Reviews (page 3 of 13)

Experimental, genre-bending, playful, and joyous. Easily one of the best albums of the 90s and an all-time classic.

A classic album, though this is the first time I've listened all the way through in one sitting. Beck is a master at smashing together a bewildering array of samples and genres. At times noise rock, country, punk, folk, electronic, it's hard to define. The singles get stuck in my head forever, and even the lesser known tracks are never boring.

Bonkers. Bloody bonkers. But brilliant. Beck's best?

I only knew Beck as the head from Futurama before this. Becks throwing a load of shit at the wall with this album and it almost all sticks for me. Love the use of sampling in this which I don’t always. Just really enjoyable for me, will have to listen to more Beck

A stonking album, full of killer tracks and complete zaniness, a classic.

Love this album. Beck is a weird dude with weird lyrics and sometimes I don’t know what he’s saying, even if I know what he’s talking about. Just great music that was a product of and driver for the other quirky, alternative stuff that was happening at the time. He’s a unique artist that is instantly recognizable. While I like a couple of his albums a little better, but this is still a classic and one I will return to many more times.

Awesome album, all great songs, except one, but I won't tell you which one I didn't like, it's an easter egg of mediocrity, but the rest is 5-star awesome!

Thoughts before listening: One of my absolute favorite albums from my high school years. Not only is this full of catchy songs, but the production and sampling throughout makes it a truly unique listening experience. This is a poppy alt-rock take on the style that the Beastie Boys created on Paul's Boutique (Odelay was produced by the same people...the Dust Brothers). Review: I have always liked the variation in styles on this album. There is definitely an undercurrent of hip-hop beats and samples, but this isn't rap, with sounds across the board from alt rock to country to lounge. This is a 5-star record if for no other reason than nostalgia purposes, but the high quality of these songs justifies that high rating.

Becks best album. Ground breaking sound.

this was unexpected, love it!

An unlikely masterpiece. Every song is a wonderful adventure. The music wins out which is great because Beck is not a great lyricist. Here his dadaesque slacker songwriting works well Enough to ensure the album travels from party to contemplative surrealism.

I forget how weird Beck can be. He's so popular and his songs just sound normal because that's the way they've always been, but when I sit and listen, a lot of his songs aren't all that normal. And that's a good thing. I need to slow down and listen to Beck be weird more often. The chill songs (Jack-Ass and Ramshackle) are just as great as his let's move around songs (Where It's At and The New Pollution). It's a 90s album I forget about too often. "Loose ends tying a noose In the back of my mind" Jack-Ass might be my favorite Beck song, but I haven't thought about it hard enough. I guess after someone sweeps up my lazy bones, I'll figure something out.

I have a lot of nostalgia around this album, it was one that was played constantly by my mum growing up. So it's hard not to like it, even if I probably wouldn't choose to listen to it otherwise. That said, I think it is an objectively cool album and one of Beck's best

10/10 spectacular

i hvent listened to thi record all the way through in so long. Its still a banger. Lots of parts I forgot about are better than some stuff coming out now.

I was surprised by how much I started to get into this album, so many bops on here!

9/10 Fantastic album. This came out at the same time my musical horizons were opening up, I remember loving it. Beck was very much (rightly) regarded as a visionary at the time. There is something magic about the songs where he & the Dust Brothers blend hip hop, folk, grunge/garage rock, electronic. Shouldn’t really work but very much does. There are at least 6 total bangers on here, although maybe the album is just one song too long? Best: Jack-Ass

I love this album so much, I got married on the 20th anniversary of it's release. That's Where it's At!

SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT that was LEGENDARY. My fav ones include, but are not limited to: Devils Haircut Novacane Where It's At High 5 Diskobox

An incredibly talented original. Love his vibe.

Heavyweight. Nobody sounds like Beck because he’s carved out his own sound.

He might sound like a slacker, but Beck is for serious.

I like the the best reminds me of gorillaz

Boy is this album genius. Don't think I've ever heard this type of mix of rock, rap, and sampling before Beck. You'd never think this is the same guy that made Sea Change. What a legend

Definitely an essential. I find something new in this album every time I listen to it.

Beck. This is a reminder for me to listen to my 90s discs again. Genius and experimentation. Uneven but yields some true gems. That's okay with me. ....and Gladly - Beck is prolific (I like maybe 10-20% of his stuff. But when I do- I really like it.) I was delighted to see this here as I have a copy I haven't listened to Inna decade or more.... I like this album for its very 90s vibe and fun, upbeat GROOVY music (even if I have to skip 60% of the tracks as they represent his depressing tinny grating grind). So, if we're listening for a reminder of that 90s swinging, grooving guitars and smile-inducing feel good tracks, the Best tracks - obviously - are: "Where it's at”; "Devils haircut”; "hotwax”, and to a lesser degree.... “the new pollution” and “Jackass” (for the donkey bray at the end ). I literally skip the rest of the album. RATING: A 5 for some of the best tracks of the entire 90s, but it really should be a 4 if taken as a whole... DOES IT BELONG HERE? yes. **** As a side note... As well as eye catching, I always found the cover art has a fair bit of symbolism (which could be taken to represent emotions or ideas) in relation to artistic performance. It's not too far a "leap" to see the dog performing a tricks as analogous to the artists performance. What do you “see” when you look at the components of the photo? I see a funny rope dog looking even more interesting as it flies over the hurdle which is on invented human performance obstacle for animal performance of its natural talents. Its is funny and cute too. But why? It also looks fun and interesting because of some juxtaposition (playful & decorative versus assessment & artificial). It could also be a metaphor for so many things. What do you see?

As near perfect as you can get. I absolutely love this album. I’m not sure how he made it work: there’s a mix of garage rock, electronic, hip hop, rap, the lot in this record, and it all sounds very organic. None of it forced, and totally unique. Beck is cool as fuck. This album is cool as fuck.

difficult day yesterday, was rly nice to wake up and revisit and Old Friend. its no longer one of my favorite albums, but i rolled it in the dying days of summer which is pretty much the absolute best time to do so...beck in this period runs on pure Form As Content, nonsense lyrics chosen for their vibe and cadence spouted in west coast deadpan over songs that are constructed out of Literally Whatever is laying around in beck's head and mixing board. very fun album to listen 2 for obvious reasons, and maybe its just cuz im so familiar but i think its ability to pull all the parts into something instantly recognizable, on a track-by-track and album-wide level, is a testament to craft and intuition and also just the weight that those seemingly hyper simple hooks are pulling

An all-time favorite and an easy five

Love the first song

This album really strikes an amazing balance between poppy and weird. It's experimental but not too experimental. It surprises you and you never really know where things are going to go. They could go anywhere at any point which is very fun. It has fun melodies and hooks mixed in with the weirdness too which is honestly my favorite. I also love the genre fusion on this album. It keeps things really interesting.

What an incredibly dynamic record. This album is a master piece. I can't believe I let this album sit on my iPod and my iTunes for all those years in and post high school and never cared about it. On one hand, it feels very "90s," but honestly, I think it stands on its own and has a timeless quality to it. It only sounds like the 90s, because everyone ripped off his sing-talk-rap style. The way he plays with genres is so perfect. One minute, he's kind of rapping, the next minute he's deep in a country rock song. Its folk, its punk, its indie, its jazz. Its kind of everything, but it all vibes within itself and flows so perfectly. Nothing ever really feels out of place. This has a real 'americana' quality to it. Where it feels like a culmination of American music, but not what you expect when you hear the word "americana." It's much deeper than that. Its 'americana' in the sense that he is nodding and incorporating elements of American music in kind of a dry winking way. But it's authentic and true. Totally blown away by this album.

A classic.

I loved the album. It has a chill vibe and it gave me some inspiration in different forms from different tracks.

5 stars easily, one of the best from bzooty to whiskeyclone.

As of today one of my top all time albums. Different, daring, fresh, all songs surpsises not one sounds like any other, a masterpiece only one single I remember, beck is a genious and should be treated like rock royalty.

What has not been said about this album that I would be of interest? It's a classic that continues to be relevant and fresh through the years. This album is created by exploring all reaches of the noise spectrum. It is unapologetic in it bite, making the listener produce an audible "what the fuck did I just listen to?" Without the fatigue, prodding, or pretentious notes, Odelay is not peak Beck. It's just Beck. And Beck is pretty good at this sort of thing.

Great album

Wow, I know so many songs from this album but have never listened to it all the way through until today. This album is a knockout. So much diversity in sounds, it's rough and grungy, beautiful and poetic, and funny and thoughtful. It's no surprise why he became so iconic coming off this after his debut. A total masterpiece.

This is truly a recording that deserves to be on the 1001 list of greatness

Another fun album. Dug it!

I enjoyed the album. I remembered a couple of hits but was excited to find some other songs in the album I liked

Very nice!

It straddles the line between genius and silliness so beautifully. And Where It's At sounds too sexy to ever skip. That organ riff. Oof.

Still awesome.

Fuckin epic

When I listen to this it makes me feel like it's summer 2023 again,, weird time

Lovely, chilled out vibes from this album. Very summery. Will definitely be returning to this one. Feels like a slightly more sophisticated Eels album.

Just loved this album when it came out in the 90's and sounds just as good now.

This is the first CD I bought when I got my Sony Discman for my birthday. Phenomenal album that helped shape my love for alternative music.

"Going back to Houston Do the hot dog dance Going back to Houston To get me some pants" YES! Everything. 5! Note: There's a song called "Readymade" which is a term coined by one of my absolute favorite artists of the 20th century, Marcel Duchamp. Can I give this a 6?

Nice score today. I listened to this album a lot in college and was pleased to find it’s stood the test of time for me. Beck has a quirkiness that I dig, and his songs are unique and fun and rockin. Loved it.

Topper.

Love this!!

Love Beck, he is one of those artists that could only have existed in the 90s

Hyperactive, anarchic, but absolutely fluid with unexpectedly nuanced songwriting.

This album is great. It's so fun and quintessentially 90s. I love the experimentation and the consistency. It's got a great vibe. I enjoyed it so much I listened twice.

This album is so consistent. Every song is good! I've always liked Beck, and I've heard many albums, but never got to this "popular" one. It was a great experience, hearing the album in full. Liked songs added: - Devil's Haircut - New Polution - Where It's At - Minus - Sissyneck

One of those few, 10/10 records. It's difficult to adequately convey how weird, interesting and refreshing this was when it came out. All of the meticulous details, from the added crackle and pop of a vinyl record, to the vaguely out-of-tune bass on Minus, to the sound of a robot short-circuiting whole breakdancing at the end of Novacane... A huge breath of fresh air after a couple years of huge labels trying to cash in on grunge.

One day in high school we were running track. I had stopped for a rest and an acquaintance begged for my DiscMan so she could had something to take her mind off the boredom of laps. I had the Odelay CD inside and warned it might not be to her taste; she said she didn't care, she just needed "anything". Anyway after one lap she practically threw the DiscMan back at me lol.

‘Flash dance ass pants’

listened 2x on 4/22. great. 4.6/5

best beck

Didn’t know I loved Beck!

Beck is such a unique artist. I love how he can just let loose on an album like this and do SO many things while still having a cohesiveness. This album is funky, it's weird, it's accomplished, it's zany, it's engaging. How does he manage to blend so many genres so seamlessly? Something like Hotwax is a perfect encapsulation of this, mixing up country, rap, electronica, all sorts - and making them work together. Lots of great (multi) instrumental work here, sax, drums, guitar, organ keys, harmonica and more. So much creativity on display. It's great. 4.5 rounded up Ps: Shout out to the awesome album cover Pps: Odelay IS a word. Just look it up in the Becktionary.

Very different at the time. A new genre

I'd rock this in the Catskills

I love Beck and I love this album. Beck is unique and cannot be replicated. Funky beats, great vibes, killer sounds, what more can you want?

A perfect genre bending eclectic post modern masterpiece.

Groundbreaking

i likey the crazy.

Trippy infectious beats. Very creative.

Exceptional hooks. Odd lyrics and humor. A re-invention. Kudos.

Bangers.

ganz grossartig, ein highlicht der 90er

just a dang perfect album

Devils Haircut, Hotwax, Novacance, Jack-Ass, Where It's At, Sissyneck, Ramshackle... + la pochette.. 5stars bravo. Belle année 1996

Good one, the right energy I needed this morning

I love this album. It’s weird, eclectic, catchy, dissonant, it’s so many contrasting adjectives all at once made to work by an inspired confident performance by Beck. This sounds cool today, I can’t even imagine how nuts it was to hear this when it came out. Top tracks: Devils Haircut, Lord Only Knows, The New Pollution, Novacane, Jack-Ass, Where It’s At, Minus

A classic of my youth. Masterful production by Beck and the Dust Brothers. Not quite as innovative as it felt in 1996 but still a classic.

A perfect smorgasbord of Beck's sounds and lyrics.

That was a damn fine album. I have no idea why I like it so much but I’ve listened to it several times. I don’t care for the opening radio hit but wow the next four songs are so good.

I haven't listened to Beck in a while but I could easily binge listen to his stuff.

One of the best albums of the 90s. Innovative and original. A complete masterpiece.

Such a good album. The bonus tracks on the deluxe edition are great too and if I could choose some of those tracks to replace some of my least favorite on the album then this could be a perfect album. Rating: 4.9

This one is still in regular rotation for me. Love it.

Basically my brain 24/7

This album was amazing. Still holds up. I had forgotten about it, but enjoyed every song.

I can appreciate how challenging this record might be for a first time listener, 25~ years after its release. It was difficult back then, too. However, letting its oddity wash over the ears can make for a transformative experience.

WTF IS THIS SOUND (i fucking love it)

So good. I like his direction after this, too. Midnight Vultures, Sea Change and Guero. A lot he can do with a good groove. 4.5/5

A genre bending whirlwind, a great outing by Beck with help from the Dust Brothers. One of the best albums of the 90’s.

Awesome! Lots of great tracks

This has been been in my regular rotation since it was released. Still sounds great.

It's an old school Beck album...either you'll love it or you'll hate it. Lots of weird samples and lyrics. At first blush it sounds like chaos, but if you really listen it all comes together to create a coherent soundscape. Beck's always been one to push the limits and do his own thing. It's like if They Might Be Giants merged with the Beastie Boys. We need more musicians like Beck. Standout tracks: Devils Haircut, Lord Only Knows, The New Pollution, Where It's At, Ramshackle

Feel like I may have underrated this one prior to giving this a full relisten. Pretty great

So good!

All over the place and I'm here for it. Glad I took the time to give it a listen!

Perfection.

Sounds super different to the last Beck album that came up on this (but I am no Beck expert), deffo coming back for more now

Solid gold.

a wonderful medley of genres, rap, blues, folk, even electronic aspects. very nice listening

It's a classic!

Loved. Very nostalgic for me, but I'm always a fan of Beck (except for Hyperspace)

This sounds like Cake! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Odelay is a musical masterpiece, breaking expectations with intricate edits and surprising samples. Its organic feel and dynamic blend of fun and funk showcase the artist's versatile talent, dispelling any notion of a one-trick pony. With both beauty and talent, Beck proves to be the complete package. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 9 STAND OUT TRACK - Sissyneck

This is not my kind of music, too punkish. I did like one track Jack-Ass and even added it to my playlist.

Quirky classic.

Devils haircut and other tunes make this a classic. Combination of mad sounds and crazy surreal lyrics held together with cosmic groovy glue.

Fantastic. This album was on BBC 6 Music in full the other night, so I happily listened to it twice this week. I'm too tired to review it properly, so you'll just have to trust me that it's good.

OK, this one is fun. Actually one oft the albums I grew up with, I didn't listen to it in quite a while. It has this typical 90's alternative rock thing going, that is unmistakable. Beck also has his own style, which really shows in this album.

Beck was one of the first artists I can remember cramming my mp3 player full of. I could only store around 100 songs, but had a handful of tracks from Odelay. Something about the blend of goofy humorous lyrics and non-sequitur noises on top of incredibly catchy hooks led me straight down the path of wanting to discover more music like his.

obviously influenced by a variety of genres, so it’s experimental, catchy, fun - so glad I for this first listen (from my birth year!)

Beck was one of the greatest to do it! Such amazing songwriting and production all over this thing. The delivery Beck deals out is so iconic, it’s both and hilarious and upsetting that he went on to make such boring folk music after being so quirky on this album.

Truly awesome.

Have listened to this album maybe 1 or 2 times before in the past but never really "listened". I like it a lot, a lot of cool stuff and interesting songs.

I like this album a lot. It's kind of weird, lots of beeps and boops and noise throughout. Hotwax feels like a successor to Loser. I was already familiar with The New Pollution, just from Spotify pushing it to me, and I like it a lot. Derelict is very odd in a good way. Sounds like very few other types of music. I was also already familiar with Where It's At. Pretty good but not my favorite song on this album. I like the whistling opener on Sissyneck. Jaw harp on Readymade is fun. Also the crackles and other noise. High 5 weirdly reminds me of Get Low by Lil Jon. The "three, six, nine, damn she fine" part matches up with "high five, more dead than alive" matches up in my brain. It doesn't actually match but I still hear it. Ramshackle is a nice chill song. Very pleasant. I had to listen to Jack-Ass and Diskobox on YouTube. Jack-Ass is pretty good. Diskobox is nuts. Would causally listen to this album in the future.

Beck is way too cool. Great album!

Favorite Tracks: Hotwax, The New Pollution, Novacane, Where It’s At, High 5 (Rock The Catskills), Ramshackle

A great album, a real classic. I know this whole thing frontwards and backwards and it's one of my all time favorites. Very stoked to get it today.

One of the best albums of the 90s!

Listened Before? Yes Album Art: 5 / 5. Contextless photo that just makes you scratch your head at first. Simple but effective. I used to listen to this album quite a bit in high school, but it has been a while. This is the natural maturation from Beck following Mellow Gold and his (surprise) hit Loser. Still plenty of *weirdness* packed in, but much cleaner production and some more poppy influences. Devil's Haircut has always been a cool song centered around a repeating, catchy bassline and some electronic drums. Feels a lot like Eels releases around this same time period. Hotwax is my favorite from this album. Features a country/hip-hop style beat that somehow I could imagine Cypress Hill rapping over. Eclectic mix that just works IMO. Love how effortless the nonsense lyrics flow out of Beck. The New Pollution is another jam that has an effortlessly cool vibe about it. Derelict, once again, sounds like it could be an Eels song. This is one of the more peculiar songs on here. Starts off kind of like tunnel exploring music and gives way halfway through to some pseudo-Indian influences with a weird droning horn(?) sound throughout. Works surprisingly well. Novacane opens on a dreamy bassline then gives way to a stomp with a electronic sound channeling phazors at full energy. This is another example where Beck hops between ideas in a single playtime and it just works so goddamned well. Undeniable groove. Jack-Ass is a contemplative opium laced track with Beck giving deadpan delivery over one of the more pretty and traditional compositions here. Where It's At is another great one. High 5 is a weird one that feels like it could easily be a Beastie Boys B-side instrumental from Check Your Head? Oddly though, I really enjoy it. I honestly forgot how amazing this album is. Its effortless. Its cool. Sloppy at times, but IMO Beck shines the whole way through. On top of that, it was able to achieve radio success without taking away from what makes him great. So glad that this one exists. 5 / 5. Added to Library? Yes Songs Added to Playlists: - Devils Haircut - Hotwax - Novacane

My first meeting with Beck, and oh boy, what an introduction!

what is this. rock hip-hop or country. idk idc but what I know it's 5 stars baby

Beck refuses to be classified. Love this album.

Beck is awesome, weird and I love all of this

Reminds me of high school and my friend ross.

Glad to say, I've heard it many moons ago. Love it..nice intro tho

Great album from Beck! Very strong alternative, folk and lo-fi sounds that are synonymous with Beck's style. Highly recommend!

The review currently topping this section, mentionning Beck's "thrift store hodgepodge aesthetic', is just pitch-perfect. I have nothing meaningful to add to it, except for one thing: that sample of Them' version of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" on "Jack-Ass" is one of the most brilliant ideas the nineties has ever had. And it speaks volumes that, even without that wonderful electric guitar loop, Beck's song is still one of the best folk-rock tracks to be found in a repertoire already filled with so many wonders. 5/5 Number of albums left to review: 414 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 271 (including this one) Albums from the list might* include in mine later on: 142 Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 179.

It’s a sound collage. This was even better than I remember. It makes me want to sit down and write again. 5 stars

I know almost every word.

Although Beck is placed in my top 30 most listened to artist of 2023, I never really focused on his solo work (yes of course I've heard loser). I mainly know him from Possession Island (Gorrilaz ft. Beck) and from Night Running (Cage the Elephant ft. Beck). I'd definitely say I'm pleasantly surprised by listening this album, but almost ashamed that I never looked into Beck, because this is definitely an amazing album. It contains so many layers and different aspects, I'd definitely say I'm a fan after listening to this album. I'm happy to be introduced to this masterpiece!

Beautiful banger

This was on heavy rotation in my post-college days, I loved the inventiveness of the production and the wide range of styles that somehow all held together over the course of the album. Beck's lyrics are nonsensical yet also convey a mood or theme. This album also confirmed that he wasn't just a one-hit wonder after "Loser", and he went on to have a great career for decades after.

Beck's masterpiece. With production from the Dust Brothers, they create a storm of folk and hip hop, grabbing chunks of any other genre (punk, grunge, Latin soul, etc) that gets in the way. A very nearly perfect album.

I've been a Beck fanboy since this album came out and I'm not going to stop now. This is the first album that I distinctly remember being blown away by reading the liner notes. Best track: Devils Haircut

Did not realize the extent to which I grew up on this album specifically

This is not my favorite Beck album, but I can't deny it may be the most influential. Solid music all the way through.

always fun

I JUST ADORE THIS ALBUM, is the first you're recommending me but I listen to it before, it's a masterpiece

doggie jJUMP

New sound inspired me

Wasn't into Beck at the time. Mid90s heyday. But have grown to respect him as an artist over the years. Thus album is unstoppable. The hits keep coming while the strong album tracks more than hold their own.

Odelay is an album that could only have been made by a relative newcomer when it was made, when the death of Kurt Cobain left a huge void in the industry, and alternative music had not yet been codified into the grungy rock sound that would later typify the late 90s and early 2000s. Odelay is unabashedly weird, and Beck expertly weaves and bends genre in a way that is so skillful that it almost sounds like he's not doing it. His knowledge of music has to be incredibly prodigious to do what he does. His use of changing genre never feels surface level.

This is indeed a great album. It has lots of great songs. Devil's Haircut, The New Pollution, Jack-Ass, Where It's At. And one that wasn't on the radio called Ramshackle. Good stuff here.

Dope 4.5

Fun, cool and unapologetic Beck.

I love this album. The music is stellar, with the catchy ‘Devils Haircut’ and the weird ‘Where It’s At’ being my favorites. The production is great and the samples add to the music. Simply amazing.

I had listened to Mellow Gold a lot when it came out. Just have just been Becker out when this came along. Way better than I remembered it.

Remains one of Beck's best albums. Devil's Haircut is a favourite. The video is stellar. If I don't know what to listen to, I can pop this on, and go from beginning to end.

Koiranäyttelymusiikkia..Tylsää kuunneltavaa.. PASKAMYRSKY... kyseessä ei olekkaan koiranäyttely musiikkia niinkuin album cover antaa olettaa.. MITÄS VITTUA... genret on sekasin kuin intian rautateitä mylläävät maglevjunien rattaat... Ei ole mitään järkeä.. Intialiasmies katsoo....... katse....... oikea-vasen............ oikea-vasen......... radan yli turvallisesti. Aah... rakastan..

Love Beck, this album doesn't miss.

Love beck!!

Beck's finest. And a staple for 90s alternative music

Excellent!

"Odelay" is the fifth studio by American studio musician Beck. It was the follow-up album to "Mellow Gold" and began more subdued and acoustic wiith only three songs recorded and one making this album, producers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf were then exchanged for The Dust Brothers who had worked with The Beastie Boys and Young MC. Good move. This album has everything thrown in it. I like this description of the music - elements of folk, country, louche electronica, old-school rap, noise rock, sampldelia and pyschedelia. Yeah, and sometimes within the same song. The album received universal acclaim and won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album. A thick guitar sounds starts "Devil's Haircut." Great production and a foreshadowing of all the busy-ness in most of these songs. The beats. A sampling of James Brown. A collage of pyschedelia and ending with distorted screaming. "Hot Wax" begins with a country-blues guitar, a sound Kid Rock wanted to become but much, much cooler. The song progresses into almost Chemical Brothers' territory. A spacey, dreamy intro transitions into a Beatles' "Taxman" song structure with a revved-up beat in "The New Pollution." An organ jam. The media and internet polluting. Not so new anymore. Floating keyboard and guitar sounds highlight "Jack-ass." It's a ballad. A jazzy- night club beat. Hey, this song stays focused. One of the few. My favorite on the album. This is a close to The Flaming Lips and, funny enough, The Lips have been Beck's backing band. A melancholy keyboard beginning and then Beck goes hip-hop in "Where It's At." Everbody saying, screaming, singing "Two turntables and a microphone." Robots, Beck, distorted vocals. Heavy scratching. "Sissyneck" is more groovy and bass driven. Slide guitar and country with a hip-hop beat. The album ends with "Ramshackle," one of the songs written prior to The Dust Brothers. Slower, acoustic guitar, beating on buckets, melancholic again. This album probably would not have an entirely bad album if it stayed this course. This album still sounded fresh. Yes, most songs are very busy...lots going on. I typically tend to like simple music with a few instruments and sticks to one or two styles. This is anything but that but it totally works. For me, far and away, my favorite Beck album.

I was not expecting this to be that good, if I review it again I just might give it a 10/10, fantastic

Great lyrics!

Good heard it before tho, haircut was good

I'm biased because this is my teens but I love this mash up cut and paste style

What a throwback! From my teens into my early twenties I was in love with Beck’s music. I’ve definitely fallen behind with his newer releases, but Odelay was always on of my favourites (Sea Change might have been my actual favourite). I’m excited to listen to this today. Songs I already knew: all of them Favourites: Devil’s Haircut, Jack-Ass, Where It’s At What a musician Beck is! My understanding is that he generally writes everything himself, and plays each instrument himself too. Maybe it’s having that specific vision which means something fantastic can be created as there is no dilution from outside sources. Beck tends to be just the right amount of strange and experimental for my tastes - it leans into the weird, but never so much that it becomes hard to listen to. This album traverses genres from alternative, funk, hip hop, and singer-songwriter - but again, never strays too far out of its own box as to sound too jarring. This is a fantastic album that I’d recommend to anybody.

Haven’t finished listening to this yet, but so far it’s not bad! Keeping an open mind cause ion really listen to this genre of music. That being said, it’s giving me stoner, hippie, cowboy vibes with a bit of surfer dude sprinkled in. The instrumental sound pairs really well with Becks voice n style of singing. So far an enjoyable listening experience.

This album felt pretty different at the time, but I don't think it's aged particularly well. Still some good songs and worth listening to, I think this sort of thing has been done better elsewhere though. Edit: Never mind, this album fucking rips. Not sure what I was thinking before lol

I was a big fan of this in high school. This as aged incredibly well. Still an amazing record.

This is a great record all around. Some crazy sounds that all work together and some amazingly catchy songs.

Oh yup

I love this album from my younger days, but I will admit that listening to it made me follow up with Mutations (which I enjoy more for nostalgia or quality reasons).

Excellent stuff

Maybe my all-time favorite of his. Low-hi funkiness and sleazy folk rock-y dance music. DJ Funkypants.

The funkiest imagining of schizophrenia to date.

Generational trend setting album

Classic of my youth. Love the sounds and variety on the album

Legendary album

Listening to this I feel like Beck took $100 to the thrift and bought a bunch of 'junk' including vintage hi-fi reel-to-reels, a broken 80's camcorder, some garden tools, a bed frame, and a didgeridoo, then paired them with a guitar, two-turntables and a microphone and turned it into something great. This album is super catch-y, it's fun and I always find something that I'd never heard before. Love this album. It is perhaps the last great analog album prior to the absolute dominance of today's digital production techniques.

Better than Mellow Gold. The whole album holds up and Where It's At is the lynch pin to the whole thing. Also, check out The Frogs, where the "that was a good drum break" comes from.

A great album. One of my favorite indie rock albums. The album is consistently good with a lot of heat songs.

Fuck it I’ll give five stars this album is dope.

I can't say enough about this album. The more I think about it...I feel this one shaped a lot of current musical tastes over 25 years later. Such an amazing album front to back...the production is absolutely amazing. For a long time I considered this to be my favorite album, and I am glad to see it hold up till today. 5/5

Hell yeah brother woohoo love this Beck fella

This is my favorite album of the 90s

Great album, ended up listening to it twice as I was having a rough morning. 2nd listen was much better and reminded me how unique and inventive Beck was back in the mid 90s. It may be a bit disjointed with all the genre melding but I think that's part if what makes it awesome. It's list wirthy

Maybe favorite album of all time PREFS: TOUT MOINS PREF: RIEN

Masterpiece.

Class album, great to chill out to.

Great album with amazing production

Dude was of his time and somehow way ahead of his team, especially on this classic album. White folk lost their collective shit upon release, with good reason. This shit is so fucking good it almost makes me forget that Beck dabbled in Scientology.

I expected to like this album going into it, but I was surprised by how much I liked it. I don't have much experience with Beck's music, but I'm glad to say I enjoyed this album. The music often takes unexpected turns that leave me pleasantly surprised. My favourite song was Ramshackle.

A weird album from a weird guy. Just like me.

Seminal album. Arguably Beck's finest effort as it is still filled with purposeful experimentation and not the dry cynicism of some of his later stuff. Very much a snapshot of the potential of music back in `96

Classic

T3B 1. Devil’s Haircut 2. Derelict 3. Hotwax This album takes me to a great spot in life. Beck IS the enchanting wizard of rhythm. It’s a masterpiece; it’s also a 5!

Pretty good, entertaining & better than I expected

Really had fun listening to this one. So many different things going on and it all works in one big musical collage. Leaves me feeling with the anything that anything is possible in music. Some thoughts on each tune as I listen through Devils hair cut: great beat Drums sound soooo good Cool random poetic sounding lyrics “Bad” guitar solo When guitar doubles bass and distorted vocals soo cool Hot wax: more noises feedback guitar solo hooks and distorted vocals on chorus “Karaoke weekend at the suicide shack” Love the enchanted wizard of rhythm bit Jack ass- great melodic bass. sonically pleasing textures New pollution- great pop tune. I like all the retro 60’s stuff. Pretty much the same bass line as taxman :) Lord only knows: cool fake out intro Punk/ country. He’s such a great singer but can just throw away a vocal too. Derelict- cool persuasion. And droney stuff. Novacane- sick groove love the sample of the hits on the sus chord before the first verse. So many sounds on this one! This is where I realized the beauty of this album is that anything and everything fits. Not in a cheesy way but beck really beautifully uses stuff from all genres and he treats all these little genre cliches not like a schticky or exploitational way but like a painter that is using all the colors in his palette. Where it’s at- love this one! Another great bad guitar solo I like the samples on this record- I went to Whosampled.com to try and check out where everything g came from. Way cooler than anything on that David Holmes album we listened to. He gave a shoutout to Gary Wilson so I had to check him out -super weird vocals Minus- cool punky grungy. I guess this is the oddball track on an album that’s already weird all over the place Sissyneck- like the country guitars and dial-tone synths Ready made- cool bass line lots of dissonances over it. Close harmonies in the low vocals is a cool sound High five( rock the Catskills) - more super weird stuff all over the place. classical interlude in the middle Ramshackle- Charlie Haden on upright bass:) Bob Dylan vibes on verses. Cool contrast on chorus. Mostly just one chord so when they do the 2 chord it feels special. Cool contrast having a tune this static placed in this spot of the album.

A refreshing return to "classic Beck"

Jack-ass is a favourite

I like Beck a lot, and I have a really hard time pinning down what exactly it is that he’s doing here, because it’s bouncing around and settling between a bunch of different stuff. Definitely putting a pin in this one to come back to and connect influences up to, I would’ve figured it to have come out a solid 8 years after it did. After some time thinking about it, this came out only something like a year before Lonesome Crowded West, and the two albums are definitely sitting near each other in my mind

Classic that I could throw on any time

Beck slaps

Discazo.

Absolutely classic album of the nineties. Way ahead of his time, his sound influenced a lot of acts down the road.

An incredibly solid album, though personally a few rungs down the ladder when I want to listen to some Beck. Just great to have so many genres and styles mashed together and come out sounding so good. I need to be listening to the other 1001 albums, but I just want to listen more Beck now...

No one is creative in quite the same way as Beck Hansen. His music is incredibly adventurous while also being very deliberately crafted. It has a loose and diverse feel stylistically, floating effortlessly through sounds and genres like colors on a painter's palette. The songs are funky and groove-full, blippy and noisy, insouciant but playful, and gleefully strange. This is an incredibly engaging and fun album to listen to. Fave songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): The New Pollution, Where It's At, Devils Haircut, Ramshackle, High 5 (Rock the Catskills), Lord Only Knows, Sissyneck, Hotwax, Readymade, Minus, Derelict, Novacane, Computer Rock

I love this album. All of its weirdness is perfectly aligned.

Boy I've not heard this in ages and it's great to hear it again. If anything it's better- a post-modern eclectic mixture that rolls on never staying in one place. I can understand it doesn't appeal to all tastes but it appeals to mine. Kinda grungey and laid back folky with samples and splurges and hooks that disappear off.

It's not often a musician comes along and writes fundamentally new music that is still "listenable". The really great thing is Beck has done it more than once. There are lots of guys like Glass and Reich who break the boundaries, but their music isn't "listenable". It's studiable, if that's a word. I would literally use Reich to clear a restaurant of stragglers after closing.

Holy crap what genre even IS this?! Obviously we are heavily rooted in alt rock here, but he really loves to experiment with sound bytes and styles in a very tasteful way. I love the ebb and flow of pure chaotic screaming to a smooth country tune, to 90's rap and DJ scratches, to an Arabian desert, to electronic beeps and boops!?! I really love this and he deserves all of the recognition he has received.

Looks like I gave the other 2 albums 5 stars so while I was thinking 4 I might have to bump it up and just call myself a fan. The singles are great and I'm sure I'd discover a few more faves with more time.

It's like every existing genre in the '90s got together and threw a party. This mess has no business being this good! PS. The deluxe version's cover seems more fitting for this album.

Þessi plata er eiginlega einn stór banger. Elska sándið. Elska ryþmann.

Listen to this album countless times in high school, love Beck

Excellent. Varied grooves, song structures, instrumentation. Really inventive and a great listen.

Perfect

Excellent

Iconic. One of his best

Very very very different to what I was expecting, my only previous exposure to Beck was Mermaid Avenue so. Beck sounds a lot cooler than he looks , which is lucky cos he looks a bit of a twat. Such a wide range of influences and styles but all blended together so cohesively, on another couple listens it probably will be a 5/5 so fuck it.

Beck's 5th studio album was in my opinion his best. It encompasses many styles of music and is a joy to listen to. Easily one of my top 20 albums of the 1990's.It’s chaotic, eclectic, inspired, and occasionally lucid and beautiful.Rap, grunge, blues, folk and country, garage, rock, electro, exotica, old-and pinches of noise rock are the ingredients that make this album into one beautiful big mix of magic.

Really nice easy listening album

Two Beck albums on consecutive days, what could be better? This album was one that I loved when I was younger, and it really holds up. The Dust Brothers were the perfect pairing for Beck. Everything on this album just works. There's not a single song that I don't enjoy or that doesn't fit 5/5

so I listened to his first two albums to get ready for this (his third one) first album was Mellow Gold, punk meets indie, like a pre-Hobo Johnson 10/10 second album took a SHARP turn into blues territory, pretty good 7/10 now this third album goes back to the style of the first one for the most part, I’ll give it a 9/10, really good

Such a great, diverse, funky record. One of my faves from my fave Scientologist.

A really good album post punk can be very divisive but this is just good music played well it doesnt soften too much that it loses its roots

I am familiar with Beck and this album has been living in my library since it was new in the 90s. I am a fan! I enjoy the mixing, sampling, and the variety of musical style performed by this artist.

I capital L-O-V-E about half the tracks on this album. The loud, fuzzy downbeat of Devil's Haircut is a tremendous start for an album and the rest of the song is great --- gotta love a song with the word "leprous" in it. I also love the lyrically absurd Hotwax ("in the chain-smoke Kansas flashdance ass pants") and its extensive instrumentation --- there's some jazzy Charlie Brown piano in the background for just a few seconds near the ass pants line and some steel guitar that are both just delightful. Jack-Ass and Ramshackle are mellow, almost plaintive, and lovely. My other faves include The New Pollution (of course) and Where It's At (of course of course) and also the country-tinged Sissyneck. Beck's varied instruments and styles, clever sampling, and singable tunes make me a fan.

One of my favourite albums ever

One of the only CDs I had in my car for a long time. Listened to it many times, still one of my favorites.

When I first heard Beck, I thought this acoustic guitar-playing skinny white "loser" wouldn't amount to much. He had a hit and I didn't care for his music at the time. Boy, was I wrong! He has created an incredible catalog of critically acclaimed albums, it's music in a wide range of genres and his influence on popular music can't be denied. He has released some flat-out great records and Odelay might be his best! I reserve my judgement until I listen to all his albums.

Love it.

This was a favorite of mine in high school and still holds up well. If anything I appreciate it more now. He is a master of seamlessly integrating disparate noises, sounds, screams, etc into songs in a way that feels effortless, and somehow correct.

Siempre Beck

Yes, Beck was great on this.

I love that Beck has always just defied boundaries. This album is now exception. Still as fresh as day one. Love that extended bonus content too.

I put Beck in the rare air of Miles Davis, Prince, Trent Reznor, and a few others. Creative and talented on a different level.

I like it, will remember it. That is a sign i heaven, and I buy it if I find it to resonable prices ;)

It's Beck...it's great.

Well it was Rock ? Good one actually... something different great lyrics ! A long one appearantly.

holy shit that was weird

Love this album

Dope tbh

Very cool album!

beck has a way around creating nice lyrics and mixing them with perfect tunes. love it.

Most radical.

Where has Beck been all my life?

This was great. So much more than just the singles.

One of my favorite albums. Unique and weird and quirky and funny and funky. It was awesome then and it’s awesome now.

Singing along with every word. I had this album from its release day. Fabulous in its entirety.

Great album, full of memorable radio singles

One of my favorite Beck albums. Little of everything, and songs that get stuck in your head.

Great Album! I'm also a fan of Midnight Vultures.

Very much enjoyed this.

Probably my favorite Beck album. It’s what he’s known for, genre-surfing. It’s got hip hop, acoustic, electronic, indie rock, all of it. If you are going to recommend a Beck album, it’s most likely this one. Favorite track: Devil’s Haircut Least favorite track: Computer Rock

Great album!!

Heard it before. Nice nostalgia. Better than I remembered.

Love this man

I like the instrumentation a lot, there’s some really cool samples and beats (guessing from the Dust Brothers) and some odd but fun grooves. Some cool effects to go along with some eccentric lyrics. Like his deep voice and some of the country inspired tunes. Not as strong at the end. Still a really good album though

really cool album

Still making my way through it. Preferred guero but this is pretty cool

Not really listened to Beck before but I dig it. I like all the funky found sounds and experimental vibes, will come back to his one

I hadn't really listened to Beck before and the front half of this album was a blast. I really felt connected to the musicality, even with the simple beats. Normally this kind of stuff would be a whatever but there's some special sauce that elevates this. 4/5

Like the music. Definitely an unusual Album cover. Lyrics imply brokenness.

Was a little surprised how good the tracks I didn't know were and how it all flowed. Close to 5 stars from me

zroznicowane

Better than I expected. Relaxed and cool.

A few songs feel a little out of place, but overall this is a super solid record with great hits

Fascinating sound and record. Really really unique and every song sounded really different.

It's such a cool album, but it's a bit too long and there's a couple of skippable tracks. but I'm a big fan and it was the first Beck album I bought, although I think I listened to modern guilt first

There are some great songs on here (Devil's Haircut, Where It's At, Lord Only Knows). There's plenty of filler. The grooves and studio work are first rate, but as a songwriter Beck often feels like he's keeping the listener at a distance and being purposefully opaque with his lyrics.

Peak weirdo Beck. Novacane should’ve had a beastie boys cameo.

Adventurous and entertaining. I also loved the quiet of the closing song. Lastly - I can't believe this album is 30 years old.

Och förstås partyröjarn i Where it’s at för att nämna några.

The Beckster is just starting to hit his stride with Odelay, and he launches another one out of the park. Where It’s At is the most well known hit (and best song) but there are no skippers on this album. All good. Definitely got some Beatles influence with New Pollution (Taxman) and Derelict (Tomorrow Never Knows.) Album holds up very well 30 years later! (4.49*s) Makes me want to go through and listen to his entire collection.

Absolute banger of an album. Beck is often miles ahead of his contemporaries but Odelay is probably the best example of it. The fact that he was producing this in 1996 is a testament to how creative he is as an artist. The whole album is solid from the opening riff of Devil's Haircut to the closing of the odd hidden track. There's not a bad song in the mix and a couple of the hits remain all-timers that scratch a certain itch that only Beck can reach. Beck has never been afraid to do something different and it works to positive results over and over again. His splicing of various styles with annoying sounds, out of the box lyrics and catchy riffs unrivaled. Odelay is Beck's top work among a long career of continuously unique high quality products. Not many artists can be considered a musician-poet who transcends genres even as he reinvents them. The man is still going strong and every time I see him live or hit play on a new release I'm always impressed by how unique and skilled he is as an artist/writer/musician/producer/etc. There are plenty of reasons Beck will always be beloved in my book. Inject this one into my veins. 4.37 stars

High 4 honestly.

4 stars baby!

Tunefully abrasive, or abrasively tuneful? As much as I tend to not like electronica/sampling/rapping, I do like this very much.

The fact that the baby from Nevermind got more famous than Mop Dog on this album cover is a travesty

Album molto interessante.

fav song - devils haircut least fav song - novacane idk this album felt like jesse eisenberg decided to make a career in music instead of films

Where it’s at! Odelay odelay odelay odelay. Yeah this shit rocked hard. Just oozes cool and the production is off the charts. Great songs too. Fire. Feeling 4.5 but maybe that’s disrespectful

interesting sound, would like to listen again

I really liked this one

Baking vookies through the album I liked it
