight into why this worked. The film follows teenage life in small town America over the course of a single night in the early 1960s. It is soundtracked throughout by the pop and rock & roll of the era. Characters are mostly in their cars with the radio playing. Aurally you are swimming in the music of the era. At one point there is a drag race and the film cuts to the road and Green Onions hits. I felt like I was hearing it for the first time. Having been immersed in early 60s pop up to that point in the film Green Onions suddenly sounded so alien and futuristic and exciting. Back in 62 it was from the future so of course it still filled dancefloors 20+ years later. The rest of the album doesn't quite hit the same heights but who cares, really?
This was nice. I'm glad to get to know this band beyond "Green Onions." The whole album just grooved. Adding this to my rotation.
The first song is SO iconic, and the rest were lovely. When you love the organ as much as I do, having it be the star in every track is the opposite of a problem.
Mæ: Det her har æ aldri engang hørt _om_. Mæ, to sekunder ut i første låt: Å, men det her kjenne æ jo!
Loved it. We've all heard Green Onions a million times but I'd never put a name to it or given it much thought. I love the sound of a Hammond Organ and the guitar was really nice throughout. My main critique is I think the instrumentation sounded kinda thin on some songs, which is hard to ignore when it's all instrumental. It works well in some songs, not as much in others.
Fresh
OMG... Booker, Steve, Don... instrumental magnificence.
Ah fond memories of 12 year old me trying to look cool gliding across the dance floor to Green Onions in my 1980 mod era.
ohhh ik this
Love the instruments
Mo Onions Mo Problems - BigE
4 out of 5 stars. would give it 5 out of stars if it had some lyrics about a salacious thick legged woman giving the singer shit.
hammond hots different
Slaps
After this weeks albums I needed this! I don’t even care it was purely instrumental!
Love Booker T and the M G’s, great album!
Lots of jams!
Opening: this is where George Lopez gets the inspiration for the opener for that song. Very funky and groovy. First song is a great intro. The riff that is inspired by love is strange, undeniably recognizable. Extremely groovy and funky album. Highly recommend
Oh yeah! That unique stax Memphis sound. Love it! 4 stars.
Just restarted this after a year-long break, and what a way to start. This album is simply just 35 minutes of fun vibes, like walking into an amazing jam session at your favourite bar.
Erstes Lied Klassiker viele Dinge bekannt
I always assumed the track Green Onions was not the first track on their debut album. But wow. Heck of a way to start things off. Rest of the tracks prove just how great of a house band they were that they could have their own album of solid tracks like this.
Rinky dinky doo
pre known and obviously pre loved
Love some mellow instrumentals.
Good
I loved this album
I never knew the name of that famous song was Green Onions? I liked this one. Was good.
This is straight up one of the tightest and most groovy soul albums you'll ever hear by absolute royalty of the genre. Yes, the title track is an absolutely monster cut (so much so it gets recycled two tracks later for Mo' Onions) but every cover (nine of the 12 tracks on the album) has all of the band members completely in the pocket. This album has the legendary "Stax sound" in full swing and shows off exactly why these guys were tapped up for just about every blues and soul artist worth a damn in the Memphis scene at the time. If there's a negative, it's that the middle of the album brings the tempo and the energy down to lounge music levels of chill and the kind of stuff your grandparents listened to. Thankfully the energy picks up again in the back third of the album and we head home with a fantastic version of Comin' Home Baby. If you don't like soul music or the blues, you'll hate this album but if you have more than a passing interest in either, this is worth your time.
Very cool.
Fantástico 🤘🏻🎧💀
Album Title song goes very hard, feel like it’s probably in a lot of movies. Big fan. Cool instrumentals
fun listen
I went in blind with this album and the amount of tunes I immediately recognised is insane. I understand there are a lot of covers, but everything together it is a very chill and relaxed vibe. The group and the album have made a huge cultural impact as well which I respect. I would listen to this again for sure as I like a good and vibey instrumental album.
I was surprised I knew a couple of the songs.
This was super cool. Recognizing how many of these tracks got remixed and utilized over the next several decades shows how impactful it was
Really enjoyed this one. Good grooves and easy to listen to.
Familiar tunes, didn't know the artist. Appreciate the album and some of the raw sounds, of real instruments
Oh hey, I know that groove.
Green Onions is a monster of a tune. Never realized they were an album kind of a group. But where's Soul Limbo?! Missing their second best tune, but dare anyone to not pull off some random twisty dance moves while listening. Don't forget to tip your waiter.
Some smooth as butter tunes on this album. Loved it more than I thought I would, though the titular 'Green Onions' was of course the highlight.
I mean Green Onions is almost the problem here as it's so unbiqutous even covers that are well known are unfamiliar by comparison (like Twist and Shout). But it's fun and eminently listenable. It's also very simple. And for that I like it.
4, a bit of a one hit wonder, much of is like fun elevator music
7.5
Classic that song
Wirklich guter RocknRoll.
6.5/10 não conhecia
I enjoy the obvious similarities between 'Green Onions' and 'Mo' Onions' Very enjoyable and something that went down really well in our kitchen.
Funky. Catchy. Put this on and bop around the house.
I got so excited when I saw this album art. This is one of those records I already knew I'd buy blind, its title track is just too much of a groove, and I believe it's also the only song from the effort I'd heard before. What's really impressive is how Booker's organ can carry life and happiness, even when it's not technically supposed to. That flavor over blues makes the genre a little less sad, like splashing a vibrant yellow. A bit more on the green side, one might say. It sounds dated, but it's so well-executed. This is the type of work I'd expect to cross generational barriers with ease. 4.2/5
Nice background listen
I remember the Stax museum
I love this album. Such a cool band
3.5/5 Decent background music and iconic first track but probs wouldn’t rinse it
Surprising! I had never thought twice about the Green Onions song, but it's neat to just stumble upon it. Nice little instrumental album.
4 stars, love Stax, RIP Steve Cropper. Really good pieces ahead of its time, but this band is at its best backing vocalists, Otis, Wilson, et. al.
This album reminds me of eating peaches in the summer. The good ones from Georgia, not the hard bitter ones. While peaches were not as available as the other fruits from my childhood, when they showed up, they were sweet and often a meal in themselves. They are nostalgic, like many of these songs.
Extra star because it's Green Onions.
