good fkn album
Hard to decide how good this album was without all the nostalgia associated with it for me. I have had this record in my collection since I was 4 years old. It’s a great listen and a great album but how much rotation do I give it? Not that much
Time After Time, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and maybe Money Changes Everything are about the only great songs here. The rest range from fine to extremely annoying, with the last 2 songs being the absolute fucking worst. Not a fan of Lauper's voice, nor of the production. Funny how the big singles sound fine, but the rest of the album is just mixed oddly. Thought this would be a lot better than it actually is, disappointing
Such a great album. The last three songs are meh, although they might grow on me with repeated listening. But the rest, well, they're fabulous. It's a delightful album.

This feels like a warning about how American centric this list may be. With so many exciting and innovative artists making music in the 80s, it seems incomprehensible to me that this uninspired and clichéd album could be in anyone's top 100,000 albums, let alone 1000. There's a couple of songs on here, Girls Just Want To Have Fun and Time After Time that are okay, a few that are mediocre and the rest are just incredibly grating with Lauper's vocals turning a bland song into an annoying one. The idea that someone, who presumably has listened to at least several thousand albums thought this was an album to be lauded has made me feel quite angry. It's like claiming Meghan Traynor is the most innovative and exciting artist of the 21st century. Absolute toilet.
Side A is sort of flawless, energy is top in the first four songs. Second half is there in bits and pieces but lacks the punch evident in the first half. When you were mine, money changes everything and girls just want to have fun favs

The first half is very strong without any bad songs. 'Time After Time' and 'All Through the Night' in particular are amazing. Shoutout also to the iconic 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun', making this album loaded with the hits. The B-side, though, is less than impressive. Not a perfect album, but close.

it contains a couple of famous hits but the rest of the tracks almost pass by unnoticed when playing the whole album
"Time after time" one of my favourite songs. "Girls ..." I listened already too way too much. Rest of the album is bad/ok/good.
Cannot say no to a good old 80's synth and a catchy rythm... at least for a while. Cyndi works in small doses for me a full album is too much despite the two bangers.

1983, na alle postpunk waren we wel weer even toe aan wat vrolijkheid. Onzen Cindy ('Wa, gij op tillevisie?') leverde dat. De jaren tachtig, ja, maar het klinkt nog steeds fris. Een paar hits erop, Girls just wanna have fun wordt wereldwijd nog meegeblèrd op vrouwelijke vrijgezellenavonden. Dikke prima en terecht in de lijst.
Eerlijk is eerlijk. Je kan niet echt om Cyndi heen. Ze heeft toch wat gemaakt dat ook nu nog iedereen mee kan zingen. Dus ok, het hoort hier in. Maar dat maakt het voor mij niet gelijk fijn om te luisteren. Het is allemaal heel erg jaren '80. Met een stem die wat geforceerd en vervormd overkomt. Als ze zichzelf wat kinderlijker maakt.
Bizar dat twee van de populairste vrouwelijke artiesten uit de 80s voor geen meter konden zingen. Cyndi en Madonna bedoel ik dan. Ze moeten het meer hebben van de vorm, met synths, drumcomputers. En af en toe ook goed geschreven liedjes, dat toch wel. Powerpop voor powervrouwen. Toch vind ik de ingetogen nummers van haar het beste. Time after time, maar ook het latere True Colors. Dat zijn de echte evergreens gebleken. Met name op kant twee staan toch voornamelijk hele matige opvullertjes. Het is ook duidelijk dat Cyndi fan is van musicals en oude films. Door de hitjes wil ik het nog wel een 3 geven, maar het is op het randje.

listening to this, i tried my best to appreciate how this would have sounded 41 years ago in 80s discos, but even this couldn’t compensate for how dull this record was. when listening to music, i try to find meaning in the lyrics, and if being honest, pauper’s lyrics felt uninspiring and often non-sensical. the use of synths was mildly interesting, but was so similar on each track that i switched off easily i gave this album 2 stars solely for how iconic ‘girls just wanna have fun’ has become, the only song with any real character on the album. despite this, i can imagine that if you are an 80s pop fan, this would be a great album.
I found a copy of this album on vinyl at a Salvation Army about a month ago, and it was in pretty good condition, so I bought it. What the hell, for $3, right? Now, I was in high school when this album burst onto the scene, and I thought I knew it because of all the hits that erupted from it, but upon listening to it end-to-end, I gained a much greater respect for it and for Cyndi Lauper. Here delivery at times reminds me of David Johansen (New York Dolls, Buster Poindexter), but a few octaves higher. At other times, her Betty Boop inflection was on-point and intentional. What really struck me is how strong an album, as a single artistic work, this is. It's not High Art, but it's a damn good product and example of 80's synth-pop. I'm surprised I didn't have a taped copy for my Walkman back in the day.
Cyndi Lauper had all the chops to much so grander and this album is a work of art! The synths and pop mixes combined with her feminist takes behind those vocals are just incredible!

Pure 80s new wave pop goodness.
The first half of this really brought back my younger days - "Time after Time" and "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" are absolute classics. The later stages didn't grab me quite as much, but the general vibe was good.
Money Changes Everything följt av Girls Just Want To Have Fun. Ironiskt och kul. Cyndi Lauper är hundra gånger coolare än Madonna. Varför blev hon inte större? Det är så mycket 80 tal att hjärnan får synthfrys men som historisk tidsdokument är ett en bra skiva.
Bitvis riktigt bra å så kommer she bop tex. Tror jag hade diggat mer som ung. Money changes... Hade jag nog inte hört och är en kul överraskning.
Alltid gillat Cyndis röst och första halvan av den här skivan är riktigt bra, även om det förstås är väldigt 80-taligt. Räcker till en svag fyra på totalen.

This was a bit of me - cheesy 80s pop is very much my thing. The hits are so fucking massive too. Enjoyable record.
Two songs on this album - "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time" - are still good, and it was nice to revisit them. But the remaining songs are typical 80's New Wave - drum machines and synthetic keyboards.
Powerful voice. But that's already everything noteworthy.

I figured this would wind up as a 1 or 2, but it did not grate on me the way her music did years ago. So I'll go with the 2. It's pop, which I've never taken to. Also, I had an aversion to Lauper videos.years back, so a 2 is some maturation for me.

I can see some appeal overlap with David Bowie from an instrumental perspective. Cyndis singing style sometimes reminds me of Tom Petty. This album is alot of fun, time after time.
Ik word toch gewoon best blij van een pop album af en toe.`Is dit een technisch hoogstaand album? Geen idee, I just wanna have fun! Hoor ik nou wat early synthpop/wave daar by When You Were Mine? Lekker man! Outro van When you wre mine is wel erg meh. Nee dit album is een prettig pop-rock album. Ik vermaak me er prima mee en irriteer me eigenlijk nergens aan. Ik denk dat Cyndi zichzelf heeft gevolgd en gewoon is gegaan voor FUN! Ok Yeah yeah is echt een heel raar nummer, vind die weer wat minder, maar I'll Kiss You daarvoor was wel weer echt fun. Great Album, great songs and you can definitely still hear her influence in modern songs nowadays. No matter if it‘s pop-rock or pop in general.

Kind of shocked going back through this how much I love it. There's very little fluff on the collection, just banger after banger after banger. This is fantastic 80's synth pop and the songwriting choices transcend the genre. Great covers, great unique vocals, great time.
Not that inspiring
There are some fantastic, decade defining songs, as well as some real annoying ones. Her voice can really irritate me at times, which takes away from the rest of the music.
The singles are great, but this is really a good album start to finish. Also like the length, made for an easy listen all the way through.
Great 80's album. Cyndi reminds me of watching Goonies as a kid. I like a lot of the songs on this album, even the ones that aren't so popular. It reminds me of good times.

This one has some of her best known work - Time after time, girls just want to have fun, all through the night - definitely a lot of bops (including She bop!). Very upbeat and fun.
Iconic 80's album. I heard much of this on the radio and its songs were a MTv staple. It definitely brings me back, but ultimately a little too "poppy" for me.

8/10. Felt like I was a kid in the pool listening to mom’s music again. Some of it was nostalgic but a lot of it I thought was really good. Slow start but enjoyed: Time after Time, All Through the Night, Yeah Yeah Yeah. Short album, but very fun.
From the first note it's pure unbridled 80s pop - massive synths, gated drums pounding out a big slow beat you can still dance to, a bit of dirty guitar, a huge hook. An extremely fun album totally lacking in self seriousness but certainly more than just a bit of disposable bubblegum pop. I thought I was only familiar with Girls Just Want to Have Fun as a one off from 80s pop compilations but there are so many hits I recognize that were just floating around the 90s cultural detritus. It takes some guts to think, "yeah, Prince is pretty good, but I know what If You Were Mine really mine needs is to slow down and make room for a bit of mall-core." Heard a whole, there's a lot more akin to new wave and teh quirky synthy side of post-punk than I expected. Other than the visuals, this (Money Changes Everything especially) really isn't that different to Born in the USA era Bruce Springsteen, just branded as suburban pop instead of heartland rock.
Not my type of music still but funk is funk and that is the point of this challenge.
Going into this album, I knew it could go one of two ways: either a sleazy 80’s bubble gum pop album or an 80’s pop album with substance and quality. Thankfully, it was the latter. Although this is definitely an 80’s pop album aimed at the same crowd as Madonna, Cyndi Lauper approached it with a more mature touch. I was surprised by how heavily it leaned into new wave and synth pop, which I think made it more acceptable to people like me. Cyndi Lauper found a good balance, making an album that can reach a wider age demographic. Overall, this is a very colorful synth pop album, and it will definitely be added to my list of 80’s synth pop albums I enjoy.
Cyndi Lauper is definitely dated, but the songs are pretty good overall, if not a bit cheesy.

Love All Through the Night When You Were Mine is originally a Prince song Girls Just Wanna Have Fun deserves the recognition it has Cyndi Lauper has been married to her husband since '91 She had to come out as straight because her sister and friends were gay In the 80s they just had the singer dancing around stage, less elaborate than now. As far as I can tell. 85 sticks out as a year I associate with her.
Pop at its finest ! Great songs, engrossing lyrics, still relevant.
Some tracks had decent Lyrical performances and instrumental backings, however some are tone deaf, utterly distasteful, unbelievably bad.
This album is definitely evocative of an era, not only of music but of fashion and culture. For that alone it probably deserves a place on this list. Personally, though, I never much cared for her voice - a bit too shrill for my taste. Annoying, in fact, most of the time. But then there are gems like Time After Time that show that she does have a sweeter tone and can do softer, emotional songs as well as party anthems like Girls Just Want to Have Fun. All in all, not my thing, especially since I never cared for 80s pop when it was the 80s, but still an important album in the greater history of music. For me, a 1.5, for the latter, a 4. I guess that balances out to a 3.

Cyndi Lauper, down on her luck in New York City during the early '80s, gets discovered while singing in a night club. She's signed to a subsidiary label of Epic Records, records her debut album with producer Rick Chertoff, and becomes an overnight hit. With her distinct style and bold personality, there is no wonder why Lauper caught the eye of so many prospective record-buyers. Have you heard her though? God I'm really not a fan of Lauper's voice. And I have to give her some credit her because these are probably some of the catchiest new wave songs ever made. They were even lucky enough to get a song written by Prince and it's not even the best song on here. There's just that barrier of her squeaky, atonal voice that runs throughout every song. I do not like listening to this but I have some respect for how well-made it is. So, whatever.

With her stage antics, demeanor on her late-night appearances, and literally hanging her hat on being young and carefree on her signature hit "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," I expected a debut that would sound dated, immature, and faddish. What I discovered, however, was that Cyndi Lauper was a startlingly mature pop artist who — just after her 20th birthday — released a really enjoyable classic record.
This is the album that not only has the all time classics of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", "Time After Time", "She Bop", and "All Through the Night" but lesser known gems "Money Changes Everything" and "When You Were Mine" and cheeky Betty Boop song "He's So Unusual". SHE'S SO UNUSUAL was important because Lauper's inversion of songs that she covered from a female perspective and her use of a mix of styles including rock, afro-carribean, reggae, boop, and synth-pop influences that prepared American audiences and set the stage for other artists to break through not long after this record, particularly Madonna, who would take Cyndi Lauper's vibe and run with it. Given the seriousness of the subject, Lauper's album manages to be fun and not cringy or preachy, with her cheeky delivery. This album also has the gorgeous full 80s production that so many on this challenge denigrate, but I say to hell with you, I love the "overly done" 80s production style.

An album with a lot of straight up bangers and Cyndi Lauper has such a unique voice. I liked this album quite a bit.

I don't really like Cindy Laupers voice, sounds too screechy to me. Time after time is a great 80's classic, the rest of the songs range from pretty good to awful. I didn't like the last part of the album and the weird reggae-beat song and Beach Boys-esque track on it.

A great pop album, and one that I have a lot of nostalgia for. It might sound pretty weird to someone who's never heard her before, but it's distinctive - I like that. Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time are iconic. She Bop was my favorite as a kid, but All Through the Night is my favorite now. I just learned today that it's a cover, so I went and listened to the original. It was OK, but Cyndi's version is better. Overall, it's a very '80s sounding album, and that's fine with me.

The timing of this is funny, as I just saw a video last night of people bashing Cyndi and saying that she was a one-hit wonder. This album proves that incorrect, and cements her as one of the greatest pop singers of all time.

Excellent album start to finish! Classic pop with a little touch of new wave and ska scattered in.
I'm having trouble rating this album because it's got some undeniable, timeless hits like 'Girls just wanna have fun' or 'Time after time', as well as some okay-ish songs like 'All through the night' and 'When you were mine', but then there are also several tracks that sound very outdated and are just plain annoying to my ears. There's also the fact that I'm not the biggest fan of Cyndi Lauper's voice, especially when she tries to do the odd vocal effects like all the whining or grunting that were popular back then (Madonna was also doing that for a time). I'm not saying she isn't a talented singer; it's just that the way she's using her voice isn't exactly doing it for me. This album isn't a bad example of 80s pop, though. 3 stars

i enjoyed this, but nothing about it makes me really love Cyndi Lauper after this. Girls just want to have fun is so iconic, but i find that it is too repetitive... it gets old by the second chorus in my opinion. it is a fun song, but i tend to skip it. time after time is also another banger, and has really stood the test of time. i enjoyed Money Changes Everything too, but i found myself enjoying Lauper's vocals... but not enjoying the artistic style of the music. ive discovered through the course of these albums that i really don't enjoy new wave. there are elements of that within this, and i think that is what drags down my rating. ultimately its probably a 2.5, but ill give the credit where credit is due.
Easily one of the best albums to come out in the 80s. The pop sound isn't over done. It's catchy and upbeat. Cyndi Lauper created a masterpiece. I don't understand why Madonna is more hyped when this album was there.

Can't say I love every song on the album, but I like quite a lot of them. I only immediately recognized 3 of them, but the rest were engaging enough I listened to them fully.

On the one hand, this album couldn’t be more dated if it was called Lots of 80s Synth! On the other hand, it works pretty damn well without being as stale as most of the reprocessed mall-pop that imitated it and made us sick of that sound.
Cheesy 80s pop, we all know the score.
Not as silly or grating as one remembers from back in the actual day, but only slightly more substantive-seeming, despite the presence of considerably more hits than one recalled. It’s inexplicable that this was such a hit in the first place, considering the shrill vocal quality and style, which is distnctive, sure, and which some may dig, but one decidedly does not. CL’s presence in pharma ads recently doesn't much help with the explicability. “Time After Time” is a lovely tune (if it's good enough for Miles) and one was surprised to learn from Pitchfork's recent (June 2024) Sunday review that she wrote it. "All Through the Night" is also good, another song capable of withstanding her vocals. The light-ska of “Witness” is a grace note, a surprisingly pleasant trifle. One gives her some credit for succeeding on her own terms and for overcoming poverty, abuse, etc. and for the obvious, all-in passion. However, on any sort of objective or aesthetic basis this isn’t lasting quality (just hear some of the sinfully cheesy synths) or even particularly enjoyable. Rather it’s best viewed as a snapshot of minor importance, a relic of a distinct musical time – a fun and changeful time indeed. And funny to think she and Madonna were once rivals.
Obviously, a few very famous tracks on here. Quintessential pop. I particularly liked Witness, but overall, there weren't any flops. A few 'late album' tracks lacking inspiration, but nothing unlistenable. I liked it overall.

Heard the album before, although haven't listened to it often. Great pop album. About as representative of the 80s as any album, but it works. She chose a lot of great songs written by others and put her own signature on them. "The second hand unwinds"
I appreciate Cyndi Lauper, but just not that into the album over all.
Cyndi either has a voice you love or hate, but how you can hear "Time After Time" and say you hate that voice is beyond me. Classic mid 80s pop, hits all the right notes, ticks all the right boxes.

I feel like this might he the single most 80s sounding album ever made. Which unfortunately for my taste is a bad thing. Some fun songs, but not really a lot of music depth or anything else going on. Also not the biggest fan of Cyndi Lauper's singing style. Worth a listen for the time capsule that this album is, but not much else. Top tracks: Time After Time, Witness
I remember a few tracks when they were in the charts. Actually a better album than I thought it would have been, but not something I’d listen to frequently purely due to my taste in music.
Okay so Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Time After Time are fantastic songs and worth the listen on this album, the last two songs feels like a weird add-on or Cyndi's stream of consciousness put on tape. He's So Unusual is like a 45 second Betty Boop impression and Yeah Yeah a B-52's track that didnt make the cut.
I was fully prepared to give this album 3 stars because it was fine and then the last song came on and just what the hell is that about?!? I don’t like her voice or how she sings on most of the songs. “Time After Time” is a great song though!

Cyndi Lauper of the She's So Unusual era and Annie Potts in Pretty in Pink were some of the first dwellers in the swoon city of my mind. Cyndi was some kind of sculptor shaping our young psyches. I could live in the illusion of that record cover art and the lyrics of the album. Cyndi knows about gender and class politics and also just wants to have fun. She bop time after time and all through the night — for good or bad this record is a template that made an impression on millions.
This is a happy record to hang out with, and an example of pick ‘n’ mix A&R-driven track listings working pretty well. Time After Time slays.

Very much a 1980s synth-led pop-rock album; contains the massive "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and one of my favourites "Time After Time", but the rest of the album is meh.

Very "tinny" mastering, lots of upper mids Drums a bit too high in the mix for my taste (snare especially) Love the synth / melodica treatment on Money Changes Everything Not sure if they're using a electronic drum kit but it's quite distracting and sterile sounding, which is a shame I don't mind the guitar tone here, but if it went slightly edgier like Andy Summers / Police sound w/ chorus I think it would've been great For a pop album I think the songwriting is great Time After Time is a classic He's So Unusual - cringe Overall - classic album with pop hits that still stand up 40 years later, the production is a mixed bag - the louder / fast songs seem to benefit from the mix but slower songs like Time After Time, while lyrically great seem to suffer from a less-than-optimal mix.

Cyndi Lauper’s voice has always been like nails on a chalkboard to me and listening to a whole album of it should be a war crime. Time after time is a great song though
I didn't like a lot of music that came out of the eighties, especially the music I was forced to listen to on the radio and NightTrax. To synth heavy, drum machines, bass from as synth. This album is the epitome of 80s music I didn't like. There are a lot of songs that are considered "classics", classics for the eighties, but still classics.
There are several hits here, which are probably the better songs of the album. Every song is pure ‘80s — lots of synths, generally upbeat, fun to sing along with, etc. Sometimes Lauper’s vocals are a bit much to take in, but that’s part of the appeal I suppose.

She's So Unusual, pleasantly surprised me with its vibrant and eclectic mix that firmly establishes Cyndi to be a unique voice in the pop landscape. I found Side A to be undeniably the stronger half, packed with energetic and memorable tracks like Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time. Lauper's distinctive voice and quirky personality really shine through, making these songs feel like timeless classics. However, as the album progresses into Side B, the momentum starts to wane. The songs became less impactful, and the heavy use of keyboards began to feel overly cheesy and dated. Tracks like Witness and I’ll Kiss You lacked the punch and innovation that I enjoyed so much in the earlier songs. Despite these issues, Lauper's vocal performance remains consistently strong, and her charisma keeps me engaged. The production, while occasionally over the top, fits the playful and rebellious spirit of the album. Cyndi is a great 80s icon. I was very familiar with the hits on the album. Fun Pop album overall. Out of songs I hadn’t heard I enjoyed Money Changes Everything most. Time after Time and All Through The Night were/are my favorites on the album. Girls just wanna have fun is a great tune to be introduced to/know.

Oh yeah Oh yeah yeah! This is amazing I literally hear the modern influences to TV girl and even some eilish and Olivia Rodrigo. This is exactly the type of music I love, upbeat and beautiful. I will be bumping this for years god this is such a summer album, especially with how sunny it is today

I don't fuck with the vibe. Not my favourite recommendation from the website. I normally pick some tracks at least, but for that one, I just find the tracks not interesting.
I know the “hits”. I’m looking forward to diving into this. This album is really great and more than just an “80s album”.

Listening to this, I'm transported back to the magical early 80s...the likes of The Thompson Twins, Adam and the Ants, and Howard Jones are doing their thing in the UK charts, Madonna is about to release her first album, and the world doesn't know it yet, but we're counting down to Live Aid. This context makes Cyndi Lauper's debut with such a fresh and different voice and image, even more impressive. And that was further highlighted when she sang so memorably two years later on the US for Africa single 'We Are the World'. N.B. I immediately knew Prince had written the track 'When You Were Mine'...his is such a distinctive sound. I also noticed that Freiheit stole the build-up bit from Cyndi's 'All Through the Night' and used it in the Christmas classic 'Keeping the Dream Alive', released in 1988 :) Favourite track: It has to be Time After Time
I do not like 80s pop music. At all. So you can imagine my chagrin when this popped up this morning. Oddly, It starts off much stronger than I anticipated. Money Changes Everything was almost more punk than pop, with strong lyrical imagery. Even Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the epitome of 80s pop, tells a pretty strong story if you focus on the lyrics. This is where it starts to fall down. When You Were Mine is a bog standard unrequited love pop song, and though Time After Time actually has some really sweet and heartfelt lyrics, the song itself is dreadful, and it just gets worse from there. The last song, Yeah Yeah, has some weird, badly mixed VoiceOver. I don't know if it's supposed to be Betty Boop or something, but it's distracting and annoying and it's definitely crap. I'm going to give it two stars. I'm actually impressed by parts of the album, but the parts that lean into the cliche 80s pop sound are just too bad and too numerous to rate any higher.
This is as 80s as 80s pop gets really, which is not really a bad thing. It's a fairly competent and fun pop record that ultimately gets carried by its most notable (and understandably so) single: "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." The backhalf of it is really nothing to write home about.

I wanted to like this but I couldn't get myself to care past the singles
I think there's a couple good tracks off this album, such as She-Bop and Time After Time. Her vocals on rest of the list were just annoying.
The eightiest poppiest of 80s pop, but some pretty interesting things going on below the surface. Really is a lot of fun.

Nuthin' like hitting the open roads and crankin' up some Cyndi L. Side two gets too new wavy for me, but side one with its' Springsteen-esque grandeur is terrific. 'Time After Time' is perfect.
I enjoyed this way more than I was prepared for. While side two is at times a bit heavy on the new wave, side one is packed with bangers and classics. Cindy Lauper possesses a mesmerizing attitude and songs to back it up; how could you not enjoy “Time After Time”?

She's pretty iconic in her own unique way. None quite like her. Fun to hear some tracks for the first time.
I was excited to hear this album in full as I really like the two massive singles "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time" but I was rather disappointed to find that the other songs on this record aren't nearly as good. There's an awful lot of filler to be found here. If I had to pick album highlights from the non-singles then I guess I'd go with "She Bop" and "Yeah Yeah". Still, it's hard to give this less than 3* knowing how good those singles are.

This album certainly takes me back to the MTV days of the 80's. I know there was a time I felt her music was overplayed and her voice started to wear on me, but damn, I really enjoyed going back in time and listening to this album. After Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, I had forgotten a number of other good songs off this album. And a little musical secret not many people would know about me, I do love the song Time After Time. Something about it touches my heart and I will always let play if it come on the radio. The cover of Prince's When You Were Mine was solid and if you think enough of Prince to cover his music, you're all right in my book. Love the beats in She Bop. This song created some outrage back in the 80's. Look up the reason. Maybe that's why the song has a nice rhythmic beat and sound. Girls just to have some fun indeed! Liked Money Changes Everything, All Through The Night and the song the quickly became a favorite was I'll Kiss You. Call me crazy, but I found myself enjoying this way more than I thought. I can see how the voice could be a little bothersome, but it beats having to listen to Dylan. I'm thinking a 3.5 for me. Because of Tim After Time and Prince, will round up to 4 3.5
3 “I like your sleeves. They’re real big.” I wasn’t really sure what to expect with this one, but it’s surprisingly enjoyable. Granted, it also very much feels like a product of its time, but I think you would have to be the wettest of wet blankets to not have at least a little bit of fun with this. You really can’t go wrong with the first four tracks in particular, with Money Changes Everything and When You Were Mine being the two surprises here for me. Both are incredibly fun, energetic, and catchy, with the latter also being a great take on Prince. To be honest, I’m actually more familiar with the song in the form of the later Bright Eyes cover (forgive me), but after listening to this album, I gotta say, I think Cyndi did it best. And then you have the two mega-hits, Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time, which are also both mostly enjoyable, though I gotta say, Girls has been overplayed to death (it’s also a bit cheesy), and I can’t hear Time without thinking of Napoleon Dynamite (see opening quote). As for the rest of this album - pretty standard 80s fare. Don’t have much else to say about it, though dialing in on and re-evaluating the lyrics of She Bop was interesting after learning about the controversy surrounding it. Is it sexist that this song was scorned and Dancing With Myself wasn’t? Probably, it was the 80s ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also, I kind of dug the ragtime segue He’s So Unusual, which is apparently a cover of an old Betty Boop song - it’s a cute way to set up the closing of the album. Nothing spectacular, and there’s nothing I’m immediately jumping to save on Spotify, but it’s for sure a fun slice of the era.

Some big cuts from Cyndi. This album came out during my college years, and took the radio world by the tail. Girls Just Wanna is still played with some regularity today. I thought it was a pretty stupid song in the day, but it is a catchy little beat in its simplicity. While I recognize the big hits here, I never listened to the whole album until today, and I was surprised to discover…. Her voice sucks! WTF? By today’s Pop standard, she’d be a YouTube curiosity at best. I’m glad she had her success in the 80’s, when shit music was the standard, and I hope royalties keep rolling in until her last squeak.

Definitely an interesting album and not the easiest to rate. There are some absolute bangers on here, Girls Just Want to have fun and Time After Time are true classics. There are also some filler songs, and the albums only 40 minutes long. Overall though I enjoyed it and will rate it so. Not sure if this is one that I will actively pursue for myself but it's good and hearing the music is worth it.

Fantastic album! Her vocals are charismatic and powerful. So many of these songs are hits and even the non-hits are still great. This is probably the best 80’s pop album, and I’d listen to this album any day. 4.6 stars

Pop perfection. “Time After Time” is a classic. Super strong vocals throughout. Some surprising moments (“Yeah Yeah”).
Song after song of iconic 80s pop. Hard to go wrong with it. I only don't give it a 5 because I couldn't see myself putting this on ever again. Although I am impressed and it was a joy to listen through.

The singles are pure 80s nostalgia, but the other tracks realllly do not hold up very well.
i never liked cyndi lauper growing up, which is very weird (or unusual, one may say ((hehe haha i am so funny)) ) because her whole brand is something that i usually would be obsessed with. my dad, on the other hand, is a huge fan of her music and would play it all the time. i would get annoyed every time i'd hear her raspy voice, finding her to be extremely obnoxious. i saw that this album had been generated for me and i was immediately dreading pulling it up. now, i actually realize why this woman is so successful. when "money changes everything" came on, something just clicked. this album is just banger after banger! she is differnet. she wasn't afraid to do something unique and truly be her authentic and unapologetic self. she makes creative and feel good music that is necessary for society. it seems everyone today is so angsty and negative about everything, which is understandable considering the current state of it all, but you can't live your life in a constant state of pessimism. you're just doing harm to yourself and everybody aroud you. every time i turn on the radio, everything is so broody and aggressive and vulgar, it ruins the vibes!!!!!!! can people just be creative? all these people are trying to be something they're not and it's slowly morphing all of us into one. we are all individuals! we should take after cyndi lauper and learn to be OURSELVES. this has honestly just turned into one huge ramble, but whatever if anybody actually ends up reading this they get to witness a 17 year old girl going kinda crazy while procrastinating on their homework. i will say one more thing though. my friend and i were talking to our french teacher a couple weeks ago about fashion and music, and she told us that when she was in high school, people all dressed differently. people had their own styles and were innovative while trying to look cute on a budget. she told us that now she never sees anyone who actually looks unique anymore and that she can't tell who we are through how we dress anymore. that last part just stuck with me. you cannot tell who a person is and their interests just by their outfit anymore, and it sucks! i've made it my goal to dress as "me" as possible every time i go out now. anyways this album is actually amazing and i think it's one of my favourite records ever now.
Surprisingly good album. The musicianship is much better than you might expect as it's overshadowed by the fame of Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Wonderful voice, interesting, a bit different, but good. Time After Time is an amazing love song, so much better than many dull expressions of so-called love by artists such as, say, Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston - not to mention more bubblegum stuff. You can tell Cyndi came up the hard way, battling for her success. Interesting and strong songs on this one. Marred by the production values of its time.
The hits are so good particularly Time After Time and Through The Night. 2 of the finest pop songs of the 80's if I do day so myself. She Bop is also good but I don't like it as much as those 2. The non-singles are solid too. Just an overall enjoyable album.
Girls just wanna have fun remains one of the best song such a formative song of my childhood, started off ready to give it 5/5 after the first few songs however it did dip for me a bit (didn’t love She Bop) and then the second half fell a bit flat for me, but overall I can appreciate it’s an awesome album full of insane vocals and infectious zingy infectious music so still have to give it a 4/5

I read someone’s comment or an article somewhere that said “Cyndi Lauper should have had the career that Madonna had” and I think about that when I hear some of her songs. I’ve always love Girls Just Want to Have Fun. I don’t care that I’m a dude. I certainly love it more now that I’m a girl dad of two. It’s a truly fantastic pop song, one of the best of the 80’s. Time After Time isn’t far behind either, what a great song. My biggest takeaway from listening to her debut this time is how great of an opener Money Changes Everything is. What a banger! I love the Carsesque lead over the Mellencampesque guitar and rhythm section. Cyndi could siiing too (watch the We Are The World documentary on Netflix for a demonstration, or just listen to this). I get very excited when I hear these songs and it’s interesting throughout. I see no reason to drop any stars.
A whole album of Lauper is far too much Lauper.
Big hair, big shoulders, big produced MTV videos, big synths all the hallmarks of the flamboyant 80’s. At the time it was all good but looking back everything was a bit naff. My ex-wife liked Cyndi Lauper and even styled her hair like her but I won’tlet this cloud my judgement. In fact it was refreshing to play some of her songs again and there are one or two tracks on here which symbolise 80’s music and remind me how rubbish a lot of 80’s pop songs were. I do not like Cyndi’s tinny voice and the weak and thin production of the album only highlight her vocal limitations. Time After Time is the best song on here and one I really like. I wonder if it has ever been covered by someone with a stronger voice? Probably has, but I can’t really be bothered to find out. Which is my attitude to the whole album. Whilst it revives memories of that time, some good some bad, it firmly belongs in that time and should rarely be exposed. 1.999/5 (Time After Time makes it a 2) 7/4/24
I've always considered "Time After Time" one of my favorite songs of all time. Oddly I'd never thought to listen to the album it was on. Of course some of the songs were very familiar to me, having been alive in the late 80s...albeit very young. I have to add that I appreciated the synthesizer sounds this album puts out, they felt magical here and there, like they do.

She may have been so unusual at the time, but Cyndi Lauper became the archetype of the 1980s American girl. It wasn’t just that she wanted to have fun - she wanted to break away from the stereotypes and constraints put on women in American culture.
I have been so disappointed by the Madonna albums on this list since I only knew the hits, but even only knowing the hits from this Cyndi Lauper album, this album is everything I want and expect from an 80s pop icon. Cyndi should have been bigger and Madonna doesn't deserve her rep, at least not based on the albums on this list.

The front half of this album was a 5. The back half of this album gets a 1. Cyndi has a unique voice, and when it works it works. And when it doesn’t she sounds like a fucking giggle stick. Or a groan tube. Whatever it’s called. Also minus points because the transition in He’s So Unusual almost made me crash my car.
Cindy Lauper rocks. Listened to this one a hundred times or more. Easily one of the greatest pop albums of all time, no notes.

This is a delightful album - its bursting with positive energy, and really encapsulates an era where women were realising and fighting for their full potential. Despite that it's not preachy or in-your-face. I was going to say that some of these songs gave me Bjork vibes and that Cyndi ran so Bjork could walk. But I don't think that pitting women against each other is in the spirit of this album

It's 'ok'
Solid debut album with some real classics. Her voice always boarders on annoying, but it also pulls me in a bit at the same time. Not sure what else to say about it.
1st listen thoughts: First 6 songs are great, second half of the album isn't as good. Really like the synths and the 80s sound. Very good album, tied with Elliot Smith for my favorite so far. Listened 3 times like it more each time. Her voice is very unique, the album cover is great, production is really good. Classic! Never really gave any recognition to Cyndi but after this I can appreciate that this is a pretty decent album. The album cover suits the music so well

good songs, i find the popular songs a bit annoying at this point because i hear them literally all the time but there’s no denying they’re good songs, album was okay overall, 6/10
Wow, this goes harder than I expected. For 80s pop this is really ahead of its time, it's nowhere near as cheesy and annoying as a lot of the other pop music from this era. Her lyrics are inventive, break gender stereotypes, and all sorts of less conventional instruments make really tasteful appearences at some points. Some moments are still a bit too bubblegum pop for my liking, but they are few and far between, and barely take away from the listening experience.

The lead single from this album gets on every last nerve. This came out when I was in 7th and I didn’t like it then and I don’t like it now. Money Changes Everything is the best song from this album. I thought she had written all these songs - only a partial credit on some.
I was not expecting to know as many songs as I did on this. Truly a great record packed with hits from the 80s.
Cyndi Lauper is amazing. What a great album. Great record cover too. Gets a bit silly towards the end, but there's plenty of bangers up front!

I was 12 years old when this album came out, and I recall that I had a 45 of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" that got a lot of play in my house. Never got around to hearing the whole album, although it's so packed with hits that I almost feel like I have. These songs were all over the place for the next couple of years and Cyndi Lauper was an MTV darling. Listening to it today, I'm struck at how strong most of the singles are. It's a nice mix of the heartfelt and the wacky that fit right into the landscape of early 80s pop and new wave. The arrangements are bright and catchy and Lauper has a lovely voice, when she cares to be serious with it. The affected baby voice and other silly touches that appear on some of these songs plant the album squarely in its time and aren't particularly fun to listen to now. The songwriting is of course all over the map, coming from a hodgepodge of songwriters. Lauper's own songwriting collaborations are a mixed bag, ranging from the marvelous "Time After Time" to the straight up bad "I'll Kiss You." Side 1 is definitely where the best songs reside, and side 2 starts off strong. But the quality slides quickly after "All Through the Night" and never recovers.
