Reviews (page 11 of 13)

I dig it. I kick it. Pretty important stuff rap-wise. 3.5/5.

Can I kick it?

Not usually my cup of tea but I found it catchy and a nice listen.

This feels very much of its era, but it also resonates today. I enjoyed it a good deal. The songs tend to be a bit too long and overstay their welcome, but it's ultimately very good stuff.

It grew on me over time, and I definitely liked some of the beats.

I fugged with it. Wouldnt listen to that in a random mix but all together I was pimpin

Had a lot of nice samples and a couple alright songs. Just didnt really love the album as a whole

One of my brothers favourite albums so have to mark it down. Can appreciate the quality but I’ve just heard it too much.

This is very tight and technical. I'm digging the samples but the style of the delivery almost feels passive vs something like Liquid Swords. I find this a 7-7.5 and Liquid Swords a 9 but out of five stars it's rough. I didn't listen to them before but I can see how this is foundational.

I really just love how funny 80s and early 90s rap is. These guys are out here rapping things like "I don’t eat no ham n eggs cuz they’re high in cholesterol", and it's hilarious. I think this album was pretty influential and it does sound a good bit more modern than Run DMC's debut (which is only from like 6 years before this), but I found it to be a bit repetitive (a pretty laid back vibe overall) without a ton of standouts. Generally an enjoyable listen, but this early rap just all sounds a bit dated now. The vibe is consistently good throughout, so it's a fairly easy one to press play and listen to passively. The one real standout is definitely "Can I Kick It?" I'd heard this before of course, but I never paid that close attention I guess since I missed that it samples "Walk On The Wild Side". This is a really great song and it definitely elevates the album a bit, and this sample works great. Favorite song: Can I Kick It? Other: Footprints, I Left My Wallet in El Segundo, Mr. Muhammed, Ham ‘N’ Eggs 11/13/23

Decent and funky and original but I wouldn't be sticking it on replay

While I respect the historical milestone of a key alternative rap crew, I prefer the work of De La Soul and Digable Planets. Even then, some of the jazz-infused (i.e., heavy jazz sampling) sounds from all of these groups sound dated and of the early 90s.

Not something I was into back when it was released, and I'm not really digging it now. The lyrics are good, although the flow really dates it. The grooves are the best part with some interesting samples. I can see why this was an influential album to hip hop.

Fun and good, tiny bit much too corn and cheese

Influential album with some nice hooks.

Overall, People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm was okay, most of the rapping and instrumentals worked pretty well and the album as a whole felt pretty pleasant to listen to. It could get a bit tiring with it's length but I don't think that is too much of a major detractor from this album Best Song: After Hours Worst Song: Push It Along

Classic - 6.5

After the weekend, I actually can't remember too much about how I felt about this album. Didn't leave an overwhelmingly positive or negative impression

Super solid album from Tribe. It's hard to give it too high a rating because the two albums that follow this are just out of this world, some of the best hip-hop albums ever made, so this one is bound to look a little weak in comparison. The beats are pretty skeletal, but the sampling is fantastic and the flows make it easy to groove along to regardless. 'Can I Kick It?' is also one of the best hip-hop singles of all time. They really couldn't do wrong could they.

Solider old school hip Hop Klassiker

Good! Bonita Applebum was my favourite track.

Not good, not terrible. Has a few well known, but not as good as it could get as ATCQ

Underwhelming. I haven't listened to much of A Tribe Called Quest, but I am familiar with some of their stuff and was expecting more. It seemed like a lot of sounds put together without much cohesion. Three stars because Can I Kick It? actually kicks it

Classic 90s hip-hop. Bops include: Can I Kick It

Good listening to it once to know it exists. Earliest 90s Hip-Hop.

Neat to hear the original song sampled by The Fugees, an album earlier in the generator.

Highlights: Push It Along, Luck of Lucien, I Left My Wallet In El Segundo, Can I Kick It? Overall: 7/10

It's a hiphop classic, but it's 90s dated too. There are some decent tracks, but Ham and Eggs feels dated. On the fence; would rather listen to Wu.

Album had some interesting samples and creative sounds. The start and ending are strong, but the middle was a little boring.

There are so many cool samples on this album! Loved the "Bonita Applebum" sample as well as the Stevie Wonder "Hey duke". What didn't I like? The verses are not always great and I honestly found some of the flows annoying. Still I think this would be a 4 star if it was not for the length of the album. It really didn't need to be over 1 hour.

Good, but I like midnight maurader better

An interesting look into an entirely new culture that was born out of the 80's rap movement as it transitioned into a 90's R'N'B culture. Not something I adored but rhythmically pleasing, though a bit cheesy at times.

Nice atmosphere, upbeat, fun

Top notch production and flow. Excellent samples, although the samples sometimes got chaotic. Feels like I would have added another star if I were more into lyrics.

Nice chill album Good background vibes

This very much sounds like an album from 1990. That being said, it holds up pretty well, and I'm glad this was included on the list as I don't think I've heard any of these other than "Can I Kick It?" Solid album. I wish I could give it a 3.5.

Basic ysäriräppiä/hiphopia. Ihan kiinnostavat taustat.

A definite step up from some of the rap albums I've had so far. This has a variety of flows, some interesting lyrical concepts, and a couple of absolute classics in Can I Kick It and Bonita Applebum. Unfortunately, some of it just didn't seem to land, and I kept thinking of it as a great stepping stone to future stuff. Useful as a historical great, but not something I'll be going back to compared to, say Low End Theory. A high 3/ low 4

Bästa låt: Can i kick it

Not my favorite Tribe album.

a soulful of secrets

I can, in fact, kick this. One hour is still too long for a single album - especially from a genre that I'd never consider to be a favorite, but the steady grooviness and overall accessibility of this record leaves it with something that nearly anyone can enjoy. Including me.

i hadn’t realised i needed to explore more 90s hip hop until this album became one of many daily listens. at about the halfway point i’m loving it. saving it to my library in order to relisten when i am 🪨ed enough for it to be a whole new experience. i love a steady baseline (for the most part), clever lyrics if a simply subject, and a calmer vibe. not my top top genre i will admit but i’m enjoying it. bonita applebaum is perhaps my favourite, if can i kick it is a basic choice (it is). mr muhammad has come out of the woodwork as a late fav, the latter half of this album hits harder than the first half. glad this is the first of many suggestions!

Real 90s hip hop. Not my go-to but ATCQ is top tier in this genre. Best track: #7 - Bonita Applebum. (Woof, what a beat!)

While I was never a fan of this era of rap music or what I've dubbed "Fresh Prince Rap" (how many will I piss off with that generalization?). I understand these guys helped lay the foundation for many artists that would come along and in opinion do it better. The backing tracks (or samples) are probably the best part of the album however they're a product of a bygone age of hip hop that did nothing for me then and does even less for me now. Flow, wordplay, delivery and the hooks are all a little too simple and repetitive. To me it just doesn't hold up to modern music or even to music of the same genre that would proceed it by just a few years. It's a relic of it's time and best looked at as just that for those of us who were too young or just not around to appreciate it when it was fresh. Should have left the album in Segundo/10

Smooth. Runs a little long but lots of experimental samples/beats keep it interesting. Struggled to focus on work while listening, just kept being distracted by the music. Not all experiments work though. Would've been stronger if a couple of songs got cut. Rating is mostly a weakness of 1-5.

Yeah wae good at the time and can you kick it is a classic rest seems a bit dated and tired.

Great to be reminded of how good this album was, though it does sound a bit dated now

Solid, but a bit too long for me.

I enjoyed this album. I only remember hearing a couple of these songs before. I love all the quotes and musical references.

Less aggressive, inoffensive rap - like Arrested Development. The trouble is, it's rap, not music.

Not a defining album of it’s genre

Laid-back with some great samples (Walk on the wild side!) but not something I would replay.

This is a good album if a bit too chilled and laid back to really grab me; I want my hip hop to be a bit dirty and gritty and this, as good as the flows are, the beats just don't really take me anywhere. Still, 3.

This is much better than we've had over the past week or two, and a lot more thoughtful and reflective than the other rap/hip hop albums we've had from the early nineties. That said, what it gains in lyrical dexterity and subtlety it does lose a bit in energy and catchiness - there's not much that really sticks in your head musically aside from Can I Kick it?. Definitely liked this album, but am I actually likely to revisit it? Probably not, so it's a 3/5.

nice album I really like the sound and especially the vocals... they are very interesting compared to 2Pac... 3/5

i like how positive it is. i like the chill funk samples and rnb stuff. it just has those 80s rap vibes that feel so stilted and corny. i want to like this mooorrrreeee! but i cant. cornyyyy.

Bon album, du bon hip to the hop, un peu old school, belle découverte, good vibes.

The album was alright. It is very different than the hip hop/rap scene in the early 90s. It is not aggressive. It was a little long. I can't recall a specific song that was overly memorable but as a whole it was alright.

I do like their production, but the flows on this one felt a little samey tbh. Could use another listen probably, but for now it's is the not bad not great 3.0 zone.

Not a rap fan but as rap goes, this is pretty listenable

3.7 - I struggle with some of these early hip hop records because: a) my musical diet growing up consisted of mostly rock, b) as a genre, hip hop has evolved and many artists display tighter MC'ing and glossier production. On an intellectual level, I can appreciate how Tribe laid the foundation for almost everything that would follow. And compared to many contemporaries, I appreciate the light-heartedness of tracks like "Ham 'N' Eggs" (side note: "I Left My Wallet..." is corny AF). But I won't gush about this record as others do. At best, I'd say it has some bangers like "Footprints", "Bonita Applebum" and the classic "Can I Kick It?"

Head bobbing and breezy - it's ok

Some classics here but it began to sound samey. And some of the lyrical content is ridiculous.

I like this.

This one wasn’t too bad. Rap with a little jazz influence but with fairly sparse production with unique lyrics. This is not a hooky album though, in fact that may be the worse part. I didn’t mind the production though.

Again, another perfectly acceptable, ATQC album

Not by usual thing but I mostly enjoyed this. Some of it was based as hell 😂

high 3. didn't save much from this, but did enjoy it a lot more than the other tribe album I have heard in the past.

not my preferred style of hip hop but still good

I can understand the appeal for this album. I get the historical significance, but I am just not a big fan of the earlier rap

3/5 This album was pretty good. However, I found myself just wanting to listen to the songs that were being samples. I guess it had some good messages like Ham and Eggs, and yea I thought it was cute. They had good rhymes but I dunno if I will be going back to listen to it again.

Nothing amazing or terrible here, just some slightly cheesey rap music that played okay in the background. Ham and Eggs was my highlight.

A new genre for me but I really quite liked this. More of a vibe and very cool mood than something I could imagine myself returning to over and over but really enjoyable

A rap album that sounds modern and timeless, with great vocals and new-wave instrumentals.

Listening to this it's quite infectious in it's quirky upbeat feel. I like it.

Lässiges Album mit 1-2 Classics drauf, kannst nix sagen

There's something special about 90s hip hop, but most of the time they seem a little static when it comes to their cadences.

At 1 hour 16 minutes this album is too long. But still good

so smooth but not so many stand out tracks

Another good quest album

I didn't know what to expect and I have to admit I enjoyed it. It's not something I would listen to often, but it was refreshing and the sampling definitely brought a different element to the music. A fairly safe hip-hop/rap choice.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yes, lyrical and vocal work is genius with slow backing tracks to emphasise this in parts, very laid back and enjoyable Favourite song: Track 1 - Push It Along

on the intro and i'm already enjoying it very much mmmm hiphop sounds bonita applebum you gotta put me on dude can kick it

Could not make it through. Old style rapping. Making little to no sense. Music was good, if i could rate that by itself I'd give it at least 3 stars.

Starts of simple, unimpressive - but then weaves it's own mood/vibe as it goes. Found myself liking a lot of the less popular tracks that I was less familiar with.

Not my type of music, but better than I expected. My head was bobbing but that’s about as far as I’d go. High 2 low 3, probably wouldn’t go back to it. I’m too white for the message in the lyrics to speak to me.

I'm actually so pissed. I wrote down a whole rap and everything that mirrored the style of tribe in this album to give it a rating and roast mr. brodsky, but my computer shut off and now that artwork is lost to the annals of time and whatsapp. Yeah it's a 3.5 that I'm putting at a 3, I don't wanna offer any insight now I'm gonna go pout.

Appreciated it, didn't always love it because it was not concise enough (why is phife barely on this?) but it certainly made me realize how much Tribe clicked on The Low End Theory. Production was solid, if not spectacular, and the songs could be a little more detailed but I loved the enthusiasm and mood, so I never lost interest. A decent record.

Solid album, maybe not super my taste and instrumentals not really too out there

Voinko potkaista sitä? No kyllähän sä voit! Siinä olikin levyn paras anti vaikka ei mitään skeidaa silti ollu. Laitetaan universumille vittuillakseni kolmonen.

The beats are enjoyable and groovy. The lyrics felt kinda cringe.

Can I kick it is great

Nice feel good album

Not a massive hip hop fan but that was pretty damn good. The rapping, music and samples are so clean.

Pretty good, but don't think I'll listen to the complete album again

There are some genuinely cool tracks on here, and it wouldn't be a punishment to listen to the album again. Will I, though? Probably not.

Good album. I like the beats, the use of samples from various jazz recordings. Can I Kick it, (sampling Lou Reed's Take a Walk on the Wild Side) was probably the beat track on the album.

Pretty okay

4/14, 29%

Needs a re listen

Alright

I like this album. I had heard the band's name but that's all. I didn't even know the style of music they created. Very catchy and groovy stuff. Nicely done.

This is... fun enough? It has that early 90s rap swagger that I like, but "conscious" rap (these guys, Arrested Development, etc etc) just feels weak once you've already heard NWA and Ice-T. I just don't think "coolness" in music flows in the direction they wanted - the trend goes from nice to dank, not the other way around. And importantly, you can't do nice once you've already done dank. And people had already done dank. On some level I appreciate what they were trying to achieve here, but tbh it gives off the same kind of vibe as Christian rock or cringey educational tunes: well-meaning but ultimately... kinda lame. And I guess that's why this whole genre was long gone by 1995. 3/5.

I cant get passed how early learning center the rapping feels. Beats and backing is great, let down by basic poor rapping

I wanted to like this more, but I wasn't a fan of the heavy sampling. I'm not giving up on this band, though. I'll definitely give their other albums a listen. 3.5

I can appreciate this album but I’m pretty picky about hip hop.

It's good, but they can do better

A solid debut from an all time great hip hop group. They would come into their own more later on in their career, so I would argue this album is more for the heads than the average fan or first time listener. Still, some very good material on here and no real weakness, other than the absence of Busta Rhymes, who should really be considered an honorary member by this point. Odd to have this album included instead of \"Midnight Marauders\" or \"We've Got It From Here...\". I guess the author has a propensity for listing debut albums when possible, I can understand that. If either of the aforementioned albums were on the list though, that would have pushed my rating down to a 2, but as it stands, a 3 is a fair score for the groups 4th best work.

Another solid hip hop album. I like that they really have three distinct quality voices on the record, none of whom (ahem NWA) actually suck.

Decent album

Not my jam really, but it was ok.

I of course see the merit and hear the artistry but this is quite tiresome

08/25/2022 Nothing inherently wrong with this album, but it’s just not my style. I’m a southern rap girl through and through (notorious big being the only exception). Despite this, it’s easy to see the influence that this album had on shaping an entire sub genre of rap music and being a keystone in hip hop culture of the late 80s/early 90s. I’m sorry, but I’ll always hate Can I Kick It lmfaooooo — Today was…..rough. I’m so very tired and feeling extremely lonely and…lacking in support. I don’t feel like I have many people, if any, to talk to. I feel super alone in this journey right now. There’s been this intrusive thought in my mind that keeps telling me that everyone in that building doesn’t give af about any of the individual students, but instead sees us all as little walking money bags that they can post on their Instagram for clout. Ugh…I’m so conflicted. I have enjoyed my time at the school and have already learned a lot, but I come home every night and feel anxious as HELL. Been having trouble falling asleep. I think the whole falling out/weird end that I had w Dr. O’Rourke just completely shifted my perspective or student-professor relationships and what an individual student actually means to a department, or even larger, a university. Part of me wishes I could turn it all off and not care and just focus on my needs and what needs to get done, but sometimes I can’t help but think too much. I really hope the days get better

Best ok. Verrassend ook maar niet geheel mijn muzieksmaak. Wel het hele album met belangstelling beluisterd.

Very high 3. Not my thing but there's a couple bangers.

I respect that the style isn’t vulgar or obscene, rather focusing on social commentary, and this is an album I would recommend to an older generation not as open to hip hop due to its jazz style beats, but the sound and flow is just a bit too plain and lacks entertainment value, you quickly lose interest listening.

It was alright. Not a huge favorite. Honestly easy listening background music.

I'm not sure what came first - Tribe Called Quest's debut or Three Feet High and Rising. Either way, you can hear the crossover and shared ideas. Q-Tip's smooth delivery style achieves the almost impossible of making hip sound relaxing. Bonita Applebum is very addictive. Hip hop was in a much healthier state three decades ago.

Cet album contient tout de même l’excellente Can I Kick It?

Very good, but they won’t hit greatness until The Low End Theory.

Hip hop

Not my cup of tea.

Laid back old school hip hop, That’s got interesting lyrics here and there, and it is funky too. Not too bad, and not like the aggresive direction a lot of the genre has taken today.

Leuk plaatje!

a little hit and miss on each song for me. Overall it was enjoyable

Bit of a down tempo sound and a sense of humour. Lacking explicit lyrics.

Despite the rather long and pretentious title, this is a pretty good debut album by the Tribe. Back in the day, all these samples would have been cool. Bonita Applebaum and Kick it are highlights.

I know they are well-regarded but I found this to be a bit tedious.

not as good as the album that follows

Good stuff.

It's one of those really good debut albums where you can hear what on later albums will become amazing. But this one is just too disjointed.

I recognize the band's name, but I wasn't sure if I have heard much if anything from A Tribe Called Quest. There were rhythms to the vocals that sounded familiar. "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" was the only track that lyrically sounded familiar. For me, "Youthful Expression" is an example of the fun and groove that the band is pursuing on this album. I enjoyed listening to the album, but I don't think I'll remember enough to want to come back for more.

90s rap group

Classic Hip Hop LP - straightforward beats and great bars.

Pretty neat little record.

Album passed me by quite quickly so I guess it made nice background music with my ears really only tuning in for the big hits. Nice and chilled though

That’s funny.

Really good early 90's rap. Lots of things to love here. I do think it gets a bit repetitive with the flows sounding similar throughout, but that just comes with the territory. Also, the juxtaposition between a song like "Push It Along" and "Ham 'N' Eggs" is a bit jarring and doesn't help the album feel more cohesive. Favorite Tracks: "Push It Along", "Luck of Lucien", I Left My Wallet in El Segundo", Bonita Applebum", "Can I Kick It?",

Not a bad listen Highlight Tracks: 5, 8, 12

playful, packed with uplifting samples, searching for the joy

I’m more familiar with Low End Theory. That album better than this on first listen.

An okay listen. No recognized songs

I’m surprised I listened to this album all the way through given that it’s Christmas Eve and I wasn’t in the mood for alt hip hop. Regardless, it wasn’t my favorite thing but it was objectively pretty good. I liked that they sampled sir duke and the beat on can I kick it was good. Ham n eggs was a goofy song. Fav: can I kick it

Not for me, but I'm sure if you like hip-hop it's great

Obviously they are having a lot of fun here. Love the vibe, just not digging it today I guess. Maybe don't take my word for it, I just gave a top-10 album here a 4 soooooo......

Started strong for me but wasn't sustained.

Not bad, couple of classics, not really my kind of thing

Groovy grooves. Nice to hear, but I won't be here again.

Good hiphop album with lots of samples

Quite liked this. Good range of samples and no weird skits.

nice instrumental not my style of rap, but i can tell it is a good album

Interesting but not really my thing

Two top tracks, very talented quality hip hop throughout but fairly boring.

Good album

Great beats, amazing lyrics, and lots of interesting sampling from artists I love.

A party, a fun party with the most friendly, charming erudite host you've ever met.

Nice hip hop, chill, good rhythm.

It was ok Wouldn't listen to it again though Ham n eggs is good too though And Can I Kick It? Awesome

Quite pleasing rap from the early 90's. I like that it is with instruments, however I'm not a rap-R'n'B fan.

First Listen. Reminds me of De La Soul's Three Feet High and Rising... Love it. I'm giving this a 3/5 (which for me on first listen) is very high.

Wonky album title aside, ATCQ's debut is enough to leave me contempt. I have only really listened to their 3 most popular albums, and based off a few songs ive heard from this album i'd kinda put it off til now. I mean, there are some just great songs on here. "Can I Kick It?" or "Push It Along" to name a couple. I think for a debut it's solid, considering they followed up right after with TLET & Midnight Marauders. The production feels very 80s-ish when compared to their later work, especially with that repeating outro sample (which kind of reminds me of the chants repeates in We Got It From Here..." Overall a solid project but its nothing compared to Midnight Marauders. 7/10 As Of July 14th, 2021 Best Tracks: Push It Along, Luck of Lucien, I Left My Wallet In El Segundo, Pubic Enemy, Bonita Applebum, Can I Kick It?, Go Ahead In The Rain Worst Track: Ham 'n' Eggs

This should be fun - the only track I know is 'can i kick it', on a quick glance. Aagh - i've been listening to a messed-up version on youtube. push it along: classic sound. Luck of Lucien - silly rhymes. After hours: quite like it, but don't love it. Footprints: alright i left my wallet in el segundo - mexican thingy - 'what a man'. public enemy - not as nice. bonita applebaum- prety weird. youthful expression rhythm (devoted to the art of moving butts) Mr Muhammed Ham and Eggs - just silly. (about being veggie?) Go ahead in the rain Description of a fool They are obviously having fun. can i kick it: fun! Not at all polite. Quite silly. 3 stars - none of the tracks are as good as the familiar one.

not the best rap album there is lol

Even for a 1990 album I thought the rap was very basic, a bit silly, and in some cases very predictable. Like when a show like "saved by the bell" did a rap episode. Not terrible though. But the music was spot on.

Fun and chill album. Need to relisten

Based on the title of the album, I was expecting something a little heavier and a little deeper than what I got. What I got was sort of a throwback to when hip hop was just guys having fun, making words rhyme and not really bothering with anything deeper than that. Which is also fun, but at some point kind of makes me ask why I'm listening. These guys are a lot of fun to listen to, but I never got past this question.

Beatovi su sve do jednog jebeni vibe.

Pleasantly surprised, like the more funky beats. Feels a little all over place but has some solid ideas. Bonita applebum to kick it is great

Nota 5/10 08/01/2025

Original hip hop. Laid back.

Very nice. Chilled out. Very influential, very funky. Will need to listen again. 3.5.

Good album for their debut. Later albums achieved more. Great samples

Smooth jazz and clean rhymes. Nice listen but can't Imagine seeking it out do listen to it again. Also, Delux edition 😑

Didn't like this quite as much as I thought I would, think award tour is my favorite from them. Still a very enjoyable and influential rap album. think Footprints samples Sir Duke??? Saved: Footprints, Can I Kick It?

Good stuff. I liked it.

Not bad.

Yeah not bad

Hypnotic, jazzy and understated...or boring, longwinded and energy-sapping? I honestly couldn't tell you, and it might be all these things and more. Sometimes the music sounds a little flimsy, but the rhymes are, on occasion, fabulous. So why are they often delivered in a monotone? A frustrating experience.

push it along/luck of lucien are a great 1-2 combo. its very much lyricist as a story teller and the poetry is nice. Pubic Enemy I could do without

I can get the importance of this album, but it's not so good to me. Just ok!

I am not really into rap or hip-hop, but the album was quite good.

I was disappointed with this one, I was expecting quite a bit more about from a band that I enjoyed the first album of so much

Significantly better than the average rap album.

I hadn't heard of this band yet I recognised some of the songs. Enjoyed most of it!

Fantastic beats. 6/10

Tribe is really good, just not my jam

Me likey.

Not sure how I feel about it, so it gets a 3.

2nd Tribe Called Quest album from the generator. Just like with the other one, the beats are great but the rapping itself wasn't very interesting. Overall an ok album, just not for me 2/5

I don't like rap

This was a drudge for me. Pros here are some cool samplings. Cons are some of the lamest lyrics and weakest flow you will hear from a rap album in a while. Way too lengthy of an album for so little on offer — and what little is there to offer is stuff from other, *better artist's songs.* I made it a point to look at the good reviews after listening to see what people liked, and a good portion of them make this point about how it's a "repudiation of the toxic culture that surrounded the genre," or something like that. And sure, that is nice and all, but you also need your counterculture product to be *good.* I think of all the Christian rock bands that disavow the hedonism and amoral behavior that they perceive as being rife in rock and roll, but utterly failing to make good music in their effort to change the direction of the genre. Looking at how rap and hip hop proceeded from the 90s and on, I think that's a good comparison. ATCQ didn't provide a good enough alternative. Keeping this at a 2 instead of a 1, since there were moments that were pleasant. These guys definitely have talent, but it's being deployed really poorly here. As a whole, totally forgettable and a mostly lame display of early rap.

Meh. Sounds almost like someone is telling me a story

I'm on track 12, nothing against hip-hop but I just can't keep listening to this album. Some tracks are good but nothing that i'd play by choice. If the music is playing that's fine but i wouldn't pick it on my own to play. I'll just listen to to track 12 because it's called Ham ´n Eggs and then I'm quitting.

I really struggle with the rap albums from this era. There’s nothing wrong with them but the production is so simple and minimalist with samples and very little variation, all the focus is on the lyrical craft which doesn’t really grab me as a white Australian male.

Wasn't for me

Early rap is super formulaic with its raps and rhymes and on the beat verses. Honestly not my jam.

Started at a 4 for me, fell to a 2. I like the beats, but every song has the same flow and it just drags on a bit for me with an underwhelming ending.

I went to the hat store today and bought myself a hat.

It's just so much the same

Q-Tip? More like Poo-Tip.

Tämä tyyli ei vaan uppoa.

And yet another hip hop album that I did not care for. I just couldn't get into it. The best parts were the samples taken from better songs. Favorite Track - Can I Kick It? Least Favorite Track - Push it Along ⭐️⭐️

A man loved this so much that the only course of action was to change his name to Questlove

Going to have to make comparisons here with Jungle Brothers and De La Soul, who have both already come up for me on this list and both pre-date this album. Simply put, this album just didn't do as much for me; I liked the fact that it's more straight music (especially compared to De La Soul), but the beats are just way too repetitive and simple for me. There's a few record scratches, but largely it's just a drum track. Found the lyrics a bit abstract in places, so compared the message Jungle Brother's album conveyed, this felt a bit empty. Definitely had a few "oh that's where this came from" moments, but overall none of this album has stuck with me. Listenable as background, but not something I'd put any attention towards in future.

Quite laid back, but still not something I would listen to again

This just isn’t for me. There were a couple songs I liked, but on the whole it just felt dated.

There should be a 27$ fine every time someone samples a crying baby in a song

Too repetitive

Not my cup of tea.

Not to my tastes.

I can tell this album is from the early 90's, maybe can be a great album for a lot of people, if you love this style of rap, but it's not for me at all, still can apreciate a good album

A couple of decent songs but overall just not for me. I do enjoy some rap and hip hop but couldn't really get into this much.

Neh coole beats maar niet leuk

Probably not my jam but I can totally understand why this is a good album to a lot of people

Well made album, but just not my taste

Not what I thought it would be, but not as bad as I thought it would be. It's ok.

Not for me

Mäßiger HipHop der beginnenden 90er. Kaum gute Momente.

Just another album I have no interest in. 2 stars or D.

There's some seriously good be

Not my style of music at all I’m afraid.

I got the call back to De La Soul. I got the call out of Public Enemy. I clocked that bit that the Fugees would later reuse. All pop music is in conversation with pop music and hip hop especially so. That's fine. But don't do that to Sir Duke. The sad truncation of that great horn part is miserable and nothing in Q Tip's generally sunny attitude can save the record from that. Shame, as it snatches, it's all a lot of fun. Just not a full record's worth of fun. 2 This is the third album we have heard from Q-Tip, a commendable character who don’t gotta cuss in his raps to sell records. Though this by itself is no particular recommendation there are many things to approve on this album as on his others, should we choose, as he has, to be positive. There is a constant playfulness about the handling of samples and rhymes that amuses and even impresses. Overwhelmingly I got a sense of the innocence of the school playground - play because of the goofy chants (Bonita Applebum, Can I Kick It?, Ham ‘n’ Eggs), school because someone taught these young people the value of enjambment. It’s sort of charming. What it isn’t is enough to sustain over an hour of a listener’s attention, even with the thrill of recognition (rare for me with hip-hop albums) across at least half a dozen samples. 1.5/5

Boring

Ok. Repetitive

Oh no not yet another rap/hip hop or whatever its called. However...I thought this was a parody it was so silly. High blood pressure and having to watch cholesterol. If it wasnt a parody it was laughably bad, if it was it sort of missed. Either way wasnt good but I did keep it on which is unusual for me with rap.

Not my thing.

Zuhause, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Ziemlich langweilig.

uh.. nah. another 90s rap vibe

Meh. Not into rap music

2 simgeras movusmine marto da ar momewona

It's ok. I didn't inspire me, and even on the tracks I enjoyed, I'd rather be listening to "Walk on the Wild Side" than "Can I Kick It?"

Better than expected. Can I kick it was fun. Still nothing very remarkable

Nice to have some genre change on this list, I'm not really a hip hop fan, this album was a bit uninspiring for me

не мое

Not for, just didn't like it.

Not really my cup of tea, but the vibes were great. You could tell what fun these guys had while making this back then. Wish I liked this much more:/

Kinda repetitive and boring

Can see why people like it, just not for me.

This was chill, though my brain can’t focus on the lyrics because the repetitive nature of the music makes it kind of dull.

Next time

There wasn’t anything particularly bad about this album, but for me it was a bit unremarkable. Way too long and a bit boring (monotonous?), I’m not even a fan of “can I kick it?” to be honest. Production was nice and obviously used a lot of cool samples.

This is not my particular style of music. I like the production, but will likely not re-listen. The first song is toooo long.

Only ok, wouldve liked more energy/ old school but ready for something new

Good flow , instrumentals are smart and well layered but felt it was lacking some melody

The most "product of its time" album I've heard so far.

One of the most boring things I've ever heard

First hip-hop album. I expect most of these to not rank all that high for me. Just not my bag. That said, I did have a few other Tribe albums back in the day though I never listened to them all that much. Can I kick It: dig that velvet underground sample. Youthful Expression: dig the keys I think I remember a Beatles sample early on too. I won’t ever come back to this album but can recognize some of the cool sampling talent and backbeats.

Not for me

not a big fan but it grew on me as I listened

5/10 Decent lyrics, good vibes, but the music is just so repetitive. I can see why people like this, but I didn't enjoy listening.

I like the instrumentals more than the delivery. It was ok.

Not bad, just sort of slow poppy rap

this didn’t do much for me i thought it was repetitive and it felt like a whole lot longer than an hour

Sounds a bit dated. Ok album.

Not a fan. A lot of hype surrounds this group and I have tried to listen many times but I do not get the vibe. Good musicians but nothing that moves me.

i thought it was gonna be fire🥀

A good hip-hop album, I quite enjoy ones with a more 'musical' approach 2/5

Nešto sam mislila da će me oni konačno preobratiti u ljubitelja hip hopa jer sam previše dobrog čula ali me ovo smorilo kao malo šta dosad.

Know some of these songs!

Alright. I knew that one song.

Not my thing but I found it pretty monotonous. And it’s too long.

Not really my thing but not terrible

Not a big fan of rap music. Even though the album isn't that bad, just not for me.

Didn't really land for me. Couldn't quite have it on in the background either. A little bit too relaxed, I think they took the lighter subject matter to the extreme. Can I Kick It? is decent, but one decent song does not a good album make.
