Reviews (page 9 of 14)

primera vez que escucho un album completo de metallica 3.5 / 5, thanks eddie and the hellfire club

I would definitely be listening to some of the songs again like the guitars alot and have a Rockstar energy 6/10 Orion instrumental is great it feels like 2 songs in one when it switches up the second one is goated and I didn't know how deep rock songs were great messages

What was initially an eye roll at today’s album pick immediately became appreciation as I delved back into what was long forgotten in my mind, the world of Metallica. A memory of seeing them back when I was a teenager with my friends and feeling an electric atmosphere. Are those days behind us? Maybe I haven’t given up on metal yet. Melodic, anthems, head bangers, a good range of crescendo and slower tracks.

Metallica is a great band and Metal has actually been my highest rated genre so far in this countdown. But I wasn't amazed by this. Certainly, the title track is a cool song. I also liked Orion. Instrumentals don't bother me at all, and I would encourage anyone who likes that track to go check out Joe Satriani's catalog, as it is a lot like this song but more melodic and with (much) better guitar work. Beyond this, the only other track that I thought was very good on this was Welcome Home (Sanitarium). It has a bit of that One feel to it. The rest of this was very average to me, and this record pales in comparison to And Justice For All or the Black Album. 3 stars.

I wanted to give this less stars but James Hetfield broke into my house, beat the shit out of me, and stole all of the cash out of my wallet.

Psh more like Puppets of Napsters!

bla bla historical value... bla bla big steps bla bla i dont car. its fine

It was raw and lacks the sophistication of the commercial approach of "Metallica" album. There were quite a few tracks I enjoyed and even though I'm not a fan of this type of heavy metal, I see see why this album was popular.

Honestly feel like Metallica would be an even doper band if they turned down the gain knob and just made chiller epics

not my thing but Orion rules

Kinda all sounds the same? But good for aggressive pre-studying walking and the general I hate my live situations.

Have I listened to this album before? How familiar am I with this album? No How do I feel about this artist? Metallica is very cool but I’ve never been very into them First impressions: I think this is gonna be the quintessential metal album and if I’m not into it then I’m not into them Favorite track(s): Welcome Home Overall Thoughts: This was my second Metallica album in a row, I had S&M yesterday. I would’ve rather had it in the other order. I think I am just not big into metal, it’s not that I don’t enjoy it but it just does not really grasp me. But I can tell this is a good record and I see why a lot of people love it.

oh i’ve heard this before. not my favorite metallica but it’s fine. was not in the mood for this today. the title track is a little corny, hetfield’s lyrics are pretty consistently corny. i miss when metallica was good i’m a bass player, of course i like orion.

It’s fine enough but all sounds like the same song after a while! They can play, they can pause and they can play again!

What do you say about a band you don’t like - who influenced a bunch of bands you DO like and defined a whole genre - that you haven’t already said three times in reviews of their other records? This is a technically well made album and you can tell they put effort into making it... but reading the wikipedia article paints it as a kinda try-hardy effort to win over critics and gain some more popular success. That sounds exactly like something Metallica would do and I don't love it. This album and I both turn 40 this spring. With just two days to spare, I appreciate the album generator unburdening me of all the Metallica albums before my next decade begins.

Kinda rips

There’s a lot to be said about an album like this by people more qualified than me… I’m into Metallica for a few of their songs but I’m not sure the full album experience is for me. I’ll take one rendition of “Nothing Else Matters” over an entire album again. Talented but not my taste

Some all right angry white boy metal. Lots of tracks though could be shorter, especially towards the end as I lose interest. Top tracks: "Master of Puppets," "Battery," "Disposable Heroes"

—Battery…\m/ —Master of Puppets…good rhythm guitar in the opening. Some solid riffage but it’s whatever —The Thing That Should Not Be…nice guitar chug. Lovecraftian imagery. Other than that, a little basic —Welcome Home (Sanitarium)…Hammet doing work here --Disposable Heroes...the speed is really impressive. Hammet again! The end rips --Leper Messiah...didn't love how it started but the ending fux --Orion...\m/ --Damage, Inc....sounds like an AK-47. hells yeah

I understand why it's a classic - it's timeless and it's clear to see how it's referenced as an influence even today. On a personal level, I found it to be a little repetitive and while there wasn't a song I necessarily didn't like, I don't think this is an album that I will find myself wanting to revisit. (as of right now my rating is 3.5/5)

Surprised at how much I liked it, clearly a classic album for a reason. I think I would probably enjoy it more if I looked into the lyrics or if I was a generally more angry person

OKAY fine i like some metal

battery - good start, very nice master of puppets - i think ive heard this sumwhere.. (jk ofc ive heard it) very good song. ooo ok it got more chill now at around the 3min mark thats nice.. holy hell this is a long song tttsnb - i like the start yay! i like the continuation yay! ooo i like the guitar at around 3.40 welcome home (sanitarium) - my mums played this 4 me b4, very good damage, inc - intrestin start very good album, not exactly my taste but i can appreci8 well done music

Not my cup of tea in terms of the metal genre

Me gustó. Me guardé 5.

Full Album Thoughts: Album Rating: 2.88 (B) I am down with the Trudgemank, but this is no Taranchula's hit "Moving Very Slowly". This suddenly makes Infest The Rats Nest make more sense. This is, as I say elsewhere, "Easy Listening Heavy Metal", nothing is offensive, the production is clean and crisp, no parts are actively harmful to listen to... but it does tend to blend together. You hear one song, you kinda hear them all? Which is not to say there arent stand outs! I just get tired by the end of the album. I am actually going to give it a 3 star, as its Fine To Listen To In Full... As Background Zone Out Music. Track Thoughts: "Battery" B+ Okay so I never listened to Metallica, so I had no idea what to expect, I was not prepared for Baroque and or Spanish Guitar intro. Fast == Gooder is not always true, as there are slower breakdowns in here. The tones of the guitar+drums+bass, while muddy and heavy on the low end, actually are still mixed to where they still stand out. "Master of Puppets" A- Hello E1M1. This escaped containment, but I cant say I've ever listened to it in full? Like, legitimately, I am more confused that this is NOT E1M1 exactly and so hearing it feels akin to a cover/re-interpretation? Why the sudden "mastar" lower pitch pirate echo, and then we have this really beautiful classical breakdown... I am getting Castlevania vibes here too. The back half of this song is actually killer, better then the Famous Riff part. Both are good in their own right, but one is an S tier song (the later half of an 8 minute performance of virtuosity) and the first half is Iconic. "The Thing That Should Not Be" B+ I distorted swimmy detuned guitar? And then back to the chugga chuggas... I am most intrigued and find my enjoyment the highest when NOT being bludgeoned (or battered eh) by the chugs. So this is just proto-Enter Sandman. Like its not FAIR that I go "Oh 'The Thing That Should Not Be' is just a proto version of Enter Sandman" but that is all my brain can think and then I spend the whole song going "I should just be listening to Enter Sandman" instead of artistically engaging with the piece as is. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" A+ I keep getting my hopes up by the intro to these songs that they are going to have a different pallet to paint from. And this time I wasnt disappointed. I love this tone. It has a smooth transition to the heavier chorus briefly, and then we get back to this again, soaring guitar solo showing off the more melodic composition, rather then the percussive chugging. I dont know if I can claim ANY Metallica song is a deep cut, but this tail end of side one is like, the album highlight so far! "Disposable Heroes" C+ What is the version of "Easy Listening Heavy Metal"? Idk why I feel like this music is just mellowing me out. Very regular rhythmic structures coming at you fast, with enough variation to keep you interested in different phrases, if not individual bars? Now, this song starts to lose me as its lack of melodic variance, its very One Note for the chorus/verse, even if the solo is very beautiful (though a criticism of "its just scales played fast" is not UNFAIR). Also, while the message "War Is Hell" is important, I am not sure the emphasis is on WHY this is bad, just "this is bad" and so also "well we are wanting to write music about hell... this is hell on earth... lets just... take this iconography then" just kinda falls flat FOR ME. And you know what, its just too long. I said it. Sue me. "Leper Messiah" C+ Everything I said about the musical structure in Disposable Heroes holds true here, points off for lack of as sweeping a guitar solo, points... well do I add points for being only 6 minutes as opposed to 8? What is my time worth? Oh no hold on, there was a brief guitar solo that literally did sweep the scales. Okay so maybe we just keep this also at a C+ as an also ran? "Orion" (instrumental) C This is marked as an instrumental. I know I havent spoken much about the Shout Singing yet. I dont mind it actually, as it helps cut through the low end heavy production. But I have so far enjoyed the actual Song Writing when they have given it the focus, rather than the rhythmic chugging. So I had high hopes for this. What I got was... Trogdor the Burninator? aaaand ive checked out. Im sorry. This instrumental did nothing for me. "Damage, Inc." C Mercifully short. The album drags. I am now done.

Ya escuchado. Estuvo bien

A bit long and a bit heavy for me but I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would

Some legendary song intros in here got me real pumped. But it can become a bit of a drag

Surprisingly didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would. Master of Puppets (the song) was good though.

Just a bit too much thrashing on the guitar, too many songs sound so much alike.

Not their best album, but it still rips. Listen to it as loud as possible.

I like it in small parts, but not as a whole album. The formula becomes a bit repetitive, the lyrics are not their forte and I can't stand "ballads" from metal band (here "Welcome home"). Ugly cover. 3.75 / 5

Chugging prog metal, isn’t my thing.

Repeat listen

I appreciate the talent, but it's just not really my jam.

This is not my kind of music but I can tell it was very good at what it was trying to do. I added “Orion” to my Generator playlist.

Thrash metal.

Metallica is good, but this is a lot for one sitting for me. I prefer them in smaller doses.

Unpopular opinion. This record is actually not very good. Kill em All was a better record as the incorporation of punk influences was better realized. I get that this is recognized as the defining moment for thrash. I appreciate the political slant of the lyrics. It’s just that the songs are almost prog length and the sound is kinda thin to be honest. 1986 was a great year for punk and metal. Dead Kennedys released Bedtime For Democracy, Agnostic Front released Age of Quarrel which is a markedly better album than Master of Puppets. Agnostic Front - Cause For Alarm mines similar territory and then Big Black released Atomizer. So when I start stacking up Master of Puppets against those records it doesn’t. I know that there are several other great records that were released that year that I’ve omitted but I guess that’s the point. When the Metallica record is just part of the pack, it really is just average. I get it. This is when they started to blow up and become mainstream popular. They were loud, melodic, but not scary. And that is the secret. They were no longer scary. They played these long ass tunes and while admittedly they are enjoyable they are not earthshaking bone rattling in your face metal massacre type songs. There is even an instrumental. Nope. Just average. 3/5

I expect it’s the best if you like this sort of thing.

This just doesn't do anything for me. The drone of the drums and guitars muddies the musicality and lyrics. If I could remove the 'heavy' I might enjoy this.

Not my favorite Metallica album. And justice for all, and kill em all are both way better albums.

I like one off Metallica songs but an entire album is a bit much.

Battery - 3/5 (excellent intro, not a big fan of how it chugs along for the last 90 seconds or so. Hetfield still finding his voice at this stage) Master of Puppets - 3.5/5 (hard carried by the riff and the instrumental section, lyrics are clunky in places but at least Hetfield's voice has conviction to it) The Thing That Should Not Be - 4/5 (probably the best one so far, everything fits together perfectly on this one) Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - 4/5 (another strong contender where everything just fits. The final solo and outro are particular highlights) Disposable Heroes - 4/5 (yet another solid number. Excellent soloing and verses, everything fits just right. Only fault is that it's slightly overlong and lyrics get fairly repetitive) Leper Messiah - 3/5 (a fine piece in the latter half. Nothing particularly memorable to my ears save one of the solos) Orion - 4.5/5 (a great, highly dynamic instrumental that doesn't overstay its welcome. A nice break from an otherwise non-stop, hard-hitting album) Damage Inc. - 4/5 (a fast-paced, relatively brief closer without enough memorable passages to tie up the record neatly. Credit to those breakneck solos) OVERALL - 7/5.10

This was fine; Metallica might be more of a "hits band" than an "album band" for me.

This was my first time sitting down and listening to this genre. I have to say that it really just isn't for me... The instrumentation, the vocals, the production - really well executed, but just not my kind of music. I feel like, as a singer, I just prefer a melody I can follow within a different style. That, again, is not to say that this isn't a good album. I can see why it is as big as it is amongst fans, and I can see why this album was detrimental to the development of this style of music moving forward, but it's just not for me. They also felt a bit too long for my liking. Stand-outs: Master Of Puppets Battery

Not my taste but cool запил

Alright. Didn’t really buy into the many 8 minute songs- felt a bit too long. Not as good as the black album in my opinion, just overall quality wise.

I am no Metallica super fan, but there musicianship and arrangement make it understandable that they brought metal to the mainstream.

I liked this more than the Black Album, but not by much.

i dont get the metalica hype. i don't know what makes it so special, its boring dragged out old head metal. i don't even hate metal im just bored asl by this

I'm sure this is a very good example of what it is. I just smell sweat and stale tobacco.

Not an album I am familiar with but has become my favourite Metallica album. Good combination of the early thrash and more melodic elements. Very solid 3

I enjoyed today's Metallica album a bit more than their eponymous LP, but still a 3. Probably the max for this genre for me.

fine but not my cup of tea

I didn't know Metallica had so many epic ballads. I think the shortest song was about 5 and a half minutes so these guys really know how to jam for the long haul. I've seen Metallica live and they were really good.

Not bad

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would given that there weren't many of the traditional hits on it. I particularly like Orion

First three songs were good, then the rest was average at best.

I am sure it's good for those who love the genre.

I'm probably missing something, but I just found this wearing after a while. Master of Puppets is great, but I found a lot of the tracks very samey. Orion was nice as a change of pace/tone near the end, however Damage, Inc took us straight back to where we were. Disappointed.

I can see why it’s popular

Not really a thrash guy, but it’s easy to see how impactful it is and how it’s aged so well, also the core theme is really solid too. I can totally understand giving it a 4 and i’m on the edge of that myself, but i’m more of a Ride the Lightning kinda guy.

Was always more of a Lighting guy during my (in retrospect, surprisingly long) Metallica phase. Something like Lighting = Justice > Metallica > Puppets > Kill. Puppets is pretty good, but always felt one note, more in the Mustaine lane.

The worst one of the Ride-Master-Justice trio, in my humble opinion.

The era of big hair and big guitar. It's fine. I'm off the opinion that many who loved this type of music stopped listening to everything else, and I find that sad.

One of those bands I 'know of' and definitely recognize some songs from but have never actually sat down and listened to an album. I don't think I've heard any songs from this album though. I really enjoy screamo, which is like... metal's child right? Opening notes of Battery absolutely hooked me. I think this will be a good listen. I enjoyed most of this album. A good one to just sit and headbang to! Master of Puppets had such an interesting time signature!

Not my favourite to listen to ever, would give 3 stars

Decent album A bit hard to listen to start to finish (too much fast tempo at once). Some of their greater songs too.

eita pega FAVS (top 3): master of puppets, welcome home (sanitarium), leper messiah mençoes honrosas: the thing that should not be, disposable heroes sinceramente nunca fui fa do vocalista do metallica, nunca curti a voz dele KKKKKKK acho as musicas mt parecidas mas elas sao boas entao pelo menos isso ne KK :P nota final: 3/5

Great start for Metallica. Master of Puppets is goated, but the other songs can feel unnatural

Masters of melding "I can actually understand what the vocalist is saying" a la the New wave of British Heavy Metal and the playing very fast speed metal that would replace the NWOBHM. Not my thing but definitely foundational.

Many powerful songs, but since I'm not a metalhead, listening to an entire album was a bit much for me.

Not a huge Metallica fan, but they have my respect.

Boring metal

Excited for this one !! Quintessential Metallica right here. Really dark and gritty. Songs are REALLY long. Fav song is ‘Welcome Home (Sanitarium)’.

Is this our first Metallica? Maybe so. Well, they belong on here, no doubt. The genre "thrash metal" is a bad omen*. Also the album cover. The songs are very long. I don't like the genre, but it seems fine for what it is. Is that a 2 or a 3? I don't know!! Highlight: 'Leper Messiah' * Is 'Orion' space thrash metal?

I really like the first half of this album but, and I know this is the least cool opinion in the world, I don't really get into Metallica until they shed some of the thrash metal and get more melodic first four tracks are about in the sweet spot and the rest loses me a bit

The opening of the album is sickkk. Oh my god that guitar? And then followed with the heavier ones… its fucking epicc. Surprised how much i liked this. I did start getting tired of the guitars on like the last 2 songs but for the most part it was really cool and hyped me up!! I almost started levitating during the second part of Orion, when they slow it down, i can’t even explain how much i loved it, literally life changing. good album!

I mean, it's a super famous album, so

This doesn't do anything for me. High 2. Some interesting phrasing but generally unappealing for me

5/10 A slog. I appreciate there is some serious skills here, but it is gets a relentless bludgeoning of the ear.

The only Metallica album I actually own. Not one I listened much, chuggs away nicely. Some duds, but mostly good. 3.5 rounded down. Heard before? Some Owned: Yes 48/196 (24%) Will I get: Already have

Not bad, but not my vibe.

I get it. This album is a big deal, and bits of it are awesome. But there are a couple of points where my heart sinks. The first is halfway through each track when you hear 'Screeee! Diddly Diddly Dee!' and you know that you're in for a minute or two of some of the most directionless, un-musical guitar aerobics ever committed to tape. The second is when the guitar solo finally stops - because then you realise they're just going to play the entire fucking song over again. Honestly, there are some awesome riffs and ideas here but there is no earthly reason why some of these songs need to be over 8 minutes long. Less is more, gentlemen.

Foundational and amazing instrumentation but not my favorite.

Yeah obviously it’s iconic, but two Metallica albums in one week, both listened to before 8 am, means I’m kinda burned out on thrash metal

Now I understand why some people enjoy Metallica.

It’s ok, a bit too metal for me

It’s Metallica before Lars sucked as much as he does now

01) Battery - 6,0 02) Master of Puppets - 9,0 03) The Thing That Should Not Be - 6,5 04) Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - 6,0 05) Disposable Heroes - 6,0 06) Leper Messiah - 6,0 07) Orion - 7,5 08) Damage, Inc. - 6,0 TOTAL: 6,63 (66/100) Current ranking: 542/802

It was technically good I just have never preferred this album

I know this is considered a classic of the genre, but as someone who isn't a big fan of that genre, it left me cold. Gave a second listen to be fair, and I liked it a little bit more but overall I think it's just not for me.

It’s records like this that made me enthusiastic about doing this project. Never would I willing choose to listen to Metallica, but the drive to give records and artists a real chance is very cool. That being said, this record is not for me. Doesn’t make me feel much of anything. Songs are too long, too alike. Not a huge fan of the whole white boys writing about themes of rage and oppression via screamy vocals and fast guitar. -Ruby I had a period as an adolescent where I was really into heavy music but I never really dug Metallica and I’m not sure why. By all metrics, I should fuck with them — they can play their instruments (hell, they sort of invented a whole new way to play heavy music), the compositions are interesting, and the lyrics and their delivery could be much worse. This album is exemplary of that and why it’s a landmark in the thrash genre but at the end of the day, it isn’t for me. —Noah

Ok 3/5

This is not my favourite album by the band, but the song Master of Puppets still whips ass!

Ughhhh the fourth Metallica album on this list. Ok here goes. Back to hell 😅 Ok right away the mix on this album is dog shit. How is there like actually zero low end? —— Ok I found the remastered version. Def more enjoyable. And I'm not a purist to make a case for the original. I'm just listening on my computer after all. "Where's the dreams that I've been after?" —— Made it. Not nearly as bad as the live one. I agree with folks that Orion is good. 2.5

Classic.

Much better than Metallica’s self titled. Still metal though, which is just not my genre.

Metallica has always been about the hits for me. I don’t really love too much else. I’ll rank the albums I know in order for me personally. 1). Ride The Lightning 2). Metallica 3). Search and Destroy 4). Master of Puppets 5). …And Justice For All 6). Whatever else they’ve got going on… … Infinity). St. Anger (and that fuck ass snare Lars is smacking around that sounds like he’s hitting a metal propane tank)

Already listened, and I think it's a little overrated. Not bad by any means, the title track is still probably their best song in my opinion, but that is the only point in the entire album I revisit. Good album, even if only carried by the title track, 7.5.

Cool guitar solos, but otherwise sounds a little bit samey.

Classic

Good enough

The way this was mixed or something made it so low. I had to turn my volume up to max to hear anything. Also I don’t think this is some of their best stuff. Loved the Orion instrumental though.

Is this a good album? Obviously it is pretty good but once again for some reason they put all the really good songs on the back. Would I ever choose to listen to this of my own free will? Never.

A classic.

Metallica’s fandom makes much more sense to me now

Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is a certified new-to-me banger

What is the hype with these guys? This is just average 80s rock music.

Not for me but headbang on everyone 🤘🏽

Decent listen.

Starts very strong but teeters out in the second half of the album

not a big fan of metallica

Technically impressive metal weighed down by juvenile aggression and too much Kirk.

Cool and musically interesting, but I probably wouldn’t seek it out again.

Opening track got me. Is pretty metal for me... Long angry songs well played and sung. Listened before? N Saved tracks? N ⭐⭐⭐

Great title track. So long, though. ⭐⭐⭐

its metallica for sure. wasnt super excited but then i noticed that earthbound definitely sampled Battery and thought ohkay yeah i could rock with this!

Unexpectedly enjoyed it, not typically a fan of music without lyrics or heavy metal but I was bobbing my head along. I think some of those guitar solos would hit on a run. Started it quite late in the day, but went back to listen to the track Master of Puppets again - really is amazing.

Every song is too long, however, the energy is undeniable.

This has some pretty good stuff on it but I still don’t like the band because James Hetfiels is an archetype of an rightwing hillbilly.

Mid. completamente mid. NO PUEDO.

Pretty good! Probably a 7/10 just because the songs are very long! The guitar riffs are amazing and so is the sound overall. Usually not my kind of music but it’s fun to venture into new stuff every once in a while.

Good album I’m just not a huge metal fan

I was never a big Metallica fan. I like individual songs, but all in all, I enjoyed it

so boring, i prefer the other album much more. i like “disposable heroes” though 3/5

Great instrumentals but not my cup of tea

Don’t really like when metal is mixed with joyful chords, but it was fine

Eh, it was fine. Loud and fast, not much differentiation. But I didn't hate it. I wasn't listening to the lyrics very closely, but it seemed like there was less toxic masculinity than in the other Metallica album I listened to earlier this year.

Pasta of Muppets

6/10. Some nice sweeping melodic moments but not sure i like as much as the black album but some classic metalica riffs. Bad drumming. Repetitive.

Not a huge heavy metal girl. I do enjoy the instrumental parts immensely. Welcome Home and Orion probs my fav tracks on this album.

I want to give this album a 3.5 but I can't so I think I'm gonna go with a 3

Super long songs, love the instrumental but the shouting is too much for me

not my genre

not a metallica fan, but I can appreciate this album for its iconic status

Solid album even if it isn’t my thing. Favorite songs are Master of Puppets and Orion.

I like the instrumental. Quite repetitive and was bored of it by the end. Really good for what it is but not my thing.

Just finished listening to it. I don't know if this genre classifies as rock or metal, but I don't think that it's really my thing. It was a good listening experience though. My favourites from this album were "Orion" and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)." Overall it was good listening experience. I enjoyed the drum work especially in "Danger, inc."

I was really excited to listen to this but I was a bit let down to be honest. I think it's just been massively overhyped Good album? Yes. But not as life changing as people make out Honestly I enjoyed the music but the songs were too long for me personally. Master of Puppets is a great song but I'm more of an Enter Sandman fan 3 ⭐️

Good, but not their best. ★★★

Not a repeat listen

Hard not to think “this is really dumb” as you listen to this, but in between those thoughts there’s some good rockin. A new find for me is Orion, kinda been playing it on repeat. Title track also rocks.

Saved this album for my first workout after a long Christmas vacation. This album starts off so creepily and cool and then launches into metal heaven and stays there for the first 4 songs. It starts to fall off after that, but I was left feeling pretty satisfied with what this genre gives me

If enough people love a band, I try to give the benefit of the doubt and assume there is something there to enjoy. But my taste is really getting in the way of trying to appreciate this objectively. I guess that’s just a Midwest nice way of saying Metallica kind of sucks. Hetfields voice is one of my least favorites (Steven Tyler comes to mind as well) and I just can’t do the rhythm or lead guitar tone, it’s so serious and lame. Still found myself enjoying moments in a later listen: Battery is cool opener, Master of Puppets I’d never really heard, and Orion is a decent instrumental even if it sounds like Trans Siberian Orchestra and has a cop out fade out as an old band director used to call it (seriously, wtf?).

*Master of Puppets is an all time song but the rest of the album was a little bit of a slog to get through. *The guitar solos are excellent, but its often just mid-tempo rock chugging along in between the interesting parts.

Respect the craft, the complexity, tempo changes, and intricate riffs. But honestly, too much shifting for my taste. Not for me.

Maybe it should be a 4 instead idk. It's good but I'm not sure about it overall.

Enjoyed listening to this while washing dishes

General thoughts: Gets boring with each song. James Hetfield angry singing is a factor in that. Music should be able to convey more, so this album feels very narrow for me. Also, all songs dragged a bit too long. Good trash should be quick and dirty. Outstanding song(s): Battery, Disposable heroes Weakest song(s): Orion Cover: Good - for metal albums' standards Real rating: 2.93

I’m surprised at how energetic this is, and melodic. It’s maybe a 4 because I like how different it is. I do not understand where this came from. I don’t understand in general where metal comes from or who it’s speaking to. Not who the audience is, but who the anger is directed towards.

Not bad! but not really my genre of choice. I really like the guitars etc but not a huge fan of the vocals.

I liked this much better than the Metallica album I had a week and a bit ago!!! It felt a bit more melodic, and the songs felt like they had more depth to them, even though some of them did drag on a bit for my liking (seriously, sometimes I would think a song was coming to an end and thought "oh, well that was actually pretty good" only to look and find it was ONLY HALFWAY THROUGH). I'm still not a metalhead, but I would sit through this again with little complaint. Faves: Battery, Disposable Heroes, Orion

Harder stuff than I normally go for, but this has some musicality and introspection as well.

A great workout album. I am blessed by 2 Metallica albums in one week. I am sorry for missing yesterday's album.

good head banging, but didn't vibe much with it

Great music to listen to when you’re stuck waiting for delayed trains and want to scream

actually not that bad but they somehow managed to make it all sound like the exact same song

Fun record. Not really my thing, but I enjoyed it.

other than the album-titled track and ‘Orion’ it’s mostly just the same song with minor changes. It is always the same structure with the solo(almost the same every time) coming at around 3/4 of the song. Yet I guess it is one of the best trash metal albums

Just doesn't hit the way it used it. Still exponentially better than anything they released post 1992, but if I'm in the mood for this I'll probably put in Justice instead.

bit of a weird one to start the day. i vibed a little but it was just noise to me then

Master of Puppets (the song) is still (I think) my favourite Metallica song. They have some great songs... but as an album there's a lot of "meh" too. So many of their songs just don't land for me.

'Pounding out aggression turns into obsession.' I think that line articulates well my trouble w/ metal: it's obsessive to the point of being compulsively neat rather than chaotically heavy. Formula reigns - even the occasional shift mid song is too much an anticipated variation. I don't doubt that this record is as influential as it's reported to be, and for that reason I respect it, but Hetfield is not my kind of gruff (I'd take Lemmy), and the messaging is politically upright yet brims w/ cliché: 'Welcome to where time stands still / No one leaves and no one will.' Succinctly, it doesn't give me the energy or the remnants of a shattered beauty I know it gifts others. Wallace Stevens insists that the supremest poetry 'must change.' This doesn't change enuf.

Great guitar solos, excellent drums

3/5. Ok

Eh bom, mas não eh o melhor. 6/10

It’s was pretty good master of puppets was a banger

More teenage anger expressed through various stereotypes of emotional and physical pain.

Like Stranger Things!

it's good and i think that master of puppets and the thing that should not be are really nice if a little long but it just feels a little decadent for a metal album that lowkey consists of mostly yelling the name of the song. i think its a little overrated but def good!

"I was born for dying." Here's the thing about metal: the brief is crystal clear—and when executed to a T, enjoyable as hell, enduringly! Play as fast and loud as possible, unless you're building up a killer guitar riff. Sing-scream. Combine two or more of the only acceptable narrative themes, i.e., epic ones, which include: killing, losing, lying, descending into madness, and Mordor.

Very iconic, but I’m not much of a powerchord person. Also the production sound of that time is somewhat meh

This album sounds like what Wyld Stallyns wished they'd sounded like. I know this is a famous album and all, but it hasn't aged well and all the songs pretty much sound the same for me. At least I know why I was never a Metallica fan. No melody, no real variation.

Good but not my vibe

This is a 3.5, it might go up to 4 with another good listen. Not enough vocal range of melody for me, but the guitar is good for being in a rage to.

I used to think this was really overrated, but after seeing Metallica live I have a new level of admiration for the band and the songs on this album. low 3.5

Metal at its finest. 3.5 stars

Preferred the live album with the orchestra but still enjoyed this one

I have this album so while I’m not a huge Metallica fan, I thought enough of this that I felt the need for it to be part of my collection.

Leider nicht meine Art Metall, quietsche quietsche Gitarre, nerv nicht. Manche Momente aber noch gut.

Would I come back to it - perhaps, chigging guitars and all that jazz. But not enough loud quite loud for me to really vibe with.

Not a metal guy at all but this is a classic metal album.

Hard, fast, kids loved it. Asked for master of puppets followed by sandstorm by Darude.

Never actually listened to a Metallica record before. Very technically impressive. Did not pair well with reading on my subway ride home.

Big, zesty pot of Rally Sauce. This would be excellent music to install sheet goods or shingles to.

On some level you have to get into this when you're a teenager (or close to it.) There's something about their music that felt world-opening in the late 80s when the slightly older kid of my parents' friends played it for me. And yet, I was plum terrified of their whole thing the first time I heard them and swore Metallica off til their play for mainstream watered down the music and Nirvana was already pushing the limits far beyond what I had been exposed to, making the black album seem far more tame than Master of Puppets. Listening to this now, I still feel the pull to it of a teenage boy, but I either can't find the thing that makes them special, or the thing that made them special was embedded in the context of their time. Or maybe I just don't have the hobbies or habits that lend themselves to getting swept away by Master of Puppets in 2025. Still, everything here is undeniably craftful and feels elevated above the other metal albums that have been served to me in the 1001 albums project so far. I did grow tired of it after awhile and it felt like they were treading the same territory over and over again. Songs that want your attention for five minutes or more require the proper scaffolding to sustain their lifespan. New ideas or movements lift up many of the iconic 8+ minute songs, but even simple shifts in timing, octaves, or textures can do the trick (Stevie Wonder is the GOAT at this.) "Orion" had that going for it, to the point that I didn't even realize James Hetfield hadn't sang one note the entire track when it was over. The title track does that too, though it relies so heavily on speedy guitar solos that it wore thin, though the riff is so wildly kinetic that I can imagine someone living with that song since they were 12 years old holding it up as an all-timer. In general I've lost my taste for guitar solos over the years unless they're delivered by someone who can truly emote through their playing (Prince, Jimi, etc.) Then again, I can listen to house music for an hour and notice every small shift and new element along the way, so maybe I'm just not a fan of metal.

1 Battery: I really like the instrumentals in this song. The intro is also amazing. It lacks on the lyricism part though. 2 Master Of Puppets: Pure cinama, love it. 3 The Thing That Should Not Be: Boring 4 Welcome Home: Another BEAUTIFUL intro, love that. 5 Disposable Heroes: Nothing much, underwhelming, nice guitarsolo 6 Leper Messiah: Boring as hell 7 Orion: LOVE IT, perfect 8 Damage, Inc.: Not for me As a whole: I generally like the album... in smaller portions. It gets enough fast. The instrumental parts are beautiful!! It has some bangers, but also a few bad appels

I listened to a lot of Metallica when I was younger and full of teenage rage, so this felt like a less-than-pleasant trip down memory lane. Metal isn't my cup of tea anymore, I find it repetitive and I need some more performance from my vocalists. That being said, I see the importance of this album and I appreciate its technical strengths (especially the guitar and drums). The title track is a lot of fun and I still dig "Leper Messiah." I also didn't realize how big of fans of Bowie these guys are/were.

At first I felt the album was thrashing just to thrash. But that thrashing allowed me to really get enveloped by the parts where they let the melody ride. The juxtaposition really works here. Guitar was used to keep time in a way I found interesting. In the end, the ride couldn’t out weigh the thrash and it became kind of a slog by the end. Only so much of that cycle that I wanted to go through.

Title song is obviously a banger but the rest of the album was just alright.

"The Thing That Should Not Be" je tud kul. Me pa dejansk kšn del spomne na "Enter Sandman "? "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" ma instrumentalno (na začetku, pol res šopajo) bl chill vibe, tematsko bl temačno. "Disposable Heroes" sam fakin šopa. Fak, prou js sm zmatrana k je konc. Spomin me je spet zafukal, ker večino naslednjega komada, "Leper Messiah" gruntam zakaj mi je ta besedna zveza tok znana. (Fakin Bowie lyric je!!!) Ok, "Orion" ma zanimiv začetek. In na splošno je spet tak komad, k te popelje on a whole ass journey. In, a se men sam zdi, a do zdj še ni blo vokalov? (Ja, instrumentaln je. Nisi totalno zgrešila vokale.) Najs je. Mogoč najljubši do zdaj na albumu. Tazadn mi ma isto kul začetk. Ne bi nujno spet poslušala, ampak I had a good time.

real slog after track 5ish

The dissonant harmonisation on the thing that should not be is so annoying, and by the end I'm a bit fed up as most of the songs sound the same. It's got some of their best points but I insist this album is wildly overrated.

Metallica is fun in moderation - I love a little head bang and thrashing as much as the next guy, but man are those songs long or what?!

Maybe if Lars Ulrich had a puppet master, he’d be good at the fucking drums. My god. If he was in a paper bag, he could not drum his way out. Gun to his head, he would die. That’s not to say it’s 100% shite, but it’s like 87% shite. The rest of the gang are killing it. Technically, I give this a 2.6.

Thrash Metal has never appealed to be, despite being loud, fast, and aggressive. This album singularly brought Thrash to the mainstream… even if it took a few years. The title track alone is one of the best rock compositions ever written, unlike the title track to KISS’s catastrophic 1998 failure “Psycho Circus” which almost killed Rock n Roll forever. Due to this being Cliff Burton’s final album before his unfortunate passing, it holds even more power in the genre’s lore, beyond it just being one of the best representations of that era or otherwise. I wish after all this time that Metallica would learn how to turn up the bass in their album mixes. “ReMaster of Puppets” 🤓

Pretty solid rock album, I understand why this is in some people's top albums

Their third album. Metal. Not a huge Metal fan, however this was a technically very good album. Master Of Puppets, the title track, is a good example of this. The Thing That Should Not Be is also a good track. Orion was my favourite. A solid album.

Das Albom esch för mech weder so es Konscht Albom wommer ned eifach so cassualy losst wel mer am beschte aktiv am zuelose esch zoms voll chönne gniesse. Das esch z. B. au bi I Wish You Where Here enorm e so. Was ech s gfühl ha was es zo dem macht esch dass es rächt langi Songs send, wo aber huere guet ufbaut send. Das esch zom biispel bi Master of Puppets e so. Trotzdem esch es halt emmer no Metal. Do gods vorallem drom e möglechst energieriichi Musig änezbrenge. Das idem mer möglechst vel Instromänt of einisch lod lo spele. Das ged eim denne chli s gfühl dass de Song eifach chli zämegwörfleti Stemme esch. Wemmer meh it rechtig hard rock god, zom biispel met AC/DC denne esch jedes instromänt sorgfältig platziert. So konkurenziered sie sech ned wie do sondern onderstötzed sech. Während sech AC/DC also wie e suber schmierti Maschene afühlt, esch das eher eini wo eifach vel z vel gas ged zom öberhaupt z laufe.

I prefer Metallica’s Black Album, which is more approachable, I guess, for a non-metal fan like me. But the sound here is polished, and the songcraft is mature. Just not my thing, I’m afraid.

A little heavy for my taste, but it’s definitely a masterpiece.

This was OK but after 54 minutes of brutal noise, the silences that followed the ends of each song felt more and more stark. There were some good riffs but a bit too heavy in places

I guess I'm on board that this is probably the best Metallica album. Still nothing they do will ever top the sheer joy that Some Kind of Monster has given me.

Again: not my kind of music. However, it was a lot more enjoyable to listen to than the Anthrax lp. There was none of that album's ridiculous, embarrassing eighties-ness here. Some parts of some songs I actually enjoyed. Also, I have no qualms about this lp being in the list. It is iconic and deservedly so.

I really don’t click with metal, but I can see why this is deeply respected

I enjoyed the rawness and epicness of some of the tracks, but a lot of it is too repetetive and long. His voice his really cool though. Best song: Master of Puppets/Orion Worst song: Leper Messiah Cover check: Dark and oppressive, good fit

Never been a huge fan of thrash, so not really for me. It's very technical and superbly made, and you can't deny the brilliance of songs like the title track, but it simply isn't my jam. Fave song on this listen: Master of Puppets

It's a bit of a classic and it hits pretty hard. Wouldn't say it's the kind of album that I would listen to all the time, although my teenage self loved pretty hard hitting music. The more classical music inspired bits are particularly cool, like the first breakdown solo you hear in the title track. Orion is pretty cool too. It's consistent, done well and the production is pretty much in your face. Sonically it's missing a bit of dynamics, I wonder if they did too much limiting/compression on the remaster? Sometimes the album sounds a bit crushed, there are a bit of dynamics missing.

Wouldn’t really listen again but I had fun, though it was dorky, and also gained an understanding.

This album is very consistent. For a death metal style it's probably what you are looking for.

top 3: - the things that should not be - welcome home (sanitarium) - master of puppets

Cool I guess, but I don't really like metal.

A classic!

These stars are all for Orion

This is definitely an album I should have known at least one song off of, however that is not the case. And now that I have listened to the entire album I cannot say that this is really my thing, apart from some of the cool guitar shredding. I am sure a few more listens would make me more of a fan, but ain't nobody got time for that! Favourites were Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Disposable Heroes, and ESPECIALLY Orion (best track on the album that single-handedly carries my rating to a 3, almost 4)

After listening to the album three times, they all started to sound the same. Master of Puppets is the obvious stand out in the album. Favorite songs: Master of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be

Metal-tastic

Metallica…is a silly band. Their lyrics are silly and often their hooks are silly. But that silliness is set to extremely rad and musically proficient and interesting thrash/speed metal instrumentation. I enjoyed most of this but none of it really struck me as essential. I was headbanging and giggling now and then from the silliness.

Album Art review - 10/10. Crosses great logo, red sky, puppet strings - no notes! Released in the middle of an incredible run of metal albums released by Metallica. Their initial body of work through the black album absolutely changed heavy metal music forever. Master of Puppets is a metal masterpiece. Chugging, ripping solos, speed, husky vocals, dystopic and miserable lyrics and melodies. Highlights, Battery, MOP, Welcome Home, Leper Messiah

Oh well! They work hard at it and you can't say they don't have a serious/furious theme going on.

Not as good as their previous album, but not bad

I have this on Vinyl. Good album.

Obviously Okay

1)orion 2)master of puppets

Album is definitely influential, but Metallica have better. Honestly this album is sorta dull.

Fine, very technically skilled but every song kinda sounds the same. Good get amped music though

A bit repetitive but some of Metallica’s best

Raw, loud, fasterrr

This might be ground breaking if I'd never heard a metal album before. The titular song is good

it alright. ride the lightning better

Dad- 5 Mom- 4 Mike- 8.5 Lori- 8 Michael- 8 Miles- 8 Cole- NA Avg- 6.92

Not my buzz but quality stuff

FAVO: Master of Puppets, Leper Messiah, Orion

When this album started to play it seemed the dog felt he was in trouble. He crouched low and looked startled and confused. The same for me. However, as the songs went on, I found that I began to appreciate the guitar runs and drumming. I never listened to Metallica. DId not like the yelling. Yet, I was reminded of music that my brothers listened to when I was young…Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Blue Oyster Cult. The song Damage had my favorite guitar and drum runs. Who knew that I could still enjoy some of this at age 65. lol.

I listened to the album and was not immediately compelled by the musical language. I found it repetitive and relentlessly pounding. Then I listened to Rock Virgin's reaction video to Master of Puppets on YouTube. It really helped me understand the background and intentions of the song. Her review helped me to hear the narrative and artistry in the music. I was originally going to score one star. I've increased it to three. I'm sure with a deeper appreciation of the musical language and additional listenings I would rate even higher.

Didn’t think I liked it and the I realised it influenced no Doubt a bunch of music I did like growing up, so it made sense then! 4/5

To be honest, I don't think it is the best thing they ever did; rather, I’d say it’s more important and influential for the genre of thrash metal, which is not exactly in my taste. There’s a lot of repetitive stuff, which is not what I like in metal. Still, every song has its own best moments, with some great riffs and vocal parts. But I can’t say that about Master of Puppets and Orion - these are just some of the best metal songs ever made.

Nota: 3.6

Mijn favoriet: Master of Puppets Niet helemaal mijn muziek. Orion was ook gewoon allen maar instrumenteel.

If this is your bag, I can imagine this is your bag. It is not really my bag. Interesting time signatures though.

I see how people went apeshit but it's seriously same-y

Bawwww bi bi bihhhh. Big, stupid riffs. Solid, angry chugs. Dumb fucking vocals. This is Metallica doing what they were born to do – cleverly packaged, accessible thrash. “Master of the Puppets” does enough to nod to its forebears in heavy music (witness the Carcass in “Disposable Heroes”) while never knowingly alienating a single of the dumb shits who needs their music to feel by men, for men (the cohort Metallica would, over the following decades, spend a regrettable amount of energy wooing; their lifestyle determining their artistic death style). A true monster of a thrash metal record. Master. MASTER.

Listened to this while playing Evacuation. I won. I was not allowed to listen to this kind of music growing up...but to be fair, I didn't feel like I was missing out on much. I wanted to like this more than I did...but it was just not my cup of tea. I really enjoyed the musicianship...but i truthfully would have liked it more with a different lead singer. The last two songs were definitely my favorites...but there were a couple songs I recognized earlier in the album.

I get the hype! But it’s not fully me

Not my favorite Metallica, but it was good to hear some different songs than ones from the radio

One of my least favorite Metallica records. Love ride the lighting and kill em all. This one is just boring to me, don’t hate it but not one that I come back to.

Ooof. Listened because I should. And it reaffirmed that I support other people appreciating guitar riffs. Makes me wonder if kids who wear Metallica t-shirts have ever listened to the music.

All the songs here are technically good, great playing, good melodies, memorable riffs... but as a whole thrash metal doesn't do a whole lot for me. I get a bit tired of it, and unfortunately the greatest sin of this album is that it extends each song. Each one is about 6 minutes, which I would say is a couple of minutes too long. Better to leave enough time to develop the song, and then end it with the listener wanting more. It is probably the best thrash metal album I've heard, and I'm left wondering whether I actually like this more than the Black Album (not thrash), and if perhaps I'm rating this a little low. But I was already familiar with this album, and I knew before today I considered it about 3 stars. I've found since I started writing proper reviews, I've been paying more attention and finding more to like about the albums, and been giving more 4 & 5 star reviews as a result, and I don't want to get too generous. So, we'll say it's a strong 3. The best song is probably the title track, with Disposable Heroes and Orion being other highlights. Disposable Heroes had the strongest lyrics of the album.

Not my piece of cake (heavy metal) but in a way a revelation for me.

Metallica, again?? I understand why people like Metallica. I felt pretty fired up listening to this album.

Always found Metallica a bit cringey and getting older hasn't helped much. It's not terrible but not for me

Not my fave. Some good cuts.

Honestly, never been too crazy about this one, probably because it’s sandwiched between their two actual best albums. Still great, Orion was much better than I remembered, definitely gonna have that song on repeat for a while. But the rest is just fine.

þetta er bara fínt. meira að segja mjög góðir sprettir. aðra? því ekki? 3,5.

Not my fav metal band, and not my fav album by them. Battery low key sucks! It kinda takes 3 songs for me to like a riff on this thing. There’s no way to know Cliff Burton was a good bassist considering this mix. 5 stars because every metal album I like more is biting this, but lowkey Metallica sucks.

That was a good listen, but not my favourite Metallica album. There was too much repetition on guitar riffs, but it is undeniable the talent and the unique sound they developed.

En tiedä mikä siinä on, mut nää kasarimetallin klassikot on musta yllättävän tylsän kuuloisia nykyään.

Classic! Prefer the later Metallica albums.

It is guitar hero music, it does not move me

It’s Metallica, you already know if you’re into it or not. I will say the Cthulhu song was pretty sick

One of my fave Metallica albums, tho haven't listened to it start to finish in a while. Still love it, classic Metallica.

Lemppari: Leper Messiah Vähiten lemppari: The thing that should not be

J'ai plus d'attachement émotif à ...And justice for all.

2* felt too harsh, but a 3 to positive...

Liked it, neutral 3/5

If I were to listen to Metal, they would be my go to. I heard someone say they’re The Beatles of Metal music. I think that’s spot on.

Enjoyed that way more than I thought I would. Could be a 3.5
