Few good songs and dig the mellow vibes in general.
Nice for a subdued listen. The first half of the album was stronger than the second half
I've not heard much Beck other than the really popular songs. It was a pretty chill relaxing album. Not something I'll come back to but still enjoyable. I wouldn't mind this as background music in other settings.
Beck is not within my scope of listening, but I appreciate his musicality, especially instrumentally. At times I found his voice to be drab but there were songs on this album I did overall enjoy.

Not at all what I expected to hear from a Beck album. This is so personal it feels almost embarrassing to listen to, almost voyeuristic. Because Beck emerged at a time when I went through a very difficult time emotionally I tend to connect his music to those memories even though there is nothing realistic about that. Here I find him living through and expressing the pain and loss I had and it’s almost comforting. I really wish I had had these songs then.

I've always wanted to like Beck more than I do. This album has some nice semi-psychedelic moments and plenty of lovely melodies but it never quite hits as I think it should.

Picture Odelay coming out in peak high school days. It goes on repeat ad infinitum. Know every word. Love it. College sophomore home for the summer buys this album. Broke college ass: "I just paid $21.99 for this shit?!" I listened through it once and only once. I hated it. Now it's 20 years later. How does it stack up? I'm much more receptive to this kind of an album now and I can def. see why I felt that way back then. Shit, part of me still agrees, however there is a lot more to appreciate on here than I ever did before. Paper Tiger is excellent. Lost Cause is very very good. So is Sunday Sun. This is worth more listens, but it will never stack up with the nostalgia of his early stuff for me, despite how much I can appreciate a lot more of it now.

A real sombre album from Beck, with themes including loneliness, heartbreak and desolation, it proved a turning point for Beck musically. Going from a highly experimental musician to a much more emotionally charged view - both lyrically and sonically. It was an easy listen, however it was pretty mood deflating. This one I've heard before. Didn't like it in 2002, not a fan now. When am I supposed to listen to this? As in, it ain't fun. Depressed, soft songs. Not bad at all, just not dynamic in most any way. Would avoid a purchase. But it is... okay. Better Beck albums before this one. Not sure if there are any after this.
A decent album with some good moments but altogether not that memorable.

Not a huge fan of Beck, this album was decent and had a nice calming atmosphere but just wasn't my bag.
I enjoyed this one. Beck's one of those artists that's been around for a while now, just doing whatever it is he does. Not someone I've ever found or listened to organically, but based on recommendations or accolades only. A bit of an enigma in that way, I don't understand him. But this was a cool album. He was doing something of an Eddie Vedder type voice on this, and I don't think that's how he always sounds, but I'm no Beckspert. Favorite tracks: Paper Tiger, Lost Cause, Round the Bend, Side of the Road. Album art: Looks like that picture of Halsey. It also feels much newer than it actually is. Based on looks alone I would've guessed like 2014. 3.5/5

To mellow
A good album, just not a great one. Beck has always been a chameleon and some of his musical dalliances have been amazing. He is at his weakest when he does the folky thing which is where he got his start. It is refreshing to see him not lean into the weird vibe of previous outings which he could have easily done. If only the material was as strong as his earlier stuff

An interesting and depressing album.
Though more highly rated by many, this isn't even in my top 3 favorite Beck albums. But it's damn good. I'm trying to figure out why it's not one of my favorites, and it might be because I've never had a world-weary heartbreaking depression. But though I've not shared his experience, even I am moved by the brutal resignation of the album's centerpiece, "Lost Cause". It's a devastating meditation on what's left behind when the love of your life has rejected you. I cannot imagine how subhuman one would feel in that situation.
Monotone enough to read a book through.
Better than his sample work which I really don’t enjoy. This album has no greatness, but it wasn’t bad at all. Nice guitar parts and melody. His voice reminded me a little of the great grunge singers of the 90s.
Not sure why this album is groundbreaking enough to be on the list but asides from that, its certainly not bad, just also nothing remarkable either. No highlights make for a long listening
The title says it all. Melancholy and moody. Beck has a knack for songwriting.
The first couple of tracks sound like Beck half-ass emulating more-interesting country songs of the past, but by the time the album ended, I was a believer. It is uneven at times, some parts clearly more inspired than others, but a good record nonetheless.
First time listening to Beck and this was the perfect album to start with. Despite it being one of his most personal albums, I enjoyed the variety of styles Beck used on this album. He might not be an artist I will listen to often but definitely made an impression on me. Stand Out Songs: Lonesome Tears, Little One
A little melancholy for Shannah’s taste but nice in the background. Bill finds it nice and melancholy, good for the background. Conor found the background to be nicely melancholy. (2.7/5)
Good background music. Did not make me melancholy. I believe it was the sound of the colour of saudade, which is orangey blue. Would listen again.
Slow Beck. Sad Beck. Okay Beck.
I like Beck but this isn't my favorite album by him. It's not bad but any means by I prefer when he's genre hopping and more lively. It's not bad for "sadboy" music but I have other go-to stuff when I want to be morose.

The sort of artist I would expect to like, in that he's heavily influenced by folk country and the Blues. Maybe I would like it more if I listened to it more. Will look out for his other stuff.

Genre: Folk Rock 3/5 Beck made something nice and pretty here. Not earth shattering by any stretch, but sleak production, good songwriting, and some nice moody arrangments sold this thing pretty well. I'm not quite sure why it's in this book, it is good, but I don't see it as any thing but a continuation of pop rock of the early 2000s. It does say Beck on it, though. First half was super strong, I really enjoyed Paper Tiger, but it all sort of blended into one as it went along. No real sense of urgency, and nothing too much in the way of challening the form. But a well-made album, overall.

Sorry Beck, I understand you got really into folk music but it doesn't do it for me. Knowing this is a breakup album does give some weight to the emotions expressed, but the album itself never feels like it goes much of anywhere
A lot to like but I've listened to this enough over the years to know I'm never going to be heavily invested in it
Many of these songs, like the ones on the previous two albums, are fairly predictable, but elsewhere Beck uses elegant arrangements to enhance the emotion hidden in the lyrics and to downplay the simplicity of his delivery. (6/10) FT: Lost Cause, Golden Age

Primer disco que escucho de Beck de principio a fin. Un disco muy distinto a lo que tenía escuchado. Entiendo que la música y las letras tienen que ver con un estado emocional que transitaba el artista pero que me he perdido por no tener el suficiente nivel de inglés para disfrutarlo en una escucha.
Not my fave beck
I love this stage of Beck's progression. Looking back through his discography, I fee like I notice more and more of the sounds developing that you hear in Guero. This is one of his sadder feeling albums to me, little slow for a Monday morning.

Sea Change is not of of my preferred Beck albums. After listening to it once again for this list, I must admit it is still a solid piece of music. It's sort of a back to the basics idea with simpler lyrics and real instruments and less electronics/sampling. It is lacking a real classic song though.
Nice acoustics and composition. Often hard to distinguish songs from another due to similar pace and tone. Feels like a rainy day blues kind of record and maybe a decent one. Curious to see if Beck has other dimensions. Paper tiger, end of the day, Sonny Sunday, little one

Feels pretty raw listening to this album - the man sounds gutted after his break up. Sunday Sun is amazing. Some neat songwriting here. Three for now could be a four later.
Far from Beck's best, yet a nice and very melodic (and relaxing) album despite the obvious personal crisis that triggered it. Bit too un-exciting for me, but definitely great for certain moods.
Just a lot of the same sad song. A good listen, still. Generally beautiful music with sad and soft (sometimes unintelligible) vocals. A bunch of the songs also did the gimmicky devolve into distortion at the end. A couple of songs had my attention but none were really engaging or memorable.
So Beck is one of those that I never really "got". Sure there was a good single or two but it seems like his music is held in such high regard. I gotta say, this was pretty darn good. Decent variety, not relying on a gimmick or an overused signature sound. 3.5, I can't quite give it a 4 though.

Not sure what to make of this, quite a difficult album. You really need to be in the mood for this, much more melancholy than I was expecting and drags a bit at times but there is a lot to enjoy too and I would revisit. Paper Tiger the pick of the bunch for me - superb track - but some other very good tracks on here too.
Nice, good album. I like the opening track 'Golden Age' and always been a fan of 'Lost Cause'. Like many albums I would suggest there are too many tracks.
It was obviously good production. But just a bit dull on first listen. I’m sure subsequent listens would get under the skin.

Didn't expect this kind of album from Beck. Liked it way more that I thought I would've. The songwriting is my favorite part, really nice arrangements. The acoustic was nice and he really just created an atmosphere. Would definitely listen again. Standout tracks Lost Cause and Already Dead. 6/10

Despite growing up the child of Beck fans I can't say I really got into his music until Morning Phase, which I'd still probably list as one of my top 10 albums of all time. It's not surprising then that my first reaction to putting on this ablum was, "wait this sounds just like Morning Phase." I'm sure I had read they were companions at some point but can't say I ever gave this one a listen. All in all this album has all the guitar goodness and interesting range that makes me love Morning Phase (and generally appreciate Beck). However, knocking points b/c they really do have almost too many similarities with Morning Phase still coming out on top for me. Why put on Sea Change when you can put on Morning Phase?

Half way through first track and all I can think is Radiohead "Fake Plastic Trees" and "No Surprises" combined with a bit of slide guitar. I thought the album was a nice listen, but it felt like background music to me. It's similar to the Springsteen album in that I don't really get the significance of it. It's not his biggest, best or first album, in fact other than some critical acclaim at the time it doesn't seem to have really influenced much at all. It's just because it's a revered artist basically. 6/10

This certainly isn't Beck's strongest album but I think it does it's job well. He was inspired to write this after him and his long time girlfriend split, and boy is this ever a breakup album. Every song is dripping with melancholy. Needed scuba gear as I was swimming through all these Beck tears. I really liked Maddie's comparison of this and Morning Phase as companion albums. To me, Morning Phase always felt like a hopeful ray of sun on your face to wake you up in the morning, and in contrast this album certainly feels more like the sun setting on a lovely day thats come to an abrupt end. I found that the orchestration on this album added some much needed power to his overly earnest songwriting. "Lost Cause," really stood out to me in this regard. It wasn't Beck's most inventive songwriting by any means, and seemed to rely on cliched lines and motifs. This song kind of summed up the rest of the album for me. He sounds hurt but uninspired. I feel that this album was strictly made for Beck to process his feelings and move on with his life. It feels inconsequential in Beck's discography to me but I'm sure to him it was a very important record to make.
The Golden Age is big space cowboy vibes. very much a low key breakup album, nice for zoning out but I didnt really get much out of it

I remember illegally downloading a few of these tracks in high school. Ages back, hence awful quality- was good to listen to in a higher bit rate. Pretty good, some Vedder-ish vocals creep in
Pretty solid throughout, just not something I always vibe with. "Guess I'm doing fine" and "Lost Cause" were standouts to me. Beck's voice sounded way different here than I was used to, and I liked the folk rock and western vibes at times. Better than a 3 for me, but I can't call this one a 4.

Quite a different version of Beck, with this album. It seems more serious, a more somber Beck. Not a bad thing, it shows a more emotional range and an ability to showcase his different side. Not my favorite Beck but he always shows a willingness to explore something different and this is just that : Beck but Different.

I much prefer my sad songs to not be so slow, which I know sounds silly. It was alright. I think the combination of his voice and the slowness of the songs got to me after a bit. Made it feel like it dragged on a bit. I also don’t like that it seems like he’s mumbling a bit. I don’t mind incomprehensible lyrics but this type of singing is not my cup of tea. All that being said, definitely not the worst album.
Liked it a lot, was expecting a lot more wierd stuff. But nope nice smooth album will listen again.

I appear to be in the minority here, but this did very little for me. I found it to be slow, mumbly, and uninteresting. A few somewhat bright spots, but mostly a miss. Sorry. Beck's appeal is a mystery to me.
This whole album sounds kinda mopey. I don't love how the synths sound given the mood of the album, seems a bit incongruous. Overall this album is about as interesting as a bowl of clear jello.

Just as AC/DC is far too heavy for my taste, this album by Beck is far too saccharine. I imagine that if I’d been a teenage girl, I’d have lost myself in the atmosphere the album creates. I can listen to it, mind you. It’s better than AC/DC, but this music isn’t really for me either. I thought ‘Paper Tiger’ was the best track.
This is too sad.
Morose, bland, and completely lacking variation. Beck remains in a single emotional & musical register for the entire album. More sleepy than sad. I didn't want to finish the album because it felt like the same song 12 times, but I did it for the sake of the project.

Efter en relativt kort men intensiv period med som startade på riktigt med Odelay, var Sea change det första Beck-album som inte införskaffades (innan dess hade det hunnit bli såväl singlar som bootlegs). Han intresserade mig helt enkelt inte längre. Hur är det då att lyssna snart 25 år senare? Var det ett korrekt beslut att överge Becken? Svaret är enkelt. Så klart det var rätt beslut. Med Sea changes lämnar Beck allt det där som var kul med hans musik. Samplingarna, groove, experimentlustan. Istället vill han vara Singer-songwriter. En konst han behärskar rätt dåligt. Låtarna är slätstrukna. Sång och arrangemang likaså. Det blir en svag tvåa och så länge inget drastiskt händer kommer Beck post millenieskiftet lysa med sin frånvaro i skivsamlingen.

I remember buying this right before I was about to go off to Iraqi Freedom 1 or whatever you want to call it. I think I listened once or twice but never really got into it. When you are dealing with injured patients in a war the last thing you want to hear is some sad music about losing your girlfriend or whatever. I think today was the first time I listened since then and I want to say the first thing I noticed was how it sounded like Radiohead and not the best parts. And then he was singing sure it was okay I guess. I’m not sure if I ever really liked Beck or the idea of Beck. I mean he can craft a song sometimes but would Odelay have been as good without the Dust Brothers. I guess I’m saying is that sometimes he can write a good tune but it’s not all great.

i bought this on CD (lol) in around 2009/10, didn't like it, returned it to HMV (lol. so old.) the next day. this has got nothing to do with Beck but this morning i found out a fox (i assume it was a fox) had dragged a BAG OF RAW CHICKEN into the bottom of my garden in the night and then left it there wtfffffffff and it was just sitting there rotting in the sun it was SO AWFUL. i listened to this album after having dealt with that and feeling extremely not ok and the best i can say is that the mellowness of this album and the way it basically demanded nothing of me kind of helped me recover from my terrible morning and stop feeling sick and upset. but other than that, 16 years later i'm still not a fan.

Ik weet niet, als ik melancholie luister wil ik geraakt worden tot op het bot, dit kwam niet eens door mijn opperhuid heen. Niet door de woorden en ook niet door de feel van de muziek. Misschien dat ik onwetend ben en blijkt straks dat jullie hier lyrisch om zijn… maar voor mij is dit smaakloze koffie. Dan zet ik liever een plaatje op van Kids With Buns.
Dit is misschien wel het meest trage album die ik ooit heb gehoord. Daardoor voelt het ook alsof het eeuwen duurt. Ik heb opzich best geduld, maar dit duurt me te lang. Misschien is het qua kwaliteit wel goed en het zou ook wel met smaak te maken hebben maar ik vond het niet leuk
Ik was deze week aan het klussen dus mooi even tijd om wat albums in te halen. Zweten, boren, zagen, herrie met een gedumpte jongen op een gitaar met paar viooltjes en cello's. Het is geen klusmuziek en dit werkte niet in het voordeel van Beck. Het is melancholisch en zit wat ironie in maar je raakt wel een beetje zat van het zelfmedelijden. Guess I'm Doing Fine is erg pick me zielig ironisch. Misschien ga ik het later nog een an geven maar heb ook niet veel interessante aanknopingspunten punten gevonden om door te luisteren. Productie is wel erg goed. Wie weet later op een ander moment.

We got David beckie over here. What is this. "heartbreak and desolation, solitude, and loneliness" wow I'm excited to hear this. I'm sure it'll go really well with my mental state at the moment. Ok his voice is kinda springsteenesque. Hmm I don't think I like the vocals. Oh this is so 2000s. He just sounds nonchalant, almost nirvanaesque and I can't help but think the songs would be so much better if he just sang normally. Open the window dude then you'll hear the bluebird. Beck is always an interesting artist. Very good at combining different musical styles like funk, electronic, country and folk. Thus album is a much more chilled out affair. It feels like a fusion between country and smooth jazz. I have to admit that I prefer a more upbeat and fun Beck track. Thats not to say that this isnt good, I just like the other style more. (2.125)

Slow, morose, and lacking the charm that made Beck a 90s alt rock staple. Only Sunday Sun here carries much weight. The rest is pretty dull.
Found it to be very long, repetitive and uninteresting; i'm sure this may be technically impressive, but it's not something i would return to
I'd heard a couple of these in isolation at various points and was pretty excited for this album. Guess I'm Doing Fine and Lost Cause are truly excellent. The rest overstays its welcome quite a bit.

I love the dramatic strings in Lonesome Tears and some of the similar uncanny that pervades the other tracks. Bit moany, groany on the whole though. End of the Day dragged like its namesake on a tough Monday. Round The Bend catalysed my Sunday scaries and almost triggered a psychotic glitch as I listened to it whilst reading about defamiliarisation and dreams in Living Things (I actually just had to skip half way through sorry). Oh gee, Already Dead is another bleak motherfucker. This Becky Boy needed to go to the pub with a few mates on a sunny Saturday and remember life is worth living. Okay, Beck listened and felt life’s rays on Sunday Sun but still got that dystopian gait- lighten up bud. Listening to this album felt like holding a plank. Best of the bunch: Side of the Road
Mycket radiohead inslag. Läste ingen text men var helt ok, lyssnar nog inte igen. Har aldrig hört om Beck trots mycket hits. Spännande!

"Break-up albums" bore me. It's like listening to someone you barely know read their secret diary aloud - it's cringy and uncomfortable, and I don't really care. That being said, it's hard to deny Beck's talent. Although I prefer his early albums, this record is quite well crafted, with nice arrangements and a bittersweet vibe that works fine if you're into that kind of thing. Both the vocal and instrument parts are restrained and sober, and manage to avoid the worst pitfalls of this type of album (like becoming whiny). I also appreciate the subtle grunge influences you can hear in a few songs. However, it's also really slow, long and repetitive. Most songs follow a similar pattern, and the mood doesn't change much over the course of the record. I'm completely all right with 3-4 songs, but a whole album of this was just too much for me ; there's only so much "sweet & sad" I can take in one sitting. In the end, it all felt a bit pointless and forgettable. I didn't actively dislike it, but I also didn't vibe with it, and I'm pretty sure I will never play this again. 4/10
nice ballads, nothing fancy though apart from the samples of Melody Nelson (or rearrangement) on the second track, Papaer Tiger.
This one bored me pretty hard. Nice background music to work to on a rainy day, but definitely not the Beck I’m into. Too mellow, not enough weirdness. It just floats by without really leaving a mark on me.

Beck has like one good song and it’s not on this album. Few bits I found enjoyable but mostly a bit disinterested
Some really pretty songs, maybe his best stuff to my ears. I still can't warm up to that disaffected delivery though. It kind of suits the material here but it's the same delivery on every album and loses all it's effect in this setting.
Easy listening great guitar riffs
1996 me became very tired of Odelay, and I do not care to hear about two turntables and a microphone ever again. Oh....Odelay is on this list too. Ugh. Anyways. This album surprised me. I only really liked one song (Paper Tiger), but overall I was not immediately irritated like I expected to be. There were a few other songs where I liked bits and pieces, but I realized I just don't really like his singing style. The production on this album is quite good, though.
As much as I like Beck I just don’t enjoy these types of albums from him.
This sounds like drinking yourself to death. I appreciate the layered composition, but the songs feel like nothing. Like eating a well baked wafer, but depressedly.
