Reviews (page 5 of 14)

A fantastic album. If not their best, one of them. Definitely top 2. I enjoy every song on this album and believe that it has a ton of range, but I’ve been listening to this album my whole life, so I’m a little biased. A generation defining album with incalculable impact. This is a great angsty album for moody teenagers that also contains deeper material you can find relevant later in life. 5/5

Was great when I was in 4th grade. Still just as great. 5/5

This album is one of those that will never grow old for me. Played it constantly for about 2 years when it came out, can even remember the first time listening to it on the journey home with my dad after buying it. It's comfort food now!

No hope of being objective about this one

Pop punk at his best

Dookie is on my favorite 90s records. Billie Joe Armstrong songwriting is at its best, with incredible punchlines, catchy chorus and verses. Tré Cool's drumming is energetic and wild. "Burnout" is one of the best intro ever. It gets the listener overwhelmed right from the start. Another peculiarity of the album can be found in the bridges, made up of and focusing on drum'n'bass. Okay, I'll shut up about it, I just love it.

Brings me back to listening to this in my old Honda Civic growing up! The Chump transition into Longview is primo. Longview also happens to be one of my favorite songs. Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, She, When I Come Around - this is my favorite kinda punk.

An album I’ve heard before and one I truly enjoy. Slight punkier edge to green day but still pop-punky.

This album was always an all time classic for me. All the songs are great but in addition to that the theme of the album is very well written and displayed throughout. It doesn't have that cringy whiney feel that some pop punk from this time and the early 2000s have where they are just complaining. It's genuinely a great look into loneliness, depression and that feeling of what am I supposed to do with my life. Billy Joels voice is always amazing and this is one of the only bands I constantly notice how great the drumming is and think Tré Cool is one of the best to ever do it.

Great pop-punk album. Not very ‘artistic’, per se, but very enjoyable nonetheless. There’s an entire run in the middle of the album that’s mostly made up of hits; who doesn’t know ‘Longview’, ‘Basket Case’, or ‘When I Come Around’? Just a great album.

The nostalgia is strong with this one. Basket Case and When I Come Around in particular take me back to pre-teen days at my friend’s house, before I even knew who Green Day were, discovering a new type of music that was edgy enough to excite a young boy, but with an accessible sense of melody. A kind of ‘pop-punk’, if you will… This is one of those albums where the 5 singles are so strong it seems a shame not to give the whole thing 5 stars, even when there are few tracks that I find pretty average. 4.5

Classic 90s album

Green Day had a huge influence on the music I liked growing up, this is one of their best albums.

I grew up listening to this album. It perfectly describes some of the teenage boy angst that we come up against. Especially in the mid to late 90s. Love it

What can I say? I like Green Day

Altered my brain chemistry when I first listened to this as a kid. Bangers from start to finish.

This is the best Green Day album and a good one as well! Lots of great songs

Just an amazing album, every track is a banger. Definitely reminds me of growing up so I'm more nostalgic versus others. Love the blend of bring punk to the pop mainstream. And I really loves the lyrics, melodies, and song breaks. Really great drums and basslines. 5/5 Favorites: Burnout, Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Pulling Teeth, Basket Case, She

Can I give two Green Day albums a 5 in good conscience? Because American Idiot is one of my all time favorite albums ever. Yes, yes I can. Green Day was my favorite band as a child and it’s a wonder why my parents were surprised I had anger issues. I was quite literally headbanging to Basket Case before I understood the concepts of addition and subtraction. I think one thing that I respect listening through this in full again is that with all this rage, there’s only one explicit song on the album, which is actually so impressive. Also Bastille did a very good cover of Basket Case with a more orchestral sound if anyone’s interested in that.

Nostalgia bomb. Sixth grade assembly cover band Basketcase. Great bass lines and drumming. AOLnation. Glitter gloss and pimples and binder collages and always wanting the boys who don’t want you. The ultimate of uncool said the Austin hipster now himself the ultimate uncool. It all comes around and back around. Stay golden, dookie.

I am pretty sure that I didn't really care for Green Day all that much back in the day. I'm sure glad that this project has put them into my listening path. They do not disappoint!

Some solid fun punk. Fun.

When I bought this album not long after its release I fell in love with Green Day. At the time this wasn’t exactly my expected sort of fare and I had plenty of friends react dismissively to my enjoyment of this. But I would feel vindicated over the years as Green Day grew and eventually created the incredible American Idiot. Green Day’s catchy, fun punk-pop songs had me at hello. But there was more to these songs once you become familiar with the lyrics. The performers on this album are a little bratty, a little self obsessed, a little irreverent and way smarter than you’d expect. Dookie is an attractive, youthful album that still charms me to this day. I’m pleased to still be enjoying Dookie after all these years.

3rd April 2023 Listened in the afternoon while painting and sorting Jake and Jess cats. Chilled evening watching SNL and BCS. Ah to be 15 again.

Having a Blast, Welcome to Paradise, When I Come Around. ¡Fantástico!

Third wave punk classic. Other than the throwaway last track, which might be a Daniel Johnston diss track?, there is not a bad song on this album. The run from Longview to When I Come Around is flawless and plays like a greatest hits compilation it’s so stacked with classic tracks. They hit the perfect mix of punk/slacker ethos and pure slap happy fun on this album. The next few albums that followed carried some of that forward, but they never did it again as authentically as Dookie.

Incredible album, seminal and genre defining pop punk record.

Alright, let's dive into the world of Green Day's Dookie album. This album was a game changer for the punk rock scene and has become a timeless classic that still resonates with listeners today. It's no surprise that you feel nostalgic listening to this album as it truly captures the spirit of the early '90s and the energy of youth. One of the most remarkable things about Dookie is that every single song on this album is an absolute banger. From the iconic opening track "Burnout" to the catchy "Basket Case" and the raw energy of "She", there's no doubt that this album was made to be listened to front to back. Green Day really hits it out of the park with their musicianship and songwriting, bringing together a cohesive sound that combines punk rock, pop, and grunge elements in a way that feels fresh and exciting. As you mentioned, the standout member of the band is the drummer, Tre Cool. His speed and precision on the drums are truly something to behold and add a unique flavor to the overall sound of the album. The guitar work from Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt is also excellent, with each member bringing their own distinct style to the table. The result is a band that sounds like they've been playing together for years, even though this was only their third album. But it's not just the musical talent that makes this album so special. The lyrics and themes of the songs really capture the feelings of being in your early twenties and dealing with the general malaise of life. Tracks like "Longview" and "Welcome to Paradise" explore themes of boredom and frustration, while "She" and "F.O.D." deal with the ups and downs of relationships. Now, let's talk about the elephant in the room - the infamous hidden track. While some may argue that it's a throwaway song, it's important to remember that this was a common practice at the time. It was a nod to the era where fans were used to waiting through minutes of silence to hear something extra at the end of an album. It may be jarring to hear it slapped onto the end of the last song, but it's all part of the experience of listening to this album and adds to the overall charm. In conclusion, Dookie is a punk rock masterpiece that has stood the test of time. It's an album that captures the energy and spirit of the early '90s while also exploring the themes and emotions that are universal to all generations. Green Day's musicianship and songwriting are top-notch, and each member brings something unique to the table. Whether you're a longtime fan or discovering this album for the first time, Dookie is a must-listen that will leave you feeling energized and nostalgic all at once.

An amazing album. While not my first intro into punk (that would be Smash) this definitely set off a long standing love affair with pop punk and bands with the Lookout sound. Tre Cool has to be on the of the best drummers in the business, and the songs all have such amazing pop sensibilities. 5/5

hits are great - rest pretty good. 4.5

Oddly enough, I had never listened to this complete album. This is wild to imagine given that the 90s rock era is what I grew up on, and I’ve heard half of these songs more time than I care to guess on the radio. The latter perhaps being the primary reason I have not gone from start to finish. That being said, I would give this album 5 stars just because of the nostalgia bump. Thinking of the album critically and neglecting the subjective tidal wave is nearly impossible, so I’ll just give my opinion at face value. Starting with the hits: Longview, Basket Case, and When I come around have always been songs to turn up when the local radio station spins. Welcome to Paradise is less of a favorite, but still great, throw She into that category as well. The rest of the album definitely doesn’t stray from this tried and true pop-punk formula so as a generalization, the power chords and infectious choruses are what make Green Day shine. I won’t say this is a complete album that must be listened to from start to finish, but the presence of the flagship songs is enough for me to recommend this album to anyone. Sassafras Roots, and in the End are honorable mentions.

A high watermark for early 90s punk rock.

A large part of teenage-starting to mow the lawn years.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE OF ALL TIME!!!!

Five stars, no questions asked.

I'd forgotten that "Longview," "Welcome to Paradise, "Basket Case," and "When I Come Around" were all on the same album. Those alone are worth a four-star grade, and the quality of the rest of the album bumps it up to an easy 5. This isn't just one of the best punk albums of the '90s (the only one I can think of that comes close is Rancid's "...And Out Come the Wolves," although I'm sure there are others), but one of the best album's of the '90s of any genre.

I was late to the punk scene (mostly because I had new wave/metal head friends), so this is was my first intro to pop-punk. This album came out the year I was a freshman & I instantly loved it.

So many memories tied to this album. It still holds up after all this time.

Good Job Green Day

Great stuff

I think I listened to "Dookie" four times over a three-day stretch, while also listening to "Kerplunk," "Insomniac," "Nimrod," "American Idiot," and part of "21st Century Breakdown." There was a lot of Green Day that weekend. You would get the impression that I love Green Day. My biggest impression was that Billy Joe needs some Nasonex. Or a neti pot. Or a humidifier. Or a long hot shower? It turns out that I referenced some of those albums when we reviewed "American Idiot." I said "Look, we all loved some 'Dookie.' It was dumb punk fun. But we're not gonna pretend that Green Day didn't go gradually downhill from there in their next several albums." and "Who knows, maybe I would eat my words if I went back and listened to all of 'Insomniac' or 'Nimrod.'" And now I'm eating my words. I do love "Dookie." (The album.) But the two follow-ups are nearly as good, and "Dookie" might actually go on a few songs too long. I still hold them responsible for pop-punk, and still think that "American Idiot" was a maturing of their sound that worked really well. But "Dookie" was already pretty polished. (I guess you CAN polish a turd.) And yet, despite all this, I had such a hard time rating this album. I couldn't really place why I was hesitating to give it a 5, so I listened over and over and took the deep dive into their catalogue. And I still don't really have a good explanation for exactly how I feel about Green Day. I like them a lot, I think. But it's not quite love. I do love "She." Underrated best song on "Dookie."

This is the album that kickstarted my little pop-punk loving heart.

The album HOLDS UP. forever.

One could argue this is the best album of the 90s. Culturally, there are good arguments for Nirvana’s Nevermind, Pearl Jam’s Ten (even though Vs is better), and Radiohead’s OK Computer. But you know what, I like this album better than all of those. It holds up just as well as the first time I heard it. Listening again, I realize that there are a lot of lyrics on this album that I don’t know. I used to think it was cheating to read the lyrics to an album if they were in the liner notes. Like it was more authentic if you learn the words by listening over and over. My opinion now…who really cares. Regardless, this album kicks ass and is a 90s defining work.

The first cd I ever bought. A classic.

The first Green Day album I was ever exposed was Nimrod. I had it on compact disc and probably owned it circa 1996. Dookie came before, so as I enjoyed more and more Green Day, I had to go back and listen to Dookie in pursuit of becoming a true fan. I appreciated the speed of it all: fast drums, fast chords, fast singing. And they had a guy called Tre Cool! So cool! Every song has that Green Day charm, and this is the most in-depth I've listened to this album since about 2001. Song I loved a lost this time around: Having A Blast, Chump, the bass riff in Longview, She, Sasafrass Roots and Coming Clean. Also LOTTA HITS: Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case and When I Come Around...all on one album. Whoa! A solid listen! Too bad they sold out in 2004, which meant a lot to an 18 year old Curtis, but a 37 year old Curtis totally gets why they did. Green Day Forever! "So why are you alone wasting your time? When you could be with me wasting your time?" -Sasafrass Roots

It's an absolute belter. Love it all. Interestingly Welcome to Paradise was on Dookie but originally on their previous album Kerplunk.

Just an awesome album. Nothing much else to say. The hits alone warrant a 5. Banger city. TBz 1. Welcome to Paradise 2. When I Come Around 3. Longview 4. Basket Case 5. She

friggin' classic! Grew up on this album. simple but great songs that make you feel angsty like you did when you were a kid!

Tres cool.

One of the best rock albums of 1994

Kick ass, Greenday at their best

Wow sticking with shit I used to listen to in the mid-90's. So the punk purists say this isn't punk, fuck them if you're actually punk you wouldn't give a fuck. I'm not a purist of any damn thing as far as I know and like this album so fuck you!

Awesome radio songs, awesome non-radio songs, 90s punk at its absolute best!

A requirement when learning the history of punk.

A punk rock classic from the late 1900s.

Ah, dookie. The soundtrack to my life right now. I mean no contest, this is a hell of an album. So good. I knew it before but came to love it very much when my uncle showed me how much he loves it too. It loud, energetic and optimistic. It shows how fucked up things are sometimes, but it is also completely cool about it. The songs reach from good to absolute bangers. And its jam-packed with absolute bangers. I'm also glad it's that short. Would it be longer it would be way too repetitive. But you can pop it in for half an hour and feel great afterwards. I love it. 5/5

I absolutely love this album. There isn't a song I don't like on here. There isn't any fluff in here, it's just great song after great song.

When I think 90s pop alt rock Dookie is always the first album that comes to mind. Still today it’s Green Day’s best and one of the best albums of the 90s.

common green day w, absolute banger after banger, was the perfect soundtrack for my teenage angst and obviously still holds up 💃

One of the great Pop-Punk albums ever made. Songs that seem juvenile on the surface but after a few listens you'll see there's more going on here than just wanking and getting stoned - but that's here too so at least it never takes itself too seriously. Best Tracks: Longview; Basket Case; When I Come Around

I've been avoiding this review because I'm not exactly sure what to say about Dookie. I came to the conclusion that I'll never be able to properly verbalize how I feel about this album so there's no point in trying so hard. While this isn't my favorite Green Day album (S/O 21st Century Breakdown) but it was one of the first albums that I listened to because of its history. I know it was the first album that my brother had to hide from my mom (back in the CD days lmao) and he passed it down to me. It was one of the albums that helped me appreciate punk music and through that, most other forms of music I listen to as an adult. Dookie changed music for me and apparently everyone else. The Led Zeppelin I of crappy punk rock. 5.

5 Was saving my review for this one until I could properly appreciate it. Every time I listen to this album, a wave of feelings comes over me with memories of high school, first love, summer nights, and most importantly, good times with good people. Sure, the album was already 20 years old when these memories were made, but great music is timeless, and even as this album approaches 30 years, it’s still my ultimate feel-good record. No record has ever quite captured the feeling of being young, dumb, reckless, lazy, and loving every minute of it like this one has for me (though Enema of the State is very close). It’s fun from front to back, and there’s not a single dull moment to be had in its 38 minute runtime - and yes, that includes All By Myself. Never has a band since The Ramones used the three power chord song structure so effectively, to the point where the music is so goddamn catchy you don’t even notice the simplicity of the structure. There’s not a ton of versatility, but it never once feels like any more is needed, it’s like you’re having the time of your life on a high-speed roller coaster without any signs of it slowing down. There’s probably a bit I could say about each individual song, but to avoid making this review too overly long, I’ll just say every song fits perfectly both within the confines of the album and on its own, and while I adore each and every one, She is my personal favorite (my #2 GD song of all-time after Whatsername on American Idiot). One of the best ever for me. The second I start it, I know I’m in for a great time. Whether you agree or disagree, I hope you all have an album that makes you feel the way this one does me.

Fun album! 👍

Hard to rate this aside from the memories and nostalgia. This hit big sophomore year of high school. This was a happy time of making new friends and finding out who I was and this music (along with a lot more) goes along with that. The music itself is pretty simple, but way more polished than pure punk. It’s fun, easy to listen to. But at the same time captures something more deeply meaningful. I’m attached to it and will love it forever.

The greatest pop punk record of all time. Full stop. 5 stars. What started with The Ramones in 1976 and evolved through the CA beach-side ecosystem of hardcore acts like The Descendents and Bad Religion in the 1980s, finally matured in the mid-90s with fresh CA acts like Green Day, The Offspring, and Blink-182. Yes, "matured." For in this era of pop punk, potty humor and songs about masturbation where as vital to these band's exploration of their humanity as were their explosive, catchy, angst-driven, marijuana-fused, riffs. Such humor was a direct way to point out the irony in so much overbearing bureaucracy and modernity in the American world. There was seriously a moment in the 90s where potty humor ruled only because there was an audience for it and people truly connected to that irony. It was all comedians like Adam Sandler and albums like Dookie. But Dookie, I'd argue, rises above the rest. It really capitalizes the angst, modern malaise, and suffocated frustration at the heart of such poo jokes. To "throw?" is to exercise some command over the uncommandable bodily functions that bind us to these bodies, this planet; an exercise in freewill. But more than that, it's a reminder to those bureaucrats, over-bearing parents, politicians, religious zealots, insurance salesmen, and corporate marketing systems that, "This stuff comes out of you too, you know. Don't act like it doesn't. We know it does. You had this coming." No other pop punk band before or after achieved such political and existential resonance with such "silly nonsense" as Green Day did here. The other thing that makes this record great is that it represents a watershed moment in the history of punk rock. This era of pop punk was incredibly short-lived in much the same way second-wave emo of the same mid-90s period was incredibly short-lived.* Those two genres, in part thanks to the success of this album and Green Day's career trajectory post Dookie—what with their "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)"s and their "American Idiot"s—were subsumed by the corporate machine of "Pop Punk" and "Emo" in the Hot Topic, Scene Kid era along with acts like Paramore, Panic! at the Disco, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Avril Lavigne, and so on. Dookie sits right on the fence of the moment that pop punk became more pop than punk. Musically, in the sense that these songs very much share a lineage with the earliest of the aforementioned pop-punk rockers but achieved radio viability in a way none of those artists ever had, and politically, in that this album very much maintains a punk ideology that, because of Dookie's success, was hereafter corpratized, sought after by record labels, and made more pop than punk. That moment would come to fruition, truly, with Blink-182's Enema of the State ("All the Small Things," "What's My Age Again?") five years later, but it begins here with Green Day's Dookie. So in summary, this is a great record of a short-lived era in which there aren't many records quite like it. And certainly none that dominated the radio waves quite the way this did. It's a watershed moment that would go on to change both punk and pop punk hugely in the 21st century, for better or for worse. And it's also just front-to-back full of great, catchy bangers. Songs that are simultaneously pleasant fun to shout along to, and that hold deep witticisms born of profoundly bored, horrifically dark, uncertain, anxiety-ridden, satirical, truly American, suburban places. I listen to it every month. *A scene that Green Day connects to via fellow SF act Jawbreaker. You can even hear a bit of second-wave, mid-west emo in Green Day—albeit tongue-in-cheek—via Dookie closer "All By Myself," which reminds me hugely of some Cap'n Jazz recordings.

Banger

Pretty solid, pretty pivotal record for the realm of pop punk

dookie hehe

This is the best album ever written. The best song on it is Longview. Alright, time to listen to the album several hundred times

Legendary stuff. Fav track: Welcome to Paradise

Every song is a banger. It was quick and easy to listen to.

https://youtu.be/_b8O_zfN_eE

Terrific album!!!

Straight from East Bay, California, a ragtag trio of snotty stoners records one of the pillars of pop punk. It’s full of adolescent angst and jagged guitars, and it captures its era perfectly.

Basically perfect, one of my favourite albums ever

Still a great listen start to finish.

Loved.

What a shot of nostalgia today's album was! I discovered Green Day with the release of their album Nimrod, then listened to a lot of their back catalog, and they quickly became one of my favourite bands in my teen years. Every song on this album is fantastic! Green Day is an amazing pop punk band. They were always featured on Much Music in the 90's and 00's so I became very familiar with their work. The songs were fast and loud, and the drums sounded amazing on this record. Basket Case is one of those songs you hear and immediately start singing, and the bass groove in Longview is so recognizable. Favourite songs: Basket Case, Longview, When I Come Around, Welcome to Paradise, Sassafras Roots, Burnout, Having a Blast Least favourite song: All By Myself (which is just a short nonsensical song added to the end of the album) 5/5

All-time favorite album. This was my introduction to being a teenager. I felt these were the coolest people on the planet. Punk to the core but appeals to the masses and it is executed perfectly. Great engineering, great musicianship, and still feels authentic. Sure, American Idiot is probably their best work (commercially, especially), but this still holds its own and half the album is still in rotation on rock radio stations and streaming playlists to this day. And for great reason. 5/5 no question.

I mean cmon. where it all started man. absolute rips front to back. no skip andy. love this album

All time classic

A classic.

Dookieee porraa!

So playful, colorful, and energetic. It's fast and memorable with domineering basslines and punchy drums. The muddled vocals really fit with their aesthetic and immature and childlike subject matter. It's 15 bangers in under 40 minutes, with the longest tracks being some of the biggest songs of the 90s, so the album really does fly by without any weak points. In the last third, only one song goes over 2 minutes and is arguably the best of the bunch. It also gets a million brownie points for being the first mainstream pop punk record, setting the stage for the explosion that would come at the end of the decade. With the sequence of Chump, Longview, and Welcome to Paradise, I almost thought this was a concept album. Of course, the 5 singles are everyone's favorites, but almost every other track is incredible. We have the opener "Burnout" setting up the themes, the jangly sunshine pop of "Pulling Teeth", and the skate punk "Emenius Sleepus" among other highlights make each track special. Only songs I didn't like much were "Sassafras Roots" and the bonus "All By Myself."

I was thrilled to see this album pop up - it was the first CD I bought myself, and it was the only album I could play straight through without skipping any tracks. It’s still incredible, and just looking at the cover art made me remember hours of studying the liner notes and scrubbed out lyrics included in the CD.

100% fire from start to finish. Best complete album of this experiment so far. I think this was the third CD I ever owned. Listened to it start to finish without skipping a track countless times, and it was amazing to do it again. I'm sure nostalgia plays big into this one, but can't deny how awesome this album is.

Incredibly fun album with great energy

i love it

Welcome to paradise, baby

Todo un disco que conjuga perfectamente rock y punk. Divertido de escuchar y con melodías muy auténticas

Finally the real man’s Green Day album. These songs sound so “Green Day” if that makes sense? This is the high water mark of this sort of sound.

Classic nice bit of f&@k it when working

wonderful memories from my teenage years

This was one of my top 5 albums as a teen

A classic from my younger years

Throwback to teenagehood

Classic middle school nostalgia

Fond memories of this album.

Great music, great lyrics, influential, still so relevant. Launched an absolutely incandescent band into their mainstream.

Absolutely legendary and iconic decade defining album. While not as ambitious and jam packed with mega hits as American Idiot later it, this is the formula that led to 2000s rock. A great run time with several radio pop punk hits that inspired everyone. The production is simple, yet raw and live, and you feel the tightness of the band that made them one of the best live bands ever.

One of the best pop punk albums

A pop punk masterstroke, a true demonstration of all killer and no filler. With sheer exuberance and ebullient charisma that blasts throughout, Dookie sees Green Day come to terms with their potential and its use to fill in a vaccum that was occupying the alternative scene. Every note was played perfectly and its positions were well crafted as some songs transitioned into another with ease. No wonder why Green Day took off with this era and career defining album, one of the best of the 90s.

Familiarity bias

Such a great album and I love that I got to see them live last year

takes me back to my childhood. What a record!

I love this album so much. A nostalgic punch that puts me in an immediately great mood. 5 stars forever!

This was the album that changed my mind about pop-punk. I always thought it was too silly and carefree and childish to the point of being annoying. And... well, I wasn't entirely wrong, but this album taught me how to enjoy that for what it was!

Iconic original Green Day, this is raw and rough. I think people have a pastime of shitting on Green Day for American Idiot era and beyond, but I think these roots point in the direction clearly, and nothing is wrong with that direction in my opinion.

Intense. Punk rock at it's finest. Groovy bass lines for days. Simple but effective guitar work. Never gets stale. Vocals perfect for the context they're in. Rude and kinda vulgar lyrics. Perfect. Already very familiar with the album but Pulling Teeth, F.O.D. and All By Myself really caught me by surprise. All By Myself really did a good job of leaving me wanting more at the end of the album.

J'ai failli être nostalgique du collège, c'est fort.

I remember seeing Green Day at the Red Dog Saloon in Santa Barbara, CA like a week after this album was released. Green Day was supposed to open for the Counting Crows but for some reason the Counting Crows cancelled and Green Day played at a smaller venue, to our benefit. They were fantastic (no thoughts of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at this point though). Nothing against the Counting Crows, I kind of liked them at the time (still do actually to some extent). This is the third Green Day album and first on a major label. That was a big deal at the time. The student poulation of UCSB was pretty much split 50/50 between Northern and Southern Cali and Green Day was a very big Bay area punk band. Lots of Green Day stickers on cars and VW vans (no kiddin) and tons of concern of them selling out. Selling out or not, this is one of the best punk-pop records ever. No. Not political. Not making a statement. Not changing the shape of music...well, maybe actually. This album still sounds great and rocks. At the core, songs with great melodies, a punk base and about being bored, masturation, anxiety, former girlfriends and going crazy. What else do you need? Really no bad songs. Most short and to the point. "Longview" was the first single and is an outstanding example of how to do the soft-loud-soft-loud dynamic. Take note Emo people. When I think of Green Day, I hear the opening lyrics of "Basket Case" for some reason. Maybe it is the most Green Day song they have. "When I Come Around" may be my favorite Green Day song just a great guitar chorus and vibe to this song. For some reason, you know Green Day is a great example of a band my generation (50's) and the current generation (teens/20's) both seem to like...a lot. And, it's not the later Green Day; it's songs from this album. There must be a reason for that.

I can only give this album 5 stars. The amount of teenagers this album was important to demands it. I was obsessed with this album ever since I first heard "Basket Case" as a homesick 12 year old in a new school. I saved up my pocket money and went and bought it from my local music shop. I had most of the lyrics memorised in a few weeks and when I took up the guitar I could play all the songs pretty quickly. I can remember the scrawling font of the lyrics in the cd booklet and examining the photos of the band which provided a glimpse into a world which is depicted so well in the music. Musically this album is simple but great, every song is catchy and tells a short story of part of life as a teenager. There is something special about this era of Green Day. Despite this being in the very broad genere of "Pop Punk" there is something really raw about the sound. It is certainly miles away from the sound of bands they are sometimes lumped in with like Blink 182, Sum 41 etc and I think are more commonly thought of as "Pop Punk". These bands were clearly influenced by Green Day and specifically Dookie but no one in 90s & 00s pop punk has ever managed to equal or top it. The sound and the lyrics are darker, cleverer and more evocative than anything else in that genre. Often when looking back at lyrics from this era you are sometimes left disappointed but this album stands up to that test. There is a feminist song ("She") inspired by a poem shown to Billie Joe by his then girlfriend. There is also a song about coming out as bi ("Coming Clean"). "Basketcase" is about Billie Joe struggling with his anxiety. It's just great, even 30 years on none of the lyrics have aged too badly and it still does a great job of evoking a world which can be escaped into for 40 minutes.

This is a four star album. It has amazing breakouts, fantastic b tracks and has an astounding energy that I love. It gets five stars because of the history I share with it.

One of those rare albums that is good cover to cover. Not a single throwaway song on here. And there are 15 songs. Sure, not every one is the pinnacle of musical ability and complexity but so what? Sometimes you got to give credit to musicians who can combine a reasonable level of instrumental, lyrical, musical, and harmonial ability plus energy to write catchy songs that flat out rock. I don't care for the criticism that they sullied punk. They are pioneers of new punk. Good for them. A classic, trailblazing album.

One my favs.

Amazing album! I loved this when it was released

This put me on a marathon of the next 3 albums. Absolute classic.

Another album that is impossible for me to be objective about

This is an album that we have a CD copy of so it's gotten a lot of airplay over the years. A lot of good tracks on here that make it a 5, a lot of mediocre tracks that bring it back to 4, but +1 for nostalgia.

Punk-rock. Sólo por Basket case ya se merece un 5...

so many hits

always cool

I'm biased and nostalgic. Its my damn rating so I m giving it a 5!

90s punk pop classic

4/25/22 I loved this album! Such a fun listen, and my heart will always be with punk rock and Green Day is such a classic. Already knew a few songs on the album and Basket Case is one of my favorite punk rock songs! The entire album could be the soundtrack of an amazing 90s movie which I love. Sure, many songs do sound very similar, but I like the sound so no problem with me! Favorite song: Basket Case

Pretty flawless pop punk

Great album, great energy. Favorite songs were the ones I already knew and loved, like When I Come Around and Basket Case (as well as Longview and Welcome to Paradise), but I especially liked the transition from Chump into Longview, which I hadn't heard before listening in singles style.

In my top 5 albums of all time. Incredible mixing on this thing. You can clearly hear each instruments part and they all get their own time to shine. From the opening bass line to She, to the drums that kick off Longview, to the iconic vocals in Basket Case that waste no time in firing you up. I’m a big pop punk guy but I can admit some albums in the genre have a tough time making each song feel different. This is not one of those albums

First album I ever bought and I was in sixth grade and I listened to this religiously everyday. Brought back some memories

This is the first album I thought of as ‘cool’. I remember when it came out none of my friends had it (we were 8) but their older siblings were huge into it. What a masterpiece. This is the ideal for pop punk and so many bands have been chasing this high since.

Heard this when it first dropped, always a great listen.

Classic

Nostalgia overload! Pop-punk at its finest. Helped me through many adolescent misadventures.

Another one that I grew up with. Defined a period of my life.

One of Green Day's best. Amazing older hits, lesser known tracks still rock. Great stuff.

F.O.D. We live in paradise and we don’t wanna go back home. Adolescent period, age 16, you’re in High School, stuff like skateboards, parties, drinks, chaos, love & hate are the most used adjectives. Mess, everything is under control out the way, throwing things all around the zone, people shouting, intensified when the rain starts, that makes any random situation sounds better than even Woodstock’s Events were someday. Fun never ends, youth is going to be one of the moments in your whole life, don’t mess up, hurry up, it passes, bring all those memories, summed up it’s the record title.

This shit still bangs.

I've always loved this album. I like every single song on it and always wanted to drum like this guy when I was a kid.

I live this album. Such good memories on so many fronts.

Amazing nostalgia

The nostalgia is strong with this one

Let the neo-punk revolution start.

u do not know how many times i have listened to this shi'

Love Dookie

Classic album. Takes me back.

What is there to write that hasn’t been written? The apex of its style and time and place.

Probably in my ten most listened to albums of all time. The album that led me to The Clash, The Descendents, Bad Religion etc.

One of my favorite albums of all time.. literally the first CD I ever bought.

I'm a basketcase

A classic. Fun to listen all the way through.

Punk-rock. Sólo por Basket case ya se merece un 5...

Having a Blast, Welcome to Paradise, When I Come Around. ¡Fantástico!

This album pretty much defined middle school for me. Still holds up.

You already know

Pop punk until I die, bitches. I am the exact perfect age to love Green Day, and I really do. I first heard American Idiot, so it took my a while to work my way back to Dookie. This album has so many great tracks on it, and is full of a great energy. Makes me feel like I'm in high school again in a good way.

Great album, their best one yet, one of my all time favorites

Openly biased. Green Day 4 LYFE

Great albumn

My music roots trace back to pop punk. This just has to be a 5

First punk album bought after buying the Welcome to Paradise single on tape from the Merry Hill branch of Our Price in 1994!

I mean.... I'll listen but dont really need to. Holds up incredibly well.

dookie by green day. 9/10.

Great Album, I own on vinyl :)

Dookie!

Not a genre I listen to often but I loved it... would listen again

Classic.

Classic and fun pop punk!

I think one of the two most formative albums of my youth.

Soundtrack to my child hood. a punk meets world album.

Classic punk Green Day. I looove this album.

Great album!

Still holds up after all these years

Took me back to my childhood. Alot of hits on one album.

Great album. This was my first exposure to Green Day. This a great album full of hits. ("Longview", "welcome to paradise", "basket case"). Essential Green Day and a great album to start into them as well(even if you're just looking for some good punk rock, this is a great place to find it.

Great album in the history of punk and pop punk.

Brings me back

Classic childhood fav!

Such a great "first" album here. Love the sound and it's nuts to think that Billy Joe and his band have been kicking ass since 1989.

Full of energy.

Soo many memories...

✸ Longview is still a banger. ✸ More pencil-crayon album covers, please. ✸ Basket Case awakening my sense memory: I'm a pre-teen being driven around in the family car while listening to 102.1 The Edge. ✸ I'm realizing how fried my attention span is when I find myself wanting to skip a 2 min long song, instead of sitting through it. ✸ When I Come Around!! ✸ I was 4 years old when this album was released.

A nice come down from the gauntlet yesterday. The epitome of pop punk, although my personal favorite pop punk record is Enema of the State. A handful of modern classics and goofy, immature 2-3 minute bangers that just sound good. So much better than political Green Day.

Bancoo, pensé que solo me iba a gustar "Basket Case", pero me gustó el estilo del disco, muy movido y con mucha guitarra, pero las letras se entienden. Lo volvería a escuchar, aunque me interesa más escuchar otras cosas de la banda.

Hit or miss.

This was in my regular rotation as a teen in the mid-90s. I don’t listen to it much anymore as my tastes have changed quite a bit since then, but I can still sing along to most of the album. Some of the songs start sounding very similar, which is the only thing keeping this from being a 5 for me.

who hasn't heard of green day at this point? my dad has owned this cd physically for years. the third and one of the first big releases from the band, recorded in only a few weeks. it's currently the best selling album from green day. fast, fierce punk rock, written by a very young billie joe armstrong. fun fact, the original title for the album was "liquid dookie". this is punk rock, or rather pop punk rock. like a few past albums i've listened to, probably the best thing about this album is its consistency. green day has some of the catchiest rock songs ever written, truly some big anthems that anyone, young and old would want to get together and sing along with. consistency is a great thing, but as the cd plays on, i WILL admit that the songs do start to blend in with one another. this album is great! but i feel like it could have less tracks. some of the final tracks are only like one minute thirty or around two minutes long. this album is very nostalgic for a lot of people and i agree with those sentiments. if more specific ratings were a thing on here, i'd wanna give this a 4.2.

I really like the intro, just throws you right in with no buildup. Really solid album I love the vibes. It gives me Tony Hawk pro skater vibes for some reason, specifically from the PS2, but I love it.

Hella fun. Basket Case - She - Sassafras Roots makes such a good three song run. Billie Joe Armstrong has the most iconic voice.

I liked it! Basket Case is my fave, didn't know Armstrong was bi. I also love the album cover. Album reminds me of the beauty of being young

Classic album and a personal fav! own it on cd! It honestly reminds me of my ex and of good times.

This was a nice surprise, I've never was a huge fan of Green Day, and their overplayed hits got old two decades ago. But listening to those same hits in context of the album they were on makes them shine more. Billy Joe's guitar tone is killer, but Dirnt's basslines are what carries these guys.

Bio bi najdosadniji album s gomilom identičnih pjesama da nije mojih voljenih Longview i When I Come Around. Zbog njih ipak bolji utisak.

Liked this on release. Still like it now.

!!! Basket Case alone could warrant five stars but I’ll control myself.

holds up almost as well as when it was initially released. There is something timeless about Billy Joes voice

Dookie was a great listen. Enjoyed the drumming. Definitely a punk rock classic.

4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/green-day/dookie/ Due to being 2 years old when this was released, my introduction to Green Day was with American Idiot (which I also expect will pass by in the list?). I've listened to Dookie ever since, but not very often, aside from the main hits (that slap!). I should've; this is nice! Doesn't reach American Idiot levels for me (yet), but that's mainly due to nostalgia.

Excellent album, love the fiery lyrics, an Easy 4 Star album

Didn’t like them when they broke out but grew to like them. There is a bit of filler here but the highs are very high. Not as consistent as Offspring’s Smash or Rancid’s …And Out Come the Wolves

Variety isn't bad for punk. Pretty decent for what it is

J'ai bien aimé, j'ai même ajouté un titre, mais c'est pas un coup de foudre

I don’t think I’ve ever listened to this whole album, I had some thoughts on better sequencing but beyond that super enjoyable. Very strong major label debut

Its not the most perfect punk album but damn does it come close. i would have gave it a 5/5 but im not 15 anymore. which does not mean i hate this album or punk, quite the opposite but i have since grown to appreciate what this album did at the time and really shows how strong green day was before they kinda fell off for me. ill never not love welcome to paradise.......

Memories

DO YOU HAVE THE TIME that’s the only song i recognised and my main takeaway from listen to this album was holy shit that is one strong american accent. that being said I did enjoy it, reminds be of early Panic! albums, which were probably inspired by this i imagine

Knew and liked a few of the songs, discovered a few more that I like!

Klassieker

Sterke vocal harmonies, aanstekelijke reffreintjes. Snel en leuk.

Nice album, more familiar with American idiot

Another low 4 due to preponderance of very good songs amidst pop-punk filler

Pretty good for what it is.

Listened to it a couple of times to confirm it wasn't a 5

Make a donation to donate@924gilman.org for Alternative Music Foundation if you like this as much as I do, you bloody bollocks!

322/1089 this type of skater punk pop rock is pretty fun to listen to, some bits sound quite folky which i like. i also like that the tracks are pretty fast paced, there’s a good amount of tracks that are around 2mins spread throughout so the album doesn’t drag too much faves: Longview, Emenius Sleepus, Basket Case, Welcome to Paradise 75/100

Listening session: june 3rd, while mealprepping Listened to before: listened to this album a few times before Thoughts: this album makes me feel like I’m in a 90s teen movie in a good way Favourite tracks: Longview, Welcome to Paradise & Basket Case

In the beginning I thought well that not really 100% what I like. The lyrics and their topics got me. Some of those songs will make it to my list of favourites.

Listens: 2.5 Standout Tracks: Longview, Welcome To Paradise, When I Come Around For me, this is one of those albums where the singles are excellent, and really do a lot of the heavy lifting on the album, but the rest of the album sort of fades into the background. I want to like the album more than I actually do. Despite what the description says, I never considered this to be "punk" music growing up; its just got way too much mainstream appeal and its way to melodic and pop-y. That was obviously the goal, though (financially). This album, and perhaps Green Day functions as a nexus point between a bunch of genres: Punk, Grunge, classic rock, and what came after it: 2000s Pop, Emo, "Goth", Ska, Post-grunge, Nu-metal, and post-hardcore. I grew up in the 90s and 2000s and this deluge of musical genres was nigh unavoidable, even if you weren't really into any of it. I dabbled in Ska and Nu-metal, but mostly stayed comfortably under the "alternative rock" umbrella. It wasn't until later that I got into some of the aforementioned genres, but even still, I really don't "do" Emo and Goth music. It all feels quite whiny and thin. But I digress; I think this is a perfectly fine album. I don't think it's something that will enter my rotation, but I recognize its cultural importance. I also always thought that Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) was on this album, but it is, in fact, not.

Classic 90's pop punk. 14 tracks rattle by. All with single potential.

A seminal pop punk album, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't already over them by 18 or 19. Even so, this has got hits that still hit and the other stuff also rocks. Not too sure about that last track where it sounds like Billie Joe is trying to sound developmentally disabled.

Let me be me bro

Awesome album by the Green Day - couple classics right there.

Solid! Throwback to my childhood. Grateful that it's on this list,, and I listened to it again after many years.

No nonsense brilliant us slacker punk pop.

The argument around Green Day's punk credentials obscured the fact that Dookie is one of the great guitar pop albums of the 90s. Every song is a winner, from the snare hits opening "Burnout" through to the gear shifting "F.O.D". Sure it's very much a teenager's album in a lot of ways, and as a teenager at the time, this was massive, not only as a gateway to punk, but also as one of the most replayable pop albums I'd heard. In context too it was an important release to all of the darkness that grunge brought - it was released less than a couple of months before Kurt died, so by the time it hit my radar it was sorely needed. It's not an album that I find myself reaching for as an older and maybe more jaded middle aged guy, but it's still undeniable as a classic 90s album.

Perfect

no notes!!! Rager!!! 8/10

Takes me back, great listen.

Although you can hear a more radio-ready mix and mastering in terms of the actual sound, not a lot changed in Green Day's songwriting from Kerplunk to Dookie all things considered. My point is you'd be hard-pressed to spot the differences with this jump to the majors except for the elephant in the room which is the giant corporate machine now behind them. I get the whole narrative about scene betrayal and have been down the road with bands I supported before they grabbed the brass ring, etc. Certainly not discounting all of that but I do think it's remarkable how consistent these two records are when you get down to it. True heads may question anything post John Kiffmeyer out / Tré Cool in, you can always say that "they sold out earlier", but this begins to feel like a flavor of the No True Scotsman fallacy. Anyway, what are we doing here with this review? You probably already have feelings about Dookie and you might even know what it sounds like. It was one of the biggest albums of the 90s and helped (re)launch the commercial viability of the pop-punk genre — and everyone poops after all.

Dookie can be hard album to evaluate. It's sort of a monumental landmark album, but not quite in musical sense as much as cultural one. There's nothing particularly unique or special about green day and yet this album has a specific sound that never quite gets duplicated when people try. Perhaps it's the partcular influences these guys bring in, their lineage coming out of bay area punk comes through loud and clear, but they are clearly poppier and more radio friendly than a lot of those bands. Maybe it's just that these three guys have a really natural interplay on a musical level. Whatever the reason, this album blew Green Day up beyond belief. They became a cultural force that could never really go away, for better or worse. They headlined Coachella in 2024, they played before the super bowl on national television this year. There's a marvel that this album is what launched all that into even being a remote possibility. Before this they were a bunch of young punks from SF that Reprise took on shot on trying to find the next big rock band now that grunge seemed to have run its course. There's a lot to be said about Green Day and what they became. Their journey from being countercultural weirdos to being one of the handful of the biggest acts on the planet. These days they aren't really countercultural anymore, the more the default band for the guy "doesn't like what's on the radio." They make constant political statements, but they aren't actually radical. They play alternative music, but they fill stadiums. 32 years after the dookie dropped, they have been fully subsumed by culture. It's fascinating to keep that in mind when you listen to this record. Is that story a triumph or a tragedy? ultimately is depends on your individual views, but I think that certainly makes this an essential listen, if only to see where the tide shifted.

I’ve always seen this album around but never listened to it all the way through until now. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Everything the youth of the 90’s loved about Alternative Music is embedded in this album: the angst without feeling corny or forced, catchy lyrics, some humor, and a great showcase of chaotic (in the best way) drums

This has some great ones. Lots of nostalgia.

Ok, I think I actually have come around now that Dookie has been generated; I enjoyed this so much more than American Idiot. It’s still pop punk, they have a ton of pop sensibilities, but there’s still some edge here and a lot of creative approaches to these songs. In particular, I really enjoyed the bass playing throughout; a lot of simple, but hooky bass lines.

Green Day was inescapable in late high school, and yet I was never much of a fan nor had I listened to a whole album before this list. This is pretty great although not as great as American Idiot.

The thing is, this IS a great album. Had Green Day never gone mainstream, this still would have been right up there with all the best pop-punk albums from that time. Is it the defining pop punk album of the mid-90s? Probably not. Does it deserve a spot on the 1001 list? Probably not. Anyway, it's a great listen, and I'm glad they're still going strong after all these years.

I had only listened to American Idiot prior (in full) - a more ambitious project than Dookie for sure. I really like the bridge in Welcome to Paradise.

Reminded me fondly of my youth. Being 14, loving skateboarding and getting mix tape CD's from my mate introducing me to all sorts of new bands.

THE quintessential pop punk album. Not my favorite by Green Day, but it is in my opinion the most approachable and cohesive album from their raw era. Fav track: Pulling Teeth

Shermz: yessss finally an album ive actually heard before. Remind me to sing during the next K bby :) Wenz: hahah, I have not heard about this album before… but quite good. I will remind you to sing during Karaoke 😆

I love this album but I grew up with it so I'm biased

Still holds up after 30 years, albeit a little less impressive than it was hearing it as an angsty pre-teen. The key is the production, which somehow captures all three distinctly while blasting you in the face, something others tried to replicate but never really could. Still, it's all a bit of the same, and so it thrives on nostalgia more than true greatness.

Excellent pop punk from a band that made a lot of not-excellent stuff after. Green Day isn't in my top few bands of the genre, but with their popularity, Dookie is easy to point to as one of the best examples of the genre. When I Come Around, Basket Case, Longview, Welcome to Paradise, you never go too long in this album without a reminder of how these three were just tapping into something.

I can't explain why I don't like most punk music but I love Green Day. Their debut album Dookie is so good. I love the way the songs flow into one another and tell the story of a drugged up deadbeat. Big fan, classic Green Day.

Classic for a reason, love Green Day, but would choose another of their albums over this one, hence 4 stars.

Great album with a few classics.

THE quintessential pop punk album. Not my favorite by Green Day, but it is in my opinion the most approachable and cohesive album from their raw era. Fav track: Pulling Teeth

Fantastic album again. Iconic, influential, and just great songs. Some stuff I'd forgotten about on here.

FINALLY a punk album that I don't hate!

Quite a fun record. Infectious melodies and hard driving tunes keep it moving at a good pace. There’s a youthful naïveté comes through that’s easy to like. 4

fun and catchy. much prefer this to american idiot

Solid album. I was always a fan of the singles but never gave the full album its due mostly because of Billy Joe's future personality. I see why they are well regarded as they are.

I always resented Green Day. Coming up at this time I was down with pop punk with Offspring, Lagwagon, NoFX, etc but this band seemed like it was blessed by the gods of radio/MTV undeservedly. Tres Cool is a legend regardless.

This album is one that opened the door to music for me. It's probably a big part of why I learned an instrument and joined bands. Teenage me poured over every aspect of it. It's basically a musical comfort blanket and today has been a massive nostalgia trip. Good times.

Geiler Punk Rock! Nicht das beste Album aber schon sehr gut.

It's not my favorite Green Day album, however, it's still a Green Day album, soooooooo ... 4 stars

Me alegro el día

pop rock, not that interesting but some godd standalone tracks

Tails off at the end, but a classic album all in all

Haven't listened to this in ages. Really like early Greenday. Longview is catchy.

Listened to some Green Day years ago. But never explored them much beyond their hits. It’s a very 90s punk sound that feels more classic now. I guess that makes sense since it’s 30 years old. The non single songs kind of have a generic quality to them, but the hit songs are really fun and good. Kind of a weird album. It’s like yeah Green Day is fine and all, but doesn’t seem like anything special. Longview is better than anything else on the front of the album. Is it just familiarity? I enjoy the slowed down style on Pulling Teeth. I might have spoke too soon. After a few forgettable tracks to it’s full of good songs from Longview on until at least When I Come Around. Actually ended up enjoying way more than I thought. It’s definitely really good at its best and just okay sometimes. But feels like a 4. It surprisingly holds up well.

Sorpresivamente espectacular. No me llamaba mucho la atención grindei pero he gozado

Sounds like how a teenager's bedroom smells. Pop punk 101

i actually listened to this one unconsciously its one of my sisters favorite albums and i was basically forced to listen to it sp yeah its ok not rlly my type but some songs still hold a place in my hearr

oh i’ve heard this hundreds of times as a teenager. love the bit between chump and longview, endlessly cool. i LOVE longview. as a bass player, it’s so cool. i remember these songs being longer. not in a bad way, just didn’t realize they were so short.

There was certainly a sound in the early 90s

gut halt, kennt man, hört sich nur wieder alles ähnlich an

Like if my favorite pony did its best trick for me :) can’t believe i never listened to this album! Bangerthon! Important

Amazing debut album that kicked off an entire resurgence of punk. Chocked full of hooks and great riffs

I had my Green Day phase and it's good to revisit that. It's nostalgic with good catchy songs. Good pick, will be back to the album when I wish to go back to that younger self that listened to this.

It's energetic and cool with great bangers. A pretty solid record. Favorite Songs: Longview ; Basket Case

Maybe it's the 90s teen nostalgia (a friend at school copied this album on cassette for me) but I think I might like Dookie more now than I did at the time. It's a tad same-y, but there's less filler than I remembered.

if 13 year old me was rating this it would be an instant 5 but unfortunately i have aged since then

A couple of good songs, but not their best. 3.5

I did not know Green Day was such a fun band 30 years ago and I did not know Basket Case is their song. Perfect for Friday!

Never really been into pop punk but this was good

Its a classic!

punk. catchy. fun. 90s.

ugh... I want to rate this a 5 soooo bad it's like a 4.75 though so it gets a 4. One of the first "punk" groups I listened to as a young man.

Hard to understate how prominent this album was in the mid-90s

It has Basket Case soooo uhhhhhhh...

So Green day is my guiltiest of pleasures I'm not gonna lie, so ofc I enjoyed this. The suprising thing here is that Billie Joe Armstrong really hasn't changed his singing style all that much in 30 years, and I think considering how much I enjoyed this versus anything of their recent work is proof that pop-punk lives and dies on its attitude. It's the kind of rage-at-nothing-and-everything nihilistic screed that comes around from the brainrot of the trashiest side of suburbia that might absolutely turn me off elsewhere, but here I think it works. Longview is a great example of that maddening boredom in action (or rather inaction). I'm suprised Green Day hasn't become a calling card for chuds and incels (besides their very most popular songs), and I think that's half in part due to their open political stances but also a kind of self awareness that the lifestyle they're portraying deeply sucks. That self awareness is the key to all this balancing out for me. It's very much the 90s musical version of Catcher in the Rye (even down to the reference of paying a sex worker just so you can talk to them about your feelings), and like the Catcher in the Rye its going to be divisive for that. But I like Catcher in the Rye, and I also like this album. It's a high 4, I think as a full album experience it does run out of things to say towards the last half.

Excellent Punk album

Never been a huge Green Day fan but I did enjoy this

Not necessarily my favourite style of music, but I do appreciate its influence (so many of these songs are staples for young kids when they are first starting in bands) and some of the songs have achieved classic status.

i like it. i assume that some people think it gets repetitive, but i really like the sound even if it is.

Green Day has always been a frustrating band for me. I really like their punk and a lot of their pop-punk, but they occasionally put out some pop rock which I find very annoying. Fortunately, this album has more of the first two elements and only moderate elements of the third.

Billy Joe freakin' Armstrong. So much energy. Hard to comment on this musically, because it feels like a lotta powerchords and its not subtle at all. If i knew more about the history of this kinda music, it could be a 5 (cultural impact points). It's a solid, solid 4.

johnny test music

Classic album from my college days. Oddly one of these songs was stuck in my head when I woke up today and then I got this album in my queue
