Reviews (page 6 of 13)
Great stuff, Free Bird hits even harder when you listen to it as the conclusion of an epic album
good classic rock! listened it it a couple times, there's definitely some classics but the other tracks fall a little short in comparison
3,5 aufgerundet.
I'm from Alabama so I think Lynyrd Skynyrd is required listening for us natives even though the band is actually from Florida. But there's no denying this is some great Southern fried rock n roll, although I'm a little burnt out on them after all these years of indoctrination. 4/5
GROOVY!
Pretty good 7/10
- ui juma tää varmaan släppää, simple man ja free bird samalla plattalla - oli hyvä meno, nautin koko matkasta
An album supposedly dwarfed by a historic rock anthem in ‘freebird’, it confounds expectations of a dumb southern rock record with some varied approaches to playing and writing. Impressive band
Um disco clássico de rock, bem produzido e tocado. QoA Cloudscape.
Ive heard of these guys before.
Really good album
I really enjoyed this one. I managed to listen to the entire album in 2 sessions and didn't feel it was too much. Works for a lot of different moods
Tuesday’s gone is an absolute track. Obviously free bird is pretty difficult to fight. No low points. Probably just not my sound for the most part. 3.5/5 if I could do half stars
Soy una persona simple. Escucho buenos riffs con solos emocionantes y me ganan.
These are several genre defining songs on one album. There's a pretty high level of quality, originality and interest to this album. Like about a quarter of the artists on this list, they have a shady past, it doesn't ruin the listening experience though.
I was sim-racing, and when Free Bird kicked out, my laptimes improved by a second
Great. Not perfect but amazing debut
Men Free Bird da...
FREE BIRD!!
I was not expecting to enjoy this album as much as I did. This has been one of my biggest listening surprises so far on this list (504 albums so far). This is one song away from being a perfect record. The guitar tones and solos, oh, the solos.
Dope
Surprised I have not listened to this record previously. Surprised how much I really liked it. Love the guitars and Southern rock ethos.
Fab - you could listen to this all day. Free Bird is obviously the draw but Simple Man is probably even better - there isn't a bad track on the album.
varied for a rock album. i like the piano and the banjo (?) on mississippi kid was feeling indifferent until free bird WHAT A SONG also feel like the demos are better than the proper songs? idk
Great Album - Although Freebird is on this album - Tuesday's Gone is the best song on it.
Not a fan of all the racist bs the band was into, but I do enjoy the music
Freebird... 3.5
4/5
The epitome of early 70s southern country blues rock.
These guys absolutely have shit views and opinions but man southern rock absolutely rips
Great vocalist, great guitarists, interesting songwriting, tight execution, nice recording, sincere delivery, classic FM radio rock: what's not to like?
I am a big fan of Lynrd Skynyrd. I never found a band that was similar to them and I have heard the track "Free Bird" hundreds of times but I will never get tired of it. It was jam packed with tunes that I liked and the addition of "Free Bird" is what made me rate this 4/5.
Nostalgia
I was familiar with Simple Man and Free Bird but wasn't a big fan so I was pleasantly surprised when I liked all the other songs better.
It's a little bit like Led Zeppelin, if only you'd take out like 50% of the blues out of the songs and instead replaced it with a little bit more of a pop sound. So yeah, a little bit like Led Zeppelin, but BETTER than Led Zeppelin.
One heck of a debut. Don't overdo it listening to anything beyond the first 43:03 mins. Keep it tidy and imagine you dropped the needle on this collection of songs for the first time, and it's easy to understand why this band became as big as it did. Now we have to cut through the noise of nostalgia and whatever other baggage their name has accrued. Even I can't believe I could give the record five stars, as I've never counted myself among their fans and certainly didn't listen to this when I was young (my POP liked his rockers, but for some reason he was on some other side of the divide).
Väga hea blues rock album, mille lüürika keskendub just tavainimese hädadele. USAs üpriski kõmutekitav bänd, aga ausalt öeldes ma siin plaadil rassismi ei tunne, pigem just klassivõitlust ja Lõuna-Ameerika ühtsust.
Pretty good. Didn’t pay attention to the demo versions.
Some good grooves, and "Free Bird."
7.8 give 4
I'm thankful for all the comfort listens this week. 4/5
This is an undeniable classic for southern rock and rock in general. Hard to argue with a 5
Type of rock group I wanna hate but just can’t.
Good southern rock (but not too honky tonk) knee slappin' fun.
This is the best soundtrack to driving a pick-up truck in the countryside. It also contains the classics. Simple Man is an amazing song, Freebird could have been shorter. Overall, I liked it more than I thought I would.
Some of the tracks are a bit long but the tracks are classics
Amazing. Love this music.
So many classics on their debut album! I'd never fully listened to this, but recognized many of the tracks and had a great time listening to it all. (and of course, Free Bird brought me back to that scene in Forrest Gump as it always does, perfect music selection for that scene)
I liked this more than I expected.
Elevated at the end by Free Bird.
Pretty interesting actually.
Great album. Didn’t realize all those hits were on one lp
Kind of like an extended jam session. Great musicianship but not something I’d listen to loads. But when it bangs it does bang
I fucking love Skynyrd, and will always go to bat for them - this band was so much more than Sweet Home Alabama, and their debut is a rollocking rock classic. Great playing, great tunes (including a cultural icon), great lyrics, great vibes. Favourite tracks: Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man (amazing run of three tracks on side A!!), Free Bird (of course)
Original albums are such a better experience than Greatest Hits.
Good
The music is good as far as kind of country hard rock goes. Maybe they could've used their talents to tell people that racism and reckless driving are bad, mmmmkay?
Great stuff. Lots of classics on this album. This was sort of on the border between three and four stars, but Free Bird put it over the top. Absolutely love that track.
Upon getting Leonard Cohen's debut album a few nights ago, I asked my wife if she was familiar with his music. Her response was something to the effect of “I’m not, but I know Lynyrd Skynyrd!” I didn’t even realize “Lynyrd” was meant to be pronounced like “Leonard” until I saw the title of this album, so I may have incorrectly corrected her on that one. Sorry Mandy – love you tons. Prior to today, I could have only named "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" from Lynyrd Skynyrd's catalog (and I hadn't ever actually listened to the entirety of "Free Bird"), so you could say I went into their debut album largely blind. I’m glad that ended up being the case because this one was quite fun to experience with minimal expectations! These guys really know how to write and perform Southern rock. There’s honestly not a bad song here – the highs are high and the lows are still pretty good! "Tuesday’s Gone" is only the second track and it’s good enough that it could have been an impactful closer on any other album. I say “any other album” because "Free Bird" really is the perfect ending here – after dozens of minutes of buildup, the sensation is almost orgasmic when it finally gets to that iconic guitar solo. It goes crazy for like four minutes and only lets up when the track eventually fades out mid-solo. I was genuinely tempted to give this album five stars because of how good "Free Bird" is, but restarting the LP from the beginning helped me snap back to the reality that this is a four star album with a really strong finish. Even so, I think everyone listening to Free Bird without the seven tracks in front of it is doing themselves a disservice – the payoff is worth the wait and the wait is filled with solid tunes. Completely separate note, but I never noticed how similar Ronnie Van Zant sounds to Anthony Kiedis (or vice versa, I guess) until today. There were moments on this one where I genuinely felt like I was listening to RHCP. I hope I’m not the only one who hears it! Highlights: Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Things Goin' On, Mississippi Kid, Free Bird
Great album, probably not everyone's cup of tea. I thought the album holds up well as a whole and sounds great - good producing on this one. Closer to the Allman Brothers than Molly Hatchet, doesn't fall into too many Southern rock tropes (or maybe they all came from this album!).
I am not a "Play some SKYYYYNYRDDDDDDDDDDD" fan. But this is a good album pretty solid all the way through.
Solid album. This is a real corn festival barbecue playlist. Anywhere that sells ribs is playing this album regularly. Solid songs. I didn't know that Tuesday's Gone was their song. I think the quality is omnipresent on this album. This isn't necessarily my go to vibe, but the guitar/bass solos are bangin and the drums are really good throughout. The songwriting is solid, and I have no complaints on the album. Some of the more minimal songs are less interesting in my opinion. Mississippi kid for example is a fine song, but it just didn't grip me. Ideally this should be a 5 song album, but It is better than my expectations and I will be bumping a few of these from time to time whenever I buy a smoker to cook ribs
Thanks to Drive By Truckers, I have more context for appreciating this. Something about the Southern rock thing really works for me, which is a recent discovery. This album rips
Gud ol suthrn rok
Skynyrd’s first album is fully formed - that Southern Rock sound, twin guitars, piano, rooted in the blues. The first side contains “I Ain’t the One”, “Tuesday’s Gone”, “Gimme Three Steps”, “Simple Man”; the second dips a little, still good but less memorable, but it ends with the glory of “Freebird”… The first side proves there was more to Lynyrd Skynyrd than just that song, and maybe “Sweet Home Alabama”, the last track proves they were a great band.
It was great I really enjoyed this album
Has a full, realized sound that overstays its welcome because, save for the guitar solos, the riffs are pretty simple and repeated heavily. "Well, that's music, idiot!" Yeah I know, but music at 3 minutes vs 7 minutes doesn't make me go "ok yeah I got it." So that's the thing I dislike up front, because otherwise it's a solid basket of tunes. Songs are too long and the album is too short, even if it feels like parts of it (back half) can't rise up to the rest of the songs.
Southern Rock Legends with all their legendary songs. Simple Man is too good & gave me the feels. Mostly cuz that was Mother/Son Dance at my wedding reception. I'm tempted to give it a 5 but it's a 4.
3,5/5
In its own lane if rock that I hadn’t gone too far down. It’s better than I expected even if it’s still not really for me. I get why people never moved on. Like the souths Beatles, honestly would prefer people go back to this than the creed revival we’re seeing right now.
I always forget about Skynyrd. I'm not huge into Southern Rock, but there are some good tracks on this one. I Ain't The One, Gimme Three Steps, and Free Bird all added to Liked Songs.
Free bird kinda drags up an otherwise ok album
4.3
very good. 4/5.
this was a fun album
Listening to this really underlines what a pale mutation stuff like Kings of Leon is
As a Neil fan, I feel obliged to hate this. Truth, it's pretty good.
Southern rock that hasn’t lost its appeal.
🆓🕊️
I enjoyed this one. Free Bird is the best song but a number of the tracks had me tapping my foot.
Impressive album! This album had went in many cool directions. I got to listen to Freebird in its original context
high quality dad rock
whole lot of classics
Great southern rock
Det finns fyra bra låtar. I aint the one. Simple man. Tusedays gone och free bird. De två senaste är ju snorbra. Peak är mellanspelet halvvägs in i free bird. Övriga låtar är rätt B. Vilket är lite märkligt. Tråkig bluesrock. Men känner mig generös
Riktigt bra och varierad skiva! Simple man och Free bird är fantastiska, Tuesday’s gone riktigt bra och resten bra (med nåt undantag). Stark fyra.
Debut. American 70s rock. Very classic rock, some great songs. Gets a 4 for Freebird.
7/10 Favorite: Tuesday’s Gone
All time classic
Du bon vieux rock comme on l’aime
There are so many 70s rock bands on this list. This was another average record by one of them
Free Bird (it's just alright) being the most recognizable song is a disservice to the rest of the album.
A nice surprise. Not a bad song on the album and the non-hits were all surprisingly good.
Did not need to listen, I know this by heart. A classic of its genre.
Great country rock, definitely some of the stronger music from the genre I've heard. The guitar solos on this album all go insane and it has some pretty deep moments. I can't really understand why my parents hate this band so much since it isn't for the Florida trademark flavor of Southern Racism™, but I like this album a lot. Of course, it ends with Free Bird, so the album automatically isn't hateable.
Fine album of grooving rock. Liked every track and even Freebird still sounds good after so many listens/plays on the radio.
They might not have been about the same things that I'm about, but damn if they couldn't make great sounding music.
LS can be considered one of the rock and roll GOATS. I can't say for sure if that's true. But damn can they jam! Everything member brings a Steeler contribution to the sound and that southern twang plays nicely into their tune. With classics such as Simple Man and of course Free Bird. This is a Steeler album. Damn near a 10 for me but something is holding me back. A solid 9 put of 10 though. Rest in peace
If I were reading individual songs, they would get anywhere between a 2 and a 5. Some songs are boring, others are done is the most iconic and influential songs of their time. It wouldn't be right, in my opinion, to rate this anywhere below a 4. Simple Man and Free Bird are among the most influential songs of the decade, and I feel they are good enough to elevate the rest of the album to a 4, although without them it would likely be a 3 from me. At the time of this review, I haven't had time to listen to the demo tracks at the end. I will listen back to those and update my review if they change it.
Very good! Had no idea they were a credible rock band, I assumed it was parody
Undeniably good.
Great opening track. Classic closing track. And a lot of good stuff in between.
IM A SIMPLEEEEE KIND OF MAAAANNNN
Sgt. Pepper, but peppier!
Enjoyable
Southern rock legends, gone before their time. Luckily family kept the band alive and produced some of the most well known of all time. Sweet Home Alabama is still one of the most requested songs of altime.
Great album full of some of their best songs. The album has the energy of a first album - it has desperation in the delivery. Tuesday’s Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, and Free Bird are all classics. I Ain’t The One, Things Goin On, Mississippi Kid, and Poison Whiskey aren’t at the same level, but they are solid songs, well recorded and entertaining.
Day 53 First listen- This has so many classics I had already listened to almost all the songs before. A solid record! (4/5)
- I ain´t the one - 7 - Tuesday is gone - 8,8 - Gimme three steps - 5 - Simple Man - 9,2 "Be a simple kind of man, be something you love and understand" - Things going on - 6 "Won't you stand up and scream? 'Cause there's things goin' on that you don't know" - Mississipi kid - 4 - Poison whisky - 8 - Free Bird - 9,3 One of the best guitar solos I have ever heard-
Super album mais ça pue le suprémacisme à plein nez cette histoire !
Classics for a reason.
Freebird! Freebird! Freebird! what more do you need. it's a classic.
Sehr cooles Rockn-roll Album, hätte ich nciht gedacht
Quality album. Knew Free Bird (obviously) but was happy to hear the rest was also good
Classic and so fun to listen to!
When I listened to Lynyrd Skynyrd in the 70’s, I heard them as a rock and roll band. Hearing them today, after 40 years, I am surprised at how country their sound is; and, how unique the LS sound remains. Following this album, I listened to their 50 Years Live at the Ryman concert. Wish I had been there. Will listen to the Ryman concert in the future:)
Shocked by how much I liked this album.
I was not expecting to like this album as much as I did. I knew a couple of the hits off the record, although I can't say I have had much else from them. This album was energetic and perfectly rock-y.
Always had Simple Man in my saved songs but never gave the album it came from a listen (or any Lynrd Skynrd album for that matter). Enjoyable album, second song is too long (7+ mins) but to finish it off with Free Bird is automatically top tier album.
It was a really good album—probably the one that feels closest to my heart so far. The songs carry a kind of nostalgia. Simple Man and Free Bird stand out the most. Listening to them feels like driving down Route 66, pulling over at a dusty old bar where cowboys and sheriffs might have once shared stories over a drink.
Free Bird is an all time classic. Hard not to give any album with a song like this a 5... some other great tunes too... But im gonna save my 5 stars for the all time great ALBUMS, not songs... But Free Bird is ALL TIME.
Fantastic album. Some incredible tracks: I Ain't the One, Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man and of course Freebird. Showcases the best of Country / Rock.
Helluva an album.
It is pretty incredible that this is their debut album and has so many of their iconic songs. I think there is a pretty big drop off from the 3-4 big hits to the other 4 songs on the album. Biggest surprise for me is Tuesday's Gone. I don't hear that as often, but that might have been my favorite track.
Hard to give an album that closes with "Free Bird" anything less than 4 stars - agree that it's rare to see a band come blazing right out of the gates like this (see also: MGMT). Hadn't heard the songs outside of the big 4 but honestly quite liked the groove on "Poison Whiskey", the others were a bit more forgettable but fine. Not a band I listen to regularly but they certainly have their place in the annals of American rock.
Easy listening, enjoyable guitar licks and solos, definitive southern blues-rock vocals. Like it!!
Es el grupo q tuvo un accidente de vuelo. Mezclan rock, country y blues. Canción favorita: free bird
siiiiiigh. Free Bird fucking rocks and the rest of this is a nice bowl of collards with potlikker. the confederate flag shit was always gross but i'm not gonna lie and say this isn't an awesome listen deserves to be one of the 1001? fuck it yea why not
Much better than expected, feels reminiscent of 'large band' indie rock despite there being a lack of direct influence. Captivating, imperfect vocals
Riktigt go rockrökare. Brakar loss riktigt fint emellanåt. Topparna är otroligt höga men den svajar en del. Ett måste i skivsamlingen!
Was suprised how much I enjoyed this one, lot of fun.
Would buy.
The heavy riffing songs are the epitome of swamp music. That opening drum groove on "I Ain't The One" really sets it all up. I'd be surprised if that hasn't been sampled for a bunch of hip hop songs. I never need to hear "Free Bird" or "Simple Man" ever again. Those have lost all their punch due to being overplayed, and Free Bird just being a straight up punch line.
Some classic tracks
Good Old School Southern rock. I was impressed with the number of solid tracks on here. Without Freebird I would have given it 5 stars.
Some songs are amazing, others are kind of boring. Still a very impressive album that I enjoyed listening to. 4
The quintessential Skynyrd album. You don't need anything else than this. It has all the songs you want to hear from them. With the exception of Sweet Home Alabama. But that's definitely their most popular, not necessarily their best song. Great southern rock.
A great time. Vibrant
This is very rocky rock. A solid rock album by a solid rock band.
Favorite Track: Simple Man
Enjoyed the album A couple of songs I quite enjoyed, pleasant listen, solid album. Probably needs a couple more listens to sink in and “love” any of the songs.
Evokes memories...
Fav song: Freebird
Normally I get annoyed with 1970s blues rock but this one is too good to ignore. Great songs, performances, and production.
Southern Rock without Lynyrd Skynyrd, regardless of how its pronounced, would feel very hollow; indeed, the ultimate 70s rock jukebox is compiled here to not only serve up noise to fill a room in an effort to play air guitar and sing along but to gather realizations of where certain sounds came from after a fair bit of wondering. Lynyrd Skynrd show good amounts of promise of this first record and this core has the potential to make Southern rock even more of a juggernaut and something to take seriously. Favorites: I Ain't the One, Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Things Goin' On, Free Bird.
FREE BIRD!!! YEAH!!! This album is pretty dang good. Skynyrd songs get a lot of play on the radio, so I didn’t know whether I’d be bored by the album since I know literally half the songs. But I was actually pleasantly surprised. Skynyrd’s is the first band people think of when they hear the phrase country rock, and it shows how the innovated the genre on this album. There are simpler songs on this album, such as Gimme Three Steps and Mississippi Kid, but where the album shines is it’s more complex compositions, such as Billy Powell’s graceful piano solo on Tuesday’s Gone, or Allen Collin’s unforgettable solo on Free Bird. Collin’s, along with Gary Rossington, bring some great guitar riffs and solos into the album, and the whole thing is held together by Ed King and Bob Burns on bass and drums. But, let’s not forget about good old Ronnie. Ronnie Van Zant’s vocals on these tracks combine both the southern influences country, and the power of rock and roll into one performance. The album can be inconsistent though, where you might have a bit of a back and forth between really good songs, and some mediocre ones. But overall, a pretty solid album, now, I’m going to ride off to my next album while listening to the Free Bird Solo.
Way more fun than I was expecting!
Soundtrack of my youth
I had always stayed away from Lynyrd Skynyrd because of their ridiculous image (I can’t take seriously a band that calls an album "God and Guns", sorry), but apparently the original founding band had very little to do with the parody that LS has become (as a matter of fact, every single musician playing in this first album is now dead, so it’s literally not the same band...). Well, I’m glad I gave a chance to their debut album. It’s an excellent Southern rock offering, really impressive for a first effort. Almost every track is an instant classic, and they obviously had a huge influence on many later bands (yes, I’m looking at you, Guns N’Roses). A solid 3,5* going on 4*.
Free Bird one of the best songs ever created. Favourite Songs: I Ain't the One, Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Free Bird. Least Favourite Songs: Things Goin' On, Mississippi Kid.
Excellent. Surprised I hadn’t listened to this sooner
A band I've always been aware of, but up until now my familiarity with their music never extended beyond "Sweet Home Alabama" (which is an absolute bop, albeit has been overplayed into the ground). What the hell have I been playing at? This is really good. Irritatingly, I couldn't find a version of this on Spotify without the silly demo tracks tacked on at the end, but the album itself breezed by and immediately felt homely to me. That Lynyrd Skynyrd sounded this assured and fully realised on their debut is mightily impressive, and a clear blueprint exists here for the formation of the southern rock subgenre. Definitely a fully warranted inclusion in the 1001.
Impossible not to compare to Drive-By Truckers' Southern Rock Opera once you've heard them both. This one has the better songs, but that one says George Wallace is in hell for using racism to get ahead, so that probably about evens out.
Never heard of lauryn hill songs outside her band Actually quitr enjoyed this
Great southern rock album. Free bird. Enough Said.
Great debut, great tunes
This is my first 'album of the day', and a great way to kick the tradition off. Truthfully, I was a little reserved about whether or not I actually wanted to listen to this. But keeping in spirit of the project I figured I need to go for it (and listen through) either way. Some really good stuff on here. Reminded me of how much I enjoyed jam-band music at one point. I like the vibe and flow of this a lot better than most classic rock. Musically intricate and soulful. Half the album are standout songs: -Tuesday's Gone -Simple Man -Free Bird These must have been instant classics. Tuesday's Gone is such a sweet, sentimental song that instantly activates nostalgia. Just real musical delight. Freebird has to be one of the hardest songs ever written. Feels exactly like a man grappling with his own mind before breaking out into flight, really earning the *bird* symbolism by the time the 5-minute long jam is unleashed. I'm a bit at a loss for words for how loving some of this music is.
I've heard this album before and it's a good one. Again, not far from my taste
8/10
Starter ganske midt på treet, men blir bedre og bedre utover plata
This has to be one of the strongest debut albums of all time. Regarding the racism, Neil Young controversy, etc....go listen to Southern Rock Opera by Drive-By Truckers. An entire double length album attempting to explain the duality of The Southern Thing. If you (like me) are not from the South, it helps put all of these complex undercurrents in perspective. It is also a kick-ass rock album in its own right.
4 stars Is it possible this was chosen because of the release of Happy Gilmore 2, with “Tuesday’s Gone” prominently appearing in the original? Anyway, never listened to the album, but was familiar with half of it. Was pleasantly surprised. A fun album that rocks, solid songwriting, great guitar work, and classic tracks. Will return to it at some point in the future.
Pretty good
Didn't know that "Free bird" was their song, that's cool! It was used in Forrest Gump lol
This was a great album, melodies and lyrics were unique and I can see the influence in a lot of my favourite modern bands. I particularly enjoyed free birds, simple man & gimmi three steps. Had some of the other songs retained this level of individuality it would have been my third 5* album
Hell yea Freebird! Good old southern rock. Lot's of people in the reviews are hating on Skynyrd's politics, but Ronnie Van Zant was actually pretty liberal and supported Jimmy Carter.
Ännu ett grymt debutalbum! Hinner bli lite enformigt men Free Bird är ju otrolig
Lots a classics on this one. good vibe. 37 songs so getting done in one day is a tough task.
Groundbreaking album for Southern Rock.
What a debut album by what became the quintessential Southern rock band. With standouts like “Tueaday’s Gone”, “Gimme Three Steps” and “Simple Man” plus an all timer in “Free Bird” this album balances hard, bluesy rock with slower ones. All of which puts the talent of the band on display.
absolutely love it
Me gustó, al igual que el de Bruno le saco 1 puntin por las vives yankees (menos pronunciadas en este disco) pero de igual manera me dan ganas de sentarme en una reposera a tocar el banjo mientras se me destila el licor y pienso que prima culiarme
You know what brother hell yeah
18/1001 :: Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ✅ Rating: Strong 8 Fav Tracks: Tuesday’s Gone, I Ain’t The One, Simple Man, Etc… I’ve never heard this album before but also I know this album…Ya know? Tuesday’s Gone is some freeway driving, hot as fuck, windows open, yelling lyrics at the top of your lungs type shit. Lynyrd Skynyrd is a bunch of rednecks; but maybe in the greatest way? It’s interesting because I don’t really associate with this lifestyle (being a Yankee), I don’t live in the south, but I can still relate and these songs are so badass no matter what Neil Young has to say about it. I listen to this album and all I can think about is how tragic Ronnie Van Zant dying is. These songs are so damn good. Also that guitar tone. And lastly…FREE BIRD. It’s so good it’s become a meme, but it’s really that good.
i didn't really want to give skynyrd 4 stars but they deserve it
Muy buenos!! No los conocía y lo he disfrutado mucho. Me ha encantado la anécdota del nombre del grupo
classic southern rock
en general buen álbum 7,5/10, mítico free bird que revive a un muerto y tuesdays gone que es buenisima
A fun album
The definition of classic southern rock. Possibly the greatest guitar solo of all time in Freebird
very good id only skip one song. all the songs here are fantastic by all means
Knew the name, knew the genre and internally groaned. I could not have been more wrong, this is an absolute banger. I knew so many of these songs already, its the high water mark for americana and is comes from the core of american culture like a stick of blackpool rock. The playing was top notch, the singing wasnt too annoying and this was a blast
3.9/honestly for a debut album it's actually pretty good, and of course freebird is the greatest guitar solo of all time. just some southern boys having fun with their instruments. vinyl was in collection.
Never listened to a complete album and I’m shouldn’t be but I am with how much I liked this. It’s really really good.
78/100
Some older kids at school once asked me if I liked Lynyrd Skynyrd, and I said “yeah, I think his music is pretty good.” They all laughed at me, and you know what? It’s one of those things I’ll never live down. Anyways, this album is southern fried rock and I like it. Cliche or no cliche, Free Bird is so good.
Another piece of classic American history. This feels as ubiquitous as the pledge of allegiance. Played at baseball games and every middle school talent show in America. I’m fairly certain that when the boys and girls separated for health class the boy’s group ended with, “and you all will attempt to learn Free Bird even though you have no other interest in learning an instrument. For some this will spark a life long interest in guitar. Some of you will even be lucky enough to play for the school one day. Then most of you will never pick up the instrument again.” That’s a silly way to look at it, but I don’t mean to diminish the album. There’s a reason we all know Simple Man, Free Bird and Tuesday’s Gone. Classic Southern rock
No nostalgia for this, only knew Free Bird. Still feels classic
Probably one of the best debut albums in history? So many hits. Free Solo was one of the first songs I learned on guitar. Tuesday's Gone is iconic. The whole album feels tight.
classic
Pretty good, good ol' southern rock classic.
This is a bang-er record. Simple Man is my jam. Iconic.
Classics: Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Free Bird. New to me: Things Goin' On & Mr. Banker (Demo). Listened to extended version on Spotify.
Great album. Forgotten how good they were. Middle of side 2 is a bit weak otherwise would be 5 stars.
Giving summer family reunion with a fat bearded uncle providing controversial opinions who is an expert on southern music because he went to New Orleans
It’s Elvis. Even this he married a 14 year old he’s the king
This sounds familiar and I've heard of the band, but can't put my finger on the opening song. A minute in and I really enjoy the guitar and vocals.
Love me some free bird.
I wanted to hate this
4/7
Lynyrd Skynyrd – Pronounced ’Leh-’nérd ’Skin-‘nérd’ (1973) Score: 7.5/10 Favorite Track: “Free Bird” This is a pretty solid album overall. It has that southern rock attitude, and most of the songs land the way you want them to. “Free Bird” is the clear standout and completely earns its status. The slow build into that huge solo still hits just as hard as the first time you hear it. It is one of those rare songs that feels bigger than the album it comes from. “Poison Whiskey” was a low point for me. It felt kind of forgettable compared to the rest. But even with that, there is enough personality and energy across the album to keep it engaging. It might not be perfect, but I would definitely throw it on again.
Great album! Full of great classic songs! Obviously!
Just a lot of fun and a great listen, and that's even without Freebird. What a song.
enjoyed this a lot more than i expected
Well, this was brilliant and better than I expected too. Great country blues playing. Tuesdays gone is literally all the aerosmith ballads. Crying seemingly particularly ripped it off though. I could hear a bit of Anthony Keidis' vocals in simple man too. I guess they've been very inspirational to a lot of bands. There was a bit of a dip in the 2nd half of the album, but it's ok cos... ...Free bird absolutely wails.
I used to know a nerd, lynyrd Skynyrd are definitely not that they are just a simple man (or men) chasing that free bird. 4/5
First time listener here. Enjoying it far more than I thought I would.
Free bird but this is actually fantastic, unique rock for the time (finally)
Hyvät vokaalit, kitaran vinguttelut. Helposti menee kuunteluun myöhemminkin
Freebird!
Good ol' Southern Rock album. This is another situation where I'm not a fan, but I respect the craft. Liked Songs Added: Poison Whiskey Free Bird
If a fresh listen, this would have been amazing. I’ve lost taste for this music, though.
Хороший альбом, люблю эту группу
This is kind of like a greatest hits album from a band that you don’t really know that well. 4 half the songs are out and out classics, and the other 4 aren’t all bad. I like Skynyrd’s sound. They have a nice southern groove about their music. I’m less keen on Van Zandt and his posturing when he gets his socio-political, but his voice suits the laid back southern sound. I have this album and I listen to it regularly, and I think it deserves a place on the list.
This is a good album showing the versatility of the band. It has a lot of their classics on it.
Damn this was good! Simple man and free bird were amazing!
Classic album. Generally the singles are better than the deeper cuts. Simple Man being the best track on the album. For my money, Green Grass and High Tides by The Outlaws was always the better epic southern rock song vs Freebird. Green Grass just kept the same feel and vibe through the whole song, even in the solos, whereas Freebird switched it up and I always felt the two halves of the song kinda fought eachother. Still a great track, just overplayed.
pretty dang good.
Great album all around, music is wonderful, lyrics great, voice excellent, like the guitar and harmonica
All the hits that I know from this band, and some new stuff with nice blues guitar.
Couple of classics, holds up pretty well but not a world beater 4*
Essential listening for anyone who’s tryna drink some beer. Skynyrd are the kings of southern rock for a reason, and it shows on this album. Short and sweet but almost every track hits hard. They have an amazing songwriting quality where each composition feels more like an epic than just a song. Regardless of its actual content, each song invites a distinct feeling and experience. Also my dad loves this album. Fav Track: Free Bird
Liked this more than I expected. Solid classic rock album.
Having never listened to this album before I was surprised to find that I had never listened to just half the album before. Wow, half the album are huge classics. Now that’s a debut album.
The Allman Brothers were the godfathers of southern rock but Lynyrd Skynyrd made it cool. Maybe one of the greatest debut album of any band of all time. Nearly every song on the album is still widely played today. In a time when being a southerner was maybe losing part of its meaning, these guys helped redefine the culture.
good album. it's got pretty much all you would ever want from skynyrd. there's a handful of good-to-great songs on here which is what you need. the more album cuts off of here don't really do a whole lot for me. side a is way more loaded than side b (free bird notwithstanding). but ultimately, it's a fun enough listen. good, not great.
J'allais dire que c'était un peu convenu sans être mauvais, MAIS FREE BIRD PUTAIN.
👍🏻
Great album
Chyba zmieniam się w starego rednecka, bo podoba mi się ta płyta i to nawet bardzo. Melodyjna, rockowa, ale z zaśpiewem country. Daje pozytywnego kopa i trzyma uwagę aż do końca. Szczególnie cenię sobie wokal frontmana. Będę do niej wracać. Mocne 8/10, bo mimo że utwory są długie to mi się nie dłużyły a to spory sukces!
What I love about 'One album A Day' is that it brings to light albums like this one, which I wouldn't otherwise have heard. Really rocky and enjoyable songs. Love the guitar and drums on 'Simple Man'. Simple but awesome groove.
good rock/country album; nothing of note except for the fact that the most popular song (free bird), was, in my opinion, one of the worst songs. 8/10
First half better than the second, but still all around good stuff.
I was expecting just another rock album from a band I’ve never heard of but I got way more than that. The first four tracks were extremely strong for me. I was already hooked by the first song. The next three songs were a bit of a lull but still a fine listen nonetheless. And then it ends off with Free Bird, nuff said. Great album.
Surprised how much i liked this. Just a solid album of great southern rock hits and some country style fun
Free bird!
1ere chanson : énorme entrée en matière 2ème bof Simple man et three steps les meilleures de l’album Puis meh jusqu’à Whiskey, et fini en banger avec free bird … Énorme 1er album, dommage qu’ils soient confédérés
Nice, easy listening
It’s undeniably stacked. That run of songs is ridiculous. Like a greatest hits that got pressed accidentally. But man, the baggage. It’s Southern rock with too much shadow. You can’t untangle the legacy from the rot. I wish I could hear it like I did when I was twelve. Before I knew better. It's like eating your favorite childhood cereal and finding out the company funds hate groups. There's great music here, but it’s wrapped in a flag I want nothing to do with. Spins: 3 Playlist Additions: - Tuesday's Gone - Gimme Three Steps - Simple Man - Free Bird
Great, classic, southern rock album. Some of the most classic songs of it’s era. 8.5/10 #42/1001
Consistently very very solid, with some very strong hits. Strong 4, maaaaybe 5, it's just not my favourite type of rock.
Some great classic rock sounds on this album. Such a tragic story. This is right up there in terms of Southern Rock height
As southern as southern rock gets. Good hard driving rock with an edgy guitar right up front.
it's pronounced Pronounced 'Leh-'Nérd 'Skin-'Nérd!!!! A really good album. Iconic from it's time. the 70's was something else.
What an album! It’s got such style and swagger, punchy songs and incredible vocals. “Free Bird” is the stand out track but I love “Tuesday’s Gone” (having been introduced to it via the Dazed & Confused soundtrack in the 90s) - it’s an interesting choice for the 2nd track on the album following the rip stomping opener “I ain’t the one” but definitely holds up. It’s a dynamic they use throughout the album but it keeps you on your toes. A true classic!
Great songs !
There’s no question that this album is a classic, and “Free Bird” will forever be a rock staple, but honestly, I’m pretty burned out on these tracks. They’ve been played so much that it’s hard to feel the same excitement anymore.
I enjoyed it. It’s got Free Bird, which is essential. I listened to an extended version with 5 demo tracks at the end, and the demos were honestly my favorite part. Good stripped down versions of the songs on the regular disk.
Was not a Skynyrd fan back in the day but I didn’t realize just how many of the songs I knew and liked. There we no passes son any of the songs - there were all solid.
Among the great albums - but not the greatest!
I'll pronounce it however the hell I want! Great album though. Might have to pick it up on vinyl. Used to listen the crap outta Tuesday's Gone back in the day. That said, I think Gimme Three Steps is a better choice for the playlist.
I kinda hate myself for liking Lynyrd Skynyrd this much. The guitar solos alone could carry this album through.
Honestly pretty iconic in my eyes. Old country has a small place in my heart. It's wild that 4 huge hits were on their debut album! Really came out swinging. It's simple, it sounds great, it's just good fun. Seeing from other reviews that they're problematic which is disappointing but not unexpected. I don't really think that's what this project is about but I understand. I'm against supporting modern artists who are like them but once it's this far removed with time, I can't really care much.
Free bird, four stars
This was pretty great
I like this, Missisippi Kid is perfect.
Kelpo levy! Hyvää tunnelmaa ja onnistuneita biisejä. ”Tuedays’s gone” kappale joka menee suosikkien listalle.
Outstanding. Can't wait to listen again
Free Bird
Liked this surprisingly more than I thought I would solid album nice country rock also freebird has to be one or the best album closers
Fantastic album with probably half of it being the best song on some soundtrack or another. I don't know if I love the order of the tracks, but free bird is about the perfect way to end any album.
I can't imagine how anyone on this planet could have not heard most of the songs on this album already. It has kept Classic Rock radio alive and been in countless beer and truck commercials. "Play Freebird!" has been part of the cultural lexicon for fifty years now. When stripped of the Confederate flag imagery and outlaw biker club-wannabe fanbase, it's a pretty fine Southern Rock album.
I've always liked this band more than I probably should.
Genial debut. espectacular free bird
8/10
8/10
Classic
Great bangers from these guys
Lynyrd Skynyrd was just built different. The bluesy, Southern-style rock and intricate melodies set them apart from other bands in the same era. This album is Southern rock staple, and for good reason. I Ain't The One, Tuesday’s Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Free Bird... i mean, the hits just keep comin'.
Solid Southern Classic Rock album. Besides the classics Simple Man and Free Bird, other great songs include the strong start with I Ain't the One and the surprisingly catchy Poison Whiskey. Tuesday's Gone is the hidden gem of the album: introspective and timeless sound. Their first album was a no skips one, respect
Have you listened to Lynyrd Skynyrd before? If so, yep this sounds like them. The highlight is obviously Free Bird to close out the album. Overall, it pretty good, just what you expected it to sound like.
Prijemny jizni rock, zas poprve poslechnuty album, o trochu nudnejsi nez Rolling Stones
Couple bangers on this album, but the standouts were the ones I already knew - Free Bird and Simple Man
Can you have a better first 4 songs for a brand new group?!!!!? Absolutely incredible. A few throw away songs but ends perfectly with Free Bird. Rick Hall didn’t miss much but he missed on this one.
Surprised me! Simple Man is a peach of a song. 3.5 is probably more accurate but felt kind so rounded up
This sort of squawking bare chested 70's guitar soloing is the best thing in the world if it catches me in the right mood. Not all of this album is great, but that isn't overly important due to it featuring 'Tuesday's Gone', 'Gimme Three Steps', 'Simple Man' and fucking 'Freebird.' Come on...
Country rock isn't really my thing. But enjoyed this album over their greatest hits album
Tuesday’s gone,Freebird. What beautiful songs. A classic rock album.
Almost all gas and the brakes were good, too. Free Bird is actually GOAT'd people just meme it too much. 8/10
Free bird hits so hard, but I really enjoyed Tuesday's gone. Feels like an era song of rock Americana before we even had that word. Hard to believe it's 1973!
As classic Southern Rock as it gets. Just good American fun 7.8/10 Favorite Song: Free Bird
A relic and a great album to listen to, great lyrics and songs to listen to in a moment. Legendary tracks to spend the time to.
These guys are just good at what they do. This album would be a hell of fame greatest hits for most bands.
Great hits and also liked the ones I didn't know!
Very good
Strong album
When Sloan wrote “it’s not the band I hate, it’s their fans” it might have been about Skynyrd. Great album front to back, had the volume maxed out on “simple man” at 7:45am
4.4 The use of Free Bird (the remix anyway) for sporting events and internet clips really ruined the song for me, but it was refreshing to hear the original version again. Side A hits a little harder than Side B but I guess you can say that of most albums.
Haven’t listened, but it’s been on my list
I'm not the biggest Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, but Freebird rocks. That song single-handedly makes this album a piece of rock history. Best Songs: Simple Man, Free Bird Worst Songs: I Ain't The One
Classic hangin with dad in the garage music
Yes Freebird is one of the most overplayed songs of all time but it's still a banger.
i’m gonna be honest outside of free bird i don’t think i’ve ever listened to lynyrd skynyrd?? they rip this was fun!
Within genre - 4.0 Listenability - 3.5 Likelihood I'll return to it- 3.5 My overall rating - 3.67 Very nostalgic, remember listening to hits with Dad as a kid. Standouts are Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, and Free Bird. I love the front man's voice and guitar runs.
Some great songs. Probably closer to 3.5 but would listen to again
Not sure if they invented or just perfected the rock n roll ballad but they really bring it.
4 stars
Great album all the way through.
