People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm
A Tribe Called Quest
Reviews (page 10 of 13)
I missed the 90s era of hip hop, was fully into metal and grunge/post-punk back then. I can hear why this group hit the levels they did, but at the same time I can understand why this album in particular did not perform as well as some of their later releases. There is a great amount of repetition, and some of the hooks and loops are so short that the ear is begging for some resolution that never comes. Can I Kick It? is one track I remember hearing during its heyday, and listening to it again all I can think is how I wish the loop would resolve into something more developed than a re-loop. Good stuff and an absolutely fantastic sample of the Golden Age of Hip Hop. More complicated than much of the rap that came earlier, but not nearly as angry (while still needing a number of listens to appreciate) as the also-emerging gangsta rap. I am a little sad I missed out on this when it was new, it seems perfect for the time in the same way that Nirvana was - This release was integral to the sound of the time, but as a release did not have nearly the impact later releases did, much like Bleach vs Nevermind. Does anyone else here Sheryl Crow's 'All I Wanna Do' in a number of the breaks?
Sounded like a typical tribe album. Nothing blew me away. Great beats, good rhymes
3.5
Good stuff but some of this is damn goofy
This album has got some really good tracks. I got a bit lost on first listen and I want to listen a few more times.
Rap is not my style, but this is nice enough, I enjoyed it. Old school style rap, which is better than the newer, mumbley stuff.
I like the writing and the rhythmic beats and flow, but there's just nothing special about this album. If you want some chill hip hop, this is perfect, but that's not what I prefer this genre to sound like. I like something more energetic and aggressive (yes, I like pretty much the same stuff most white hip hop fans like, sue me). This album is a bit to repetitive for me: There is not enough iterations within tracks, or the same iterations repeat with some regularity. Good album, not really my vibe. 7/10
pretty fun album.
Fun album.
-push it along is a 6/10 -Luck of Lucien is a solid 8/10. I like it -After hours was fine but didn't catch my attention, 5/10 -footprints
Manage to cultivate a vibe, fairly monotonous conscious rap
First time hearing it. Enjoyed it but not enough to listen again
That's not my taste in music - But ok
Not really the kind of music I like. It sounds interesting but I feel the lyrics are very local which alieniates foreigners to fully appreciate it. I can appreciate the creative way of using samples, and also this sounds like honest art. I always thought that hip hop from the early 90s in the USA sounded all like MC Hammer. I'm glad this kind of music existed.
A good example of mid-early rap. I could have done without the remixes of the deluxe edition as they added nothing to the experience. The first half of the album was more solid than the latter. The rhymes by today’s standards seem lame but at the time were unique. Good for a blast from the past when picking select songs but not an album I would listen to in full again.
Solid. Real easy to listen to.
Can i kick it, yes you can! 3.5/5
6/10
It's the worst ATCQ album
I like this album a lot for similar reasoning to Wu Tang; great flow, fun beats, and the Collab nature is great. While each song on this album was good in it's own right, I feel like the album had some oddly abrupt transitions from song to song; maybe it was a Spotify thing, but it was off-putting. Ham N Eggs was a fun but admittedly cheesy number. I went into this with high hopes. Most of the songs definitely had me grooving, but the lack of true standouts + the choppiness of transitions between songs brought this from a 4 to a very high 3. Brb gonna go listen to Electric Relaxation.
Some of the songs were really good like Push it Along and Can I Kick it. But others were really quite boring. I was excited to see this album come up but I left a little disappointed. Still a mid to high 3 though
Obviously influential and I can hear echoes of later stuff in this. But for me, a bit samey and meh
Good album not great, I like qtip
A lot of fun beats throughout, laying the foundation on what’s to come for the group. Not necessarily the album I reach for when it comes to their discography, I think they improved their sound on low end theory and again on midnight marauders. Nonetheless a pretty fun album that I enjoyed but probably won’t reach for when I feel like listening to a tribe called quest.
Can I kick it?
Sample city done not so bad, I was engaged through parts and other times I drifted off.
pretty good pretty good
Very good album, lots of the hits, don’t think it’s as good as MM for me though.
I’ve been stuck on this album forever. Partially because I’ve been busy with life, but I think partially because I didn’t really know how to think about it. I know there’s something of a tension between new and old hip hop, and it’s many consider the older stuff to be superior. But I’m starting to realize I don’t quite agree with that. I’m not hating at all - there’s still tracks and albums I thoroughly enjoy and would gladly give 5 stars, but there’s something about older hip hop that can just feel a little one-note to me. I know Tribe is widely respected and beloved, and that’s cool, but this album just didn’t do much for me. I’m surprised by it, but I have to be honest with myself. So to finally unblock myself and move onto a new album, I’m just going to give this a 3 and move on. I would call it a 4 but there’s just not enough tracks on here that I really loved (even the ones I liked the sound of were often just nonsense…looking at you Left my Wallet in El Segundo, Bonita Applebaum, Ham ‘N’ Eggs). I’m looking forward to getting other Tribe albums to see if they resonate more. 3/5 Highlights: I Left My Wallet in El Segundo Can I Kick It
ATCQ is always a good vibe, fun rhymes and good beats. But I tire of it by the end of the album. 3.5 down to a 3.
Would have been really exciting to have heard at the time. Mildly dated to my ears now.
good background music
I LOVE ATCQ. But Somehow I'd never listened to this album before, always having focused on Low-End Theory and Midnight Marauders. This one is good, but not nearly as good as the other two
Listening now, without the context of how innovative this album was when released, most of what it has to offer has been improved upon over time. It's highlight reel however is still full of all-timers. 3 is unfair, but I couldn't justify a 4 from my level of enjoyment.
Not one of Tribe’s best. They got much more refined as time went on
I'm not a big HipHop fan but this is ok. Not quite ground breaking having been released after De La Souls debut album but it got plenty of good press back in 1990. It passed the time when I was driving but I won't listen to it again
I really like the use of samples, the funky elements and the jazzy elements. I got The Jungle Brothers a few days ago and this is certainly far less dated. It also has good vibes, no misogynistic nonsense which is a bonus. I fear hip hop just is not the genre for me
2.5
3.5
Kinda squidgy, skewiff socially conscious hip-hop. The samples and vibes are all snazzy and jazzy and cool but also a teensy rough and slipshod plus the raps are a mite chipmunk and dorky. There are some semi-decent phases but no outright bangers and I remember their later albums being a lot better. Definitely no 3 Feet High And Rising.
Enjoyable listen. I played it as background throughout the day but when I tuned in the lyrics were interesting. Definitely more musical than most songs in this genre. I don't think it'll be on my normal rotation but if I ever want a good vibe in the background this album would hit the spot.
It’s a 3.5 that i can’t rate that way, so I’ll give it a 3. Listened to a couple tracks multiple times after the first run through. After Hours and Youthful Expression are the standouts for me
Enjoyable but heard it done better (with less phobia, 90s or not). Outstayed it’s welcome.
This was very smooth, but I don't think i'll listen again
chillaxidasical listening and good vibes
3 Sterne
Although hip hop is not really my thing--really interesting stuff. Not bad, not bad at all.
These guys are a nice contrast to the darker, "tough-guy" style that permeates a lot of the other rap albums from this era. Upbeat, fun, with some smooth flow and interesting lyrics.
I listened to the original album, not the 25th anniversary with extra tracks. The lead poet kept the beat well and was reasonably easy to understand. The short clips of older songs made me wonder: should the tribe get credit for being creative or lose credit for not being able to come up with their own music. For a hip hop album it was ok - 3 stars.
This is another one that I've never listened to, not because I haven't heard of them, just because I'm not a big hip hop head. My friend Alex was a fan of these guys, though, so I do have a positive association. They sound 90s, which isn't terrible (listenable, not offensive) but doesn't compel me either (am I looking for more edge? idk). Lucien *is* a cool name. 'Bonita Applebum' is referenced or sampled in so many other songs. Thus concludes my thoughts. Highlights: The line 'it'll take a minute rice', 'Can I Kick It?', 'Ham 'N' Eggs' (always here for the lols)
Fun album, enjoyable to listen to, doesn't take itself too seriously, good background music. Songs can blend together at times and I sometimes find songs repetitive.
A few songs, I enjoyed but honestly nothing super memorable. It’s gonna get a three cause I could see myself listening to it again with friends and not hating it. Honestly, flows in the 90’s were so wack lmao.
I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. I've listened to A Tribe Called Quest before and I thought their music was pretty lack lustre. But I definitely enjoyed it this time and I recognized a couple of samples in some songs which I thought were cool. Nothing particularly "wowed" me, but I also didn't think any song was worth a skip. Maybe after listening to more music on this list, it made me appreciate this album a bit more. 3/5
It's sometimes hit and miss with the hip hop albums, particularly as many don't age well. This was a bit of both. Somehow quite mellow in the background but also somehow just not quite interesting enough.
Quite laid back but not a massive fan of the more hip hoppy voice
An absolute classic album in its genre - a great listen as I did my Christmas food shop in the Asda- the real question is always can I kick it ….
They are capable of so much more. Still a great start to their run of albums.
Harvinaisen siedettävä hiphop-lätty. Vahva kolmepuol, arvosana ois voinut nousta jopa neljään tähteen jos kestosta olis nipsaistu vähän pois.
Nice mellow hip hop
Enjoyed it but not really my jam. Still appreciated the lyrics and vibes
Nice beat and clean lyrics. Not a big fan of hip hop as I think it is too repetitive but I have to admit that I like this album.
Look, I LOVE their point, and I’d rather listen to this than 95% of the rest of music but they do take their sweet time to get to it
I can see why this album belongs on this list and would be so beloved. For me personally the songs side on being too long and too repetitive without there being enough energy to carry my interest. The album went by pleasantly but never grabbed me lyrically or sonically and to me that was its downfall
Some fun old school beats… but it gets really repetitive after a while.
Entspanntes hip hop Album, gut gemischt und interessante Samples 3,5/5
Certainly milestone early hip hop. Good for a while but cannot listen several days to it
I wont lie i was kind of half listening. The album started as story type rap then transitioned to lyricism. I feel it was more old, vibe type rap where u just chillen with ur friends but doin a little shimmy.
classic early 90's hiphop, I can appreciate it but not sure if it's something I'd just put on to causally listen to
Interesting to see the early roots of hip hop
Can I Kick It? - yes, to the curb I’ve always dismissed these guys based solely on name and I was punished for that with many cringey self references reminding me of the questers. The fourth wall breaks throughout felt forced and may be better suited to a live performance, and I can’t say I particularly enjoyed the tone of the sample drums used. Bearing in mind this was a first of its kind and groundbreaking album both for ATCQ and hip hop in general, they made some fun choices using unique, weird, and surprising samples, but I wish they leaned into that more. This isn’t to say the whole album was terrible to listen to. I genuinely enjoyed tracks like El Segundo and Ham n Eggs. But as a whole, the album has a lot of potential I would hope is expanded upon in the future. Best - I Left My Wallet In El Segundo Worst - Push It Along
Not my usual sort of thing, but this was alright. Bit long though Recognised one or two songs 3 ⭐️
This is fun, but not nearly as fun as the pharcyde. The bears are subdued, instead of exuberant.
There was something that just didn't hook me. Like, I feel like the album was stretched thin. There was some tracks I enjoyed (footprints) but more that had me scratching my head (pubic enemy or Ham' n eggs). It was hard to tell if I was supposed to take it seriously or was it just a party album. Iunno maybe it just wasn't for me.
I want to give it 6 but will give it 3. Go and figure it out
Not that good compared to other albums by them
I just am not a fan of clean rap/hip hop. It’s no fault of these guys, it’s me. So based on who these guys are, they get a pass but nothing stands out for me. I can best sum this up as intelligent Will Smith music. It’s not a sell out like a Will Smith album. There’s a statement being made in this album. It’s just not what I’m looking for. Even with an open mind.
funky rhymes the j Cole remix in the 25th anniversary is the best song imo
Middle of the road for me was never a massive fan but still groovin
I really liked the beats but cannot relate to the lyrics
This has some classic hip hop songs
It’s Spring of 1994 and you’re 19 years old. 9/11 is 7 years away. The Great Recession hasn’t hit yet and so you are studying English at a small liberal arts college just to become an educated person and you figure a career will take care of itself, if you think about life after college at all. But thinking about making a living isn’t really done because you’re a slacker and you’re alternative and you hate the man. You’re no sell out. You’re no poser. There is no internet, or if there is it’s a weird niche thing that most people don’t pay much attention to. You and your bros are wearing bucket hats and playing hacky sack on the quad or Golden Eye on your roommate’s N64. The sun is shining. You’ve been talking to this girl who you think might be at the party you’re going to tonight. Maybe you’re drinking Natty Light. Maybe you smoked a bowl of shwag that you had to pick the stems and seeds out of for three minutes before you packed it. Maybe you’re smoking a Camel Light. This CD is playing out of a boombox and you and your friends are laughing and singing along and acting goofy and you have no idea how good you have it. You have no fucking idea.
3.5 pretty good
#396. Many high quality rappings to be found here. 3/5: quite
Real funky flow and beats. Knew Tribe Called Quest before, so it wasn't really a suprise to what the album entailed. Overall okay, got pretty repetetive towards the end of the album. Liked "Can I Kick It?" and "Bonita Applebum" but those are the bands most popular anyways.
Chill vibes. I liked the frog solo on After hours. Its good for someone who does not listen to rap
I didnt really like this song. The songs lyrics were good, but they kinda felt like mush with the song. The song wasnt really good either in my opinion. The music also doesnt really feel good or special. Overall a basic album.
Are you looking for songs that have a cool beat? The songs that are in the album "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm" by A tribe called quest may be what you are looking for. I found this album interesting because they build the music up but their voices are very calm. Some parts are energetic while some are just slow which I have never heard before. I think it's a pretty good album so i would recommend it.
the album can I kick it isn't to bad I think it was good but the can I kick it over and over again is annoying even though it is the name of the album its still pretty annoying though the rest of the song is pretty good I don't think its bad or really great I think that its okay like I would listen to it but not all the time what I liked was the lyrics when the can I kick it isn't playing and I like the singers voice its not that bad I think this album is okay and I would recommend listening to it but their are definitely better options
Do you like upbeat, and rhythmic music? Then this is the album for you! The singers' voice is really good for Hip Hop, and he keeps the beat really well. The instruments are really good, and it has a good base line. It also has a good rhythm to it. So, that is why I recommend that you listen to this album.
Interesting vibe with no crazy songs. Can't say that 24 hours later I remember any of them, though.
Not bad, lot of innovative and interesting sounds.
Sample queen
"Smooth Hip-hop". Who knew? I will likely give this another listen.
This'll probably surprise you, but I really enjoyed this. Though I have previously mentioned I'm not averse to rap/hip hop/whatever. This started off really quite mellow and relaxing, then sort of lost its way in the middle, but came back strong from Ham and Eggs. Not quite a 4, but a very strong 3. Probably a 3.8.
Groovy and chilled. A high 3.
It's one of the better classic hip-hop albums but this genre will never get a really high score from me
Being so laid back is both this album's blessing and curse. If this was ~40min it'd be great, but at 65min it verges on repetitive and boring.
Good stuff.
This was a fine early rap album. Some good raps and backing loops but nothing that stands out too much besides Can I Kick It? I'm sure it was groundbreaking at the time but through today's lens it's just a bit above average. 6/10 (3/5)
Loved this album when it came out. Three or four classic songs. I love this era of building backing tracks by quilting samples. An era tragically cut short by greed and an ignorant U.S. District judge in NY. I was lucky enough to see Tribe play in a basement in Oberlin, OH to about 100 people. They were fantastic live. All that said, I don't think this album ages terribly well. Across time it sounds quaint and awkward - like they had an idea of what they wanted to sound like and were exploring in an attempt to realize it. In that regard Low End Theory ages much better; the sound of that album is perfected, it flows brilliantly and the rhymes are much more confident and interesting.
I appreciate the chill, laid back nature of this album. I like that Tribe eschewed the bad boy image of hip hop and let their personalities shine through. I am not so thrilled with the conversational style for the lyrical delivery. I wish I liked that more because I truly appreciate the ground breaking nature of this album.
The slick beats are well produced and the performances here are good too. Unfortunately there is too much filler that end up making the album blend together in a not great way.
Blueprints for early 90s hiphop
Better than expected!
# Album Name: People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm # Artist: A Tribe called quest # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: I am not a fan of hip hop but i can appreciate this album. i like the style, sounds and feels of the earlier stuff. Its not bad at times. I've never heard of these guys apart from can i kick it. There was a couple of other good tracks like luck of lucien and after hours. The first 7-8 songs are a decent listen. Could definitely stick it on as easy listening or in the background. # Top Tunes: Can i kick it / luck of lucien / after hours # Would I listen to it again? Probably a few tracks.
Quite decent hiphop, Can I Kick It being the clear standout track. As usual with hiphop, it’s a bit too samey and lengthy.
Cool old school hip hop. I love the music, sounds kind of neo-soul. Also the samples are great and unusual. The rap reminds me of "prince of bel air". In general I am not super hooked by this album but I enjoyed it.
Great discovery. Not my usual music but I was able to listen to this particular rap music till the end.
Fun jazz and samples based hip-hop with catchy hooks. Reminiscent of De La Soul but less goofy. Q-Tip has a better flow than any of the De La dudes. Highlights: "Push It Along" (good intro to the group's sound that includes some socially conscious lyrics. I can do without the Jarobi part, though, in the last few minutes), "After Hours" (interesting story song, feels more like spoken word), "Can I Kick It?" (a classic), "Description of a Fool" (the lyrics are basically the opposite of gangsta rap...) Notable: "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" (epic story song), "Pubic Enemy" and "Ham 'N' Eggs" (okay, maybe sometimes they're goofier than De La...), "Bonita Applebum" (the musical hook is iconic, but the song itself is a bit lackluster), "Go Ahead in the Rain" (Q-Tip but his voice sounds deeper and flow is more like LL)
Uh! Some smooth hip hop album. I like the samples on this one and the vibes too, but didn't impress me much. I'll leave 3 stars.
Good vibes but quite samey throughout
- Can a kick it Rainy day
Still not a fan of rap but at least this was somewhat musical and not vile to the point of having to take it off
The samples are cool and they have a nice laid back vibe. Can I kick it is great, but throughout they album there are dumb lines like ‘wipe your feet really good on the rhythm rug’ so I can’t go higher than 3
Decent but not my favorite early hip hop
The production on People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is superior. The balance of highs, lows, right, left . . . it just sits right. The beat punches through. The samples highlight a broad range of influences and styles. The lyrics are refreshing. After the joke raps of the Fat Boys doing the twist or wiping out, or the Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff providing various narratives where parents are unable to understand their spawn, and before gangsta rap became the equivalent of rap's punk rock in its rallying protest against the life imposed upon them by the authority, we have a happy medium with A Tribe Called Quest. Light-hearted, but intelligent. Creatively fun. "I ordered enchiladas and I ate 'em; Ali had the fruit punch." "I don't eat no ham n' eggs, 'cause they're high in cholesterol." Where else would you hear this? For all the freshness and surprises, the less-inspired tracks stick out like a sore thumb. They should have trimmed some of the 76 minutes down and just keep the best offerings. What's good is good; what's overly repetitive is just derivative of itself.
Not as good as Low End Theory but still good
Loved getting turned on to this one. Keep it rolling. Loved the frogs too. 🐸
3+
+3
Mildly impressed by this. The usual MO for this genre playing out but instead of becoming bored there was something about the collection. Maybe the odd placement of the samples. The seemingly less preachy outlook. Edging towards the hinterland of cool.
Great album, particularly the first half. Wanes a little towards the end but Side 1 is excellent. Push It Along, Luck of Lucien, Bonita Applebum the pick of the songs. 7/10.
Bueno
Genius writing only gets you so far
I liked it a lot, but most of the songs felt very strenuous and repetitive which isn’t really my thing. It didn’t make them bad songs, it just made them songs that weren‘t my favorite thing in the whole world. That being said, I really really liked it overall.
great
Vibes
Decent but long. Drawn out. 2.5 maybe a 4
Honestly, I listened to this yesterday and it was OK. Nothing stood out apart from the game of working out what's been sampled. I knew Description of a Fool and Can I kick It? but a whole album of more or less the same thing? Nah. I'm 60 already. Time is short and I can't see how this is one of the albums I have to listen to before I die.
Very laid back and funky
not terrible but not impressive
That frog remix deserves five stars though. Quack quack quack!
A very chill and groovy take on the hip-hop genre that I wasn't expecting. It's one of the best in the genre – certainly in the decade. (Though it doesn't have much competition.) Nice to see Ghana's flag on the cover representing the deep African roots found in nearly all American music. The beats and riffs behind the vocals in nearly every track are excellent – so much so that I would've loved to have this album be instrumental, or even better, have a soulful/rocky singing vocal rather than a rapping one. The guitars and bass in particular really stand out. I'm not a fan of the sampling at all. Even though the source material is great (Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, the Beatles... dang), the actual licks are sloppily edited into the beginning of their respective tracks and not really integrated into the song. It's like the band's saying, "Hey geezers, we like your music too! Please give us money." And, like I mentioned above, the vocal just don't cut it here. We need some kind of melody to make this music memorable and singable, otherwise it just comes across as trend-riding dreck designed to appease the hip-hop crowds of the era. 3/5 Key tracks: Luck of Lucien, After Hours, Can I Kick It?
Music is really great, but the vocal performance definitely dates this album. 3.5 stars for me.
This album had a lot of personality, I'm not usually a rap person but this was kind of fun
Erm, it’s not bad, it’s kind of catchy, I knew one of the songs. They like to start their songs with intros from other peoples music. It was ok.
Oh dear. more hip hop. The album is a bit too long.
Some good bars and beats but the overall feel is pretty chill. Im giving this a three even though I have a like or two on here.
I liked it more than I thought I would, but it's not really my cup of tea
People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, released in 1990, marks the innovative debut of A Tribe Called Quest. The album showcases the group's unique rap flow, blending smooth, conversational delivery with thoughtful lyrics. Tracks like I Left My Wallet in El Segundo hint at the band's future direction, combining storytelling with a laid-back vibe. The album's production, characterized by eclectic samples and jazz influences, sets it apart, though the backing music can sometimes feel less polished compared to the vocals. Songs such as Bonita Applebum and Can I Kick It? highlight the group's ability to create catchy, memorable hooks. However, the album occasionally suffers from repetitive beats and less dynamic instrumental arrangements. Despite this, the overall cohesion and originality make it a significant entry in the hip-hop genre. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 3 STAND OUT TRACK - I Left My Wallet in El Segundo
For a second I was going into this thinking it was The Roots. Not sure if there is any relationship there or if I'm being ignorant, but at any rate. This album had some good moments. A few of the beats I could swear are sampled from or in other songs, upon review of some notes it seems that is fairly common amongst their songs. With the samples providing some familiarity and the general casualness of the lyrics helps make this a good chill out album. Not really anything super heavy about Ham N Eggs, and it's good to have some albums like this. Not really my style but it wasn't that bad. Favorite track "Footprints" 2.5/5
A bit of good hip hop, no complaints here.
It's fine.
The little outros actually got me super hyped just by hearing the enthusiasm. A good 'eyyyy' goes a long way! Today's winner is the 'yo, what's wrong with snails?' panning like crazy between my ears haha. I am also confused, am I being told a fairy tale about STDs?? I think I'm having fun but it's bizarre. Bonita Applebum seems to be a man trying to proposition a lady in a board room of friends who keep agreeing with him.. the random sitar isn't even the weirdest sample in there. you know the one I'm on about... WHO came up with Ham & Eggs?!? idk if it's brilliant or stupid. just yelling 'bridge! whOOO' General vibe for me is bemused and ocassionally delighted in the chaos
Although I realize this out them on the map, I like their next two albums much more. Maybe the sampling of familiar songs runs me the wrong way.
All over the place
good but not great songs.
Can i kick it?
Previously rated: The Low End Theory (3/5) ******************************** The music is fine, good beats, outdated rapping style. Lyrics not at smart as people seem to think, but I'm so glad they aren't rapping about guns, drugs, violence and n-words. I could play it with kids in the car, for the most part. I might skip the one about STDs. The appeal is still somewhat limited as they talk about Afrocentrism multiple times, which just isn't very engaging to me.
If I need some nice, smooth R&B-flavored rap, this would be a good option.
evidently important for hip hop, but i didnt vibe with it as much YNN
Less funky than other quest and not as pumped up at jurassic 5
Enjoyed but beyond the classics a lot of it does not stick in your brain even after repeated listens.
Classic powerhouse album. A good listen,
Non male, ma neanche troppo bene,
Fun lyrics and wordplay over jazzy New York beats. Psychedelic and funky. Their style definitely feels underdeveloped, especially compared to the next two albums they would release. Not my favorite tribe album, but still good.
Interesante
Old school rap +
It’s alright
Honestly, this was fun. Heard a riff I knew but never knew where it was from.
Worth a listen.
Good songwriting, the bass had some notable groove in some spots. I thought the Low End Theory was a better album all around.
Not a Q Tip fan but this fine otherwise.
Nice use of different instruments. Even if hip/hop is not really my taste in music.
I enjoyed this mix of old-school beats / music and the easy-to-understand rapping. Very chill.
Solid, but not my favorite of ATCQ's albums.
Very De La Soul
The classic hip-hop debut dilemma: praised as an essential classic for its singles and for presenting a sign of what’s to come, but time seems to not be kind to the immature looseness it presents, especially when compared to the tighter, more forward-thinking follow-ups. When Tribe is Tribe as they came to be – Phife and Tip trading verses, Ali on the mix, jazzy samples with amazing hooks – this album is worth the listen (see: “Can I Kick It”). But most of this album is not that. In fact, the rest of it is either Ali and Tip still exploring Tribe’s “signature sound,” or Q-Tip essentially rapping as a solo artists, with Jarobi as his Flava Flav-esque hype man. And like all CD-era hip-hop albums, its long runtime bloats the record to the point where I as the listener just wish I could trim the fat and have a better, tighter 30-minute album. But then again, if I trimmed all the fat here, I’d be left with very little; while there are a handful of highs beyond the stand-out singles (“Footprints” and “I Left My Wallet,” especially), it’s not as frequent as I think people think. Most of this album is badly dated, and most of it is a band obviously in search of a sound, and while that’s totally fine, it doesn’t mean this debut should be seen as a genre essential, even if the singles are genre essential tracks. It’s fun, and some of it’s great, but it’s not essential. Midnight Marauders and We got it from Here…. both deserve a spot on this list over this record. But if you like it, I totally get it, and would still listen to a decent yet inessential debut from hip-hop legends than some of the other rockist slogs on this list.
Not bad, not great either
mid
Not really the type of thing that I'm into, but still pretty good. Feels like something I'd come to appreciate more with each subsequent listen.
Really fun old-school album
I'm not a hip-hop guy, but this was actually not too bad. 3/5
Es un rap-fusion tranqui. Tiene unos temitas lindos y mucho relleno largo.
Second best tribe' album!
Smoother and more musical due to the extensive use of sampling and orchestration - good, fun, but still hip-hop, so monotonous, repetitive, rather boring....
Hip-hop. Ni fu ni fa.
Good
the beginning is weird AF. It's a good album overall, but I wouldn't put any of the songs in any of my playlists. Bonita Applebum is kinda cool though. Def didn't understand why this album is here, but I guess it's just me.
Alright
It's not my thing, so to speak; nevertheless, it's fun and interesting ;-)
Love Tribe. Great album to understand jazz and alt rap. Honestly not my favorite but there are some good hits.
Лучшая песня - Can I Kick It?
Nice
I feel a bit mixed about this. The samples and backing grooves were really cool — I like the jazz and soul samples. I like their voices and flow. A lot of the songs were pretty good lyrically. But there were definitely some tracks that haven't aged super well/were just kind of corny. My biggest complaint is that the album is just really long, and I started zoning out towards the end. 3/5 but I'd round to a 3.5
A satisfactorap.
pleasantly surprised. totally decent.
lots of good samples and tunes, but just not a fan of the genre
Can I Kick It is a bop but overall I wasn’t feeling this and it didn’t seem necessary after already having Low End Theory. Got kind of bored by the end.
I wiped my feet really good on the rhythm rug 👍🏻
enjoyed being whisked back to my youth.
It wasn’t bad but their style feels extremely dated today
A good hip hop album Top tracks: Can I Kick It
Great hip hop record just not my thing
Artistically and lyrically a great album, the production and jazz-fusion elements are aspiring but not as established as in other similar albums. It’s got a few gems but is not the all-round best work ‘A Tribe Called Quest’ has to offer by any means. Favourite Track: Youthful Expression Specific Rating: 3.3/5
Hip hop has never really been my thing, but it's one of the best intros to the genre I've heard - pretty laid back, accessable. No tracks I'd skip. I would listen again. Favourite track: Push It Along
Harvinaisen siedettävä hiphop-lätty. Arvosana ois voinut nousta jopa neljään tähteen jos kestosta olis nipsaistu vähän pois.
Clean 90s rap with recognizable back beats
I enjoyed this album much more than I would have thought. It had a great chill vibe going for it. Definitely a pleasant listen.
I'm realizing through this project that there's a certain branch of hip hop with a certain maturity to it; A Tribe Called Quest falls into this category. I get good vibes from it, unlike the NWA / Dr. Dre kind of garbage. It'll never be my go-to genre but at least I know there's something out there I can tolerate.
Hip-hop. Ni fu ni fa.
Never been a Tribe fan, too hipppity-hop-and-a-hip-to-the-hop for me. But a nice change of pace after the Rockist starting point.
Some pretty funky tunes on this, but starts to sound a bit samey as it goes on
Not at all my thing, a bit dull and repetetive. I don't really dig hip hop and this didn't seem to be a great example of the genre
It was good, long, but good.
Pretty funky at times. Not my thing, but didn’t mind it. More background sound.
Cool album, need more listens to digest some of the more lyrically dense tracks. But at the same time, very good energy and boom bap sound
long, mais sympa
decent funk/soul/R&B sound, enjoyed it overall.
Beats were good and I gravitate towards the music more than words.
didn't like this as much as i expected to
have known two songs before, vibey hiphop, spoken style, not really my style but would listen again, songs towards the end of the album better
Can definitely tell that this is early Hip Hop
Thought I accidentally hit shuffle when the second track started with the Beatles hook. Easy listen, I fuck with this.
A lot of the beats are pristine with really tasty bass lines, but the lyrics are pretty basic.
This was fun. Very boppy. Good music for walking around an airport
Very enjoyable listen. Great for vibes
Good hip hop vibin music
Early 90s rap in full force. One of the more listenable offerings of the genre
Push it along -- - freaky baby intro but I liked it I like luck of Lucien After hours is too repetitive Wasn't as into can I kick it as I thought I'd be. I like Mr. Muhammad Description of a fool is my favorite on the album
Can tell how much fun they had making it. Upbeat, could away the lyrics and would be a funky instrumental album on it's own right. "Can you kick it", was skipped, overplayed and droning.
Decent
Coincidence one day after the Q-tip album? I THINK not! Positive hip-hop! Consistently funky beats throughout. Humorous and entertaining, youthful almost to a fault, but thoughtful as well. "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" and "Ham and Eggs" have a lighthearted flow that's missing from a lot of other hip hop. Having fun is allowed here, but they still speak from their souls. Some of the grooves went on a wee bit too long, but even for that and the length of this album, it was an entertaining ride.
Very melodic and rhythmic. Well done use of sampling ("Sir Duke", "Take a Walk on the Wild Side" as two examples).
nice album. the flow was very beastie boys 3/5
Decent stuff, bit repetitive after a bit
1. puzh it along - 1.5 2. luck of lucien - 2.5 3. after hourz - 1 4. footprintz - 1 5. el zegundo - 1.5 6. public enemy - 1 7. bonita applebum - 2.5 8. can i kick it - 1.5 9. youthful ezprezzion - 1 10. rythym - 0 11. muhamad - 1.5 12. ham and eggz - 1 13. in the rain - 0 14. fool - 1.5
fairly good listen, downloaded 3,15 and 16
Distinctive and very listenable just not as an album, gets a bit samey after a while. Good to add to a random playlist.
I know A Tribe Called Quest are hugely respected and influential, but all I know of them is Can You Kick It. This falls into the two tropes of hip-hop albums I don't like, being overlong and having interstitial skits, but it does it with a charm that is hard to resist. It's not one of my favourites, but it's OK.
everything sounds the same and its pretty boring but its ok individually the songs are ok but as an album it is too much 2.5
This is from my era but I was probably listening to Megadeth at the time. This is quite inventive and sounds like they are doing something new, I suppose pioneering in the use of samples for nearly everything apart from the rapping. I have a lot more time for these guys, De La Soul and other artists I heard back then than the huge-production look at me I'm a billionaire rap of Kanye and Jay-Z and those that followed. But i'm not the right person to ask about hip-hop. Enjoyable and important benchmark album I think.
A bit repetitive at times, but definitely some classics in there.
Can I kick it carrying whole thing
Very unique. Never heard alt hip-hop before, intrigued. I don't think the album is for me, but it's infectiously catchy and fun. Top tracks: After Hours, Can I Kick It?, Ham 'N' Eggs
a tribe called quest's people's instinctive travels and the paths of rhythm is oozing with creativity! considering this is their debut album, i was amazed at what they did here. they included a variety of samples, and while the main genre was hip hop, jazz was included, too. the song "bonita applebum" was partly inspired by south asian music! also, there's definitely funk here. i found myself reminded of prince's funk and his voice sometimes, which checks out for an album released in 1990. something that stood out to me in particular was the choice of samples. with both lou reed's "walk on the wild side" used in "can i kick it?" and "sir duke" by stevie wonder used in "footprints", the original songs had a catchy melody that was used frequently in the ATCQ songs in a bookend/homage kind of way. i liked it a lot!
During a time period when rap and hip hop were starting to lean very heavy in the "gangsta" sub-genre, it's cool to hear A Tribe Called Quest coming out the gate with a debut album that was doing something a little different. Not only is the music very clearly an alternative hip-hop expression, with some very unique beats and instrumentation that are generally upbeat and funky, but the choice of subject matter and lyrics are largely different compared to what gangsta rap was bringing to the table around this time. At times, the lyrics even border on downright strange for hip-hop music. My enjoyment of this came in at about a 3 (hip-hop is always hit or miss for me), but this trailblazing album is one of those that definitely deserves a place on this project, regardless of my and other people's reactions to it.
Jazzy and cool samples. Leans a little towards "okay as background music but not really exciting" to me.
Un rollo más psicodélico, me gusta! Descubrimiento! wild sounds, combinaciones de ritmos y sonidos de naturaleza, llanto y percusión fina. Guay! Es rap
Enjoyable for this era of hip hop 3.5
Urban hip hop? Not sure how to classify this style. Not rap. The album wasn't boring. Not sure it will go on a list of albums that I would listen to again, but it was a good feel to it.
Too long, but almost entirely enjoyable. Can I kick it is an all timer
This was fine? I liked noting all of the samples but some of the songs felt long. I really liked Ham N' Eggs though lol
Favourite Song: Youthful Expression Fun, funky hip hop. New to the genre but made me excited to hear more like it.
Love Tribe and this is the early songs showing how much potential the group had. Can I Kick It? Is an all time hip hop classic, people may recognize that bass line more from this than the Lou Reed song it’s sampled from. I hope this means Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders are on this list too. (3.5/5)
a groovy example of good 1990s rap, quite a sleeper album mentioning its one-hit-wonder 'Can I Kick It?' i did enjoy the narratives and the bars are smooth :)
I recognize the talent but not my tadte
It's sad to hear music that came out when you were an adult (barely) and it sounds so dated.. It's fine, it had it's moment in the sun but it's more nostalgia than anything.
Maybe this was a unique take on hip hop at the time. Today, to my ears, it’s ok to listen to but nothing special. Maybe it represents a fork in the path that became a well worn road which is why it feels ordinary.
I guess Low End Theory was a little better. Didn't dislike this but wasn't really my thing. A little long.
Best prima
classic chill rap, I don't have a favorite but I enjoyed listening
Bored
The album is very catchy. The instrumental is at times unexpected.
Really groovy and great rap flow. Unlike some other albums I appreciate the emphasis on lyrics. Wish they would have switched up the beat and rhythm more often as it felt like every song had the same drum pattern.
This album wasn’t half as good as their album released only a year later “The Low End Theory.” The songs blended into the background a lot more and not much stood out.
Songs are too long
Good example of a rap album before it became gangsta rap. No glorifying gun culture, just a lot of social messaging. Basically poetry overloid with a simple beat. I like the sampling, particularly the sampling of Stevie Wonder's \"Sir Duke.\"
Not my style but I get how this is a classic
I feel like this is an album a lot of cool people would enjoy. Sadly I don’t think I’m one of them. I just didn’t “get” it, was mostly waiting for it to be over, it’s not my preferred form of hip hop. A few cool tracks… I think it’s objectively a good and influential album but just not for me.
Nice 90's hip-hop
Not too bad - saw at Bestival. 3/5. Good to excersize to - a bit samey.
I want to like them so much. I want to be cool. But I cannot. Some songs at certain parts were good but overall I simply cannot. I do love Check The Rhime though.
Some content was too repetitive, and some of the pieces sounded similar to others.
Sometimes the lyrics really stand out and the rhythms gets interesting. But a lot of them songs are the same tempo and same rhythms.
Chill rhythms and raw lyrics makes this more accessible than current hip hop albums.
Rap with not much emotion but pleasant
Good, but not something I'd want to hear over and over
Groovy / funky rap. Not bad at all, but not much standing out either.
Eher soft than hard. Aber abwechslungsreich und clever gemacht
nice beat but not my stye
Perfectly pleasant background music for a slightly cool social gathering. Which is a bit disappointing 😞
Nice samples, unremarkable otherwise.
a little floppy
Sick beats. Vocals ://
Pretty decent. Some nice down to earth lyrics. Good tunes and some old school sampling
Ist "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm" eines der relevantesten Hip-Hop-Alben? Jo. Ist Hip-Hop eins meiner Lieblingsgenres? Absolut!
I have heard of the artist but had not previously listened to the album. The wide variety of samples keep it interesting. I'm still really not a fan of rap though so I can't see myself coming back to it.
Altogether a solid album. The speaking style feels uninspiring to me, maybe it's the lack of affect in its presentation? It almost feels like the producers told everyone to tone it down. The rhymes could use more complexity too, or maybe it feels that way due to how they were presented. Good sampling but also feels toned down to me.
Good
Not my cup of tea
It wasn't my taste in music but did have some interesting melodies and rhythms that I liked.
Not as good as expected
Left my wallet in El Segundo - what an unusual song but such a vibe.
