Who's Next

I loved a lot of the songs on this album. But then a few of them didn't really click for me. That's my experience with The Who in a nutshell. Still a great album, though.

This is a good album, and one I've listened to before! I would say 7/10, so I'm going 4/5.

Who's Next scratched that classic rock itch. The Who created extremely good, reliable, energetic rock music throughout their career, but this album is probably The Who at their finest. Several of their biggest hits are on this album. Often I'm already over an artist's top hits at this stage in my life, but there's something about "Won't Get Fooled Again" that's timeless. I didn't realize I knew the song "Bargain," which made for a fun listen. 4.5, but I just don't love it as much as Tommy.

So while I believe that The Who is very deserving of several places on this project, I've questioned a couple of the specific album inclusions; it's definitely resulted in me leaving some average reviews for The Who. That said, a The Who album like this is what I've been waiting for! This album shows off The Who at their prime. Several of their most epic songs are on this album (two of which are the bookends of the album). And even the "less epic" songs on the album are outstanding. This is just an incredibly well-crafted album full of great musicianship. It would probably be the album that, in my opinion, marks when The Who officially cemented themselves in the big leagues, and ultimately as rock legends.

The Who are a band that I remember listening to as a teenager and thinking they were a bit naff (except Pinball Wizard - I always liked that one). Since then, I’ve listened to Tommy in full and it’s great, so today’s album had be optimistic. Thankfully, it is indeed a good album with really nice rock riffs throughout. The better songs do seem to be bookended as a the first and final tracks, but it does remain quite enjoyable throughout. Honestly, I don’t know why I disliked them as a youngster.

It is a pretty nice classic album. Has 2 of my favorite songs of all time Won't Get Fooled Again and Baba O'Riley.

This album is actually great! I think I’ve heard the beginning of the first song so many times but never heard it all the way through

Great album. Baba O'Reilly is the best, and while not as good, the other songs hold up.

It's at least a 4 for Baba O'Reilly alone. The whole thing still sounds fresh.

I feel like this should be a five. I even own this album. But it's never quite clicked with me (but is still obviously a great album).

Starts and ends very strongly, the mid section had some less impactful songs but overall this has some great, classic tracks.

Probably my favorite album of theirs. Some great songs. They're not all totally awesome, but there's no bad ones. The bass has a really nice feel to it. Favorite song: Baba O'Reily

Compared to the last two Who albums I've listened to on here, this shows their complete transition to arena rock, and I feel they're that much stronger for it - the sound is bigger, the songs more fleshed out, and the listening experience much more enjoyable. There's a couple of staple tracks on here, but the album as a whole still works well around them. Definitely the best Who on here so far, not a doubt.

One of the best opening songs ever <3

Starts of STRONG(as in probably one of their best tunes strong) and ends strong. The middle is kinda middling.

I don’t know if the middle sagged, or if those songs in the middle just suffer from being squeezed between some amazing songs in the opening and closing, but either way, the middle feels lesser than the rest of the album.

Pretty formulaic, but a pretty good formula. Good drums throughout, liked the album intro via the Baba keys. Prefer the slightly less bombastic Quadrophenia overall but I think this still stands up as a good straightforward 70s Rock Record.

Got some good songs, doesn't have enough bangers to get 5 but 4 is good.

The Who sounds a little bit like the Beatles, I know it's an English rock band, don't know much about them, not to say that I didn't like them, on the contrary, very pleasant music.

'Who's next' is what I think when most boomer rock comes up on this list. This can stay though. Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again are proper bangers in particular. Love those synthy sounds. Great artwork too.

Ngl, when I saw that this album has been tagged with a "hard-rock" label, I was low key dreading listening to it! But this was surprisingly fun! I liked the bluesy undertones in what I would otherwise call "screamy music". 🙈😅 (The screaming wasn't too bad though!) Hard rock might never be my goto genre but listening to this album has made me excited enough to at least give other music in this genre a chance 😬 Songs that stood out: I actually liked almost all songs, but especially Baba O'riley and Bargain Album rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Very nice classic 70s sound banger!

Another one of their albums? Eurgh... I’ve said it in every one of my reviews of The Who so far, I’m just not a fan. Well, fortunately this time we have a good one. Relatively familiar with a few of the songs already and the rest is pretty good too. Glad to get something decent.

Overall: 8/10 This is my favourite album by The Who for the fact that it isn't trying as hard as some of their other albums. It seems they just wanted to rock the hell out for a bit in between the goliaths that are Tommy and Quadrophenia. This is also the only album by The Who that I own on vinyl and that might have a big influence over how I perceive the album. I remember being blown away the first time I listened to it. The keyboard work is so incredible, then you've got Keith and John killing it in the rhythm section. I also think Roger has never sounded better. The middle section of the album isn't mind blowing but it's bookended by four of the band's best songs. I'd also piss on that stupid looking rock. I grew up loving this band and Pete’s guitar work is super unique with the big open chords. That said, I thought the singles and greatest hits were the highlight of this album.

Baba o Riley carries

Obviously Baba O'Riley is the greatest song of all time. The rest of the album was enjoyable but unremarkable for me

In my view Who’s Next is the most consistently strong track wise of The Who’s albums. Tommy is still my overall favourite album of theirs with this following close. Behind Blue Eyes is my favourite track.

The Who are definitely one of the best bands to come out of the psych/prog rock scene in the late 60s and early 70s. And this is definitely one of their best albums, just all around doing everything right and having so many great and consistent moments.

It's about time! This merits 4.5-5 stars for sure. This album was all over the radio in the 70's and 80's and still gets a ton of airplay. HUGE hits like "Baba O'Riley", "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Bargain", "Behind Blue Eyes" and glue tracks like "The Song Is Over", "Getting In Tune" and "Going Mobile" all got air time. 8 out of 9 tracks ("My Wife", still a good song) get on the radio, that's just flat out impressive. This is a good portion of any Who greatest hits album! No denying it, whether you're a fan of The Who or even classic rock, this album is stacked and has the sales, the airtime, the longevity, the influence and the hits you expect from a Top 1001 album. After listening this is a solid 5 because of everything I mentioned above.

Love Ain’t for Keeping is my favourite track. Very 70s album, some blues elements, psychedelic elements. Easy to listen to.

Amazing album, but something’s missing… and I can’t explain.

One of the best album starts I've ever heard. It also finishes really strong, but the middle section lags behind somewhat in the in comparison. Nevertheless, those are some iconic sounds and singles, and although it's not quite my cup of tea, I have to respect that this album dates back to 1971 and still holds up to this day.

I agree with what's been said elsewhere on reviews - some stand out tracks to start and finish with some fairly middle of the road offerings between.

Definitely some iconic bangers. Not ever gonna be a band that I gravitate towards but it’s a solid album.

Good stuff. I prefer the keyboard stuff since the melodies are better with it.

Absolutely cracking opener and closer, and although nothing in between is quite as good, they're still good enough to be decent listening and the standout tracks earn it a four. Also, the drumming here is top notch.

I never really got into the mainstream rock stuff. I guess I just found it kinda boring compared to the post/prog metal stuff I prefer. That, or I was just too lazy to try it. Probably both. Anyways, Who's Next changed my mind on rock. Two tracks in, I wasn't too impressed. It was probably on track for a 6.8/10 or something. But then I got into it a little more. Still not the greatest thing I'd ever heard, but I was grooving. Then Behind Blue Eyes came on, and oh my god, that was all I needed to truly fall in love. Whenever I listen to an album, it often takes a really really good song to truly hook me on it and convince me to love the rest of the album, and Behind Blue Eyes was what did that for me. I haven't relistened to the album yet, but I can tell I'm gonna have a good time doing so.

Several really good songs and several songs I could do without. The good ones outshine the rest and put this up there for me. 4/5

I’m not even the biggest Who fan, but this album rules. Everything seemingly holds up after 54 years. I love that they hit you with a punch right out of the gates with Baba O’Reilly. It feels like one of the best opening tracks anyone could have ever selected for an album. There’s a few more decent rock numbers, highlighting each member’s talents as well. Going to the ballad of Behind Blue Eyes then immediately kicking your ass again with Won’t Get Fooled Again to close it all out feels like you’re getting a perfect live music experience and they’re sending you home on a high note wanting more. Anyways, fantastic record. 9 songs filled with emotional highs and lows and nothing that feels like it’s going on too long. God, Keith Moon was so good.

An album that absolutely should be a mess considering the backstory but wound up being pretty great. It was near impossible for The Who to follow Tommy, though Townsend had an even bigger concept album planned in Life House. They recorded a ton of the songs live, kept pushing, Pete had a nervous breakdown, the band tried to pick up and recover, and somehow put something together from the ashes. “Baba O’Riley” is still maybe the greatest opener in rock history, an instant anthem for the teenage wasteland. Other standout hits include “Behind Blue Eyes” (accept no substitutes) and “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” but “Getting in Tune”, “My Wife” and “The Bargain” are classics too. Still, they left off some of the greatest songs like “Water”, “Pure and Easy”, and “The Seeker” to emerge as one off singles or rarities later. Daltrey is in peak vocal form here, with some of his best singing. Entwistle is as grooving and brilliant on base as ever, and Keith Moon is able to take his madcap energy to different anthemic moments just as well as the rockers he’s been playing to this point. If there’s any weak link, it’s Townsend, who sounds every bit as strung out as he was in real life. Only in the highest moments of “Baba O’Riley” and in the powerful thrumming of “Won’t Get Fooled Again” do we really hear his signature sound. They’d peak one last time after this with the mod opera Quadrophenia, but this was a band in crisis, and out of it made a hell of an album. It’s just not their best.

The Who is one of those bands I've heard about and know the name of because it seems like everyone has heard of them. And I've for sure heard at least the riff from 'Baba O'Riley' and the scream from 'Won't Get Fooled Again'. I've heard 'Behind Blue Eyes' before, but I think I might only have heard the Limp Bizkit cover. Decent album, has some great songs.

Not looking at the track list going into this one, I was fully prepared for there to be at least a few throwaway songs. It was the 70s, the Who had just done Tommy and would soon do Quadrophenia, which are both maximalist to absurd degree, you gotta figure some of that is gonna bleed through here. Nope! Three bangers, a great ballad, the first/only good John Entwistle song, a couple of solid album tracks, and the soundtrack to the most memorable Nissan commercial of our youths.

Really good album, which must have one of the best classic rock opening tracks. Baba O'Riley really kicks the album into action with those first powerful guitar chords. Also has the classic Behind blue eyes and ending with Won't get fooled again. A few fillers, but definitely worth checking out. 4/5

A couple of stone cold classics, monolithic in scale, scope and impact. And then a couple that felt pissed up the wall! Hayooo – I joke. (Best album cover of all time? It’s always resonated with me, even before knowing what’s on this record.) I enjoyed this album as much in a kind of “thank you” sort of way as I did actually and viscerally the music. Certainly, there’s plenty on this record to back Eddie Vedder’s “they left us no new places to explore” sentiments … even if that sentiment only strictly applies to acts with the imagination of Pearl Jam. Thanks for the power chords, the Marshall stacks, and the tunes, Pete. And thanks for the attack, everyone else. But more than anything, thanks for not playing “Fiddle about” again. (Fave song besides the obvious: “My wife”.)

I’ll tell you who’s next: me, to play this album over and over again. Out of my way, I say! Classics are classics because you can listen to them anytime and they don’t get old. So I’m an Xer with Boomer taste maybe, I don’t know; this record smacks.

Different sound than "My Generation", but very good end to end.

Oh man classic album! It's good like a classic of the 70s, Baba O'Reilly, won't get fooled again, behind blue eyes?! Classic and the funny thing is this isn't even one of my favorite bands from this time period, but they do have some great songs in their catalog!

Sort of like a fleeting dream that has no meaning once you wake up and clear your head.

A more melodic, soft, and introspective album from them with the obvious hits I knew, but it was nice to hear it all front to back to see how cohesive it is as a whole.

I know this group. Legendary rock group. I know this album, never heard it all the way through. I know these first two tracks. Yeah this is a good album.

The Who - Who's Next It just keeps getting better. Some really iconic moments from pop culture come from this album. The first and last songs on the album are just perfect in any way. It's really consistent with the quality that it offers, although there are some loose ones that just don't hit. An all time classic. Truly some of the best songs of the generation. Unfortunately, a few others don't live up to that level, but still a fantastic and musically deep work.

p227. 1971. 4 stars. Class 60s act show how to transition to the 70s in style. This is the yardstick against which all 70s rock albums need to be measured. It's not perfect - it gets flabby in the middle - but when it's good (and most of it is) it's brilliant.

We've had quite a few of their albums, and I think this one is probably the best of the bunch to date. Baba O'Riley is an iconic opener, and Behind Blue Eyes / Won't Get Fooled Again is a great combination to close the album. What's in between is a bit mixed, ranging between okay and pretty good, and enough to get this album into the 4 range.

Slows in the middle, but what a bang at beginning & end

No doubt - this album contains some all time classic rock songs - I’m looking at you Baba O’ Reilly, Who Ate You, and Behind Blue Eyes. These songs transcend time and somehow never sound dated. The problem with having those songs on an album is that the other songs are measured by the same ruler. That being said a few of the other songs brought this album down for me. My Wife was an odd song that actually used horns…..weird. Love Ain’t For Keeping sounded very dated. Bargain and Going Mobile were familiar and I enjoyed them. This Song is Over was new to me and decent. All being said……a great but uneven album.

- Who doesn't like the Who? - I mean, it's not my favourite thing of all time, but I know a good record when I hear it, and this one has all these influences that can't be overstated - From that timeless classic Baba O'Reilly, and practically closing on Behind Blue Eyes, this album has been cemented in culture as a true classic

Great album. Loads or good tracks. Love the Synth organs sounds.

This is an album I’ve grown to appreciate more, especially now that I’m diving into so much music. It was definitely innovative for its time, particularly in how it used synthesizers—far ahead of what mainstream rock was doing back then. The production is also incredible, standing out compared to many other albums from the same period. The Who is easily one of the most influential bands in shaping the early evolution of hard rock.

Probably the best who album out there, but never could get into the who in general. Songs getting in tune are so lazy lyrically, a song about tuning your guitar. Amazing... In any case still some great songs here 4*

Between Baba O'Riley and Behind Blue Eyes there's a bunch of just kinda okayish fun typical 70s dad rock cuts. But uh yeah the beginning and ending of this album are some of the greatest in rock's history so, like, yea pretty decent I'd say

Brilliant

Baba o Riley is something that technically is very impressive especially for this time but as bad as this may sound I’ve never really loved this one as much.with this album I’d much rather listen to this song is over or getting in tune. I get how baba o Riley is technically better but there’s just something about it that isn’t for me. Behind blue eyes is a favourite of mine though and won’t get fooled again is great 4/5

I like the who, and there's some bangers on here, but some definite non bangers too.

I enjoyed this one

Who's Next is the album where The Who fully proved their worth to me. It does seem to be another concept album from them but this one actually seems to have a lot more structure to it. The songs here don't have any iffy sounding moments like some the ones from Tommy did but here they do have their own sound here and don't seem to be ripping anything off unlike My Generation which was a clear Beatles rip off. This album did feel like a bit of a drag but it never got too much. There were quite a couple of great songs on this album so that easily makes up for it anyway. This is actually a pretty great album and the best Who album i have done so far. Best Song: Bargain Worst Song: Love Ain't For Keeping

Definitely the best of The Who albums we’ve had so far. Still not crazy about them but this album is really solid from beginning to end, has some hits, and kinda helps me understand the hype.

The Who albums have a lot of peaks and valley's. Every album has one or two of their best hits and the rest of it can usually be forgotten. This album is very similar, but the three songs "Baba O' Reily", "Behind Blue Eyes", and "Won't Get Fooled Again" are some of The Who's Highest Peaks. The other songs don't matter at all, but those three alone are enough for a 4. When people think of The Who, they're thinking about this album.

This is a band that's always been around, but I've never really dug into. The drums are excellent. Just baba O'Reilly, bargain and behind blue eyes would immediately make this a great album.

Great album with some extremely popular tracks that despite being overplayed both in movies and certain clubs, still are bangers that you can listen to over and over again. Solid 4/5.

What a fantastic band the Who were. Moon is just fantastic on this. Similar for Townshend's guitar. Daltrey on top form and weaving his magic, The Ox.

The Who are a band I’ve always liked but not loved but seeing them live first at T In The Park then Live Aid I fully appreciate how brilliant they are and this album is as good a showcase for them with Baba O’Riley and Won’t Get Fooled Again 5/5 on their own

Very enjoyable listen. There are a lot of classic songs on this album that I didn’t realise were The Who! Will probably play this again at some point.

Hm..I tried a few times to get into that classic rock stuff. While the stones actually grew on me with "aftermath", I still have some trouble with this one even though I know this record for some time now. Want to give it 3.5, but because of the legendary status and a great memory connected with the who I'll give it 4.

A solid 4 some songs outstay the welcome a bit - but Baba O Reilly! Nuff said

Overall as an album it's not brilliant as there are a few fillers, but there are also some great songs on there. Baba O'Riley is a brilliant opener (and amazing live), Bargain is pretty good but for me the quality drops significantly until we get to Behind Blue Eyes and then the epic Won't Get Fooled Again which is one of the greatest songs of all time.

As the most liked review on this site has already said, this album starts and ends incredibly strong. In between those powerful bookends, Who's Next blends raw energy with more refined experimentation, showing The Who at a transitional point in their sound. Tracks like "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" are iconic for a reason, driven by anthemic choruses and innovative use of synthesizers. While a couple of the mid-album songs may not shine as brightly, they still carry the weight of a band pushing boundaries. It's a record that remains a benchmark for rock music, balancing classic rock riffs with a forward-looking ambition. 4/5

I was wondering when we'd get a Who album in this collection, and now I know. And quite a classic album, although given that there are 5 more awaiting us, I'm not sure whether this is the pinnacle of their discography, or just a waypoint. I've certainly heard most of the songs on this album many many times, and enjoyed them all to varying degrees ("Baba O'Riley" and "Won't get fooled again" perhaps the most, as well as "Behind blue eyes" despite its relentless narcissism, and probably "Bargain" the least of the lot). Of the ones I hadn't heard before, I enjoyed "Love ain't for keeping". It's remarkable, though, how few of the songs were new to me. I don't know much of The Who's history, so it was helpful to me--and also bizarre--to read about how most of the songs on this album came from an abandoned "Lifehouse" interactive futuristic rock-opera concept that Townshend dreamt up involving government-controlled "experience suits" and having audience members help direct the music of the opera as it unfolded. Perhaps not surprisingly, the fans who attended a couple of test runs "simply wanted the Who to play 'My Generation' and smash a guitar", and things unraveled from there. I'm kind of glad there are only remnants of this concept in the album, mainly the use of synthesizers, as it sounded like a really painful experience for everyone involved.

A classic

Lots of hits and recognizable songs packed into a tight album length. In terms of classics, it's hard for me to argue against this one.

This was really really good. I loved the instrumental part arranging in this album a lot. They really know how to write a catchy song.

I don't remember if I said this in another review or not, but I used to like the who a decent bit, but then one day I woke up and thought they were a little too cheesy/cringe and I couldn't bring myself to really listen to them. That being said this album has most of the songs I can still listen to and enjoy. The singles on this album are great (except the end of baba o'riley, it kind of dies like a wet fart). Everything in the middle of this album is a little lame and doesn't do much for me. If these songs were tighter I could have given this a 5. The lyrics for getting in tune are something I would make up when writing a song and then later change, but they never changed them. Kinda wish I never learned they peed on the obelisk. High 4.

What a tremendous album. Incredible.

First two and last two songs are absolute fives. The middle sounds like filler in comparison but still all solid songs. Keith Moons drumming is so fucking awesome.

Really good classic rock that happens to include Behind Blue Eyes which I didn't hate as much as I remember. I'll still skip it on the radio, but my real hatred for it is due to Limp Bizkit. That's a dilemma. Do you devalue an album because a later band makes a shit cover of one of your songs? That seems unfair. But when that particular turd sandwich propagates Limp Bizkit and lends them legitimacy to some people? That's gotta be closer to two stars. Good thing the rest of the album is great. And it isn't their fault the albums weak link opened the Durst door further. I tell you what, I'd listen to Keith Moon interpretive drum names in the phone book. This album should be listened to and enjoyed. Just stay away from Limp Bizkit.

Strong classic songs

These guys are pretty good and probably have a bright future in music. Just kidding, obviously I've heard this before and it's still really good. Definitely ahead of their time. Great guitar work and vocals.

I found the “meta” lyrics a bit lazy, it sounds like something you would pull out of your arse when you’re just trying to accompany some new guitar part, it’s not the only example of it either. Nonetheless the songs are good so I can’t get too stuck up on it

I’ve never been a big Who fan, but there’s been songs of there’s that I’ve really enjoyed. I really liked this album, though. The hits are great and the rest of it was decent too. I’m not sure it’s a 5 star, but it’s a solid four star.

Found this Album at my local thrift store for 1.25. It totally rips and is a 4.5, almost a 5 but going to 4.

Second The Who album in 3 days, and what a whopper! Though I barely could sit through "Tommy", I had a blast listening to this gem! So close to being a 5*

When I was about 14 or 15 I would go up to my room almost every night and listen to the Pirates post-game radio show. The Pirates were awful, but the show talked a lot about the minor leaguers that were on their way, and there was hope. That hope amounted to basically nothing as a Pirates fan, but the show always opened with "Baba O'Riley", so at least I got a great song out of it. A few more things before I really dive in here. First, I legitimately think "Baba O'Riley" is one of the best rock songs of all time. It's absolutely top-tier, it builds in a perfect way, the guitar riff is so good, just an incredible song. Second, I'm pretty sure that I overrated the last The Who album I got on here (The Who Sells Out). It wasn't bad, but probably didn't quite deserve the 4 I gave it. This album is definitely better than that one, and is also better than My Generation (which I gave a 3, probably deserves like a 3.5). All of that said, here's my review. This is unequivocally the best The Who album of the 3 that I've gotten on here. Without a doubt. That said, and I hate to admit this, but I was honestly a little disappointed overall. "Baba O'Riley" is such a good opener, but then the rest of the first half is somewhat generic '70s rock. They've definitely evolved their sound at this point and a lot of the tracks are fine but a bit underwhelming. It has a few nice moments on the back half. "Getting in Tune" is understated but enjoyable, "Behind Blue Eyes" is pretty iconic too, and "Won't Get Fooled Again" is a strong finish. I'm sounding a bit negative for an album that's definitely very good, but I think I expected a sure-thing 5-star rating with "Baba O'Riley", but I don't think I can get all the way there. Definitely very enjoyable overall, very possibly the closest album to 5-stars that I'm not giving 5 stars, but it is what it is. We move on. Legendary rock

For real though, they peed on the monolith.

Like most albums by The Who, they've got three big hits and a bunch of middling songs. But boy were those hits fantastic! "Baba O'Riley" is the template for new wave before punk had even happened yet. Further, this song has had a massive cultural impact that is hard to overstate. "Behind Blue Eyes" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" are great anthems. The first communicated in quiet suppressed rage and depression of a failed personal relationship, that could easily be misheard as a ballad, and the second a cynical stadium anthem song about the futility of revolution. Outside of its time and place it is probably an album with a rating of 3, but taken in context for its time and place and the impact it had on much of the music that come over the next 50 years, it is easily a 4.

It's the Who. A bunch of classic epics on this one. My father had this record, but I don't remember listening to it that much when I was a kid. I do remember being strangely unsettled by the cover image. On the whole, it is quite inventive with its use of synths and the mix between primitive rock'n'roll and bits of traditional / folky tunes scattered here and there. The songs seem to be stretching themselves self between several ambitions: attaining the visceral quality of the best rock music, telling a good story and showing musical sophistication. The album does not always deliver on all fronts, it sometimes turns out a bit pompous (Bargain), but you can never fault their sincerity.

I'm not a huge fan of The Who, but this is an iconic album that is hard to beat. Baba O'Riley will always be the start of the night at Woodfield's from my college days.

Lots of bangers on this record. Keith Moon’s drumming so iconic and the vocal work is spectacular. This record has made me a Who fan for sure, even if not every song is the best.

After the sprawling rock opera double album Tommy, Pete Townshend came up with an even more ambitious project - Lifehouse, a dystopian sci fi concept album with a movie and an interactive live show. For various reasons, the project foundered but The Who rescued some of the songs for this album. The highlights are the first and last tracks - Baba O’Reilly and Won’t Get Fooled Again, both featuring epic modular synth riffs that elevate them to classic status.

An all time classic album.

Ah right, the Baba O'Riley album. Everyone's heard that frantic opening synth loop, it's shown up everywhere from Miami Vice to Family Guy. The "best I ever had" chorus from Bargain was also mildly familiar. Can't say I knew the rest, though, until the phased keys kicked in on the last track. At least it was more accessible than Tommy (which this site gave me only 8 albums ago) in that I didn't have to try to keep track of some kind of overarching narrative while I work. "Getting in Tune" is amusingly meta, & probably influenced many later lines like "Why do I find it hard to write the next line?" from Spandeau Ballet's "True". Anyway, decent album (he says, no doubt angering many boomer Who fans). XD

Easy to listen to. Classic album.

Lots of stuff to like here, including the synthesizer arc from "Baba O'Riley" to "Won't Get Fooled Again." And Keith Moon was unbelievable. A little bit of a letdown mid-album blocked the fifth star.

I'm not a massive fan of The Who, and this is the only Who LP in my collection. It think it's a good album, but the strongest tracks bookend some weaker ones. I'm struck by Daltrey's vocals - absolutely powerful. Also the drumming comes through well on some of the tracks. I don't think I can give this a 5 - maybe 4. I particularly liked Baba O'Reilly and Won't Get Fooled Again.

I'm really up and down on The Who, based on the albums that I've gotten on this list. I really enjoyed this album overall, though, much more so than the previous albums that I've gotten here. Baba O'Riley is a kickass early synth song, and it keeps going from there. It's not one that you have to listen to super actively, but it's fun music with a lot of diversity of sound 4/5

The only Who record I consistently go back to. Baba O’Reilly is one of the great rock and roll songs and Daltrey’s scream at the end of We Don’t Get Fooled Again is iconic. All that said the middle portion of this drags - it’s really the top and bottom of this that makes it a good album.

There are some classic songs here, but the entire middle of the album is a bit random. It's funny how the smartness of the lyrics suddenly drops when they are writing about women.

Baba O'Riley is such an epic track it put me in a good frame of mind. Behind Blue Eyes is certianly intriguing and Going Mobile made me chuckle. A good fun raucous album.

Bit over the top

Can't deny it's a good album but this album is a bit too dad rock for me. I prefer the earlier The Who vibes.

As others have pointed out - it begins with electricity and excitement, takes a brief snooze and then finishes with absolute passion. The grit of the guitar is present throughout and the singing never fully diminishes. The direction of the album is uniform throughout. Truly stellar songs. Great album.

every time i listen to baba oriley i am reminded of the joe pera talks with you scene where he hears it for the first time and can’t stop listening to it and dances like. a grandpa toddler and that will never not make me happy and filled with childlike wonder and joy. the rest is ok.

Classic

The best studio album from The Who

It starts and finished with absolute bangers. While I positively rate every song in between the rest of the album doesn't blow me away like it once did. That isn't to say that it isn't still a great album, but at one point I may have held this in my top 10. On this most recent listen it didn't hold up as well as I had romanticized in my memory. Every song is at least good, some of which are great, and it is book ended by two stone cold classics. However, the late-middle of the album drops off a little bit. It's still a very solid album deserving of praise. It belongs near the top of every list. Throw it on pretty much whenever and it will always be an enjoyable listen. 4.2 stars

This is an amazing album with truly classic songs. Weird but I never owned this, or any other Who album. I never knew anyone else that was into them, so I had no one to guide me into understanding them. Otherwise, I also kinda feel like these songs have been prostituted thru turning them into advertising melodies. Sad. Easily 4 star quality tho.

Good initial tracks

Can't say this is what I expected from my first 'The Who' album considering the "Hard Rock" label often attached to them. I mean the closest thing to the typical hard-rock song here is the closing track 'Won't Get Fooled Again'. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, in fact, I think it benefits from its variety in sound through the liberal use of synthesizers and keyboards. There's also the occasional acoustic-driven track which further adds to this album's eclecticism. By using the piano and synth layering to fill the sound, the album ends up feeling very theatrical, especially when Pete Townshend is leading the vocals. This is most certainly true on a song like 'The Song is Over', which plays out like a tragic love tale. I love the way the more theatrical and ambitious synthetic elements blend with the more typical hard-rock sounds on many of these tracks, it feels like you're listening to two very different albums intertwined with one another. I especially love the melodic bass all over this album. Individually, the songs are great, with many following the common themes of love, trust, and affection tackled in serious or in more humorous ways like on 'My Wife'. I'd say the two closers are the strongest here with the penultimate song detailing the loneliness of an individual who's void of emotions with a solid and triumphant instrumental switch-up near the second half. The closing track sounds unlike any other song here and details the futile efforts of facilitating change because of vile leadership patterns; wittingly titling the track 'Won't Get Fooled Again'. While I wasn't expecting all of this and it took quite a bit to fully understand this album's sound and what exactly it was going for (I still think it leans towards a more pop-rock sound rather than hard-rock), I think its ideas, playing, and overall perspective on the genre made for a very unique listen.

I really didn’t want to rank another Who album so high but almost every song was a banger. All four of them are so talented that this album just moves sonically.

Absolutely loved this! The new remaster of this album that just came out (done by Steven Wilson!) sounds great. Such a breath of fresh air hearing a succinct rock record in 43 minutes after having to slog through a 2 hour Smashing Pumpkins album. Loved it!

Fantastic album, one of the all time greats. The Who at their best. Still, not sure i can give it a 5, it’s just, i don’t know, it’s musically a 5, but i’m only 2 albums into this journey and for me personally, there’s other music out there that i find more appealing.
