Classic
questi mi stanno a piacere, 4 ci sta tutto
Decent
Very solid album, even before "Free Bird." Several of these would be on an LS greatest-hits collection.
Several classic songs but the rest of the album is underwhelming.
Some classics in there, and ending the album on such a high note leaves a really good taste in the mouth that lasts.
I Ain't The One- Tuesday's Gone- I like it, very reminiscent of that 70's feel Gimme Three Steps - Simple Man- Things Goin' On- Mississippi Kid- Poison Whiskey- Free Bird- Mr. Banker - Demo Version - Down South Junkin' - Demo Version - Tuesday's Gone - Demo Version - Gimme Three Steps - Demo Version - Free Bird - 1973/Demo Version -
First time actually listening to the whole album, actually not too bad as an album, would seek physical copy for sure, can hear why it's a classic ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This album reminds me of a guy I used to know. What a peculiar experience he was...
4.35
Simple Man, Tuesday's Gone and, of course, Freebird are my absolute favorites from this album
Southern rock at its finest. No slips. Boogie all night baby.
Classic, straight down yer pipe, Southern Rock. Which, I am finding, I enjoy more than its West Coast California equivalent.
A chunky slice of Deep South. A bonus point for Free Bird
Dunno if this counts as Dad Rock but call me Dad because this Rocks
Really like 'Freebird', and some of the others. The album as a whole is nice, but not so magical as one might hope.
Easy listen but still only gets a 4. If there were more songs like freebird it would be s five
Free Bird is a great song. The rest of the album isn't as good, but is still pleasant enough. This just about gets a four from me.
liked this more than expected
This album is so close to being “all killer, no filler”. Mississippi Kid is okay, but if they left that one out, the album would be damn near perfect. Almost every track is a hit, and rightfully so. Excellent album.
Because of it's meme status, I think Free Bird is often underrated as a song. Simple man is country-southern ethics in a less offensive presentation than it often has. In general, I think the album tracks are quite good. I'm certainly not a big Lynyrd Skynyrd person, but if you're gonna make the case for them, this is the album to use (Sweet Home is trash).
Honestly, if it weren't for the fans this would be a great show
Worth it if only for Freebird
A classic that takes the right frame of mind to listen...
Great Album
I was worried this may be a 3 but the album gets better as it goes on and ends with a piece of magic
Classic. Lot's of good vibes.
Solid 4.5
southern pop rock
Quality southern rock, most of their best tracks.
Never listened to this album all the way through from start to finish. Refreshing. Makes me wanna mow grass.
Worth the hype
A great album
I liked: - Use of keyboard alongside the guitars - Commitment to grooves and motifs - Solos - Song structures and flow I didn't like: - Vocals and lyrics Favorite Track: Free Bird
Classic and we are forever grateful of the lynard
If I drove a rusty pickup (beer cooler on the back), chewed tobacco, had an unhealthy obsession with fried chicken and had dubious views on "The Great Replacement Theory" because of something I'd seen on YouTube, it would be 5 stars. So. 4 stars. It's pretty good isn't it.
What a great album! All of the song are great, with most of the bands hits on here. It really takes you on a journey down south. Thematically this is a great example of classic rock, with southern/country influences. Every song has a great atmosphere and perfectly conveys the message it intends to. Sonically all of the instruments come through well. Drum, bass, guitar and keyboards are all represented well in the mix, and are full of great licks and fills. Tuesdays gone and Free bird are one of the best classic rock ballads and songs of all time. Would give it 4.5 if I could, very little wrong with this album.
I mean yea, that right there is some Lynyrd Skynyrd. "Simple Man" and "Free Bird" are just soo classic. I can see myself dancing in the bayou to this entire album. It's really light and breezy listening. I find myself spacing out and just feeling a light level of euphoria.
Classic Southern Rock, with more swing than they are sometimes credited for - some funky shuffles in there, like Gimme Three Steps, as well as a great band with a sly frontman
круто
A good listen, not really my scene but who doesn't like Free Bird?
Quintessential Southern rock. Some iconic tracks...lots of great riffs and solos.
Freakin badass man. Not perfect but has two of the most iconic LS songs. Faves are obviously Tuesday's Gone and Free Bird.
Nice
Damn them white boys can play
Kings of the catchy hook and southern rock anthems. Makes me feel good all day long. 4/5
Didn't expect to like this as much as I did. For a band that is the epitome of southern rock, I was expecting more midpaced ZZ Top boogie, but this had some interesting sound choices (reversed drums on the intro!), some humour and variety. It's a low4/high 3 purely because I got a little bored by the end, but you can see why GNR, Pantera and tonnes of other rock and metal bands were influenced by them. But really, does Tuesdays Gone need to be 7 minutes long? What more do they have to say after 5 mins?
I didn't want to like this album as much as I did. That said, the second half got progressively weaker until we hit Freebird.
Willian: muito bão, mas nem tão bão, nota 4 Vivian:
solid album, simple man is a highlight they really know how to handle steel strings and a harmonica
Simple Man
Seriously toyed with a 5 here - enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. Simple Man, Mr Banker, Free Bird obviously and Tuesday's Gone were all excellent, will listen again
Highly recommend blasting Free Bird whilst tipsy on the way home on the train and glaring at anyone who looks at you.
Outstanding album, -1 for being racist bastards but great music
It has multiple bangers. I know of 4 of these songs already. Very good. Not exactly my style, there are classics but probably a 4.
Standouts: Tuesday's Gone Simple Man Free Bird
It's pretty cult-classic southern rock, which I generally like, so I wasn't surprised that I liked this. Almost all the songs are catchy, but I don't think there's much musical depth.
allman brothers band better but this still has some good tunes on it
Banger, some songs that im kinda meh on but it has free bird so how can i give it anything less than a 4
Free bird
I liked this a lot more than I expected to! Clear favorite track is Tuesday’s Gone and second favorite is Things Goin’ On.
The math on this one is tough. Three of my favorite classic rock songs (Free Bird, Tuesday’s Gone, Simple Man), one of my least favorite (Gimme Three Steps), and a bunch of other songs that, yep, are adequate southern rock album tracks.
4 classics and 4 good songs, the album is solid. Just Freedbird is enough for this album really. Banger. Band themselves a bunch of losers though now.
A really fun and surprising listen. Definitely had some dated southern rock twang, but not as cringey as I would have thought from the band that brought you Sweet Home Alabama. Every song is incredibly catchy and full of ear worms, but the more mainstream hits definitely stand above the rest of the album. Top tracks: Tuesday's Gone, Gimmie Three Steps, Free Bird
Pretty solid southern-rock album. Of course "Free Bird is amazing, but the run from "I Ain't The One" to "Simple Man" in the beginning half is great. "Things Goin' On" as a fine track as it is, but I could not get behind "Mississippi Kid". The piano playing on "Poison Whiskey" adds much to the track that I would not have expected. All around I enjoyed this album maybe slightly more than I would have thought. 8/10
****a good album
FREEEEE BIRD I can't listen to Skynyrd without thinking about the Accidental Racist song where LL Cool J shouts out Robert E. Lee.
I always assumed Lynyrd Skynyrd was a man. This is a great debut album from a classic southern rock band. Hard to deny the influence. For 1973 this sounds great. I didn't realize that the band had so many issues with members coming and going as well as members of the band dying in a plane crash. It's a wonder if the band would have had a legendary career if fate had gone a different way. At least we got Freebird out of them. Any group would have been stoked to make Freebird.
This is another instance of a band having all the songs I know of theirs on one album. Literally half of the songs on here are classic rock radio staples. Makes me wonder how the hell they made it to today, though I guess the answer is they play those songs over and over. I hate to admit it but I liked this a lot more than I thought I would and certainly more than I wanted. There is something about the twangy electric guitar when it's not accompanied by some idiot going on about the big city liberals and his dodge ram pickup and the united states of america. That isn't to say that there aren't shades of the weird ideals of modern country and or ridiculous country/rock stuff in here (Simple Man the biggest offender), just that it's mostly about something else. Equally "southern" but stylistically more than philosophically. The rest of it is country tinged rock, and really well executed. Even the silly stuff like saloon piano solos and the organ sound right in here. I liked everything except "Things Goin' On" and "Mississippi Kid" because it's like they decided to be an average country and bluegrass band instead of a pretty great rock band on those tracks. It's embarrassing to me that I enjoyed this because I know the band is full of assholes, though maybe not at the time this came out. It's a tough one but purely objectively on the music it's hard to deny that it's good.
First popularized by hit film The Devil's Rejects, Free Bird has been overblown as one of the best classic rock songs. This is a solid collection of songs that ate up some time at work. Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, and Free Bird are all great jams. Chill dad rock.
Yeah man. Solid. I forgot how much I loved Tuesday’s Gone. And the non-singles were a good time as well. I’ll always associate this band with Con Air.
Pinnacle Lynard Skynard album. All the hits are certified bangers. Some of the other, non-hit tracks are great too. Ronnie Van Zant has such a distinct voice and their southern style riffs and drum fills are fantastic.
Dayummmm this was so good! So fun. Slapping tunes. Good nostalgia from my classic rock filled teens. Love it
Free Bird and Simple Man are two fantastic songs but I can take or leave the rest.
Nice album!
Lynyrd Skynyrd (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) First album that this band has made, and honestly, this is surprisingly good! This is what country music should sound like, as someone who really has tried to give the genre a listen and just couldn't enjoy it. This album offers some of the band's all time classics like "Tuesday's Gone", "Simple Man" and the infamous "Freebird". Although it does have some lows, its highs really compensate this from sounding boring. Overall, this is great! 1.- I Ain't the One = 7/10 2.- Tuesday's Gone = 10/10 3.- Gimme Three Steps = 8/10 4.- Simple Man = 9/10 5.- Things Goin' On = 7/10 6.- Mississippi Kid = 6/10 7.- Poison Whiskey = 7/10 8.- Freebird = 10/10 FINAL SCORE: 8/10
An acquired Southern taste, much like chitlins, potlikker, or pinto bean pie, that may not be haute cuisine but satisfies a certain craving when it hits.
Good s/t.
Don't like southern rock. Hate most of it. But love this!
Not my personal favorite band but a super solid southern rock group. As a singer in Nashville, I’ve sang so much of their work but first time I’ve heard this album all the way through. Love hearing the muscle shoals studios at work. The muddy guitars and those solid bass lines are my favorite
This has actually shocked me. It seems like an album that was made as a jam session in the best way. Definitely didn’t expect to find it this entertaining. Usually get very bored of a guitar solo but not with Free Bird, totally allowed in my book. May not explore them more because I don’t know if there was much experimentation from them?? Anyway banging debut.
Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album cover is a raw, authentic snapshot of Southern rock's golden era. The photograph perfectly captures the band's unfiltered essence—seven musicians posed casually, dressed in quintessential 1970s bell-bottoms and long hair. The black-and-white image feels both spontaneous and carefully composed, with band members strategically seated and standing. What elevates this artwork is its genuine, unvarnished quality—this isn't a staged glamour shot, but a true representation of the band's personality. A timeless, unpretentious visual that epitomizes the band's spirit. Album artworks rated: 27/1001 Music's great.
The legendary freebird!!!!
A few of the greatest Lynyrd Skynyrd songs represented here. Simple Man, Teusdays Gone and of course Free Bird are the stand outs. The rest are fine tracks as well. Good album to get into Southern Rock.
Felt like I was in the heart of The South listening to this record. It's funny when you know a band from just a couple of songs throughout their career, but you've never listened to an entire album. This was one of those cases with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Obviously Free Bird being the most popular song and still a great tune, but I had no idea that Tuesday's Gone was the song featured in Happy Gilmore. This is a great debut album 4/5
Pretty good sounds
Love this one.
Iconic southern rock full of songs you’ve likely heard before.
I grew up in a rural area. Our town never grasped the love of southern rock. When you went to parties it was Styx or REO Speedwagon or ELO. But just a few miles down the road was the town that worshiped southern rock, especially Molly Hatchet and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Occasionally, my best friend and I would travel to this town to visit a friend and party. The soundtrack for the evening would always include this album, usually multiple times. I believe that's what's called the good ole days.
Great album overall, slightly let down by Things Goin’ On and Mississippi Kid. One of those that is nearly a 5. 4 minute guitar solo in Free Bird? Yes please!
Not bad. I like the combo of rock and country they have. A couple great songs!
I liked this more than I feel like is ok
Yeehaw 4.5
Southern music with an edge. This is a good album. Those Van Sant boys are pretty damn talented.
5 stars - free bird but in all seriousness, just quite a fun album that doesnt take its self too seriously
Nice smooth rock . Good for work background music
Some classic tunes from this offering. Insightful stuff like Simple Man and more irreverant like Gimme Three Steps; all great songs!
4/5
Reminds me of my papa. I miss him everyday
Love the blues elements and even the country twang. Good listen!
Overall: 8/10 Pretty classic album, I don't normally love this style of southern rock but Lynyrd Skynyrd were really great with this style. My friends and I love to make fun of Free Bird but it's actually an amazing song (if a little lengthy, but it earns it's length). Well worth your time! Fav Song: Simple Man Least Fav Song: Things Goin' On
This is a pretty good album that has such a killer ending it catapults the whole document into the stratosphere. I wonder if anyone could, when inevitably asked at a live show, just wow the audience and actually play “Freebird”.
Only listened to half :(
Shockingly, I’d never listened to this album before. Sure I’d heard much of it but I’d never sat and listened to it as an album. This was their DEBUT album. Free Bird. Simple Man. Tuesday’s Gone. The A side wood rank near the top of greatest debut albums of all time. And then it all ends with Free Bird. Unfortunately there’s a few songs in between that although they are good I honestly can’t remember one of them without checking. So a solid 4+ this would get ….. and I can’t quite give it a 5 but goddamn.
Fun album to listen to while doing something.
Pretty good, kinda dry
Lynyrd Skynyrd boldly asks, what if some dudes from the south really liked the blues and wanted to be like The Rolling Stones? It is technically an excellent album and one hell of a debut. Fantastic guitar work, not to mention the piano which I never noticed as much in previous listens. Very well-developed sound and arrangements. And frankly, it is impossible to deny the cultural impact. However, I walked away feeling a bit uninspired. I feel like releasing a searing blues album in 1973 after a lot of more groundbreaking rock and roll came and went is already a little derivative. I suppose you could argue they contributed a lot of refinement, which they did. The mixing and engineering on this album really sparkles with clarity. It sounds great. For what it is, it is great. But I’m not sure I’m convinced by what it is.
so gas. almost deserves a 5. but idk. it’s very close to a 5
I’m actually going to mark this down for the final track. Rest of the album is cracking tho’
70s Southern Boogie - excellent debut album the live version of Free Bird knocks the album version for 6 though
Lanyard Scanyard
Incredible I loved it. Production has aged so well and the playing is top notch
Woooooo I feel like an AMERICAN after listening to this. Good stuff. Classics on classics. And such good guitars.
One thing my exes have in common: they all love Lynyrd Skynyrd. And I totally get it. Free Bird fucking bangs. That said, this album drags in the middle a bit. For that, I’m deducting a point.
Great southern rock band
7/10 Too much filler for 5 stars but punching way above its weight. 11-18-2024
Hard to argue with the slate of singles on this one, looks like they stacked all their good songs on this album
Great band, great album, some classic rock anthems. Gotta love it.
Free bird brings it right up, needs another listen
Very impressive debut! Classic
As Brian Eno famously said: “The first Velvet Underground album only sold 10,000 copies, but everyone who bought it formed a band.” - Similarly, I heard a podcast recently that said something similar about Sublime, except it was more like..."everyone who listened to Sublime went and started a band that was terrible"...I feel like Lynyrd Skynyrd is like that...There was a lot of questionable stuff that came after this record...even from the band itself, however, just listen to this in a vacuum, its peak Southern Rock and its very good.
Why does this website insist on linking you to expanded versions? So I’m listening to the standard version of this album instead. It’s never struck me before how country Lynyrd Skynyrd are; I don’t have a lot of time for country music, but I love this. Would you call it kinda country blues? The first time i heard it would have been sixth year at school, so…1978? A friend brought it in to play on the common room record player. Anyway, top choice. It might be over 50 years old but it fits beautifully with the current music scene.
Genuinely struggling between 4 and 5 stars here - the songs that are good are really, really good, and Free Bird is always gonna be an amazing track, but there's definitely a bit of a slump in the middle... I think if the songs had a little more variety it would be five? It's very strong down-south good-rockin Blues rock, but the slower songs really drag... Sod it, it's a four but I'm not sure I won't be regretting that in a couple of days. Faves: Free Bird; Tuesday's Gone
Not a huge fan of southern rock but this album is incredible.
Full of belters
It's complicated. I kinda hate Simple man, but Tuesday's Gone and Free bird are goated. 4 for being the best of southern rock. Will I listen to again: 40%
Definitely liked it more than expected. And Free Bird is a banger.
Play Free Bird 🗣️🗣️
Classic southern rock, no bad songs on the album with 2-3 all time classics
What can be said about this album that hasn't been said. It has some all time great tracks that have more than stood the test of time.
A silly little album with a few silly little songs that any fan of classic rock will instantly recognise. Yet I can't help but feel that there isn't much variety, either in the lyricism or (especially) the style and instrumentation of each track. Tracks like Things Goin' On and Poison Whiskey, while technically fine, fade into the background when compared to the more well-known songs surrounding them. And is it fair to say that the "confederate rock" genre is both overdone and slightly in poor taste? I think it is. When the songs shine, though... man, they really shine. Tuesday's Gone and especially Free Bird are masterclasses in how to keep a 7-plus-minute song interesting through exciting solos, varying energy, and experimenting with combinations of instruments. Gimme Three Steps has a memorable vocal and guitar riff, as does Simple Man – justifying their clear popularity. I would've liked to see Lynyrd Skynyrd take these ideas and make more of a creative splash on the music scene through experimentation and artistic expression, but this album is pretty solid as is. 4/5 Key tracks: Free Bird, Simple Man, Gimme Three Steps
It’s fine but Southern Rock has never really appealed to me. Reminds me of too many rednecks that I grew up around. Their hit songs have been played to death and even though I like them well enough in the moment, I never search them out.
sería un 9.5
jajajaj gran nombre el apogeo del rock de guitarras.
Classic rock yankee setentoso
Damn fine
I thought this was gonna be totally overrated but this was actually great.
Pretty solid.
Just a bunch of dudes with some long hair shredding out guitar solos. What's more classic rock than this? One of the absolute heavy hitters of classic rock with one of the greatest rock anthems I've ever heard. Big credit for championing southern rock - lot of really cool and new innovative stuff going on in this album. Free Bird will always live on as the annoying song to request at a wedding or karaoke, who else can say that?
Every middle school dance ended with either Freebird or Stairway to Heaven. Respect! But really I don't like their music very much - it's very good for what it is, but I'm not a huge redneck rock head and if I had to, I'd rather listen to Charlie Daniels or Allmans or ZZ Top. I understand their name was borrowed from their high school gym teacher, which is pretty great. I also liked the way they responded to Neil Young's Southern Man and Alabama. And I realized this is the first time I've heard one of their albums - everything I know is from either classic rock radio or middle school dances. Funnily worded sentence in the Wikipedia article on this album: "As of March 2023, all the band members pictured are now deceased." As of? Like maybe if we periodically check in again we might find some are no longer deceased?
What an impressive debut album! I know there are other classics from their later albums, but this has a surprising number of hits that have withstood the test of time (regardless of their politics). My favorites on the album are also the ones I've heard many many times before: "Free bird", "Gimme three steps", "Simple man", and "Tuesday's gone" (ironic that the album producer nearly killed "Simple man" before it was even recorded). I don't think I've previously heard the remainder, but there are a few good ones in there too. The leading track "I ain't the one" was surprising how much it sounded like ZZ Top (as in, ZZ Top was clearly inspired by this song, not the other way around). Pro tip: although it's a better choice than some of the chain restaurants in the area, Skynyrd's in Kennesaw, Georgia, is a middling-at-best restaurant, even if the band *did* (maybe?) play there way back when....
4.1 2x classic
Älyttömän kova etelän rokkipläjäys! 4/5
Pleasantly surprised... nice mix of rock and country
did not realize the band that made sweet home alabama was this multifaceted and full of amazing compositions...8/10
Free bird baby 4 stars
Tuesday’s Gone // Simple Man // Free Bird // 3.5/5
I'd never really listened to a whole Lynyrd Skynyrd album before although I knew Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird (from this album) very well. Pretty good!
Good, but not my thing
Went it knowing the songs (and frankly some over played songs) and thought it would just be one listen. Found myself relistening a few times.
Loved this !!! Favs: I ain’t the one, Tuesday’s gone, Mississippi kid, free bird (did not know this was them lol)
I have always wanted to get into Lynyrd Skynyrd, and as soon as I saw those long-haired, flare-wearing men on the cover, I knew I was in for a treat. I knew a lot more songs on this album that I thought, mostly because of covers etc. Standout tracks: - Tuesday's gone <3 - Simple man (always makes me so sad) <3 - Poison Whiskey - Free bird (the solo is 5/5 I feel like I'm ascending to a new dimension)
Classic!!!
Banger after banger. There were like 4 singles on this album, and everything that wasn't should have been
suuuper classic
3.5
-liked this a LOT more than I thought I would knowing only Sweet Home Alabama tbh. Pretty much every song is super catchy and made me feel cool as shit -Some of the songs def went on a long time but they were still consistently good so I didn’t mind -Favorites are I Ain’t The One and Gimme Three Steps
I know these albums are on here for a reason. This one’s obvious. I know the band has some shady history, but good lord the Freebird solo…
Nice short and punchy, catchy rock, dosent overstay its welcome and starts and ends strong with a somewhat middling middle.
It was fun to actually listen to a whole Lynyrd Skynyrd album. Free Bird and Simple Man are great hits and I would listen again.
Terrific rock with southern sounds, original lyrics and ideas. Great classic album.
This album rocks!
A couple tracks honest surprised me with influences I hadn't expected. Obviously there are some monster tracks here, but there is a cool diversity that really showed off the depth of talent in the band.
I really like the guitars on this, it reminds me a bit of the ZZ Top album that came earlier. A couple of songs were a bit boring but mostly really good. Free Bird is epic
Like the overall feel of album and Free Bird is a no brainer classic, but found otherwise the lyrics of other tracks kind of basic
4.0
Great album has a few classics tracks never get tired of this
Great album! I ain’t the one is a new one for me - really enjoyed it! 8/10
Ok, I like how long the songs are
freebird is perfect, there are some similarities between other songs but i overall enjoyed it
No. 257/1001 I Ain't The One 3/5 Tuesday's Gone 4/5 Gimme Three Steps 3/5 Simple Man 5/5 Things Goin' On 3/5 Mississippi Kid 3/5 Poison Whiskey 3/5 Free Bird 5/5 Average: 3,63 Really good album with 2 exceptional songs.
The whole time I was like play freebird! And then they did!!
Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album is a timeless classic that perfectly captures the essence of Southern rock. From the opening riff of "Gimme Three Steps" to the epic ballad "Free Bird," this album is a showcase of the band's raw talent and infectious energy. Ronnie Van Zant's powerful vocals, Gary Rossington and Allen Collins's blistering guitar work, and Billy Powell's soulful piano playing combine to create a sound that is both gritty and melodic. While the album's production may be somewhat dated, it adds to its charm and authenticity. The songs are filled with heartfelt lyrics that paint vivid pictures of life in the South. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to Lynyrd Skynyrd, this album is a must-listen.

Classic country blues music. Can see why they took off from this. Highlights are Freebird
4/5 would so massacre people in a church to this
90% of this album did not land the way it did when I was a lad. However, Free Bird solo is worth 2 stars. It RIPS!
Some solid songs on the album, although I get so tired of hearing Free Bird.
Classic album, good solid southern rock
some goddamn mega hits on this. What a debut. Love it
Super fun album, I really like a lot of these songs. The first song I thought really sucked, but after that point it got going pretty strong. Hadn't heard those demo tracks before, but it was kind of cool to listen to them once.
I think I’ve underrated Lynyrd Skynyrd
Classic songs. Harmless good old boy before it was mean. I like that innocent vibe.
ez egy jo zene bazmeg
A top tier southern rock album.
The hits are good. The other songs are slightly less good. It’s a 4.
Some real classics here, along with some I've never heard that I quite enjoyed.
Yeah yeah yeah, "Free Bird" has been beaten to death - but for good reason. Putting myself in the shoes of someone in 1973 hearing "Tuesday's Gone", "Gimme Three Steps", "Simple Man" and "Free Bird" for the first time (and the subsequent mind-melting that would ensue), I have to respect the hell out of this record. A true titan of the southern rock genre.
STANDOUTS: Tuesday's Gone Gimme Three Steps Simple Man Free Bird OVERALL: 4/5; some absolute all-time bangers on here.
Honestly, such a srupendous album with rich and thick guitar tone from 3 loud and powerful guitars, motown boogie on drums, and a smooth southern heritage soaked drawl. Don't fixate on the politics of the south because the music of Lynard Skynard is not predicated on core beliefs but rather a sense of working man blues and dreggs caught up in the fast lane. I'll add though that this is basic southern rock, once you breach the genre wall there is so much phenomenal music beyond Skynard.
and be a simpllllleeeee kind of mannnnn
While I'm reminded a lot of Derek and the Dominoes and even a band like CCR while listening to this, I do certainly find its parts defiantly southern in nature. My impressions of Lynard Skynard weren't great going into this record but various elements won me over by the end. The longer cuts like 'Free Bird', and 'Tuesday's Gone', alongside the heartfelt and downright masterpiece 'Simple Man' were the staples in this album. The harder grooving songs that draw from the world of blues and swamp rock were quite sticky as well - my favorite had to be the piano-laced 'Things Goin' On'. For how popular this band is, they certainly didn't choose to abide by any widely appealing song structures to garner that beloved American popularity. I think that's largely due to the talent of the musicians here speaking for itself.
Excellent rock!!!
Did you know that at one point Lynyrd Skynyrd was led by someone who wasn't an outright loon? I'm not going to defend the use of the Confederate Flag here (for what it's worth, remember that Tom Petty used it too), but Ronnie Van Zant was, by all reports, a reasonable person. Sympathetic to progressive causes and capable of introspection and critical thought, especially directed toward The Idea of the South. "Sweet Home Alabama" might be the South's equivalent of "Born in the U.S.A." which is to say that a song that has been erroneously embraced as a patriotic anthem but is anything but. Well, maybe it is a little. The band undoubtedly went bananas after his death, but Ronnie? Ronnie seemed to be an ok guy. A worthy debut record with classic songs left and right, including the final track which whips ass. Back when I was in middle school starting to get into music, it was still common to randomly shout "Free Bird!" in crowds. I haven't heard anyone do that since and thank goodness for that. It's clear that the boys in Lynyrd Skynyrd were operating in a post-psychedelic, post-hippie world, where sprawling jams were becoming increasingly regular but idealism was slowly fading. These songs, notably "Tuesday's Gone" and "Simple Man" are genuinely despairing. The upbeat numbers rollick and tumble along so effortlessly despite so much going on. On paper, you'd think that three guitarists would spell 'too many cooks' but producer and Bob Dylan-sideman Al Kooper manages to map it out without any clutter. Gotta love an album cover that's basically "dudes being dudes." A-
As brilliant and radio-battered as Free Bird is, there are other really good tunes on here.
Tuesday's Gone...underrated song, it's totally overshadowed by Free Bird. From the wistful melancholy of Tuesday's Gone to the goofy fun of Gimme Three Steps. Legendary Busch theme song, Simple Man. Gimme Three Steps feels really out of place. I'm wondering if they just reprinted this album with a different cover and called it their greatest hits. 4 of their biggest songs on their debut? That's a solid first album. Other than Sweet Home Alabama, I'd say the four songs on this album are pretty much everything you absolutely need to know about Lynyrd Skynyrd. Things Goin' On continues the kind of happy-sad back and forth between songs. This album feels like a collection of singles, it's not super coherent. And now, Free Bird...great song but it really sucks the air out of the second half of the album. I am shocked that Simple Man is the second most listened to track on the album by a mile and that Tuesday's Gone is fourth. The instrumental at the end of Free Bird vs. the instrumental at the end of Layla, tough choice.
Went pretty hard overall. Loved the guitar playing on it. The album sounded really clear and that only enhanced how great the instrumentation was. Vocals were also great and engaging to listen to. A couple songs that didn’t quite hold my attention but overall, a great album.
Classic Southern American Rock, almost every one of these songs are standard in their own right. Outstanding for a first outing by a band.
Simple Man and Firebird are the two tracks that stuck with me. Everything else was pleasant enough. I see why this era of the band is generally regarded as their best work.
They went long on a lot of their songs, didn’t they? Even the classics aren’t unassailable- they could probably all be cut down by 25% and be fine. Having said that, exemplary rockers who defined their subgenre entirely.
Woah there's more songs album than just Simple Man and Free Bird? Just kidding I've also heard Gimme Three Steps. Thisll be my first listen to throughout. Tuesdays Gone is one of those songs where I've definitely heard but didn't know who sang it upon until listening to this record. Good southern rock songs inbetween the hits that made the band what it is. Free Bird is the perfect last song. The way it fades out implies they keep rocking to this day. Good album
Such a good country rock blues record. So many classics and they deserve to be classics. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
What a great album. Or... how about those 3 incredible songs? Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man and obviously, Free Bird. This was my first introduction to Southern Rock and it always just made sense. Bluesy guitars, sorrowful and soulful vocals + lyrics. It rocks, but it also feels sentimental. I hope I'm not taking away from Skynyrd by saying that their music has always felt like perfect background music for anywhere in America. It appears in movies all the time, it's kind of exactly what you would expect to hear when you walk into a diner or coming out of a truck stop. It's almost always the right moment for Lynyrd Skynyrd anywhere in America. Simple Man always takes me back to that tragic scene in Almost Famous when Penny Lane is having an OD and Simple Man is playing in the background. Tuesday's Gone always reminds me of the final scene of Happy Gilmore. Tuesday's Gone is maybe one of the underrated songs of the 70s. Why don't we listen to that one more? Hell, why isn't that just the National Anthem? Can you imagine at the start of every football game someone just comes out and wails on Tuesday's Gone?? And Free Bird. What else do I need say? And this bird you cannot cage. (tears, chills, feelings.)
sonically, for me, this album is amazing. it embodies southern rock, with van zant’s incredible, growling vocals, and rhythms that instantly make you want get to up and dance, such as “gimme three steps”. when considering this album, it is impossible to ignore the iconic guitar riffs and solos it contains. every song has well-crafted licks that are the making of the album, most obviously in “free bird”, which presents over 4 minutes of solo. for me, i preferred the first half of the album, which felt better structured. both “things going on” and “mississippi man” felt a bit slow personally, and didn’t flow as well. many reviewers, when writing about this album, are reflective of the band’s personal views. whilst i do not endorse any racist behaviour the band may have displayed, it is important to place them into the context of 70s southern america, and understand the social norms at the time. instead of just condemning this, we can understand and learn from it.
Great
Ok boomer! (Complimentary)
This is USA. This is a band that truly represents the sounds of American rock and roll. A number of classics on this, including the ever-ubiquitous, and sometimes criticized, “Free Bird.” This record is short, sweet and charming. Really dig this one.
Classic Skynyrd. So much talent. 4stars
Better all around than I anticipated. Not just the radio hits. It was all pretty good.
Gostei
It's 2024 and a band is still touring calling themselves Skynyrd. ??? Tuesdays Gone slide guitar is some of the best ever.
Lynyrd Skynrd is the band your redneck uncle loves. He probably has a confederate flag hanging in his garage. Other than the uncomfortable associations, this album was a solid listen. Blues meets country with some rockin guitars. Felt a little power ballad heavy, but it earned its spot on the list without question.
Shut up and play the hits
Day 40 - July 11th, 2024 Is the album fire? Yes. Are they racist pieces of shit? Also yes. Free Bird makes me want to outrun a cop. 4/5.
Closer to 4.5 stars than you might think. If a few of the non-hits were on the same level as the hits, it would be there. At least. Skynyrd has developed a strange reputation thanks to the atrocity that is the reunion-era band, the played-out "Free Bird" jokes, and "Sweet Home Alabama" attaining a level of radio overplay that should be illegal. But don't sleep on the original lineup's albums. It's not just good southern rock; it's damn good rock and roll period. 4/5
Such a cool sound, and so many hits that the arrangement of the album almost wouldn’t matter. Just a classic. love the blend of southern country with pure american rock and roll.
freeeeee biiiiiirrrddd
Album that contains gargantuan classics such as Free Bird and Simple Man, but also has a lot of songs I did not care to listen twice.
This has some other worldly, devastatingly hard bangers, but some meh songs. Feels like 4 is a good fit
One thing that keeps coming up for me is the number of albums that seem like obvious inspirations for the grunge bands of the '90s. No wonder the Boomers weren't totally convinced - they'd heard it all before. I dig Skynyrd's blues infused rock, and there's so much more to the album than just Free Bird.
Surprisingly good.
This was quite a good album and is the source of a lot of their classics.
Hah. Pronounced. I could play most of this one before I could drive. Not my favorite Skynyrd album but it deserves its props.
This album does have some certified bangers. It's really hard to seperate the art from the artist here though. I think it's a little hypocritical of me to seperate for John Lennon and Marilyn Manson but not for these dudes. This record is really good musically.
Starts w four Big Hits, close w freebird, built a new genre in southern rock. Borderline five.
Surely one of the great albums from Lynyrd Skynyrd, yes? It's got a few of the huge hits, "Tuesday's Gone," "Simple Man," and "Free Bird" especially. Short of "Sweet Home Alabama," I don't think I know any other Lynyrd Skynyrd than what we heard here. The album truly rocks, and holy cow, it's their debut?? This band debuted with "Free Bird"???? Good lord. Yeah, this is a classic. Favorite tracks: Free Bird, Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Things Goin' On. Album art: Band photo, but it's not bad, being outdoors and with a lightning bolt in the background (real or not) is a really nice touch. I also love the "title," which is just a pronunciation guide for the band's name. For some reason that made me think this was a few albums into their catalog, like they were getting buzz and wanted to set the record straight. But no, they had the foresight to put that on their debut! Another point to LS. 4.5/5
This rocks!
A great classic. It would be very hard to top such a great album with so many great jams.
Never loved these guys. Prefer Allman Brothers. Anyway this is a classic. Would have give a three if the song that smell was on this. I hate that song. Automatic 4 for free bird.
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. Gimme three steps and free bird were my favorites.
Some proper rocking. Vocals are great, guitars are great, even pianos are great.
Pronounced Owe-Sum Though not 5 stars... but a solid 4.8 stars!!!
Awwe this one has Tuesday's Gone on it. I will forever be reminded of Dazed and Confused when I hear this. Gimme Three Steps is on here too. I'll have to finish this tomorrow. Simple Man is on here too.
Unfortunately this album completely rips ass.
The four classic songs on this hold up really well. The deep cuts aren't all that special. It's a true feat that 4 of the songs are all from a first album, but this doesn't get all the way to 5 stars for me.
Finally a good album
This holds up really well.
I just read this on the band’s Wikipedia page: [Begin Quote] In return for avoiding prison following his guilty plea to DUI manslaughter, Collins would be wheeled out onstage each night to explain to the audience why he could no longer perform [End Quote] So to avoid going to prison for manslaughter for killing his girlfriend in a drunk driving accident, his paralyzed-from-the-neck-down ass had to be wheeled out on stage and tell 20,000 drunk rednecks not to drink and drive while they shouted “woo!” and “Free Bird!” and their sister/girlfriends sitting on their shoulders flashed their tits?! Goddam I love the South! Look, I don’t know about whether this band was racist or whether Neil Young put down his maple syrup-infused cocaine long enough to decide if he wanted to be friends with them or not. I only know when something rocks, and this album rocks. I had the majority of these songs played at me on repeat by Rock 101 WROQ - where it’s always a Southern county fairgrounds in 1978, forever! - for most of my teenage years, and I can still appreciate that this music is solid and fun and brings together a bunch of influences in a compelling and fresh way. I’m sure that Skynyrd were deeply flawed in any number of different ways - just like every other rock band - but in the early to mid-70’s, they had it. This album is all the proof you could ever need of that.
Had only ever heard free bird, but I guess I like southern rock because most of this was fantastic and really fun to listen to.
I love Lynyrd Skynyrd. They hit almost every box for me. This was great to listen to!
Great Southern Rovk
yeah free birds
I'm a free as a chad bird
Solid!
It would be an easy 5 stars if not for all the songs not named "Free Bird". Amazing track, phenomenal guitar solos, top 20 all time songs in some random rankings, for sure. But overall Lynyrd Skynyrd and this album is quite average. Good Southern rock/blues sound, pretty good vocal, and two extraordinary songs. The whole note for this album goes to Free Bird.
I am truly torn about this one. This album has some objectively amazing songs that are true Classics, including some of my favorite songs growing up. However, the racist overtones associated with this band potentially overshadow their art. I scored this for based solely on the music, divorcing that from the larger context, though it gives me more than a little discomfort to do so.
All in all it's probably a 3/5 but I like Free Bird quite a lot so it gets bumped up. 4/5
Really liked the album, but I think the second half is not so powerful as the first except for Free Bird
All their best hits on one album, with some really good southern rock tracks in between. Maybe stating the obvious, but in particular, some really great guitar work. Putting the meme aside, the solo in Free Bird is objectively an all time great guitar solo. And Simple Man is a fantastic track. The rest is solid, but not on the same level as those two songs. Overall, a really good album all the way through, but also not quite at the level to warrant a 5 rating in my book.
American classic rock at it's best. Although not really the type of rock I would listen to there is no doubting that greatness of songs like Freebird, Tuesdays Gone and Simple Man 4/5
Great album.
real and true classic
Really really banging
Yes, Free Bird but better is Simple Man plain and simple.
Great album which includes one of the classic rock songs of all time, Free Bird. Plenty of other great songs, too.
Classic album. Nice first offering.
Two great songs, two good songs, rest are meh.
Strong 4
Knew a bunch of these already and really enjoyed the album
Great album. Love the big hitters here but I was not as in love with the ones I hadn’t heard before. The big three (Tuesday’s Gone, Simple Man, and Free Bird) just clear the rest of them by a mile. The length of the album is perfect. Doesn’t overstay its welcome, covers a good variety of subjects such as love, uncertainty, youth, and change. Standouts: Tuesday’s Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Poison Whiskey, and Free Bird.
I never knew how many songs I have loved came off this album. There are so many radio hits: Simple Man; Tuesday’s Gone; Freebird; Poison Whiskey. Classic rock radio might as well put press the entire album. Skynyard always seemed too rocks-billy for me overall. I have had a respect but not necessarily an interest. Now listening to an entire album, I want more and am a bit ashamed of my own close mindedness. I am going to remedy that immediately!
This one is pretty great. Got a little too country for me before bringing down the house with (lifts up lighter in the air) FREE BIRD!!!!! I Ain't the One is a hidden gem and one I hadn't heard before. I also enjoyed Poison Whiskey too. I'll rock out to this one again.
Very good, but some filler tracks
Listened April 26/27 Fun, some powerful songs
Yeah, pretty cool, bro. 3.5
Classic. Some great tunes here.
the mega hits of this album are undeniable classics so tempted to give this a 5, but the remaining songs are pretty forgettable, and that's mostly because I'm waiting to hear the mega hits
Fantastic record! It's incredible how an album of such quality could be their debut. Standouts were the recognizable radio staples, Tuesday’s Gone, Gimme Three Steps and of course Free Bird, but I also connected well with Mississippi Kid, a bluegrass hillbilly tune with a killer harmonica part, which I don't recall taking notice of before. It's well deserving of its success and of many repeat listens.
I had a battered copy of One More From The Road which I played to death decades before I heard their studio albums. And it is to that album that I would direct anyone to hear definitive versions of four tracks on this album, not least Freebird. The other tracks are fine back-up but as Motorhead (No Sleep..) and Lizzy (Live and Dangerous), UFO (Strangers...) the live album contains the versions that leap out of the speakers.
Amazing
Free Bird 🗣️
4.5
I could go for a Second Helping
Tuesdays gone us going to be the new track of my life. I love this project and I’m shocked by that
All good stuff Simpsons: Yes
Really loved this, easily to listen to. I know I usually complain about long songs and how there is no need for them, however I'm willing to let that slide as all of their long songs have appeared on a guitar hero game and it bring back so many memories of visiting my cousins. Also I discovered another bad through a cover of simple man
Classic Lynyrd Skynyrd. Can’t complain every song was bloody great but not quite there for me. I can’t hear Freebird without thinking about that scene in Kingsman
Kein Einheitsbrei. Schönes Album, das mit Blues im Sothern Rock Stil aufwartet.
yaaaaahhh free birddddd :D
Damn I expected these guys to be overhyped, I was wrong. I expected the guitar, but the piano player here was also top notch. Great classic rock. Favorite track was poison whiskey
Great classic album with tons of hits
The soundtrack of my teenage years.
Free Bird doubles as a secondary national anthem for a reason 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅
I'm not generally a huge fan of southern rock but this album surprised me. A few hits I already knew, some great album tracks, great guitar and surprisingly strong vocals throughout.
Not what I expected!
It's generally good. I do not like "Give Me Three Steps" or whatever. Never did. For being a long song Freebird actually doesn't overstay it's welcome and has a great into and and equally great "rockin' out" part. I guess it's a 3.5 rounded to 4.
Sumamente recomendable.
Banger
8.5/10
This is a good album, albeit a little too country for my taste.
Very surprised that a) I really enjoyed this and b) Freebird was probably my least favourite track.
Great album! One I’ve owned for a while and packed with bluesy classics. Come for Freebird, stay for Tuesday’s Gone and Mississippi Kid! It’s not a 5 but it’s a very very easy 4.
I enjoyed the album overall.
