Reviews (page 10 of 13)
Excellent 80's pop. Would happily listen again.
Helt ok popmusik
Cyndi Lauper has always struck me, as a child growing up in the 90's and early aughts watching VH1 for hours a day, as very annoying. I was aware of 'Time After Time' and 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun', and the former is extremely cheesy (though OK) while the latter is brutal. But this pre-conceived bias towards her is why this exercise of listening to all these albums is good -- I was confronted full-on with having to address whether this bias was something based in reality or based in making a black/white decision one time while I was watching tv on a Saturday afternoon when I was 11 years old. I am happy to report that my findings were inconclusive. This album had a lot of really fun, really interesting pop instrumentation, but also a great deal of annoying Cyndi-Lauper-ness going on. For the full experience, throw on 'Yeah Yeah' in which you have this wonderful horn hook overlayed on top of her being, like, demonstrably *way too much*. I don't think Cyndi Lauper is for me, but I hope that my foray into this album at least shed some of the unfair assumptions I had and instead replaced them with barely fair assumptions that I know will hold forever, again, without thinking much about them.
Kitshy 80s pop - was ok, but unmemorable
Ok
Time after Time perhaps one of the greatest songs ever. Girls Just Want to Have Fun undeniable bop despite how overplayed / overused it has become. As far as debut albums go it’s lightning in a bottle stuff. Overused synth keys, someone had a new toy in the studio and rinsed it. Enjoyable but won’t really return to anything bar the hits.
I find Cyndi impossible to dislike. But it shows how far the bar of unusual has moved.
There's some bangers on here and some total crap. I can see how it's probably influenced a lot of artists though and has obviously tried to push boundaries.
nice 80's vibe, classic hits, some songs longer than needed. unique vocals. interesting interlude before last song. 3/4
Enjoyed this. Very eighties pop. The album was pretty good, with a few hits and, arguably, one pop classic - Time after Time. 3.5/5
It's just nonstop hits one right after the other for the first half, then it fizzles a little bit.
This is not bad. Some great songs
A fun 80s pop record
Good, fun, and weird album.
Very nice instrumentals, very 80s was not crazy about cindys voice on most of the tracks but it works in the context. Rly liked the synths
Iconic, but not for me.
I get it, but it’s not for me
I thought this was decent had some iconic songs
whats so unusual is the high ratings this album is receiving. there are a couple of cool synth parts and a few good bass lines but otherwise unremarkable.
Fun 80’s bop
Some bangers, enjoyed Girls just want to have fun, time after time, Witness, I'll Kiss you, overall not 100% my kinda music
6/10 This is very stupid, and probably deliberately so, but it's just too catchy to hate it.
Pop classic, como le hizo para salirse con la suya con tanto grito
Thought I only knew one song on here, but I knew three! Who knew Cyndi Lauper had more than one hit? And Time After Time is a cool song, I just didn’t know it was her. I didn’t mind this album. I probably won’t listen to it in full again, but I will listen to some songs from now on a while so it’s a three for me.
Lauper is amazingly talented!
Better than I remember.
Strong start, it peters out at the tail end.
It’s a fun pop album. Cyndi has a unique voice, quirky, the arrangements are good. A lot of it still stands up 40 years later, obviously “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and “Time After Time” but others too. And it has a bouncy song about wanking…
First 6 tracks are good, the last 4 not so much. So 6/10. Favs: Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Time After Time
80s synth pop. Pretty much what you'd expect, although not as insanely bubble gum as Girls Just Wanna would lead you to believe.
Absolute banger of an A-side with some of the greatest songs of the decade, very disappointing B-side with a lot of generic 80s pop that feels disjointed. Best: Money Changes Everything, Time After Time, She Bop; Worst: Witness, I'll Kiss You, 3.2/5
Some early 80s gems on here.
Cyndi Lauper sure made some good earworms back in the day. Love it or hate it, those singles are infectious. And the whole album is also surprising. It feels like the moment when New Wave finally abandoned its post punk roots and took off as 80s pop music. It's a lot better than I expected. On a side note, being a Weird Al fan as a kid introduced me to a lot of music but some songs just never recover his parodies. Cyndi Lauper is a strong example for me and it's hard to take it seriously now. Sorry Cyndi.
80s pop is not my thing, but I have always had a soft spot for Cyndi Lauper. Funky personality, great unique voice and some of her songs are really good (Time After Time). It's not all genius though, and I don't think, overall, that it's more than a 3 for me in terms of musicality, But a very good 3!
Time After Time is a great song. Rest ok too 3/5
iri stimm gfallt mer eig nöd so, aber s sind scho mega bangers debi i dem album!
Ok
Nicely synthy with a few really solid songs. Middling 3.
6/10 I thought it was going to be a 10 after the first few songs but her voice gets very grating after a while and the style of song changed Favourite Song=Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Least Favourite Song=Ill Kiss You
Quintessential 80s sound, sounds to mainstream for me
Cyborg Lauper 🌟 🌟 🌟 Despite the excitement of finally having a female artist on this list, my initial reaction to seeing CL come up wasn’t that positive! She always felt like someone who had released a couple of timeless singles, but was more of a 80s fashion icon. I always found ‘Girls just…’ so annoying as a child, probably because I was a 6 year old boy. Re-listening it’s hard to argue with the quality of that song. ‘Time after time’ sounds even more majestic. The rest of the album? Highlights: THE HITS - I stand corrected! It’s much more synthy and new wavy than I expected. ‘All through the night’ - synth powerhouse banger Lowlights: ‘Witness’ - pop reggae 😣 ‘Time after time’ - adds nothing to an incredible song ‘He’s so unusual’ - too bloody quirky for my liking
Very enjoyable. A couple of classics on here. “Time After Time” is such a great song. The whole album has a very 80s MOR rock sound, that although dated I feel is kind of creeping back in fashion and I actually quite like. The second half flags a bit but an enjoyable listen.
This was pretty enjoyable. A little synthy for my every day tastes, but she makes a fine group of singles.
Bit torn with this one. Slight rebellious 80s MTV album. Not a fan of her voice or those synths or 80th reverb drums. But she's more interesting than Madge.
Blasting Time after time on my headphones, fully suited walking into my corporate job made me feel like Patrick Bateman! I really enjoyed it but then there are parts that annoyed me more. I’m not much of a new wave guy and I can’t get into it as much as I’d like. 3/5
3.5/5
The singles are so amazing but rest sounds rather generic which comes as no surprise.
Bom album anos 80. Além dos clássicos Girls Just Want to Have Fun e Time After Time, gostei de Money Changes Everything, I'll Kiss You e Yeah Yeah.
I really want to like cyndi but it’s something about that voice that I don’t like. Time after time is a banger because she’s not yelling in that one lol. But it’s obviously a very big milestone in fashion and sound. Didn’t know she had made a cover of Prince or vice verse.
Aside from the couple of classics on this, I just really don't connect with it much. Her voice is a bit grating to me so hearing it for this many songs in a row got old. The tech-y musical notes were fun and so very 80's though. 3.5
Fine
money changes everything- 4 girls just wanna have fun- 5 when you were mine- 4 time after time- 5 she bop- 5 or 6 all through the night- 5 witness- 4 ill kiss you- 4 hes so unusual- its not unusual. 4 yeah yeah- 5 it was fine. picture of me listening to this: 😐
Fun
Solid. Some great hits.
Favorite Track: All Through the Night
Big Cyndi :) gaun yersel’ decent listen :)
It's been enjoyable for sure
Pure New Wave. Stuff is great. I also like that she's not afraid to do cover songs on a record.
Niet denderend, ook niet slecht
keyboard sound is very distinctive of the time period. i knew several songs without ever having heard of cyndi lauper
Rating: 6/10 Some great songs, rest sounds pretty generic. Choice cuts: Money Changes Everything, Girls Just Want to Have Fun
Songs: Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Time After Time
Fun, but otherwise nothing too groundbreaking or special it felt like
Such an amazingly adorable 80s iconic personality, who could not help but to fall in love with her. 3 stars
This just felt kind of nostalgic for what my mom would have playing in the car during ling road trips.
Ok! So I was super cynical when I first saw this was my album of the day. I don't have much familiarity with Cyndi apart from the obvious songs. But I thought, Cyndi Lauper, of course she's on this list, she had two popular songs and they had 1001 album book to fill. There's no way this album has made the cut. Now, I'm not saying this blew me away but...it wasn't as bad as I was anticipating. Did I have to hear it before I died, no. But, it's true 80s synth pop rock, and it was pretty fun. Who knew that Harry Styles was clearly inspired by She Bob for his song Cinema! In all, not an awfully bad album, voice is irritating and I don't think I'd run to listen to it again in full but hey, it was ok!
Reminds me of music from pingu
Overly enjoyable but nothing on here was great and capable elevating the album to anything better than "just good." This was a 3.5/5 at its absolute best.
Being the first time I have ever heard this in its entirety, I found it pretty enjoyable. It's a solid 3.5 for me. The last 4 tracks were definitely leftover filler tracks judging by how good the front of the album was. Well produced and slick catchy songs even decades later.
***A fun, upbeat album
Girls just wanna have fun! What’s more to say lol
Not bad but not my cup of tea.
Fav: Girls Just Want To Have Fun Least Fav: Yeah Yeah This did not sound as I expected it to, it’s good and Cyndi’s voice is great but some of the songs feel lacking. Unsure how to feel about it rn so I’ll stick with a 3
Surprised at how many songs I knew from someone I didn't know the name of. Decent album but not doing it for me
Only ever heard Time After Time and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, never the rest of the album. Now I associate Time After Time with Parks and Rec. It is a very good ballad. He's so Unusual is out of left field, it sounds like it's from a musical from the 50s. Yeah Yeah sounds like a B52s song.
Des pépites mais sinon mouaif
Pleasantly surprised by this one. Was expecting the usual 80’s album dirge but actually there were a number of pretty good songs. Not particularly my scene but a lot better than other similar offerings from that time. Definitely a couple of songs I may even revisit again if in the mood for some decent 80’s tunes. Album tailed off a bit towards the end though. Close to a 3.5 album this one.
This was like a trip down memory lane for me. I recall driving around with my young daughter in her toddler seat, trying to sing along to she bop. I enjoyed this, mainly because of the memories that brought back. But it’s very typical of 80s music that I’m not particularly fond of. Even so, I’ll give it a three.
Why did I know almost every song on here? Very iconic. Her voice is interesting.
This was fun!!
ok'ish pop
I honestly wasn't looking forward to she's so unusual all that much. Cyndi Lauper's voice, whilst very distinct, can sometimes grate on me depending on what she's doing. However, the album is generally quite catchy, and I didn't even find her hit songs to be too annoying to hear for the umpteenth time in my life. Her voice still grated on me I some songs, especially the little cheer things she likes to do. Surprisingly enjoyed All Through the Night and When You Were Mine. Her music is obviously very 80s, but not generic sounding for the time.
Not my usual cup of tea. A lot of outdated synths that screams 1983. But it slaps in it's own way. Catchy melodies, good vibes, great vocals. Mix that stands the test of time. Pretty solid, might revisit again someday.
Objectively a great 80s pop record. Sadly I can only take so much of her voice. The hits have been played to death on the radio even still today, but that speaks to this album's influence in today's music.
Fun Pop
A couple of hits, I can't say I really like Cyndi Lauper that much beyond those.
Some absolute peak 80s bangers on here but her voice is a little much at points.
Listened to some of it. It was actually good. The band and the song lyrics were tight. I'm not a Cyndi Lauper fan, like her voice isn't my thing, but this was an ok album.
It’s Cyndi Lauper, and most of the songs you’ve already heard by her. There’s some interesting synth parts here in there in parts of songs, but nothing stood out too much aside from the hits. Maybe I should give it a second listen to focus more on the instruments, but Lauper’s voice is a little too much (sweet? aggressive?) for me after about 3 songs. Good for Lauper from rising from the ashes of music industry bullshit and coming out with this album. I’m sure it’s still making her some money.
Pretty middle of the road album for me. No standouts but not really any bad songs either. Overall pretty good. Favourite song: time after time
Is it blasphemy to say that I think this album is really overrated by most of the reviewers here? Sure, Cyndi Lauper was a far-reaching, flamboyant act that spoke to millions of music lovers (especially teens) in the 80s – but is her music really as good as her legacy suggests? Maybe not. Lauper's vocal, while powerful, quirky, and memorable, does not provide good material for an album's worth of music. After the first 20 minutes or so, her voice starts getting a bit abrasive – and of course you're only halfway through the album at that point. Combined with the overactive synths, electronic drumbeats, and backing vocalists, we have a product that's very much larger-than-life and a little exhausting to follow completely. But Lauper's music is a goshdarn fun time, I'll give it that. It's impossible to hate this woman. 3/5 Key tracks: Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Time After Time, All Through The Night
A couple huge hits but otherwise pretty underwhelming. Time after time is great, but the rest doesn’t come close to that
Not really my jam, but it's a pretty iconic 80's pop album (and artist). Time After Time is pretty great however.
ниче такой
Probably the most up and down album I've listen to so far. Some absolute top tier songs, alternating with songs of which I am surprised no one during the making of the album said they are shit. Not worth a relisten as an album, but some of the songs definitely will be listened to again
Solid pop album
Ok. Couple of hits, nothing special
minus the iconic songs, not really my style
I'm well familiar with this album, it was in the clubs and all over the pop radio stations in the 80s. This one had to sell a bajillion albums back then, it had quite a few songs that charted. I think "She Bop" is the one I liked the best.
It's a fun classic however sometimes the vocals get a little whinny. With the power in her vocals this is a shame.
Solid catchy 80s rock
Was ok
time after time is a classic.
3 stars
Habita temazos, pero si soy objetiva no me ha encantado.
eh I like Girl Just Want to Have Fun, and Time after Time is just there, the rest were meh, but even those are not stellar to me
Ok, but hard to listen to all at once. Her voice can grind a little. Still good for it’s place in the 80s though.
Some interesting tracks but it didnt blow me away.
Ah it’s just OK isn’t it. I really struggle with 80s pop, just the drum machines and synths just make everything sound so tinny and just lacking some depth. However, there’s no denying she had some decent songs in her and a good voice. Obvs will never listen again mind.
I guess this was okay? Wasn't THAT unusual though.
Hard to decide how good this album was without all the nostalgia associated with it for me. I have had this record in my collection since I was 4 years old. It’s a great listen and a great album but how much rotation do I give it? Not that much
I really only cared for “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”
It was fun at times.
Ilahduttavan kasari. 3.5⭐
She's so lacking tune
First half is eh. 2nd half is great. Ez 3.5
3.5 really. Pretty good stuff. Aged well
entrega o que promete, bem divertido pra passar o tempo
it contains a couple of famous hits but the rest of the tracks almost pass by unnoticed when playing the whole album
"Time after time" one of my favourite songs. "Girls ..." I listened already too way too much. Rest of the album is bad/ok/good.
Cannot say no to a good old 80's synth and a catchy rythm... at least for a while. Cyndi works in small doses for me a full album is too much despite the two bangers.
Annoying voice at times, but some good hits
I actually enjoyed this album more than I thought I would.
Time after time, maar ook het latere True Colors.
Loses a star because I rolled my car to time after time years ago
She really is.
Money Changes Everything följt av Girls Just Want To Have Fun.
Time after Timeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Overraskende consistent plade! Mange bangers
Enjoyed. More now than I did then.
A pop classic.
Ik word toch gewoon best blij van een pop album af en toe.`Is dit een technisch hoogstaand album? Geen idee, I just wanna have fun! Hoor ik nou wat early synthpop/wave daar by When You Were Mine? Lekker man! Outro van When you wre mine is wel erg meh. Girls just wanna have fun!, When you were mine, Time after time, Ill kiss you
I used to love this woman in elementary school lol. I was proud of myself for how fast I recognized the prince cover
There are some fantastic, decade defining songs, as well as some real annoying ones. Her voice can really irritate me at times, which takes away from the rest of the music.
Great 80's album. Cyndi reminds me of watching Goonies as a kid. I like a lot of the songs on this album, even the ones that aren't so popular. It reminds me of good times.
Iconic 80's album. I heard much of this on the radio and its songs were a MTv staple. It definitely brings me back, but ultimately a little too "poppy" for me.
Bring back real pop music!!!!!!!! i wish there was more pop music on this list. Captivated my attention and is different than a lot of pop music that i’ve listened to and she’s so punk top 3 - time after time, witness, girls just wanna have fun
From the first note it's pure unbridled 80s pop - massive synths, gated drums pounding out a big slow beat you can still dance to, a bit of dirty guitar, a huge hook. An extremely fun album totally lacking in self seriousness but certainly more than just a bit of disposable bubblegum pop. I thought I was only familiar with Girls Just Want to Have Fun as a one off from 80s pop compilations but there are so many hits I recognize that were just floating around the 90s cultural detritus. It takes some guts to think, "yeah, Prince is pretty good, but I know what If You Were Mine really mine needs is to slow down and make room for a bit of mall-core." Heard a whole, there's a lot more akin to new wave and teh quirky synthy side of post-punk than I expected. Other than the visuals, this (Money Changes Everything especially) really isn't that different to Born in the USA era Bruce Springsteen, just branded as suburban pop instead of heartland rock.
Too whinny for me but girls just wanna have fun
Some tracks had decent Lyrical performances and instrumental backings, however some are tone deaf, utterly distasteful, unbelievably bad.
This album is definitely evocative of an era, not only of music but of fashion and culture. For that alone it probably deserves a place on this list. Personally, though, I never much cared for her voice - a bit too shrill for my taste. Annoying, in fact, most of the time. But then there are gems like Time After Time that show that she does have a sweeter tone and can do softer, emotional songs as well as party anthems like Girls Just Want to Have Fun. All in all, not my thing, especially since I never cared for 80s pop when it was the 80s, but still an important album in the greater history of music. For me, a 1.5, for the latter, a 4. I guess that balances out to a 3.
2,5
3.5
Very good
Good fun songs, and well-deserved hits. Does start to feel “same-y” after a while.
The timing of this is funny, as I just saw a video last night of people bashing Cyndi and saying that she was a one-hit wonder. This album proves that incorrect, and cements her as one of the greatest pop singers of all time.
I'm having trouble rating this album because it's got some undeniable, timeless hits like 'Girls just wanna have fun' or 'Time after time', as well as some okay-ish songs like 'All through the night' and 'When you were mine', but then there are also several tracks that sound very outdated and are just plain annoying to my ears. There's also the fact that I'm not the biggest fan of Cyndi Lauper's voice, especially when she tries to do the odd vocal effects like all the whining or grunting that were popular back then (Madonna was also doing that for a time). I'm not saying she isn't a talented singer; it's just that the way she's using her voice isn't exactly doing it for me. This album isn't a bad example of 80s pop, though. 3 stars
Maybe I had to be there, in the 80s, wearing shock-patterned stockings. But I'd listen to better pop.
i enjoyed this, but nothing about it makes me really love Cyndi Lauper after this. Girls just want to have fun is so iconic, but i find that it is too repetitive... it gets old by the second chorus in my opinion. it is a fun song, but i tend to skip it. time after time is also another banger, and has really stood the test of time. i enjoyed Money Changes Everything too, but i found myself enjoying Lauper's vocals... but not enjoying the artistic style of the music. ive discovered through the course of these albums that i really don't enjoy new wave. there are elements of that within this, and i think that is what drags down my rating. ultimately its probably a 2.5, but ill give the credit where credit is due.
Huippu kasari poppia. Tosi menevää ja hyväntuulista. Parhaat: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Time After Time, Yeah Yeah
Cheesy 80s pop, we all know the score.
Not as silly or grating as one remembers from back in the actual day, but only slightly more substantive-seeming, despite the presence of considerably more hits than one recalled. It’s inexplicable that this was such a hit in the first place, considering the shrill vocal quality and style, which is distnctive, sure, and which some may dig, but one decidedly does not. CL’s presence in pharma ads recently doesn't much help with the explicability. “Time After Time” is a lovely tune (if it's good enough for Miles) and one was surprised to learn from Pitchfork's recent (June 2024) Sunday review that she wrote it. "All Through the Night" is also good, another song capable of withstanding her vocals. The light-ska of “Witness” is a grace note, a surprisingly pleasant trifle. One gives her some credit for succeeding on her own terms and for overcoming poverty, abuse, etc. and for the obvious, all-in passion. However, on any sort of objective or aesthetic basis this isn’t lasting quality (just hear some of the sinfully cheesy synths) or even particularly enjoyable. Rather it’s best viewed as a snapshot of minor importance, a relic of a distinct musical time – a fun and changeful time indeed. And funny to think she and Madonna were once rivals.
Thought it held up reasonably well.
Okay så tre ting: 1: Det her giver mig lyst til at leve i 80'erne 2: Det her rating system burde være fra 1-10 3: Jeg håber ikke trommeslageren kun var timelønnet for sin tid brugt i studiet.
I remember a few tracks when they were in the charts. Actually a better album than I thought it would have been, but not something I’d listen to frequently purely due to my taste in music.
Okay so Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Time After Time are fantastic songs and worth the listen on this album, the last two songs feels like a weird add-on or Cyndi's stream of consciousness put on tape. He's So Unusual is like a 45 second Betty Boop impression and Yeah Yeah a B-52's track that didnt make the cut.
It’s fine the singles are what makes it tbh
Two absolute classics in amongst some typical 80’s fare.
money changes everything tönt wie girls just wanna have fun, sehr vo sinere ziit. aber s isch en guete song so. afoch extreeem 1983. girls just wanna have fun kenntmer halt. gitarre intro seehr cool. es isch jedi sekunde dureproduziert und duredenkt. mir sind die prekussionsdinger nonie ufgfalle. bi you were mine wird ihri stimm langsam es ding hä. scho ehner höch. ah time afger time isch au vo ihre. do singt sie jo inere mega agnehme stimmlag? und s isch es duett. wer ihm? und de bass seeehr cool im refrain. schöne song. she bop goht anschinend um wiblichi masturbation. guet so. all through the night kenni au?? soooo viel hits??? eigentli au en banger. synthiega funny. witness isch sochli ska findi etz chli dünn und ass aber ich bin au definitiv kein ska guy ill kiss you macht wieder synth stuff recht funky? wird langsam chli lang de song. aber de synthbass isch immerno geil ey. yeah yeah isch reeecht geil. d orgle isch etz nöd de hammer so vom sound her und ihri chinderstimm nervt mit de ziit. aber guets album mit huuuere viel hits.

There are several hits here, which are probably the better songs of the album. Every song is pure ‘80s — lots of synths, generally upbeat, fun to sing along with, etc. Sometimes Lauper’s vocals are a bit much to take in, but that’s part of the appeal I suppose.
She's So Unusual, pleasantly surprised me with its vibrant and eclectic mix that firmly establishes Cyndi to be a unique voice in the pop landscape. I found Side A to be undeniably the stronger half, packed with energetic and memorable tracks like Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time. Lauper's distinctive voice and quirky personality really shine through, making these songs feel like timeless classics. However, as the album progresses into Side B, the momentum starts to wane. The songs became less impactful, and the heavy use of keyboards began to feel overly cheesy and dated. Tracks like Witness and I’ll Kiss You lacked the punch and innovation that I enjoyed so much in the earlier songs. Despite these issues, Lauper's vocal performance remains consistently strong, and her charisma keeps me engaged. The production, while occasionally over the top, fits the playful and rebellious spirit of the album. Overall, it's a solid debut with standout moments that firmly cement Cyndi Lauper's place in 80s pop history. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 4 STAND OUT TRACK - Time After Time
Had this as a cassette in my youth. Lots of filler so lots of skips but some great songs and I enjoy Cyndi Lauper's vocals and writing (mostly)
Cyndi is a great 80s icon. I was very familiar with the hits on the album. Fun Pop album overall. Out of songs I hadn’t heard I enjoyed Money Changes Everything most. Time after Time and All Through The Night were/are my favorites on the album. Girls just wanna have fun is a great tune to be introduced to/know.
This is as 80s as 80s pop gets really, which is not really a bad thing. It's a fairly competent and fun pop record that ultimately gets carried by its most notable (and understandably so) single: "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." The backhalf of it is really nothing to write home about.
Tämähän on tällaista ei-taiteellista Kate Bushia. Ihan hyvää pop-musiikkia! 3/5
Kylhän tää toimii, vaikkei ole ihan kasaripopin suosikkilaitaa. 3/5
Varsin virkistävä pop-levy, ja megahitti, vaikkakin paljolti kulunut, on silti toimiva. 3/5
I wanted to like this but I couldn't get myself to care past the singles
Fun pop album.
Nuthin' like hitting the open roads and crankin' up some Cyndi L. Side two gets too new wavy for me, but side one with its' Springsteen-esque grandeur is terrific. 'Time After Time' is perfect.
A very fun new wave album full of bops and led by two massive and incredible singles. I was going to give this a 4 but the backing vocals of the closing track Yeah Yeah were incredibly annoying
5/6/24. Good 80s pop with some memorable tunes (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Time After Time). Good themes as well. I understand why this record is remembered years later.
I was excited to hear this album in full as I really like the two massive singles "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time" but I was rather disappointed to find that the other songs on this record aren't nearly as good. There's an awful lot of filler to be found here. If I had to pick album highlights from the non-singles then I guess I'd go with "She Bop" and "Yeah Yeah". Still, it's hard to give this less than 3* knowing how good those singles are.
3 “I like your sleeves. They’re real big.” I wasn’t really sure what to expect with this one, but it’s surprisingly enjoyable. Granted, it also very much feels like a product of its time, but I think you would have to be the wettest of wet blankets to not have at least a little bit of fun with this. You really can’t go wrong with the first four tracks in particular, with Money Changes Everything and When You Were Mine being the two surprises here for me. Both are incredibly fun, energetic, and catchy, with the latter also being a great take on Prince. To be honest, I’m actually more familiar with the song in the form of the later Bright Eyes cover (forgive me), but after listening to this album, I gotta say, I think Cyndi did it best. And then you have the two mega-hits, Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time, which are also both mostly enjoyable, though I gotta say, Girls has been overplayed to death (it’s also a bit cheesy), and I can’t hear Time without thinking of Napoleon Dynamite (see opening quote). As for the rest of this album - pretty standard 80s fare. Don’t have much else to say about it, though dialing in on and re-evaluating the lyrics of She Bop was interesting after learning about the controversy surrounding it. Is it sexist that this song was scorned and Dancing With Myself wasn’t? Probably, it was the 80s ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also, I kind of dug the ragtime segue He’s So Unusual, which is apparently a cover of an old Betty Boop song - it’s a cute way to set up the closing of the album. Nothing spectacular, and there’s nothing I’m immediately jumping to save on Spotify, but it’s for sure a fun slice of the era.
Some big cuts from Cyndi. This album came out during my college years, and took the radio world by the tail. Girls Just Wanna is still played with some regularity today. I thought it was a pretty stupid song in the day, but it is a catchy little beat in its simplicity. While I recognize the big hits here, I never listened to the whole album until today, and I was surprised to discover…. Her voice sucks! WTF? By today’s Pop standard, she’d be a YouTube curiosity at best. I’m glad she had her success in the 80’s, when shit music was the standard, and I hope royalties keep rolling in until her last squeak.
pretty of it’s time i think.
Started off really strong but kind of got weaker as it went on past the first half. The start of this album is goated though
3/5 - Standard Rating Feelgood record, Catchy songs that you can easily find yourself humming along with. Not necessarily my thing but objectively good tracks, enjoyed my listen. Favourites on first listen: - Girls Just Want to Have Fun (obviously) - She Bop - All Through the Night
6 / 10 Cyndi Lauper solo hay una. Tiene un par de éxitos buenisimos, pero el disco entero es demasiado petardo
Good album. Found a couple tracks a bit shrill and a bit like it was being sung by a 12 year old. But equally some really good tracks and these more than make up for the others. 7/10
Prima hitjes op deze plaat. Ze zingt een beetje vervelend, maar daar kon ik op gegeven moment ook wel inkomen
The singles are pure 80s nostalgia, but the other tracks realllly do not hold up very well.
Surprisingly good album. The musicianship is much better than you might expect as it's overshadowed by the fame of Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Wonderful voice, interesting, a bit different, but good. Time After Time is an amazing love song, so much better than many dull expressions of so-called love by artists such as, say, Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston - not to mention more bubblegum stuff. You can tell Cyndi came up the hard way, battling for her success. Interesting and strong songs on this one. Marred by the production values of its time.
Some solid bangers in here, damn.
Two classics but I didn’t love the rest
Some classics, started well but by end found her voice limiting and made me think i prefer the original. 7/10 too many fillers
Some good songs but not the whole album.
A little heavy on the synthesizer but some classic 80’s songs.
A couple of great songs and some filler. Best song is obviously Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, but there's more good ones on the record.
Solid bops, there were a few tracks that I was iffy on but overall solid listen for this project
Annoyingly repetitive pop
3, 4 Welthits auf einem Album, die jeder kennt. Der Rest ganz OK.
I've always considered "Time After Time" one of my favorite songs of all time. Oddly I'd never thought to listen to the album it was on. Of course some of the songs were very familiar to me, having been alive in the late 80s...albeit very young. I have to add that I appreciated the synthesizer sounds this album puts out, they felt magical here and there, like they do.
A pretty solid album with a lot of famous tracks. Not that much filler either. Solidly in the 80s, of course. But a landmark. 3.5
I mean, it's our Cindi Lauper. We just want to have fun right? Nothing heavy, nothing fancy. It's Cindi Lauper.
She may have been so unusual at the time, but Cyndi Lauper became the archetype of the 1980s American girl. It wasn’t just that she wanted to have fun - she wanted to break away from the stereotypes and constraints put on women in American culture.
Nice fun vibe, time flew by before I knew it. I'll Kiss You is a bop.
The front half of this album was a 5. The back half of this album gets a 1. Cyndi has a unique voice, and when it works it works. And when it doesn’t she sounds like a fucking giggle stick. Or a groan tube. Whatever it’s called. Also minus points because the transition in He’s So Unusual almost made me crash my car.
3 songs I really liked but didn’t enjoy the others. Very hit or miss. Rating: 3.1
good but dated - 3.5
Solid debut album with some real classics. Her voice always boarders on annoying, but it also pulls me in a bit at the same time. Not sure what else to say about it.
1st listen thoughts: First 6 songs are great, second half of the album isn't as good. Really like the synths and the 80s sound. Very good album, tied with Elliot Smith for my favorite so far. Listened 3 times like it more each time. Her voice is very unique, the album cover is great, production is really good. Overall really good album. 7.3/10 Favorite songs: Time After Time All Through the Night She Bop Yeah Yeah
Classic! Never really gave any recognition to Cyndi but after this I can appreciate that this is a pretty decent album. The album cover suits the music so well
Bangers mostly. But has some curveball that just add to the pitch count without getting anywhere
good songs, i find the popular songs a bit annoying at this point because i hear them literally all the time but there’s no denying they’re good songs, album was okay overall, 6/10
Eh, its alright
The lead single from this album gets on every last nerve. This came out when I was in 7th and I didn’t like it then and I don’t like it now. Money Changes Everything is the best song from this album. I thought she had written all these songs - only a partial credit on some.
First half very good, second half a bit rubbish 2.5/5
Album has some great songs but I can't help think it's being sung by sherry and Terry from the Simpsons
I was 12 years old when this album came out, and I recall that I had a 45 of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" that got a lot of play in my house. Never got around to hearing the whole album, although it's so packed with hits that I almost feel like I have. These songs were all over the place for the next couple of years and Cyndi Lauper was an MTV darling. Listening to it today, I'm struck at how strong most of the singles are. It's a nice mix of the heartfelt and the wacky that fit right into the landscape of early 80s pop and new wave. The arrangements are bright and catchy and Lauper has a lovely voice, when she cares to be serious with it. The affected baby voice and other silly touches that appear on some of these songs plant the album squarely in its time and aren't particularly fun to listen to now. The songwriting is of course all over the map, coming from a hodgepodge of songwriters. Lauper's own songwriting collaborations are a mixed bag, ranging from the marvelous "Time After Time" to the straight up bad "I'll Kiss You." Side 1 is definitely where the best songs reside, and side 2 starts off strong. But the quality slides quickly after "All Through the Night" and never recovers. Fave Songs: Time After Time, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, She Bop, Money Changes Everything, All Through the Night, When You Were Mine
Never really digged Cyndi Lauper. This album was probably very innovative when it came out, and I would probably have loved it in the 80s but new wave, and lauper especially, has been milked to death. If this album came out today, it would be branded as yet another unoriginal pop artist who wanted to feel cool by adding punk elements to their songs. One song is alright once in a while, but a whole Lauper album is TOO MUCH.
Had some bangers!
Agree with Jamie. There was some canny parts to this but I wasnt sold on the vocals. Felt a bit forced. Parts passed me by too, but I think it’s more to do with me not being a massive fan of this sound in general. That said, the songs that were good I really enjoyed: when you were mine, She Bop, Yeah Yeah all being highlights. Doubt I’d be back but glad I heard it
Time After Time and Girls Just Want to Have Fun aside, the rest of the album was mostly alright. Consistent production, very 80's, loads of synth. He's So Unusual was incredibly irritating though, faux record player, honky-tonk keys, pathetic lyrics and unnecessarily fey singing. It riled me, so -1.
Very clearly 80s, but the good kind. I agree that she is trying hard to be cute, but it works on me! Girls just wanna have fun and time after time are both pretty iconic. I did like the sound of some of the others too, but can't say I'll be rushing back. Better then plenty of other similar things from the period
Some great classics, and some so-so very 80's stuff.
Side one’s great - side two, not so much - from the ‘Time After Time’ to the ‘He’s so Unusual’.
This one is alright. Some good hits, sometimes her voice feels too exaggerated. Will I listen to again: 5%
Somewhat nostalgic
Fun 80s pop with that amazing voice!
Grated AF
Two all-time classics on a debut album has to give Cyndi some love. I liked the whole album. All upbeat, catchy songs. Nothing really blew me away, but a positive experience overall.
I think I’ve told y’all about it before but that documentary on Netflix “the greatest night in pop”. Cyndi lauper is in it and man is she freakin weird. Like definitely someone I would never want to hang out with but when it comes for her time to sing, it’s like shockingly amazing. Very powerful voice and tone is spot on. And she’s pretty much one of the only female singers they asked to be on that song which is really saying something. Oh ya the album, ya it’s ok.
I’ve got a huge soft spot for 80s synth pop and Cyndi Lauper is an icon, so I was excited for this one considering it put her on the map and has three of her most famous songs. Is it a little dated at this point being 40 years old? Sure, but I think that’s part of the appeal. That being said, there are a couple songs on this album that just don’t do it for me and drag it down. And I really didn’t see any point in He’s so Unusual, like what? Also, even though her version is a classic hit, the Quietdrive version of Time After Time is in the conversation for covers better than the original.
Okay
Two awesome pop hits and one muddling cover of a great Prince song; lots of shiny 80s pop. Quite middle of the road, fair but not as stunning as I was expecting - perhaps it’s status has been elevated by the couple of hits?
I like the cool pop/rock and synthpop turn, it’s got energy and originalith
Fun
Great songs on here. Really loved when you were mine, the opening track, and ofc girls just wanna
Very nice tunes, the moto in the label says at all. "she is so unsuall" indeed, her voice goes nearly to the cartoon universe, closer to bee gees group. is nice too see something so unique reach so many.
As far as 80's pop goes, this was pretty good. It's basically maxed out at a 3 due to the genre, so...great job.
The 2 hits on this album are great songs. The rest however is not. Half the time she is singing beautifully and then the other half she uses this awful baby voice that is unlistenable
Bra låtar!
A few songs reminded me of why the 80s were cool. The other songs reminded me of why I hate 80s music.
Her voice gets a little old.
This was strongly 80s. The synth was pervasive. This album is home to girls just wanna have fun. 3 I guess
I’ve heard of cyndi lauper but couldn’t didn’t know these songs were hers. The album is good, very upbeat happy songs mixed with smaller slow songs. It’s ok and I enjoyed it, nothing special though Favourite songs: - Time after time - She bop
Some truly amazing songs. Some not so great songs. Amazing voice.
So, this takes me back to being 13. I never know if that's a good thing or not - being 13 can be pretty fucking terrible. I know a couple of the songs of course and I think I remember seeing her on Top of the Pops. The voice is generally fine - although the best moments on the album are when it slows down on Time After Time and on Money Changes Everything where there's a change of pace. But it's the early 80s and it's pop. So that means those drums. Or drum sounds. That are just so in your face. Not a lot of room for subtlety across the album and it all gets a bit wearing after a track or two. Relentless. Which is probably why I prefer the album when something different's going on. But it's OK pop music. There's a lot worse out there, although I doubt I'd listen to the whole album again.
Has some absolute bangers but the other songs are a little underwhelming in comparison.
It was too pop for me back in the day, still is, but it did bring back good memories.
A bop. Would bring out in a party. A few really good songs, some boppy but middling songs. All of her best songs in a convenient location!
When Cyndi Lauper came up, I was disappointed and didn’t want to listen. But then when listening to the album, I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it more than I expected. A number of big hits came from this album.
Quality sound. Some huge hits.
another classic album a little too whiney in some of her songs overall pretty good i love time after time
I am not sure why this album is on a list of albums that one has to listen to before they die. There is no denying CYNDI Lauper's talent and success. This album in particular produced 4-5 hits. It's pleasant and fun, but not sure beyond that.
No es mi estilo pero es un buen disco
Pretty good 80's pop album. Enjoyed listening through each track.
kinda nice
Album perfectly encapsulates the early 80s female pop movement. Solid record. 3.5/5
Go off queen, she's so quirky. This is what all those really buff bodybuilders listen to in the gym while bench pressing 250kg. It's good, I enjoyed it.
5.5/10
It started with this heavy 80's vibe and I thought I had never heard Cyndi, but then Time after time started, and it clicked I've heard hear before, and I like the song enough to give the whole album 4/5 just for that song, but let's be impartial and continue hearing. Well 3/5 the other songs did not stick at all.
The album starts off with a banger. Seems like a bridge between 80s synth pop and the working class Americana (Bruce Springsteen) of the early 90s. This is evident in the themes throughout the album which include anti materialism, feminism, LGBTQ issues. She has pipes tho. Girls Wanna Have Fun has some great harmonizing and catchy synth riffs.
Lots of fun synth and new wave and some really great songs. Definitely from the era where albums were half great songs and half filler
Heard it a million times. Very good debut. Fun quirky pop. Probably not an all timer
i wanted to like it more than i did, but there were two iconic songs on there that i adore, and it was a cool album i guess, just not for me, i also hated that on he’s unusual, i couldn’t hear out of one headphone, but i guess it made it unusual lol.
Really didn’t listen to her back then. Later on discovered her voice was awesome.
I'm not too familiar with Cyndi Lauper. I've heard a couple of her songs, Girls Just Want To Have Fun and Time After Time of course. My first introduction to her was probably in The Goonies. I get the comparisons to Madonna for sure. A couple solid tracks, a lot of pretty standard 80s pop but if that's what you like then this would be a great album for you.
Not too sure what to expect, but it was an interesting listen, upbeat and fun.
Yasss queeen
Buen pop con dos temazos quemados en la radio y con un par de temas interesantes pero que no me vuelven especialmente loco.
Manic Monday.
It is mostly one hit wonder. It has it's other fine tracks but nothing mindblowing. Just fine mid 80s album.
Money Changes Everything - 8/10 Girls Just Want To Have Fun - 9/10 When You Were Mine - 8.5/10 Time After Time - 9/10 She Bop - 8/10 All Through the Night - 7.5/10 Witness - 7/10 I'll Kiss You -8/10 He's So Unusual - 6.5/10 Yeah Yeah - 8/10 TOTAL - 79.5/100
What a great throwback. Stands the test of... Time after time
Girls just want to have fun, nothing more
Mixed feelings about this one. Has two really really iconic songs, but the rest or the album just isn't keeping up
It was ok
Music i grew up with. 4 songs that I loved. The rest were ok.
The second half let it down a bit but the first half is banger after banger. I'm going 3.5 but I can understand a 4 here. Some great synth lines.
I normally don't like 80's pop and synth-y stuff, but this album surprised me. Need to rewatch some John Hughes films. Did a bit of googling after hearing When You Were Mine and found out she's a huge LGBTQ advocate so that's dope. Go women!
Great album with a bunch of hits - not really my vibe, but there's a time and a place when its worth a listen.
Several hits but the album overall is just ok.
Fun but strange album. Again you can see why certain songs are hits and others get lost along the way.
Big synthesizer sound and so campy for the dance tunes. More real on the slower tunes. Feels so dated now but still fun to listen to
Det var okay. Nogle gode sange som Time after Time og Money Changes Everything, men ingenting der greb mig mega meget. Skal dog lyttes til igen
Very.. How could I say it Normal?
Fantastic voice and some memorable tunes.
Netter 80'er Jahre Pop. Enthält ein paar Dauerbrenner: "Girls just wanna have fun", "Time After Time", "She Bop". Drei Sterne ***
3.5
Honestly, I don’t think it would ever cross my mind to listen to a full album by Cyndi Lauper. It was a pleasant surprise and the fact that it has two of the most iconic songs of 80s’ pop, should be impressive by itself. [0108/1001]
"She's so Unusual" feels a bit out of place, for me, on this list, as the album, as a whole doesn't feel entirely essential or substantial upon listening. However, it is impressive it was her first solo album with "Girls Just Wanna" and "Time After Time," as those songs are still played regularly today and obviously had a large impact on the pop music charts at the time. The album very much is a time capsule, and that is notable, but I can't imagine myself wanting to listen to the entire album again.
Werde nie verstehen, wieso time after time so ein Klassiker geworden ist. Platte ist an und für sich nicht schlecht, ich finde es musikalisch aber irgendwie sehr monoton. Und bin auch kein großer Fan von cindys Stimme. Lieb gemeinte 6/10 weil 2-3 Songs wirklich Spaß machen
I liked this more than I would have thought. I only knew the singles but the rest was surprisingly solid. It peters out a little towards the end. I prefer princes version of when you were mine. I give 3/5.
Pop, MTV stuff.
Super fun album, just not something I would listen on repeat.
Das ist schon eher meins. Freche Stimme.
Oujea
Her Voice comes sometimes a bit too much annoying to me, but i still found soe songs i really liked a lot. The highs are high and the lows are low. I liked the speaking and background Talking in Yeah Yeah cause it made it interesting and i dindt thought it was too much at one time. Hit Song: Time After Time Other favs: She Bop, Yeah Yeah
It’s ok but probably won’t listen to it again
At least a bonus star for "Girls just wanna have fun"
Cool haircut.
Pari megalekaa ja muu levy jokseenkin kuunneltavaa.
Menevä ja tasalaatuinen
3.5
Some good tracks but not really my thing
