# 146 : Not as good as the hype would have you believe IMO, but in saying that it has some good tunes.

Metal is typically not my lane, but all-in-all a great representation of the metal genre.

Hell ya brother

Enjoyable, but it doesn't feel quite as original as other albums by Metallica. It could be due to my own lack of historical context. The guitar riffs are as usual quite powerful, but the instrumentation at points feels somewhat dry. I did quite like Orion for its sonic diversity and melodic lines.

I’ve always been metal-curious but never enthusiastic enough about that curiosity to give it a try. And I don’t think listening to this has helped, really. I appreciated the lyrical themes presented throughout, especially the anti-war sentiments in “Disposable Heroes.” But musically, I honestly don’t get it. It isn’t for me.

Listening to this music made me anxious. lol

Very good album, even I'm not into Metallica too much. Need to listen again and again, this album Is a must

Tja, Metallica eben. Ziemlich hart, nicht mein Geschmack

I appreciate how important this album is. However I find myself unable to get into the endless thrashing. Still some incredible and iconic performances. 3/5

Good rocking out

A bit too heavy for me. I really liked master of puppets, orion, lepper mesiah, welcome home, which is about half the album... it's like 3.5

It was fine

It’s good, but silly. It’s hard to take seriously. The riffs are pretty cool though.

I’m not a metal fan so this was kinda hard to get through. I enjoyed parts of it. I much prefer the black album, and I gave it a 4, so this one is getting a 3. Does it objectively deserve better than a 3? Probably. But, personally, it’s just not my cup of tea.

I like Metallica. I think this album is just alright, Master of Puppets is a banger, obviously, but I think a lot of the others do the same thing as that song but slightly worse. Orion was a surprise, I hadn't heard that before and enjoyed it a lot. Looking forward to any other Metallica albums which turn up. Standout Track: Orion (Instrumental)

Track 1. Decent thrash metal track, nothing too special about it tho 5/10 Track 2. Catchy riffs and a classic song. 7/10 Track 3. Another catchy song, with seemingly lovecraftian lyrics. 8/10 Track 4. Good lyrics, decent song 5/10 Track 5. Same as above but abit better 6/10 Overall good rock album 7/10

I really had high hopes for this one, but it was really underwhelming. Obviously the title track is awesome, but everything else was just kind of meh. Nothing bad but nothing that tops the title track. 6.5/10 Top 3: 1. Master of Puppets 2. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) 3. Damage, Inc.

Legjobb számok: Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Orion (csak instrumental) 5/10

One of those bands/albums that I know was formative and fundamental to its genre when it came out but feels dated and silly now with decades of better music that it inspired to compare it to. Won’t be too harsh because it’s perfectly fine but it didn’t really impress me.

It was good. Songs were a bit similar in sound and long but enjoyed it

Metallica is a group of extremely talented musicians whose music I don’t really like. However, I can appreciate their contributions to the metal genre, including this album.

Instrumentals are awesome, but the vocals and lyrics aren't my jam.

Three stars out of respect

Enjoyed some of the drums and guitar, but overall bland.

Don't have the DNA to appreciate metal but they're still pretty cool.

I can acknowledge that this is an important and well-made album while also having no interest in its sound personally.

Respect, respect but not my style.

That first song suuuuucks. Master of Puppets is good and so is Welcome Home. I like the more melodic stuff but the grindy tracks are annoying. I appreciate the political message of a few of the tracks. I only recently figured out that Ozzy Osbourne had some political messages too. Who knew that these crazy thrasher bands could do that stuff?

I like the instrumentals but not the vocals as much

Not really my jam. But certainly important culturally.

Not my jam, but i still enjoyed it

Underneath the thrash there's a lot of musicality that I liked. But the thrash gets in the way for me.

Not my jam, but I get the appeal. Favorite track is Welcome Home (Sanitarium).

Metal doesn't fit me

This is probably the best version of this type of music. The guitar and drum work is excellent. But it's just not my thing.

Obviously influential to metal but gets a bit samey for me. Some good chugs to be had though, just don’t think I’m much of a thrasher.

this album showcases noteworthy musical quality; while the song durations do not entirely align with my personal preferences, overall, it offers an enjoyable and commendable sound; however, i have not yet managed to establish a complete connection with it

MASTER!! Desondanks, prima album.

its metallica - wasnt quite in the mood for it

Just a bit samey. It’s like a kid saying “hey wouldn’t it be cool if the song went like…” and then they just play whatever he says.

Can appreciate the goodness of it, but a bit heavy for my taste.

The record drew me in first because of its energy and power, but after the first couple tracks, it started to go a bit stale. I realized that what bothered me the most was that a bunch of these tracks don’t really have enough of a diverse set of ideas to justify their length, so after a while they started to melt together into WWE 2K character select music with a Power Rangers guitar solo thrown in (even if I know the music from those two are cheap imitations of Metallica). Every song has its golden moments for me, but “Orion” really blew me away from start to end. I wish more of the album was as adventurous as that song. It’s a solid record, though, and I’m happy that I checked it out in the end. Fav tracks: Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Orion

It was fine, nothing that really caught my interest though

First listen Saved 4/8 Top track: Welcome Home (Sanitarium)

I was cringing at the thought of putting up with another hour of Metallica. The growling, the rapid fire guitars and drums, American thrash heavy metal at it's finest, right? This might be as good as it gets for metal (for me) and I can tolerate it. Obviously, it's not one of my favourite genres, but my younger self might have thought this was kinda cool in it's day. You can do a whole lot worse, so turn off your brain, have plenty of cold ones and sell out your soul, at least for an hour.

Haven't listened to it in years, so it was kinda fun going back to it. Each track felt a bit too similar, but overall the album is solid.

Alright. Not my thing

Ok, men ik lige min kop te

Battery: Killer intro, nice tribute to their fans Master of Puppets: Do I dare say it overstays it’s welcome? No, the riff’s too good The Thing That Should Not Be: Not feeling this one tbh Welcome Home (Sanitarium): Not a huge fan of the “softer” tracks, Hetfield needs heavier instrumentals for his voice to work for me Disposable Heroes: This proves my previous point, best song on here Leper Messiah: David Bowie reference Orion: Ok Damage, Inc.: I feel like I can destroy a brick wall with my face Overall: While, I appreciate the significance this project has on metal music, I was left wanting more as the songwriting and Hetfield’s vocals were lacking on some of the tracks. Kirk Hammett killed it though.

A bit loud

As always with Metallica there are some parts that are beautiful but the album as a whole is just tiresome. Am gonna give this one the benefit of the doubt because I am currently listening to a beautiful part.

Liked it. Orion was a nice surprise

Top songs: Master, Damage Inc., Orion (instrumental)

There was some decent headbanging going on during particularly gnarly moments, and some decent foot tapping too. They're really tight as a band, with some great musicianship, but it's just relentless.

What is it about Metallica, why do they leave me cold. Maybe I just find Hatfield's delivery kind of emotionless. Master of puppets = some thrash, stop, say Master. Master! Then some thrash. Repeat for 8 minutes. Next song is just sludgy for 6.5 minutes. Admittedly I think there's a good song hiding in there somewhere. I'd probably say the same for Sanitarium. Disposable Heroes is good. Orion is a welcome change of pace. Ok. This is getting better as it goes along, even if I probably wouldn't ever choose to stick it on. I gave Justice For All 2 because I didn't like over half of it, this has fared better but I'm still not crazy about it. There's just so much metal I find better, funner, harder. 3.

The title track is a classic. But the rest of the tracks don't have near as interesting song structure or the insanely catchy riffs so a whole hour of it is kinda wearing.

Good content but needs polish. I’m one of the few who liked Black album and on a bit more.

This album marks the day that music moved on from the execrable "hair metal". Start with Black Sabbath and go straight to this.

They're definitely talented and artistic, but there's just something about the overall sound of metal which gives this a low ceiling. Heavy distortion and pumping chords wont ever not remind me of ridiculous arcade games. For that reason metal will always seem like what young kids must think hard music is meant to be like.

3. Not my fave from Metallica.

No interest in this

It's powerful and surprisingly "clean" guitar and drums. Just don't personally enjoy this music and was waiting for it to end. 3

My opinion of this album shifts a fair amount, but I think I can confidently say I like about half of it. ”Disposable Heroes” and ”Damage Inc.” Are the songs I really like, and if the rest of the album was as good I would agree with the hype. ”Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” I remember enjoying, Orion and Battery being decent. The other tracks I don’t care too much for, even the classic title track. The songwriting could of course be improved at quite a few places, but the biggest improvement overall would just be removing 2 minutes of runtime from most of the songs. If Metallica would’ve just cut the fat, the resulting album would be much better for it. Basically? Kill ’Em All is their best album

Noise on steroids

Some of the better Metallica but they really just beat you over the head with it.

I never liked these guys because they were so late to the game and by the time they came out heavy metal was like, two decades in my rear-view mirror. At their best, they’re heavy-metal-on-steroids and at their worst, a parody of heavy metal. That said, I can see why the next generation loved them so much. They definitely know how to throw together high-power riffs, the riff-per-song ratio is way up there and the guitar solos need to be played holding your axe vertical.

this album is the posterchild for angry metal.

Classic. Perfect workout music.

I'm not a big metal fan, but this is fun and beautiful. It is an iconic album for a reason.

I enjoyed it more than the last Metallica and got behind a few of the songs. For metal this is pretty good for me.

Pretty good, Master of Puppets (the song) was a banger. Rest is a little average.

Kind of disappointing. A lot of long, plodding tracks, which I'm generally not a fan of.

There were moments in songs that I really enjoyed, but generally it was just alright.

Not bad.

This one really set me back. I just couldn't find the energy required to listen to it - not because I was averse to doing so but I usually listen to the albums first thing in the morning and I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Then, each time I tried, I would have to stop and then I couldn't find my place so would have to start again and then the same thing would happen... so I finally have heard the whole thing and I love the effort and the playing is truly extraordinary (and influential) but I'm really not planning on playing this again anytime soon.

I’ll never understand why this is the critic’s metal album of choice when all of Maiden’s 80’s albums are leaps better. The big songs are overplayed and overhyped beyond belief and the lesser-known tracks aren’t very acclaimed for a reason, and the album recycles Ride the Lightning’s structure with only slightly better production values. Meh. C

Score for the song "Master of Puppets": 4.5. Score for the rest of the album: 3.

Puppet fuckers.

RIP Eddie. Long live hellfire club. That's the most I know about this album

Metallica was always way too hardcore for me as a kid. Still find it pretty intense for regular listening. All the peaceful interludes and instrumentals are pretty amazing and do attest to the technical chops of the band. Overall, gratuitously performative with advanced skills.

OG, next-level shit when this came out. I love how tight Master is ... so good. This album made me realize there is a lot more to music than Top-40, However, I couldn't get into metal and still can't. It all seems too repetitive and I'm not a fan of the Flying V sound.

I mean they’re good but a lot of this starts to all sound the same.

I always held them at arms length (put off by the image and merchandise) but I watched a documentary on them that gave me newfound respect and after which I find their music varied and more interesting The musicianship is impressive and at times quite sensitive before ratching up into the hardcore stuff. This is a great album although I prefer the eponymously titled album that came a few years later.

2/8, 25%

It was a good album but I still don't need an hour of Metallica. I knew some of the songs and I would listen to those songs again. The songs themselves are all way too long.

I don’t listen to these guys much anymore, but this is a solid album. Their first four albums are all pretty great. But when I compare these guys to other metal bands, I usually am left unsatisfied. When I DO want to listen to metal, I want to listen to more technical/complex or dark stuff. My favorites rn are Death and Opeth. I also like Megadeth and Judas Priest plenty. My least favorite thing about Metallica is Lars’ drum sound (especially on 'And Justice For All': great songwriting but dear god what a horrible mix). The drum sound is really harsh and piercing in a bad way, but at the same time it sounds so flat. And it's much too loud in the mix in my opinion. I want to be able to hear the guitar and bass without my ears being destroyed by the annoying drum sound. Favorite track: Orion

The guitar in this album is SO good. Such a short album yet great songs!!

As far from ‘my thing’ as it’s possible to be, yet I enjoyed a few of the tracks.

Solid album, some great instrumental work in the longer tracks, and some nice fret wanking on the closer. Highlight: second half of Orion, Welcome Home also a banger.

Wow! What a great debut album from a fresh new band. I just heard their first single, Master of Puppets, on Stranger Things last summer, and it's been getting great exposure on TikTok! So cool to hear their album in its entirety. I like that this album sounds like it was recorded in the late 80s, which is a pretty interesting choice. I get they were going for an ironic thing here so that's pretty cool. All in all a cool album from the young men in MetalLica! Looking forward to hearing their next big single on another Netflix show!

I used to hate Metallica because they seemed so serious and ridiculous but as I've aged I've realised they are actually camp as balls and it's genuinely rather hilarious and I like to think they are in on the joke too. They are genuinely brilliant musicians, and the silliness of it all is good fun. Everything on here would benefit from a trim though. How do you play so fast and still take so long to get to the point?

One of the later Metallica albums I discovered, still can't say why... It's good!

17th January 2023 Listened on the drive to and from Jess in the afternoon. Gym and Liverpool wolves FA Cup. His voice and the band are intertwined, the energy is unrelenting

I liked Metallica more when I was a teenager. Now it sounds kind of the same most of the time.

I'm a very casual Metallica fan. They're a fun concert, I like their sound, and their playing is tight. Overall, I like this album even though I'm not a speed metal fan and, after a few songs, I can't distinguish this album's songs from one another.

Best Song: Welcome Home. The guitar riff in the latter half of the song is really quite good. Worst Song: The Thing That Should Not Be. That boring, overly serious trudgery that I expect from Metallica. Overall: Metallica is the plain Cheerios of metal. Not that heavy but not that melodic, not that fast but not that sludgy. They're inoffensive, but certainly metal should aim to do more? It really gets quite boring towards the end of the album.

I like this older Metallica more than the newer stuff, but still can't get into thrash metal too much. I am always impressed by the musicality of these guys, but Kirk and James can absolutely shred and Lars is a pretty great drummer (at least in the faster type stuff). 2.5/5

Idk I never liked Metallica

This was an amusing listen. I've generally stayed away from Metallica due to prejudices developed in early high school. I've moved on from this mindset though. I listened to this with an open mind and honest interest. I found myself loving some riffs and large parts of songs; then the guitar twiddling and shallow lyrics would hit my funny bone and I'd laugh out loud. Thanks 1001. I'm glad I've ticked this off the list.

Still not a huge Metallica fan.

A thrash metal classic, but it's not really to my taste. To my mind heavy metal music is, by definition, funny. I therefore prefer my metal bands and albums to acknowledge the overblown ridiculousness of the genre and inject a bit of humour and fun into the music. This is just a bit too earnest and samey for me to really enjoy. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Master Of Puppets Date listened: 15/12/22

Heavy metal is not my jam- 3 stars tbf

The audio engineering is stellar

I've never been a huge fan of Metallica, but I've also never gone out of my way to listen to any of their music. As expected, there is some pretty impressive guitar on this album. I wish a few of the songs sounded a bit more varied. I just can't bring myself to give it a 4. Even so, there was some enjoyable music on this record. My favourite song was Master of Puppets.

Well, I didn't expect this to be as hard to decide what to rate as it did. I figured it would either be a case where I only liked Master of Puppets and the rest was boring (I already have had run ins with Battery and Sanitarium and I still think those are boring), but the songs I had never heard are suprisingly good. In an almost cruel twist all the best songs are the long ones, while the shorter ones almost always seem too long. Basically the whole album is high highs, such as the absolute fantastic guitar, and lows such as the honestly very subpar singing, which wouldn't be that big of deal but it usually makes up half of the songs run time (seriously, Orion was a godsend and a nice break before the finale), and for whatever reason the band acts as though it's just as important as the musicality, when obviously the instruments were the most impressive. It does feel far better though then the Metallica output nowadays, where they actually seemed like they cared about the music and not just because they were THE metal band. I'm just all over the place here with thoughts, and I'm gonna smack it right down the middle of the rating system, but my thoughts here feel more conflicted than a star system can really express. All I know is that as this was Cliff Burton's last album, I wish his bass playing showed through more. Throw a bass solo in there, you were willing to back in your debut! It almost feels like they're hiding it in audio remasters, but perhaps my listening apparatus of choice for this album is at fault.

OK. More varied than I expected

Instrumental masterpiece but not interesting as an album

A little too hardcore for my taste, but it's good to listen to something different.

On a whole, I do think this is pretty good but it didn’t age as well as I hoped. Perhaps though as a 16 year old when I first listened to this I was more susceptible/impressed by solos and heavier riffs. I find them boring now, and I extend that to the long repetitive riffs which at first sound class but after hearing it a few times they get old quick. Agree with Jamie that this is too long. 20mins shorter with less of the ‘my dad’s harder than your dad’ riffs/solos and this wouldve been a solid 4.5/5! Oh, and another point chalked off for some incredibly 6th form-esque lyrics. If they were playing a festival I was at I’d definitely make the effort to see them. Anyway, once through is enough for me, I served my time back in 2004 with this one. I’m going back to B-52s…

midtallica

3.5 stars - pretty cool, never listened before.

I didn’t like this album as much as I thought I would. The high point are really high, but the rest was technically impressive but didn’t wow me

I guess it's the American touch: I finally am getting some of the evil assigned to metal, though it's very high-school-impression-of-Lovecraft in the form of Thing. Unfortunately, Orion is a bit of a black hole in the tracklist, performing the same function as one of the breaks of the title track. Metallica are good when they mix whatever prog ambitions are evident here with their meat and potatoes; The instrumental jamming is less convincing.

I like metal, I like some Metallica, but I've always felt that they're really overrated and a load of people that came after them did it better and made them look poor by comparison. I like some parts of MoP but, yeah, never really gotten on with them like lots of metalheads have.

Classic!

It's pretty cool but not really my thing.

Pretty good for metal. Master of Puppets was probably the favorite

already knew and liked and it was very nostalgic

Still not a heavy metal fan, but I liked some of the arrangements and solos.

Not bad, not bad

Not my favorite of their albums, but it's good some great songs on it.

Not a huge Metallica person but like I could vibe with this. I would listen to this high

Master of puppets slaps, but I continually struggle with how the mixes of Metallica seems super thin for me. I want more low end damnit

I think I liked S&M more but that was really a concert album. Peaks and valleys on this one, but #JusticeforEddie

Better than expected.

This is the fucking thing with 80s metal, man! If each of these songs were like 50% shorter, this would’ve been really solid, but as is they’re not interesting enough to justify how long they make you spend with them.

Identifying Metallica : It’s Metallica

I like their music, but it’s hard to get past their personalities. Plus this is far from their strongest effort

Good album

This doesn't really speak to me, though it's fun to drive to and these guys sure can play their asses off. I can dig one or two Metallica songs. A whole album's a bit much, though I did dig Leper Messiah, so that was a cool new find. Sadie digs Metallica, though she said Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning were better.

Another Metallica album, and where does it leave me? Unimpressed with this beloved band and sad. Sad because I don't get it. I feel like I'm missing something. I like heavy metal but this is just repetitive. The lead vocals do nothing for me. It's long and doesn't feel like it goes anywhere, like every other Metallica album I've listened to. Maybe one day I'll get it, but that day isn't today.

Okay. Little heavy fit me.

Master of puppets is by far and away the best single on this album.

I liked that album more than I thought. I wouldn’t listen to it on its own, but I’m glad I got to hear this legendary Metallica album in full at least once!

Classic metal to close the week. Life is good

Didn’t really grow up with metallic as I’m a 200s boys, so I don’t have the same nostalgia s everyone else, not their best album at all

Here we go again. I don't care but I should care more. On the way to soccer games, the boys like to listen to "pump up" music which usually skews "classic metal." Whenever we try Metallica, it doesn't work out. Is it because Lars is a talentless tool? Maybe. But I think it's because SOME melody is needed for us soft suburban boys...

I have seen the concert of Metallica in Barcelona many years ago, It was great.

Some good guitar and drums! They are obviously a classic in this genre for a reason, but it seems just a bit too similar song to song and didn't wow me as much as I expected it to

Some belters. Some far too long. Not as hard as I was expecting.

6/10. Enjoyable enough as metal goes.

This was very uninteresting for most of its runtime. 5/10

I guess I can see how this is important and super exciting for some people but it does very little for me. No sense of fun or even really anger, it’s all very skilful and complicated but I just had to trudge through it to get to the next one.

It delivered what I expected. Some nice riffs, funny lyrics and all in all a pleasant experience. Nothing much else to say. It's good

I see the impact and significance of this album but I couldn't really get into it. Did like Master Of Puppets and the instrumental though.

Yeah it alright. Not my fave tho.

Here's my track by track analysis: 1) Definitely doesn't start off how I would have expected, but ultimately "Battery" ends up sounding like a bizarre Duracell commercial. 2) The weird time signature on "Master of Puppets" feels awkward and now I'm agitated. Perhaps that was the intended effect. 3) Did he really just say "death may die" on "The thing that should not be"? Sounds like the soundtrack to a mountain dew fueled dungeons and dragons session. 4) "Welcome Home" kinda sounds like proto grunge during the first half of the song (before they get into the thrashing and soloing). I'm sure the guys in Alice in Chains were listening to this. 5) "Disposable Heroes" is perhaps my favorite track. More straightforward but intense and kind of fun in a way that the other tracks aren't. Almost has a punk energy to it. Kinda reminds me of The Misfits. 6) I think "Leper Messiah" is the blandest track on the album. That double kick pedal really massages the eardrums though. 7) Instrumental metal can work really well! You can showcase more interesting musical structures and techniques without the distraction of the often over-the-top lyrics and/or grating vocal styles common to the genre. Not to say Metallica are guilty of those things, but it's a nice sort of intermission. "Orion" is definitely kinda proggy, but that's not a mark against it in my book. 8) I like the intro to "Damage, Inc." Kinda wish this track was swapped with "Battery" and this track would open the album and "Battery" would close it. This song would be such an intense way to open the album and you could drop F bombs on everyone right off the bat.

"MASTER. MASTER." is what I think every time I see this album title. This era of Metallic is just ok for me. Master of Puppets is fun though. I bet if this album was mixed in not such a mid-heavy way I could get more into it, it just feels a bit flat compared to modern metal mixes.

Functional head cleaning music - that feels very appropriate reflecting current world events (April 2022)

A lot of heavy topics here. Harmonizing with guitars is something so simple but so impactful. All I was thinking about is how exhausted I'd be performing this live. Favorite songs - Battery, Disposable Heroes

Is this the greatest heavy metal album ever? Maybe, but I'm not a HM guy at all so I'm not the one to judge. I will say that I preerred the Iron Maiden album as well as both Black Sabbath albums (especially 4) to this album. It's true that the musicianship is quite impressive exspecially the drumming but as far as guitar virtuosity, there's very little else that impresses me less. But I understand the quality of this album..just not for me. 3 stars

I had this pegged as the metal connoisseur's Metallica album of choice, whereas I'm more of a casual Black Album / 'greatest hits' kinda guy. I enjoyed this more than expected though; I thought it'd be mostly thrashy stuff but there's plenty of variety. Orion is a great case in point. A strong 3.5 from me.

Z drugiej strony, "Master of Puppets" należy jeszcze do tych lepszych albumów, zanim się skomercjalizowali.

Great band. Love the monster movie. Just never connected like so many people do.

This is a tough one for me, not a fan of Metallica or Metal at all but I can see how this is a classic for listeners who love metal. Not much more to say on this one. Favorite song: Orion. 2.5 based on its place in metal alone.

This album has a little bit of everything, intricate solos at high speed, thrash-metal drumming and inventive prog-riffs. Not my cup of tea, but definitely a complete album.

🤘🤘🤘 Buzzsaw guitars, ominous howls, breakneck drumming, odd time signatures. This record is certainly a mood and a half. Easily the best metal record we've gotten so far -- it's hard for me to know whether this a genre I'll ever meaningfully connect with. And to be honest, the runtime got a little long for me on this one. There's a few tracks that stood out for me, but the overall impact was a little blunted by the length. It's surprisingly proggy. The musicianship and vision are really vivid, which I can appreciate. I feel like it's one of those things of trying to judge an album on the merits of what it seeks to accomplish. And on that count, I can't find any fault with this album. It's not really my taste, but it definitely deserves a place on this list. There's something about it that feels essential. It's also striking to me how diverse the inclusions from the 1980s are here. You can really see the blueprint for all the subgenres still going until this day across these different releases. Personal rating: 3.5/5 Does it deserve to be on this list? 5/5 Fave tracks: Master of Puppets, Disposable Heroes, Orion

Great song but a million times on one album? It's good but... Not that good!

Although I'm not overly familiar with their entire catalog, I do like this band whenever I hear their music. It's more thrashy and frenetic than the music to which I typically listen, but I love the energy and I think James Hetfield's sense of melody is fantastic. I also always admire the bands' musicianship, especially Hetfield's guitar playing (Kirk Hammett is a superbly talented guitarist in his own right; I think the reason my ear bends towards Hetfield is aesthetically I'm not that into shredding). After a while, the constant driving and often staccato style of this album start to blur together for me, and even grates on me a bit, but it's overall quite good.

Enjoyed that more than I expected. “Speed Metal” comes alive. 3.5/5

Everything was slower than I expected. I thought this was speed metal. I think I would have really enjoyed this album if you could hear the bass on anything other than Orion.

Always wished I liked Metallica more but I just can't get into the heavy side of this heavy metal. Definitely enjoy their 90s stuff more

Call it the metal equivalent of the "Seinfeld" Is Unfunny trope but this seems overrated. Weird because I loved sabbath. Anyways, solid 3

I don't think I've ever heard the full-length version of the title track, so I was pleasantly surprised to find ~3 more minutes of head-banging goodness on top of what I already knew. It's that relentless energy that makes this album listenable; maybe I'm using the wrong speakers/'phones, but this thing absolutely drowns in mids that tend to wash out the bass and drums. Burton's lines deserve to be heard, damn it!

I wish I loved this album. I would like to. I know it's good, it's just not for me. Potentially because I heard all the songs at various alternative venues first while being uncomfortably pissed and/or felt up by guys with sticky hair

Disclaimer: This album requires several focused listenings to appreciate. I'd like it more, the more I listen. This album is embarrassed in the company of genuinely great Metallica like the Black Album. Musicianship and lyricism appear at several points, but much of the middle of this album is simply aggression, without substance to back it up. The album sets the tone early, with Battery, an impressive song, but also a good case study in the difference between technically impressive music and good music. Orion would have been a good conclusion for the album. It's a good song on its own, and it also returns to the theme of Battery. Every guitar solo on this album is worth hearing, in context, so you should listen all the way through, if only to appreciate the guitar solos. This album would be much better if Destruction Inc. were dropped from the lineup.

mislila sam da ce bit bolje iskreno, malo sam razocarana

Music is pretty good. Lyrics are cliched.

A whole load of meh from me. I've never had any interest in metal and I appreciate the importance of Metallica but the music just sounds generic, dull, and uninspired. Found this album just boring.

A good listen, a lot of melodic work here, and incredible drums. Well produced. Some outstanding tracks, some a little bit forgettable. Top tracks: Battery, Master of Puppets, Disposable Heroes

Wenn man wütend ist funktioniert das definitiv

Ti gasa abbastanza. Bisogna essere nel mood

Good album but a bit boring.

Master of Puppets is universally considered a masterpiece, and it's easy to see why. James Hetfield's rhythm guitar playing is technically flawless, executing intricate, rhythmically complex, lightning quick parts adroitly, but always with a human feel. His vocal performance is aggressive, but the farthest thing from sloppy. Cliff Burton matches Hetfield on bass, step by step. Drummer Lars Ulrich isn't as subtle or as tasteful as Hetfield and Burton, but he does fine. Kirk Hammet's leads are impeccable, although I personally would prefer that he take more chances harmonically, given Metallica's obvious ambition. These are complex, tightly written songs with a wide stylistic range--within metal, of course. And the lyrics match, ruminating intelligently on various aspects of the misuse of power. The band is blessed with crystal clear production from Flemming Rasmussen that allows you to luxuriate in every last note, and which neatly sidesteps all the worst aspects of 80s production. There is literally nothing to complain about on Master of Puppets at all. Why then does it leave me cold? I really don't understand. Still, on a purely intellectual basis, it's obvious that Master of Puppets (which I'm told is largely a consolidation of previous album Ride the Lightning's innovations) pushed metal into new levels of complexity and virtuosity. It obviously influenced virtually every metal and thrash album that came after it. It richly deserves its inclusion on the 1001 list. Which leads me to a conundrum. How do I rate Master of Puppets 5/5 when I didn't even really enjoy it? Here's my non-solution: I'm not going to rate it at all.

Bouncy, fun, silly.

Another eight-songer (though track lengths make up for the lack of 'em). Older than the Hand of God, for some context...

I admire their speed and their power and their talent. These guys can play. But other than the title track (which is great), there's not much on this album that makes me want to listen again. Similar to how the Ramones made me feel, I can see why other folks like them but they're just not for me right now. I think maybe they're good for adolescent dudes who are mad at their math teacher and I can't not take that personally today.

Sounds like I should buy it used. Saw this your live in 1986, band was right but it just didn’t have the passion. Now I hear that on the studio recording too.

Not too much of a metal enjoyer but this album had some good ones on there.

I'm not a metal guy but I didn't hate this album Has some punk elements. Very heavy in the tradition of Black Sabbath which is a good thing. I actually liked most of the songs. 3.5 🌟

Hope no one was expecting lyrical depth

Not my taste in music

This is not the kind of Heavy Metal that I like. It was ok, just not for me

I’ve never enjoyed Hetfield’s vocals, and most of this is too thrashy for my tastes, but Orion is so good!

Metallica is def good but Im unfortunately not a fan of metal

It's fine. There are some good riffs here and there but overall it's not for me. It gets quite tiring to listen to this almost hour long album. I get that is what appeals to fans of the genre but not to me.

I really don’t care for this, there aren’t enough levels to it

not ride the lightning 2.5

A classic

isn’t for me sorry, don’t wanna be bias as it was good music I just wouldn’t choose to listen to this, I did enjoy some of the instrumental drums 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

More like pastor of muppets

I guess, but the trash thing gets dull after the first few songs.

Maybe not my normal cup of tea, but a few solid tracks with some great energy. 7.8/10

Not my cup of tea

Some decent moments, and obviously a decent band, but too metal for me. Were I 20 years younger, though, they would likely have been among my favorites.

This album is OK, not my favourite but a decent listen. Love the drums

Normally not a fan of speed metal. But this one is a pleasure to listen to.

I know why it is on the list. Still, it hurts my ears to listen to most of the songs on the album

tiresome

I can appreciate that the music is technical, it just ain’t for me

Seemed a little repetitive, but the guitar chords got me hyped. I can see where they influenced a ton of hard rock bands I used to listen to back in the day.

Battery - Not great Master Of Puppets - All time classic The Thing That Should Not Be - Not great Welcome Home - Better, but still not great Disposable Heroes - Same Leper Messiah - Same Orion - Great instrumental, fantastic bass line Damage - Not great

Instrumental was awesome. I was in a funky mood tho so not really my cup of tea. The thing about metal is it’s always so fast and there’s nothing really drawing me in. I get why folks like it though because of the great musicians.

Some deadly guitar solos. A bit too bleak for me. 2.5 rounded up.

Tight, chunky, sanitised, aggression. The songs are perhaps a little too meandering, too long, and too self-indulgent, but some great moments.

1. Really like the sinister acoustic sounds in the beginning. Drummer goes ham. Vocals are nice. 2. Good. Second half of the song is nice. 3. I really like the main riff for this one. 4. Non-metal main riff seems really sinister, I like it. 5. I liked it. 6. OK. 7. Liked the part at 4:30. 8. Not a fan. The solo does go ham at 3:50 though.

Master of Puppets has always been a favorite track of mine, but comparatively, the others don't hold up in my opinion.

Great guitar sound. Orchestral arrangements. At the time it was intense but now it sounds pretty vanilla.

Not bad

I did my best to put aside my dislike of the genre as I played this album... The undeniably energetic music is rather undone by the twiddlydiddly guitar. The whole thing sounds a bit repetitive.

My problem with metallica is that the production is just too clean, too polished. The mixing makes everything sound understated. There’s no real dynamic range, nothing pops or shines, there’s no grit or edge. Can’t help but wonder what they would sound like with someone like steve albini on production.

it was okay, started getting repetitive real quick unfortunately, so much so that the bars honestly just sounded identical even in different songs. sorry metallica but Geppetto has you beat on this one

I can see why some would love it but very much not my thing. Kinda just keeps going on and every moment of good feels fleeting.

Two great songs but other than that it was okay

i dont think i like metallica or unc metal

Somehow, this Metallica album didn't do it for me? I normally enjoy this kind of music, I don't know what it is...but I really wasn't hooked by much of anything.

So boring to me. I fear I won't ever understand metal - just repetitive thrashing and headbanging to me. Title track was pretty good though.

eh. I don’t really like metallica

Found myself a bit bored tbh. The middle of Orion and the start of Damage Inc was a nice break from the chugging riffs. Enjoyed Sepultura more. Would’ve preferred 90s Metallica probably.

interesting as a form of music, complicated rhythms & tact, not very pleasant to my ear, lyrics seem shallow to me

I'm sure fans of Metallica think this is great but I'm no fan

Kriceni, dlouhe zacatky Zajimave postupy akordu, spousta temat v jedne skladbe

🌪️😈🌚🦾🦇

Thrash metal just isn’t my thing. How they slap together two different songs into one does not impress me at all. There’s never any cohesion or any apparent reason for why they take songs in the different directions they do. Maybe I’ll return to this after the wife takes the kids and it’ll connect with me. Rating: 2.3

Heavy metal Reminds me of trans Siberian orchestra

Black album is so much better than this one. Disappointed.

Not my type of music and I thought it got a bit repetitive, but I don't know there's some parts that sound cool

Dobbeltpedal er én pedal for meget Støj 1.8

Can’t do it

Used to love it, now I’d recommend 1000 album of same genre before this one. Boring.

Metal too heavy for me.

Not my kind of music

You ever notice that there’s two hands in the clouds doing a goatse?

It’s probably telling that I preferred a lot of the intros to the main body of most of the songs. Not very original. I do like some of their later material, but this album doesn’t really do anything for me.

not much of a Metallica person

Just not my speed, no pun intended. Obviously the musicianship is exceptional (even Lars sounds good) but I had no emotional connection except for Disposable Heroes, which is a great song.

Not my thing

idk the riffs are cool and the performances are great but this type of music was never engaging for me. it feels pretty one note to me and im not a big fan of the vocals at all.

Four Metallica albums??? That's a bit much.

This is not my cup of tea. I like some metal, but it's gotta have a touch of drama and camp, and more interesting musical elements. I found this just so straight ahead and self-serious, it got boring pretty quickly. It tends to just fall back on this mid temp chug that puts me to sleep, and all of the more technical elements were pretty predictable. Much respect to them for building a lot of what the genre is known for today, but this just sounds hollow to my ears. 2/5

sure there's a lot of craft in puppeteering but I've never found it that engaging. I certainly don't see why you'd make a whole album bragging how good you are with puppets. besides, based on the album cover I think there might be some weird evangelism going on in this puppet show.

I don't like metal

The title song was great. The rest made me refuse to believe there is a 12 hour version of this album

One okay semi famous song, and a whole bunch of guitar noodling.

Not my favorite era of Metallica

Album #124 Metallica: Master of Puppets I think I’ve given up on trying to enjoy thrash metal. After listening to Rust in Peace and Justice for All, I came away thinking that they weren’t bad, yet never really did anything for me. I assumed the more I heard, the more I would get it, and when I saw that my album today was Master of Puppets, I figured this would be the time that it finally clicked for me, since this is meant to be the magnum opus. Yet again, none of the sounds and noises are actively displeasing; however, I am just extremely bored by this music. I hope one day I can see what others like in this, but I can’t say I’m going to put much effort into it. Best Songs: Master of Puppets, Battery, Orion Worst Song: Damage, Inc Score out of 10: 5

no lo llegue a escuchar

i dont like metal sorry

Not completely horrid, but mostly banal metal without a single highlight, unless one considers OMG groans to be any sort of light. 2 " begrudging half-life" stars. I'm sure there are those who find this dredge to be supreme....

Tamborazos, riffs, cuerdas melódicas.

Can't stand thrash metal. Best: Orion Worst: Battery, The Thing That Should Not Be, Damage, Inc.

Title track aside (which is still an absolute banger), I found this increasingly tedious as time went on.

Would enjoy it more if it wasn't 60% widdly guitar and was maybe the length of Reign In Blood. Hetfield has a set of lungs and the drummer is impressive though.

Welcome to the jungle me gusto y orion la soporto

Very shouty. Can understand how people like them, but too heavy for me

Not fan of metal but always a pleasure listening to the old ones

I’ve been told this is a classic. It’s too.. uhm.. hyper. Idk. It all sounds the same to me, I’m sorry.

not for me

Marginally less frenetic than ‘…And Justice For All’ and somewhat more comprehensible. Still an acquired taste that I do not possess. Nice that it exists for those that enjoy it.

I've tried to like it, but i just don't get the love for Metallica, I can see why people like it, but to me it just sounds like shit

ok thank you but this is so severely not for me.

Not a big fan but can respect the talent

So not as good as I remembered lol the hits are still hitting but the rest is actually pretty forgettable. 2.5

too much double bass drum, not a fan.
