Thoroughly enjoyed it. Master of Puppets was great of course, but also really enjoyed Leper Messiah.

This isn't Metallica's best album but its still pretty high up on my list. Could the album be shorter, yes. Would I want it shorter, hell no!

I've never listened to a Metallica album before.... Not forgiven the Napster debacle. Hard to not do some head banging! Enjoyed it and it was pretty much as I would have expected it to be. Very dramatic.

Great album, Master of Puppet and Welcome Home ( Sanitarium) are master pieces, overall I love it but I think it is quite redundant between songs, and the riffs although great kind of sound similar. Solos always do the trick but we are missing something to get higher than a 4.25

Great Metallica album, good flow, but Battery is a hard listen

Man, I forgot how tight this band is. This album defined the heavy metal genre for the second half of the 80s. Though I don't feel like it's their best work, it really set the stage for the complete domination of the heavy metal scene. It was a staple of nearly every teenage boy in my high school. Brought back a lot of good (and bad) memories of high school for me! :)

Great metal bridge for all listeners

This is what Metallica should sound like. Fast, loud, driving and heart and soul in every chord. This was a good one, boys.

Never been the biggest Metallica fan, but i do appreciate their work. I rarely listen to them actively, but i do not mind if they're played and i've heard most of their discography in some capacity. This album is a solid listen even if you're not the most avid fan. It does not really have any filler or bad songs in it ( unless you consider Orion as such. I can see 8+ minute instrumental being too much for some). It is not my favourite Metallica album, but i could understand why you would choose it as such

Really solid album. It’s totally my style so I can’t go all the way to a five but really enjoyed the guitar work and the drums. I’d never listened to a Metallica album and was pleasantly surprised

A classic – heavily influential. I don't know if I've ever listened to this album in its entirety before now. Title track is obviously the most well-known, but don't sleep on "Welcome Home" and "Orion".

Good ol classic Metallica.

I had two cans of Monster today, biking back and forth between our old apartment and the new house, trying to get the last of our stuff out. Heart racing, music pumping, I mean, man, I got stuff DONE today. Was it the energy drink? Was it the riffs? I still didn't understand a single lyric because Hetfield sounds the way he sounds (not as bad here, but still). Whatever it was, I was a beast today. Brutal.

One of my favorite metal albums and my favorite Metallica albums. A little repetitive towards the end, but enough songs stood out to make up for it. 4/5

Is it Metallica's best? Possibly, yes, competing with Ride the Lightning.

While this may come as a surprise, I'm not a huge metal fan. I sure do like my heavy rock in general, but I had this album on cassette back in the mid-'80s and didn't bother getting it on CD when I was building my collection, so that says something. But damn, you have to love the scope of these tunes. Everything is majestic, tight, and while the songs wind and stray, this band is fine-tuning the art of bringing it back to repeated and recognizable themes on this album and there is a musicality and songcraft that sets them apart from their peers. And Lars on drums is pretty darned good, in addition to all the other noise this band makes. This was the album that started Metallica's acceptance into the mainstream, which, unbelievably, did not alienate the band's ultra-dedicated fans. They found a way to maintain the metal majesty and attitude and just kept sweeping more people into the fold by writing songs that resonate and brandishing an attitude that straddles the best of metal and "popular" music. Even the cliché lyrics — sanitarium! — ring as honest, and I've grown to appreciate the dry drum sounds and how every instrument sounds isolated from the others. It's a lot to take in as a whole, but this landmark album holds up, in my estimation. Master! Master!

Solid metal album

Classic Metallica. I listen to a lot of metal so I know just how influential they are. Solid album throughout. Great thrash. I just wish the bass was louder.

I was already a fan of Metallica before this, but it was nice to listen to some songs that aren't in their top 5. I would say that it requires a specific mood or moment. Pretty good all around, might listen to this whole album again if I don't know what else to listen to. Master of Puppets and Battery are definitely the banger outliers.

A really solid album from fairly early in Metallica's career. You can definitely hear the influence of Diamond Head and the twin guitars are reminiscent of UFO and Thin Lizzy. Standout tracks are the brilliant Master of Puppets and The Thing That Should Not Be. A few other tracks are a bit plodding, but overall a really good listen

You've got to be in the right mood for this album but this came up on a day that I was in that mood. Great album. Love the intensity of it.

Honest to God thought I could smash through a brick wall listening to this album. The bass and drums are heavy throughout and there’s a reason Metallica is notoriously one of the best in the heavy metal genre. Highly recommend listening to this when mowing the lawn- you will think you can mow 20 acres no problem.

This album gets you up in the morning.

5/13/2022 - ALBUM #107 Today's Album: "Master Of Puppets" by Metallica - This album was on that I have been excited to get to since it's popped up on the generator. I've always wanted to get into Metallica because many of my friends have raved about them, but never giving them a close listen caused me to write it all of as overblown noise and terrible vocals. Going into this album, I played it casually on a set of speakers while doing housework and really just found it mediocre and at many points fatiguing to listen to. However, giving this album a listen with headphones for the 2nd time was one of the most impressive experiences I have had with music to date. To start, the performances on this album are, with no bit of sarcasm whatsoever, perfect. I might not personally always love or be in the mood for some of the melodies here, but there isn't a single time where the song feels held back by the instrumentation and there are so many moments throughout the record where the playing is so next level it's hard for me to visualize how it was even recorded. The production also is killer, with all of the instruments feeling really well placed in the mix and the tightness of the guitar riffs and drumming really shine through in the recording. The whole record flows incredibly well, balancing the heavier songs with more accessible songwriting and I think the overall theming of the record is incredibly well done, comparing god and religion to some sort of puppet mastery in the title track and going on to call Jesus a "Lepper Messiah" in the track of the same name. The title track is easily one of the best of the album, with this really cool dropped beat at the end of every 4th measure and the solo at the end expertly implements their guitarwork into this really awkward time signature. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is also a fantastic track, with a great building atmosphere and some sonic aesthetics that I would never expect from Metallica, but holy cow do they just rock the shit out of this entire track. The soloing is always a highlight on all of these tracks but the ones in this track are particularly amazing. Orion is truly a perfect track in my opinion. The band really just lets loose and travels through so many different sonic landscapes, many of which involve some of the craziest guitarwork I have ever heard. Damage Inc. is an incredible closer to the album, with not only a great intro, but an insanely fast chugging groove as the track gets going and a really cool vocal delivery when whispering, "Damage Incorporated." The instrumental break at the end has some of the fastest guitar riffs I have heard and barely sound possible. It's a really chaotic and exciting way to end the album and although I don't love the way it ends off rhythmically, it is still a fantastic finisher. Overall, this album blew every expectation I had of it out of the water and has introduced me to the world of heavy metal in one of the best ways imaginable. There are a very small amount of moments where the heavier tone of the album gets a bit much for me, but when I really put myself in the mindset to listen to Metal music, it really gets easier to see how few and far between those moments really are. Give this album a listen if you have ever wanted to get into heavier music and have been waiting for an entry point that's worth it. This is my first time listening to Metallica! Their sound encompasses a range of metal subgenres and they switch back and forth between them making this a wild ride! I definitely hear the heavy metal drama of Sabbath. Then they get into more dark and thrashy sounds that I typically associate with metal. And the guitar solos! Some real melt your face shit! There’s even some psychedelic vibes on “Orion.” I dig the anti-war lyrics too. The album cover says a lot and songs like “Disposable Heroes” are really powerful. Highlights: “Battery,” “Master of Puppets,” “Disposable Heroes,” “Orion”

Lot of good tracks.

What do you get when the Swedish Chef cooks spaghetti? Pasta of Muppets. Hetfield, the ever-faster poet, pumps out the lyrics but I think it’s not quite on the same tier of some of their other albums.

It's textbook Metallica; massive energy, driving riffs, incredible harmonics, powerful drums, interesting and gritty to it's core. An album of classic tracks with Welcome Home, Battery and Master of Puppets. It's a solid album, maybe not their best album, but it's certainly Metallica being Metallica.

I prefer the more melodic slow parts as opposed to the crunchy fast strum parts but it’s still a classic. Master of Puppets the song is a masterpiece

4/5. Best when played loud! Metallica is one of the few metal bands that I like. These guys are awesome - glad I got a chance to see them in concert. This album is "before my time" and I only listened to it after some of their more mainstream albums came out. Master of Puppets, is definitely in the same realm as those others are. Standouts: Master of Puppets. The rest are really good too!

I’m not super into thrash metal, and some of the songs go on a little long, but there are some super interesting ideas and dynamic shifts that took me by surprise. Prime example was the middle section in “Master of Puppets”, just really compelling and epic guitar moves.

This is again a tragic case of personal bias. I like this album. I really, really like this album. The progression of Master of Puppets into The Thing That Should Not Be into Welcome Home is fantastic, bespoke song placemets. However. I'm simply not a fan of prolonged, repetetive instrumental sequences. They're good, they're impressive, they're just not my thing. Still, anything below 4/5 would be a robbery, in my book.

I'm in two minds here. On the one hand "Master Of Puppets" must have been a huge thing when it came out and definitely sounded fresh. The song "Master Of Puppets" is widely considered one of the best pieces of music in history (a well deserved title). But on the other hand I can't help myself from comparing it to later trash metal albums, and it pales in comparison. Apart from legendary "Master Of Puppets" and "Orion" I don't think there was much more standing out. Nevertheless, I consider it a classic.

I got so much work done today. What an album. I'm really into the instrumental. Best track: Orion

One of the most iconic metal albums. It's fast, aggressive, and here to make an impact. "Battery" opens with soft classical acoustic guitar before bursting into energy that carries all the way through the album.

What a surprisingly fun album. A couple of monster hits followed by some really solid metal. It even manages to avoid most of the cheesiness of some of the OTHER early metal bands (I'm looking at you Megadeath). Nothing to hate here and a lot to love.

One of those albums that sounds generic now because it was so groundbreaking that it got imitated for 20 years. Metallica are douchebags but this album is still a classic.

Metallica's best album, 4 to 5 stars, classic thrash metal from the late 80's

Arguably Metallica's best album in my memory, but when I listened to it today, I did not enjoy it as much. The first tracks, and especially the title song, are brilliant, but about halfway in I got a little bored with the sound, especially the wild guitar solos, which nowadays sound quite old-fashioned.

A brutal and athletic barrage of metal from the single most distinctive sounding metal band ever. Not a huge fan but I can appreciate the artistry here.

I never got deep into Metallica, and I'm past the age where thrash would be casual listening, but this is a really good album. Really, really good.

It's the best Metallica album I've listened to, enjoyed it. I'm not always a huge Metallica fan, perhaps because they're so highly rated I go into it expecting such great things. But it is nice, accessible metal with some good hooks

Why is it that I liked this album so much? What made it so listenable? This isn’t usually “my” genre. But I enjoyed the rhythm of it, and it made me move the whole time. I liked the use of lyrics as sound. I liked the lyrics as a message. I liked the vocals—hard but not ugly. I liked the guitars and percussion—so much hard energy but always rhythmic and musical. I can’t fully explain the difference with other albums, I just liked this one. I would play it again. Phrases I will steal: “the thing that should not be,” and “bow to leper messiah!” The title track really, really swings I think. And “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” will be a good drive-to-work anthem.

Good but I get a bit tired of it. Needs to be shuffled into other music.

This was my first real metal album - had it on tape - and I think still holds up. Battery is just a great opener and I don't think the rest of the songs every let me down. Sanitarium is also that mix of heavy and ridiculous that I just love.

It was a good listen, but I find this album somewhat overrated within the metal community. It's good, especially in terms of musicianship. But I find the songwriting somewhat bland. I do like Welcome Home (Sanitarium) a lot and always have. But on the whole I find the album just good and not at all the masterpiece many metal fans make it out to be.

Masters of their Craft. This music makes me want to lift weights, fight, drink, and end up at a tattoo parlor getting inked on my back with a picture of Zeus throwing a lightning bolt into the eyes of a jet black panther.

The Thing that Should Not Be and Sanitarium are some of the best hard rock/metal tracks ever. Solid album, though slightly less interesting on the back half.

While I’m not the punk I was in high school who listened to this album a thousand times in my friends Camaro I really enjoyed this trip back to hear this again.

I'm not interested in Thrash Metal, but I guess this is fine...

I've looked back at my metal reviews from this list, including one other Metallica album, '...And Justice for All'. This one doesn't really move the needle of my opinion at all. Some deliciously crunchy riffs, but the whole speed metal thing just feels too frantic, too rushed for me to settle in and enjoy it. The track I enjoyed the most is an instrumental, 'Orion.' I'll bang my head with the best of them, but Metallica, with few exceptions, doesn't make me want to bang on anything.

I could probably just repost my review of Megadeth from a couple days ago. Metal is just not something I've ever gotten into. I will say listening to this one was a far cry better than that pompous double live with full orchestra crap we listened to a while back.

I didn’t like this one as much as the later, self-titled album. This one is noisier and less melodic

This is the record that showed us thrash metal can actually be music too, rather than just noise. Metallica was one of the few bands that went beyond just the quest for noise for noise's sake. Does that mean they deserve FOUR albums on any list of 1001 albums I must hear before I die. I don't think so. Two actually seems like a more reasonable number, in my opinion (especially on a list that needs room for at LEAST one album from a completely shut out Warren Zevon!). But THIS particular album would certainly be one of them.

Listened while running. First half had a relly good vibe for it.

Another day on the 1,001 albums challenge. I can’t rate it too lowly because it contains some really sick guitar solos that even if this isn’t really my favorite genre I have to admit it’s very good. Overall, not a bad album and kept me locked in throughout my listening experience.

A collection of fun thrashy anthems. I think as I get older, I find James Hetfeld's voice and the "house" sound of Metallica more grating than I did when I was younger. The most interesting stuff comes when they deviate from it. Orion is the easy highlight of the album and it has a Megadeth quality to it. Master of Puppets is a classic for a reason but I really find the second half of the song is what makes is stand out. I only listened through the album once so I'm happy to revisit once I give it a few more listens on the bigger sound system.

Spotify, I don't want to listen to the 10-hour remastered deluxe box set. Anyway I think I listened to the entirety of this album. Embarrassingly for me because I call myself a music nerd, Metallica has been a bit of a blind spot. I know the titular Master of Puppets and enjoy it for what it is. Older metal historically has never been my favorite but I'm working on appreciating and understanding it for what it is. The experience of listening to this album was about what I expected. Really heavy and shreddy guitar and signature Metallica vocals throughout. It's very chopped and unc and just not my favorite thing. I'm not sure why. I understand that this record is massively influential and is so similar to the modern punk and rock I listen to in many ways but DANG it just feels like it drones on and it all sounds the same to me. Maybe they would differentiate themselves after a handful of listens, but not on initial listen. I feel uncultured not loving this album, but I just don't. The over the top 80's corny lyrics and sounds didn't age well for me as someone who didn't grow up with or around Metallica in my life. Overall, appreciate this record and Metallica for what it is but it doesn't really do it for me. I wish I liked it more because I know that most of my favorite music wouldn't be what it is without Master of Puppets and Metallica as a whole. I wouldn't go out of my way to turn it off, but I wouldn't go out of my way to turn it on either.

I've never been able to get into this album the way other folks have. I dig the second side way more than the first, but I'd still rather listen to Lightning. Is this more influential than their other thrash-era stuff? Couldn't say, but it's definitely more popular.

Some classic songs, but not a classic album

I wish this was harder and faster. No weepy stuff in the beginning or middle, less cinematicness. But some good thrashing on here nonetheless.

I don't dislike it, but it's not my jam. Metallica are great, undeniably, but it's not the music I listen to so I can't judge it right. Good, but not for me.

An enjoyable if slightly schmaltzy country album, with some instrumental and melodic strands that anticipate the likes of Johnny Cash and Gram Parsons.

1. Battery – Cool acoustic intro, almost flamenco-like. Awesome introduction of the electric guitars. This sounds pretty fun to learn on guitar. So far sounds like a standard Metallica song – high school weight room jamz. It’s clear how obviously they influenced so many bands that came after them musically. No clue what the lead singer is saying other than ‘Battery.’ Spotify Ad Break Thoughts: Damn, this probably hurts your wrists a lot. This style of guitar seems super taxing. Would also love to learn some of these solos to gain a little speed. An hour of this seems absolutely exhausting to play. 2. Master of Puppets – Awwwww helllll yeah. Sick intro riffs. Is this the song from Stranger Things? I think it’s the song from Stranger Things. Sick chuggy vibes and riffs, then opens up into a completely different vibe with either dueling guitars or octaver pedal. There are so many cool riffs in this song. NOTE: COME BACK AND LEARN THE THEORY ON THIS SONG. There are so many distinct parts of this song, it reminds me of Bohemian Rhapsody or Paranoid Android kind of. 3. The Thing That Should Not Be – What kind of name is this haha. Riff feels pretty standard Metallica. The lyrics sound like a campfire story. This song feels like the cliché of a Metallica song, formulaic. This one kind of bored me. 4. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) – Opens up with a nice guitar solo, feels a bit slower and more dramatic than the last 3 songs. The cadence of ‘Sanitarium’ in the chorus is like exactly like how they use ‘Battery’ and ‘Obey your Master’ haha. The guitar parts are kind of neat, I like the reverby-tremolo/chorus arpeggio thing that carries the verses. I like this song! 5. Disposable Heroes – Yes, this is Metallica. Lyrics are a commentary against the war machine. A heavy metal Born in the USA. This one goes on a bit long. Some parts feel like an angrier Flight of the Bumblebee. Spotify Ad Break Thoughts: I don’t think all of these songs need to be 6+ minutes, and follow pretty similar formulas. Some of the guitar solos and lead parts are really neat. The lyrics don’t do much for me, and there’s a ton of guitar chugging. Good album so far, for what it is. 6. Leper Messiah – This feels kind of like the same song as Disposable Heroes except regarding the corrupting influence of religion rather than a warhawk-ish government. These two songs feel like filler. Still probably super fun to play on guitar. 7. Orion – Long, awesome instrumental intro. Is this whole thing instrumental? The dueling guitar part (or just octave pedal?) halfway through when it slows down is really interesting and fun. This might be my favorite on the album so far. 8. Damage Inc. – Cool reverse delay at the beginning. Back to marchy-chugging. Pretty standard Metallica track here. Album Highs: Orion Master of Puppets Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Album Lows: Disposable Heroes Leper Messiah Final Thoughts: This album is tough to rank because it’s only the second one of the challenge and comes after Cat Stevens…kind of the polar opposite. Some of the instrumentals are amazing, but there’s also very little musical diversity. The songs all kind of sound similar and follow a similar formula, which, if you want nothing but metal, you got it! I’m less of a metal guy, so this probably ranks below Cat Stevens for the sole reason that there would be fewer times I’d throw this on, but it’s kind of a similar record to me in that there are a few notable highs, notable lows, and some boring stuff in the middle. I think the highs of Tea for the Tillerman, for me, are higher. That all being said, there’s some rad stuff on this record and I get why it’s highly ranked by a lot of people, especially guitar players. I’d love to learn some of these riffs.

The first half of this album is WICKED! The second half is very hit or miss.

For the second time on this list, a metal album served as the soundtrack to me cooking a meal for when Lilith got home from work; this time, it was roasted broccoli, dill potatoes, and Dijon chicken. My first impression of this album was not a promising one. The first song immediately started making the usual musical choices which bother me in metal songs, where most of the instrumental parts (specifically the drums) just hammer too fast to feel like I can get a grasp on them. It feels like there's no sense of progression to them, reaching the point of white noise, pretty quickly. I was anticipating another full album of this style, and thus was pleasantly surprised when the title track started to change up the drums and introduce some variety in the tempo. I thought this would be a temporary reprieve from the initial white noise, but the album stayed in that new groove for a fair amount of its remaining runtime. There are definitely still quite a few songs which deal in that style of metal which I find personally uninteresting, but in comparison to other Metallica albums I've heard, Master of Puppets leans way more into the version of metal which I enjoy: heavier, slower, and more intimidating instrumentation. This album also has way more going on thematically and lyrically than the Black album did, serving as an explicitly anti-war album with a lot of depth in its subject matter. It's also fun to see that not even Metallica are immune to the Eldritch horror fandom which grips a lot of metal acts; they're huge Cthulhu nerds just like the rest of them, and I find that incredibly endearing and interesting. I thought I had Metallica clocked, but they managed to surprise me quite a bit with this album, and I'm very glad that they did so. There are still moments I didn't click with, but the highs were so much higher. Highlights: Master of Puppets, The Thing That Should Not Be, Leper Messiah, Orion

Metallica at their most Metallica…? If you’re a fan of their stuff, this probably ranks highly, if you’re not a fan, this probably won’t win you over. Personally, I have always been a bit indifferent to them, not keen on Hetfield’s growl, sometimes finding their riffing repetitive and overlong, but at the same time, I can respect them as masters of what they do and inspiration for others that came later. Not sure I had listened to this as a whole previously, but I think I had heard all the tracks at various points.

Why can't more metal bands be like Metallica? Just the absolute right amount of abrasive, the singer can actually sing but still has a fearsome growl, the compositions are ambitious, relatively rythymically varied and Kirk Hammett's shredding has at least some basis in classical theory. Very listenable.

IDK, a lot of love for this one and most of it just washes over me. Maybe the victim of a million copycats. Some great shredding here, but I think a couple of times Lars couldn't keep up with the timing so it sounded off. Master of Puppets the song is an all timer, but the Metallica rhythm guitar sound and James' voice always feel a bit off for me. The Black album is definitely better.

I would give it a 3.5 if I could, I like thrash and I think there is some really good and iconic stuff in master of puppets but it loses points for being a bit unfun and sounding like mud tbh

Another victim of the five-point rating scale. This is better than a three, but a four seems like too much. Hmmm... Loved it when I was 12. It just feels so bloated and overwritten listening to it 30+ years later. I'll save the 4 for Ride The Lightning. Oh wait, that's not on the list??? Shameful.

Thrashing good time.

I'm sure I've listened through this album before but most of the tracks except the highlights aren't that familiar to me. Master of Puppets and Welcome Home (Sanitarium) are the best tracks off the album and the only ones I'd really consider spinning up again, even if Master of Puppets runs a little long for me. The rest falls right in line with what I expect from an early Metallica album, crunchy chun-chun guitar interspersed with Hetfield yelling words and the world's weakest drumming behind it all doing nothing at all but keeping time. I still think Lars is a mediocre drummer at best (he gets better on later albums but still isn't creative as his peers). I thought the guitar work on Orion was pretty decent.

Thrash metal isn't my thing, but I know there are a ton of folks that love it, and this album more or less defined it. The performances are strong and tight, and unlike something like the Slayer album I reviewed earlier, the lyrics are actually mostly comprehensible and actually have something to say. And "Orion" stands out as proof that the band can do more than just thrash. Not something I'd seek out to listen to, but a great exemplar of its genre.

My final thoughts can sort of be summed up as "Eh?" I think. There's some things I really like here, good guitar riffs and drums, some songs I like more than others. But overall this is not an album I want to be listening to frequently.

I can appreciate how good the album is from an unpersonal opinion, the band sre incredible muscions. the melodies and talent in playing the instruments are very good. The songs are also lengthy wich is great. However it's not my music taste at all, i couldnt casualy listen at the bus stop for me. Its not somthing I would listen to unless I was drunk at a gig. So it's about a 6.5/10

When it comes to thrash metal, Metallica has been the most successful band to bring it home. I am not a huge metal guy but I appreciate the musical skills involved. I like Metallica and I think they have been able to make the genre more listenable. Master of Puppets may not be their best album, but it did echo across the industry. Dark themes of war/PTSD with heavy guitar and drums are common for the band and Hetfield has the perfect delivery. This record deserves a spot for the impact it had and I'm betting we get at least one more from them...2.62 stars.

Even if I'm not the biggest thrash metal fan it's hard to deny that Metallica are masters of their craft and deservedly the most cited and influential band. They carved out their lane, honed in their sound and were able to really revolutionize and popularize the genre by making it more appealing to the masses. Master of Puppets is a perfect example of this as it is full of the cliches that you see elsewhere in the genre, yet nobody else has been able to match anywhere close to their popularity. While I don't regularly go to Metallica I can't deny that in small doses I enjoy them. They are really effective at walking the fine line between the melodic sounds and extremely skilled instrumental work. Hetfield's vocals are powerful and effective without diving into demon-wretch status that turns me off otherwise. While Metallica is never listed as one my favorites I also don't go out of my way to turn them off when I run into them. I can't see any argument against Metallica appearing on almost any list. 2.99 stars

Orion actually made me stop doing what I was doing, which was not really Listening to the album... But that's only enough to bring it up to a 3 for me. I understand that this album is important to others, but it just doesn't do it for me. I can only Listen to a couple Metallica songs before I get bored. Oh and I should probably use the word douche canoe in here somewhere... Because of the Napster drama and all.

My third favorite in the discography. This stuff was heavy for its time for sure. SoCal heavy metal through and through. Right on the cusp of switching to that butt rock black album nonsense. But, bottle it up and keep it in the 80s. Metal became so much more than this and as a result is much more niche and sounds alot better.

What was initially an eye roll at today’s album pick immediately became appreciation as I delved back into what was long forgotten in my mind, the world of Metallica. A memory of seeing them back when I was a teenager with my friends and feeling an electric atmosphere. Are those days behind us? Maybe I haven’t given up on metal yet. Melodic, anthems, head bangers, a good range of crescendo and slower tracks.

Metallica is a great band and Metal has actually been my highest rated genre so far in this countdown. But I wasn't amazed by this. Certainly, the title track is a cool song. I also liked Orion. Instrumentals don't bother me at all, and I would encourage anyone who likes that track to go check out Joe Satriani's catalog, as it is a lot like this song but more melodic and with (much) better guitar work. Beyond this, the only other track that I thought was very good on this was Welcome Home (Sanitarium). It has a bit of that One feel to it. The rest of this was very average to me, and this record pales in comparison to And Justice For All or the Black Album. 3 stars.

What do you say about a band you don’t like - who influenced a bunch of bands you DO like and defined a whole genre - that you haven’t already said three times in reviews of their other records? This is a technically well made album and you can tell they put effort into making it... but reading the wikipedia article paints it as a kinda try-hardy effort to win over critics and gain some more popular success. That sounds exactly like something Metallica would do and I don't love it. This album and I both turn 40 this spring. With just two days to spare, I appreciate the album generator unburdening me of all the Metallica albums before my next decade begins.

I understand why it's a classic - it's timeless and it's clear to see how it's referenced as an influence even today. On a personal level, I found it to be a little repetitive and while there wasn't a song I necessarily didn't like, I don't think this is an album that I will find myself wanting to revisit. (as of right now my rating is 3.5/5)

Full Album Thoughts: Album Rating: 2.88 (B) I am down with the Trudgemank, but this is no Taranchula's hit "Moving Very Slowly". This suddenly makes Infest The Rats Nest make more sense. This is, as I say elsewhere, "Easy Listening Heavy Metal", nothing is offensive, the production is clean and crisp, no parts are actively harmful to listen to... but it does tend to blend together. You hear one song, you kinda hear them all? Which is not to say there arent stand outs! I just get tired by the end of the album. I am actually going to give it a 3 star, as its Fine To Listen To In Full... As Background Zone Out Music. Track Thoughts: "Battery" B+ Okay so I never listened to Metallica, so I had no idea what to expect, I was not prepared for Baroque and or Spanish Guitar intro. Fast == Gooder is not always true, as there are slower breakdowns in here. The tones of the guitar+drums+bass, while muddy and heavy on the low end, actually are still mixed to where they still stand out. "Master of Puppets" A- Hello E1M1. This escaped containment, but I cant say I've ever listened to it in full? Like, legitimately, I am more confused that this is NOT E1M1 exactly and so hearing it feels akin to a cover/re-interpretation? Why the sudden "mastar" lower pitch pirate echo, and then we have this really beautiful classical breakdown... I am getting Castlevania vibes here too. The back half of this song is actually killer, better then the Famous Riff part. Both are good in their own right, but one is an S tier song (the later half of an 8 minute performance of virtuosity) and the first half is Iconic. "The Thing That Should Not Be" B+ I distorted swimmy detuned guitar? And then back to the chugga chuggas... I am most intrigued and find my enjoyment the highest when NOT being bludgeoned (or battered eh) by the chugs. So this is just proto-Enter Sandman. Like its not FAIR that I go "Oh 'The Thing That Should Not Be' is just a proto version of Enter Sandman" but that is all my brain can think and then I spend the whole song going "I should just be listening to Enter Sandman" instead of artistically engaging with the piece as is. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" A+ I keep getting my hopes up by the intro to these songs that they are going to have a different pallet to paint from. And this time I wasnt disappointed. I love this tone. It has a smooth transition to the heavier chorus briefly, and then we get back to this again, soaring guitar solo showing off the more melodic composition, rather then the percussive chugging. I dont know if I can claim ANY Metallica song is a deep cut, but this tail end of side one is like, the album highlight so far! "Disposable Heroes" C+ What is the version of "Easy Listening Heavy Metal"? Idk why I feel like this music is just mellowing me out. Very regular rhythmic structures coming at you fast, with enough variation to keep you interested in different phrases, if not individual bars? Now, this song starts to lose me as its lack of melodic variance, its very One Note for the chorus/verse, even if the solo is very beautiful (though a criticism of "its just scales played fast" is not UNFAIR). Also, while the message "War Is Hell" is important, I am not sure the emphasis is on WHY this is bad, just "this is bad" and so also "well we are wanting to write music about hell... this is hell on earth... lets just... take this iconography then" just kinda falls flat FOR ME. And you know what, its just too long. I said it. Sue me. "Leper Messiah" C+ Everything I said about the musical structure in Disposable Heroes holds true here, points off for lack of as sweeping a guitar solo, points... well do I add points for being only 6 minutes as opposed to 8? What is my time worth? Oh no hold on, there was a brief guitar solo that literally did sweep the scales. Okay so maybe we just keep this also at a C+ as an also ran? "Orion" (instrumental) C This is marked as an instrumental. I know I havent spoken much about the Shout Singing yet. I dont mind it actually, as it helps cut through the low end heavy production. But I have so far enjoyed the actual Song Writing when they have given it the focus, rather than the rhythmic chugging. So I had high hopes for this. What I got was... Trogdor the Burninator? aaaand ive checked out. Im sorry. This instrumental did nothing for me. "Damage, Inc." C Mercifully short. The album drags. I am now done.

Unpopular opinion. This record is actually not very good. Kill em All was a better record as the incorporation of punk influences was better realized. I get that this is recognized as the defining moment for thrash. I appreciate the political slant of the lyrics. It’s just that the songs are almost prog length and the sound is kinda thin to be honest. 1986 was a great year for punk and metal. Dead Kennedys released Bedtime For Democracy, Agnostic Front released Age of Quarrel which is a markedly better album than Master of Puppets. Agnostic Front - Cause For Alarm mines similar territory and then Big Black released Atomizer. So when I start stacking up Master of Puppets against those records it doesn’t. I know that there are several other great records that were released that year that I’ve omitted but I guess that’s the point. When the Metallica record is just part of the pack, it really is just average. I get it. This is when they started to blow up and become mainstream popular. They were loud, melodic, but not scary. And that is the secret. They were no longer scary. They played these long ass tunes and while admittedly they are enjoyable they are not earthshaking bone rattling in your face metal massacre type songs. There is even an instrumental. Nope. Just average. 3/5

Well, this list is off to a fun start! I haven't thought much of Metallica since my peak classic rock years as a teenager, and even then I only liked Metallica's singers. I tend to believe that people whose favourite band is Metallica are either 13 or 45 - either they've just gotten into harder-edged music or they were around for their peak years. For me, this is too catch-all as metal music to really pique my interest. Despite the thrash-metal underpinning, this album is already trending in a more accessible, generic "heavy metal" format in the vein of Judas Priest around this same era, but while Priest made the heaviest album of their careers by the dawn of the new decade, Metallica had firmly veered in a more commercial direction. Master of Puppets is their definitive statement because it's situated right at the intersection of their genuine thrash roots and the heavy rock direction they would take from the 1991 self-titled onward. This album is carried by Hammett's soloing, which take up the bulk of the runtime. Most of it is surprisingly transient as there isn't enough substance to make these songs into favourites without repeat listens. This was fine; Metallica might be more of a "hits band" than an "album band" for me.

This was my first time sitting down and listening to this genre. I have to say that it really just isn't for me... The instrumentation, the vocals, the production - really well executed, but just not my kind of music. I feel like, as a singer, I just prefer a melody I can follow within a different style. That, again, is not to say that this isn't a good album. I can see why it is as big as it is amongst fans, and I can see why this album was detrimental to the development of this style of music moving forward, but it's just not for me. They also felt a bit too long for my liking. Stand-outs: Master Of Puppets Battery

Alright. Didn’t really buy into the many 8 minute songs- felt a bit too long. Not as good as the black album in my opinion, just overall quality wise.

I am no Metallica super fan, but there musicianship and arrangement make it understandable that they brought metal to the mainstream.

I liked this more than the Black Album, but not by much.
