Heaven Or Las Vegas

I'd totally missed Cocteau Twins growing up, I was introduced to them a couple of years ago, and enjoyed this album very much.

This album is so textured. I could hear influences of post-punk, new wave, and shoegaze in this gauzy dream pop record. I could not understand the lyrics but that seems completely secondary to the purpose of this album. The effect is tremendous; it feels like a warm all encompassing hug that ebbs and flows.

Ah yes, the Cocteau Twins. Makes you want to lie in a field with a pretty girl on a warm sunny day and watch clouds go by.

This has been a hard choice. I love the Cocteau Twins so much a named a child after one of their songs. And yet... is this really a 5-star album? It's lovely dreampop. I listen to it all the time to relax, but I listen to it because I don't really need to listen to it. It just isn't that complex and interesting. And for me, I'd much prefer some proper lyrics. So, I've reluctantly given it a 4-star.

What a great second act the Cocteaus last three albums were: more concise songs, clearer production and even at times audible words. This is the strongest of the three and is a pretty perfect statement of the Cocteaus world - the rest is up to you.

I had never listened to the Cocteau Twins before, and based on the album name alone, it wasn't quite what I expected. But I caught on real quick. Amazing album with such an ethereal sound!

No, couldn't understand a thing at all. I did enjoy the instrumentation and overall sound of this album, but couldn't get over the fact I couldn't understand any of the lyrics at all.

Felt like I was driving through a John Hughes movie.

an unusual album. heaven or las vegas has a dreamy quality that's unlike anything i've heard. the cocteau twins leaned into their ethereal sound. the whole album contributed to the same float-y, vague ambience. actually, i think it hurt them overall since the songs became a whimsical tangle. the imperceptible vocals weren't much help; a lot of it was mumbling. still, didn't hate this album.

I knew of the Cocteau Twins, and have heard a couple of songs over a span of years, so I knew more or less what their sound was. I still found myself wowed with this album. This album kind of struck me as a "softer side of Sears" type thing; it has new wave, goth, dark wave, and synth pop aspects, but all of them are mellowed by the overall ambient, ethereal, vibe. You can hear the inspiration from other bands who dominate those genres, and yet Cocteau Twins somehow still make this all very uniquely theirs -- they don't sound quite like anything else. Sometimes on this project, "ambient" can ultimately amount to "put you to sleep", but not here; the ambiance really adds to the vibe and it just works here. Rather than the music putting you to sleep, you already feel like you're IN the bizarre, ethereal dream, which is much preferable! Another thing that keeps the album from being "sleepy" is the fact that songs are not one-note; everything has a distinct vibe and intrigue factor. The way the vocals are sung here are also intriguing. The words are not super clear, but that doesn't hurt the album, in my opinion. Instead, an already rather spectral sound is enhanced by what sounds like lyrics being sung in an alien language. All in all, a lot of weird things just come together here and make this album cool. I really enjoyed this!

The most rocking album I've yet heard from the Twins and my favorite of theirs so far. Gorgeous vocals, ethreal guitars and synths and driving rhythms abound. It still has an eclectic quality but much more accessible than Treasure. 4.5 stars

It's a quite nice floaty-sounding album. It wasn't what I was expecting at all. I think I had these guys confused with another band who were a bit more hard-hitting. I can't say this is particularly exciting. They kind of sound like a softer, less-interesting Roxette or something. 2.5 rounded up.

3.5/5 Heaven or Las Vegas was quite pleasant after the album we just had. It was very calm and soothing. I understand why it's call Dream Pop, and "ethereal." The synths feel very airy and floaty. The songs all kind of ran together for me because there were any changes in mood, feel or key, but Elizabeth Fraser has a nice feminine voice and has nice vocal control and adds nice embellishments. She kinda reminded me of a young Sinead O'Connor.

THIS is why I'm doing this project. An album of Simlish esque dreampop? Yes please. Gives me nostalgia for things from my youth that didn't even happen to me it evokes an image so well. Can't stop listening to this.

"Fotzepolitic" was the most notable track on a listenable, but altogether forgettable, album. It's obvious that these guys listened to nothing but ABBA and just didn't have the chops to pull off the same level of execution.

This feels like an album Kevin would like a lot. I also like this album a lot. It's early pop music that isn't overly poppy. It got a little repetitive toward the end, but overall was enjoyable. Probably won't listen to this one again, but happy I listened once :).

Even though I couldn't understand a single word that was being said, that album ruled. The synthy dream like sound in the background the whole time was awesome. I am going to say something that hasn't been said in this group in a while: I would like to take drugs and listen to that album

Oh hell yeah some shoegaze. If anyone likes this album I highly recommend Beach House. Over the years I've gone back and listened to this album a bunch and can see the influence they've had. Just great sounds. I love Pitch the Baby. Iceblink Luck always makes me want a cherry coke even though I'm 95% certain that is not the lyric. Just a great album with cool sounds I love dream pop.

Dream pop. Ni fu ni fa.

Perfect. Elizabeth Fraser is possibly my favourite singer ever. All the songs are brilliant with the title track standing out as one of the best songs I’ve heard from anyone. Also my favourite album from this incredible band.

For the first song I was kind of hopeful this might be a Cocteau Twins album I'd enjoy. Almost felt a little new wavey. But nope, I'm still not a fan.

A decent album that sounded familiar to The Cure, at least from the Disentigration album. Felt like middle of the road rock/pop. Nothing to write home about. I'm now seeing they are a UK band and now it's all making sense.

Ah yes, what a pleasure to hear this one again. This album is effectively the gospel for dream-pop, both the genre and the fans. I really dig it, there are some phenomenal grooves and pockets. I can't say that I personally hold it as highly as many do, but I really love it. I'm sure its existence alone is instrumental to so many others that I love, like Alvvays or Hatchie. Like a great farmer, it's outstanding in its field. I listened to it years ago, and coming back I find a bit more to love. Albums like this are just a nice, enjoyable ride, putting me in a perfect headspace. Favorite tracks: Heaven or Las Vegas, Cherry-Coloured Funk, Fotzepolitic, Iceblink Luck, Frou-Frou Foxes. Album art: Really, really love this one. Was intrigued from the very first time I saw it. Just a swirl of light and color, enough that you can see some neon light streaks, and the title font is really cool too. They just nailed the aesthetic so well with this cover. 4.5/5

If you seek to really understand modern popular music, apparently 1/500th (at least) of the work you'll do is Cocteau Twins. This is quite surprising to me, given that practically every song sounds the same. Odd! Title track was cool though

I've always wanted to listen to this album but never got around to actually doing it. I can hear so many influences on this one. This basically paved the way for many of my favourite artists playing today. A very enjoyable listen and the first song is the best on it.

When you hear 'Cherry Coloured Funk' you think, wow, this albums going to be amazing. But the ten tracks that follow are all so similar it gets a bit tired. Still, the wobbly, lofi, intriguing sound is very pleasant, and different from a lot outside of it.

This is fine but pretty inconsequential. I would not listen to this again as it made no impression on me at all.

I *always* had the same complaint when it came to the Cocteau Twins. I wanted more urgency in the music. I wanted harder hits and higher bpms. I wanted occasional crunch and intermittent grit — deliver a line with a throaty yowl once in a while. In other words, I wanted them to be a band that was not who they were. I wanted, craved, yearned for a version of the Cocteau Twins that was more punk than they ever wanted to be. I went so far down this road that a punk band I was in covered Wax and Wane. But, I've only begun to ask myself: Why? It may be as simple as this. The Cocteau Twins make truly great music that I'm drawn to; but as with many things we love, I sought to impose my vision on them, my own will, I could not step back and give them the space to be who they were. I loved them partially for what they were, but I loved them more (and was always hurt by it) for what I wanted them to be. Robin and Elizabeth, I've finally grown up. I'm sorry. I'm only now mature enough to fully love you for what you really had to offer. I no longer want you to be something that you're not. I'm grateful these records are still here for me to come to that understanding. Younger me would've foolishly rated this three stars, but not anymore...full five.

At the time had this album on cassette tape, with Treasure on the flip side: both are timeless classics and two of the best pop albums made during 1980-90. HoLV has a more dreamy sound, much lighter than Treasure, but that's rather deceptive.

Can't get enough of this album. Beautiful dreamy music, interesting vocal harmonies, great songs throughout.

My best friend Ben introduced me to this album a few years ago and I've been a fan of it since. Very good chill ambient music. As someone who loves to treat vocals as an instrument for the first few times I hear a song the gibberish that this album has for lyrics is perfect for me. A beautiful instrument in its own right. Great listen!

definitely a cool vibe

A harrowing outburst of baby vomit restricted my time with the Cocteaux to a listen and a half on my crappy phone speakers, enough for me to start liking them, but not enough to dispel the snide, one-line review I came up with over the first song and a half, which I’ll get to. I’d bounced off them a couple of times for a perceived thinness of sound, a samey, echoey thrum. But this has songs, hooks, climaxes, and some heartfelt melodies. I should listen to it again. My bad review follows. The correct answer to this question is “Björk”. (Sorry.)

Haven't heard this in ages, from an excitable period in my life when classic albums were released almost daily, it seemed. So good, beautiful production with vocals that are both more relaxed and more assured compared to their earlier stuff, and tunes that are almost poppy. Never quite as good again, captured here perfectly. As someone once said, this makes Kate Bush sound like heavy metal, and it's a good trick. Lovely.

This record’s evocative title compares two heavily-lit locales, both quite desirable to many men-n-wem. One’s the perfect palace of the high-n-holy. The other is the celebrated Sin City. The songs serve such a dichotomy with their divinity and danceability. Whether you seek spiritual treasure or just want some quick thrills, this record’s right for you. I've written descriptions for each song below: Cocteau Twins’ 1990 masterpiece Heaven Or Las Vegas kicks off sounding like a spacey Sgt-Pepper-turned-Saint. ‘Cherry-Coloured Funk’ bops with blue notes, the tune technically up-tempo but not really too fast. Icicle guitars twang sharply. Some phase-y sound twitches like the slowed-down “wow” of Owen Wilson. Come chorus: sole angel sings with rhythmic tenderness, her voice frail and falsetto. It’s a touching contrast to the low-n-slow earthly verses. More angels abound in choral rounds of choruses. Divine! ‘Pitch The Baby’ opens ominously. Some choppy rhythmic alarm-like sound, copied by guitar, cuts through the mix with a fat bass funking it up. Two-note vocal route rips through a fast-paced passage each verse. Things change here-n-there, but the main mood holds true all tune. “Wah-wah-wah” wails the baby, pitched up-n-down in the end. Time to dance to an irresistible tune about ‘Iceblink Luck’, a popping song with a wickedly simple synth riff and some rollercoaster vocals. Layered guitars build the tension into a blissful chorus, double-tracked harmony heaving around your head in a dizzy day-dream of summer. The moody ‘Fifty-Fifty Clown’ must have had a bad day, hence the unhappiness of this track. Its pulse pumps on as pinging vibraphone-like guitars ring out around delayed drum-machine beats. The vocals stream freely, a harmony weepy and worried like a stressed-out housewife. The song could quite well be the soundtrack to some synthetic 1950s-New-York-City-in-rainy-night gangster videogame. That’s the vibe in my mind. ‘Heaven Or Las Vegas’ gracefully goes on with two sweet major-seventh sonorities presiding over a shaky beat. The singing is calm yet declarative, strong and self-assured. Majestic melodies soar during the chorus, layered beyond belief. Guitars bloom full out with fuzz and thrumming feelers extending every whichway. It’s like sunshine exploding and coating everything. The bridge brings new gnarly liquid lines of incisive slide guitar. More chorus. Bridge again. Heaven or Las Vegas? Whatever it may mean, it’s all light and it’s all right. It feels good, friends. ‘I Wear Your Ring’ returns to mournful means with breathy synth sadly oozing over latin percussion. Frantic bass blasts in with the entrance of the vox. The singing sticks with a few notes, back-n-forth and back-n-forth, the fast mesmerizing lines of a fortune teller. Multiple melodies occupy a crazy chorus and make for a tough sing-a-long. Final minute music of outro follows a new chart. The singing gallops up in a “hey hey hey hey hey” line that hits the heart with its tight last-minute motion. Fine and fine and fine, the layers entwine, fading. Fade in ‘Fotzepolitic’, distant guitars griming 6/8-style strums under another busy vocal delivery. The beat bounces lazily. It’s a paradise of pleasure or curiosity. It all gets a bit more grim and serious though at the end when the descending chords come out and the words warn again and again the same sentiment, something like: “See and saw / Bounce me back to you, will you?”. Seems like a dream. ‘Wolf In The Breast’ comes the closest to country the Cocteau’s ever composed. Rollicking guitars roll and sometimes slide in this drowsy ditty. Naked vocals sing clearly yet cryptically. Only the back-up unchanging “my baby” can be clarified from within the wash of words. As usual, lots of layers move through the mellow mood of this music. ‘Road, River And Rail’, another gloomy tune, features an unflinchingly doleful guitarpeggio the entire time. Various atmospheric sounds zoom and swoop and droop around the sadsong. For the first time on the album, vocal layers are relegated as slaves to the main master melody. They solely serve as special effects during the chorus, gasping ghostlike in the background indistinctly. Last track ‘Frou-Frou Foxes In Midsummer Fires’ dawns all dramatic. An abandoned piano plays in the opening accompanied by clattering cymbal-clicks and quietly-screaming guitar. Eerie singing reminds me of a regretful little girl confessing to her crimes. A hiccuping interlude shimmers and throbs beautifully over ascending chordal comeuppance. After another pass on this sad stuff, snare drums snap and the music erupts into ecstatic rapture! In this anthemic arrangement, a sturdy guitar strums swiftly as bass-n-drums keep the beat balanced and two vocal lines race around a choral carousel: a low-toned rapping passage pummels on and on as higher-pitched spectral singing hems in each sublime measure. This has to be heard to be understood. The entire structure resets and resumes, the music notably noisier on round two. It puts on great weight and eventually comes to its cathartic close on that absolutely mad abundantly lovely chorus.

A really cohesive album with it's own sound. I wouldn't say it's right up my street but it's only a couple of blocks away at most - I do like me a bit of dream pop. There are several moments when those big slabs of atmospheric guitars and vocals swirl around each other and it's rather blissful. I especially love when the vocals take on a rhythmic, almost monotonous quality (on tracks 2, 6 and 10, for instance); a lovely counterbalance to the weightless nature of the music. Really nice discovery, this one.

Ух как я поплыл-то по течению эмбиента... Очень атмосферная музыка, которая обволакивает со всех сторон как мягкий бархатный плед. Спокойно, чарующе, не лишено вкуса. Единственное - в какой-то момент мне показалось, что альбом "зациклился", а оказывается нет. Может этой музыке не хватает какой-то композиционной изюминки, но звучит она очень модно. Напомнило даже вдруг ABBA немного... только очень меланхоличную.

The Cocteau Twins and their album Blue Bell Knoll were quite popular with many of my peers when I was in college, so I heard a lot of them. Seemed to be pretty good music to study by. Even though this subsequent album isn't one I heard much, it was still very nostalgic to listen to them. No one else sounds anything like this, and it's a wonderful, ethereal sound. Lovely, warm feeling with it today.

Very listenable, at times glorious.

I love the song Heaven or Las Vegas. But that's about all I have heard from the Cocteau Twins until today. The album was a fantastically hazy, lush dreamscape that I enjoyed most of the day. I didn't understand the words, and often wasn't sure what language I was hearing, but I didn't much care.

Has a nice voice, but there's too much going on to my taste. I did enjoy the "Pitch the baby song" tho.

For much of the 1980s, the trio named after one of the more enigmatic avant-garde filmmakers of the 20th Century crafted a world in which murmurs and riddles occupied the territory, existing only to mystify those who came across their path and served plentiful returns for many a fan's investments. Heaven or Las Vegas was Cocteau Twins fraternizing with the mainstream and coming away from it largely with their aesthetic intact. Deciding that accessibility is the key to succeed, they mainly do so on their terms and it is fantastic throughout. Dreamy, ethereal, stargazing, euphoric... it's a shame that they had one or two more albums left in them for, had they continued down this path, Cocteau Twins could have been bigger than imaginable. But it's best that they didn't. Alas, phenomenal album.

Feel bad giving Cocteaus/Liz Frazer just 2 out of 5 stars, but this album just isn't that good. It is even one of worst albums Cocteau's made in my opinion. The tension is gone, it is sweet as icecream. Previous album Treasure e.g. is one of most beautiful albums ever. 5 stars. With band Slowdive Cocteau Twins are the true heroes of dreampop/shoegazer music. And what Liz did with This Mortal Coil (Song to the Siren!) and Massive Attack is unforgettable. But this one: no. Too bad 1001 picked this album with quite forgettable music.

Uninspiring warble

I had a Cocteau Twins album come up a while back, I preferred this one.

I'm not sure I'll ever fully understand people who do not love the Cocteau Twins. I'm sure there are some very nice people, we are just different on a fundamental level. This album is like an old jumper you have had forever that you put on when you get sick, a comfort blanket. The Cocteaus at the poppiest they got, and probably the most fully formed. One listen to Fotzepolitic and I could take on the world. Bliss.

I liked this! Not really a mood I crave very often but I enjoyed most of the songs on the album. I love the synth/reverb/spacey vibe they throw.

Haven’t heard this album in quite a while! Cocteau Twins create a musical dreamscape with unique distortion and reverb while blending each musical phrase together. At times I wish I could hear the lyrics more clearly though and I do wish they diversified the sound a bit more.

Back to the synth, it was actually very well received. Fun album to take a ride with.

Dream-pop, new to me and I like it. The album started a bit meh for me, but the mid and back end picked it up. It reminded me of aurora mixed with the cranberries (vocals mainly) and something else I can't quite identify. I like the kind of swooping atmospheric sounds that do give a dreamy feel.

An early 90s alternative album that has the sounds of shoegaze and feels like something a little more modern. Overall I thought it was okay and enjoyed the simplicity of most of the album. The instrumentals and beats were relatively the same in tempo and didn’t overload the songs. The singer has a good voice although sometimes hard to understand. There were a few songs worth revisiting. 6.0/10

Rock alternativo. Melódico.

It was ok

I have been really hoping this would come up on the list. Over the past few years, it has become one of my favourite albums, and over the Covid lockdowns became important to me in a way I find hard to put into words. The production is fantastic, both warm and icy in equal measures (if that even makes sense). The songwriting is amazing; even though the lyrics are mostly unintelligible, the melodies speak for themselves. Overall I wouldn't change a thing about this album. 6/5.

Dream pop indeed. Vocally similar to Kate Bush (particularly The Dreaming album). Smooth indie, covering chorused guitars, synthpop and other smooth styles. Good unique sound, certainly worth hearing before I die, but I'm still not won over as a proper fan.

Despite a lot of nonsensical lyrics, this is a very cool album and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

A bit frontloaded but it's hard to deny how the Cocteau Twins set the standard for this genre.

Inspiring, deep, meaningful,

Fairly droning and not very interesting to me, can't see why it's on this list myself.

I love this album. It’s so layered and filled with little nuggets that you want to keep coming back over and over again. It may not get as much spotlight as its shoegaze cousin Loveless, but it is every bit as lush and amazing. The phrasing of the lyrics is so intricate as well, it makes it somewhat hard to understand the words, but the feeling is so strong in the delivery, it could be another language entirely it doesn’t matter. I started at a 4, but then probably listened to it 10 times in 2 days because it’s pretty short and I could probably listen to it another 10 times and love it more.

Shimmering sounds, very evocative of the 90s

Did I need to hear this album before I died? No. But it was good music. I liked Cherry-coloured Funk the most, and I recognized Heaven or Lost Vegas.

3/5 it was good, production is super interesting, Melodie’s and vocals are unique, a bit monotonous at times and it’s hard for me to tell between one song and the other. Don’t know if I was distracted yesterday or what but I guess it didn’t grab my attention like the other albums did. But definitely has its cool things just not the masterpiece I thought I would be.

Vibey album! Definitely a few songs that stick out, but doesn’t jump beyond “atmospheric” overall. Would listen again!

I quite like Cocteau Twins. One of them bands I seem to dip in and out of every so often without delving too much into them. This record is one of them, I’ve listened to it a lot without really paying too much attention so this time round a few songs sounded new. There is a bit of filler on this, but the songs that are good are really very good. Frou-Frou Foxes and Heaven or Las Vegas being the two killer tracks for me. Can hear their influence on pretty much every shoegaze band that followed, especially MBV (minus the decibels).

Generic late 80s/early 90s dross, sounded vaguely like a mish mash of loads of other bands. Sounded tinny af as well, like it was designed to be played out of a car radio. I know I say it about every band I don't like but all their songs genuinely sounded the same!

A bit of a low for the list. Forgettable and generic, and difficult to understand.

The album has a very psychedelic and dream like sound which I was not a fan of. I really struggled to get through all of the tracks. I'm sure it was intentional but I hated the production/mixing because at times it felt like they were singing in another language.

Love the Cocteau Twins. The Dreamcore/Shoegaze sound is one that always seems to resonate with me. This album is pretty solid throughout, and has one of my alltime favs (title track). 4.5/5

First time listening to this, very nice sounding album. All around very dream-like sounds through the whole album. Hard to make out the lyrics but still such a very nice sound coming out of the album regardless, not my favorite but not a bad album.

Heaven Or Las Vegas was part of my introduction to Cocteau Twins. I have listened to this album several times, but it's been a while since my last listen. A couple of my all-time favorite tracks from the band are on this album ("Iceblink Luck", "Heaven or Las Vegas"). "Pitch the Baby", "Cherry-Colored Funk", and "Wolf in the Breast" are pretty good too. There are a couple of tracks that are a little less engaging, but I could easily give the whole album a re-listen.

Decent album. The sounds were interesting, and I did like what they were doing with vocals, very ethereal like. However, the actual music itself was soft and not ear-catching to me. It was just "nice" to listen to. None of them really gave me shivers throughout, except for one "I Wear Your Ring" which I did add. It's another album that sounds nice in the background and I can see why people would like this, however, I'm not sure if I would go out of my way to listen to this again. Perhaps as background music?

Love this album, sounds great and enjoyable throughout. No real complaints from me.

I enjoyed this album. Mid-tempo reverb heavy sort of spacey vibes. Jangly and shimmery. Very pretty and very pleasant. I really like how they implement vocal multitracking, it adds so much. Bass is simple and consistent which serves the songs perfectly. The album feels like late night introspection.

Okay, some songs gave me a Twin Peaks vibe.

A landmark album for dream pop. A seductive album that sounds like a pleasant night out. Lush melodies and strong performances all around.

A mixture of Enya and The Cranberries. This sounds damning but I *loved* it. The first time on this I've heard and album on this I'd not heard before and played it on repeat all day. Best songs, Wolf in the Breast, Iceblink Luck and the standout Heaven or Las Vegas.

A group that I knew more on reputation and influence than their actual music, this was my first listen to an album of theirs and I have to say I enjoyed it. Just an all around nice listen and clearly so much of modern Indie music plays off this blueprint. A solid 4.0 for me, and one I look forward to revisiting (and I could see the score going higher upon repeat listens).

I've listened to this album a few times but I feel like I don't usually think about it afterwards. I decided to give it an active listen today instead of using it as background noise... ...I need to add it to my regular rotation because I thought it was great. It's not a perfect album but I would happily rate it a 4/5.

Pleasant Dream Pop that is engaging. It is easy to see why the band is so lauded and why they are often imitated.

Listening to Cocteau Twins from the start, I guess I will always prefer the earlier work. Nevertheless this album is one of their greatest, even if one can tell what some of the words are!

98 / 1069 Evokes memories and times that I'm pretty sure don't exist… interesting. Absolutely beautiful album; I'm a fan of Beach House, but compared to this I'm not sure they're as great/innovative as I thought. Not that it matters I guess, they're both fantastic. Anyway, absolutely worth listening to, easily one of the best albums to come off the 1001 list so far (although, somewhat ironically, I was thinking of playing this last night before it came up on the generator today).

Everyone should know Cocteau Twins! So thrilled to see them on the list, however this album was a disappointment by comparison. Their 1980's releases were otherworldly, carrying us away to dreamy heights on Elizabeth Fraser's angelic voice. The needle comes down on the first track of Vegas to a "Twins lite" - still unmistakably her unique voice but tethering the sound to earth. Vocal and guitar arrangements are less complex and interesting here than on previous albums and EPs, I suppose in the interest of broadening their appeal - this received greater attention on American radio. To me, only Iceblink Luck retains lasting appeal, as it follows in the bright vein of (then) recent tracks like Caroline's Fingers or Orange Appled. Other tracks have a tendency to fade into the background, struggling to capture our imagination. 4 stars for being a decent album, but treat yourself to their earlier catalogue for a truer sense of this band's influence on dreampop.

Another unknown Scottish alt rock band. This generator has a slight obsession with them lately apparently. Never heard of Cocteau Twins before. After researching them a bit this morning I learned they are another fucking shoegaze/dream pop band, and are accredited with helping start the dream pop sound. Now, I've been known to hate shoegaze, so I went into this with low expectations. This "dream pop" is different though. It is like that mopey goth rock /shoegaze garbage in song structure, but with a warmer, more upbeat vocal delivery and more jangly guitars. One weird thing about this band is that the vocals are layered so much that you can't understand what she is saying. It sounds like she is singing in a foreign language. As odd as that sounds, the vocal layering adds a etherial aspect to the music. The singer has a beautiful voice, kind of like Enya in some respects. That added beauty is welcome over the backing shoegaze shuffling garbage. It is like goth but with "hope". Overall, a weird listen today. Not terrible, but not really in my wheelhouse. I understand it's place in the grand scheme of music, but I probably won't revisit it again. Ethereal but grounded. Incomprehensible but clear in their messages. The Cocteau Twins are one of the most antithetical bands I've come across, and this may just be their masterpiece. Elizabeth Fraser is such a unique talent.

Pioneers of dream pop. The production is a bit too 80s for my taste. Slowdive did it better.

I remember having treasure and while it was a very good album it came across as a bit of an unorganised mess in terms of vocals but this is just really good still 4/5 though.

This is my go-to sleep album along with "Souvlaki" by Slowdive. It makes me feel like I'm levitating. Absolute ethereal perfection. Once the last part of "I Wear Your Ring" hits, I'm instantly teleported into the eighth dimension. Ten out of ten, you already know it.

An absolute joy. I almost feel like my life was incomplete before finally hearing this album, and kicking myself for not playing this band back during my college radio DJ days. This isn't dream pop as much as it's ABBA with an edge.

A great album that would be much better suited for when my mind was in an altered state. Very dreamy, lots of wandering sounds, really enjoyed this. The 2nd album of theirs I've listened to and probably their best, but I really enjoyed 'Treasure' as well, they're pretty close in terms of my enjoyment level

Floaty, unintelligible, generally pleasant. I don't dislike this album as much as I usually hate this kind of music. Indeed I can think of times and places and situations where it would be appropriate listening. Stars not because I like it but rather because they pull it off. Too bad the genre didn't go a better direction from here.

A lot of artists I love are heavily influenced by the Cocteau Twins, so I was excited to finally actually listen to them! Unfortunately I don't like them that much. The instrumentation is so dated to the early 90s, and not in a good way. And I really don't like the singer's voice. It's possible this is intentional, but she's not in tune with the instrumentation a lot (especially bad on the opening track Cherry-coloured Funk). Also, the amount of jangling triangles is out of control...

Weird one this. I'm pretty sure they sang in gibberish for most of the album which seems ridiculous. But the general sound of the album was alright, but pretty repetitive. How did they remember the lyrics at live performances? I dunno. The amount of thought some musicians put into lyrics and these rock up sing nonsense and get into the 1001 albums to listen to before you die.

I really enjoyed this album. The opening song was a belter and the title track was listened to repeatedly after the first listen. I will deffo be returning to this album over and over.

A dream pop classic, or so I hear. It lays on the 80s sound a little thick, with its gated drums and other sorts of production shenanigans from the earlier decade. Wish there were a few more stand-out tracks, too. To me, Cocteau Twins have always been lackluster songwriters, and I'm not talking about the so-called '"unintelligible" lyrics--I don't care about that, to be honest--I'm talking about truly memorable or *dynamic* melodies in individual songs. That being said, as dated as the sound is, and as limited as Cocteau Twins were in their songwriting, this band were ahead of their time when it comes to sonic intentions in the realm of dream pop--they used textures like others used recognizable melodies, or *suggestions* of lyrics where others would obsesss about the meaning and purpose of every word. That's what the "dream" in dream pop is all about, innit? To evoke, entice and suggest. And with Liz Fraser's incredible voice, they had such a wild card in their sleeve to accomplish all this. Besides, the opener and closer are both extremely *strong*, which adds a star to my grade. With an opener such as "Cherry-Coloured Funk", you have no choice but to pay attention to what follows. It's just *a little* disappointing that apart from "Frou-Frou In Midsummer", everything else is very nice, but never *stellar*. I said this about the other Cocteau Twins album we had later on, listening out of sync; dream pop and laid-baid electronica doesn't do much for me so Heaven Or Las Vegas gets limited mileage. Objectively fine and easy to have in the background, but I need more from my music. 2.

Another good album, and one that I hadn't heard of. Equally good for having on in the background during work and for actively listening to. I don't quite get why I like it, it's definitely an overall construction thing rather than any specific part of the music or individual track being out of this world. Her voice is nice, the stuff behind it is verging on psychedelia. And it's really consistent, solid tracks pretty much from start to finish. Top end of a 3, missing a standout element, but I will be listening to this plenty more.

The best thing about this album is that it was only 37 minutes long. You cannot understand the lyrics. The music itself is just eh. It is not good. No reason to relisten.

Les Cocteau Twins nous proposent une nouvelle fois leur bouille Kate Bushesque pendant 30 bonnes minutes, avant de se décider d'enfin lancer leur album sur le dernier titre. Totalement insuffisant, ce qui leur vaut un 3/5 affable.

Just not my vibe

I was excited about this one because I've been meaning to listen to the Cocteau Twins for a long time. I know a lot of friends who dig their music but for some reason just never took the time. I really like this album, very shoegaze and chill. At the same time, due to the relaxed vibes of their music not a lot stood out on first listen and it served more as good background music while working. I liked it enough though to listen again and heard more the second time through. Solid album, planning to give some of their other albums a listen. Standout Tracks: Cherry-Coloured Funk, Heaven or Las Vegas, Fotzepolitic

This was a challenging 1001 listen for me. Treasure is without a doubt the pinnacle of my 1001 albums experience so far. It is something I will hold close for all time. It may have even wiggled its way into my top ten albums. So to park another Cocteau Twins review alongside it isn't really fair. Soaked in reverb, with a few more audible lyrics that I was expecting, Heaven or Las Vegas is a nice foray into the landscape that bridges the 80s and 90s. I can hear sections that influenced bands like Belly and other charming Indy acts. Is this the birth of shoegaze? It is lovely and easy, but not my favourite child.

I really enjoyed most of this - some lovely melodies, great mood-setting songs.

Definitely a step up from most of the circa 1970 stuff on the list, but by no means is it Cocteau Twins’ best stuff.

Absolutely loved this. What a surprise - struggling for adjectives, but I think 'bewitching' is close enough. Pearly dewdrops drops was a jaw-dropping moment for me, but that was 35 years ago and I never followed it up properly, so the Cocteau Twins just fell outside my radar. What a shame, because this is great. Loads of beautiful melodies to send shivers down the spine.

Beautiful, ethereal and filled to the brim with some of the bands finest pieces of dream pop goodness. A worthy piece that’s easy to get through from start to finish.

Not as precious as Treasure but still a beautiful jewel. Fraser's voice is something amazing and the music is soft and powerful at the same time. Quite brilliant project in the end.

I just discovered this group earlier this year and I don't understand how they weren't bigger. Love this dream pop meets shoegaze sound. Strong 4/5.

A god damn classic for a god damn reason. This album is a perfect culmination of the sound they invented.

I went into the album thinking I was gonna end up giving it a 2 or a 3, but oh my God, was I wrong. I absolutely love the sound of this album. I think having headphones on definitely helps this album. My only critic for the album would probably be that I wish the sound varied ever so slightly more from each song, but even so, I still loved this album. The 90's are truly becoming my more divisive decade. My favourite song was probably I Wear Your Ring, but it's hard to choose.

Preface - I did not listen extremely closely. Was kinda on as just background noise. This is really chill background noise though. Very nocturnal feel - great for night drives with the windows down and a slight chill. I’m sure this is a lot better than I’m rating it, I just can’t give it any higher from my personal first listening experience.

I expected better from this album because I really love the opening track! But it ends up being quite one note and the rest of the songs don’t seem to capture the catchiness and shit of cherry coloured funk

Sounds like something found in a “Garden State” soundtrack, not the era where hair metal, east coast/west coast, and grunge all met in a musical melting pot. Has vibes of ABBA and the softer songs from the Cranberries, all while having strong French overtones. It’s a chill album that could be thrown on in the background of a slow evening and not be at all distracting.

A lovely, dreamy and beautiful album, but I really can't recall any songs and they feel a bit samey, even after listening to it several times.

Quite enjoyed this. Another bit of a nostalgia trip. Was never a big fan, but reminds me of listening to Peel waiting for the Cocteaus tracks to finish to hear what delights were in store afterwards. Some nice tunes in here (Iceblink especially), but I found the nonsense poem lyrics bit wearying by that point. And the warbling vocals, if done by Mariah Carey would have put me off right off the bat. As mentioned, some good tunes, but the 80s flange & chorus all over everything really dates this album.

I enjoyed the melodies, but preferred the earlier Cocteaus with the impossible lyrics. It felt like some of the magic and mystique had been removed. This album drifted and passed me by - which was probably the intention.

Dreams have become demoted. Throughout history, humanity has sought meaning in their somnolent imagery. Traditionally, people deciphered ambiguous prophecy in reverie, and psychoanalysis held that the more furtive secrets of the individual psyche revealed themselves during dreams. Nowadays, the scientific consensus believes that dreams mean nothing whatsoever, and they are just the result of random synapse firing during sleep. Your bowel movements say more about you than your dreams. But what about dream pop? For those outside the cognoscenti, dream pop is a style of indie that evolved in the eighties, which made melody-driven guitar pop smashed up with reverb, echo, distortion and whatever all the sliders on the mixing desk could do. This also tended to strip the singing of its diction, making the lyrics incomprehensible and the vocals just part of the music's multilayed texture. The resulting emphasis on exquisite, woozy noise made the music appear more emotive than intellectual, focusing on a blissful soundscape rather than lyrical didactics. Well, that's the standard critical line. Critics have raved about the transcendental nature of dream pop (and its sibling shoegaze), how it replaces meaning with ecstasy. Me, I feel some scepticism on my tongue. Dream pop's wilful indistinction usually produced tracks ("songs" doesn't seem the right term) that sounded pretty indistinct from each other. I know that is a partly intended effect, and that it facilitates the understanding of the album as a piece, but I care naught for intentions. It may be an unintended consequence that dream pop's homogenity could induce boredom, but it is still a real consequence. But anyway, the Cocteau Twins were a Scottish indie group that were one of the major pioneers of dream pop, especially with Elizabeth Fraser's indecipherable singing. This, their most celebrated album and the signature album of their label 4AD, exhibits the strengths and weaknesses of dream pop: it has moments of sublimity, but those moments are muted by dull passages that counterintuitively sound rather like the good bits but not as good. The album peaks halfway with the title track, but then gradually yet continuously slips further and further into languor as the album progresses. In their attempt to make the definitive Cocteau Twins' sound, they forgot to add other sounds, leaving their sound sounding less special and more superficial. The whole is less than the sum of its parts. For comparison, when writing the review I also listened to Treasure, the other Cocteau Twins album on the list. Though ther best seconds on Treasure are perhaps not as beautiful as the best seconds on Heaven or Las Vegas, it does have the benefit of divergent tracks.
