Reviews (page 10 of 13)

The vocals are a little bit morose but generally a chilled out album. Shame Beck sounds the human incarnation of Eeyore.

Subdued rock, weinig sprankelende melodieën of muzikale composities. Wel prettig om naar te luisteren op de achtergrond.

It was cute - but i could have also not have heard this album.. but i did enjoy it !

I wasn't expecting this - a break-up country rock album. It wasn't exactly the Friday I'm in Love start to the weekend that was needed. The Nigel Godrich influence comes over strong. This could be an outtake of Radiohead songs sung by smiling Thom's US cousin. It's high quality, just not the type of quality that I need these days.

Great voice. Nice sounds. Not my jam.

Nigel Godrich can produce that's for sure. I think I prefer Beck's less folksy stuff. This gets a bit too mopey for me but at the same time doesn't move me emotionally. The tempo seemed to stay the same for a lot of this album + makes me feel like I was just plodding along. I'm a bit of a sucker for a pedal steel guitar in a not-quite 100% conventional country song setting, so I really enjoyed it's consistent presence throughout. Favs: Paper Tiger, Lonesome Tears, Round The Bend (I really love the strings on these); Little One (grungey); Side Of The Road (bluesy)

Decent enough work from an artist I’ve never found particularly riveting, and that didn’t change here.

Like most of Beck's catalogue, it's pleasant enough to listen to, but nothing I'd normally seek out. A bit more accessible than his later stuff. "Lost Cause" the highlight for me.

Moody and atmospheric. Cool, but not really for me.

Very somber album. Some of Beck’s best singing and emotion. Appreciate the effort, but an entire album of ballads is not for me.

I love beck. this slow and mourning sounding beck is my least favorite, though. This music is beautiful but not quite my cup of tea.

Didn’t mind this. Again, not really my vibe, but made for some nice, post-work, mid-painting tunes. 3/5

Musically well crafted, the vocals did not engage me on initial listen

An enjoyable listen. Back half started to run together though

Not my favorite from Beck, was a bit too slow and low-key, I need at least a couple of upbeat songs to keep me in it!

A good album. Very chilled, easy listening but a little dull by the end.

Pleasant, chill music. I liked it, but nothing really stood out. I'm not sure I could identify a song that was on the album if I heard it again.

Good lyrics

Quite pleasant. Dreamy folk-rock-pop.

Nice listen

It really is a downer but I guess that's the point.

très bien me donne envie d'être autour d'un feu !

Eh. Beck... is Beck.

not to say i am a blind adherent to parasocial relationships but i have not thought fondly of beck since the 2015 grammys. therefore i was somewhat reluctant to listen to this when it popped up. after listening to it i can say that yes, it's not exactly a music genre/vibe i would gravitate towards, but he is definitely talented and it shows. beautiful music and beautiful execution. album highlight: lost cause. rating it a bit lower just because it's not my cup of tea but remember a 2.5/5 is actually a completely neutral rating! 2.5/5

Overall I like the sound of it, though it's a somber vibe.

Fun album, chill.

Never heard this album except for one song. Not what I'm used to hearing from Beck, but he is a musical chameleon. I like it but would prefer more upbeat acoustic songs.

His worst folk album imo, but I'm a massive one foot in the grave fan

Lots of nice tracks, nothing particularly memorable but a solid album. Light 3.5

Honestly, solid songwriting and really good production. Don't really have too many specific complaints overall, but didn't strike me down like a bolt of lightning. Will maybe return to it another time and see if it sticks a bit better. Three and a half. Fave track: End Of The Day

I love Beck. He’s the coolest man alive. He actually saved my one and only time at Glastonbury by being the first decent act I saw across the weekend (second last on on the last night…), so I’ll always be grateful to him for making an otherwise drab festival be worthwhile. That said, this isn’t my favourite thing he’s ever done. Beck for me is at his best when he’s fusing hip hop with lofi rock. It’s a good record for what it is, but aint in quintessential Beck for me. Out of everything he has done I was surprised this was chosen for the list.

This is fine. It's pretty, gentle, and melancholic, but it's a bit too passive and fades into the background too easily. I think it would require a really dedicated listen to properly appreciate it, and I don't think that it's good enough to warrant that. It'll grow on me over time, but for now it's a pleasant background listen and not a lot more. 3/5, just.

This was pretty good, if somewhat unremarkable.

I enjoyed this, started off better than it finished, but has a lot of the more melodic/easy listening Beck which I like.

Very pleasant

Good background music. Can't fault the songwriting or the performance but it's not really for me

kinda cool i would aay

I'm excited for this one. I actually kinda like his newer stuff better. Same with The Eels. This is so much different than Loser. It's slow and heart felt. I don't know I'll say 3 on this one.

Enjoyed but not that much

Album 96 of 1001 Beck - Sea Change Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Guess I'm Doing Fine Sad, Melancholy Beck. What a low energy album. Didn't do it for me. If I want something like this, I can call on Leonard Cohen, who was doing it decades earlier. Not terrible, but nothing that truly grabbed my interest.

Better than expected. I don’t know Beck very well, as I mostly hear his more popular songs through the radio. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed how certain songs had a nice acoustic feel and sound, yet he maintained his alternative style through certain songs like “Sunday Sun”.

Was ok. Not for me though. A little TOO chill.

It's got moments sounding Nick Drake like, moments of sound quite cool early 00s indie, but as a package its really tedious. Someone needed to make a few cuts in the editing suite.

Quite interesting record: the songs on it are very nice and the overall project is definetely enjoyable. Just a good album like many others, after all.

BL: Beck is an artist my dad really likes but I’ve never personally had too much of a chance to get into him because I’ve never given him a go. Hopefully this’ll be a good jumping off point. AL: I thought this album was pretty solid. The opener is an absolute banger, however everything else it did feel it plateau’d around the ok to pretty good mark, no other super exceptional tracks I thought. Though nothing felt wasted and the album did not feel bloated in any capacity. FT: “the golden age” 3/5

Sad, gorgeous. Contains one of my favourite Beck songs of all time - Lost Cause.

le boug est tristounet

Notwithstanding *Rolling Stones*'s raving review at the time, this here is NOT Beck's best album. Which does not mean that *Sea Change* does not have its share of brilliant moments. "Paper Tiger" winks at Serge Gainsbourg and the string section in his groovy and bass-heavy *Histoire de Melody Nelson*--too bad the song itself is less memorable than its lush production values ; "The Golden Age" and "Guess I'm Doing Fine" are cool country-tinged, steel-guitar-enhanced numbers, but musically speaking, they're almost the same tune (apart from a few different chords here and there)--which is a little annoying given that they almost follow one another at the start of this LP ; "Lonesome Tears" and "Sunday Sun" can boast harboring the most intense choruses in the album, thanks to their angsty minor harmonies (performed on strings for the first and on a piano for the second)--I wish more cuts displayed harmonies like that in the LP ; "Lost Cause" is a very simple break-up song. *Simple* being an asset and not a flaw here--even if it seems there is something lacking at the end of this one ; "It's All In Your Mind" sees Mr. Hansen successfully revisit an emotional outtake from his earlier grassroots LP *One Foot In The Grave* ; "Round The Bend", another cut with a pivotal string section, sounds so much like a Nick Drake song circa *Five Leaves Left* (à la "River Man" or "Way To Blue") that it is even a little embarassing to listen to, as nice as the track is ; as for the faraway acoustic guitars of "Already Dead", they bring an interesting mood to the table--nice but not "essential". The thing is, this record is also a very "glossy" affair, probably thanks to the spacy, reverb-drenched production of Nigel Godrich, of *OK Computer* and *Kid A* fame. I'm pretty sure that for a lot of initial Beck fans, the association between the two men is a pretty good match, but to me, it's not necessarily one made in heaven. See "Little One", a great song in itself, but way too clean-sounding here, stifling its potentially " biting" ingredients. To most fans out there, Beck will always be more endearing through his earlier lo-fi, "patchy-on-purpose", surreal and sarcastic masterpieces *Mellow Gold* and *Odelay* anyway. The "classic", seventies-sounding, *Harvest*-like feel he aims at for this record doesn't exactly fit the postmodernist troubadour that he is at heart (see "End Of the Day", for instance--probably the most boring song in this collection, and the lowest point of the album). And even in that "introspective" mood such as the one displayed in *Sea Change*, Beck Hansen has proven that he can craft tunes that are far more effective overall. Listen to the the DIY, Calvin Johnson-recorded *One Foot In The Grave*, or even *Mutations* (marking Beck and Godrich's first collaboration, incidentally). As intimate and low-key as those earlier records were, they were not "one-note" at all: they had their share of little suprises and welcomed 180-degree turns, which kept them lively for most of their runtime. In comparison, *Sea Change* is very much a one-note affair. And this sort of one-note mode is NOT the one in which Beck shines the best, even though I admit that *some* of the songs in this album have grown on me, finally. So I'll leave the door open for this LP in my own list, and will probably revisit it again. But I doubt there will be any room left for it by the time I finish my list. 3/5 for the purposes of this list of "essential" records, translating to a 8/10 mark for more "general" purposes (5 + 3). Next, please. Number of albums left to review: 542 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 221 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 107 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 132

If someone were to ask if I like Beck, I would say yes but I realize I've listened to less than half of his albums by this point - this was a first listen to this one, which I now is beloved by many. I feel like this might be a great listen while driving alone in the dark. It's very well crafted and well produced but didn't really do a whole heck of a lot for me. At least at this time - I wouldn't hesitate to give it another go or two as well.

It was okay. I'm not a fan of Beck the person, but Beck the musician was good.

Enjoyed ethereal ballad Beck more than some of the earlier stuff. Paper Tiger was great.

Not as zany as expected...more just quiet and whiny.

Not bad at all, but I like most of his other albums better. Favorite song: Paper Tiger

I never really got into beck, but this was the album I listened to most because a cute girl liked it. Listening back, it's quite the mope. I still dig lost cause though.

The album is a bit slow for my taste but still listenable.

Nice but without energy

Decent album. Not his best but worth another listen

unremarkable

20th April 2023 Listened while working from home, did bits on the house and watched race across the world in the evening. Beck retreats and introverts on this solemn but poetic offering.

I remember a few of these songs, and I still like them. I hadn't heard the full album before and I'm glad this project gave me a good reason to listen to it. I think he's a very strong writer and performer, and I like the way he puts his songs together. Good stuff.

Blander then I would have expected, not really anything particularly memorable. Perhaps one that would benefit from repeated listen listening.

Tykkäsin! Herkkä mutta monipuolinen. Olen kuunnellut vähän, mutta selkeesti liian vähän.

Ihan kivaa masistelua. Beck on vähän kaksijakoinen artisti omassa mielessä. Hipoo liiallista dramaattisuutta, mutta jotenkin pysyy kuitenkin aina kuivilla ja biisit toimii. 3,5/5.

3/5. This one may increase over time but I’m sticking with 3 because it was good, the songs were catchy, some beautiful, but it didn’t keep me super interested. Many of them flowed into one another and I was done with the album when I thought I was only halfway. That’s not a good sign.

A lot more chill and melancholic sounding songs than what I would have expected from Beck. An alright album but lacked a bit of energy

It's fine but I prefer my Beck to be the happy Beck with samples and weird instrumentation. I guess I've also just never been a huge fan of the woe is me breakup album genre.

Some good stuff but not really keen on his style

Very pleasant. Don’t need to listen again.

Sleepy little thing, this one is. It needs that scene from any hospital movie. You know...the scene where the doctor rubs the paddles, yells "Clear!", and jolts the body back to life? And it either works, or we call time of death. This album deserves to live. "Clear!"

Sad album but still pretty good. Not Beck's best.

Mellow and somewhat depressing, but still esasy listening

3 again?

Not my favorite Beck. It's quite a change from his other stuff. Not that it's bad, it's just not what I really like about his music.

Interesting

Relaxing. Nice to listen to and chill.

Very chill, could almost forget it was playing

decently nice to listen to i like it 3.5/5

It’s nice smooth and emotional which are all amazing but with that comes a bit of samieness which makes an already long album drag. 3/5

A bit soppy, slow, cute, indie, emosh. A touch over quirky for me. Reminds me of a great doc about this dude who can't get erections.

The Golden Age - first listen: 1.6/3 Paper Tiger - fl: 1.7/3 Guess I'm Doing Fine - fl: 1.5/3 Lonesome Tears - fl: 1.8/3 Lost Cause - fl: 1.7/3 End of The Day - fl: 1.5/3 It's All In Your Mind - fl: 1.6/3 Round The Bend - fl: 1.5/3 Already Dead - fl: 1.8/3 Sunday Sun - fl: 1.7/3 Little One - fl: 1.6/3 Side of the Road - fl: 1.4/3 Final Verdict: Beautiful Album. Good intro but wonky end (instrumentally).

It was nice. I feel like if I re-listen to it I’ll like it more, but this time nothing really stuck out to me.

Need to give this one a second listen. It’s sitting at around the 3 star mark but it piqued my interest

Could've been the most beautiful sounding folk rock album I've ever heard if it wasn't so overdone and overlong. I get why others would love it, but it got boring after the first few (amazing) tracks.

Grew on me as album progressed. Very much an album.

- indie rock nick drake - ok but not insanely unique 3/5

Beck does his usual schtick, to a fairly consist affect here. His lower tones sound good but he isn’t really doing anything out of this world here. Easy consistent indie pop…put out by a master of this sort of thing.

I can appreciate why Beck is featured on the list, but despite loving so many things Beck-adjacent, I am just not a Beck fan. First it was the pretentious irony which turned me off, then it was just his voice. Sorry, just not for me. That said, I like the *idea* of this sweeping, thoughtfully composed album, even if I don't like listening to it. I get why it's here. But also, it's insanely long, especially for a non-Beck fan. So here we are. I can't give it a strong positive rating, but I realize it was deserving of acclaim and that this is MY PROBLEM. So, 3/5.

Definitely different than the music I associate with Beck. This is mostly straightforward guitar music about heartbreak for adults. Who hurt you, Beck?

Beck does Nick Drake. Nice enough and 'Lost Cause' is a super pretty song but not a hugely remarkable album.

fake radiohead 2.75

All the songs sounded like the could've been featured on an early 2000's TV drama series.

The kind of introspective mope-rock much more effectively peddled by the likes of Red House Painters. For me, I just don’t buy Beck assuming this new moniker of contemplative, depressed sad boy. The sombre tone of the album can’t really be criticised, but the lack of structural variation in these songs definitely emphasises its lumbering length. The production is mellow and downbeat, and it works well for the most part. But I think that the rather reserved contemporary criticism this album received upon its release is far more reflective of its overall strengths and weaknesses than the hysterical praise this album receives today. It’s very much middle-of-the-road, though it does threaten to be a half decent record.

This was quite the change for Beck, and while I admire the drive to do something different, this album didn't quite land for me. There are some worthwhile tracks on here, for sure - 'The Golden Age', 'Guess I'm Doing Fine', 'Round the Bend', to name a few - but overall, I wasn't captivated in the same way that I was with Beck's older other work, particularly 'Odelay'.

Wanted to like this. Some parts are Nick Drake Pink Moon, which I love. But there was nothing stand out.

52 minutes of melancholic acoustic ballads with natural melodies and subtle orchestral arrangements. It's a very nice record, but a little lacking in humour and lyrics depth beyond 'I am sad and fed up'. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Guess I'm Doing Fine Date listened: 30/12/22

I didn't listen to a lot of Beck post Odelay. This is fine but it just reminds me of when he made better stuff.

I liked this. I was a big fan of Midnite Vultures, but didn't find the stylistic change jarring. Back when Odelay came out, there was a lot of talk about Beck being the big thing that was going to take us to the next stage. I didn't see it then and I don't see it now, but I still like some of what he does. This was a more vulnerable record. It feels more organic, and more real than his earlier records. It's a mopey affair, so I found I needed to break it into two sessions to listen to the whole thing.

Didn't love it, didn't hate...pretty much right down the middle of the highway on this one. it's a tad depressing but so what, so is the world some days...but still gets a depressing 2.5 for middle of the roadness.

Enjoyed sad Beck

Holy Melancholy Batman! This introspective and vulnerable side of Beck makes this album easier to like than the other offering from 1001.

While I like the arrangements, songwriting and overall sound, Beck's dreary voice brings the album down. It reminds me a bit of Nick Drake but not as upbeat.

The title of this album is apt as it represents a significant departure from Beck's typical sound which is more dance and white hip hop oriented. I guess breaking up with a long-time girlfriend will do that to a guy. There's nothing as high energy as Loser, or with the abrasiveness of E-Pro, but there are some real gems here like The Golden Age, Guess I'm doing fine and Lonesome tears where his mournful voice really shines. Unfortunately this album doesn't have my favourite Beck song which is the brilliant Everybody's gotta learn sometime, which was one of the most memorable moments in the film The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind. That song alone is worth five stars IMO.

Becks depressing break up album is stripped down of samples but still contains some sumptuous orchestrations. The production is brilliant however its all a bit "woe is me" and the there are no stand out tracks. Its more mature than Odelay and Midnite Vultures but it is also more melancholic and tbh a little less fun. 3

Sea Change is the eighth album by American musician Beck. This gold certified acoustic folk rock album is different from Beck's previous works, but still performed well commercially. It had themes of change, loss, and relationship struggles that the common person could connect with. The music was a little slow to me, but also beautifully somber. It's a well done album that has and will continue to entertain many people.

Damn. This is one club I’d love to be a part of, since it seems like you all developed such a deep connection to this album, and I want that for me too! But I am gonna have to sit on the sidelines here. Beck’s vocals just sound kind of uninspired and I’m having a hard time latching on to many of these melodies. The best element for me is the production. There are some really lush and trippy arrangements here that make me want to play this on iTunes visualizer and just stare at my computer screen. And I really like the song Guess I’m Doing Fine, which sounds like Neil Young but not in a rip-off kinda way. The line “it’s only lies that I’m living, it’s only tears that I’m crying” is a simple beauty.

Ägt lite skivor med Beck genom åren. Denna platta har jag dock aldrig hört förut. Tror det krävs att man måste lyssna på albumet flera gånger innan den sitter.

A different kind of beck album. This one was melancholy and a bit more introspective. The tone was rather sad but had some interesting beats and instrumentals throughout. I thought it was pretty decent but was an album that needed a specific mood to listen. 6.6/10

It's fine. A bit of a downer. Not quite what I'm into

OK, but Lost Cause stands head and shoulders above the rest of the songs.

I'm going to be generous with three stars because the instrumentation was fantastic as was the production. This started out as an interesting experiment and really showed Beck's versatility, but it ended up just being boring.

i’m just never going to be a beck fan, i always find him unbearably corny

Never listened to beck. I only knew that he did the scott pilgrim soundtrack. some nice tracks in the middle. Not bad, 3 stars

Its nice enough but not especially noteworthy

I love Beck Hansen. Just not this version so much.

If I had my heart broken recently this would go hard but that’s not the case. Beck is sad

Le problème de Beck, c'est que tout le monde se fout de sa musique. À raison d'ailleurs.

Folk rock. Lento. Aburrido.

listening

Is the album chooser going through a breakup? Debbie downer picks.

Chill with some catchy melodies

Few good songs and dig the mellow vibes in general.

Nice for a subdued listen. The first half of the album was stronger than the second half

I've not heard much Beck other than the really popular songs. It was a pretty chill relaxing album. Not something I'll come back to but still enjoyable. I wouldn't mind this as background music in other settings.

Beck is not within my scope of listening, but I appreciate his musicality, especially instrumentally. At times I found his voice to be drab but there were songs on this album I did overall enjoy.

No me disgusta, pero tampoco me ha gustado. 3 bajo

Tad slow but interesting album that gets better near the end

It felt like very inspired background music. I know it's a good one, but maybe I've listened too much of its kind at some point in my life and I'm kinda numb to it, I'm sorry lol

Not at all what I expected to hear from a Beck album. This is so personal it feels almost embarrassing to listen to, almost voyeuristic. Because Beck emerged at a time when I went through a very difficult time emotionally I tend to connect his music to those memories even though there is nothing realistic about that. Here I find him living through and expressing the pain and loss I had and it’s almost comforting. I really wish I had had these songs then.

solid moody man music

I liked it okay, but none of the songs other than the couple I already knew stood out to me.

Chill album. Much different sound then first album.

Easy listening, voice didn’t match picture

Mellow and serene but not for me.

Sounds like just another Beck album.

I think I like this one better than odelay but it was still a typical beck album where he showcases his jack of all trades abilities this time with bluesy folk rock. I liked little one but otherwise nothing stood out too much.

Sea Change reminded me a lot of Nick Drake. Kinda love key for Beck.

I've always wanted to like Beck more than I do. This album has some nice semi-psychedelic moments and plenty of lovely melodies but it never quite hits as I think it should.

melancholy..but powerful and good. 3 or 4 standout songs. = 3.4444

Sea plus

Super chill. I really liked it.

ima keep it real with you chief, I listened to this in the background while working. it seems solid, but it also made me want to sleep.

Poetic, thoughtful.

I stopped tracking Beck at Odelay. I liked this okay, though not much of it really stood out from the overall melancholy.

beck is like high-quality boring music. not for me. 3/5.

not bad, less good than the other Beck album we had

Sounds like a Nick Drake album but too well produced. It's good, but it loses the charm. Still happy to have found something I appreciate from Beck.

Picture Odelay coming out in peak high school days. It goes on repeat ad infinitum. Know every word. Love it. College sophomore home for the summer buys this album. Broke college ass: "I just paid $21.99 for this shit?!" I listened through it once and only once. I hated it. Now it's 20 years later. How does it stack up? I'm much more receptive to this kind of an album now and I can def. see why I felt that way back then. Shit, part of me still agrees, however there is a lot more to appreciate on here than I ever did before. Paper Tiger is excellent. Lost Cause is very very good. So is Sunday Sun. This is worth more listens, but it will never stack up with the nostalgia of his early stuff for me, despite how much I can appreciate a lot more of it now.

Very pretty. Didn’t stick with me so much beyond that. I’ll probably change my mind later

A real sombre album from Beck, with themes including loneliness, heartbreak and desolation, it proved a turning point for Beck musically. Going from a highly experimental musician to a much more emotionally charged view - both lyrically and sonically. It was an easy listen, however it was pretty mood deflating. Best: Lost Cause Worst: Round the Bend

This one I've heard before. Didn't like it in 2002, not a fan now. When am I supposed to listen to this? As in, it ain't fun. Depressed, soft songs. Not bad at all, just not dynamic in most any way. Would avoid a purchase. But it is... okay. Better Beck albums before this one. Not sure if there are any after this.

A decent album with some good moments but altogether not that memorable.

slower simmer rock with light electronic sprinkles. Beck's muttering and the wistful vibes all blend together and are kinda hard to remember

I really like already dead.

Sad boi indie folk. Yeah, it's done well enough here, but I've heard it done so many, many times, and this doesn't stand out too much to me from much of what's been released before and since

Pretty slow

Interessante

slow waves

Beck heeft pieken, dalen en blijkbaar ook muziek voor een hutje halverwege de berg.

Dit vond ik best aardig. Wel heel mellow voor Beck's doen.

Prima aan te horen maar voor Beck’s doen een beetje tam.

Not a huge fan of Beck, this album was decent and had a nice calming atmosphere but just wasn't my bag.

I enjoyed this one. Beck's one of those artists that's been around for a while now, just doing whatever it is he does. Not someone I've ever found or listened to organically, but based on recommendations or accolades only. A bit of an enigma in that way, I don't understand him. But this was a cool album. He was doing something of an Eddie Vedder type voice on this, and I don't think that's how he always sounds, but I'm no Beckspert. Favorite tracks: Paper Tiger, Lost Cause, Round the Bend, Side of the Road. Album art: Looks like that picture of Halsey. It also feels much newer than it actually is. Based on looks alone I would've guessed like 2014. 3.5/5

Not my favorite Beck but enjoyed it!

To mellow

A good album, just not a great one. Beck has always been a chameleon and some of his musical dalliances have been amazing. He is at his weakest when he does the folky thing which is where he got his start. It is refreshing to see him not lean into the weird vibe of previous outings which he could have easily done. If only the material was as strong as his earlier stuff

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Lost cause

An interesting and depressing album.

Though more highly rated by many, this isn't even in my top 3 favorite Beck albums. But it's damn good. I'm trying to figure out why it's not one of my favorites, and it might be because I've never had a world-weary heartbreaking depression. But though I've not shared his experience, even I am moved by the brutal resignation of the album's centerpiece, "Lost Cause". It's a devastating meditation on what's left behind when the love of your life has rejected you. I cannot imagine how subhuman one would feel in that situation.

Monotone enough to read a book through.

Better than his sample work which I really don’t enjoy. This album has no greatness, but it wasn’t bad at all. Nice guitar parts and melody. His voice reminded me a little of the great grunge singers of the 90s.

Not sure why this album is groundbreaking enough to be on the list but asides from that, its certainly not bad, just also nothing remarkable either. No highlights make for a long listening

The title says it all. Melancholy and moody. Beck has a knack for songwriting.

The first couple of tracks sound like Beck half-ass emulating more-interesting country songs of the past, but by the time the album ended, I was a believer. It is uneven at times, some parts clearly more inspired than others, but a good record nonetheless.

First time listening to Beck and this was the perfect album to start with. Despite it being one of his most personal albums, I enjoyed the variety of styles Beck used on this album. He might not be an artist I will listen to often but definitely made an impression on me. Stand Out Songs: Lonesome Tears, Little One

A little melancholy for Shannah’s taste but nice in the background. Bill finds it nice and melancholy, good for the background. Conor found the background to be nicely melancholy. (2.7/5)

Good background music. Did not make me melancholy. I believe it was the sound of the colour of saudade, which is orangey blue. Would listen again.

Slow Beck. Sad Beck. Okay Beck.

I like Beck but this isn't my favorite album by him. It's not bad but any means by I prefer when he's genre hopping and more lively. It's not bad for "sadboy" music but I have other go-to stuff when I want to be morose.

Technically brilliant - though missing the diversity of skills I know Beck has.

Pretty mellow for beck. Good.

Interesting but nothing really stood out.

A lot more downbeat to the Beck stuff I am used to and it suffers for me because of that. Can see why he named the album so.

It's good. More slow Beck than my preferable upbeat Beck. But good..

Not overly taken with this. It maybe a couple of tracks too long. There is some promise of change with repeated plays.

2.5/5. I did not rally like this. It was just sad and boring.

Do druge pjesme već sam zaboravio da slušam Becka honestly možd zato jer znam samo singlove. Solidan album svakako, s tim da je druga polovica disproporcionalno dosadnija i lošija od prve.

The sort of artist I would expect to like, in that he's heavily influenced by folk country and the Blues. Maybe I would like it more if I listened to it more. Will look out for his other stuff.

Ett toppalbum. man gillar verkligen detta. bleep bloop.

some pleasant folk

Pues es que es un disco bonito a ratos, pero muy muy muy nostálgico y se llega a volver aburrido. Obviamente me gusta Lost Cause, pero después de eso creo que es oír la misma rola una y otra vez.

Genre: Folk Rock 3/5 Beck made something nice and pretty here. Not earth shattering by any stretch, but sleak production, good songwriting, and some nice moody arrangments sold this thing pretty well. I'm not quite sure why it's in this book, it is good, but I don't see it as any thing but a continuation of pop rock of the early 2000s. It does say Beck on it, though. First half was super strong, I really enjoyed Paper Tiger, but it all sort of blended into one as it went along. No real sense of urgency, and nothing too much in the way of challening the form. But a well-made album, overall.

Pleasing, meandering, psychedelic noodling.

Good singer but I shouldnt buy an album of him.

See it and change

He's got a great voice, but I just don't think I'd ever listen to this recreationally

En ganska blek Nick Drake-kopia.

Really soft and mellow, but nice to listen to. Zero recognized songs

Sorry Beck, I understand you got really into folk music but it doesn't do it for me. Knowing this is a breakup album does give some weight to the emotions expressed, but the album itself never feels like it goes much of anywhere

A lot to like but I've listened to this enough over the years to know I'm never going to be heavily invested in it

Many of these songs, like the ones on the previous two albums, are fairly predictable, but elsewhere Beck uses elegant arrangements to enhance the emotion hidden in the lyrics and to downplay the simplicity of his delivery. (6/10) FT: Lost Cause, Golden Age

Not my thing

Pretty good. Not the best Beck album in my opinion but did enjoy it

A Beck album. Enjoyable, but nothing earth shattering

Phu

Enjoyed it, quickly became background music though

Not my fave beck

I love this stage of Beck's progression. Looking back through his discography, I fee like I notice more and more of the sounds developing that you hear in Guero. This is one of his sadder feeling albums to me, little slow for a Monday morning.

Slow acoustic vibes with lyrics from the heart. Hard to listen to the whole album tbh but each track hits the spot it’s supposed to

It's nice background music.

Bon mood pour un réveil à 11h avec une bonne gueule de bois Sinon pas trop mon genre

Meh...There's some good individual songs here that sound great in isolation, but a whole albums worth of slow, melancholy break up songs that all end up sounding similar gets really old, really quickly.

May not be his best but it’s hard not to like beck

A much more reflective and personal album than Beck's preceeding ones. Deserves a second listen

Pleasant and gentle folk pop. A million miles from Oderlay and Midnite Vultures. What a talented and versatile musician!

Very good. Easy listen. 3/5

Bold decision to put Michael Cera on the album art.

Sea Change is not of of my preferred Beck albums. After listening to it once again for this list, I must admit it is still a solid piece of music. It's sort of a back to the basics idea with simpler lyrics and real instruments and less electronics/sampling. It is lacking a real classic song though.

Nice acoustics and composition. Often hard to distinguish songs from another due to similar pace and tone. Feels like a rainy day blues kind of record and maybe a decent one. Curious to see if Beck has other dimensions. Paper tiger, end of the day, Sonny Sunday, little one

Album has so many listens but I'm not really into it. Lyrics are pretty sad and serious.

mopey sad boy music that nonetheless tickled my love of a good hook here and there. not bad

Feels pretty raw listening to this album - the man sounds gutted after his break up. Sunday Sun is amazing. Some neat songwriting here. Three for now could be a four later.

Far from Beck's best, yet a nice and very melodic (and relaxing) album despite the obvious personal crisis that triggered it. Bit too un-exciting for me, but definitely great for certain moods.

Just a lot of the same sad song. A good listen, still. Generally beautiful music with sad and soft (sometimes unintelligible) vocals. A bunch of the songs also did the gimmicky devolve into distortion at the end. A couple of songs had my attention but none were really engaging or memorable.

So Beck is one of those that I never really "got". Sure there was a good single or two but it seems like his music is held in such high regard. I gotta say, this was pretty darn good. Decent variety, not relying on a gimmick or an overused signature sound. 3.5, I can't quite give it a 4 though.

You OK, dude? You sound like you accidentally hotboxed your apartment while the Collected Works of Gordon Lightfoot was on repeat.

All of it was good but nothing really stood out

Always been Beck-neutral. Nothing changing here

Not sure what to make of this, quite a difficult album. You really need to be in the mood for this, much more melancholy than I was expecting and drags a bit at times but there is a lot to enjoy too and I would revisit. Paper Tiger the pick of the bunch for me - superb track - but some other very good tracks on here too.

Nice, good album. I like the opening track 'Golden Age' and always been a fan of 'Lost Cause'. Like many albums I would suggest there are too many tracks.

It was obviously good production. But just a bit dull on first listen. I’m sure subsequent listens would get under the skin.

pretty good

Folk beck

Didn't expect this kind of album from Beck. Liked it way more that I thought I would've. The songwriting is my favorite part, really nice arrangements. The acoustic was nice and he really just created an atmosphere. Would definitely listen again. Standout tracks Lost Cause and Already Dead. 6/10

Inte riktigt min kopp av te, men mysig gitarrskiva typ

Just ok. Not as lively as some of his better stuff but pretty good.

these transitions are ILL not his best work but good! best track: sunday sun

I've never understood the appeal of Beck. Too mellow for me.

mellow, acoustic vibe with electric overtones, dark and moody and smooth. mumbly vocal, nice feel overall. replay value low

A really nice listen, very somber and chill. Music to leave earth, and all its dumb stuff, in a spacesuit and float away to.

What I expected from beck for the most part. This album was a little more acoustic.

Damn good album to chill too. Not my taste but I see the appeal.

Not bad, definitely a sadder, mellower Beck.

Intro track was nice tbf

Not a fan of Beck. Always thought he was average. This album didn’t change my mind.

A very chilled album on a lazy Sunday 👏

I've never been the biggest fan of Beck, but this is a decent album. 7.2/10

I like the strings in the album. Overall a little slow but not mad.

Nie jest to mój ulubiony Beck. Do słuchania pojedynczych kawałków albo w tle spoko, ale ciurkiem wszystko zlewa się w jeden, dosyć monotonny potok dźwięków.

**ck's Sea change is mostly uninteresting, Lost Cause was good though

Sehr dramatic

Despite growing up the child of Beck fans I can't say I really got into his music until Morning Phase, which I'd still probably list as one of my top 10 albums of all time. It's not surprising then that my first reaction to putting on this ablum was, "wait this sounds just like Morning Phase." I'm sure I had read they were companions at some point but can't say I ever gave this one a listen. All in all this album has all the guitar goodness and interesting range that makes me love Morning Phase (and generally appreciate Beck). However, knocking points b/c they really do have almost too many similarities with Morning Phase still coming out on top for me. Why put on Sea Change when you can put on Morning Phase?

Starts nicely enough but doesn't go anywhere. Spending one day and one listen on it maybe unfair though

Sounds like a homage to the greats both musically and lyrically but it doesn't sound quite right.

Really nice opening track and the rest was fine too but quite forgettable

Half way through first track and all I can think is Radiohead "Fake Plastic Trees" and "No Surprises" combined with a bit of slide guitar. I thought the album was a nice listen, but it felt like background music to me. It's similar to the Springsteen album in that I don't really get the significance of it. It's not his biggest, best or first album, in fact other than some critical acclaim at the time it doesn't seem to have really influenced much at all. It's just because it's a revered artist basically. 6/10

Definitely not the best Beck album I've listened to. Some good tunes, but didn't seem as eclectic as others.

I just kept waiting for more---very relaxed but needed a kick or two or bump it up.

not his strongest album

This certainly isn't Beck's strongest album but I think it does it's job well. He was inspired to write this after him and his long time girlfriend split, and boy is this ever a breakup album. Every song is dripping with melancholy. Needed scuba gear as I was swimming through all these Beck tears. I really liked Maddie's comparison of this and Morning Phase as companion albums. To me, Morning Phase always felt like a hopeful ray of sun on your face to wake you up in the morning, and in contrast this album certainly feels more like the sun setting on a lovely day thats come to an abrupt end. I found that the orchestration on this album added some much needed power to his overly earnest songwriting. "Lost Cause," really stood out to me in this regard. It wasn't Beck's most inventive songwriting by any means, and seemed to rely on cliched lines and motifs. This song kind of summed up the rest of the album for me. He sounds hurt but uninspired. I feel that this album was strictly made for Beck to process his feelings and move on with his life. It feels inconsequential in Beck's discography to me but I'm sure to him it was a very important record to make.

The Golden Age is big space cowboy vibes. very much a low key breakup album, nice for zoning out but I didnt really get much out of it

Nice album for reflecting on relationships lost.

I didnt mind it, kind of stoner music

Couldn't review, it makes me very sleepy. Is it good? Is it bad? No idea. 5/10

I remember illegally downloading a few of these tracks in high school. Ages back, hence awful quality- was good to listen to in a higher bit rate. Pretty good, some Vedder-ish vocals creep in

Pretty solid throughout, just not something I always vibe with. "Guess I'm doing fine" and "Lost Cause" were standouts to me. Beck's voice sounded way different here than I was used to, and I liked the folk rock and western vibes at times. Better than a 3 for me, but I can't call this one a 4.

Was kind of excited to try this album, but ultimately I found it to be a little boring. A few good songs.

relaxing

Quite a different version of Beck, with this album. It seems more serious, a more somber Beck. Not a bad thing, it shows a more emotional range and an ability to showcase his different side. Not my favorite Beck but he always shows a willingness to explore something different and this is just that : Beck but Different.

It was fine, I’m guessing/hoping there are better Beck albums

this was nice. minimalistic, soft and sad. slightly cliche but overall enjoyable and easy to listen to.

Too sad. Good music but no fun to listen to.

Quite a few snoozers on this

Fav Song: Paper Tiger

I forgot how mellow this record is. Pretty good, though.

Mood triste - mais pas mal

Bit miserable but ok. Forgettable

I much prefer my sad songs to not be so slow, which I know sounds silly. It was alright. I think the combination of his voice and the slowness of the songs got to me after a bit. Made it feel like it dragged on a bit. I also don’t like that it seems like he’s mumbling a bit. I don’t mind incomprehensible lyrics but this type of singing is not my cup of tea. All that being said, definitely not the worst album.

Liked it a lot, was expecting a lot more wierd stuff. But nope nice smooth album will listen again.

It's alright but I guess the lyrics are what's making it as the music isn't too special for me and the singing is kind of mumbly

Love it

closer to a 3.5

It just doesn’t really go anywhere? Plods along with a lot of same sounding tracks blending into one.

Just slipped and slid right off me I'm afraid nice sounding background music and not a lot more on this occasion

I liked the first couple songs, finishing was a chore however

is beck and moby the same guy

4/10 - this is a depressing fella, reminds me of Sufjan Stevens
