Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Moby Grape is one of those albums that feels like a time capsule of late 60s rock, full of energy, talent, and a sense of possibility. The band blend rock, country, blues, and pop with impressive tightness, often switching styles mid-song without losing their footing. “Omaha” bursts out with infectious energy, while tracks like “Hey Grandma” and “Fall on You” show off their knack for harmonies and punchy hooks. There’s a real sense of a band firing on all cylinders, eager to prove themselves. That said, while the album is packed with strong performances, it doesn’t always leave a lasting emotional impact. The variety is impressive, but it sometimes feels more like a showcase than a cohesive statement. The production is clean and crisp, highlighting their instrumental skill, yet a few songs blur together, especially toward the middle. It’s clear they were trying to do everything at once, which both shows their talent and stretches the album thin. Moby Grape stands as a solid, sometimes thrilling record that captures a specific moment in American rock. It’s easy to see why the band had such a buzz around them at the time, even if the album itself doesn’t quite reach the heights its reputation suggests. It’s good, occasionally great, but not quite essential.

Sadly, this album wasn't available on my streaming platform, though it is on YouTube. I suppose this is the American style of psychedelia rooted in folk stylings. It's a nice enough album to listen to, but while it seems to have been pretty well regarded at the time, I wonder how well it has stood the test of time. I actually liked it and I'm swithering between a score of 3 or 4 here.

Pretty cool slightly funky very of its time album, my first listen so cant compare to much.

Classic

I didn't hate this - it's very proto-Beatles but not in a derivative sense

see my paul revere & the raiders review as it's oddly similar

There is good stuff on Moby Grape's Moby Grape, but nothing really stood out to me.

i enjoyed this a lot more than i was expecting too!! it was sonically pleasing and a nice little slice of bay area history from the 60s. with the production and range on this thing i could hear how - if things had gone differently for poor moby grape - they might've had garnered a lot more acclaim. genre wise this isn't my usual speed so this is sitting at a high 3, but i still liked this as a little hidden gem of an album. highlights - hey grandma, fall on you, 8:05, come in the morning, omaha

Yeah not bad.

I'm totally unfamiliar with this band and, therefore, this album as well. I was positively surprised, as it gave me strong CCR vibes. However, there were not enough positives on this album to warrant a higher rating. 3/5

DNF sounds good but I got distracted. Will listen again later.

2.5 I thought this very solid collection of songs was largely forgettable. Rounding up

I had never heard of Moby Grape prior to this challenge, but the fact that this album made the “Uncontroversial Albums” list with an average rating of three stars had me a bit worried. Would Moby Grape be one of the weaker entries on this list? Turns out, nope – it really just is a three star album! The reasons why probably vary from person to person, but for me it’s a collection of good rock songs that just don’t do anything particularly unique or interesting. The fact that it incited a bidding war between labels somewhat perplexes me, but I guess they must have been confident fans of this style in the ‘60s were going to eat it up. As with many of my threes, it’s an album I wouldn’t mind being put on, but it’s probably not something I’m going to go out of my way to listen to. The fact that the full album isn’t currently on Spotify makes doing that extra difficult for me anyway! Highlights: Hey Grandma, Fall on You, Come in the Morning, Omaha, Changes, Indifference

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Not available

Few good songs. Very oldie. I liked it but didn’t blow me away. Overall: 3.3/5 stars

It charmed me

1. -Great Guitar 2. -Man am I ready for that washing board to hit 3. -Honestly, for the 60's, this hits well before it's time. I can hear a lot of inspiration from this. 4. -Bangs. Might actually listen to this one on my free time. 5. -First half isn't gettin me. -It's great music but the singer is turning me off still. 6. -My mans sounds a lot better here. -^ Yeah he's killin it. -Shout out to the harmony too. -Guitar reminds me of Hendricks. >FINAL THOUGHTS< Way ahead of it's time. If this came out in the late 70s or 80s, I'd just think it generic. But these guys really paved a road. I'll probably listen to Indifference again, and I'd do the same for Sweet Ride if it didn't have that drawn out instrumental end (that maybe they inspired?). 8/10. Moby Grape ran so we can walk.

You can hear the building blocks that bands like Love ran away with but there’s not enough to make this truly essential They’re one of rock’s greatest might have beens

It was decent enough, I’ve never been a big fan of that San Fran scene though. Again nothing I really disliked about it. Rating: 2.9

Spotify seemed to only have outtakes. But I dig it

Decent album; all songs are good. Typical sounds of a late 60’s rock band

spotify only has like 3 of the songs, another reason spotify sucks

This was alright. No songs really stood out for me, though. The music sounded good, but if there had been a good hook or two this probably would have rated higher.

Couldn't listen to all tracks, but what I heard was... fine

Not my style

Had never heard of them. This was a great album. Totally surprised me.

Good guitar and psych sound

Classic 60s pop guitar. Easy to get through in 20 mins

Liked this album. Favourite might be NAKED, IF I WANT TO. I don't think I'll ever listen to it again though, goodbye moby grape boys,

Very well done background music. I enjoyed it but wasn't blown away

Genre: Folk Rock This is one of these albums in the list that seem to be there because the artist/band name was very silly, and he existed around the same time as some other heavy hitters. This is a decent rock album, but it’s totally inconsequential. Just another decent rock album from the late 60s. Note: A majority of the original tracklist is only found on YouTube. Annoying. 3/5

This is one of my favourite era vibe albums. Like it’s a solid 60s album but I don’t think was anything special which is probably why it’s more lost to time unlike the other albums of the era. Idk, it was fine

Sounds beatleish

Ok, not my favourite old rock n roll record

Fíjate que no estuvo nada mal.

Enjoyed it a lot more than was expecting and a lot more than the other 60's pyschadelic/blues/rock one album wonders on this list. Would like to listen to more but unfortunately not all on streaming platforms and lifes too short.

Firstly, and most importantly, the band name sounds like a Yorkshire term for haemorrhoids. Ooooo I've got a reet moby grape. Rather than all-out psychedelia, It's more of a blues-rock affair, with some eclecticism via alt-country and folk. It took a while to take hold, but there are some fantastic ditties here. Not least 'Aint No Use' with it's busy country-style pickin'. And of course the folkier '8.05', the only one of these tracks I knew previously, which is wistfully magnificent. 'Naked if I Want To' is similar, a nice little interlude. It's an odd album all tolled, it does feel as though each band member has gone away and come back with their style; hence you go from blues to folk to country to psychedelia. It sounds like it was recorded over a period of several years. I think it tops many of the American rock bands we've been listening to in this era; and yet I still cannot fully get to like the album as a whole.

It was soulful, but really only liked it’s a beautiful day today.

Wasn’t too bad. Very 60s. Another band I’ve never heard of.

A taste of 60's rock music. Not bad at all!

If Led Zeppelin never went to Mordor. Really good guitar, Solid upbeat 60's rock classic.

Psychadelic 60s, very beetles. All over the place in terms of style similar to white album

I quite liked these guys. They had an interesting, complex rock sound, incorporating some folk and country elements, without coming across as too pretentious or hippie-ish. I guess for its time it would have been quite a revolutionary album. I'd happily discover more of their discography.

Moby Grape was a game Len Houmous used to play in the bath with a bunch of grapes. It was a lot of fun but quite unusual to the untrained eye. 3.1 4/10 Come In The Morning

I'd rather listen to the Band

A fun 60s blues rock album.

++: Hey Grandma, Fall on You, 8:05, Come in the Morning, Ain't No Use, Sitting by the Window, Changes, Lazy Me +: Mr. Blues, Naked, If I Want To, Indifference +-: Omaha, Someday 6,9/10

This was an odd one. All stellar reviews by various publications of the time, and yet it was not readily available for streaming, and the entire band has nearly fallen into obscurity. Part of me wonders why we needed yet another psychedelic rock type album on this project. Another part of me gets it, at least from a music history perspective (which, as I have said so many times, does not necessarily equate to being ESSENTIAL listening). This album really seems to straddle between the rhythm and blues of the 50s and 60s, the psychedelic sounds of the 60s, and the heavier rock sounds of the 1970s. You could almost thing of this group (at least on this album) as a proto-Led Zeppelin. The music was not bad at all, though the mixing at times left something to be desired. I think these guys brought something fresh to the table, but other bands ran with it and made it more of a success. This album is something good/okay that helped give way to albums that were great. A weak 3 for me, but a 3 nonetheless.

It’s an okay album. Didn’t have any songs that were overly interesting, but solid as a whole. 3/5 Might listen again

Have to give it 3 because they dont have the full album neither on spotify or youtube. Bits and bobs here and there. Also, it lacks emotions vs their european counterparts. This could be a 4 but no for those reasons.

Nice and short, nothing to write home about

crappy. 8:05 was alright.

3.5 short but solid.

Not much excitement here. The music was good. But I found myself turning down the volume because it was slow and simple.

3.1 Of all the 60s albums on here, this was certainly one of them

Not terrible, not great. Just some pretty standard 60s pop. Lazy me is quite good though.

Late 60s rock - it fits the genre. Nothing too crazy about this album.

Good musicality

Pretty generic 60's kind of music. Decent guitar, but overall generic... not sure why it would be on this list.

Yea not bad

Decent

Pretty good. Some blues, some psychadelic rock. Crunchy guitars.

Good prod, leagues above average 1967 album. Gives Kinks but less appealing at first listen. Hendrix minus EPIC shredding. Less rock'n'roll than The Sonics, which is a plus

I’m not sure the whole album is available on Spotify. Which is fine with me.

I get it. Its got that late 60s Americana feel. If it was on somewhere, I wouldn't necessarily turn it off. It has all of the elements of this kind of rock, but no songs stood out for me to come back to specifically.

Listened to on Youtube, as the album is absolutely butchered besides the bonus tracks.

Surprisingly better than I was expecting, good playing and songwriting, never overstaying it's welcome. Happy to give it a 3.

Standard fare 60s tunes. Classic 60s-style harmonies & instrumentation with a slightly psychedelic tinge to them. Nothing that particularly stands out in the crowd but perfectly listenable.

Perfectly good protocol-psychedelic rock. Assed the time.

Not bad unusual this

Solid 60's rock, still not very memorable but points for brevity

After living in London for a year I decided to return to Calgary. One of my friends at work (a lawyer turned teacher) gifted me this album. I had never heard it and whenever I put it on it brings me right back to the uk. Don’t listen to it often but a great reminder of what a lot of people were listening to and in to.

Cool album from a band I'd never heard. They certainly sound similar in some ways to early Jefferson Airplane, though the songs aren't quite as good it has that same early psychedelic rock feel. I'll probably give this one another try--there were certainly a few tracks I liked. A high 3.

It’s OK

Not bad just boring

Fun very sixties

This was a nice chilled album to listen to on a Sunday morning walk in the sunshine.

Not bad. Some great guitar playing. I quite liked the track Sitting By The Window. None to appreciate some older rock and roll. Touched on some good psychedelic elements I enjoyed.

This full album is oddly hard to find on streaming, had to search for a custom playlist within YouTube. Anyway, I don't think I've ever heard of this group. Perhaps they were overshadowed by the more mainstream psychedelic rock groups of the 60's. What makes this record somewhat unique I guess is the variety displayed. I immediately saw "psychedelic rock" on this album's review page and sighed, but this is a little more than that. A bit poppier, plus there's some country/blues influence as well, sounding like a less swampy CCR at times. Wasn't super noteworthy when it was all said and done, however. It seems that this group has been lost to time.

Never really listened to them before. Round up from 2.5

Good 60s stuff

Not bad classic rock. I don't think I have ever heard of this band until today and I'm not sure why that would be. They seem good enough to be more widespread. It's pretty chill classic rock, I would listen to this again.

Nice music

7.5/10

Short n sweet rock n roll good n fun.

Full album was not available

I really liked the album, especially the 2nd listen. You can really hear the San Francisco psychedelic sound--in the guitar leads especially. The band is fascinating to read about as well, a truly bizarre journey. I think it's more of a 3.5 for me and actually dropping to 3 as I did not retain any of the songs the next day.

It's short, simple, solid, but ultimately forgettable. An album this short really benefits from having a major hit on it, and this one just doesn't. It's a fun listen, but I don't think it needs to be on a list like this. I will say that the varying styles are fun, but again, the album isn't long enough for that to play any sort of major role in what's going on. Favorite Song(s): 8:05

It definitely has a sense of time and space and I listened to it three times to try and see if any of the tracks stood out, but none really did.

This album was fun. I really liked it. "Rounder" is a standout track. Wow was it catchy. This album was fun. Nothing insane on this, but very solid. Short and sweet! Actual rating....3.5. Liked Songs: "Mr. Blues" , "Fall On You" , "8:05" , "Come In The Morning" , "Omaha" , "Changes" , "Indifference" , "Rounder" , "Looper" , "Sweet Ride (Never Again)"

liked songs: front half This was pretty good. There was some decent songwriting, but I do wish some of the better songs were just a little longer. 3.5

Nice 60’s California folk psychedelia.

This is between a 2 and a 3. It doesn't do anything I love, but nothing i hate either. It's just a solid version of what it is. I'm feeling generous so I'll go with a soft 3.

Amazon does not have all the songs in the UK any way, so listened to Best of which has a lot of the songs on. Message to any Americans post Liberation day (Fuck up day) I do feel for you having a demented idiot with no knowledge of global economics, good luck with the recession

I had never heard of Moby Grape before but I had an idea of it might be and not surprisingly it’s an early psychedelic rock band. The stuff I liked I really loved but some of the other parts were just ok. Honestly I thought it wasn’t a perfect album but I really enjoyed a lot of it. I haven’t had enough time with it so go in depth but I’m sure an album like this would really grow on me over time. We will see.

Iam sure its great...

Moby Grape is a terrible name btw. first song, banger - playlist worthy. Only half the songs were showing up. For this to come out in 67 is cool. Understandable to be on this list. I hope to listen to all of the tracks eventually.

Nice sound - I have not listened to this one in a while 3/5 #musicsky #albumsky

Never heard of this before but automatically know what it will sound like. This is what im here for. I’ll never go back to this but is cool. It’s Moby Grape. I even listened to the bonus tracks. Now again. I need half stars. This isn’t a four. But it’s better than some of the threes. I have to give this a three.

Way less Moby than expected (I guess he just stole half the band name later in time). The grape is exactly what you would expect. But wait, is that some lemon in the mix? Another fun album but comes across very much as one with its time rather than creating its own sound.

Non-offensive 60s rock. Can't say I loved it or anything like that, but it was pleasant background music. 3 stars.

Solid 60s rock with a nice guitar forward sound

Just FYI I just listened to the whole album this directed me to and it is NOT the same album. Gonna have to go to the ol UTUBE. Not sure if it's like that for Spotify. Either way Moby Grape '69 gets a solid 3. Love the first song with the guitar. Some other songs have some good harmonies reminiscent of CSN. Some pretty solid 60's rock but nothing mind blowing. A solid 3.

It’s right in a sweet spot of a time, place and genre I really like. It’s nice enough and technically great, but I just don’t love the songs that much. I just prefer other artists of the time, I’m never gonna listen to this over Jefferson for example. The interesting wormhole here was reading about Skip Spence, who wrote the best tracks on this album, how he lost the plot not long after this after threatening to kill his band mates, then post sectioning popped out a really interesting solo album, Oar. Then that was his musical career done at 23. That’s a more interesting listen.

First listen to this band. Some nice tunes but no real direction

I enjoyed it. But I also can’t remember anything about it.

Fine, but forgettable.

Rockin

Some really evocative moments - esp. 8:05 - but the whole time I kept thinking I was listening to a really adept pastiche/re-creation of that moment. A totally unfair perspective, I realize. I bet their shows were fantastic.

Kind of an average hippie band, but not bad.

I like this better than the Dead, but it still strikes me as a bargain-basement Band (or Byrds). But I listened to 8:05 three times.

It's nice but nothing too special

De onde surgiu isso que nunca ouvi falar? É bom demais!!!

Turns out that the majority of the songs from this album have been removed from streaming services, so I am not able to review it in it's entirety. Considering this, I will give the album the middle, 3 stars. Out of the songs I managed to listen to, the album fits in with the sonicscape of the late 60s, but doesn't quite have the quality of some of it's contemporaries. There are some nice guitar solos and melodies on here, as was the style of that time, which I liked. What I didn't like as much is that none of the songs were memorable, there are no hits or singles which stood out to me.

Interesting early rock group, reminds me of the Beatles. I like some tracks like "8:05" and "Rounders" with a good instrumental mix, particularly the bass and guitar.

The album was fine, but reading the band's Wikipedia was much more interesting. If it was just based on that, I'd give it a perfect score. 6/10

A competent psychedelic artifact with undeniable harmonies and textural richness offering more historical significance than genuine musical revelation.

Jimi Hendrix - late 60’s feel

solid album, sucks that most of it isn’t on streaming. but Moby Grape has to be one of the worst band names i’ve ever heard lol

Adequate late 60s rock. No more, no less.

This was just fine for a late 60s rock album. Better than I was thinking it would be.

Maybe I'm lucky enough to have been born at a time where I've only been exposed to the good artists and albums from the 60s and 70s, but I just find this so generic. Nothing stands out, the vocals are fine but not distinctive.

Pretty run of the mill 60s rock.

A solid 2.58 rating from me. Which is 0.01 higher than my average across the first 425 albums I’ve reviewed. I’m glad I went to the relative effort of finding it on YouTube and was rewarded by some lovely blues guitar work as the album rocked along nicely. Unspectacularly likeable.

Good album I'd never heard of these guys. Liked a few of the tracks good older guitar based music for sure

I thought it started strong, the first couple tracks I enjoyed a lot (at least, on the version I listened to: 8:05, Rounder), a nice mix of psych-folk rock and classic late 60's rock. As I'm writing this I now realize the version of the album I listened to (YouTube Music) is missing a majority of the tracks (copyright?), so it's hard to give an accurate assessment of the whole record. What I heard was good, though some tracks sound a bit too generic to the genre, so do I need to hear more?

Not bad, not overly fantastic either.

Sounds very much of the time. I liked the harmonies on this album, but not much more stood out to me. Maybe because the songs are quite short, they feel a bit forgettable. Favourite songs: 8:05, Changes, Indifference, Rounder And why did I hear “The Wheels of the Bus” at the end of Lazy Me, haha

Seemingly very classic 60s psych rock. Skip Spence rules. This was okay for sure.

Nice music, but nothing mind-blowing.

Owasso following my kids around who were sometimes my cats. The spiders were afraid of the cats. And someone almost drowned in this all young adult dormitory. There was no initiation it was a school. But there was a teacher. She was a very large woman. She was giving us all various exotic foods. Buttering us up really bc then we went to her garage. Eric and Joe were there through most of it. Joe was being an asshole. The food turned into drugs and it was over when this native man grew more and more violent and then struck me.

Sounds good but not essential. For a change I liked the bonus tracks better than the original album. I usually don't like bonus tracks. Favorite song: Looper

Forgettable

I enjoyed this. Not a bad album.

The boys on the cover look like they smell like feet. Ok, this gets better as it goes. Rounder and Looper actually work pretty well. This has some good moments.

почему половина альбома заблокирована в спотике/ютубе?

3 Well, this has officially been the hardest album on this list to track down so far - I even had trouble finding a complete version of the album on YouTube. I did finally find that though courtesy of an obscure Youtube channel entitled 1001 Albums Journey - is that one of you guys or gals or nons here? Shoutout to you if so. Supposedly a lot of that has to do with the group’s manager, Matthew Katz (also manager of Jefferson Airplane), who essentially scooped up all the rights to the band’s music and imagery out from under the noses and has been incredibly restrictive of their usage ever since, an act that has apparently limited the success of the band to a pretty significant degree. So, maybe that’s why I’ve never heard of these guys, but in my opinion, they partially have themselves to blame, between both unremarkable songwriting and the dumbass name that is “Moby Grape”. That’s not to say that I think this album is bad, because it isn’t, but it very much feels like a slice of the era without anything going for it that sets it apart from its contemporaries. Can you tell me one thing that this album does uniquely? I certainly can’t. I do think that this album overall skews toward the better end of this sort of sound, but only by so much. Also, what was up with the runtimes here? I appreciate these guys not dragging anything out, but half of these songs feel like unfinished thoughts - there’s quite a few that don’t hit the two-minute mark, and one that doesn’t even hit one-minute. And it’s not like these are interludes either, they just feel like songs that they ran out of ideas for halfway through. That all to say, my personal favorite songs here were Hey Grandma, 8:05, Omaha, and Indifference, but really, I think those are just the only ones I can recall looking back on now. In summary, decent album, but nothing special. Matthew Katz aside, I see why this group’s legacy has been lost a bit to time.

Hard to find in one piece on the various streaming services. Diverse but quite standard for the time.

Kind of middle of the road for me, suis desolé

Rock psychédélique qui s'écoute bien. Pas le meilleur mais loin d'être le pire du genre 7/10

60s psych rock. Nothing wrong with it but I didn't find it all that remarkable either. Had to piece it together on YouTube because Spotify only had part of the album.

Very Bluesy, very difficult to find a full copy. Had to get mine from a shady dealer in a digital back alley next to a virtual peep show, while a derelict server sat in a puddle of its own fluids begging for spare bytes.

Never heard of this band, but what a little gem. Some great songs on this album.

The Good: Turns out we are not hunting whales! The Bad: We are not making wine out of grapes either… The Ugly: The album cover… So far, every time that I’ve been presented with a band I am not familiar with, at least the album art has proven to be something interesting to look at… not this time. Then you go and spend some time reading about the band, and find out that the album photograph was taken by renowned photographer Jim Marshall, and that the little “flip the bird” on the washboard had to be airbrushed out… Though this is nice trivia knowledge, I still don’t like the photo. So what about the music? Nothing wrong with it, just too much here, and then, too much there… You can hear these cats are true musicians, but you get the feeling they are trying too hard. Then you read all the trials and tribulations this band went through, and you start understanding that, sometimes, life is just a bastard. For some reason, several songs on the album were greyed out.. guess there still are disputes about the song rights… even half a century later. 3*, and I am giving those out of sympathy, because the album is closer to 2 1/2*

A Beatles era rock and roll band but with more Californian beach boysy harmonies. Went by quickly, seems a little bit dated for 1967 which isn't great considering, I guess it's probably more of an example of the actual time than of bands pushing the envelope at that time. Not much more to say, not something I'd particularly go for but inoffensive. 2.5 but I'm leaning towards 3.

Quite a few of the tracks weren't available to me on Netflix. Decent enough actually, really nice to have on in the background. Jefferson Airplane are better. Somewhere between a 3 and a 4.

Thought this was pretty decent. Easy listening but cool. Great blues sound. I do think that ultimately it is probably a bit forgettable though 3.5

No mala mezcla entre rock y country, pero la verdad me pareció algo genérico y terminó aburriéndome un poco.

This was interesting. Its fun hearing psych rock from the 60's SF scene. Nothing really called to me. It felt somewhat generic, but overall fine.

Really not sure about this one. Not psychedelic enough…

Not my favorite, but not bad. I can see how popular they might have been had circumstances been kinder.

Like, it’s okay, but I do not at all care about this album.

Never heard of them but a fun typical 60s rock album.

Solid 60s rock I guess, not sure I would bother to go back to it

Pretty good late 60s SF sound. Nothing amazing.

I don’t think the version on Spotify is the full album. What is on there is pretty okay tho

This was decent enough classic rock sounding stuff, not too much to grab the ear, probably won't return.

Was missing a lot of tracks unfortunately! Pretty pleasant though, solid tracks throughout. Missing one or two truly special songs but I still really enjoyed it. 3.5

Strangely, I like this a lot more now than when it came out in my youth. Not bad, and the guitar is excellent.

Cool 60s

Medianamente disfrutable pero bastante olvidable, nada demasiado llamativo. 61

When I saw that the genres for this album were Country and Psychedelic Rock, I got worried that they would sound like my least favorite band on this list, The Byrds. However, thankfully they sound more like the CCR, The Beatles, or any other 60's rock band that can write songs that are at least semi interesting. Speaking of semi interesting, these songs are just fine. Nothing here really stood out to me, but there also wasn't anything bland or terrible. It was all just good, nothing more, nothing less. It is a little weird that almost every song is between 2:00 and 2:30. I feel like they could have let some of these breathe a little bit more. High 3.

Okay, but certainly not outstanding. Autoplay gave me I Hated The Day I Was Born by John Lee Hocker afterward, and that was a really nice discovery. So I might be ending this review somewhat too much on a high note.

Good guitar work, and very reminiscent of "The Who."

Felt extremely basic, from the 5-second guitar solos, to the simple keyboard arrangements, and almost entirely quarter-note percussion beats.

Interesting if a little samey!

Reminded me of Austin powers. Not offensive but didn’t stir any emotion either!

I had never heard of the band Moby Grape. Of course I was young child when it came out, so that probably has something to do with it. I really, really liked the first song 8:05, but the rest of the album was just OK for me. I’m giving it three stars on the strength of the first song alone. The album was enjoyable enough, but probably won’t give it another listen.

that was fine. not as exciting as some other 60s san fran psychedelic music i've heard but i generally find that genre pretty interesting by default so it would be hard for the music to be bad/boring to me. but i wouldn't say this exceptionally got my attention or anything.

60s SF band. Okayish

Pretty good late 60s psychedelic pop/rock, but not anything out of the ordinary.

A blend of the most common musical ideas of the 60’s. They do those ideas justice but not much else.

Never heard of Moby Grape before, the blog review made it sound like this group was not around for long. The music was good, I think I liked Indifference the most. A cool blend between rock and blues, I think? Interesting to read that all members of the band were songwriters and vocalists.

Very generic 60s music. Not bad, not great. IF you like the sounds f the 60s, especially the biritsh invasion, this might appeal to you

6.5/10

Some cool tracks, never heard of them!

je ne suis pas vraiment fan , mais ce n'est pas mal

Most of the album is unavailable on Apple, Amazon and Spotify.

Unremarkable entry from the later 60's. Had heard the group name before but had never listened to their music. No regrets

pretty good but left no real impression on me, and didn't seem particularly noteworthy or significant for the era. guess you had to be there!

I don't know why, but this didn't really grab me. It had some pretty nice moments here and there, but nothing stood out to me. 3 stars

That was groovy!

Nice 60s album 6/10

This was pleasant

This is another SF-based Summer of Love rock album. Wikipedia classifies this as psychedelic rock, and I definitely don't disagree, but it's a bit less on the experimental side and a bit more mainstream-ish (like an American version of early The Who or something, "Fall on You" kind of sounds like a Who song to me). It's solid overall, and "8:05" is a really strong highlight, it really showcases the lead singer's voice on a slowed-down song. "Changes" is also super unique and feels ahead of its time a bit. That said, I know that this one is going to stick with me a ton, there isn't a ton else that really stands out to me (compared to like Surrealistic Pillow, which is from the same era and is stronger to me). The band seems like an interesting one though. This album seemed to do pretty well, and then they proceeded to pretty much immediately fall apart, with drug addictions and mental illnesses and legal issues with their manager. It seems like they hung on in various iterations for awhile, but never quite topped this. This is probably in the 3.5 range, it's definitely a solid album, but I don't think there's quite enough for me to round up. For record keeping purposes, very little of this is on Spotify for some reason, so there will be some missing songs in the playlist. Favorite song: 8:05 Other: Mr. Blues, Fall On You, Come In The Morning, Omaha, Ain't No Use, Changes, Lazy Me, Indifference 10/26/24

The record feels like a mix of tight riffs and loose energy, blending rock and folk with a hint of psychedelia. The harmonies are smooth, but there's a roughness in the guitars that’s hard to miss. It brings to mind early Byrds or maybe Buffalo Springfield, but with more swagger. The songs move fast, almost like they’re eager to be heard but not lingered on. It’s a bit all over the place, but in a way that’s strangely charming.

Mid Kinda not in the mood

3 - this was so short that I didn't have anything to dislike

OK 60s rock.

Almost a 4 but there was nothing prticularly special

I don’t like the genre but the guitar work was enjoyable.

Nice 60s guitar pop Some nice songs: Ain’t No Use, Come In The Morning

Typischer 60er Jahre Psy-Rock

At moments they are like a pumped up Byrds. The Band with actual motion. A fractured take on the original classic (the 50s) rock. Harmonies. Guitar lines galore. Wrongfully lumped in with their psychedelic SF brothers and sisters. This one's a grower.

Not on Spotify

4 tracks were missing on Spotify, even more missing on Qobuz. The remaining 9 track were not very interresting. Barely adequate as background music.

Yeah, nice enough.

Thought I was going to thoroughly dislike this but actually enjoyed it. Jam band tunes without the boring jams.

Sounded of it's time. Wasn't bad though.

***An ok album

Never heard it before today but found it unremarkable. Sounds a little bit on the wrong side of history when it comes to sixties counterculture, alongside The Mamas And The Papas perhaps.

I've never heard of them, and I don't think I've heard them either, so that's always an interesting prospect. Not the most distinctive band in the world, I'll admit, but a decent sound overall, and I particularly appreciate how brisk and short nearly all of the tracks are. I think "Mr. Blues", "Omaha" and "Changes" were the highlights on this album for me. I can see the connection (style wise) to the Grateful Dead, which might be part of why I didn't really connect to this album (in much the same way I've never particularly enjoyed the Dead). Bummer for them that all the hype and Columbia's poor marketing kind of torpedoed their fate.

Enjoyed the wiry bluesy country rock vibe of this. "Hey Grandma" is a great twist on the "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" theme. Great too to have different lead singers. Still, not sure why this album is on the list.

Above average SF hippy rock stuff. Cool name, cool vibe. I dug it.

Overall it's not terrible but I didn't find it to be super interesting, also on Spotify 4 tracks are unavailable which I had to source on YouTube

Mielenkiintoista rokkia, kantri mausteella. Vähän Jimi Hendrix tulee mieleen kitarariffeistä. Parhaat: Ain't No Use, Changes, Indifference

Call me Ish-Malbec.

I echo the sentiments of some of the other reviewers when it comes to Moby Grape. It is a perfectly fine album, with some nice guitar playing and vocals. It has that pleasing 60s style and tone. However, it is honestly not that interesting to listen to. It just sounds like nice background music really.

Didn't blow me away but nice 60s rock with that warm sound of that time. I likely could've given it a deeper listen and picked out more but for what I heard, I liked it but don't know if I'd hunt it out again.

It's 1960s rock. Never heard of it, but it's quite solid. Problem is I've heard so much like this before it. So I find myself thinking about other music. Great track lengths. Might try to give it another chance some day. Might forget to do that.

Most of the songs are not available on spotify but I found a playlist on youtube. I'd never heard of this band before but it sure was an interesting listen. Some of the songs were fantastic, but some were lacking.

Hadn't heard of them before, unlikely to remember what they're like in future.

incomplete on spotify

Good from what I heard.

I could barely find a way to listen to this and then it went way too fast. Most songs stopped before you could really get into them. I really liked “Lazy Me” and think it could have been something great if they had kept going for at least two minutes. Other than track briefness, my complaints are few. They are, in all other areas, on par with their contemporaries. There were moments when they sounded better, some worse, but mostly on par. I would have liked to enjoy this more. 3/5

Groovy. 3

Sounds like early era The Who with slightly more blues influence. I thought it was a good self titled record, but it didn't really do anything that I found deserving of being on this.

Sounds like the late 60's

I liked this, some toward the end weren't as strong. Nice 60s grooves.

01) Hey Grandma – 6,5 02) Mr. Blues – 6,5 03) Fall on You – 6,5 04) 8:05 – 8,5 05) Come in the Morning – 6,5 06) Omaha – 7,0 07) Naked, If I Want To – 7,5 08) Someday – 7,5 09) Ain't No Use – 7,0 10) Sitting by the Window – 7,5 11) Changes – 7,0 12) Lazy Me – 7,0 13) Indifference – 6,5 TOTAL: 7,04 (70/100)

Not bad. On the whole, a band I’d like to hear more from.

Like it, but nothing stood out for me. 3/5

bro what..... hey grandma- 5 mr blues- 5 fall on you- 4 8:05- 6 come in the morning- 4 omaha- 5 naked if i want to- 6 someday- 4 or 5 aint no use- 5 changes- 4 lazy me- 4 or 5 very forgettable stuff 👍 its ok though

Interesting….

Mont Grape is just good late 1960s rock. There is nothing mind blowing but it’s all very good. However at 19 mins, it’s not an album. It’s an EP and that’s the only thing keeping it from 4 stars. 7.6/10

Feels more rhythm and blues influenced than some of their commentaries. Songs like Someday make me really glad to find artists like this, but it just isn't enough for me to want to revisit the entire album.

Perhaps on the list more because of the story of Moby Grape’s rapid rise and fall rather than how good the actual album is. I mean it’s a solid entry from the storied year of 67’, and it’s a fun listen while it’s on, but it doesn’t really linger in the memory once the needle comes off the record.

It was solid, but nothing special. I have no lasting impression of it and doubt I'll think of it ever again. But, on the other hand, it wasn't bad at all. It just exists.

Short and sweet tracks but everything so fleeting that nothing sticks.

Wow, this is a really impressive album--truly a tour de force. It's especially shocking because I have never heard of Moby Grape before. Their name is remarkably bad, but the music is wonderful!

Ok. Probably not listen again though

This is good, but nothing that makes it a 'must listen.'

3.5/5. Good. I don't think this is anything amazing, but I'm a fan of this type of music.

Kinda meh.

Soild 60’s rock album, good mix of psychedelic and country rock, worst at least 1 listen.

Pretty good background music but not really something I would seek out.

Indifference is how I would describe this album.

I think they are objectively good musicians. I just didn’t find the sound that compelling, it felt very similar to other things.

Alright this album ain't bad, some 60s rock stuff, but I don't think it's particularly great. Just sits in that okay to good range. Some really cool sections

This is the fourth late 60s album in the last five assigned, so I think it suffers quite a bit from not being as distinctive as the previous three. I think I've heard this sort of stuff before and even listened to the songs available on Apple Music twice to give it a fair shake. Surprisingly I seemed to enjoy the songs that I had to go to YouTube to hear. Wish I could have heard the album properly.

I do like it when albums from the 60s aren't annoying. Slightly perturbed by Spotify including bonus tracks but omitting album tracks though.

So ... this album is not available on Amazon Music or on Spotify. Found it on YouTube instead. It's kinda what you expect out of late 60s music. Bit of a Beatles feel on Hey Grandma but otherwise it's pretty eclectic - blues, bluegrass, country, folk. I hear a lot of other bands in their work. Naked, If I Want To and Sitting by the Window are my favorites but overall I doubt I'd listen to it again.

Fits perfect in between Montery and Woodstock. Nice Album in context of time, but nothing real special. I expected Country Joe McDonald or The Holding Company jumping in the line :-)

I guess for the time it was good. Sounded similar to the rest of the 60s.

I listened to this 3 times and it made very little impression on me. Another one of the meh American records on here from that era. Not bad but not great either

Another album that was a pleasant lsiten, but by the time it was over I wasn't able to remember a single song

Neither as interesting as Moby or as tasty as a grape

You can hear the passion, but that is no-hit album.

Moby Grape What a mess. My provider did not have the album listed in full. Just some tracks. Not the best tracks. I listened and came away nonplussed. This I should listen to before I die? I'm not hearing it. So I tried again, then noticing only tracks 3, 7, 9, 13 and one other. Where's the rest? Who is this fractured group? Wikipedia had headlines that sounded exciting and tragic, so I went down a rabbit hole of wonky weird crazy stuff. Gifted musician with mental breakdowns fueled by LSD, asylum occupations, late night recording sessions, band support despite their absence and just weirdness. That's one of the 5 lead singers in this 5 person act. So, I listen again, this time on YouTube - and I haven't a clue. What am I listening to? It's eccentric? Oh, psychedelia More Wikipedia. I was wrong. It's not an album to listen too before you die, it's a symphony of lost potential played out in reality to read up on before you die. Court cases, squandered cash, drugs, good folks passively watching malfeaience played out in front of them, a crooked manager, albums mismanaged and still the group manages to make musical successes. Frantically. Erratically. Despondantly. It's a mess. The band that is. It's also mesmerising. I listened to more tracks and albums and I just can't quite comprehend how so much potential became so decayed. It's a supergroup that never got out of its toddler stage of rebellion. I think it's a 2 stars album, what I could find, but it's a four star story. So, it's getting a three from me.

Fun little country-rock album. Nothing in particular stands out but it was a pleasant listen for sure.

Very good

Un son emblématique des années 1960.

I thought I was going to hate this. I didn't hate it. It's OK. Not great but OK. Bob Mosley's bass work is fantastic. The songs are economical and make sense. Still not a fan of the jangly psych county guitar sounds that was so prevalent in the 60s. Overall, fine.

Shades of Hendrix. Ok.

Grateful Dead x The Mamas and the Papas hybrid

this is straight up alright.

The internet has been really wonky for me today, this site, other sites, my phone, everything. Maybe we got hit with a low-grade EMP. Anyway, I looked this one up on Apple Music, and there's a version of it that contains only one song from the actual album, then a handful of bonus tracks, and they are numbered correctly but 90% of the album is just missing? I'll have to circle back on that, but I pieced together what I could from a greatest hits, which was maybe 65% of the album, and it's decent. Another typical '60s rock album though, nothing very special. Not worth digging harder if it's not readily available, I'd replace this one. Favorite tracks: 8:05, Omaha. Album art: Cool guys chilling on the street, looking sort of tough but also like refined art school hippy dudes. Label stamp is cool, this is a solid cover, especially compared to most band photo covers. 3/5

Solid little folk and psych record. But it feels like for every song that I liked such as '8:05', 'Come In the Morning', and 'Lazy Me', there was a song that completely passed by without leaving any impact at all. I chalk that up to the immediacy of each of these brief songs, they either hit with a strong idea right off the bat or come off as "incomplete". Still, I loved the harmonies here and the guitar and bass playing were as tight as I'd expect out of a blues rock-y type psych record from around this time (especially on the outro to 'Indifference', one of my favorite musical moments here).

I couldn't listen to all of this on Spotify, but what I could listen to, I liked for the most part. Pretty good old/classic rock. 3/5

Moby Grape sounds so incredibly 1967. Nothing they do is particularly better than their contemporaries or many imitators that followed, but it’s interesting how thoroughly this band got left behind in the era and rarely mentioned. Maybe they lacked the one hook or earworm that would make them memorable and help them stand the test of time?

Fun to listen but didn't find it memorable

Classic 60s release

Solid Hippy Rock

never heard this before. probably never will again

Li my red d

Spotify didn't have all the songs available. It was kinda forgettable from what I listened too

nice mix of bluesy rock and rock and roll 3.3

87/1001

(Yawning, and waking by the end of the album) Well, that's how hey made music by the end of the 60s.

So close to being good.

Some pretty nice songs

Despite not finding the full album anywhere, what I could find was pretty good. It sounded like the 60’s.

took me longer to cobble together tracks from this album than it did to actually listen to it. standard 60's era psych rock but nice guitar and vocals.

I enjoyed listening to it while it was playing, but the album felt so similiar to everything else I've heard about in the same genre and era that I understand why I haven't heard of them before now. Not bad, but nothing to set it apart.

Perfectly acceptable music

This album felt like listening to a radio show of lost gems from the '60s. I'm surprised all 13 tracks were by the same band. There's pop, hard rock and country rock. Nothing earth-shattering or particularly inventive but all of it was enjoyable. I'm a fan of this style so I'm always happy to put a band like this on in the background. I thought the hard rock songs were the strongest.

Short and sweet! Quite enjoyable. Not sure why I’ve never heard of them.

I don’t think Spotify has the right version of this. But what is there is pretty decent. I’ll have to find the original release though.

Non offensive folk poppy stuff, but not memorable

Not the most memorable thing in the world, some solid tracks here and there. Don’t think I’ll be revisiting them though.
