Fantastic. A good range, rough and gentle, love it.
i will say if i'm feeling a little #freaky i might prefer this over doolittle
Punky grungy fun
музыка замечательная обложка тож ничего
Great Album! Love the writing.
Good album, but enjoyed Doolittle more. Still solid art punk/alternative. 4/5
O, ne, poslušat moram enga mojih najljubših bandov in to album, k ga že tko al tko velikrat. O. Ne. (Sicer morm priznat, da mam mal rajši Doolittle, but still.) Naslednji štirje so pa basically moj najljubši del albuma. Kle se res zabavajo.
Without the Pixies, the 90s would've sucked. Well, more than they already did. It's not just the quiet / loud / quiet song structure that every band worth their weight in alternative rock radio pinched from this album, you could also make the case that the Pixies made being weird on rock records cool. They were not the first or the last of this ilk, but pop time signatures played as noisily as possible with reverance to surf music, punk, noise rock, and garage and interspersed with personal conversations and unintelligible lyrics will make anyone who can dig it feel very, very hip. I don't know what most of these songs are about, but I think that's the fun of it. Listen to a Steve Albini tone poem, pick up a guitar, and change the world.
Familiar with Pixies via the song Que Sera Sera. First Listen, while listening to the album I found myself developing a better appreciation for alternative rock and particularly with grunge. Though with both genres, especially with the latter, I'm still very picky about what exactly "clicks" with me. Bone Machine and Gigantic were tracks that instantly clicked with me. I believe the tracks themselves are more alt-rock than grunge which is probably the reason I liked them more initially. Something Against You was a grunge-heavy track that I found to be great and was another from the album that instantly clicked with my tastes. I seem to have a certain threshold when it comes to the distorted nature of the Grunge genre. The highlight of the album, Where Is My Mind is my absolute favourite. Again, more alt or indie rock than other tracks. I think it's Joey Santiago doing the guitar riff but it may also be the lead vocalist Black Francis. Whoever it is, it does so much. It's also a song I've heard before so that helped. To the vocals, Francis is great in the tracks. Kim Deal also provides a lot support to the tracks too and is the reason why I adore Gigantic so much. Shout out to the track Vamos; encapsulates this album very well. Overall, there's a lot of tracks I loved listening to and there are an equal amount of tracks I don't click with at all. A lot of: FIRE > skip > skip > FIRE > skip > FIRE > FIRE > skip > skip > FIRE... T3: Where Is My Mind, Vamos, Something Against You
Love the pixies but Doolittle and Bossanova rank a little higher for me. This album is a big raw and less coherent
Tiene una canción muy conocida. Cantan mientras hablan. Cool.
Finally, a Pixies album I liked.
Great album, great album cover
RATING: 9.5/10 HIGHLIGHT: River Euphrates LOWLIGHT: Cactus
Where Is My Mind seems like it comes from an entirely different album. Not necessarily a different band, but a band that has gone through big changes and sounds nothing like their old selves. I think it might be because I came late to the party, and spent so much time listening to Pixies descendants (Nirvana), but the rest of the album didn’t hugely grab me. Gigantic was pretty cool.
Man the Pixies are good. This one just misses five stars, but Where Is My Mind? is as good as songs get.
Really really good. Ive heard the popular singles from this album but the rest is a pleasant surprise. It’s what other bands from this era would sound like if they were better. A couple tracks are misses but I have no reservations about exploring more from Pixies.
Fun listen. Pixies were ahead of their time because this just feels like the 90’s. Not gonna complain about that nice rack on the album cover either 👀
Amazing - but they will get even better
Best Songs: Where is my Mind Tony’s Theme Oh My Golly!
A misleading cover🤭like the rhythm, kind of interesting that they used some random screaming, But there was too much in some tracks in the last, felt too noisy. 3.75/5
Jagged glass music
Another interesting one that's good because of what it is AND what it isn't. A tight 30 minutes that never loses its energy despite being almost completely unfocused. If baseball had 13 bases, Surfer Rosa would hit all 13 of them. The wall of noise sounds on the wrong side of "in control", but it never rattles itself to pieces. Albini's production doesn't sand the hard edges off and that really works in the album's favor. When it's at its best you're like, "goddamn this band can take on the world." When it's at it's dumbest (Tony's Song) it's still fun and ready to bring you along if you're down. It's kind of a filter of all the things happening in punk, rock, experimental, surf, 80s alt stuff that gets shoved in a loud blender, and out the other side comes everything that was influenced by that mix specifically. I happen to be one of the standard nerds who prefers Doolittle to Surfer Rosa because Doolittle is just easier, but again, that's part of what makes Surfer Rosa so appealing. Probably a 4 because there are some pieces that are...still incubating? Like parts are a practice run for ideas that show up on Doolittle. But I'm a fanboy so I'm gonna give it a 5 anyway.
Great album. Not my favorite Pixies record, but I really love it. Thank you to Heather for showing me this band in High School and making me 100x cooler (in my own head).
Great band!!🎸
BOOBA It grew on me. Pretty dissonant and unpleasant at first and then I realized there’s a lot of humor here. Some decent music too. I hate Tony’s theme but are you really a fan if you *like* Tony’s theme?
4/7
This one gets better with every listen.
Tralla buena
Bone Machine, it's not heavy, but it is so indie. The Pixies' debut, Frank Black's intro to the world. Lead guitar is just playing whatever chords no regard it is dirty it is nasty in the best way. Frank Black harmonizing with Kim Deal on these tracks is awesome. They were never together just collaborators but wow. This is hard I like it. Tony's theme is just the right amount of silly for this rock. I liked this it was unique and fun and quite vibey. The energy was consistent which I feel alot of old punky indie rock lacks. This will be in my rotation Tiger Jaw, The strokes, even alot of bedroom pop take from this. This is kinda Car Seat Headrest too.
Love the Pixies. Best: Bone Machine, Gigantic, Where is My Mind?, Tony's Theme. Worst: Vamos
This is a song about the ripple legend Big Tone.
What's not to love! A Pixies classic!
BOOBA Forward-thinking controlled aggression. Production kind of wavers in quality but the songs all still sound very fresh. And yes, "Where Is My Mind?" transcends its "overplayed" status many times over- that song is gigantic (no pun intended, also a good song lol).
Achei legal.. mas e se eu disser que fiquei um pouco incomodado com o conteúdo lírico?
really really really liked, i would give it a 4.5 if i could.
Very calm music and overly a good album if you into some slow music 7/10
Lo escuchás y ves todo lo que explotó tres años después en el mundo. Pilar de un sonido. Rock alternativo se definió, en parte, con estos. 8/10
I loved this album, though it has its flaws. Great early grunge/punk. Fantastic listen, but it lacks structure. Songwriting is great and the instrumentation is incredible. The Pixies have a style that can't really be replicated. "Cactus" was my favorite.
one of the best indie rock bands ever for sure. love these mf. kim is so cool too wish she was on more pixies songs
Una nueva forma de introducirte el tema de los rock y de buena manera teniendo tantos signos hace de Que obviamente igual conectes con el álbum lo mejor del álbum obviamente es la cohesión musical que te lleva a través de cada pista que tiene
Where is my mind is a great song. The rest of the album is serviceable. 4 stars for the album cover alone.
Great record, i enjoyed it very much. Not my favorite Pixies record but that doesn't mean it is bad.
Fun, energetic, and concise. An all around good time with a few particularly great songs Fav tracks: River Euphrates, Gigantic, Vamos
My fav from the pixies. Excellent harsh sound to it, just brill.
Amazing
The Pixies always had a uniqueness typical of many of the bands that I'm drawn to, though i dont enjoy them as much as id like. Doolittle is a great album and this one is very good. It's a four star album that I'm not interested in repeating, odd though that may seem.
Favorite songs: Bone Machine, Gigantic, River Euphrates, Where Is My Mind?, Cactus
That’s weird. Was listening to my proto-punk new wave Monday afternoon day list playlist and bone machine came on shuffle. Then checked my album and it was this. Spooky stuff.
Got some pretty epic tracks on this album.
Max: 4/5
Funny hearing the influence this would later have 4*
Enjoyed this one. The vocals occasionally weren't too my taste but I did like them on most tracks. Felt varied and fun. Would listen again. Fav song: Where Is My Mind? - also liked Gigantic Least fav: Something Against You
Where is my mind is a banger but the rest are all very forgettable. Specific rating - 3.8 Fav song - where is my mind Least fav broken face
Really enjoyed, great tunes, good beats, sometimes a little on the raw side for me but I love the energy. I'm also so obsessed with the fact the drummers personal life section on wikipedia only says that he does magic and metal detecting. Favourite song: Where Is My Mind? Least: Tony's Theme
Well ahead of its time in 1988. Great unpolished garage rock record that still holds up today. Gigantic especially is a criminally underrated song. Faves: Gigantic, River Euphrates, Where Is My Mind
Very influential and entertaining to listen to
The kind of album that feels like a time capsule. Could only have achieved this status at the right place, right time, and has since become what seems like a Gen-X gold standard.
I liked this more than I expected and more than the other Pixies album I've listened to. It is weird and innovative. Hard to believe it came out nearly 40 years ago. It also can't be understated how much this album influenced all 90's rock/grunge.
fav songs: bone machine break my body broken face gigantic where is mind? punchy, quirky, hooky 70/100
YOUR BONE'S GOT A LITTLE MACHINE I'VE GOT! SOMETHING AGAINST YOU! Hearing this album again takes me back to being 16, riding around in my best friend's green 1995 Saturn SL, cranking Surfer Rosa, singing along with all the absurd lyrics as loudly as we could...... I'll always love this record. Always. This album feels like the bridge between punk and grunge. It has all of that punk energy with the melodies and dynamics of really great pop music. And it's so silly at times..... and so dark! I don't think it's perfect - the last four songs don't really do much for me at all. But if "Where Is My Mind?" isn't one of the great songs of the 20th century I don't know what is. FOUR STARS
Another great pixies album!
First time listening to this album in full. What a treat! Raw and clean.
Top, top, top drawer.
this was a fun alternative rock album. I added a lot of the songs to my playlists. Would recommend
Surfer Rosa sounds raw, noisy, and strangely catchy at the same time. I had already been a fan of Where Is My Mind?, while Cactus and Brick Is Red stand out for their driving riffs and dry, aggressive sound. It’s easy to hear why this album became so influential, but more than anything, it simply sounds cool.
Good album. This one is for sure a 3.5, and I'll round to 4
Better Bone Machine than Tom Waits. I think I like Russ band
Slow/quick, quiet/loud: Pixies!!
Another Albini banger.
Absolutely amazing listen from Pixies. Can not believe it took me this much to listen to this album.
This album really highlights just how fun The Pixies are. They bounce around within the rock genre, mixing post-punk with grunge, early alternative, and even inspired a lot of the indie movement. Where Is My Mind is the most memorable and well known track here. If that’s the only track you know from the Pixies, then you might be surprised with the rest. It bounces around showing different styles. Some tracks are poppy and fun. Others go all in on the punk and avant garde dismissal of music traditions. They were certainly unique, and their influence has continued for closing in on 4 decades.
Relatively short album tbh, a lot of songs hardly crack 2 minutes. I enjoyed this overall. The energy is just so infectious and in your face. I do feel, however, that there was a slight dip in quality by the end that I wasn’t enjoying as much as the rest of the album. Still solid stuff!
Leider überraschend viel Schrott dabei.
Broken face is an epic track when you pay attention to the lyrics Gigantic sounds like Avril Levine Tony's theme!
Great album. Not my absolute favorite Pixies album, but it's up there. I miss Kim Deal in this band so much... it's never been the same since.
the sophomore Pixies album, Doolittle, is one of my favorite rock albums ever made; about 100 records ago, when I reviewed it, I mentioned that it contained "the DNA for the modern alternative rock sound," a statement which also applies in some measure to the band's debut, Surfer Rosa. their two-vocalist dynamic, as well as their ability to traverse all sorts of musical and thematic territory, are arguably just as strong here, which makes sense given their first two LPs were released just about a year apart. earworms like the iconic "Where Is My Mind?" point ahead to the even poppier direction the Pixies would head in shortly afterwards. I'm more consistently wowed by the songwriting on Doolittle, but Surfer Rosa's engineering and production (courtesy of the legendary Steve Albini) might arguably be more interesting. as usual, he captures his subjects in the most natural, unadorned manner possible. apparently, he took two weeks working on the guitars, but only spent one day on vocals, meaning that Black Francis and Kim Deal had to give it their all. decent 8/10.
Another one of my favorite bands, and this is their real debut. I think Steve Albini is kind of an overrated douche, so dont want to rate it too high, but I love Pixies enough to overlook his contributions (or lack thereof, from some accounts I've read). Such an odd mix of sounds and lyrical themes....without this album, there is no Nirvana, no grunge, no nothing. Gotta round up for the influence, even if I personally prefer "Doolittle" and "Bossanova"
great album but not my favorite pixies at all which says a lot
More punky and less serious than Doolittle, and made me understood the band's vibes a little better. Still has that dissonant uncomfortable quality to its instrumentals, but I felt more on the even ground with it than I expected myself to be.
This album was quite fun and eccentric, with the occasional sexual allusion thrown in. It’s a youthful garage/grunge approach to alt rock. I love the mix of vibes - it was truly a chaotic mess in the best way possible. Bone Machine, Where is My Mind and Cactus were probably my favorite songs out of the album.
Great, but not as great as Doolittle imo. Where Is My Mind is an unbeatable song that almost transcends genre, and the rest of the album sounds well, well ahead of its time, but aside from WIMM I don't love the tracks on here in the way that I love "Debaser" and "Wave of Mutilation" and "Here Comes Your Man" and "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Mr Grieves" and "No 13 Baby" and "Hey" and "Gouge Away". Where there were obviously punk acts making noisy fast music before them, Pixies were one of the first to let their songs be quiet too and have that dynamic, which makes all the screaming and distortion a lot more tolerable. I really love Gigantic for this
really carried by the good songs, where is my mind is maybe a top 10 song ever and gigantic is a tune too. maybe i need to listen to this more but i felt the rest of the album was a little samey? felt pretty similar on the frank black album, maybe his stuff just isnt for me idk would probably rate this at least a point lower if it werent for where is my mind 3.5
3.5 rounded to for top slap on songs I like, where is my mind is a favourite of all time for me
Pretty cool. I enjoyed this but not every single sog.
Schmeckt
i really like how the songs blend well together, another one where i like the 2nd half much better
Good vibes. Where is my mind is of course a classic but other upbeat favorites on here as well.
Only individual standouts were Where is My Mind and Gigantic but generally liked the moody vibe. 3/4 line
Had a lot of fun listening.
Tirando uma música que foi horrível, o resto do álbum é bacana
i cant believe this was made in 1988. thank you tony.
Debut, Albini produced, Dolittle better for me Gigantic Where is my mind Vamos
It's not quite Doolittle but it's clearly building towards it. Feels like Where Is My Mind? Should be the closing track, no?
Highlights: Break My Body, Gigantic, River Euphrates, Where Is My Mind?, Cactus, Brick Is Red Lowlights: --------------- Great album. Biggest downside is it wasn't long enough.
Great ending to 80s but not a big fan of the era
Heard this once before all the way through. A great debut and some songs I love. As a lot of albums do, the ending drags a little bit so I wouldn't give it 5.
Nice!
Keeps on driving in a fun way, some precisely vague production if you know what I'm saying Highlights: "Something Against You", "Gigantic", "River Euphrates", "Where Is My Mind?", "Vamos"
It's been a minute since I've listened to this whole thing, and I'm struck now by how bizarre and fragmented it is. Some songs sound fully realized, while others sound like works in progress. "Bone Machine," "Gigantic," and of course "Where is My Mind?" are classics, though much of this is more curious than captivating. 3.5, rounding up to 4.
To state the obvious, Kim Deal should have written more songs for the Pixies. She was the best part. Some undeniable classics, and a generous amount of junk.
Smashing.
The Pixies came along at a time where alternative music was shifting... the complex, frantic arrangements and screaming vocals built around songs that start and stop and build up to crescendos would get very very popular soon. Seattle was listening... particularly Kurt Cobain. There is no doubt that Surfa Rosa is a landmark alt-rock staple and it should be in every collection.
Was good, I really liked a few of their songs. Also, the pixies are just iconic and ‘where is my mind’ is so coolios. Bone machine was a surprising favourite.
first one of these that sounds like something i might have actually sought out and listened to myself beforehand - lov how it oscillates between soft-spoken and comedic and jarringly intense on a dime.
Albini's engineering is great on this - sounds like 4 people at their peak in a room playing classic songs, no more, no less. Kim Deal's bass playing proves that you don't need to be flashy to be a great bass player, just consistent (and being cool helps too). It's the perfect punk counterpoint to Doolittle's pop, and they were the second band to show me that weirdo nerds can make the best music (Talking Heads were the first). I don't think it's as perfect as what they'd do next, so id stop short of granting it full marks, but still a fantastic album.
Pretty solid album. I'd never heard much of these guys before, but this list is turning me into a fan. Great song writing, and hits a soft spot I have for grunge. I'd heard Where is my Mind before, but this album is more than that great track. If this is their debut album, definitely ahead of its time. 4/5
Pretty dang cool. Some of the experimental stuff got a bit too whiney for me, though.
I don't want the overall theme of this project to be centred on my dislike of Nirvana, but it's throwing up so many competing bands that have so much more to offer it's hard to avoid. They're just having more fun with it. They sound cool, everything is a bit more impenetrable, authentic, a bit less concerned with being demonstrable in their detachment and a bit more actually detached. It was weird and experimental and they have good control of their instruments, voices and production to the point that it sounds modern even while sounding very late 80s/early 90s. I liked the little snapshots into whatever cool conversation was happening in this little pixies world and I liked that we were eavesdropping the whole album, a kid looking through a window at a party they weren't invited to, but desperately want to be at. This is the real teenage music, it's for the cool weirdos, not the fucking dorks.
очень люблю pixies, и этот альбом действительно хороший, но жду дулитл тут выделю от лучшего к просто хорошему: - bone machine - gygantic - broken face - cactus - vamos - brick is red ну и конечно where is my mind, хоть мне уже плохо становится, когда кто-то загадывает эту песню, она все равно замечательная.
Добротный, хороший альбом! Слушается легко и приятно. Определенно буду переслушивать.
In the past 40 random selections, I've now listened to all 3 Pixies albums on the list. I know it's just random chance, but it's definitely got me sick of them now. At least it ended on my favorite one of the bunch.
This is the best Pixies album. It has to be hard to come out with a great album on your first try. Living up to that must drive some bands crazy. Grunge owes a lot to these guys. Gigantic...tremendous song. River Euphrates is just yelling noises. Where Is My Mind? is an all-time great song. I can't not think about Fight Club when I hear it though. Perfect song for a perfect movie. I bet these guys love Lou Reed. Kind of a mixed bag of an album. I can do without the studio banter. The discussion of banging field hockey players is completely unnecessary. Everything on this album really is dwarfed by Gigantic and Where Is My Mind? but there are more good songs than bad.
Bangers bangers bangers
Good, very jamy
We’re back baby! This was my first album generated before I created the group so I had the privilege of listening to this album over 300 albums ago and it’s just as good now as it was then. Really iconic songs and just overall sound from the Pixies here on this album.
Never listened to the Pixies in high school but I had no music taste back then. I can hear why they are an influence to grunge bands in the 90’s
Love the pixies I think they’re so cool! Where is my mind is actually my alarm to wake up in the morning cause the “stop” is pretty alarming at full volume next to my head.
Cue the end of Fight Club
Good Lord, I needed the Pixies on this list. Are the Pixies (especially their debut) raw and unrefined? Yup, and in a great way. This is garage rock/baby grunge at its finest. Influence 5. Hits 2. Quality 4. Intangibles 5. Just really good, raw stuff from people who are clearly passionate about music without being pretentious asshats 4.
I wasn't into Pixies back in the late 80's, early 90's. They grew on me later, through the artists they influenced (Graham Coxon, Alice In Chains, Radiohead to an extent) and went back to finally discover them after David Bowie covered Cactus on Heathen. If you want to hear who really pushed the reset button on rock, forget Nirvana. They had the better PR, that's all. This is ground zero. This and Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr ... I wasn't into those either. Maybe it's time to revisit. Favourites here: the obvious Gigantic but also Cactus (thanks, Mr. Bowie), Where Is My Mind, Something Against You ... Oh, and we did play Here Comes Your Man with our highschool band, The Cornflakes. So I wasn't completely out of touch!
Great record.
My appreciation of the Pixies is very mood-based. Sometimes they really hit the spot, and sometimes they leave me unsatisfied. So, as much as I enjoyed this particular Surfer Rosa listening, I don't think I can go 5.
4/5 - The trio of Gigantic, River Euphrates, Where is My MInd? plus Bone Machine and Break My Body are great. I'm still gonna take Doolittle over Surfer Rosa.
As a teen, when this came out, I never got on with the discordant guitars, shouty lyrics and weird themes. Nowadays, I find that all a very refreshing change from boring, identikit alt-rock, although this, their debut, is a still a bit too rough around the edges. Did not expect to learn that sample on Spooky's Gargantuan is taken from this record.
Children's nursery rhymes, punk drumming, death metal vocals, pop hooks, body horror, art rock guitars: wildly inventive genius. A few songs on side two slip a bit, but this record is nearly perfect.
Great album, taking 80s indy rock to new heights and laying the groundwork for the 90s.
Very good rock album, I liked it, sobeno, I liked the song Something Against You
Where is my mind and the first two tracks are pretty solid. I might spin this one again.
Seems like a lifetime ago. But still sounds incredibly fresh and fantastic
Not music for ketamine: too intense, aggressive, abrasive; immediately felt anxious paranoia. By all measures, this should have already been in the rotation, but never explored them beyond 'Where is my mind" and Doolittle. Super influential on many of my favorite artists, hard to believe that this was released in 1987. Though I was only 8 at the time, I don't remember hearing anything like this until my early teens when grunge broke out. Initial impression: grower, not shower. Score: 4/5 Can't imagine any of the 1001 will score below 4...
Fast, frantic and to the point. You just know they are having fun. Love the band, love the production, especially that iconic bass sound. And yeah, this album gave birth to one of the best songs ever written 7 / 10 Best track/s: Where Is My Mind, Vamos, Gigantic
really good record felt full
Where is my mind is so good it kind of makes the rest of the album worse…
Pretty great album. A little shapeless at times, you can definitely feel the diference between most tracks in the album, and an iconic track like "Where is My Mind?". Still, great energy throughout!
"Surfer Rosa" by Pixies is a classic alt-rock album and one I really enjoy. Pretty much everyone knows the masterpiece that is "Where Is My Mind", but there are plenty of other great songs on this record that easily stand on their own. While it is not something I would listen to every single day, it is an album I keep coming back to over and over again. It has become a real staple in my collection over the years, one of those records that never really disappears from my rotation. There is not much more to say about it. It is just a solid album that holds up very well.
Nice and fast-paced. They seem to be singing about some bullshit. My favorite bit of bullshit was Tony’s Theme.
Just like the other Pixies albums there is some great stuff and some stuff that’s a little far out. All around good.
really fun, honestly did a double take hearing pixies
Really great album. Musically very good but also quite interesting. I should listen to the Pixies more. 4.5 but to the 4 side.
This album sounds like the best group of teenagers that formed a rock band in somebody's garage and just decided to record what they did over the course of a week or two. Then edit together the best bits. Which might be what it actually is. I found this album with the huge hit Where is my mind? Thank you Fight Club. It wasnt until later that I realised that this album had another amazing song Gigantic that is more raw and showcases Kim's voice as well as Francis's. Its raw, melodic, aggressive, fun and catchy. No wonder it has influenced so many others. (3.899)
Another record I've listened to a lot, though it's been awhile, so it was nice to revisit. It starts out absolutely banging on the intro to "Bone Machine" and gives you a pretty great idea of where it's going. There's a good reason Pixies have influenced dozens of other bands. And 13 songs, 34 minutes? Hard to beat a record that gets you in and out that quick
Their other album (doolittle) has set an high bar, that this album doesn't reach. Some songs sound off.
Not as many hooks as Doolittle so it’s a harder listen but there are still some solid tracks on it
So close to a 5. Some stellar songs here with ‘gigantic’ being the standout for me. Shoots by at just over 30 mins and doesn’t sound like it’s aged a day. Just loses itself a little towards the end I felt, but some great exercises in songwriting that is quick and to the point and dies a lot with what sounds like minimal instruments and minimal additional production needed.
49/1089 3.9686* A superb album and a true inspiration for some of the people who discovered it when it came out *cough* kurt Cobain *cough*. The Pixies were groundbreakers at the time and this is an album that helped influence a new genre of rock. Hits....wimm, gigantic, bone machine
BRUDER SO SCHWER weil eig liebe ich pixies aber das ist halt nicht mein FAV album help am liebsten 3.5
Just knew about their bigger hits, but damn they have so much to offer.
Pixies were just on this week’s Smartless podcast and besides Where Is My Mind, I didn’t know there music at all. I could see being into this had I heard it in the ‘90s and I may come back and revisit this to learn the music better but for now I’ll give it a 4
Nothing else sounds like this. That’s a good a bad thing. Mostly good. Chaotic while still under control. Wild in a true sense.
4.5 stars
wasn't expecting to like this
A fan of this genre, I know I will have pleasant things to say about it. There's something about this album that feels more in touch with grunge's punk roots than most any other grunge project I have heard. Coming from the present day, knowing gigantic was the single feels so wrong because where is my mind became such a bigger song for the band. It runs the gambit from melodic, spacey, almost psychedelic songs to abrasive, in your face, yelling. The sound of this album is so unique that it is hard to judge in comparison to anything. On its own, it stands as an experimental entry to what punk was becoming at the time and should be experienced much like one has to see a Duchamp work, wrong and right in unexpected ways.
Though not on par with "Doolittle" or "Bossanova," this is a fun, chaotic record with a few of their best songs on it. Kim Deal's harmonies and lead vocals are a great balance to Black Francis' moanings and wailing. "Gigantic" and "Where Is My Mind" alone make it a great album. Playful musical anarchy is how I would describe it.
The chemistry between Black Francis and Kim Deal shines through especially on Surfer Rosa, where either can take the lead and kill it while the other provides fun, chaotic harmony. Its not as cohesive as Doolittle and not as polished as Trompe le Monde or Bossanova. Gigantic and Where is my Mind are two of their best songs, and others here kind of pale in comparison, while i think some of their other records are more balanced and consistently fantastic. But still, this album is a ton of anarchic fun that represents what Pixies were all about.
Great vibes
I don't listen to rock much. So it's not an album I'll listen to again. It was nice.
I love Pixies
This is a significant album with some quality tracks. "Where Is My Mind?" is an undeniable classic, what they're most known for. The opening track "Bone Machine" is another great one. The album is full of clear indications of Kurt Cobain's influence from Pixies.
I'm hit and miss with the Pixies. The are some songs I really love, but others are too grating for me to enjoy. Overall this album was great, but I won't be revisiting it much.
In a pre-90s indie rock world, one where a big, reverbed drum sound was preferred over Kinks-like guitars, The Pixies must've hit like an epileptic mule on electrotherapy. Also worth saying, as album-cover breasts go, and with apologies to Liz Phair, this is up there with Electric Ladyland, Tigermilk, Roxy Music and The Slits. Sensational. I am still probably an outlier amongst Pixies admirers and think 'Bossanova' their pinnacle. But of course this remains an excellent album, and places alongside The Stone Roses for ushering in a new decade of alternative rock music.

Jättebra album! Lite corny ibland. Gillar Bone Machine och Where is my Mind extra mycket.
Honestly have never listened to Pixies.. or so I thought, pretty good album and had a few songs I’ve heard before but never knew who they were by. Good grunge vibes
Before Listening: 2nd album from the 80’s, also 2nd album I already have a song saved from! High hopes for this one. During Listening: VERY strong start, William describes them as ahead of their time and I truly understand that for them. It’s energetic, spirited, and a lot of fun. After Listening: I really enjoyed the spunkiness of the album, I think it will take a couple listens to really enjoy some of the songs enough to save them to my library. Before listening: 1/13 songs After listening: 3/13 songs
awesome
Classic late 80s rock, ebbs into the early 90s grunge.
Where is My Mind is best known now, but there are other good songs too. I like Bone Machine and Gigantic.
A lot more fun than Bossanova
Where is my mind alone solidifies this as a solid 4*
Always been a fan of early Pixies. Eventually, they went a little bit mainstream, but this first one is great.
High School for me, I was for the most part a metal head. But in 1991 when "Smells Like Teen Spirit" hit the radio, my musical tastes started to go in different directions. I never went back to listen to the back catalog of bands that influenced bands like, Nirvana, Soundgraden, I only moved forward, for the few years in the nineties, until even the 90s started to sound old, and then I just moved on to other things entirely. Ah those formative years in your early twenties when your tastes change so much, I never went back to explore these early genres in the making. So hearing an album like this, was like fresh music to my ears. And now with the world of streaming I can go back and re-discover any old genre I want.
so very vampire esque i def gotta listen to this one again, 8/10
So great
Classic! If only it had two or three fillers less, it would be perfect. Fav: Gigantic
Loved the brief dialogue intermission in I’m amazed. Classic where is my mind. Fav was gigantic!
What a good first album to get. Didn't want it to end.
Poh
Entspricht nicht genau dem, was ich gerade gerne höre aber ich checke, weshalb das Album cool ist und ich sehe mich das im Frühling nochmal hören Ich kann raushören, dass Mother Mother Inspiration von den Pixies hat
Really enjoyed this one. I loved the stripped down sound- blending raw instrumentation with catchy lyrics and emotional subject. It was a interesting mix of grungey pop-punk garage rock with pop elements. Overall- very solid album
Pleasant, with some hits !!! 3.5
Classic for a reason.
Song notes: Gigantic - I love Kim Deal's voice! I really like this song, it instantly perked me back up. River Euphrates has great energy. Where is my Mind was one of my favourite songs as a teen and I'm just as excited to hear it now as I did then. Vamos is an entire vibe, I could live in this song. Overall I feel like I'm in the room with them, it's such a raw and unfiltered album. They are thrashing and jamming and yelling and I'm just hiding there, along for the ride.
Where is my mind brings this to a 4 but otherwise a 3
Surfer Rosa was an excellent album and I think I enjoy punk rock more
Love the instrumental but the vocals were okay
Pixies...very avant-garde, sound like the Pixies. Unfair rating from me for the reason they're up there as an influencial favorite. Just different in their own way, yet they have command and make you listen. Great timing, super creative, awesome production!
i like bone machine and gigantic. where is my mind. this one caught me off guard
A little wild, a little loud, a little weird and a lot sexy. Bangers the whole way through
I do really like this album. Of course "Where Is My Mind?" is seminal. Quintessential. All of the things. I'm not sure if the rest of the album holds up.
Broken Face stood out and of course Where Is My Mind? Such a Nirvana before Nirvana album. 4.5/5
I wanted to like this album so much more than i did. Dont get me wrong its a great album and one that will be getting a solid 7/10 for me, but it seemed to initially have everything i was looking for. Intressting soundscape. Lots of diversity between songs. An intresting voice with a unique rythm and lyrical style. It was so close to being a 5 star for me. Still an amazing album and a great listen. Although i can appriciate more electronic sounds as well this band really captures what i want in sounding diffrent. Yes it uses the standard setup of gituar drum and a singer but it doesnt sound like a standard setup at all and thats what i like.
Ugh. I need half stars. This is an easy 3.5. Really a pretty damn good album. great? No. but I like the messiness and the noisiness of it.
I like the Pixies a lot and this is short, solid album. I like the switching between the vocalists. I like Kim’s voice. Where is My Mind is an incredible song.
I mean. Full of hits. Love it. 4.5
i like the pixies the way a lot of my peers want me to like sonic youth. sorry but sometimes i want a hook
Weird. Short. Pretty lady on the cover. Good stuff
4 out of 5 More Pixies. Great album.
O primeiro do Pixies, e um dos mais noiosos. As guitarras aqui cantam e gemem. 4.5/5
Such a marker with roots and as the roots of so many musical trees.
Außer where is my mind nichts so bemerkenswertes dabei
Pixies have never really clicked for me, but this album came the closest. By the end it grew on me a bit, and ended up being a surprisingly good listen!
It’s pretty rare that an album gets made where you can hear the next decade of popular music when you listen to it. I definitely would have thought that this came out in the 90s, I can’t imagine what young, future musicians thought when they heard this for the first time. 4/5
This is a band that I always assumed was a one hit wonder, because the “fight club” song is so popular and genuinely on another level. Like it’s easily one of the greatest alt rock songs of all time. So I assumed there wouldn’t be a lot else going on this album, which is completely inaccurate. This album is definitely being carried by “where’s my mind” but it’s got a lot of other great songs buried on it. The stand outs for me that really felt like bold risks were “broken face”, “gigantic”, and “cactus”. It’s so close to being a no skip album but there are a few forgettable tracks on this album. But despite that, this is a totally stellar album. Totally deserves to be on this list and definitely worth your time if you like alt rock.
Essential alternative guitar record
Strong 4
Good album
Amazing how similar yet how different it is from Doolittle. Leans more surfer rock (unsurprisingly) than punk. Gigantic and Where is my mind both absolute killer songs. Only four stars, because again a little uneven in quality. Funnily enough, unlike Doolittle, I find Surfer Rosa starts off a little weak but then improves as it goes along.
If Dolittle is their Nevermind, this is their bleach
🤯
Cracking, classic album!
Most enjoyable listen of this album for me so far, used to not be to into it but there’s some great songs here I’ve overlooked
The 1990’s started here! OK, that might be an exaggeration. But it’s pretty obvious how this influenced some of the biggest acts of the decade that followed (parts of Nevermind are just like a more polished version of this). For that reason alone, Surfer Rosa belongs on this list. So, how does it fare on its own - just as an album to listen to? Pretty well if you ask me. I especially like the huge drum sound. 4/5
Damned good album
Cool as fuck.
I was never a Pixies guy, never got them, but I also hadn't listened to Surfer Rosa, and this album grabbed me.
Would be perfect without the "skit" style samples about field hockey players and touching Kim's amp.
De la bonne violence.
Great
Very raw and almost shrill but that’s what makes this great. It kind of makes it sound like you’re there in the recording session as a result, in some cases it’s too raw because of the dialogue they included between band members and sometimes the songs can be a bit too chaotic as the production makes each instrument kind of blare out with loudness, which again is super awesome for the most part but I felt for some songs it was a bit too chaotic. The guitar sound is so distorted in the best way, the drums sounds like it’s straight up recorded in a garage, the bass is looming in a kind of dark way and the vocals are very in your face and angry at points. It all comes together in either a culmination or clash of sound which both work very well. It also has that song that’s used everywhere. Favourites: Break my body, something against you, Broken face, Gigantic, River Euphrates and Brick is red. Overall, 8/10.
Blank Frack
good and has that one really good song
Lovely art punk from the late 80s. Surfer Rosa was always in my early teen rotation although I didn't understand the weight it may have carried as an influential grunge and punk album. To me this is abrasive, haste, and ultimately unique sounding. Almost to a point of which it sounds brand new, but I am wise because of what age I found this album originally. The pixies always do well.
This is outside of my usual listening but I cannot deny the quality. Very fun album. Favorite Song: Vamos
Most was good, some songs were misses
It's odd not listening to this paired with Come On Pilgrim. Both are raw early Pixies, with a sort of grotesque or nihilistic underground sentiment, like they just wanted to do whatever they wanted without worrying about being famous. It's punk without adhering to the common punk sound or formula. Steve Albini is the producer here on Surfer Rosa, and shout out to him for capturing that raw sound. As a full album, lyrically it's a bit all over the place thematically. What sticks out to me are the themes of body horror and mutilation, like a weird atmosphere of Thomas Ligotti or surrealism of William S. Burroughs. Yet there flows a warmth in the Spanish lyrics and some upbeat percussion. Each song is like a chopped up body part, and when they are put back together, things don't quite fit right, and it's sliced up and maybe you want to look away, but it's too interesting not to look at, and after a bit you kind of recognize familiar pieces and where they belong. What doesn't work for me is the candid studio banter, e.g. "you fucking DIE" and "he was into field hockey players", which are a bit cheesy or too try-hard in my opinion. And while I respect Kim Deal, especially her work in The Breeders, "Gigantic" feels very out of place on this album-- the repeated chorus of "Gi-gan-tic" is boring and annoying to my ears-- and it disrupts the flow of Francis basically losing his mind. In fact, I think the album does have a problem with the flow of songs, though I'm not sure how to correct it, and it may be unavoidable or even intentional as a way to instill some discomfort or disorientation in the listener. The influence of the Pixies doesn't need to be stated again. It's an essential listen in alt rock, but not my favorite of theirs.
Don't consider myself punk but maybe just this once... very fun, very rambunctious, but not everyday listening Best songs: Tony's theme, Brick is Red
8/10
Not as good as the first listen
Bursting with raw, manic energy. The rough draft of a sound that would go on to influence a wave of alt-rock bands in the 90s. Rough around the edges, unfiltered, awesome.
Bloody great album, I prefer Doolittle personally but honestly who the hell cares it's great.

Where is my mind
The Pixies first album came out of nowhere. It's not punk, new wave, or emocore/post hardcore. It's not No, the amalgamation of influence and sound is a weirder, artsier offering; able to be poppy as hell ("Gigantic"), strange ("Broken Face"), and anthemic ("Where is My Mind?"). Frank Black/Black Francis and Kim Deal are incredible together. You can hear the band's enthusiasm through their songs and it's incredibly endearing; just a bunch of goofballs simply stoked to be making music. Veteran engineer, Steve Albini (RIP) captures the Pixies' ineffable left field energy, propelling the album to incredible heights. The whole thing's a blast. An incredible debut.
Great Album. Gigantic and where is my mind are the ones people will know but there's not a bad track on it and it's a beautiful way to spend 30 minutes
Innovative indie punk - those lyrics though…oooof brutal…sound has B-52s with distortion? Where is my mind onward in the album though is where this album thrives.
Some great tracks
Keeping abreast of this album cover was a nice way to get up in the morning. The Pixies are always a fun band to listen to because each album is a little different. This one is a more punk, more raw. Broken Faces felt like polished garage rock and made me want to pop a Coke and smell the cigarette smoke under some crappy, too hot second-hand stage lights hanging from the rafters. Gigantic was also cool hearing Kim Deal take lead, which definitely gave a taste of Breeders days to come. I liked Tony’s Theme best because if I was to who someone an example of the Pixies, this one kind of had it all: the punk, the random, the Black/Deal vocals; the sharpened edge. I even liked the random studio inclusion in Oh, My Golly! I actually really liked this whole album. …and the cover was very artistic and symmetrical. I recommend taking a closer look at the compositions and exposure quality of the photo.
Unpolished? Perhaps. But otherwise, a compact album full of energy and vigour.
Generally enjoy the sound and style, but wish there was another great song or two in the album
So many better tracks than I expected off one album.
I love the weirdo vibes of the Pixies. Did a full deep dive on them a year back & their post reunion stuff is some of the worst music I’ve ever heard.
I’m not the biggest Pixies fan and I know we’ve talked about influential bands being on this list for the sake of them being influential but this album rocks.
Better than Coldplay
Love the pixies music. Unique
Gigantic! Where is My Mind! Banger of an album. Rock heavy, great listen.
Good garage rock
I've always found Surfer Rosa to be really but just not Doolittle...
Gigantic and Where Is My Mind? are the standout tracks on this one, but the rest of the album is pretty good. My second favorite Pixies album.
Never heard the pixies before I like em👍🏿👍🏿
I’ve been meaning to listen to this for a long time, I love where is my mind so I was pretty excited. And it was good, I’m excited for Doolittle. Favorites: Bone Machine, Gigantic, Where is my Mind?
4.5
4.5
Easily the best Pixies albums. Killer Albini production/engineering. Some of their most beloved songs. Pretty zippy at 33 minutes unlike most other Pixies albums which are often drag at 39 minutes. Also nice rack. Probably the nice rack factor that lifts it up to 4.
Back in university one of my coworkers in the kitchen tried to sell me his tickets to the Pixies show in Winnipeg. He claimed it was the last tour they were going to play to try and drive value in his tickets. I didn’t fall for his tricks seeing as they are still touring today. Maybe I was just too poor to justify going to live shows for bands I’d never heard of. Listening to this album today, I wish I went to that show. The Pixies are definitely a style of music that I’ve been to many other similar artists shows live. So I’m sure I would have had a blast rocking out with them in ~2009. The track Where Is My Mind? Is the only song I’m aware of listening too. This album is very nostalgic for me of an era of time in my life. Despite not following the pixies closely I’m sure much of the music I listened to may have been inspired by them to some degree.
Great album. Pixies rule.
I've heard plenty of Doolittle before, but never ventured too far into other Pixies albums besides more known songs like Where Is My Mind. This album was pretty enjoyable. Frequently rides the line between alt and punk.
this was... not what i expected. i've listened to doolittle a decent amount and heard most of pixies' singles, but this was pretty out there and experimental. i didn't hate it and i can see where bands like nirvana and smashing pumpkins drew their inspiration, but this isn't exactly a comfort album or one that gets the party started. i think i had pretty much heard all the good cuts before today. favorites: bone machine, gigantic, where is my mind, vamos (surfer rosa)
This is another one of those albums where I am surprised a hit is surrounded by songs not on the same level. Great album for the garage band feels.
Looking back at the Pixies albums I've listened to before, and I seem to prefer their earlier stuff, clichéd as that may sound. This is good, short and punchy like all good punk.
This was really good. I have heard of Pixies, but never listened to them other than Where Is My Mind. I was very pleasantly surprised. This music is right up my alley. I like the shorter and more playful tracks and the longer and sometimes emotional tracks. I'll absolutely come back to this album.
Not the biggest indie rock guy but I enjoyed this it goes without saying that the standout track was Where Is My Mind? but everything here was still solid and executed on its vibe perfectly. Other standouts were Gigantic, River Euphrates, Tony's Theme, Oh My Golly!, Vamos, and I'm Amazed. 8/10.
Big lad
Pixies have confidently cemented there place as arguably the most important alt rock band I’d say, I mean without them you most likely don’t get the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Weezer, I could go on. Whilst I don’t think this album is as consistent as Doolittle, Come on Pilgrim or Bossanova, it still has some of there best individual songs on it, Bone Machine is a roaring opening track and really optimises the sound they pioneered, its raw, stripped down and in your face. Kims vocals in Gigantic are beautifully arranged, and I love how the guitar kicks in and out of the song giving it the presence the song title promises. Where is my mind obviously needs no explanation as to why it’s such a great song, it just fucking is. Enjoyed re listening to this as it reminded me how utterly utterly flawless of a catalogue this amazing band has, they truly have created some of the best rock music of the late 80s and 90s and there sound has proven to be of inspiration of so many bands past and present. Proper rockstars 🤟 4.1/5 FTW
Fun. Sounds much more modern than the release date would otherwise indicate.
Pixies are on my never ending list of bands that I keep meaning to delve into. Any tracks I’ve heard down the years I’ve always liked but today was the first time listening to an album in full. I did really enjoy it overall without it absolutely blowing me away. In saying that it didn’t help that I kept having to stop and start listening to it Top Track - Where Is My Mind
Oh my golly Tony just broke my face now I can’t find my mind! Anyways this shit went incredibly hard. Love the punk rock/ noise rock influences.
This was really good. Some weird but interesting stuff alongside the other type music I've heard from them.
Nirvana wouldn’t be shit without the pixies
The Pixies... when you are like me and for a long time only knew them from the banger end song from Fightclub, discovering their roughness when finally deciding to listen to a whole album was a fantastic experience. Thanks to this list, I relieved that moment a little. They have such an unique sound and I really wanted to give their solid debut a five star rating for rawness alone. It is just so rough around the edges that I can't, but I love them. When an album has a great cover, I normally say it so euh... yeah this is a great cover and it's not only because it features an awesome rack.
A great album with really enjoyable harsh sounds. I wonder why not more songs are better known! I truly enjoyed it from start to finnish! I would give it a 4/5 or a strong 8 to a feint 9 out of 10
Круто!!! Но Bossanova мне понравился больше!
At first I really wasn't sure, but boy did it grow on me. I feel as though with this album, I finally understand what exactly alt-rock, and punk rock are, as well as why they appeal. It gives voice to the fringe, unapologetic in its anthems of The Weird. You don't care about the world, and this music doesn't care about you. And there's a strange comfort in that. Basically liked the whole album, maybe not Bone Machine or River Euphrates.
I love this record, but sometimes it's so slapdash it prevents me adoring it
Classic
good record, some tunes, i like pixies, they have a good sound
Proto-Grunge, I guess (though I never really thought of it that way until I embarked on this mind-broadening 1001-Albums project). “Gigantic” is pretty wonderful. Other songs (e.g., “Where Is My Mind?”) have their moments, too. I lived through this era, and this actually sounds to me now like the 80s were giving way to something new. I’m not sure the album is quite a four-star outing (in this project, where nearly everything is remarkable), but it’s darn close.
Seminal
This is a pretty great album from Pixies. I don't think it captured lightning in a bottle in the same way doolittle did it has some stellar moments and I'm sure some people would call this album their favorite. This is a strong 4
(. ) (. )
This was enjoyable but maybe I’m missing something about why it’s so highly regarded. Maybe it’s the timing of its release being earlier than similar music, but hadn’t Dinosaur Jr been doing similar stuff for years? In any case, I enjoy the double singers, the upbeat sound despite the sometimes nonsensical lyrics, the interludes, etc. It’s a great indie rock album that is better than just Gigantic and Where is My Mind.
Not my favorite Pixies album, but still great. Where is my mind is a fantastic song.
A classic. Pixies rule and so does this album.
Vet album! Kende de pixies helemaal niet, maar best wel tof!
OOOOOuuuu…stop. ✋ why does black francis kinda sound like mickey mouse on some of these songs? well i like it anyway. but it’s not my favorite… fav tracks: gigantic; where is my mind?; oh my golly!
This was awesome. The epitome of the kind of 90s alt rock that everyone has been trying to replicate for the last thirty years. It's visceral and emotional and they just sound cool.
Good
Quiet / loud. Soft verses / explosive choruses. Raw, abrasive, unusually structured tracks. A few more accessible moments amongst the chaotically jagged guitar riffs and the screaming vocals. All this together makes for a fantastic listening experience. Kicking off the album with bone machine sets the mood and tempo - those drums followed by that guitar riff are elite. The erratic almost spoken vocals followed by screams and a wall of guitar. Oh oh oh oh oh oh ohhhh. I think Kim Deal's backing vocals are integral and her lead vocals on gigantic are not to be overlooked either. In fact she is one of my favourite things about the album. Favourite track has to be Where is My Mind, its popular for good reason. Also love Broken Face and Gigantic. 8.5/10
Nice album
Energetic.
Not bad. Not great.
Grunge well before grunge was a thing.
