Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Great punk record--love the rush and urgency.

I wouldn't mind listening to this again!

I enjoyed this more than a lot of the punk albums I've gotten, but it's not quite there for me. Just didn't fully catch my attention. I enjoyed the more varied sound. I feel like I blinked and the album was half way over, then the second half dragged a little. That's a problem I have with punk. That rebellious sound loses its punch 14 songs in. My favourite song was Plan 9 Channel 7.

Their sound is very punk, that's for sure. They are tighter and a little more musical than some of the punk offerings of the era. High energy, etc. Fun stuff.

It seems I had, unfairly, written these guys off as a novelty act. There was some interesting stuff in here

Ihan hauska setti. Viime aikoina ollut niin silkkaa kuraa nämä levyt että objektiivisuus katoaa ja annetaan yrityksestä 3*. Reilua? Ei. Kiinnostaako? Ei.

Fine enough Punk album but nothing too spectacular, better when it treads into more hardcore territory. Liked Looking At You too, but nothing I'd be fussed about returning to. 3/5

This was pretty good.

old school bluesy punk that your local edgy brewery would play at a slightly too loud volume

Seems like The Damned are one of the proto-punk pre-hardcore bands that were influential. Beyond that though, not a ton that interests me sonically. Some surprisingly more complex guitar work than typical punk though.

I like it. The more I listen to it, the more I like it.

This feels like the most mediocre album on the list so far. I’m giving it a 3 mostly because my rating system has changed again and also because all of the other punk albums have gotten pretty bad ratings. I don’t dislike punk, it just keeps happening for some reason.

I’m not a huge punk rock fan but some of these songs are pretty fun

Before today, I've never heard of The Damned. They are a mid-late 70's punk band from Britain; from the same era as The Clash and The Sex Pistols. Actually, interestingly, I learned that two people were asked to audition for The Damned: Dave Vanian, and Sid Vicious (who became the Sex Pistols bassist). Only Dave showed up, and ultimately got the job. Captain Sensible became The Damned's bassist. The aliases some of these lads use are hilarious: Captain Sensible, and Rat Scabies for example. Their sound is classic punk, and was a great listen today! Dave has a funny way of spinning lyrics, such as in the song "These Hands" about a murderous clown, or "Anti-Pope" about organized religion. One interesting thing these guys do is use a synthesizer from time to time, which is something you don't normally see in punk music. Overall, not a bad listen. Nothing really stood out, but I would definately listen again if given the chance. Favourite songs: "Noise, Noise, Noise", Anti-Pope, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Plan 9 Channel 7, Machine Gun Etiquette Least favourite songs: These Hands (because fuck clowns) 3/5

Ehh pretty midroad punkish music. Nothing more to say. Some great guitar work at times but not enough to elevate it beyond that.

Més musical que la seva estrena, però un xic menys punyent. Temes com 'I Just Can't Be Happy Today' o 'Smash It Up' són imprescindibles de l'época i tot plegat es disfruta com un treball robust i recomenable

Enjoyable late 70s punk with a slight experimental edge. I like it. Not blowing me away but I think it might be a "Seinfeld is unfunny" situation.

Neither here nor there.

Eh. Too loud. Love Song is great though.

UK punk. It's decent. Nothing too controversial. Maybe the worst compliment for a punk band?

More pop-punk than the familiar Punk from the late 70s and 80s icons like Ramons, Clash, and Sex Pistols, The Damned apply a Punk ideal to a post-punk / new wave sound that is pretty interesting. Worthy of a listen to hear how punk rock has evolved over the years. 3/5.

So British punk has been my big discovery, but I know the Damned. I just can't quite get into them as much, will need to try some of their other stuff.

It was a punk rock album. It wasn't bad. It wasn't good. Better than a 2 not really a 3. I will round up because it was relatively short and I didn't skip any songs.

Un poco más que punk, no está mal. Lo mejor: "Anti-Pope".

I enjoyed this much more than I tend to with punk rock - it was high energy and frenetic without being too chaotic and overwhelming

Felt very punk rock.

Classic authentico 70s punk

Never heard of it. Is this early punk? First couple of songs were a bit unremarkable, but they were short enough that I can appreciate it. Track 3, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, sounds more interesting, almost like a Talking Heads vibe. Now with Melody Lee, I'm seeing this album, albeit short, is much more a mixed bag than I would've guessed. These Hands is fuckin' weird, but I like it.

A pretty good punk album, not my favorite punk album but very interesting

It was fine. That is all.

I enjoyed, especially the spoken opening line 😄

Joyful, high-tempo punk rock

Hadn't heard this before. In a way, it sounded to me like some different kind of punk. With a couple of twists I didn't quit expect. Good!

A very solid Brit punk album from a band I did not know. Overall, it is a classic. I still have my top favorite punk albums and this won't be in it, but I can see why this band is considered highly innovative. The driving drums combined with the various singing styles were the highlight for me.

It was ok, I guess. Nothing really stood out or was particularly memorable.

I like this album quite a bit. I listened to it 3 times. The guitar work stands out. I like Plan 9 Channel 7 fairly well. A solid punk experience.

Never heard of them before, but it was fine to listen to.

Decent punk, not amazing though.

My first impression of this band was to automatically categorise it as 'Another Punk Band', and then just move one. But after listening to this album a little bit more, I realised that it is original in its sound. Punk Rock, but with a twist. The twist in this case is the horror-themed motives and parts added to the songs. Guitars especially making wooing sounds, creating a nice, Halloween like atmosphere. For a while, it made the album really original and pleasurable to listen. Unfortunately, vocal on this album had to be produced in the Factory of Generic Punk Rock Vocalists. It did bring the whole experience down a level or two. I will give this band another shot in the future, but probably try to cancel out the singer, to properly enjoy it.

Very punk! For some reason though, it doesn't have the energy or grandeur of The Ramones. There's a Pixies vibe I get from them instead of something wholly original. But brit punk is amazing, and they're a classic element of it! It's a 3.4/5, rounded down to 3.

Thumping bass lines and thrash guitar riffs, I'm guessing inspired the Pixies.

Anti-Pope tem uns instrumentos interessantes.

Bringing in the lads from the Clash in to clap their hands on track 2 pulls it all together. lol I'm glad there's a bit of rock mixed in. All punk would be a tough listen. I guess the influential part is the influence on hardcore? Since I doesn't like hardcore this fact doesn't get an uplift in my books.

The first twenty seconds of the first song says "we are more than a punk band" and a minute later they hammer home the point with a guitar solo, of all things. They were definitely Introducing other sounds and styles on this album. Anti-Pope sounds like a Woodstock jam that breaks into a punk song. The last minute of Plan 9 Channel 7 with the extended guitar solo over falsetto howls may be my favorite. The more punk inflected songs I find less interesting, but they stand up well next to those of their peers from that era. Between a 3 and a 4 for me.

Not bad, decent album, not fully my rope though

My experience with punk is relatively limited. I don't think I've heard of The Damed before and I didn't know any of the tracks on Machine Gun Etiquette. Most of the album was okay. "These Hands" was my least favorite, and at only 2 minutes 3 seconds the track tried my patience. "Noise, Noise, Noise" got my highest rating. There was enough here to say that the album is okay, but I'd probably only want to hear some of the tracks again.

Like some bass in your punk songs? Well too bad as this band's third album comes back with tinny production, muffled vocals and longer songs. They want to stretch their horrible wings to try and take in other genres other than punk. Could this be prog-punk? Best Tracks: Anti-Pope; Looking At You; Samsh It Up, Pt. 1 & 2

I was completely neutral on this. It never grabbed my attention positively or negatively.

Not as raw as some of their earlier stuff, but I liked that they kept the aggression, and dug deeper into melody.

After listening to the I Against I album of Bad Brains, this is what I had expected that to sound like, fast, solid, aggressive and pretty good.

Pretty enjoyable. Conor was pleased. Conor - 3.5 Shannah - 2 Bill - 2 (2.5/5)

har ikkje hørt på dei før sette alltid pris på litt god gammal punk men ikkje da besta eg har hørt heller

På tide at eg sjekke ut The Damned. Syns da va ok, så blir sikkert et gjenlytt igjen snart. Likte første delen av Smash it up

I enjoyed a good bit of today's album. I find that I prefer my punk with a side of humor or fun.

Not being the least bit familiar with this album or these artists, the first listen was just to get my toes wet and to establish a sense of what was in store….it was not a sound that embraced me, but was tolerable. On the second listen I realized that this album is actually quite listenable for me. I think that falling in love with the punk-rock sound is not easy for me. But I ended the second listen on the verge of like for this album.

This sounds so familiar to me since it's what I grew up with. Listening critically though it's not the best in any shape or form- other bands had been there before and the lyrics and musicianship is pretty average. I guess they edge it for me in their cuddliness and good looks.

Exciting, fun, fast paced punk with some pop sensibility.

Perfectly fine but the vocal style wasn't really up my alley. Standout tracks: "I Just Can't Be Happy Today," "These Hands"

The Damned return with a solid entry as they start experimenting more with a harder punk sound. One thing that sticks out is how smooth the tracks transition from one to another. Didn't even notice "Love Song" and the titular track were different. "I Just Can't Be Happy Today" starts drifting into New Wave territory. We'll see the synths again in the next few and the closer. "Melody Lee" cranks up the speed but still has New Wave-esque vocal style. This and "Noise Noise Noise" through "Liar" are proto-hardcore examples, very noisy and abrasive. Lengths of the early were fine, but the later ones were hitting 5 minutes and overstaying their welcome. There were a lot a misses, and I don't think anything stands against their debut except the first 3 tracks and "Smash It Up" but they're wacky and there's plenty to like.

Niet zo hoog vliegend punkalbum

3-; album wasn't bad but it wasn't special either. Plan 9 Channel 7 is my personal favorite, 3- instead of 2,5 for this one

I'm not generally a fan of the classic punk era but I do like The Damned!

3/20/2022 Today's Album: "Machine Gun Etiquette" by The Damned - To start, this album has fairly decent production, with the instruments feeling well mixed and very warm / full. The chorus of the first song Love Song is really catchy despite such a heavy demeanor. The title track after that introduces the general sound of this album, being a very mosh-pit focused piece of headbanging hard rock. That being said, I think this is a really solid showing for the genre. 1979 feels like it would have been pretty early in the hard rock scene, so this album really feels like one of those genre-starting classics that holds up against all of the cliche's it created. The 3rd song I Just Can't Be Happy Today sounds really nice, but the vocals are starting to really grate on me, as these vocals have never really been my thing. Very similar to Billy Idol or Depeche Mode, whom I have a lot of respect for. I just don't think I like the monotone vocals trying to sound cool. There's a great synth solo in this track, however, so it's probably my favorite of the first 3 tracks. The following Melody Lee feels like sort of wasted potential, with this nice piano opening being interrupted by this chugging rock track that just feels really uninteresting and too heavy. After the similarly forgettable Anti-Pope, These Hands brings this strange carnival organ into the mix and I actually sort of like how weird it sounds but then there's a bunch of manic laughing before everything cuts to these muddy footsteps tracking around the left channel. It just sounds kinda gross tbh. Then, Plan 9 Channel 7 is a more straightforward rock track and I like this one quite a bit. It's a great example of the genre that would eventually spawn from music like this in the 80s and it has a really fun chorus line and guitar riff. The vocals sound great and the bass has a great chugging energy. Noise, Noise, Noise brings the energy back to the more heavy stuff they were doing earlier, but it still sounds pretty great with solid performances from the band (vocals still kinda blow). The chorus isn't half bad so its half decent. Looking At You feels very similar to Anti-Pope, being another annoying and boring, yet fast paced track. Liar is the same kind of story as Looking At You and Anti-Pope. Finally, the closer Smash It Up is a pretty solid track, reminding me of something like Alan Parson's Project and then transitioning into something similar to R.E.M. It keeps that same Depeche Mode type energy as the rest of the tracklist, but has some really warm instrumentation and a more energetic bassline / drum combo. Overall, this record shines in a lot of places, and although some of it isn't great in my opinion, nothing is really too bad and shows a better side of punk/hard rock than I have seen from other albums in the generator. Score: 6,5/10 Not bad Highlights: I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Plan 9 Channel 7, Smash It Up.

It's alright

Has some interesting ideas but the mixing is terrible on several tracks

More punk. ok.

Not bad actually. Favorite Songs: Love Song, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, "Smash It Up, Pt. 1 & 2"

I don’t usually like punk all that much, but I liked this album more than other punk I’ve heard. A couple songs I really liked a lot, such as Plan 9 Channel 7. The majority of the songs I thought were pretty enjoyable. Great drums and lead guitar. I’m torn between 3 and 4.

Fun but tiring. Sounds quite influential

Not a big punk guy, but enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Actually catchy and sounds decent.

wasn't really in the mood for punk on a monday, but still a good listen.

Not bad

Not as good as the first album. Ironically more punk with less pop sensibilities - I’d assume that to the case on the first album, not a subsequent one.

Poppy punk era Damned, packed with tunes and catchy guitar riffs, phased guitars, wobbly keyboards, with hints of psychedelia, cymbals merrily splashing all the while, in a hearty, ramshackle way

It’s a guitary rock album? It’s fine.

Oi Oi Oi! x 12

Pretty good

After reading the lyrics to this album, and coming across Vanian's proclamation that "Noise is for heroes, leave the music to zeroes", I was bracing myself for amateurish, tuneless garbage. I haven't heard any Damned before and was expecting a much more stripped-back, warts-and-all punk album than this, but there's quite a lot going on here. Immediate impression was the absolute work-out the drummer must have been getting: if I knew more about either genre, I'd claim how those 180bpm, 2/4 beats influenced a generation of up-and-coming metal and hardcore bands. Rather than let this heaviness define them completely, The Damned balance it out with humour, some varied instrumentation and genuinely attractive melodies. Once I'd got over the shock of "wait, there's a good hook!" in opener Love Song (rockabilly pirate folk punk?), and "wow, keyboard, handclaps and a lovely ORGAN SOLO!" in the highlight "I Just Can't Be Happy Today", it settled into a bit more of a rhythm. There were just enough interesting chord changes, intricate structures and stylistic influences to keep me guessing where each song would go, always something I appreciate. But despite this, the end result was more admiration of an above-average punk band than a feeling I was hearing a genre-defining work or an album that would become a favourite. Other shout-outs to: the groovy, trippy instrumental break in Anti-Pope, the chorus of "Plan 9 Channel 7", the closing "Smash It Up" manifesto and the moment it kicks in after around 2m.

Good punk. Good variety, not one note like much of the punk from the low era, all punk eras for that matter. I heard examines, Sex Pistols and television. Didn’t knock my socks off but I enjoyed it. 3

Had never listened to The Damned prior to this. Rather enjoyable punk album. First track instantly reminded me of The Offspring, and I was teleported back to junior high, frosted tips, and general angst and ennui. I've found a lot of punk to be fairly one dimensional (which maybe is the point), but I appreciated the variety and nuance here.

A solid punk/rock release that holds up. Plan 9 Channel 7 and Love Song are the strongest, though the others carry good energy throughout the album.

Un bon album punk rock. Moins mon style mais j'ai apprecié . 3.75

Liked this. While I enjoy much of the music that it influenced more than I enjoy this, its importance in guiding the way for others can't be understated. A solid punk album. Not sure I would listen to again, but would have no issue if someone else put it on.

Apart from a few energetic and impactful tracks at the start of the album, the shouting and laughing (!) gets a little tired and repetitive.

Cool title. Solid Album Artwork. It's a mix of like New wave, punk and some groove in there. While I don't think it's the greatest thing in the world I do think it's crazy amounts of fun. I'd always heard of them, but never really picked up and listened to anything by them. I listened to the No dogs in space podcast cover them. It's solid stuff, and they are crazy interesting with how much shit they went through. I'd recommend this album and the podcast.

Well all be Damned; good album from a genre I loved growing up but didn't come across. Smash it Up will be added to my sons sports playlist. The Clash just did it way better. 3.4

This record grew on me the further in I got, and I enjoyed it pretty well by the end. The music is better than the lyrics here, but that doesn’t detract from being able to enjoy it. Also, The Offspring have a great cover of Smash it Up out there, check it out.

Enjoyed it. Not as good as their debut but a good listen more varied in style 3.5 🌟

just ok

It was all right.

Really solid second half with some great Rocky songs. First half is standard 1979 British punk. Just missed out on a 4/5

A lot of punky goodness here. Guitars thrash like a machine gun, but the sound is very polished and the songs are surprisingly more tuneful and melodic than I was expecting. Lots of wit and humour present here.

Only made it halfway. Loved the opening track.

Better than I was expecting.

I'll be damned. U početku mi je bilo eh, mislim nije da je album vrhunski ili odličan, ali je okej. Nothing more, nothing less. Par pjesama su izvukli rejting.

a lot more hard rock/ early metal vibes in this

6/10. Liked it more than I've liked a lot of the punk/punk rock stuff on this list, but at the end of the day it is still a bit too frantic and edgy to be particularly pleasant to listen to.

Like the radio

Fast and hard charging. Unlike lots of other punk outfits, these guys can actually play. Nice synth additions. Vocals come through clear.

Never been the biggest Damned fan...but enjoyed this more than most.

Helt ålreit

rockin brits not super memorable but not bad

Netter tune 3

Not bad, some catchy melodies, but overall it all blends into generic rock

It’s ok punk

More of a 2.5 album. Not really sure how I felt about it, but it felt marginally better than expected.

This felt like a much more interesting punk rock album than the ones I've heard previously. Plan 9 Channel 7 reminds me Pigs by Pink Floyd, maybe cus it's in the same key but it really got me.

Pretty decent punk rock a la Britain

It's okay, hasn't held up incredibly well but is good for a fun listen.

Very early punk. I'm sure young Nathaniel would have loved (or did love) this album.

I have a feeling i'd like this album a lot if I got a few more listens. For now it's a 3.5

Unfortunately I wasn't a huge fan. But ultimately this was fine, if a bit forgettable.

This was kinda cool, can definitely hear where the Misfits got a bit of inspiration. I'm not a huge fan of this early punk stuff but this was alright. 3/5.

206. ok

Punk is so exhausting for me to listen to

Surprisingly melodic and guitar-y.

Overstimulated

Some good ideas but I just cant get into punk. Too many cymbals constantly ringing in my ears, makes it so I cant hear anything else.

Was expecting a bit more. Intresting as an early post punk record but I found it a bit boring to be honest.

06/02 Average and generic sounding punk

OK punk.

It's fine, not very interesting, but I didn't hate it.

I don't know if an album has ever gone downhill as quickly and as comprehensively as this. It starts quite spectacularly really, very visceral and thumping (I was on a treadmill for this and found it ideal). Then, it descends into abject nonsense. There are two point that, as is so often the case, shows that boys into heavy rock never stop being 13 years old. One is the pointless cry of 'bollocks' at some point, and the other is the endless laughing on a track somewhere in the middle. Both those things are infuriating enough to make me really hate the end of the album. Take yourselves seriously or no-one else will.

Too much drums and the singing is ass. 1.5 stars.

There are albums I actively dislike or I find very hard to listen to that earn one star. Then there are those albums which don't actively turn me off, but which just sort of become background noise. Those are two stars. You can tell from my rating which one of those this was.

Bland to my ears, just loads of white boiz being "punk". Nothing special, no good melodies and gives patriarchy in its whole aura. A few good guitars dotted throughout

Not a patch on The Clash.

This was a mediocre punk rock album for me. Not bad, but nothing really exciting. You can hear a lot of influence of some of these songs in later bands though. Nothing really thrilled me about the album. I kinda feel this way about most British punk and post-punk. Negative points for the demented circus song "These Hands." I freaking hate when bands do crap like that. It's a 2 for me. Just didn't get anything out of Machine Gun Etiquette.

Pretty meh

Punk? I guess. This is pretty paint by the numbers and goes to show how many "punk" bands there were by 1979. Nothing stands out. Subpar. 2

It's okay. I like the first song, but nothing else is sticking out to me. I like that guy's furry pants.

Punk. Krach.

its whatever

I sound like an old cranky man where all of these older rock bands sound the same and I'm just not feeling it.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't is how the saying goes, I think i'm in the "don't" camp. Although I do like Smash it Up and some other tracks on alternative Damned albums....

Pretty fair album

This one inspired indifference. 2.5/5

fine I liked the psychedelic touches, a clear 2.5 but rounded to 2 currently (could move up on another listen)

Este álbum no me gusto en particular, siento que tenes que estar muy en el mood, lo sentí como las canciones que tendrían que sonar de fondo si hubiera una pelea en un bar, solo una canción me llamo realmente la atención, pero casi todas eran iguales.

Not for me. Not terrible though. Nothing I ever need to hear again.

Meh (2.5)

This was better than I was anticipating for a punk album. Much less speed and screaming and more form and function.

mostly hated it

boring

Not terrible

Not for me

Did not suit my taste very much. I can see the appeal tho

Les Ramones en moins bien

Not a big fan of Punk music and this didn't do anything to sway me.

lost und langweilig

Album 16/1001. Listened 2/9/2026. It's ok, a bit too stoner jam rock for me. There are a few licks that clearly got sampled by other artists, which is cool. Definitely not an album I'll listen to again.

Album No. 0135 on my list. I had been aware of the existence of The Damned, but had never listened to any song of this album before, so this was completely new territory to me. To be quite frank, I'm not the biggest fan of "Machine Gun Etiquette" to be frank. I definitely get why it is on this list. Why it was an important album for the development of the whole punk genre and post-punk and hardcore in particular. It's just not my cup of tea unfortunately. I don't particularly enjoy the combination of punk and other influences (not even sure why, but it is what it is). The production is off as well and I find the songs a bit dull. Will add "Love Song", and "Anti-Pope" to my playlist. In the end, it's not a bad album and I was unsure whether I should give it three stars, but I want to rate it based on my opinion and not based on a (perceived) influence on other stars. I really tried to like "Machine Gun Etiquette", but was not successful, unfortunately. 2/5 stars.

i didn’t rly vibe with it but i also think punk rock is not my style

an interesting collection of songs.

And when all hope was lost, comes Smash It Up (Part 1). One truly decent song

Some noise, a bit of melody, but just meh for me.

Doofer rock.

The second half had some great instrumental play, and the final two tracks were enjoyable, but other than that, it's just typical, annoying Punk Rock grunting, shouting, and noise. Favorite Track: "Smash It Up Pt. 1".

A very typical rock album aside from the laughing intermission. Favourite track: Anti-Pope

Feels like a band running out of ideas

I only really knew the Damned song Neat Neat Neat before this from the No Thanks! compilation. It looks like they referenced that one on track 8 of this record. Unfortunately, that song is better than anything on this album. I like this style and time period but this record doesn't do that much for me. I liked the first track and Plan 9 Channel 7 but most of it slid by without me really noticing.

I didn't find it interesting. Musically, it's fine but not my style. Lyrics are boring and some of the tracks are repetitive af.

Some songs were okay, some were terrible.

Punk doesn’t do it for me…bunch of whiny rebels for no reason, reminds me of a boring, gray, rainy day. There’s no connection with my soul. The music sounds like noise and the vocals are off pitch with a drunken, sloppy, British accent. There’s no soul here, nothing catchy. The whole 70s Brit punk scene is so derivative…from album covers, to music, to image, to content. I’m surprised this stuff surged in America where we had real live soul, funk, rock, pop, rnb going on.

Didn’t really like this one, only song I liked was the first one, I guess I don’t really like this sort of punk.

Ihan menevää meininkiä tämäkin. Anarkistista, tulee sana tässä mieleen.

**An ok album, too much screaming and banging, screeching instruments

It’s fine. Nondescript British punk with no standout songs. Whatever.

This was okay. I thought it was a bit shallow and what it was saying, didn’t feel that punk, but what do I know. I don’t think I’d listen again.

Great opening to the album. I cannot stand punk though Jesus Christ. This first song has a pleasant chord progression in the chorus. Track 2 is the title track. I hate it. Track 3 is more interesting and starting to foreshadow the 80s, there’s a talking heads and Morrissey vibe. The talking pieces are kind of fun. Yeah I’m going to call this song fun. Great instrumental bridge with some kind of hurdy gurdy instrument. The lyrics though are straight empowered boomer nonsense and highly cringe. “We’re not going to be happy! Because no one can tell us what to do! Because we make our own rules!” Okay boomer. Track 4 is a ballad with Billy Joel chords. Oh never mind now it’s punk. I hate this. Track 5 is snotty kid punk about church. I hate it. Good electric guitar on the bridge though. This bit is foreshadowing Walk Like an Egyptian of all things. Track 6 is a horrific attempt at a Beatles song. Is this actually morrissey singing? I hate this. I hate everything about this. Track 7 is an Eric Clapton song. This album is derivative nonsense. Track 8 is the only kind of punk I sort of like which is dirty guitar that foreshadows grunge. Ope no that ended and now it’s bad. The lyrics are atrociously self important. Oh no and with some Rex Harrisoning thrown in. THIS IS AWFUL I HATE IT. Worst chorus I’ve ever heard. Track 9 is more proto-Talking Heads, or if TH was out by now then it’s a ripoff with a punk beat. I hate it. Track 10 is a first draft, they should have workshopped this more. I hate it. Track 11 is the closing track and very much foreshadows 90s alternative rock in a fun way. Great bass line. Oh now it’s turned into sort of a bland 70s strummer. Aaaaaand now it’s boring late 70s pop punk with a lot of derivative guitar and organ. I hate it. The end!

Osti que j’suis TANNÉ du punk trash de garage, si demain c’est du Slipknot, je commets un crime

So, not a big fan of Punk, but at least it doesn’t offend me. I would give this a 2.5 if I could, but as you know, no half points.

I'm trying to be more open to punk music, but so much of it descends into just noise for me. I'll start to like the song, but then the drums and guitar riffs take over. What was up with all the laughing in "These Hands", I guess laughing can be music? "Noise, Noise, Noise" Most appropriate song title ever! I liked the beginning of the song, "Smash It Up Pts 1&2" but then with the melody change it just descended into chaos. This was one of those albums where I liked snippets of the songs rather than the whole song. Worse song was "Anti-Pope".

Sounds like music I would hear on the old Tony Hawk games. I like the vibe of the music but often the vocals don't work for me. No of this music is offensive, I listened to it all the way through with no skips but it feels kinda flavorless. I don't find myself really remembering the songs and wanting to relisten to any of them.

IDK, It was okay, and I made it through. Did not like the song, Machine gun etiquette, but it got better after that. still - not going on my list.

The three great English punk bands, the pistols, the clash and the damned. Pistols burn out after an and a bit albums. Clash do four classics and one dud before dying in a gutter. And these guys flash brilliantly and then spend a long time imploding. We’ve heard the good one. This is just critical darling and ignorance of rock and roll shit. Has every album this week been two stars?

Enough punk, pls

tyckte att de mindre punkiga elementen kändes aningen malplacerade, den "rena" punken var det väl inget fel på, men inget speciellt heller...

Punk band started making nicer music. 2/5

I generally dislike most punk. Can't abide people that are proud that they can't play their instruments. And the vocalists are usually trying to outdo each other with how annoying they can possibly sound. (See Johnny Lydon) This doesn't suffer from that as much. Seem to be decent quality musicians here! "Smash It Up Pt. 1" is a nice instrumental that I wish they would separated from Pt. 2 that's basically 1 lyric repeated a million times. While I don't love any of it, I can at least understand why people like this one. It's not for me, but that doesn't mean it's garbage. But since the scoring is based on how much I like it and not how the world likes it, I'm going to give it a 2.

Punk almost always sounds the same to me though there is more melody here than in many punk albums of the 70s. I admire punks energy and ferocity but I feel like it was a 'you had to be there' movement. Top Track - Smash It Up Pts. 1 & 2

Most punk rock is a little bit messy by design. Sometimes this adds to the charm or gives it some edge to help it stand out. Other times it just makes an album sound bad and leaves me uninterested. Machine Gun Etiquette fell into the latter category. I wrapped up the album and basically wanted to move on. I didn't take much from it. At least they varied it up a bit and mixed up their vocals and included some piano at times. Machine Gun Etiquette didn't really do it for me. 1.76 stars

I remember punk from period as a 'reaction' against the rather silly excesses of glam rock and prog. In that context it 'worked' and was needed. Out of context and nearly 50 years later it comes across as crude, badly played, and unnecessary. It is possible to combine 'back to basics' with skilful playing, some of their contemporaries managed it, but these guys swing and miss. I might have enjoyed this in 1979. 2/5.

I was annoyed that I was served another punk album and I almost skipped this one, BUT I didn't hate it. It was pretty fun! I don't ever need to listen to it again, but I kind of got a kick out of it.

Different than what I normally listen again but I liked the energy behind the songs but the lyrics weren’t that flushed out to me it I liked the instruments if they have a instrumental album I would really like that a lot, I listened to this album while walking to my dog

Mouais.. Vraiment chelou parfois j'ai trouvé.

Never heard this before. Not enjoyable to me.

Not bad! No single track grabbed me, though. I ultimately don't plan to return to anything on this. Compared to other entries in this genre it felt a bit nondescript to me.

Cover art review - great looking Brit/punk band - very 1979 vibe. Interesting punk title to the album and the band's logo/font is somewhat iconic. Solid rock/punk rock late 70s album. Didn't really recognize any of the songs, but dug the vibe and made it all the way through. Kind of an early alternative sound to it as well.

The Damnedista en ollut aiemmin kuullutkaan. Seiskytluvun lopun punkkia, ei oikeen nappaa. Kyllähän tuon läpi kuunteli, mutta aika sinnillä mentiin koska loppujenlopuksi aika ykstoikkosta musaa. Ei aivan täyttä paskaa muttei keskiverto kolmosta ihan ansaitse, vahva kakkonen.

Avausbiisi kertoi heti mitä on tulossa, mutta levyn edetessä siellä taisi eksyä sekaan jokunen melodiakin. Ei kyllä oikein omaan musiikkihermoon kolahtanut, enkä tule todennäköisesti koskaan kuuntelemaan uudestaan edes vahingossa.

Hauskaa rämpyttelyä mutta siihenpä se sitten jäikin.

Ymmärrän, miksi tämä oli keskeinen levy. Jotenkin aikakaudelle tyypilliset Sex Pistols -vibat.

Some interesting sounds but the songs themselves didn’t really grab me. I think punk has to be catchy to make its abrasiveness work, and this wasn’t for me.

nearly a 1 but not entirely unlistenable

Not bad, but just not for me. Did nothing for me personally.

All over the place. Hatar inte men sätter nog inte på självmant

J'aime pas + La qualité est affreuse

Not much about this album will stick with me. It definitely is the sound of the time, but there is nothing that makes it stand out.

Cool album and band name. It lead me to believe it would be a take-no-prisoners banger. Instead it was punk music that led me down a tunnel of disappointment. Not bad overall but not what I was expecting.

Second 70s British punk album in two days. There’s not enough variety there for two consecutive days of it.

Trying to develop more criteria for this Proper English punk album Not my usual thing, decent sound but don't think I'll go back to it

I understand parents now.

Energetic and fun. But for me this now seems dated rather than essential. 2.5/5

This was a damned stupid album.

I survived

Meh, nothing special

Not my thing

No standouts, but album was OK

No for me

I dont understand the fascination of all things demonic

Machine gun being an apt comparison as each track passed through my brain with the same speed and effect as a 9mm round.

Nothing really interesting, but it’s also not hard punk.

Started strong but fizzled out quickly. First couple songs are good and enjoyable but the rest just gets stale.

4/10… punk

Good punk album, it's a quick listen and had some moments that hit well. Altogether though it was too short.

It was fine. Nothing really stood out.

I liked it better than the beadles. Not more than a 2 though I appreciate the high-energy nature.

I don’t really think I needed that. 3/10

This record is often noisy in the way I dislike, but there were a few diamonds in the rough. I appreciate the keys on “I Just Can’t Be Happy Today”, the production, and the tight percussion throughout. Standout tracks are: “Smash It Up” and “I Just Can’t Be Happy Today”

Some of the songs seemed a little all over the place, which might have been the intended style but not something that I would appreciate necessarily. It would receive a 2.5 if possible but will be given a 2.

Not the typical political brit punk I've heard before. Seems less 'serious' and hits various styles. I don't hate it but I don't love it either. I can see what it's one of the 1001. 2/5.

Tim: “At least it’s melodic punk. … I wouldn’t say I was eager to listen to it again, but it wasn’t horrendous.” Ditto. (It was slightly better than a 2, but certainly not a 3.)

Always thought they were chancers…

I loved how this started, unfortunately it fell off as it went on.

it was mid. some all right parts but not for me

Some ok punky rock but nothing too memorable for me.

Classic Punk by the book, but the book isn't for me. 1.5/5

Honestly just sounded like punk themed static. Album repeated at least once without me noticing. Not bad, just nothing that stands out.

Not really my genre

Would have been ok if it was live

kinda boring

The Good: it seems there is an etiquette to machine guns… The Bad: does it makes sense that it’s the damned who tell us about this etiquette? The Ugly: due to the stutter, I am still clueless as to what the etiquette is! For those of you who don’t understand the stutter comment before… what sound does a machine gun make? Right. ‘70s punk. 11 songs on a 36 minute album. 1-2 1-2-3-4 Is it good? Sure. Is it bad? Sure. Is it something that needs to be heard before one dies? Well, if the list is over a 1000 albums, it might just be needed… I guess… 2* because it did make me feel like I was wasting my time

Somewhere between 80s pop and 70s punk lies the Damned. This album was thoroughly… okay. I know they had a heavy influence in the 80s but as for their own album I think you had to be there in the time when this came out for it to have an impact. Antipope was a good punk ballad, and I was familiar with the song Liar but overall this album for me was a one and done.

Not my favorite album I’ve heard on this list, but far from the worst. Not much to want to come back to. 2.5/5

so many people are weak and then have to seek answers from pedlars of hope. ** Although the content and message of these lyrics could be debated, they are interesting enough to bring it up from a one star. Apparently this band influenced the Goth sub-culture too... Has not dated well.

There’s something about early British punk that just doesn’t click with me. A few of the songs have a good sound. These Hands is terrible. Anti—Pope is solid. There are a handful of different sounds on this album. Smash it Up Pt 1 is good. 2.5 ⭐️

no sir. I just dont like punk. It's still better than The Rolling Stones.

Mitza skitza

Punk album. Ok not really my scene

2/5. This is a very weird album, it's hard to pinpoint the vibe. I like the energy and the creativity but there are not really many songs on here that I remember during its runtime. It was punk but just not sure to feel about it. It wasn't bad... I think? It's not as memorable as I was hoping but I did enjoy some of the songs. Best Song: Smash It Up, Love Song, Looking At You

I just can’t be happy today is my fave so far. Can’t say this is my jam but I can appreciate it. Anti-pope vibes with me.

Damned irritating.

Brit punk. Again. It's fine.

I really didn’t realize how bloated this genre was. There are so many albums on this list with music that sounds pretty much identical to this. 3/10

This was just kind of boring. Not even notably bad in the way punk can be. Is punk opposed to hooks? I know, sell out or whatever, but I need at least a bit from the artist for me to want to keep listening.

This music is too bland to deserve a band name as cool as The Damned. I've discovered a distinct dislike for early UK punk from this exercise and I'm sticking to it. Despite my snark, the music was fine.

This sounds like it could’ve came out of some noodling and recording in a garage. Nothing spectacular here that I’ve found.

I get that the damned were an influential punk rock band, but listening to this through a modern lens is pretty lame. It’s essentially the first pop punk album. Lazy songwriting that feels more like an appeal to the general masses disguised as punk rock than it does like genuine punk. There’s nothing here that pulls me in the way some other classic punk rock records do. I’ll put this on the pile of garbage brit-punk just barely above the clash and the sex pistols. I’ll stick with wire, the UK subs, and the dickies.

I found this pretty unremarkable and I don’t have much to say about it. The general vibe is very boyish. It’s repetitive and simplistic. “Smash It Up” was my favorite track, mostly part 1. Will not listen again. 4/10

I've never really liked the Damned, writing them off as pop-punk, too polished, too successful. Although this wasn't awful, there was nothing here to change my opinion I'm afraid. 2 stars.

Love Song // Smash It Up

🎧2 might be harsh, but this punk album just doesn’t cut the mustard. It’s like if the Buzzcocks or The Fall were less interesting and fun, and kinda shitty instead.

still allergic to too much punk

01) Love Song - 6,5 02) Machine Gun Etiquette - 5,5 03) I Just Can't Be Happy Today - 5,5 04) Melody Lee - 6,0 05) Anti-Pope - 5,0 06) These Hands - 6,0 07) Plan 9 Channel 7 - 5,0 08) Noise, Noise, Noise - 5,5 09) Looking at You- 5,0 10) Liar - 5,5 11) Smash It Up - Pts. 1&2 - 6,0 TOTAL: 5,59 (56/100) Current ranking: 302/351

Interesting album. Starts out straight punk but often veers into pop, rock, and even psychiatric. There are even keyboards! I don’t hate it, but I wouldn’t choose to listen to this again.

It's decent but very un-memorable

i did not like it

Another British punk band that tried to expand a bit into other areas. Didn't go well.

frankly boring

But strange Idk Alright

By no means a super fan. But, one of the punk bands from that time that I do kind of enjoy.

These punk albums all sound a bit the same, don’t they?

Favorite track: looking at you other picks: love song, i just can't be happy today

While some of the more melodic parts did appeal to me, I find this music too noisy overall.

Certainly seems like part of the bridge to punk. Not exactly my jam, but I respect it.

Yay, 70s noise rock. Just my fav.

Didn’t do much for me. Quite flat. Of it’s time I guess.

Altogether monotonous. Too much noise happening at the same time in most tracks. Favorite song: Plan 9 Channel 7

Its got a couple of good tracks. 'Smash it up' is a ripper

British punk rock that had a decent sound to finish the 70's

Other bands do this sound better.

I almost gave up after the first 2 songs and rated this a 1, but there was moderate improvement throughout the album to turn it from unlistenable to barely tolerable.

Better than expected for me but then I had low expectations. 2.5

Hmm. A little too British punk. Is that a thing?

Didn't finish it

Ok. Punky rock. Better than I thought it would be

Not as bad as I expected, but still didn't like it.

# 244 : I can listen to it, but I'm not sure it's all its cracked up to be. I liked : Anti-Pope

Not great.

STANDOUTS: I Just Can't Be Happy Today Anti-Pope OVERALL: 1.5/5; it sounds like it was recorded in someone's parent's garage. Punk rock—unsurprisingly NOT for me.
