Had this suggestion been *Breakfast In America*, which is obviously part of Dimery's list with its string of timeless hits, I might have considered including this particular record in my own list of 1001 albums to listen to. But here, in the case of *Crime Of The Century*, and apart from "Dreamer" in it, there are no timeless hits to speak of. Good records can't only be build on them, admittedly, otherwise they would be "best of" albums... But the snag for *Crime Of the Century* is that more than half of the cuts in it are not particularly compelling: their overall production and a lot of the instrumentation and arrangements have aged poorly, to be honest, leaving a somewhat bland taste on the tongue. Besides, other reference points to describe this record are always detrimental to it. Supertramp are sort of prog rock, but they can't instill a truly evocative and ambient atmosphere the way Pink Floyd did. Or they can't play with time shifts and rock out like Yes, for instance. Plus, they're kinda soft-rock, but there are none of the melodic twists and turns or off-kilter chord changes that made Steely Dan the somewhat enigmatic band they were. There are a few lively moments in this tracklisting (apart for "Dreamer", mostly the end sections of "School", "Rudy" and the title track). But those peaks can't make up for the overall snorefest plains running all the way to the horizon elsewhere. At times, listening to this album feels like being that guy locked behind interdimensional bars on its cover. You think something interesting or exciting might be about to start. But it very rarely does, actually. And so you're stuck in limbo. That doesn't make this album the *musical* "crime of the century", I'll grant you that. But that doesn't make it a mandatory listen either. The only thing that can save Supertramp is when their songwriting is direct enough to mark your memory--which was the case for the four hits of *Breakfast In America*, plus a few other cuts in it, making it a more consequential album. At least they managed to leave their imprint on pop culture thanks to their singles, which very few acts can do, at least to this extent. By the way, and on this subject precisely, there's also "The Very Best Of Supertramp" available out there. Listen to it first, *and then*, if you're really digging it, see for yourself if the rest is right up your alley... While not a great record per se - and I’m not of the rock opera leanings - somehow Supertramp know how to spin a tune and make it memorable.

A really good album, very much of its time, but with a thoughtful, unique musical point of view. This is music that's really smart and well crafted, but also charming and accessible. Some of the songs are overly long, but musically, the album is solid. I liked it a lot more on the second listen and can tell it would improve immensely on repeated listenings. Fave Songs: Crime of the Century, Dreamer, Rudy, Bloody Well Right, If Everyone Was Listening

Overall enjoyable album. Only a couple songs stood out but the rest all kind of blended together. Reminded me too much of Queen and other artists/songs that did it better and felt more raw imo.

Great album top to bottom. School, bloody well right, Asylum and so on. Great instrumentals on piano, harmonica, guitar etc accompanied by big vocals ands sharp lyrics. Could use some inspiration in terms of originality it seems remnant of pink Floyd. Super tramp still has a very unique style in my opinion and stands apart from many bands during the same time period which all sound far too similar

The first couple of tracks are really dated and could be mistaken for a 70s film boogie style soundtrack. From asylum onwards, there are some great songs that I'd listen to again.

Strong record, not perfect, but favourable.

This was quite an charming album featuring thought provoking lyrics, expansive arrangements and complex time signatures. It's a record to play in the evening when you want to drift off somewhere. I enjoyed the 70s prog keyboard sounds and the way the bass lines add to suspense and the feeling of space. There's lots of drama and theatrical performance (the lead singer has a good vocal range). The best tracks are the quirky numbers 'The Logical Song' and 'Dreamer', but oddly these shorter uptempo pop songs almost seem out of step with the rest of the album. Overall, it's enjoyable if you listen closely and give each track a chance to unfold. And the cover is quite fitting for the spacey sounds within.

Strange old music was ok an odd mix of rock and and pop. Already knew dreamer because I think it was sampled in a rave song. Wouldn't get out of bed for it.

Very average 70s prog rock with 2 standout tracks ("School" and "Asylum"). The finale of the last track ("Crime of the Century") was also nice. I'm kind of done with prog rock at the moment. Would have loved this two years ago.

Pretty damn good

Take the blandest thing about most popular '70s bands, like Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Rush, 10cc, Eagles, and Led Zeppelin. Mix it all together and now you have a hit-and-miss album, most of which are misses.

Much better than expected. Reminded me of early days Elton John.

Hi- Bloody Well Right, Dreamer The crime of the century is that this isn't even Supertramp's best album (That award goes to Famous Last Words, sorry not sorry), but don't get me wrong, it's still great. Bloody Well Right and Dreamer are the rightful radio hits, and the rest is sort of a mixed bag of efforts, that's neither the best nor the worst Supertramp has to offer. Likeable, but not my first choice.

This is another one of those late night backyard bbq party vibe albums. It's nice to listen to the whole album in context, Bloody Well Right is still the standout track though.

This is not the small area of prog I can tolerate. Hide In Your Shell was alright but otherwise I don't get on with the meandering storytelling.

This is not particularly gripping. I'm pretty busy at work today, so maybe not giving it the attention it deserves, but it's quite formulaic I think. Nothing really stood out to me, once the album was over I went back and listened to the most played songs to see if I'd missed something. If I had, it didn't reveal itself to me on a second listen.

Underrated band.

Dad pop, though I didn't recognize it as such when Dad showed it - at least Bloody Well Right and Dreamer - to me. In context, even those sillier tracks fit nicely into the Anglo class despair framework: The lyrical material is the right amount of dark, if sometimes a bit brief. Wurlitzer's appearance was appreciated as always, with jazzy touches not much worse than some of the best I've seen. Dynamic range comes through in a big way on the remaster.

Come with me, my gentle friends, on a mystical voyage to a long-desolate land where I have no map, where one flinches at the fauna and flora (usually dragons soaring imperially through a purple sky and Moroccan hashish respectively), and where your dad informs you that the wandering minstrels starving in this once-verdant wasteland could properly play their instruments: welcome to the land of soft prog. Soft prog is the term I'm defining as distinct from hard prog. The differences are obvious. Hard prog bands are the ones who pushed prog to the sonic and lyrical extremes of nonsense (your Genesises, Yesses and ELPs), whereas your soft prog bands stayed closer to the standard of the 70s rock band, only stepping partially into the realm of sonic and lyrical nonsense. Supertramp are firmly in the latter category, here producing an album of 8 long songs with shared themes of loneliness and madness, rather than suites in three movements transcribing the Tibetan Book of the Dead, which they would not have actually read. Mind, Crime of the Century does aspire to the grandiosity of, say, Dark Side of the Moon or The Lamb Lies Down in Broadway, declaring solemnly that it's dealing with very serious themes. So it's Hegelianistically pretentious. Now, pretentiousness is not necessarily a failing in my book; I love plenty of bpost-punk bands who claimed inspiration from Wittgenstein and Dada. But I have never found the pretentiousness of prog bands to appeal; it's not much of a brag to say you've read Tolkien, a children's author. But never mind; the theme of isolation is not diminished simply because it's a common theme. But on my second listen today, a glaring, sizeable problem emerged: I couldn't tell any of the songs apart. It was as if all the songs sought to reflect the Platonic Supertramp song: 7 minutes long, histrionic bridges and a lyrical conceit that suggests a band swimming into currents they can't navigate safely (curiously, that also serves as the Platonic Tears for Fears song). Anyway, this homogenity made me conclude that Supertramp only had a smattering of smattering ideas for this album, and just continually recycled the fuckers. I can't say this album is a disaster; I think one or two of my mates would explain to me for 45 minutes precisely why this is a masterpiece, and this morn I was happy to be generous and give this 3. But that second listen just discouraged me. Having a tortured emotion may be an everyday currency in popular music, but I don't see the benefit of announcing your sadness so flamboyantly. I'm sure the cover inspired the cover to a Fighting Fantasy book. I just checked, and I think I'm right: no. 32, Slaves of the Abyss. That's not one of the sci-fi Fighting Fantasy books, though. Trick missed, methinks.

4.4 - This is a rare prog rock record I really enjoyed and could see myself revisiting. Similar to other records in the genre, there's loads of production but despite the bombast, Supertramp exhibits something that eludes many other prog rock acts: restraint. Movements within songs feel cohesive to the whole. Relative to other prog rock records, instrument layers aren't crammed on top of one another. Rather, they are arranged strategically to accentuate melodies against a relatively spare background. I use the word "relative" frequently here because, again, there's still plenty of prog rock excess. Still, the record comes together nicely as a continuous 45 minute listen.

Disappointing (apart from Bloody Well and Dreamer). I know the hit singles, so was expecting a kind of 10cc/Steely Dan hybrid, but this was more proggy. Not bad, but I'll probably prefer Breakfast in America with all the pop hits.

Decent. It's interesting that I will listen to long, exploratory / progressive songs from some bands and love them (Pink Floyd, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater sometimes) but it's not universal, I didn't have much patience for the drawn out musical movements on this album, or other bands like Yes. Huh.

Criminally good

Bit more my speed. Decent album, nothing really stands out though, kinda jammy. My favorites were Dreamer and Asylum, and tge sax man going HAM on Crime of the Century. Probably won’t be in my regular rotation though.

Classic Supertramp here, wonderful mild MOR Prog Rock with some excellent tunes my Favourite being "School" "Rudy" "Hide In Your Shell" but there isn't a bad track on this Album. I remember the first time I heard this album, it was 1975 in a friends bedroom and we sat pondering on what the words to Rudy and "Bloody Well Right" were all about... Ah twas such a simpler time! Now the lyrics of songs need no debate!

What an introduction. Davies' wailing harmonica was so good, they used that instrument as the main intro to side two of Breakfast. "School" shows us exactly where they were in '74 - bridging the gap between prog and pop. What follows is a great album, showing us some serious rock, those Wurlitzer pianos, some thumping good rhythm, and a balance between art, rock and pop that few bands have managed. Somehow Hodgson's voice doesn't annoy, while Davies always has that extra bit of bite that makes him one of my favourites. Then it finishes with those piano chords! Simple, unadorned, powerful, memorable. So what do you do? Turn it over and listen again. Oh yes.... probably the best cover of any album, ever.

Played it through a few times and it didn't grip me. Seemed a bit ponderous. However, I like Steely Dan, so I probably owe it a few more plays though. Sounded nice and 70s, but I also felt disengaged from the music and the lyrics. Also, why does every song need a piano ballad section?

Those Transatlantics recorded with these hippy dudes in the woods near Mt. Pleasant once. I think it was called Woodshop Studio. Anyway, they were really pushing Supertramp on me. The one guy made me a CD-R containing every Supertramp record in low-quality MP3 format. I never really listened to it. This is a great record. The sound. The grooves. The vocals. I don't know where it fits in their catalog, but it has to be a peak moment, right? I expected a lot more cheese. But this is music deserving of a serious listen. I like how there are delicate and quiet interludes/breaks, broken up by meaty crunched out choruses. A band with a lot of instrumental depth. The first two tracks are paced in a way that makes it clear a serious listen (not while working) is warranted. I'll return for another listen, without a doubt.

They're a really talented group of musician's - and I actually enjoy their music to an extent. Still, they seem like the poor-man's Queen. It's decent "orchestral rock" (if that's a thing), but in the context of all the other bands at the time, I'm not sure what makes them special.

I remember this album was still massively popular throughout the 80s and of course for good reasons: classic album from the 70s when Supertramp released a whole string of these perfect popalbums.

The singles still sound pretty good, but I did not really vibe with the album overall.

Neither Rick Davies nor Roger Hodgson were tramps, let alone some kind of super-tramps escaped from a dying world or bitten by radioactive spiders, only to wander the English countryside aimlessly homeless. Despite this distinct lack of actual trampiness, these young lads from comfortable families named their fledgling band after the autobiography of Welsh writer W.H. Davies (no relation?). Of course, to a modern audience the tramp reference is even odder, as for some reason a term around for centuries to refer to homeless vagrants is now, at least in the states, more often used to refer to a woman who has "many casual sexual encounters." A word that saw its peak usage in the late 1800s is now coming back again with a different meaning in the 21st century. And Supertramp a blip in between that made no discernible impact on language usage. Regardless of linguistic history, if you put Elton John, Pink Floyd, and Queen in a blender and spit out something that has elements of all three but none of the star power or hit-making ability of any of them, you'd get Supertramp. "Crime of the Century" was fine, enjoyable even, but it seemed to pale in comparison to its contemporaries. A little too much jazziness sometimes. Apparently their earlier stuff had more of a prog-rock feel, with a shift to a poppier sound with this album. I'd be interested to hear the earlier stuff.

I had almost forgotten about these guys. This album was a radio favorite with Dreamer, School, Bloody Well Right. Piano pop with a bit of a prog edge. Holds up pretty well after all these years. They had a very distinctive sound… maybe the Spoon of the 70’s? Probably not….

p325. 1974. 2 stars Straight up I have to say I have always hated Roger Hodgson's voice. Every time he opens his mouth I just want to punch him to make him shut it. It's like chalk being drawn down a board. I also don't like electric piano, which is a major part of the band sound. And somehow the cheesy sax makes things 10 times worse. So, this album starts at a major disadvantage. Shame really as musically its OK, tight clean production, but suffers badly from prog-rock wank solo pretentions. And as usual with mid 70s albums, a lot of the songs outstay their welcome. Well done of its kind, and some good tunes, but that voice and tinkly piano... ffs. 2 stars.

Don't think I've ever listened to Supertramp before - I was expecting some fairly straight ahead classic rock, but they're actually pretty proggy! Could probably do with a few more listens, but yeah, I enjoyed it. Fave track - "Crime of the Century", I think? I liked the opener "School", and the oddness of "Bloody Well Right" too, heh

I prefer the poppier sound of "Breakfast in America", but this isn’t bad. This is one of those albums that squeaks by into my collection.

Hmmm. It's intriguing. It has all the bombast and signposts of a metal album, but is instead arch and witty with lots of synth (or Hammond organ) on it. It has a couple of great songs in Dreamer and Bloody Well Right. I much prefer them later on, when they embrace the camper side of what they do, but nonetheless, this is a tight, but not spectacular album.

I was a big fan of Supertramp in the early '80s, having bought their albums "Famous Last Words" and "Brother Where You Bound" when they came out, and being very familiar with "Breakfast in America" and their previous 70s hits. I've been thinking about how they had slipped somewhat out of my consciousness since then and how happy I was to hear them again. It was really great to listen to an album early in their success. I always enjoyed "Bloody Well Right" and "Dreamer," and the rest was a lovely discovery. But I can't help but be itching to listen to some of their subsequent work.

Supertramp!

This is one that really needs to be experienced with headphones. The dynamic range is wide and listening on speakers I was either straining to hear or clamoring to turn it down. With the headphones, I got more of the subtle sounds and some nice stereo effects. Before this, I was really only familiar with Supertramp's singles and mostly those that featured Roger Hodgson singing lead. That made it hard to fit songs like longtime favorite Bloody Well Right into the Supertramp space in my brain. Listening to this album helped with that, giving me a wider perspective of their work. I enjoyed this record a lot. Most of the songs exceed five and a half minutes and don't stay in one place --- songs I didn't entirely love had parts that I did. Some of the pieces and their theatricality brought to mind Queen and Elton John of the same era. (In fact, parts of Asylum sound so much like Tiny Dancer, that it must be an homage.) I've never really liked the song Dreamer before but I loved it today. Today I recognized a little countermelody near the end and it took a minute to place --- Rodger Hodgson included it as part of the soundscape introduction to his 1984 solo single Had a Dream, another of my favorites. And that glockenspiel at the end! Yes! Glad to have listened to this for the songs I knew and the songs that were new to me. Lots to dig into here and it definitely makes me want to hear more from Supertramp.

Utterly brilliant album! I grew up listening to this as from an early age I had access to my older sister's record collection. Then she and the album moved out of the house in the early 80s and for whatever reason CRIME OF THE CENTURY and I failed to ever reunite again. Hearing "School" again instantly took me back and I realized how much I LOVE this album! I'd spent lots of time over the years with Supertramp's BREAKFAST IN AMERICA album or their greatest hits collections, but for whatever reason forgot about this album. The big hits ("Bloody Well Right", "Dreamer", "Crime of the Century") I heard frequently since the 80s, but the other tracks had disappeared from memory. Oh CRIME OF THE CENTURY will you ever forgive me for neglecting you?! What an incredible album this is! And how much have I missed the deep cuts of this album! As soon as I heard them it was like being reunited with a long-lost friend. I am kicking myself for all the lost years! So so so so good as an album! The hits are 100 times better in context. Today I fell back into an even deeper love with this incredible album. Thank you for reuniting me with this amazing record!

Sounds like a bunch of clever clogs trying (and nearly managing) to sound like Pink Floyd. Bloody well right and dreamer are the catchiest tunes, but it probably works best as a whole album.

These guys are doing things that are uncommon even nowadays. The melodies and rhythms are often odd but in a surprisingly pleasant way.

I think the only Supertramp song I've ever heard is Give a Little Bit. And I like that song, just never listened to them beyond that. This album was playful and engaging - I like the prog-pop-rock thing it's got going. I'm too high to come up with anything better than that. But I dig it, would listen again.

One of the best albums I have listened to in the experiment. Great dynamics and flow within a great run time. The melodies are balanced so well with the effective instrumentation. A perfect prog album.

Puts the rock (and pop) in prog rock. A very accessible entry into the genre, this album isn't as heavy on jazz, classical, or straight-up weird techniques that bands like Yes, King Crimson, ELP, or other prog bands had been utilizing earlier in the decade. This is really accessible to public audiences, with a reliance on formulas in rock and blues that have already been well-established, not the slightest bit excessive or pretentious. Songs are a good length. 8 tracks that are each well crafted and dedicated to their time. The longest track is 7:20, allowing songs to have plenty of experimentation and transitions without tiring the audience. It's kinda crazy that their breakout hit "Bloody Well Right" not only happened this album (as opposed to Breakfast in America), but that it hit 35 on the Hot 100. A couple of decent tracks but the rest is a meandering mess of self-indulgence. Not a patch on their later masterpiece: Breakfast in America.

Come on guys! I mean seriously! Some tracks are nearly interesting prog, then bland soft rock moments kick in. I don’t think there’s a single track that I find good start to finish. And some of the longer tracks are really boring. Dreamer is OK if a touch longer than needed. Not a super album.

Been an avid classic rock radio listener my whole life, so I'm very familiar with all of Supertramp's big hits. They're alright. I've never cared enough to seek out more of their music. Would rather listen to Rush. Neutral on this.

I'm a big fan of the Supertramp hits, but haven't heard this album before. Was relatively disappointed. I think it might grow on me after a few more listens, but my first impression is about 3.5 stars. A couple of great songs (Bloody Well Right, Dreamer) but the others didn't really blow me away.

Production is immaculate, sounds terrific! It really integrates typical prog structure into a pop-ish (in sense of a more accessible format) song, and the result is definitely interesting.

The intersection of prog and yacht rock, with Pink Floyd influences doing the heavy lifting. Couple of hits; indulgent.

I mean it's Supertramp, you've got to love Supertramp. I prefer Breakfast in America but this is still good. I am being harsh with a 3* review, but for me it isn't quite a 4.

More ballady and polished than I expected. Didn't really speak to me.

This album makes a case for two of my pet theories: 1) bands thrive when they have at least two songwriters with widely different sensibilities in the group, and 2) bands tend to produce their best work when they spend alot of time together in a remote location in the country/woods. This album is a wonderful balance of melodic pop sheen and just the right amount of rock umph. All packaged in sophisticated prog structures with some really nice atmospheric touches throughout. Sure sounds like a concept album even though it may not be one.

This is the kind of stuff I associate with bad Prog-Rock. Really don't care for any of it, not my thing.

Not bad. Easy listening funk

Been a while since I've listened to Supertramp, and it's really nice to hear them again. I was familiar with a couple tracks on this album -- "Bloody Well Right" has such great keys (and it all comes together great) and "Dreamer" is fun -- and it's nice to hear the whole thing. Somtimes feels like Moody Blues and other bands to me that get a little too into the synth/organ extended groovy 70s play, and it has a lot of moments of feeling every bit the 70s prog rock/pop effort it is, can be dreamy/drippy at times, but it's overall really well done and this band has a lot of talent.

One of my first "Favorite Albums". I've loved this thing since I was 11 years old. It was one of my first Amazon purchases, back when they just had books and cds. On a personal level, I feel like it still holds up. It's hard to choose between Bloody Well Right and Dreamer as my favorite. I think I could listen to the musical intro for Bloody Well Right on repeat forever until I die. Every other track is a classic in my eyes (ears?)

Supertramp is a pretty weird band to me. They keep getting suggested to me on Spotify playlist because Spotify believes I should really like them. Sometimes I do, but sometimes their songs really annoy me and I skip them. Anyway, first time I'm listening to an entire album by them and it still feels sort of weird to me. Like I almost like them really much and they're almost exactly my cup of tea, but then something is slightly off and it makes them simply OK instead of awesome. I think this is a 3.5 for me. I'll round it up because I really like the ambitiousness of this album, which I didn't get as much of a sense of on the individual tracks I've heard by them.

It's fine. I think that if I listened to it more, it might go up to four stars maybe. But eh. It was fine.

Well, this goes without saying this is definitely one of the best albums of all time. It is varied and intersting music, and reminds me of my childhood so much. My dad loves Supertramp and it was always on in the car

This really is one of the greatest albums ever written. I just can't get enough of it. Every song is perfectly crafted. Asylum is such a great song, the build up and progression of madness is sublime. Bloody Well Right is a banger to bang all the bangers. The rest are just plain excellent.

I do love a bit of Prog-rock. Love the building up in the songs. Dreamer and School are just great fun songs

This was cool. Nice songs, interesting structures, well produced, great musicians. Accessible prog. They certainly have their own sound. Only really knew the hits before, but would happily listen to more of this band. (3.4)

Bloody Well Right is the only song I knew. I do like the quirky style of this band. The lead vocalist is so distinct. Story songs, very experimental mixing of instruments. Easy listening tracks but never stray too far from the rock.

Crime of The Century is quite dominated by the pop refrains (like Dreamer) , which were still painted with the harmonic complexities and sounds of progressive-rock. (7/10) Favourite Songs: Dreamer, Crime of the Century

New one! Starts off with a western harmonica, cool! Very rocky, yet very chill. Might add it to my Library. Added it to my library. Full of good prog-rock with some rarely heard instruments, at least in rock :D

I for sure need to give this one a few more listens, and I will do so. I think it's cool, Lots of what I feel like are Classics. I never listened to this as a album though. For sure just heard them in passing and absolutely enjoyed them in that vein.

Nothing especially stood out for me on this album. The music didn’t capture my imagination. I found it a bit of a chore. It’s possible prog rock isn’t really my thing.

A great way to start this project. I’ve never heard of this band or this album, but after the first play through I thoroughly enjoyed every track. It started out strong and leveled out in the middle tracks but finished with a bang in the final 3.

A good prog rock album that I enjoyed. Didn't think I'd enjoy too much from this era but here we are. The woodwind instruments were a nice surprise throughout and fit in quite well. It's a nice listen and I think it would sound awesome on vinyl. Best: School, Asylum Worst: Rudy

Really solid- definitely a fan of this genre in general so I will be re-listening to a few tracks more often. That being said towards the middle the songs felt a bit bloated/lengthy. Overall really great stuff!

I’ve never been left so confused by an album. So many different sounds and styles. The album starts well enough and finishing strongly too. Somewhere in the middle it gets incredibly irritating and I feel I’m at a Broadway show that I’ve been dragged along to again my will. But the album is just interesting enough to make me want to go back and give it another listen.

I guess I can more or less definitively say I don’t really like prog? That’s one good thing to have come out of all of this, at least. I’m giving this two because they at least have an ear for a hook, and when it wasn’t interminable twiddling, there was some catchy, bouncy, and kind of fun-sounding stuff. At least these fellas seem to have a bit of a sense of humour about the whole venture. Gotta count for something.

A comprehensive lesson that no matter how many pro forma riffs, piano tinklings and horns you squash together, they're still pro forma. But a lesson no one needed.

нда, ну опять 70-е. больше семидесятых, народ требует. ну бох с ними, пусть будут. тем более жгучую боль при виде цифр 1, 9 и 7 сгладила довольно прикольная облога. Я даже понадеялся, что будет какой-то угарный спейс-рок, но, конечно, зря. Хотя элементы тут есть, проглядывают, особенно на последней песне, очень всё волшебно звучит под конец. Да и альбом в своей целостности является скорее хайлайтом. Начало довольно бодрое и интересное, тоже ребята не скупились на эксперименты. Но затем, примерно с третьей песни, Супертрамп начал меня терять. Даже со скидкой на устаревание такой музыки время от времени слух выхватывал какие-то идеи, которые мне совсем не близки были. Так продолжалось до Dreamer, на котором я уже всерьёз подумал, что мб забить и послушать какой-нить оперейшн майндкрам заместо (которого, кстати, в этом списке нет). Но сразу же после Дримера внезапно группа вернулась в прежнюю форму и выдала довольно качественную финальную секцию альбома. Посему, сделав скидку на время и в целом превалирующее чувство удовлетворенности, готов выдать этому альбому чек на одну семёрку и обещание как-нибудь вернуться и послушать спустя время. 7/10

Астрологи объявили неделю максимализма, так что ставлю 5. Возможно, возник сильный контраст с прошлым альбомом, но даже и без него чуется, что тут мы слышим то, что именуется настоящей музыкой. Насыщенной, комплексной, гармоничной, эмоциональной, разнообразной, цепляющей... вот это вот всё. Конечно, несколько прослушиваний для оценки прог- альбома обычно маловато. Но тут осознаю, что как минимум первый и последний трек прям залипалово годное. Да ёбаный в рот, в списке это пока первый исполнитель вне моего жёсткого диска, с кем бы хотелось ознакомиться поближе. Возможно, с неоправданными ожиданиями, возможно, с разочарованием, но это уже не так важно.

Sounds like someone was listening to a lot of Dark Side of the Moon. Fits neatly in the proggy realm of Pink Floyd and Steely Dan, which isn't entirely my cup of tea, though I can appreciate the intricacy. I feel like it's almost oppressively "playful" in the sense that every song has it's own peculiar production and instrumental choices and look-at-me performances undergirded by a white blues aesthetic that does not appeal to me that much, personally. In the immortal words of Taylor Swift, "All I ever do is try, try try." Favourite track: "Dreamer" or "Asylum" up until about 5:45 when it just goes off the rails, man.

The definition of a 3.5 star album, but i'll round up to a 4 because the first three songs are incredible.

In my mind a concept album, and a great one a that. One of the best openings of an album, ever.

Sick album, I loved this.

Excellent! Satisfying funky parts. Overdriven rhythm guitar against cleaner funk guitar sounds good together. Saxes, wind and piano make it all jazzy and joyful, but there are still plenty of sombre and ominous moments. British vocalist sounds great, and backing chorus jumping is fun when it happens. Makes good use of effects and synths. Remastered percussion sounds surprisingly high quality for a recording done in the 80s recording. "Hide in Your Shell" is memorable with it's sax melody in the chorus. "Asylum" has a really desparate but cathartic chorus from the singer. "Dreamer" is very jovial and energetic, with plenty of instruments involved. "Rudy" is more rock than jazz, without the brass, but then ends on an ominous note with violins. A great album, and plenty of variety in mood, tone and texture. But overall, quite uplifting.

This isn't your "Breakfast In America" Supertramp! This is your prog rock, big sound Supertramp. Still theatrical and fun, but it takes a slightly more nuanced sound here. Admittedly not familiar with their older stuff, but happy to have listened to it. Songwriting is the real standout. Check out "Bloody Well Right"

Enjoyed the majority of this although it crossed over to prog rock a bit too much. I’d never really thought of Supertramp as a prog rock band, but I suppose they are in a way. Some really good tunes on here and it’s a close call between 3 and 4 stars.

Spurs were so shit I actually wasn't able to really have any meaningful thoughts on this but I liked it. 7.5/10

Really, really good. Loved it.

For some reason I’d always thought Supertramp were a sub-Bee-Gees, disco outfit, so now I feel a bit musically embarrassed. Still not sure it’s my bag though. Mark Twain said that “if you don’t like the weather in New England now, just wait five minutes”. I often feel the same way about prog, but in reverse. A song will start and you think it’s going to be amazing but then it goes on for too long and goes through so many changes that by the end it bares no resemblance to the song that you really liked at the beginning. This album had a bit of that going on. Didn’t hate it but just felt like it added up to less than the sum of its parts for me.

Opening thought: this is the perfect boat rock album

Wow. This album is definitely from the 70s. ‘Bloody Well Right’ made me giggle in a good way. ‘Dreamer’ made me feel optimistic which is hard to come by these days. Best track for me has to be ‘Rudy’ though, some fun trippy Prince/Bowie-esque space travel vocals at the half-way mark that ascends into a funky AF string section, via some Miami Vice guitar shizz. I like how unpredictable it is, very-not-Iron-Maiden. Two dongs, way up.

Interesting musically and structurally. Some cool instrumentation. A little jazzy, but rock.
