Reviews (page 11 of 13)

Not a Springsteen fan and this isn't his best by some way so I'm even less of a fan of this album. Musically, pretty dull. Lyrically ordinary, I guess he's quintessentially American and I can't really relate on that front either.

Típica musica de fondo de alguna peli tipo Shrek. Pasable

asi como buenos temas, temas que un poco zzz y eso que le soy fiel a la musica basada en yearn and long peero instrumentacion muy buena respetaron la vibra la entendieron

not really my thing sorry mr bruce

I have so much love for the Boss, but not this particular album.

pff ik vind da toch maar wa gezaag zene

it's alright, i guess. not really something i would independently choose to listen to, but it's not grating or anything. "Adam Raised A Cain (different take)" has a fantastic guitar solo and sounds more like my kind of thing compared to the first song on the album.

Just like... boring man. Devoid of uniqueness (except for his uniquely atonal voice) and creativity but nothing egregiously wrong with this album sonically. Just made my eyes glaze over and suddenly it was 45 mins later and I hardly remembered a single melody or lyric.

Favorite: … Least favorite: Racing in the Street Springsteen is a good story teller. Some of the music is interesting. I just can’t help but feel like this album could only truly be enjoyed by your redneck uncle who’s 10 Bud Lites deep at the family barbecue. It’s marred by generic, over indulgent guitar solos that could only be appreciated by those who have never heard an actual visionary guitarist at work. And the saxophone solo that follows up the less-than-thrilling guitar section of “The Promised Land?” Am I listening to pretentious band students perform at a high school variety show? On top of it all, the songs free of this overindulgence are incredibly boring. The progression of the album also feels disjointed, without any clear central themes or even sonic motifs to unite the song selection. Why am I listening to a 7 minute ballad halfway through that album? “Streets of Fire” is the only slow-burning song like this that manages to escape complete mind numbingness. Unfortunately, it breaks the monotony with terrible crooning that’s hard to sit through and, you guessed it, the sweet payoff of another ridiculous, generic guitar solo. Darkness is 45 minutes of pure, unadulterated, all-American Dad Rock tunes sandwiched between incredibly boring ballads that drone on for minutes after they should have concluded. While I understand the appeal of his sound and lyrics to the blue collar class, I’ll stick with Tom Petty when I’m craving the Heartland Rock sound in the future.

No disrespect but this is lowkey a more boring Bob Dylan and just didn’t work that well for me. I can see what this album is going for but it was a bit too plain and uninteresting for me. Nothing wrong with it but it’s simply too simple.

Badlands - no comment, nadda. Adam Raised a Cain - it yearns for a heavy af metal cover AND to be sampled for some real old-school hip-hop. Good, interesting song nonetheless. Something in the Night - uhhh, well sung but didn't leave a mark. Candy's Room - not that sweet. Racing in the Street - melancholic and all that. The Promised Land - not too impressed. The Factory - evocative of the theme. Streets of Fire - has a hint of edge I liked. Prove It All Night - meh. Darkness On the Edge of Town - the ultimate song wasn't as strong as I had hoped.

OH MY LORDY LORD LORD BRO ANOTHER BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN ALBUM only marginally better than born in the usa and i only feel like its bc this time i was prepared for what i was getting into if i wanted to a raspy voice complain abt losing his wife and car i would tune into a conservative podcast instead badlands was a promising start, darkness on the edge of town was also nice does anyone under the age of 40 actually enjoy bruce springsteen 2.5/5

Gran voz la de el, las canciones no estan mal pero no me encantaron.

Meh. Didn't really like it much

Third Springsteen album for me on this list, and it's beginning to get old. I have nothing but respect for the Boss, but most of his production is not really my cup of tea. I liked Adam Raised a Cain, but the rest is just middle-of-the-road soft rock, often made worse by cheesy saxophones and keyboards. I appreciate his voice and the mood he's trying to convey, but it sounds too irredeemably 80s for me to enjoy. It's a pity that this list, by pounding me with so many Springsteen albums, is starting to make me dislike an artist I initially found very tolerable. 4/10

Honestly, it’s more enjoyable than the stadium rock of Born in the USA. Still, aside from a few moments, maybe a couple of tracks, I just can’t really get into it. I recently watched the documentary about the recording of We Are the World, and the guy genuinely seems like a really nice person. But that’s not enough for me to go beyond 2 stars.

*mumbles* yeehaw

SO boring. Some of the most uninteresting, safe, and generic music there is

muy white american boy zzzz

Not my jam

Do I... Do I hate Bruce Springsteen? I think I hate Bruce Springsteen. Crazy.

much better than the previous one i have listened to im probably not gonna come back to it but it felt much more experimental (sometimes) which was pleasant i gave it a chance (2.5)

bastante meh, nada malo pero tampoco nada bueno

Lyrically the man can tell a story however I do not enjoy his voice. Musically certainly falls into soft/pop rock category. A couple of nice guitar riffs and sax solos.👍

Boring

Pretty mid range Bruce. Don’t think it’ll get another listen

I'm more of a Billy Joel kind of guy.

No me gustó. Aunque intenté todavía no encontré algo que me gustará. Sorry not sorry

Very earnest and moody. A lack of tunes and interesting songs to match this earnestness though. Great name for an album but thats the sum total of it all.

I'm not a boss guy. There's like 2 songs on here that could probably rip live if it was a bar band and the singer wasn't so polished, but I don't live in Jersey and I'm not into cars.

I've never got Bruce Springsteen and I still don't. Parts of it made me think of Vic Reeves.

I'm baffled why this isn't clicking with me. I've never been a Springsteen guy, but I would struggle to tell you why. A lot of artists I love find him massively influential to their sound (shoutout to the Gaslight Anthem!). I didn't grow up with Springsteen's music and I'm very far from New Jersey, so I have no nostalgic connection to him or his songs about growing up in the Garden State. The working-class anthems here sound massive, with a variety of instruments adding to the big sound. His voice is unique. It is filled to the rim with passion and that's all I need out of a vocalist. Not everyone has to be Jeff Buckley in the vocals department for me to enjoy their music. Its only during 'Something In The Night' that I find his vocal quirks irritating. I've given this a few listens and I'm not pulled in. I don't hate it, but I'm not emotionally moved by this at all. 'Badlands' and 'Prove It All Night' are the best tracks here, but there's nothing here that I'll be rushing back to.

Aluks ihan lepposaa meininkiä mutta toi naukuminen alko hiertää kunnolla levyn puolivälissä, ei jatkoon!

Bruce Springsteen, 3eme album => 2/5 Rock très standard, comme les 2 précédents.

I don’t like this voice in this album but I know he can do better, especially after checking out his album Born in the USA. I quite didn’t like the songs here but I am guessing because I am not a guy from 1980s New Jersey who enjoys dive bars after a long day of working in the yard. This is working class music and it’s fine, just not for me.

I guess Im just one of those people that dont see what all the hype is about. Run of the mill classic rock sound with some twinkly piano bits thrown in to gussy it up. It honestly feels like a character in a movie about a "working class singer songwritter" but not a great movie. A decent movie worth watching but no need to go back to revisit.

I’m not a boss man

love the passion but he is just a shouty man

Anstrengend

Neiii takk

Good ol' Bruce.

I know it’s important but whewww, wanted to get through that quickly.

I never realized how much this man cannot sing.

It's really easy to overdose on Springsteen

I think this is the most tolerable Springsteen album but its still not something I really enjoy.

There's just something about Springsteen that I don't enjoy. It's not one element that I can pinpoint, it's more that it's sort of dull, even when it isn't.

2 from me

Going rogue on this one with a lower score. Yes, this is a generational talent and yes it's lyrically amazing... it's just not my sound preference and is very predictable dad-rock. I've seen Bruce live and had an incredible time (won 2 tickets, limo ride, and dinner at PF Changs for winning a Guitar Hero contest back around 2009!). The album just falls flat for me.

Not as instantly memorable.

This was pretty mediocre actually surprised it made the list. 2 1/2 good songs maybe. Adam raised Caine is a straight groaner. He has better songs in his repertoire that express the exact same things. Pretty one note slow and half baked retread ideas.

Badlands sounds like Meatloaf’s blue collar step brother. Like the majority of Springsteen its fine, straight down the middle rock. Adam Raised the Cain is more straight Bruce, but somehow lowers the interest level as a result From here on in it’s pretty much Springsteen by numbers

So it turns out I don't really like Bruce's voice very much. This project has been full of surprises. It was alright. I didn't particularly love anything and I didn't particularly hate anything: it just wasn't for me. I liked Adam Raised A Cain, though I couldn't tell you why. 2/5

The disparity between Springsteen's superstardom and the quality of his music is wild. Sure, he's got some classic songs, but taken as a whole, this album is just not that good. Production value, lyrics, song structure...sheesh.

Mumbled and melodramatic delivery of so-so songs of working class troubles. Very few bright spots on this edge of town.

Meh, 2 stars. It sounded like some of the Adam Sandler songs lol

Eh, not hella my vibe

Stories of working class and troubled relationships with fathers - shoot it up my veins, right now. I like the little titbit that people noticed, that every song on side one of the original LP has a corresponding track on side two in the same sequence. Favs: Badlands, Adam Raised a Cain, Factory, Prove It All Night, Darkness on the Edge of Town

Not the best of Bruce

I just don't enjoy the vocal style of this artist.

I'm just not a big Bruce Springsteen guy tbh

I can see why people love his music I just personally don't

Not my jam

Favourite Songs: Adam Raised A Cain

* Notes: Really not a fan of Bruce’s vocals in this album, it sounds like he’s mumbling for half of it… some great moments though like in Streets of Fire * Overall: Not really my personal cup of tea. Bruce is obviously influential in his sound, but not something I would return to with the exception of a couple of songs off of it

ive listened to better songs of his

Really not my cup of tea.

42 minutes is a proper length for an album (especially this one it’s truly all i can handle) and idk why but i can only think of bruce springsteen as a very “american” musician. i’m listening to this while in walmart and i feel like i should be wearing a “don’t tread on me” shirt. this whole time i thought he was jewish but after a lil google searching he’s really irish italian. i think bruce’s voice sounds like he has cloth shoved in the back of his throat. i guess that’s just late 70s to 80s ~rock~ this album is all about the white american struggle. i’m honestly bored. best tracks: adam raised a cain, streets of fire

This is for someone. I am not that someone.

Springsteen has some great albums but this was so so. He mumbled on too many songs.

Не люблю Брюса. Он не всемогущий

Beste Lieder: Something in the night

13. boring, worse than born in the usa

Simply not a fan of his voice, wasnt particularly fond of any of the songs on the album either. If I had to pick one it'd be Adam Raised a Cain. Only not giving it 1 star as I don't think itd be fair just cause I'm not a fan of his voice :p

songs used to be so long, which is nice, but it makes it hard for me to get through them the first time 😝 nothing stood out, but I understand why people would like it.

Aside from Clarence on sax and Max on drums, this is a pretty tedious Bruce Springsteen album. And what's with the marbles in his mouth while singing? We get it, you read Grapes of Wrath. Let's not lose our minds over it. Don't over think it. The only two of his albums that belong on here are Born to Run and Born in the U.S.A. Basically, until Bruce puts the word "Born" in another album title, just leave the other albums off.

A couple of good songs, kept avoiding listening. Nowhere near as good as Born in USA.

Didn’t resonate with me:/

I really did not care for this. I've liked other Bruce things but this one bored me to tears

I imagine people cite the lyrics of this album as one of its main strengths. They're distinctly American and must really resonate with people over there. They don't do much for me though, neither do Springsteen's vocals, and the actual music itself is pretty plain. Not bad, nice enough, but it's not for me. Maybe it will grow on me?

I've always wondered how someone with a singing voice as unpleasant and unintelligible as Bruce Springsteen's could become so popular, but after listening to this album I have to admit that my opinion of him has improved a bit. Specifically, on the tracks "Adam Raised a Cain" and "Streets of Fire", the way he fully leans into the rawness of his voice works surprisingly well, something I didn't think was possible. These tracks also fix the issue of Springsteen's unintelligible singing style by making half the lyrics just the song title. While this album did surpass my expectations, I don't think it's good. The ballads are still awful, and it's almost comical how bad Springsteen sounds on them.

Ok at best…

Springsteen er ikke bra. Grusom stemme. Musikken ellers er helt ok

Didn't really like this one. 2 stars

Not a fan of the Boss: too melodramatic for me

Don't like this

Boring

I liked “Born In The USA” much better than this album. Bruce really mumbled his lyrics and it was really hard to understand him. When I could understand him, the lyrics were really depressing. The only song I liked was “Candy’s Room”. Max Weinberg’s drums coupled with Roy Brittan’s piano made this song sound epic.

I've never really understood the hype around Bruce. Maybe it's just not for me, but it seems indistinguishable from anything you'd hear on a classic rock station or playlist.

No, DO shoot the piano player. Bruce would be so much better if this tinkling motherfucker would step away. So annoying. And maybe take the sax with you, while you're at it. Cease and desist! Maybe modern technology can remove them for me and then I can actually give the boss a fair listen.

Some catchy tunes, but still not aboard the Bruce Springsteen train..

I get it but I don’t care

My third Springsteen album from the list, and as they go on, they get worse for me. I quite liked Born to Run, although it didn't really change my mind on being lukewarm on Springsteen. Never was a fan of Springsteen's music, much prefer Bob Seger as far as Americana/Heartland Rock goes. But couldn't deny how good the record was, and gave that a four. Biggest issue was Springsteen's vocals on some tracks just not being great, but it wasn't a huge issue. For Born in the USA, still a solid record, if a little too poppy for me, giving it a 3. However, this album basically has everything I dislike about Springsteen. The terrible vocals (Almost through the entire album. Sounds like he has cotton in his mouth, or he recorded his vocals immediately after getting dental work done and his mouth is still numb. Just awful singing), the jangly piano. This is going to sound weird/stupid as hell but there's a femininity to his music that I just don't like. The music just does not have the masculine grit I want from this type of music that a Bob Seger seems to have. Which is weird because I usually have the opposite problem with bands. If something's too meathead masculine, I hate it. But anyways, yeah. Perhaps it's just hitting me at the wrong time, but I did not like this record and it's just a perfect storm of everything I don't like from Springsteen. Hopefully Nebraska hits better, with what I understand, a more stripped down, darker vibe. But honestly Springsteen doesn't need five albums. I'd cut two of them, and if it were up to me, I'd start with this one personally.

I gotta admit, I don’t get it. I had heard about this album and was so ready to enjoy it (I don’t know Bruce’s discography much) but found this underwhelming. There’s some good storytelling, but that’s about it? I didn’t find it very exceptional, mostly just…inoffensive. Maybe in other circumstances I’d rate this a 3 and I’m just reacting to high expectations. I don’t know, but each time I relisten to bits of it I’m less enthusiastic. The piano riff on “Something in the Night” reminded me of Candi Staton’s “Young Hearts Run Free,” which just made me realize I’d rather be listening to that.

Of the Bruce Springsteen albums I've heard, this was one of the better ones. Fully deserving of 2 stars for not being quite as awful as some of the others I've heard. The music isn't actually that bad, it's the mumble vocals that kill it for me.

Hello Bruce, my old friend. This is your third appearance on my list and I don't think I'm going to get anything further out of the experience of listening to you. Adam Raised a Cain was pretty intolerable, otherwise I mostly found this boring.

Bruce can be a bit MUCH sometimes

not so mine...

Mostly ehh to bad for me. Did enjoy "Adam Raised A Cain" and "The Promised Land" though.

Ga meg ingenting

I’ve never been a big Bruce fan but can recognize his influence for sure.

- I like Something in the Night - I think this was a pretty good/neutral 1st album to get - I don't see myself listening to it again - It is very easy to digest but I would give it a 2 out of 5 stars or like 5/10

I keep trying with Bruce and keep coming up with the same answer: his music is not for me.

Pretty much the most generic sounding rock imaginable on this album. Not sure if something just doesn't click with me for some of Bruce's albums but it has been really weird that I have given 2 of them a 4 and 2 of them a 2. Wonder if there were just albums where he just absolutely mailed it in for the payday.

Okay nothing special

Not sure if I love or hate Bruce sometimes. I can tell you that today I didn't particularly enjoy listening to this.

Just not a springsteen guy.

It's okay. I've never understood the hype around Bruce Springsteen but for those who enjoy him this still follows his style.

Don't know what to say about this one. Don't know what I was supposed to get out of it. Nothing caught my attention. The whole thing was very well produced but had no interesting ideas and was overall pretty underwhelming. I thought his previous album with its more prominent Wall of Sound production worked quite a bit better. 5/10

Previously, i'd barely heard any of Bruce Springsteen's songs, besides the most famous ones. I struggle to appreciate Bruce Springsteen's songs. This album, even more. There is nothing wrong with any of the songs, I am struggling with coming with any meaningful critique, but I am still not enjoying it. I am just not feeling anything when listening to it.

My favorite thing about Bruce Springsteen is his love for Elvis. Absolute fanboy. It's a treat to hear his infectious joy in Netflix Elvis documentaries. I don't care for Springsteen's music though.

Tedious and boring. Every song sounds the same, an endless rhythmic mumbling. Springsteen has some great hits but this album is not his best work. This one is for serious fans of The Boss.

niet veel op aan te merken.. maar om een of andere reden ben ik geen fan van The Boss

Not my thing, sounds really great though and Adam Raised a Cain is pretty sick

Solid album but not my favourite of his. Enjoyed the title track the most.

His fourth album. Rock. Mumbley Joe mumbles to us something about living, loving, working and fucking can all get a bit rough. At least I think that's what he said before he went back to Mumbleton, N.Y. A bit dull and those vocals... yikes !

The same opinion I have for nearly all of his albums: great writing but insufferable vocals.

Pretty decent dad rock, but it doesn't do much for me.

Chatinho chatinho

Bruce Springsteen is musical pizza. 90% of the time it's fine. Nothing objectionable, nothing exciting, gets the job done. 5% of the time it's painfully bad (see, e.g., Bruce's vocal on Something in the Night), and 5% of the time it's really, really good. An exciting experience that you tell all your friends about. To all those who sing the praises of the music itself (here's looking at you New Jersey), I think that opinion tells far more about the people singing the praises than the singer himself. The theme is blue collar worker. And that's it. It's stereotypically me-and-my-whole-family-work-hard-don't-like-change-and-won't-address-the-reasons-everything-pisses-us-off (look, it's like a 90% male audience we're talking about here). This album specifically (and apparently Bruce gets 5 on the list) has none of his big hits, was not terribly influential, and is virtually identical to all of his others musically. 2

If you asked me 20 years ago, I would have liked this album. If you ask me now, I don’t think I like Bruce Springsteen anymore.

had never heard a single one of these songs.... did he say KENNEDYS room??!?!?!?!?!?!??!

I wanted to like it, but I didn't :(

Overall: 3/10 I tried. I really did. I wanted to finally have it click so I could experience what everyone else seems to be enjoying, but I have to be true to myself when I say that I just don't like Bruce Springsteen's music. I find the songs schmaltzy and corny and it doesn't help that he sounds like a dying horse to me. That's not to say there aren't moments of brilliance to be found. Badlands was a good way to open the album and I also really liked the outro to Racing in the Street. But these great moments are few and far between. Hopefully after listening to more of his albums I'll change my opinion, but I'd be lying if I said that I'm not dreading getting to those albums. Fav Song: Badlands

Ehhhhh he's da boss y'know???

eh, it was alright

Not super dynamic to me... predictable and a little whine-y

21/1089 Can’t say that this is my cup of tea, his vocal style isn’t really for me and I can’t say I relate a lot to the vibe Badlands and Adam Raised a Cain really didn’t do much for me, I can’t say sort of see the appeal if this is your style i guess, it’s not “bad” necessarily Something in the Night was decent as a rocky power ballad, his voice suited the sound for me in that song the rest of the album just kind of went by. I appreciate the artistry but it’s dated in the wrong way for me fave: Something In The Night i guess least fave: Adam Raised a Cain 1 star or 35/100

life in middle america sounds very dull

We had Born to Run recently, and there’s something about the songwriting, production, and the majestic-sounding band, especially the keys and brass, that really make it stand out as a great record. This one just doesn’t work the same magic - in fact it sounds like a compilation of b-sides to my ears. It’s pretty plodding in places and he often doesn’t sound like he has the energy to get through a whole song (e.g. Something in the Night and Racing in the Street). I’m not convinced it belongs in the list - I’m either really missing something or it’s an admin error.

not sure if bruce is growing on me or if i actually liked this one slightly more than the others weve had from him but this is the most tolerable one so far. still not good but better

Disco fraco!

This is to help the run of boring albums

Elevator music for the most annoying people you know.

Still don’t like Springsteen

It was a boring album. Nothing from the songs caught my attention.

dad rock

bog standard bruce, its fine I guess

not my favorite bruce

I don't like this Bruce Springsteen flavor. Not for me, thanks.

If you listen closely to the background of Badlands you can hear late era Brandon Flowers literally being born. This sounds to me on a lot of songs like someone doing an intentionally bad Bruce Springsteen impression but it’s actually the boss? Wild

Boring.

Not bad, just very generic to me.

sounds like Bruce, not my sound tho, 2/5

This one absolutely did not work for me, which kind of shocks me because I consider Born to Run, just a few years earlier, to be an all-timer

++: Adam Raised a Cain, Streets of Fire, Darkness on the Edge of Town +: Badlands, Racing in the Street, The Promised Land, Prove It All Night +-: Something in the Night, Candy's Room, Factory 6,0/10

I’m sorry, not memorable. I had to skip a couple snoozefests.

Usual dull drivel from the "Boss". The River Detectives version of Factory is much better as well.

I just find it difficult to get into mostly because of the singing

Hard to understand him

J - 2/5 Best Track - "Badlands" F - 1/5

Honestly, this is a very boring album. Like i get the appeal but it's just not my thing.

Who likes this trash? Every song tries so hard to be a ballad and they all fall flat.

hoje eu to meio azedo e escutei muito álbum ruim esse não facilitou. VEREDITO: É RUIM, ASSIM COMO TODA A DISCOGRAFIA DO SPRINGSTEEN

I think this is one of those “you just had to be there” albums. I don’t recognize this country as a place with stable factory jobs and where hard honest work is rewarded with a living wage and a pension. Idk why he’s so angry that sounds pretty nice to me

I tried I’m just not a fan

After being told about how great Springsteen is my whole life my expectations were high this missed the mark pretty forgettable album nothing particularly special about this

not really my thing

Springsteen sounds like he wants to be hard rock and jangly piano tune Bob Dylan at the same time. I personally don’t really think it works.

Not a Springsteen guy

I didn’t love this

Right off the bat, I can say this project is way better than the last Bruce Springsteen album that this list gave me (The Rising). Plus, musically I enjoyed it but once again I come to the same problem with Bruce. This is an entirely personal and subjective opinion, but I don’t care for his voice at all and I find the man to be incredibly preachy. The good news for this album is that it’s not quite as preachy as his other work. And as always I appreciate that his point of view on a lot of these songs are not what they appear to be. Much like how dumb republicans think “Born in the USA” glorifies America, I could easily see those same people listening to “Factory” and thinking to themselves “yah factory jobs! That’s what we need, bring those back!” So I can appreciate the album for that, but honestly it’s just not for me. Politically, Bruce seems like an intelligent and compassionate person, but I just don’t really like his music. To be fair I tried.

Never really felt Springsteen. IDK something about him has never really connected with me. Maybe I live too far away from New Jersey or something. 4/10

I really just don't get Bruce. This album was an order of magnitude better than Born in the USA as the music had some more dynamics to it this time. Largely, however, the slow rock ballads are all pretty boring to me. I was clicking through the album a second time to pick a song for my list and each time one started, I was intrigued, just to want to move on by the end of the first chorus. Something in the night comes to mind, such a beautiful opening that fades away to me. It's a shame because this is probably the first mainstream artist on this list I just can't really appreciate. If I'm picking a favorite, it's probably Factory because thematically it's very strong as a blue collar anthem.

Some decent tunes but a little rambling and intensely USA for my taste

I preferred this Springsteen album to Both to Run but I am still very much not a fan, so giving it a 2. Adam Raised A Cain was the best track of the lot

It's Bruce. Bruce isn't good.

Great production value. Not my favorite voice on an artist, but I can see where he became an American sensation. "Heartland Rock" as a genre makes sense. Really not for me, but not a bad artist. I can respect the quality, and the appeal, but this is a personal 2.

5/1001 I never understood the appeal of “The Boss.” Nothing about any of his music is special to me. His voice is remarkably awkward. The band is solid but nothing stands out as great. The lyrics are simple and basic. 45 minute album seemed like one long draw out song - each song sounds borderline indistinguishable from the last. There’s nothing terrible about this album, but there’s also nothing good.

Aaaaand back to Boring Bruce. Remember what I said earlier? The interesting thing with 1001albums is that there are artists that are way too represented in the selection, so you can stop bothering about reviews and just copy/paste what you wrote previously. I still don't like this kind of generic, very American pop-rock.

Ethel Cain outdid. There's not really any relation between her and this guy, I just wanted to mention.

really struggled to get through. I tried, honestly, but after numerous corny ballads I just couldn't do it anymore

Ga meg ingenting

This is the worst Bruce Springsteen album I've heard. There are redeeming qualities, but it lacks the charm of his other work. How does he sound 70 years old in his 20s? Best Songs: Racing in the Street Worst Songs: Badlands, Something in the Night, Prove It All Night

I didn't like it

Ah ouais mais Springsteen c'est nul en fait.

Weird melodramatic singing. Pretty generic rock generally. Not Bruce's best.

Sleepytime 70's rock being sung by your drunk uncle at karaoke. He'll drive home later in his and Rob Collins himself and your last memory will be how his voice was completely identical as the drunken rambling of Springsteen on Badlands or Something in the Night. This cunt cannot sing for his fucking life. Is English Bruce Springsteen's second language or does he have a cleft palate or something? I genuinely couldn't understand a fucking word this rat looking motherfucker had to say. The only songs on this record I could make out what he was singing (which was far and few) were okay, but they felt so meticulously generic of 70's radio rock that I wouldn't even know it was Springsteen, let along come back for a second listen. The only song where he was coherent was Streets of Fire (which I will touch on in a moment) - the only solidly good song on this album. Leaving aside Springsteen's tenuous grasp on communicating in English, the musicianship isn't half bad. The pianos play well, there's some mean guitar solos, and the drums have a nice reverb to them. Genuinely, the guitar solos on this go so hard it probably saves my review from a 1. Somehow the best guitar solo on the album, Streets of Fire, has the lowest stream ratings on Spotify - also despite being probably the best song on the album. Still better than his 9/11 album, whatever the fuck that was called, (it's somewhere in my Lowest Rated Albums list) but that's like saying stepping in dogshit is better than stepping in horseshit. At least the dogshit (Darkness OTET in this case) is dry & stinky versus wet, offensively bad, and day ruining.

Boring

Meh, dosadno, ali nije mi najgore što sam čula tu. Imam malo nostalgični vajb uvijek od njega, ali ovaj album mi je stvarno dosadnjikav. 2/5, 3/10.

I think I was expecting more from the boss. His vocals on this are awful, so I assume we will get better albums later on.

Dull. Next…

Kinda boring. I don’t get Springsteen

Boooriiiing

Easily forgettable

I prefer Bruce on the Tacky Souvenirs of Post Revolutionary America and I argue that record should be on 1001 Albums Before you Die over this album which is token Boss. Tacky Souvenirs of Post Revolutionary America takes Born in the USA; I am certain that turd is also on this list, and uses the music with terrible singling and keyboard effects over the actual recording and it is infinitely superior to anything Bruce has done outside of Nebraska. Bruce is T Top rock to its core, you need a Camaro or a Trans-Am to really enjoy this cheesy commercial trash. The sad reality is Bruce has one good record, Nebraska; the rest of the catalog is grossly overrated to include this overrated record. I could have died without this one. The man who sang about rich and poor felt he was too much of a king for a DUI in a National Park, The Boss is the The Butthole at this point. I knew he would make it, he is a commercial music god, but this record is not essential. Not even close to essential, its kinda poop. Here are some much better albums that are not considered 1001 Before you Die from 1978: - Blondie Parallel Lines 4.5 out of 5 - The Cars - Self Titled - The Rolling Stones - Some Girls - Wire - Chairs Missing - Bob Seger - Stranger in Town - Patti Smith - Easter The reality is simple, this is a commercially successful from '78 and in '85 was on the charts for 15 weeks. Its commercial pop music, nothing too special honestly and its on the list because you just cant leave out The Butthole Bruce Springsteen.

This album stated and after 10 tracks it was over without really noticing. Yes, I was doing other things in the same time but still this didn't catch my attention basically at all.

Never been a big fan of Bruce's, his singing is a bit mumbling and music is very dependant on lyrics, which are another thing I don't really emphasize too much. I don't really get why this is so revered and held in high regard. I find it quite a boring of an album.

sorry but I kind of hate this? I don't know why. his voice is bad and the songs are lifeless. it got a little better. I liked "Factory" and "Prove It All Night"

Never got this dude, his music does nothing for me.

Not for me

I have such mixed feelings about the Boss. Listening to Badlands right now and I'm annoyed. But I also see Adam Raised a Cain and Candy's Room are on this album, which are such great songs. This album so very much wasn't for me. I reached my daily recommended value of bombast midway through the first song. I ended up skipping around the second half and didn't find any reason to stop. I didn't even like Candy's Room as much as I remember.

I liked this one, not my favorite jazz album but I will probably add this into my jazz rotation (such as it is).

Heartland Rock eller Rust Belt Country. Kartoffel - Kartoffel. Selv om man ikke blive slået i hovedet af en saxofon på det her album, så er det bare alt for meget E Street Band lyd. Særligt keyboarded er ulideligt

To be honest I only got halfway through this one. Good but not for me.

It's pretty good. Probably nothing I'd come back to, but I don't think it's a bad album. I don't think it's his best work, but still. They did all begin to blend together in the end though...

i’m gonna lie, this is fire

Pre-listening thoughts: you know that version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town that Bruce Springsteen sang and there’s only a crappy live recording of it where he sounds like he’s just kind of bumbling through it musically in a gravely register of his voice? That is how all of Bruce Springsteen’s songs sound to me. Sorry. He ain’t my boss Post/during listening thoughts: can he PLEASE enunciate???? I cannot understand like 50% of his lyrics (which are supposed to be his strong suit) bc of his singing style. He sounds like when theater kids do impersonations of drunk people despite them never having been drunk before. Like just slurring his words sloppily but his flow and tune remain intact. The instrumentation is decent. Every song is like “i grew up poor working for my daddy and I fell in love with a southern beauty and we grew old and were happy even though we were poor. Hell yeah America!”. I just don’t think Bruce Springsteen will ever be for me. 4/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: Badlands Least fav tracks: Candy’s Room

2nd song was good 2.5

Not my boss.

I'm just not a Springsteen fan. This feels like your parents' love jams. I haven't found a song that wasn't Philadelphia that I liked. 2* He's extra talkey/mumbley in this one.

I've long struggled to articulate my issues with Springsteen. There's something decent there but I've never got on with the constipated vocals and sax. But I've just realised the biggest issue is the character. Just like Arthur Miller, his tragic hero is the downtrodden American working man who is flawed. I can't look past the flaws so I can't empathise with the character. Also, rock music that doesn't rock.

I'm bored out of my mind.

Boring. I don't mind Springsteen's voice or his songwriting, but overall this does nothing for me. Boring.

The boss just ain't for me. 2/5

I wanted so badly to love this. I like the idea of Springsteen. I love "Born to Run." I love the fact that he has Max Weinberg as his drummer and for the longest time had Clarence Clemons as his saxophonist. I love the fact that there's a sax in his band at all. I love so much about the idea of Springsteen. But this was boring, and that sucks because it didn't need to be. There are bright spots, to be sure. But one cardinal sin for me has always been that if you're going to put out a song longer than four minutes, it had better not be a slow ballad. Because that gets so boring and feels so much longer than it actually is. And Bruce does this multiple times on this album and I just can't get there with him. I might've been able to had he been a little more intelligible. People complain about mumble rap today. they complain about singers who are impossible to understand. I've never heard anyone level that accusation at Springsteen before, but they should. There are so many songs on this album that I just can't understand a word he's saying. They're pretty, they're interesting in their own way, but I just cannot understand him for the life of me. It was funny at first, but after a while I just found it annoying. It's a shame this didn't hit harder for me. The Boss is such an icon, and his musicianship and showmanship are unquestionable. But I just didn't really find myself caring about this album. Bummer. I loved the more upbeat, rock stuff (see below), but on the whole, this was a snooze. Two stars. Standout Tracks: Adam Raised a Cain, Candy's Room, The Promised Land, Prove it All Night

Bruce is a great song writer that’s about it.

Look, if I wanted a "tough" guy from New Jersey to sing about Cain, it's gonna be Danzig NOT Springsteen. Can't handle this mediocre "i'm just a hard workin' guy" shtick. Favorite song: Prove It All Night - kinda has a power pop sound to it Least favorite: the rest, but especially Something in the Night

Forgettable

Sorry but I don't really get it. The bombastic 80s Springsteen somewhat ok, patriotic and singalongable but this too-cool-for-school, drawling unremarkable Springsteen with odd saxophone interludes, I just got nothing from it in two listens and couldn't hack a third.

Springsteen is one of those guys that I get why people like but I can't relate at all. I grew up very America-adjacent and this type of music never really meshed with me because I never experienced any of the kind of stuff he talks about either directly or through my parents. And that's before you get to his voice and singing which I don't like in the first place. The execution of all these songs is fine; the only thing really performed badly is the ending of "Something In The Night" and it's entirely Bruce being unable to hit the right notes. I could do without the saloon style piano and sustained off key notes overall. Musically Springsteen has his own style that includes those things and still has countless imitators, I just don't really enjoy it or find it that interesting. As far as "pretend working class dude that is insanely from Jersey" goes I'll take Bon Jovi over this.

I would rather listen to white light

i just cant get into the specific brand of groove that seems to have been popular in this era of music. its slow and trudging (qualities that work really well with heavy music), but it is ultimately uninteresting when utilised for almost every track on a rock album. something in the night is really good however, and i will certainly be coming back to that song in the future.

It was alright. I see why people like him, just not a huge fan of his voice.

It was fine, I've never really got into The Boss and this hasn't made any difference.

MIDDDD

Didn't realise it was possible to simultaneously mumble and be flat. Springsteen has proved me wrong.

Not for me

Meh, OK. I don't 'get' Bruce Springsteen. Did someone check on Bruce during Something In The Night? I think he stubbed his toe.

Two stars

Not a fan

Too generic. I never found anything interesting about Bruce Springsteen. It's just too "american" for me I guess.

No es el disco que más me ha interesado de Bruce Springsteen, está Badlands y ninguna de las otras canciones me ha parecido destacable, supongo que no es para mí.

Perhaps I was too harsh on Born in the USA...

heard the 1st song and was like yeah finally something abit more upbeat. pretty much took a direct train to shite town after that.

Perhaps I just wasn't in the mood at the time of listening, or perhaps some may feel I'm just not giving this album much of a chance. But I have never particularly understood the musical appeal of Bruce Springsteen. I mean I do to some degree, but I don't understand how he has transcended to the legacy level he is at today. I thought this album might turn my opinions around when I was forced to actually listen to a full LP, but it didn't. Almost nothing clicked with me here. The lyrics were... fine? They flow well enough and are fairly uplifting. But the instrumentation is still that quintessential heartland rock Bruce Springsteen sound that just doesn't interest me whatsoever. Sure - it's got nice melodies, efficient musicianship, and slick production. But 'Darkness On The Edge Of Town' is very much a product of that late 70's/early 80's radio rotation. Hell, you can even say it's very much a product of every rock radio station today - as the hosts rev up a Springsteen track for the drive home from the office. Thank god we can load up streaming services in our cars nowadays. Springsteen was influential for his lyrics and how he was able to relate to the "everyman" and their struggles, which I can totally respect; and it's all over this LP. But musically I always found him and his band to be very bog standard, bringing nothing truly unique to the table. I thought about giving this album a 1/5. However, I'll admit it isn't egregiously bad or anything; so it gets bumped to a 2/5. I'm just simply not a fan of the sound the "Boss" goes for. Heartland rock just isn't my jam.

the instrumental is nice, but nothing transcendent, i'm a little bit bored. not my style, everything sounded the same to me and no lyrics really resonated with me

Had never listened to Springsteen, nor did I know who he was, so it was nice to have the chance to listen to someone/thing I truly didn't know anything about. The vocals aren't to my tastes though, and the album, as a whole, is a bit boring. I liked the slower songs best: Something in the Night, Racing in the Street, Streets of Fire. 2/5

Must be pre-the boss. Miserable.

This felt like one long song

Sounds like Ben Folds.

Not my thing - pretty boring. I accidentally left my phone connected to the car bluetooth in the bottom of my bag, and nearly had to listen to this album again - I chose silence and being with my own thoughts over listening to another round with Bruce.

Bruce is an icon and obviously a class guy. He captured the zeitgeist in the way only a very few people ever do. He is his own genre and I've loved reading other people's reviews talking about what Bruce means to them and New Jersey. His classic songs are American standards and familiar across the world. But I listened to the album and it didn't really grab me. The storytelling is fine, but I'm not in the American rust belt and it doesn't resonate. The voice isn't really very good and the music is pretty average with chugging guitars and a lack of hooks. I'm sure other people think I'm mad and wrong but it's not really great.

The boss’ voice started to annoy me a fair amount after a whole album.

It never gets better. :|

Nunca vou entender o apelo desse cara

Badlands and The Promised Land are decent, catchy songs. I don’t really care about the rest. Kind of boring

Rather generic 70s American popish rockish album? Some variation in song feeling with a couple interesting moments. I like Candy's Room for the guitar riff, and Darkness on the Edge of Town has interesting ideas in the story. Not particularly suited to my tastes.

We all work in a factory

not my style

borrrrriiiiiinnnnnggggg

I expected more from you Bruce.

Why does this album sound like Springsteen doing an impression of himself? The songwriting is strong, if you like this style, but it’s a bit much for me (it does come close to selling me, though). The vocals just take it over the edge here and turn me off. One day I’ll grow up and enjoy Springsteen. Not today.

This wasn't as awesome as I'd hoped, I expected a lot more energy but found myself pretty bored.

He really wants to come off epic but I'm sorry he just comes off as bland and lacking an edge

Each artist has their formula for success, but Bruce’s is so depressing. Hometown, work, car, girl, repeat. And on this album has to be the worlds slowest song about a car race.

this is probably blasphemous and un-American to say but I think Bruce is mediocre. some good songs but most of them are meh.

Can't get that excited by this

Its Bruce being Bruce

I can’t do Bruce. Bruce. Stop.

4.5/10

-Idk his voice annoys me in some of these songs -It definitely felt easy for me to separate the good songs from the bad ones but overall not really my thing -Favorites are Badlands and The Promised Land

Never been a Springsteen fan, but I thought maybe an older album could convert me. But as soon as I heard “ I got a 69 Chevy…” I was out.

Bruce Springsteen rock. Not his most well known, but acceptable filler of his portfolio.

Not my thing

Rach says I listen to Bruce Springsteen wrong. She says that the beauty is in the lyrics rather than the composition, but I’ve generally always had a hard time honing in on the words rather than the music itself. I say that to explain why I felt this album was quite dull, whereas if you’re a lyric lover then you might feel quite different about this. For me, I just didn’t find anything particularly interesting.

This suffers from the fact that I’ve heard his material from his peak. This takes a backseat to his later material.

Bruce just doesn't do it for me.

I've never listened to a Bruce Springsteen album before, so I was excited to finally give him a real chance. I can see why people love him, but I don't find anything in this album very memorable.

This is a weird record. My first time listening to a Springsteen record in its entirety and I don’t like it. The drums and guitars are unimaginative and bland. The singing is a precursor to mumble rap. I bought tickets to see this guy live at my baseball stadium later this year, thinking it’d be cool to see a music icon at one of his [likely] last shows, and I think I’m going to try and sell them now.

Sam: 6.1 Alex: 5.3 Total: 5.7/10

Very American dad rock Last song was cool

I am not the target audience for this album. The style actually reminded me of a grittier Meatloaf, which I didn’t expect! Rating: 2

Não consigo gostar desse tipo de rock americanão. Ainda mais quando as guitarras não são muito marcantes. Entendo a importância mas não ouviria nunca.

I just feel like I’m being yelled at the whole time.

Decent and ok

I've never been a big Bruce Springsteen fan. I take nothing away from him as an artist, but few things he ever did connected with me. I pushed my record money in other directions. That said, this is a Bruce Springsteen album...and it sounds just like him...and most of his other stuff.

Incredibly boring

This was just okay

The cover photo with that thousand yard stare always reminded me of the Boss bossing it with too much coke. When I listen to some of his vocals on this he sounds stoned out of his face too. Is it just me? My dad loved this, I can see why, well played blues/ folky rock music, crystal clear production - I mean those drums! The drummer must have had mics placed everywhere, it's amazing you don't hear the sound of one accidentally being mistaken for a random percussion thing. That would never have been allowed past the quality control (I bet his coke was uncut too). The Boss would have pierced the scared drummer with those cold dead eyes, pulled the tape out of the recorder and had that take burned in front of him I'd like to imagine. However, this is a pretty solid album from BS, but I just don't like the style of music. It gets a high 2 for its merits.

He might be legendary story teller, but the music itself just nothing for me. 🤷

Ashamed to be an NJ native that doesn't like Bruce

I'm really not a Bruce fan. I tried twice on this one to see if it resonated. Her just doesn't do it for me. Not bad. Just not good enough to get me to focus.

I’m sorry it’s just really not my vibe lol

Not my favorite

dosadno, sry

BORING

Overall I wasn't as impressed with this compared to Born in the USA. Some solid melodies and instrumental work but I didn't enjoy the harsher vocal style, felt more forced and unnatural. Top tracks: Racing in thr Street, Prove It All Night
