I couldn’t stand Gorillaz when they came out. I didn’t get it. Years later I still struggle to get it. Or at least this album. I love Blur and some of Gorillaz later work is really fascinating, but I feel like they are just discovering what they can do and they haven’t figured it out yet. This album is unbelievably repetitive and BORING!!! Give me variety. Clint Eastwood is the most entertaining song on this album and it’s the worst single they have ever had. So that says a lot. Woof. 2.5 stars.
Parts of this are almost kind of interesting. "Clint Eastwood" is close to being a banger. It's just too repetitive. It's like they knew when they had a good hook and needed to remind us many, many times. Bit of a slog, if I'm being honest. Highlights, I guess: Clint Eastwood, Double Bass
I dont like this as much as Blur who are apparently the same band?
Enjoyed a couple of songs but generally just not my vibe. Didn’t really draw me in. Feels like lots of sounds
Was excited to listen but ended up a bit short of my expectations. A couple of tracks I will go back to, but it might just be that i'm not that into Damon Albarn.
Had toch iets hogere verwachtingen 5,5/10 Highlights Clint Eastwood 19-2000 Soulchild Remix
Bit slow in places for me even though I like Damon Albans voice. Not my favourite .
Sleepy little album that won the lottery with a bunch of college kids who believed it was greatest ever.
Can tolerate one or two songs. Could do without a lot of the self indulgent Albarn vocals. Not an album I would choose to put on.
pas ouf
Lots of meh, some good parts. Standout songs: New Genius Soundcheck Double Bass
It is an okay album in some ways but not for me so 2 stars or D+.
eh 2 stars for me

bis auf die banger eigentlich lahm
A little soporific. Tries out some different sounds but does justice to few of them (though Latin Simone was a pleasant suprise).
Bit of a long slog that one, Gorillaz ain’t the animal Blur was
Liked it a lot less than I thought I would, first few songs are good, last few are too, & Clint Eastwood slaps. The instrumental stuff in between I did not like as much
really did not fuck with this which is such a shame cuz i know how beloved they are. Need to maybe give it another listen but i just felt like there was not a lot to the songs. He is a great songwriter in blur and i like gorillaz songs from other albums so idk wtf happened.
There’s a surprising amount here that doesn’t work. The rap songs are easily the strongest parts, so I guess it makes sense Gorillaz leaned into that later. Surprising to rate it this low. I actually really like Demon Days and Plastic Beach. But Gorillaz did not come out of the gate fully formed.
I liked "Clint Eastwood" and "Rock the House". The other songs not so much. 2/5
I know a lot of people my age really like Gorillaz, but I don’t get it. I wasn’t familiar with much other than the hits, I didn’t find a whole lot else when I listened. Some interesting grooves but I didn’t find the substance. Repetitive.
Couple of huge tunes, but an awful lot of shite too.
Going into this album I thought I knew it. Oh how I was wrong. I know 2 songs off this album and that is it. Honestly I didn't care for it. I thought I liked the Gorillaz. Then I realized it was there 2005 album that I knew and liked. Ifs funny how you hold on to something thinking you liked it all. Im now trying to go back and see if I really like them. Demon Day for sure I do but I need to go back and listen to more then just that. I feel like I might not like them as much as I thought. Didn't care for this album. its ok but its whatever to me.
I was too young to appreciate this when it first came out, it was something my friends’ “cool older siblings” listened to. I’ve been looking forward to this listening experience for a long time and frankly it was just… fine? It feels like a really well made album, it just doesn’t pique my interests too much… besides “Latin Simone” but that’s due to the feature from a member of “Bueno Vista Social Club”. Not everything can be special to everyone but I appreciate it exists!
A few songs I liked well enough, would listen to on a lo-fi playlist and when in that kind of chill mood but probably not much outside of that. Musically I’m sure it’s really good but I found a lot of it quite repetitive and struggled to tell the difference between songs at first. Some great vocals and lots of funky bass lines which was cool.
Pretty boring and irritating beyond the one hit, "Clint Eastwood", which is catchy but also irritating from the number of times I was subjected to it in high school. I had to turn the album off at "Sound Check (Gravity)" because of the dude's weird voice.
This came out when I was in high school and all of my friends really liked it. We listened to it a lot. Re-listening to it now, I don't really understand the appeal. Its generally kind of down-beat - not exactly depressing, but much of it is really slapped-out, like someone on prozac. That's kind of what Albarn's voice sounds like all the time. A lot of the supposed "high points" of many of the hits are a guest solo rap, which I generally find to be uninspiring. And the back half of the CD is terrible, just has some real duds on it. It's whatever.
Had to attempt listening to this multiple times before I could get through it in one sitting - it's just incredibly boring
I recall being fine with Clint Eastwood at the time it was released but didn’t like it enough to explore further. I never much cared for Blur and Alburns super British delivery. While Blur bores me, The Gorillaz managed to straight up annoy me. There were moments that I was on board for, some of the beats were enjoyable. Man Research was downright awful and the peak of my annoyance. Somehow they managed to fall shy of my low expectations. 2 stars
There were a couple good songs. Usually when there was more guitar. I don't think I would consider this a rock album. It is more hip-hop.
Re-Hash: reminds me of sublime a bit, 5/10 5/4: So fucking British/ 6.5/10 Tomorrow Comes Today: Blueeessyyy 7.5/10 New Genius: It's giving in my time of dying by Zep. Not as good tho. 4/10 Clint Eastwood: fucking banger 9/10 Man Research: coooool; little weird tho as it goes on 6.5/10 Punk: not my thing 3/10 Sound Check: this dude sounds like if Chris Martin lost his voice. Genuinely bad and annoying. Cool instrumental tho 3/10 Double Bass: chill, a little boring tho 5/10 Rock the house: Heat. shake ya ass crack 8/10 19-2000: Such an ugly keyboard tone that somehow works. 6/10 Latin Simone: Finally a good singer on this album. 6.5/10 Starshine: This guys voice is irritating to me. 3/10 Slow Country: Beautiful synth. Mid song. 5/10 M1 A1: nobody is there. 6/10 Dracula: Not that stimulating to me. 4.5/10 Left hand suzuki method: Knights of Cydonia Intro noise?? 4/10 Clint Eastwood (2): wasn't expecting to like this so much 8/10 Overall: solid album. I liked the songs where his voice wasn't the main focal point. On experimental-ish albums like this you sorta expect to not fuck with EVERYthing. Overall (avg of all scores): 5.58/10. I enjoyed it but I wouldn't rave about it
Listened to a few from Gorillaz before, but never a whole album. I was hoping I'd enjoy more of this than I did. A lot of repetitive filler tracks without a lot going on. I can see how it is innovative through the characters created though. Definitely unique. Highlights: Clint Eastwood 19-2000
I only liked Clint eastwood
Only one song I liked
It's whatever ... too much going on not a fan.
wild that this was the chosen gorillaz album - demon days is a certified classic and has so many more bangers. clint eastwood is an incredible song though, and I haven't heard Rock the House before but I really liked it. Also 19-2000 is pretty clean. Honestly - middle third of the album >> rest
I didn't care for much for this album, it's mainly the main vocalist's voice that I don't really like
Not really the music I listen to.
Okay but not timeless
anhörbar
It's an interesting "proof of concept", though I don't find a lot of substance here. The virtual band idea is cool (and has clearly gotten Gorillaz somewhere), but this really feels like a guy fucking around with a few pieces of equipment, and two well done Del Tha Funky Homosapien verses. Favorite tracks: "Clint Eastwood", "19-2000"
3-4 songs I liked, da rest was doodoo
Other than the one song I knew I honestly was really bored by the album. Feels like you need to be high laying on the couch. It has sort a cynical vibe too, which doesn't fit every mood.
I quite enjoyed the two singles but god there is so much fluff on this
Doodles
This is actually a pretty fun album, it just doesn't feel right for me. I don't feel compelled to download any of these songs, but it's a cool vibe and at a different time in my life I would have really liked it.
Kind of a trip. Can't decide if good trip or bad trip.
I love Blur. I love Damon Albarn's voice. I love cartoons. Yet, I've never really liked Gorillaz as much as I feel I should. There are a couple of cool tracks here, but nothing sets me alight. I've always found 19-2000 annoying too. Favourite tracks: Clint Eastwood, Rock The House, Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo).
I think the singles and image they portrayed back in the day led the general public to think they were a lot edgier and experimental than they actually were. This album was surprisingly mundane, although it did get better as it went on.
Meh. Don't really get what this was about. I don't think it was influential musically despite a couple neat tunes.
Oh look Damon's got a sequencer and made some demos
1.5
Didn’t like it as much as I remembered. A couple bangers, the rest was noisy
Gear: Hifiman Arya Artwork: zeitlos cool... Wertung: 🌟🌟(🌟)/5
This started out better than I expected, but then felt kind of a chore to listen to in the 2nd half.
I’m going into this jaded because I have never liked Gorillaz. All in all tho it’s not horrible. I don’t exactly hate it. I do like the beats and the grooves. They kind of lay a decent foundation on every song and then do absolutely nothing with it. “Clint Eastwood” is trash. And what’s with the Thom Yorke cosplay on some of these songs. You can do falsetto without doing his exact voice. I hate all the record scratching too, but it’s fine. I think they invented shopping mall music.
gorillerz. nonie es album glost aber aesthetic mega früeni 2000er und schono influential glaub? re hash maaad geili verschideni stimme wo singed. 5/4 haaaarde bass synth. find s goht recht dumm. new genius mega moody, alles isch allgemein extrem moody. clint eastwood halt mega bekannt, aber s isch au chli moody und dark und weird? moll guete song aber finden etz au nöd haaammer. vorallem isch de schluss z lang. man research funny falsetto, glaub de damon het so wälle tue als wäred mehrero lüt ussert ihm fürd musig verantwortlich. oke finds recht ass. punk tönt halt chli punkig und finds no cool aber sie hend glaub au afoch wölle en punksong mache afoch so. nöd sooo cool. sound check au afoch moody dark stuff, irgendwie bini null im mood für da. double bass fangt au wieder so ah, alte s regnet scho duss damon muschmer nöd no meh depri mood geh. langet. würkli nöd geil zum lose findi. rock the house tönt wieder wie OG hip hop aber mit scheiss flöte. ok d flöte isch slightly funny. aber d lyrics sind komplett leer seged nüt. au wenns e parodie oder satire oder so wär ischs immerno whack sorry 19-2000 isch recht funny. immerno jarring as fuck. latin someone isch chli buena vista mit halt gorillaz drumbeat hinedra? ok de sänger isch würkli vo buena vista. singt halt extrem geil. aber s passt nöd so richtig. slow country her no cuti synths aber finds au huere langwilig. oke s isch easy aber echt ha d nase voll. An ok album
A couple good songs, but mostly pretty weird.
Just kinda boring
No thanks
This really isn't my bag. I like Clint Eastwood, but the majority of the album misses the target.
There's a few good songs on here, but overall it's just not very good. A lot of it feels like they wanted to stand out, but it doesn't work too well
wank
Genre: Electro Pop Instruments: 2/5 Modern Translation: 1/5 Dance Potential: 1/5 Listening Location: commute to work and at work Heard it before: No Favourite Song: Clint Eastwood Remix Made me feel: A little disappointed because their other well known album is so much better. A lot of variety in this one though. Wouldn’t listen again.
It's fine.
Liked the hits/singles, but found much of the other stuff plodding
I don't think this one has aged well since it was something kinda interesting when it came out. Today it feels really tiring. Not great not terrible. Has few cool beats, but that is about it.
Kind of underwhelming compared to newer gorillaz albums.
I liked it at first but then it got and stayed annoying.
Tostón
Day48 - i was never a fan of the gorillaz but i tried listening with an open mind but other than clint eastwood i couldn’t get into it
1 song is really good. The rest are okay. Good beats, but sometimes the lyrical vocalizing is irritating.
Never really been a fan of the gorillaz
Not bad
This isn't required listening. There are some good to great tracks on here, but there is too much. Too many tracks. The Gorillaz are a project. They don't need full length albums. Do singles as music video releases. Clint Eastwood is a great single, Del the Funky Homosapien kills it.
The singles out shine most of the deep cuts. Wish there were half scores on this website but officially unofficially this album is like a 5/10 maybe a 6/10 if I'm feeling nice. Gorillaz later work Demon days, Plastic Beach and Song machine are much better. Its definitely not their worse by any means but less special, repetitive, and has one big stinker right in the middle "Double Bass." Iconic Album but outshined. P.S. Love the cover
This was OK. I think the singles are very cool and extremely evocative of the time. Unfortunately, it's a bit full of filler, and when it flops, it flops pretty hard. Not unpleasant, but not one to return to.
BL: I have lots of childhood nostalgia associated with Gorillaz, and my dad used to have the Demon Days album on CD which is a pretty good record. Only know “Clint Eastwood” off this record so it’ll be interesting to hear how this record is. AL: this was actually not that great in my opinion. I found the sounds to be rather boring throughout the record, lots of samey stuff. Generally too long for its own good and not enough to sustain itself in my eyes, which is a shame because Demon Days is actually a brilliant record. This one just isn’t in my eyes. I guess this album is on the list more for the precedent it established as the virtual band, this is cool still and for that I understand it’s inclusion on the list. Otherwise I find it to be pretty underwhelming FT: “Clint Eastwood”, “Rock The House”, “Slow Country” 2/5
Veldig gnålete
Nothing to see here. Not even the album with “Feel Good Inc” on it. In a genus move, they took the best song, “Clint Eastwood” and remixed it for a second track fans could dig into. Ok, it just wasn’t what I hoped. Left disappointed.
Only 2 songs really worth listening to
In the 2000s you could add “z” to the end of a word instead of “s” and this would instantly make it the coolest thing ever! It was a truly cursed time to be alive
I liked some of the tracks but it didn’t do anything amazing in my opinion. I really like the gorillaz but I don’t love them. The album lost me until Latin Simone got me back on it. Probably won’t listen again. The more I listen to Clint Eastwood the more I like it. No Wonder it’s one of their hits
Outside of Clint Eastwood it was a surprisingly dull listen.
Some good spots, but mostly meh.
not for me
soo boring. \"oh dope beat, I wonder where this song will go?\" Nowhere. The song will go nowhere. it's all style over substance; built to sell cars.
Pleasant to listen to but devoid of anything noteworthy
liked a few songs but not a fan of this album. i think theres better gorillaz stuff out there
Quirky album but not for me
very quirky, i like some of it. not quirky in the way i like. every song is lacking any layer or color or texture, i want more layers.
Boring
I felt sleepy when listening :D
Bon, c'est mal parti : 1ere chanson boring : dire plus de 30 fois \"it's the money or stop\", ça me gonfle.
I'm familiar with a few Gorillaz songs, but I've never listened to one of their whole albums before. I seem to remember that Plastic Beach was on a lot of best of lists in 2010, and I know the band has a pretty solid following, so I had pretty high hopes for this album. Unfortunately, this album wasn't really my speed. It wasn't terrible to listen to, but it was just kind of boring. Only a few songs stood out from the rest of the album ("Clint Eastwood," "Rock the House," "Slow Country," and "M1 A1"), and even those songs weren't super interesting, they mostly stood out because they were a little change of pace from the rest of the album. I can understand why this album is on this list though. It was a groundbreaking concept to have a band made up of fictional members, and it still feels relevant, as AI and the debate about AI art has been heating up in the last year or so. Hopefully, Gorillaz don't become an excuse for people to let AI create 'art.' Gorillaz may not be my cup of tea, but at least they were created by real artists.
Listened to it three times and in the end I had to skip most of the songs because how boring the were. Listen to whole thing for over hour that's not for me unfortunately. Kinda let me down, judging by the reviews I expected something more.
All sounds the same. I was a fan of Blur, but this arty-fatsy shit isn't doing it for me. Clint Eastwood is the only redeeming feature, just like a lot of Clint's films.
Liked about half the songs
Unique sound for the time but it didn't do much for me now, felt like a lot of filler songs and lacked some of the variety from later Gorillaz albums with the many collabs. 3/10
Ok
Meh
Not sure how to feel about this one going in. Obviously a well known band and I knew a couple singles but never checked out the album. It could have gone either way. This is... Not great. Even the singles are more languid and poorly realised than I remember or their later works. Disappointing, experimental, and messy.
A few hits. Other than that it is the 2000s equivalent of a synthesizer. Dated, aged quickly and not interesting anymore.
First ever listen to this. Some good ideas, and interesting styles. I only recognised one tube, the one about a bag. Only got about half way through. It's quite a long album, right? Some sounds seem a bit dated, which is funny, cos I think of this band as being quite recent. Time flies, doesn't it?
It's not actually that good
Had a buddy in high school who despised Gorilllaz. Couldn't figure out why. I only heard their hits, and they were fun bops. After hearing this album, I understand his hate. Anti-music post grunge SLOP. Clint Eastwood is the only thing saving this from a 1.
1 good hit song. The rest is instantly forgettable.
Best song - Clint Eastwood
Some debuts are the best thing the band ever do, some are - appropriately enough for a cartoon band - a sketch of what they will go on to grow into. This is a latter, with Demon Days as a 1000% leap forwards. Is it just my imagination or was the Clint Eastwood single version way beefier than this, or has time flattened my memory?
Clint Eastwood is a good song that's been consistently played for over 20 years. The rest of the tracks are horrific. Honestly, it doesn't even sound like the same artist. More like 1.5 stars, but I'll go with 2 for Clint Eastwood.
Gorillaz is mostly a jumble of lifeless hip hop beats, a guitar once in a while and some strange but signature sync sounds. Clint Eastwood is by far the best song on the album, it has what very few songs on the album have, life and energy… actual rapping. It’s not awful but it’s also very overrated. 5.7/10
The Gorillaz: Giants of cartoon music, a band of many faces and many hits, anchored by Albarn's never-stale songwriting chops and blueprinted well by their self-titled debut. Looking closer at that first point, however, reveals that specificity isn't found in itself. The record splits the difference of Britpop, hip-hop, and 90s electronic music and is unable to counteract the prolixity of any of it. Doesn't work in album form; The white background gives it away.
I love this artist, but I don’t like this album that much 2/5
Can’t say I love the sounds in this album. Too alt for me - coming from a guy that listened to arctic monkeys and the xx I got to the second half of the album and actually found a few songs I liked (19-200, rock the house, Latin Simone) Quite a tonal shift from the first half to the second half
Not my style but Clint Eastwood is a banger
The rap based tracks are decent but too much of the album is Damon Albarn being annoying
Man, I don't feel this has aged well. Sounds pretty dreary. Extra star for Del the Funky Homosapien on Clint Eastwood. Won't be returning to it.
Enjoyed the rest of this album outside of Clint Eastwood a lot less than I would have guessed. Just ok for me.
Clearly still getting the hang of things. Lot of stinkers but some bangers Favorite song: Clint Eastwood
Didn’t do much for me. Most of the songs felt clunky. Clearly they were still getting their footing on their debut album. Fav song: Clint Eastwood
Cool album art that looks like a cross between gorillas and zombies driving a jeep. Moody song. Although it's calm with some lo-fi elements, it keeps me feeling anxious and on edge. Clint Eastwood = favourite Okay after 7 songs I decided this album wasn't for me. I ended on Sound Check, which actually sounded a little like someone was just vocal warming up, but with their tongue out of their mouth, and it also gave the call to prayer vibes. Anyways, moving onto the Strokes now. Bye.
Not a huge fan of this honestly, cool album with like zero relisten potential, not my genre
I didn't feel the need to stop listening is as much positivity as I can muster. It wasn't awful but equally, it wasn't memorable or inspiring. Even the well-known tracks weren't versions I was familiar with. It left me somewhat apprehensive of what other albums have made it on to this list.
I thought I liked the gorillaz, it must be only there popular stuff cause I didn’t like most of this album
Bloated and pretty meh
Bunch of noise. Not really enjoyable
Too experimental for me
not their best work
Confusing genre definition, swaps between grunge, rock, lofi, hiphop, rap. 19-2000 and Clint Eastwood are clearly written as hits and disrupt the flow of the album. Repetitive melodies within the songs.
2 stars for the two good songs. Other albums i do enjoy from gorillaz, but this wasnt for me
Hip-hop-ey, not too interesting
The album was as repetitive as my points about it bein repetitive. Around halfway through, I could not be bothered listening to the songs all the way through, but I did, I knew what was to come. There was only a few songs from the album that I actually liked. Re-Hash Nice intro The vocals are nice I like the guitar A bit repetitive towards the end It goes on my playlist 5/4 I like the guitar in separate ears Like the vocals I like the electrical production sounds Added to playlist Tomorrow Comes Today Nice piano and drums I love the softer vocals at the start, reminds me of Radiohead I like how laid-back it feels I like the long outro Like the weird vocal effect right at the end Added to playlist New Genius (Brother) Feels very eerie Feels like a spy mission "Brother, sister too, do what you must do" flows nice Feels repetitive I don't like the vocal effects at the end, it feels very 2000s disco which isn't always great Won't add it to the playlist Clint Eastwood Great drums I like the beat The rap verse is good but feels very English (derogatory) The vocals sound quite nasally which sounds quite good Does this song need almost 6 minutes? Like the whisper at the end of the rap verse (2:40) Repetitive Won't add to the playlist abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz typing test because I was bored at the end of the song Man Research (Clapper) I don't know what it is but the zig_zaggy sounds are really good I feel like I'm in space The vocals are really good I like the "Yae"s Getting repetitive (2:15) Won't add to the playlist Punk I like the title Oh, it's an interlude Was that moaning? I like the guitar and vocals together Added to playlist Sound Check (Gravity) Got distracted by my dog for the first minute Sounded nice though Not enough vocals for me I'm tired Repetitive Won't add to playlist Double Bass Nice instumentals I'm annoyed by how long the songs are, it's ok for a few long songs but this many, one after the other? Waiting for vocals, but not getting them (1:20) Wait, there's only 10 words in the song, i like words Boring I yawned and missed the part he talked Won't add to playlist Rock The House Nice intro English (derogatory) And when the MC rhyme and the DJ spin, i want to go down into a grave Why's he talking about my toes I don't like this song Won't add to playlist 19-2000 6 songs after this Far better than the last few OMG HE SAID GORILLAZ It's a little repetitive but it's alright I'm bored Sleeping slep... won't add to playlist Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo) Not english This whole album feels the same I don't like this album much There's not much to say about this song, it's just boring abcba - abcde - defga - abcde - e piano notes Won't add to playlist Starshine I might just start skimming through these, they all sound the same and I need to pack Too few lyrics Won't add this one to the playlist Slow Country Feels like I'm on holiday I'm bored of this I don't like this I want to skip this one Won't add to playlist M1 A1 Like the fade in I feel tension building up Who's screaming hello? Is he okay? I hear an electric guitar I'm liking it What's going to happen it better not be underwhelming when will it happen Now? now? now? nope It's getting quicker I swear if all this is for nothing oooh drums and some screaming thing I like it for once Added to playlist Wait, this is the last actual song
Average. Lo-fi hip-hop tracks stand out more than the alternative rock tracks.
This is my second time listening to a full album from this band and hopefully the last. They have some good singles but their albums are impossible to sit through. *In my opinion*, heavily overrated.
Plastic Beach is sufficient for this list, but they're from UK, so of course they get extra recognition. 2 nepotisms out of 5 🦍🦍
I never got the hype around this band and I still don't. I avoided it when I was younger because "Clint Eastwood" was overplayed and didn't do anything for me and now that I've listened to the whole thing, I feel like that was still the right decision. It's pretty much Blur with some rap sprinkled throughout and just boring. Not my thing and I don't get what grabs people. 2/5
A dabblers compilation of dub murk and uncommitted guests that has interesting sounds circling void: this has a lackadaisical, fix it in the studio character wrapped in Jamie Hewlett’s cheeky pop art, which never betrays any underlying purpose, manifesto or feeling.
Naze
Nice grooves, relaxed Lo-Fi production but all the tracks are a bit the same, and there isn't a lot of rhythmic, melodic, or harmonic development.
This was a bit of a different one. The first two songs were not good. The third one was pretty good. There was a song that sounded like Elmo sing it. There was a song that they hired a fifth grader with his recorder to play in. Some of the stuff was pretty good, a lot of it was not. Strange.
I be just don’t really like this. Some good beats but it’s just drones on mostly.
I was really really expecting to enjoy this a lot, a few tracks in it felt like looking after a toddler who was trying to get my attention. Could just be that I wasn't in the mood at the time.
Wow, really surprised I didn't like this one. Have pretty fond memories of the Gorillaz though that is more from cultural osmosis than anything and have never actually sat down to listen to a full album of theirs before. Pretty rambling and samey to my ears, though if anyone disagrees I fully back your dismissal of my opinion.
2.75
Eh not as good as I remembered. Kind of boring didn’t finish
Man, what a disappointment. I’ve always said I like the Gorillaz…I guess I just meant plastic beach. I understand, or at least I want to tell myself, that they were experimenting. Trying to find their sound. But man a lot of these tracks fell flat and were almost annoyingly bad. Some tracks along the middle pick up, the synth in Double bass is pretty groovy. Man I don’t want to hate this thing.
2 reasons I don’t like this album: 1. Too damn long 2. It’s dog shit Best: slow country MMM: sunshine in a bag or something like that
I actually only like Re-Hash :/.
Some songs on this album were good but I didn't really like it.
I expected more, really disappointing
A couple of earworms on the big singles but a lot of filler.
Never really got this
Alternative isn't really my thing, and this is as alternative as it gets. I couldn't finish it. 2/5
A bit of a time capsule. A bit boring. Not particularly memorable, but also not annoying.
Meh
Some good tracks, not the most interesting Gorillaz album, even their more recent one was better.
Two of my favourite things are instrumentals and weird time signatures and Gorillaz has examples of both of these. Overall, this is still a little too hip-hoppy for me
Just not very good is it
Never really got this stuff, too popular whilst also being too hipster
The question I have to ask myself is, am I too old to relate to this music in any way? The answer is probably yes. On first listen (and most likely only) it seems like the album tries so hard to bounce between musical genres it doesn't land in any. What will Apple Music say, "You may also like", after I listen to this? - 2 stars
Not really bad. But certainly not great. Maybe good. This is extremely average. I kept waiting for one great song or something cool to happen. I'm still waiting. Lots of weird spacey sounds mixed in though. Good album cover I guess.
I know who the Gorillaz are but I had never heard this album before. First couple songs were a little too repetitive for me. Clint Eastwood is obvious standout. And yeah the rest of the album is just not for me. However I will give an extra star for the music video for Clint Eastwood. If you haven’t seen it I would recommend giving it a watch.
Not my favorite. A lot of instrumentals and the rap was just fine. Shoutout NBA 2k14 with Clint Eastwood
I kind of disappointed I didn’t enjoy this as much as I thought I was going to. Some of the beats were good but I don’t know. Nothing resonated with me.
Meh
This was fine, but only Clint Eastwood really hints at the heights Gorillaz would grow into. Most of these tracks are super forgettable.
All seemed a bit blasé ... maybe you had to be there.
Definitely not my type of music. Too much random stuff.
I've enjoyed the odd Gorillaz song but not listened to a whole album before. Didn't really come away with a strong willingness to listen to any more of their albums. Too many of the tracks sound like a jam session. Highlights: Clint Eastwood Rock The House
Quite up and down but overall there are more duff songs
I bought this right when it came out. I likes Blur’s stuff and Clint Eastwood was amazing. Spent the next few weeks forcing myself through it and really trying to like it. That just didn’t happen. Too much filler that keeps it from being a good album. This is a band with an average, even if in a lot of ways unique, catalog. Along the way they’ve produced a handful of truly outstanding songs. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding
Some interesting bits but most of it didn't do much for me
Obviously I was familiar with the song Clint Eastwood, but other than that I don’t think I recognized any. It wasn’t a bad album- it had some interesting aspects to it, however it just wasn’t anything spectacular. I’d listen again but not excitingly.
I do have to say that I very much appreciate a song in 5/4 that's just entitled "5/4" Noel Gallagher once called this band "music for 12 year olds" which is hilariously petulant and so on-point for Noel but it's mostly true. Not... that that's necessarily bad or even something I would be against. Hell I still dig listening to old Van Halen which is definitely music for 12 year old boys :P Inconsistent and laconic is what I'd call this. There's some kinda-cool stuff here beyond the forced odd time signature; e.g. "Tomorrow Comes Today" is just that - kinda cool - but is it good is what I'm asking myself with no real answer. So much of this is sort of just chill downbeat ("Sound Check") that's fine to listen to but am I ever gonna crave it? I'm never sure what the actual point is of calling this a "virtual band" or with the cartoons etc. - seems silly and/or pointless but what the hell do I care - call yourself a snowman if you want. I guess I only bring it up because it has no bearing on the music; a few guys who wanted to "hide" their identity (but not *really* so again - why). Maybe the cartoon logos are a perfect representation of the band after all - short term low-level gratification. It was fine but after listening to it I don't really remember it at all - no hooks, no instruments/instrumentation/no big soaring impact. Isn't that at least part of the point? 5/10 2 stars.
I enjoy their biggest hit and was really looking forward to checking out their discography. I hadn't done a complete deep dive of their work until today. I am disappointed and sad that I didn't enjoy this as much as I was hoping. There were a couple bright spots during the listen, but the majority of the music was not exciting enough for me. I will be re-visiting this album in the future to re-assess my initial opinion, and I will be checking out their other albums in total in the future.
It sounded calculated & precise, as if a few geniuses put this together but they lacked any soul. Some catchy parts, but otherwise sleepy and hard to feel.
I appreciate the Gorillaz for creating a sound all their own, but I struggle with the heavy use of loops and the sometimes annoyingly high pitched vocals.
Not great, not terrible, not memorable.
So firstly hats off to Damon for going down this path, a 21st century Archies is a pretty clever idea, even if it was only to get away from Graham Coxon's drinking. In my mind no one's quite done a Weller when he busted out of The Jam to start honeymooning down by the Seine with Mick Talbot, but this comes close. Does it hold up, writing and producing with a cartoonist? Not really, it has some fine moments but it tends to drag on, about half way through I realised I was thinking about how long it would take me to sort the Xmas box recycling. 5/4 is great, but it is a Blur song song that would have walked straight into their eponymous 1997 album. Sadly it is just a bit boring.
i didn’t listen very hard but this seemed shallow and smug
Only listened to their singles and they are decent but not really into this album. Difficult to score feel a 3 is too generous.
I only ever knew the song Clint Eastwood. It’s a one-hit wonder I’ll jam to, but I never sought this kind of music out. It’s not for me. If we’re talking bands represented by cartoon avatars then it’s Prozzäk or bust, baby! (If you don’t know them and you’re not Canadian, look them up!)
- Don't really like New Genius (Brother), was vibing up until that point - Not a fan of Clint Eastwood either - Ok I don't like a lot of these actually (up to Sound Check (Gravity)) - Sorry did he just say "shake your ass crack"??? - I'm liking Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo) - M1 A1 is giving me anxiety Overall impressions...really no idea. I do not think I enjoyed it much, but interesting for sure.
I'm listening to it now, so we'll see... but I'm going to go ahead and assume it's a 2 star affair based off of the likelihood that "Clint Eastwood" is the best song here, so that I can catch up and see what the next record is. I can say with certainty though that after two songs I definitely prefer the Monkees to Gorillaz.
Always really liked the singles off this but realise now it was the remixes I liked - someone else gave them a bit of something that the original versions were missing. Didn't really listen to the album, more inoffensive background music that kept me plodding.... it is a plodder
Felt a bit like the mamas and papas album: one mega hit and everything else was meh.
Ok
Just rubbish. Damon Allbarns sarcastic whining voice irritates me and the music is hopeless.
Don’t know why these songs in particular needed a cartoon band concept.
I like Blur and hip-hop and dub. In fact, I like all the elements that go into Gorillaz. And what's more, I want to like Gorillaz. They seem cool. But damn, I can't bring myself to like Gorillaz. This album is so dreary and bland. And for a guy who knows how to write amazing hooks (Albarn) they are all but missing from this entire album. Yeah, "Clint Eastwood" is fine, but the rest ranges from boring to annoying. I couldn't wait for this thing to end.
I was looking forward to this when it came up but it turns out it's mostly weird garbage with a couple of good songs thrown in the mix.
Good but
B-puolen instrumentaalit/jammailut (huoh!!!) vaikuttavat levyn kokonaislaatuun tuhoisasti. Eivätkä biisien koukutkaan suurimmaksi osaksi ole nerokkaimmasta päästä.
08/29/2022 Honestly…..this sounds like music made for teenagers. Like teenagers probably eat this shit up thinking that they’re alt as fuck for listening to this music. Fuck it, good for them, I guess. Really couldn’t get into this album. I’ve got an attachment to tomorrow comes today bc I have a memory attached to it, but frankly the rest of the album annoyed me. Oh well. — Today was a typical Monday. Had some really frustrating computer issues that will hopefully get fixed tomorrow. Landscape architecture class was a bit of a fight to get through bc my professor is a bit of a pain, but at least the class is easy. Oh well. No class in the AM, so I’ll have some extra time to maybe squeeze in a workout finally. <3
3,5/17
Not great.
Tomorrow comes to day, Clint Eastwood och 19-2000 är bra, men resten av plattan är all over the place. Känns som ett experiment.
Wasn't surprised on looking up to see this has gone from the book, it's a fine, decent indie dance genre-hip-trip-hopping album but 20 years later (eek) I don't exactly think of it as earth changing. We are also slap bang in the era of too-long albums from bands who feel they must squeeze all the space out of a CD. Not many of these tracks are what I'd consider essential, either. There's a couple of surprises though, the smokey Latin Simone saunters in towards the end and steals the show for me. I have no memory of this at the time. 19-2000 holds up well. Slow Country was nice. The band was a fun gimmick, giving Jamie Hewlett a paycheck after Tank Girl, which is nice. The Clint Eastwood remix at the end is, and always was, hella annoying.
Mehhh. Always considered Gorillaz to be style over substance. A couple of cool beats aside, I don't have any real use for this. D
it was fine.
Was expecting to like this as a fan of a lot of the Gorillaz work but this one fell flat for me. Clint Eastwood is obviously a classic though. Favorite Song: Clint Eastwood
You know how when you think you like a band well enough based on their hits, then when you actually listen to an album you’re like… “what is this?” This was like that for me. I was not expecting such psychedelic vibes in so many of the songs. Mostly not my cup of tea, but Clint Eastwood will always be a classic.
Obviously remember the hits. Didn't particularly like them at the time or now and the rest didn't sway me.
I get this was doing something new with the cartoon visuals etc and the whole Gorillaz project gathered pace after this and became massive. But obviously the visuals are not in play if you’re just listening to the album so you need to base your views on the music and, with hindsight, it’s not that great. The big singles were smashed but even they now sound a bit dated. And the rest mostly have a vibe of Blur off cuts with occasional rapping. Better stuff was to come.
Not as good as I remember it. Some good tunes but sounds very one dimensional. Good driving music.
Damon Albarn is an interesting artist that tries new things all the time, but this album did not work for me.
I never thought Gorrillaz would amount to anything more than a novelty. I was right.
A mediocre collection of songs that forms the debut album by 'the world's first virtual band'. There's not a lot of substance behind the novelty on show here. Based on the singles I would have expected this to be much more varied in style, but most of it is fairly uninteresting guitar music. Another Damon Albarn project with a couple of catchy singles but little depth in quality. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Clint Eastwood Date listened: 20/05/22
Mostly uninteresting and boring dance music. 2 🌟
That was really boring.
The filler is properly crap
Not my cup of tea besides a couple of singles.
Doesn’t float my boat
Not into it, though I do like the hit from this album, Clint Eastwood, alright.
shit
Has some okay moments, but overall it didn't really do much for me. I felt like the singer was just mocking the whole thing, then after listening for a while I read the Wikipedia entry on this album and this group, and I guess that was the point (maybe?). I don't know. Didn't change my experience of the music, though. Some decent hooks and interesting moments, but not enough to make me want to come back to this.
🥱 nah
Boring music for boring people who’ll give you a boring monologue about why this music is actually genius
I was inspired by this to listen to Del's solo album again, and it still sounds great after all these years. Thick and crunchy Lench Mob beats, has that unmistakeable SP1200 vibe written all over it. Unfortunately, the album of the day wasn't this album but Gorillaz which is a huhe pile of crap.
so is this like a ben 10 fan project or something? i do not love this. punk--horrid intro. why do people do this? sound check (gravity)--this is also terrible. where is the music? there's a bass line and main rhythm drum, there's distorted looped vocals, occasional bits and bobs of extra percussion. lots and lots of record scratching. all working together to create a cacophony of *noise*. the best part of the song is the sample of *nighttime insect noises*. double bass--ok that's a fine enough riff. badudadaaa da daa da da da "all of which makes me anxious, at times unbearably so." if that doesn't encapsulate how i feel about this kind of music, i don't know what does. rock the house--is this trumpet intro familiar? not a big fan of funky del tho. latin simone (que pasa contigo)--best song on the album. if only it had more record scratching and too-rich bass drum. i jest, it would be better without those things. in concept, the song is good. unfortunately it is marred by the gorillaz. m1a1--ya i hate this. thank goodness it's over. the gorillaz signature sound seems to be nonstop bass and record scratches and making noises on the frontier of listenability and calling it music, "all of which makes me anxious, at times unbearably so." 1/5. the best thing to come of this is discovering Ibrahim Ferrer from "latin simone", whose album Bueno Vista Social Club is actually worth listening to before you die. that the gorillaz prompted this discovery shall not improve their rating.
Only good song is Clint eastwood
I went a long time only hearing a couple of Gorillaz songs. I could have gone longer
This is a god awful album. Why did I enjoy this years ago?
Tomorrow Comes Today is still a dope track, but the rest of the album is terrible.
It was bad
had to turn it off
Just like later Blur album this flips between brilliant and nonsense which overall makes for a terrible album.
The songs with Del are ok.
Shit
Only liked the songs with Del. 1/5
Not my type of music
Aaeeeeehhhhh really don't like it!
They had "Clint Eastwood" and one other Del track, and then a whole bunch of boring shit. A lot of talent in here, and yet they don't know what they want this thing to be. Kind of explains what the cartoon characters were for. Thought this would be at least a 2 based on CE alone, but there's so many songs on here that are so, so bad.
YES! I love repetitive hip-hop plagiarism from British white guys! YES! SCORE! When the characters are like my favourite anime!!! xD POG! I'm THE main character! Yes! Woo Hoo! Errm have I died and gone to heaven? Is this real life, chat?? There is like three solid beats and one solid verse on this thing, and the rest sustains the lifeforce of the dripping, fanged monstrosity behind the verbiage in the first paragraph. "Rap for suburban kids" is an insult to the intelligence of suburban kids. "Igmah Rahnil Da Kyrath" is an exaltation to the famished entity to which I must pledge fealty in order to escape my prison in the back of the Geep. 1.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Clint Eastwood really is the only redeeming quality
Easiest 1 I have given
Uuuuuh.
What a complete waste of time. I’m not well-versed in virtual bands, but if Gorillaz, the most successful one, are anything to go by, commercial dominance doesn’t equate to being entertaining or even good. I vaguely recognized “Clint Eastwood,” likely from back when MTV actually played music videos. If it came on today, I’d switch the channel without a second thought.
I could not wait for this album to end. I do not get it, I was bored out of my mind. Nothing really more to say about this, possibly the worst album I've listened to so far.
I dislike pretty much everything about this.
No
did not like it
Kedeligt.
Not in my edition of the book! 2001. 1 star. Blur outtakes. Fine if you like Damon Albarn, which I don't. One can only hope he sticks to collecting fossils instead of producing inexplicably popular shit like this.
Hate this band. Hate Damon Albarn. Hate this album. Simple as.
I would rather hit myself in the thumb with a hammer a couple hundred times than listen to this album.
Not very good music for humans. For gorillas though? Pretty impressive.
As innovating as their virtual artistry may be, their music is mind-numbingly boring.
Critical darlings but this just passed me by. Listened a few times over the weekend but nothing really grabbed me outside of the singles I already knew.
Generic kiddie-pop. This band is widely regarded as a joke… quite possibly cause they are one. Ain't my thing and I couldn't care much less if I never hear this again.
I thought I might like this album, but there was so much straight up noise that I got annoyed. I found this album made me angry after a point, and it is one of the very few albums I did not even finish. Hard pass.
Really? I have to listen this before I die? Why?
tough listen for most of these here folks slow country m1a1
If you produce this kinda stuff its as well to hide behind cartoons.
Just inexplicably boring and I hate some of the vocals. I’m sure it was seminal and influential in its time, but not something I would choose to listen to. Demon Days is better.
Meh
A boring, jumbled, rambling mess. I’ll skip the cartoons too.
A waste of my time.
This is truly horrible. I cannot understand how this has made the list, it really sounds like nothing, and no, that's not a compliment. It's just ridiculous, talentless would-be music. Bweuh.
Never particularly understood the whole Damon Albarn brand of alt music, be it Blur or Gorillaz. This was a difficult listen and I didn't actually manage to make it through the album. It's definitely not what I would consider good music, but that's just my personal preference. I can appreciate Gorillaz for their cultural impact and all, just don't make me listen to them again.
There might, MIGHT be 3 good songs here. The animation was cool but this doesn’t feel like a cool supergroup. It feels like wankery for no good reason.
Nicht meins. Ein Lied mit Sternchen ist ganz nett.
Messy and monotonous. Sounds quite grating. Strange instrumentals. Not a fan of the nasally, sloppy vocals. Weird lyrics too lol.
The Good: We’ve got cartoons! The Bad: The music isn’t as cool as the cartoons… The Ugly: Realizing that guerrilla warfare does not apply well within the music industry! Some days you wake up and look forward to finding out what the next album is going to be… so I saw this, and my excitement disappeared like snowflakes in the sun. I never understood why so many people were excited with Gorillaz, granted, I did enjoy the cartoonesque aspect that the band had, where nobody was excactly sure who the members were. But that doesn’t take away the fact that it is shit 2000’s music, while it was mr Blur who decided that he needed to create better music than the crap that was being published back then… crap in, crap out. Anyway, I’ve spent too much time talking about me NOT liking this… 1*
couldn't get through it
TERRIBLE. Not my vibe at ALL. Like maybe 1 or 2 songs I didn't mind, but overall it was like each person playing an instrument was playing a different song and some rando was spewing nonsense rap over it.
God I hate this band.
1/5
I was able to listen to it one time, just to get know, but never more... :D
Pish
It’s not virtual anything- it’s real people playing real music hiding behind cartoons and made up names. Pure gimmickry to hide lackluster talent
It's just Blur, but with sad comic book characters thrown in. I actually figured that maybe, just maybe, the Gorillaz album might have some interesting stuff on it. I've heard the big hits before, and found them wanting. Seems the album is just the hits with filler added, bad filler, to go with the sad comic stuff. There's only so much I can listen to Damon singing in a strange squeaky voice over a generic dub background. One star.
"If you watch MTV for too long, it's a bit like hell – there's nothing of substance there. So we got this idea for a cartoon band, something that would be a comment on that." Well they failed spectacularly at that goal. They did however succeeded in fitting in with MTV by producing an album with absolutely no substance what so ever. One of the reviewers here suggested listening to Deltron 3030 and while I can't say I like them much more but at least they produced something with a little more substance. So Gorillaz 1 star, Deltron 3030 2 stars.
1 hour and 4 minutes too long
Oof
