This is an incredible album with so much character. Being a virtual band allowed a unique theme to shine through with lyrics reflecting the world that they live in while still sharing common themes that resonate in real life. Truly a joy to listen to every time.

A good album when you're feeling like zoning out. The bass and certain drum breaks really stand out, making every trip hop song in this album "heavier" in a good way, however, it's not something I would listen to everyday. Tracks i'd keep in my playlist: 1-3-5-8-9-10-11-12-14
Confusing genre definition, swaps between grunge, rock, lofi, hiphop, rap. 19-2000 and Clint Eastwood are clearly written as hits and disrupt the flow of the album. Repetitive melodies within the songs.

The album was as repetitive as my points about it bein repetitive. Around halfway through, I could not be bothered listening to the songs all the way through, but I did, I knew what was to come. There was only a few songs from the album that I actually liked. I am a huge Gorillaz fan, but this is not their best album and I suppose it's on the list because of songs like "Clint Eastwood" which became a classic. I've always found this album lacking cohesion and too long. That said, some of the songs that tend to get stuck in my head would probably be the first to be cut if this was a tighter album, like "Double Bass" "M1 A1" "Sound Check" and "Left Hand Suzuki Method" (which must be only on the US release?). The album starts super strong with "Re-Hash" "5/4" and "Tomorrow Comes Today" but just doesn't keep up the momentum throughout. A good collection of songs, and a significant band, but not a great front-to-back album.
Certainly is a cartoonish postmodern hodgepodge. Never really got the "virtual band" thing - found it kind of gimmicky - but there are some cool tunes buried within the excessive CD era runtime.
Hard to rate. Enjoyment overall is a 3 but some songs are bangers for sure, this was huuuge (as well as the next album in their roster). The album as a whole is not cohesive though, but it's pretty close to a 4. The edgy kids loved Gorillaz. I wasn't cool enough.

Don't think I ever appreciated how much of an absolute vibe this album is. And I mean that seriously, like the cultivation of an entirely engrossing mood and aesthetic while traversing multiple genres. It just drips with style and is endlessly listenable. This was a big Dad put it on when I was little album as well, but this was probably the first time I gave it a proper first listen and the production is an absolute treat. No problem saying this is my favourite Gorillaz album and probably one of my favourite albums all told. Four and a half. Fave track: M1 A1 (freaked me out so much as a kid that I had to skip the intro on my ipod nano)
This one brought me way back to being a little kid again and my brother playing me the music he was into. Though the songwriting, production, and features continued to grow and shine more as the albums went on, this is still a damn solid debut. Slick and quirky, with some delicious verses from Del. Light four for this one. Fave track: 19-2000
I've heard of Gorillaz, but didn't know any of their songs. It was OK. Maybe back then it was revolutionary? Some of the songs can be quite repetitive and sound synthetic.

This is my second time listening to a full album from this band and hopefully the last. They have some good singles but their albums are impossible to sit through. *In my opinion*, heavily overrated.
I like this album, but its inclusion on this list is a bit of a mystery to me. It’s not even the second best Gorillaz album.
never listened all the through before, the most Blur-like Gorillaz album. But that's a pretty cool thin, just some of the songs were pretty irritating to listen to on a stressful work day, but that's also my fault
I think this band is a little overrated. There is a lot of cleverness but then given the artists involved that's no surprise, but it's kind of a shallow dish.
There is a copy of this on vinyl in my living room. An excellent example of the genre. Put it on. Chill.
Clint Eastwood. C’mon.
I only knew "Clint Eastwood" and even that sounded better than I remembered. Anyway, while I am aware of the cultural status that this record has, I wasn't really old enough to appreciate it as I was in kindergarten at the time. So I was going into this with pretty fresh ears. While the album started dragging a little towards the end, I did enjoy the overall groove.

I never got the hype around this band and I still don't. I avoided it when I was younger because "Clint Eastwood" was overplayed and didn't do anything for me and now that I've listened to the whole thing, I feel like that was still the right decision. It's pretty much Blur with some rap sprinkled throughout and just boring. Not my thing and I don't get what grabs people. 2/5

A dabblers compilation of dub murk and uncommitted guests that has interesting sounds circling void: this has a lackadaisical, fix it in the studio character wrapped in Jamie Hewlett’s cheeky pop art, which never betrays any underlying purpose, manifesto or feeling.
I expected the worst, but: fuck me, this is *terrible*

Only knew a few tracks off this album, so giving it a complete listen was tons of fun. Absolutely solid, great songs all the way through, and a unique, cohesive sound.

This album blew me away when it first came out, and it holds up. Blur was all well and good, but Gorillaz allowed Damon Albarn to stretch his creative wings, and it never hurts to have Del the Funky Homosapien on the roster. "Clint Eastwood" is the track most people will recognize, but "Rock the House" is my favorite of the bunch; I love the '70s game show vibe, and the track prominently features Del, so what's not to love? Giving this 4 stars, but it's closer to 4.5, I think.
Fantastic. Some of this still sounds fresh today, and I enjoyed the trip down memory lane with their classics. I particularly enjoyed the ambient tracks. Well done. 4.5 stars.

3.5/.5. This was good, although not quite my style. I have not really listened to Gorillaz at all, so this was a good introduction.
Remember this being released. Very experimental sounds and there are pockets of brilliance on here. I just love the shoe-gazing melancholic lazy grooves and so many interesting sound loops. Stand out tracks for me are ‘Tomorrow Comes Today’, ‘Slow Country’ and ‘19-2000’ Sadly, Damon Albarn has spoilt quite a few of the tracks with some really strange vocal weirdness, and there are too many fillers to stop me scoring higher than a 3. The second album ‘Demon Days’ built on this sound and delivered so much more.
A big fan of Blur and Albarn in general, but at the time of release, I didn't get the virtual band stuff. It's a Damon side project, it didn't need all the cartoon characters. That said, maybe it needed all that bullshit to sell it, as it is a bit boring in many places. The concept of mixing genres didn't seem to work very well in this case, certainly worked better on subsequent releases. Quite liked Man Research, 19-2000 (but even that isn't the single mix on the original album, that was added to the end of the album like some sort of extra which oddly is the standout track by a mile). Albarn finding life after Blur (at the time) a bit tough or self indulgent? - a high 1.
This one takes me back! I fell in love with Gorillaz in my teens. The upcoming 2 albums were great as well. A cool mix of hip hop meets pop meets synths, great collaborations which only became more in the present (too many if you ask me). I’m sad to see what Gorillaz has grown into, but those first 3 records are still spun on frequent basis! 8,5 out of 10
Fucking great. Love their sound, feel like it was pretty ground breaking at the time (2001), but I'm not sure. Definitely some bangers in there (Clint Eastwood), and some good variety. I need to give it a few more listens to really get a feel for it. But I just love their sound, aesthetic.
While not my favourite Gorillaz album by any stretch, it's getting a 5 for the sheer originality, inventiveness and sheer number of great tracks here. The trip-hop stylings are right up my street, especially in this 90s/early 2000s era, the music videos were incredible, and there's so much different stuff here. I don't love everything, but as a package I can't dismiss it. It has a slightly uneasy atmosphere, an accurate cynicism about the coming decade, an album for the start of autumn. DD and PB are still better though. 28/07/23
A messy album. Feels like Damon trying to show he can do, or likes, lots of different styles. So there's the punk one, called, er, Punk. This was pleasant enough and some of the beats were fun but it didn't flow as an album and I didn't really get anything from any of the lyrics. Too abstract for me. And the 'refix' of Clint Eastwood - which I don't think was on the original album - is by far the most focused and interesting track here.
I can't listen to this without being reminded of early 2000 bars in Clapham that cornered the market for the boozer / club crossover. I was resentful at the time for Damon dissing his indie roots and going for the dance market. I was probably resentful at my own personal transition at the time. Almost a quarter of a Century (!) later and I now get it. Club culture over indie shite any day. This is dark, yet it leaves you with pockets of optimism in which to escape. It all comes back to the tune, something which Damon has always had. Wankerville is still Wankerville, mind.
Close to a 5 for the originality and uniqueness of the tunes, highlighted in Latin Simone, Sound check, Client Eastwood (both versions). etc.

Very eclectic. Blur frontman’s anything goes multimedia project - unleashing the shackles of anyone telling Damon what he can and can’t do. Mostly hip-hop beats, but a bit of almost anything added to electronica and alt-rock and even some Latin. Comparable to Beck with clearer singing. Half is good. The singles definitely work well. History shows the project was a success. So I’ll round up to Four for genuine fashion and cultural influence and chart busting hits.

It's hard to pinpoint the sound of the band; it just sounds like generic 2000s stuff. It doesn't help that the genres of the songs switch completely from alternative to a mix of pop and hip-hop. I guess the virtual band aspect was innovative at the time, but it does not make the music itself any different. Also, the lyrics are weird; I don't understand what any of the songs are about.
I didn’t like this when it first came out. I haven’t tried listening to the whole album in probably close to 20 years so I’m interested to see how I like it now… Post-listening: still not my jam.

When this album came out there was a flash game where you drove the jeep from the cover around on a 3d map while 19-2000 played on loop; it was pretty cool for what it was, but was glitchy as hell. I wonder if there's a way to play it anymore - probably not.
Um. This isn't a bad record, there are interesting things here and there, and it has some elements that are musically cool. That said, it makes me think of a quote from a friend of mine -- "the Black Eyed Peas are the sort of musical act you think about creating with your friends when you are nine" -- Gorillaz are basically that sort of thing, somewhat updated, less dance oriented, more of a trip hop sort of feel in places. I don't understand why this album is on this list and Digable Planets "Refutation" isn't -- hell, I'd take Beastie Boys "Check Your Head" or "Hello Nasty" over this, even with several BB albums on the list already. (I discovered later that this seems to have been removed from more recent editions of the list LOL)
Classic early-noughties’ record whose best feature is the level of music contamination and genre-bending. Most importantly, it is fun AF. It does not get more than a 4/5 because the concept of ‘Gorillaz’ as a band still felt a little gimmicky and the album never reaches the peaks of ‘Demon Days’. I enjoyed some of the sounds, and I feel this album kind of designated their signature sound, which I happen to enjoy. Very trial and error, but the next couple of albums make this one pay off. Good, but not great. Great starting spot for them.
Nice grooves, relaxed Lo-Fi production but all the tracks are a bit the same, and there isn't a lot of rhythmic, melodic, or harmonic development.

You know what? Was not into it this time I listened to it! Most of it just seemed aimless except for a couple tracks (Clint Eastwood, 19-2000). I’m also very surprised to see that Demon Days is not on this list. I feel like that album was more popular at the time. Plus in the last couple of years everyone has rightfully evevated it to masterpiece status.
Yes! I was waiting for some Gorillaz to appear here. Though to be honest, their self-titled debut is one I don't really know all that much about. I only really knew the "mainstream" songs here I guess. It meant there were a few songs I didn't really know, and a few others that are absolutely dripping with nostalgia for my early 00s upbringing here in the UK. Here was this band, really quite different and subversive to anything else getting airtime, this blending of Hip-Hop and Rock but not in a Limp Bizkit sort of way. Then seeing a Gorillaz video on VH1 or MTV or whatever it was playing on the old Sky Digibox and seeing it was all a cartoon band? There was also the memories of finding the Geep Simulator game on AddictingGames and playing the hell out of that, partly for the cool 3D Flash gameplay and also to listen to 19-2000. I don't remember if I ever went to the OG Gorillaz website or not but I think I would have enjoyed it a lot. Then of course, there was the Ed Case and Sweetie Irie refix of Clint Eastwood, an absolute 2-step juggernaut that seemingly took the UK dancefloors by storm in the early 2000s. Though I don't know for sure, I was just a kid, but the amount of airtime that thing got on Radio 1 back in the day makes me believe it. This is like a time capsule of scattered and slightly hazy memories of my early childhood, and I certainly have a new appreciation for it nowadays. However I didn't really feel like I was missing out with the songs on here I didn't recognise, I still have my favourites. Generally I also think it's not my favourite Gorillaz album, I think Demon Days is just way too good, and I even enjoy a lot of their more recent stuff. With all that being said, I realised there's a lot of Gorillaz' back catalogue that I've not really listened to yet, as well as their whole fictional universe that I need to attempt to wrap my head around. I think I know what I'm going to do when I get a few days free! Either way, this was a very strong debut album of the revolutionary, rebellious and ridiculously creative project from Albarn and Hewlett that went on to become the most successful virtual band ever, gaining a much wider universal following than Blur ever managed. Gorillaz pushed the boundaries of what a band was, and its influence on music going into the new millenium cannot be understated. Or maybe that's just the nostalgia talking, but that's how I see it anyway. Favourite: Clint Eastwood

entertaining mix of rock, rap, and pop over various music samples. was only familiar with “clint eastwood” before this listen. liked it more than i thought i would. highlights: “clint eastwood”, “punk”, “19-2000”.
This was a bit of a different one. The first two songs were not good. The third one was pretty good. There was a song that sounded like Elmo sing it. There was a song that they hired a fifth grader with his recorder to play in. Some of the stuff was pretty good, a lot of it was not. Strange.
I be just don’t really like this. Some good beats but it’s just drones on mostly.

I heard Gorlillaz not too long after the album was released, and have been a fan of the band since the beginning. My introduction to the band was their video for "19-2000" and I thought the remix was catchy and it got me curious. I like Blur, so additional work from Damon Albarn was intriguing. It's been a while since I've listened to the full album, but many of the tracks are in my regular rotation. "Clint Eastwood" and "19-2000" are probably my top favorites, but it was good to get reminded about "Re-Hash", "Tomorrow Comes Today", "5/4", and "Rock the House". I don't like everything from Gorillaz, but I will probably always be ready to hear any new music they put out to find my new favorites.
I've always liked Gorillaz, but never loved them. I've followed them since this premiere and I love some stuff, like a bit more, and really don't dig some of it. They have been a seasoning in my music library for 20+ years. It was really refreshing to listen to this album I haven't played in a long while. I think I liked it more now than when it was new. Every track felt fresh and I have no complaints.

eu sempre ouvi falar muito bem de gorillaz, mas nunca pensei que era bom mesmo. se eu me esforçasse mais pra ouvir, podia ser uma porta pra hip hop pra mim, mas eu não tenho vontade ainda de explorar esse genero. como falei, hip hop não é meu negocio, mesmo nesse caso que tem alta influencia de rock. além disso, eu não simpatizo com a ideia de serem personagens 2d ficticios, por mais foda e inovadora que tenha sido na epoca e honestamente ate hoje em dia.
I was really really expecting to enjoy this a lot, a few tracks in it felt like looking after a toddler who was trying to get my attention. Could just be that I wasn't in the mood at the time.
I love this album but I think that is fueled by nostalgia.

For what seems to be a rock experimental album I enjoyed lots of the sounds that were produced throughout. The lyrics seem to not have much significance other then displaying vocal ranges as instruments of their own. Reminds me a little bit of Nirvana in the lyricism or lack there of. Overall, the album feels like interesting and digestible background noise that is reminiscent of the early 2000's. Fun Note: Released on the first day on the new century Jan. 1 2001

Wow, really surprised I didn't like this one. Have pretty fond memories of the Gorillaz though that is more from cultural osmosis than anything and have never actually sat down to listen to a full album of theirs before. Pretty rambling and samey to my ears, though if anyone disagrees I fully back your dismissal of my opinion.
I think in the context of just listening to an album of music, the idea of a virtual band gets a little lost. But it certainly adds to the story. I appreciate that Damon Albarn really has taken his art in so many places in so many ways. I don't always love it, but that's maybe not the point here. He's not one for the tried and true. So this scores higher in "let's try some interesting things" than in "I can't wait to listen again!"
Another band on the 1001 that I have had a curiosity about but had failed to take the initiative to explore. Well, I really dug this album for sure.
Hmmm. I was excited to listen to this. I love Feel Good Inc. and Dare from Demon Days but maybe the fact that I never listened to that album more than once should've been a clue as to how I'd feel about this. With a lot of these songs, I felt like the musicians just weren't that interested in making music, which makes sense to me after reading about its inspiration being the soullessness of pop music. A lot of this did feel soulless. Which is an interesting thing to try, I guess? But it obviously makes it hard to connect with.
I haven’t really listened to Gorillaz before. I think I had the idea that this was some kind of joke since it was a virtual cartoon band. I was surprised to see this as something I should hear before I die. Turns out that I enjoyed this album a lot, and nothing about the music would have tipped me off that there was anything virtual about the group had I not already known this. I had grown up hearing “Sugar Sugar” by The Archies and didn’t realize the association to the comic book until I was in my teens. I fell in love with this, more and more with every listen. I’ll be checking out more from Gorillaz.

There were a lot of cool ideas and production effects going on throughout this one but they all seemed very rough which makes sense cuz it’s his first attempt at writing songs in these styles. Giving it a 3 for that cuz I didn’t really love the album but I appreciate him trying to push the boundaries on the debut album. Hopefully any more gorillaz we get will be a little more cohesive with better songwriting. 👍: tomorrow comes today, 5/4
Man, what a disappointment. I’ve always said I like the Gorillaz…I guess I just meant plastic beach. I understand, or at least I want to tell myself, that they were experimenting. Trying to find their sound. But man a lot of these tracks fell flat and were almost annoyingly bad. Some tracks along the middle pick up, the synth in Double bass is pretty groovy. Man I don’t want to hate this thing.

Has the feel of a lark ... and, however fun and clever, larks shouldn't go on this long. There are cool grooves and beats and hooks, but somehow nets out as slightly less than the sum of its parts. Doesn't improve on multiple listens and has the same problem as much of Blur, way too convinced of its own cleverness, despite being, in fact, quite clever indeed. The beats are cool, the spooky edge and shadowy atmospherics add a bit, too, and the versatility is both feature (fun) and bug (all over the bloody place, which adds to the not-to-be-taken-too-seriously effect).

Beetje lastig het genre te omschrijven, een soort blije Britse hiphop. Interessant ook om even op wiki te checken hoe deze figuren eruit zien (een soort Mangamannetjes). Naja, vrolijke deuntjes en er staat zowaar een hitje op, het kon slechter.
De makers van dit album weten precies hoe ze de aandacht moeten trekken. Ze stoppen al hun energie en creativiteit in die beeldvormende elementen. Muzikaal komt er op de juiste momenten een leuke muzikale vinding voorbij. Daarmee bereiken zij de klant. De elementen die minder snel het primaire gevoel beroeren krijgen weinig aandacht. Zonde van de energie blijkbaar. De hit als voorbeeld. Het refrein is enorm sterk: origineel en toch pakkend. Dat refrein kent iedereen en wordt lekker mee-geneuried. Dat daarom heen een slap-uitgevoerde rap zit op een saaie muzikale basis maakt dan niet meer uit.
Elektro-blur, waarbij de beste nummers incl een hippe rapper zijn. Ik denk dat dit album met name vernieuwend was op de manier waarop muziek met kunst werd gemixt. Hippe street-art cartoons, een soort van niet-bestaande band eromheen. De hele package heeft een bepaalde stijl. En dat werkte heel goed. Als je puur sec naar de muziek kijkt, vind ik het persoonlijk allemaal wat mager. Het was de hele beleving en marketing erbij, die dit groter maakte dan het in werkelijkheid is. De hitjes zijn leuk, maar de opvulling is net zo wazig als een soort moderne 80s wave.
This seemed like a gimmick at first, but then I couldn't stop listening to this record when it came out. Not their best album, but maybe their catchiest.

The album which really introduced this group to a mainstream audience. I remember buying it in a FNAC in France along with Daft Punk's Discovery and All Killer No Filler by Sum 41! What a summer of music listening that was. Some great bops on this album and some long-lasting earworms. Some equally forgettable B-side tunes. But it was a fun concept back when the idea of media-crossover music projects had regained some novelty, and the way it was pulled off was really clever with oodles of mystique and a slick PR campaign aided by the then-mainstream music outlets. Very hip and cool to be a Gorillaz fan.
Does it count as experimental? It is to me anyway. Couple of really great tracks.

Back when Gorillaz was fun and fresh, as patchy and a little uneven this debut album is sometimes. Damon Albarn, here helped by Dan The Automator, sure had a great "concept" with this idea of a virtual band. And some of the tracks slap, "Clint Eastwood" being for instance an all-time great. The thing is, other cuts on this record sound a little too gimmicky, and some of the electronic elements or rappings displayed haven't aged that well. Tempted to include the album nonetheless, since it documents the zeigeist of the early naughts in ways most other LPs then released don't. Maybe the naughts don't deserve to be so well documented anyway. You tell me... It was a time when music went through such a constant "Re-hash" (wink-wink) that you sometimes had the feeling the best of it was behind. Fortunately, it wasn't, because things then got better--listen to a lot of the great albums released these days... But that's a story for another time, kiddies. Re-Hash - Fun, repetitive but not to the point of annoyance. 5/4 - Wacky, I like the hook and record scratches Tomorrow Comes Today - Melancholic and mellow, childhood favorite, I love it a lot. New Genius (Brother) - Great vibes, harmonica and background vocals add quite a bit. Clint Eastwood - Simple but effective, humorously deadpan vocals from 2D & fun rap vocals from Del. Man Research (Clapper) - Meh. Punk - Decent punk track. Sound Check (Gravity) - I like the bass and kicks. Double Bass - Goofy synths and organ, like it. Rock the House - Great flow from Del and the hilarious recorder melodies. Love it. 19-2000 - Lovely track. appropriately tacky with summer vibes. Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo) - Definitely stands out, pretty good trumpet and harmonica melodies. Starshine - Lonely-and spacious crispy track. Like it a lot. Slow Country - Chiptune sounds good, the sound is larger than on most tracks. Enjoyable M1 A1 - Good garage-y & explosive finisher. Nice buildup too. Overall a good album, has some classics, but also a few mediocre cuts.

Hey, I was just talking about these "guys" with my Blur review! I much prefer this project to that one, but I never really gave their first outing a fair shake, much preferring the 2nd and 3rd proper LPs. Those aren't on the list, though, so... this one was pretty alright, although I thought I'd be more confident in the four star I'm giving this. Obviously very enjoyable, but you can tell there were times when they were like "what if we did a song with this?" and never expanded it past that. That certainly has its place, but it can feel aimless here. Still, the stuff that is good is really good, just wish this isn't all those new to Gorillaz had to work with on this Generator, as this certainly isn't their best work in almost any aspect, save for a representative one or two songs most people already know any way. Man, I sounded way more negative in this review than I really thought. Basically, Gorillaz good.

I like this album quite a bit - some awesome tracks, especially the ones with Del (Clint Eastwood, Rock The House). M1 A1 might be more of a Blur song, but I really like it. Dropping a star because of Man Research, that track was annoying.
I wish I’d thought of the idea to make a cartoon band. This album is perfect for falling in and out of a feverish dream, not really knowing what’s real and what’s not. (I listened to this album while having serious migraine issues) I was today years old when I found out that the Blur lead man was the creator of Gorillaz. Turns out he’s some sort of (new) genius. I love the creativity here. They’re laying the groundwork for their more refined sound in future years. This record is very exploratory with a new sound that doesn’t fit into any particular genre. Rather than re-hashing the same old riffs we’ve heard before, this has a different vibe and different delivery. And that earns pointz from me. However, when experimenting there are always a few duds and this album has some of those. So it’s not perfect, as not every song rocked the house. But overall, I was always looking forward to what was coming next, which is all you can ask for in an album. My sneaky favourite on the record was Sound Check but 19-2000 is a beauty. I always wanted a cool shoeshine.
This album just sort of runs out of steam. As I jog my memory listening to snippets of the various tracks, a lot of them really are quite decent, and a few really good ones like Re-Hash and Clint Eastwood. Through the second half of the album the density of weaker tracks just gets high enough to lose my attention. From the boring Slow Country and Starshine to the straight up irritating 19-2000. I want to make special mention of the song 5/4, which is a pretty good attempt at writing in the awkward time signature, but loses points for the lazy and self-congratulatory title. I was initially leaning towards a 2 on this one based on my impression from full album listens, but listening to individual tracks reveals some more quality here than that impression. This album is less than the sum of its parts.
I liked this album. If you factor in the virtual band concept I would give the album 4 stars, because I think that’s a big part of what makes the Gorillaz cool.

Loved this. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to the record straight down. Ibrahim ferrar is awesome on Latin Simone. His record with buena vista social club is great. Really sick and interesting beats. 19-2000 was a blast from the past, hadn’t heard that song in forever. Apparently the Clint Eastwood beat is just a stock preset from the Omni chord 😂

Clint Eastwood and 19/2000 are classic standouts. The rest are interesting jams with a lot of instrumentals over various styles of music blended into a unique Gorillaz sound. Pretty interesting blend of genres which is pretty ahead of its time.
Never really got this stuff, too popular whilst also being too hipster
I've grown to like Gorillaz a lot more in the past few years, and while their debut is not my favorite, it shows a lot of promise for the group. Damon is clearly excited to focus his energy in a different direction than Blur allowed him to. There's a lot of fun stuff, but I believe that Albarn learns a lot between this album and his next few works. It's really only a 3.5 star to me, but I'm gonna bump this one up.

The question I have to ask myself is, am I too old to relate to this music in any way? The answer is probably yes. On first listen (and most likely only) it seems like the album tries so hard to bounce between musical genres it doesn't land in any. What will Apple Music say, "You may also like", after I listen to this? - 2 stars
Not really bad. But certainly not great. Maybe good. This is extremely average. I kept waiting for one great song or something cool to happen. I'm still waiting. Lots of weird spacey sounds mixed in though. Good album cover I guess.
I know who the Gorillaz are but I had never heard this album before. First couple songs were a little too repetitive for me. Clint Eastwood is obvious standout. And yeah the rest of the album is just not for me. However I will give an extra star for the music video for Clint Eastwood. If you haven’t seen it I would recommend giving it a watch.

Good, unique mix of lofi, rap, and rock. Definitely good music to put on on a rainy day and just have playing in the background. I enjoyed the songs with lyrics best, namely Rock the House (with the Herb Alpert-esque brass), Clint Eastwood, and Tomorrow Comes Today. Nothing super profound jumped out at me, but definitely a good debut.

Some good songs but like half of it could have been cut at least and it would have made for a better project. That's how I feel about Gorillaz in general, too much dicking around with some real songs thrown in every once in a while.

My Gorillaz experience growing up was Feel Good Inc and Clint Eastwood. The rest of the album was fine enough to listen to but there’s probably a reason nothing else they did was a commercial success.

It was when this came out, or maybe the second Gorillaz album, that I realised I'd got the Britpop wars all wrong and Damon is the genius from that era. I think you only get to extend a career by taking on new influences and trying new things, and this is a great example. Better than any Blur album with some great songs and still a great listen.

I remember when I first heard Clint Eastwood and it blew me away! Definitely the highlight of the album but the rest is solid too. This is a tough one for me. It has enough to be a 4.5 for sure but was torn if I could round it up.

Apparently a new Gorillaz album came out two days ago? What the hell, where was I? Ah, Gorillaz. When I first listened to you, I didn't get you. I didn't like you. It took me, what, a decade for me to give you another chance? And man, am I glad I did. Gorillaz is one of those bands that I think hit for a lot of people in their teens, but that wasn't the case for me. I was musically stunted during my teens, and only remedied that several years later. The idea really shouldn't have worked. A virtual band? Who in their right mind would listen to that? As it turned out, a lot of people would, and for good reason. The music, just fundamentally, is catchy. Now, this isn't my favorite album by the band, 'Plastic Beach' holding that title, but you can't deny the sheer enjoyability of the music. The beats seem effortlessly catchy, the instrumentals mixed together in a super satisfying way and lyrics that sometimes seem weird, and sometimes seem profound. Depends on the mood and the song, I guess. Speaking of mood, I'm in a terrible one today that doesnt fit this album and it still hits. Impressive. Final thoughts: I guess I should go listen to that new Gorillaz album, maybe?

Обожаю этот дебютный альбом. Дальше гориллаз будут больше уходить в эксперименты + набирать популярность в фитах, но уже здесь чувствуется напор на флоу и любовь к электронщине вкупе с джазом (вот такая ассоциация, да) Если не слышали, то очень зря)
Ну, тут начинать можно как минимум с того, что группа сама по себе явление: не физическое воплощение, а аватары. Не помню вот только, первый это кейс или нет. Хацунэ Мику точно позже была. Ну и музыка конечно класс. Вот забавно, что Gorillaz стали для Дэймона Албарна такой вот отдушиной: пустился во все тяжкие с экспериментами вдали от флагманского брит-поп проекта. Альбом вгоняет в транс первыми песнями. Всё такое на расслабоне, в духе регги (а если быть душным - даба). Как будто реально трубку мира покурили хорошенько перед записью. Tomorrow Come Today - прям идеальный пример, подтверждающий этот тезис. Ещё и название такое, в соответствующем духе. Блин, я бы может и поставил оценку выше, но... я не люблю особо такую музыку. Не, иногда можно, но не постоянно. Альбом заслуживает внимания именно как альбом, хоть в нём и нет какого-то чётко сформулированного концепта. Может, если был бы - было бы ваще крышесносно. P.S. Не знаю, почему вдруг, но буквально недавно завирусился видос, что интро к Clint Eastwood - это просто стандартный пресет какого-то портативного синтезатора. Хотя факт вроде как баян. P.P.S. Блин, ребятыыыы, как же я обожаю такое, когда и все вроде знакомое, а целиком не слушал и вот это все вместе собирается и такая конфэта. Сразу говорю, что ставлю 4+1 за влияние. По восприятию мне было на том же уровне приятно (эмоционально другая приятность, конечно). They put out several several albums after this that I prefer but this is still really good. I remember seeing the Clint Eastwood video on MTV2 and being really intrigued. I'd definitely put Demon Days and Plastic Beach on this list over it, but I guess the impact of its release counts for something too. Cracker Island dropped the same day I got this. Interesting coincidence. More of a 4 star album but giving a 5 because I like the discography so much

Haven’t actually listened to it since about 2002 so I was chuffed when it popped up. For me this is Pokemon Blue on Gameboy, Phillips and Quinn on MOTD, six week’s holidays of blue sky and sun, a 20p pick and mix, Freddos that were 10p, jumpers for goalposts until it was too dark to see, knicky knocky 9 doors, Adam Sandler, New Labour, them tiny red spiders that lived on bricks, Kenan and Kel, not a care in the world. Probably, anyway, I’ve always been a worrier of some sort. Either way this is pure nostalgia AND it’s still mint. Double Bass was my top highlight, can’t remember it first time round but I’ve had it on repeat since
Another real hit and miss album, when Gorillzaz are good they are great but there's a lot of filler in here. Still enjoyed it overall, more like a 3.5.
Apart from Clint Eastwood, this seems like one long jam session. Not a lot of thought into the album, lots of bells and whistles, very little enjoyment.
I've enjoyed the odd Gorillaz song but not listened to a whole album before. Didn't really come away with a strong willingness to listen to any more of their albums. Too many of the tracks sound like a jam session. Highlights: Clint Eastwood Rock The House
Big meh..... Never really been into Gorrilaz. Obviously know the hits, but nothing else here really did anything for me. Wasn't bad, just not very interesting at all, which is perhaps the worst thing you can say about an album Del the funky homosapien has a good rap voice. M1-A1 was probably the best track

Great!! When this first came out I didn’t like the original version of Clint Eastwood but I was wrong the remix sucks. 19-2000 both versions are dope

Prepričana sem bila, da sem ta album v celoti že slišala, a temu v bistvu ni tako. Na trenutke me spominja na pozne Blurove albume, kar je logično. Mi je pa čudno, da je vključen na seznam ta album namesto Demon Days. Mogoče pa še pride pozneje?
Außer Clint Eastwood bleibt nichts hängen. Und der ist auch nur so mittelgut gealtert.
I like it I don’t love it but I like it
Aside from a couple hits, I didn’t love this album. Surprised me considering bc Demon Days is one of my all time faves. I think I like the more hip hop influences gorillaz that came later 3/5
