What the fuck is this shit? I could almost enjoy it for the drumming, which seems like the only thing that saves this from a 1 rating. The riffs all sound like first drafts of ideas that went nowhere. The lyrics are less than that. What unlistenable junk.

This needed a bit of time to settle in but holy moly it's worth preserving. Big Presidents of the US, Beck, kinda chaotic QOTSA, Dave Graney energy.

45 Minutes of absoloute chaos, I absolutely loved it. I have crossed paths with TJSBE (as I assume fans call them) many times over the years (notably of course from Baby Driver) but never sat down to listen to them, despite knowing it would be my kind of thing. But that's what projects like this are all about right, to help you get round to all these artists and I'm so glad I did with this one. There's a lot of good riffery and songcraft in here, its just hidden behind the noise on purpose and strung together in a way which is a hell of a brave move to make and one I respect immensely. The songs are short and never outstay their welcome and the amount of influences on show are staggering. This is great stuff. 4/5

Toen ik zag dat weird al hier iets mee te maken had kreeg ik al een naar voorgevoel, maar ik zette hem gewoon aan. Bij het tweede nummer dacht ik dat ik in Tony hawks pro skater zat. Toen werd het alleen maar meer punk blues, en het duurde te lang. Dit album is 20 jaar te laat uitgekomen anders had het meer dan vervelend kunnen zijn

Noisy and chaotic

What a bizarre album. I really liked some of the songs, but some were a complete flop for me. Lots of screaming and very disjointed instruments all over. Quite a long one too with 32 songs. Saved tracks: Wail, Fuck Shit Up, Hot Shit, R.L. Got Soul, Sticky

Fucking great album!

I have no reason in the world to like this as much as I did. Never heard of them, no one here seems to like them much, it's not even influential, and even critics weren't too crazy about it. But I had a blast rocking out to this weird punk blues piece. Embodies a lot of Iggy Pop spirit and imitating Elvis feeling like a rock n roll parody. A bit like The Fall except less controlled and focused. Raw and wild with wacky and creative instrumentation. Only reason I'm not rating it higher is cause the White Stripes showed the world you could make this style leagues better. Favorites: Skunk, Wail, Fuck Shit Up, 2Kindsa Love, Chicken Dog, Rocketship, Can't Stop

For the first album of this project, it was a lot better than I expected. This is definitely a sound that I would listen to. I enjoyed their song in Baby Driver ("Bellbottoms") and I didn't expect them to go so hard in this album. Will definitely be checking out some of their other songs. As for this album, I enjoyed many of the songs. The songs are quite cathartic, I enjoy a singer who has a powerful voice. The songs are very "grungy". They sound quite unpolished and noisy, but in a very good way. I also very enjoyed the Radio ad's included in the album. I am a sucker for "spoken songs" or just straight up "voice clips". I ended up saving "Judah Love Theme", "Sticky", "Love All Of Me", and "Skunk". But I imagine I will add more as I listen to this album again.

Less blues, more explosion

This album is a strange fusion of blues, punk, and a bit of 50s rock. It is distinctly anti-establishment and is deliberately messy giving it a diy garage sound. The vocal delivery oscillates between a more straightforward punk delivery and almost a parody of Elvis like delivery. Overall, it is a strange and effective album.

If only all blues could be like this. Danceable....boogi and a Woogie. Sort of a bluesy Cramps. There are songs here that I LOVE. Rocketship....WOW, but also 2Kindsa Love, Chicken Dog, Dynamite Lover (hmmmm almost straigt ahead blues), Hot Shit, turns up the garage quotient a la Cramps. The album starts off kinda weird and annoying with Skunk but quickly turns to weird and uniquely interesting; Identity is a punk/blues (if that's a thing) rave-up at it's finest. Wait turns on the heavy blues AND I LIKE IT! Then comes Fuck Shit Up. kind of a mash-up of non sequiters and weird looping guitars and burbling bass, weird but cool. Then the pace quickens on 2kindsa Love, to that blues/punk thing that just works for me. So I won't go through each song but suffice to say I find something to like in most every song. Previously, JSBX was only Acme for me...and I like that album but Now I Got Worry is just way more everything....more mess, more blues, more noise, more chaos, more musical goodness. 4.5 stars

Interesting blend of punk and bluesy rock and roll. Not sure if I'll be revisiting this one any time soon tbh, but it was interesting.

I would have been surprised had I gone to this show without knowing who they were beforehand. Very much not blues.

This was a challenging listen. The first 20 seconds certainly throws you off. Wail is a great track and I definitely got into the slightly off, crass, raw, punk energy of the album. Certainly nothing i expected, but definitely giving it props.

Aggressively, unapologetically wild and incoherent. Good musicianship being bastardized so intentionally and for what? There are some good ideas and elements here, but they're all competing with each other so hard that the listening experience is painful and uncomfortable. All of the good drowned out, smothered, spit on, and stomped by piss poor execution.

My thoughts throughout the experience: The first two songs were utter dogshit. Wail came on and while it was an alright listen, it didn't salvage what's been played so far. While Fuck Shit Up is a cover, I wasn't expecting to want to do the exact opposite, so boring. 2Kindsa Love and Love All Of Me were pretty mediocre but had some good elements. From Chicken Dog, things started to get decent. That point on to R.L Got Soul, there were numerous good grooves and licks that saved Now I Got Worry from being thrown in a dumpster fire. It's just a shame it ends on a sour note with Get Over Here and Sticky being underwhelming songs for an album that was starting to get good. 8 songs were quite alright and would probably enjoy more if I jammed out to them, the other 8 I'm happy never listening to again. Bit of a waste really.

11th October 2022 Listened on the drive home from London. Chilled evening with bake off. Rough, raw and jagged, Jon Spencer punks up the blues. Loved it.

Kinda think they would be great live but I find it totally unlovable in my front room. Thrash punk blues with flailing guitar and yelping vocals. Does nothing for me. 2 for its gusto.

I'm getting Math Rock meets Pixies vibes from this. Kinda too all over the place for my liking, didn't really feel cohesive. There were parts of it I really enjoyed but for the most part I was underwhelmed. Standouts: Wail

I instantly thought this album was bad and nothing changed during my listen.

Jeez this just went on and on. If they wanted to start the album off on a bad note and get listeners into a bad mood from the off, they sure achieved it.

A very impressive garage band, but surprising they got a record deal and I’m even more surprised this album is on the list. Fun to listen to if you’re looking for some blues-rock to play in the background, but thousands of albums would need to disappear before it would come close to greatest albums territory. 2/5

Great guitar, had a few tracks that fell short for me. Enjoyed the unique tone throughout

The band smacks you over the head in the first minute with what one would could call a tuning or Spencer not quite getting there. That choice, however, like so many others which read as bombastic when introduced, is in facto considered enough to be consistent. That consideration might bear other fruit, or I might be blinded by the right kind of stupid that rockabilly entails. But the other voices aren't stupid, and neither is the way the Explosion gradually expands its palette, coming to a stop in Xiu Xiu territory. Not for everyone, but I'm a particularly grateful listener.

I was not expecting to like this, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's blues rock (which I typically find boring) with a punk rock edge, which really helped me with this. There's a much better sound with that added gritty aggression.

Oh cool, an episode in which I continue to not understand why this band is famous. The guitar work is good. Everything else is just noise, I have never got this band and apparently never will.

Well, the first track of this is deeply unpleasant. Nothing subsequent has yet to persuade me anything different.

Weird and very weird at times but was kind of interesting.

Not a clue here… The album opens with skunk it’s a really nasty sounding tune that’s just slightly too warped sounding for me. Identify is actually a decent bit of rapid paced punk but it’s not good that one of the best songs is a minute long filler track. Wail is meh it’s not my style but I see appeal with this one. Fuck shit up is a wired little thing that is kinda like a 3 minute long version of an interlude on a rap album. 2kindsa love isn’t a great song in my ears and I am confused by any appeal this song may have. Love all of me is a shortie but a ghastly shortie that I will avoid like the plague. Chicken dog does have good guitar work I’ll give it that but his voice ruins a perfectly good song. Rocketship is a good song for the album but that doesn’t mean too much. The three song rush of dynamite lover, hot shot and can’t stop are all interesting enough songs if they were better made and had a different vocalist. The guitar tones in firefly lover are disgustingly dreadful I can’t really focus on the rest of the song. Eyeballing is slow and boring nothing else here until the end actually that bit is cool but doesn’t fit with the main song. R.L. Ain’t got soul is the only message I got from R.L. got soul an annoying instrumental. Get over here is a short punky mess actually it’s alright. The album ends with sticky one of the creepiest messes I’ve ever herd I guess I have to commend them for that. The bad songs far outweigh the good songs so much so that i’am giving it a 1/5. Dreadful!

A lotta buzz about this band in the 90's. Overall I thought they were very good, but seem to fall just short of amazing. Well not my fav album by them this does highlight all the different directions they go in.

Punk edged noise rock with blues backbone. You gotta be in the mood for this, but if you are, it’s pretty killer.

I've been listening to this since high school. I love the energy and chaos of this record. I'm not sure if this is the best JSBX record but it's the one I listen to the most. Also the video for Wail is still a good time.

It started off fairly strong, as noise albums go. I like the guitar, and while it's mostly noise from the singer, I kinda liked it at first. But then it just kept going. And going. And going. Cut the runtime in half and you have something here, otherwise it just seems a little self-indulgent. There's no way that there isn't something that could've been lost in a 80 minute album.

Volume? Check. Attitude? Check. Riffs? Sort of... Songs? Nope.

Became familiar with these guys reading the book Meet Me in The Bathroom. You can feel some of the roots that influenced some of the early 2000s rock revival. This just isn't as good as a lot of those albums...

I've never really explored JSBE. Every once in a while I hear one of their songs and think "damn, why didn't I ever listen to these guys." This whole album was like that.

I wanted to like this album, but then I hit play.

Noisy, didn't enjoy much of this.

Only really knew this guy from Bellbottoms. This was pretty fun

Messy, impenetrable lyrics, odd choices of cover versions, and yet, there's something there. Not the best, but one my younger self would probably have liked a lot.

One hell of a fun album. Greasy, messy rock and roll. I have their album Acme, but this sounds quite different. Compares at times to The Cramps. Garage rock at its best. 4 🌟

A bit annoying to be honest!

Only bluesy on a couple of tracks, otherwise quite punky and screechily sung. Not especially enjoyable, thankfully short songs, but certainly not the worst on this list.

Wow I hate it. The first 20 seconds grated badly and I hoped things would get better, but no. 😬 I kinda liked the music in Can’t Stop, but that’s it.

Much grittier than I was expecting. Liked the energy and the chaos of it, but stopped it before all the bonus tracks were done. At some point, I was done.

Who puts this on by choice?!?!? Can't Stop is ok, if you can make it that far. But I want my 45 minutes back, so you get the dreaded 1. Kinda makes me want to find some actually good southern swagger. Better Than Ezra's Paper Empire coming up next.

Noise rock and noise punk I'm familiar with, but noise blues... that's a new one. It was always an interesting record, if not always "good", necessarily. But man, when it slapped, it SLAPPED.

An explosion is great title for something that was spectacular at the beginning, and got smoky and draining towards the end.

There's a fine line between an album carrying in its energy from start to finish, and becoming a bit one-note. If it wasn't for songs like Can't Stop, with a different pace tot them this would be the latter for me. Psych-scuzzy nonsense, this should be right up my alley, but it didn't grip me, maybe it needed a couple of out and out bangers, maybe I'll like it better if I hear it on my normal set of headphones. Plenty of fun though.

Now I Got Worry is a weird old album, some of it is interesting, some of it is very bad, not enough of it is good enough to get more than a 2/5.

This is... strange... A particularly weird start, and roughly alternates between mostly short, punky songs that are kind of cool and weird instrumental breakdowns that are just strange. 2/5, would've been higher if they'd have skipped a load of the particularly peculiar stuff. Won't listen again.

The second track was a short, hardcore-ish banger. There's some good moments on occasion but it's mostly annoying. I was never impressed by the little I had heard from them before and this certainly didn't change my mind. If I wanted to hear a punk/blues hybrid I'd go with Bob Log III. Now thats an artist who should've made this list. The people demand respect for Bob Log III!

I almost made the mistake to rate this album a 1 by just listening the screaming of the first song but, i always like to give another chance before the rating and was not disappointed. This is surely not a gold record in the sense of lyricism by any means but, it's still a fun experimental rocking live sounded type of record. Never heard of this band before in my life but i'll definitely give this more listens in the near future.

03/24/2022 Absolute chaos, and not in a good way! One of the worst things I've ever listened to, lol. Super aggressive and as unpolished as possible... I hate this so much. Never again, and wish I could erase evidence that I even streamed it in the first place.

Feels like the soundtrack to a movie where the protagonist sort of has a handle on things but soon falls in love and rethinks his dangerous lifestyle.

Raw garage-rock, sounded a lot like The Stooges and bands of that ilk. Really lively and exciting sounds, plenty of punk attitude and cool guitar and I like his singing style. I would love to mosh to tracks like 'Wail' in a club. Some of the experimental tracks are interesting but unnecessary and make the album a bit too long. On the whole though, some great stuff, I really enjoyed it.

Inudal an interesting never heard of this before. Liked the screaming and the funky blues sounds. One criticism too many songs felt like a lot of unfinished ideas towards the end. But overall enjoyed.

4 stars for having the balls to be The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion: A band that needs to exist. I love the band and the attitude, but I found it hard to get through the whole album in one sitting.

I'd heard of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion because they were on the Baby Driver soundtrack. This album is a bit too long, messy and experi-mental. I'm still laughing at the "Like your drunk neighbors are having open mic night" review. ☝😆

A rowdy racket of an album, with musical ideas by the bucketful. Unfortunately, like some other albums on here, this means that it can feel an unfocussed slog, I'd have rather had 2 albums 40 mins long than one at 80, but a great listen for the music all the same.

Not for me

I've seen them in concert and enjoyed it, sadly this studio version didn't hit so well. A fella hollering full volume in a little packed club is a little different than getting it on your headphones at work where it's basically the equivalent of someone screaming right in your ear. Could be the not great (though far from terrible) streaming plus middle of the road headphones, but the mix on this was gratingly heavy on the high end for me. Nails on blackboards. Even for all that it's pretty unique.

I just couldn’t really get into it. I don’t think it’s all that bad, I just wasn’t too interested in the style of music. 3/10

Raw. Young. Fun. Jack White must have given this thing more than a spin or two in his early days

This might be fun (one time) as a live show but it doesn't translate well on record. His voice sounds like a bad Elvis impersonator doing Billy Idol. It seems like they are trying to cross to many genres at once but don't connect with any of them, it doesn't work. I can hear some Jack White/LZ in there but it would be at their worst (give me Jack White anytime). This one goes nowhere for me. 1.5 out of 5, so should I give it a 1 or a 2?

The traditional American blues-y sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience The Black Keys and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion is so palpable, it's impossible not to mention. And while the grooves that JSBE can really get you stomping your feet...the clean and polished production runs so antithetical to soul of the music, that it almost hurts to listen to. Also, it should be noted that Jon Spencer seems to have put all his skill points into guitar playing and none into his lyrics/delivery. Groups like Flat Duo Jets and even Velvet Underground to a certain extent create a better overall feel by scaling back the production to a minimalist style that fits the music being produced. Fav Tracks: Can't Stop, Rocketship

I found myself wrestling with what separates Jon Spencer Blues Explosion from Gun Club or even early Black Keys in terms of punky, garage-y blues. And I think it's the songwriting and vocals. I just don't feel like Jon Spencer has all that much to say, and he says it in a kind of grating way. It's all attitude and no substance. Nevertheless, I wouldn't turn down an opportunity to see this band melt some faces at a packed tavern in their prime! Rating: 2.5/5 Favourite tracks: Wail, Rocketship

Turned the volume down on the first track. Am thankful that i did. Some ok moments, kind of minutemenesque, but overall too distorted and experimental for me.

I first came across this album in college and remember thinking that I'm not cool enough to listen to it. This time around, I didn't feel like it was cool enough for me. Times do change, I suppose! I had to check out the Weird Al video for Wail......

Well, this album starts with a bang! If it starts with a primal scream, where will it go? This is an album worth a second listen.

Surprisingly good. Some real grimey but catchy tracks

The start and the idea behind this album is somewhat fun. It was considerably experimental. I couldn't finish listening and gave up after about 30 minutes. Perhaps I would've finished listening in a different mood. It's too long for this kind of noise.

Screaming is not music. I almost turned it off right there, but the rest of the album was slightly better. Hell, I even enjoyed some of the songs. I'm petty though - I cannot in good conscience support someone fucking screaming in my ear, so 2 stars it is.

Hmmmm. An attempt to sound like the British blues bands of the 60's but 30 years later. It's not terrible, but it doesn't really improve on the originals.

With 32 tracks I would have said he was gaming the Spotify system but this predates Spotify. Rollercoaster album with some good tunes and a couple of dire ones too. Overall pretty good though

Not sure how I felt about this album. Definitely some good blues riffs, but a lot of clattering and noise. I think I would have rated higher but it was a little too disorganized.

Interessantes Album

Hmm... a lot of this album felt like adolescent swearing and shouting for shock value with ‘experimental’ production that was little more than quickly turn the volume up and down. Then a few gems would show up - great rock tracks - and just as I started to get into it, there’d be some juvenile, repetitive tracks again to take me out of it. Felt indulgent and deliberately alienating.

Just couldn't get into it. I'm not sure how this is a must-listen.

More enjoyable than i would have thought.... almost like if you mixed the Doors with the Black Keys.

I liked this album, pretty raw and unique.

should've expected the scream from the song titles/album art. fuck them though! 32 short ish songs, streaming game on point. 'fuck shit up' is my new anthem. so funny. they were just doing whatever. from then on it's just boring rock songs with a little something different but not even close enough to be interesting. until sticky when it gets a little fun again. this was kind of a chore to listen through but whatever.

A bit meh to be honest

Mon compagnon d'écoute, l'inevitable Robtupperwear m'avait pourtant prévenu: cet album est extremement dangereux. C'est néammoins empli de curiosité que je me dirigeais en cette matinée vers mon compte Spotify, pour lancer l'album du denommé Jon Spencer. D'entrée de jeu, nous avons affaire à un imposteur - l'album ne contenant pas la moindre trace de blues. A la place, un cri strident s'echappe de la bouche de Jon a intervalle irregulier, ce qui rend l'écoute pour le moins désagréable. Pour le reste, un simple album de rock underground sans aucun intérêt, une sorte de Minutemerde en un peu moins pire. Un 2 néammoins, car nous avons déjà vécu bien pire dans cette fabuleuse épopée.

I weirdly liked biking around Chicago to this punk blues. Albums too long but it wouldn't be a blues album if it wasn't.

Reasonable songs length, reasonable album length. Seemed promising...However, the very first noise you hear on this album is screaming. Not cool. Couldn't listen to the whole thing. It made my ears hurt.

Stopped listening after two and a half songs. Distracting noise. Can't work with this playing.

Chicken Dog!

Really enjoyed chunks of this - some brilliant guitar but found it dragged a little - there’s an amazing 10 track album in here - a very very strong ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I can appreciate the "experimental" aspect of the album, but I cannot truly enjoy the result...

I had never heard of these guys. Not bad!

Incredibly unique, for better or for worse. Sometimes it comes across as groovy hi-volume punk rock with an Elvis Presley inflection, and sometimes it comes across as white people making noise for the sake of it. I can see why people would dislike it for the latter, but the former is just too intriguing for me to not enjoy. Album just kinda chugs along though, taking no time to let you digest the previous song as it hurls you into the next, and then the one after that. Herein, it makes for mainly nonsense and I can't help but shake that this sort of music is mainly built for a live crowd to just go buck wild, with little semblance of a setlist, opting for just "vibeS" (except the vibes are loud, crazy, and energy that are all off the charts).

Noped out partway through the 4th song. It just sounded like noise to me. I guess I just don't get it...

Did not enjoy until the latter half of the album, but even then it wasn’t doin it for me. 2 stars because giving something 1 star seems rude

Bones are surprisingly good. Feels like making a nice dinner and then just throwing any condiment on top except the ones that make sense just for fun.

Bit wacky

Whew! Swampy, repetitive, hard to listen to at times but relentless and uncompromising. “Dirty Shirt Rock n’ Roll” They reminded me a bit of Cramps, but then I listened to the Cramps and decided, no, they’re in a class of their own. You have to like the dogs barking at the end of Chicken Dog. It's amazing what you can like if jou forced to listen to.it.

Didn't enjoy it enough to get more than part of the way through.

Pretty aggressive sound, Wiki says that if you feel Iike getting slapped upside the head while dancing all night this is the album for you. I feel like I just got slapped upside the head.

Just way too much

A disaster. While I enjoyed some of the guitar licks, they are wasted on these poorly written songs. The whole thing just comes off immature. As if the band was simply trying too hard to be weird and different to grab attention from the public. It is a disgrace to put albums like this next to the greats on the list, no matter how good some musicians are individually.

32 tracks...... I can't stand phony over the top singers. But I love a good "Yeah" or yell in the middle of my grooves. Sometimes I feel like this guy is like a caricature of a Rock Genius. But it might be his lyrics, or that voice that is giving me pause. But by the end I was enjoying myself. I really enjoyed the band for sure, will definitely have this on in the background of a BBQ. distortion out of 5

There are a couple of albums on this list that I didn't finish, but this one might be closer to "Did Not Start". The album opens with a ridiculous wail, repeats it a few times with some added distortion, then manages to get even less pleasant to listen to. I made it two tracks, scanned a bit further into the album, then gave up.

Dur de se faire une tête sur cet album. Clairement intéressant et très avant-gardiste, mais parfois dur à suivre.

More punky and funky than I expected, given the band name. Not too shabby.

Who would've thought that the band that wrote Bellbottoms, a song I enjoy immensely, would write other songs that I enjoy immensely. I can hear so many influences in bands I like coming out of this album - BDoD, VU (inspired by), Autolux even. A great modern garage rock LP

A little too unpolished for me

Some blues! Should be interesting. Yeah, that's not blues. Not a fan. Lots of screaming and shouting and out of tune music......the brief bits I listened to.

Not bad but not great. Didn't finish the album because it was way too long and too much of the exact same thing.

I've been waiting to get this album since I saw it was in the bottom ten of the entire book for a while. Not trying to be contrarian, but I really enjoyed this. This album is some dirty blues. I can see how it would be abrassive to some, especially on the first few tracks, but once you get into the madness, it's easy to get lost in. Favorite tracks: "Chicken Dog", "Hot Shit", "R.L. Got Soul"

An interesting fusion of punk and blues. 3.5
