I can appreciate this album but I’m pretty picky about hip hop.

Good stuff

Based on this album's technical and artistic achievements, it is hard to imagine that it is a debut album. But that can be explained by the experience and talent of the artists that put it together. The album is a mosaic, not a melting pot, of musical styles that come together to form a colorful, vibrant picture. A Tribe Called Quest elevated all hip-hop by dropping sounds with so much weight that it is not hard to understand why so much of the alternative hip-hop scene orbits around them.

Absolute masterclass of hip-hop delivery and production. The beats are minimal yet demand toe-tapping, allowing the delivery to take center stage while propelling each track along an undeniable groove. The bars themselves are the perfect mix of tongue-in-cheek, witty, and drop-dead serious that allow the words to flow right on top of the mix while packing a serious thematical punch. Overall, this LP is a great reminder of what focused, uncluttered hip-hop can be

J'ai rarement pour habitude de m'extasier sur les silexes et autres outils rudimentaires de nos amis du paléolithique lorsque je me rends dans des musées dédiés à ces idioties. J'ai davantage d'admiration pour ceux de ma génération, comme par exemple le casque de réalité virtuelle ou encore l'iPad Pro 12,9. De la même façon, l'âge-de-pierre-rap proposé par A Tribe Called Quest me donne à chaque fois l'envie d'un immédiat retour vers le futur pour m'écouter un bon album de rap actuel.

J'ai lancé cet album à 14h et l'ai terminé aux alentours de 17h30.

3rd best hip hop debut behind Illmatic and College Dropout.

A solid debut from an all time great hip hop group. They would come into their own more later on in their career, so I would argue this album is more for the heads than the average fan or first time listener. Still, some very good material on here and no real weakness, other than the absence of Busta Rhymes, who should really be considered an honorary member by this point. Odd to have this album included instead of \"Midnight Marauders\" or \"We've Got It From Here...\". I guess the author has a propensity for listing debut albums when possible, I can understand that. If either of the aforementioned albums were on the list though, that would have pushed my rating down to a 2, but as it stands, a 3 is a fair score for the groups 4th best work.

Another solid hip hop album. I like that they really have three distinct quality voices on the record, none of whom (ahem NWA) actually suck.

Some classic songs on this one mixed in with some I really enjoyed but had never heard. A very fun listen

08/25/2022 Nothing inherently wrong with this album, but it’s just not my style. I’m a southern rap girl through and through (notorious big being the only exception). Despite this, it’s easy to see the influence that this album had on shaping an entire sub genre of rap music and being a keystone in hip hop culture of the late 80s/early 90s. I’m sorry, but I’ll always hate Can I Kick It lmfaooooo — Today was…..rough. I’m so very tired and feeling extremely lonely and…lacking in support. I don’t feel like I have many people, if any, to talk to. I feel super alone in this journey right now. There’s been this intrusive thought in my mind that keeps telling me that everyone in that building doesn’t give af about any of the individual students, but instead sees us all as little walking money bags that they can post on their Instagram for clout. Ugh…I’m so conflicted. I have enjoyed my time at the school and have already learned a lot, but I come home every night and feel anxious as HELL. Been having trouble falling asleep. I think the whole falling out/weird end that I had w Dr. O’Rourke just completely shifted my perspective or student-professor relationships and what an individual student actually means to a department, or even larger, a university. Part of me wishes I could turn it all off and not care and just focus on my needs and what needs to get done, but sometimes I can’t help but think too much. I really hope the days get better

ATCQ straight up bring the funk, the joy, the boom, the bip (the boom, bip) and some sweet jazz samples to hip hop. The interplay between Q-Tip and Phife Dog (RIP) is always a joy to hear. A four star album only because Midnight Marauders and The Low End Theory would get five.

trying to figure out who my favorite old-school hip-hop group is hearing A Tribe Called Quest’s first three album has made me think it’s probably these guys this album (along with the other two I listened to) is easily a 10/10 fuckin amazing

This gentler, funky jazzy hip hop is always a pleasure to hear (as opposed to testing aggressive gangster rap). Well done Tribe, Jungle Brothers, De La Soul. This one has Can I Kick It and Left My Wallet In El Segundo. It samples Stevie and Curtis and other cool cuts. 3.5 out of 5

I've written about how I'm not a rap guy on previous rap albums, but this is one of the few rap albums that I'd listened to a few times before this. I read that one of the members mentioned how at the time rappers were supposed to appear tough and how this album wasn't. I think that works a lot in its favour as it ages a lot better than that tough-guy rapper image which to me is very dated and part of my issue with a lot of the rap albums I've encountered on this list so far.

really enjoyed this, it’s VERY good for a debut album! lots of nostalgia vibes too.

I respect that the style isn’t vulgar or obscene, rather focusing on social commentary, and this is an album I would recommend to an older generation not as open to hip hop due to its jazz style beats, but the sound and flow is just a bit too plain and lacks entertainment value, you quickly lose interest listening.

Objectively not a bad album but just wasn't for me. The combination of funky, repetitive beats and the very casual and sometimes very basic lyrics and all that for an hour only aggregated me

Top 3 Tribe albums for me. Smooth, witty, and funky. This was a big tile in the groundwork of jazz samples in hip hop and gave whole new flavor to the sound. Lyrically intelligent and great storytelling. 4/5 stars.

Just read that atcq didn't get any money from Can I Kick It? because Lou Reed said they could use his sample but only if he got all the money from the song lol. This album is so good. Such a vibe. I mostly know Tribe from the anthology, but this might as well be a greatest hits. Plus the flow from start to finish and the lil sample interludes added to the feel of it being an album not just songs. RIP Joe C.

It’s got can I kick it on and some other classic tracks like I left me wallet in El Segundo and others, this a vibrant exciting tribe still trying to find their groove and sound. Still a must listen alternative rap album 👍

Fantastic album from a period of great albums from them as well as De La Soul and Arrested Development. Intelligent, positive and fantastic music too. So many great tracks on here - Bonita Applebum, Left My Wallet in El Segundo, After Hours, Can I Kick It of course. Highly recommended

It was alright. Not a huge favorite. Honestly easy listening background music.

So far every song is good to listen to. The beat production is good. I forgot Q-tip is part of the group. He has good rhymes. I’m hoping the rest of the album is just as good.

Didn't really vibe with it, maybe a little too experimental for my taste. DNF

And for my first hip hop album since making removing the genre filter… The album opens with push it along and my god the sample work at the start is good! I’am I’am surprised by how great this is as an opener Q-tip is essentially introducing himself as an artist with the sharp inelegant lyrics that fill throughout the song.He introduces the others with this wired echoey chat with his group, nice interlude bit. Well luck of lucien does start with part of all you need is love by the Beatles which heightens the song a bit making it sound of a higher level and there’s some jazzy bit too throughout that gives it a much needed personality. This song is more energetic then the last song the beats are better, the rapping is very on point and the samples used are great! Ooh, my first turn table noises came in after hours. The song is good as unlike the last two songs the beat is backed up by other noises ( by what partly sounds like synth and then it goes into drums). The Frogs are wired though. I’am not great with my hip hop knowledge but these guys seem like the masters of the samples making an otherwise okay song into a masterpiece ( oh yeah that’s footprints for you). I left my wallet at el Segundo actually had some guitar parts in the samples which works well! The lyrics tell the story of loosing a wallet ( of course at el Segundo) in a surprisingly lyrically sharp way. Love the angry Spanish/ Mexican men sample at the end. I really don’t like the shaky beat in Pubic enemy but the lyrics are somewhat good especially for the subject involved. I love the samples in Bonita Applebum as they aren’t overused unlike some of the others. The lyrics are okay not they’re sharpest but at least the chorus is kinda catchy. The album slows for it’s best song and biggest hit can I kick it, the it’s probably got the best sample beat of the album and some of the best strongest rapping. A good thing to note though are how cool the turntable spins are in headphones. Anyway good song! Youthful expression also has a decent groove to it and probably my favourite line so far with “ politicians are magicians make your vote they hope you’re wishin” yeah this is the best lyrical track for me in general! Then we have rhythm ( devoted to the art of moving butts) the verses are good but wait are those sex noises before the chorus; also the chorus is weird because it’s proper whispery, not a favourite but good try. Mr. Muhammad is probably the the most “rhythmic” sample filled song of the whole album, it’s a track without personality but I wouldn’t miss it if it wasn’t on the album. Ham n eggs is actually quite interesting for it’s time as it’s a pro vegan song ( so something not common in the late 80’s/ early 90’s times it was written and released in. It’s done in a very of it’s time goofy way but I like it. And the rhythm keeps the same sorta energy of Mr Muhammad. The album’s penultimate track is the rather groovy go ahead in the rain straight up solid beat but it’s one of the worst songs on this album. That last song does flow perfectly into description of a fool though it’s a great closer sharp lyrics, good beat, great rapping. Making most of the song instrumental was a good way to kill of the album slowly, but yeah a banger to end a banger of an album. Well this was a great (yet slightly over bloated) album (even though like 70% of rap albums are over bloated) will definitely revisit!

Not terrible, but not very memorable. Not a genre I enjoy massively, so I don’t expect I’ll listen to this one again.

A fantastic album from a fantastic era in hip hop. Has a great flow throughout and hearing Tribe always lifts my mood. As does Q-Tips distinctive voice. It did feel a bit long towards the end, but better too much than not enough. A classic.

I'm not sure what came first - Tribe Called Quest's debut or Three Feet High and Rising. Either way, you can hear the crossover and shared ideas. Q-Tip's smooth delivery style achieves the almost impossible of making hip sound relaxing. Bonita Applebum is very addictive. Hip hop was in a much healthier state three decades ago.

Oh boy. It's been a while since I listened to this. Back when I first got into hip-hop, I really loved early De La Soul, probably at the expense of some of their peers (though I did have a copy of this album). In retrospect, this hangs together as an album way better than the first few De La records. As much as I admire Prince Paul, all the fucking skits and interludes are irritating. "People's Instinctive Travels" has such a great vibe. It's positive but effortlessly cool as well. The production is peak early 1990s hip-hop. The lyrics and the vocal delivery are instantly recognisable. I love how they describe the life of NYC young people hanging out, but they make it almost into a nomadic mythology. I'm not a huge fan of the intros/interludes, and "Pubic Enemy" gets pretty old. Otherwise, almost perfect. 4.5*

A masterpiece and right up my hip-hop alley, with chill beats and fun samples, easy rhymes and flows and great production. Sounds just as fun today as did 30 years ago.

A crazily strong debut and from such a young group. This kind of hip hop is so established now but back in the late 80s it was represented by a tiny number of acts, and well against the mainstream grain of the times. Although not all the tracks live up to the standard of the greatest ones, it’s a full and coherent album - slightly ostentatious extra long title and all.

An incredibly important album from the Jazz rap pioneers. I don't enjoy this one quite as much as their two following records, but there are some fantastic songs on here and it's a remarkably solid and confident debut

Easy going, great samples, a pure pleasure

Q-Tip has one of my favorite voices in the genre. His raps are light and fun, smooth and groovy. Topics are diverse: there's a lot of funny stories to imagine and keep engaged. Production is tight, although there are rough edges and transitions that will be fixed in later albums. It's certainly innovative, combining hip hop with jazz and afrobeat better than anyone else in history. Samples do repeat a bit too long at times but there are dramatic changes that grab your attention. I would prefer less famous samples. Everyone knows "Sir Duke" and "Walk on the Wild Side" and it's a bit distracting. That being said, I do like most of the samples, the breaks are clean and it's a chiller vibe than other hip hop albums I'm used to; I wish more albums like this existed. Album could be significantly shorter, with relatively few tracks that stick out, especially on the second half, but they're all solid.

Laid back old school hip hop, That’s got interesting lyrics here and there, and it is funky too. Not too bad, and not like the aggresive direction a lot of the genre has taken today.

Love these guys. Pretty much my favorite hip hop. Jazzy and well written.

é inacreditável que eu tenha ignorado o A Tribe Called Quest por tanto tempo. encontrei tudo tudo do que eu mais gosto no hip-hop: flow, bons samples, composições bem trabalhadas e muito ritmo. é realmente difícil ouvir parado. ouvi muito de digable planets e wu-tang clan, dois artistas que eu adoro nele, além, claro de de la soul, que eu já ouvi, sei que tem relações com ATCQ, mas também meio que ignorei até hoje. agora quero entender esse fluxo de influência mais a fundo e ouvir toda a discografia do grupo.

This album was a lot of fun to listen to! The lyrics are witty and I didn’t pick up on anything terribly exploitative or offensive. Enjoyed it the first time but really found it great the second time. Great fun!

I know Tribe has their detractors. "They don't come hard enough." "They're trying too hard." "They're too silly." "They're too serious." It's exhausting to hear people whinge on and on about 'em. The truth is this album is just so chill and fun it's hard to hate on it unless you're really trying. If you're too hard for Tribe, it's time to rethink your life choices and calm the hell down. Because this album is just fantastic. It's all boom-bap tracks and laid back raps and the whole thing just slaps. It's impossible to stay still during tracks like "Can I Kick It?" The head nods are compulsory. Easy 5-stars. Easy.

Very cool start, but I'm worried that 70 minutes will be too long. Sadly, it's like a lot of hip-hop. Interesting start, then they repeat a beat while talking. Choruses can be good, but it's so repetitive.

A great easy listening hip hop album

It says something about an album's quality when a song is repeated three times and I do not mind it at all. People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is a great representative of it's genre, I was positively suprised by it's beats, lirycs, messeging, all of it. A decisively pleasant listening experience and one I will be revisiting in the future for sure. Highlights: Description of a Fool, Can I Kick It?

A surprising discovery for me. I really liked the vibe coming from this record. It can be enjoyed either absent-mindedly while doing other tasks or by actively focusing on the music. Didn't focus much on the lyrics, but it didn't affect my reception. Bits are well thought out and help solidify the pleasurable experience. Highlight: Can I Kick It?

Nie wiem, hip-hop. Wszystko się zaczyna jakims fajnym samplem (poza darciem mordy dziecka i żabami), niektóre z nich nawet rockowe czy jazzowe, co zaskakujące i... zmienia w to samo po parunastu sekundach, ewentualnie wraca na chwilę co jakiś czas. Teksty z perspektywy czasu niczym nie zaskakują, chociaż mogły być w tamtych czasach uznane za zabawne czy nietypowe - brakuje mi podłoża kulturowego do oceny. Jednoczesnie mam świadomość, że dla wielu artystów i krytyków jest to bardzo wpływowy album i widzę, dlaczego mogłoby tak być, chociaż mnie to przerasta.

To jest to czego oczekuję od sampli, nie tylko sama baza, ale całe piosenki. Wzorowana muzyka na jazzie z dodatkowym twistem. Jak zwykle lirycznie czarny rap z lat 90 ciężko odnieść do naszej polskiej rzeczywistości, ale przyjemnie się tego słuchało. Mocne 4/5

A masterpiece on multiple levels –  beats and samples, the rhymes and flows, plus world-class production. Plus, a ton of fun to listen to. Humor underrated in every genre of pop music and Tip et al make it look/sound so easy. Loved it 30+ years ago (Christ, can it be that long!?!?!) and it sounds just as good today.

Vibed to this while studying for my driver's permit test. It slaps. I got distracted by it though a lot because it changed up a lot. 83/100 Yeye

A delectable squirt of early 90s hip hop that is really easy to listen to. Can I Kick It? an obvious stand out track, but all pretty good

the constituent parts are fun but the album itself is dull as hell. sounds like it was more fun to make than to listen to. De La Soul did it much better

This is one of my favorites yet. So fun, witty and fresh as fuck.

2 tracks in and I know I'm giving this a 5 star rating. Golden era of hip hop right here. I listened to Black Sheep in the early 90s but didn't know about all the other Native Tongue groups until several years later. The downside of amazing music coming out when you're still in middle school living in a small town.

It had some good rhythms and beats, but it is certainly not my style of music. I think the track 'Bonita Applebum' maybe my least favourite song I've heard in a while. Especially the remix with some unfun groans in there at the end.

Best Song: Can I Kick It? There's a reason this song is so popular. The laidback, slow-drip lyrical flow is about as good here as it is on the rest of the album, but the backing instrumentals here stand above. Worst Song: Mr. Muhammad. The beat is most obtrusive on this track, getting in the way of the flow. Sounds almost Beastie Boys-ish (in a bad way). Overall: Groove personified. This album isn't right for all situations but it's perfect for some. Phife and Q-Tip are on their game for the whole album. The beats are solid, predictable head-nodders, which provide the best canvas for the vocals layered over top.

Can't stand the old school rap sound. The instrumentals become boring very fast. The voice sounds unoriginal. Hard listen.

It's one of those really good debut albums where you can hear what on later albums will become amazing. But this one is just too disjointed.

I recognize the band's name, but I wasn't sure if I have heard much if anything from A Tribe Called Quest. There were rhythms to the vocals that sounded familiar. "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" was the only track that lyrically sounded familiar. For me, "Youthful Expression" is an example of the fun and groove that the band is pursuing on this album. I enjoyed listening to the album, but I don't think I'll remember enough to want to come back for more.

90s rap group

Classic Hip Hop LP - straightforward beats and great bars.

Listening to hip-hop albums that were part of the golden age of sampling is such an interesting experience. Hearing snippets from extremely famous songs melded into the idiosyncratic rap style of QTip is cool; this album could only have been made in this era. I really enjoy Tribe, but I sort of forget about them when I'm not listening to them. It's nice to have their albums put in front of me through this list. Their style is so relaxed, which separates them from the more intense rap style and lyrical content that became more popular in this era. Q-Tip does great work throughout the album. The fact that this was their first album shows how quickly everything came together for this group. It's also crazy that the aspect of this album that has aged most poorly is their stance on cholesterol in eggs 5/5

This may be the greatest hip hop albums of all time.

Simple and chill, don't know what else to say about it. But a great album to just have on while working on something else. "Can You Kick It" and "Youthful Expression" my favourite tracks.

Very ahead of it's time. Still has elements of old-school hip-hop, but that's to be expected from a '90 album. Overall, very cool album. A bit repetitive at times, but I enjoyed it.

Really good early 90's rap. Lots of things to love here. I do think it gets a bit repetitive with the flows sounding similar throughout, but that just comes with the territory. It's 1990 and it's the new decade and there is so much hope and promise. I'm at my friend's parents' beach house, having a chill summer party with friends and this album is the soundtrack. This never happened, but this is always what People's Instinctive Travels makes me think of, to the point where this might as well be real. The album has a fresh, feelgood sound, with social and political commentary among the party music. It's something to be said that ATCQ can deliver tunes about sexual health, cholesterol and losing one's wallet in El Segundo and not sounding preachy or dumb. Also check out the "Why" remix of "Bonita Applebum" because that is extremely dope.

Great example of how alt hip hop can be so enjoyable and uplifting. Really interesting use of jazz rhythms and sounds. Near perfection.

3.7 - honestly thought I’d like this one more, as I listen to a few of the tracks off of it pretty regularly. It’s got great beats, lyrics and fantastic samples. It’s influenced offspring runs far and deep. That said, falls a little short of classic status, for me and this listen made me realize I probably like Midnight Marauders more for an overall Tribe listen.

This one sounds a lot more intelligent and way less annoying than most rap albums I've heard. Giving this one 2.5 stars. Rounded down because I still didn't want to listen to more than half the album.

It seems that the point of rap is mostly the lyrics. If you don't pay close attention to what's being said, it is just white noise.

There are more songs than tracks on this thing; That was clear in just a few minutes and is one of many strengths. Tribe's debut influenced much, and it's impossible to listen without that filter on. The beats, while varied, fade into the background while the runtime stretches. But the vast majority of tracks are strong, the record flows, and the mood set is unique and entirely pleasant.

I’m surprised I listened to this album all the way through given that it’s Christmas Eve and I wasn’t in the mood for alt hip hop. Having found ATCQ's next album, Low End Theory, to be extremely dull and dated, I was surprised to actually quite like this. Fun, catchy and laid back hip hop with a good balance of instrumentation and samples from a range of genres. Can/do I kick/like it? Yes you/I can/do. 3/5.

I like this album, not my favorite hip hop I've been introduced through this process, but very good. The rhythm is a bit same throughout with very little tempo change. I like a lot of the sample choices especially of course Walk on the Wild Side. 3 75 🌟

Smooth, joyous melodies, with a mix of serous and light-hearted lyrics covering a wide range of themes. Musically, this is trippy and laid back, but full of crisp and tasteful compositions, slickly produced but seeming almost like an extended jam session. A testament to the confidence of the group. A good introduction to Tribe for those who don't know them. Not flawless but a strong and enjoyable album, even for someone who casually listens to hip hop but isn't necessarily a regular fan.

A Tribe Called Quest came out swinging with this phenomenal, genre-changing record. It was positive, experimental, well-rounded, and exclusively different than anything that rap and hip-hop was known for in the early 90's. The foundation of jazz music paired with modern hip-hop rhythms is exceptionally beautiful and joyous to listen to. Each member is a master of their craft, and though Q-Tip was more of the frontrunner than he was in later releases, you can tell each songs was given the proper treatment by every member's role. I just get pure bliss and comfort from listening to this record, even if it doesn't hold the spot for my favorite ATCQ album. Nunca había escuchado sobre el grupo como tal, al empezar a escuchar los ritmos y el sonido me agarraron con sorpresa agradable, me parecía un hip-hop jazz bastante bien hecho y accesible sin pretenciones. Leí sobre el disco y el nombre Q-Tip inmediatamente me saltó. Me encanta la interacción entre Q-Tip y Phife Dawg. Me impresionó escuchar que la superposición de sampleos y la diferencia del ritmo final que obtiene. Además de esas prácticas innovadoras, el álbum se siente líricamente sólido en esa escena del hip-hop consciente sin llegar a algunos extremos que hemos visto; aborda problemas de raza y vida en la ciudad a través de la óptica propia afroamericana pero también tiene mucho humor ... también hecho de una manera sutil ... lo que ayuda al álbum a mantener su momentum y no sentirse demasiado pesado, consciencia social con un poco de tonterías es buena receta.

Se me hizo muy repetitivo: Base rítmica sencilla, rapeo encima, sample, todo junto y volvemos a empezar. Su sonido es característico, sobre todo por la base rítmica muy limpia a ratos, "hip hop minimalista" bien balanceado con los samples, pero con todas las canciones iguales.

Curiosito disco de hip hop que se oye totalmente retro. Tiene buenos momentos, especialemtne con los sampleos a Lou Reed o Stevie Wonder, pero al final creo que se pasa de duración (1:16 en la versión que yo encontré). La neta es que Can I Kick It sí es una gran rola.

If part of Q-Tip's strategy was ensuring I slapped a juicy rating on this, he couldn't have done much more than ending Description of a Fool and the album with a Sly & the Family Stone sample. Of course, I didn't figure into his strategy one (Diogo) jot(a). As with all the groups in the tentative Natives Tongues collective, the target audience here is other black people, who Tip & co. want to join them in a celebration of all things pan-African. As ever, I'm humbled to be allowed to the party--especially one whose DJ has Luck of Lucien, El Segundo, Bonita Applebum and Can I Kick It on the decks. To my ears, this doesn't groove to rhythms as Afrocentric as you'd assume from ATCQ's image, but therein in lies my ignorance. Celebrating your African roots ain't about aping Youssou N'Dour, Fela Kuti or Tabu Ley Rochereau. The very Americanness of ATCQ's sound is a reminder of how deeply American music has been shaped by people of African descent, and how disgracefully that's been overlooked and overwritten. Slapping the Ghanaian colours on this puts it front and centre, where it should be.

Wipe your feet really good on the rhythm rug. One of the greatest hip hop records of all time. Genius writing. Flawless delivery. Impeccable production value. Every song runs like honey and each interlude provides a perfectly paced breath to introduce the next chapter of the story. Packed with some of the greatest 90's hip hop tracks of all time, Can I Kick It being the obvious example. Description of a Fool is the progressive antithesis of the toxic behaviour glorified by so many of their peers at the time. Left My Wallet in El Segundo is a comedically leaning work of story telling perfection. Both Devoted to the Art of Moving Butts and Mr Muhammad even have elements of early 90's rave styles (it's a stooone groove, baby). Dropping a track purporting the benefits of a healthy diet in the middle of it all is a master stroke, not to mention hilarious. The near incoherent French over Lucien also falls into this category. One for the collection.

I am beyond embarrassed that with all the love I have give Tribe over the last year, I didn't realize what their debut album was. I always thought it was Low End Theory so while I have been blaring that and their subsequent albums so frequently, I have never actually listened to this one. These are the days I appreciate this album list. I'm only a couple songs in now but this is just as great as their other albums. Tribe may be one of my favorite hip hop groups of all time and I think this solidifies it. Amazing album art work and that same classic beats and rhymes in each song. Glad I fixed my mistake.

A Tribe Called Quest! One of the best groups in hip hop history, no question. This is the only of their albums of which I don’t own a copy. It’s a great album, a little bit before their masterpieces but some fantastic, groovy hits on here. This is well before Phife got his fair share of lyrical contributions. The crazy thing about Tribe is even if this isn’t in their top 3 or so albums, it’s still really really good. Q-Tip sounds so great. Favorite tracks: Can I Kick It, Bonita Applebum, Push It Along, Footprints, Go Ahead in the Rain. Album art: Not their best, but still pretty great. The one shown on this website is an anniversary release or something with all the color sapped out of the surrounding art. Really weird choice. 4/5

Wonky album title aside, ATCQ's debut is enough to leave me contempt. I have only really listened to their 3 most popular albums, and based off a few songs ive heard from this album i'd kinda put it off til now. I mean, there are some just great songs on here. "Can I Kick It?" or "Push It Along" to name a couple. I think for a debut it's solid, considering they followed up right after with TLET & Midnight Marauders. The production feels very 80s-ish when compared to their later work, especially with that repeating outro sample (which kind of reminds me of the chants repeates in We Got It From Here..." Can I kick it, youthful expression and to a lesser extent i left my wallet are great tracks. The rest have good samples and decent production but the lyrics are average. Definitely not their best album, The Low End Theory would suit this better.

Listened to this on a road trip. Glad it wasn’t an album of more complexity because not the best environment to listen to an album properly. I’ve an idea what this group is about already but no amount of listens will make this appeal to me. I get the appeal to hip hop listeners and get why people enjoy it. Can’t give this more than a 2. Even for a 1990 album I thought the rap was very basic, a bit silly, and in some cases very predictable. Like when a show like "saved by the bell" did a rap episode. Not terrible though. But the music was spot on.

Really good album. I've never listened to a Tribe Called Quest before, but have been trying to learn more about hip hop and its history. This album is accessible, and features a smooth flow, and beats full of jazz, funk, and rock idioms. This album does run a bit long though. However, I've listened to other albums that are way shorter but feel longer. I hope to listen to more of this group in the future. This album made me excited to delve more into hip hop.

Never listened to A Tribe Called Quest before, unsure as to what genre they even are at this point. First track seems to be starting with a sort of noise collage of windchimes and a baby crying. This is clearly a rap album, and I'm not really into rap. I've enjoyed Push It Along (the first track) and I'm looking forward to what comes after. Luck of Lucien starts with a sample from All You Need Is Love, which I'm pretty sure is also the French national anthem. And also some of Gonna Fly Now. I've always enjoyed mashups and this is no exception. The grooves on this album are incredibly catchy so far. Bonita Applebum's intro is very Ween in my opinion. Oh, I've heard Can I Kick It? before and I never knew it was by A Tribe Called Quest OR on this album. I think it was in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2. In retrospect I should've known it was A Tribe Called Quest because they basically say it. This entire album has some tasty basslines all over it. Would I buy this album? No. Would I turn it off if it came on the radio? Also no. Favorite tracks: Can I Kick It?, Push It Along, Description of a Fool Least favorite tracks: Mr. Muhammad, Bonita Applebum

Based on the title of the album, I was expecting something a little heavier and a little deeper than what I got. What I got was sort of a throwback to when hip hop was just guys having fun, making words rhyme and not really bothering with anything deeper than that. Which is also fun, but at some point kind of makes me ask why I'm listening. These guys are a lot of fun to listen to, but I never got past this question.

Album koji je lansirao ATCQ na duge kvalitetne staze hip hop, jak debitanski album sa par klasika i neotkrivenih dragulja. Iako mi je njihov Midnight Marauders u top 3 hip hop albuma ikad, nikad nisam slušao ovaj naslov. Misleći to što imaju dva jako kvalitetna albuma iza ovoga da će ovaj biti neki slabiji trud, naravno sam promijenio mišljenje nakon slušanja. Za 1990. godinu, beatovi su friški, groovie i mog reć u neku ruku za tancanje dok se spremaš na posao (što je u mom slučaju bilo) pa se ujedno sklopilo sa lijepim vremenom i tako stvorilo pozitivnu vibru. Razlikuje se od prethodna dva albuma u tome što nije toliko jazz inspiriran/sempliran. Tldr; kvalitetna grupa kao što su ATCQ - nerazočarava! (4/5)
