This album is lots of fun. Funky and eclectic. Animal Collective style is out there and definitely ambitious.

Album 937 of 1089 Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion (2009) Rating : 3.5 / 5 I went into this one a bit indifferent, not really knowing what to expect. It leans toward electronica, which usually isn’t my thing, but this album surprised me by finding a balance that worked. “Psychedelic pop” is a pretty good description - trippy and experimental, but still with some structure and warmth underneath it all. While some parts wandered close to the kind of electronic haze that tends to lose me, it never fully went there. Instead, it offered up some interesting indie-pop textures that hit with just enough familiarity to keep me listening. At times, it even reminded me a little of The Shins - and strangely enough, a bit of my son’s music, too. I’ll have to ask him if Animal Collective was ever an influence. The melodies may not always stand out, but somehow, it still works.

So good. Put this on headphones and went for a long walk. Was thoroughly entertained. The album has an amazing cohesiveness. The production is dense and multilayered. I loved it.

Excellent album that I have heard many times. "My Girls" is one of my favorite songs to test speakers out with. The album is not too aggressive being more relaxed and easy to listen to. It's not real distracting either, it's great to put on when you are doing other activities. It's been one of my favorites and will continue to get a lot of plays from me.

Psychedelic atmospheric music from the late 2000s. Brings me back! Loved this album when it came out. Haven't listened to it in years. Brought me back to smoking bowls and chilling out. Might have to play this one again when I can spark one... really recall that mood and feeling of times past.

Half of these songs are over five minutes long, but they all feel interminably longer. I often got the sense I was listening to two separate records being played over the top of each other and neither particularly complimented the other. I found it annoying and almost unlistenable in places so giving this a very generous 2.

This album sucked my dick and cured my cancer. 11/5.

My first thoughts listening to this album were: "Wow, someone in this band listened to a lot of MGMT but didn't understand what made it good." There's some interesting sounds here but it's not all connecting for me. I get it's experimental, and not every experiment will be successful. The stuff that's good is fewer and farther between than the stuff that's just weird.

I really didn;t think this was a great album - confused and overly busy production couple with wannabee-Beach Boys vocals.

Woefully unpleasant listen for my tastes. This barely even sounds like music.

OMG I loved this! What it is? At first I was thinking kind of alt/ rock or surf rock but it veers sometimes techno, has no singular voice, sometimes clear and concise, sometimes hard to follow exactly. But it works emotionally. I think that is the key. You more FEEL this band than what might be a typical alt/ almost experimental college radio band. Sometimes it takes half a song, just kind of grooving along before a switch up will hit you in the feels. I am super glad for the 1001 Album generator for sharing this one! Happy days!

Fun Fact! Warren Zevon does not appear on the 1001 albums. John Hiatt? Not a single one. Jackson Browne? Zero albums on this list. Taking up their spots are albums like this. Excruciatingly painful to listen to, every song blends in with each other to the point of sounding like one long annoying song for the entire tracklist. Don't give me the "psychedelic pop" or "experimental pop" crap - the album sounds awful. One of the few albums I've heard that actively hurts your ears. Like it causes pain. How. It takes a special type of album to do that. Would never play it again. It's brutal, the constant keyboard droning, unimaginative lyrics. The only way to enjoy it is if you're on a lethal amount of heroin.

Wanted to like, didn’t really

Wasn't sure what to make of this. Not an easy listen.

Man, this album is long and drawn out. It is filled with super-synthetic sounds that left me feeling ultimately uninspired. I think the lyricism is cheated by the sonicism. It’s so busily noisy, you can’t hear how good the lyrics are, which is a shame because there’s some good writing buried within. There are decent melodic elements, but it’s like they couldn’t accept what they had was good enough and decided to overbuild upon it with each track. Summertime Clothes is the only track that I really connected with and would give a re-listen.

Day 60, 10th record I own. This was the first new* album I felt was a favorite since I was mostly into classic rock prior. It remains a favorite. I can’t recall the timeline perfectly but I think I was a fan of “The Purple Bottle”, “Grass”, “Fireworks” and “Peacebone” before this came out (thank you Limewire). Maybe I had heard all of Feels but most of the new indie music I liked were the hits. Every song is a 5/5 for me. *Kanye’s debut and sophomore albums were a big deal to me but I wasn’t aware of their importance while MWPP felt like a revelation. Other favorites at the time were Raw Power, Marquee Moonlight and Loaded.

Could only get through half of the album. Nothing spectacular here.

I listen to a lot of music with similar elements incorporated within, but an entire album of this is too much. Drones on and makes my brain yearn for drugs. Album for my next acid trip, surely. Outside of that, meh.

If the beach boys had access to licking toads they likely would have put out something similar. However, the cohesion would have been stronger.

Great album

The music of Animal Collective is so alien but so unmistakably them I find it comforting. I prefer earlier stuff they did, but was happy for the commercial success they gained with this album. It’s good! It’s not Strawberry Jam but it’s still really good! I haven’t really kept up with the band on their last few releases, but I probably should because this reminded me how much I like them.

This is some hipster nonsense. Perfectly fine, but why? 2.4.

Innovative, playful, harmonious. I can see why they’re so influential. There’s maybe a personal cap at which I can enjoy the psychedelic drones and high-pitched loops, but I can recognize why they’re beloved. Peaks: Daily Routine, Summertime Clothes, Taste Pits: Brother Sport

I didn’t dislike this turn to more pop sounds for animal collective when this album first came out but I am much more a fan of their weirder stuff on sung tongs, feels, and some of strawberry jam.

Experimental is an understatement. Nothing here felt even remotely cohesive, and left me a bit unsettled. Also, I don't understand the vocal effect of making your lead singer sound like they're underwater, but that was a terrible distraction. Hard pass.

Not sure why this is on the list, but I would have been fine never having heard it. It's haphazard non-cohesive songs just didn't sit right with me.

Ah, I remember that for its nausea-inducing cover art. Not so much for its music. Coming back to it reaffirms that 10 years down the line, I'll remember the nausea-inducing cover art. The music, not so much. Trying to qualify this a bit more... It's Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - The Album. Way too many ideas and sounds and voices and noises in there to make for any kind of coherent listening experience. In fairness, this is partly my fault because I've never taken shrooms.

It's a little to much for me to really enjoy, but it wasn't bad.

This is what i thought imagine dragons sounded like when I was an idiot. Its fine... like its pretty in a way. But the electronic and indie type Mashup just is not something that works for me. My girls is the best song here but its not worth listening to it ever again. Maybe if I cared about lyrics at all I could connect with that but still dont give a shit. The yelpy vocals suck and the production on them makes them feel out of rhythm with the rest of the track. Lions in a coma is unlistenable with its weird twang. And everything else is just who cares type. Just nothing worth the time. Glad when it was over but not the worst thing ive ever heard. Just kinda generally crap

I, narcotic lightweight, ate a THC chocolate espresso bean at a party once that had me feeling like I was on an endless rollercoaster ascent and nice people were trying to talk to me about nice things but all I could think about is WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET TO THE TOP GODDAMMIT and experience a similar feeling with this record, which I suspect was influenced by slightly harder stuff. I do like staring at the cover. Sung Tongs is the AC record for this AC.

Animal Collective was always one of the weirdest members of the whole “freak folk” scene of the aughts, and here they go almost fully electronic — which raises interesting questions about how and why this album became as popular as it did. Opener “In the Flowers” uses faint keyboard refrains and what sound like hand claps to build to a gorgeous climax with a stomping techno beat, “My Girls” sounds like The Beach Boys playing with sequencers on ecstasy, and “Bluish” is a tender love song buried in waves of reverb and cascading bells. Kaleidoscopic, lush, multilayered and lacking conventional song structure, this is one of those albums that helped push all of popular music forward.

Beach boys, but on a lot more acid? Maybe I'm missing something but these guys never did much for me.

It's twee AF but still isn't boring. Docking a point for grown ass genx men with stage names Geologist and Panda Bear, since they are old enough to have known of U2 before making music and didn't heed the warning that being a 50 year old man with a name like The Edge or Bono Vox is just embarrassing.

I was surprised by how much I liked this. It was quite refreshing, and the overall sound was unique

Trippy album cover, eh? Matches the music too. I don't know how I feel about this one. There just is a lot of...noise? Just a lot going on. It varies between good and bad, but I don't think I liked it totally for near an hour of runtime. I wished I was into it more because the beginning of this was pretty good. Low 3.

Animal Collective is one of those bands that I feel like I _should_ like more given what I tend to gravitate towards, but for some reason their music has never fully resonated with me. I mean there are individual tracks that I love, but on the whole I have never been consumed. Opener, In the Flowers, is oddly anxiety inducing. Something in between the shimmering, underwater vocals and cascading effects and lopsided bullshit landing around 2:40 just puts me completely offbalance and makes me deeply uncomfortable. Where In the Flowers is uncomfortable, My Girls is a pure pleasure to listen to. Just an anti-materialism/capitalism ode to a simple life that is beautiful. Matching the theme of the song, this one is fairly minimal in construction with the bulk of the instrumentation formed by a combination of sparkly synths, some bass thrums, and tambourine crashes. Summertime Clothes is another favorite of this album. Similar to many other songs here, it is built around a set of repeating synth loops that build are embellished upon. But the vocals have a lovely bounce to them that is infectious. Bluish dips into a more ethereal, dream-like space and the effect is absolutely beautiful. Love the shimmery and blissful nature of it with the layered vocals and dripping + fuzzed synths. The jaw harp (or whatever it is) on Lion In a Coma is goofy, but quite fun. No More Runnin is delightfully sleepy. Gotta say that Brother Sport is one of the more annoying things I've listened to recently. I come away from this listen no more wowed than usual. This is a fine album and it has the ability to transport me back to a distinct time and place. I like what AC are after and I think it connects well on many songs as described above, but there are a few cases where I find their loops to be incredibly annoying even bordering on uncomfortable. For that I give this a softish 4.

Shoutout MPP, great hometown venue for us! Have loved the renovations that have done with it ever since the roof randomly collapsed. There was a whole lot going on in this album noise wise. This album was good and bad at the same time. Liked a lot of the sound effects, but not so much the singing. This was a very 2000's sounding album. Starting off I thought I was really going to like it but got disappointing as it went on.

Weird I randomly listened to this last week. My Girls is a top tier song. So bouncy and fun. Honestly this entire album is. Summertime Clothes is awesome. The break in Daily Routine is so dreamy. I'm getting lost in your cuuuuuuurls. LioninacomaLioninacoma. Excellent use of digeridoo on this one. Harmonies and production kill on this one. Like if the Beach Boys took DMT and made an album. Would 10000% take drugs and listen to this.

'If I could just leave my body for the night / Then we could be dancing.' B/c of the assumptions I had - that Animal Collective could only be enjoyed by all white cross country teams in the Northeast - it took some time for this record to grow on me, tho only about three mins into the opening track. Their most obvious pop-music analogy is The Beach Boys, and specifically Brain Wilson: the psychedelic silliness, the wholesomeness, the harmony. Contemporary affinities are w/ Fleet Foxes and The Flaming Lips, but they achieve something few other groups do: a brand new whiteness. For the length of an entire album, their novelty dwindles, but I have no plans to be insincere. I readily concede, and celebrate, that much of this is gorgeous.

Surprised I didn't hear this in its time, sounds like a bit of me

2009 Absolutely bang on for bland naughties, 'experimental' indie fodder that was synonymous for the period. I had no idea what this was, and having listened, I'm baffled as to why it's even on the list. This is the kind of album that's made for a glowing Pitchfork review. You know it's going to be massively overrated and hailed by that pretentious millennial muso still living his uni years, despite holding down a job as a lab technician in Kettering. I had never heard this before. The first half is excellent. The album drags towards the end and is less interesting and makes this feel longer than it is.

I'm sure the guys were having fun when they wrote this album. While it comes across as creative and experimental, it also comes across as lazy and not good. The mix really isn't that great. It's like this is an album that some guy who always needs to know an unknown indie band tells you to listen to when you let him know that you enjoy MGMT.

Noisy. Not fun to listen to. The singer’s voice was fine. I just didn’t like the music. All the songs sounded the same. I feel like they were trying to sound like Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend, and MGMT, but they were nowhere near as good as those bands.

Intriguing, I feel inspired. Maybe not everything on this album, but the other songs are good.

Not my type of music

A great and nostalgic album for me. In the Flowers, My Girls, Summertime Clothes, and Brother Sport have all been frequent plays for me at one time or another. Definitely a very noisy album but an enjoyable one. 8/10 (4/5)

Too much. That’s really the only way I can sum this up. It’s all over the place, and I never got a handle on what their sound is even supposed to be. Instead of feeling layered and lush, it just felt messy and overwhelming. I’m sure the band absolutely worships at the altar of Brian Eno, which is why they made this list, but for me it was just noise without direction. Pass.

I was pretty ready to hate this, after reading the reviews. Gotta stop looking at the reviews before I listen. Not going into my regular rotation, I think, but likeable, like a big dog that licks your face too much.

Not my style at all. Very asymmetric rhythms, which made it hard to follow. Pretty strange to be honest. Only made it 4 songs in. 2/10

It's an OK album but you need to be in right head space for it. I'm sure that teenage me would have loved it and listed the crap out of it but now I feel like it's a bit bland.

I can't distinguish between all these indie rock bands, but this one has a cool cover and opening song.

Meh. Lots of potential but the singer doesn’t seem to be able to get out of the rest of the bands way. Melodic, somewhat dreamy music but some of the vocals really take me out of it.

This album is all about the production - dense, expansive, pulsing and dizzying. This isn't a straightforward record, and I appreciate the craft and invention on display but have trouble getting into the songs. For all the variety of noises on the album, every song sounds the same.... Cool sounds, but not for me - Beach Boys in space.

I listened to this album a lot back when it came out - some solid psychedelic indie!

Wound up listening to this all day. Great example of an album that is far better than the sum of its parts. Hard to choose single songs on here that I really love and want to add to playlists, but listening to it all together is an absolute pleasure. Such creative music.

"Experimental Pop" should be the first red flag. The endless echoy reverb should be the second. If you're already ignoring those then you're own your own kid...

I've owned this album for a long time but, honestly, it's never really clicked for me. Personally I give it a 3 but I suspect this is my issue. It's in the same ball park as early Mercury Rev (Boces, Yerself Is Steam), and I much prefer these. I know people love this record though so I think it's a "me problem"!!

I don’t get this album at all. I didn’t particularly enjoy the constant electronic barrage, the vocals weren’t anything special, and there’s a distinct lack of memorable hooks and melodies. Mostly sounds like the worst tracks on a Tame Impala album. Couple of good tracks, but bafflingly overrated.

Okay. Indie music that feels of it's time. On the more Avant Garde end though so not many songs in a typical sense. More musical notes in a void.

Pretty chill vibe, but not a fan of the extra sounds mixed in. In general I’m not a fan of those sounds like with Fireflies by Owl Coty and Natasha Beddingfield.

Less energetic and freaky than the Animal Collective albums that came before it, but the many layers of synths still give this a ton of complexity. There are a lot of different sounds, from the watery to the bouncy, that wash over each other and provide a lot of melodies to follow. I'm most immediately drawn to the poppier songs, especially "Summertime Clothes," and sometimes I wish there were more moments like the chorus of "Daily Routine" that really popped. But I also know an entire album of that would get tiring, which makes me appreciate the more hypnotic moments of songs like "Guy's Eyes" and "Brother Sport" more.

I found this album very grating and repetitive. Usually after multiple listens I start liking albums more but not in this case. If they ever find out if they are all the things that are outside of them I won't be around to hear about it. Maybe a 2 but I am really trying to get the most out of this low resolution scale.

I’m giving it a 2 because I like the creativity and some of the songs are pretty fun to listen to. A key factor weighing into my rating is that I have seen them live before and they were horrible. The worst show I’ve ever seen. No melodies were played - it was just people making sounds on instruments. It was intentional… and it was not pleasant. So this album also far surpassed my expectations going in lol

One of the best electronic albums on this list so far, because they actual take advantage of the technology to create a huge sound. The songs are so deep and layered that I constantly found myself discovering new sounds in the songs the longer they went on.

pretty soft and inoffensive rock. Something you could put on while enjoying a day at the lake, I find it runs long and borders on weird and spooky at times. Overall a decent experience.

Really messy, don't like this at all

I feel like I listened to this in the past and didn't particularly like it, but I found it reasonably engaging listening this time around. A fairly strong three, close to a four.

A couple of interesting songs.

I am a huge Animal Collective fan and while this was the album that blew them up outside a more niche act, it also lost some of the weirdness that I love. I often find myself reaching further back when I want to listen to some Animal Collective but I can't lie that since I revested MPP this week, I've been finding myself humming Guys Eyes nonstop.

#118 - Finally something worthwhile! Pretty unique sound, it was a bit weird at first but I definitely enjoyed it. Worth a relisten to pay attention to the layers.

Maybe patient zero for the 2010s indie resurgence. I definitely remember “My Girls”. It’s inspired, ambitious, and careful, and consequently labored and a little precious. There are strong hooks in here that get buried in all the reaching for psych-pop. All the songs are bloated by at least 30 seconds to a minute as well, which makes me less charitable. Not as experimental as I remember people saying it was back in the day.

Some of the repetitive parts can be headache inducing.

It's cool, but it's so hard to get through. I will finish it eventually

There was something really beautiful about this one. I was not familiar with it, but it was just being immersed in a pretty world. For me it wasn't too perfect (Daily Routine felt like it dragged) but I was pulled in and found myself really enjoying it. One criticism is I didn't always feel the ending and beginning of each song, it just all sort of melted together.

This one took me several listens to get through because I kept ending on "what?". And then I'd listen to it again and get totally spaced out in some sort of pulsing electro psychedelic dream cloud. Bonus points for artistry. This is definitely an artistic album with incredible sound alchemy. I especially liked In the Flowers (where it really KICKS IN at 2:30ish is awesome!), My Girls, Summertime Clothes, and Lion in A Coma. Far out!

Merriweather Post Pavilion is the best psychedelic record of the 21st century. This album takes you on a blissed out journey inside and outside the mind with or without drugs. It’s all so very immersive. Had this been made in the 1960’s, Animal Collective would be spoken of with the same breathlessness as The Beatles. They did what any truly great band does…took their influences and modernized the hell out of them making it sound new. This is also Animal Collective’s most consistent record. Others have moments of artistic brilliance but never as often as on here. Mostly though, the songs are just great. Highest highlights are My Girls, Bluish, Summertime Clothes, Lion In A Coma, and In The Flowers.

Felt a little blast of nostalgia with this one, it took me back to a very specific time and place in my life. My Girls has been a song in my regular rotation over the years, but I haven't listened to this whole album in probably 15 years. It's always interesting to see if and how time changes our perspective and our listening experience. No idea how I would feel about this if I was hearing it for the first time, because it's kind of weird, but I love the way it radiates with a unique type of sunshine while also having a dreamy quality about it. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy and makes my heart happy. Bonus points for a cover that moves!

Not an entirely original observation, but this does remind me of a much trippier, more evolved Beach Boys. The close, barbershop harmonies especially. Initially, I only liked it, without really loving it, but the album weas just off to a slow start. Then the tracks that I liked a lot; the amazing Summertime Clothes, the boioioioing of Lion in a Coma, and how Brother Sport snuck up on me. Honestly everyone describing this as noise, or repetitive, or confused, just get a grip. (Also the repetition? I mean, that's a key element in music, especially electronic and classical music.) This list isn't going to be all guitars and choruses in 4:4 time, jeez. I mean, I hated Throbbing Gristle, but I appreciated it being on the list. I hated Limp Bizkit, but they were representative of an era. Waahh, waahh, it's not some dad rock from the 70s. Suck it up and expand your horizons when you're listening to this list.

I didn’t want to turn it off, but I also don’t have any desire to turn it on again.

I bought this on CD - yes, CD kids - because a music magazine (Q if I were to guess) had wanked themselves into an absolute frenzy over it. I remember feeling slightly underwhelmed at the time, and this remains my feeling having had another chance to give it a spin. Yes, there's some clever indie Beach Boys vibes here but it ends up feeling like a technical exercise. Which, yes, OF COURSE the music press absolutely loved.

This one wasn’t really for me. There were parts of the songs I would like but then there was often something I didn’t like or it would just be very repetitive. For a while I had it on in the background while working and then it was fine, but when I was listening properly I found it largely boring and occasionally annoying. As a Marylander who lives pretty close to Merriweather Post Pavilion, I was hyped for this…. I was wrong to be hyped. This was a dull test of patience that mostly sounded like one long song just never ending. Hell I thought the first 3 tracks were just one song until I looked at Spotify and realized I was on track 3. The entire listening experience was just ranging from mid to boring.

This is one of those albums I’ve always seen and knew existed but have never listened to. It’s good. It’s definitely important because I can point to about a dozen bands that don’t exist without being influenced by this.

Feel like I've tried listening to this album previously and not really getting into it, but don't really remember it either. Not recognizing it this time. Either way, I'm not really getting the hype despite its status as a hipster classic. I think that's mostly the age on this album. This album could only have been made around the time it was. Does not really work for me in the year 2025. Its generally a fun, quirky, happy album, very Beatles influenced, just not doing it for me. Kinda felt the same way about the Beach House album I got early on in this project. Probably would have given it a 4 back in the day, but now, its a 3. Great album art though.

Have tried many times but never got the hype with this album. Dense layering of synth textures and rhythms echoing around a big reverby space with all the digital bells and whistles thrown into the mix, combined with breathy multi tracked vocals weaving in and out of each other among the synth leads. It's a trippy sound that floats and jangles and pulses in a bright sunny haze through a set of meandering strangely baggy seemingly (but not actually) structureless songs. There some cool sounding stuff in here, but they remain an emperor's new clothes band for me.

Move to Philly, buy a loft, start a noise band. Get 6 or 7 roommates; eat hummus with them. Book some gigs. Paint, smoke cloves, listen to Animal Collective. Start some type of salsa company. Hannibal Buress, 2012. This is my reference point for Animal Collective, a band that has the unfortunate distinction of releasing an album in the period of culture death known as 2009. The only good thing that happened in 2009 was the beginning of RuPaul’s Drag Race. That’s all we had. And I didn’t even understand that shit yet. ‘Twas a cruel time. With the calming monologue of Hannibal coursing through my veins, I’m ready to experience Philly loft music at its most potent. Please be more interesting than the other albums we’ve experienced from this infamous year In the Flowers - This really is music you’d listen to while eating hummus with 6 or 7 roommates. What the hell is going on? It’s interesting and layered, yet still also somehow falls into the trappings of radio indie folk of the era. Which of course, I am a small sucker for. Jury is still out, but I’m definitely listening. My Girls - This is either famous, or Spotify has played this for me a 1000 times. I’m not mad, I kind of like it. Do I? It’s hypnotic and interesting, but if you removed the swimming instrumental, it sounds like a Down with Webster song. I can’t possibly enjoy that. Can I? Eh. I like it. Too cool an atmosphere to ignore. Also Frightened - Hi I’d like to state that I’m also frightened. Perhaps of fatherhood? I’m probably taking the lyrics too far, but the weight of impending parenthood is certainly heavy, and requires a lot of introspection. Decent song. Summertime Clothes - The vocal line is not my thing. The atmosphere continues to drag this along. Daily Routine - This was a nice song. Thumbs up from ya boi, music hater Supremo. Bluish - I bless the rains down in Africa. It could also be that song by Savage Garden from the 90’s. That’s more of a reach. This is just floating by for me. Guys Eyes - More vast nothingness. I mean it’s not THAT stark, but it is lacking a little bit of a punch. I actually really don’t like this song. What a sparklingly worded review. Another masterclass. Taste - More repetition I believe. This one has a cooler melody underneath the buzzing, but when we have the same wallpaper enveloping every track, it’s hard not to feel like it’s all the same. Lion in a Coma - Coolest song title in an album full of cool song titles, and yet one of the worst songs. EDM style didgeridoo sample with “lion in a coma being said repeatedly for the duration of the track’s run-time. If the combination of “EDM” and “didgeridoo” made you feel ill, congratulations, you may be normal. No More Runnin - Yeah this one is good so far. Quiet, but still faithful to the lush soundscapes that this band seems intent on creating. It all comes together pretty well here. There is something I’m just not loving about it still. Might be one of those “not for me” instances. Brother Sport - Alright. Well this was the final straw. I wanted to like this, but this is “worst man you’ve ever met gets spiritual to attempt to seduce to the worst woman you’ve ever met.” White spirituality is a whole rabbit hole that I don’t want to even broach today. I’m weary. This song sucks. Way to leave me disappointed. Full disclosure, I listened to Ice-T’s 1991 album, “O.G. Original Gangster” before this. Back to back. I gave that fucker a 4. Well, 3.5-4 if we’re splitting hairs, but I really enjoyed it. I’m tempted to make some joke saying I prefer “dumb” music, but there was actually a lot of substance on that record if you read between the lines. Merriwrather Post Pavilion obviously has capable literary lyricism, and a penchant for deliberate song writing that I assume conveys messages heretofore unimagined by the unwashed music listener. All that to say, I didn’t get much from this. Whether the thesis statement was above my head, or dragged down by repetitive dance music and white boi reggae buried under dense static-y indie noise, the message was lost on your humble reviewer. Some of this may be worth a re-listen, but there appears to be so much filler on here that I can’t endorse it as it stands right now. Tf is this. Very wary of 00s albums I've never heard of. I assume they made a new edition once and didn't stand the test of time. But there'll be a hidden gem eventually so let's go I'm not into this sort of dreamy shoegazey indie. Like at all. but these are some nice noises. If you are into it then this probably is a hidden gem. Or not even hidden maybe everyone talks about it on the neutral milk hotel forums all the time. Solid 2.5 probably but I'm forced to round down because i stopped paying attention halfway through

This is definitely an album that I can just get lost in because it sounds so dreamy, but I felt like I couldn't quite understand the lyrics well enough. Also, all the songs sounded pretty much similar. Maybe one has an electric guitar and the other just has a synth but the vibes of the songs and the soundscapes created were all pretty similar and blended together. But the performances and instrumentation were so good I can't hate it.

Struggled to finish this album. Still enjoyed it though.

Within a sea of 2009 landfill indie emerges Merriweather Post Pavilion, one of the decade's most impressive and enduring records. A dense and uplifting experimental sunshine pop record which bounces from shimmering, hyper melodic synths to fidgety psychedelia. This record pushed a generation of kids away from Razorlight and The Pigeon Detectives towards Tame Impala and Beach House. The shift was real and sizeable. Part of its appeal is that Animal Collective has a foot in two camps. While being uncompromising (gleefully engaging in glitchy excesses which will be annoying to some) they have created highly accessible, well crafted pop songs for those who are swept away by the drama. They are entirely lacking in self consciousness. They have spent no time considering how the outside world would respond to the record or the prevailing forces of music at the time. The results are majestic.

I’m going with my guy here after 3 full listens having saved this one for years, it’s probably a 5.

The coolest thing about this album was the cover, which did impress me with the weird, shifting leaf motif. That was it. The music sounds like a Beach Boys tribute band, but without any soul, no hooks, nothing but repetitive and boring rounds of singing with stuff going on in the background. This is the kind of album I would imagine playing to clear the room, as it seems to set itself out to deliberately be annoying. One dismal star I'm afraid.

I've listened to worse but my first thought here was how high do you have to be to enjoy this album? Come to find out the answer is not high enough.

I can understand why this has a lot of fives and ones. Hell I feel like giving it both these scores. It is an exercise on one level in opaqueness and production. Songs appear to be being played underwater at times. Many are soundscapes that while pleasant lack focus. But at its best - on closer Brother Sport and My Girls, it's how the Beach Boys might have sounded if they were into glitchy electronica. I looked at this album and it's 2007, making it one of the last albums I would buy before Spotify made it possible to hear a whole album instantly with no commitment to purchase. Like many other frustrating things about this album, I struggle to remember why I bought it, but there's enough intrigue here to keep it on the shelves. 3.5 but rounding down for calling yourself Geologist and Panda Bear.

Another new one. Kinda like noise mixed with MGMT and Temu Pink Floyd... a little Beach Boys (Also Frightened.) I cant say I enjoyed it though. I was keen to have this one over with after the first two tracks (the second having 61mil listens).

Glassy joyful weird in a good way.

I have tried and failed to get into Animal Collective in the past and this album was part of that journey. At the time (maybe 5-6 years ago) I thought it was pretty mediocre and I never returned to it. But people age and tastes change so I don't mind giving it another shot. Gonna try to go into this with a fresh mindset. In The Flowers Strange and atmospheric intro. Psychedelic delayed sound. Watery and dreamlike. Interesting explosive synth passage, love the experimental vibe. Decent. 3.5/5 My Girls I like the oscilating synths. Don't love the vocals. The percussive elements are pretty cool I suppose. Dynamic melodies. Great layering. Kinda don't love the lyrics. Decent. 3.5 Also Frightened Pretty busy and all over the place. Don't love the sluggish vocals. It's unique, but really difficult to follow. Dislike. 2/5 Summertime Clothes Interesting vocals. Decent chorus. Slowly getting into the heavy electronics as the song goes on. Has a bit of an ethereal vibe at times. Good. 4/5 Daily Routine Don't love the loud synths. The track goes through a lot of changes, leaving it almost unrecognizable at times. Really like the slower, reverby, atmospheric part in the middle. Decent. 3.5/5 Bluish Very dynamic instrumental. Extremely psychedelic and dream-like. Kinda getting into the vocals as the song goes on. I like the higher register portions. Decent. 3.5/5 Guys Eyes The woodwinds and the background ambience in the intro is pretty cool. Interesting vocal layering. Don't really like the "need her" part at all. Annoying. Fails at reaching a hypnotic effect. Does feel really busy after a while. Dislike. 2/5 Taste There's a lot going on. Has some okay melodies and some interesting layering. Not too inspiring. Average. 2.5/5 Lion In A Coma Jaw harp? Great sample. Love the instrumental. Solid chorus, really like how it builds up. Decent. 3.5/5 No More Runnin I like the slower tempo and less chaotic sound. I like long notes in the chorus. There's a bit of a liquid sound to the instrumental that really works. Fine. 3/5 Brother Sport Rough start. Kinda find the main vocal melody really irritating. Annoying synths. Unbearably repetitive at times. Mindless and obnoxious. Points for creativity. Strongly dislike. 1.5/5 I appreciate how experimental and loose it is when it comes to both sound and structure. It's a creative blend of psychedelia and synth pop which pushes some boundaries while still keeping a self contained sound. Unfortunately not all of it is pleasant or frankly even listenable in a casual setting. And while it remains impressive from a creative standpoint it has some moments that are just headache inducing. Between the psychedelic reverb and the dreamy layering there's also a lot of strange and sometimes even annoying synths that with their heavy repetitive nature buries into your brain stem and becomes really obnoxious. Now most of these songs have great moments, with fun samples and interesting vocal choices, each and every one of them also has some sort of element that just isn't all too pleasant. In the end it's a bit of a mixed bag. The solid amount of ethereal moments on here is definitely the highlight, with the reverby, synthy psychedelic ambience kicking you into a sonic realm all of its own. That's where this album shines, when it finally allows the listener to listen in on something focused and unique. When it isn't that it is busy, overwhelming and inaccessible. 3/5

Not a fan of this sound. It's like beach boys but with somehow worse mixing.

An overhyped experiment that mostly feels like being trapped on a musical carousel you can’t get off. The album drowns in high-pitched vocals, endless repetition, and layers upon layers of sounds that never really go anywhere. It plays more like a chaotic noise collage than anything melodic or dynamic. I actually found myself getting annoyed as it went on, and that rarely happens when I listen to music. 1/5

Really enjoyed this one, felt really unique and ethereal at times, the first song had a great explosion of sound in the second half after 3 minutes of music which felt perfect for sailing a boat in an enchanted forest or something. Other favourites include: summertime clothes, daily routine, bluish and taste. The album cover is really cool aswell, really matches the sound of the album. Overall, 7.5/10.

This is a very technically impressive album, and I find myself enjoying it more than I thought I would when I first saw it. There’s a clear influence on indie music of the 2010s here that is undeniable. I would have hated this when it came out in 2009 but I’ve found that my attitudes towards music in the 2000s-2010s closed me off to a lot of good stuff that I missed at the time.

I put this on in the early hours of the morning whilst I rocked my little girl to sleep, with my partner asleep in the bed next to me. My Girls was unintentionally the perfect accompaniment.

Merriweather Post Pavilion falls squarely in the “not great, not bad” category for me. It’s got a unique sound for sure — very layered and trippy — but it didn’t really blow me away. That said, there were definitely a few tracks I liked. “Lion in a Coma” had a cool groove to it, and “Brother Sport” brought some solid energy to the back half of the album. Those two stood out the most and gave the record a much-needed boost. Also, shoutout to the album cover — that optical illusion look is pretty wild and definitely one of the more memorable visuals I’ve seen on an album in a while. Favorite song: Lion in a Coma

Modern acid band, these guys are weird. Panda Bear in particular does some weird things and a lot of the time it doesn't work (looking at you, Lion in a Coma), but then their standouts are awesome, like the very next song, No More Runnin. It's beautiful and lets the mind settle into a little pocket of vibes, almost like a rainforest with light rain dripping with frogs croaking to the beat. Very unique band and I like that.

My fondness for the venue has sadly never been matched by the album (2.5/5)

Pretty decent indietronica with a nice psyche sound to it, with some great production & vibe to it, however it's a little longer than it should be & the album can feel a bit samey & boring at times, although, that may be partially be because indietronica isn't really my thing, but still, it had some highlights with a nice atmosphere to it & I found myself enjoying it at points, it's decent.

This is a decent album. I didn’t care for a lot of it when I heard it years ago, but it’s grown on me. I think there’s still some just ok songs, but Brothersport is probably my favorite album closer of all time.

Woah. Cool illusion on the album cover! I've genuinely never seen that before! Anyways, this Animal Collective album is really good. It kind of gives Beach House vibes. I don't like this album quite as much as Teen Dream, but it's still pretty freakin' great. The style here is pretty unique and I like it. It's got some psychedelic elements that I've seen compared to the Beach Boys. I kind of get it, but not a ton. The electronic and indie elements add to that to create an album that feels modern. I enjoy the sound of the album, and the singing is a big part of that. This album's got some nice harmonies. I like that. The writing is also considerably pleasant. A good chunk of these songs relate to romance, as is often the case. These songs focus on the topic in interesting ways though, with songs like "Summertime Clothes" and "Bluish" being strong examples of this. The album even has some songs about having kids and family! That's so sweet! This is just a very pleasant album to listen to. It's a decently varied album with a lot to love. This is the kind of late 2000s indie album that belongs on a list like this. High 4/5.

It’s not really something I would listen to much, there was a song I recognized that I liked. I just prefer more prominent drum percussion.

Giving this two stars, as there are a couple tracks that are decent such as "My Girls" and "Summertime Clothes." The rest infuse together to create a distorted representation of ambience, not smooth relaxing kind, but one that creates a sense of anxiousness.

This album was truly like nothing I have heard before. The vocals were soothing, almost hypnotizing at some points. This worked to its favor most of the time. I really appreciated the artistic choices made in this song. For example, Daily Routine has a keyboard which plays sporadically at the beginning of the song (representing the hectic nature of the daily routine of the "storyteller") and eventually stopping (representing the day drawing to a close). It was really cool, and the lyrics across the board were great. Where it suffered for me a bit is that the vocalist uses the same tone across all songs, which makes the love songs, triumphant songs, angry songs, etc all have a similar feel.

This is a very noisy album. Its hard to listen to. Like really listen to because there is so much going on, but I like it. I'm also not in a good mental place right now, which definitely affects my experience.
