Let the led out! 🤘🏼
A great debut and a great synthesis of southern rock.
Great album, I really like Tuesday's Gone! You know I never thought about the range of this band, they play all kinds of styles. Somehow I didn't realize they did both Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama!
Surprisingly solid throughout. I obviously knew a few singles before hand, but the whole package was good.
I liked Simple Man and Freebird and the rest was okay. Those two were definite standouts though. 3/4*
Really interesting rock álbum, free bird is such a tune
So many classics on here. Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, and FREE BIRD! What an album.
1973: A great year for music. Genre defining Southern Rock. Half of the songs are only good, half are iconic landmarks.
Amazing first album for a band
Free as a bird to pronounce it however I like 3.7/5
Classic
FREEEEEEEEE BIIIIIIIIRD
Good album with some all time great hits. Four of these songs will live on for many lifetimes. The album almost seems to get lost for a few tracks though. If I could give it a 4.5 stars, I would.
The hits start coming and they don’t stop coming. Tuesdays gone, gimme three steps and simple man is a helluva three song line up. These guys are pure 70s rock and fucking roll. From the badass guitar licks to the manly sensitivity. They would change every Contruction site forever with these jams. What a goddam epic Free Bird is. Every bar band breathed a sigh of relief when it was usurped by Wagon Wheel as the most shouted request. A great time and definitely full of classic rock anthems.
Surprisingly soulful
Simple Man is one of their best.
Really enjoyed this. The classics felt strongly supported by the songs I knew less well. Not too long, smooth, succinct, rambling...
What's not to love about this album. Half of this album contains some of the best well known rock songs in the 70s. And of course no one has lived life until they hear Free Bird. There is a bit of a lull at the latter half of the album but as a whole, truly a tremendous piece of classic rock.
Great classic album. Lots of hits. Great intro to southern rock
4 stars
Den var bra! Påminner väldigt mycket om Creedence. Min favoritlåt från albumet var Gimme Three Steps. Den får 4/5 stjärnor då jag tycker att de kunde ha varit lite mer skillnad.
8 songs, all of them good. Nothing wasted on this album. Tuesday's Gone and Free Bird are great as always. This album is always good for a listen.
Classic rock album. Loved hearing songs that weren't Free Bird. But Free Bird is awesome too.
Southern rock. Because the Confed-flag only 4.
FREEEEEEE BIIIIIIIIIIIRD YEAAH
Classic for a reason! A damn-near perfect blend of rock, blues, and Americana.
Loved the non-hits from this album. They got a little same-y but still fun. I didn't ever thought about how much they sound like a proto-Black Keys. Obviously the three bangers are all timers from this album. Kind of a perfect album for sitting around in the backyard. I'd give it just a shade under 4 stars. Definitely one to pick up used sometime.
Bangers
tuesdays gone 👍 mista banka songs from this time were always so long !
Sounds good
This is hard to beat. This sounds less like a band trying to fit into the Southern rock slot and more like a band that can't help it.
Considering I've owned this album for over twenty years, it's hard to be objective. It gets frequent spins, and I am confident I'm not alone in saying it's been a bit of a touchstone for southern rock where my listening habits are concerned. Here's an uncontroversial opinion, though (at least, to my mind); it ain't as good as their next album, Second Helping. That said - the harder numbers, like Poison Whiskey, I Ain't The One and Gimme Three Steps all shine. They possess a swagger and a greasiness that is utterly infectious. The balladeering is top notch, too. To have one song of the calibre of Tuesday's Gone is a triumph; but to follow with the arguably superior Simple Man represents an embarrassment of riches. I suppose we also have to talk Free Bird, a song meme'd to death, its title a dull thud in the mouths of concert hecklers much in the same vein as the 'mashed potato' imbeciles at golf tournaments. However, it's impressive, and despite its grand scale never slips into the smug aren't-we-great noodling the Allman Brothers were prey to. A couple of other tracks are middling, and I hate the caricature the current iteration of the band embody. Skynyrd may have been southern boys, but they wrote sensitive and enquiring songs that touched on race, gun ownership and substance abuse. The pandering mob of today have little in common with the original band.
Proper bluesy rock. The deeper cuts are pretty bad but freebird is elevated 70s rock served with a bottle of bourbon to buzz it up
Bro this was good
Very nostalgic for me. Also helps that it’s just good music.
Rips.
Da kazem za pocetak da mi je southern rock bio na prvu seljacija i nije mi bio dobar. Simple Man i Free Bird sam u 2023 poslusao svaku bar 150 puta. Ostatak albuma mi je isto dobar, ali ove dvije pjesme something special. Tko ne zna neka malo procita o bendu, tko je poginuo i kako... I kako su nastavili nastupati...
dost dobar
Classic Southern Rock at it's finest.
Nice album Witherspoon iconic songs such simple man and free bird
great
I didn’t realize all of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s really big hits were off the same album, that’s impressive.
Amazing - Spotify radio for this album slaps
Really knocked it out of the park for this sound. It's a little rudimentary but the songs are so catchy you don't really care. Tuesdays gone, simple man, and freebird are all obvious highlights
Fun af southern rock
Confederate Flag imagery aside, this is probably the perfect Southern Rock album
Hahah this is great and growing on me. I'm going with 4 for now but feel this could definitely move to high rotation one day. Fave: Tuesday's Gone.
A pleasant enough listen! Being British I haven't been over exposed to them, so nothing felt too tiresome. Fave tracks - The ones I recognized, I reckon - "Simple Man" and "Free Bird"
Most of the songs are fun and well-played. A number of classic songs, most of which still hold up.
It's a classic. Great southern rock sound, gets into some good grooves, the slower songs are well carried by the vocals and melodic guitar licks. Tuesday's Gone and Simple Man are really great songs. What more could even be said about Free Bird at this point?
Great album - can you imagine hearing this for the first time ever? Great hits entering the world: Free Bird, Simple Man. Wow.
Classic
Solid album with a good sound and a couple of outstanding songs.
Very entertaining album topped off with the climactic Free Bird.
Had it before and it's a 4 again. Bangers throughout
Great bluesy rock!
It was three stars until freebird came along
Very good album. The latter half is a bit slow until Free Bird, but overall a very enjoyable, compact rock album.
A good album. Favorite song is "Free Bird," of course.
Excellent instrumentals, excellent lyricism, and storytelling, but the vocals are fine, nothing to write home about. Some of the songs weren't my favorite either.
Lots of classic southern rock with blues influences
01) I Ain't the One - 7,5 02) Tuesday's Gone - 9,0 03) Gimme Three Steps - 8,5 04) Simple Man - 9,5 05) Things Goin' On - 8,5 06) Mississippi Kid - 8,5 07) Poison Whiskey - 7,5 08) Free Bird - 9,5 TOTAL: 8,56 (86/100) I'm not very familiar with Lynyrd Skynyrd, except for the "Sweet Home Alabama" and the fateful plane crash. Few weeks ago I had to listen to Drive-By Truckers and their hommage to Lynard Skynard "Southern Rock Opera" and I was bored to hell. I was kind of afraid this would be similar shit all over again but, thank God, this is miles better.
Classic FUCKING FREE BIRD BABY FUCK YEA
Good stuff, recognized more songs than I thought. Also, Simple Man has some nice lyrics.
not bad...
Good old Skynyrd. Have always like them.
Free bird!!
Listening brought me back to feeling like I was 18 years old. Loved it then - enjoyed it again.
Hell yeah free bird
Solid all the way through.
classic album
Favorite tracks: Tuesday’s Gone and Gimme Three Steps
Iconic southern rock album! Free bird was the big hit but for me your can't beat Simple Man and Tuesdays Gone with the Wind. Last time I heard this record entirely was 40 plus years ago. My favorite radio station KSHE 95 out of St. Louis, MO introduced me to these lost icons of the southern rock genre. May they rest in peace.
Gimme three steps is my go to Karaoke song and free bird will be forever an epic roller coaster ride of soul igniting guitar magic. But what I was surprised at most was how all the other songs hold up really well and make the album overall really quite amazing. Not perfect but not far off. 4.5/5
I'm very well acquainted with most of the songs on this album. I carry six of the eight tracks as MP3s on my phone. I haven't heard "Mississippi Kid" and "Things Goin' On" before. The rest of the album is about as classic as classic rock can be. It's excellent Southern rock, and I'd suggest this album to just about anyone.
All in all, it's a really good album. I enjoyed the listen. Simple Man is such a good song. Even though it was written over 50 years ago, the lyrics still hold such a meaning.
I'll admit to being caught off guard by this album. The opening song was as I was expecting the album to be generic hard rock with an emphasis on bombastic lead guitars and very pedestrian song writing. But as the album continued I found the song writing to be anything but pedestrian. The band's strength is their way with a power ballad starting with song #2 Tuesday's Gone and culminating with the iconic closer, Free Bird each song is well paced and has interesting, well conceived arrangements. The album blends a lot of diffrent but complimentary styles and the band sounds at home in all of them. I slept on this album for too long. It's not just Free Bird and filler...its a really really fine album. 4 stars
好聽😍
Really good, surprisingly! No Sweet Home Alabama or That Smell thankfully [edit: I know I should hate this but I really don't! Holds up well on a second visit]
Really quite enjoyed this. I love the sound of the album. Free Bird hits really nicely as an epic closer. 4.3/5
Südstaaten Musik, Blues'ig
Singalong masterpiece I’d say a solid 7,5/10
You know what, this was pretty good. I really didn't expect to like this all that much, but it was solid. I'm not convinced they did anything truly groundbreaking here, and I'm definitely not the target audience for the "southern rock" thing, but they still manage to pull off some really solid songs. The first half is definitely stronger than the second half, but then it ends with "Free Bird". "Free Bird" wasn't my favorite song on the album, and it's a bit of a meme at this point, but it's still pretty good. "Tuesday's Gone" and "Simple Man" are both great too, just a generally solid listen here. Favorite song: Tuesday’s Gone Other: Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Things Goin’ On, Free Bird 12/25/23
A transitional album between R&B and hard rock, which inspired many other bands who left their mark. To be listened to while imagining drinking dark beer in a crowded and smoky pub, '70s style
Great album.
Skynyrd were a little less varied than the Allman Bros- you won’t find much jazz influence here- they’re a more pure take on southern rock, and put out some of the scene’s best songs right away. It’s a little overplayed but still about as good as it gets. B+
en något svag fyra
Mostly a fun listen. The southern sensibility on this isn’t as grating as some CCR.
Good, hard-hittin' southern rock from Lynard Skynard. Classic tunes like Gimme Three Steps, Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man (my fave on this album), and of course F R E E B I R D!!!
I mean what can you say, it is their debut album and they had prolific careers. It is a great launching off point for Lynyrd Skynyrd, and a really enjoyable listen.
Great album. Has some of the best work that Skynyrd has done. “Gimme Three Steps” is just a great track and obviously “Freebird” and “Tuesdays Gone” and classics. 4/5 Will listen again
This is a lot better than I was expecting. Good warm old style rock. Nice. Redneck. 9/10
solid classic 4.5
This is a really solid debut. I've never been a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan but don't dislike them either, just never really sought them out. This probably has the band's three biggest/best songs on it (in my opinion). I enjoyed listening through this one. The only negative I'd give it is that some of the non-single tracks on the album come off as pretty generic blues/country rock but they weren't bad, just not that unique or as interesting. Standout Tracks: I Ain't the One, Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Free Bird
Classic Skynyrd
Not as 'southern' as I expected, a solid rock album. Wide influences and some great tracks.
Wynyrd Skynard, cause this album is taking no Ls
Easily the best Skynyrd album there is. So many bops. and ending on freebird is just the icing on the cake. Tuesdays gone-Gimme 3 steps-Simple man is one of the most elite back to back to back songs on any album ever. This album fucks for sure. Gets a 4 bc there’s some weak tracks but the fire really shines here
Outstanding southern rock. Really like the feel of “things goin on” reminds me of my favorite zeppelin song “boogie with Stu” with the honky tonk style piano. The north Mississippi hill country blues feel to “Mississippi kid” drew me in As well. Not to mention the huge number of famous hit songs.
4.5
Great
Its better than Bad its good
Really nice songs on this debut album and Free Bird for better or worse... I prefer the live versions of many of these songs.
My kind of music. I'm bored of Freebird but only because I've played it a million times. Gimme 3 steps and Down south jukin are also favourites of mine.
Gimme Three Steps is a little basic but everything else is really good. Still don’t fw the Confederacy though.
Enjoyed this more than I thought
I can't believe this is their DEBUT album! Tuesday's Gone Gimme Three Steps Simple Man Things Goin' On (love the honky tonk piano)(political commentary) Free Bird Mister Banker (demo) great blues guitar sound
Four out of eight songs are still going strong. Pretty amazing debut album. Probably a five if I haven’t heard their hits so many times. Maybe not fair.
God damn it. I hate to admit it but all these songs are bangers. This album rips. I am not a southern boy by any means, but there is just something that makes me feel like this is the core of "classic rock". Blues, grit, distortion. It makes me wanna turn it UP. There are like 5 songs on here that you hear on the radio like every day. Crazy good album. Freebird gives me that good music goosebumps feeling and I've heard it hundreds of times. Best Track: Any crowd... They chant... they desire... a song... It is Freebird
"'cause, i'm free as a bird now, and this bird you'll never change" besides giving us the only get-out-of-jail-free card for speeding, and the world's most requested song, This album, the band's debut (and closest to self-titled) gives us a stellar tracklist, and with no skips. Beyond being the epitome of bar/uncle music, Lynyrd Skynrd gives us an album full of great guitar riffs, soaring solos, and groovy drums n bass. "I Aint the one" showcases the band's ability to write groovy licks, and to match the vocals perfectly to those grooves. "Tuesday's gone," and "Free bird" give us rock ballads, with the latter having one of the most cinematic sequences in the history of rock n roll. "Gimmie three steps" is the band's (successful) attempt at creating a southern-rock song that you could get up and dance to, and "Simple man" is clearly inspired by Bob Dylan, giving us a emotional track, with a hard rock twist. I really wanted to give this album a 3, but there's no way I could justify that in my head, so it's getting what it deserves, with a... 4/5
Some massive bangers. Dirty bluesy guitar lucks and melodies. The bands favourite meal on tour was famously fried tomatoes with parsnips and you can really tell
twas great
Classic southern rock.
cool
Honestly fantastic
Simple Man and Free Bird carry but the rest are good too
Just a classic
A great first album. Skynyrd shows their musical range and ability on this album full of songs about love and heartbreak.
Fínt ríki.
Tuesday's Gone & Simple Man are fucking tunes! very good album, 42 mins and Tuesday Gone & Free Bird account for over 16 mins of it
Banger. I ain't the one, tuesday's gone, gimme three steps, freebird. Freebird was my class song in high school. . . lol
FREEEEEEEE BIRDDDDS
Pretty solid, lots of sample references, set up for others in their genre to follow suit
FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEBIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRD YEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Heard it a million times lol
10/23/23. Southern rock classic with standouts I’ve heard before: Simple Man and Free Bird. More bluesy album than I expected! Not up my alley, but enjoyable album.
Great ablum but Freed bird has been overplayed blame it on the raido
Just the guitar part of Free Bird
Pretty good. I knew I liked Free Bird but found a couple others I like as well.
Enjoyed this!
Excellent album with way more well known songs than I realized.
Classics: Free Bird, Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man. Others: Things Goin' On, I Ain't the One 4/5
i aint the one. guitar jam, cool keys too. music and guitar tone reminiscent of aerosmith. tuesdays gone. classic, ballady, meh. gimme three steps. awesome bassline. fun jam simple man. top shelf song, good music, melody, chorus. things goin on. folky/bluegrass intro, cool riff then some bluesy/ragtime keys. mississippi kid. tinny diddy with a little slide guitar and finger style. poison whiskey. jam. guitar song, sweet riff. cool solos from guitar/keys. free bird. iconic, song is alright, probably so iconic simply from the solo, which is kind of a bluesy face melter. mr banker. classic blues sound. rhythm/lead guitar and vocals only. down south jukin. similar to 3 steps, kind of cool. demo versions.
My jam!! Great voice, great guitars! Sweet bluesy riffs!! An amazing southern rock album!! High 4!
Honestly so good
like doing a paper run in 2014. Gimme three steps, simple man, tuesdays gone, & freebird what more could you want
Free Bird
*****
Lynyrd Skynyrd Dit is wel mijn sfeertje hoor. Geeft me die heerlijke bayou vibes.
great jam band, hope to listen to it more
7/10
i liked it but hate freebird
Well, looks lyke I’m a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan! Really enjoyed that as an album and as individual songs.
Quite liked it as background music, a bit too country for my taste. Free Bird is iconic as ever though, significant boost in rating. 4 stars. Pretty cool solos.
Try as much as I might, I can't hate this music. It's just a classic album whose influence is obvious. It's a shame that Lynyrd Skynyrd helped so much to perpetuate the use of the Confederate battle flag and the myth that it wasn't connected to racism. The last surviving member of the original band did eventually denounce it in 2012 at least. This aside, the music is great.
i quite enjoyed this one, downloaded 2,4 and 8
Un autre album que j'allais de reculons et dont j'ai été agréablement surpris. Il y a Mississippi Kid que j'ai moins aimé, mais autrement le reste de l'album est très solide. Du bon southern rock sans trop tomber dans les stéréotypes. 8/10
ah, southern rock. the beautiful fusion of rock and country. and for my money, lynyrd skynyrd are the kings of southern rock. one song even had a bit of ragtime thrown in for good measure. this album is a stone cold classic. highlights: “i ain’t the one”, “gimme three steps”, “things goin’ on”, “free bird”.
Great album.
I mean, it's got Simple Man and Free Bird on it, two of the best sing-alongs ever to have been written. That said, some of the rest of the album felt like filler, but when on the same LP as such big songs that's always bound to happen
Freebird yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
It’s hard to deny the sheer greatness of these southern boys.
Not heard before but good first listen. Tuesdays gone the only recognisable song but free bird at the end very good
Overall good album. No bad songs and this album is culturally relevant for show casing southern rock. Plus Freebird is one of the most popular songs in America. Also it's funny that the singer is southern and pro gun control.
Classic tunes
Great American blues rock
Another fantastic album. Most tracks are definitely relistenable.
I liked it better than i had expected to. Three Steps and Freebird still hold up.
this is so great. but lacks the emotional connection i look for in a 5/5. if i wasnt so stingy with my 5/5’s this would be one. fav songs: tuesdays gone, gimme three steps, simple man.
One of the most iconic Southern Rock bands of any era, Lynyrd Skynyrd cut a swath of hillbilly blues rock that forever changed the foundations of what music could be.
Free Bird is so good
Great solid record. Rating: 4.3
Boy oh boy did this one surprise me! I loved this way more than I thought and couldn't believe how the lyrics to Gimme Three Steps are mostly all right there in my brain. There's a reason Free Bird is a classic. I was able to let go of the triteness and really enjoy this tune.
Bad people, good music
Fiiliskuvaus: Aurinkoinen elokuinen lomapäivä. Kävelyä autohuollosta kotia lämpimässä kelissä. Sopi täydellisesti hetkeen. Ja Tuesdays Gone, Simple Man ja Free Bird aivan mestariteoksia
Impressive debut album, includes "Gimme Three Steps" and "Tuesday's Gone" -- both fantastic songs well loved by fans -- and the instantly recognizable "Free Bird" and "Simple Man". They've got a unique style that comes across really well in the record... they basically invented "Southern Fried Rock" along with the Allman Brothers. Solid. Big fan of "Saturday Night Special"... not on this album, worth checking out.
Starts out like a greatest hits for those of us only familiar with the band from classic rock radio play. Then it changes to a fun regionally inspired blues rock vibe.
Good, honest southern rock.
I Ain't the One- 3.6/5 Tuesday's Gone- 3.8/5 Gimme Three Steps- 4.1/5 Simple Man- 4.3/5 Things Goin' On- 4.7/5 Mississippi Kid- 3.5/5 Poison Whiskey- 3.7/5 Free Bird- 4.8/5 Total- 4.1/5
AND BE SIIIMMPLEEEE KIND OF MAAAAN! free bird never stops baby!
Is Tuesday’s Gone a Free Bird troll?
I can’t argue that it’s a good album
I was not expecting to know so many songs on this record and to like them so much. I guess I just didn't really have a great grasp on Lynyrd Skynyrd at all, and I've kind of always written them off. Having a lot more context to these great well known songs in the structure of an album is kind of wild. This album is great.
I may not agree with their politics, but they do know how to rock
Free Birds is a banger, some other good ones on there too.
Great album that is all sort of a build up to Free Bird which really stands out above the rest. Some of the middle tracks are pretty forgettable, but overall the album is really fun and doesn’t feel dated the way some other albums from this time do.
eu escutei meio avulso também, mas achei digno de 8/10 só pelo final, que é o mais épico que um álbum poderia ter.
Album starts with a proto-hip hop beat. Was not expecting that one iota. They sound super tight on this opener -- I'm hooked. Definitely some weird sequencing on this first side. Its as if they are deliberately trying to send us on a sonic roller coaster. Going from the heights of the intro to Tuesday's Gone, then back to the honky tonk of Gimme Three Steps, into tender (at least initially) Simple Man. That said, I'm loving this album. Amazing this was their debut. Four major hits; one of which plagues every cover band in existence. Love Tuesday's Gone and will never not think of Happy Gilmore. I'm a solid 4 / 5 here. Great album with weird sequencing.
IM A SIMPLE KINDA MAAAAAAN. That’s a great song to sing along. Really enjoyed this one, surprisingly
contains classics
A guilty pleasure for. Supreme musicianship all round. Love it.
Well shit... I just want to listen to this sort of thing in a bar somewhere. I've heard a couple songs randomly over the years whether in tv soundtracks or random playlists and liked the sound at the time. I usually hate songs that go over 5mins and there are a couple onthis one but I really liked their sound enough to mostly forgive them for that.
The patient-zero of Southern Rock. Iconic for stereotypes and plane crash jokes, but Lynyrd Skynyrd have carved out a niche for themselves in American Music with this album. 4/5.
Enjoyed the two listens. Good southern US rock. Enjoyed Free Bird, Poison Whiskey, I Ain’t The One and Simple Man.
This album is a definite classic and throughout rock in general , free bird and simple man being the main points if it. Even though I'm not a massive southen rock / country listener I thought this album was really good and definitely should get all the credit its given. Amazing guitar, bass and drum work all throughout the album and brilliant musicianship.
The definition of southern rock. Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, Free Bird are favorites of mine going way back to my college years and earlier. These songs live on classic rock radio. Real guitar and drums are a bonus. Doesn't quite get that 5th star, but a fun and enjoyable listen nonetheless.
Genres: Southern rock, hard rock, blues rock Formed: Jacksonville, Florida in 1969 (Previously appeared in various names/lineups) Run time: 13 songs, 1 hour, 16 min This is the debut studio album by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The original album had eight tracks and the reissue has five bonus tracks that are demo versions of some of the original tracks. I love a song with a tale to tell and all these songs do that and do it well. It’s not deep or philosophical but covers the important cornerstones of rock ‘n’ roll (and indeed life): wine, women and song. Lyrically and musically this album is perfect. The maturity of the album perhaps stems from the fact that they had been performing these songs for some time before recording them. My Rating: ****
great music, good sound just good vibes love it
Literally half of this album is all timers. The best of the southern rock boom.
Me gustó mucho.
Pretty great album, some of my all time favorites are on this record.
No review in here can beat the one saying "I kept asking for them to play 'Free Bird' and then they did". Except that contrary to this review, I would give Lynyrd Skynyrd four stars instead of two. Or maybe even four-stars-and-a-half. You have serious classics on that first side. Plus, obviously, that flying critter and its incredibe solo, closing the proceedings at the end of side B. Five stars is out of the question though. Side B is *a little* patchy (except for its closer). And that thing with the confederate flag often shown in the band's iconography (fortunately absent for the cover of this LP), along with some of the lyrics overtones, didn't exactly age well, to say the least. Southern folklore, some boomers might say. Well, when you have the full picture, you just can't fool around with certain things anymore. Fortunately, in 2023, there are ways to address "southern identity" that are not offensive anymore. Or at least not offensive in the sense of "insensitive to the plight of African-Americans". See up-and-coming bands such as Chat Pile or Wednesday, for instance, who love to show the underside of the US South, and yet still display some sort of empathy for the white trash protagonists who live there. But that's a story for another time, kiddies. Number of albums left to review: 546 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 219 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 105 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 132
Celkem ujde. Bombový vibes a skvělá kytara. Ale zpěv to kazí Fav songa: Free Bird ale jenom solo, zpev je opet nic moc Nejmin fav songa: Poison Whiskey 7/10
Loved most of this. Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, and Freebird are terrific. Things Goin' On and Mississippi Kid are not.
4/5
Holy cow, so many big name songs. Def in the "you have your whole life to write your first album" category. A lot of range too, not just riff-rock.
The middle of the album really falters. Love the start and the end though. May just not be for me. I used to say I was a big fan of folk, bluegrass, banjo n the likes... maybe not as much, though?
Ok
Deze gaat goed
play some Skynyrd dude!!!
Never really been my thing but it’s hard to deny the quality on this. The upbeat songs are really fun and the ballads actually come across as sincere and are well played rather than just being cringy, unlike a LOT of rock ballads from this era. The guitar playing and vocal performances are fantastic, and the songs don’t seem to go on longer than they need to despite some pretty hefty runtimes. Not sure if/when I would revisit this but I enjoyed it a lot more than expected
I really like the vibe of this album. Plenty of nice tracks, good song writing, nice instrumentation. Free Bird is obviously a stone-cold classic, but I really liked Tuesday's Gone as well. 3.5/5 rounded up.
It really doesn't get better than this for southern rock music.
Simple man is absolutely my favourite song by them. This is a great album. None of this sweet home Alabama trash.
These guys, the music that they play, it’s salt of the earth. Tuesdays gone and FREEBIRD kick ass but the whole album is a safe pick for any BBQ, swim meet, commute to work, or etc.
I didn't realize how much I enjoyed this album. Is this dad rock? Excellent guitar. Great vocals. When the keys shine, do they ever shine. Also I had no idea the singer, guitarist, and backup singer (along with other crew) all died when their chartered plane crashed in 1977 - that got me down a little wikipedia rabbit hole. Free bird is also a 10/10 track. Really love Tuesday's Gone and Simple Man too.
They played Free Bird! The first half of this album is 5/5 without question. The rest is forgettable except Free Bird which is a masterpiece. I could easily listen to the A-side + Free Bird on repeat and it's peak southern rock. Some of the most recognizable Lynyrd Skynyrd songs are on this album.
Awesome guitars, good rhythms, good melodies, good vibes. Call me a basic southern white boy but this is good music right here Best song: Simple Man
These days it’s refreshingly simple with good ol’ boy vocals and unadulterated honest guitar work. Some nice tunes and musical compared to most of the tripe produced today.
One loathes their politics and avoids their fans whenever possible, but there's no denying the distinctiveness of their sound and the greatness of many of their songs. Strong vocals, awesome funky hooks and the authentic fuck-it attitude – they kinda had it all and made it look easy besides. "Tuesday's Gone" has a richly emotional and vaguely symphonic feel, a la Zeppelin power ballads (reminder this was before that term became ironic and tarnished thanks to hair metal bands). And note to editors: though slightly more redneck-y, LS is no more Southern than ABB, who are the better band, on balance.
It really is telling when your debut album sounds like your 'best-of' album. Even though side B might not pack the punch of Side A, there really is not a bad song on this record, and when the mood changes I can actually appreciate Things Going On or Poison Whiskey over Free Bird. Simple Man is such a Rock Classic is needs a star on its own.
Oh fuck yeah, it's that band that the Drive-By Truckers wouldn't shut up about! Tuesday's Gone? Banger. Gimme Three Steps? Banger. Simple Man? Banger. Free Bird? Banger. Lol I looked up Lynard Skynard on wikipedia and found this nugget: The Drive-By Truckers dedicated their album Southern Rock Opera (2001) to Lynyrd Skynyrd.[citation needed]
Brilliant
Need to listen again, but it's nice to hear all songs from this album and not just Free bird
I’ve taken Free Bird for granted for a very long time. What a track.
no heleppeoahan tätä on vihata mutta miellekästä musiikkia albumi täynnä. klassikko viisuja muutama kappale vaikka on tuo saatanan kitaran soundi vituttaan.. päähäm menee tollanen.....PÄÄHÄN........BLUES ALARM ALARM ALARAM.... välittömästi nousuun... ville nousiainen......voittaa vielä! OLYMPICS!!! simple man
Lots of recognizable songs but pretty boring as an album experience
Classic 70s southern rock, "gimme three steps", "Tuesdays gone", "simple man", and "free bird" are all classic tracks. Bluesy rock and roll, the whole album is great.
Don't think I've ever sat down and listened to the 'Skin-'Nérd's but I was pleasantly surprised, very easy listening. Tuesday's gone, Simple Man and Free Bird particular highlights and would all be great accompaniments to a wholesome movies end credits. Nicht so Bad
Notes kept resetting. Great album all round. Usually not a fan of this type of rock, but there are genuinely great tracks on here. My favorites are Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man and of course Free Bird.
Yeah!
Pretty good all the way through. Jams: Tuesday Freebird Simple man Gimme 3 steps
Yeah southern boys
Nice countrish rock. Pretty awesome behind the wheel.
I’m a sucker for Southern Rock, so really enjoyed this album. Almost every song is great and the guitar work is phenomenal.
Right up front: I went in with reservations. LS are associated with a demographic that I don't really vibe with. But this album kinda kicked ass? The songs are pretty great, and the musicians are impressive. And when your closer is "Free Bird", it's sorta hard to walk away disappointed.
Lynyrd Skynyrd’s debut is a high energy hit filled record that ends in one of the most famous songs of all time. Their guitar approach is steeped in the hard rock greats while being infused with country inspired licks reflecting their southern heritage. The playing is tight and the vocal delivery is fantastic.
Full of classic, iconic tracks. Demos aren't vital
Good
Absolutely phenomenal. one part country, one party blues, one part rock, one part honky tonk, this was pretty much one of my favorite albums so far. Like most folks I thought I knew Lynyrd Skynyrd. I thought I knew Sweet Home Alabama, and Free Bird, but this album was so epic and so iconic, and so fricking good! I listened to the whole thing twice and Free Bird at least four or five times. Can't recommend this album enough.
Classic! Love the bluesy southern rock!
It's a classic for a reason. 4 stars.
One of the top 50 albums in rock and roll history.
Free bird!
A friend asked me recently, what song would play at your funeral? Without a beat, I replied, Free Bird!
Holds up well. Some straight up blues. Interesting to read what perfectionists they were. Their demos sound just like the album versions
I usually hate twang of any kind but Lynyrd Skynyrd is different for some reason. Simple Man and Free Bird are absolute classics but Tuesday's Gone is underrated too. For being able to separate themselves from the rest of the twang I'll give this 4
One would have had to have never lived in the South and been reared far from it to call this the first "truly meaningful Southern rock" statement. Maybe look at an album released three years earlier called Idlewild South. Perhaps the editors mean that LS is more obviously Southern that the ABB, who go plenty deep with the blues and were actually bi-racial in their lineup. That said, this album is something special; one can hear the tightness of the band, all those hours in dive bars and juke joints – there's real polish and accomplishment. "Tuesday's Gone" is near symphonic in its power and every cut offers heft and substance. "Freebird" is so good to have stood up to all the abuse and overplaying. One has always loathed this band's politics and avoid its fans, though the talent is clear and undeniable.
The boomer inside me love it.
Southern rock is usually not my type of music, but I must admit Lynyrd Skynyrd give us a treat here by giving one of the best album of this genre. Tuesday's Gone is my favorite of them, Gimme Three Steps and Simple Man are great classic songs and Free Bird might be one of the most iconic rock song ever.
Brilliant. Simple Man one of the best songs I've heard in a while.
Great album
Had no idea this many hits were on the same album. After loving Skynyrd at first, I disliked this band for years for no good reason. These songs rock.
I wasn't aware that they did the Happy Gilmore song. That was a bonus. Big fan of Free Bird due to a drunken night trying to pass it on guitar hero too! Hadn't heard the rest, a lot of it was pretty good. Some to American for my liking.
It would not be my first choice as genre, but I recognise the musicianship
I loved this album, even the songs I've never heard weren't bad, just unfamiliar.
Do I like southern rock? I think I might. This album is freaking fantastic. Top to bottom, even if Free Bird is bloated as hell…what a song! And to me it isn’t even the best thing in this. Never really thought about Skynyrd outside their most famous track…now I’m a believer.
Not much to say, but a good album...interesting to hear freebird in context. Felt like it built up to it in a way that doesn't happen when heard on its own.
Ask me to name a Southern rock back, and the first name I'll come up with is Lynyrd Skynyrd. Ask me to name some Skynyrd songs, and I'll go with "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird," and "Gimme Three Steps." If pressed further, I'd add "Tuesday's Gone" and "Simple Man" to the list. The fact that four of those fives songs are on this album ("...Alabama" being the odd one out) tells you all you really need to know. If '70s rock from a band featuring approximately 8.3 guitarists sounds up your alley, then you're in luck. Get this album and rock the fuck out.
Big fan but somehow missed their first album altogether. Always assumed it wouldn’t be as good as Second Helping, which was the first Skynyrd lp I picked up, & which contained Sweet Home Alabama. But I did have one single featured here, the iconic Free Bird, perhaps their finest tune ever. Almost as good are Simple Man & Gimme Three Steps, and there’s no filler here. Al Kooper does a great production job. Not sure they ever sounded any better.
Great album containing 2 masterpieces. Tuesdays gone and simple man.
Pretty good bluesy rock.
Apart from the "hits", which is a southern hard rock sound, a lot of the record is more rootsy, folk stylings. I hadn't heard the deep tracks on the album before and I found it gives the band a little more depth than I've given them credit for. There are some outright classics on here (Freebird!, Gimme Three Steps), that Skynyrd are best known for, but overall, the record is solid and essential.
Awesome southern blues rock. The eight songs fly by and even the honkytonk country rock n roll of Things Goin On and Mississippi Kid are good rollicking fun. Obviously the big hits are Platinum-plated.
Some of their biggest hits are on this album, songs that I'm familiar with are, "Free Bird, Simple Man, and Tuesday's Gone" which are all classics. "Gimme Three Steps" has a lot of listens but it was an alright song. The other songs on the album are a solid 3 for me, but with the big hits, that elevates this album to a 4 overall.
This album was pretty darn good. It reminds me of Forrest Gump and I can’t be mad at that!
Roh-kee Hon-kee Ton-kee.
Classic rock all day
Such a great debut album. Fun start to finish. Not many Southern Rock albums can match this.
Feeeee biiiirdd yeeAahhh
Awesome album! I've never listened to anything besides Free Bird, but glad I made it through the whole thing. Tracks 1 and 3 were really good, and production on this (was it a remaster?) very clean and makes the album sound more contemporary than it really is
So after listening to Dylan yesterday, as soon as I saw this album, all I could think was Fuck yea!!! I like to think of Jesus like with giant eagle's wings, and singin' lead vocals for Lynyrd Skynyrd with like an angel band and I'm in the front row and I'm hammered drunk! Southern fried rock is the kind of music that just gets better and better the more you listen. This album is like a greatest hits album, not really a bad song. I'm sure most folk have heard Free Bird, Gimme 3 steps and Simple man, but the rest of the album equally good if not better. Die hard Skynyrd fans will want to kill me, but radio has just about killed Free Bird for me. Anyway, loved Tuesday's gone, I aint the one, Down South Jukin, Mississippi Kid and Poison Whiskey. Just a solid album all the way through. Load up some beers, eat a couple mushroom caps, throw in some Skynyrd and I promise a good night in store! Great album, thought about a 5, but couldn't pull the trigger.... 4.5
4.5 I was already a pretty big fan of the hits on this album, but I’d never heard much outside of those. I’m very happy with what I heard by the end. Classic southern rock and fuckin’ roll! It has a nostalgic sound that I think has aided it in aging as well as it has. Nice and moving pace that is mostly consistent outside of one or two tracks. I definitely like this enough to buy on vinyl if I find it.
8/10
These glorious southern rockers. Fucking spectacular bunch of songs. A blueprint for rock music right here y'all.
There's something gloriously sleazy about their music that elevates it above dreary blues revivalism. Maybe it's Van Zandts voice, maybe the three guitars always allowing one to add some slinking, driving rhythm to everything. I don't know, it just works. Also, it has Free Bird. So it was always going to be good.
A foaming crescendo of molten sex. The first time I listened to this record I was high on hallucinogens, flying like a panda in a hot air balloon, straddling the clouds and dancing in the stars. My mind had been opened to a new galaxy of noise, a glittering corkscrew of shimmering gold dust sprawled across a whirlwind of life. My mouth tasted like sawdust and my legs were glued to the floor, but this music spun my head off its shoulders and propelled me into the future. A future caught with its pants down, on the wrong side of town. A future so dark and twisted that it took on the form of an army of spiders leaking out of the skull of a lost relative. I would never be the same again.
FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRD
Not far off of a 5. Three really really good songs (Free Bird, Tuesday's Gone, and Simple Man), a couple of okay to good ones, and then Mississipi Kid and to a lesser extent Poison Whiskey towards the end which drags it down from a 5 to a 4. Won't listen to the album again, but will be picking out those three songs and listening to them over and over.
Okay this is pretty good
Big Skynyrd fan. I like all their albums. Great Southern rock.
Glorious album, Tuesday's gone - excellent, Free Bird - probably the most enjoyable long-form southern rock track in history. New layers each time you listen although missing real depth. Genuinely wonderful but with a few dull points here and there. I imagine it would be very good to drive to.
Good country/southern rock album fronted by two big songs. What keeps the album from 5 stars though is the fact that those two songs are by far the best ones of the album and the rest is not bad but also somewhat easy forgettable
If Southern rock is not your Texas BBQ and when the kings of southern rock turn up to haunt you from the grave - you brace yourself… but it’s actually a great record - is definitely up with there with the classic rock greats - and well try as you might - but finishing off a good record with Freebird is begrudgingly awesome.
This was awesome. Both glad I heard it through and excited to listen to again in the future!
In the early '90s I worked at a pool hall with a jukebox in the corner. That machine must've made a million dollars off of Sweet Home Alabama. I hate that song. At the beginning of week 2 I resorted to placing a piece of masking tape with a sign on the glass that read "Selection J2 is unavailable, DO NOT USE," That lasted two days and then I resorted to unplugging the entire machine. Pool halls without music are super boring tho. Eventually I quit and haven't listened to Lynyrd Skynyrd ... until today. I'm pleasantly surprised. Maybe it's the nostalgia. Maybe it's all the barbecue and cheap beers I've been consuming this morning. Or, maybe it's these dang overalls I can't seem to fit myself into while wearing a t-shirt. Whatever it is, these guys rock.
Lynyrd Skynyrd went to Robert E. Lee High School and Nathan B. Forrest High School in Jacksonville. They didn’t change the name of Forrest until 2014, and didn’t change Lee until 2021. While we could take issue with the Confederate flag-waving, heritage-touting nature of Skynyrd and their fandom, they are very much a product of their upbringing. However, they resisted other conservative traditions of their youth - continuing to wear their hair long despite it being culturally unacceptable. But this just introduces more contradictions and confusion. Willing to reject some norms, but not able to see that your schools are named after racists and traitors, or that your heritage is built around hate? Neil Young saw the 70s South for what it was, and I've gotta side with his "Alabama" over the Skynyrd response of "Sweet Home Alabama" (not on this album). But contradictions and complications aside, they were fantastic musicians. “Simple Man” is, simply, amazing. “Free Bird” is legendary, and I wouldn’t mind if that guitar solo went on forever. And “Tuesday’s Gone” and “Three Steps” are worthy hits as well. The stretch of “Things Goin’ On” through “Poison Whiskey” doesn’t reach the same mark, which ultimately holds the album back. In the end, it’s good that they told everyone how to pronounce their band’s name with this album title. If they were called Lie-nard Sky-nerd, they never would have been as popular. If you didn’t use a bunch of out-of-place y’s to spell your band’s gym teacher homage name, maybe people wouldn’t have trouble knowing how to pronounce it?
Pog? Pog!
Didn't expect to like it but it was awesome, free bird in particular. Also the production was sharp, and the tunes were well sequenced only thing holding it back is poor, repetitive lyrics on some tracks. A great record
It's too tempting to call this "generic", but this album has a knack at hitting the right tickle-spots. Making the familiar '70s country rock sound not an annoying but a cozy one. And they didn't stop there, there are also parts where the guitar-driven epicness caught me off guard. Perhaps that's the one that separates them from their peers.
I learned how pronounce now
Really good album: Best numbers: Free bird and Tuesday gone
Good
rate: 4 - classic rock staple - I related to Free Bird, and the instrumentals on it are swag - I don't know if I'd listen to the whole album again, but there are some great songs on it, some are a little long to my surprise - short album which I can appreciate - before listening, I knew Tuesday's Gone - Overall, I think this album has a lot of important themes and is pretty politically forward for the time - favorite song: Things Goin' On - this song speaks on important socioeconomic and environmental issues, basically says "fuck the government, they should be helping us, not sending people to the moon" also I like the guitar and percussion
This is fine OH SHIT FREEBIRD
Exquisite
Hell yeah brotha, this shit is gosh dang good! I was hankerin' for some good ol' rock 'n' roll! First Listen?: Y Fav. Tracks: Simple Man, Free Bird, I Ain't The One Rating: 3.8/5
Un clásico que siempre vi de reojo, grata sorpresa musical. Un album para escuchar moviendo la cabeza
Nearly every song is notable and the ones in the middle that were not were a pleasant listen. Front heavy with the hits and ends with Free bird.
Good if not unremarkable through most of it, finishes off very strongly with “Free Bird” which elevates it to great
Great album. I can see why it was so important.
Simple man, free bird, gimme 3 steps, and more Great album
Absolutely surprising how enjoyable the album is, but damn, cut down Free Bird and Tuesday's Gone please.
R r r r r reeeaaal rock shit
By some quirk fate ”Free Bird” was the least fulfilling song on this album
Bankare... går helt enkelt hårt
Classic Skynyrd
Boom! Spiky riff rock full of power chords and energy. Really enjoyed this one, particularly Simple Man (which I hadn't heard before) and Free Bird (which I had), the latter one of those rock epics that go on an on through seemingly so many phases. So close to giving this the full five stars, but some of the early tracks weren't quite as interesting. But still, definitely worth further listens.
I Ain't the One - 8/10 Tuesday's Gone - 8/10 Gimme Three Steps - 9/10 Simple Man - 9/10 Things Goin' On - 8/10 Mississippi Kid - 4/10 Poison Whiskey - 5/10 Free Bird - 10/10
