Reviews (page 9 of 14)
This is the first time I’ve intentionally listened to Kanye. And yep not my thing. Sounds like any other main stream rap album except nothing really grabbed me.
The College Dropout is clearly a high-quality and influential album, and I even recognized “All Falls Down”. Still, hip-hop doesn’t really connect with me, and I tend to let the slower, groove-based tracks pass in the background.
An enjoyable listen that drags on the final track with Kanye telling a story over the beat on the end track. The skits are funny, but would be irritating on repeat listening.
This is my second Kanye West album. As usual, Kanye West is a very controversial figure. This album isn't as good as the previous one I got, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. This was an okay album to listen to, but nothing amazing.
Questionable man solid album
album #10 incredibly produced! some real bangers on here. i had never listened to this album before, and i can understand why it was on the list. it's a real shame that he made an album with some real lyrical gems only to turn around and become a nazi. boo you! favourite track(s): the new workout plan, family business least favourite track(s): two words number of albums left to review: 1,079 number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 4 albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 1 albums from the list I won't include on my list: 9
There was far more on here that I recognised than I expected, and musically at least, there’s a lot to like. But he’s still a self-aggrandising cockwomble who vastly overestimates his own brilliance.
"Jesus Walks" is pretty cool, but, for me, there's a pretty steep drop-off, after that. I guess the words are kind of interesting as poetry/theater/story-telling, but musically a close call between 2 and 3 stars. But I'll raise it to 3 overall for "Jesus Walks" plus the words (and a few Chi-town shout-outs don't hurt, either, lol). The "Spirit" songs, btw build off a great (duh) Aretha Franklin song, "Spirit in the Dark" (which I'd rather listen to than anything on this album).
i really gotta actively listen when i get a hip hop album bc it’s way more enjoyable when i can actually understand the lyrics
Musically not that interesting - not something I would put on regularly. There is an endearing element to the lyrics in spots. Props for being a debut album but my interest ends there. 3/5
Not in my edition of the book! 2004. 3 stars. As a musical experience, there is a lot to like here, despite it being a rap album - he moves effortlessly from style to style, has sharp lyrics and production, and a sense of humour. Set against it are excessive length and filler. You can see why he got the kudos at the time. As rating for West as a person: 0 stars. No time for Nazis.
A debate for the modern age: can you separate the art from the artist? To argue for "yes," art is its own independent thing. It has a life of its own, outside of the individuals or team that created it. It represents history. It represents those who love the art and hate the art. Its story is completely independent of its artist, yet the artist is quintessential to its story. Art can be defined by its technical skill. A painting is realistic. A musical is performed well. Art can be defined by its impact to culture. To argue for "no," we live in a digital age. By listening to this album on Spotify Premium, I am giving tiny amounts of money to the artist. The artist can then use the money to continue to live their lives as they choose, without my consent or contribution. By listening to this album willingly, you could argue that I support Kanye West. That I can be associated with him, as one of his "listeners." That title comes with baggage, because Kanye is not a good person, and it is important to me that I am one. I don't know what the right answer is. It's a good album. Maybe even a great album. But to boil down its nuisances into a 1-5 star rating is impossible.
Gran disco! Buen disco
You really can’t go wrong with old Kanye. Hate the man but he did make some good music in the past. Definitely prefer some songs over others but wouldn’t say any are “bad” necessarily. I think the last half of the album is stronger and more my taste. 7/10 for the art but -10000/10 for the artist.
Good in the gym.
i don't really know what's going on here, to be perfectly honest. the beats are consistently pretty good, vocals and production are mostly good, and best as i can tell the lyrics are absolutely all over the place. it careens from political commentary to regulation issue misogyny to daily life to out-of-pocket ableism to weird religious screeds? completely unpredictable.
I’ve never really connected with Kanye. I’ve listened to several of his albums, including this one, and while I can’t deny he’s an immensely talented and influential songwriter, rapper, and producer, his music doesn’t resonate with me much. That said, there are still several great songs on this album
3.5
It’s a great album, didn’t love the skits in between songs. In light of recent Kanye events I think a 3 is warranted
Fav part were the interludes (I don’t know if that’s what they’re technically called) and Get Em High
Overall Rating - 2.65/5 (5.31/10). Not a fan of the style, but I have to admit that, before he went completely insane, he was pretty good at this.
I enjoyed the first half more than the second - overall a decent debut, if this young man can work on his stamina then I have a feeling things are looking up.
Oh no, I think I liked this. It's definitely a trillion times less obnoxious than his later work, while still retaining his excellent vocal delivery. Usual rap complaints - too long, stupid skits, general uneasiness over the lyrical content - but it was a decent listen.
I always try to separate the artist from the art. Not a fan of either. Considering I'm not a fan of the genre it was not all that bad though 5/10
0/21 bekannt 6/10 Beste Songs: spaceship, the new workout plan, never let me down Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass dieses Album lustig sein könnte und die Musik triff mehr meinem Geschmack als ich erwartet hatte.
I can see how this was influential. It wasn't bad. Some parts I didn't like, but most of it was easy listening. I won't listen again, mainly because I just don't want to listen to Kanye.
Never listened to it when it was out. I guess I get the hype around it. Shame it went to his head. 3 - deserves to be on this list
Ugh, it pained me to listen to Kanye but I forced myself to at least skim through. Hate to admit that some of this actually had a catchy beat. I could do without the random tracks of people speaking.
Firstly, the glaring hypocrisy of several of the top reviews for this album is shocking. Sure, Kanye West is an anti-Semite, but I don’t see the same level of criticism being levelled at any of the several Pink Floyd albums on this list. To the album. It’s certainly different from the majority of rap released at the same time, which I suppose increased its popularity. The use of autotune isn’t great, but so goes the times. Personally, I’m a fan of Graduation and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy over College Drop Out as the interludes, something which pervades rap/hip-hop more than any other genre, are gone by then and the tracks are grander and more accomplished. Overall, it’s one of the better hip-hop/rap albums in the list, but not one I would chose to listen to again.
Long record but memorable songs
Love a smooth rap over a soul beat. Rhyming over a classic album traces all the way back to the origins of rap and this is a great tribute to that while also pushing every aspect of it into modernity. The through line of Kanye being the smart one for dropping out of college is a bit cringe inducing. Too many skits is always cringe inducing on a hip hop album. Kanye is great at coming at a theme from a lot of original angles and making a compelling narrative out of his tracks, although his technical ability is only middle of the road. Good flow, but only ok rhyme and meter. Probably because at this point in his career most of his experience is as a producer and not a performer. Would re-buy, although I've owned and listened to this album for many years :)
Likes: Hooky samples; solid features; good puns and topical lyrics Dislikes: production style is a little maximalist and overwhelming for my taste; I prefer the feature rappers to Kanye stylistically in most cases Overall, a solid record for what it is, but not a sonic aesthetic that speaks to me. It’s also hard to come at it fresh when we know how off the rails this dude is gonna go.
Lost a star because of who he is as a human. Lost another star for talking shit about being a lifelong learner 😂
Enjoyed. But not so much as last KW album.
Like Kanye’s beats but not his delivery
My second Kanye album on this journey (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy), and happy to see it cause at the very least I know it’ll be entertaining. Kanye is ever the artist and I appreciated the various themes explored throughout the album. The New Workout Plan was particularly funny to me. Also in reading and learning more about the album I have to say “chipmunk soul” is a new term for me. But again, entertaining with the skits throughout. Overall this was an album I could appreciate, but probably won’t listen to again outside of the singles.
I cam here for the anti-Semitism but there was none :(
This has to be one of the most complicated listens out there. You have to deal with his abhorrent behavior, his mental illness, the other people involved in the album who aren’t awful, the impact this had on hip hop at the time, any personal past you have with his music… it’s a lot.
Honestly, at half the length it would have been a corker.
If I couldn't separate art of from artist, I wouldn't like anything. I hate to admit it for all the obvious reasons, but this is a pretty great record. It set a few horrible trends though, like the chipmunk samples. The skits are fucking stupid, too. I pirated this whole thing so that not even a $0.01/stream would go into the man's pockets, though.
Feels surprisingly simple and dated. I guess it is pretty old now. Tried my hardest to not have it tinged by what an insane, terrible person Kanye turned out to be

Good music, too bad Kanye isn’t really my taste
My feelings about Kanye are complicated. I can’t bring myself to decry or boycott his earlier music because it’s like he was a different person. This has never been my favorite album of his, but it still has some really good songs. It is bizarre in 2026 to hear him so proudly having a conscience - “Jesus Walks” still hits, for instance.
First steps del hip hop rarito? Its not my vibe pero me gusta. Buenos sampleos, buen flavour. Well. im getting along with it. Me gusta al final, está bien. Likes: We dont care - Graduation Day - Slow Jamz - Through the Wire -
En oo ikinä ollu skittien ystävä mut tuolla oli kyllä kovaa räppiäkin välissä.
This album is strange to me because it feels like something I should love but for some reason there is a disconnect. I think it’s a very creative album but for some reason it just doesn’t click with me the way I want. I will say the production is of course excellent and has so much personality and at this stage in his career he still is very charming. But not enough for me to ever return intentionally.
I enjoyed this, but it didn’t leave a real lasting impression (other than that some of it aged like milk lmao). Perhaps my love if mbdtf really is rooted in nostalgia.
Some catchy tunes.
I cannot bring myself to listen to this album again objectively in the year 2026 considering Kanye’s gone full MAGA so my rating is based on my memories of being forced to listen to this album through the wall of my brother’s bedroom over and over again in high school back when it was still relatively new.
Better than gangsta rap. Some ok tunes and good variety of music. Goes on a bit, though. What's with hip hop and middle school quality skits on albums?
Well this is certainly one to spark the "art vrs. The artist" debate... The Art: This album actually surprised me a bit, it's much more poppy and eclectic that I expected. I think Kanye West undeniably has a talent at creating ear wormy, eccentric, pop music and incorporates so much diverse and different influences. I think that niche is also pretty hard to play well too. I fall short at tossing around the world genius for sure but there is some pretty interesting creativity. The Artist: Kanye West has demonstrated some pretty horrible public behavior. I do think he has manipulated his public image intentionally to sell music, but crossed a line that does challenge the limits of free speech, and honestly just wish he would stop and go away. The verdict: I am tempted to let my feelings on the artist impact my scoring of the album but I will fight this temptation, and rate this one off musical merit alone - acknowledging it still probably created a bias on how I feel about this album regardless.
i HATE that i liked this so much..... insane that this is a debut so LONG and so GOOD, but whatever its gorgeous inspiring, it has some lines that i hate but the instrumental and the rap on it its beautiful. I LOVED the storytelling and the voices of the girlies around the album.. that ending was too long girl im sorry loved this recommendation uish
I don’t like Kanye but a couple songs on this were aight if you separate it from him , kinda hard to tho
Very listenable for hip-hop. I can understand why it received rave reviews. It's a shame it all went to Kanye's head. He needs help not derision.
There’s a great album in here. But it’s adulterated in slop. The first 8 tracks, Through the Wire, and Family Business are super impressive. I would give these a 4/5 standing alone. But sandwiched in between and wrapping it all up is a full album’s worth of “Money, rims, and ho's again” alternating with, “education wasn’t for me so it must be a worthless scam” screed. Track after track of droll hip hop ego projection; each track revealing another layer of his insecurity. And yes, he’s more clever (and less stable) than your average narcissist, but I still feel like I’m stuck sitting next to my Brother-in-Law at Thanksgiving; just listening to a scared little man barking at how smart and important he wants me to believe him to be. These are a 1/2.
we dont care, new workout plan, სქულ სფირითები მომეწონა two words, last call.
eh... great samples, terrible person. Last thing I wanted to hear was him yapping for 12 minutes straight.
Started off really strong but around the half way point it all started to sound very samey, and it went on for way too long, especially Last Call which at 12 minutes really needed to do something other than loop the same 4 bars for the whole track.
Some good songs, but primarily had a bad time with this one.
I’ve already listened to Kanye for this list once, but I hadn’t heard that one before. This one I’ve heard before so I can’t in good conscience give Ye any more money from streaming. This album deserves 5/5, Kanye deserves 1/5, so I’m gonna say 3/5.
Good album. A shame about the Nazism.
I like a bit of early Kanye but this is probably my least Favourite of his Education trilogy - not really into the chipmunk Soul styie while this one leans most heavily on.
6 This guys a total doofus u know
Longest album we’ve listened to on this. I’m unsure I like a skit based album as I don’t think it adds anything. I don’t think it does here either. Lots of pop culture significant songs on this album and I can understand its appeal. But it feels dated to me.
Seven tracks are skits. *Seven*. Only six minutes of the album, collectively, but those minutes are a drag. The exception is Graduation Day, which is actually pretty strong apart from the autotune falsetto, which is generally agreed to be one of the worst sonic elements to emerge from modern pop. Last Call is also a waste of time – almost 13 minutes of it – and reaffirms that prog-length tracks do not work in this genre. Also not a big fan of Kanye's rapping, since it lacks melody and hence is difficult to catch onto or want to return to for subsequent listens. To his credit, though, his voice is generally distinct from contemporaries' – which is surely a big part of his success. Judging by streaming numbers (on this album and elsewhere), it's clear that the catchier, more melodic tracks are the ones getting more traction. I wish more hip-hop/R&B artists would realise this. We Don't Care is a great introduction to the Ye-sphere. For your first full-length track on a record, you want something that's punchy and groovy with meaningful lyrics. This song checks those boxes and more. All Falls Down carries the torch further, incorporating some other excellent elements, like Johnson's soulful accompanying vocal, a dynamic bassline, and acoustic guitar. Especially the latter. Guitars are conspicuously absent from a lot of hip-hop leading up to this point, and that's a woeful truth. Never Let Me Down manages to be better than the entire Bowie record of the same name. The New Workout Plan is a bit disappointing: it has all the elements of a great track (including some really cool production on the vocals and percussion), except for catchiness. Which is the single most important element. Through The Wire and Family Business are two good tracks towards the end – particularly the former, which is maybe the poppiest Kanye gets on the record. 3/5 Key tracks: All Falls Down, Slow Jamz, Through The Wire
Paints a picture of a world that I've never seen - eye opening but ultimately depressing. Glad I listened to it at least once but not sokething to come back to.
I was wondering when I’d get hit with my first “art versus the artist” type conundrums in this project. My philosophy on the whole matter is that the art isn’t objectively changing. The only thing that changes is me, the listener. Every listen to an album may hit me in a different way from the other listens, but only because I am bringing something new to the equation. All the album can ever bring is itself, and all the bleeps and bloops always come in the exact same order as ever. So, on any given listen, thoughts or feelings about the artist may or may not be a factor, and it’s totally valid either way. So for this particular listen of The College Dropout, I would say the artist was a factor, but only a minor one. A lot of tracks slap pretty hard, and some not so much, but generally a decent album. A bit overrated imo, but I thought that long before ‘Ye’s entire existence went in the toilet.
Kanye defined the sound of rap music and popular music for like 20 years, first as a producer, then as a tastemaker. His production for Jay-Z and others was legendary, and The College Dropout concretized his fame when his unique voice somehow hit the zeitgeist. That he’s not a very good lyricist is almost (almost) beside the point. From here he released an unbroken string of 8 masterful albums, each better than the last, each bending the industry in his direction and inspiring numerous, less inspired, copycats. And now it’s all way less fun and way more messy, and it’s getting harder to objectively listen to it. I can still get there with the albums that most blew me away (Yeezus, Pablo. 808s & Heartbreak) but these older albums that I never totally connected with anyway are basically a relic now. I just can’t find my way to enjoying them, quality be damned.
not my fav ye tbh. he talks a lot. idk if this one is for me
Pretty good, runs a little too long, a few too many fillers for me
Shit. I mean, I was definitely biased coming in as a life-long Swiftie, and I will definitely say that that conditioned my listening experience. I absolutely despise him as a person, for many reasons, but you simply cannot deny his musical talent. I hate it when people say that, but in some cases, it is true. My favorites on first listen were Slow Jamz and Last Call (crazy last track btw, what do you mean this is 12 minutes long and he's simply talking for like half of it? Still enjoyed it though). I wouldn't say it is a life-changing album for me, but I did enjoy listening to it once. Probably will never listen to it again based on principle, but it was quite decent (could probably even say good)
I wish Kanye wasn’t the mess he is
Can't stand the guy but this album has so many bangers. 3/5
3.5 ish
All falls down us good, but the album is pretty meh. Possible 3.5 on a good day
I'm not a rap fan, so this listen was completely outside my usual "algorithm" (which, of course, is the primary reason I'm doing this 1001 Album challenge in the first place). That said, I was impressed with the production. This album SOUNDS great. Learning more about Kanye's production background, I shouldn't be surprised. The rhythm tracks are funky, and soulful. To be honest, those backing tracks are what kept me listening. As for the subject matter, "Jesus Walks" was the standout. I was shocked at the level of introspection. Great cut. On the whole, the album had a sense of humor but was a little too long.
My second Kanye West album, and again, surprised. I find it nice that Kanye could make such diverse music, full of R&B and soul mixed with his rap lines, the melodies are great and catchy, and I hate to praise Kanye West. Funny how he tells the story on how he ended up on Jay-Zs record label...bet he ised a lot Kanye as well . I would give itba 4, but itbis Kanye so, it is 3/5
It gets a 6/10. Look, prior to him revealing himself as a Nazi-sympathizer and a bigot, the man made some decent music. And usually, I'm pretty good at separating the art from the artist. But I can't give this dude any more streams. He's a royal piece of human garbage. FWIW - "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" is a masterpiece. I'm sad that I can't listen to it anymore.
Album No. 0078 on my list. "The College Dropout" is already my second Kanye West Album ("My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy") being the first one. Reviewing that first one, I tried to the best of my abilities separating the art from the artist, and I'm trying the same thing again in this review. I found "The College Dropout" to be somewhat worse than MBDTF, but it was still surprisingly okay-ish. I'm not the biggest hip hop fan, but I can't deny that I had an okay time listening to the album. I definitely see why "The College Dropout" would be featured on a list like this. I didn't enjoy all tracks and found many of the short skits and interludes rather annoying, but there are certainly some good tracks on this. I've enjoyed "All Falls Down", "Slow Jamz", and "Through The Wire" in particular. 3/5 stars.
Es ist OK
Oh Kanye, you are making this really hard. And this really raises the eternal question of "the artist or the art". Can we forgive the transgressions of the artist enough to allow us to enjoy the art? I loved this record when it came out, and I still think it is one of the best hip hop albums of the past 30 years. I could sing the praises of this album, but I won't right now. I just can't stomach Kanye's persona these days. The antisemitic, pro-Nazi, pro-Trump rhetoric is just abhorrent. I can't bear it. But there have been plenty of (white) musicians who have flirted with fascism over the years (Bowie, Johnny Ramone, the Sex Pistols, Lemmy Kilmister, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bryan Ferry, the Rolling Stones, Rammstein, etc) whose pro-Nazi stances have been ignored, forgotten or forgiven over time. I wonder if he, as a black artist, will be granted the same leniency, should he ever come to his senses? In my mind, he would need to publicly and explicitly retract many of the things he has said over the past ten years. Kanye, however, seems to double-down every time he is held to account, which makes it hard. In the meantime, I am using the "Michael Jackson standard". I can still listen to MJs records from before he turned into a drug-addled, pedophile ambition monster (Jackson Five records are still awesome), but his post-Bad material is too creepy for my taste. Similarly, I can still enjoy The College Dropout, where Kanye still seems like a reasonable human being, but would struggle to even listen to his more recent releases. If Kanye had released this record and immediately disappeared, never to be heard of again, this would be five stars for me. But his words and actions are tarnishing its value to me, and so now, the best I can do is a three. And if he keeps going, that could fall even further. I have to admit some embarrassment at liking this record. Clearly the toxicity of Kanye's public persona is polluting this work for me, and I can foresee a time when you can't play his records at all because of his abhorrent ideas and statements. I acknowledge that, for many people, that line has already been crossed.
I do not like Kanye as a person, but I do like some of his music. I knew All Falls Down, Jesus Walks, Slow Jamz, and Through the Wire.
Album number 200. Not one I'd hope for today. I have made a concerted effort to separate the art from the artist in this project, but this one is really tough. Kanye's untreated mental illness (yes, I'm giving the benefit of the doubt) has led to him impulsively saying and doing horrible things for quite some time now. For others with problematic behavior, there are accusations that might or might not be the truth. But in Kanye's place, he's put it all out there front and center. With all of that being said, this is mostly an excellent album. I had young children when this came out, and I rarely bought hip hop records at the time due to not wanting this to be stuff they listened to. But this album was one I had to get based on all of the hype. He came out of the gates so full of himself, but his talent was so obvious lyrically and musically. He touched on themes that were not at all popular at the time as well. This was both a good listen and one I was ashamed to play. I have no clue what rating I'm going to give it.
This was better than I expected a Kanye album to be - I don’t know if I’d ever listen to it again given the legacy he’s left behind but on a whole I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to.
This one marginally holds up better than his others in the list so far. Mostly because he hadn’t gotten to bold yet. His flow is still kind of corny and his production hasn’t reached its apex yet. Again too bad he has destroyed his legacy.
I stopped listening to this blud for the last year and more. Haven't heard his debut I suppose and I can't rate this one that highly right now. 3 or 4 stars.
Fairly average rapper and producer markets himself as a genius and gets away with it, despite heavily relying on ghostwriters and ghost producers to do much of the work for him. It should have been enough to market himself as a charismatic performer and not have to pretend to be a visionary auteur. It's not a bad album, so I shouldn't let the Milli Vanilli of it all bother me. Actually, that's unfair on Milli; they never claimed to be making "great art." Maybe the problem is that Kanye is all show, all persona, and his persona pissed me off long before I knew he was a neo-Nazi. The genius myth simply isn't entertaining. I mostly listened to hip-hop up to 2004, but around the time this came out I just wasn't hearing anything that excited me any more. I quite liked the singles from this, but no more than I liked The Game. It's like being told Lady Gaga was a wildly inventive maverick chameleon circa The Fame; one can't just claim it without backing it up. It's not that the emperor is naked, but that he's wearing the same jeans, t-shirt and trainers as the guy next to him. Oh yeah, and once again IT'S TOO LONG. He could have cut nearly half an hour from this and it would have been a much better album.
7 / 10
Liker mye her. Litt mye skits. Siste "låta" er 12 minutter skit.. Why.
If this has been a bit shorter it would be a 4. I enjoyed it overall despite some of the songs being a little trashy.
Wish it was a tad shorter but it also is not his best
Not as good as I remembered. The use of backing vocals, and the very Kanye power transitions from verses to choruses were great. But overall, just not as good as some of his other stuff. Several songs are pretty boring, and I have a love/hate relationship with skits in music albums. This album overdoes the skits. Get Em High and Family Business were bright spots and hint at the genius we get in Graduation and 808s.
Not really my thing but All Falls Down and especially Through The Wire are decent tunes. Appreciate this was a landmark album but just not my cup of tea.
Kanye West is a horrible human being, but there is a lot of humour and some truth in this album, and it did break out hip/hop to a lot of people.
Early 2000s hip hop was it's own thing. Personally not a fan of the skit type tracks on the album and the only memorable song was Through the Wire which I distinctly remember hearing this as a kid either on radio or in a store
Luckily, I'm able to separate my mind between: Kanye (the person) - Horrible person. Kanye (the musician) - Meh. Using this this album as a touchstone - It's OK. Deliberately flashy rap, full of debut album theatrics, but overall, I found nothing that I actually enjoyed. Once it finished, there was no temptation to press "Repeat."
Isegist oli täitsa ok
Not his best work 6/10
I hate Kanye west but he makes good music
Alr, dont like kanye
Had few very good songs.
Not bad overall, but a full star deduction for being a Nazi and hanging with pedophiles.
He's a piece of shit but this album is pretty good.
Decent but not really my thing.
3-4
It's not bad, y'know
- Gefällt mir tatsächlich besser als ich gedacht hätte, aber ich bin einfach kein persönlicher Fan von Kanye - Ist ein gutes Album mit Abwechslung und guten Melodien Topsong: All Falls Down
The intermezzos/skits are probably funny only once, if at all. Some parts he tries to sing himself. Better leave it to other people. Over-all it's still pretty good, but his 2 newer albums in the book are much much better. I think this can be removed from future editions. Favorite song: get em high
Dammit. Made sure to go find a version that isn't attached to him. He really has ruined his entire public image to a point where it's hard to even be excited to listen to any of this. I'll try to review it non-biased. We Don't Care - 4/5 song. Catchy chorus, it's a good message, cool. Graduation Day - 2/5 eh. All Falls Down - 5/5 banger. Can't speak to the lyrical content but this is kayne in his bag. I'll fly away - 2/5 Spaceship - 5/5 Jesus Walks - 2/5 I get it but I don't want to listen to it ever again. Never let me down - JayZ: 2/5 Kanye: 3/5 J Ivy: 2/5 Beat: 4/5 Overall: 3/5 Get em high - 5/5 beat and vocals. This is my favorite song on here. New work out plan - 2/5. Great beat but nah. slow jamz - 3/5. Another good beat but this song is not for me. Fast rap is nice. breathe in breathe out - 2/5 she grabbed my golf balls in the club school spirit - 2/5, sure this goes hard when he says your sorority but that's about it. two words - 3/5 enjoyed mos def through the wire - 3/5 I think this song is overrated just because he did it while his jaw was wired shut. I do like that you can hear it, and it's inspirational in that sense but the song isn't amazing. family business - 4/5 pretty good, I love the piano on this. Hate the it aint gay to love a man line but again, 2004. last call - 3/5 why is this 12 minutes long. a least it's enjoyable mostly It's a good story but it's so long. skits - 2/5, some funny moments but pretty bad across the board That comes out to a 3. Man, I think that the appeal of college is going down steadily, and cool on him for saying it in 2004, but a lot of the college specific stuff on this album comes across like that Jake Paul we hate teachers song. Anyways, that's my trying to be unbiased as possible listen, sorry it's so long! Popping back into to say I listened to 3 newish albums today after this. This is beating life of a show girl (2/5) but losing hard to ego death at a bachelorette party (5/5) and I love my computer (5/5)
Chapeau. C'est quand même un clown talentueux. 2.5 étoiles
I like one song on here. I think it's School Spirit with some sampling thrown in. Apart from that? No.
Too poppy.
5.5/10 Highlight: Never Let Me Down

Every song is better knowing that Eloïse hates it.
I don't like all the swearing
I have a hard time separating what we know about Kanye today from his art.
I know this is supposed to be like, the greatest rap album of the early 2000s, but I really just don't like it very much. High school football team pre-game music. Kanye's a talented producer and an overrated rapper with a couple of banger lines, and this album showcases that. Some really great sampling, some really impressive features, some catchy tunes, but even if the album weren't a packed 75 minutes that feels longer, it would overstay its welcome. Great achievement and great debut, but well before the end, I'm done with it. Straddling a 3 and 4, thinking of going up because it ends pretty strong but Last Call is, in my opinion, a showcase of Kanye's mediocre flow. Maybe not mediocre, but one note. Either way, it just doesn't hit me the way it hits other people.
Hemeltje lief wat is deze man afgegleden he. 7,5/10 Highlights: Jesus Walks Through the Wire All Falls Down
7/10 Highlights All Falls Down
The production is immaculate, but to be honest the actual rapping is not my cup of tea. I had never heard this album until fairly recently, and I don't really feel like I missed anything, even though I know most of my friends who are about ten years younger worshipped this album, even if they dislike what Kanye stands for now. I still don't really get it.
That wasn't half bad. I had the displeasure of listening to a more recent album by Mr West and just turned it off. This is a good album although it's completely not my thing.
His debut album. Hip Hop. The production is slick. The skits are lame. The music is okay. The lyrics are pretty good at times. It's an okay album for me but probably not something I'll come back to.
Understand why the album got the praises it did (prior to Kanya going all nazi). Interested to relisten to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy when it shows up.
The amount of pointless, self-righteous virtue-signaling in these reviews is just embarrassing. "I won't give Kanye a single cent of streaming revenue!!" Well, luckily for you, he would only earn about a thousandth of a cent from your listen, lol. Some fun tracks, and definitely some annoying tracks. Also the Lil Jimmy skit made me lol.
With postsecondary education tuition costs, I can't blame them.
Nayyy not for me. We Don’t Care was good.
Not the best Kanye album.
Overall, a pretty decent record with some fun songs. It’s got a few filler tracks and skits, and it would be a lot stronger without the faffing about, but it’s better than the “working through his mental health” era of Kanye that started a decade later. 3.5/5
Kanye West was Len’s cleaner for 3-4 years. He was terrible! 3.4 4/21 All Falls Down
The Good: Saving money, by dropping out… The Bad: Maybe some more higher education could’ve helped the man? The Ugly: Stupidity of people not recognizing serious mental health issues… Here comes my skipping record: I don’t like rap. However, this album was actually “easy listening” for me. It was musical, it has structure, just easy listening. Now, if they could stop with the damn sketches, maybe I can start taking certain hip hop albums more serious. 3*
While I liked the album, I have a hard time understanding why this would be on here as one that must be listened to
Kanye again...stupid sick man. This album might frustrate me more than the last one. He is soooo good at rap and making it so smooth and effortless. He has such good poignant lyrics and mixes in so many pieces that flawlessly go together. His narcism shows but in a way he is really that good at making music. This one did get a little long after a while and seemed a little all over the place at the end. But my gosh he is a bad person and seems to go against so many things he is singing about
TIL he recorded Through the Wire while his jaw was wired shut after a car accident. Wut. How did I not know this. He's one that's REALLY hard to separate the art from the artist, but this is a good album, except for The New Workout Plan. That song is gross. Overall though, I'd give this more accolades if he wasn't awful. I was a big fan of several of these songs back in the day.
Yes good melody
This isn’t my genre, but I kinda get how people would like Kanye’s earlier stuff after this listen
Songs were good, don't care about skits
I'd never heard a Kanye album before, and now isn't the time to start really! That said, I still listened. What a damn shame. Some excellent tracks.
Not his best album. Couple bangers, but uneven. Talent is there. Too bad he’s now nuts
Great album - with some very cutting and still relevant social commentary. 3 starts because some songs were meh but overall great hooks, lyrics and super creative.
Good start to the Kanye story. I prefer the next 4 albums as he really got into his stride IMO. But this one is decent, glimpses of what's to come, both his positive genius and also his insecurity and issues.
Nice listening to Kanye's earlier music. More rappy and happier than I'm used to hearing him. Some songs hints at what's to come, genre wise. Not bad at all.
Some quality beats and funny lines, but I don't feel the quality is consistent through out the album which is a fair downside when the album is well over an hour long. I don't find the skits enjoyable either. When it's good though, the beats are fantastic to listen to, the production is great and Kanye's flow is fantastic.
Mixed emotions.
I remember when this album debuted, mostly thanks to Slow Jamz and Through the Wire. It sounded so unique compared to other hip-hop albums and still does. Kayne before Kayne Kayne'd. 3.5 stars
Wasn’t a huge fan when it was released. Have always enjoyed “Through the Wire” & “ All Falls Down”. What we know now about Kayne it’s hard for me to separate his personality from his art… I would say 3.5
I'm not the biggest Kanye fan, I'd never heard this album all the way through and some of these songs are a part of my childhood memories, so it's nice to put context to them. I've always thought Kanye was a better producer than rapper, and even though he shows some impressive rap stunts, I don't find it redeemable in general. I'm picky. I don't find the album has maintained a futuristic style, though it does have its own sound and it stands out as iconic. I do feel nostalgia, I do feel 00's retro. I would not put this on my regular rotation, but the production work is something I can't deny (if not occasionally overproduced), and would be happy to give it a listen if anybody suggests playing the record.
Sigh. Had to find a random upload of this album on YouTube to avoid giving this guy any money, since I've never actually sat through one of his albums. Pretty clear he's always been full of himself, because this album is way too long. Anyway, I've never been super interested in him, but he's got some zingers in the lyrics, and he's incredibly influential, so a very conflicted 3* from me.
First time I have listened to one of his albums. It’s okay, probably won’t listen to it again
Y'know, not my favorite Kanye album. As is the case with most of his albums, I do enjoy the humor and the beats.
3.5.
Surprised again. I've never listened to Kanye before this list, and now I get to enjoy another album of his. Can't argue the dude has talent, and it shows through again on this. Amazing beats, entertaining storytelling. Just a solid album.
This had some good instrumentals and I can see why people liked Kanye a lot before. There was some catchy moments but again I'd never listen to this willingly.
Brilliant production and lyrics but….its Kanye. Can he Nazi why someone wouldn’t like his music? It’s hard to separate the art and the artist sometimes.
I'm pretty sure I actually liked this a lot when I first heard it, but I'm not going to bother listening to it again to see if that's still the case. Rating it as close to my hip hop average as possible so the fact that Kanye is an actual Nazi doesn't hurt the entire genre too much in my ratings.
If there's an artist I wanna think about less, it's probably Kanye with his endless horrible shenanigans but despite that this is the album I got and well... I didn't hate it, I didn't love it either, it was a good album in all the ways you'd expect a rap album from the mid 00s to be, except that the skits are actually kinda funny and not just useless to the album. I guess if anything part of why I didn't like it more is that most songs just kinda went in one ear out the other, the production is cool but it didn't stand out to me like hip hop most often does, and I don't think it's negative feelings about Kanye making it difficult to like, but I guess I don't find Kanye's style of production here all that appealing (but ig we'll see about other albums) As a whole, good album but not one I care for much
3 1/2 I can’t stand Kanye but this is a good album.
Can't deny it's a great album, but can't rate appropriately with who he's become
Chulo pero largo
Fun album!
Definitely not my genre of choice, and the guy is a massive prick but some of it I quite enjoyed other parts I didn’t. Will probably never listen to it again just because of him and what he says and does.
this was good, i fuck with it
I have a hard time separating the Kanye of today from the Kanye of the past. While I have enjoyed some of his music, I have very much felt he was always on the overrated ride. 3.5/5
I liked this album quite a bit. I try not to hold the character or actions of the artist against their art, but Kanye has definitely made that harder than usual, though some of that's certainly recency bias. All that said,, this album holds up quite well. It's satirical, smart, and funny, with some pretty catchy tracks to boot. 3/5 (can't help but think I'd be inclined to give it a 4 if he stopped making music and being in the public eye around 2010)
Didn't really enjoy this, but I don't think it's bad at all
Great fuckin album by a real fuckin asshole
Not bad
Wish this had half stars. Sick beats. Semi-positive Kanye before he went off the deep end.
Back when Kanye was a legit genius. Hip hop is no where near my thing, but I love this album. I’m taking two stars off because these days he is a legit psychopath
This album is good. Not good enough to overcome Kanye as a person.
Pretty good, but really suffers with all the stupid skits. That would really hurt the re-listenability.
First half was OK. Second half was pretty great, had some very well made and powerful songs.
I had never heard this album in full before so I wanted to listen from a “this album was important, but clearly the legacy has been tarnished” lens. I didn’t love it, but it did make me sad to think of this man who used to make music with purpose and how it quickly became another money making scheme for Kanye on top of him using his platform to either be an actual Nazi or to make the worst social experiment of all time. Time will tell? 3.25 star album. One star man.
Repeat listen
Jesus fucking Christ, it’s another Kanye West album. You know, when you become a hotpot of controversy, it becomes a Herculean effort to separate art from the artist. It’s even harder when you don’t really give a shit about hip-hop or rap to begin with. So, to be honest, I just want to move on and get this over with. This album was only fine, but much like My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, I went in and out not understanding what in the fuck people see in Kanye to make them say “he’s a terrible human being that makes great music”. Because to me, he’s a terrible human being that makes okay music. The only reason I won’t completely rip this album is, and this might be weird, is because… some of the music behind the rapping is really good. Like if someone took out all of Kanye and like, keep some of the instrumental parts with the higher pitch stuff, this would be actually great. Especially on Through the Wire. As is, outside of a few fleeting moments, I largely didn’t care. It’s got all the rap album trappings: being over an hour, songs that come off as annoying and “comedic” skits. Ok, actually, Graduation Day is pretty funny. That “What in the fuck was that” lives rent free in my head. But the diploma skits overstayed their welcome. We get it, Kanye, diplomas are worthless, I didn’t need like three skits pounding that info into my skull. And dear god, the fuck even is Last Call? You seriously end your album with a 12-minute song that’s mostly just you talking? I didn’t this I would yes an album to death, but… here I am. Look, I just want to move on from this. I have like 800+ albums to go and the less I have to deal with Kanye West the better. Outside of all his bullshit, this was just ok, but I’m confidant in saying that I’ll never get Kanye West. Both in terms of his music and person. And frankly, I just don’t care. Favorite track: Slow Jamz Other hits: Through the Wire, The New Workout Plan, All Falls Down, Family Business
For a hip-hop/rap album, it's actually pretty good. However, it's least enjoyable listening to it knowing Kanye goes on to be a Nazi.
Beats
I hate to say that I enjoyed this a bit (but at least it's from before he went off the rails). A few great samples and generally enjoyable listening 3
Pretty good. Social commentary on the lack of value of a college education flipped into rapping about drugs, clubs, guns, and money. Hilariously in poor taste for old Kanye. Sure you can make money, but did you know that bipolar disorder can be onset? Youda learn that in school boy. Anyway, I used to praise old kanye. But Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was far better than this. But the second side including last call are bulletproof. Good albo.
This one isn't too bad, but it's a little one-note with the overuse of those sped up soul samples, often referred to as Chipmunk Soul. West is famously a sloppy MC but that doesn't really distract from the songs, which despite being somewhat serious in nature, at the end of the day are meant as Pop music. Obviously, West went on to produce much better albums, and also much, much worse ones. Key tracks: Jesus Walks The New Workout Plan Through the Wire (Looking at the reviews, seems like I'm the only one separating the art from the artist, which is sad.)
Grande canie guest
3 - surprisingly listenable
5 stars for the music 1 star for the man
3,5
Looking back at this historically, there's no doubt that it had a big impact on hip hop, lyrically as well from the production side which was always something West got lots of praise for (albeit being aided by tons of talented people - also other producers). Impact shouldn't also have only a positive connotation - there is something like a negative impact we often forget when we talk about music. West's debut album has both: Great, deeper lyrics and wonderful sample productions but also annoying high-pitched soul samples and hooks sang by guys who can't sing as well as odd mixing here and there. The album has too many unnecessary skits but also some tracks that are not very interesting ("Through The Wire"). "Breathe In, Breathe Out", "Get Em High" or "Jesus Walks" are bangers though. All in all, I'd rather give this 3.5 but I tend to 3 now that I'm in doubt. There's just too much forgettable stuff and, as I wrote, trends that shouldn't have happend.
Listened to this a lot back when it came out. It just doesn't have the same kick/appeal anymore now that we know that Kanye is fully off the rails.
I’m not into rap/hip hop, I’m also most certainly not a fan of Kanye West - I do not support his Nazi rhetoric/comments. However ignoring West as a person, and giving this album a fair shot — I was pleasantly surprised, the songs were all pretty decent and the humor sprinkled in was great. I didn’t love it as I usually don’t love rap/hip hop but it was certainly better than expected, and I would say it was good and I enjoyed it.
An impressive debut, and one of the best and most artistically satisfying hip-hop albums of all time - bringing great production, clever if sometimes juvenile lyrics, tasty samples and solid R&B hooks. Hip-hop isn't my thing, but this record is a shoe-in for top ten in the genre. It's too bad that Kanye is such an asshole.
Kanye as a human: 0/5 This album: 3/5
Whew, lot of feelings about this. It’s impossible to separate what Kanye has become from the Kanye that was, the record is hugely influential and pleasant to listen to the for the most part, some of the lyrics are deeply troubling and one cannot stop thinking about what is to come.
so torn because I used to really like this but upon relistening it is... rather misogynistic. I used to see this album as 'before he went crazy' but I fear it was there all along
I see why people like him (or liked him) the beats were cool, his style was unique with lots of story telling. The lyrical content is a bit questionable at times still, but that tends to be the case with rap music. Will probably never listen to again, but I see how Kanye inspired so many other artists at the time and got as popular as he did.
Never listened to any Kanye before so the only track I had heard before was All Falls Down. I liked the clear delivery (I realise I sound ancient but it isn't my genre!), orchestration and guest artists. Mostly thoughtful lyrics and concept.
After having some initial reservations about listening to this due to the KW's objectionable political statements of late, i decided that he seems to have lost the plot after 2017/18. And seeings as this album was way before then it would be wortb listening to. I found it mostly enjoyable and really liked Spaceship in particular.
3 - decent
Fajniutkie. Buja. Nostalgicznie
Oh Kanye, Kanye, Kanye, what can I do with you... liked some of the production, but way too long
ai caramber, serste kanye album isch dropped - und zwar hemmer da en klassische fall vom "pink polo kanye" churzi gschichts stund ich würd sege mer chan am ye sini albe ih 4 kategorie ihteile sini early classic era wommer da mal "pink polo" kanye era nenned (bis zu 808 & heartbreak) pre kim era wo bis zu "watch the throne" gange isch the golden era (wells mini fav isch) – da ischer scho chli is crazy abgrutscht aber nanig ganz -> "yeezus" bis "kids see ghosts" und denn alles danach isch "spiral into batshit crazy" isch minnere meinig nah progressiv beschissener worde, paar gueti sache aber mostly meh stuff aber ezt zu dem schmucke ding: ich lose nöd so viel pink polo ye wellsmer zu classic und au ab und zue chli langwilig isch es hett natürlich scho paar bangers druf aber allgemein ischmers denn doch zu zahm und zwenig experimentell, was minnere meinig ja am ye sis gröschte talent isch (abgseh devo sich unbeliebt zmach weller eifach en batshit crazy nazi isch) bin froh gsi hanismer doch mal ih ganzer längi gönnt und ich hans gfühl es paar vo sine spätere crazyness züg schinet doch chli dure und au textlich hetts es paar element wonner gern mal wider ufgrift dur sini albene dure alles ih allem chani da aber keis 4ri inedrücke leider, aber für 3.5 pink polos sötts den scho lange I miss the old Kanye, straight from the Go Kanye Chop up the soul Kanye, set on his goals Kanye I hate the new Kanye, the bad mood Kanye The always rude Kanye, spaz in the news Kanye I miss the sweet Kanye, chop up the beats Kanye I gotta say, at that time I'd like to meet Kanye See, I invented Kanye, it wasn't any Kanyes And now I look and look around and there's so many Kanyes I used to love Kanye, I used to love Kanye I even had the pink polo, I thought I was Kanye What if Kanye made a song about Kanye Called "I Miss the Old Kanye"? Man, that'd be so Kanye That's all it was, Kanye, we still love Kanye And I love you like Kanye loves Kanye
I bought this at the time and like most people, could immediately tell that Kanye was destined for big things. The production and lyrics are great and it comes back with great tunes again and again. I was excited to see what he'd do next and I thought he was genuinely funny and clever. Now, if ever there's an appropriate time to dock a star for being a genuine binbag of a human, this is the one. It's hard to identify the extent to which his clear mental health issues have contributed to Kanye's artistic and personal decline but you can't just casually become a nazi sympathiser and dangerously narcissistic megalomaniac without having some serious character flaws to begin with. There are plenty of narcissists in this world and particularly in this industry, but when you combine that with these levels of wealth and influence it becomes truly dangerous. I'm sure there will be further Kanye albums to come in the list but the closing number of this one in particular struck me as an accurate representation of his career generally. For the first couple of minutes there's a great track building, but then we end up with ten minutes of Kanye rambling on about himself in a seemingly unscripted history of the man and the artist, while the beat sort of chunters along in the background, long since forgotten behind the self-obsession. I just want it be over. Please shut up, dude. You had our attention and were earning our respect but you should've stopped a long time ago.
Read some of the reviews of this reviewing the person who created it. I'm sorry but that's not what this project is concerned with. Judge the album. It's a decent album. Not really my type of thing. It's definitely well produced but it's just not for me. Stand out song - Jesus walks and Slow jams (the quick rap on this is incredible). - 3
Not really my bag.
don't like all the interludes, but the songs themselves are pretty good
A lot better than I expected, to be honest. Not a big fan of the language, but the music part was surprisingly decent.
3.5
Nothing overly groundbreaking here but it’s better than ‘Yeezus’ and ‘My Beautiful Twisted Dark Fantasy’ which are also in the 1001 albums book. Big name guest rappers help to elevate this to better than average. And I will admit that there are some cool samples and beats on this as well. However, at the end of the day Kanye just isn’t that great a rapper and he doesn’t really have anything all that interesting or important to say.
5/10…hip hop
I remember this album being better. Production used to be so fucking good but dude lost his mind. Now we get …https://open.spotify.com/track/3uYDO9dPLTVrgfwg7EYXSf?si=hKB-OZTQS5Ww1_SxztqgeA
I’ll write this as if I don’t know how Kanye ended up years later. It’s too bad, cuz the creep can roll, man. Kanye was doing the best hip hop production in the game before he made himself a star, and this record shows what he could do when he saved all the choice beats for himself. Turns out he could also rap with the best. He’s a musician’s rapper and knows how a song works. He also wrote some fantastic rhymes about topics that no one else would touch, including (no way!) human vulnerability and wondering about his place in the world. I think this album could use some editing, it’d make a fine EP.
I dislike this man. I don't particularly care for his work. Still, this is a good album. Maybe the best from him.
we dont care isch e perfekts bispil vo früenem kanye. es macht sooo spass zum lose de beat isch fucking geeil es isch sozialkritik und sin flow isch easy charmant. mir hend wprklich es genie verlore. nocher zwei cooli aber nöd hammer songs. und denn halt jesus walks. scheiss isch guet. ich fang weg dem nöd ah glaube aber er het so viel liideschaft dehinder. get em high isch huere viel nöd kanye und s stresst mich mit de ziit au wenn de beat sehr cool isch. de workout plan slappt zwor aber isch glaub recht problematisch kanye. aso so women be shoppin problematisch. slow jamz isch geer nöd miis gsi ui. aso ich has kennt aber irgendwenn z vil s glich. und ich ghör eigentlich lieber de kanye. breathe in breathe out au chlii lahm. i always had a phd a pretty huge dick. school spirit skit 1 isch super. school spirit super gospelmässig. i finished school. oh you graduated? no i decided i was finished. super funny. through the wire slappt uhuere s sample isch seeeehr geil. er chans ebe. und dasers mit meeega metall i sim muul nochme umfall ufgnoh het goht chli hard. dude wär fasch gstorbe. family business cute. aber gseh langsam sochli dure hani s gfühl. wenns guet isch isch de kanye insane guet. aber het schochli e formle. alte last call goht jo e EWIGKEIT. und er redt afoch. mh. glaub e 3. well scho uuuhuere lang und d hälfti vode songs hani nur okay gfunde. die ander hälfti macht extreem spass.

I got Kanye 2 days in a row. Of all the artists to get back to back... This came out when I was in high school, and I do remember some of the songs but none of them feel iconic in the same way as other artists from that time period. I can appreciate this as a tone shift in rap, but if I didn't have that context I'm not sure I'd understand why it's here. Of course, Kanye's personal trajectory has to be put aside which many folks won't do.
Solid. About 20 minutes too long. 3/5
Fuck Kanye West's nazi ass. I used to bump this record a ton way back in the day. Some of the tracks hold up but overall the album is bloated and drags. Some of the production and mixing sound a little dated, especially a few of the features. Jay-Z's verse on Never Let Me Down sounds like it was pasted on top of the finished track; it doesn't quite sit in the mix properly. I know this is "classic" and at the time it was, but even outside of Kanye's turn to nazism this is far away from his best work.
Not really my thing, but I can appreciate it.
This album gets three stars for the beats. That's it.
Overall good album, golden era Kanye.
Not too shabby. Not my jam though, but I can see why this album became so big.
If you want to know how I feel about Kanye West as a person and how I try to separate art from artist, please go back and look at my review of "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy." The short version: Kayne is a mentally ill person who seems to be completely rejecting whatever help he could be getting and has now gone off the complete deep end into fascism and sporting swastikas. I don't support him. I don't like him. And while this will likely influence my opinions of his music, I try not to let it. Now, the album: It's fine. There's some real great tracks here (see below), but it's far too long. And "Last Call"? Are you kidding me? What is that supposed to be? If I wanted to hear Kayne talk about himself for more than ten minutes I would just find literally any clip of him talking about anything, ever. That was some self-indulgent crap if there ever was some. But man when this album hits, it hits so hard. It's a great mix of genres at times, and other times it just shows off this man's clear musical genius. The production is top notch ("Jesus Walks" in particular), and Kayne's ability to take a simple musical concept (a beat, a melody, or a lyric that he seems fond of) and build on it is on full display. Look, I don't like the guy but it's so clear that he's immensely talented. It's such a damn shame to have to witness his decline in real time. I could've done without the skits. Those were unnecessary. And, at least for me, it was mostly downhill after "Jesus Walks." That's basically half ot the album I'm saying wasn't amazing. Three stars, purely because what was good was excellent. Standout Tracks: We Don't Care, All Falls Down, I'll Fly Away, Spaceship, Jesus Walks, The New Workout Plan
I’ve never listened to a full album by Kanye, but I'm familiar with a lot of his songs, and I usually like them. This album went a bit long for me. On a re-listen, I’d cherry-pick the songs and skip the skits.
Kanye sucks, this is a good album
I didn't get on the Kanye bandwagon until Graduation (and until Life of Pablo). This is okay, but I prefer the later albums.
I actually enjoyed this album a lot, even though I'm not a big fan of Kanye.
I hate what Kanye has become, but unlike Eminem's lyrics I could listen to this in isolation and be okay with it (apart from. The New Workout Plan, -1). I was going to give this a 4 but I think with the lyrics to that song, a 3 feels right.
Pretty good. Some bangers. Don't need it in my collection but good to hear for sure
Very torn about this one. There is no denying he is extremely talented and really paved the way for a next generation. But he’s also a disgusting human being.
Kanye before he went crazy. But you can still see the crazy even back then… that self indulgent 12 minute last song. I only got into Kanye after dark twisted fantasy. I’d never listened to this album but I’d hear so many of the songs before. There are so many features on here too! I can appreciate it but I don’t think I’ll be going back for more listens.
As I am not really into hip-hop and Kanye West is a certified whacko, I did not expect to be entertained by this album. However I find it quite listenable and quite musical.
GD*mnit Kanye, if this is an art project, ala Andy Kaufman, time to abandon project. If it isn't, please someone help this guy. No cOsIgN WhAtEvEr tHiS Is
Kanye West: 0 Stars - Is a Nazi - Has an ego complex the size of The Sears Tower - evidently doesn’t like the North Side of CHI - is just a shitty person in general - Has made some really good music. Strong strong singles on this album. Shame that he is trash.
Brutalement.
This album is definitely catchy and was enjoyable for its time, bringing a refreshing energy with its uplifting production. One thing I just learned from listening to this is the term “chipmunk soul”—a production style that speeds up soul samples to create a distinctively bright and energetic sound. I never knew there was an actual name for that technique, but it definitely adds to the album’s lively and feel good vibe.
Not just another Gangsta-Rap album. But still Gangsta-Rap...
Not really an album. Couple bangers on there tho.
I will preface this by saying Mr. West turned out to be a deplorable human being so I hate to like any of this (including contributing to his bottom line by streaming this for the review). He's awful but damn, he makes some fire beats. When this album came out it was different than others in the genre and a lot of the songs are really catchy and dare I say clever. He has some undeniable talent but I'm finding it hard to separate the art from the artist and I probably would have rated this higher 10+ years ago. The first half of TCD is much stronger (Slow Jamz and prior), after that it goes downhill (plus the skits are embarrassingly laughable). This sorta sums up early-Kanye into Yeezy into the sheer lunatic he is now (publicity skits included). Considering all factors, I can't go higher than a 3.05.
It's hard not to be aware of Kanye West's relatively public and scandalous rise and fall. Despite his huge pop culture influence I hadn't heard any of his music beyond a couple of radio hits many many years ago. I had never delved into any aspect of his early career but have consistently heard from various sources that The College Dropout is a great album. I went in skeptical, but after finishing this listen I have to agree. It's a different take on rap with some pretty catchy tracks and some clever lyrics. It hits on some of the common rap tropes but mostly avoids a lot the standard gangsta rap points that never really worked for me. I had never heard a single song off of The College Dropout and was entertained from start to finish. If he was able to build off of this strong debut I can see how he quickly elevated himself to one of the biggest rappers of his era. Unfortunately Kanye has certainly had a storied history. He has done himself no favors over the past couple of years which has only served to distance himself from what may once have been a very promising musical career. At this point I think most people look at him as an off-the-rails psycho and largely ignore his music (I know I did prior to this listen). Glad I was given a reason to give this one a listen. Solid review from my end. 3.18 stars
This is the second KW album I've listened to now. I first thought my first experience was an aberration, so much so that I enjoyed it and gave the first on a 4 star review. Maybe it isn't an aberration after all as this was better than expected. The standout track was 'Jesus Walks', I might even add it to a playlist! He may not be my thing but I can understand his appeal.
Another elaborate hip hop album, deftly produced, complex and clever lyrics, which probably deserves a second listen, but which I think I may appreciate and admire, but which I don't think I'll ever really love or connect to emotionally, although the run of tracks from New Workout Plan onwards are fun and I like them, but the final Last Call is just way too long and I can't imagine listening to Kanye's rambling memories for fun again.
I've listened to this a few times and I'm not sure how good it is. He is a tragic figure really, and I know his view have been less than wholesome but, benefit of the doubt, he'd forgotten to take his meds. He did help move rap on from the ostensible inexorable bling movement, and probably paved the way for the likes of Kendrick Lamar. For that, and for some good tunes in here it's a three.
This is a good album, 3/5. I'm not a huge fan of Kanye West generally, but he does have some nice tracks. Of the 21 tracks on this album, four (4) are on my "liked" songs list.
3.5 What's with all the fucking skits? Kanye is very talented, shame he's such a shitty person.
Pretty solid album from Kanye. Standout tracks: We Don't Care All Falls Down Get 'Em High Through the Wire Family Business
I actually found myself kind of enjoying this album. I like it a lot better than Yeezus. I enjoyed All Falls Down, Spaceship, Jesus Walks, and Never Let Me Down. Kanye really does make some very interesting music. It's not 100% my thing but I can appreciate it. It's a shame he's such an awful person.
Most of vocals were clear and often humorous. Decent chill beats.
Didn't want to like this because, you know, but I actually really did think some of these songs were really good.
Ok, not great
this has some good deep cuts here but considering how good some of his discography is this is kind of mid tier (defs not near the bottom, man has probably had the biggest and most unending fall from grace i have ever seen)
Ah, Kanye again, the real struggle of separating the art from the artist. I couldn't do it for Yeezus because by then he'd already gone into ubercunt mode, but I suppose The College Dropout is him at the start of a journey where that didn't seem likely. I actually bought Late Registration but never owned or really listened to this, it's alright, has some strong moments in All Falls Down, Never Let Me Down (especially, it's great) and Two Words, but the rest is a little overblown in style, content and length. Those three tracks probably squeeze it to a 3/5 though, they're really good, but it probably says something else that they're all made better by collabs.
Surprisingly enjoyed this, but it's far too long.
This is a good hip hop record. I know it’s a pretty commonly expressed sentiment, but I really do miss the old Kanye. My biggest complaint about this record is its inconsistency. There’s some really top tier singles, a few good songs, and the rest of it feels a lot like filler. As far as the singles go, “Jesus Walks” is clearly the best track on the record, but I personally feel it still pales in comparison to some of Kanye’s later singles. It’s really well produced for a debut record, and you can tell Kanye had a very unique approach and vision when it comes to actually making music. Not my favourite Kanye album, but certainly nowhere near the worst music he’s made. 3/5
I miss the old Kanye
Blind album. I'm here to rate the music regardless of the person. This album had some okay tracks and it flowed well, and the skits were creative. I liked Dark Twisted Fantasy more though and I thought a lot of people liked this more from what they told me. Oh well. Meh.
Listened before. Good but long. Meh on the skits
There is a lot of good stuff here, and I lot of stuff not so much. I like the gospel influences, not a fan of the 'chipmunk soul'. An impressive list of collabs. If I had heard this when it came out I might have rated it higher. Probably more relevance than I am giving it credit for.
I just kinda struggled to get excited about this one, unfortunately. Even when I was impressed, I wasn’t really interested.
Kanye innit
Better than I expected - I had only listened to one full Kanye album before and I really didn't like that. This had some great production, which makes sense, and some surprisingly good stuff from Kanye. But it definitely falls short for me. Way too long. Annoying skits. And, well, Kanye.
Ja, abwechslungsreich.
Almost a 4. It felt a little long-winded, especially the last song. I didn't enjoy the skits but I don't usually in music albums, but the music was pretty great
I miss the old Kanye. Not my favorite Kanye album, but it is produced well. I found myself singing along to the chorus and singing more so than the rap lyrics. Good features, my favorite being Jamie Fox. That outro story was a little long winded.
First 9 tracks are really really great. Then the middle kinda lost me and not a big fan of skits. However last 3 redeemed the album 3.5/5 (could be a 4)
it's good but it's kanye u know (listened to on a random youtube channel) fav track never let me down for sure
It's got some good stuff. It's too long and Kanye is too weird. Will I listen to again: 10%
A fairly high quality, if slightly drawn out full-length debut from Kanye West. Aside from the "classics" (Jesus Walks, All Falls Down & Through The Wire), oddly the only track I was familiar with from this record was 'The New Workout Plan', a comically bad piece of all too common 2000's misogyny. Unfortunately, that isn't the only ugly moment on this album. This doozy comes very early on during 'We Don't Care': "The drug game bulimic, it's hard to get weight// So n* money is homo, it's hard to get straight". More grizzly bottom-feeding bars are not hard to come by. 'Slow Jamz' feels like an R. Kelly offcut. Jamie Foxx introduces what is ostensibly a smooth song for the ladies. Kanye takes no time whatsoever to dismantle that image "I'ma play this Vandross, you gon' take yo' pants off" (poor Luther passed away 18 months after this hot garbage was released, he'd had enough). This isn't to say that this record is without highlights. 'Never Let Me Down' is a notable first major collaboration between West and Roc-A-Fella boss Jay-Z, despite never being released as a single. The album finishes well with 'Through the Wire' and 'Family Business' also. Aside from the occasional (perhaps frequent) juvenile lyric, this album is notable for displaying West's chops as a producer. The extensive use of sampling throughout The College Dropout keeps things interesting, even when things threaten to fizzle out during the bloated middle of the record. Top 3: 1. Never Let Me Down 2. Jesus Walks (that sample is heavenly) 3. Breathe In Breathe Out Bottom 1: Slow Jamz Overall Score: 6.4/10
Fantastic album from start to finish.
Some decent singles but has all the annoying traits of a hip hop album
Good beats wasted on a man who thinks he’s God’s mixtape.
This one is better than 50's album but I'm also giving it a 3 because i need to re-adjust my scale. It is starting to seem like the author of this list and me don't have the same taste in hip hop music =(
Started out good, but got bloated too much by the end...
Two words is one of my favourite songs ever and this is a great album
Pretty good stuff but not my preferred style
Started well with We don't Care, but then it had that annoying Graduation day like nails being driven into my ear. a few pretty average songs and then spaceship is ok. Don't like the R&B songs on the album (i.e. Slow Jamz). I can see why it is popular, just not my style of music. Mostly painful to the ears, Won't listen to it again
pre: not a fan of kanye as a person. Never listened to an entire album, but there are a few singles I have worn out (including Jesus Walks and School Spirit from this album). Interested to hear them in the context of an album. Super mixed feelings. Any given song, in a vacuum, was pretty damn great. I like Kanye's lyrics and vocal style, and he's an inarguably great producer. As an album, I'm not sure what I would think, but my listening was so disjointed today that I didn't really get that experience. I hate the skits, as I do for pretty much every rap/hip-hop album that incorporates it (except Enter the Wu-Tang of course). And then there's the Kanye of it all. Oof. I think this would normally be a solid 3.5 for me (between "I wouldn't mind if someone else played this" and "I would choose to put this on"). I have rounded up in the past, but I think the Kanye-ness of it plus the skits are going to make me round down. Specifically, they are genre and period appropriate, but they would be a slight deterrent to me listening to the album again. I do want to listen to the other two albums in this trio though
Had high expectations and not that the album wasnt good. Just my expectations were so high and I dont feel like the whole album impressed me it was just a few songs.
Previously, when I listened to West, I figured I was missing something. It does nit satisfy like Nas, Wu, Em, NWA... So this was a chance to see what I was missing. Turns out, not much. This is not bad, but it wad not enjoyable either.
Yeah Kanye was way better before he went totally nuts into the Trump Swamp and all that. He has some good rhymes and beats with top-notch guests like Jay-Z and Mos Def so it's not terrible
It's so funny/sad how Kanye's albums act as portraits of a man's rise and fall, and how money power and fame can corrupt people. The general concept of this album is great. I love the skits and find them hilarious, and I enjoy a lot of the songs. Unfortunately this album suffers significantly worse bloat than MBDTF. Every song is about 1-2 mins too long, and many tracks on the second half of the album weren't entirely necessary. That being said I generally enjoyed the album. 3/5
Probably the biggest challenge separating the art from the man when listening to Kanye. I didn’t want to like any of this, but ended up being surprised, probably due to the obvious shift away from gangsta style. A pretty strong debut. Rating down because of length, overuse of chipmunk pitch-shift vocals, and inclusion of unnecessary talking tracks that IMO actually take away from poignant messages being delivered in the actual songs.
rap
Kanye is THE character. I had listened to the classics before but never listened to a full record before (except Vultures, since my Ye-sexual friends told me to). This is way better than Vultures, but still doesn't justify all the Kanye hype for me. I acknowledge that this is a solid album, well made, and real good inside the genre, but I still don't get it. I have had Kendrick and Dre in this project and all three albums are similar in terms of quality for me. I can't put this over them. Maybe one day I'll get this album, but not Ye(t).
I find it difficult to describe and review music. Rap is even harder. Upon first listen it was an easy 2. Maybe I just don't get rap? Then again maybe I just don't like it? But that can't be true. I find myself rapping along to the really famous tunes over the years, knowing all the words and enjoying it. Maybe it's the lyrics. Maybe it's the beat. Maybe it's because it's familiar to me. Or a combination of the three. I decided to give it a second spin, follow along with the words and really listen to the lyrics, and lo and behold, it was a much more enjoyable experience. Kanye is very clever with his lyrics and flows really well. The first two tunes are the best and the quality dips as the record goes on but returns on 'Family Business'. Skits shouldn't be a thing. Minute long waffle that breaks the flow of the album and there's quite a lot on this one. I enjoyed this. Being unfamiliar with his work as a whole, I imagine it isn't Kanye's best and merely laid the groundwork for a future masterpiece. I hope there's another album of his on this list and I look forward to it.
Never heard this before. I was expecting to hate this album, because Kanye is such a douchebag. But I have to admit I really liked this. I was planning on giving it 4 stars but then I heard the final track. After 12 minutes of that self-indulgent stupid track I'm dropping my rating to a 3. What a way to ruin a good album.
FYI this is his debut album…. Def not his greatest album but all of the signs that would set up his greatest work. Ignore him as a lunatic and just appreciate the art here. Conceptually it’s amazing, lyricism is very good, and overall it’s a fun ride. There’s low and boring points in there that don’t add up to quite a great album but some of those songs like all falls down or get em high are brilliant
Came to the same conclusion I always do - that the back half is considerably weaker, dampening the experience quite a bit. Still, it's The College Dropout by Kanye West.
I mean, fire songs (except ending rant) but dickhead of a guy
This album was done extremely well it's just too damn long.
