10/10 great catchy album yet overrated

look, there's a reason this album is held in such high esteem. not only was it a groundbreaking album for rock music that shifted the genre, but man, every song on here is really great. obviously cobain had more talent in his pinky than most people on this planet ever have and had such a way of crafting great music intertwined with pain, but i also have to shout out both krist novoselic and dave grohl both for their excellence on this album too. i feel like often they become footnotes to their bandmate on this one and they are integral to this album. i mean what can i say about this one that hasn't already been said?

Как оказалось, мне нравится Нирвана. Нравится звучание. Нравится голос Курта. Turns out I like Nirvana. Like the sound. Like Kurt's voice.

A massive part of my early 20’s for many reasons. Absolutely fantastic, for me there are some of the greatest songs ever on this album. Endless, nameless does let it down a tad though.

Great album from a great band

The genesis of grunge. What else is there to say?

Killer. One of the all time greats.

Classic album and its popular for a reason. So so so good!! Overall: 5/5

10/10 dont even need to listen to it again

Can't fight the nostalgia rating on this one. <3

This album changed my life.

Obviously

I’m a kid again. A 90s grunge kid.

Fantastic album. A friend got me the single for Smells Like Teen Spirit and it was mind blowing. Almost every song is a classic.

Very big album for me growing up. Not sure what else there is to say.

Really holds up!

Dave grill

I can't rate this fairly, because these songs have been deservedly played to death on the radio. Normally I give an album a 5 if I want to download it and listen to it regularly (even if it's not my favorite). I think this would reach that bar, if not for the radio. If I were to stick to my scale dogmatically, this would get a 3: I enjoyed the listen but am not going back to do it again.

This albums still bangs as hard as it ever did. Every time I listen to it it still feels fresh and literally perfect. How defining of my anger it is. It also exemplifies how absolutely tight sounding grungy and punk can be. The production and execution of every beat is remarkable.

***** I finally picked up a copy of this record! And I got a special limited edition colored vinyl too! I bought it at Target for $11. Sorry, Kurt. Don't blame me, blame David Geffen. Hopefully the proceeds go towards providing a brighter future to your grandbaby, the child of Frances Bean and Riley Hawk (Tony Hawk's Son). ***** I won't mention all of the hyperbolic shit about Nevermind that you've heard over and over again, and I'm going to skip even taking a critical look at this in regards to style, substance, theme, or whatever the fuck I base these reviews on. I want to take this moment to thank Justin Banham, aka just-in-jammin, aka BFF, aka the guy who introduced me to this record the summer after freshman year of high school and started me on the path to discovering MUSIC. Before this, my music taste was pretty much dogshit. My parents had the musical taste of Marge Simpson ("music is non of my business"). I remember discovering Napster and showing it to my Dad, and told him it could download any song ever! I said, "think of a song, any song!" It took him a while. He finally thought up Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes "If You Don't Know Me By Now". It's a good song, but I had never heard him play this song, and he didn't have a favorite song? My mom's musical taste was the adult contemporary radio station and Amy Grant's Christmas record. I think I remember a Disco Duck LP floating around somewhere. My parents aren't religious, I don't think? Or at least they aren't anymore, but when I was a kid they seemed to believe that church was important. I think they thought that this was like a parental imperative, and this was the thing to do rather than like have serious thoughtful discussions about morals or sex or whatever. I don't know. What I'm getting at is- Christian Rock. This was forced upon me, as like a...here! You can listen to this! Cool, right? I think this happened after the neighbor girl lent me her copy of "Dookie" by Green Day, and my dad found the lyric sheet. Ah, so close to something relatively cool! So flash-forward to high school, I met this kid who sold me some CDs he didn't listen to anymore (he decided he was a hardcore punk), so I had a Sublime CD, a Godsmack CD, and the soundtrack to the South Park movie (which I hadn't seen yet, so I didn't understand the context/joke of these songs). I also had a Barenaked Ladies CD (the first CD I bought) and a Matchbox 20 CD. Wow! Secular music! Then that summer, I started hanging out with Justin, and heard this record. As a Fearless Freak once said, "And suddenly, everything has changed". From this point on, I didn't ditch ALL of the previously mentioned garbage from my collection (Jars of Clay is pretty good actually, but goodbye Godsmack), but my taste just got better and better. Soon I got my first job at KFC and 95% of my weekly paycheck went to buying used CDs from Angelo's. And of course listening to "Nevermind" led to the unplugged record, which lead to the Meat Puppet's "II", and the Vaseline's "Way of the Vaselines". Soon after it was Radiohead, Beck, Flaming Lips, and Green Day again! My Dad found Dookie again! This time I left his house after a huge argument! It was Smashing Pumpkins, Super Furry Animals, more, more, MORE! I was turned on to allmusic.com by another friend, and that lead to crazy rabbit-holes of discovery. This has been my MO ever since. It only gets better, richer, deeper. My appreciation for music has lead to many lasting friendships with kindred spirits who share this appreciation and thirst for that feeling of euphoria and epiphany of discovering your new favorite record. One of the things that made me fall in love with my wife was her excellent taste in music. I don't know what, who, WHY I would be without music. I am so grateful to all of the people that have influenced my taste over the years, and turned me on to so much good shit, and I only hope to pay it forward if I can. Thank you friends, thank you bloggers, and most of all, thank you Justin.

What's left to say about Nevermind?

Obviously a classic. Heard this so many times, and the vocals, songwriting, and catchiness of the record still amaze me. An almost perfect album with such universal appeal, yet also a breakthrough in the 90s mainstream.

Groundbreaking album I still listen to frequently. There is “something in the way” this sounds….

There's a reason this is the most classic grunge album of all time. The performance is amazing but it's a songwriting that really sets apart

This is probably my least favourite Nirvana record, which is really not saying anything at all because I believe it to be damn near perfect. It starts a little slow with four of the first five songs being relatively overplayed radio singles, but the second half of this record is absolutely fantastic. From Krist Novoselic’s snotty sarcastic lil’ vocal cover of “Get together” to kick off the track “Territorial Pissings” to the almost sludgy breakdown in “Drain You” the next few songs are excellent and well worthy of radio airplay. “Lounge Act” is far and away my favourite song on this album, the power and raw grit that Kurt Cobain spits into the second verse alone make this track exceptional, but everything else about it just works so well. The groovy bass line, the simple yet frantic drums, and the sloppy power chords all come together into something that is truly far greater than the sum of its parts. “Stay Away” is a pretty standard grunge track, but it certainly holds its own. The call and answer style verses with two very different styles of Kurt Cobain’s vocals adds some really interesting depth. “On a Plain” shows the heavy influence that the meat puppets had on Kurt Cobain’s songwriting, even the vocal harmony’s in the chorus are reminiscent of the kirkwood brothers. “Something in the Way” is a track that I recently learned has become super popular in the modern era, because of some movie or TikTok or something, I’m not sure. But regardless of that, this song is beautiful, raw, delicate, and an example of Kurt Cobain really baring his soul for all to see. The kind of whispered vulnerability is rare for nirvana, but it’s truly a beautiful song. The last track on the record “Endless, Nameless” is the only song that i feel showcases the punk influences that really made grunge what it was. It’s caustic and abrasive and this style of music is what originally drew me into Nirvana. It’s hard to complain about an album that is both insanely influential, but also something that I’ve grown up with. 6*

What is there to say about albums that defined entire generations so much as did ‘Nevermind’? It’s Nirvana. Everyone likes Nirvana, except people who are really into 90s grunge and feel like saying they like Nirvana would be too basic. But there’s a reason Nirvana was so much more successful than all but one or two of their peers. This album is a hell of a lot more complex and interesting than, say, the Dinosaur Jr or Mudhoney albums we’ve reviewed for this project. You can hear the influence of bands like the Pixies in the variance in mood, tempo and volume, and Sonic Youth in some of the more droning sections. While all of these bands were pretty successful on their own, Nirvana managed to roll them up and add some special secret sauce that just really worked. It’s a remarkable album. The first six songs come out massively swinging, but my personal favorite is ending the album with “Something In the Way” into “Endless, Nameless”.

An absolute classic for a reason!

Goated

Awesome album top to bottom

Nevermind is a genuinely amazing album but i don't think that's very surprising considering that this is the essential grunge album. There is, of course, all the singles including Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Come As You Are and Lithium all of which i hear on the radio quite a lot and are all very much great songs but the other tracks on this album are no slouches either. The guitars and Kurt's vocals are of course major highlights but the bass is also a huge highlight. I also like how similar to Bug by Dinosaur Jr, it ends with a really heavy song which is always something i love. I still think In Utero is a little bit better but this album is still an absolutely excellent one regardless. Best Song: Come As You Are Worst Song: Polly Side note: Since i will be knocking Nirvana off my unlistened albums list for this project, here are my rankings for each of their albums: 1. In Utero 2. Nevermind 3. MTV Unplugged In New York

I had not listened to this in over ten years, thinking I had grown out of it. But looking back on it now, me and every other confused teen who ever connected to this at some point carries this record in their soul. I am majorly biased, but this one will keep being important for me. Don't skip anything, let "something in the way" hit you, jump like an idiot to territorial pissings, plant some houses to breed, or don't, that's what it's about after all.

Guns n' Roses found dead in a ditch

Overall: 10/10 It's Nevermind. I could think about what I would want to say about this album for the rest of my life and I'll still end up regurgitating the same old shit everyone else on the planet says. It's great, poppy rock music for the masses. It's vulnerable in it's lyrics and the songs range from punky rants to pretty ballads. It changed the landscape of music forever and most bands in the rock, metal and pop scenes have been influenced by it in one way or another. That's it. End of story. RIP Kurt. Fav Song: On a Plain Least Fav Song: Smells Like Teen Spirit (Overplayed)

I still love this album. Solid straight through. And there's no denying its influence in pushing grunge into mainstream popularity.

ist halt einfach ne 5/5 fav track Lithium

Was soll man sagen Top: Drain You

The sound of high school. No notes.

Один з найулюбленіших альбомів, класика для мене.

This was a staple of my influence on music and was always on during BBQs, Long drives with my dad and my work playlist. This is an album though that is overplayed and Smells like Teen Spirit becomes boring after a while, but with tracks like “Stay Away”, “Breed” and “Territorial Pissing” this album has teeth that cement it as a staple Grunge record.

Fantastic. No bad songs. A lot of great ones.

Is this the best rock album of all time? I think the answer is yes but maybe thats because it was my generation. Ive heard this album 1000 times and love it. What stands out on this listen was the drums slap hard. The guitar sound, the light and shade and Kurts voice are all spectacular as always.

It had been a while since I'd listened to this album in its entirety (even though I bought the CD 20-30 years ago), so I wasn't sure if it was a 4 or 5. It was nice to find that it never really dragged between all the singles that I've heard a million times. Great album, and a fairly easy 5. I never worshiped Cobain the way that some Nirvana fans do, but this album is undeniably a banger.

A top 25 album for me. Top 3 tracks: Endless, Nameless Stay away Breed

Just a phenomenal album without a single bad song. A distorted grungy sound that utilizes some loud-quiet-loud dynamics, punky energy and chaos, quality songwriting, peculiar lyrics, and insanely catchy melodies. The production is crisp, so you get precision in the noisiness. The gruffness of Cobains voice is crystal clear. It’s all messy and loose while also professional and accessible. Widely appealing but not compromising. Raw but polished. And the result was excellent and probably the biggest alternative album of all time.

I'd say this album has almost become bigger than the sum.of all it's parts. The cultural impact of this album, Nirvana and Kurt are all encompassing of the early 90s. Were they the first to play this sound, absolutely not, but if you were to ask people who the biggest impact of rock in the early 90s was you would absolutely have Nirvana in the conversation. Great album and I could listen to it over and over.

A classic. It's heavy, angsty, energetic, screamy and noisy; somehow thanks to Kurt's undeniable vocal presence and razor sharp production these things make for an intensely palatable album. And between all these things, there's a poetry that I really can't put into words, but I get it.

It took me a long time to come around on Nirvana. Outside of the catchy singles like Teen Spirit and Come as you are, I thought it was all just noise and angst. But I was wrong. Coming back to Nevermind after so many years there’s just so much to admire in the composition of these songs. Even tracks like Territorial Pissings have really grown on me. As a package this album is utterly excellent. Maybe a track or two shy of being faultless. But this album will forever have a permanent place in my rotation. Five grungy stars for Nevermind 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

Ну пахнет как молодой дух и вообще

This is #day266 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... here we are now, entertain us! What more is there to say about Nevermind that hasn't already been said? It's the epitome of '90s alternative rock. Maybe the trick is to keep acknowledging this record's revolutionary nature and impact? Nearly 35 years after its release, it still rips hard. It's not my favorite grunge album, though (that title belongs to Alice In Chains' Dirt), and I'm not even sure it's my favorite Nirvana album (In Utero got a 5 from me a couple of months ago, and I think it's their magnum opus). But rating Nevermind lower than a 4 or 5 feels criminal. Aside from "Teen Spirit," it's got some of my all-time favorites of theirs, like "Come As You Are" and "Something In The Way." This is a 5 out of 5. Looking forward to #day267.

Fuck Yeah

God is gay

4/29/2025: Bangers

I mean, what can I say about this album that hasn’t already been said? It’s an absolute masterpiece and genre definer. No notes

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH (sorry for that just pretend that i am quoting the lyrics for the chorus of Lithium, where kurt just goes YEAHHHHHH and bipolar'd all over the place) Well, here we are now, so Entertain Us. i simply remember the fact that the first riff on the album is also the first riff i ever riffed on my telecaster (0-3-5 not included cause i first learned it on acoustic guitar) and as Kurt drags his voice through the verse and shouted through the chorus of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" i cant help notice my urge to smash the tele, wasting 300 bucks or so and change it to a jazzmaster (although kurt plays a jaguar but aren't these two guitars almost the same?). And we float through the music, Kurt's voice and lyrics, talking bout imaginary friends and bipolar disorder and disinterest in things and many guns, become a butter knife screaming my teenage angst over the flat plastic disc spinning in the cd player like butter on a toast, and nobody even know what emotion that it is going to inflict cause it inflicts every feeling only existent in teenagers and its just like this, like what its ever was, the punk power chords and the aggressive drumming and until every thing is inaudible that happens since 1991 and continues on as it ever was, influcing people decades to come and if you literally want to ask why jaguars and jazzmasters and mustangs are so fucking expensive to the degree a nirvana-loving high school student failed to buy one using her own accumulated pocket money you can just blame it on Kurt. But this is also a good thing as well since there's finally something that talks about what we want directly instead of these fucking hair metal bands making power ballads cause we are all tired to these things, isnt it? underrepresentation is the worst thing that ever happened. and This, is somehow the non-deodorant teenage spirit. Thanks to MTV, Thanks to Kurt, Krist and Dave, we can happily enjoy all these better music coming from 1990s. 5/5

One of the few albums on this list that I feel comfortable giving a 5/5.

Mótandi rokkplata fyrir lítinn grungekrakka. Ekki einn veikur hlekkur. Rólegu lögin jafn öflug og þau æstu.

Algjört meistaraverk. Ekki eitt leiðinlegt lag.

First 3 songs on this are some of the best starts to an album out there, hard 5 right in the dick.

Once you ascend, there are no degrees of rock and roll. You either are. Or you're dead. Can you rock any harder than Nevermind? Hell no. Instant head bangers. Instant vocal blowout. Get up. Go harder. Air band rockstar. Do NOT apologize. Go to town. Just to blow it off. Actually, nevermind.

Based on my new rating system and considering the albums that are being presented, this is a 5. Is it perfect no, but it’s a legendary album. Also, listened to the Devonshire mix, didn’t notice a huge difference. Though the drums are given a boost in the later mix, and definitely sounds bigger, brighter and more polished. I prefer the later mix, despite what Cobain thought.

I wish I could add anything insightful to this perfect album but….nevermind

Pretty good, classic album

Great album, a classic - which feels weird having played it a lot when it came out originally.

10/10. One of the greatest grunge albums of all time! :)

This is just my jam . I have loved nirvana for like 3 years and this will always be one of my favourite albums . Only song I don’t like is endless , nameless But apart from that song all banger after banger after banger . My vibe. The basslines are just sick . Kurt Cobain emp .

was so gassed to see this was the album today, you all know me, you should all know i had the biggest nirvana phase. favourite is endless nameless which i guess will be dan and charlies least favourite. stay away and smells like teen spirit are probably my least favourites. but they are still brilliant songs. 5/5 album.

I mean, it’s Nevermind. It’s hard now to remember how different this was and how it sparked the change that happened in music and the culture in 91/92. It’s an easy 5, I wish I could give it a 6.. one of the greatest albums of all time.

Great album.

This album came out my freshman year of college. The underground music scene had been bubbling up to the surface for several years earlier with bands like Jane's Addiction, Pixies, The Cure, etc. But Nirvana kicked the whole damn door down and paved the way for the alternative music wave that swept the world in the 90s. People like to piss on Nirvana's music and legacy a lot these days it seems. But this album was huge and Nirvana was very important. Still is. 4.5/5 Album 41/1001

Classic really good loved every song personal fave was something in the way

I was 15 when this came out. Gamechanger. I bought because of the review in Thrasher magazine, even before Smells Like Teen Spirit blew up. The normies and the metalheads all agreed this was a great album. Still sounds fresh. Favorite song: Breed

I mean... Het is nevermind van nirvana moet ik meer zeggen. 5/5.

classic album, classic cover. easy 5 stars

Vbb, posso anche non ascoltarlo. Direi solo: Tututu tuturututu tutruurut turur. P.S. ma solo io noto un'estrema somiglia tra il batterista dei nirvana ed il cantante dei foo fighter?

Nirvana? Never heard of em. Nevermind? Fine, I wont mind. Sometimes I like this one more than In Utero, sometimes it’s the other way around, depends on my mood.

I was definitely glued to MTV at this time, and this was a game changer. On the mainstream, music completely shifted from the previous decade because of this album, and there was an explosion of new bands getting signed and played on the radio trying to ride this wave. So many styles on here, and such a catchy album. It's dirty, sludgy, punk, rock, messy clean, and beautiful. Every song is great. This album is a 5, no question about it.

I listened to this so much, on my Sony Diskman or on my mom's 1970s stereo in our basement, with the 3 ft tall speakers that sat on the floor. I knew every note and word. It was probably the first album I consumed to that extent. I loved the distortion and grungy angst paired with the poppy hooks and melodies. I loved the cryptic lyrics, the emotional undercurrent, and the punk immediacy. I loved Dave's drums and Krist's bass and Kurt's everything. When I listened to it afresh yesterday, my son was around for some of it, and I explained that this was my favorite band and album when I was his age. He seemed surprised and listened to it with a detached interest, wondering aloud why some bands like to scream their songs. It's funny because when I heard it for the first time over 30 years ago, it all just inherently made sense and spoke to me on some deep level. "Yes, yes, yes...Mhmm. Yes." But removed from its original context and presented to my son, it was a strange curiosity. I had to explain to him the concept of hidden tracks and how they could surprise an unprepared listener, and then together we listened to the final track, the very song this group album-listening project is named for. Still a time machine to my childhood, but now I can share the ride.

When a band's song can make you remember where you were the first time you heard it, that should really tell you that something is special about it. I was sitting in my bedroom listening to the radio around the age of 10 or 11, toggling between classic 50s and 60s oldies and alternative rock when Smells Like Teen Spirit came on. To be honest, I really did not know how to take it. I felt like I really hadn't heard anything like it, and it stuck with me. So melodic, aggressive and raw but with an almost danceable drumbeat (Dave later admitted to borrowing from the gap band on this album). A few short years later Nirvana would become one of my top bands of that era and I would dive deep into their catalogue to help me learn how to play bass guitar. Sitting in my room for hours playing. Every song on this album hits hard and brings back memories. This album is also responsible for destroying cock rock and establishing the anti rock star.

One of the greats, hence the high rating. But, to be honest, while I really liked it when I was younger, it doesn't hit the way it used to.

Cock block rock

Super classic, no comments

I like BLEACH better, but this is still a flat-out masterpiece and after Oasis as good as Rock N Roll got in the 1990s.

Nostalgia.

Do danas nisam nikad odslušala cijeli Nevermind. Da, ja sam sramota za ljudski rod. Danas nakon što sam ga odslušala mogu reći da se ovo ne smije propustiti. Lično smatram da ima i boljih grunge albuma ali ovo je više nego legendarno.

BANGER

The grungy sound of Nirvana is just so unique and revolutionary in its kind. The vocals can be screeching but also soft and melodic, same with the guitar. Although that kind of range within an album isn’t necessarily new, it’s still impressive and done in a powerful way. The lyrics can be confusing but it’s fascinating of course knowing Cobains backstory and trying to decipher what was going through his mind. This album rocks

Already got this one.

Why do I have to listen to stupid nirvana

5.5 - Legendary

Like this a lot more than the last Nirvana offering. Still not personally my thing, but hard to find fault with this one.

Hitters from beginning to end. Nothing else to add that hasn't been said already

TWO Kurt Cobain albums in one week?!? ;-) Every time I listen to this album I am amazed by how SLOW it is - I've gotten used to the live versions of all these songs and they played them MUCH faster live. "In Bloom" almost sounds like a parody of itself. It's simultaneously cool and depressing that "Something In the Way" now reminds me of a Batman movie.

come on, it's nevermind, there's nothing else to say

I guess I always wrote this off, as I often do with things that seem *too* lauded. But wow. On every level this is a magnificent piece of work.

I came to this album late, a few years after it was released. In some ways I didn't really know Nirvana until after Kobain had passed away. This album is awesome and timeless.

New genre. Return to ACTUAL rock and roll. Simply fantastic after all these years. Glad Grohl held the torch.

If 6 stars was an option!

Class.

An infamous album cover photograph, but great music. Opening track "Smells Like Teen Spirit" has often been covered and even parodied, but nothing quite beats the original.

opener (“smells like teen spirit”) is a classic. overall, this album is a classic. didn’t disappoint (as per usual for nirvana). i was surprised that the closer (“endless, nameless”) was starting to edge near heavy rock/metal (but i liked it). this is one of those albums/artists where i can understand why they’re popular. love grunge alternative rock! 5/5.

I still remember the first time I heard the opening riffs of Smells Like Teen Spirit. I was walking through my living room and MTV was on- they still played music at that time. I just froze and stared at the tv watching the video in awe. The first thought that went through my head was that the hair bands are dead. The fact that I loved Rock and Roll but hated hair bands made it even better. The CD was in my possession within the hour. I still love this album

Don't give me no revisionist hipster takes. This is a big deal.

One of the best albums of all time. Those first 3 tracks are ridiculously good and the album remains consistently amazing.

A legendary album.

Peak Fav song: In Bloom

Starts off with three incredible songs, and while the rest of the album can't quite compare with the start, more hits are sprinkled in. Out of 13 songs in the album, 5 are phenomenal and 8 are still pretty good.

no notes needed. 😊

Bangerzzz

The grunge album. Starts off really strong, back half not quite as good but still high marks. Liked the instrumentation, all got a chance to shine.

10/10 this album rules

Cult Classic

Classic

Some great grunge right here. There is a reaspn Nirvana was so influential. The album is flawless and has many layers to it. Love it.

This was the perfect album for today! 10/10 🌟

Albums that I am emotionally connected to are harder to judge. As a teen, I would say this is the greased album of all time. Now, I still think it is amazing, but unsure how much is it to that connection I had decades ago. I am going to give it 5 stars, but it is a hesitant rating.

love this albun

❤️

YEAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

A world without Nevermind is a world I care not to live in.

One of my favourite records of all time, truly iconic in its sound and defines an era of music. Whilst people will often deride it for being too commercial, and claim they prefer In Utero, you cannot deny that this album is all killer, and no filler! An accidental classic that broke the mould!

Absolute Banger.

Idk if I enjoyed the vibes of the album as a whole but there are so many good songs. Maybe listening to the MTV unplugged album before this made me enjoy some of the songs more.

I have a nevermind coaster! I think I liked in utero a bit better but this album is great, duh. I listen to smells like teen spirit a lot I love that song, which I guess im not special since it has literally billions of streams.

Just straight up one of the greatest albums ever made. My face actually lit up when I saw we got this album

ну камон если б я не 5 поставил меня бы не убили?

This is another album on which I'm contemplating what more I can contribute to the larger conversation. Just to make sure, I did listen to Nevermind in full again today to determine if any song on here has aged poorly or no longer resonated with me. As it turned out, that was not the case; every track on this album was still as good as when I first heard them. Even the hidden track "Endless, Nameless" was enjoyable in its raw, distorted delivery, and my mileage varies on hidden tracks. It's weird because I didn't exactly grow up with Nirvana. I was born a year after Kurt Cobain tragically took his own life. Rather, as time went on and I got into more rock music, Nirvana seemed to creep its way into my life through what I enjoyed. Whether it was song inclusions on various music video game soundtracks like "In Bloom" on Rock Band and "Breed" on Guitar Hero: On Tour, soundtrack use in movies such as "Something in the Way" used a recurring motif for The Batman, listening to the likes of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Come As You Are" on FM radio, or the multiple artists that have covered them since such as Post Malone and St. Vincent, the legacy of this short-lived group has lived on in the cultural zeitgeist. After all, this was an album that helped usher in the sound of the 1990s, and the lyrics and style of that era have continued to resonate in the modern world. I don't expect everyone to enjoy this album. Hell, there's a good chance you heard enough of this album already to know where you stand on it. For me, it was simply nice to revisit Nevermind and appreciate it.

One of the all time greats, a mythical record. It’s not an album I choose to listen to often, but when I’m in the right mood it’s a perfect listen front to back. It always sounds incredible. It has a long list of hits: SLTS, In Bloom, Come As You Are, Lithium, On A Plane, Something In The Way… it’s ridiculous. It’s obviously one of the most influential albums of the last 50 years. I can’t add much that hasn’t already been said, but Kurt’s vocals are particularly great throughout the album.

Similar to what I said in my Master of Puppets review, I'm surprised that something this hardcore (at times inaccessible?) ever became a huge mainstream hit. Of course, the biggest hits are mostly the tamest, but something like Endless, Nameless is so radical and goes against my perceptions of what popular music is. I've always shied away from this album thinking that it was overrated compared to In Utero, but no, it really is just that great.

Not even sorry this really does rule.

Awesome album all killer no filler

Hit after hit, plus nostalgia in my lifetime

Exceptional album. Start of a new generation of music.

Classic album, all the singles are incredibly timeless, the other tracks tend to be more raw and aggressive which works perfectly where they are placed in the album. The performances across the album are great and the songwriting is super solid. Not my favourite Nirvana album, but hard to deny the quality and impact this album has had. Easy 5/5.

Hard to be subjective on this one. This album was the soundtrack of my youth. Came out when I was in 8th grade. They are still my favorite grunge band although Mudhoney is right up there too. I still love the raw energy of Bleach but the songs are just better on this album. A bit more mature and better produced. Five star every day.

This album absolutely fucken rips

This album changed music for decades. We need another Nirvana because popular music has gotten stale again.

Oh yeah baby

More familiar with this album. Better than I remembered. Full of bangers except the last song.

An album I hadn't listened to since I was a teenager. I've sometimes been tempted to call Nirvana overhyped, but relistening to Nevermind now all these years later reconfirms what a timeless album it is. It literally hasn't lost any of its raw energy or edge. Along with Metallica's Black Album, it's a fitting end of history rock album.

Ground breaking

ok yeah i love this album and there's no way i can be impartial about it at this point. the songs are unique, powerful, uncomfortable, brilliant, and iconic. easy 5. rip kurt and apologies to courtney for how she was treated after losing her husband at such a young age. also check out the latest news on spencer elden, the baby from the cover. he's alive, well, and extremely litigious. favorites: everything, though stay away and endless nameless are the weakest tracks in my eyes.

5 - Entertaining, highly nuanced, and delves deep into many different styles of the genre, all while doing them better than anyone else. It’s pretty easy to see how this has remained such a classic for so long

never gets old. genre defining album, not one bad song.

Yup - still great after 30+ years. Played this in the car with my daughter singing along. Life is good. 5*

One of my favorite bands and an all time great album.

Tired but a classic

Prologue, I was obsessed with Nirvana in high school. I thought Kurt Cobain was the greatest songwriter of all time. I had regular internal debates about whether Nevermind or In Utero was their best album. I watched the documentaries available, read the books, bought every scrap of available recorded music. And then I got super over it. I haven't listened through this album in probably 20 years. So, Nevermind with fresh ears. Out the gate, SLTS is a raw, rawkus punk rock anthem. There's no wonder this took the world by storm. Honestly, no bad track on this album. Everything is so hard, so raw, so angsty, so anti corporate. Which is crazy that it has become what it is. I often wonder what Kurt would think of it all now if he was still around. I imagine he'd be pissed that Wal Mart sells branded Nirvana shirts to kids who think it's a clothing company. But maybe he'd have grown up to and would just laugh at the absurdity. This doesn't hold the same place for me it once did. But it's still undeniable. Anyways, 10/10, all-time classic.

Not a bad song in the bunch, and at least half of which are era-defining anthems. “Teen Spirit” really is a badass song after not hearing it for awhile. Favorites: “Drain You”, “Stay Away” Longstanding nitpick: it’s always brought my piss to a boil how “Breed”, “Territorial Pissings”, and “Stay Away” all have the same drum intro.

What can I say, it's a classic for a reason

Beyond just the cultural impact, this album slaps from front to back (maybe less the final track). Total classic.

This album is fantastic.

All timer

Perfect, very important record.

Aged really well. Kurt still sounds as fresh as he ever did. An angry lost songwriter with a bone to pick with the universe

It’s an album that saved the very idea of the rock genre. You cannot tell the story of music in the 20th century without this masterpiece. This was the turn rock so desperately needed to stay relevant. Such cool music, such cool themes, this one hits on all cylinders for me.

Heard it a million times. I was flabbergasted when this first dropped back in 1991. Life changing, altered music for the masses!

What to say about this album, it was widely regarded as one of the best albums of all time but also the album that started grunge! It has so many good songs that it is amazing! Classic album everyone should listen to once before they die!

Oh boy, here we go Everything that could be said about this album has already been said a million time so instead I'm gonna rank every song on this album from best to weakest. Every song on this is pretty classic which makes it a difficult list to rank, but I've listened to this album enough times so I'm pretty confident in my ranking. 1. Come As You Are 2. Lithium 3. Something In The Way 4. Territorial Pissings 5. On A Plain 6. Lounge Act 7. Drain You 8. Polly 9. Smells Like Teen Spirit 10. Breed 11. In Bloom 12. Stay Away 13. Endless, Nameless 4.5/5

Classic

Incredible

Perfect and iconic. A true game changer of an album.

This is a fantastic album. Itwas the album that brought 'grunge' into the public consciousness. It's a shame as with the singles still being played on heavy rotation on many radio stations, it has lost that sparkle. Some songs I just can't listen to anymore because of this. If Nirvana had stayed esoteric, then I think I'd play it more. But it is full of bangers

Great album, one of the best.

Ha! What to say. Masterpiece that changed everything. Smells like, Sthg in the Way, On a Plain.. Polly .. can I give them 2 5s

I LOVE this album. It dropped during my last year in high school, and I can't think of a better anthem for a teenager than Smells Like Teen Spirit. I was all babydoll dresses, flannels, and combat boots. It is one of the few albums I still listen to in heavy rotation from start to finish. The rawness is unmatchable.

Geht einfach dumm

doch mehr skips als ich dachte. aber still insane melodien

An absolute classic.

Så banbrytande, och den känns inte daterad nu mer än 30 år senare. Femma!

Oh well, whatever, nevermind.

Of course it’s a classic

Great album

Goes without saying...

Nevermind is still awesome all those years later

Loved it for years

Listen to this dark, dark album to fortify an appreciation of the Light. The experience will, perhaps counterintuitively, make you grateful. Like Jonah in the belly of the fish (Jonah chapter 2).

One of my favourite albums! Here they took the quiet/loud dynamics to new heights. The perfect mix of crunch and pop sensibility.

I mean, my god. Is there a more seminal, quintessential album that has ever been released. We start off with "Smells Like Teen Spirit" which instantly grabs you and sets the tone for the album. While I am personally sad that the best song on the album (arguably) is first and it's all downhill from here, I do standby their decision to kick the album off with it. We continue on into arguably the 2nd best banger on this album "In Bloom" which rocks me to my core every time I hear it. I mean I heard that Kurt Cobain thought all his music was bullshit and I feel like you really get that from this song. It is still epic and I appreciate it. The simple lyrics in all of these songs have a way of really conveying an overall feeling and a vibe with so little. Like you understand when you hear these songs that it was a revolutionary album. I spoke once to someone that was in high school during this time (I was 2) and they talked about how grunge was treated afterwards where it was essentially no longer to listen to because it was so mainstream. Then we get to "Come As You Are" I mean, MY GOD, THE BASSLINE. it's just so phenomenal and haunting. Just so haunting. I just really grove with everything on this album, the instruments and music choices, the lyrics, the overall vibe. It's just so fucking EMO. Breed and Pollys are both throwaways for me. Immediately bring the album down. I then literally space out until "Something In the Way" no matter how many times I try to pay attention to the passage of "Territorial Pissings" - "On A Plain" Lithium, again is just so untouchable. For the reasons I've previously listed and for what this album did to music as a whole, the industry, etc. I will be ranking it 5/5 although 1/2 of the album is throwaway. That's how redeeming these songs are.

One of the best modern rock albums ever made

It’s easy to take for granted how good Nevermind really is. I’ve heard these songs so many times it’s like they are a universal truth, just another constant in my life, as permanent as my family. Not only did Nevermind bring grunge to the masses and systematically plunged the final nail in the coffin of the 80s, it gave us an album of truly, undeniably great songs. Now, while this album sparked the creation of maybe the worst genre of the past 50 years (post-grunge), and a slew of Kurt Cobain copy cats, I can’t hold that against them too much. 4.6 / 5

Loved it then, love it now.

Classic!

Hells YES!!!!

9/10 Highlights: In Bloom Polly Drain You Something In The Way

In Bloom erachteraan (echte grunge-kraker) en dan Come as You Are. 9/10 Highlights In Bloom Polly Stay Away Something in the Way

I think this is a beyond fantastic grunge album, a top album of all time, and certainly a must listen -- I am probably in the majority here, so likely no surprising statements here. But what I will add to that is that the first six tracks of this album all stand as iconic examples of the grunge genre and pieces of music in general. Nirvana could have released JUST those songs, called it there, and had a 5 star worthy album on their hands. If I am being nitpicky, I do think the album lulls a bit after those first six tracks, but of course things are going to pale in comparison. They are still decidedly great tracks, and they help create an amazing album experience, but it's just really hard to beat the first half of the album. That said, "Something in the Way" is a fantastic, haunting album closer (unless you count "Endless, Nameless", the hidden track, as the album closer, which I don't). I'd probably rank this album a 4.5, but again, that first half really wins the day for me and easily makes this a 5 star album in my mind.

~4.5. Reminds me of when my dad brought his cd on a road trip and we listened to this album.

Excellent. A classic.

No dud songs - therefore must be full marks! Just the right balance between commercial sounding and raucous

1st time listener! Would have bet my house this was Albini produced but apparantly not.. Not my genre but obviously extremely strong, with a Behemoth side 1 Was also a huge cultural juggernaut..think I went back to Uni for my 2nd year about a week or two after this, or at least Teen Spirit had been released, and it felt like a different World, and not one I entirely recognized...

It took me years to appreciate this album as I was very anti-grunge during its height of popularity. A solid 5 from me even if on a plain and smells like teen spirit are basically the same song dressed in different clothes.

Man I really love this album. Luckily my dad liked cool music in the 90s so I remember liking this album when I was super young. It hasn't ever gotten old. I really don't know if I need to say anything about it.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. I know every song by heart. No skips. I love how they kind of set out to make this hardcore album, but instead created a new genre. Its heavy, its overly distorted, but its surprisingly really melodic and sing songy. Even the heaviest songs. I love how the lyrics are a good mix of obscure, self deprecating and self reflective. Despite having a song called "Smells Like Teen Spirit," it never feels "teeny boppy" or immature. It feels like something written about teenagers, but not necessarily for teenagers. But its something that teenagers can obviously get behind. I was truly obsessed with this record as a teenager, and when I listen to it now, I still enjoy it. I love how the bass lines kind of roll in and out and drive the music forward. (something that was kind of lost in latter punk music.) I love how I sing along to most songs. I really don't know what else to say other than, I'm just really grateful I've had this album in my life.

This album is as good as it is iconic. Every song is angsty and perfectly encapsulates the mood they were trying to get across.

i feel as though i have to give this album a 5 solely based on it's incredible influence on rock music and music in general. outside of that, it's also perfect, or nearly perfect based on its musical merits alone.

i mean, its nirvana, i grew up on their music, especially on this album, it just cant be imperfect

Classic

Confession time: I was never really a huge Nirvana fan. I was more of a Pearl Jam guy. It’s hard not to mention Nirvana for the massive cultural influence that they had on the early 1990s. As thrash metal was becoming more pop and pop and alternative bands were ruling the airways Nirvana had that 1970s punk edge with a better sound and more reflective lyrics. Playing in a punk band during the time we attempted to emulate a lot of what Nirvana had started. There are some great tracks on this such as Lithium, Polly, Territorial Pissing, and Bloom, Come As You Are, and best of all Teen Spirit. I can say I really enjoyed On a Plain this time too. And Something in the Way. For me this album is four but as soon as I start talking about it, I find myself giving reference to all the songs that I thought were OK at the time, but all those OK songs added up. A five it is!

Random thoughts: * This was one of the first two CDs I ever purchased. * In addition to Nirvana, I bought Sir Mix-a-lot's Baby Got Back album. I contain multitudes. * So many great songs and just a great album to play straight through. * Polly was always one of my favorite tracks. If the lyrics were different it could have been a Beatles song. Just a beautiful melody. * "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or "Lithium" were my favorite tracks in 90s but I think "In Bloom" is my favorite track currently. * When your favorite song from an album changes over time, that is probably a sign it is a classic album that just keeps revealing more to you listen after listen.

The first time I heard this album was when my older cousin loaned me three CDs that changed my life: Nevermind, Blood Sugar Sex Magick, and Violent Femmes. I was in seventh grade and my music collection included C+C Music Factory, Amy Grant, Def Leppard, and a cassette single from DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. This "alternative" music completely caught me off guard. I had heard about Pearl Jam from kids at school but never actually got my hands on anything like it. I listen to Nirvana a lot still even 30 years later. Nevermind is probably the album I listen to the least and I don't think I have ever listened to it as closely as I did this morning. Today it really hit me how poppy these songs are. Kurt putting bands like ABBA and the Bay City Rollers on his list of influences wasn't ironic. The performances and production is loud and punk but the songs retain quite a bit of sing-along, toe-tapping energy.

Simple and genius songwriting, awesome drums. Love every song from this record

Ik snap helemaal waarom dit zo’n grote hit was. Ik heb nog steeds moeite met grunch, maar dit is gewoon geweldig

I have loved this album for ages and will forever love it. Endless nameless

Phwoar. No notes.

Niewiele jest bardziej kultowych płyt od tej. Gniewna. Szczera. Odważna. I jakaś taka na maksa prawdziwa. Kocham. 10/10

Stomping

For me this is the album put Nirvana on the map. It amazes me when an album, after all the other music in the world has been heard, something so original bursts on the scene. And burned bright and fortunately lit others to carry on.

I don’t think it’s exaggerating to say that this is one of the great albums. It’s like “Love Supreme” with fuzz and yelling; it’s like “Songs in the Key of Life” with punk drumming and long hair; it’s like “Blue” with bad attitude and dirty fingernails (I’d imagine Kurt had messy cuticles); it’s like “Revolver”…yeah, it’s like “Revolver”. Burnout > fade away…

A perfect album. Sonically so rich and full. A young band hungry and arguably at their peak. Very few albums have had such an immediate impact so that time can be split into before Nevermind and after Nevermind. This album plays like a greatest hits and it was only their second album! This was part of my musical awakening- hearing smells like teen spirit made me want to pick up a guitar and rebel.

One of the best albums of all time. Great songs and memories!

Rating: 10/10 One of the greatest albums of all time. Absolutely infectious energy with incredible guitar riffs, punchy bass lines, passionate drumming, and one-of-a-kind songwriting.

No notes.

Gorgeous from the get-go. Completely new when it was released and holds up years later.

A masterpiece.

I mean its an absolute classic. No filler

4.9 I've longed rinsed this album dry, don't think I've listened to it solidly for almost two decades now, but still, wow. One listen and I'm transported back to the first time I heard this, on my CD Walkman whilst sorting out stuff in the loft. The first six tracks are all absolute 5* bangers. One of the best first half's of any album ever. Drain You is the only track I'm not massively keen on (aside from the outro, but to me that's not a real track - it sat on the end of a half hour of silence on the CD version, so never popped up unless you fell asleep with it on). But the rest - all 5* through and through. One of the best albums ever. End of.

Really enjoyed the album. Forgot how much it was a combination between pop and punk.

Yep, that still rocks.

i bet the baby who grew up and sued Nirvana for the cover pic is super mad that this album made the list lol

YEEEEEESSSSSS

I love this album so much and I love Nirvana. I don’t care if it’s a normie take but I ride for nevermind. It’s perfect

Hard to deny the impact of this record. Listening to it all the way through, it’s one of those albums that sounds like it could be a greatest hits comp. I definitely heard a lot of the Pixies influence in it, but also detected some other less obvious influences as well.

Haven’t listened closely in a very long time. If a song from it comes on the radio or Spotify I tend to skip immediately without thinking about it. It’s just so ingrained that I didn’t feel anything towards it anymore. This site pushed me to look closer at it again. It’s really perfect. There’s a reason why it’s so hyped and why it’s considered to have changed music. One of those things in art where just everything about it comes in sync. Perfect blend of art meeting pop.

Possibly the best album of the 90s opens with possibly the best and most recognisable single of the 90s. A teenage anthem for the annals of time. Shredding guitar, catchy riff, big fat drums and ripping vocals make it such a giant hit. Similar greatness flows through the album, In Bloom, Lithium and Drain You are such pop bangers overlayed with joyous overdrive and delicious harmonies between Kurt and Dave. I heard Kurt tried to out-do The Beatles’ ‘yeah yeahs’ with Lithium, and then later REM tried to out-do Nirvana’s ‘yeah yeahs’ with ‘Man On The Moon'. The lyrics are all very vivid, humourous and bleak, my favourite being ‘just because you're paranoid, don't mean they're not after you’. Come As You Are is a stand out, a hard to put your finger on, slower paced, miserable melody. The drums and urgency of Breed, Territorial Pissings and Stay Away, make them headbanging, hair thrashing moshpit anthems. Polly is basically little more than a demo, but it's nonetheless part of the fabric of the album. Lounge Act is a bit different to the other styles on the album. It's my favourite song on the album and I'm not sure why. I think if it had a twin on In Utero it would be Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle, which is my favourite on that album. I think I love these songs because they're neither pop nor discorded noise, they live in between, and the words seem like train of consciousness, jotted down rants. Annoyed how the recent Batman film used Something In The Way, it's not for Bruce Wayne it's for moody, isolated, journal writing, locked away in their bedroom, teenagers…ok maybe it is for Bruce Wayne. Endless, Nameless? Yeah why not chuck it on. I think on Classic Albums they explained how all of these songs have the qualities of Beatles songs in structure, melody, harmonies etc. that are played with loads of grungy distortion/gain/overdrive. I think that's what sets Nirvana and especially this album, aside from their contemporaries around the Sub Pop and Grunge scene.

Probably one of the best 10 seconds at the beginning of an album, ever. This album was HUGE when it came out and the sound was pivotal for that time. I've probably listened to it 1001 times. Lounge Act is a perfect little rock song, it was nice of them to put Endless, Nameless at the end so that you don't have to listen to it!

The start of this album is incredible really. It is hard to comprehend an opening 3 tracks like that. The rest of the album needs some respect too. Absolute 5/5

banger

Smells Like Teen Spirit In Bloom Come As You Are Breed Lithium Polly Territorial Pissings Drain You On a Plain Something in the Way

i mean cmon

Hard to separate the myth from the music, but it's still a classic.

I tend to approach albums I know and love with more scepticism than those I'm not familiar with; is it really that good when viewed objectively in comparison to great albums? Often that results in me listening to my head over my heart and reluctantly giving it a 4 star rating, and I thought this would be the case here. However, Nevermind still holds up for me. Sure it's front loaded, but what a front half that is! The second "side" doesn't have the same hits/hooks but it's still aggressive, lean and always engaging. It's the best grunge album in my opinion, and the iconic cover art tips it over the edge of there was any doubt it's a 5/5 album.

Smells like nostalgia. Smells like teen spirit, come as you are, in bloom, on a plain, something in the way, all great. There's a better version of Polly somewhere. A couple weird screaming ones, including the interminable endless, nameless

Are Nirvana a bit overrated? Maybe. But this album is really a perfect rock album

One of my favorite albums of all time. I listen to it a few times a year. Classic 90s grunge. Love hearing Kurt's voice again. Gone way before his time.

5 star rating. Not a bad song on the album. Tunes like Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Lithium, Come As You Are, make up for any rare moments of weakness. Drain You is strongest non-single on the legendary album.

Omgomgomg LOVEEE 10/10 but seriously now, this album is for the perfect mix between louder and softer songs. I actually love all songs on this album lol, even endless nameless. Ironically it was one of the first songs I listened to from this album, which was back around November 2023, if I remember correctly. Smells like teen spirit and come as you are were the first two songs I heard, after that I think something on tiktok made me think that it was a good idea to get into nirvana, and that's where my nirvana obsession began. Quickly enough, all three studio albums were sitting in my playlist, waiting to be listened to. (Right now a total of 109 liked songs and still counting!) Throughout the past year, I have developed my music taste more and more, with nirvana being my top artist.

Love this album. Awesome talents. Haters are gonna hate.

songwriting gods. the more you discover every single song and how perfect they all are, the more you just replay and replay

Nevermind is the gift that keeps on giving, as Mr Babypenis on the cover consistently attempts litigation based on dreams and fancy, which serves only to recruit more people to the "Have Seen This Dudes Dick" Club. Its enough to make Kurt grin in his rest.

Classic, one of my fave albums of all time

The album of my generation that made it feel like something was actually happening in our time.

Absolutely overplayed classic…

My younger self would get quite moody if I didn't award five stars

It is impossible to deny the influence of this album not only on the grunge scene but on rock in general. Here Kurt Cobain pours out in words everything he felt: the pain, the loves, the misfortunes and the insecurities of himself as a young man. His songs echo through eternity although they are too heavy to listen to when you are happy. Kurt delivered everything that was needed to make history: pure talent.

God Tier album

Makes me wanna dance awkwardly, still. This album always made me felt anxious and careless at the same time.

Maybe not their best but it will be always special for me. Nevertheless it is a pretty good album.

Excelent

Listened Before? Y An absolute classic, changed music forever. Not much else to say and definitely nothing that hasn't been said before. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Smells Like Teen Spirit

It’s impossible to listen to Nevermind in a vacuum anymore. That’s made harder by the opening trifecta of grunge perfection, three songs that transcend not only Nirvana, but the genre as a whole. As I’ve said before, by the time I was introduced to Nirvana in the early 2000s, a year or two out from the emo explosion of the aughts, they were already seen as a classic rock band, and like all other classic rock bands, most of my exposure to them was through their Greatest Hits album. But after a year or two of classic rock, my friends’ cool goth older sisters were listening to My Chem and Evanescence, and so, as a young, envious, impressionable closeted trans girl who wanted to be like these young women so very badly, I traded in my classic rock for Fall Out Boy and Warped Tour. And in the process, I gave up Nirvana before getting to listen to an official release front-to-back. I say all this to say that I have very little nostalgia for Nirvana; Nevermind didn’t change my life. Sure, I eventually got around to Nevermind, but I did it with the same energy of someone listening to Sgt. Peppers. As I’ve learned from the other Nirvana albums I’ve listened to for the first time because of this list, I’m not necessarily the biggest fan of the band beyond their greatest hits. Thankfully, Nevermind might as well be a greatest hits record. Again, the opening 3 songs are a tour de force, sure, but so is “Lithium,” perfecting the quiet-loud dynamic of a Pixies song, and “Polly,” a Gen X McCartney-penned Beatles song, and “Drain You,” a deep cut that could easily win the argument for best grunge song against any other song by any other grunge band, and of course, the gut-punch of “Something In The Way.” Of course, Cobain’s vocal delivery, lyrics, songwriting dynamics, and melodic yet still engaging solos are the star of the show, but Grohl’s god-tier drum technique and Novoselic’s tight-end tone make this a stunning listen, only underlined by the fascinatingly clean production of Butch Vig, who somehow retains the band’s grit without losing clarity or definition. This is one of those records where even the most edgy punk tracks are pop perfection, whether we’re talking about the fuzzed-out and dirty-in-more-ways-than-one “Breed,” or how “Territorial Pissings” sounds like it could legitimately fit into a basement show set, or the farm-town Seattle-ness of “Stay Away” and “On a Plain,” or, of course, the literal piss-take of “Endless, Nameless.” There is not a single bad moment on Nevermind. It is a great record, even today. Maybe the impact it made at the time was over-exaggerated, but I can see how something so powerful yet so clean could sound like a mindfuck to a generation of angsty small-town kids in 1991/1992. And that holds up today. All that makes it a strong contender in the Top 10 Greatest Albums of All Time conversation, at least from a supposedly quasi-objective viewpoint so many of those ranked lists are based on. It might not make my personal Top 10, even if I applied that same objective criteria. But it’s impossible to deny its greatness. Sometimes, that greatness can make an album this renowned feel sterile, and it can be hard to engage with it. Nevermind’s biggest weakness for me is that I’m not emotionally bound to it– I know it’s well made, but by not being there at the time, and also not falling in love with it early in my youth, I miss a lot of the magic, even if I can still acknowledge how great it is– even if I enjoy it front-to-back thoroughly. It feels bland to adore Nevermind. It feels corporate, mainstream, and antithetical to Nevermind to passively enjoy Nevermind. But again, it’s hard to listen to in a vacuum, so the best I’m ever going to get is listening to it with the contextual knowledge that this is one of the most praised albums of all time. And it deserves every ounce of praise it receives, because even if it’s not my favorite album ever, it’s faultless in a way few albums are, unless they’re Greatest Hits compilations. Thankfully, Nevermind is one of the greatest Greatest Hits compilations ever made.

Oh boy- does this album hit hard. My brother had this album growing up, but I dont think I have heard it in its entirety. It was a great listen- Nirvana's sound is so distinguished and intoxicating. Their songs are varied in tome from silly to serious and stylisitically different but sounding cohesive. My only gripe is that it seemed to lose just a little steam toward the end. Overall- I really liked it. Id probably give it a 4.5/5 but I think it can be bumped up to a 5

Perfecto

Allow me to go on a tangent here. I remember believing for many years that the song Cherry Pie by Warrant was an 80’s song. I mean, if you heard it, it’s a fine example of hair metal; loud and usually about wanting to fuck women. It wasn’t until not too long ago that I learned that the song was released in 1990. I mean, I get it. It’s the first year of the decade. You can’t expect change that quickly. But then I thought about some other albums that came before Nevermind. There’s Use Your Illusion by Guns an’ Roses, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge by Van Halen, Waking Up the Neighbors by Bryan Adams (which came out the same day) and even Metallica by… Metallica, who sacrificed some edge for mainstream success. It really makes me wonder: what would have music looked like had Nevermind never reached the audience it did. I’m not going to bore you with the obvious. Everybody knows this is where 90’s music became 90’s music. Rock stopped being about long-haired face-painted men singing about their libido and started delving into darker territories like angst and frustration. Alternative became the mainstream and would pave the way for grunge to be one of the most dominant genres of the decade. I think everyone knows that. I am also not capable of resisting the urge to join in on the acclaim for this album. It is my favorite album? No. Is it my favorite grunge album? No. Is my favorite 90’s album? No. But without it, those probably wouldn’t exist. Would bands like Alice In Chains or Stone Temple Pilots or Soundgarden experience the levels of success they saw without this? Probably not. And to be fair, it is a great album on its own merits. The hits are the hits. Everyone’s heard Smells Like Teen Spirit a million times and stuff like In Bloom and Come As You Are are also as known at this point. What I was surprised was with Breed and Territorial Pissings. I didn’t know Nirvana ever tapped into punk, let alone on Nevermind. And I love the darker tracks in Polly and Something in the Way. It’s shows the depth of the album to me that’s escalates it past the album being “I’m iconic because Smells Like Teen Spirit”. An album’s impact is one thing. Nobody can question the importance of this album and is does indeed fit the category of “must do before you die”. But impact is second to the quality of the album itself. What does impact mean if you don’t like the album? I don’t know if Nevermind ranks in my top 5 of all time. Maybe the middle portion of the album was a bit weaker than the rest of the tracks. But it’s not a deal breaker. This album is too damn important for me to be a contrarian about it. Favorite track: In Bloom Other hits: Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, Lithium, On A Plain, Breed, Polly, Something in the Way

“What is this song all about? Cant figure any lyrics out How do the words to it go? I wish youd tell me, I dont know Dont know, dont know, dont know, oh no Dont know, dont know, dont know... Now Im mumblin and Im screamin And I dont know what Im singin Crank the volume, ears are bleedin I still dont know what Im singin Were so loud and incoherent Boy, this oughta bug your parents Yeah” Ik kan het niet beter samenvatten dan Weird Al.

Heerlijk. Thuiskomen. Genieten. 5 sterren klikken.

It's hard to judge this objectively, since I remember when it came out. Five stars because I remember the impact it had on me.

My wife says Nirvana is my favorite band, and I argue with her every time and tell her that's not true. "Remember when you asked me what my 'one album for a deserted island' was, and I said "Alice in Chains Unplugged?!?" After intentionally listening to this album in its entirety, I might have some apologizing to do to my wife. I haven't listened to this front to back in probably 20 years, and I won't be making that mistake again. This album came out right when I started to find my own musical sense; something different from my what my parents listened to. I think this album DEFINED my musical tastes for a very long time. Now that my preferences have a lot more diversity, I listen to fewer of the seminal albums of my life, and I think that needs to change. Fuck, this is a good album! Every track is special to me. 5/5

The perfect quintessential grunge album. This deserves all its accolades and is head and shoulders above the other Nirvana albums. The backgrounds of these guys though is a bit suspicious - especially Dave Grohl.

Duh. Dave Grohl's drumming alone makes it a 5. Also, Something in the Way is just so hauntedly beautiful.

What’s this? Punk music with Guns N Roses styled production? Crass, lewd, and non-sensical lyrics — how can you kids listen to this? I feel really bad for this generation. Get a job! This album defined a generation.

One of my easiest 5 stars.

It's good Will I listen to again: 100%

bro, i cannot believe nirvana is among the first 5 stars i give these. grew up thinking these dudes were overrated af bc i only knew their overplayed singles. listening to nevermind now i can't help but feel like we would only have stood to gain if Kurt had managed to hold on a little tighter. on the other hand, that tragedy confirms just how disgustingly predatory the music industry is. nothing has changed. anyway, this record has zero skips for me & it still sounds fresh & necessary today. that's impressive.

Wow. Been a long time since I have listened to the full album. Forgot how good some of the lesser played tracks are. Still a masterpiece.

One of the greatest albums of all time

Definite grunge classic

Adjusted and defined the music industry for generations to come. Guitar parts are catchy and classic. Drum parts defined a new era and style for drumming. Catchy drums that go with the music, similar to Ringo, but much more talented and capable.

I mean c'mon - probably the best second album ever. Butch Vig's production is huge and everything about the album is so good. Guitars, vocals, drums, the mix, the sensitivity and aggression.

In Uteros better but still

Not as good as Badmotorfinger…

Smells Like Teen Spirit still has the ability to transport me back to the feeling I had when I first listened to it.

So good.

Rock done right. Lots of variety, amazing vocal performance, exciting and interesting bass lines, lyrical genius that captures angst without sounding immature; it can't be anything other than 5 stars.

So much changed when I first hearts when it came out. Still an7ncg to the gut.

🤘🏻

This album is everything you would want a hit album to be, and does so effortlessly.

Can one be objective when one’s sense of self and view of the world is so heavily influenced by the subject? I’m almost honor bound to just give a 5 just by looking at the track list. Unique sound, voice and lyrics. Not the most complex guitar or drums (Grohl admits he basically just bit a bunch of disco tracks but it’s still unique to apply them in such a way) but the bass does drive a lot of the music. Their impact is evident and there’s a reason a lot of people come across Nirvana early in their musical journeys. I’ve listened to this album a few times and while I have some songs I don’t keep on rotation I think that particularly because of the sound and aura that is Nirvana that songs like Breed kind of should be semi-indecipherable noise at times. It’s the song that keeps playing while you grab a drink after the mosh, the one you actually start doing work to when you convince yourself that music was all you needed to get motivated. You write it off until it’s over then you kind of wish you listened more attentively. I had 5 songs I had in rotation before this listen and I’m up to 6. It’s a frontloaded album for sure but as Archimedes said “give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it and I will move the world”.

Something I found kind of ironic about this album is that even though it oozes anti establishment and the whole grunge era stuff etc, it’s relatively formulaic. Hear me out, if you take out some of the distorted guitar and clean up cobains voice a little, it could sound like a pop punk album. Now I don’t mean this in a bad way and actually quite the opposite. I think that’s why this album was so commercially successful in that it disguises itself as this full on grunge thing but actually has very catchy/easy to learn choruses and pop-adjacent chord structures. Even the songs I didn’t know I found myself singing along to by the end of like 2-3 minutes. Having that kind of songwriting ability is so freakin rare to where it’s not just a distinct “one for me and one for them” type of vibe but rather a beautiful blend of writing what you know and actually making it something people want to listen to. There’s like six songs on here that are certified to but I’ve got to give special love to come as you are. Gahhhh that opening guitar riff is sooooooo good. Splooge worthy. Also, something in the way in the new Batman movie was sick. I hate the baby penis just staring me in the face. But other than that, I really can’t not give this a five.

Iconic in every sense of the word. Massive hits, solidified the grunge sound, and changed music afterwords forever. There are a couple songs I could do without, but there are too many classics to justify anything lower than a four. I’m bumping this one up to a five on the influence alone.

The fivest of fives. Not a mediocre song on the album, let alone a bad one. A masterpiece from start to finish. Highlights are too many to mention, but Breed, Polly, and Smells Like Teen Spirit take it, with an honorable mention to the assault on the ears that is Endless, Nameless.

One of the albums and songs that I can still remember the exact first time I heard it. I hadn’t listened to the whole album in a while and am pleasantly surprised how it holds up.

It's a 4.5 for me but will give it the 5 as it was such an impactful album. A 90s classic!

Good album. Innovative. Very dark in mood and outlook, yet with evocative music, lyrics and vocals. Glad I listened to it again. I cannot say I enjoyed it. More like I drowned in it.

The radio songs (other than maybe Lithium) have been played to the point that I don’t even really hear them anymore. Otherwise it’s hard to express how this sounded when it was fresh

Affirmed classic, the face of Grunge, and top tier production values. Not my favourite by them, but it still merits 5 stars!

One of the best rock albums of all time. We're all tired of hearing it, but it can still wear the crown for all I'm concerned.

Have you really been a teenager if you didn't loved this album to death? I mean... I learned to play music with it, I cried with it, I celebrated with it. This album is the pure representation of a great rock records : it makes you feel alive.

Incredible and timeless.

Fantastic album. 4.6 stars

I mean what else can I say that hasn’t been said

This is very solid grunge album, probably the best in the genre.
