Good
Not my cup of tea, but pretty neat.
This is a good, solid representation of what Metallica is. It shows of their technical complexity compared to other thrash metal bands of that time. The lyrical themes were right up my alley and had excellent production quality. If you, like me bought the Black Album as your gateway into the Metallica-verse, this would be a good next step, less polished for mass appeal perhaps but more authentic.
Well made album. I see why people like them but I’m just not in love with the genre. I appreciate how incredibly talented they are though. Time signature changes, solos, drums, etc.
Classic metal
Metallica is so boring
Not my cup of tea at 0800 on a Monday lol
Classic thrash but just doesn’t do much more me
Epic I don’t think I’m a Metallica guy 2.5
Not as Epic as the Black Album, but I appreciated the instrumentation.
Not metallica's best but some bangers
i've always been fond of orion
Feels like a heavy metal jam band. Lots of drum solos and guitar riffs. The album is angry and aggressive--gets you pumped up, but I felt like a lot of songs just rolled into each other without much distinction. Still hard.
Cool album. Got Rush vibes in some of the songs, but overall some seriously good metallic deliciousness
Not my usual listening but enjoyed the listen. Ultimately a little too samey for me which knocked it down a star and made it difficult to pick out an individual track
You know what….. not as bad as I was thinking it would be.
Like 2 songs. Not their best album. Seemed repetitive.
Rawk! I do remember this being more interesting
Punchy start! Can see why impressionable teenage men would lap this stuff up. “Battery”, “master of puppets” and “disposable heroes” were the standouts for me.
Whilst I get the impact Metallica have had, and I certainly appreciate how loud and heavy this album is, I felt like too many of these songs run a bit too long. Means they feel more like tests of endurance than thrilling thrash metal sprints.
So so
I enjoyed my listen! Metal songs tend to be little bit too long for my usual taste in casual listening, but I really enjoyed the songs that progressed into 2-3 distinct sounds as they played out. The second half of the album was stronger to me, I really enjoyed disposable heroes and Orion.
One of the best thrash albums with some classic tracks.
Spotify, I don't want to listen to the 10-hour remastered deluxe box set. Anyway I think I listened to the entirety of this album. Embarrassingly for me because I call myself a music nerd, Metallica has been a bit of a blind spot. I know the titular Master of Puppets and enjoy it for what it is. Older metal historically has never been my favorite but I'm working on appreciating and understanding it for what it is. The experience of listening to this album was about what I expected. Really heavy and shreddy guitar and signature Metallica vocals throughout. It's very chopped and unc and just not my favorite thing. I'm not sure why. I understand that this record is massively influential and is so similar to the modern punk and rock I listen to in many ways but DAMN it just feels like it drones on and it all sounds the same to me. Maybe they would differentiate themselves after a handful of listens, but not on initial listen. I feel uncultured not loving this album, but I just don't. The over the top 80's corny lyrics and sounds didn't age well for me as someone who didn't grow up with or around Metallica in my life. Overall, appreciate this record and Metallica for what it is but it doesn't really do it for me. I wish I liked it more because I know that most of my favorite music wouldn't be what it is without Master of Puppets and Metallica as a whole. I wouldn't go out of my way to turn it off, but I wouldn't go out of my way to turn it on either. 3/5.
First time listening to Metallica. Orion. I get it. The rest is ok.
This is a solid bit of thrash metal but I don’t think it’s their best work. It’s all personal preference but I like the more theatrical songs like on Ride the Lightning whereas this is more pure heavy metal. But overall I still enjoyed it.
I feel like this would be the best music ever if I were listening to it in a dark venue with a cold beer. But through my headphones at my desk job, it was just okay. Long songs. Great guitar solos.
It's Metallica! (33 known/71 new)
En classic. Litt kjedelig. De har absolutt bedre plater.
Loud and brings the energy. Feel like I'd grow to love this one a lot with another 3-4 listens
Take one part crunchy power cords, one part progressive rock style synchronized bass and drums and one part growling vocals and go. Repeat 7 times. Throw in one song using the same formula less vocals (gotta give those pipes a break, right James?). Put it all together and you have this album. Good album for those thrash metals fans. Me? I’m still bitter than they helped to kill Napster (talking to you, Lars). Viva la Spotify 🙄
I would give it a 3.5. It's not my favourite Metallica album, but does have some standout tracks. Not a fan of the drum production though. It's very hollow.
Liked a few songs and a lot of the solos, but I just can't get into Hetfield's vocal style.
4/5
Every time I listen to heavy metal it just sounds like a parody of itself. This one was much better than the last Metallica album I listened to, ...And Justice For All. Orion was the best track. That says it all with how I regard their lyrics.
A good, but typical Metal album from the 80's.
Reasonable but too similar throughout. There are a few quieter guitar moments that sounded pretty good and I think more focus on them would be a better album - less time spent at 100% volume. Favourite track: Master of Puppets, of course.
Not the genre for me, especially not keen on this type of vocals but can appreciate the artistry in this. The guitar absolutely slaps! 🔥🎸🤘 Enjoyed listening more than I thought I would but probably won't be coming back to this.
First Metallica. I'm always surprised by how pro-metal this site is, though I guess it makes sense. You have to be pretty hardcore to spend an ungodly amount of time listening to music. I, admittedly, am a basic bitch. A medium plebeian. I like this album way more than the other metal albums I have listened to through this site, so much so that this album is able to get away with some otherwise egregious track lengths. In a surprise inverse when compared to the pitfalls of albums from other genres, the vocals of metal albums are usually good across the board. It's the instrumentals that usually fail at carrying the manic energy of metal across the finish line. This album is fortunately a jack of both trades. What mainly bores me with metal are long interludes where nothing happens and the restrictive nature of mile-a-minute guitar hooks, though this album makes the genius decision to have instant transitions between it's many segues and oodles of creative guitar sequences. "Battery" is fantastic. Some great leading guitars satisfyingly guide the song to a climatic guitar riff. "Master of Puppets" is iconic - at least, I assume so as I have never listened to the song in my life. "Disposable Heroes" is a great tune carried by some clever songwriting. Probably the best on the album. Coin of indecision time. I appreciate this album without properly liking it and I don't think there's room for that opinion to change. I actually used my old coin of indecision to buy a bag of chips because I had become too decisive over the past few albums. Brb gonna rob a bank. Back on house arrest. The feds thought they got one over me, though they never realised that I stole millions of dollars and maimed multiple bankers to throw them off the scent of the single coin that I had carefully shoved up my ass. Alright, let's go. Heads is a 4 and tails is a 3. Tails. Better luck next time, bubby.
fire
This helped me get out my anger issues.
very good, peak of my music taste however, very repetitive, but that might js be metallica’s sound favs: leper messiah, the thing that should not be least fav: master of puppets (biased)
god these songs are long, favourite is "welcome home (sanitarium)" honestly, liked it less than i thought i would, got a bit bored, was all very same-y. but also like will probably be better than many albums we get
Best one so far, enjoyed it. 3.8/5
The title song is fantastic, the rest was fine.
Rough and hard around the edges. These guys know what they are doing, and I like it quite a bit.
Eh. I like Metallica songs with more melody so this specific album wasn’t really for me
Forgot how much I like Orion.
I've heard enough of this album (probably 2/3 of it) to go with a pretty solid 3 for me. I'm not sure hugest fan of the vocals but it certainly was undeniably influential.
6/10 Fine but not very interesting
I came into this expecting to love this album. I generally enjoy Metallica, but... this one just felt lacking to me. It was fine, it wasn't bad, I won't say it's not a fine album. But... it just doesn't really stand out much in their catelog for me.
Time and place album if you are ripping 100 miles an hr in a fire bird look no further.
No es mi género, pero es el álbum que me gustaría jugar en guitar hero
'Thrash Metal' wasn't a genre I was particularly fond of in period. Friends liked it so I had considerable exposure to it, sometimes unwillingly. My opinion hasn't really changed, it's all a bit overblown and lacks sophistication. There is an awkward flow to several of the tracks, 'not really one car, three cars from different manufacturers welded together'. All that said, I thought this was OK. 'Orion' was the track I enjoyed most. It gets my 3/5 'OK' rating, which isn't bad for a musical style I don't particularly like.
Very masterful.. would like the half star option
Great album I won’t lie, a bit of a snooze at the start but towards the end? Straight fire
It’s Metallica. Haha. Great in small doses, but I think I’ll always have a hard time focusing with a whole album.
8 Songs, 54 minutes Metal. Master of puppets and orion
God I hate Hetfield's vocals
The title song is really good, but I'm just not interested in metal music enough to enjoy this.
Started strong but kinda falls off and still not my favorite era of Metallica. Weak 3
Too heavy for my tastes with a frenetic rhythm guitar that tends to match an impressive high rpm drum beat. The effect of this is a wall of noise that makes a repetitive, uninteresting ear assault. I enjoyed the intro of most songs but found I lost interest after the first drop. Welcome Home (sanitarium) is a pleasant mid-album interlude and there are a few great moments in Orion which I really enjoyed. Also, there are killer guitar solos throughout. In general, highly skilled musicians creating a sound that I don't particularly enjoy. The album finishes with the alluring intro of Damage Inc, luring you into the false sense of security before giving way to the ear pounding which I guess is "Thrash metal" - not a fan.
6/10.
I am not fond of heavy metal in general, but I grew up in the 80s, so I have some nostalgia. I did listen to Metallica from Master of Puppets through the Black Album and liked them then- they're still in my iTunes library. Going back to Master of Puppets now- it sounds sort of monochromatic and dry- and like every song is at least two minutes longer than it has to be. there are some good moments thorughout, but it is a real chore to listen to. I'm afraid to go back to And Justice for All now... it was my favorite back in the day...
My favourite from the three Metallica ones I’ve got so far (justice and black), falls just below a 4 for me only really because I’m not the biggest fan of thrash metal or even Hetfields voice to an extent, instrumental and battery were the highlights for me
My head hurts from all the banging…and not in a good way or a bad way. I get it, it’s Metallica.
Good. But dang, it's long.
Not my cup of tea, but well done
i just don’t love heavy metal. it’s obviously good and a legendary album, but it’s not really for me
Historically significant. The best thrash metal album? The 80s was a great time for music.
Certainly enjoyable but not my brand of metal. Master of Puppets becoming a huge hit with that length + time signature is truly baffling to me. I think I'd much rather listen to a metal-core or nu-metal album, but I don't mind this! Fun! Orion is the definite stand out of the bunch.
It’s whatever
2.5
This had more ballads than I remember, probably the weakest of their big three albums (lightning, puppets, justice). Still a solid album with one of the best title tracks in all of rock music.
Amazing musicians playing music that’s not really for me, but I bet it was impressive to record
Couldn't finish. Far too aggressive for absolutely no reason. Master of Puppets was the only one I was familiar with and I kind of liked it, then got sick of it... Then it changed up and I thought I might like it, before it descended back into hell. Just stinks of cans of monster, stale fart ridden furniture and someone who is so good at guitar hero that it could only be a detriment to their social life. But I did often find myself thinking 'to be fair thats fucking sick' when the drums were smashing and the electric guitar was all in sync well. I liked that and can appreciate the talent in it
[6/10]
Not my jam, but there is a time and place.
sanitarium orion ok i like those songs
Hard rocking album, some great tracks on here but not entirely to my personal taste.
I realised from this I don’t like Metallica
not bad there are a few standouts but one too many lack in sound diversity
In my opinion, Metallica never made a truly great album. Master of Puppets has some very strong tracks, but as a whole, it doesn’t fully convince me when listening to it back-to-back. Moreover, the sound feels a bit weak to me, and I prefer listening to live versions of the songs, where the band sounds much fuller. The real masterpiece on this album is Orion, and it’s a tragedy that the band lost Cliff Burton shortly after recording it.
Yeah yeah yeah I love it but it's so overplayed now, haha
Now I know that this is one of the all-time metal classic albums, and inspired hundred of bands to pick up guitars and try something similar. It leaves me stone cold. OK, there's a good variety, with Metallica trying power ballads, instrumentals as well as straight up heavy rock. But, it just seems too Spinal Tap-py for me.
Good for their genre
Cool, but not for me. Too sad, because I'm an Iron Maiden guy.
Classic
I don't like thrashy Metallica as much as after the black album Metallica but this goes alright.
Metallica- Master of Puppets Before listening- growing up, my friends loved Metallica. I dug a few of the singles, but I have never sought out anything further. It’s hard to be a sports fan and not know Enter Sandman or For Whom the Bell Tolls. I know Master of Puppets and Sanitarium. I have no idea what will be on this album, but I am interested. Okay- on this track list I have heard OF the song Orion. A friend in college was explaining music to me, and explained that Orion was essentially a classical song performed by guitars. Battery- I can hear the classical music in the intro Master of Puppets- wow, at least two movements for this song- the passing in the medium is an unexpected transition The Thing That Should Not Be Welcome Home (Sanitarium)- I think this is the best song on the album Disposable Heroes Leper Messiah Orion Damage, Inc After listening- I’m not a metal guy, and I have enough irritated memories from high school to sneer whenever I hear Metallica deepcuts. But the good stuff is excellent- Master of Puppets and Sanitarium are legitimate hard rock anthems. I listen to these at school, so I often start over from the beginning, which means I’m not as familiar with the second side of the album.

I love everything about the instrumentals to this album. My favorite songs on it are Damage, Inc. and Welcome Home. The main thing that keeps it at bay with three stars for me is James Hetfield's voice. I'm sorry, I just cannot stand it.
Liked master of puppets song. Guitar nice to listen to but overall not my vibe.
While I have a bias against this band, there's no denying the influence it had on the metal industry. Without Metallica there wouldn't be bands that put it to shame today. Also fuck Lars Ulrich.
Metal has about the same place in my head as hip hop - it's OK but not really something I'd choose on a day to day basis. I know Master of Puppets is a classic, but it's not really for me.
I liked it. It's worth another listen
Not really my thing but fairly enjoyable. 3/5.
I have hated Metallica since childhood and rolled my eyes seeing Master of Puppets as the next 1001 Album to Listen to Before You Die. "Battery" begins with Spanish style arpeggiated guitar playing before bashing away on a thrash metal rhythm, it isn't terrible and they are obviously proficient musicians who alternate sledgehammer noise with complex instrumental interludes. James Hetfield has a distinctive voice. "Master of Puppets" is an almost nine minute epic about governmental control with masterful dynamic shifts. "The Thing That Should Not Be" an ode to the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, with vivid poetic lyrics about hybrid-children watching the seas of madness for the old ones to arise. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" is beautifully melodic. This album benefits from not being the over-exposed MTV era post-1990s material, not recognizing singles or even potential commercial radio pop potential because all of the songs are longer than what corporate playlists would allow. "Disposable Heroes" is brilliant, how a culture uses abstract ideas of patriotism to compel young men and women to enlist, wage wars, and die alone in quasi-anonymity "clutching my gun" rigorously trained to be obedient and to negate identity, and in death called heroes but viewed as disposable. "Leper Messiah" takes on institutional religion "Make your contribution and you get the better seat" pew politics or a better place in Heaven. "Orion" a stunning instrumental. "Damage, Inc." thrashing final track, raging against a system.
Started off loving the Metallica sound, but the album started to get boring toward the end.
Some great songs, some okay songs, some songs left me with permanent confusion at how they're so big. Sorry Metallica, I love y'all but some of your music makes no sense to my ears.
Not quite my type of music mayne cz there were relatively less vocals through out but I will listen to to it once more
point9.
My frequently sung dog walk anthem. That alone saves this from being 2 stars. “Buster! Buster! Obey your master, Buster! Master of Puppies, I’m pulling the strings” With Metallica, I feel there’s a good band in there somewhere who default to basic thrash rhythms and dumb lyrics. Is it wrong to like them most when they sound like Marillion? 😬
This is the best of Metallica in my opinion, but it just never grabs me. The singing feels forced/fake. Also, the shortest song on this album is 5:12, with three clocking in over 8:00. Every time I've listened to this album, it seems like editing all of them down to around 3:00 each would have kept this thing moving and more exciting throughout.
Welcome Home and Orion the standouts. Higher 3, not quite a 4, the songs are just a little too long imo.
There would have been a time in my younger days when I would have given this a much higher rating. I saw Metallica when they were touring this album and opening for Ozzy. The highlight here is the Lovecraftian "The Thing That Should Not Be." This is a pretty good metal album, but it is no longer in heavy rotation on my playlist.
It's a cool album
Heavy metal. Most influential trash metal album. Very fast, very loud. But also very melodic and insane skills. Will never be my music, but it’s impressive for sure. Bit samey.
Songs i knew 3 (damage Inc, master of puppets, battery) Songs i liked: some of em I listened to this album while my blood alcohol content was around 75% baileys but from what I remember, it started strong then just faded a bit. Another solid album from the met but reminds me of slipknots later stuff, OK with some good songs that end up being the singles. Stopped just short of creeping into a 4 because I won't be going back to it. Very high 3.
I'm sorry bur this is just NOT THAT good. Sure the rifts are very crunchy, and the lyrics catchy, and the melodies are very well structured. However, it really just boils down to palm muted guitar and ham fisted drums. This is popular because it's basic. Even the soaring guitar solos become exactly what you expect them to be. I keep reading about the "brilliance" of Orion, the epic instrumental.....zzzzzz, it seems like a song they forgot to write lyrics to, and boy does it need them. Again, this is good music with mostly competent musicians but nothing special
It was fine. I liked some of it but not the super thrashy stuff (go figure)
Good for what it is. Not my cup of tea.
I was only familiar with the Black album, which I never particularly cared for, so wasn’t sure if I was going to like this one. I was pleasantly surprised by the music-instrumentally Metallica does some interesting stuff and I found myself engaged for the whole album. I don’t like thrash metal vocals at all and never cared for Hetfield’s voice-I still don’t. Was also reminded they decided to fight against Napster. What tools.
Overstays its welcome
quin mal de cap no és per tots els moments / si estic trista potser no toca serà guai per conduir
Ngl a lot of Metallica sounds similar. I good
ufff.. Metallica isch jetzt scho ned sone easy every-day musig und brucht scho de richtig mood dezue.
I'm ambivalent about Metallica albums, but these guys put on one hell of a live show
An 8 and a half minute long instrumental song. Come on lads. Otherwise fine. Simpsons: Yes
Tried listening a few times and I’ve got nothing to say.
The instrumentals are like no other but sometimes the lyrics got repetitive
Doesn't really thrill me
Solid, but too Thrashy for my taste. I miss the intricacy that I know other Metallica albums showcase more prominently. The album is also not exactly short and lacks highlights apart from the title song, which makes it tedious to get through for filthy casuals like myself. 3.5/5
Unmistakably Metallica. Runs out of steam with the last two tracks. Drumming always a weak point with metal though.
Not for me but I can see why it is acclaimed
Can you appreciate the craft without appreciating the music? That’s how I feel about Metallica. Wouldn’t listen to this again, but can understand why it is well regarded.
not for me
Good, but it feels same-y?
Hell yeah
I never cared for heavy metal.
i like the smiths - i said I like the smiths.
Hard rock gods, at the pinnacle of their genre, where most try and fail to reach. I’m no worshipper, but my respect has been earned.
Mooooooore Metallica? I rated the first few Metallica albums highly at the beginning of this journey. Now that I am so far in, I want to hear other types of music. Not really in the mood for more Metallica. 3/5
I know this goes down as one of the greatest of all times but it’s just not my bag. I could appreciate it and didn’t dislike it but wouldn’t return
Thought that was going to better than it turned out to be.
i didnt really like the singers voice
Classic metal album from the 80s. Standouts: Master Of Puppets, That Thing Should Not Be and Disposable Heroes.
Solid 3 for me. When it's good it's really good then it's just okay. 3/5
Solid overall, but too lengthy. Very heavy and nails the feeling it's going for, but similar instrumentals and vocals that become grating made the album go stale by the end. Favorite song: Disposable Heroes
I expected to like this album more, given the band’s incredibly loyal following, but it’s hard for me to take it seriously. It’s not that I can’t handle harder music/metal - it’s just that this feels so sterile. Everything feels too tight. Where’s the soul? This is about as interesting as a concrete business park from the 80’s. I feel like I gave this a really honest effort over the course of multiple listens, but came up empty each time. Maybe I’ll enjoy other Metallica albums more. I almost gave this a 2, but I’ve given out 3’s to other albums that are even less interesting (and certainly less impactful to an entire genre), so a 3 feels only fair here. 3/5 Highlights: Master of Puppets Damage, Inc.
Just not my thing
Yeah, it seemed fine. Wasn't really (and rarely am) in the the mood for a whole album of this.
I like a lot of metal, but never got into Metallica. I wouldn't even say that I went into this open-minded, I was actively trying to like it, but I just didn't. Maybe that says more about me than Metallica though. Not so bad I'd turn it off, but I just can't get excited about it.
Honestly a slightly disappointing Metallica album. While I thought Ride the Lightning was a perfect balance of dynamic playing and hard/heavy rock, ‘Master’ leans too much into the metal thrash.
The best parts for me: the energy, the stompy chanty parts, and the medieval or classical-sounding lead guitar. 'Orion' stood out too me. However, this album feels LONG, and a lot of the songs sound the same, and the lyrics aren’t always memorable. The grunted, strained lead vocals also wear thin.
Y'know, I've never really liked or gotten into Metallica, but this one was alright. Some corny lyrics, but I respect that they were talented and went pretty hard. Solid 3 stars.
Was alright. Songs went on a bit long and got bored after a while. Ok to listen to but nothing on this album moved me.
Still adore the riffs but the mix was dreadful.
Battery is great, the rest is decent, give or take. This type of metal tends to have dimishing returns for me.
Good but not quite my style… Vibed but not as much as some others. respect it tho
Not their best album. But still great!
Schon stark. Aber für mich unnötigerweise etwas zu brachial.
Faster does not mean better And neither does longer. Too long for what it's worth.
i almost feel stupid for not caring about this.
Oh Metallica...never had a connection or felt strong either way about them. Listening to their album for the first time, there were some nice parts. The guitar riff halfway through Master of Puppets was nice. Orion was good mostly because it was different and showed depth. The rest of it just meshes together and ultimately sounds the same, loud drums and loud guitar. Maybe that is my problem with metal...its very two things, loud and screaming (and I don't like either). I will give them a 3 only because I can see the influence here. They made metal mainstream and something more people can enjoy. Some might argue that is bad, but I think anytime you can introduce people to something and make more people accept it you are doing something right. Maybe they are sellouts, but they did make metal palatable and a few good sounds.
This was much better than their self-titled album. Fewer songs which were more distinct. Battery and Master of Puppets were great opening tracks. The only thing holding it back is just how samey his vocals are on every track and how dated and compressed the instrumentals are. 3/5
Pretty solid Metallica. I continue to be impressed with the band's actual skills as musicians, and the songs I wasn't already familiar with were decent. Still not really my genre, but I can appreciate it.
7/10 Great overall sound but became repetitive after a while. Opened well and finished poorly in my opinion. Metal isnt really my genre Fav=Battery/Master of Puppets Least Fav=Orion
Not Metallica's best album by far, but some good tracks.
Day270 - i guess i just like the hits you can have the rest of their songs
I’ve never been the biggest Metallica fan. There is only so much you can hear big James shout “YEAH” before it feels a bit silly. That said, this is probably the first time I’ve listened to Master of Puppets in full, so I tried to go in with as open a mind as possible. I did enjoy this for a few songs, but then it all quickly started to feel a bit to samey with the latter half of the album not really giving anything that hadn’t already been given by the former. I wouldn’t say I disliked this album. It was perfectly fine. Just not amazing.
Metallica is pretty good at what they do, am a fan of a few of their songs only! I like how it is hard rock but they’re not screaming into the mic the whole time. Like how it feels like a basement special. <<master of puppets
Oh Man, I already love Metallica and Im not sure I know this album, we going hard today! This album is quintessential 80's loud metal, but after listening to Beach Boy, The Who, Pink Floyd, in that order you can kinda hear the lineage. I don't remember Metallica being so anti-war, but it definitely has a message. Orion is dope, but I love Rodrigo y Gabriela's version Album is decent but not my fav, maybe 2.5 - 3 stars
Not my taste in music. However, beautifully constructed - a true classic
I'm not a metal girly. Like I said when reviewing Judas Priest, I find it to be very tedious and I get bored with it very easily. That being said I can appreciate this for what it is. It's definitely fun and there are moments that I'm like ok... I like this, but then the biddly guitars start and I just drift off a bit. I get why people love it but yeah not my thing.
2.5
I think what sets Metallica apart from other heavy metal bands is that musically they are beautiful. The instrumentation is exquisite. With that said, I still don’t love their music. The title track is fantastic, but the rest is just alright. Not bad, just okay. They have moments of brilliance here, but not enough for me to love it.
Really not for me but not terrible to listen to. Light 3.
Too much thrash. The gutteral sounding vocals don't make it any more appealing. There are some great guitar parts hidden behind those things. I think the best song is the instrumental -- Orion. This is a high 2, maybe 2.75, but I'll round up since others think think is one of the greatest albums of the last 50 years.
Master of puppets and Orion are great!
Es ist allgemein nicht meine Art von Musik. Aber der Song wie "Master of Puppets" ist schön künstlerisch aufgebaut, sowie die Instrumental Nummer "Orion". Das gefällt mir durchaus.
Some baller stuff.
I am not into heavy metal or thrash metal in any way at all. I was surprised that I enjoyed Master of Puppets and Battery as I went into the album with a negative mind frame. The guitar riffs were good and catchy, only downside is the songs are a little long. I grew to like the album. It has some good melodies and acoustic moments. its a 3/5. Favourite song: Master of puppets Least favourite: Disposable heros is not for me. there is a lot of screaming involved there. Album artwork: Cool cover, I won’t hang it up at home though
Like it 3/5
Good album. I’ve always liked “Battery” and the whole album works well. Just like some of their other albums more. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again
I enjoy some Metallica songs, and I was fairly excited to listen to this album, as I realized if I have listened to it in it's entirety, it was more than 25 years ago. That being said, I didn't love it. I felt it was too long. I don't mind a long album, I listen to a lot of Doom and Stoner metal, but I just didn't jive with the fast guitars playing the same riff for multiple minutes. I'll graciously give is 3/5 stars, because I did find myself enjoying it at times, and even though I was ready to turn it off before it ended, I didn't. There's songs on it I'd listen to again.
3.5/5

Fast, energetic and loud. Some interesting songs but I just don't love Metallica. This is probably close to a 4 but a 3.5 for me.
Don't love metal so I got about 40 mins in before needing a break. Good to listen to something different - it just is a bit too intense for me after a while.
I liked it better as Iron Maiden. Guitar solos just came out of nowhere.
Interesting lyrics but not my everyday taste
It’s ok
🎧Didn’t love this but it’s probably the best metal album I’ve gotten so far. Title track is cool, didn’t need to be over 7 mins long though. Some cool solos throughout and impressive musicianship, especially on Orion.
It's decent. As far as heavy metal goes, it doesn't get any more legendary that Master of Puppets. The instrumentals are superb, however the lead singer's voice got pretty annoying at the album went on. I could probably take the songs in doses, but not for a whole hour.
Somehow, best guitar riffs don't impress me much. This kind of rock starts to bore me pretty fast. Metallica definitely pioneered the sound, but it's not one I particularly like.
Typical Metallica album before they went mega. Average tunes average playing nothing to get exited about.
Goeie rock
Not as “pop metal” as the ubiquitous Black Album, which made me enjoy this more than I thought I would.
Didn't much like the Black Album and HATED S&M but this was actually alright.
Okay for yesterday's weights workout music.
I don’t know. It’s OK. I was hoping this would be Ride The Lightning II. There’s some thrashing going on but some songs go hard into the head banging chugga-chugga stuff too. Orion veers into Eric Johnson guitar harmony territory. Master of Puppets is a mixed bag.
Masters of their genre, just not my genre.
I like this, but, honestly, every song sounded the same.
1. battery - 2 2. puppetz - 5 3. not be - 1.5 4. home - 2 5. heroez - 1.5 6. mezziah - 1 7. orion - 2 8. damage - 1.5
Understand the significance of, but I listened all the way through and still don’t get it.
This is a pretty good album!
It was okay. Not my style of music really but I could enjoy them on a nice long roadtrip. Maybe if I was bored and wanting some nice concentrating music for studying or something like that. Would probably listen again? Not really, but it was enjoyable. 6/10.
Wow, i was really looking forward to this album when it popped up on the screen. Master of puppets is a classic tune. Really good stuff. However, i found the rest of the album pretty meh. Not a patch on the black album. A talented band for sure, but the songs were just OK.
I probably won’t ever give a metal album more than three stars. I usually suffer through them and give them a two unless they truly hurt my ears in a special way(looking at you Sepultra). So the fact that I didn’t mind this album either means it’s really great metal or it’s really lame metal! I’m not the one to judge.
A lot of good guitar doesn't constitute a great album. It wasn't awful by any means necessary, but I kind of expected more.
Kind of exhausting to listen to although I do appreciate how rad the guitars are.
Well this is definitely better than that 2 hour live Metallica album. I’m not really much of a metal guy, but I am a tad biased because this is one of my son’s favorite albums of all time. And I can’t lie: for what it is, it’s pretty good. Just not necessarily for me.
Listen, I’m by no means a metal guy. And I can’t dispute that this should be on this list. Buuuuuut….. This was pretty meh for me, and at times, I found myself rolling my eyes at it. I’ve heard metal that I like much more.
OK in small doses, but I don’t like screaming vocals. The instrumentation is good.
fantastic!
My firs Metallica album. I enjoyed it. I'm a sucker for anything played this fast, with that much enthusiasm. Some times listening to a bunch of dudes absolutely wailing on their instruments is exactly what you need. But I don't think it could ever be an everyday listen.
Not my type of music but I appreciate the popularity of the band.
Meh
A good album but not quite as good as Metallica 1 for me so 3 stars or C+ rating.
I put on track one immediately after leaving a screening of Furiosa and I was like, this is the best album ever. Then I listened to the rest of it the next day while running errands and stuff. You need the appropriate context for this kind of thing!
\m/
Appreciate the skilled musicianship on show here, they really know how to play. I enjoyed the instrumental track in particular, and the title track is of course a classic. I find nearly an hour of Metallica a bit intense tbh, prefer them in small doses, but I can see why this is considered a classic.
Things I have learnt from this list, yes I do love rock, but there is a reason I never really got into thrash.
Didn't really care for the first listen. I've only ever dabbled once a decade in metal and while there were things here and there that I liked, it was never enough of a package for me to care. Kinda same thing here, I don't really care for the technical guitar work at all, the overall sound is also not for me. But then I immediately replayed it and liked it a bit more. It's still not for me, but there was more that I picked up on and dug. I like the vocals (but it also makes me laugh listening to James Hetfield growl this shit out, knowing he sued Napster like a little bitch). I still don't care for technical guitar work and I'm fine letting Ramones be my hardest, fastest guitar strumming band, but this is another step along the way of me saying "Nah, there's something to metal that I really wish I dug more. In a different life, I'm a metal boy."
this was great fun
llega un punto en que se vuelve repetitivo, aun así un par de canciones destacan. no es lo peor que he escuchado.
Not for me
I was never into trash metal, it is too heavy and intensive music for me. I'm aware how big this album was in the mid 1980s, and I was a bit surprised that I enjoyed this album a bit more than I tought I would, it's very tight and precise music. The more intense and faster songs were more difficult to listen to, but overall it's an OK album.
Very heavy, really like the instrumentation. Makes sense as an album, just a little too heavy for my sensibilities
Like, yeah man, alright. Some of these songs I've heard so many times throughout my entire life, I don't know if I like them or I'm just used to them. The generator gave me this one right after "Metallica" and I gotta say I enjoyed the other one slightly more.
amzing start, but i think is very repetitive in the rest of the album. i loved orion, cause i love song which are just instrumental, a masterpiece, deserve more fame. fav: battery, master of puppets, orion.
i want to giv it more but there is too much guff on this album. 4 or 5 very good ones though
Metal still isn't really my thing and the every single track could have been cut by 50% but Welcome Home and Orion are pretty cool.
Great album, but I don’t think it’s near metallicas best. Sounds a bit over commercialized to me
Listened to this on the way to the Billy Strings show at fka Rosemont Horizon. Perfect lead in.
not really my thing, not as annoying as most thrash metal though
I like loud music so I loved this, but I’m not sure I could listen to it in full that often. I saw them live at a music festival about 10 years ago and it was awesome. Gotta love Metallica.
Naja, einige Abschnitte waren ja nicht so übel, aber insgesamt halt doch nicht mein Geschmack
I know some Metallica but wasn't very familiar with this album, except for the title track and Sanitarium. I like the mix of acoustic guitar and hard hock. The sound is tight but the songs are ok. I think their other albums are better.
Enjoyable for a metal album, but I think there is a limit to how much metal I want to listen to these days... and that amount is less than a full length album.
Of the metal albums I've been exposed to, this is the Goldlilocks so far. Not too screamy (Pantera), or with juvenile lyrics (Slayer), or comically falsetto vocals (Iron Maiden.) Ultimately not my genre, but can understand someone being a fan of metal based on this.
Highlights: Orion, Sanitarium. Turn the bass up you fucks
Not my favourite Metallica album (that'd be the Black Album) but it's perfectly ok to me. The last of the classic line-up and has great bangers on it list the title track and "Battery". Absolutely overindulgent though as no song clocks in at under 5 minutes.
It sounds fine, but also very samey.
80's speed metal. Metallica are probably the best of the second wave of metal bands. It's rare that I'm in the mood for that high energy stuff -- not usually a metal fan. Today was not one of those days.
I really thought I’d like this more. Kinda disappointing.
It's fine. I just don't want to listen to the whole, angry thing. Master of Puppets is a classic and will always be Metallica to me. I like the guitar on Welcome Home, it is very skilled playing by Kirk Hammett as usual.
An 80s metal album, and at 54 minutes for 8 tracks, these songs are long. Some don't feel so long, but the mid- to slow-tempo songs feel long. Even some of the faster paced songs like "Master of Puppets" is long at 8 and a half minutes. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" and "Disposable Heroes" are well written lyrically, but I didn't enjoy the listening experience all that much. "Leper Messiah" was my favorite, as it has a driving melody and it's less than 6 minutes long. Oddly enough I did also enjoy "Orion" for the most part even though there weren't any lyrics to carry it. "Damage Inc" was okay.
boring and uninspired
I'm not a usual listener of Metallica, but the album did not seem to be that bad.
Vocals were harsh but everything else sounded good
Rhythmisch sehr anspruchsvoll Gitarre grandios Melodien geht so
Metallica is one of those bands where all the talent in the world doesn’t change the fact this type of music does nothing for me. They’re really good, I’m just not interested.
I've never really liked Metallica, I hadn't heard this album before though (besides the title track). A few weeks ago I got their love symphony album which really impressed me, this one was mediocre in comparison.
Master of puppets was the slight stand-out Decent album high-quality performance can get a touch repetitive
“Pounding out aggression turns into obsession”…. Lyrics from the album opener Battery. Yeah, I get it. But this just ain’t my cup o tea…. I can see why this was popular, and it does what does well. But it’s all a little exhausting to me. I’ll give it a 3 since it is certainly quality, and was hugely successful. But no higher because I don’t like it at all. It’s like opera, I appreciate it without liking it at all.
Not my vibe. Very chuggy.
I’m just not a huge Metallica fan. It’s a fine album. I’m giving it 3 but can see why others would rate higher
I understand Metalloca had a cult following and influenced alot of the metal music around that era. I just don't think I am a fan of Metal like this. 3/5 it's OK.
Highlights: Battery, Welcome Home (Sanatorium), Disposable Heroes, Orion In a nutshell: master of (thrash) metal Came into this familiar with Metallica’s live album S&M and of course, Enter Sandman. Metal isn’t my thing…yet this album was surprisingly good. I can see why many teens from the late eighties through to the nineties idolised early Metallica- challenging instrument work (especially the drums!), thoughtful pace with tracks, lyrics of blistering angst… I need to give the band props for their endurance and building an album with little filler. I give Metallica a reluctant pass for the song length. This Puppets was not made for radio. This needs to be heard at least once all the way through. Or just listen to Orion and see how you go. Overall: 7/10
me grita
not my thing but i didn’t dislike it either
It's OK, nothing to really make me like it but nothing against it either.
Just a bit more "eh" than I was expecting
metallica albums are like listening to one really good song but 8 times (every metallica song is the same)
I mean, it's Master of Puppets, dude. Lars Ulrich still sucks though.
I want to like this one so much. All my cool metal friends tell me this is when Metallica was awesome before they sold out with the black album. I turned it on once on Tuesday morning and just couldn't play it. I finally listened to the whole thing today. Honestly it felt more like homework than checking out music. Master of Puppets is awesome though! Listened to that one a few times. Of course, I had been indoctrinated to that one from Stranger Things. Anyway, another description for 3-star albums: albums that are critically acclaimed but that you just can't get into it for whatever reason. See Notorious BIG for another example.
80’s thrash metal passed me by at the time - I always preferred British metal bands like Iron Maiden or Motörhead or the occasional bit of cheeky hair metal, and thought that thrash wasn’t for me. I was expecting this album to be hard work, but it turned out to be surprisingly accessible, with some interesting songs and allusions to the Cthulhu mythos. The whole thing is technically brilliant but it still didn’t completely grab me for some reason.
One of the best that they put out
This is my third Long Album in a row and I've never been a big Metallica fan, so let me try to be fair here. They are clearly accomplished musicians. The remaster of this album is a massive facelift. When their long songs work, it's because they managed to include a new hook every minute or so. Hetfield is not a good lyricist (I feel silly for caring about that at all on a Metallica record), but he is a good frontman and strong vocal presence. I wish I could hear the bass, which is not an uncommon complaint of mine regarding metal albums. Overall, I kind of enjoyed my listen but do not plan on returning, except to the highlights if the spirit ever so moves me. Highlights: Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Orion
Master of shredding
Eddie made the ultimate sacrifice when he played a rendition of Master of Puppets to distract a flock of Demobats from killing his friends......hero Obey Your Master
Better music than vocals
They just kinda have that one sound, ya know? It’s ok sometimes, fits nicely with a few songs, gets the head banging a bit. Even the acoustic guitar can shine here and there, but people come for the yelling “yeah-hah” and the wailing guitar. I like it enough, just not craving it.
Never mind Metallica. Some fun stuff on here but not going to put it on the "to buy" list. 3.5 stars
Genre defining. Epic metal album. Love how Metallica always kept true to themselves too. It’s just not my genre enough to score it hi. Sorry 😉
It's difficult for me to listen to listening to this genre without thinking it's satirical like Spinal Tap. I do like their youthful energy and idealism. The songs are very socially conscious - anti drug, anti war, anti evangelical grifters. I appreciate why some people like it, but it's not something I would generally listen to.
I'll allow it. But only if Sad Wings of Destiny and Number of the Beast are also in this collection.
Good but not great
Iconic sound and obvious talented. A bit repetitive in sound.
I have a deep appreciation for this album, but can’t really get behind it… Just not my style, and seems repetitive
Great thrash metal album. I think this one will rise with subsequent listens.
Metallica purists will not agree, but I prefer some of the more melodic entries in their discography. This is a face melter, but feels more “one note” than other albums. The title track is still incredible though!
Nice thrash album though I am not a huge fan of thrash or Metallica in general. I think they're just Okay and listening to this whole album kinda confirms that.
6/10
Gran disco pero no es mi estilo
Ahh man too many corny ass guitar solos. Still better than I expected
I appreciate their long hair. I think that King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard listened to these guys a lot. Not a huge fan of some of the guitar solos, the whole quick tapping thing isn’t for me. Their rhythm sections are a lot better. The singer’s voice works on some of the songs but really doesn’t on some others (tendency towards corny). Maybe I would feel differently if I was growing up in the 80s. They didn’t have King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard yet.
This isn't a genre I particularly like, but there is no doubt that this is an essential classic from within that genre
I've never been able to get super into thrash metal. After spending two years being obsessed with KG, I thought I'd like classic thrash metal more since they draw a lot of inspiration from 80s thrash. Turns out I mostly just like KG's version of psych/prog thrash. I don't dislike this by any means, I just found myself getting a little bored at times. I can totally understand why this was such a cultural phenomenon though. Getting music like this in the 80s would have been a lot of fun and would absolutely generate a cult following. I think this genre was slightly ruined for me by high school sports. It seemed like classic thrash metal was the anthem for high school sports teams and I can't help but think about that whenever I listen to it. Makes it feel a little cheesy to me. I like the technical aspect of the album. I wish the riffs and solos were a little catchier though. I liked the anti-war messaging in Disposable Heroes.
In general, I like metal; but it seems that, on this album at least, Metallica often sacrificed melody for fealty to the genre. A few of the songs on this album started out well - with interesting riffs and chord progressions that I would like to have seen explored - but they quickly morphed into stereotypical metal. Virtuoso guitars aside, I prefer it when the melody comes first.
Did you know the guys from all those SalesForce conferences and podcasts used to have a band?
Not a huge Metallica fan. obviously very talented people, but it's not for me. songs are too similar
Rock.
Not my fav Metallica album
A classic, I know, but quite an assault on the ears to just listen to. Not my cup of tea, although I acknowledge the complexity.
A little metal goes a long way for me, but when the mood strikes, it fits the bill perfectly. I have to get in, get what I need and get out before it all starts to sound the same. I appreciate the musicianship that goes into it. This album makes for a solid collection. Leper Messiah is my favorite here.
My second Metallica album in the project (first was the live album S+M). I've never listened to this album and only know the songs that were on that live album, which was hit or miss for me. It's been interesting for me to learn just how anti-war Metallica's tunes were - I've always associated them with the very cop-minded fans I know, another case of poor media literacy I guess. These are long, dark, brutal songs about needless violence compelled by cruel leaders. I preferred the tighter thrashier songs like "Battery" to some of the longer slower ones.
Not a big Metallica fan... They are incredible musicians, and the album is mixed to perfection. All the instruments sound great. But the music is a little too dramatic for my taste. If I'm in the right mood I can listen to a few songs, but it starts to get a little grating past that.
Know a couple of tracks of this bit never listened tobthe whole thing. It holds together well but it is not a sound that draws me in. Influentisl and heavy
It's okay
Wegweisend. Ich kann es mit heute noch am Stück anhören.
Didn't like
Started strong. Didn’t realize master of puppets had the orchestral interlude.
Intro (Battery) amazing, Orion amazing
Classic maar niet echt voor mij
