Reviews (page 9 of 14)
I really did not care for the radio hits from this album at the time. Rehab was so annoying to me when it came out. The production on this album is really interesting. It has a fuzzy feel to it which makes it sound like a lower quality recording which makes it feel older. I'm sure that was intentional and I'm not sure how I feel about it. The audiophiles online seem upset by it calling it "unlistenable". I don't mind it too much but I do think with her voice, it would have been better to have a cleaner sound. Overall this is a great album. It's a shame Amy Winehouse died so young.
What a rad album. It's a bonafide blues and jazz record. Really instrumentation, cool brass, bass lines and keys. She also kind of experiments with some ska and dancehall elements. But really, its Amy's voice that ties it all together and brings the heat. Did Adele market correct her after she died? Did Amy Winehouse die so Adele could run? Her voice really hits all ranges of emotion from sadness and pain, to joy and laughter. This album is really varied in that nature. Its fun, but never overly poppy. I really enjoyed. I wish there were more artists that were doing this kind of music today.
Dark poppy fun
Good blend of older and newer styles. My favourite would be Tears Dry On Their Own. I didn't used to like her very much. It turned out I had to get used to her voice. It's quite distinct.
I used to kinda dislike her due to only knowing 'Rehab', drug addiction and stuff but wow this album really changed my mind. Gone too soon RIP. High 4
Even with how long this list is, there can only be so many artists. Especially since so many of these have multiple noteworthy albums. But I still regularly take issue with some of the choices they made. But Amy Winehouse is an artist who I will fully get behind. She only got the chance to release two full length albums. Both of which deserve a place on this list. The more people that can be educated on this incredible woman’s career, the better. I thought Frank was a solid album. Maybe a little dated, but still worthwhile. The fusion between trip-hop elements and soul that they created for that record was cool to hear. But the former element was entirely abandoned for this follow-up. Instead, they fully embraced all of the soul and pop stuff. And it’s clear right from the start that this was a smart decision. Amy immediately feels right at home. And her voice is every bit as fantastic as it was on the debut. This may also be the first album I’ve heard that was produced by Mark Ronson. Dude has done some really great work, especially on this record. I’ll also mention Salaam Remi, who contributed just as much as Ronson, and did a lot of work with other 2000s artists who were very much inspired by Amy. This album feels the marriage of two time periods in the best way possible. It’s so reminiscent of the 60s, but has a fantastic modern coat of paint. And this is aided by the incredible Dap-Kings backing her. This also contains easily some of Amy’s most dramatic and emotionally open pieces of music she ever wrote, covering some very mature themes. Most of which were inspired by her relationship at the time, and him leaving to pursue his previous partner. Many of these songs are iconic, and they don’t overstay their welcome. It’s a well paced album, and one that everyone should hear. Amy’s story is one that far too many people can relate to, and unfortunately like her, many of them are not here to speak for themselves anymore. But we can continue to honor her legacy by listening to the wonderful art she put out during her short-lived, but stellar career. Rating: 8/10
really enjoyed my time with this one. obviously amy winehouse was a terrific vocalist and she is putting on quite the performance here. i really loved the throwback soul sound that the production employs here - one of the songs even interpolates marvin gaye and tammi terrell's 'ain't no mountain high enough.' for me, i think what keeps this album in the good-not-great territory is the crop of songs here. there are two songs i think i would consider great - 'rehab' and the title track. the rest of the songs are somewhere between fine enough and good. nothing really stands out from the pack. that isn't to say the songs are bad, i just didn't find them interesting enough to bump them up to the great territory.
Favourite Song: You Know I'm No Good
I had never actually gotten around to hearing this album. I had heard the single for decades. I quite enjoyed it and I will keep it in the shuffle
really good
A modern classic.
Was waffling back and forth between my long-standing 4 stars and a high 3.5, but the highlights are too damn good for me to consider changing now. I could probably live with a nice compilation of my favorites between this and Frank, but overall, I just think she was an amazing talent and I wish we could have seen where she'd go from here. 4/5
ill come running through the suits, the empty elevators, concrete portraits and tarmac carpets, through the meaninglessness, empty utterance and growing ambivalence, loneliness and resin pit homegrown masks, ill come running til my legs turn to weakness
wonderful album, had never heard it before now.
Really lovely from start to finish. Such a shame that the world lost out on more music from Amy.
This is a far, far better Winehouse album than her first. She's more confident, and although Mark Ronson is all over the sound like a rash, she seems more comfortable with what he has to say.
Amy was a fantastic talent, enjoyed this — but not absolute top tier songwriting or poetry for me. Stylish as, though.
Love this album. Was so devastated when she passed away, I already had the tickets to see her at a festival
This album rules. Love the entire vibe of it. It loses a bit of steam at the end, and it's not the most dynamic (as plenty of songs sound like others). But it's so good, man.
Great album
Beautiful, love her voice. Too bad her addiction and POS dad cut her short.
Love this record. Everything about it , her voice, the music , the sounds. Classic record. Back to black is a classic track
she did something, she did a sound but not mine
Really solid! Enjoyed this the whole way through. Not sure how often I’ll go back to it, but she was a legend for a reason.
Excellent. Best tracks are Rehab, Tears Dry On Their Own, Back To Black and You Know I’m No Good, but the rest of the album is great too 4/5
Nice
Felt repetitive but overall very good. Rehab is not my favorite but it’s very catchy so I think it lores the audience into the rest of the album which I ultimately find to be a lot better
Meghan Trainor music if it was good
Loved the first disc, not so much the second.
Nice
I don't have much to add to the review currently topping this section (as of June 2024). This is not a *perfect* album, but the peaks on it (exactly half of the tracklist: "Rehab", "You Know I"m No Good", "Back In Black", "Tears Dry On Their Own", and "He Can Only Hold Her"--plus bonus track "Addicted") make it worth the price of admission. And if the rest is slighly less impressive (more by-the-book reenactments of old soul / classic rhythm'n'blues shenanigans, with a tinge of Jamaican music sometimes), it's still enjoyable overall. Add the iconic figure that Amy Winehouse was, plus her idiosyncratic lyrics and phrasing, and surely, you have an "essential album". 2006 didn't have a lot to offer when it came to up-and-coming artists. Without Amy, it would not have been the same 4/5 for the purposes of this list. 9/10 for more general purposes (5+4). Number of albums left to review: 149 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 367 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 216 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 272
Das ist ein Klassiker grandiose Stimme, der man alles abnimmt.
minder mig om min mor hehe. nostalgisk. 90% på grund af gode minder fra at høre det i vores gamle bil og stue, at dette får 4/5 <3
Blurred snapshots from a slow-motion train wreck. Listening today, in a far different musical landscape than 2006, the freshness of the approach and genre is not so readily apparent, but that makes the pain from which the music emerged more immediate. The well known hits still play well and the lesser known title track shines when put into it's context. The overall derivative approach, simply borrowing riffs, hooks and melodies from older music, is also more in your face when you hear all the songs together. Some of the music feels like you walked into a set halfway through a song and then wandered back out, with things feeling slightly incomplete. Overall, knowing that she would die just a few years later, the album hits slightly different.
Unique style and talent …. Would’ve liked to see a catalog of 20 albums over a full career ….
After listening to Back To Black, I can absolutely say it was nothing like what i was expecting. I was expecting a more pop oriented album since that's the kind of vibe Amy Winehouse gave me (prior to seriously listening to any of her music) but it ended up being a more jazzy soul like album and honestly, i think its great for that. The songs here sounded pretty dark at points but managed to stay catchy and fun and also had Amy do some really good singing. The album was also the perfect length, long enough to sink in but not so long that it becomes tedious. This is definitely a great album. Best Song: Back To Black Worst Song: Rehab
Definitely a nice record. I probably rate her other one "Frank" too high just based on how good her voice was cause there are better / more memorable songs on this one and she's singing just as good.
I'm not surprised but there's more chops here than the tabloid view of her suggests. The vibe she's grabbing is older but she's doing it really well. Tons of feeling and the instrumental work has all the flourishes to accent what she's bringing so smoothly. I always like an artist who feels real and this album carries emotion. Great vocal talent too, especially in her ability to go from almost silent to powerful in the same bar. I'll likely listen to this again.
This is a really listenable album. Her vocals are interesting enough to grab attention and the writing is captivating. The production sounds great. The music itself is played too safe and sometimes forgettable. Not sure if this belongs here but kudos too whoever put Ghostface Killah on the "You Know I'm No Good" remix
Fav: Tears Dry On Their Own Least Fav: Wake Up Alone
80/100
A true classic sound with a very modern edge for the time. We lost a unique voice when we lost amy
Pretty good album, but I expected a little more after hearing so much about it. Some of the songs start to sound the same after a while, but that is okay, because they are still good songs.
3.5/5
A classic 60's style R&B/Soul album, with the odd reggae track "Just Friends". The lady sure can sing, but ultimately, it all depends on whether or not you're a fan of this style of music.
Best sou from last 20 years
What a voice! What great songs. What might have been? I was slightly disappointed by the recording and production, all the character in the brass and strings has been "filed down" somehow, leaving just the sound with none of the transients. Could have been virtual instruments for all you can tell.
Not a fan of the weird reworking of Ain't No Mountain in "Tears Dry on their Own" but overall the album is a great throwback of old school type soul. None of these songs are that happy, but the horn arrangements make up for it.
The Biopic about her is a Crime. Doesnt do Justice to a complex Woman Like Amy Winehouse
I like it!
I was really unsure on this one. I heard a lot of reviews at the time and requests from her father to not buy it. The idea was it was glamorizing addiction and furthering her self-destructive habits. First, to me it does not glamorize addiction, there is a lot of sadness and bluntness behind her music. To some it may be glamorizing but in reality it is just her speaking about her life. For her family, I understand the concerns and can only imagine the difficulty they deal with when it comes to losing their daughter to such a difficult disease. In the end this was a dark beautiful album that reflects on a life full of hard times.
Back to Black is a great soul and RnB album. The voice of Amy is just fantastic. In retrospect the lyrics in a lot of the songs are really sad.
Cardinal sin: never do a Marvin Gaye interpolation. Similar to the Adele but probably better so I say 4. Don’t rly think it’s a top 10 all time album @apple While I think this sounds good, the failed Marvin/hitsville interpolation demonstrates some of my issues with this record. Did this song sound better than the original? No. Did it do anything to push the boundaries of this kind of music in anyway? I don’t think so. It’s good for an early 2000s pop record, but if we actually want to put it up against some classic mowtown and soul music this falls short. Perhaps I need to listen to this when I’m sadder or get broken up with, but after listening I put on some Marvin Gaye, and it’s significantly better. I guess I’m just arguing against apple and some rediculous straw man , but whatever
Very good. Great voice. Although I swear this album already popped up on this list? What am I thinking of? I didn’t know (or simply forgot) The Dap-Kings were the band on this album.
Really good and really sad. It’s a shame that she didn’t come out the other side of what she was going through. This had a bunch of great music on it, but couldn’t quite get to a five for me, for whatever reason. She deserves all the accolades and recognition she got.
Absolute classic, but I don't want to let the nostalgia tint my ratings!
This is just a solid as hell album, what more can I say. Great vocals, great lyrics, and groundbreaking genre blending. Amy truly was a huge loss from the world, she deserved better and we all deserved more from her.
Very good album, always a pleasure to listen to it every now and then. Also, pretty consistent, almost any song can be a single.
I like it, nice album 😊
Schöner Soul.
Great voice, amazing arrangements, it was very good overall. My only complaint, some of the songs were a bit boring after a while, there was no variation.
Really liked this. I had added this album to favorites after listening to the first Amy Winehouse album (Frank) on here. Will definately be listening again to both in the future.
Better than average
I love the singles off this album (except ‘Love is a Losing Game’). ‘Tears Dry on Their Own’ is AMAZING. However, overall, while I found the music itself interesting and I think Winehouse is a talented lyricist, this album simply didn’t appeal to me. I preferred ‘Frank’.
Great album but so sad what happened to her
i've been wanting to listen to amy winehouse for a while now! her vocals are incredible, and her lyrics have both humor and tragedy. i like the jazzy, jukebox feel to these songs. her style is iconic, i didnt realize i had already heard snippets of some of these songs before and didn't know they were by amy winehouse. i read up on her history and it seems like she was truly a lovely person, just with many struggles, and that's reflected in her music. RIP 💔 i personally liked this album but it's not a 5 star for me.
Such a great album.
Nonaned extreme stimme undso und crazy album aber halt jz auch eher nit so catchy -- würd i wieder anhören aber nit wirklich täglich
I think this a good to great album. I didn't know until reading the notes today that The Dap-Kings were Amy's backing band -- and that makes so much sense! I am sucker for the R&B/Soul revival and is one of the best in the genre!
I was promised a unique modern spin on soul music, and that's exactly what I got. The vocals and the horn section are great. But the songs are a bit too real.
Amy Winehouse greier det som få er forunt: Smelte sammen tidligere musikkstiler, her spesielt swing og soul, inn i det moderne musikkbildet. Godt hjulpet av bl.a.
-The only songs I'm 100% sure I know are the title track & "Rehab", though I've been looking forward to hearing this for a while now. (Frank [2003] was 497 albums-a-day ago :0) -ok, I also know "Tears Dry On Their Own". Classic - a Sunday comfort listen, at least as much as it can be knowing her tragic decline after Back to Black's release. I've never been the biggest fan of Winehouse's tunes, but I recognize greatness when I see it. HL: title track, “Tears Dry On Their Own”, “Rehab”, “He Can Only Hold Her”, “Addicted” (bonus track, not on the CD copy I found) May 19, 2024
Such a different album when it first came out. Starts out really strong. I do think that it ends kind of weak. Her voice and persona are so unique. It really is a shame that she passed away so young. I think she really could have made some great music.
An endearing yet very melancholic soul record written in the aftermath of a recent breakup, and Amy really sells it with her truly one-of-a-kind voice. There's a strong tenacity to the singing along with the instrumentals that leads to a pretty consistently great listen, even if I find the tracklist to be fairly front-loaded.
one of the greatest to ever do it...the singles from this album go so crazy hard. incredibly nostalgic for me. faves: you know i'm no good, some unholy war
A great album but marred but Amy's sadness. You can hear it in her voice making it not as full or vibrant as her first. Hauntingly good, but not her best I think.
I actually liked this album more than I thought. Her voice and this jazz like sound was really impressive.
overall I really enjoyed this album. love the Motown/jazz/throwback sound. she's got a great voice & talent at expressing herself through lyrics. that rawness with lyrics is quite a contrast to the music (I enjoyed it). given how her life ended though, it does come across pretty bleak and sad
Tales of self-destruction, booze & drugs, and failed relationships set to neo-soul music that doesn't sound like it could have come from 2006. What sets this album apart is that she is a phenomenal singer. There are so many singers who write songs about drinking and cheating, but none of them sound like Amy Winehouse.
I had never listened to any of her songs besides the super famous ones so this was cool
amy winehouse is the most prevalent example of needing to look into a discog. all her hits are good ofc but when u listen to her bsides and less streamed tracks you get such a bigger look into how gifted of a artist she was.
Simply simply lovely 4/5
I likey
Didn’t really appreciate this when it came out, but I really enjoyed the Motown inspired grooves, despite the lyrical content being a bit depressing when considering what became of Amy. A great album and I’ll listen again for sure
Quintessential Amy, through and through. Such an incredible singer, so unique.
I was familiar with a few songs that I sing on the regular, then there were a couple I had never heard before, but I liked pretty much all of them. You can hear how much she matured, her voice, between this album and the one we had earlier and I enjoy it quite a bit. Her style is very different but good, and it was just a good album.
It's nice to have a more-recent album in here on occasion but a little ironic this one comes dialed in with a retro sound - I like it. The music on this album is definitely more to my liking than from her first album. She still does that vocal thing I don't love (although much less on this album). I feel like I critique vocals on every album (I do) - she's got a great voice but it's her style that sometimes triggers me. The modern extension at the end of words that's hard to describe... over-vowelizing? I think it's changing her formants in the vowels. It's a choice, I don't love it. The scratchy and organic sound to the music tho - this is great and definitely overshadows any ridiculous gripes I have about vocals. Is this a mono sound on the drums? I usually hate lo-fi but it's more like a stylistic choice here. Fave tracks: "Tears Dry On Their Own" and "Back To Black." TL;DR: cool album overall (I nitpick. Vocalists hate me.) and short which really works for it - any more would be too much. 7/10 4 stars
Ok!
Taken far too soon - great album and you can really hear the tortured soul
Sounds modern and classic at the same time, will and has aged well
a rare instance where music based around a singers voice doesn’t suck. Her voice is like an instrument that adds to the rest of the band, without the rest of the band being reliant on it.
It was good
Man. Alcohol can be brutal. What a talent and what a tragic waste.
WE R SO BACK #7monthhiatus sorry guys anyway. I didn't really fw Rehab that much (but I already knew that), but I loved the album overall. I like the instrumentals and LOVE her voice. I can definitely hear the influences it had on artists like Adele lol. I liked the pop sound and appreciated the soul aspects, the latter didn't really work too well for me though. Sorry black people. Very fun (to listen; not lyrically) album. High 4/5! 1 point off for influence from black people! Favourites: Back to Black (lol), Tears Dry On Their Own
This album gave me exactly what I was looking for when I started this journey. I, of course knew about Amy Winehouse and also couldn't escape her songs (singles which I liked). But I never listened to the albums in their entirety. This album is very good! The lesser songs are at a minimum good. And the better songs are great! Rounded up for stars
Amy is certainly talented, her voice is great and her music has a surprisingly good to great band. It's hard for me to relate to her work since it is largely immoral with several songs talking about cheating or drug use. Doesn't bother me too much as she is hardly the first muscian to sing of those things, but it does put up a wall that keeps me from loving it. There is a great stretch in the middle that I really, really enjoyed between Love is a Losing Game, Tears Dry On Their Own, and Wake Up Alone.
Very edgy and different. I liked this album a lot!
Loves: Rehab You Know I’m No Good - love the tropical feel Back to Black Notes: Her voice was so good. I’m going into this with a little familiarity, but I’ve never heard the entire album. I get mafioso noir jazzy vibes, and that’s sexy and beautiful.
Let's lead with the most obvious observation here. It's clear this album made way for mega-artists like Adele, and despite how sadly short-lived Amy's life was we're lucky to have had her deliver this soulful, classic album. The title song "Back To Black" is undeniably catchy and well-written, as are the other four singles that this monster of a record delivered ("Rehab", "You Know I'm No Good", "Tears Dry on Their Own", and "Love Is a Losing Game"). While the last several songs on Back To Black didn't grab me the way the singles scattered on the first half do, this is a solid front-to-back listen. While it was likely intentional, in retrospect it's sadly prophetic that the album opens with "Rehab" and closes with "Addicted" (yes it's a light-hearted bop about enjoying weed, but still) given the tragic life arc that ultimately befell Amy. Listening to Black To Black allowed me ample time for reflection of just how sad it is, selfishly, for us music lovers to have lost a voice like Amy Winehouse's. 4 stars: I am struck by this album. Interesting Factoids from Wikipedia: *Influenced by the pop and soul music of 1960s girl groups, Winehouse collaborated with producers Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, along with Sharon Jones' band The Dap-Kings, to assist her on capturing the sounds from that period while blending them with contemporary R&B and neo-soul music. *Back to Black sold 3.58 million copies in the UK alone, becoming the UK's second best-selling album of the 21st century so far. The album has sold over 16 million copies worldwide. *Most of the songs on Back to Black were solely written by Winehouse, as her primary focus of the album's sound shifted more towards the style of the girl groups from the 1950s and 1960s. Winehouse worked with New York singer Sharon Jones's longtime band, the Dap-Kings, to back her up in the studio and on tour. *The song "Tears Dry on Their Own" samples the main chord progression from Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's 1967 song "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". Remi stated that he thought the album needed something "up-tempo" and suggested to Winehouse that she procure a "slower, sadder conception" of the song. *Following Winehouse's death on 23 July 2011, sales of Back to Black drastically increased across the world. The album rose to number one on several iTunes charts worldwide. *After the release of Back to Black, record companies sought out more experimental female artists. Other female artists signed to major labels included Adele, Duffy, V V Brown, Florence and the Machine, La Roux, and Little Boots. In the years after Back to Black was released, Dan Cairns of The Sunday Times noted that there was a "notion [by A&R executives, radio playlisters and the public] that women are the driving commercial force in pop". Interesting Factoids from SongFacts.com: *[On "Rehab"]: The lines, "I'd rather be at home with Ray" and "There's nothing you can teach me that I can't learn from Mr. Hathaway" are references to two of Winehouse's soul music inspirations: Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway. Hathaway is best known for his duets with Roberta Flack: "Where Is The Love?" and "The Closer I Get To You." *[On "You Know I'm No Good]: This song borrows the bass line from House of Pain's 1992 Transatlantic Top 10 single "Jump Around." *[On "Back To Black"]: Amy Winehouse explained to the Sun newspaper on October 27, 2006 before (she and then ex-boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil) re-established their relationship: "'Back to Black' is when you've finished a relationship and you go back to what's comfortable for you. My ex went back to his girlfriend and I went back to drinking and dark times." Standout Tracks: Rehab, You Know I'm No Good, Back To Black, Love Is A Losing Game, Tears Dry On Their Own, He Can Only Hold Her
First half kinda bangs second half good but doesnt bang
A great. Got the cd in bimma . rehab is a bit annoying now.
She’s got an amazing voice. I can’t lie though, it’s a little unnerving how catchy the song Rehab is, considering how her life ended.
Bluest sorrowful
Never took the time to listen to this cover to cover, but glad I finally did. Great production and the backing of the Dap Tones gives this an authentic feel. Her voice is fantastic.
Amy was an incredibly talented gothic noir chanteuse. This album feels more truly her than Frank. The one problem I have is that she she often favors playing with lines in a way that robs them of emotion. I end up hearing a show of dexterity rather than shaping the feel of the song. Supremely talented yet not mature enough to hold back. Great album.
I like the jazzy, big band sounding songs. I can hear her influence on others I like.

Iconic
What a wonderful and sad album. Heart and tats on a sleeve, life in a broken shot glass, laid bare for a world to celebrate and mourn over.
I was never a real fan of Amy, but this collection of songs are certainly very soulful, and her voice absolutely rocks.
Anyone who doesn't like Amy Winehouse's voice is simply wrong, and we are not the same. She really has such a gorgeous, unique voice and her songs are so filled with emotion. The one weakness of this album is that all the songs start sounding pretty similar after a bit but they're all so good that it's not necessarily the worst thing.
Gone before her time but she definitely left behind some amazing music. Wine house had a style all her own that many have attempted to replicate but no one could perfect. This is a great album. Great songs m, great production, great singing. It just works from start to finish. A modern piece of musical art that will always be a good listen. 7.9/10
Little bit of filler but 'Love Is A Losing Game' is pretty good init.
It’s a good album, Amy was awesome, easy to listen to. not a 5 for me but a 4.5
very sad to hear that first song and know people were trying to help
1st time listening. Rather good will give it 4 stars but could go to 5 on subsequent listenings
Really like Amy Winehouse. Sad life for the artist.
The album starts out in an excellent manner, but unfortunately takes a nosedive after Love is A Losing Game, which prevents it from teaching the top.
Some bangers, not really my style
Good
This is the album that broke her smh
Powerhouse of a voice and a tragic loss.
The tip of the spear for the British new soul singer revolution, Adele and Duffy would soon follow, but while the vibe feels right, the whole package just comes off as somewhat unauthentic. Sure Amy has the look down with the beehive so and smokey eyes, but it's hard to look past the near constant tabloid sensationalism about her much storied drug abuse and fractious relationships. They tried to make her go to rehab... It's genuinely a good to great album, but in a post Amy world is hard to listen to and not wonder what might have been if she had gone to rehab.
Pleasantly surprised
I've heard some of these songs obviously, but never the whole album. It's pretty amazing! Amy has such an iconic, powerful voice, and her lyrics are so evocative of classic jazz vocalists while being rooted in the present. It's tragic she was lost at such a young age, she was incredibly talented. RIP Amy Winehouse.
Such a beautiful voice
Another talented narcissist.
Pretty dang good
Before Adele was the mainstream powerhouse that she is, Amy Winehouse was bringing amazingly soulful vocals to listeners in a style reminiscent of times and years gone by. And Back to Black is the album where she broke through to mainstream listeners and got so much recognition for her talent. Adele and other contemporary soul artists like her in the current mainstream had the road paved for them by Amy Winehouse, who chose to do this kind of music unapologetically, even when it was far out of fashion. Amy is so good at what she does, and this album was her peak. She demonstrates such control over her vocals, seemingly achieving those soulful and jazzy affectations with no effort. She conveys the pure energy and liveliness that this type of music was known for in the 50s and 60s. I've always thought "Back to Black" was such a perfect title for this album. While Amy is definitely modeling her work after and singing in that 50s/60s soul style, the soul found here isn't your mama's soul music. She covers a lot of darker topics here including drugs, alcohol, infidelity, and trauma, much of which is spurred on by her relationship turmoil that she was facing at the time. It's still got that "classy" sound associated with soul and jazz, but the lyrical content is just a little bit grittier and darker; it's stuff you don't hear from similar sounding artists of past decades. This album is definitely an important one in the progression of music and the reintroduction of this particular type of soul music into the mainstream, and deserves its spot on this project!
#16 Amy Winehouse - Back to Black (2006) Pop Soul, Rhythm & Blues, Soul Neo-Soul, Jazz Pop, Brill Building This album sounds like a fancy expensive wine. What a goddamn voice Amy had, gone far too soon. Favourite Tracks: Back to Black, Rehab Least Favourite Track: Me & Mr Jones
Her songs, her voice - perfect combo
Surprised that I liked this album, such a beautiful voice
Wow! What a funky mash-up of jazz, blues and a little rock, sung by a superior vocalist with a great set of pipes. This is an unusual work, a unique sound and style. When Ms. Winehouse passed, I had no idea what had been lost.
Good tunes with good lyrics. The album isn't engineered well.
4 They say good artists borrow, great artists steal, and Amy does that with her influences clearly on her sleeve here. Despite being a white British woman doing so some 40 years after the artists she was inspired by, she’s somehow able to pull off a modern rendition of the Motown sound so well that it makes you wonder why a revival of the genre hadn’t been attempted already. I do think that speaks largely to Amy’s talent though, because to my knowledge, it hasn’t been done successfully again since. Maybe it was just the right time and place, but for an album that’s nearing 20 years old itself, not a single one of these songs feel out of place today. In fact, they feel just as timeless as the tracks she was attempting to emulate. Though, what sets Amy’s music apart are lyrics like: “What kind of fuckery are we?/Nowadays, you don't mean dick to me (dick to me)” Honestly, it’s a large part of what made this album for me - there’s something really funny and enjoyable about the contrast between the music and lyrics. That to say, the album does a good job of tying everything together topically under a theme of broken and failed relationships - I’m not sure quite how autobiographical each and every song is, but given Amy’s known turbulent love life, it’s a bit of interesting insight into her state of mind. I enjoyed just about every song here, though Rehab, You Know I’m No Good, and Back to Black were clear highlights. As it just so happens, those three were all produced by Mark Ronson. Being that the dude only produced half of the songs here (all of which are probably the best ones), I can’t help but wonder how much better this could be if he produced the full thing (no offense, Salaam Remi). I’ve never considered myself much of an Amy Winehouse fan, but I enjoyed this album a lot more than I thought I would, and I think I developed quite a bit more respect for her in the process. This sent me down a bit of a wormhole into her life story, and while I don’t think the major beats are a mystery to anyone, I still can’t help but emphasize how tragic and troubled she was as an artist (as so many of the best are). As much as I’m sure we all wish she could still be here with us today, I don’t think her lifestyle was leading her in any other direction. RIP Amy - Hope you’re jamming with Kurt, Jimi, Janis, and Jim somewhere now.
4/5
Another awesome album, full of doo wop, soul, and Motown influences
There's some really accomplished songs on here. Lots of character and depth of feeling. The production is superb. It's not the kind of thing I'd put on usually, but I can't deny it's a really good album. That's why I'm going 3.5 rounded up.
Amy's voice is just.. where does all of that come from? Anyway, great album, amazing voice, songs were bops. Would recommend.
Fantastic album! Amy was such a unique talent in the Pop landscape at the time and this album does a great job showcasing what made her so special. Her vocals are so sincere and the vibe feels like it’s been soaked in bourbon, it’s so cool to hear a classic sound presented in a modern fashion without being too kitschy. I feel it starts to drag a bit in the back half and get a bit inconsistent (particularly the Remi-produced tracks) but still overall a strong outing that holds up over 15 years later. Top tracks: Rehab, You Know I’m No Good, Me and Mr Jones, Back To Black, Tears Dry On Their Own, He Can Only Hold Her
I’m back with a strong 3.5 bb So this is just kind of a sad album knowing about Amy. If you aren’t familiar with the lack of support she had in her addictions to both drugs and alcohol AND her eating disorder, it’s like it didn’t matter as long as she could get on stage and make that money. And what makes it all worse is that it has Mark Ronson stamped all over it. With that said, I still have a soft spot for this album. I will always love Tears Dry On Their Own. It’s just so good. Love is a Losing Game is so much better in its original state with the acoustic guitar, but it’s way overproduced on this album. Everything is overproduced for a lady who just didn’t need it. Ugh.
It’s good, but flawed. I can’t put my finger on why but I’m not crazy about the production. It’s clear it’s trying to feel old, but it feels a little to clean in a way that I can only say feels 2008. Amy is great on this album and given the history the songs hit a little harder today than they might’ve then
This was amazing I already knew and loved several songs from this album and found a few more.
C’est vraiment du bon Soul de qualité. Les bangers comme Addicted, Rehab et Back to Black se démarque énormément du lot, le reste est bien mais j’en aurais voulu un peu plus pour un 5.
I'm gonna enjoy this one! Amy Winehouse is a legend in the ska scene and this is her biggest hit before her tragic death in 2011. This is one of the albums I've always told myself I should listen to but never truly brought myself to it. Also interesting to see songs I haven't heard of despite them being her biggest hits. Rehab: Absolute certified banger, you'd be hard pressed not tap your foot along to this jam. You Know I'm No Good: Sounds a lot like a lot of ladies anthem. Amy Winhouse's voice and accompaniment is excellent. Even the break is amazing. Me & Mr Jones: LOVED this one Amy Winhouse belts it and still feels good on every line. Just Friends: A true ska track, two step, steel drums, and the ever present Amy to tie it together better than anyone else could. Back to Back: Never heard this one before despite it being her biggest hit. The Chorus is incredible but the lyrics are a lot darker than I expected. The Eternal struggle of being a mans side piece but not able to pull yourself from that entanglement. I doubt theirs anything deeper there but you could lay this across addiction and it would map easily. Love Is A Losing Game: This song is a lot more understated but holding to the themes of the previous tracks. I really love the full string accompaniment. Tears Dry On Their Own: I start to get the feeling that Amy's song are all in relation to how she feels with a man. Once again a very dark ballad which an incredible chorus.
So good but sad

Love the album but makes me sad to listen What a talent and spirit lost
Really nice album!
This one is way better then her other album on this list.
Good album start to finish.
Una excelente voz, con variedad de Blues y pop. Muy buena!
She is so slay. Her voice. Her emotions. Fav is probs valerie
first time listening, enjoyed it quite a lot. listened to deluxe edition 2x (2 cd) + 1 more regular. 4.0/5
4.5 stars. Amy Winehouse is pop music that I really dig. She is now more soul than jazz, but the backing instrumentals are still really nice and don't get in the way. Voice is just so listenable. Depth and emotion in the lyrics. Kicks off with the ultra-catchy "Rehab" but there's not a skip on the album.
Outstanding, an old favorite. Thanks for starting my day with this.
Obviously great vocals, and a nice sound that is reminiscent at times of some of the best Motown tracks.
Top album
Definitely embedded in my brain as formative music memories.
Pretty great. Definitely worth the hype.
This was on my "give a proper listen to" list, sobthanks for the nudge.
An excellent homage to the jazz and soul legends of the 40s, 50s and 60s with a little Caribbean twist from time to time. Amy's reverence and knowledge of the music of the past is all over the lyrics and music. A great album, but painful to think what else she could have given us.
Really like her. Tragic loss.
Nice!
so jane just got her shop i cant believe it im so glad except thats just the thing, im not surprised all. in fact, i never really had a doubt in my mind. shes cut from a different cloth, shes knows something no-one else knows, and shes going to nail it we really needed albums like this in 2006 oh yeah the shop used to be called back to blank lololol
Forgot about it. Classy stuff man. Love it
Reminds me of Adele
Lots of wallowing, I'm wallowing with her.
Great album, it had been a while since I listened to all of it! IT was nice paying attention to all the instruments (and empty spaces between them)
Well done.
Dritbra greier! Så nærme 5'ern du kommer tror jeg
What a voice!
Banger after bop. Winehouse simultaneously revived and redefined a genre with 11 tracks in 34 minutes. So many great songs on here like Rehab, You know I'm No Good, Tears Dry, and on and on. Her voice is at its prime on this record and each track is composed with that in mind. I'm pretty sure I've listened to this album before, but I (re)discovered some new-to-me songs that are now in rotation. I love this album.
Great record. What a talent. Rocked it a star because there’s really only one great song (Back to Black)
Didn't realize we were robbed when she died. I would say Adele is a pretty good comparison in terms of voice quality and style. But Amy really keeps it real with drug-laced heartbreak. Definitely will remember for romance.
Haven't listened to this one in years. What's even more apparent now is what a great singer we've lost. If you close your eyes you think that you're listening to one of the jazz greats of old, although she made the sound thoroughly modern. Her most enduring songs are on this album.
I know this album pretty well as my other half plays it a lot! I think it's a bit of a modern classic. I'm not really a big fan of "Rehab" as I feel it sounds a bit gimmicky - almost like a novelty single. But overall the old school sound and the modern lyrics work well against each other and I like most of the songs.
Modern classic.
Tortured soul
I have heard of her but never heard her music, very jazzy and I honestly liked it.
classic for me. RIP
Very talented. Still not exactly my favorite kind of music but still pretty good.
This album really showcases how amazing of a singer Amy Winehouse really was. Her amazing vocal performances are really the highlight of every song. The lyrics are certainly at times hard to listen to in hindsight, but this is definitely a great album. My favourites were You Know I’m No Good and Tears Dry on Their Own
Perhaps she should have gone to rehab... Really captures the feel of 60s soul music but brings a modern(ish) spin to the lyrics. Very possibly one of the greatest pop/funk albums of all time. Too many megahits on this album to not give it a 5
A staple for 40 year old white women. Honestly isn’t too bad as I thought it’d be I liked the instrumentals and her voice is alright. Back to black was definitely my favourite song. Id probably give it a 6.5-7
Favorites: Rehab Video, Back to Black, Love is a Losing Game. Blues and Jazz. Beautiful singer songwriter. Flawed yes but she left quite a legacy for a life cut short at 27.
Killer album!
Excelente. Um dos maiores albuns pop de todos os tempos. Recheado de clássicos, ainda que perca força do meio pro fim, a primeira metade é arrasadora. Destaques para: 1. Rehab 2. You Know I'm No Good 3. back to black
Fantastic album. A modern classic. Amy had so much soul, and she is really delivering here
Best lekker, ik snap de hype wat beter
I only knew a few WAR songs but this album has some great songs and is great to listen to straight through! Really like City, Country, City on this album
I really love Amy Winehouse and her style here, but some of the mixing here really makes me angry. It doesn't feel stylistic, just bad at times. It's not egregious enough that it makes me hate it, but it's really noticeable. Outside of that this album is wonderful. Fantastic instrumentals, production, and vocals on every single track. I think with a remaster this would be an easy 5, but it should not sound this aluminum-can-y made in 2006.
This project has cemented me as an Amy Winehouse fan! This album, while quite sad, was excellent and I really enjoyed it. Listens: 2 Fave Tracks: Back To Black, Love Is A Losing Game Rating: 4
I want to give this 5, but the back quarter of this isn’t so strong. But man most of the record is gold. Her combo of old US soul with songs about love, drinking and the various fuckeries of life is so good.
Skipped this when released 18 years ago. Felt the singles were overhyped and I wasn’t into the retro aesthetic. Luckily the two singles were the first two tracks on the album and got past them first on a full listen. Blown away by the rest of the tracks. The marriage of 60s girl group instrumentation/vocals with lyrics touching on throughly modern struggles and triumphs, if done any less earnestly, could come off as cheesy, but it’s packaged in such a way as to be highly enjoyable, carried by her palpable enthusiasm for this kind of music. Should earn frequent relistens if only to remind me of the feeling you get hearing talent meet passion.
This is an artist who eventually won me over because of her talent and her persona. Initially, I really didn't like the sound of her voice because it sounded contrived-- like a 50's sound. That's to say, I think I'm finally seeing what everyone else already saw. Rehab is my most familiar and least favorite song on this album. If she wasn't singing about the weed dealer and fuckery and all, this album really could've been a 1950's RnB album, so that's weird. But her voice is strong here. The instrumentals and accompanying vocals are really just window dressing or her powerful voice and often strong lyrics. And her voice is pretty lush even when it's singing about darkness which it often is.
So sad that she wasted such a brilliant talent. Grateful for what we have of her work.
Very nice one!
I didn't love her other album but this is really solid. What a shame that she left this world at such an early age.
Highlights: Rehab You know I'm no Good Me & Mr Jones Back to Black Valerie - Live Cupid Some Unholy War - Down Tempo To Know Him Is To Love Him - Live An excellent album from an excellent singer. Amy Whinehouse has a beautiful voice that is complimented by the mood and pacing of the songs. The first half of the album is nothing short of incredible. The second half doesn't quite hit the same high. The deluxe edition second disc adds some excellent tracks as well. Definitely an album I will come back to and one that I have listened to some of the songs many times in my life already!
Timeless voice that's completely unique. The band that accompanies her nails the tones to match her style. This album starts off with a mega hit in Rehab, continues strong through the middle with Back to Black and finishes on solid track with Addicted. Unlike many albums I've heard, the songs flow from one to another with ease. The stylistic choices made by the artist stay consistent through the record but don't get repetitive. The themes of love and addiction and the resulting pitfalls are highlighted by her smoky and expressive voice. Nothing about the performance feels designed by big wigs in an office somewhere. Fav tracks: Rehab, You know I'm no good, Back to Black, Love is a losing game, Addicted.
Good
Like this better than the other amy winehouse we got
Very good album, with some absolute classics.
Loved the first half of this album a lot, loved the second half a bit less but it's in no way bad.
ok
Clearly one of the greatest soul vocalists of our generation. This album can do no wrong. Only God knows the songs Amy would have continued to sing, had she been able to battle her demons.
you know what, as someone who really dislikes Amy Winehouse and her music, I am delighted to find this album was pretty damn good. Rehab is a great song, but the rest of the album is at a good level too. maybe its because I'm getting older, or my taste has just always been weird and awful, but I'm glad I got a chance to listen to this again.
Harrowing but lovely. Modern torch songs with a 60’s soul twist. The Dap-Kings are the secret weapon on this record, they’re a great band and they and Winehouse (what a voice!) complement each other perfectly, like chocolate and milk. It’s an inspired combo, and it’s a sad shame she is no longer with us to make more great albums like this.
I've heard the name Amy Winehouse - but didn't know her music. Really enjoyed this album; recognized several of the songs. Would def listen to again.
My expectation heading in is to not like this. But I enjoyed Rehab, You Know I'm No Good and Me & Mr. Jones more than expected. Tears Dry On Their Own probably the first track that I think I'd like to come back to. I can appreciate this album without really wanting to dip into it too much myself. I think I have to give it at least a 4 because I don't think there are any bad tracks, but it mostly washes over me. It's impressive how Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson made this album that so clearly riffs on a previous time/style, but is also unique and inimitable. I can't think of any other 21st century albums that achieve this sound with any sort of similar quality. Fave Tracks: Tears Dry On Their Own, He Can Only Hold Her 3.9/5
I already liked *Frank*, and this one's even better.
Very good. A few high highs and no real lows.
- wow what a voice - clearly influenced Adele, this must be the OG for this sound - WHY DON’T YOU COME OVER VALERIEEEEEE
Talented lady.
Not as good as Frank but certainly a classic, can’t go wrong with a bit of Winehouse.
not as gritty or good as frank but still top tier
Pues, quitando las dos canciones típica de Amy Winehouse, nunca había oído otra canción suya y me ha molao bastante. Siento que es algo que podría ponerme diariamente de fondo si estoy en esa vibra.
The titular track is a masterpiece. The rest of the album less so, but its solid, doesn't overstay its welcome and ultimately deserves more than 3.
The songs fit the voice which channels the person. Somewhat depressing on the face of it but pretty powerful nevertheless. Whether the style was planned or arose during the sessions it clearly works. The production warrants a strong assist here. Overall a fine album.
Amazing that I didn't listen to this before An amazing voice, irreverent lyrics. A huge talent.
6/11, 55%
7/10
I don't live under a rock so of course I have heard most of the tunes on this record, but that said, listening to all of it all at once, it's super impressive. What a talent! It's not exactly my cup of tea, so I'm not giving it a five, but it's really quite good.
One of the best soul albums of all time. Nothing short of that feat. It’s a brief album but remarkably consist and it’s tragic that this was her last.
Very good album. Enjoyed the sax in a number of the songs
I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. Most of what I knew of Amy Winehouse previously was her singles, which are good but not really my taste. There are a lot of gems on this and her talent is undeniable.
Well done with a Motown throw back vibe. If that's what they were going for, great. If not, I would have liked to have heard something original in the vocals. Regardless, this is a very good album, and I think I just found my wife's xmas present. Thanks!
i love this album. i don't know how to rate it because i want to be critical for the degree to which it emulates its source material, but it's so committed to the bit that it WORKS. it sounds great 17 years after it arrived. i think the lyrics in particular work so well and lift it into the 21st century. as much as i love the singles, i love the less well-known tracks on this album. works together as an album, works broken out into singles. rip amy winehouse
I have no particular attachment to either artist, but at least once or twice I thought "Man Adele really stole her whole vocal sound didn't she" Me and Mr. Jones gets the album an extra star all by itself. "What kind of fuckery is this" is a wonderful line
love the songs i knew, enjoyed the songs i didn't. 3.5
really solid front half but the back half kind of drags
So painfully soulful I always loved her voice
Loved this
Amazing voice, lovely retro vibe, tragic life. 4/5
Some absolute classics and in the right setting could be a 5 star album
Some top notch songs but others are transparent
An album with a retro 60s motown sounds made in 2006. She had a great voice, lyrically autobiographical, about her struggles with drugs that ultimately ended her life. Sadly we'll never know what she would have done. I enjoyed the modern take on a 60s sound, overall it was a good album. Standout tracks Rehab, Me & Mr. Jones, Back to Black, Tears Dry in Their Own, and Addicted
Amy Winehouse is such a pivotal figure in modern R&B. Super unique voice paired with a classic styling of Blues and Jazz instrumentation makes her wholly one of a kind.
Fantastic album! Already new a bunch of songs but I really enjoyed what I discovered =)
Really enjoyed this one. 3.5 out of 5.
Ive listened to it in the past and Amy Winehouse is amazing. She died too young
I can see why she's well regarded in pop-fan circles. Back in Black, Tears Dry on Their Own, and Wake Up Alone are standouts for me.
3.8
Didn’t really listen to her, I know she was a great artist but for me it’s a 4.
Amy is an insanely great performer, but not every song is the best idea it could be, and the production can be unsurprising
Considering time it was released, it’s a refreshing sound amidst the electronic pop sound of the mid-2000s. A love letter to 60s Motown without feeling tacky. Amy’s vocals feel raw and heartfelt. Great album.
Oh wow. This is a throwback from my school days. I think she's a tad overrated. BUT this is a very influential album for the English soul scene that birthed Adele
lol
It’s a good album…but I didn’t truly love it.Rehab is the only song i really liked, the rest of the album is alright.I guess I’m just not an Amt Winehouse kind of guy.I understand why this was so popular though. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to most of the other Music at the time.
Surprised by the quality of the album.
Surprisingly good- didn’t think I’d be a fan 8/10
This is a difficult record to rate. For all intents and purposes it is a five. Production and performance is perfect. Winehouse's career cracked the protective shell of music history letting the spirits of 50s, 60s and 70s soul and R&B to re-infect music for years to come. Yes, I am aware that this music was always alive and well in a genre sense, and there have always been artist build on it and perfecting it, buy Winehouse jammed it into the mainstream shoving pop music contemporaries out of her way. Can I call it a five if I am not tickled enough to want to come back to it with any frequency? I might listen again, at some point, but when?
Easy listening. Great for weekend mornings
solid. a couple of classics which i love
Nema se što puno reć za Amy, jako dobar album, al ne baš ono mega dobar ka što bi čovik očekiva.
Super godt album.
Soulful, reflective, and energetic. Strong showing across the album. Surprising to be able to combine those qualities in pop consumable hooks and tracks.
-Very soulfull - clean vocals
Savršen dablin pab album. 4.5
I've only heard the singles, and at the time was not as open-minded to different music genres. Rehab is such a fantastic opening song, though very tragic given Amy Winehouse's death. I like this more than I expected I would. I'm sad I never gave this more of a chance when it was originally released. 4/5
voice pairs well with the big band instruments
They tried to get me to listen to my 3rd album out of 1001, and I said, Yes, Yes, Yes. It was a jam.
slay
Great album and a great talent. You hear MoTown running deep and wide throughout this album.
Pretty solid, the production and her voice are really cool but the overall themes don't really land with me. Good music but not exactly my taste
It was good. Fun songs to sing along to
7/10 Amy is a great singer some great songs on the album but I don’t think I would listen to the full thing again. Favorite song is back to black
Never listened to Amy before, beautiful timbre, some impressive arrangements as well. Such a shame she left us as early as she did, she had a lot more art to make.
Sunday mornings don't get much better
Incredible album. Amy Winehouse’s voice is the star of the album, her tone is amazing. Unfortunately a little front loaded, with some not quite as satisfying deep cuts on the second half of the album but as it’s a concise 34 minutes it doesn’t detract too much from the album. The neo-soul feel makes the album feel far older than it is, but that isn’t a negative. Overall I really enjoyed it but I don’t see myself coming back to it too frequently, aside from a few key tracks, the standouts being ‘Me and Mr. Jones’ ‘Back to Black’ and ‘Rehab’
Riktigt bra, har hört talas om och hört dängorna förut men blev väldigt positivt överraskad. Särskilt blandningen av genrer uppskattas
Great album but very sad that she died so young and in such a tragic way.
4.5
Great songs.
Well then... It's Amy Winehouse as we all know her. Nothing less, nothing more. Powerful voice, full of passion.
Amy sure had one hell of a voice. I wasn’t a fan when she was actively recording, mostly bc Rehab seemed like such a cheesy one-hit wonder kind of deal. I still don’t like that song. But then one day I heard Back to Black and realized there was real talent here. This album is her best work overall, and despite Rehab’s annoying ear worm quality it is a major part of her legacy as an artist. Rest in power, Amy.
Paula listened to some of the songs because she’s an Amy fan and gives it a four👍…
I love the way she uses her voice, and her lyrical twists. Usually I wouldn't go for such retro music, but she takes it somewhere else, in a way that other similar artists couldn't. Such a tragedy the way she was torn apart.
Great sound. Some really nice tracks.taken far to soon.
Such a voice. Many great songs on this one.
Excellent rhythms, fitting voice style, and pure fun.
Not much I can add to the convo here. An all time voice. So much charisma in the lyrics and delivery. Great fun and often a bit heartbreaking. Four and a half. Fave track: Tears Dry on Their Own
great soul-y R&B, good listen throughout the entire album
A very good album with some super hits. The only thing that bugs me is my tears will dry on there own has the potential to be the best song but the verse kind of feels out of time and it runs me the wrong way I don't know
was okay getting ms winehouse two albums in a row made this fall a bit flat on my ears, plus i was distracted while listening.
Excellent . Love her music.
Just a grand Ole time. Cannot believe I was duped my whole life into thinking this came out in the 80s instead of 2006 whaat
The Ghostface track was the rug that tied the whole album together. Now it's missing??
Amy Winehouse is an artist I always meant to get around to so I could see what all the hubbub was about and now that I finally have I can see I was missing out. I love the old school motown, swing, bluesy grooves that back up this girl's amazing voice. That's pretty much all this album does. It's a bluesy pop album about substance abuse, loss and regret. If you're turned off by it from the opening track it doesn't really do anything to win you over as the album progresses.
Cracker of an album, but last few songs aren't quite as strong
The song and Amy's voice aside, the instruments and mixing of 'You know I'm no good' are brillaint. Just Friends - another great production and has a very 60's vibe. 'Rehab' and 'Addicted' topical in AW's life I suppose. 'Our day will come' differnt from other tracks. 'Mr. & Mrs. Jones' another great production, with a jazzy feel.lppl) The chord structures and piano stabbed chords in 'Back to black' and 'Wake up alone' give them a 50s / 60s feel. 'He can only hold her' and others, make up a great album. 4 out of 5 for me.
