I realised from this I don’t like Metallica
not bad there are a few standouts but one too many lack in sound diversity

These guys are so tight on this record. Like a machine gun firing which simultaneously being hit in the ears with the handle. Pretty relentless throughout. The lighter moments are still heavy -like Orion. You can't argue with the ambition.
Can't wait to finally sign the divorce papers and blast this album while driving out of the courthouse!!!! Lol 😂😂😂 Oh god, Barbara, please let me see my kids.

In my opinion, Metallica never made a truly great album. Master of Puppets has some very strong tracks, but as a whole, it doesn’t fully convince me when listening to it back-to-back. Moreover, the sound feels a bit weak to me, and I prefer listening to live versions of the songs, where the band sounds much fuller. The real masterpiece on this album is Orion, and it’s a tragedy that the band lost Cliff Burton shortly after recording it.
When it comes to the heavy metal I listened to in my teenage years, very little holds up. Some is downright embarrassing and I can't figure out what I saw in it in the first place. Not this album. Damn, this is still very good. What is it that made them so much more interesting than their peers? There's much more melody here than, say, Anthrax or Slayer. And Orion... I don't think I properly appreciated it at the time, but Orion is the highlight of the whole album for me now.

Now I know that this is one of the all-time metal classic albums, and inspired hundred of bands to pick up guitars and try something similar. It leaves me stone cold. OK, there's a good variety, with Metallica trying power ballads, instrumentals as well as straight up heavy rock. But, it just seems too Spinal Tap-py for me.

This is Metallica from before my era, and I wasn't a huge fan of it when I heard it as a teen in the 90s. I was, however, a huge fan of metal and hardcore in general. At the time, this just sounded like last generation's metal (even though it was only a few years difference). Now, I can appreciate it without trying to one-up the slightly older metalheads, and it's really good. I probably should have liked it back in the day as well.
For sure one of the greatest metal albums of all time. The only thrash album that can compete is Rust in Peace
Peaks are high, i.e the song Master of Puppets, but everything else falls short.

fairly new to metallica but this is the first metal album i have listened to where i actually see why people call this one a classic. every song on this is full of thrashy goodness and the musicianship is really great. the highlight for me was the title track, which is thrashy and has a lot of great "change-up" moments.
5 star album. Fast, skilful and still ahead of its time. Battery’s intro mimics the acoustic intro to Ride the Lighting but instead of just have to sections, the guitars work their way into the song. Damage inc and Disposable Heroes are melt your face fast. Sanitarium follows fade to blacks nuances but adds a creepier, heavier dose minus the solo. The thing that should not be and leper messiah are amazing. Orion is the best instrumental they’ve done. Cliffs bass skills are on show but so is his composing talent. Ride the lighting and this album have a symphonic quality to them which is lost now. For me this quality helped to cover bad production and Lars’ rudimentary drumming but to be fair, lars is still fast af at this stage. Hatfield’s vocals are still piercing and Kirk shredding placed in high standings at the time of release. 1986 wasn’t ready for this.

I feel like I should've been listening to this while doing something useful like working out and not...working. But whatever, it was a kickass album. I feel like the only moments of chill were like the first 30 seconds or so of Battery before things go beserk. Master of Puppets is probably my favorite track (prob a boring take), but I also really love the instrumentals of Orion. Metallica is just the GOATed thrash metal whatever you want to brand them as rock band. Like everyone else...easy 5/5.
I dont think I've air drummed and air guitared so much in my life. Front to back this is thrasher's paradise. What can I say? It grabs you and doesnt let go, so much guitar distortion and same-ish at some points but never annoying. Prime Metallica.
Just a killer metal album. Probably the best Metallica album we’ve gotten on this list. Loved Battery, Master of Puppets, ok pretty much all the tracks. It does get a little samey by the end but by then you have a pounding headache from head banging so who gives a shit

Metallica- Master of Puppets Before listening- growing up, my friends loved Metallica. I dug a few of the singles, but I have never sought out anything further. It’s hard to be a sports fan and not know Enter Sandman or For Whom the Bell Tolls. I know Master of Puppets and Sanitarium. I have no idea what will be on this album, but I am interested. Okay- on this track list I have heard OF the song Orion. A friend in college was explaining music to me, and explained that Orion was essentially a classical song performed by guitars. Battery- I can hear the classical music in the intro Master of Puppets- wow, at least two movements for this song- the passing in the medium is an unexpected transition The Thing That Should Not Be Welcome Home (Sanitarium)- I think this is the best song on the album Disposable Heroes Leper Messiah Orion Damage, Inc After listening- I’m not a metal guy, and I have enough irritated memories from high school to sneer whenever I hear Metallica deepcuts. But the good stuff is excellent- Master of Puppets and Sanitarium are legitimate hard rock anthems. I listen to these at school, so I often start over from the beginning, which means I’m not as familiar with the second side of the album.

I love everything about the instrumentals to this album. My favorite songs on it are Damage, Inc. and Welcome Home. The main thing that keeps it at bay with three stars for me is James Hetfield's voice. I'm sorry, I just cannot stand it.

Of Metallica's great 3 (MoP, RtL, and IJfA), this is without question my favorite. No contest. While the other two are great albums, Master Of Puppets takes the cake for me with cohesion, concept, and production. I've heard this album countless times and have never once tired of the experience. Battery leads us off with a quick feint of Spanish-sounding acoustic guitar before opening and firing on all pistons in the unrelenting thrash that follows. Lars sounds like he's just trying to keep up as the bass and guitar speed along. Really everything about this song is fantastic. Then we dive into the title track. Can never not crank the volume up a few levels as soon as I hear that opening interplay. Listening to this a bit more closely, I wish they gave the bass a higher level in the mix. It is *extremely* low and demented sounding, but it is so buried relative to the dominating and wonderful heavy guitar riffs and punchy drum work. The Thing That Should Not Be is probably the most forgettable on the album, but I love the change of pace relative to thrash of the two openers. Hell of a trudging riff. Welcome Home continues the slow section of the album. Love the progression on this song. Starts out as a slow and ruminous power ballad that slowly escalates into the insanity of the lyrics. Disposable Heroes is low-key probably my favorite track on this album. One of several Metallica songs about the wastes of war (One being another that comes to mind). Drawn out intro sets the stage for how the rest of the song is going to play with tempo -- rhythmic vocal sections interleaved with pedal to the floor thrash and a catchy chorus made for crowd work. I've run out of steam, but my love for this album has not. Great listen every time and damned near perfect in my eyes. 5 / 5.
I'm giving this a 5 stars because this album is definitely iconic and Metallica is fucking awesome. I really like the album but for me personally it definitely needs to be the right mood to listen to it. Listening to it in my quiet work was funny.
Metal in ya face! I feel like I have only listened to this album in its entirety a time or two in my life. It definitely rocks out. Damage Inc was a great way to end it. Hard to find any reason to go below a 5 here.
A top album for me in my life and could quite possibly be my favorite Metallica album. Always switches between this, Ride the Lightning, and Justice. Just absolute face melt shredding the entire time. Metallica has to be some of the best song structure creating band of all time. Sanitarium is such an intense song how it goes from slow to fast. And Orion may be one of the best instrumental songs I've ever heard Slam dunk 5 all day every day.
Listened to this while working and also on a run and it fucked hard in both settings. Just totally badass.
It was ok
I don't love this album as much as some of their others, but it's also not near the bottom of my favorites from them. I have never really been into thrash metal, but going back to Metallica's older albums, at this point, gives me a lot of respect of where they came from, their work ethic, and their skill. So, I may only give this a 3 stars for my own enjoyment, but I definitely have to respect and appreciate what they did for Metal music, in general, and the huge sound they put into the world.

Very easy 5. Early Metallica is just so goddamn good. Needed this one on a Friday after a tough week.
I was new to this, and I've never liked Metallica. It started off with a really nice Spanish guitar. I immediately assumed I'd misjudged. I wondered for a second if I had accidentally found a Mariachi tribute to Metallica. And then Metallica started. There are times throughout where there is a melody and slower actual music, but it's mostly fat chugging through an anal aneurysm in my ears. I will never understand how people enjoy this. It's like everyone got swept up in thinking they're supposed to like it the way everyone did with Dave Matthews Band 20 years ago; some sort of dirtbag peer pressure. Imagine Napster being shut down over this garbage. I tried to just ignore it and listen in the background at work, but ignoring Metallica is like having a picnic in a cow pasture and ignoring the flies. I got through it, but I'm not the better for it. I wonder if there is a mariachi version I can go enjoy.
While I have a bias against this band, there's no denying the influence it had on the metal industry. Without Metallica there wouldn't be bands that put it to shame today. Also fuck Lars Ulrich.
Solid, technically impressive, memorable, achieves what it wants to achieve. I feel like there are bits and pieces that are less memorable than they'd like to be, and the album itself is not my personal favourite, but it's a 5 on excellence.
Metal has about the same place in my head as hip hop - it's OK but not really something I'd choose on a day to day basis. I know Master of Puppets is a classic, but it's not really for me.
Let's face this, this is pretty much a masterpiece by any metric. There's not going to be an easy way for anyone who's even vaguely into the rock/metal scene to go into this album objectively as a first-time listener, and considering I have listened to this album enough to learn to play most of the songs front-to-back means you shouldn't come to me for an outsider's view :P Punchy, amped-up, with crunchy guitars and growling vocals, but not so overblown that it becomes unnecessarily wanky, there's a reason that millions of people still wear this album cover on t-shirts the world over.

I was already familiar with some of the tracks on this album. It's a bit more intense than most music I listen to, but it is very well done. I do feel that Ride The Lightning is a little better, but this one is solid for sure. I would definitely listen again.

The magnificent energy, the delirious chugging guitar, the instantly recognizable vocals... Metallica are legends for a reason. I love this album and I love absolutely rocking out to it.
I accidentally almost listened to the Remastered Deluxe Box Set; I've never seen an album be 10 hours. I always think a song is done and then I'll hear MASTER in Master of Puppets like, 8 minutes in. Digging the direction. The focus on instruments pushes this forward, in a way where you have to feel the music rather than repeat a catchy hook. I thoroughly enjoy this album. It's like the Orchestra, for people who don't give a fuck.

The reason Master of Puppets is good is because there's pure talent in all Metallica personnel. Sure, thrash metal isn't for everyone, and I respect that. But if you focus on the instruments by themselves without production or vocals, they know how to play and create amazing music. I mean, this is the reason why they have a whole eight minute song that's solely an instrumental. And you know what, Metallica loves rocking out and creating long songs. These songs are extra and perhaps over the top, but they are far from being bad. Play the album again.
Finally! A Metallica album that is not their live symphonic album. This album is incredibly cohesive and presents a tight listening experience. Some tracks are a bit longer (with even the shortest track being longer than 5 minutes), but with only 8 tracks on this album, I feel like those longer tracks had focus put on them to make that longer duration impactful and not just feel like filler. I'm not saying this album is full of singles, but from an entire album perspective, there isn't a skip to be found. It's a solid listening experience that checks all the boxes: lyrics, singing, instrumentation, musician showmanship. This album really is a masterwork in thrash metal and I am truly looking forward to more where this came from. Oh, and one more thing: it's the second to last streamed song on the album (on Spotify), but "Leper Messiah" is such a fucking JAM. Know that.
Is there anything more to say than “Hell yeah!”? This is arguably Metallica’s last good record. Almost entirely straight thrash with only a little of the weird boring melodic bullshit that they leaned on heavily in later years. The title track on this album is objectively one of the best songs they ever recorded. “Welcome Home(Sanitarium)” is the only weak track. Everything else on this record fucking rips, and while it doesn’t catch the lightning in a bottle like “Kill ‘Em All” did, it’s still pretty great. If the band called it quits after releasing this one, I think they’d be up there as one of my favourite thrash metal bands ever. Fun to revisit this album, it’s been a while since I listened to it front to back. 4.5*.
That this is only 4 years removed from the primitive banging and flailing on that Venom album is remarkable. This is lightyears more interesting, more complex, and just all-around better. “Master of Puppets” and “Orion” are the standout tracks for me - both are beautiful, long songs with distinct sections so clearly demarcated as to feel orchestral. Throughout the album, there is an orchestral quality to the way the instruments are layered and the use of melodic motifs, but it especially shines on these two tracks. “Disposable Heroes” is really strong lyrically. I enjoy hearing metal lyrics that are neither all about satanic themes/imagery or an apparent exercise in how many big, sad words can be put in one bar. I really enjoyed this album, the blisteringly fast, angry sections as much as the softer melodic ones. The way they are used together across the album really works for me. I find it very impressive from that standpoint in terms of composition, and of course, the super high level of technical skill required to actually play this album as well. Will definitely listen again. 9/10
I wasn't overly familiar with the whole record here, but wasn't disappointed. It's got that 'thin' 80s production which I kind of dig. I don't think there's a duff track in the house. Favourite tracks: Battery, Master of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be, Leper Messiah.

I have hated Metallica since childhood and rolled my eyes seeing Master of Puppets as the next 1001 Album to Listen to Before You Die. "Battery" begins with Spanish style arpeggiated guitar playing before bashing away on a thrash metal rhythm, it isn't terrible and they are obviously proficient musicians who alternate sledgehammer noise with complex instrumental interludes. James Hetfield has a distinctive voice. "Master of Puppets" is an almost nine minute epic about governmental control with masterful dynamic shifts. "The Thing That Should Not Be" an ode to the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, with vivid poetic lyrics about hybrid-children watching the seas of madness for the old ones to arise. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" is beautifully melodic. This album benefits from not being the over-exposed MTV era post-1990s material, not recognizing singles or even potential commercial radio pop potential because all of the songs are longer than what corporate playlists would allow. "Disposable Heroes" is brilliant, how a culture uses abstract ideas of patriotism to compel young men and women to enlist, wage wars, and die alone in quasi-anonymity "clutching my gun" rigorously trained to be obedient and to negate identity, and in death called heroes but viewed as disposable. "Leper Messiah" takes on institutional religion "Make your contribution and you get the better seat" pew politics or a better place in Heaven. "Orion" a stunning instrumental. "Damage, Inc." thrashing final track, raging against a system.
Started off loving the Metallica sound, but the album started to get boring toward the end.
I understand the adolescent male fear and insecurities that led to this kind of "music". I also know it has a ton of fans. But to me, this sounds more like affectation than innovation. No desire to hear this again.
Some great songs, some okay songs, some songs left me with permanent confusion at how they're so big. Sorry Metallica, I love y'all but some of your music makes no sense to my ears.

I’m familiar with this album first hearing it in high school. I still think it is their best ‘speed metal’ album although not nearly as popular as the black album a few years later because it is much less radio friendly. It brings an energy that would be hard to produce later in their career. Master of puppets I took as about drug use has always been one of my favorites songs from them. The album is high energy and requires an hour of adrenaline to be available. Ahh..Violent rock! Yes I missed all that ...but now opening my mind some.. Appreciate the genre though really never listened to Metallica... Now I see they were the originators of that machine sound , or so I call it.. Definite musicianship and composition... Welcome Home is a treasure , displaying wonderful melody and songwriting...

I have to say I liked metal as a kid but from revisiting seem to have definitely left it back then, and never got into or liked thrash metal, and all the trash albums on here haven't changed my mind. Metallica are better than the others in that I at least find it listenable, and some of the guitars are interesting and fit the song. But it's chug chug, all so darn serious, so earnest, so po-faced, so chug chug along. Yes the politics of war and mental health are important subjects and need platforms to raise awareness, but it lacks shade, lacks nuance, and just chug chugs along being baseline and I don't feel the epicness that 8 minutes a song implies, just not my thing if it's yours fine.

My frequently sung dog walk anthem. That alone saves this from being 2 stars. “Buster! Buster! Obey your master, Buster! Master of Puppies, I’m pulling the strings” With Metallica, I feel there’s a good band in there somewhere who default to basic thrash rhythms and dumb lyrics. Is it wrong to like them most when they sound like Marillion? 😬

This is the best of Metallica in my opinion, but it just never grabs me. The singing feels forced/fake. Also, the shortest song on this album is 5:12, with three clocking in over 8:00. Every time I've listened to this album, it seems like editing all of them down to around 3:00 each would have kept this thing moving and more exciting throughout.
Welcome Home and Orion the standouts. Higher 3, not quite a 4, the songs are just a little too long imo.
Another rock and metal heavy hitter for day 4! This album kicks ass straight from the get go and is handily Metallica’s best and most consistent release rivalled only by the higher highs but lower lows of Ride The Lightning. This album is the definition of all killer no filler, no second is wasted on this album and it remains one of the most influential and important metal releases of all time. Battery is the best opener to a Metallica album full stop and maybe the best thrash metal opener of all time. Not a lot to be said about the individual tracks that hasn’t be said a thousand times, Master of Puppets being the stand out closely followed by Battery and then the rest. The thing that stands out to me about this record is the level of consistency achieved throughout even on the instrumental track Orion. Another thing that should be noted is the production and mixing on this album, which is maybe uncharacteristically great with everything slotting into place perfectly creating a menacing, unforgiving and sometimes evil sound that Metallica rarely found again after this release.
There would have been a time in my younger days when I would have given this a much higher rating. I saw Metallica when they were touring this album and opening for Ozzy. The highlight here is the Lovecraftian "The Thing That Should Not Be." This is a pretty good metal album, but it is no longer in heavy rotation on my playlist.
Perfect! The band that made thrash popular, perfecting the sub-genre! Made even better by the lesser than music they released starting with their self titled album.

I see there's two more Metallica albums that I've still got to catch up on and if they are anything like this then I think I might be a fan. This album is just epically good from start to finish. Faves: hard to say, maybe Orion :)
An easy 5 from me. Metallica's black album, heard at a friend's house, is what prompted me to start actively assembling my own music collection rather than relying on whatever the tv and radio served up to me. "Master of Puppets" is the first album I ever bought on CD. 🤘 Fave tracks - literally all of them, I reckon. On this playthough, "The Thing That Should Not Be" let's say. One of best Lovecraftian metal songs, and that's a pretty crowded field!
I don't think this comes as a surprise to anyone but i really like Master Of Puppets. The album always did have that thrash metal sound to it which i enjoyed even if it did start to get a little repetitive due to the lack of change throughout. While i love the fast, heavy sounds of this album, i mostly enjoyed the more technical and melodic parts of these songs which can really show what these musicians are really capable of. Despite it's somewhat repetitive nature, i still didn't find myself getting all too tired of it. I still like ...And Justice For All more but i still think this one is a great album. Best Song: Damage, Inc. Worst Song: Orion
It's a cool album

It’s incredibly precise, powerful, and drives the album with relentless energy. The songwriting is impeccable, blending aggression with technical brilliance, and it still sounds as fresh as ever. Metallica sits firmly at the top of my “bands to see live” bucket list, so my bias here is undeniable, but I honestly think this is one of the greatest metal albums ever made. This is an album that I've heard many times before taking on this challenge, and it's for good reason. It's one of the best metal albums that has been made, at least in my opinion. Songs like "Battery" and "Master of Puppets" are still essential metal songs to this day, and just in general, I think this is a great gateway album for people trying to get into metal. Overall, amazing album. High 9

The best, most enduring, of metal albums. Back in the day, we called this \"thrash metal\" while Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden did everyday \"metal\". Now a days, Metalica doesn't sound as edgy, especially in comparison with other kinds of metal. Still, I love these songs, I love this level of rock perfection, I love how this album works, embodying the best of metal rhythm and of rock melody. 4.5/5
Had only listened to Master of Puppets off this album. Was very impressed with Battery. The sound has definitely aged, but the sound itself is timeless. This was a nice listen because I haven’t listened to Metallica in a long time, but every time I listen to them, I remember how easily it wears on me. Not bad music, I can just only take so much of them. It starts to sound the same after a while. Battery surprised me. It was a fantastic start to a classic metal album, leading into the cliche 80s Metallica. The classical sounding acoustic guitar is a great dichotomy to the chainsaw electric guitar. Did Metallica coin that? Or did Sabbath et al make it popular before them? Either way, great song off a genre-defining album. Oh, and Orion? Great instrumental. I learned that it’s one of the only Metallica instrumentals. If you were to only listen to this one song from their whole catalog, you’d get a damn good idea of who they are as a band.

Songs i knew 3 (damage Inc, master of puppets, battery) Songs i liked: some of em I listened to this album while my blood alcohol content was around 75% baileys but from what I remember, it started strong then just faded a bit. Another solid album from the met but reminds me of slipknots later stuff, OK with some good songs that end up being the singles. Stopped just short of creeping into a 4 because I won't be going back to it. Very high 3.

I'm sorry bur this is just NOT THAT good. Sure the rifts are very crunchy, and the lyrics catchy, and the melodies are very well structured. However, it really just boils down to palm muted guitar and ham fisted drums. This is popular because it's basic. Even the soaring guitar solos become exactly what you expect them to be. I keep reading about the "brilliance" of Orion, the epic instrumental.....zzzzzz, it seems like a song they forgot to write lyrics to, and boy does it need them. Again, this is good music with mostly competent musicians but nothing special
All the technical ability in the world can't produce music that has any heart, soul, or emotional or intellectual depth. It's just a bunch of forgettable notes.

Well you can here how the black album came out of this. The seeds are here, unfortunately this one doesn't have tracks like enter sandman and nothing else matters to drag it out of the mire. I first saw them in 1984, and this album demonstrates exactly why I thought they were crap. Even though, retrospectively, you can hear the seeds of greater things, this is not great, not by any stretch of the imagination. A very low 2.
I just find it too cliche. Metal by numbers. Best track is the instrumental. I prefer the black album as it has a bit more variety, leaning away from the thrash and into something more listenable in places.
My problem with heavy metal as a genre is exemplified here, with the same old riffs, silly growly vocals, trying to sound aggressive and not to forget, the melodic introspective, which lead into the heavy guitar. Standard formulaic stuff.
I was only familiar with the Black album, which I never particularly cared for, so wasn’t sure if I was going to like this one. I was pleasantly surprised by the music-instrumentally Metallica does some interesting stuff and I found myself engaged for the whole album. I don’t like thrash metal vocals at all and never cared for Hetfield’s voice-I still don’t. Was also reminded they decided to fight against Napster. What tools.

I'm glad I was able to listen to most of this album on some good speakers, it begs to be played loud. The title track is my favorite, but the rest of the album is pretty good as well. The guitar riffs are iconic and there isn't a whole lot of music with more of the (now-retro) metal energy than this. I think this one earns its five stars.

Honestly, Metallica just rules. They are an insanely good thrash metal band. I'm also impressed with their lyrics. Disposable Heroes is the stand-out for me, in that regard. The instrumental song helps break up the album quite a bit, tbh. And there's a decent amount of variety in songs/style, which is usually an issue for me with Metallica. I know this is a classic and many people enjoy it. I'm sure it's amazing. I had to stop listening about 30% through the album. For me, it felt like being aggressively fucked in the ears. Not pleasant.

Been listening to this since I was fourteen. It never gets old. I still remember the exact moment I first heard Metallica as if it were yesterday. Master of Puppets. Truly undeniable. One of modern music's greatest achievements, across all genres, and as far as greatest metal albums are concerned, only Slayer's Reign in Blood even comes close to this true masterpiece. There isn't a high enough number. Rest in power Cliff Burton.

Har lyssnat på albumet ett antal gånger för att försöka bryta igenom. Men det är inte riktigt min kopp te. Det är för "mekaniskt", samma rymt som maler fram. Som ett tåg, chugga, chugga, chugga. Få "krusiduller", men det saknat black.sabbats enkla melodier och rytm.
Jag är ju en sucker för Metallica och har lyssnat mycket på denna genom åren. Master of puppets och Welcome home är ikoniska. Orion är förmodligen den bästa instrumentella hårdrockslåten som gjorts. Däremellan är det dock några låtar som är lite för mycket trash för min smak (Metallicas peak är enligt mig Black album där man gick ifrån detta). Solklar fyra dock.

When I was 12 bought the new Metallica cassette bc my older cousin raved about how awesome they were. Fuel was pretty great but the rest of the album was kinda bad. I wish he just made me tapes of all their 80’s albums so I would have figured it out sooner. Master of Puppets is an all timer, it’s relentless from the get go and I got no issues with it. 5 stars

Les morceaux sont plutôt longs, mais ils sont tous très variés et ils arrivent à accrocher l'oreille sur toutes leurs durées. Le mixage/son fait entendre tous les instruments, en particulier la basse (écoutez le chorus de basse de Orion). Et c'est le dernier bon album de Metallica, ceux qui suivent ne lui arrivent pas à la cheville ! Il mérite largement la note maximale =>5/5

The rough edges of Metallica were starting to to get smoothed off with Master. Metallica were always at their best with either ballads or full on thrash. This has gems throughout.
Can you appreciate the craft without appreciating the music? That’s how I feel about Metallica. Wouldn’t listen to this again, but can understand why it is well regarded.

I never cared for heavy metal.
Great album, Battery and Master of Puppets are wonderful songs but the rest are a bit mid, compared to these two. It was overall a very nice experience listening to everything and it was almost a full hour although there were only eight songs. I would give this 5 stars if all songs were at the Battery/Master of Puppets level but I give it high 4 for now.

James Hetfield isn't the reason I play guitar, but he is the reason I play rhythm guitar - his playing on Disposable Heroes and Leper Messiah is some of the best rhythm playing ever laid down. Great album.

A great album, just a couple of generic thrash songs stops this being 5 stars. The highlights are the title track, Battery and the incredible Orion instrumental. Always liked Sanatarium as well. It’s between this and the Black album for their best 4.5/5

Thought that was going to better than it turned out to be.
Another Metallica classic on this list. Out of their albums prior to the Black album, this is definitely my favorite among them. The album is only 8 tracks deep, yet spans almost an hour in length.There isn’t a bad song on this album, and even saying that, Orion is probably the best track of the eight in my opinion.

Marginally more interesting than their other works, but one jsut doesn't get the appeal of the endlessly repeating and bludgeoning riffs. And one doesn't hear near the level of melody and certainly no "delicacy" at all. The singing is nearly as repetitive/samey as all the guitars. Every cut is entirely too long, too. (These lads really should've listened to more Ramones and taken some lessons on brevity.) One simply can't get into music that directly correlates to migraines.

Each song was good but too long.
It was fun to go back and listen to this album again, because I probably haven’t played it front to back since the ’90s. Back in the ’80s and early ’90s, every time Metallica released a new album, you could tell they’d leveled up from the last, especially with their technical skill. But when Master of Puppets came out, it felt like they leveled up a couple of notches. Their first two albums are classics, but this one really put them on the road as a force to be reckoned with.

I expected to like this album more, given the band’s incredibly loyal following, but it’s hard for me to take it seriously. It’s not that I can’t handle harder music/metal - it’s just that this feels so sterile. Everything feels too tight. Where’s the soul? This is about as interesting as a concrete business park from the 80’s. I feel like I gave this a really honest effort over the course of multiple listens, but came up empty each time. Maybe I’ll enjoy other Metallica albums more. I almost gave this a 2, but I’ve given out 3’s to other albums that are even less interesting (and certainly less impactful to an entire genre), so a 3 feels only fair here. 3/5 Highlights: Master of Puppets Damage, Inc.

9.8/10 - as close to a masterpiece as any album I've ever heard. This one is packed from start to finish, showcasing technical thrash metal (Battery, MoP, Disposable Heroes), to darker, heavier metal (TTTSNB, Leper Messiah) to ballads/instrumental (Fade to Black, Orion), and closing out with Damage Inc., which feels like a good mix of all of the above. Every rock fan should listen to this album in its entirety at least once in their life.
Yeah, it seemed fine. Wasn't really (and rarely am) in the the mood for a whole album of this.
I like a lot of metal, but never got into Metallica. I wouldn't even say that I went into this open-minded, I was actively trying to like it, but I just didn't. Maybe that says more about me than Metallica though. Not so bad I'd turn it off, but I just can't get excited about it.
Honestly a slightly disappointing Metallica album. While I thought Ride the Lightning was a perfect balance of dynamic playing and hard/heavy rock, ‘Master’ leans too much into the metal thrash.
One of my all-time favorites, but it has the song that should not be. I always skip that one. Only reason it's not a 5* album. Favorite song: all the other songs.

Fantastic album. First Metallica album i ever listened to back when i was in high school.
The best parts for me: the energy, the stompy chanty parts, and the medieval or classical-sounding lead guitar. 'Orion' stood out too me. However, this album feels LONG, and a lot of the songs sound the same, and the lyrics aren’t always memorable. The grunted, strained lead vocals also wear thin.
Y'know, I've never really liked or gotten into Metallica, but this one was alright. Some corny lyrics, but I respect that they were talented and went pretty hard. Solid 3 stars.

This album turned Metallica from a band playing hard and fast, to a band playing hard and fast with purpose and meaning. To go from Ride the Lightening (previous release) on an independent label, to this absolute monster of a mainstream release is revolutionary. Easy to place in my top 5 Metallica albums, a lot harder to work out where it fits in the top 3, but such an important and aggressive album. Craftsmanship on their instruments and the lyrical maturity for guys in their 20s is rare occurrence. It’s interesting how Slayer brought out Reign in Blood the same year, playing hard and fast but singing about hell. Metallica do exactly the same and explore the idea of hell on earth. A dark undertone of the events that follow in the bands career make this way more hostile and volatile than just metal heads singing about war.
My forearms ache just listening to the sheer amount of thrashing. Thoroughly enjoyed this album, I've never listened to it in full. I got RSI from bobbing my head so much, it's energetic, it's heavy, proper filthy riffs and fun solos. That's metal baby. Of course Master of Puppets is the big hit here but my favoirite song was Welcome Home (Sanitarium), and absolutely loved Orion, instrumental was a nice break before smashing the ending. Play it loud.
I'm not a fan of Metallica but I do understand why this is considered a great album. I was 18 when this album was released and I do vaguely remember the death of the bass player Cliff Burton in the same year. I like Rock music and I like some heavy metal but thrash metal is not my favourite. Great album though and worthy of a 4

About 250 albums or so in and I’m experiencing the first instance of real memory issues with this list - I swore we (i) already pulled this one. Anyhow this is a markedly incredible record. Outside of some obvious “Metallica” sounds, you can barely tell it’s from the 80’s, or any certain time period. It’s all energy, all perfect execution. Even as i listen to this at 5:30am to start work, I can only be super impressed with how tight the production & performance is. It’s missing some softer dynamics/ maybe one melodic interlude away from being a true 5/5 for me, but i recognize this as the holy grail for metal heads and respect you if you give it 5 stars

One of the best albums of Metallica (depending on the mood I'll switch between this one, Ride the Lightning and ...And justice for all). Every song on this album is fantastic. Sadly this was also the last album to feature Cliff Burton. This was Metallica at its peak.
Thrasher metal was not really my scene back in the day and listening to this album did not convert me. Much of the thrashing just ran together and was not great for background music either.
I have to say I was not surprised this album made the list. I sort of spoiled it for myself when I went to the wikipedia entry for this list and saw "Trash Metal" as one of the featured genres. I immediately knew Master of Puppets was on the list. When I think of "albums that defined a genre", this is the first that comes to mind, and it's arguably the best the genre ever produced. This album will be, almost w/o a doubt, the Number 1 album on this list for me. That is, if Ride The Lightning or AJFA are not included. MoP is one of my top 5 albums. It's probably the one that I've listened to the most times back to back in my life. It's really special to me. More often that not, it transports me back to being 12-13 y/o and discovering my love for this sort of music.

The masterpiece that elevated the thrash metal from a simple 'get-fast-and-get-loud' type of music to practically an art. Carefully crafted, with lyrics that went beyond the 'rock and roll lifestyle' that was so common among their peers, full of classical influences and references, both musically and lyrically, and technically flawless

Oh Metallica...never had a connection or felt strong either way about them. Listening to their album for the first time, there were some nice parts. The guitar riff halfway through Master of Puppets was nice. Orion was good mostly because it was different and showed depth. The rest of it just meshes together and ultimately sounds the same, loud drums and loud guitar. Maybe that is my problem with metal...its very two things, loud and screaming (and I don't like either). I will give them a 3 only because I can see the influence here. They made metal mainstream and something more people can enjoy. Some might argue that is bad, but I think anytime you can introduce people to something and make more people accept it you are doing something right. Maybe they are sellouts, but they did make metal palatable and a few good sounds.
I'm not really into Metallica. Not my thing. There are moments when I'm like "ohh.. I like that riff and that drum beat is cool". But overall it's kind of boring.
This sounds like the same song on repeat. And why are the songs so long. Tough one to get through.

Nogmaals: Ik ben geen Metallica of metal fan, maar ik vind dit stiekem toch wel leuker dan minimaal 80% van deze lijst. Na Sanitarium worden de nummers wat inwisselbaar. En enigszins aan de lange kant is het ook wel. Ik hou het op 4 sterren.

A classic. It took me a while to get into Metallica, but they're awesome. I probably prefer Ride the Lightning, but there is a reason this album is beloved. It is Ride the Lightning but dialed up a notch. I just prefer the songs on Ride The Lightning by a smidge, but they're both insanely good.
A metal head's paradise. To anyone else it's a decent listen with one awesome song and a bunch that sound a lot like it. Regardless you gotta love the energy.
This was much better than their self-titled album. Fewer songs which were more distinct. Battery and Master of Puppets were great opening tracks. The only thing holding it back is just how samey his vocals are on every track and how dated and compressed the instrumentals are. 3/5

This is poor. I don't understand how such loud, in your face music can be so boring, but it's really, really dull. I'm just coming to the end of the second song and it's already starting to piss me off with it's shit repetition. An easy one. Total shite.
Pretty solid Metallica. I continue to be impressed with the band's actual skills as musicians, and the songs I wasn't already familiar with were decent. Still not really my genre, but I can appreciate it.

Je suis vraiment déchirer devant cet album. D’un côté, je capote pas sur Metallica: j’aime pas le beuglement toujours pareil boum boum dans mes oreilles de Hetfield, le mixage est débalancé (on entend à peine la bass à Cliff, tu parles d’un héritage) et all & all, j’suis pas un fan de métal. Ayant ces opinions simili tranchées qui gigotes dans ma tête, j’ai été abardasourdi par la qualité de l’album. Le rythme d’écoute est bon, y’a des bons riffs et on entendent (un peu) la bass! Le meilleur moment de l’album est definitivement Orion, l’arme instrumentale secrète du groupe qui me fit faire du air guitar dans la rue. Je pense pas que c’est un 5 pour ma part, c’est quand même 54 minutes de Metallica, mais ça mérite amplement un solide 4

I like to say “planetarium” instead of “sanitarium”. This one is sort of played to death in our home. I associate it with bar pizza. And now I’m hungry.
Definitely the quintessential thrash metal record. I think I prefer Ride the Lightning but for Battery/Master of Puppets alone this gets 4 stars. Damage Inc, Orion are also pretty solid.
