Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Not that fun for me.
I like the tone of the lyrics better than most punk albums. The music is also way more interesting but I still can’t get over the singing style.
That's not so good, Al.
It started off well. Really loose, thrashy punk. Then it kind of morphed into the kind of stuff that Jeremy Clarkson would put on his “Powwwwwwer Driiiive” playlist. Lots of guitar wankery. Meh.
This album starts off ok.....and then just becomes annoying af about halfway through
I generally dislike punk but being that these guys actually try to play their instruments it was a lot more tolerable than a lot of the other bands in this genre that I’ve been subjected to . Too bad the recording/mix sucks, I wouldn’t listen to it again
FAVO: These hands
Enjoyed it! Has some good songs
Just not my jam.
No, this is music for someone else, but it's not for me. The tracks Liar and Smash it Up Part 1 were good (Part 2 was back to me being excited for the album to end.)
pass
pretty indifferent on this one. its alright
Decent early punk. They laid the ground work for others to improve.
Didn’t excite me
2/5. It was music. Some okay, most not. A poor example of punk tbh
Not my genre. Probably good for the genre.
eh
I'm not a super big fan of the punk genre, and this feeling continues as I listen to this album. It's not completely terrible, but definitely not something I would seek out.
Lots of noise. Some nicer noises than other. Right when you think you’re getting into it. It sounds like someone’s thrown the drum kit off the top of a multi-storey car park! Which takes you right back to twitching unexpectedly 2.0
This project has done a number on my opinion of punk rock in general. This album did very little for me until the pretty fun final song. Best song: Smash It Up

Not my kind of listen. Not my favorite kind of rock. Mostly skips.
They really front-loaded this. The first three tracks are fun, but the rest is a bit heavy for me - over-blown rock with tepid singing. Judging by this, Punk WAS Dead by this point. Smash It Up ends this on something of a high, albeit a slightly juvenile one. Bring back Brian James, I say.
This was a right old racket tbh. It was a very confused listen with too much going on. I only made it to the end because of the brevity.
The year was 1979. . . Never listened to this before. . . It is punk from Britain in the late 1970s, so yeah, not the best musicianship. Mostly fast beats and aggression and so much angst. Funny that there are guitar solos though, in contrast to the pistols or Ramones. . . Anti Pope is a good track. . . I just don't have any emotional connection to this music. It triggers nothing in me. no nostalgia. No current connection. I find it kind of boring and ugly. It is not challenging or provoking either. Just noise made unrighteously.
Meh, it’s not for me. I liked ‘Melody Lee’ the most, but wouldn’t listen again.
I don’t think I had ever heard of The Damned. This frenetic-paced variety of punk wears me out. I guess it might have been fun in a dance club in my 20s … but right now I am feeling pretty sure I will never listen again. Can see why it’s influential, but not working for me now.
Ah, another of those historically interesting but then just a bit boring punk albums!
Meio acelerado, meio alegre e depois completamente esquecido.
I love Dave Vanian. But a lot of this feels noisy in an indistinct/aimless way. Doesn’t hold my attention. Favorite part: the laughing on These Hands.
this album reminds me why I don't really like punk
Quite fun. Got about halfway through but won't be coming back to it
New wave, punkrock, høj energi, masser af elguitar, kondenseret
Def seems ahead of it’s time but that doesn’t mean I like it
Wasn’t a huge fan, another basic punk album that didn’t feel like it had any flavor
Another day another punk album :/
Genres: Punk rock, proto-hardcore, neo-psychedelia Formed: London, England in 1976 Run time: 11 songs, 36 min, 51 sec The third studio album by the Damned. It is the first album after returning with a new lineup. Track 1, “Love Song” is a simple declaration of love. It’s not the most hard edged song to start a punk album off . Track 2, “Machine Gun Etiquette" is a good straightforward punk song. I’m not sure about the title's reference to Machine Gun Etiquette? The line "second time around" is said a number of times throughout the song, presumably referring to their return with a new lineup. This to me would have been a better opening track. Track 5, “Anti-Pope” is a good old dig at those who attend church once a week, with the hope of improving their lives. Track 8, “Noise, Noise, Noise” is a celebration of noise (presumably how others refer to punk). They reply that music is for zeros. What others call music, is listened to by losers. Track 10, “Liar” is about being deceitful and wanting to be the best liar in the world. It is at this point that stealing lies from politicians is mentioned. They are after all the best liars in the world. The tracks “Smash It Up (Part 1)" and "Smash It Up (Part 2)" are about wanting to destroy the establishment, how the establishment views the youth of the day and how that makes them feel. It is a proper punk song, reflecting on the punk genre. Spotify: Least popular song: almost 375k plays Most popular song: over 5M plays. The lyrics are quite simple, but generally delivered with a bit of punch. The band have clearly come from a punk background, but seem to be adapting and moving forward. They are still sticking it to “the Man” but there is nothing outlandish or majorly offensive that would prevent them from airplay on popular radio. I can’t see their fans being happy with this album. It’s a bit punk, but not enough to count. Vanilla is probably the best way to describe it. Listen Again?: No My Rating: **
Too much speed and noise
The Neat Neat Neat Band - A fun short punk album that's not so much my sound. Standouts in Love Song, Machine Gun Etiquette and Anti-Pope.
Probably wouldn’t listen again
I'm not going to like this Low 2
This album was reallyyy weird. I liked how short it was because if it was any longer I would have gotten real sick real fast. The sounds in between were strange, but the actual music was pretty good.
Is this list just 1001 British Punk albums (that all suck to varying degrees)? Where's the American rock n roll, guvnah?
Again, British punk just isn't for me. And it feels like we are being over loaded with them. May just automatically give them all a 2
Ugh punk. My initial thought, but as I listened I found it to be alright! I think having more styles blended with the punk sound made it easier for me to listen. The instrumentals were good, and the more I listened, the more I liked it. I think this is as punk as I get haha. Any more disorganization and frenetic playing and screaming and I’m out. Listen again: maybe Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: Machine Gun Etiquette-has somewhat of a Motörhead sound to it! Worst Song
Trying to be Jim Morrison. They aren't 2.5
early British punk not as cool as the names suggest 2.5
I love the grimy and snarly nature of this music, but there weren’t many hooks that made me want to listen past that.
- Classic British punk rock sound - Singer has a dramatic voice - This era of punk just doesn’t really do it for me
Too loud for me
Drivevovo
What a punk album can be without any decent melodies
Maluccio
There are some interesting things on here but really, everything is done by their peers and progenies
Started out good then fizzled. 2.5
Aikakaudelleen tyypillistä metelipunkkia. En huomaa eroa kaikkien välillä ja tuntuu, et yllättävän moni genren levyistä tälle listalle on päässyt. Syytä googlaamatta voi vaan arvailla
I tried really hard to like this but it felt interminable to me. It does have an infectious energy to do it but I think I'd have to be in the middle of looting a shopping centre with a mob to fully appreciate it.
Not a fan
Punk rock, but musical. Not very good vocals, but medium enjoyable rock. Nothing as good as New Rose or Eloise.
Cool music. I didn't enjoy it that much. I probably would have loved it at the time!
Man I don't like punk. I can't pick up much from the songs and when I did I immediately forgot about it. After awhile it just sounds loud and directionless. I wouldn't rank it as low as what I ranked "Another Music in a Different Kitchen" by the Buzzcocks - this album at least had somewhat decent vocals. Highlights: -
Epic album name. Didn’t care for the music.
An earlier lighter punk album that really is not that great overall. Most of the songs are pretty lame. So many punk albums on this list. This probably makes it due to its early release but overall it isn’t much worth revisiting. 4.4/10
Not my fav
meh
This album exists. That's about all I have to say about it.
This is fine but nothing stands out to me as special or unique. It sounds like many other punk bands of the time.
Not even sure how to classify this music... but the singer is annoying and the music isn't great.
I was a bit disappointed in this as I liked what I heard of The Damned so far, though it was more gothic and less punk. Aside from Smash It Up which was a great song, everything else felt generic punk with not much substantial to hold onto.
Yet another punk record
More accessible than some of the other punk from this era with melodies and structure, but still nothing I want to listen to again.
Not to my taste.
For a band named The Damned, this band sounds more like a bunch of wussie angels flying high above in some celestial rainbow cloud where it never rains. I was really disappointed in this album. I'd heard a few of the Damned songs, over the years but wasn't really impressed with listening to an entire album. The Damned(?), more like a bait and switch. I call shenanigans!
Could this be classified as.. "Prog-Punk"? That technically makes no sense on paper, but then you listen to songs like "Plan 9 Channel 7" and "Smash It Up" which have a pretty distinct Pink Floyd inspired sound (they also had Nick Mason produce one of their albums). It works well in those two songs, but the rest is just a glob of very weird, yet extremely forgettable punk that doesn't know what it wants to do with itself. Okay so that's my opinion on the album, let's talk about what the hell that guy on the right is wearing.
As far as Punk goes this was much more accessible than most as the lead vocalist actually was singing and not screaming.
Nothin special
This type of English punk is very quickly becoming grouped in with what I was talking about on my tommy review: not bad but not very interesting or particularly personally enjoyable.
I’m sure its good, but after listening all day I am not won over yet.
It's convenient when an album all but screams the rating to you during every song.
Sounds like punk.
Enjoyable. But not much more than that.
Didn’t really get it too much, has some cool songs but I wasn’t able to really enjoy them 4.5/10
Detta varinte särskilt bra tyvärr.
Stereotypical early British punk sound. Was an interesting listen but not sure I would go for it again.
Honestly was not in the mood for this type of music, but I liked some of the songs : would give 2.5/5 or 2/5 due to that
Meh
22nd December 2021 Listened during the morning in LA before spending the day down on Huntington beach with guy. Not for me, sounds a bit like the early pop punk of the ramones and the sex pistols.
First Listen. Good quality punk. LIke to hear more.
Meh.
Seems like a perfect album for the time it was released. I'd be interested to know how much I would enjoy the album if this was one of the 10 albums I could own... Not a very consistent album, though.
Not bad, not bad
It's alright, nothing more
This reminds me quite a lot of English outfit The Clash, but I believe the Damned went in a direction I am not particularly enthousiastic about. I like Punk when it is highly energetic, with tight instrumentals and explosive engaging vocals. However, 7 tracks on this record have atrocious vocal mixing. I am getting very little energy from the instrumentals, I do not find the lyrics or theme interesting, I am confused by the style changes in some tracks (who decided These Hands should sound like a creepy Carnival tune with a solid minute of incredibly annoying laughter?) and getting bored from the repetitive rhythms and techniques. The only tracks worth listening too, Liar and Smash It Up, meet my expectations of classic Punk and I am very confused as to why the rest of the album is so different in instrumental/vocal quality. Overall I believe this deserves a 2/5.
2.8
An ok listen, nothing really too polarising on the album. Best: Machine Gun Etiquette, I Just Can't be Happy Today, Liar Worst: Melody Lee, Looking at You
Doesnt seem as 'surfy' as i remember their last one i listened to being. Very lo-fi, straight up punk most of the time.
this is my third time trying to listen to this, let's see if i make it past the second song this time. plan 9 channel 7 was the only song i kinda liked.
Couple of good tracks but doesn't make me want to keep listening
Noisy
pretty good.. fun... 2 stars
I dunno... just another punk album. Bad? Eh. Good? Neither...
classic punk not that interesting, not shit either just that, punk
Better than I thought for a punk album, still unbearable
Not for me, couldn’t get past the first few songs
A machine gun of noise. Unpleasant
Not feeling much...
I hate this. It doesn’t even sound like punk.
p444. 1979. 1 star. Comedy pub rock group get lucky during punk. Seriously, this isn't very good, and is that prog-rock worthy guitar wankage I can hear? Didn't like it at the time, don't like it now.
Nope
I appreciate their impact but their music aint for me, i didn’t listen to the whole thing, got bored
Only in 'Merica.
Apparently the drummer of this band is known as Rat Scabies. Says it all, really.
Love Song Smash It Up (Pts. 1 & 2)
Normally I'd rate something like this a 2 because it wasn't /that/ annoying to listen to but, hey, let's spice things up and try something new
In no way interesting.
Just not for me
Favorite Song: I Just Can't Be Happy Today Least Favorite Song: Liar Too loud, too messy, too much. I don't think I get the appeal unfortunately.
ehhh not really for me
Punk/hard rock group. Pass
Punk not for me
Moro moro :D Muuten ihan ok mut tää on punkkia.
Nothing stood out that much, not a fan of this kind of punk(?)
1. love - 1 2. gun - 1.5 3. happy - 1 4. melody - 1.5 5. pope - 1.5 6. handz - 1 7. plan - 1.5 8. noize - 1 9. looking - 1.5 10. liar - 1 11. zmazh - 1.5
Hit me with machine gun fire before making me listen to this again.
Noise, Noise, Noise. That about sums it up for me. Didn't like it.
I was expecting something harder from the title. Not too different from that last Who album I didn’t like.
This is just not my thing.
This isn’t for me.
Is this book sponsored by Punk music? I honestly do not get it. Didn't make it through the album.
Not for me
It’s a shame when a band that’s new to me has great bones (musicians, melodies, and songwriting) but belly flops with bizarre howls, studio effects, and general goofiness.
wow they’ve let me down recently
Did not enjoy
No thanks
Maybe punk rockers are so angry because they spend all their time listening to shitty music. I know I’d be a bit of a grump if I listened to shit like this all the time. I only had it on for 36 minutes or so and I’m already in a bad mood. Hey punk rockers, try listening to an actual album of actual music some time. You might find out that you aren’t so angry after all. 😘
I do not like punk rock. At all. 1
Truly awful
Too much noise
Didn’t finish listening. We thought very annoying.
Skränigt och jobbigt tbh.
Sounds like Ringo starr leading the Ramones. Every time I have to listen to these post punk albums I listen to a Kyle minogue album after because I know whoever picked these albums would just hate it.
Nope. All songs but one hurt my ears.
Not really for me and that’s okay
This album was quite the contradiction - somehow despite the high-octane energy and performances, I just felt so incredibly bored during this that I wouldn't want to sit through it again
I hated it, it’s just totally not my vibe. Way too noisy.
Not for me
???
Just a punk.
Terrible noise
Not for me
Not for me. However, the song title "Anti-Pope" did intrigue me, which eventually lead me to the 'antipope' Wikipedia article - quite interesting!
I can't bring myself to care about this one at all.
not sure if it was just because i listened to this first thing on a saturday morning but it hurt my head the repetitive bits were so jarring drilling in my fucking brain.
This isn't doing it for me... definitely have a strong sense of the 'sound' of the genre/era but honestly I'm just shrugging my way through it.
Nope.
During the first track I really thought "Hey, this is actually pretty good for punk. There's some structure and these guys at least know how to play their instruments. The vocals aren't completely atrocious either. Maybe this will get a 3 or something like that." Then I proceeded to skip all of the songs part-way through because they were so bad - searching for another somewhat decent song. These Hands was OK enough not to skip, but I didn't like it. Geez, I hate punk rock so much. I wasn't even fully aware of how much I hate punk rock before I started this thing.
Not my type off rock, very energetic tho Not good for driving hahah Not my thing at all
Listened to half the album this time but still turned it off. These are the best albums in history???? UGH!
Yeah... no. Not for me. 1/5 stars.
Not really my style!
