Reviews (page 3 of 7)

A good rock-n-roll album but a bit repetitive.

8/10 good energy, this is the kind of 60s music i like

8/10. Short and sweet. Lots of fun old songs that didn't overstay their welcome

It's so hard to appreciate albums like this in the same way they must have when they came out. Like in 1967 I'm sure this was mind-blowing stuff but the psych-rock market got so saturated in such a short time that I've heard like a dozen records that sound very similar to this. 7/10

Enjoyed this a lot more than I expected

4 Stars

Enjoyed this way more than I thought I would.

What a jam. How annoying the entire album isn't on Spotify or I'd add it to my regular rotation

The whole album isn't on Spotify which is a bummer. I liked what I did listen to! Reminded me of hey Jude, more folk rock style

Why didn’t this band do better and how come I’ve never heard of them? And it’s so hard to even find this album to stream, had to go to YouTube. Great guitar work, great bluesy rock vocals. Really dig it 4

Squams…

Great sixties album

Wasn't expecting this. Do people know about these guys? It's like if the Byrds slept with Chicago, and had a baby raised by Meatloaf. Teenage Fanclub must love them, power pop owes them big time. Some of the tightest rocking harmonies that've graced my ears. Every song short and sweet, only two breaking the 3 minute mark. Was this who The Monkees wanted to be?

I liked this album a lot. Good country style rock. Reminds me of The Dead more than anything, but I would so shorter on jams and perhaps a little more rocking. 4 🌟

Cool Album. Dig it.

Love the guitar parts and harmonies in this album. Lots of cool parts overlapping. Lead vocals are good though not too memorable. Songs are also good but not too memorable.

Great early psychedelic rock from the Bay Area. Sadly the bad never reached its full potential, but a nice glimpse of what could have been.

Surprisingly excellent rock album from a really talented band. It reminds me a little of a lot of things, a little rock and roll, a little country-blues vibe, with shades of CCR, CSNY and the Dead. Some of the more high energy songs can get a little ramshackle or rambling, but when they're focused, it's great music. I absolutely love the guitars, which are exceptional, and in league with some of the best in country rock. I also like the all-band/multi-vocal approach, propelled by a strong lead in Peter Lewis. Go to YouTube for the full album. Spotify didn't have all of it. Fave Songs: Hey Grandma, Fall on You, 8:05, Ain't No Use

Never heard of these guys before. A real find. A shame that some tracks seem to be missing from Spotify, I could easily imagine an alternative universe where the ones I heard would be as familiar to us as the Beatles back catalogue. There must be a story somewhere in how these guys never 'made it.

So good. 4 again

This album took a few listens to get but there's a lot more going on here than the first impression that it made. I like the three guitar thing and the fact that most songs were quite short, clocking in at under 3 minutes and one clocking in at under a minute. Unfortunately, there's something to be said for bands whose first album are their best album. But I think after a few listens the songs are well-crafter enough to give this 4 stars. It's a strong album with some good payout for multiple listens.

I don't know how I wasn't aware of this album, or group. It's just a shame the full album isn't on Spotify!

This album was all over the place and I enjoyed it. Last track was kind of stressful though and a few weren't available on Spotify.

Aww man, this album is great, but everything that happened after it is such a mess, I feel sorry for them.

Huh. This one really caught me by surprise! I love the sound, and it's really clean and well done! Never felt tedious or redundant at all. Got some good Jefferson Airplane, James Gang etc vibes... Would definitely listen again!

so spotify blacked out most of the songs, but this was pretty decent

Weirdly this album isn't fully available on Spotify or Amazon Music (there are some tracks, but they are mostly the 'bonus' tracks from a 2007 reissue). So be warned that if you listen on these services you aren't really getting the actual album. Was able to find it on youtube videos. Pretty great record! Something about this era and this style of music that always feels like coming home to me. I'm not a baby boomer that grew up with this stuff in my formative years (in fact, never heard this record before) - I think it's just that this era's blues-based rock is so foundational if you're a fan of rock music.

Straight out of the soul of 60s psychedelia, with boatloads of rock and roll tragedy on top of it.

This was a fine album. Good bluesy rock, great vocal harmonies and fine songs. Seemed fresh and new. I'm glad to have been introduced to it. 3.75 stars

very Kinks-like, I like it!

It was pretty groovy man.

Some good old 60’s blues

4/5 strong beatles vibes, definitely inspired by them. I like it!

Really liked it! kinda put it off for a bit since I was busy (and I kept trying to listen to it while writing my paper about the movie but had to keep pausing to watch the movie so I gave up) but I was pleasantly surprised! I liked the beginning of the album more than the middle/end tho, I will admit

Gran descobriment.

Old classic rock, I liked it

This album was fine. It didn't really blow me away but I could listen to it again.

This is what I thought that Zombies album would be more like - enjoyed this one more.

#374 Perfectly inoffensive San Franciscan psychedelic rock that just didn’t really have enough edge to really capture my attention. It probably didn’t help that I had to go to YouTube to listen to the full album which was interrupted heavily by ads. Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Listen before you die? 🫳 Fave track(s): 8:05 Rating: 6/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

3.5 down to 3.

The Beatles? Nah, never heard of them

Mostly reminded me of better music from the same period, but I still enjoyed this

bit of enjoyable psych rock but didnt massively stand out to me

Solid 60’s jam rock, but the difficulty of finding this album (in full) brings it down a star. Unfair? So were the reasons they didn’t last.

It's a decent psych rock album all around but then again, this is one of my favorite genres. I really enjoyed the instrumentals across the board, especially when you listen to the interlocking three-guitar attack that creates some really cool psychedelic textures. Tracks like "Omaha" and "Hey Grandma" pack a fantastic, high-energy punch that shows they could rock just as hard as any of their San Francisco contemporaries. The way they effortlessly blend elements of folk, country, blues, and pop into a trippy atmosphere makes it a really fun, varied listen. It acts as a fascinating artifact of the 1967 scene, and you can definitely hear why they were so highly regarded by other musicians at the time. Maybe I’m letting some cognitive bias creep in because I’m comparing to other psychedelic bands…as much as I enjoyed it, it doesn’t rise to the level of other albums from that era for me.

Bom, vale a pena conhecer mais

Enjoyable but won’t revisit

Replacement-level psychedelic rock of the late 1960s. Perhaps this rock was more novel at the time, but it is not very memorable.

Good; not great. Clearly influential on the emerging psychedelic rock scene. A 3.

Only a few of the songs were available on Spotify but they sounded pretty decent.

Some pretty good hippie rock.

I don't know if you can get any more 60s than that right there.

Æ þetta var ósköp boring eitthvað. Plötukoverið nokkuð smart og í raun allt í lagi glamr.

Definitely heard a lot of early The Who is this one. Heavy hitting drums, splitting guitar riffs, and tight vocal harmonies -- all produced on a record that feels about as 60s as it gets. Perhaps not super memorable, but still a great listen.

Love the short songs but we don't need to venerate every 60s psych album. Nothing stands out here.

This is good. Never heard of them before. Very of the rock 60s era.

This was pretty nice to listen to, but over very very quick. I thought something was wrong. Hard to find on YouTube Music. Needed to find a playlist through actual youtube someone thankfully put together.

Toffe sixties-rockplaat

Not my kind of 60s music, fine

Got that late 60's TV rock vibe but there's definitely some variety beneath the surface. Unfortunate that most of the songs are unavailable on some services but I was able to find the whole thing. Background on this band had some crazy drama, nearly an axe murdering and a nearly a half century battle with a power hungry manager just for rights to your own band.

difficult to find and easy to listen to

Wasn’t great, wasn’t bad. A solid three and something I probably would not actively seek out again.

3,5/5 Good 70's Rock

Average 60s album. Not on Qobuz fully but easy to find on youtube.

It’s alright but I won’t be returning

Not as I had hoped, a mash-up of Moby and Black Grape. This was a bit of a pain to listen to as the full album isn't on streaminng but managed to track it down and listen to a few tracks via the best of, which led me to a song which was them laughing in the studio as they tried to record a song with some puerile lyrics which was actually better than anything on the album itself

tbh i listened to this but cld not tell u a single thing abt it didn’t stand out to me it wld seem

Couldn't find it on Youtube Music for some reason, but from what I could hear of it, it seemed like a pretty generic rock album for the time

Only partially available on Tidal and YT Music so can't fully rate

Never heard of them before. They sound pretty typical of their time.

2,5 ster

It was alright. Sad what happened

Pretty good! On paper, these 60s rock and roll records should be right up my street, as I do think the musicianship on here is great and the songs overall have a good energy to them. But I just sort of don't really care about them (emotionally)? I've only just started to realise why The Beatles are so good, so another late 60s rock band probably isn't going to convince me that this is a 5/5 album anyway. Maybe objectively this is a 4, but subjectively it's a 3 from me. 'Hey Grandma' is a fun name for a song. It's the kind of music they'd have on at a bar you don't go to often, but like going occasionally for a change from your local haunt. You'd hear it once, think about how there was so much of this stuff from the 60s, and that maybe you should get into it (because it's good!); then the next song comes on, and you'd never think about it again.

Funky and fun.

Pretty standard piece of 60's music.

A perfectly adequate late 60's San Fran rock band. A good snapshot of the time, but wasn't that interesting beyond that, to me anyway.

Could only find part of the album. Easy to listen to but no standouts on the limited list.

Not generic nor does it particularly standout from its peer group. Certainly not the definitive Skip Spence.

Some of the faster moving rock jams - are just that...great jams with great guitar. Where they do to much SF psych - and try to be a poors mans Dead...they lose it.

3/5, vind hem best dik, ga hem vaker proberen

Leuke tunes, niks bijzonders. "A man without love is no man at all" Gen X prima.

Funny but ok

Blue-eyed soul. Not terrible.

I liked this. Kinda reminds me of a lot of artists from this psychedelic 60s era. Short and Sweet.

A little bored with this. Sounded very 60s

Some middle of the road 60s rock

This started off as "why on earth is this on the list", but slowly ascended into something I actually quite enjoyed. Maybe if I listened again I'd enjoy the first half more, but it is what it is.

It was good, but at some point don’t all these mid-tier psychedelic rock bands kind of start to sound the same?

Almost really good

Worse than similar bands coming from that era and scene. Not sure I get this one.

Not soothing, just gives you a headache. 3/5

Moby Grape feels like a mix of other bands from the time, but nothing terribly memorable. It’s not bad, but if I never heard it, I don’t think I would’ve missed anything. 6/10

I wasn’t sure if this band was from San Francisco but I could tell. Very reminiscent of the first Grateful Dead album. It is well executed but ultimately forgettable.

Good and jammy. Boomery

Not typically a fan of a lot of the music of this genre, but here's one that has the distinct hippy dippy sound of this era, and, I heckin like it. Maybe it's that this one is obscure enough in time since it hasn't shown up in the ensuing decades of boomer nostalgic slop, so it still feels less tread upon. Unfortunately can't get a copy of the full original, so can't rate this beyond 3.

This is indeed the birth of cool

ok honestly i never heard of these guys so i got like 5 tracks in and was ready to dismiss this as yet another mid at best psych rock album but damn did it pick the fuck up. i'm used to albums losing steam but this one gained it. it genuinely feels like they heard me talking shit and came after my ass. thats not to say the first third of it is like actively bad or anything, "hey grandma" is a solid enough opening and i enjoyed the (appropriately) bluesy "mr. blues", but it just wasn't really hitting til the wild panning on the intro of "omaha" slapped me round the ears. i think it does lose a little juice in the couple of tracks immediately following, but it builds back up again quickly and keeps goin strong thru to the end. i love the vibrato on the vocals of "sitting by the window" and "lazy me", the latter of which honestly just fucks in general, and "indifference" is a real high note to end on. being only half an hour long it's easy to go back in for another listen or two but i can't say i'm locking in for every track, so i'm going with a 3. it's a strong 3 tho. i feel bad for almost lumping these guys in with the electric prunes.

No. 165 Pretty energetic and fun for 60s music. Don't think I'd ever listen to it again though.

As another reviewer said, this album has basically all the right things. However, for some reason, I find it kind of boring and not very interesting. It is just a fine album.

I think there were a few tracks missing from the version on Spotify but I got the gist. Perfectly fine.

Enjoyable psychedelic, country rock from the mid/late '60s. Fits nicely along side the other SF bands of the era -- the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane.

Bridges the gap between garage rock and psychadelia but honestly pretty forgettable. I'm sure this would grow on my if I had more time with it though.

Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Very Good - A difficult one to find on streaming services. Classic psych rock. Hey Grandma, Mr. Blues and 8:05 are fantastic. Omaha is also good. I think the middle section loses a tiny bit of steam but this is high quality throughout. Changes rocks. Indifference is a great closer.

This is a weird listen cause I think I listened to a totally different album. I went to the album link that the website had and it didn’t have like any of the same songs so I looked on their Apple Music page and it was like genuinely gone. There was another thing it maybe could’ve been but that was like5 songs so it wasn’t that. So I just listened to this but I think it’s the wrong album. I’m just gonna rate it off that though cause I don’t really care enough to listen to another one of their albums. It was like fine I guess, but not really anything crazy. Favorites: does it matter?

Pretty listenable but doesn’t really stack up with those coming out with similar stuff at the time. RYM: N Saved a song: N

Interesting 60’s rock. No stand out tracks but no bad ones either.

Who knew 1-minute tracks were all the craze a full decade before the emergence of punk rock? I appreciate the songs being relatively short, because they aren't anything spectacular. Pretty much a perfect microcosmic slice of Western music in September 1967. Aggressive (but not hard) rock, rough lead mixing, group backing vocals spouting entire sentences in the absence of a lead vocalist (at times), distorted guitar. Now that's what I call psychedelia. It's by no means the best psychedelia of its time – not when the Doors, the Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, and others exist – but it simply and effectively communicates the genre across. Also, surprisingly good sound considering this hasn't been remastered (that I can tell). 8:05 makes for an early standout, largely due to the acoustic guitar making by far the cleanest-produced sound of any instrument thus far. Though to be honest, all of the first three songs are fairly good. They just lack substance. Though it's a bit of an unfair comparison, note that Sgt. Pepper's came out several months before Moby Grape, and the latter feels strictly like a downgrade in quality. You can't look at me with a straight face and tell me that the 55-second Naked If I Want To is good. Even the acoustic guitarwork sounds kind of messy and buzzy. In contrast, Changes is thoroughly enjoyable (peep that bassline) and deserves much more airplay than I'm guessing it's actually received. Great little psychedelia-inspired guitar solo (with weird percussion pattern) at the end of the final track, Indifference. 3/5 Key tracks: Mr. Blues, 8:05, Changes

Not bad

Forgotten according to the streets, cool piece of history from the psych rock era

Dated, but a very good version of dated. It sounds like it's from the late 60's, and it's a great representation of that time. 8:05 is the clear standout track for me.

enjoyable but not very memorable

I really enjoyed this debut album listen from Moby Grape! I’d never heard of them before but this music was totally up my alley and I felt like it was a strong debut for them! Overall, I enjoyed this psychedelic rock and roll album and I would listen to it again in the future!

Alright classic rock. Might remember band name, but probably not the sound or any songs. Inference specifically may have had a high pitch squeak in it that was particularly annoying

Psychedelic country/folk rock isn’t my thing, but this is better than most and you can hear the foundation of so many other bands that went on to greater heights. Maybe in an alternate reality where their story wasn’t so sad we would be talking about them instead of the Grateful Dead… 3.5⭐️

Good ol' psychedelic pop/rock.

This one has a few interesting moments, but overall it’s just as generic California 1960s sound as you could only imagine

Fine, most pop song was their best but don’t really see myself going back to this

kind of reminds meof CCR

Full album not available on Spotify. What I do hear wasn’t bad.

Favorite Track: 8:05

Some nice variety and occasional plucking but not altogether that different from a few better albums I've heard from the same era. Highlights: "Come in the Morning", "Ain't No Use"

not amazing but not bad Will I listen to again: 10%

An enjoyable listen. I favorited one song - Indifference - primarily for jam during the last 2 minutes. The project is reminding me how much I like the sitar-based jam sessions 60s rock songs. 3/5

This is fine psychedelic rock, but I have to assume this is from an early edition of the book and got cut later. Why would you not let the genre be represented by the incredible examples like Big Brother and The Holding Company and give this slot to something else?

Yet another 1960s album that sounds like all the others. This could be any nameless act from then. How would you know?

Quintessential old school rock vibes. This album sounds like how a thrift store record smells.

It’s a nice listen. I was dreading this, as I am experiencing 1967 fatigue after starting to listen to all these albums from the book. But it’s a nice record that I probably will revisit

I remember the name, bu none of i sounded familiar. Prettu good

What's big, and purple, and lives in the ocean?

not bad, but not remarkable. Perhaps the most remarkable thing is that I thought it was an album from 1975+ and it turned out to be 1967. The last song was good :)

Well apparently the rights holders for this album don't think it's an album you need to hear before you die, because I couldn't find it in it's entirety anywhere and had to listen to a transfer from LP to Youtube. But honestly, it wasn't bad. When the band decides to rock out ("Fall On You", "Come in the Morning", "Omaha," "Indifference") they sound pretty good, and when they don't, they don't, but there's more rocking than not. Even the non-rocking songs aren't bad and there's a lot of variety on this album. Overall, good enough that I'm going to check out the various compilations.

honestly, it's not bad. I just don't see myself coming back to it cause it's already been done so many times by other artists

This band sounds sounds like the Byrds, but not quite as catchy or interesting. Lyrics a little bland and cliched. Certainly pleasant melodies and all the overlapping vocals are nice. Some fun guitar on some of the tracks. Also a little Beach Boys-y. But again, not nearly as interesting or good. Maybe it was more groundbreaking for its time. Not a bad record at all, but I feel like I’ve heard this music elsewhere but better.

Moby Grape was one of those bands I have seen on lists for years but have never taken the time to listen to them. I get the appeal. They sit somewhere between Cream, the early Who and the Turtles. It had a lot of that classic rock feel but, though they claimed it, didn’t have the other aspects of the psychedelic movement from SanFran bands. Come In the Morning felt very Jefferson Airplane. I actually liked it more as the album went on as it felt more authentic later. Omaha was a banger, but Changes and Lazy Me were my key tracks. I have a feeling this was one of those bands that was good on vinyl but amazing live! If this album flips under my fingers, it just might come home.

Random thoughts: * Do we really need another jammy band from the late 60s on this list? I feel like we have definitely covered this genre already. * It was good music and I can see why some people probably loved them and the influence they had. However, I'm having a hard time seeing how they were much different from the other late 60s bands. * It was also annoying to have to listen to this on YouTube. * I would definitely listen again if it was easier to get a hold of.

Very fun one with some tight guitar and bass playing. Reminiscent of Grateful Dead somewhat. I didn't manage to find all the songs (I think I missed two), but the fact that I didn't feel all that compelled to find them probably means something. Higher side of a 3.

Oh boy, another album that's not on streaming! Those are always at least a little interesting, right? Well, this is probably one of the less interesting ones. It's a 60s rock album. I've talked about like 100 of these by now. This isn't special to me. This is definitely one of the more obscure 60s rock albums of the bunch, leading to some calling this a hidden gem. Honestly, I can kinda see why that is. This isn't a bad album at all, but it's also not great either. The music itself is good. I like some of the chord progressions and guitar work well enough. Definitely on the more "rockin'" side of things, you know? But the vocals aren't my favorite and the writing is pretty basic. This album takes more of a "larger number of smaller songs" approach, though "larger" in this case is still not a ton seeing as the album's only a half-hour in length. This leads to a lot of the album's ideas feeling... under-developed, I guess? Like, there's not much here that I can see staying in my head, which isn't exactly a sign of a great album. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Moby Grape is an album that exists. It's got some good parts to it, but I think the whole is a little underwhelming. It's not bad though. 3/5.

Ihan kivoi biisei.

Not bad, just kind of indistinguishable from better music from this era/genre. I could listen to this, set it down, come back to it, and not remember anything about it. I do hear some tones of the Dead in this though.

I’m not sure why Spotify took songs off the album but from what I’ve heard it was a good bluesy effort. I’m never mad at 60s rock with some blues & folk elements but it was just ok.

Another album that isn't available on streaming platforms, at least not completely. It seems legal issues have troubled this band from day one, which is probably why they weren't more successful. It's a shame too, because I really enjoyed this one after tracking it down on YouTube.

3.25 - 1967 may have been the best year for rock of all time, jussayin'. Fun and psychedelic and iconic harmonies in feeling and grit. Fav songs: 8:05 / Bitter Wind

Moby Grape’s self-titled 1967 debut is a solid pop-rock record for its era, but when judged solely on the music, stripped of the band's tragic backstory and 'what-if' legacy, it doesn't quite transcend its time for me. Sonically, it feels firmly rooted in the sixties; while I personally don't mind the aesthetic, younger listeners might find the production somewhat dated or 'old-fashioned.' It’s a good album, but perhaps not the timeless essential it's often cracked up to be. Three stars. 263/1001 142/263 albums reviewed were new to me

Very pleasant but didn't inspire me to listen to more Moby Grape

Pretty energetic and fun for 60s music. Don't think I'd ever listen to it again though.

expected another timely beatles clone, but honestly a very pleasant time that keeps it fresh. lacks some standout tracks, and it takes some trying to stream a listenable version of the album, but there's some good shit in there, def worth the time. favorite song is Omaha

Rating: 6/10 Decent collection of bluesy rock tunes from the 60's. Nothing more nothing less to me really. Favorite song was Omaha

Pretty fine folk rock sort of thing. Too many guitars make all the songs fairly busy. It was alright, nothing you can’t hear better versions of elsewhere, but there’s certainly worse out there

Not available on streaming services. Found a less than good copy on You Tube. Sounds like bog standard 60's psychedelic wannabe/folk music. I like psychedelic stuff. This isn't it.

I'd only heard Omaha before. The rest was definitely worth the listen.

Actually, a good album. Nothing really amazingly groundbreaking, but still a good album to sit and listen to.

There's a real appeal to this album, it's some really good 60s rock, with some good writing and the songs go for just as long as they should. But it's not an album that grabbed my attention. I might give it another listen but I wouldn't seek it out. It's good, still.

Fun, although I am not sure it holds up to one youtube commenter's claim that it's the best record ever recorded in the Bay Area.

I think I thought this band was more psychedelic

low-mid 3.5 stars

Nice- really 60’s type band. Notes of Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead in the music. I liked it.

Tidal only had a select few songs from this album for some reason?? The little bits i heard were lovely though.

i love this genre and vibe but have to say i didn’t find it to be anything special? mr blues was my fav so it started out strong and then i was like … what now

Probably one of the better psychedelic rock albums I've gotten from the 60's. Definitely can tell they're from California, which I think is helping (Although I'm not really a fan of Pet Sounds), along with the slight country rock vibes it's giving. Unfortunately, still not really my thing.

Hey Grandma sounds like a Helen Wheels prototype. Can imagine Paul digging this album quite a bit. Overall, I think it's just a solid SanFran psychedelic album. Not much to really complain about, but not much to really drool over either.

Standard, good psych rock stuff that has a interesting, tragic story behind it that's indicative of a lot of the troubles going on behind the scenes of the 1960s counter-culture. A lot of the tracks washed over me while I pored over the details of the band's history. I totally get the cult appeal, especially if you dug this out of a record bin and spun it. This is actually a band that's done a disservice by streaming as the go-to medium since they end up seeming so typical when played in concert next to the 60s heavyweights. Favorite Tracks: Fall On You, 8:05, Sitting By the Window, Indifference

I’ve heard worse!

Good flow. What i would want from a late 60s album. Blends Jam band and psychedelia.

At last, a decent album made by a Moby

A good album, but very uneventful.

While not being a masterpiece nor a mindblowing album, it was a pleasant dive into 60s roots rock.

This album was pretty decent. I liked the harmonies and that everyone in the band sang.

I like the music, but wouldn't go so far as to say that this is a particularily good album.

Nothing super memorable, but I’m surprised I had never heard of them before. Very 60s, very Beatles.

One of the lesser-known but still influential bands of the SF psych wave that crested in the late 60s.

Not bad

This was a fun and groovy album. It was a wonderful way to start my day and I would enjoy listening again.

Solid stuff from a band otherwise unfamiliar to me

SF psychedelic countryish rock from a band I'd never heard of before. Not bad but pretty standard for that scene. sounded a bit like buffalo Springfield and the grateful dead without the jamming. annoyingly not on Spotify (had to use Youtube) which unfortunately hurts the replayability and HAS to be affecting whatever organic discovery they might have

18 minutes of classic rock I'm astonished I've never heard before. Wonder why none of these tracks ever hit my local radio

Sounds a lot like The Dead. Beatles-like harmonies, Dead-like bouncing basslines, guitar harmony/counterpoint and strong, 60's rock drumming (a dead ringer for Ringo). Good. Influential? I dunno. I don't get the 60's psych scene -- I'm not sure what's psychedelic about it, apart from the drugs they surely did (no judgement!). This is a good time to make note that I have a distaste for the prominent guitar sound of this era, by and large. It's tinny and thin, even when run through a fuzz. It's obvious that better was possible with the tools available: Hendrix sounded like a million bucks with all the same instruments, amps and effects. Blue Cheer sounded better than this. Sometimes this quacking guitar works (CCR) and it certainly leaves space for the bass, but it's just a little bit gutless. Anyway, it's a pleasant enough album. I just gave the Eagles a 4-star review for an album I referred to as empty and well-made, so I'm trending in that direction, I guess. Let's just call Moby Grape under-appreciated these days and thank the fickle List that I didn't have to slog through another 1998 Brit-pop album. Odds are, I'll forget all the specifics of this one and just remember that Moby Grape wasn't too bad.

Perfectly good-sounding oldie rock album, up against some tough competition in 1967 but it still earns a listen

Nice discovery.

I liked it but it’s not memorable

Never heard of them before but it’s pretty good. A strong 3.

Good. Was it great? It was grape

Decent 60s rock and roll blues, this album feels a little cobbled together after the event

A good listenable album. I’d not heard of Moby Grape previously but their sound was in line with what I would expect from the time.

All in all some solid 60s rock. Nothing bad, nothing incredible. Best song: 8:05

Good but forgettable

An okay album, I liked 8:05 the most.

Really decent, fast, quick, short. Can't complain

That was allright, not a standout and I feel there was better stuff out there by 1967. 3/5

A prototypical Summer of Love album. Great harmonies and vibes, though none of the songs really struck me.

The only times i really noticed this album were when it finished (so short!) and when i thought 8:05 was going to be a v interesting cover of Edelweiss but alas. Not bad by any means but not really enough of anything to push it past pretty good.

I listened to this on a flight and it was great plane music. I also did fall asleep on said flight, but it was the kind of sleep where you’re still kind of conscious of your surroundings, which meant that this album was very present during my nap - that kind of cut-through deserves recognition. Listening again this morning, I think it’s definitely an album that will sneak into the rotation. I’m giving this 3 stars but know it’s really a 3.5 🤩

This was more enjoyable than I expected and it actually grew on me as I continued listening to it after a not very positive start. This is not really my type of music but quite liked Omaha and Sitting By The Window.

3/5, not my taste in music, but its nice in its genre

Leuk. Heel erg 60s. Verder weinig spannend.

Overall, pretty standard 60s California rock. I liked it. Probably won’t be revisiting, but not bad.

Oikein tervetullutta vanhaa hyvää rock n rollia.

Once you have saddled your band with the name Moby Grape there is only so much you can do. What's your ceiling...maybe Mott the Hoople? I don't get the hype, most of these songs don't seem to go anywhere.

There is a lot of passion in the music, but most of it still ends up being kind of generic. The music is pretty simple which can be charming but gets a bit boring at some points.

3/5. The psychedelic type of music is not the type of music I look forward to hearing. I enjoy both rock and English classical rock, vintage-style music.

Enjoyable

What a difference a day has made What a difference and more of the same

It was ok. Most of it wasn’t available, but liked what I heard enough.

This is a fun and very serviceable psychedelic rock album that is as tedious as the members of the band. Despite feeling very recognizable, nothing really jumps out, and this makes sense considering how fractured history, lineups, and contract woes for this band.

This was fairly bleh to me. Last album of 2025. Hopefully 2026 has some iconic albums to review!

It was decent for me but didn't stand out much among other bands from the same time period to me

good, sort of a country-rock combo, with "Omaha" as a particular standout. although the shortness of the songs prevents them from overstaying their welcome, it's also indicative of how the album is a little underdeveloped (eg: lyrically) despite some cool sonic ideas

Catchy, 2 minute pop and rock bops from a nearly forgotten band of the 60s. A nice little band discovery that might make for an interesting insert on a playlist.

Wish I could listen to the entire thing on Spotify, but I don't think that would change my opinion on it at all. Sounds like a run of the mill 60s album.

Great Beatles cover band!

Yep, sounds like late 60s San Francisco and the psychedelic scene... A dime a dozen it feels like.

Acceptable

I’m not really sure I understood the assignment, here. It’s alright, not too exciting. I’ll probably come back to it to explore the songs again but it’s pretty average.

Seems to be quite a middle of the road 60s album by a middle of the road 60s band. I think during their time their sound was much more popular, but unfortunately it’s become “the same as it ever was” in terms of late 60s psychedelic pop.

Riktigt stark trea ändå, kvalitet

Fairly enjoyable

It was middle of the road, but in a good way. Nice in a sunny bike ride.

Everybody just wants to be the Beetles. 5/10

The people who think these guys are on The Beatles' level are delusional. The songs are perfectly fine but they're not all that interesting, inventive, or memorable. I was hoping for much more.

I couldn’t finish it but it was cool. I’m dying.

Fun sixties frolics

I groaned when I saw yet another SF sixties psych rock album, but this actually wasn't too bad, though I liked side A more than side B. Certainly better than Skip Spence's solo album, which I remember disliking. A low three.

Great guitar stuff but incredibly generic singer, even at the time. I like the harmony singing and the acoustic songs are certainly the best ones. I feel like these guys are if the doors were worse and less psychedelic. Not too much else to say, just quite acceptable and average. Favourite songs: 8:05, lazy me, rounder, looper, bitter wind, sweet ride. Overall around 5/10

Some cool songs, nice music, not my favourite.

Went down smooth. Glad for the listen.

I missed these guys the first time. Still not quite getting what’s special about them. Maybe it’s me.

nulla di sorprendente, però bell'ascolto

Groovy

It's not bad but really the best Psych Rock songs were not sustainable for albums. A better choice would have been Nuggets but this list doesn't do compilations but then it runs into wanting to represent a certain sound. Either pick the best or leave it off entirely instead of picking the closest you can get with a full album.

A real surprise considering I don’t think I’ve ever heard of them before. Very much of its time, but a really impressive slice of late 60s San Francisco

I’m not sure where to listen to the rest of this album because Spotify only has the bonus tracks. From what I’ve heard, it sounds like the rest of mediocre 60’s psychedelic rock music. I guess there was once a time and place for this, and there are times when it’s okay for me today.

i've listened to way worse, way more annoying albums on this list. this isn't bad - i just fail to see how this stands out as a necessary text more than any other similar-sounding album of its era. i think the beatles have us pretty well-covered. at least it's short!

ah, more 60s psychedelic rock. just what we needed. honestly this was all right, but forgettable. favorites: hey grandma, changes

Groovy

3 is becoming my meh category. Not bad music, but not something I play intentionally.

8:05 // Come In The Morning // 3.5/5

Decent.

Pleasant rock from the 60s with a blend of country, folk and psychedelia

Ihan ok. Sellainen köyhänmiehen Led Zeppelin fiba. 3/5.

Interesting music with all members playing lead singer.

Pretty standard psychedelia? If there is such a thing. 3/5

Never heard of this band. From SF, during the psychedlic years. Truly never heard of this band.

Normal bluesy 60s. Not crazy for it, but what you hear is what you get. I guess paired with a beer it sounds nice.

It was pleasant. A good listen, nice quick little catchy tunes, but like nothing to revolutionize your life.

Solid, nothing crazy - good late 60s rock

Decent late 60's acid psychedelic rock that feels like a discount version of CSNY.

I would call this album “up-tempo psychedelic country.” It has plenty of rock and roll elements, too. An interesting choice for this list, as I didn’t find anything special or memorable about this. Didn’t dislike any of the songs, but still had trouble picking a song for the playlist. I enjoyed the two instrumental tracks the most, so I settled on one of those. The closest comparison I can make is a more refined Iron Butterfly with better song structure and a bit of country influence. Liked it, didn’t love it. 3/5

Less psychadelic than others, but solid rock of that era

Fine, but I didn’t see what made this one stick out of the crowd and earn its spot.

This was alright—definition of a “three star album”. What’s funniest to me is that this album has members of Jefferson Airplane on it. I’ve never seen a band where there’s so much weird lore and facts and spinoffs/iterations around them…you can’t escape them in any decade.

60's psychedelic rock is my least favorite genre so I was dreading this. It was a short album and had it's moments.

Moby Grape.

It has all the hallmarks of a 1960s album, but honestly, it wasn't horrible. Has a nice sounding country voice, and has a lot of inspiration from the Beatles. Overall, it wasn't that innovative. It is music that sounds like music, but I'd rather listen to jazz from that era.

Never heard of these dudes. Glad to be introduced to some excellent SF rock.

Me lembrou bastante o Surrealistic Pillow, do Jefferson Airplane. Tanto faz. Indiferente. Apático. 3/5

Going to California was a favorite,.great sound

very 1967

Alright

Enjoyed the energy they brought, some good lead action, too bad quality is so bad, decent listen though, liked it more than what I have in my mind of coming out of the 60's

My parents would probably like this. It's perfectly fine. However I am pining for any album from this century. Any album.

There's no real standout songs here, but it's a consistently fun listen the whole way through.

Psychedelic pop is not my thing. Thankfully it didn't make me uncomfortable like The Divine Comedy's Casanova before this.

Not sure how to describe this - bit of rock, bit of folk, bit of soul. Enjoyed it.

Pretty normal old rock album. The harmonies are pretty nice.

This felt like a quite generic blues album to me. Nothing really stood out, but it wasn't bad either. Not much more to say. Weak 3.

Some pretty good classic rock vibes. Just nothing that stood out really.

I enjoyed this 1960s California mild psych-rock a fair bit. Pleasant but not gripping.

it was okay

Pretty good aged rock

It took me ages to get around to listening to this because I couldn’t find it on streaming. My life wasn’t changed after listening to it. It’s fine.

Some of the songs from this album weren't available on Spotify, but I listened to the rest. Mr Blue had a little bit of a Rolling Stones vibe, but also a tiny bit of a Jimi Hendrix vibe, and the rest were pretty nice to listen to, and this must've definitely been pretty cool when it came out in 1967.

This was fine - pleasant enough to listen to and in the same vein as Jefferson Airplane for me. Nothing was annoying to listen to but nothing super inspiring either.

6/10 Pretty good, but nothing particularly memorable Highlight: Hey Grandma
