Reviews (page 9 of 12)
I probably should like Springsteen but this really feels like it's not going to penetrate my brain. Nothing at all really stands out or grips me at all.
Classic Bruce but not really memorable.
This feels like an album wedged between two much better albums. Still, it's okay. Probably a 2.5 for me.
It was an ok album. best song: Factory
Not super engaging. I am not a huge fan in general, but I like some of his other music much better. I do think his band is talented.
I find Bruce very hit and miss. I love some of his stuff, but I find a lot of it good but not great. This album falls into the good but not great category.
I can see why people like him so much. Some great stuff but every song is too long like all 70s albums. Just wondering, is he American?
Americana , he’s got a wide range of talent and style, definitely a classic
Ned so fesch 🦅 RAHHH WTF IS A KILOMETER MURICA FUCK YEAH🦅 wie born in the usa, chli ruhiger und eig recht hübsch aber haut mi etz au ned um
wow nach 2 lieder positiv überrascht au en artist wo mismami nöd gern het er druckt d stimm schochli fest, aber v.a. adam raised a cain hani easy guet gfunde hahah mengisch ischs echli cheesy (promised land) aber ich han easy e gueti ziit omg hahahahahah streets of fire findi jz ganz heavy gsang de druckt meh als ich uf de schüssle bruuder he ja eig no überraschend cool aber am schluss hets sich doch zoge und das sött bimene 42 minütige album nöd umbedingt sii..
I hate Bruce with a passion but these songs weren't all bad and was even a lil badass at points
I'm not a big Bruce fan but it's good. Need to sit down and really listen to it.
Un album où Springsteen s’engage et s’investit à 100%. Je comprends pourquoi une population s’y identifie
Bruce Springsteen is one of the greatest performers I’ve ever seen live. But, I’ve always thought his actual music is wildly overrated. Badlands is a classic, but the rest is just generic Springsteen. This is a harsh take, but I’ve always felt like Bruce is just the NY/NJ equivalent of country music. That being said, it’s also not awful. Perfectly fine, just not up to the hype.
Never was a fan of Bruce's voice, or of his mainstream hits. I grew up in the late 70's/early 80's, so I was exposed to a lot of his music. This, however, surprised me a bit. I enjoyed the arrangements, the lyrics, and when Bruce sings the ballads, his voice isn't as painful to listen to; in fact I felt myself getting into it a bit, emotionally. Classic Americana Soft Rock. 3.
The album is fine but its a product of its time. Nothing stands out but its not a bad album.
råkk men ikke helt min stil
Not really a Springsteen fan but this album is easy to listen to.
Bruce is an amazing singer song writer, but his message is to real to gritty. its as if he enjoys wallowing in misery. rarely do any of his tracks lift me up. they only remind me of times better left forgotten. I read he was inspired by the author stienbeck, this makes sense as stienbeck also is bleak and unrelenting. i know this mirrors life but i dont need constant reminders in my music and books. lyrics aside the musicality is great and probably the only redeeming quality.
3/5.
Personally not for me
Toch weer erachter gekomen dat ik geen enorme Bruce Springsteen fan ben, al maakt de beste man natuurlijk zeker geen slechte muziek.
I’m not a huge Bruce Springsteen fan but this sounded like a masterpiece compared to the other albums I reviewed today.
It’s fine. There’s nothing here I’d go out of my way to listen to again.
an okay introduction to bruce springsteen i think
Being someone who is largely unfamiliar with Springsteen's work, my biggest takeaway here is how much he served as an influence to a few artists I actually do listen to (ex: The Killers). A booming, sound fit for stadiums, a big voice, all that jazz. On its own merit though, I don't know. I'm sure people love it but maybe I lack the lifelong, American connection to Springsteen that'll let me fully enjoy this record. It's good but it's not blowing my mind. If it was more energetic I think I'd like it more, that seems to fit him better than the softer melancholy that's present for much of this record. Adam Raised a Cain and Streets of Fire were pretty cool, for example.
This feels like Springsteen-core but nothing feels as memorable as his other singles and classics. Might have to re-listen.
Peak Springsteen. Phenomenal collection of his hits as they were produced in one fail swoop.
I liked a few of the songs and won't argue that Bruce Springsteen has talent and writes good lyrics, but he's just okay for me.
I don’t think I realized how piano-forward a lot Bruce’s music is. This album didn’t really resonate with me with the exception of Adam Raised a Cain, which got stuck in my head all day.
The first track made me think of Meatloaf, which is interesting. I appreciate that he isn’t precious about every note being perfect. I’m not hugely drawn to Bruce’s music, but when I listen closely, it sinks in. He really puts his heart into it. 3.7
I like the rockers, but the slow ones are a little too sluggish for me - tend to sound the same after a while. Still, Springsteen is good at taking lyric heavy songs and making them palatable. Good ones on here, but maybe not my favorite album. 3.6
Not a bad album, but not great.
Can really see the hype but not at all my goat the way he is for so many others💀 Good stuff tho
It's Bruce, there really isn't much else to say. I liked this more than born in the USA, but it just doesn't really click with me. This seems like the kind of album people love because someone else told them how much they love it.
Not terrible, love the piano rock, but bruce's voice gets annoying as fuck to me after awhile.
Not what I would consider his best work.
Good composition, you can feel the emotion, but I said I like abstract lyrics, and he’s always telling literal stories.
Good music, not my style.
I mean what do you want? It's the boss. In all honesty, I really do appreciate the majority of Springsteen's work over the years, but as a whole, I'm not super hot on this album. I think it strikes a nostalgic chord for listeners who grew up with his music, but I didn't. I was a late bloomer, so a lot of the less-than-iconic tracks just don't strike that same chord with me. That said, there is a bit of greatness to be found here like on Promised Land or the title track. And this isn't a bad one to start with if you're looking to become more familiar with the catalog.
Springsteen illuminates the dashed dreams, dead-end jobs, and decayed towns at the shadowed heart of so many working-class lives, but ultimately his somber soliloquies can't quite light up this heart of mine.
Good music. Lots of great tracks here.
Ja was wel lekker maar was ook wel minder dan die vorige 2 albums van hem
Fine.
A bit so-so to be honest. This album may be a little more sophisticated that previous ones but lacks the power. Born To Run is full of great anthems and is just fun. I found this album to be just background music, fine during dinner or at a club while you're busy doing something else but I wouldn't listen to it for itself
A very working man’s album. I do like some Springsteen songs but not a lot of these really hit with me. 3/5
Gear: Fostex TH610 (Lawton) Mix: teils zweckmäßig (insb. "Badlands") - aber immer ehrlich. Bass schiebt bei "Adam Raised a Cain" ordentlich. Piano/Orgel in "Racing in the Street" und "The Promised Land" wahnsinnig hochwertig. Musik: Beim ersten Hören (und quasi Erstkontakt mit einem ganzen Springsteen-Album) positiv überrascht! 😎 Wertung: 3-4/5
I’m not a big Springsteen fan but if I you are you probably would like this album.
Darkness on the Edge of Town is another album i have done through this project that is unremarkable but solid. Bruce's singing, and the music were all pretty good and had some fairly interesting moments but i feel it didn't have enough of them to really warrant being a great album for me. It's an alright album but nothing too amazing. Best Song: Streets of Fire Worst Song: The Promised Land
Nooh, mää en taas mikään Brucen ykkösfani oo. Tän tyylin rock ei mulle niin maistu.
Mumble singing with a strained voice sounds like he’s trying to record this while anticipating having to throw up. Good lyrics, his storytelling is great, the band is rock blues with some guitar, sax, or harmonica shredding so it’s got a good format, his singing is just awful. Sorry Boss.
Pas sûre d'avoir aimé. Eu envie de changer/couper la musique à plusieurs reprises.
mmm not my best listen especially the voice but i love the percussions and instruments
Okay!! First time listening to The Boss. Sounds like dad stuff. But it was fun.
I have never been a fan but I recognized some of the songs.
I can see how others appreciate this album, just not my cup of tea overall. Candy's Room was good, some of the others didn't feel like they were well thought out. Sounded a lot like a garage band just kinda messing around on a whim. 5/10
Some good lyrics and music. Don't really like his style.
Classic. As a big Dylan fan I wasn’t really into Bruce. Not sure why. Totally respect his run. Not a huge fan tho.
Adam raised a Cain is a banger the rest is okay to fine
I found I liked the album but then I don't remember much about it afterwards, not much in the way of hooks. It's generally a kind of desolate americana which maybe you need to be closer to to truly understand, but I think it's still a decent album.
Racing in the Street is going straight in my basket
Previously rated: Born to Run (4/5) *********************** Did Bruce's grandma take the cover photo when he came to visit for Thanksgiving? Anyway, the music itself is alright, if not a bit formulaic and mellow for my taste. Not as good as Born to Run.
These type of albums are tough. Badlands is one of my favorite Springsteen songs and I really enjoy Prove It All Night. But other than that there’s not much I like on this album. But I REALLY like Badlands. Ultimately I think I have to give the album as a whole a 3.
Probably should have given this more attention.
Didn't grab me like Born in the USA did, but I will probably try to listen to it again
Good album. I actually preferred The Rising. Album 2 of 3 straight The Boss albums.
Snooze fest
Chill driving music. Not really my vibe - quite old timey.
I never liked Springsteen. Never really disliked him; he's just not exactly my style. This album has not changed that opinion.
Y'know, I don't dislike this album, or even Springsteen (I think I like BORN TO RUN more, actually), but, gawd, he really does sound like he's singing in some kind of made-up gibberish language sometimes.
This is just music for guys and also dudes.
Not my favourite Springsteen album, all a bit slow and plodding. Still plenty of the Boss' swagger and emotion, but I'd rather listen to other BS albums.
Best: Something in the night
I'll admit that I've never really "gotten" Bruce, I've enjoyed a few live recordings but haven't really found anything life changing in the studio records. I think the production sounds a bit thin by modern standards. The songwriting might really resonate with some people, it doesn't do much for me.
it's alright. I'm not a huge fan of the full band Springsteen.
I don't really like Bruce
today I was in the proper mood to listen to a cheesy rock-pop album where a bloke cries in my ear while barely articulating sounds. musically it's pretty good
Average. Taylor Swift of old generation and same as her it’s just and ordinary and average. Might resonate with people since it’s so generic.
Heartland rock isn’t really my thing and this album didn’t convince me of anything I didn’t already know. Just some good songs and good performances.
He's kinda the James Dean of rock music, eh? I don't think it needs to be said but Springsteen is great. Had a fantastic run in the 70's and 80's, so you really can't go wrong with this one. My beef is that the list went a little overboard on Springsteen. You've already got Born to Run, Nebraska, and Born in the USA. Three great choices and it's all you really need as an intro pack to Springsteen. Darkness on the Edge of Town is still worth a listen, but I think the list could make room for other artists.
Slowly but surely Bruce is finally starting to win me over. Never got the hype no matter how many times I've tried. Something was different today. Bruce's vocal stylings have a unique energy that I never took notice of before. Give me some more time and I could see me growing to enjoy Bruce and this album a bit more.
Good album - more typical Bruce. I wish it had a little more weirdness on it but I can't complain overall.
I am of two minds on the album. I mean it's the Boss, so right away expectations are high. The thing is, though, I haven't ever been able to get my brain to latch onto his non-mainstream songs the way I have with the ones that have deep hooks in me. So, I love the vocals and the instrumentation, but it's tough to really want it because compared to some of those other tracks that are part of my core music mainframe, there aren't any like that.
I've got to stop and admit that I really just don't get Springsteen. Every album that I've heard from him is just forgettable. However, I will say that I was mesmerized at a Springsteen live show. The first hour I spent getting a beer and trying to find my seat. The rest of the show I was in awe. Not by the music, tho. It was more of a "how can this guy play for so long ...?" Four hours, it was a four hour show. He's 70+ years old, how can he do this...? I'm pretty sure I left early.
In anyone else's hands it would be too try-hard or cringy. But somehow Bruce Springsteen successfully embodies the earnest blue collar rocker by making it not just a schtick. He comes off as remarkably genuine, a rare thing in entertainment. Ultimately, however, "Darkness on the Edge of Town" doesn't surpass "Born to Run." It lacks the urgency and catchiness of its predecessor's title track, but is a solid collection of songs. Holding out hope that "Born in the USA" or "The Rising" is the Springsteen album that finally connects.
I'm really only familiar with Bruce's big hits, so I was kinda surprised by the vibe of this album--softer than I was expecting. Who knew early Bruce Springsteen had so much piano? (Fans of Bruce Springsteen, probably.) This reminded me in some ways of the Warren Zevon self-titled album, although I liked Zevon more. 3.5.
I am not overly familiar with Bruce Springsteen, but what I have heard enjoyed more that I did this.
Solider Rock, easy and good
Klassik, but acutally I did not care. Zoned out more or less instantly
Classic Bruce - I really like the piano and saxophone. Fairly repetitive but fun to listen to and get in a groove.
Another Bruce Springsteen album, wasn’t a fan of the one before so will see what I think. So far, better than the last (the USA one). Maybe a 3/5?
Not my favorite album by the boss. I do recognize I might be in the minority on that opinion.
Known Before: No Standouts: 2. Adam Raised a Cain 6.5
Bueno Pero ni es tan de mi estilo
Decent.
I don't like Bruce Springsteen and don't really understand the hype. I appreciate the album though. 3/5
i liked it, just not my favorite
Power ballad elvis vibes
Nice listen, nothing crazy though
Listened 2x but didn't really grab me. Decent though 3.1/5
Never really listened to Bruce Springsteen, I wonder why - I pretty much like his music. “Adam Raised A Caine” had good rhythm and I can really imagine how star struck couples romantically danced to “Something In The Night” back when.
3.5
good listen
Not super familiar with the works, it was okay.
First song was ok, classic dad rock stuff, but then all the songs felt like they were the exact same. None of them were particularly bad, but it got boring and repetitive after a while. 3/5
This sounds like the Bruce Springsteen you would expect, except for the most well known songs. It is amusing and pleasant to listen to, but as I am not a huge Springsteen fan, it doesnt get better than amusing and pleasant.
Classic boss. Okay songs
Meh
Verdict: 3 stars
its odd hearing albums you heard for ever growing yup and thought they were IT - with ears 40+ years older. Some hits became/are American Rock classics.. but overall, I have to drop it down a peg. 3/5. Boss is still The Boss
Haven’t really listened to Bruce Springsteen and I don’t think I will. Pretty sure he sold his entire music catalogue though for a bunch of money so really he’s never gonna know/care lol
3/5 - All songs are likeable if not a bit similar. Racing in the Street was my highlight
It's good, but I just can't get into his mumbly voice.
This album actually made a believer out of me. I’m not super high on this style of singing but eventually it won me over. Enjoyed Adam Raised a Cain, Something in the Night. Makes me feel like I’m in a high school movie in the 70s and I’m about to go to college and break up with my girlfriend and I’m smoking weed after the dance on Something in the Night. I’m listening to this shit right now WELL NOTHING IS FORGOTTEN OR FORGIVENNN
This guy sounds old but looks young. Don’t really like his voice. I think if he had a different voice I would like it more. Arrangement and instrumentation is all great. I liked something in the night and prove it all night the most
Didn’t listen
Never really gave ol Bruce a listen before but it wasn’t bad. It’s overly simply music for me (he rhymes home with tone) and other single word and predictable rhymes makes it feel like he’s singing the lyrics of a children’s book….but I could see why someone says “they used to make music you could sing to in my day”
This was ok. I liked Born in the USA more, but still pretty enjoyable. 3/5
It was okay. Not my favorite type of music
herkkä mies HERKKÄ sanon minä....kauniita lauluja se on selvä. working-class mumbles... työllisväen muminoita, MITÄ PAREMPAA VOI OLLA? ei paljoon mikään...tehdaskello soi... prrr.. sisu tehdas.. prrr täydelliset, palkat sekä työolosuhteet EI OLE VALITTAMISEEN VARAA,,, KOSKA ON KÖYHÄ... aikaa sellasiin...töihinn siitä the promised land
Not the best Springsteen album I've heard. Overall, good, not great. 3/5
Pretty, pretty, pretty good
Maybe I don't hate Bruce Springsteen music as much as I thought I did.
Quality songwriting from an authentic US voice. Yet somehow less rewarding than it should be.
Great musicianship, performed with great conviction, but I found this album a bit dull
didn't finish.
Decent enough but never a massive fan of The Boss
I've tried this record a number of times. It's a classic for sure. Just not one for me.
topically heavy.
OK.
One of the most boring voices mixed with good instrumentals.
So far every 49th album is Bruce Spingsteen. If this keeps up we'll get 20 Spingsteen albums on this list - which could be funny if it wasn't for the fact that he's already released even more than that
This album is the definition of American rock. A bit more stripped down then previous releases this album definitely has a more raw edge.
More fine-ness
Thoughtful. Made me feel like I had to listen to each word and sentence with thought
I'm sure it's good it's just not for me
Bra rock. Favorit: Streets of fire
What a boring listen. Not a Springsteen fan, but this sounds like a dull Bob Seger album (not a fan of his, either). Not offensive to the ears, just not inspiring, amazing, or original in any way.
I've never understood why Springsteen is so revered by people. After listening to this album, I still don't.
pas vraiment remarquable
Decent album, just over the Boss.
Bruce - Darkness on the Edge of Town Over het algemeen prima album, soms een beetje veel van hetzelfde, daarom drie sterren. 1. Lekkere piano, beetje jungletown vibes. Ook wel iets van no surrender. 7,3 2. Lekker uptempo 7 3. Mooi met die piano erdoor 6,8 4. Vind die temp wisselingen nice 7,2 5. Lekker maar beetje saai, einde wel weer heel mooi 7,3 6. Harmonica koning Bruce 7,2 7. Kort en een beetje saai 6,8 8. Ook wel oké, 6,8 9. Simpel liedje, maar wel lekker catchy 6,9 10. Mooie lyrics wel 7,1
Bruce blijft altijd een legend. Vet album, kende niet veel. Zijn stijl blijft altijd legendarisch
Man. Bruce Springsteen is yet another dude that people just love, while I am sitting here feeling left out. I dont hear it. I dont get it. It's just okay.
Pretty good better than others.
Bit plain and boring, but doesn’t hurt to blend in background.
Bored me a little bit, but still ok.
Einde van het album is zeker beter dan het begin. Begin is matig, rommelig en hij lijkt af en toe te veel andere artiesten na te willen doen.
As always with Springsteen and the E-street band there is a solid core of singer-song rock n roll. Several more anonymous tracks here. So, quite good, but not amongst the best
I just don't really like Bruce Springsteen's voice or songwriting all that much. Many of the songs sound very similar to me. I'm especially not a fan of the upper harmony over dubbing that he uses on almost all of his choruses. All that said, I don't know that I would ever be upset to hear his music, it's just that I don't particularly like it. All in all, I would listen to it again.
Interesting, capturing working life. kinda depressing.
This isn't my favorite Springsteen album. I feel like the record starts with a zig and a zag: Badlands is a little too happy with its piano romp and sax solo. While the throaty yowl of Adam Raised a Cain plants its pathos more firmly in the Darkness one might find on the Edge of Town. The record takes awhile to find itself and once it does it *can* be satisfying. Still, it's no Nebraska.
Much better than expected! I really enjoyed this listen and will definitely be listening again 7/10
good album. can never go wrong with a bruce springsteen record.
3.5
I want to listen to this more I think - I liked the start and end but it blurred together in the middle. But some of these tracks really evoke a whole world.
Decent 3, the classic Bruce songwriting is in there and I like it
Bruce ain’t for me
There are better Springsteen albums
More gritty and stripped down album of underdogs. I actually kinda liked most of the songs.
I understand the reason why Springsteen attracts such devotion, I just can't get into it myself. Yes he has some great songs but broadly the music to me all kind of mushes into one on albums like this. I get it, I just don't get it.
Badlands- 3.6/5 Adam Raised a Cain- 3.8/5 Something in the Night- 2.8/5 Candy's Room- 4.2/5 Racing in the Street- 3.6/5 The Promised Land- 2/5 Factory- 2.5/5 Streets of Fire- 3.3/5 Prove It All Night-3/5 Darkness on the Edge of Town- 3.5/5 Total- 3.2/5
Not bad not uuh
Some moments but Bruce’s wobbly howling doesn’t grab me like it should
I've felt for a long time that I didn't have enough Bruce in my life, but I never got motivated to seek it out. I was kinda excited when this came up on the generator. Just the motivation I needed. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this as much as I'd hoped. All very overdramatic. I know there's a version of Bruce for me out there. This wasn't it.
Starts out strong and fades
Loved him and saw live often. Think I just got tired of him. Fun but not really great.
Glimpses of future greatness infuse this first album.
Good, but I thought I'd enjoy it more than I did
It's quite alright. Not something I'd listen to in my spare time, but it's nice.
Too slow. Too Bruce Springsteen.
Eh it was okay I guess. Bruce isn't my thing.
this bruce was better than the last brice i listened to. give me some darkness on the edge of town. i bet he was a hard working man before his fame, cause if not he loves cosplay. almost got that squealy yelp i like n this album. good americana rock in the suburbs. good job brucey boy.
This was okay, but nothing really grabbed my attention here.
For a Bruce Springsteen album, this was way too downbeat for me. I like the explosive big sound of the E Street Band backing him. The first track started the album off great, with high energy. Sadly the rest of the album just fell flat for me.
I understand this appeals to some- smalltown aspirations and dreams, Americana and 70's stadium rock but it sounds samey to me. It's not that I dislike it only that it does nothing for me. Having said that he deserves his niche. He's very good at what he does.
This was just fine. Maybe I don’t have as much appreciation for this genre or my mood wasn’t as into it because I know Springsteen is such an influential artist.
Enjoyable, but some of the songs were a little too "middle America" for me. I think I preferred the more upbeat songs, especially with the sax. Least favorite was "Adam Raised a Cain"
its OK and very distinctly Bruce
There's not a lot of fun happening here. The album title explains it all. Bruce is best when he's being Bruce - pumping the air and living the American Dream. He's down on his luck on Darkness. Badlands and Promised Land stand out. But elsewhere and it's tough going.
America
Not his best album, but a good one.
A couple of great tracks but for me the rest is struggling to meet Bruce’s high standards - better before and better to come.
love some of the songs here, standouts with the title track and prove it all night.
Some good stuff on this. Never been a big fan of Springsteen so this is my first time listening to one of his full albums. Still not a big fan but didnt hate this one.
First time listening to the boss. Good solos and very listenable.
boring springsteen
Some seriously good tracks on here. I found most of it quite self-indulgent, it worked for me on some tracks like 'Something in the Night', but 'Street of fire' i found super grating. Enjoyed the listen tho
Composition is nice but lyrics are not my cup of tea
3.5/5
First time listening to a full Bruce record. I know he was a great performer and songwriter but didn’t realize what a great singer he is. I like his dynamic vocal performances on Streets of Fire and Something in the Night. Not a big fan of the songs about old cars… 3.5
Good rock n roll. Badlands is a good song. This isn’t my favorite Bruce record but it’s still good. Clarence Clemons is great even if he does only have one lick 😂
A hard listen
medio zzz 6.5/10
Maybe I just don’t like Bruce Springsteen. To this album’s credit, its production isn’t as unbearable as “Born in the USA”, but it still suffers from quite a few pitfalls that plague the aforementioned album. To be honest, I feel like Springsteen is at his best without the E Street Band. If “Nebraska” has taught us anything, it’s that Springsteen’s social commentary regains its razor-sharp edge through just Folk instrumentation, and it becomes greatly dulled with the addition of other superfluous instruments (As a progressive rock fanatic I love me some electronic keyboard instruments, but they do NOT fit here). With these complaints aside, this album is definitely better than “Born in the USA”, at least music-wise. Worth the listen, but unless you can look past the embellishments, not worth coming back to. Standout Songs: “Badlands” “Candy’s Room” “Racing in the Street”
Catchy hooks and an overall solid rock album.
Bruce Springsteen the champion of New York, New Jersy, and the Jews. This album is ok. Not very good, not very bad. Yet another 3/5 for the books. A low 3/5
I’m sure the actual musical compositions were good but unfortunately I couldn’t tell because Bruce-y’s awful droning voice ruined it all. The only song I actively thought “this is ok” was Racing in the Street. Factory was eh too I guess. ‘Something in the Night’ just sounded like someone writhing in pain, and I’m pretty sure ‘The Promised Land’ was made up on the spot because it was just a series of loosely correlated noises.
Goed, maar wordt er niet warm van. Vind de stem eigenlijk matig
The Boss is aight. I like Born USA more. And just that one song.
How much you like this album really depends on how much you like epic romanticizing of blue collar life in 1970s America. Me not so much. I don't hate it, exactly, but sometimes Bruce sounds like a parody of himself. Also, I often feel like he's pandering to his audience the way modern country artists do. But he does what he does well, and his band is tight. Badlands is cool. And though I don't love Candy's Room, I do admire the bizarre arrangement. Mostly this listen just brought me back to riding on the school bus, listening to WMMR's The Morning Zoo, and wondering when these songs would end so we could get to music I preferred. Also, I wonder if I'm the only guy who grew up in Freehold in the '70s who doesn't love The Boss?
Oh, I tried. I tried I tried I tried. It's fine. I don't hate it. But there's not much for me here.
Good album, bit screamy
It's a great album dealing with what it was like to be an American working class man living in the 70s. The music is typical rock and roll with a bit of 70s corniness that still seems to add into the whole vibe of the album (I mean the sax solo, guitar solo and then back again to sax? that's just crazy and yet somehow it works here). Some of the lyrics are great and relatable - Adam Raised a Cain is a great thing to listen to all the men today trying to be better dads then their own. And some of the lyrics are just too specific for the time and space when the album was made - all the talking about cars means nothing to me but please note that I'm not American and I was born much later. Overall, good, nice vibes but nothing outstanding to me.
Not a style I ever normally gravitate to, so it took me a little while to settle in, but I liked it more as it went on. Ballads were my faves. Wailing guitar solos and nasal sax grate for me a lil.
Not my thing but definitely not bad. At first his singing kind of reminded me of Elvis, which isn't a bad thing, I just thought it was funny. Great guitar, too. Fave track(s):Adam Raised a Cain
Bruce Springsteen doesn't do a lot for me but some of the songs on here are more compelling than others.
Great songs in the first half, second half meanders a bit.
Bruce doesn't really do it for me, but I can see how someone could like some of these songs. The album itself feels kinda disjointed
Not vintage Springsteen for me.
A spiky listen and not always in a good way, Springsteen stretched and ended up with something intriguing. The second half of Darkness gets more consistent but also much more boring. You can't take Bruce's ability to create real moments of beauty, but there are also baffling stretches in many songs. An album I will likely revisit with some cringing, not one to convert haters.
Hankala antaa Springsteenille kolmosta, ikäänkuin olisi tekemänsä musiikin itseisarvo. Brucella on todella hieno tunne, jota on hankala kenenkään jäljentää.. ANTANA marginalisoidulle amerikkalaiselle leivän.. ja miekan.. Hyvä.. heh.. Ameriikkassa aina tapahtuu hauska seurata haha..
Genres: Rock Formed: It’s OK. Nothing outstanding for me.
I’m really not familiar with Springsteen. His style has always been very unique, but just not interesting enough for me. This was OK.
Very basic album I'd say, has a few better songs
Bruce doesn't exactly speak to me but the narrative arcs and spirit of rock live strong in his music
Not my favorite Boss album but good
I like a couple songs a lot and equally disliked others. He’s still the boss.
Good album, but I’ve never understood the intense praise Springsteen gets
decent melodic sensibilities; but there's an underlying appeal by Springsteen trying to appear genuine by trying to scream his heart out - that's the whole genre of heartland rock, to be fair this was decent by heartland rock standards, but any rock album does need more than lyrics for me for it to be better than average - here, that was sadly not the case, with the songs merging into each other.
This album didn’t really do anything for me, even on a second listen. That was a surprise considering how much I liked some of his others. The songs were just kind of boring to me. I liked “Candy’s Room” and the title track but that was about it. Sorry Bruce, but this one is a 3.
Have always listened to random tracks from this album. Nice in its entirety
Avg bruce
i think if bruce never sang in his raspy voice i would like his music much more
All of this guys albums deserve to be on the list. However, this is not my favorite album of his. It’s good, but pales in comparison to a few of his others.
Less R&B than Born To Run and much more "typical" Bruce. Some proper rock songs and lots of piano-led ernest story songs. Ok, but I prefer the two "Born" albums.
My second favourite Springsteen album so far. A consistent hard rock sound without too many cheesy elements. Somehow this seems to have more genuine emotion in it was than Born to Run or Nebraska. It seems Bruce is best when he's not going for radio hits. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Badlands Date listened: 23/12/22
Fun arena rock lite typical of Bruce. Guitar tones are a bit abrasive and high in the mix for the genre. Nice mix of intensity levels on the tunes. Nothing was tough to listen to, the entire album had a nice listenable and nostalgic vibe.
Aardig
A dark and raw side to The Boss, with some great songs like Badlands and Racing in the Street, but a bit of filler and some very hit and miss vocals
It was an easy album to listen too, good background music while I worked.
The Boss! This is like a good version of modern country. New Jersey country! But still not quite my cup of tea... or, ah, can of domestic lager? I know factory life is hard Bruce, but I feel like I had to be there.
I'm not sure if I got into it as it went or if the back half was better but that I definitely enjoyed it a lot more by the end. More sax less shouting.
good, if you like BS
Not a big Springsteen fan but OK.
Never really got Springsteen but have to say this speaks directly in a working class voice and is very enjoyable 3.3
It's "good", but a bit flat for me in terms of Springsteen.
I've already forgot it, nothing special
ok. Classic. but not for me
this album took longer for me to get into than born in the u.s.a, which surprised me when i was coming into this album with excitement. i grew to understand how it's considered some of bruce's finest work: the working class focus, the deep lyrics, the guitar riffs. there are some bluesy aspects here, but it's mostly classic the boss' rock and roll. that being said, while i did come to enjoy and respect darkness on the edge of town, there was something lacking and i couldn't come to love it.
So, my first thought upon finishing this album was "I really didn't like this as much as Born in the USA", and while it's unfair to compare the albums when rating this specific one, I couldn't help that thought. If "Born in the USA" is an 'uplifting' heartland rock album (which many people find it to be), this one is a little bit darker and more downcast. Bruce's voice is particularly unappealing on this album. That said, I would say this is fairly raw and gritty, so maybe I'm deriving some correlation there. This album was fine, but definitely not groundbreaking for me.
This was a pretty solid album. A lot of Bruce's songs sound very similar. I dont think any of them are bad though. None of these songs stood out to me in a special way except maybe racing in the street. I still thought this was an above average album, Bruce knows how to make a good song. 6/10
ok boss ok. Its that sort of stadium crooner sound of the 80's, talking about how your car is great and your girl is great and how your town is going to shit. Bruce's songs to me are important as historical artifacts but to me his songs are overly saccarine and sentimental without a purpose. It's a story just to make you cry. Not to inspire, not to cast blame, not to offer hope for a future. These are songs meant for and from the present.
Not a fan of optimistic Americana but this record explores those who never quite realised their dreams. Feels very much influenced by Bob Dylan but retains signature stadium rock qualities. Songs are tight but fully realised. I guess coming off his legal troubles, the success of Born to Run was tainted with cynicism, leading to this album. Must have been very powerful to those living the American scream. "But if dreams came true, oh, wouldn't that be nice/But this ain't no dream we're living through tonight". Could very well have leaned even further into the darkness but that's not really on brand. Pleasantly surprised! Fav song: Adam raised a Cain
ma non male, ma un po' americano e un po troppo sempre ugule. Un pochettino Country non e proprio il mio genere. Un po ululato. sono gentile e gli metto 3 stelle perchè avrà fatto la storia della musica
Couple of good songs - but generally unexciting
3.5 stars. springsteen is starting to grow on me.
Aburrido
Again, not something I would choose to listen to often. But I like that it’s real. Not as commercial as he had been. Awesome band!
Some honest, hard workin', car drivin', go-nowhere-with-your-girl music.
Solid songwriting, solid playing, solid album. But for all I might try to listen with fresh ears, prompted by fans, critics and even a recent movie I saw about a Pakistani English kid who finds himself through Bruce (and this album in particular) there’s very little that really grabs me. Still not a convert to The Boss, at least not to this album.
Campy bruce
Yeah, I see where Sam Fender gets it from. No, I don't enjoy it as much.
E Street Band = great! Bruce singing = bad
There’s some Springsteen songs that I love, but not from this album. I think hearing many songs in a row made me realize how much it sounds like he’s in physical pain when he’s singing.
Not quite Springsteen at his best, but still lots of good stuff
My dad really likes Bruce Springsteen and has always wanted me to listen to him, but... I'm not super impressed. There were some okay songs but nothing stood out.
Cool
Thought I would like it more. A bit slower, a bit heavier sounds than expected
Not his best work, but a prelude to bigger things
I always forget about The Boss, but I probably shouldn't. The music most of the time entertains me, and this was no exception.
For Springsteen this was decent.
Not a big Bruce fan but this album was decent
3/10, 30%
I can see it now but I’m just not the right demographic for this. If I lived a few hundred miles to the west I’m sure I’d be thumping my chest and saluting my flag but it just doesn’t quite hit me in the heartland.
I don't know what it is about Springsteen. His heart is in the right place and the lyrics are very good. I just find the music overblown/overwrought. Not for me.
Preposterous voice. The dude is obsessed with Streets, isn't he? Sounds like a spiked nipple piercing a tank top as a cool breeze rolls in on a summer evening.
Just as I manage to work my lifelong (and completely irrational) dislike of The Boss out of my system, a new round of hagiography hits me in the face like a dead fish. (The new biopic is slinking out of cinemas as I type.) Anyway. Credit where credit is due. Springsteen, songwriter, is a consummate storyteller. It's only in the lack of similar in the current age that this awareness has full come to me. On the other hand. Storytellers, across the ages, have often been mythologisers too. Caveat Emptor etc...
Like Michael Scott, I know way less Bruce Springsteen than I thought.
Good for Springsteen, probably one of his best but still feels pretty one dimensional.
Ну-с, очаровательно, но очень по 70тски, не совсем моё, но даёт ощущение будущего, что замечательно))) 1. очень мило и весело 2. чувак пытался сотворить рок, но что-то пошло не так 3.its giving me freedom vibes 4. up up up 5. погрустить? 6. ооой, irish_ типикал позитивненкие песни 70-х, труба в конце -- огонь(или это волынка? да простит меня Эвтерпа) 7.типично "печальные" 80-е 8. Орган? на фоне оч крут 9. sweet, i hope its prooved 10. slow and classy особенные песни: 5,8
хороший достаточно обычный рок, но у брюса спрингстина есть песни куда лучше, 3,7/5
приятный саундтрек к старенькому американскому роуд-муви многие треки понравились, буду переслушивать, но альбом в целом в сердце не ударил..
Typically haven't been much of a Springsteen fan from what I've heard over the years. 3/5. Favourite tracks were Adam Raised a Cain and Streets of Fire. I find Springsteen mumbles quite a lot through some of the songs through the album and it's hard to intentionally listen to.
Pretty good
3.2 - What is it that I dislike about Bruce Springsteen? Is it the pandering to blue collar America? Is it the emotional grandstanding that oozes with sincerity? Is it the hit-you-over-the-head music production? Is it the stylized leather jacket/tight jeans combo? I couldn't get into "Born in the U.S.A" and I can't get into this record either. I tried. I even kinda sorta like some of the songs. But - I don't know - it still all seems phony, like an elaborate put-on.
Fav Song: Badlands
Like the ones before it. Perfectly fine.
first listen not quite my tempo
It's my least favourite Springsteen album yet. Feels like a less vital Born to Run. Still good(ish) but failed to hold me for all that long.
While the classic Springsteen themes are definitely there, I would argue that as far as his portfolio is concerned, this does not stand out as a particularly special album.
Super fun album!! I have always listened to Born to Run and had some of the bangers on playlists but I've never listened to this album at all. This is less packed with famous bangers but it's also really fun, I feel like it's got real 80s vibes for a late 70s album so maybe it was really ahead of its time. Some of the tracks felt like boring dad rock to me a little bit. Love the song Factory and Badlands both for interesting stories they tell and also for sound.
There are a couple of Springsteen hits that I like, but this album didn't contain any of them and seemed very lukewarm at best. Too much mumbling and the sax solos are nice by themselves, but get old quick. Definitely not bad, but not quite good enough either.
I've never been a huge fan of Springsteen and if you had told me this was his best album I probably wouldn't listen to any others but I know that isn't true. There wasn't anything that stood out to me here besides this just being classic mo town rock which is cool but I like a little quicker tempo.
I’ve never gotten into Springsteen. Still haven’t, yet, but I think you probably have to pay attention to the stories in the lyrics to really appreciate what half the USA loves about it. Gonna be tough to do that with the next album coming at me every day, but at least this made me believe in that proposition. Another one to return to at a leisurely pace. {Prior rated}
Oh no, I’m not so sure I think Bruce Springsteen can sing. 😬
I've never really been a big fan of The Boss, and this isn't the album to change my mind. I don't hate it, it's just not my cup of tea...I will say, tho... I really like the chord progression of Candy's Room, even if it's ok song otherwise. The rest of the album is pretty on-brand for Springsteen, whether or not that that's your thing.
Not great, Not terrible. 3.
Calling the UN because having 3 (or more!?!) Bruce Springsteen albums on this list is a crime against humanity that needs to ne investigated. This is the best BS album yet, as there is some variation in terms of tempo, style, and emotion. It's almost like these are real songs. Regardless, it's all just so safe and boring. No generation that actually had a hard time of it could produce music so dull.
More Springsteen, its good but I've had better
Ei oma lemppari Springsteenin tuotannossa. 3/5
Meh 3
Not bad not bad, but also not that good 5/10
Prima album maar klinkt super verouderd
An okay album not the best by Springsteen but average
curti :) é bem melodico, me lembra musica de filmes dos anos 90/00 de sessão da tarde (no bom sentido rsrs) acho que porque "I'am On fire" é dele tambem, só não do mesmo album.
From a position of basically zero prior experience with Springsteen: His two modes on this are either Moaning or Growling. The majority of it is moaning, and I much, much, much prefer the parts where he’s growling.
"Darkness on the Edge of Town" brought to you by '70s Springsteen. Country-ish hard rock springkled with flashy riffs and sax solos. And what's the difference between '70s Springsteen and '80s Springsteen? Or in particular this album and "Born in the USA"? I don't know, tbh. The sounds are pretty similar. Yet for some reason, I enjoyed "Born in the USA" more. Of course it's too early to judge Springsteen's music as a whole. But I think his music is the best in small doses. I received his USA album not so long ago, and that's probably why i find this album a bit tiresome.
