Supertramp fucks
Might be more known for their later albums, but this one ain't half bad, either. 4.5 bumped down to 4.
Pretty fun
4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/supertramp/crime-of-the-century/ I likey! For now a 4, but will definitely listen to this more often!
Revisited this album after many years of not hearing it. Very British. Kind of proggy. Kind of poppy. Slight menace which does help. I did like it. Title track is the highlight and a great album closer. I can see why people may not care for it but too each their own.
Funky in a good way. School is a great start to an album, and I really enjoy the last 20 mins of the album. Album flows well.
"bloody well right" and "Dreamer" are so good i've never heard of this album , some of these deserve a spot on 'sur la route'
Thought Supertramp was a punch line band but then I really listened... Love Breakfast in America obviously and was surprised to see that not listed and Crime of the Century in its place. Naturally, I was suspicious. But here's the thing, it's really good too. One of those 70s bands that knew how to sketch up an irrestiable composition.
Great songs with excellent orchestration. I definitely perfer Davies' songwriting and vocals to Hodgson's, and thus his songs were the highlights of this record. Standout Tracks: Bloody Well Right, Asylum, Rudy.
I enjoyed this!
Ked af at melde ud at it slaps, virkelig fed plade!
Sehr cooles Album!
Old school aber doch fresh
Almost every song on this is a banger honestly. Great production too, and lush theatrical instrumentation. Faves: School, Bloody Well Right, Hide In Your Shell, Dreamer
A great little prog rock album that is an enjoyable listen throughout.
Solid, I liked it but breakfast in America is better
Va det dårlig? Nei. Fikk æ mye mer lyst til å høre låta «Crime of the Century» av Shania Twain (fra debutalbumet for her i huset føkke vi bare med pre-1997 Shania Twain, takk)? Ja. Man har den smaken man har, ass.
Extremely unique and creative use of instruments
Pretty good! Very theatrical and long instrumental jams.
I didn’t realize Supertramp was a quasi-progressive band and this album was an enjoyable listen.
very rush sounding
I enjoyed this one!
A lot of fun! not great, but good Best Song: Crime of the Century Rating: 7.5/10 Stars: 4
Supertramp is criminally forgotten by most people. They had a number of forgettable albums but this one is just fantastic
Love Dreamer, though hasn't realised it was Supertramp! Was not so familiar with the other tracks, but I loved listening to this most 70s of albums...
Between this and Breakfast in America it's hard to escape Supertramp at hifi shows. That said, it's for good reason that these albums are used to show off audio equipment. Superb musicianship and songwriting and these album just seems to flow.
Has the popular screaming song that was trending on TikTok for a while and sounds haunting. Quite groovy album
Loved Dreamer
I was at a party that turned out to be a Sith party. I don't remember much now but Cobra was there and the Jedi were fighting both. Idk where G.I. Joe was
I absolutely loved this. The themes of alienation and loneliness and the exploration of fear of differences is so interesting and is explored through instrumentals and lyrics that perfectly match the theme. While listening to the title track I genuinely had a moment where I audibly said “this may be the best song I have ever heard”. The only album so far that I have immediately started again after first listen. Definitely one of, if not my favourite album on this journey yet. Wow
This album was actually excellent; yt men serving a lot of cunt for the sake or art.
Really, really awesome. It’s great to listen to this album start to finish, as most songs are quite long.
def relisten so good
A surprisingly great album
Listened to this while reading substack and didn’t even realise the album replayed itself three times, 8/10 would recommend as background music for any creative endeavours.
Intelligent music
I loved the drama of this album. It felt grandiose in its compositions. I loved the symphonic elements combined with the builds!
Kinda Elton Jenesis
Enjoyed this, very 70s. Not familiar with much Supertramp but could see myself investigating their back catalogue.
Original 70’s edm/rock
A fun 70s prog rock album that’s a fairly easy listen. Similar to the album I had yesterday from “Yes”.
omg sit ewigkeite nümme glost bin READY in school passiert SO VILL JAAA hmm ah bloody well right hanimi nümme möge erinnere und hans au so naja gfunde hide in your shell isch denn wieder ener mi gusto DREAAAAAMER vergesse wie goofy das lied isch hahaha omg crime of the century BANGER UND S KLAVIER würkli riese song zum schluss muss sege s album isch teilwiis chli seicht worde für mich? aber ellei su nostalgie via
Supertramp is criminally underrated. Musicianship is top notch and unique style with the different keyboard parts
Okayyyy I like it
Some interesting soundscapes to be had here, with hints of Prog. Very British overall, but very distinctively Supertramp. Dreamer is probably the most famous song here, also the most memorable. Definitely somewhat interesting.
Good, but pretty uninspiring, that title track rocks. Will return but not soon.
Dreamer is my favorite Supertramp song. There’s a bunch of other good ones on here. Not every one was amazing but a solid album.
Supertramp generally made so much diverse and different music. Awesome band.
Great album!
This was my first listen to an album by this group, although I had heard the one song, not on this album, which was played constantly on the radio. I liked this album, but I would not have called this album. rock and roll, maybe alternative rock, but not really rock and roll. Still, it was an enjoyable listen, and I would listen to it again. Best song: "Hide In Your Shell" and I didn't really have a song that I didn't like, but my least favorite was, "Crime Of The Century".
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would
Great piano, great horns, great voices, great vibes.
Bloody well right!! 4
What a day, a year, a life this is
trampalicious
I actually liked this more than most 70s AOR. It’s melodic, clever, and mostly avoids the indulgent prog nonsense I usually dread. It does get a little dramatic here and there but it is a solid, art-rocky listen that feels like the older, moodier cousin of Breakfast in America.
I thought Breakfast in America would have been the album to be on this list. Forgot that this album is the one with all of the bangers though. Dreamer and Bloody Well Right are great tunes. Thumbs up Supertramp
Always love a good prog rock album, especially a band that i have never really listened to other than a handful of songs. This scratched all of the itches that I was looking for in this album. Wasn't overly fantastic but still very good. Dreamers is the only song I knew going into this and it was probably the 4th or 5th best song after listening which is a good sign.
Surprised we got this over Breakfast in America but it still has jams. Might be able to hit a golf ball to where I saw Roger Hodgson play School, Hide in Your Shell, and Dreamer. Got pretty into Supertramp around then and for good reason. This band is just a pleasure. Not gonna blow anyone away but a sonically fun trip.
Smooth record all throughout. It was a pleasure to listen to this one. Favourite Track(s): Bloody Well Right, Rudy Least Favourite Track(s): Asylum
Genre: Progressive Rock One of rock and roll's most underrated gem makers, Supertramp, absolutely kicks ass all over this thing. The opener, "School", the prog pop classic "Bloody Well Right", the prog rock title track and closer, ending the album on one of the highest notes that mid-70s prog had to order. Wonderful vocals, as well as some really tremendous piano playing, paired with an impressively tight backing band, Supertramp's sound is clean, polished, and undeniably awesome. This isn't my all time fav of theirs, but it's pretty damn good. Don't arrange to have me sent to no asylum... 4/5
One of Princess Diana’s favorite bands 💔
I think that I used to believe that 'Supertramp' weren't a real band but were a pisstake? I just thought with a name like that, they didn't seem real. This album was great, although my streaming provider made it difficult to listen to the album in full and in order. I did get all of the tracks and I enjoyed it all, just good fun 70s-style rock music.
Gött sound och härligt old school sound. Supertramp ska in i min vinylsamling. En solid 4 från mig.
7/10… symphonic rock / *1974
Fun weird prog rock. Breakfast in America is the better album from Supertramp but I appreciate the excuse to listen to one I haven't heard as much. Dreamer isn't their best work.
I want to rate this five for Hide In Your Shell alone, Supertramp’s best song and one of my favorite songs in general. already in collection
Yesss
Very 70s but a good listen
A light four, the start of the 5 year run that would culminate in Breakfast in America. I can't help but have a soft spot for Supertramp. A fun pop band that knew how to write hits.
I hadn’t ever listened to supertramp. But this was fun!
Maybe the first ever prog rock album that I've actually enjoyed. Breaking news, making it catchy and memorable rather than noodly nonsense makes it much better.
Had a blast listening to this album, great prog rock. Favorite songs: Hide in Your Shell, Rudy and Crime of the Century 4/5 stars
Was not what I expected from Supertramp. Very much enjoyed their more bombastic rock side compared to their more well known late seventies superstar side. 4/ 5
Pop-Prog-Rock? Egal. Daher (zuviele) Nostalgiepunkte.
One of my favorite English groups from the 70s. My younger brother got me into this album. Had never heard of Supertramp before. At least five of the eight songs are bangers. My favorites are Bloody Well Right and Dreamer
Love their sound. The vocals, the arrangements, electric piano, guitar. It’s all working for me.
A really good album. It’s not breakfast in America which is my favorite by them. It has some great songs on it and feels very supertramp. This album came out when I was 7 years old. I’d never heard the whole album, just some highlights. They were a great piano driven rock group.
This was absolutely tootly lit. But the mix was kinda awful… not sure how to feel about that. But the songs are awesome I think this is the first supertramp album I’ve listened through all the way and it rocked big time.
Bloody alright I like to imagine an adult Gene Belcher rocking out on the keyboard for most of these songs.
Great album
Always thought the were a pop band. An intelligent pop band, but pop. I now understand they are actually progressive. Well I never.
Really enjoyed the energy, grooves and instrumentals on this album - the build & crescendos to some of the songs are very impactful, creating some mega high points. Dreamer & Rudy are absolutely faves from the album, both of which epitomise elements of why I love 70s rock / pop. There are some sections that don't leave as much of an impression though.
Really took me by surprise. I’ve heard of Supertramp but never listened to an album, and this was a great one to start with. In some ways, it’s about as quintessential 70’s psych / prog rock as it gets — almost to the point of satire at times. Alongside that, the vocals left me wanting a touch more when it’s just the male lead… HOWEVER, it was a fun listen and enjoyable through the end. I loved how it started off and ended with the harmonica as well to give a sense of cohesion.
Great grooves, intricate and studied songcraft, good and varied instrumentation. Overall really good cohesive album!
Great seventies rock.there are a few classics on this album (Bloody Well Right and Dreamer), but the rest is pretty solid with little filler.
Suoertramp are the forgotten huge band of the 1970s. Banger after banger in singles. Roger Hodgson has a stupendous voice and Rick Davies was a stupendous musician. Davies death this year reminded me just how much I enjoyed supertramp. I prefer breakfast in America but this is a worthy addition. The title track and closing number is great. And the singles were spectacular. 3.5
Cool prog rock album, much different than the Breakfast album that I knew. They have a handful of great tunes and a couple meh ones.
I am surprised by how much I am enjoying this. For now I am giving it a solid 4 stars, but will reconsider whether to award 5 after listening to the whole album start to finish with no interruptions or distractions. Thought it would be another Pink Floyd wannabe but I actually think they are less precocious and more listenable than PF - the album is a succinct and crisp delight. No skips whatsoever.
This is, I'm slightly ashamed to admit, my second ever Supertramp album I've listened to despite buying and enjoying Breakfast in America decades ago. I have a hype aversion problem. Anyway, it turns out Supertramp's breakthrough album really is that good. Better than Breakfast in America? Not sure. It's more varied, but none of the big hits hit as hard. Which is fine, because the other songs make up for it, and you still get that distinct melage of e-piano, synths, guitars, sax and orchestra. It's also really nice to hear Roger and Rick working together on songs, unlike later down the road. I feel like it's on the cusp of 4 and 5, so if you zig where I zag, full power to you. Tangent: if you'd played me an instrumental version of School, I would be tempted to think it was Genesis... until the sax solo. Favourite Song: Crime of the Century (or School, on a different day) Least Favourite: Hide in Your Shell Strong Bad Demerit Count: 0? I think?
Big Fan, kinda spooky/psychedelic in the best way. I like the use of the marimba on a couple of the tracks, I like a couple of other songs by Supertramp but I've never listened to one of their albums so I'm glad I got this chance
Banger album. Liked the funny sax on breakfast in america. Not really sure what that song's about though.
I like! I want to listen to more supertramp. My favorite of the day listening to like 10 albums.
Great album. Way better than I thought it would be. Album tracks are as good as the singles.
Liked it quite a bit, reminded me a bit of Pink Floyd, especially bloody well right
better than expected, very cute (weird lyrics)
This is some good prog. Great start to the album with School and Bloody Well Right - Dreamer and Crime of the Century are also brill. Can be a bit twee lyrically.
Fun listen. Love the book of sounds they used, especially the harmonica in the beginning. A little cheesy but in an endearing way.
People are haters! This is is fun!
Incredibly talented musicianship. Bloody Well Right is a fun track, and the second half of Rudy slaps.
This is a great album for me. Hide in Your Shell is a banger. It just barely misses 5 stars.
I really didn't know Supertramp had THIS much progressive rock in 'em. Pleasant surprise. 4.5 stars.
So Supertramp are the absolute epitomy of uncool, right? Never listened to a Supertramp album in my life. But I really like this. I'm reading in other reviews that `Breakfast in America' is better. But seeing as I hate The Logical Song then I formally endose this being on the list and not that.
Solid album. Many outstanding songs. Some forgettable.
underrated, poly kalo School Dreamer Rudy
DETTE E MITT STOPP!! EG GÅR AV HER!!🙏🙏🙏 Elske supertramp! School e jo bare dritkul med munnspill soloen, chrime of the century e så deilig dramatisk. Beste sang: School
Veelal lekkere nummers, paar uitschieters
Curto Supertramp. 4/5
Not as good as Breakfast in America for me but still a great one.
Really solid, good mix of prog and pop. First three tracks are strongest to me. Great production
3.5
Half the album was unavailable in yt music. It sounded nice
I rather enjoyed this! :)
It ain't no Breakfast in America, but it's getting close. Really solid album. "School" and "Bloody Well Right" are amazing to start off, then it kinda peters down a bit. "Asylum" kinda just drags for 6minutes, which interrupts a really nice listening flow. Anyone will recognize "Dreamer", and "Rudy" is a great deep cut. And it finishes strongly with the title track. It's a great album, but it doesn't keep it up throughout. Still, Supertramp remains underrated and deserves more acclaim in the sea of '70s classic rock artists.
Very good!
I mean, it was good. But I'm surprised that this album ended up on this the list rather than Breakfast in America. I just don't get it. But it was a good album nonetheless and enjoyed it. But I should also say it can sound a bit dated. It really is the 1970s in one album. But also has a little bit of influence from Pink Floyd and other rock artists/bands from the time, you could definitely tell. But other than that, it was good on its own and wasn't as weird as I thought it was gonna be. Favorite Tracks: School, Bloody Well Right, Hide In Your Shell, Dreamer, Rudy Rating: 4/5
This was much better than I expected. It legit had me rocking out at times. I like finding classic rock albums I actually end up enjoying, because usually I find them just annoying AF
My dad owned this album but I don’t remember hearing it as a kid. I really enjoyed the end of Ruby and the last track of the title track!
Fun album. Enjoyed it a lot. Never heard any of their stuff before.
This is the suburbs of prog rock. Does nothing wrong and makes sense and you get why it's popular, but it misses some of the highs and lows of more depth. That being said, it is still good.
I've never listened to a whole Supertramp record outside of their best of compilation, so it was a real treat to finally sit down and listen to hits like “Bloody Well Right” in the context of the album. “School” and “Dreamer” are other songs that stand out. I especially appreciate the band's use of dynamics on this record.
4.5/5
This is a solid 7/10 for me, but I’ll give it a 4 on here just for that Wurlitzer. Definitely a lot of great moments throughout the album, but like Rush’s albums, they lose me at times. Still a solid listen and lots to enjoy from it. Rick Davies passed away just under 3 weeks ago, so it’s only appropriate that I got to listen to my first Supertramp album now. I’m excited to listen to Breakfast in America. Also, I love the album cover of this one.
I grew up listening to Supertramp through my mother so this feels nostalgic. Its good music with an interesting use of instruments and the album includes one of my favorite songs Dreamer. As a whole it kind of lacks more great songs to me and most of them are fine to good but not much more.
I’ve always found Supertramp to be a bit obnoxious. After listening to a full album of them I’ve come to revise that position. Their singles are irritating as hell, but there’s some excellent stuff going on with the standard fare. The instrumentals are lush, and the tunes have a lot of the diversity I look for in these kinds of albums. There’s no over reliance on gimmicky synths. The songs are varied and full of drama. I’ve been too quick to judge them and I look forward to exploring this one some more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Quite impressive for a debut album ngl. The title track might be one of the most beautiful closers I've listened to in this list so far. Definitely don't sleep on this one
Crafted and accessible, I’ve enjoyed it and would return to it
I have this on vinyl and it might be my favorite by them.
Beat on Asylum was very cool. Reminded me of she's so heavy by the Beatles. Cool album that I had no issues listening to. Just wont be in my rotation.
Happy to see a Supertramp album as I’m familiar with several of their hits, mostly on the Breakfast In America album. Overall this is a sound/band I enjoy.
SuperChouette
Oh, this is terrific. I was only familiar with Supertramp's "The Logical Song" and "Dreamer" before, but this is full of juicy little surprises, unexpected moments, and yet doesn't drift away from being coherent songs.
Didn't have any of the Supertramp songs that I knew, but I enjoyed it none the less. Great song writing and I found myself really thinking it was recorded well.
I absolutely loved the album Breakfast in America. The only songs that I was familiar with from this album were Bloody Well Right and Dreamer. After listening to this album, I really did like it a lot, and think it could become a five star album for me after a while. Love the song, Asylum! For now, I’m going to call this four stars, and save it for future listening.
First time really listening to Supertramp, and I wasn't disappointed. Lovely 70s production and really dig the super tight drum sound. Favourite tracks: School, Bloody Well Right, Hide In Your Shell, Rudy, Crime Of The Century.
Love it
Sad to have this one on the day of Rick Davies' passing. I like these a lot. No stand out hits like on other Supertramp records, but this is just a genre I really enjoy. Cheesy but goes to fun places and puts me in a good mood. 4
Enjoyed this, experimental but hooks are there too. Production is lush and rewards repeat listens. Signature harmonica and wurlitzer are iconic and still pop today. Will listen to this again!
Really enjoyable album!
Super talented group, I’m surprised they didn’t have more of an impact. Great instrumentation, melodies, harmonies, and catchy songs.
7.5/10 Really solid album! Great from start to finish. Every song was way more interesting and complex than I was expecting.
Great but not what i need now
This is pretty strong, though a bit scattered. The instrumentation is great, but it lacks the cohesion that Breakfast in America has.
I love Supertramp. This is the epitome of the 70s sound imo.
I'd never heard this whole thing, other than the singles. I was entertained all the way through. It couldn't be more 70s if it tried, but it is fun and creative throughout.
great album from the start to finish
Bom álbum. Algumas músicas demoram para ficar boas.
This album is so great. I don't really understand the "prog" or "Pink Floyd" comparisons, but this is so much fun. Sometimes the songs go on a little long, but they are entertaining. This album REALLY understands song structure and building / giving a payoff. Loved it! This album is very 70s. Liked Songs: The entire album although "Bloody Well Right" and "Crime Of The Century" were my least favorites.
Solid 4, lot of fun/cool stuff but a ton of similar slow burny vibes hurt it
Not Breakfast In America, but the album that captures Supertramp in the midst of their evolution from a prog band to a pop band. It’s something of a transitional album, making it perhaps their most interesting even if it’s not their best. Hodgson’s tunes, like “Dreamer”, lean more pop, while Davies’ songs like “Asylum” retain the prog explorations. But this is really the album where Supertramp came into their own, and as a mix of progressive, art pop, and arena rock - it’s a fun listen.
Pretty enjoyable album that doesn’t stand out too much when compared to other artists of the time. The best song/most notable song was the shortest. 7/10
Great tunes thx
Prog rock / pop album. I like how orchestral and epic it is at times. I enjoyed listening to this and it is pretty accessible as far as prog albums go, but I think it'll take a few more listens before it really clicks. Favorites: Dreamer (which I'd heard before), and Bloody Well Right.
2 hits I'd heard before. I really liked the transition into Rudy. Not sure why I like this so much more than Steely Dan. It's warmer I guess? 3.5 rounded to a 4.
sexy sexy psychedelic groovy ass 70s rock and i knew i'd love this one because who doesn't love supertramp
Such a distinctly Seventies albums, and one of the best Pop-Prog albums. Alas, Supertramp have been largely forgotten nowadays, but this is a fine introduction to them. (And a great album cover.)
Pretty good, got those "end of the night after everyone's left the pub" vibes. Dreamer is the big hit but hide in your shell and the closer crime of the century are good too.
4.5/5
Nice chill rock
Better than coldplay
Novedoso
School 3.6 Bloody Well Right 3.8 Hide in Your Shell 3.6 Asylum 3.5 Dreamer 3.7 Rudy 3.8 If Everyone Was Listening 3.8 Crime of the Century 3.9 Score: 3.7125
Good album! Very symphonic at times. 4/5
Mama
Good. Love the piano
This veers dangerously close to cheesy in a peculiar 70s way at times but overall I really like it. Lots of interesting touches and some top musicianship on display. I particularly noticed the bass - yay to Scotland’s own Dougie Thomson. A quirky 4 from me
Not sure if I like this or Pink Floyd more, my boy benny would rock with this sound
Catchy Floyd-lite.
I have rediscovered this band recently and it is a nice surprise.
Repeat. 4 stars
I always knew I liked Supertramp but hadn’t ever listened to an album of theirs. I liked this and would consider listening to it again.
37/1001 Supertramp - Crime of the Century Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ✅ This one hit the spot for me this morning and will be listening to it more. Proggy, poppy and basically just one rock opera. Yeah there are moments that don't quite hit, but very impressed with this nonetheless. I love the piano and sax solo at the end of the title track.
Over hated album. Definitely has its flops but the sound is defined and well made. 8/10
Loved this album, exactly what I needed. Not quite a 5.
"Crime of the Century" is the third studio album by English rock band Supertramp. Art rock, progressive rock and pop are the Wiki-listed genres. Yeah, that works. It was their first album to feature Bob Siebenberg (drums, percussion), John Helliwell (saxophone, clarinet, vocals), Dougie Thomson (bass) and Ken Scott as producer. The remaining core members were Rick Davies (vocals, keyboards, harmonica) and Roger Hodgson (vocals, guitar, piano). The album was their commercial breakthrough reaching #4 in the UK and #38 in the US. A faint harmonica opens the album and "School." Hodgson's vocals come in as well as a girl's scream which starts the beat. A guitar and organ. Dreamy, prog and even jazzy. A song about Hodgson's experiences at school. A good start. This rolls right into "Bloody Well Right." A drum roll, jazzy piano and Davies on vocals this time who answers the previous song by yelling "schooling is phony." A song questioning the education system. Handclaps and a sax end. A real good deeper cut is "Asylum." Davies on lead vocals with piano and builds with the drums. Dramatic, strings are added. This song reminded me of King Crimson. Roger Hodgson wrote the lone single "Dreamer" when he was 19 on a Wurlitzer piano. The one song you could put in the pop category. Davies answers and echoes Hodgson as the song climaxes. The self-titled "Crime of the Century" closes the album. Davies with demonstrative vocals. Layered guitars, piano, sax and more strings. Another good song. The music on this album fits into several categories: prog, jazzy, pop and even baroque. The songs builds with the drums, additional instruments and volume. Most songs are piano led. Hodgson and Davies have heartfelt vocals and when together, echo or/and answer each other. The song order does that too with the combination of songs being the opposite of the other (at least on the first side). That is quite clever. This is a solid album with really no fillers and one I do recommend going back to for a listen.
Really good album
C’était vraiment très très cool. À réécouter
Coming in knowing nothing about this band other than the name it's mindblowing, a stadium band in the same hemisphere as Queen? Love it, will listen again when I need the feels good man!
Classic
So what is this? Prog pop? I'm surprised. I was expecting a below average to average album. This is somewhere around a 4. It's interesting how a lot of the reviews mention who Supertramp sound like, and there's quite a variety. For me it started at Pink Floyd, then Elton John, maybe a little Rush, and finally Genesis. Only not quite as good as any of those.
Had some catchy tunes, occasionally over the top as a prog rock album will be. I enjoyed it probably more than I should have. Could be because I was on a 3 hour drive to Chicago and had just listened to Bjork and Timberlake. Definitely listening to a dead concert on the 3 hour drive home.
I really do need to listen to this one again
2 listens, prog bro!!!
Supertramp is always fun!
I’m not sure that this is a good album but it’s a perfect trap album for me. Hints of prog rock but not an onslaught to the ears and kind of silly. Not every album needs to be Pulitzer worthy. This was good fun and a perfect album to mow the lawn to, which I was doing.
Really liked this, sound a lot like Elton John to my ears
good
I enjoyed this album. Good soundscapes and catchy chorus.
I feared the worst, given my track record with 70s prog rock (and prog rock adjacent stuff) has been patchy at best. But I was already really liking this at least partially due to it being pretty keyboard/piano heavy. Then Dreamer started. I have rambled on a lot about my Dad during many of the 70s albums on this list, and this is another opportunity. He loved this song. The absolute wave of nostalgia hearing this for the first time in probably 25 years made me a bit misty-eyed on my walk to work. When I started this thing, I wasn't expecting to have days where the album just really, really made me miss my Dad. He would have enjoyed the idea of this project, because he genuinely loved music, though I'm sure would have despaired at some of my ratings (Pink Floyd always worth 5 stars to him). It made me feel feelings (and listen to Breakfast In America later in the day). 4/5
Prog is best when infused with other genres, and Supertramp is a great example
Going into this album knowing only "The Logical Song", I had my reserves. However... Never did I expect to listen to an actually really good prog rock album with a lot of symphonic elements. Great songs, great listen. I have to learn more about early Supertramp. 4/5
supertramp isch wiedermal herzensahglegeheit <3 «school», «dreamer» & «crime of the century» (s'lied) sind fantastisch, de rest isch guet – wobi «school» speziell hervorghobe werde muess (was 1 song!!) de richter hertzog bewertet das kriminaldelikt mit 4 hammerschläg und haut es «ruhe im gerichtssaal» use
Very fun album, sounds like something that would play in a 70s discotheque
167/1089 - Bloody Well Right was cool. Some parts kinda feel almost like Boston or Chicago which I'm not a huge fan of, the bands not the cities. I enjoyed my visits in Boston and Chicago. Overall, this was above average. I'll listen to "Breakfast in America" sometime in the future. I listened to "Breakfast in America" too. Damn, 1979 was a great year for music. The Police, The Clash, Toto, Michael Jackson, Music for Airports, etc. I wish this one was on the list too, I'd give it 5 stars.
This was great. Fantastic use of stereo too.
very epic sounding, but I was too hungover to fully grasp it
Not my usual type of music, but a pleasant surprise.
Good
The older I get the more I lean in to how much I appreciate Supertramp. There is a lot of levity, super proficient musicianship, theatrical energy and delightful melodies. I wont praise this album too too much because I'm sure there is other albums that better represent the band as a whole. I'll keep at it.
Some brilliant songs and an original sound that no other band has ever really recreated. Some songs are forgettable though.
had some Strange British moments but i liked it sure
Whatever they call this - prog rock, or art rock, or anything else - it's good and it takes me to a happy place. Oh, to be 18 again...
Super tight, satisfying and very clear mastering. Prog elements, but also very structured and melodic. Very depressing lyrics and tone. Keyboard solos are my favourite part, sax parts. Drums are so clear and tie it all together. Only downside is that it could've been a little more experimental; a little more risky.
Definitely feels like a classic
I've never gone out of my way to listen to Supertramp before, and I regret it! This album is fantastic. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. Lots of great tracks on this album, especially the closing track with an epic instrumental lush with saxophone, piano, and drums. I'll listen to this many more times to come.
Great opening, album felt like a proper musical journey from epic to more relaxed songs like Crime of The Century. Not every song was for me but appreciated the whole album nonetheless
I love Supertramp, their happy/theatrical sound & some of their most important songs are on this record.
Beste album van Supertramp. 4.2
Mate... this is what I needed, a banging album
For those of my generation, Supertramp is like Electric Light Orchestra and The Alan Parsons Project. You think each group had just a few hits but when presented with a greatest hits album you’re pleasantly surprised to realize they each had quite a few. This group wasn’t on my high school group’s radar, since they didn’t have hits until 1974 (post high school) on this, their third album — in fact their first two albums are not streaming. Breakfast in America is a better album of theirs (sadly, today’s is the only one of theirs in the 1,001), but this is pretty good. Two FM radio staples and a number of other tasty tracks. Makes me want to listen to more of them.
There are too many albums of this genre and decade on this list. But I'm glad this album is one of em. What a neat discovery for me! Each of the tracks stood out, and I liked them all. By the second listen I was singing along.
85% Best: School; Bloody Well Right; Rudy; Crime of the Century Must-Hear? Sure
Bom álbum. Algumas músicas são excelentes. Moondrop May.
Quite liked this, kinda like a proggy 10cc. Will definitely be coming back to this!
No note. Just classic tunes
It was pretty good. Kinda let it play in the background because it has some great instrument solos
I always confuse Supertramp with Supergrass. That’s on my though because sometimes one of me few brain cells goes to sleep. This was a fun album though, and it enjoyable from front to back. Supertramp have a style that seems hard to find in any other bands, toeing into prog just enough to be wacky, but never far enough to get real weird with it. This is a pleasant, fun album, and Dreamer is sand very frequently in our home.
Witty
Enjoyed it.
great album!
I like it
88/100. A great art rock album with jazzy undertones. The atmosphere and overall vibe are captivating, unique yet oddly familiar. It's a distinctive record that really leaves an impression.
Prog for people who don't like to be challenged. I still thought it was alright. Not everything has to push you. 7.5 out of 10. So I'll have to round it up to 4.
This was actually quite good. I’ve listened to very little supertramp but I quite enjoyed this. Very Pink Floyd which wasn’t what I was expecting
classic good rock. Supertramp gets the panties!
Fantastic. 4.5
Amazing as just a straight up vibes album. Could listen to this on repeat for hours.
I should likely own this. Likely will pick it. Not my thing normally, but its cultural impact is unmistakable.
The sax fill in Hide in Your Shell kinda sounds like who can it be now by Men at Work Hearing the piano breaks always brings a smile to my face, wish we could get Breakfast in America soon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jspCAfZeDqc
Love it. Great song.
Enjoyed the album and many of the songs.
I had never heard of this group or album, so far as I can remember, but I’ve heard the song “Dreamer” in commercials. It’s not a bad song, but it’s not even one of the best here. There is a Pink Floyd influence without imitation, but also more of a grinding, melodious element. Pleasant surprise here.
Lord what an album. How odd and spacey and fun. Technically high-level without being a dick about it. Supertramp in the morning is a rad way to kick off a week.
Pretty good album, it took several songs to get used to it but overall a memorable prog rock entry I hadn't listened to before. Notable tracks that stood out to me were Asylum for the stage show feeling presentation, Rudy had elements that felt ahead of its time, and the title track felt like something I should hear on the radio more but don't. I enjoyed it, but I don't know if it will be in my constant rotation.
Christgau in Village Voice memorably described Supertramp as ’Queen without the preen’, which is cute but not quite right. Supertramp have much more respect for the values of a good straightforward pop rock song, and are only proggy in that they can actually play their instruments. There’s not too much of the baroque or excessive on this album, it’s mostly just classic early seventies pop rock. It was the decision to turn their back decidedly on prog in favour of pop for this very album which saved the band from obscurity. Good pop song writing, musical ability and some decent originality in arrangements combine to make this album more than just a throwaway pop release but an album which combines commercial appeal with genuine creativity.
Great stuff. Surprised by the Pink Floyd vibes
Enjoyed this, it felt creative although similar to other prog rock. A few overindulgent aspects but overall enjoyed.
Supertramp have a lot of songs I know and enjoy, though they seem to be spread among albums. The intro to School is pretty great. Dreamer is a classic. Bloody Well Right is fun! Good to hear some Sax. The electronic vibes throughout add a different dimension to their music, too. Album is very good.
Good album, really liked the first 3 songs. Fun use of dynamics in Asylum, like someone in the booth is turning down the volume knob. Dreamer is kind of annoying to listen to. Rest of the album is ok, title track is a little boring but I like the reprise of the harmonica from the first track school.
Enjoyable 70s prog rock time capsule, has aged well
I genuinely liked this album more than I thought I would. Closer to ELO than ELP.
I wasnt in the mood for this but it won my respect for being a big grand sound
Good album all the way through. Classic 70s rock.
There's not a ton of progressive rock on this list, so I was happy to see this one come up. This is a nice album, very atmospheric in sound. I was already familiar with some tracks, but I enjoyed all of them. I would listen again.
I enjoyed this. The songs were a little samey and it sounds a little dated but a lot of these songs had a great vibe to them and there’s no bad songs.
eig ganz geiles Album chillig und unique fav track -Hide in your shell
Valeur sûre
Just my kinda thing. I can see it being annoying for some people, but this is what I hope from a prog album.
Oooh, I’m having fun so far! It’s impressive! The style is so cool, and not something I’ve really listened all that much to before. I feel like I can hear a mesh of different styles and influences; I can pick out some Beatles influence, but it also sounds very modern for 1974. Almost akin to The Police, perhaps. I wasn’t even aware people were making music like this in the early 70s!! Really easy to listen to. I’m having a ton of fun with it so far. Almost soothing to my ears, as my head has been hurting so much for the past little while before putting this record on. Excited to see where the rest of it goes, on Asylum now. :)) A bit of the way through Rudy now, and I can definitely see myself going back to listen through this entire album again in the future!! I think I understand what prog rock is now lol. Ooh okay, I’m REALLY, really liking this album, which is not surprising, per se, but is a pleasant and exciting treat. Okay! All right! Very, very enjoyable album!! A solid 4 stars for me! :) Also sort of introduced me to a new subgenre that I wasn’t necessarily all that aware of/familiar with.
Prog-rock that is great with headphones. I was familiar with “Bloody Well Right” and “Dreamer” from the radio, but giving these songs (and the album) full attention made me like them even more. I like how the two singers alternate tracks. The Wurlitzer is featured heavily and I love how these songs always take a different, interesting direction.
Oikein hyvä!
Quirky weird 70s
did not like this. theater kid ass music. i didn’t have high expectations but i do like “goodbye stranger” so i went in hoping there would be at least something enjoyable on here but everything was too shmaltzy (especially the saxophone-heavy songs) and just not that interesting.
Good hot tub music
Big jamming
It would probably grow on me. I will listen to it more in future
I thought this album artwork said 'Supertrump' at first. 😆 Pretty fun album!
I sometimes wonder why they didn’t do better in America. W mean we were fine with other British bands, the Beatles, the Stones etc. I think it’s because the others didn’t use phrases like “Bloody well right” which brings out our inherent xenophobia. I give it a four. Three for the music and one for the nostalgia
I always like a piano-centric record, and this album stands out in that regard. If Everyone Was Listening sounds straight out of an Elton John compilation. The title/final track introduces the heartbreaker combo of high piano, high strings, high sax, and slow 6/8 time. It's a great way to end the album on a grand "impending-doom" note, though it would be significantly better with an actual ending rather than a fade-out. There are also a few mildly suspect tracks that could reasonably be described as filler - most notably Dreamer, which is more of a silly novelty track. One of the singers' voices is pretty goofy. It's most noticeable in Dreamer during the solo vocals. Sounds a bit like the higher range of early-career David Bowie. The backing vocals give an extremely retro feel (almost like something you'd hear from the Four Seasons) that really creates an odd feel, because the instruments heavily imply a mid-70s sound. That being said, the music itself is excellent. A solid combination of multi-part prog, 60s rock, and groovy modern blues. One of the best examples of the latter genre is Bloody Well Right, which is instantly likeable. The keys are the highlight. I love the gritty, positive classic rock feel in that track. 4/5 Key tracks: School, Bloody Well Right, Crime Of The Century
Great piano based bangers
This is a fun one
This is great. Going in the rotation
This will be good to listen to. Considering "Breakfast in America" was a great album to listen to with Dad growing up, I am looking forward to this. Opens with school: Classic harmonica from this band. Really love how the bass drops after that slow intro. Bloody well right: I thought that this was on "Breakfast in America" but it's a great song nonetheless. Distorted guitar work is solid. There's also a lil hard rock vibe thrown in there (similar to bad company). Dreamer: Absolute classic banger. There's even a little Pink Floyd in Crime of the Century. Was this revolutionary when it came out? What an album! - 5 stars.
I very much so enjoyed this, the opening track was awesome and even gave me a fright because my headphones were so loud haha. “asylum” and “if everyone was listening” are other highlights for me
Surprisingly great. Proggy, punky in places, with a great range of tones and timbers, and only occasionally lapsing into parody (the theremin on track 3 was a bit much). Possibly lacking in memorable tunes, but a fun listen. A high 3/low 4, pushed into 4 because "Bloody well right" was too fun.
I wasn’t familiar with this group, and I actually liked their sound a lot. Very groovy, blues-y when they wanted to be, and even quite dramatic at times. This album had relatively few tracks for its listening time, and they definitely make you work for it as you listen, since there are lots of lulls and random rises back to volume. It felt very mysterious, and even after two and a half full listens I still felt like some songs were beyond my comprehension.
Great classic rock album for a drive or relaxing.
OH MY GOSH “Asylum”???? CAN WE TALK ABOUT THAT BRIDGE?!?! genuinely AMAZING instrumentals, their music is so passionate and emotional and loud and impactful and perfect. not a lot else to say other than i really liked this album. one goofy ahh song TOTAL. 4/5.
Very surprising! Liked this one quite a bit.
Quite a mix of genres on this one, the whole 70s are contained on a single album apparently. There are pop, prog, rock and art elements on here. Not sure I if listened to something like this before. Despite the interesting and changing song structures, this album can't be categorized as pure prog rock, at least in my opinion. There are way more elements of pop on here. Maybe progressive pop? Nevertheless, this is a really fun album to listen to, you never know what's coming next. There are great melodies throughtout, on piano, guitar, but also on winds for example. The album features two different singers, which makes the songs even more unexpected and different. This is a quality album, it's really well done, the production is good, nothing is overly aggressive. Everything is polished, from the music itself, to the mix. I just have to mention that harmonica into, it's one of the best album intros I've heard. A pretty cool album. Wasn't sure if I wanted to give it a 3 or 4. This could be one of the best pop albums I ever heard, just for the sheer musicianship and craftsmanship. Giving it a 4 for that.
Pretty good, didn’t sound like a basic rock album
mmm
I like. Slightly soulful funky rock, a bit heavy on the organ and slightly… dated? If that’s the word.
My AM radio childhood is all coming back to me. No complaints--these are classic tunes. Also a good reminder of what an epic tune Crime of the Century is.
Excellent discovery 😁
this has that 70s sauce. great jams listening to more supertramp now
This is what the sex pistols were complaining about. It's awesome.
Lite Pink Floyd-vibe?
Yes. This was great. Amazing ending to a really solid album. Loved it.
I really like this album, it's a fun listen and the sound has that 70's charm that I have a soft spot for. Another important thing is it felt cohesive. Definitely not for everyone though, you kind of just have to like this type of music and sound.
i'm having an absolute blast rediscovering this album
English 70s rock. Commercial breakthrough. Very pleasant opo rock, upbeat. Sound a bit like Elton.
I really loved the three hits "School", "Bloody Well Right" and "Dreamer" right from the start. To get used to the rest of the album I needed a few runs. But unfortunately for me there are still a few weaker moments. (screaming on "Asylum", "Rudi"... , "If Everyone Was Listening", "Crime Of The Century") 3,5
Haven't heard of this band before, gave me ELO vibes, which I did enjoy.
