A Sad Bastard classic
Favorite Beck album, and my favorite sad album. Probably a top 20 all timer for me. Really connected with me.
Love this record always.
Cool style with good music. The album is redundant, all the songs sound the same and it gets old after a while. But still really good. 5/10
it's good it kinda sounds like something from the 70s. reminds me a little of david bowie i like the really dreamy vocals and the guitar and it just sounds like...hazey and stuff lol. surprisingly good!! i just wouldve liked a bit MORE, it felt boring at some parts (this is from the pov of a non music nerd, so)

I appreciate the simplicity of the song structure. Not trying to do too much, but beautifully recorded and captured. I don’t LOVE Beck, but sometimes I’m in a Beck mood. And this is the version of Beck I like best. Simple and resonant.
Beautiful, lush instrumentation, thoughtful lyrics. Lost a star because it was all just a bit too slow for me to listen to again.

February 12, 2024 HL: “The Golden Age”, “Lonesome Tears”, “Round the Bend”, “Sunday Sun”, “It’s All in Your Mind” Despite the overall bleakness, the Beatlesque and Laurel Canyon touches are more than enough to rescue this from mere sadness n’ gloom. Love the strings in such songs as “Round the Bend”. Beck and Nigel Godrich are a combination I didn’t know I needed to hear.

I’m not really a big fan. This is my second album from Beck on this list. I would say it’s better than the shaggy dog album. Overall not too bad I might listen again. 3/5

None of these songs were notable to me, but I loved how this album was consistent. I did my homework to this and each song had the same feel and gave the same vibe. Beck knew how this album wanted to be and went with it. A really spectacular collection of music.
Beautiful mournful melodies and pensive lyrics paired with western acoustic guitar and lush strings. Beck perfectly encompasses all the angst we collectively felt in the 2000’s, without ever raising his voice. Excuse me, I have to peer out of my bedroom window and wonder if she could possibly love me. Stand out tracks include “The Golden Age”, “Lost Cause”, “Already Dead”, and “Side of the Road”.
A signature languid Beck album - Beck does everything done in this album better in his subsequent album Morning Phase. I give this 3.5 and round down to 3 given Morning Phase would be a solid 4.
Forgot how much I used to listen and like this album. Only critique is it could use some more variety.

So sad and melancholy...I guess he was sad as he wrote with despair...it comes across in the sound....but interesting mix of sorrow and pain with some good instrumentals. Never really listened to him before..will check out other albums.
Did you ever notice how Beck and Michael Cera look alike? I like it when Beck is in a better headspace. I wouldn't consider this album his best work, but I like him already so it was interesting to hear something unknown. Moments of honesty and joy but a bit one-note for me - there is something about Beck's voice I just can't warm to!

Wow. I am simply floored by this album. This is singer/songwriter Beck after the breakup of a nine-year relationship with his gf and it shows. No samples. Real musicians. It’s one of the most mournful, introspective and elegiac albums I’ve ever heard and I loved every single note of it: his voice, the lyrics and the melodies. Stunningly sad/beautiful. That all said, it is not for everyone. This kind of music is right up my alley though.
This record is kinda pretty but mostly sad and boring. I generally dig sad, but not when it’s boring. “Paper Tigers” is a cool track, though. I believe that was the single.

Multi layered beauty. I can pick out many similarities to other artists I love - all in each track. All while sounding unique. A genius album.
Mellow, introspective album from Beck -- almost like he'd been listening to a lot of Ryan Adams before he wrote it. Cool melodies and well-written lyrics really evoke the sense of loss and heartbreak. I liked this record quite a bit -- it's very different from the Beck of Odelay -- but it's a little too relentlessly down tempo, which makes the songs kind of blend together. Lost Cause sticks out as a solid song but the rest of the record is more of one solid mood rather than individual tunes that are memorable on their own.
I've never really paid any attention to Beck so this is new to me. I was half expecting to hate this album, but I did not! Paper Tiger almost made me bail because it started by throwing some Lou Reed vibes (not really my bag) but it turned out to be maybe my favorite track on the whole record. My only knock is that by the halfway mark I really wasn't sure how many different tracks I had heard primarily because they're pretty repetitive. I'll give it 3.5 stars for being a pleasant listen but I'm rounding down to 3 because its just too long. I don't think we needed 52 minutes of what essentially sounds like the same idea again and again.

Solid album from Beck. Very different from his others that came before. You can tell he was going through some shit on this album as it is very palpable. Don't listen to this album if you're feeling good as it is likely a definite mood changer.
Maybe I was in the right way today. Maybe I was expecting something different. I certainly wasn't expecting so many slow, introspective, and depressing songs.
Have to say, the cover makes him look like a wannabee Bowie Aladdin Sane. Decent Music. Never was much of a Beck enthusiast, but I like this alright... I'd give it 3.5, but only 3 because I have no Halves
Pretty mopey. Or occasionally pretty and completely mopey. The arrangement on "It's All In Your Mind" is a treat but the rest of the record is too moody for my taste.
I hadn't heard this whole album before, just a song or two. It's an easy listen, really good for a rainy or mellow day, and it's got some vague Pink Floyd vibes. It wasn't super memorable for me, but I'd put it on in the background and not be unhappy it was on!
Damn, I really enjoyed this but it also made me feel pretty depressed. If your goal for listeners was to bring us in on the breakup pain you were feeling at the time, Beck...mission accomplished. lol The melancholy across the span of Sea Change is palpable -- it's as if Nick Drake is being channeled by Beck here. The first part of the album is a bit better than the second IMO, but I enjoyed this listen and it made me appreciate Beck's musicianship even more. Standouts: The Golden Age, Paper Tiger, Guess I'm Doing Fine, Lost Cause, Already Dead, Sunday Sun

Enjoyed: the golden age I have mixed feelings about Beck's "lazy" vocals usually. I enjoyed the instrumentals in this album and the vocals in a lot of the tracks. A nice melancholy album, would listen again. 4*

I have not heard this album or artist before. It wasn’t a bad album, just didn’t really do anything for me. Most of the songs sounded similar so there was none that stood out to me. I feel like I could give this album another chance though.
Had to turn it off before I got too depressed.
I had no idea that Beck could make an album like this. It completely escaped me! I really like a lot of his stuff, very quirky and creative. The opener of this was brilliant - took me completely by surprise. Track 2 had fantastic orchestration and arrangements, and then track 3 had the right amount of country and western slide guitar action for it not to be vomit inducing country and western. I could play those first 3 tracks on repeat - just great. The rest of the album didn’t quite hit those heights but as with all Beck’s stuff it was a really interesting listen. The quirkyness dialled down and replaced with awesome melancholy and melody. If The Doris ever leaves me, I’ll reach for this album - it would be perfect. Not that I want to be heartbroken of course, but this might, just might, make it worthwhile 🤣. A solid 4 rating - maybe will grow into a 5 with more listens.
I wasn't looking forward to this when i read the write-up, it didn't sound like something I'd enjoy for some odd reason. Well, holy crap, this is good! I knew his albums 'Mellow Gold' and 'Odelay', but this is so different compared to those, also completely on another level. Loving the melancholic feel to all these songs, he can certainly write a miserable ballad when he wants too, so he does a whole album full of heartbroken sadness. It seems heartbreak can inspire greatness, it's almost up there with Spiritualized's LAGWAFIS in inspiration. I'm only on track 4 and its getting a low 5. Update: My god, I've been blown completely away by this. I keep expecting a right duffer of a track to turn up, but no, there wasn't a single one. It's a super depressing album, not like Joy Division's life ending nihilism or The Cure at their most miserable or angry gloominess, but a beautiful introspective sadness. I feel his pain. It's a straight up high 5.

Slower but very emotional. Some great dynamic sounds and cool buildups keep most of the songs interesting.
The production on this album is great, and I see why it's on the list. However, songs blend together too much/sound too similar for me to give 5 stars. 4/5

A very Beck album. Not as dark and intense as Mutations but playful and thoughtful. You just cannot escape the Serge Gainsbourg reference and musical soundscape on paper tiger. This is a great listen.

Although I know Beck has a long discography, I kind of dismissed him as a One hit wonder after hearing Loser 400 million times in college. I really enjoyed this reintroduction. A bit country tinged, very chill. I will def listed more. Love Lost Cause

This is my third Beck album, and I have disliked the two previous. This, however, is beautiful. The noise experimentation works like a charm, surrounding a gifted singer-songwriter.

This album is such a mood. While I enjoy Beck’s more eclectic, lively, energetic albums (Odelay, Colors), the melancholy that pervades this album feels so distinct. Featuring some of his best songs—“Lost Cause,” “Guess I’m Doing Fine,” “Lonesome Tears”—the album is lush, beautiful, and heartbreaking. It’s one that I can have on in the background or can listen to intently and enjoy equally. Great lyrical and melodic writing throughout. If I have any criticism, it’s that the album is so consistent, the songs veer into the territory of all sounding the same. Nonetheless, I love this album and think it deserves the 5 stars.

Man… Anyone who says that Elliott Smith is too depressing (which I think people only say because he committed suicide) has clearly never heard this album. I’ve often felt that Beck is one of the very few musicians/bands that I’ve consistently liked throughout my life, regardless of what else I’m into at any given time. Anyway, this is really good. I appreciate it for what it is, which is Beck’s first real attempt at an album without a bunch of dancey sample-ridden tracks. “Lost Cause” has long been one of my favorites of his. So I want to give this a 5 but I don’t know if I can handle this again in one listen. It’s devastating. Like Blood on the Tracks it’s probably one of the best breakup albums. But unlike BotT, it’s not going to go in regular rotation.

I have absolutely fallen in love with this album. It's so dreamy and easy to get lost in all the diverse sounds, as well as the incredible mellow vocal performances from Beck himself. Definitely one I will be keeping in consistent rotation from now on.

I always liked Beck's voice. It's got a nice quality that really shows on this album. And it's good to see an artist like this that doesn't just make the same record over and over again. And while this one doesn't have some of the grit that his earlier records do, I think it holds up very well. Arrangements are good, vocals are great, production is top notch. Lost Cause has always been one of my favorite songs of his. I also really like The Golden Age, End of the Day, Already Dead, and Sunday Sun. A super chill album to throw on and enjoy a cocktail in the evening. I think this is one that gives a better experience listening to it as a whole rather than just a random song here and there.
Opening with such a sad song, the headphones were such a help to the different sounds in my ears. Definitely loved this, especially the last lyric, excepted more of badass songs, but this is much better. He's quite depressed after that breakup, and now me too. He apparently has an addiction, made a Bowie reference, would listen to this 100% when I'm feeling rock-sad. 9 YEAR OLD RELATIONSHIP, not surprised this is sooo melancholic. In the third song his senses are dulled because of the breakup(metaphorically obvi). And he's been missing opportunities because of the relationship, but I guess he's still young and has time to recover at least. Album has the same vibe, I suppose, quite depressing to sum it up. 4th song has a different chorus apparently, can't wait to hear it. Started with a violin, great. He was raised in a cult and is Searching for some kind of ruin to save himself from the sadness as I got it. Also the chorus had the slight change in the use of the violins, but still one of the best one I've heard from him, because its progressive. Last part is fully instrumental, which is, for me, satisfying. it has a Beatles like ending, weird and unexpectedly iykyk. 5th one is apparently the catchiest(can't agree). It sure is "fun" but I've listened to better ones. He has some kind of ironic comments about the breakup and it low key makes the song less depressing but also more like that so idk. He's had breakups before but this one really hurt him and he's just stuck, even if he says he's over it, he's not, but he knows he has power to move on(?) I guesss. The guitar part remembers me of devil wears Prada theme song. He just wanted to be her good friend, well he's through it now(I hope). It was a short and literal meaning song, nothing catchy or classically soo not as special as the next one(I'm getting spooky vibes already) Apparently 8th song has a nick drake vibe(dunno about him yet). His voice has changed, warmer and more seductive as I've read, agreed. He's almost ready to move on, also he makes an observation about ppl being cruel to eachother. 7th song was quite short compared to this 5 minute songs actually. Nvm 9th one is shorter. I guess he moved on(not fully) because "already dead to me now" suggests that, otherwise the song was not a special as the other ones, made me feel more bored than sad. 10th song is quite happier, because of the last mentioned lyrics I suppose. I mean this one is a special one, but not amusing, but the little piano track is. Actually this song turned out to be one of the best for me, it really says indie rock in this one. 11th song's chorus is quite rocky, loved that, other than that the bridge was a perfect continuation of the chorus, the verses weren't as much of a "wow" to me. I must say his voice is very satisfying and soothing to listen to, almost makes me sleep, while being low-key seductive as I've already said.

Very melancholic, chill, in some parts sad and a slow album. It drags on a bit here and there, but overall it is a good album, though not his best.

Track 1: cool acoustic progression. Track 2: okay not my favorite song. Track 3: once again okay but not amazing. Track 4: cool string part to end it. Kinda like a day in the life. Track 5: meh Track 6: I like the instruments used Track 7: once again slow and okay Track 8: I like the tension in the beginning Track 9: again meh and okay Track 10: like the progression Track 11: once again it was okay Track 12: just like the rest of the album, some good acoustic moments but very slow. Overall: 4/10 very slow and honestly not my favorite. There’s some cool parts but it’s really not my favorite and nothing sticks out much. Kinda just a listen if I want background noise album.
I liked Beck’s earlier albums a lot. I bought this when it was released and was disappointed by its straightforwardness and slowness so didn’t listen to it much as an album. I like a few of the songs when they come up in a shuffle but most are still skips. Listening to it as an album again now - it’s still a chore.
I enjoyed this more than expected. Perfect for a quiet day with a cozy blanket & a good book. Maybe some rain.

This was alright, sad Beck isn't what I was expected. Reminded me a bit of the more recent Failure records, which just made me wish I was listening to Failure.

Beck is one of those artists who fly under radar for me. He has some truly great music that seems to be mostly underrated. He's so creative and unique. First time listening to this album from front to back, it was pretty solid while being melancholy and overall depressing, which is kind of my jam if I'm being honest. I should listen to Beck more often. Lost Cause is my favorite track.
While I don't listen to Beck that much, this album shows this talent of a man Ed Sheeran wants to be. Beck really brings everything together here with great musical ideas and without any rap stuff but rather obscure piano chords here and there. I love it!

I really enjoyed this album, despite it having many qualities that I have disparaged other albums for on this list. I think Beck is a good songwriter and his skills are showcased here on a project that isn’t overflowing with canned drum beats. Almost got George Harrison vibes, though not quite. 8/10
I cannot believe I loved it that much. I've always recognized this album cover, but I wasn't that interested in Beck at age 6. Now, though? Hell yes.

Going into this album, I was excited as I quite like Beck. However, my excitement quickly wained as this album is quite depressing.
A huge and welcome departure from his earlier albums. Melancholy provides a beautiful counterpoint to the party music he's known for.

A bit flat
From memory alone I'd have said this album has some sublime moments (Lost Cause) and some exquisite string arrangements (Paper Tiger, the ever-ascending coda of Lonesome Tears), but doesn't sustain that quality and becomes kinda dull by the end. Still mostly true, but listening again on a frosty morning I realised there are some great tracks on the second half too (particularly Sunday Sun and Little One), and at any rate the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The forlorn and languid but vaguely ominous tone of these songs is strangely hypnotising. 3.5 / 4

This album is simply incontrovertible proof that Beck is not for me. I'm quite literally going through a breakup right now, and this album is still boring the life out of me. The only songs that moved me even a little bit were Lonesome Tears and Sunday Sun. Everything else felt like a stereotypical sad singer sitting on a stool.

i’m a beck fan, a beck stan even… i love this album he really hit his peak for a long time !! i don’t really care for his most recent stuff but Sea Change, it’s a classic, it’s fitting of it’s time and even surpasses what so many other people were putting out in 2002. there’s a lot of different vibes created in this album, the spooky indie experimental that has followed him since his beginning is most apparent in “lonesome tears” and feels like the most beck song of this album. “Guess i’m doing fine” is my fav song on the album, it reminds me of driving with my mom, as does “already dead”! CUTE! i also love “round the bend” it’s very porcupine tree/steven wilson vibes!! What the Beck is up with this huh? Idk what it is but Beck just ain’t my jam, it’s good and some of these songs are especiallly lovely like Guess I’m doing Fine but there’s something about his stuff that doesn’t pull me. Good stuff though mr beck it sounds nice for sure
What an amazing twist in Beck's journey. I have always thought his lyrics were his weak point and the creative musical structures carried things and here he strips everything down and it would interesting were it mediocre but he makes a beautifully realized album and doesn't rely on his strengths. Its a marvel. I bought this album on the day my daughter was due.. it had just come out... We played it on repeat when my wife was in labor at the hopsital so it will always bring up a slew of emotions for me.
I have specific memories of this album with a specific ex. It sounds like Beck did, too. Melancholy isn’t my favourite Beck flavour but he does it really well.
Ehhh. Loser was great and probably untoppable. This doesn’t feel essential to me. Not awful. Not bad. Just not … ehhh ….
Thrown by this Beck. What drug gets a musician this mellow, yet still able to sing and strum? (hang on, I'm thinking of something - ah yes, ah, maybe I finally understand = Fairport Convention is what frustrated British people listen to when they have taken a weeks worth of hash, muscle relaxants and codeine at once. (when putting off that trimming of the thatched roof ). And this would go well next to that section called "slightly turgid" or "chill-out for over 70s" sections music in an LP collection. Masterfully slo' mo'. Instead of Sea Change, he could just have been less euphemistic and just called it "retirement" :+|
You cannot pigeon-hole Beck. I have this cd but haven’t played it in years. It’s great. The sound superb. It creates such atmosphere for him to perform in. His voice terrific - a bit Nick Drake, but always perfect, and never always the same. The melodies are sometimes stunning. He’s singer-songwriting a lot. But he’s so good at everything. Lonesome Tears is great.The Cobainish Little One is a real winner. Bt there are no bad songs here. This is such a pleasure to enjoy.
I saw Beck at the Metro in Sydney in 1994. A friend had seen the tour a few days earlier in Canberra and said I _had_ to go, to see the support act; the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. So I went, and JSBX were incredible, as advertised. But I was surprised by Beck. I had been expecting a guy out of his depth, with a guitar and backing tapes to half-arse his recent hit single and some stuff that sounded like that. But he trotted out on stage with a tight and surprisingly muscular band, and they bashed out an energetic and raucous set of rock and roll. I was sold. I bought a few of his records over the years. But what the hell is this? Jesus, was Beck sprinkling crushed up mogadon tablets on his cornflakes ? It's very pretty, nice melodies, soaring string arrangements and all, but the melancholy is all-pervading and totally enervating. He is on record as having always wanted to make a "depressing album" like Joni Mitchell or Leonard Cohen (or Dylan or Nick Drake etc etc. BTW, Round The Bend is more than indebted to Nick Drake's River Man. Dude should pay royalties on that). I disagree with the critical shorthand that "sad divorce album = masterpiece". This is passable in the genre, but no masterpiece. The energy, humour, and creative freshness that I enjoy in Beck at his best is all missing from this album. He usually has a million ideas, quickly thrown on tape, which didn't always stick, but were at least funny and fresh and exciting. Good tunes, well recorded and played, but not Beck playing to his strengths.
I love this mans music, however not one of his best! Didn't have the otherworldlyness of mutations or the downright strangness of midnight vultures. Still was enjoyable just not usual genius standard, lacked ness.
Much as I like Beck, I think I prefer happier Beck. An hour of sad Beck doesn't stack up well against Odelay.
I bit too melancholic. I cannot relate to his dry desert winds. He should write more songs about grey dull skies and interminable rain.

I really liked this - never heard it before - sounds like Scott walker who I love. Probably one of my favourites so far
I like Beck but there are so many of his albums I haven't listened to. This one is mature and manages to sound pared-back and lush at the same time. He is a talented songwriter and performer - love the vocal melodies and sometimes wonky, multi-layered acoustic guitar parts the most.

I apreciate the soft rock style and the album was apparently inspired by his breakup with his girlfirend so the thems on the album are very sad and more depressing. But none of the song really strike me ig is not for me but its still good.

Enjoyable solo singer songwriter stuff with a guitar. The slow ballads are convincing with a slight country vibe. The entire album is low-energy, which I didn't love, but he hits what he's going for. This is perfect music for an afternoon bike ride in the summer.

I listened to 3 songs on this and it was incredibly boring. I couldn't stand it. On an note that doesn't affect my thoughts on the album, I thought for a second the album cover had Micheal Cera on it. Nope, he and Beck just look very similar. 1/5

J'ai trouvé que ça s'écoutait bien, j'ai clairement mieux aimé que Odelay. Je ne m'attendais pas du tout à ce style beaucoup plus doux et acoustique, mais c'est très bien exécuté. J'ai l'impression que c'est le genre d'album qui pourrait plus me plaire à l'écouter. Par contre, j'ai trouvé que par moment ça sonnait beaucoup trop comme du Nick Drake. 7/10
Not my fave Beck album but I appreciate it
Catch me in the right mood and this album is awesome. It's a little slow and melancholy for everyday consumption. I'm a sucker for steel guitar, and this album has it, so that's a plus. Vocally and lyrically Beck shows why he's held in high regard on this album.
I listened to a lot of Beck's Guero album in my 20s but I have never listened most of Beck's other music. He sounds pretty sad in this one. It's not offensive, just forgettable. Review of Reviews: Yeah he sad. People seem pretty split on this one, too. Best Track: Lost Cause
"Tires to clinically dead" vocals are not my thing.
2 Just not my type of music (or maybe I wasn't in the right state or mood). This music could be played in a cafe in the background, but that's not something I would sit down and carefully and mindfully listen to. Although there were maybe 1-2 songs which were actually good.

Wow, what an amazing album. I love all the different tones here. I know that he wrote this in reflection of the break-up of his girlfriend. But even so, there is a lot going on here. Once I heard "Lonesome Tears," which I thought was a cover at first, I knew I was in for a ride. This is the second album of his, after "Odelay" which begs for another listen. I am quickly becoming a big fan of his.
Beck does a good job of playing sad and mellow. Reminds me a bit of Leonard Cohen or some of the other folksy artists of the 70's. Lyrics aren't as excellent, but still good. And so, is this album on the 1,001 list because it represents a departure from Beck's normal style? I don't know, that feels like a reach. I didn't mind it, and it gave me a greater appreciation for Beck's skills (even though I respected him already). But it's an average album at best.

As with a lot of Beck's output, I suspect this is a grower, but even on the first playthrough I can that this is a great record. The string arrangements are gorgeous. Favourite tracks: Paper Tiger, Guess I'm Doing Fine, Little One.
This album hit me like a ton of bricks. I'd never really listened to Beck before, and the album art (which looks like it could've been done in photoshop in about 5 minutes) didn't give me high hopes for the album itself. But I've been going through a melancholic phase and this was exactly what I needed to reflect on that and get through it. It's the rare album that shows up for you exactly when you need it. The album itself is filled with that bittersweet sensation - joy, sadness, melancholy, it's all there in Beck's voice, the melodies, and the quiet background. To me it captures the feeling of a lonely sunset drive. It's exactly what you need to reflect and get through a moment, and that to me is ultimately what a great album can capture. A good album has great tracks that you love to listen to, and is maybe full of them. A great album transcends that, capturing a feeling, an experience, perhaps even taking through a series of emotions and is something you turn to when you need to move through those, for whatever reason. This is that, and I would contend is one of the best albums on this list as a result. A true masterpiece.
I felt like it needed a couple change of pace songs mixed in.

Good soundscape but it's like 3 songs too long
1. The Golden Age - i don't mind the lyrics in this one and the sound is ok. 2. Paper Tiger - i like the sound of this one, it's a little darker sounding to me, almost grungy. 3. Guess I’m Doing Fine - this one is ok, not my favourite. 4. Lonesome Tears - I really like the sound of this one, and the lyrics are good 5. Lost Cause - this one was a little boring. 6. End of the Day - ditto 7. It’s All in Your Mind - interesting lyrics. 8. Round the Bend - a little boring too. 9. Already Dead - i like the music in this one. 10. Sunday Sun - didn't like the sound of this one. 11. Little One - i really like the sound of this one, it's pretty upbeat. 12. Side of the Road - kinda sounded similar to the others I didn't mind the album, acoustic songs aren't my favourite unless I really love the lyrics which they did not connect for me. His vocal tones kinda remind me of grunge a bit

Stone cold banger. Slaps from beginning to end. Often overshadowed by funkier/bigger albums by Beck, Sea Change is exactly that. It's so good they gave him a make-up grammy a decade later for a lesser album
Definitely an album you have to be in the mood to listen to....which I wasn't when I played it. Definitely a brilliant album, which actually reminded me of Pink Floyd - I just wasn't it the right maudlin mood.

I don't know why, but I initially thought this was going to be terrible. Why do I have a bad impression of Beck, despite not knowing a single song he has done? Do I have him confused with someone else? Anyway, wow. What a nice surprise. Great voice, few skippable tracks, but mostly solid ones with a few gems in there. How have I never heard him before??
I love Serge Gainsbourg. On this showing, I doubt Serge would love Beck though, unless he is somehow getting royalties for the tunes 'pastiched' here.
I wasn't expecting this - a break-up country rock album. It wasn't exactly the Friday I'm in Love start to the weekend that was needed. The Nigel Godrich influence comes over strong. This could be an outtake of Radiohead songs sung by smiling Thom's US cousin. It's high quality, just not the type of quality that I need these days.

Good stuff. I remember when 2014’s Morning Phase came out I listened to it three or four times thinking “hey Beck’s really good” and I should go back and listen to some other stuff. Of course, squirrels and other shiny things, I never did. So I’m glad this album came up in the rotation.
Nigel Godrich can produce that's for sure. I think I prefer Beck's less folksy stuff. This gets a bit too mopey for me but at the same time doesn't move me emotionally. The tempo seemed to stay the same for a lot of this album + makes me feel like I was just plodding along. I'm a bit of a sucker for a pedal steel guitar in a not-quite 100% conventional country song setting, so I really enjoyed it's consistent presence throughout. Favs: Paper Tiger, Lonesome Tears, Round The Bend (I really love the strings on these); Little One (grungey); Side Of The Road (bluesy)
Quite the slow and steady album, and such a sea change from Midnite Vultures (my favorite Beck album)
Decent enough work from an artist I’ve never found particularly riveting, and that didn’t change here.
Like most of Beck's catalogue, it's pleasant enough to listen to, but nothing I'd normally seek out. A bit more accessible than his later stuff. "Lost Cause" the highlight for me.
