I expected to hate this, I’m not a hip hop fan. But, I only disliked it, so that’s something I suppose. But I’m barely 2/3 the way through, and not sure if I can make it through the whole thing. I tried pulling up the lyrics to see if that helped…. It didn’t. The Wikipedia article says they “set out to create the hip hop equivalent of Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get On”. I think I’ll pull up that classic to flush this one out of my brain. 1/5
I can't do this genre.
Another hiphop shit show.
So dated it’s bordering on unlistenable… this is the sort of thing that should never see the light of day outside of musical museums. I get it, it’s historically an important album but I would be surprised if this didn’t already sound pretty dated by 1992… maybe even before
An entire album of blaming others for their own broken culture: what a novel concept. Musically, there were no hooks to this. Lyrically....blah blah blah.
Entirely unrelatable
It's so heavily over-produced that it's really hard to listen to. The lyrics seem really good! At least when I can hear them. Unfortunately, it just kind of sounds like bad, over-produced hype music, though.
The first track was a live concert which reminded me of a time when people used coaches' whistles to make noise. The music is a mashup of mixed 90s music with rap, and lots of record scratches. It is interesting to hear how rap has evolved to its current form.
didn't listen. not into it.
I hate this
Not my favorite, but didn't mind it. Interesting to think back to when Flava Flav was more than a meme
1 a 2 sterren.
Too many artificial repetitive noises. Had to skip a few songs because of this. Did not enjoy this album.
Nty
Hip hop del duro-horrible.
Second album by Public Enemy on this list, and for the second time I think there has been a generational gap. Lyrics are as relevant as ever, which shows not much positive change has happened since late 80s in (american) society. If you would release the lyrics to the whole album as a poesy tome, then we have a bestseller on our hands (with exaggeration of course). When it comes to music, beats, tempo, flow or whatever else, unfortunately it doesn't hold that well. I had a real problem to keep my focus on the song, on the lyrics or anything else. Every time it felt dragged, unnecessary, and just simply tiring. I'm not saying that it is worse than modern hip-hop, which is not true, by the way, but from my perspective the music just has nothing in common with the message, and that makes it really hard to swallow in one sitting. I really tried, gave few chances to couple of the songs, but I just couldn't do it. I'm sorry, but Public Enemy is just not a group for me.
Didn’t age well. Bad samples. yyyyeeeeaaaaaa booooyyyyy gets old real quick
If beastie boys was bad
This is some hard core rap. A lot of anger that I cannot identify with.
The honour of being my first 1 - Congrats!
Rap isn't my thing.
Nope, I just don't like hip hop. Listened to about half of the first six songs and decided it's enough. For sure not the worst hip hop out there, but I still don't like it at all.
I’m disappointed. Never listened to this group but Chuck D is one of those hyped up figures so I assumed I’d hear something interesting. There was no variety throughout, just all the same tonally. Didn’t live for it, wasn’t impressed by it. Repetitive and dull.
Is it wrong to say that I find the usual big, loud "black attitude" just so tiresome? Today, arrogance and sassy loudness is celebrated, so long as it comes from a black person; people seem to think being "empowered" means being self-obsessed and obnoxious. Every song has this overblown, forced, pompous swagger that just gets irritating. Much hip hop suffers from this. It doesn't feel genuine, it really feels like the whole purpose of the music is to seem cool. I really think hip hop has to be the most pretentious genre out there. The definition of pretentious is: "attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed." Hip hop is all about style and attitude, not about substance or talent. By that I mean that it is usually not musically complex/deep to compose, nor does it take any technical skill with a musical instrument to perform. Sure, the lyrics take effort to write, but that's the only thing it has going for it. Since when was good music about lyrics? You might as well stick to poetry. After all, the music itself is often so simplistic; a 3 second beat is looped over and over for a whole 4 minute song. Wow, so impressive, guys. The music isn't even played by people, it's played by a machine. It doesn't take a musical genius to push buttons on a drum machine. Today a lot of hip hop is performed by computers; the only piece left for a person to do is rap. I'm sure someday soon computers will be able to convincingly rap, and all popular hip hop will be procedurally generated by AI. I love to listen to music that is written by skilled composers and/or performed by talented instrumentalists. Hip hop is the antithesis of this; simple repetitive music, no impressive instrumental work. Usually, anyway. I’m sure it’s enjoyable to many but I just don’t like it at all
Nope. F
I don't even hate rap but this just sucks, sorry. Horrible beats - seriously, what's up with the wacky boing instruments in every song? They're a kazoo away from being actual meme music. "Security of the First World" sounds like video game pause music. An hour of my life that I'll never get back.
I can't listen to music like this because there is no melody, just a beat. It's definitely interesting that this caught on, though.
Far too much yeaaaah boooy
1. Countdown til Armageddon - Completely an intro. I will never listen to this ever again. Pretty much a tornado warning the whole time. Rate - 1/10 2. Bring the Noise - Nothing special, won't be added to my playlist. Not bad, but eh. 5/10 3. Don't believe the Hype - Don't really like this one either. Pretty irritating noise heard throughout. Won't be added to my playlist. 5/10 4. Cold Lampin' with flavor 5. Terminator X To the Edge of Panic - What's with this rap group and GOD AWFUL screeching sounds? 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. yea boiiiiiiii, didn't like this album
Dogshit. sry, I did not have a good day lol
Would not recommend. Naaaaah boiiiiiii
YEEEEAAAAHHHH BOOOOIIIIIII BASS BASS BASS BASS
I don't get it. If you are going to pick 2 or 3 African albums for a list like this one, why would you go for the ones with the most Western influence, where the sophisticated intertwining rhythms characteristic of the best African music are blunted in favor of weak funk and jazz tropes and the distinctive sound palette of the various African countries is traded in for standard Western instrumentation, like a sub-Tower of Power horn section, and electric piano? That objection aside, there is nothing particularly wrong with Femi Kuti. It passes by painlessly enough. Femi Kuti is decent if unremarkable singer. The musicians are competent enough. But the music is a micron deep. There are no interesting rhythms to dig into. The horn section writing is unimaginative. Soloing is often a weak point in African music, and so it is here. Since the songs almost entirely of vamps, it's a whole lot of nothing. 2/5
I fuckin' hate it. Garbage.
Yeeeeeahhh boooiiiii not really into it.
I don’t like rap/hiphop, so I quit after 2 songs.
Bedeutungsloser Schrott.
