Great album…
Ah yes the music of bell bottoms, pretty guitars and many drugs. The string orchestra is a nice touch
C’était super en vrai, je n’étais pas familière avec supertramp excepté certaines chansons, mais c’était totalement différent de ce que j’attendais j’aime bien
It was pretty good. Older than what I usually listen to
welcome son of The Who and Pink Floyd
This is an album that's worth a few listens. I really like how they shift gears through the songs. Lots of great builds and changes. Sometimes grooving with the sax and keys, other times the drums and guitars kick in and take the front. Really great interplay between the instruments. The songs don't really grab my ear in an instant catchy way, but this is music that I can give several listens and discover new things. I like it more each time I listen to it. Especially liked Hide in Your Shell and Crime of the Century.
My only knowledge of Supertramp is Breakfast In America, and specifically The Logical Song and Goodbye Stranger…two songs so wildly overplayed on classic rock radio that I have absolutely no interest in listening to either of them ever again. This was a refreshing listen as I don’t know any of these songs, so I’m approaching it as if Supertramp is a band that I’ve never heard before. These songs meander a bit, and usually start off unsure of where they want to go. Otherwise, the instrumentation is amazing, the singing is emotive and passionate at times, and ultimately the drama of the song structures makes it worth coming back to. Another bonus point is that it was released a week after I was born, so we are nearly the exact same age. I like this!
I'm a big fan of Supertramp's hits, so I was excited to hear a whole album of theirs, especially one with lesser known songs. I enjoyed it! Their lyrics are great, and the instrumentation and compositions were creative and fun.
My dad is a huge Supertramp fan, so I might be biased but I thought this was GREAT. They're such a dramatic band in the best way. Jam band-y but not in an obnoxious or indulgent way. Also a cool album cover. Bloody Well Right, Dreamer & If Everyone Was Listening were the standouts for me. A 4 only because the hits off of Breakfast in America are even better!
I think I knew 3 of the songs but I'd never listened to the entire album. It was better than I expected. Not quite prog rock, but also not the lightweight music I was expecting. It reminded me of Peter Gabriel era Genesis. Some of the theatrical feel was there. I especially liked the title track.
I don't think I've ever heard these songs before, but I liked the album more each time I played it today. The last song was the highlight for me. What a cool groove to end on and the horn parts sounded cool!
I don't have much to say, this was just really nice to listen to. Why better than I expected given the album cover and band name. 4/5

Really good prog album. Enjoyed it a lot. 4 stars
Man everything about this was super solid. Beyond the normal use of solid to mean good. Like it felt sturdy. The bass thumped, and the grooves kept moving forward. I really liked this. It wasn't quite my flavor, but if the mood hit right, this could be a 5 star. Album Cover: (A) Space jail. Hell yeah.
Pretty cool album, I found it generally pleasant. It didn't blow me away at any point but it was also pretty enjoyable the whole time. Very solid.
If Everyone Was Listening to this album, everything would be alright. And im Bloody Well Right about that.
Prog-y, saxophone-y goodness, oh yes sir. This was made for me
Not at all bad
I've heard the iconic chorus for 'Dreamer' before, but fairly sure this was my first time listening start-to-finish. 'Rudy' is a classic prog ballad, highlighting the band's ability to storytell through their songs. 'School' showcases their musical acumen, with its manic pacing and strong beat. Rating: Another 4-star 70s British album - long may they continue! Fav song: 'Bloody Well Right'. Added to playlist: 'Bloody Well Right'.
8/10 Favorite Tracks: Hide In Your Shell, If Everyone Was Listening Least Favorite Tracks: Bloody Well Right
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 8/10 Didn't know it, but I enjoyed listening to the album.
Didn't know what to expect when I went into this one, but I was so pleasantly surprised. This one is good, and that is no understatement.
Not the pop perfection they would later reach, but still a solid album with some fun songs on it.
Sits somewhere in the intersection of Steely Dan, Yes, ELO and bar rock, with their own unique spin. Some of these songs wander off in ways that feel like a whimper more than a bang, but when the songs hit, they HIT. “Bloody Well Right” and “Dreamer” are familiar, upbeat hits and rightfully so. But the rest of the first half is solid as well: “Hide in Your Shell” and “Asylum” bring the drama and dynamics to perfection. And there’s clarinet for days in “If Everyone Was Listening” that makes me swoon. I didn’t have time to look and see if this was a concept album but if it isn’t it’d make a hell of a musical. I’d go 3.5 if I could, but I’ll bump it up to a 4. There’s a lot to dig into here if I had more time.
first time I'm listening to an entire album by them and it still feels sort of weird to me. Like I almost like them really much and they're almost exactly my cup of tea, but then something is slightly off and it makes them simply OK instead of awesome. I like the ambitiousness of this album, which I didn't get as much of a sense of on the individual tracks I've heard by them.
This was maxied so well like woow. I think recording quality absolutely peaked in the 70s. About the album. Well this is a definitive one of the sound of the entire century and it's a solid one that's worth going back to I think.
-fav song: if everyone was listening -not sure abt least fav, the rest were ok but I don't think I would relisten to them -i really enjoyed if everyone was listening...will be relistening to that one!
Good stuff
Favorite Track: Bloody Well Right
One of those bands that I've never been completely sure who they were. I assumed American rather than British. Dreamer I knew, but I didn't know what else to expect. Solid prog influenced sound and a good set of songs. I liked this, though it's of its time and place, why not have a bit of dad rock.
I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed this - actually had this on repeat and I only knew Supertramp by their three biggest hits before listening to this. I'm not the biggest fan of the vocals, but it really worked with the desperation in some of the lyrics. I prefer this prog flavor of Supertramp, even with the pop piano and guitar flourishes. Favorites: "School", "Hide in your shell", and "Crime of the century." The title track is so timely and introspective, the sweeping melodies sound like a budding antihero growing out of the ashes, love it.
I don't have much to say, this was just really nice to listen to
I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Admittedly, I had definitely judged an album by its name (and the name of the band that produced it), but 4/5 would listen to it again.
i thought, what's the big deal, queen already did this & then looked at the release date
it made sense to me that Supertramp were biggest in Canada; there's something so hearty and melodic about their brand of prog that feels right for the area. i'm sure these songs aren't easy to play, but it honestly does make me want to sing along or play bass to it -- even if they aren't as cheery as the tracks i've heard off of Breakfast in America. honestly, a lot of the album sounds bitter and melancholic, like the feeling of a shrug and lean forward. you could call this a spiritual debut, but if you told me this was the band's last album, i'd believe you. it has that "I'm Not Marching Anymore Energy"; somehow, the band just got sunnier with each release.
Really enjoyed this album
This was very catchy - Dreamer I'm looking at you Was never really sure where this album was going. Lots of quiet, piano songs which led into louder parts with loads of instruments I enjoyed this album and was actually kind of sad when it ended 4 ⭐️
"Give a little biiiit, give a little bit of your looove to meeee" Okayyy fiiine, wrong album, but anyways this album is great stuff. And so catchy: "RIGHT, RIGHT, YOU'RE BLOODY WELL RIGHT". I love the use of piano on this album. The entire instrumental of the closing track goes so hard. Also they album cover is super cool. Somebody cooked here. Really I just love space-themed album covers in general. If you (the one reading this) ever make an album for the 1001 albums list, if you want to give me a good first impression, make it a space-themed cover :)
This was really pleasant and fun to listen to. I’ll be back
Excellent and a great recording. 4.5
fun
Really enjoyed this album. Only song I had ever heard off of it was Bloody Well Right, but highlights for me were School, Asylum, and Rudy.
I don't know jack about Supertramp. I sure didn't think they were a prog band. Something about their name had me expecting glam rock, I don't know. I didn't expect to enjoy it this much either.
Surprisingly enjoyable and fun album. Standout Tracks: - Dreamer - Hide in Your Shell
It's pretty good. Up my street, good beats. Second most popular album from Supertrump - 1974. Need to listen to 'Breakfast in America' 1979 too.
Enjoying thisone. A couple recognizable songs. Chance really enjoyed the harmonica
Fees like Styx
Enjoyed a lot, very 70s!
найс. напомнило пинк флойд и йес
Absolute classic. Loved it! Took me back to childhood years when Mum would listen to Supertramp in the car.
Zelo zanimiv
Pretty good, liked 4-5 songs
it's pretty good all the way, but never really fantastic. I like it, but I don't love it.
I'm not sure what I was expecting going into the album but it wasn't this. This is a great album! The playing, the lyrics, the album feels cohesive.
So these dudes are badass. My only complaint would be to incorporate more instrumentation. Theyre very heavy on the rhodes/wurlitzer thing which normally I love but a lil variety would have given the music more variety and tecture. The songwriting and arranging is stellar. I enjoy the lyrics as as well. I feel like they get a bad wrap ala Styx. A soft rock joke. But I think they rule.
I'm rounding this up to a 4 because I really love how well produced it is, the different voices (literal and metaphorical) heard throughout the album. Great instrument sounds and use of keyboards in an excellent way, not just as background. The songwriting isn't groundbreaking and the influences are pretty obvious, Pink Floyd being the most glaring, while also riding the line of Yacht Rock. But I can't deny it's enjoyable and exemplifies this era of music so well. It's a 3.5 to me, if there was one more breakout song I'd feel more enthusiastic about 4 stars.
Have really liked this album since I was a kid thanks to my dad!
This album starts and ends extremely well (except for "Bloody Well Right" which I found to be annoying). It's just the middle of the album that drags its star rating down. Masterfully produced album though
On a given day it possibly is the best Supertramp album, always a toss up between this or breakfast in America
Surprisingly I really enjoyed this. This album had the right combination of good vocals and fun rhythms to keep me entertained.
Gran álbum, una obra musical indispensable para los fans del género rock progresivo, increíble que haya salido hace 50 años y suena tan fresco y relevante ahora como en aquel entonces.
pretty cool, definitely going to give it a few more listens
Incredible. Every song on the first half of the album is a banger. I should listen to it again to gain appreciation for the second half of the album.
Great album. I don’t listen to a lot of supertramp but I liked this. Good rock album.
love supertramp
As músicas são uma jornada na história contada. Minha favorita é Crime of the Century, o instrumental nos últimos segundos da música são transcendentais. O riff do teclado com as cordas e o sax ao fundo é a melhor parte.
Was unfamiliar with Asylum, Rudy and the title track. I have owned "School" for quite some time and love the ethereal beginning of the song when it pops up randomly in my rotation. Crime Of The Century is worth a deeper listen.
Got mildly jaded when “Dreamer” came on and I realized my brain has been conditioned to imagine it alongside a commercial for a 2012 Mazda crv that has a child wearing a space helmet in the backseat gazing out the sunroof (jk it’s actually an Apple vision commercial which is worse) But great album
Well, that was bloody well right fun. Theatrical, with some Elton John and Pink Floyd spread throughout, but with their own unique flare. 3.5.
Notes of Beatles, ELO, Pink Floyd. Pretty enjoyable, but not sure if I’ll come back to it. Breakfast in America and Brother Where you Bound is where it’s at!
This is tough, Bloody Well Right is such a jam. And, beginning with Rudy, the end is great. Fuck it, gets a 4
4/5. I already loved this album before starting this list. Anything progressive rock was already in queue. And although this was a repeat listen, there are some songs on here that I am not a fan of: Dreamer and Everyone was listening. Just don't vibe with me. Everything else is really good and worth it. Since it is about 1/5th of the album I'm not including, even if everything else is great, it can only get a 4. This album is not for everyone and even if you hated the whole thing, I would get it. It feels like toned down progressive rock, like they are trying to be complex but not going far enough. It is a relatable album though, especially in your younger years, about feeling like a nobody and wondering what your part in all this is. And in this day and age, I think we can all relate to that experience. A good listen overall, and love to see it here. Best Song: Bloody Well Right, Asylum, Crime Of The Century
School is a great song and I especially love the piano solo. The build-up to it makes it pack a punch. I thought it was very interesting to have the lead vocalists alternate like that. It's quite refreshing.
A lot more progressive than I thought it would be, with a solid pop rock base. I enjoyed a lot of the more extended jams.
Appealed to my 70s upbringing
Pretty darn good
Only knew a couple of songs on this album but really enjoyed it
One specific transition bumped this from 3 to 4 stars for me.
Of this record! I actually own the album and I think that it is great musicianship, good hooks, and awesome music. 4/5.
Crime of the Century is Supertramp's third album, and their first to find critical and commercial success. Their first two albums were primarily filled with longer, prog-rock compositions; for this album, the band moved more toward pop formats, with shorter songs and a focus on melodic hooks. The result produced a few of the band's first hits, like "Dreamer" and "Bloody Well Right." These catchy, upbeat tracks have become defining examples of early prog rock, with the technical elements and elaborate orchestration typical of the genre.
Too much and not enough at the same time. But I'll give it a 4, it's was intriguing.
Great musicality, fun tone, love the bombast, a good time.
Good music, and a unique song. Nobody sounded like Supertramp.
Quintessential 70's, great vibe, and a concise track list. Really enjoyed!
Not quite as good Breakfast in America but overall a really strong album. Dreamer is a jam.
Well now I know I've always gotten Supertramp confused with Cheap Trick. Supertramp is much better.
Loved it!
3.5/5. The songs that hit, really hit
"Dreamer" ein absoluter klasse Song. Die anderen kommen nicht ganz ran, aber insgesamt ein gutes Album was ich mir gerne angehört habe
Grea prog rock/art rock album with some pop influences. The production of the album is top notch. The ending song, the self-titled Crime Of The Century is a really great way to finish the album. Other song I loved a lot was Dreamer. Overall a very good album.
1001 Albums #9 Actually really surprised me but I heard hide in your shell and I was sold on this album without having heard the rest! Best song: hide in your shell
War ganz cool! Etwas rockiger als mein Geschmack aber cool
9/10
Way better than I thought it was going to be. I knew "Dreamer" before going in, but the rest is also great. I've listened to Breakfast in America in the past and I think I actually prefer this album. First half of it is weaker but second half delivers. Liked songs: Hide in Your Shell, Dreamer, Rudy, If Everyone was Listening
Skemmtileg plata. Hrikalega öflug tónsmíði og soundið er crisp.
I needed this. I haven't had nearly enough prog rock as of lately, so I'll gladly take an album like this. I think Crime of the Century is a pretty solid album. Don't get me wrong. This is not the best prog rock album ever made. It doesn't have to be. Not every album is going to be on the same level as something like The Dark Side of the Moon or In the Court of the Crimson King. However, all I wanted from this album was some pretty good prog rock. Fortunately, that's what Supertramp have given me with this album. I like the singing. It kind of reminds me of Yes or Electric Light Orchestra. I know ELO isn't really prog rock, but I can make cross-genre comparisons, can't I? The writing is pretty good. There's some general theming here that makes the album a cohesive experience. It's a bit of a vague theming, but it's there if you listen hard enough. The sound, of course, is great. I like the keyboards especially. They really elevate songs like "Dreamer" to make them better than they would've been with weaker keyboard work. Overall, this is a pretty good prog rock album, which means I like it more than many of the albums on the list. 4/5.
3.5 stars
Very good album from start to finish. 4 stars out of 5
Way better than I thought it would be
Pretty good!! Pink floyd-y
I thought I was going to hate it I found it annoying at the start it was beautiful i see the hype now
Cool!
Very nice music - reminds me of Pink Floyd, I had listened to some of their later work (eg The logical song) which is more pop. Best songs: School, hide in your shell The lyrics haven't aged that well though, to the point of occasional cringe ("So you think your schooling is phony")
very good album, really enjoyed and would like to listen more.
Piano is amazing
Bend kojeg stavljam u ladicu - zelim jos njihovih albuma poslusat.
Track 1: School (8/10) Outside of doing this list I've been listening to lots of prog rock so I'm very happy to get this album. I love this first track, the vocals are great and I enjoy the instrumental break in the middle. Track 2: Bloody Well Right (9/10) They hit gold with that chorus. The saxaphone is also stellar. Track 3: Hide in Your Shell (7/10) This was a very talented group of musicians. I don't think this song stands up to the first two but the instrumentation is impressive and I thought the last minute was great! Track 4: Asylum (8/10) The best song on a lyrical level so far. Great end to the first side of the record. Track 5: Dreamer (9/10) I don't know about the rest of the world but this song is a staple of Canadian rock radio so I've heard it all my life. It's such a classic. The vocal harmonies and the keyboards are highlights, and the song hits that perfect pop song length of 3½ minutes. Track 6: Rudy (7/10) This one was, again, impressive from a musical standpoint. Wasn't super into it for the whole time though. Track 7: If Everyone Was Listening (7/10) Pretty nice little track. Didn't wow me. Track 8: Crime of the Century (8/10) Awesome ending to the album, with some nice piano bits and my favourite saxaphone part on the album. Overall: 8/10 This didn't excite me as much as I hoped it would, especially cause I adore Breakfast in America and was shocked that it wasn't included in the list. That being said, this really is an amazing album that I'll need to give a few relistens to. The first half was much better than the second half. Fav Song: Dreamer Least Fav Song: If Everyone Was Listening
Pretty great. Had this album for years and never really gave it that much of a chance.
Really nice mix of prog and pop. Fun and engaging listen! Will definitely be returning to this in the future
Pleasant surprise. Allready knew dreamer ofcourse.
so quirky
Was not expecting to like this as much as I did. Really smartly composed music. Doesn't always go where you want it to, but the album has a narrative, operatic feel to it that you are happy to be taken wherever. Think I'm going to get more into the prog-rock entries as this goes on. 7 / 10 Best tracks: School, If Everyone Was Listening, Crime of the Century
Good tracks, loved the riff and mid chorus into a guitar solo (no words) favorite is Rudy.
Oooo, faktiskt riktigt bra
interesante
When School gets going and the crime of the century gets underway, Supertramp got you where they need you. An odyssey of progressive pop, this album is bound to delight and surprise in equal measure. Favorites: School, Bloody Well Right, Hide in Your Shell, Dreamer, If Everyone Was Listening.
Another first listen and honestly didnt love the first half, but the second half GOT me and so upon a second listen I enjoyed it all a lot more. So 4
These guys were not really my flavor back in the day, but I was guilty of cranking them up when no one was looking. Ssh… I like it!
I'm realizing I might be biased because I love this genre and these guys have basically mastered the genre the only complaints I can think of are nitpicks, like the mastering on the lead vocalist 8.5/10
Fire , definitely will continue listening
album started off slow, by track 4 it slayed. piano and guitar solos were everything - it gave queen, bowie, elton
Pretty cool!
super good!
Groovy, good tunes, not too heavy or fast but fun and good vibes
I can file this one under "Albums my dad would blast on the downstairs stereo". Maybe its nostalgia but I enjoyed this, a little psychadelic but not to the point I'm annoyed, Dreamer rules.
The first side of this album is stellar. Dreamer is a very nostalgic song (obviously regarding the Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle) and the rest is the rest! Definitely listen before you die. And believe me… you’re going to die
I’ve only known two Supertramp songs in my life up to this point: The Logical Song and Give A Little Bit. And I’m not particularly a fan of either of them. So I wasn’t expected much from this album when it popped up for me. But holy fuck, did this one get to me. There really isn’t that hint of cheese that I heard from my prior Supertramp experiences (all two songs worth). There some good shit in this prop-pop mixture and some of this even gave me some emotional vibes. Not really too much of a fan of Dreamer, though, the popular track of the album. Personally, I was more into Hide in Your Shell, and If Everyone Was Listening. Overall, this was a very nice expansion into Supertramp’s discography for me. Favorite Track: Hide In Your Shell Other hits: If Everyone Was Listening, Crime of the Century, School, Asylum, Rudy
I don't know what this album reminds me of, it reminds me of many things, almost all of which are good (Almost like a fusion of PF and Queen). It's certainly progressive, but there are songs like 'School' and 'Dreamer' that lean into a more glam rocky sound. Each song feels like it has a distinctive concept lyrically, concepts that are easy to follow and that are executed quite well. 'School' is direct in the sense that it's vigorously against the schooling system's obsession with crushing student spirits. 'Asylum' is an interesting depiction of insanity while 'Rudy' follows a protagonist living a crushingly directionless life. I love the sinister open-endedness and uncertainty surrounding the lyrics of the closing title track - it's easily my favorite song here and a perfect way to send this record off. Musically, it's all very theatric and musically rich. It's not the most standoutish album when it comes to forming a unique sonic identity - but still, it was enjoyable all the way through.
pretty fun actually
The fact Breakfast in America is not in this box is an absolute travesty. It is one of the best prog rock albums of all-time and Supertramp's best work. What a shame. Breakfast in America is a brilliant album. Now that's out of the way, I am going to try to rate this album without the bias of this being AT BEST Supertramp's 2nd best album. School, Bloody Well Right, Hide in Your Shell, Asylum and Dreamer are all great songs. It's a really good album but I find it wanders a bit too much for me on the back half, as prog-rock can tend to do. It's not their fault but a nature of the prog-rock beast. Sometimes it can eat even the best bands. If someone wanted to listen to Supertramp, I would absolutely recommend Breakfast in America first. In fact, I recommend that album to anyone who doesn't want to listen to Supertramp as well. So good band, deserves to be on the list, but not with this album as a representation of their sound.
Lot of good songs here, and good rhythms. Yet another one of those albums where I've heard one song before, and now discover a bunch of others.
Weird 70's. Good for a dentists office in the 80's. The wood paneling and copies of people magazine haunt my nightmares.
V good
School and dreamer are bangers, but hands down the closer crime of the century is excellent, that Sax with the drums piano strings and harmonica is beautiful. Super duper 70s feeling. Not a band I've ever listened to before but I thought this was really really good. If I was big into the genre I reckon I'd be even more stoked on this.
Groundforming for progressive rock! 4/5
That was a solid listen. I really enjoyed Bloody Well Right.
Great
Very seventies best described as glitzy yacht rock.
enjoyed this
The Pink Floyd influence is insanely strong here but I don't mean that as a disservice one bit. This is inspired writing at it's finest. I think it takes a lot of what Pink Floyd does so well and buts a unique, laid back twist on it. The keyboard is tight and impressive, and I loved the changes in guitar tones. It's definitely a bit too British at times, but never too much that it gets in the way of my experience. Favorites are Bloody Well Right, Hide In Your Shell, and If Everyone Was Listening.
Good
Good stuff
BEST SONGS: - Crime of the Century - Rudy
Didn't think I liked Supertramp!
First track blew me away. Strong 4.5
I didn't know they were British. Never would have guessed. I am very familiar with a later album, but not so much this one. I really liked it!
I thought it was wonderful
Some really good tunes and fun prog elements. Was better than I realised.
Some bangers, some songs that probably grow on you after a couple more listenings
sick grand
DREEEEAMER YOU’RE NOTHING BUT A DREEEEAMER I genuinely fw supertramp so hard, but their other albums are comparatively much better. I enjoyed this one a lot, but it’s not their best work. 7/10 (3.5/5 but that sounds meaner.)
Classic, listened to it twice. I don't know if I will ever put it on, but will try to remember.
7/10
it feels like i’m in a dramatic 80s movie about some teens doing drugs or something. It’s both really groovy and kinda depressing
This was a great album. The instrumental solos are probably my favorite part, but lyrically it’s powerful and consistent all the way through.
Have always enjoyed a bit of Supertramp but from a greatest hits perspective. Have never listened to a studio album. Really enjoyed it. Will definitely be listening to this again in the future.
its pretty good. super vibey, but some of the songs are weird and out of place
Wrong kind of ~songs from the enchanted forest~. Made me want to listen to Van-O instead.
-Okay so I have definitely been converted into the cult of prog rock, and this album solidified it -I really like the unique instrumentation and variation between the songs, so I’ll give it a soft 4. Bloody Well Right is probably one of my new favorite songs -Favorites are Bloody Well Right, Hide In Your Shell, and Rudy
Not a massive Supertramp fan but generally like them. Enjoyable music, not exactly a masterpiece but fine all the same. Easy 4.
There's more to Supertramp than I had originally thought. Interesting album with a couple of classics on it. Definitely worth a listen.
I was introduced to Supertramp by a friend of mine's older brother, when I was a pre-teen, who had more sophisticated tastes such as Chicago, Traffic, Lighthouse and Supertramp amongst others that was an alternative to my Elton John and Wings albums and AM radio. The music seemed light years ahead, prog, rock and keyboards which I hadn't been exposed to before. One of the first summer of concerts I attended was Cheap Trick, Van Halen and Supertramp, all in their primes at the time. Though their stage shows paled in comparison, Tramp made such an impression on me with a great concert that I still relive it in my mind. Crime of the Century is one of those albums from my past I still will listen to without feeling weird about what was going through my young impressionable mind. Though Breakfast in America was a more popular record, Crime of the Century was truly peak Supertramp. With songs such as, School, Bloody Well Right, Hide In Your Shell, Dreamer and Rudy, this is a solid collection that rivals any album from this era. Once punk and new wave arrived, my interest dwindled, but in recent years I've spun this album again and it still holds up.
I usually don't really get into prog rock, but this one was great. There were a lot of cool harmonies and song structures. But it didn't feel like it got lost in itself, like prog usually does. They were just fun songs playing with cool ideas.
Really fun album. Catchy songs, danceable melodies, and singable choruses (Bloody Well Right is a bopppp). It was glamorous and a bit like a Broadway musical -- reminded me a bit of Queen, but in a more lighthearted and less outrageous vein.
Supertramp's Crime of the Century is a solid prog-pop effort. Tracks like "Bloody Well Right" and "Dreamer" are catchy and memorable, while the title track showcases the band's instrumental prowess. However, some songs feel overlong and meandering, and the overall tone can be a bit too melancholic. Overall, a worthwhile listen, but not quite a masterpiece.
Honestly, only really heard their Breakfast In America album before, and the lonesome harmonica this opened with really belies the shit you're about to get into. Yes, its MOR Prog Rock, but it is very well produced MOR Prog Rock, its not pulling itself at the seams like some Prog Rock of the 70s was doing, nothing overstays its welcome, its quite punchy in comparison to the 10 minute+ sweeping epic songs Pink Floyd and Rush were doing
Bloody Well Right is so funny, these guys rock.
Good times. Some classics and some I've never heard. Great sound, love their keyboards. Happy to have heard and will look for more from them.
Really interesting, definitely a fan of Hide In Your Shell
Is it OK to like Supertramp? Are they not-prog enough, too dad rock? Either way - GIVE ME MORE SYNTHS
This is actually pretty good. It's like if The Wall was a campy Christian musical or something.
This band is severely underrated
Love Asylum!
Really enjoyed it. Ended up downloading the combination of the original CD and the live Hammersmith collection.
really wanted to like this more than i did. good overall but felt directionless and boring at points. light 7/10
I listened to "The Very Best of Supertramp" quite a bit growing up, so I'm already familiar with pretty much half of this record and all of "Breakfast in America". Supertramp has always sounded whimsical and a bit peculiar to me. A fun peculiar, that is. Each song from this era of theirs is a journey in itself, with plenty of twists and turns and their signature bubbly keyboard sounds plus melodic piano chords to guide you, the listener, along. I think "Hide in Your Shell" and "Dreamer" are perfect examples of that description when focusing on just this album. It seems like a lot of people like to poopoo on prog rock (and it seems like there's a lot of it on this list), but Supertramp seems to maximize their creative juices when it comes to the genre at large and that is very evident here. They simply blend pop and prog rock well, curating an enjoyable listening experience.
great sounding album, simalar style to queen.
Never listened to much Supertramp outside of their hits, which I've always really liked, esp the ones from Breakfast in America. After listening to this album on the drive in this morning, I'm now halfway through their whole catalogue at the office.
A nice surprise. I know a little bit of Supertramp but have never listened to an earlier album. Seemed like some talented musicians having fun.
Really enjoyed this and had to go back for repeat plays. Found it on the rockier and more accessible side of the prog spectrum and really cinematic in a good way. Naturally made to be played loud, I feel. Looking forward to trying more Supertramp in the future.
DREEEEEAMMMER! This record is almost perfect! Quite nostalgic for me. I can remember my dad and mom throwing this on during summer days. Thankfully I grew up in a house that normally had music playing a lot. The arrangements in this album need to be reviewed by modern artists. Supertramp gives their instruments room to breathe. It really sets up emotion in each song. They don't make music like this anymore. And it's a shame! Album artwork is awesome too!
Went into this knowing a few songs but really enjoyed the experience of the entire album. Right out of the gate, School is a ripper after a long intro.
Yes please! Of its time, but sometimes that's ok.
üle pika aja jälle heliteos, mitte lihtsalt plaat
4.5 it's a shame that so many tracks are missing from this album. No matter what streaming service you use. Making a note to pick up the LP.
Overall a good album. Started off great with School, and the right to Bloody Well Right. 4/5 would listen again.
Really liked this, did kinda remind me of Pink Floyd. I really liked the slower parts with the keyboard and saxophone contrasting with the heavier guitar parts coming in. The lyrics were really great too, loved the storytelling that went on in them. Didn’t love that almost every song was over 5 minutes but it’s a 70s rock album so what can you do. Really struggled on whether to give this a 5 instead but there were a couple tracks that I really didn’t connect with so imma give it a 4.
Прог-рок здорового человека!!
Весьма чувственный, стоит на уровне с Songs from the big chair, мб чуть ниже. Есть что на сэмплы взять
Bastante agradable.
Pretty solid album but nothing that really stood out.
It was solid. Supertramp is v chill 60/70s rock
I liked this one! Interesting vibes and cool stuff being done on the piano.
Banging album.
It’s no Breakfast in America but still better than most !
Supertramp is not my favorite 70s English rock band, but they put together a nicely cohesive album. I've never particularly liked Dreamer, but heard in the context of the album as a whole, I can better appreciate it. The B side of this album has the better tracks. If Everyone Was Listening and Crime of the Century are gems. My estimation of Supertramp has gone up.
My dad LOVED this band. Solid Yacht Rock album
This was awesome, a really fun listen
It's the first album of that band, that I have ever listened. Interesting combination of musical instruments. I'll listen other albums of Supertramp.
Funky
Super chill and enjoyable
This is another case where I sorta forgot I was listening to this album intentionally instead of just listening to my regular music, so I guess I liked it
It’s more of a 3.75 or 3.5
solid album 3.9/5
I love Supertramp
Fasse mich kurz: - Supertramp toll!
- Muss sagen, dass mir Crime of The Century dann tatsächlich sogar noch besser gefällt. - Tolle Platte. Werde mal wieder mehr Supertramp hören. 4,25/5
Really fun, but no breakfast in america
I enjoyed the hell out of that. Prog isn't my scene but Supertramp approaches the genre with something that most other prog acts don't seem to have: restraint. These fellas know their craft and are obviously skilled musicians. But their willingness to hold back for the sake of the overall composition creates an end product that's just really enjoyable. Well done, boys.
Great, classic
Absolute class
I love supertramp
Enjoyed it a lot. Was surprised because prog rock isn’t normally my thing. The sax and piano were great. 4/5!
Known this one for a while, unmitigated classic. None of them reach the heights of the opener 'School', but it's a fun romp anyway
Highlights: School, Bloody Well Right, Asylum, If Everyone Was Listening, Crime of the Century. In a nutshell: think Yes meets 10cc. There’s nothing sonically groundbreaking on this album (a mixed bag of prog, pop rock and art rock, proto-yacht rock?), but it’s inoffensive. Didn’t mind it. Not having Breakfast In America on this list is a shame. Someone add it on, pronto! Overall: 7/10
Really split on this. Liked it more than most 3s but less than most 4s. 3.5. Some catchy songs. Probably will round up or down reviews from now so this is a 4.
I had never really paid much attention to Supertramp before and went into this expecting poppy yacht rock. It turns out they are a lot more prog than I thought and I enjoyed this quite a lot.
VERY fun, can’t believe i had never heard of this band before, such a pink floyd-ian vibe w the long solos, would explore!
Great piano rock. This one is very genesis.
"Bloody Well Right" was my intro to Supertramp, really. I first heard a live version of that on the radio. It had such a great groove and then the chorus came on, and it sounded so British. And the saxophone! Man, I love that song. I still don't know how Hodgson sings high like that on things like "Dreamer". True story: we had bought the greatest hits of Supertramp and were going for a drive. It was only then that we realized "hey, there's a CD player in the car!" and we christened the car with that. (This was about 15 years ago or so, mind you.) You know, you listen to Supertramp's hits and you don't get the "prog rock" thing. But then you hear the full album and you hear songs like the title track, where there's only a few lyrics and the second half of the song is a lush, instrumental bit and you GET it. Definitely something I will go back to, but "Breakfast In America" I still enjoy more. Top tracks: "Bloody Well Right," "Crime Of The Century"
I don't normally do this, but I'm going to complain about the 1001 Albums book picking the wrong album. Breakfast in America is THE quintessential Supertramp album and is so much better than Crime of the Century. I buy that Crime of the Century was the band's breakthrough, but Breakfast in America is their best album, with the Logical Song, Goodbye Stranger, Breakfast in America, and Take the Long Way Home. Plus, it just sounds better. Crime of the Century sounds like a band that still hasn't entirely figured out who they are. There are plenty of good moments, especially Bloody Well Right, but this is a case where the 1001 missed the mark. Giving it a 4 more because I like Supertramp and would listen again, but it's more like a 3.5.
Ooh, I like. What a fun, unique sound.
Like it. A little Meatloaf in there maybe?
7/10 nice but mid
Clásico. Bueno
Good
i'm not really sure how to classify this album as it basically just had a little bit of everything that the 70s were known for. with that said, it was pretty enjoyable to listen to and i was definitely grooving to a few of the tracks. also for some reason i thought supertramp was a 90s band for years, they just have that kind of name/vibe to me i guess. favorites: school, bloody well right, crime of the century
Very 70's feel, oh those halcyon days!
Really enjoyed the keys.
I rarely take the time to listen to them, but I'm always having a good time when I do.
A classic that deserves its place all the way here, but not a perfect album to me, like Supertramp have done with Breakfast in America. Roger Hodgson songs are there to kick in and uplift the album, but the Davies ones are less for me.
A bit proggy, like this. Listened to it a few times.
I love Supertramp's ability to be theatrical and to flirt with Prog-Rock overindulgence, but never lose focus on the songs. The engineering and production are amazing. The songs here aren't quite as strong as those on Breakfast in America. But the arrangements are more interesting and Siebenberg is still hitting the drums instead of tapping out percussive licks as starts to do later on. It's amazing what a huge difference a drummer's performance makes to a recording.
I think the album started really strong, kind lost me a little in the middle, but it ended really strong again.
- 8 songs, 44:10 - very 70s indeed - it's like good, but there's something about it, like it could be better - its intricate but also bland? - i feel like it's trying to make me feel a certain way but i don't, maybe i just need to listen to it more - Asylum 5:58: "not quite right" sums up my feelings (so far) about this album although it was nice towards the end - this album is so contradictory, why is it unique but also not particularly exciting (dreamer)? - oooh dreamer to rudy transition - ok rudy is really nice (i love it; added to my playlist) - school, bloody well right, asylum last 3 minutes, the last three!!!!!!!!!! (specifically rudy in general, IEWL chorus, and COTC outro w/ sax) - ayo, it redempted itself!!! 4.0/5.0
Great classic dad rock.
Not my cup of tea, but recognize the quality.
1. 4.7 2. 4.5 3. 4.4 4. 4.5 5. 4.5 6. 4.4 7. 4.2 8. 4.5
school clar mi a atras atentia pana acum (one of the popular ones dar e populara for a reason) asylum absolut geniala full of emotion and a full on roller coaster crime of the century very sexy
first listen its good
Supertramp are the most American sounding UK band ever. This is a good, solid 70’s progressive rock album. It’s of comparable quality to other prog rock groups of the same era, e.g., Pink Floyd, Yes, Led Zeppelin.
Note: this is the first album that game up on 1001 albums generator. I went through a 70s prog rock phase when I was a teenager. Although the 70s are my favorite decade, British prog rock is not my favorite genre. So much over indulgence. This one surprised me though. I've never heard any Supertramp outside of the hit singles from Breakfast in America. Crime of the Century does not start out that promising. I was not a fan of School or Bloody Well Right. Things picked up on Hide in your shell, and definitely improved from there. I like how the songs in the latter half of the album were less serious, even fun. They don't sound like they take themselves too seriously. 4 stars.
Cool album. Multiple styles within it
good.... but i can only handle half an album at a time from supertramp... i need more time
Pleasantly surprised with this album. Very dense songs with tons of riffs and fantastic bass lines. Moments of Rhodes funk, crunchy rockin', chill ballads. I only knew of 'Bloody Well Right' and other singles and always thought Supertramp was kinda corny and this album definitely changed my mind.
This one was amazing. Okay it wasn’t like the best album ever but I as rlly grooving and it was very much my style. More my cup of tea than some of the others.
Was great to hear the album as a whole for the first time :)
The opening and ending to this album are absolutely amazing. I have never heard Supertramp until today. I loved this album. I will probably need a few more listens for it to sink in. School and Crime of the Century are absolutely stellar songs. This has been a blank spot for me of 70s rock so I'm glad to finally listen.
just riiight para um sábado de feriado! me sentindo uma tia legalzona :)
NICE! too theatrical though
Good seventies progish rock. Well played but lacks that spark that makes up a 5 stat album. Wont go into my rotation.
Amazing. Not sure if I had ever listened from beginning to end.
Além do hit de rádio, Dreamer, surpreendeu-me o talento instrumental e as melodias intensas.
Ihan mielenkiintosia sointumuutoksia! Ei ollut tylsä. Äijät poistelee meikäläisen kommentit 😱😱
Fun dramatic and hits some high highs. 7.7/10 Rudy, crime of the cnetury and bloody well right stood out to me
Enjoyed this one more than I anticipated. Felt like the album flowed quite well.
The first song in the albums started off super quietly, so I completely forgot that I was listening to music, and it jumpscared me when it got a bit louder. Overall - nice songs, and it's clear that they are quite old, but still good though.
I really liked this album. I don’t think I’d listen to it past this listen but it was solid. I enjoyed listening to it. Songs are a bit long but it’s not a big deal. The ending of the last song, Crime of the century, felt like the perfect end to the album. 7.5/10.
Supertramp still kills it, every time
Classic. Just as I remembered from when I was a kid.
Cool vibe
Standout Tracks: "School," "Hide in your Shell," "Asylum," "Crime of the Century," Lyrics/Vocals- 3/5 Instrumentals- 5/5 Vibes- 4/5 Overall- 4/5 To tell you the truth, this album was instrumentally very beautiful. It was produced insanely well, and that's something that stuck out most to me. It seemed like some of these songs were multiple songs wrapped in one, and it wasn't a bad thing. One of my favorite genres is 70s rock because it just has such raw talent and emotion woven into it. That said, this album was somewhat forgettable. The standout tracks to me were very strong, but a lot of songs generally felt like filler. But nothing is better to me than an album you can turn on and just relax to.
I really enjoyed this album. It seemed to well thought out and there were so many little details that just made it very special to me. I’m shocked I hadn’t heard of them before. I loved almost every song.
In one ear and out the other. Nothing to complain about though.
I definitely thought Supertramp was a different band lol I didn't realize they were British Prog. I actually kinda dig it. Edit: upon further research they ARE the band I thought they were but I think I was expecting more of a late 70s pop vibe because I only had heard the Breakfast in America singles previously. This album is quite different but I actually did enjoy it. Hide In Your Shell is really good. I like "the fire's becoming colder" lyric a lot. The piano in Asylum, especially at the end, reminds me of Come Sail Away by Styx and also the chimes in Sunday Morning by The Velvet Underground. The piano and flute in If Everyone Was Listening 🫶 "WHAT IS YOUR COSTUME TODAY? AND WHO ARE THE PROPS IN YOUR PLAY?" ❤️😭 Probabaly second only to the title track for favorite song on album. The guitar and piano in Crime of the Century are just so good. AND THE SAX OUTRO??!??! 💯 I'm a sucker for a good sax outro. There's a mix of 5/5 songs and 3/5 songs on here for me so I'm giving it a solid 4/5.
Favorite track: School
I listened to this on a saturday morning while doing housework, which is how we always listened to it when I was a kid.
4.4 - Wow this really took me by surprise. I’ve listened a bit to super tramp and thought they were okay but straight away I just loved this. This was another album that I would never have come across without the list. With some more listening it could be a 5
I like the upbeat second half of School. Bloody Well Right - what a song name. I didn't realise Supertramp were British. Hide In Your Shell wasn't doing much for me but the song finale is enjoyable. My least favourite moments are when its just piano and vocals, as in the start of Asylum. Dreamer does the same thing as a lot of the other songs. I find it boring or annoying at the start, but it builds into something entertaining. Rudy does it too - it's quite amazing how they manage to deliver this formula on almost every track. My assumptions looking at the tracklist (and not seeing any hits I recognise) was that I wouldn't be impressed by this album. But I was happily wrong, I find quite a lot of it to be a good fun time. Most songs take a couple of minutes to grow into, but that's something I can tolerate, and it adds an interesting flow to the record. Fave Tracks: School, Bloody Well Right, Rudy 4.1/5
Somewhere between 3 and 4. I couldn't get rid of the thought they sounded like an aldi own brand pink floyd but you sometimes the own brand stuff is really nice.
There is a lot of good stuff in this album. Very prog, some dated vocals, but overall a good album that grew on me with each listen. A low 4.
Bloody well right - Nice song Nice album, I'll give it four stars.
Pretty great, 4.5, almost a 5 but I got tired of it by the end
Enjoyable! Pretty vanilla as far as prog rock goes, or at least I thought so. Loved the guitar and the synth. 8/10
Pretty good, nothing phenomenal but nothing bad 7/10
This didn’t age super gracefully, but it is still good. 7/10
Some really good stuff there.
Genre: Pop Instruments: 4/5 Modern Translation: 4/5 Dance Potential: 3/5 Listening Location: Commute from/to work Favourite Song: School or Hide in Your Shell Made me feel: enthusiastic and motivated. Loved the piano in this one and the sprinkling of brass instruments. Appreciated that it was a short album.
I thought supertramp was going to be a one trick pony band, a super awesome 80s synth pony with laser eyes riding a rainbow, but one trick. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety I found and enjoyed it throughout.
These guys were one of the bands playing the first time I went to the Gorge so there may be a bit of nostalgia factoring in, but I thought is a pretty solid rock album. Will always love Bloody Well Right.
Good album. Very queen like
The first song slaps overall it's pretty good I don't usually listen to music from that time so it might be my favorite album from that period.
Loved it. Love Supertramp. Takes me way back in time.
очень клевый альбом
алкоальбом: стаут овсянный
I just listened to (half of) this record a week ago. I've listened to Supertramp a bunch, but mostly Greatest Hits stuff. I was surprised at how good some of the "non hits" were though.
Fajna muza taka na codzień Dobre instrumenty i wdzięczna
Pretty solid prog rock. Mixture of Elton John, Stephen Wilson, and Yes. Some of the vocals and lyrics are hit or miss but the music itself is great.
This was an average progressive rock album. There were only 8 tracks, and some of them were quite memorable. I may not visit this album again but I will save those tracks for future playlists! I would highly recommend at least a single listen! Favorite Song(s): "Dreamer", "Bloody Well Right", "Crime of the Century"
Great to re-listen!
I have long forgotten this album. I did not, back then, see how wonderfully complex this was. Thanks
Can't believe it's 50 years since this came out!! Going back another 50 years takes us to 1924. Music, & society as a whole changed WAY more in the 50 years preceding this album's release than in the 50 years since.
Reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd.
Fantastic 10/10
great album I was listening 1000 times
Quote cool
Supertramp is one of those bands that I think might have the Midas touch. Their prowess is once again put on display on Crime Of The Century. Short track list (mostly) full of hits that checks all the classic 70s/80s boxes, but also has a timeless quality. Some of the songs might run a little long for me, but that's a small price to pay for what is otherwise a pretty stellar album. Highlight: Bloody Well Right Lowlight: Asylum Surprise Hit: Crime Of The Century
Amazing album, didn't know Supertramp made prog music like this. Majestic sound, especially in the last track that makes you feel like you're ascending into space. First 2 tracks are a good intro, the harmonic to start/end the album well used as well and in a different style that Im used to, adding another layer to the music. 4.5
