7/10 Overall good playing, but nothing ground breaking for me. However, Free Bird singlehandedly elevated rating one level higher XD

Lynyrd Skynrd Chugging along hillbilly rock n roll. Hard to resist but also, what the all the confederate flag racism bollocks, hard to truly love. The languid style hides the note perfect precision - a bit of an alabama Dire Straits. Still, I enjoyed it as a kid and I enjoyed again on my revisit. Best Track - always has to be Freebird Worst Track - Gimme Three Steps 7.5/10

Oh yeah I love Lynyrd Skynyrd (pronouncing it totally wrong) They played the Happy Gilmore song……. And Free Bird……….

Its fine

3 top songs and the rest is pretty fun. 3.7 out of 5.

All of Skynyrd 's best songs are here. ALL OF THEM

6.3.26 General Thoughts: Really great rock album. Vibes are driving with windows down hair in the wind but the truck is a little muddy. Feeling closer to my southern roots baby. Favorite Song: I Ain't The One Rating: 4.5/5

Really enjoyed this

Hey y’all, this was alright you know.

For most of the album there is a tug of war between the Deep South twang and good old rock n roll and thankfully it is the latter that shines through. Then you get to Free Bird and the album is instantly elevated.

As an album it’s kinda hard to fathom how the general averageness of the opening 7 songs equate to the absolute majesty of track 8. 2+2=20 or something like that.

Pro-Confederate imagery (which is bad) aside, Lynyrd Skynyrd rocks. Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Gimme Three Steps, and Free Bird on the same album?!?! Nasty work.

Free bird is great Most songs were too long tbh

So many southern rock classics on this album.

Great album, very pleasantly surprised. Knew the hits already, but enjoyed it from start to finish.

An American classic. Simple man and freebird are amazing songs.

Mostly enjoyed this, but got a little tired of the sound for a bit in the middle. No stand out faves I didn’t already know.

The definition of a really solid album. There were a couple of songs I didn't really care for like Mississippi Kid or Poison Whiskey but the rest of the album is really good. I've always just been so-so on Tuesday's Gone, but Gimme Three Steps is fun, Simple Man rips, and Free Bird is Free Bird. I've reached a point in my life were I appreciate the first half of Free Bird more than the 2nd. Mid 4.

Classic

My rating 3.8. Great debut album with classic bluesy rock songs. Even Freebird. 😉

quintessential southern rock album🐍

First album of the band and an absolute legendary one at that. Honorable mention freebird is from here

This album is the platonic ideal of southern USA living

This one comes with baggage. Southern rock means something specific, often connected to confederate flags etc. I like this album if I strip it of its cultural presence. I think it was made by young guys with no other aspirations other than to rock. And it does. I am going on record to say I love Free Bird. My only complaint is that it’s too short. This record isn’t perfect but it’s better than average.

Album n.4 The opening track wasnt to my taste. I could hear some blues influences and acording to wikipedia the album is southern rock which is pretty cool. Genre mixing is always interesting to hear. I liked tuesdays gone the best, for me it was the most emotional song. Gimme three steps was fun. Simple man was boring. I liked the blues/country sounding guitar on Things going on. Missisipi kid was kind of anoying with the higher pitched guitar. Poison whiskey wasnt memorable. Free bird wasnt my favorite but I understand why it was the most popular. Without the country/blues influences this would be quite a boring album. I rate it 3.7

"Simple man" is one of those songs that are undeniably great in my opinion but also, pun-intended, simple. On the other hand, it doesn't fit on this album. The other undeniably great song is "Free Bird" which fits like a glove. I like the album overall, but a lot of the songs do not come close to the hits so it feels really unbalanced. Also all the Confederate flag stuff.

I mean, Freebird right? It's become a meme, but you can't deny its power. I was ready to hate on this album, but then I remembered that I actually like a lot of these songs! Tuesday's Gone is simply sublime. Three Steps is a hectic boogie. Simple Man, I mean come on. Sure there are some throwaway bluesy numbers to pad it out, bit this album is super solid. 4.5/5

This was a great album, but one I don't have very much to say about. The appeal of it is fairly simple: it's just a rock-solid collection of bluesy hard rock. The band achieves a nice mix of ballads and bangers, and the tracklist is structured to ensure that the album doesn't get stuck in one mode for too long. The lyrics aren't mindblowing, but there's some solid storytelling and some excellent hooks. Of course, the crown jewel of the album is Free Bird, a 9 minute Southern rock epic with some outstanding guitar work. It's an all-time great closing track, and the fact that they save it for the end is proof of this album's incredibly tight sequencing. Part of me wishes that the production had a bit more grit to it, but that's a very minor complaint for what's otherwise a very catchy and fun rock album.

I tend to prefer Molly Hatchet, Allman Bros, or Marshall Tucker Band, if I’m going Southern Rock, but god damn does this album have some bangers on it.

Verbal Meme: Vince McMahon escalating reactions 1. "Gimme Three Steps" 2. "Simple Man" 3. "Tuesday's Gone" 4. "Free Bird" The rest is decent southern rock, really seems like filler amongst those jams, but still listenable. This would probably be a 4.5

Some good ol' southern rock

Some absolute all-time classics on this album, but the rest is just sort of pretty good. I could justify a 5 star rating for this but we'll go with 4. Favourite tracks: Free Bird, Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man

Soaring, genuinely moving moments powered by supreme and intricate guitar arrangements and Van Zant's soulful vocals. Some moments of fun and play (incredible Free Bird jam session culminating solo). One or two tracks more pedestrian, almost Status Quo like. Favourite tracks: Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Free Bird (the singles I'd heard before). Overall: enjoyable, bluesey, epic rock n roll.

Free Bird Simple Man

I actually think this is quite good. Not generally a fan of "southern" rock but this is definitely the best example and they're excellent musicians. I grew up in Central Maine in the 80s so you kinda HAD to listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd...and Freebird was even my class's graduation song (although I personally voted for Don't You Forget About Me by the Simple Minds). I do have a soft spot for it.

u forget how good they were ! .......70s rocked and i was a teenager all through that decade :)

Banger album me een vn de beste hype rock songs aller tijden

Precies wat je verwacht, wel echt goede classics

RATING:4/5the country rock of all time honestly FAV SONG:Freeeee Birddd YEahhhh! DURATION: 1hr 16m, 13 songs DATE:18/05/2026

So many classics for a debut album! Color me impressed.

To me this band sort of defines Southern Rock, with the heavy country-tinged riffs and country style vocals. Great tunes in this one, absolute bar songs. And of course, Free Bird. This is classic rock.

Any album that gave the world Free Bird deserves at least 4 stars. The rest of the album was lesser known to me. I knew Simple Man from a live cd, or a best of, not really sure. Most of the rest of the tracks felt underwhelming.

Lynyrd Skynyrd must have been like a falling star back when this was released because there are some good songs on here. Free Bird is probably one of the greatest songs of all time and if any of the other songs on here were even close to its level I'd be willing to give it a five stars but I just can't. The songs are good and free bird alone is enough for four stars but I would've just like a lot more of that free bird energy throughout some pretty slow songs. Fav Song: Free Bird (+++) Least Fave: Gimme Three Steps

I guess I was too punk growing up to like bands like Skynard, but this album rocks.

A great debute album, but i found myself a little bit just waiting for free bird but otherwise really good

Simple man and free bird 10/10. Rest good/okay rock

I Ain't The One was cool. It was kinda catchy. Good intro 7/10 Tuesday's Gone is a vibe. Very catchy, good lyrics and a classic. Definetly a favorite 9/10 Gimme Three Steps is kinda cool. I like the lyrics, and the chorus is fun too. 7/10 Simple Man is really cool. I like the guitar very much. Also another favorite 9.5/10 Things Goin' On is a cool protest song. But it didn't stand out too much for me. 5.5/10 Mississippi Kid is also cool. The thing that stood out to me was the mandolin. But just that. 6/10 Poison Kid is very cool. I liked the piano in this one. But the lyrics are..ok I guess 6.5/10 Free Bird is iconic. No notes. Just rock. 10/10 Overall, this album is an essential staple in rock music. And I have definetly found some new songs to listen to over and over again 4/5 (It would be 4.5/5 if I could)

I thought it was ‘Li-Nérd’? Such a great album, just excellent music. FREE BIIIIRD YEAH!

Good for the genre; not my favorite group, but good when in the mood.

Turns out there's more to them then I recall, some good stuff.

Nice album, almost everything is recognizable. I had never listened to an album by Lynyrd Skynyrd before.

Look, I might not be a fan of the American South in general, but I can't deny that they've got some good music down there. Case in point, Lynyrd Skynyrd! These guys are, like, THE definitive Southern Rock band, and this debut album of theirs is quite good. It's only got 8 songs, but roughly half of them are all-time classics. The other half? They're good, but those hits are just great. "Gimme Three Steps" is solid, but it's probably my least favorite of the heavy-hitters. "Tuesday's Gone" and "Simple Man" are both quite lovely, the latter especially. I really love the slower paces of those two songs. But of course, these guys can really rock if they want. This is made obvious by what is easily the most iconic song on this whole album, the epic 9-minute closer "Free Bird." What can I say? It's fuckin' "Free Bird." That solo is the stuff dreams are made of. It's awesome. As far as general elements of the album go, Ronnie Van Zant's got a solid voice. The music is pretty good all through out. The writing is alright. Fortunately, I wouldn't say that any parts of this album have aged particularly poorly. This is just some cool rock music, okay? I like this. Decent 4/5.

Unbelievable debut album. Tons of hits, and it doesn't seem real that they had Free Bird on their first album.

It's been a long time since I've listened to this album and it was a really nice revisit.

This is legit good music, kind of a shame classic rock radio has overplayed the shit out of it for 40 years. I didn't realize all these songs were on one album. The non-hits I really enjoyed as well. Southern culture ftw 4.5

Great album but not always my bag

Fuck yeah

Lots of the reviews here go on about politics/racism of the band but it's just not a band I know a lot about, and none of that information was forthcoming on their wiki entries, so it's not going to influence my view here. There's some major classics on this album, and all of it is pretty enjoyable. There's some funky riffs, though some of them are also a bit too repetitive. Great bass lines, and a nice mixture of instrumentation across the course of the albums, including some great piano work which automatically scores it some points in my book. The guitar solos can be a little bit self-indulgent, but they're also pretty good and enjoyable to listen to. The ramping solo in Free Bird will always be iconic. Enjoyable dad rock. Solid 4.

Not the biggest Skynyrd fan, but this album is very good.

Very nostalgic for me

This was a really good album, with some iconic songs, but it didn’t click for me like CCR albums due when it comes to southern rock/country rock.

This band is technically beyond compare but they are not showy about it. Freebies, Simple Man and Tuesday's Gone on one album gets it on this list and the other tracks keep it here.

Amazing

Quite the debut album

Southern rock at its very best

Loved this album. Free Bird!!!!!! Didn't know it was from these guys! Move of a 5 than a 4 however, there was only two other songs I really vibed with.

This is pretty great. Opens with a belter in I Ain't The One, followed by the gorgeous Tuesdays Gone. Gimme Three Steps is a good old toe-tapper and Simple Man is a classic. The next few tracks aren't as strong, but I enjoyed the quirkiness of Things Going On. The album ends with the epic Free Bird, which speaks for itself as an all-timer of a track. It's incredible that this is a debut album. So impressive.

It was a good, solid listen. I liked it for what it was and when it was made. This is not something I will add to my rotation of frequent visits, but there were for sure a few standout songs that I will be enjoying independently from the full album.

Good Florida rock. Quite varied. Cool blues tune on here.

Enjoyed it a lot more than I expected I would, solid 4/5 with some slower bits towards the big finish.

This is a rock solid album even before “Free Bird.” Grade A country rock. The arrangements and the mix are fantastic. And of course “Free Bird” is a classic! That moment halfway through when the song kicks into overdrive? Amazing. Even after hearing this song 1000 times before, there’s magic in that moment. Very enjoyable album all around. 4.5

Dig the tracks that everyone knows so much... 4/5

This is #day619 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… "mama told me when I was young," right? "Simple Man" is a timeless song, no question. What adds a personal touch for me is that it was covered by Deftones, my second all-time favorite band, and, as is often the case with them, the cover is absolutely excellent. Otherwise, this is a solid and enjoyable hard/blues rock record from the mid-'70s. I played it on my Technics SU-7300, and it was exactly what the doctor ordered. I'm giving it a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day620.

Damn that's fine. Even if the guitar solo on "Free Bird" is wildly overrated.

top tier rock

swamp rock at it's finest, so, four stars

If you have to sit through a Lynyrd Skynyrd album, this is it. I’d rather give this a 3 but this is their DEBUT ALBUM. America used to be a country 🫡

Great debut album. I'm way over Free Bird, but it's still an anthem

Surprisingly better than expected

I would hazard to say that a lot of the songs on this album are swamp rock standards now, but the blatant racism of a lot of the band really hurts the credibility of this album.

Track 1: I Ain't The One; 7.8/10; cool transition, intricate guitar solos Track 2: Tuesday's Gone; 6.8/10; slow track?? catchy chorus, song too long Track 3: Gimme Three Steps; 7.2/10; generic 70's rock sound Track 4: Simple Man; 8.2/10; catchy, not as generic as last Track 5: Things Goin' On; 7.8/10; ragtime vibe? Track 6: Mississippi Kid: 7/10; more country Track 7: Poison Whiskey: 6.5/10; country-rock Track 8: Free Bird; 7.1/10; too long and generic sounding.

I aint the one and mississipi kid are really good. Has a bunch of their hits too. Much better than I remembered. I should listen to more LS

Their best record before they became a staple of classic rock radio. Dangerous and dirty Southern Rock that feels like you might get knifed in a back alley. Poison Whiskey is a lost classic

I didn’t hate this as much as I thought I would. “Tuesday’s Gone” is a great song and “Simple Man” is really good. Instead of the advice to be a simple man, mama should’ve taught them not to be racist men

Free Bird, Simple Man, Tuesday's Gone. An album full of classics and one of the all-time debut records.

It gets harder and harder to still like this band as the years go by, but you've got to be able to admit when an asshole still makes good art. This album absolutely deserves its slot in history and it still cooks over 40 years later. Does it all age well? Hell no. Even in 1973 people knew these guys were playing a weird culture war game with some of their tracks. But shit. Tuesday's Gone? Three Steps? Free Bird? You can't throw that baby out with the confederate bathwater. It's just too bad Steve Gaines wasn't around for this album.

I really hope theyre not racist, the music is so good

Liked it a lot more than I was expecting to. I also cannot believe it took me this long to realize where the fuck Free Bird came from. Whatever. How was I supposed to know a Lynyrd Skynyrd song was the source of that joke?

Decided 3/5 was fair. I knew and liked most of the songs. Then I fucking rocked out in my car to Freebird. Now 4/5.

Always kind of disliked these guys for their diss track on Neil Young, but have never given them a proper chance. The truth is I like southern rock and this is a great band.

I have always loved Tuesday's Gone and Free Bird but had never heard the rest of the album. Some very cool rockers and some lovely ballads I was unfamiliar with. Definitely a chill vibe of an album. Very listenable, no wonder it's considered such a classic.

This is Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album, which is crazy. Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, and........Free Bird on this album. Ok so i've heard all these songs before, but if you asked me what song they did before today.....no clue. I just completely disassociate bands with songs in my mind. There are bands that I "know" of, there are songs that I have heard.....and they basically don't connect in my mind. Not sure why that is. The album was good and has some of their greatest hits on the record.....but I thought they were heavier. You're telling me Things Goin' On and Mississippi Kid are rock songs? The album feels closer to country rock or folk rock, but I guess it doesn't matter. Free Bird is a 9 minute song. Listen, i'm just going to say it. The solo is epic, and it is also entirely too long. That is probably blasphemous, but I think there is a point where a solo falls off and it's about the point where it becomes the same duration as a regular track. There's my controversial opinion. Great album, ton of hits, but the songs that aren't hits are very skippable.

Really interesting songs. Very long which is a plus. Creates a nice fun atmosphere

surprisingly enjoyable, easy listening, guitar riffs, free bird, three steps

Muy bueno really good guitar portables country rock 7.5

Hadn't heard someof the other songs than free bird, it's definitely a complete album with very few skips.

По душе! Для дальней поездке вообще класс

Crank that mfin’ lynyrdddd skynyrdddd

gnarly dude

Two of the best songs of all time and then the other five

Cooles Album 😎

Imma freeebirdin da dau da dun dun dun

Not as jingoistic as I was expecting. A fun album.

Ok Lynyrd Skynyrd

Free bird - that is all

I Ain't The One - 4/5 Tuesday's Gone - 3.5/5 Gimme Three Steps - 5/5 Simple Man - 4/5 Things Goin' On - 4.5/5 Mississippi Kid - 3.5/5 Poison Whiskey - 4.5/5 Free Bird - 3.5/5 Mr. Banker - 3.5/5 Down South Jukin' - 3.5/5 Tuesday's Gone - Demo Version - 3/5 Gimme Three Steps - Demo Version - 3/5 Free Bird - 1973/Live Demo Version - 3/5

Great Southern Rock

Album #56, Lynyrd Skynyrd, (Pronounced ’Lĕh-’nérd ’Skin-’nérd) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I have a special place in my heart for “Simple Man”. This is going to sound like a brag, but it’s just a story from my teenage years, and it’s one of those things that feels like it should only happen in a movie, but it actually did happen. I was a drummer in a punk band at a show, and just before we went on, the drummer for the band that was supposed to play before us dropped out. They were a covers band doing rock songs. “Simple Man” It’s one of the only songs I really remember us doing. I ended up getting the gig with that band off the back of it. It didn’t amount to anything in the long run, but it was fun time in my life and that song always reminds me of it. I think Skynrd our a great band. They’re surprisingly not as heavy as you might expect. I’d always thought of Lynyrd Skynyrd as quite a hard-hitting rock band, but this leans more towards ballads and country. The strength of the big four songs alone, “Tuesday’s Gone”, “Gimme Three Steps”, “Simple Man”, and “Free Bird”, is massive. These are songs that have been played to death and still stand the test of time. Ronnie Van Zant is a great singer for this style, really soulful, and the more country-leaning tracks like “Mississippi Kid” feel very authentic. Every song brings a slightly different element to their sound, which keeps things interesting. It’s not my favourite album in the world, but I’d still give it four stars because it deserves it. I like Lynyrd Skynyrd, and I like the bands they influenced as well. I’m a big fan of Drive-By Truckers, and there’s no way they exist without Lynyrd Skynyrd.

3 stars plus 1 for freebird

This was alright

Very bluesy, with 2 of the best singles In their career

Southern rock at its finest , some great solos and just plain beautiful songs

Really enjoyable record, solid songwriting and playing throughout and come on free bird one of best solos of all time!

A bit dated but not bad. Extra star because of Tuesday’s gone and Freebird

Not necessarily my kind of thing, but you can’t deny it’s pretty good. Favourite track: Free Bird

Awesome, definitely going to come back to this. Can't listen to free bird without saying hell yea 4

A couple of bangers on this one. Funkier than it gets credit for from anti-Southern rock folks.

Nothing goes better with freebird than my keys and a bottle of jack

Title feels like bad marketing, but can see why the album is included in this list. Rounding up from a 3.5

This record kicks ass. Incredible debut release.

Shame the rest of the album wasn't as ambitious structure-wise and sonicly as Free Bird. But still good.

Great album. Still a couple of songs worth skipping.

Free bird is undeniably a 5 with a great overall song as well as possibly the best guitar solo of all time. However, while the rest of the album is still full of great country rock music, I feel like it doesn’t flow amazingly and gets a bit repetitive.

The quality of the best songs buoys this way up, but even the weaker tracks are “write what you know”, and fall nicely into place. The band has chops too.

some classics in here like free bird.

Easy to see why Lynyrd Skynyrd made it big. They have style right out the gate. Most of the songs kick ass, though I'll fully admit that I'm tired of hearing Simple Man and Free Bird. That said, Mississippi Kid is fucking awful. What was going on there, seriously?

Actually had a hard time deciding on this one. The great songs are epic, the others are meh. I just can't give an album with Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, and Free Bird less than 4 stars.

Great music created by apparently terrible people. I am not aware of the controversy, but I think art from bad people can still be good. 8/10 Most Excellent

4 "Hee-Yucks" out of 5. Jaunty country fun for simple men everywhere with pistols in their pockets (says it all).

FREEEE BIRRDDDDDDDD

Done - Simple Man, Free Bird, Tuesday's gone, I ain't the one, Gimme Three Steps, Things Goin On, Missipi Kid, Poison Whiskey Rating is 3.5/5

Real southern rock

Solid album. Feels like Free Bird was written by the some other band also called Lynyrd Skynyrd.

What an energetic album. Skillful but raw at the same time, a great debut record showcasing both instrumental prowess and youthfull energy of the 20-25 years old members. With very southern, American, and selfish notion of freedom at the very centre of the album, it is a child of its times, most probably inconceivable today. Instrumentally it's a masterpiece, with the much worn out via social media "Freebird" being an obvious stand out in that regard. That riff is absolutely sick, plain and simple. Fantastic album throughout, I listen to it a lot since it first popped out on this list.

This is a classic album from my childhood. 4 of the 8 songs are still being played on the classic rock stations still. Lots of memories from this album

IT WAS GOOD

Knew more songs than I realized, fave song Tuesday's Gone. 7.5

mevasa

8.5/10

Very enjoyable

Good old rock. 8/10

Quintessential dad rock of the best kind.

first listen rocks

On the road again...

Better than Coldplay

ta cool, pero lo hubiera disfrutado más si estuviera de vieja, NO YENDO A TRABAJAR

free bird makes the album

It’s Lynyrd Skynyrd, so I recognized most of the songs. A good road trip album. A few songs that were new to me. I really liked the ragtime piano in Things Goin’ On.

I'm in a weird place with this album because I mostly like Lynyrd Skynyrd's music but it simultaneously rubs me the wrong way for a reason I can't quite place. It's probably partly their politics, probably partly that it's been overplayed, probably a little bit because my dad always kinda hated Skynyrd. Or at least learned to when he lived in Georgia for a year or so. They were still some of the best that southern rock had to offer. I Ain't the One, Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Free Bird - all great tracks that I've heard a thousand times before. The other ones didn't really impress me much but it's a rare album that has 100% hits.

Free Bird and Simple Man are peak, rest is solid too

I'm sorry. Supernatural has changed my brain chemistry about this type of rock. All I could think about was Dean giving me the silent treatment while driving in his car, simply because I forgot his pie. Now Castiel is giving me a soft look, saying, “Don't worry, he is usually moody when it comes to this stuff. Happens to the best of us.” At least I think that's what he's trying to convey, but it turns out he just noticed I've been staring at him this whole time trying to find any answer to what the fuck Dean is so pressed about. Now we are just staring at each other, slowly blinking, and it gets more awkward as it goes on. So I eventually poke his eye, to which he reacts and asks what that was for, and that makes me unsure of my actions, so I start to feel a little bit bad, but I brush it off by shrugging and saying, “Your eye looked ticklish.” To which he is more confused, so I just try to be nonchalant and mysterious by looking out the window. I may never know why I poked his eye myself. A mystery unsolvable even in my wisest moments 🔎 PLUS THIS ALBUM LITERALLY HAS FREE BIRD ON HERE!!

Decent 4

Llega a 4 por el solo de guitarra de free Bird nomas

i remember my dad playing the album while cleaning the house. This is a very childhood centric sound to me. Not sure if that makes the album good or bad but it definitely alters my rating.

I listened to the original release of this debut album (eight tracks). Four of the tracks still receive frequent airplay, even after almost 55 years. “Free Bird”, the final track, is the band’s signature song. Lynyrd Skynyrd has several good songs, including a few on this record. Overall it’s above average for me.

God Tuesday’s Gone is so damn good, this is a re-listen album for me

Loistava levy. Pitää kuunnella vielä uudestaan. Freebird pelkästään riittäisi arvioon. 4/5.

Enjoyed early 70s rock sound. Thought they were much more metal

Good music made by racist assholes.

No shot the dudes that died in the plane crash would have voted for Trump but they're dead and the survivors seem more normal so unironically a good ass album. Wall to wall classics.

Enjoyable.

This was warm in a way I wasn’t expecting. It’s gritty, but somehow quite comforting and has this sunbaked feel I really enjoyed. The whole thing has this down-to-earth presence, like it’s not trying to be anything it’s not, just exist honestly in its own space. Nothing feels overly polished or theatrical but it still feels very confident. It’s the kind of album that values feel over perfection, and that warmth carries it more than any individual moment. And I mean I don’t have to say much about Free Bird.

Very van morrison

Surprised how much I liked it.

Я не люблю кантри и это типично американскую южную музыку, но просто не могу устоять перед плаксивым стратокастером вместе со слайдером и невероятным гитарным соло!

an enjoyable listen, toe tapping stuff ....

They were a great band, there's nothing unenjoyable here. The famous songs (Free Bird and Simple Man) do eclipse the rest of the material, though. Still, the jam session at the end of Free Bird is worth about three stars on its own. I'm too exhausted to research the ethics of the Confederate flag thing in too much detail. If it turns out they are/were bigots I will modify my review but I'm not sure that's clear cut.

Its easy to be smug about Skynyrd, especially as a yankee with no positive feelings about white southern culture. But the truth is if I was in some dive bar in some small southern city, and these guys took the stage, it would be a great time. Guys could shred. Simple Man pushes this from 3.5 to a 4 for me

I initially came in thinking this was an easy 5. Politics aside, this is probably *the* most important Southern Rock album ever. And it is a 5, at least in it's most lauded tracks - "Free Bird", "Tuesday's Gone", "Simple Man", and " Gimme Three Steps" still all pack the same punch as the first time I'd heard them. What is keeping me from giving it a 5 is the remaining tracks on the album - "I Ain't The One", "Things Goin' On", "Mississippi Kid", and "Poison Whiskey"- which, while quality compositions with a lot to like, are far more indebted to the blues rock influences of the group, and far less genre defining and iconic. Nonetheless, I'll forever play a disgustingly stank-faced air guitar along with the entirety of the 3+ minutes of solos on "Free Bird". This is a high-end 4. Favorite Tracks: "Free Bird", "Tuesday's Gone" Least Favorite Track: "Mississippi Kid"

Surely the most requested live song of all time? FREE BIRD!

This is pretty great. Obviously Free Bird is incredible but I really enjoyed the rest of the album too.

Lite forhold til dei utanom to låtar. Trur eg kan høyre meir på dei framover.

Pretty remarkable debut album. For all the stereotypes about LS, they’re absolutely a top band of all time in the southern rock category, and this album has four all time 70s rock anthems. Simple Man is pretty hard to beat. 4.25

No one has time for Freebird.

Elite guitar

Svängigt och mycket bättre än förväntat, trodde verkligen de var ett lökigt tråkband men det här var ju tamejfan bra

jag är charmad!!

Enjoyed this album, surprised to know 3 songs from it, heard in tv shows and movies

RIP LYNYRD SKYNYRD

I knew I’d like this album, as I have a few bits on CD, good to hear them at their earliest, some good tracks on here.

Хорошо, но однообразно

Yesyes

хорош, как и всё в жанре классического рока

I’ll get my only negative out of the way first. Didn’t like Mississippi Kid at all. Such a shame since that’s all that is keeping this album from five stars. As for the rest, bloody brilliant. I know the hits from Skynyrd but this is my first time listening to a full album. Free Bird is obviously a classic but from what I’ve heard from them Simple Man is by far my favourite song. Top Track - Simple Man

it gives me vibes of metallica, slow but songs with meaning. love it

What a beautiful intro - never heard an amazing introduction in a while - given that it's a rock album. Very impressed ngl. Tuesday's gone - very sad ballad but the rock elements in this make it very comforting at the same time, feels like a hug during a tough time - specifically - you've gotten a bad news and there's someone comforting you as you are going through all sorts of emotions Gimme Three Steps - sounds more upbeat from the previous song the moment it begins. SImple Man - love the advice presented in it - "And don't forget, son, there is someone up above" " Forget the lust for the rich man's gold, all you need is your soul" "Follow your heart and nothing else" "Oh, be something you love and understand, Baby, be a simple kind of man" These songs stuck with me but I really love Tuesday's Gone, will have it on repeat for a while, that I know. Album rating: 4/5, just because the intensity in the first half kind of dies and clashes as we get onto the end, but lovely introduction to 70's rock

Simple man.

Enjoyed it. Made me wanna listen to more country type songs

7/10 – Good

unfortunately, i really liked. this.

They popped off

Best-Freebird Awesome rock album. The guitar definitely highlights this band 4/5

Classic southern rock album packef with great, timeless tracks.

super nostalgic for me personally

Southern Rock at it's best & another one of those classic first album. Also in my opinion another guitarist's album. Well crafted songs with riffs & solos galore. & of course....FREEBIRD!!

Good stuff, dobry album. W ogóle całe to zamknięcie utworu i albumu to świetne instrumentalne szaleństwo.

Great album, but there is not enough highs to get to this legendary status. "Free bird" is probably strongest point of the album and good enough to end in some Tiktok viral video.

Any album with Free Bird on it can't be bad! I've never listened to Lynyrd Skynyrd because I always assumed they were at the heavy end of rock which I don't like much. However, this ablum has shown that they're OK so I won't avoid them so much in future. Some tracks were a bit repetitive with guitars and rythym but there were more that weren't so on average the album was pretty good.

I can't believe that the majority of the songs that I know from Lynyrd Skynyrd are on one album, and that it was their debut. That's insanity. Great great album. This would have been a killer party album

I mean, come on, this is a quintessential album. I like & know every song. (even if i prefer the Shinedown Simple man cover) I even seen them live back 13~ years ago & they - shocker - played free bird at the end lol I love how some of my reviews end up being thoughtful, well written & flowery while others are 'ounga bunga song good band better' lmaooo i think it depends on the time of day i write 🤔 Favorite song(s) - Tuesday's gone Gimme three steps Simple man Poison whiskey Free bird (shoutout guitar hero 🫶🏼) Rating 1-5 ~ 4.2

I really like Lynyrd Skynyrd since long time ago. The entire album was pleasure to listen to.

I find it hard to rate Lynyrd Skynyrd as I like their style - e.g. the simple but non-standard harmonic structures as in "Simple Man", their overall groove as in "Poison Whiskey", their guitar playing as in "Free Bird" or the piano arrangements as in "Things Goin' On" - but there is not a single song that I distinctly like. I cannot even say why - maybe it's due to the country vibe that blurs every good idea through repetition before drowning it in clichees or due to their lyrics that I just cannot relate to. Still a good album.

Awesome. Wish it had a better flow but this was great

I have complicated feelings about their personal stances on certain issues.... BUT, I'd be lying if I said this album didn't slap. When I was learning to drive in my dad's old beater pickup truck, this was one of the cassettes we'd listen to and Three Steps never fails to remind me of the taste of freedom.

Recognized more than just 'Free Bird.' Enjoyed more than I thought I would! =

free bird is the greatest song of all time. every song on the album could've been literal recordings of people blasting violent diarrhea out of their ass and free bird is good enough to make up for that

Really good album. Simple Man and Free Bird are exceptional.

Love love love

Some all time classics. 4/5.

Love me some heavily southern rock. That swamp sound just can't be beat.

4/5 WOOOONT YOU FLYYYYYYY FREEEEEEEE BIIIIRD YEAAAAAHHH. Good album. Good songs. This was very Southern.

It’s Skynyrd. A good solid rock album. Probably the best one of them

not the best album of this group, repeating itself in places, but nevertheless, if you like the music of this group and, in principle, all classic rock, then this album is a must-listen. Of course "Free Bird" most classic American rock song, you must listen this album for this song 7.5/10

Really did not expect this to be such a fun listen! Happy to have heard it!

solidan album, klasican rock, zadnja pjesma free bird bengercina

One of the most challenging aspects of completing this project is the struggle of separating the art from the artist. Ryan Adams used promises of fame to elicit sexual favors. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and David Bowie have been accused of having sexual encounters with children. Kanye West is a raving lunatic. But today brings a new kind of hesitation, in the form of the debut album of Lynyrd Skynyrd, a band with a long history of using confederate iconography during their live performances. I’ve lived in Texas my whole life, so I’ve been exposed to plenty of confederate imagery throughout my life. However, when Skynyrd’s music was something I listened to regularly, I thought the confederate flag stuff was tacky and low-class, but it wasn’t something that I had a strong distaste for. These days, any sort of confederate iconography is an instant turnoff for me, mostly due to… *gestures towards the universe*. I know half the songs on this album very well, but I’m really curious to see how I’m going to feel about this album when I listen to it today. Despite my feelings towards Skynyrd’s politics, I think this debut album of theirs is really good. The best parts of this album absolutely soar, and I will die on the hill that “Tuesday’s Gone” is one of the best classic rock songs of all time. Ronnie Van Zant’s vocals are excellent, and it really sounds like the band is having a ton of fun on this album. Musically, the guitar playing does about 75% of the heavy lifting on this album, but the blending of country, blues, and hard rock sounds is really unique, and there’s no one else who does southern rock like Skynyrd. While “Tuesday’s Gone,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “Simple Man,” and “Free Bird” are all memorable and great songs, the rest of the album feels like filler to me, and at times, this album is so flat, that it sounds like it was recorded by four guys in a garage, and not by the seven-person ensemble featured on the cover. Still, the best parts of this album are so good that they make the other songs a fairly distant memory. Some notes on the individual songs: I really liked the fuzzy guitar on “I Ain’t the One,” and Ronnie’s vocals were really good here too. Skynyrd’s sound is so distinctively southern in a way that no one else is able to replicate. “Tuesday’s Gone” is one of the best classic rock songs of all time. I love the lonely wail of the mellotron and guitar, and that slow tumbling percussion perfectly portrays a man ambling away from his heartbreak. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a southern rock song that feels so genuinely reflective and sad as this song. Ronnie’s vocals really shine here too. He’s able to hit those lonely wails so well, but there’s also there’s sharp moments where he punches up the intensity to convey his heartbreak. This song is so damn beautiful and emotional, and I think it’s perfect. “Gimme Three Steps” is so much fun. The vocals are excellent, and the lyrics do such a good job of telling the story, that you feel like you’re standing inside a honky-tonk, watching this scene unfold. The cowbell is perfect, and I love how the percussion adds more fills during the chorus. “Freebird” has been a meme of sorts in classic rock for some time now, but I still think it’s a great song. The lyrics are a tad cheesy, but man, that guitar solo is so much fun to listen to. Every section of it is imbedded in my brain, even though I haven’t listened to it in over a decade. The build-up over the first half of the song is great, and the wait is totally worth it when those guitars start to wail. I saw Skynyrd at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo back in 2005, and one of my favorite parts of that night was walking down the ramps after the show, and some drunk guy kept bellowing ‘give me back my bullets’ to mock all the ‘freebird’ chants that were still going on. I bet that guy posts some great stuff on Truth Social these days. Pronounced is a really good album, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed listening to it today. I especially loved revisiting “Tuesday’s Gone,” “Freebird,” and “Gimme Three Steps,” but the whole album was a pretty fun experience.

I went in knowing a few of the songs. "Free Bird" is one of those songs that you've heard at least once. The album was very cohesive, each song sounding similar but not too similar that everything sounded the same. I really enjoyed "Tuesday's Gone" and "Mississippi Kid". I would listen to this album again.

pretty sure I knew every song on this album

Really enjoyed this whole album. Anything that ends with Free Bird has to be good

Classic southern rock from the '70's. Part of the soundtrack of my life.

I loved it. It's just my type of rock, the one I would wake up to, a Sunday morning, while hitting the shower. It's also very popular, which isn't surprising, butbik surprised I've never heard of it before. Loved itt, I'm gonna add it to my Library.

definitely a band whose name I know, but am realizing I don't know much of their music! Even the infamous Free Bird! A good bluesy deep dive. Shame about the logo, haha (HW) Fun but same sound (jt)

Overall 8/10 I ain’t the one - 7.5/10: I like it it’s very fun Tuesdays gone - 9/10: this song is sooo good I really like the way it sounds very beautiful, perfect speed gimme three steps - 7/10: I mainly jsut didn’t like the chorus simple man - 10/10: SOO GOOOD. I just love this song so much. things goin on - 7.5/10: not bad just not my taste so I can’t really get into it mississippi kid - 7/10: kind of boring poison whiskey - 8/10: good, fun, just not really for me free bird - 10/10: iconic so good

There was freebird. And I really like the bass in some songs.

Solid album! I liked it.

pioneers of southern rock , i love it. this my music taste man. mr banka!!!!

somehow even though most of these songs have been played too many times, and I am quite sick of them, a listen all the way through this album proved to be quite enjoyable. Still rocks.

I liked this more than I expected and it grew on me over the course of a few listens. Maybe 3.5 but rounding up because it's solid throughout, good songwriting and good performances.

Free bird will always be a classic but Tuesdays Gone just hit in a way that made me reminisce on something that never happened to me. You get me?

3 absolute bangers 2 alright songs And a couple of okay ones

I already knew the big four of the songs on here, but all eight songs are straight rockers (or just about.) They have/had crazy good energy especially in the album opener "I Ain't The One." Southern rock is an interesting sound for sure, and never fails to transport you 'way down south in Dixie. Lynyrd Skynyrd definitely knows how to make anthems. Highlight Song/s: "Tuesday's Gone" and "Gimme Three Steps"

This kind of rock makes me feel like a little kid in summer when my parents are cleaning the house and I’m avoiding the floor (wet) and my dad’s CDs are playing. Faves are Tuesday’s Gone, Simple Man, Poison Whiskey, Free Bird. Gooooood shit!

Love me some 'murican dad rock 1. I ain't the one ⭐ 2. Tuesday's gone ⭐ 3. Gimme three steps 👍 4. Simple man ⭐ 5. Things going on 👍 6. Mississippi kid 👍 7. Poison whiskey 👍 8. Free bird ⭐

The epitome of what a classic southern rock album aims to be, equipped with big guitars, lots of drums, and a thick southern drawl. Only eight songs on the album but four of them are bangers that have stood the test of time. Great listen.

Three top 100 songs in one album! That’s like half of this album too. Are the other songs up to par with the likes of free bird, Tuesdays gone, and simple man, no but they’re alright. Gimme three steps is like my dads favorite so it’s been overplayed, things goin on was really good and I had never heard, i ain’t the one isn’t very memorable but it’s alright, I forgot about poison whiskey and Mississippi kid is just not good. Overall I still would give it a high score just because of the three greats.

4/5 love the vibes, guitar is immaculate, some songs run long (that’s kinda the whole point tho)

OK - For the record. I hate Lynyrd Skynyrd as much as anyone. I've been going to bars/pubs/restaurants/puppet shows with live music for a while now, and inevitably SOMEONE will play goddamn "Sweet Home Alabama" and everyone goes nuts, and I throw up. That being said - the A side of this one kills. Four excellent Southern rockers in a row. The B side is almost as good; I'd never heard any of these songs before (except "Free Bird" of course), and they were strong. I especially enjoyed "Poisoned Whiskey." But yeah. Those songs are great and then - "Free Bird." Which is a bit of a joke 50 years later, but in the context of the album - it's fantastic. Overall - this is a very solid FOUR STARS

Great album and good guitar soldering it. I did enjoy simple man so I would consider that to be a good deep cut off the album. Dad owns it on vinyl so it’s great to fully listen to it.

I don't even play the drums but this album got me pretending like I'm playing it.

Alright. Free Bird carries the album.

Great start, mid mid, then Free Bird <3

It was good it had some songs that I recognized. Not something I would listen to for fun but still good

Very nice. Det er sgu god rock og de gjorde åbenbart 3 guitar tingen til en populær måde at køre lyd på (Call and response). Synes det er skide god musik, men det er også sådan noget southern rock jeg har lidt mixed feelings omkring.

Can't really think of many bands who 1) have just about all of their hits on one album and 2) that album being their debut. And those hits are great for sure. But the stuff in between is lacking. It would be a 3.5 but I will be generous and round up.

i ain’t the one - 8/10 tuesday’s gone - 9/10 gimme three steps - 8/10 simple man - 10/10 things goin’ on - 9/10 mississippi kid - 8/10 poison whiskey - 7/10 free bird -7 /10

A whole lotta fun. Pure 70s, southern rock vibes, with some great riffs. Really enjoyed.

Very polished act even though it's their debut, side A is very good and side B has freebird

Top notch record even before it hits Free Bird!

Classic stuff.

Listened to this 3 times on the bounce, i had heard it previously but forgot how thunderous the opening track is, I aint the one.

Old people music that I didn’t mind!!! I remember buying a Lynyrd Skynyrd shirt when I was in middle school because a friend of mine and myself loved saying the band name. I had buyers remorse and returned the shirt the next day. I didn’t think spending $20 on a band shirt from vanity back in 2005 was worth it for a funny name. I didn’t listen to the band!!! Wouldn’t have been able to name 3 songs without my dad around.

Purrty bangor rekerd, I’ll reckon!

I’ve never been much of a Skynyrd fan, mostly because of their (mostly) white trash, rebel flag waving, Jack Daniel’s swilling, “the-south-will-rise-again” chanting fan base, but this album was pretty rad. The musicianship alone stopped me in my tracks. I could do without some of the semi-sexist lyrics, but I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed listening to this record. Still, I will forever fucking hate the song “Simple Man” because of all the horrible, God awful covers I’ve heard from dipshit cracker rednecks in the Country Rock world throughout the years… (don’t tell anyone I said this… but the original is actually pretty sick).

Great record. A classic.

Bangers

Not heard much from them very good upbeat rock

Very fun southern and blues rock, some songs were very reminiscent of classic blues songs

I am now cultured

Wow. I can't believe with how obsessed I've been w greta van fleet I didn't look closer into their predecessors. This album was amazing beginning to end. I just earlier today watched a video about the movie Sinners and I couldn't help but be reminded of the music in that movie during my listen through. Especially the song Mississippi Kid. It really puts into perspective where we get the roots from a lot of our modern music, and how few of their descendants are at the forefront of the popularity of the genre. I'm trying too hard to say it in poetic ways, but what I'm trying to say is that lynyrd skynyrd's sound, at least on this album, is very much borrowed from black people. And I can't help but notice everyone in the band is white. It makes my feelings while listening a little complicated. But this album was definitely a good experience, and I will be adding some songs to my playlist for sure. After more listens, I can confidently say I am a fan of this album.

Not a huge LS fan, but so many classics.

Nice it was great! didn't have never heard so was nice to hear.

Freeeeeeee biirrrrrd

I knew half these songs going in, enjoyed them, and enjoyed this album

Of all the 70s rock we've listened to so far, this has aged the best. I think there's also some nostalgia here for me, but I genuinely enjoyed listening to this one. Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, and Free Bird are my favorites.

these dudes rock. between Simple Man and Free Bird this album could pretty reliably help squeeze out a big manly all-american tear

I went into this not expecting much. Sure, I've heard the hits, and Simple Man and Gimmie Three Steps are awesome. But a whole album? Nah. I didn't think I was up for it. But, this is really good. I know that people have their issues with the band. But frankly, people have issues with Pantera too and I still listen to them despite Phil's antics. The best part of this album is that it doesn't have Sweet Home Alabama on it. It does have Free Bird though, and frankly, it kind of drags the album down a bit. Sorry Free Bird lovers. Been there, done that, don't even think it's their best. But Gimmie Three Steps. That song is an absolute beast. Same with Simple Man. Tuesday's Gone is a much better song than Free Bird too. Then you get to round out the album with the lesser known, but still great tracks of Mississippi Kid and I Ain't The One. It isn't a 5. Not quite that level of great and I can't give it a historical significance bump here. But way higher than I expected to give.

Culte ?

An interesting benefit of this 1001 list is that it leads me to give a fresh listen to all-too-familiar bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd. I heard their hits so often that I stopped truly listening decades ago. Now, with some distance and with the assignment to hear an entire album, I can appreciate the talent again. Great guitar riffs, energizing piano, some bravado, some humor… really good stuff. Definitely deserving, 4/5, and I can understand if others go higher.

Regardless of the classics, the rest of the album holds up. Highlights are Things Go On, I Ain’t the One, and Tuesday’s Gone, the latter of which does drag a tad long but is still compelling. Overall the album is great as a whole, with a compelling Rock/Country vibe, jumping solemnity and playfulness, with familiarity helping make it an easy first and repeatable listen.

Album No. 0087 on my list. Obviously I've known "Free Bird" before, but for some reason, the rest of this album was completely new territory for me. Don't really know why, I guess I should have listened to this before. Anyway, I'm not sure what to make of this album. I think I like it, despite the fact that in my mind, it's mostly confederate stuff and eight minute guitar solos. I'll certainly add "Tuesday's Gone", and "Simple Man" to my playlist, beyound the obvious aforementioned "Free Bird". Still, I'm not sure about the rating though. 4 stars because there is some really memorable stuff on here? Or rather 3, because it's still not my cup of tea? I've had the same issue for my last review, and I actually let a coin toss decide. Because I'm terrible at making decisions, I guess I'll do that again. Well, 4 stars it is.

Great album!

Familiar with a couple songs. Easy listening, nice background while cooking

simple man and free bird can only carry this so far

FREE BIRD

General thoughts: When I got this album, I was asking myself: "What the heck is southern rock?" Well, southern rock is modern country, that's what it is. Actually, this album is half modern country half swampy blues half insane SOLOS SOLOS SOLOS. But for Lynyrd in comparison to other bands, this is a positive aspect. Lynyrd is a masterclass example of good solos, mainly talking about guitar, though there are also piano solos. The superb execution, the cadence to make ‘em exhilarating. They can get away with making a song half-solo half-lyrics without making them boring (e.g. Tuesday’s gone). And by effect, this is a fun album, performance-wise very entertaining - not so much in other aspects - but anyways, time goes fast listening to this album. The guitar work in general is amazing, the layering of up to 3 guitars is perfect and basically carries this album. Bass/drums/voice are fine but are no match to the lead guitar. Lyrics are totally redneck though, the laidback chilling type, not the hardworking kind. Always unintentionally funny. As an album, the setlist doesn’t feel correctly structured, production is notable in some tracks and falls behind in others. No added value. Outstanding song(s): Free Bird Weakest song(s): Things Goin' on, Mississippi Kid Cover: Lame Real rating: 3.75

Great stuff, Free Bird hits even harder when you listen to it as the conclusion of an epic album
