#547. Look, there's nothing wrong with this. It's not bad or anything, I'm just not the target demographic. This is for middle aged wine moms, not me. 3/5: fine.

This album takes me straight back to high school. I don’t think I could listen to a new Coldplay album start to finish and “Parachutes” is Far from the best album in the world but I still enjoy a listen.

I glanced over the track list and expected that I'd give this one a 4. I think Yellow and Trouble are two on Coldplay's best songs. But then I listened and found that every other track was just boring.

It felt a little too angsty for me. Not enough uppers to balance out the fEeLiNgSsS.

it's ok

Album was fine. Feels like the kind of album I should develop a connection with but didn’t. Nothing really caught my ear outside of Yellow and Don’t Panic which I’ve heard of before and enjoy. However, solid production and it clearly cohesive. An album I’ll have to revisit.

Some nice songs here but unfortunately when I think of Coldplay I think of the singer who I think is a complete KH.

Good songs. Coldplay is not really my type. I did find this to be their better album.

okay, nostalgic but not really my vibe

I’ve never been the biggest Coldplay fan, so I’ve never listened through this album, it was good, favorite song was everything’s not lost, I’m a sucker for a slow building piano song so that one got me.

I could see being in a different time or place in my life and this album being very important. I'm not currently in that time or place. It was ok.

I’m curious to see what my group thinks of this one. It was a favorite of my wife when we meet, so I’m quite familiar with it. I don’t love it like she does, but it’s definitely not a leave the room type album for me either.

Although basic they are good. Good lyrics and I’d love to see one of their legendary concerts

I wanted to hate this but it's not actually that bad. It's certainly better than things like Travis and David Gray, but it doesn't, at any point, stray into acutally good territory. I think the thing that annoys me most about Coldplay is how many people say they're their favourite band. It's like saying your favourite colour is beige or your favourite food is plain rice. It just makes me despair for humanity a little.

p862. 2000. 3 stars. Proof that just because something sells millions, it's not essential listening. Yes, they can knock out a decent tune, but there is a lot of filler and it becomes bland background noise reallll fast.

was aight

3.4/5: this album loves its odd time signatures, and so do I. I imagine these songs being played as a backing track to any of the O.C. Episodes. Sad boi California vibes. easy, chill listening

I’m mostly disappointed that I didn’t hate it. Sure it was pretty basic and most of the songs sounded pottery similar, but it was real easy to listen to. I wish they incorporated some more unique sounds, and I didn’t really pay attention to the lyrics so I can’t speak on that. My favorites were yellow and everything’s not lost.

Pretty basic soft rock stuffs. Not bad at all but not great either. Heavily carried by “Yellow.” Everything else is just quite alright.

There are a few good songs on the album. Most songs sound very much the same. Generally, easy listening that could be played in the background, not really the music for me to sit down and enjoy the entirety of the album.

I liked Yellow when it came out. Still do. The rest doesn’t do a lot for me.

Modern Coldplay is insufferable, but their debut album is the real deal. This coming from someone who could give less of a shit about most soft/alt-rock.

1. Don't Panic (_). A little loud, could be softer 2. Okay. Not unenjoyable. Too long of a listen for me. Reminds me of an American Maccabees. 3. Spies - Enjoyable. I feel like I'll add this to my Playlist but it'll feel like a gimmicky tiktok sound that I'll remove later. 4. I already know this one. It feels like part of a song that I wish there were more of. But no, that's it. Not enough internal variation in this track, I suppose. Also maybe a little too low/hard to hear at times. Not in an alt j way either. 5. No. 6. Yellow. I like the 2nd (chorus?), and the guitar (riff/solo?) But it seems to simple/underwhelming lyrics. I also can't understand them so well, maybe in the alt-j kind of way. Not a fan of 'bleed myself dry' in any context. Just don't like the lyrics. 7. Trouble. Nice piano, nice lyrics. I'd like it acoustic or sped up. The guy (sir) either has voice cracks or some odd autotune. That is a little distracting. The rest i did not remember Day 1 (to see if this is updating) Overall, the album wasn't too long that I'd be bothered by it. Several songs I'd play on repeat here, but some I'd skip.

3/4/25. Probably my favorite Coldplay album. It's quite predictable, but songs are really good. Sparks is among my favorite songs from the band.

I certainly love the debuut of Coldplay, but i have a complicated relationship with it. The individual songs are beautiful - Chris Martin's vulnerable vocals surely do touch. Yellow will always be special. That said, I cannot listen to the entire extend of the album in one sitting. Perhaps the consistent melancholy. I tune out, or I get this sad depressed feeling. It's almost too effective at projecting those elements of vulnerability.

Loved this when it came out. Nice to catch up. Shiver remains a classic. A few too many dull ones though.

Album is ok. Kinda whiny but I guess that's the style. I would listen again on a rainy Sunday

Gets a bad rap but I enjoyed it, love “Yellow”

Really laid back

I can see why they are so popular. Kind of a one size fits all types of people band.

It was fine. Listenable. Unoffensive. I have no strong feelings about this album. Would I seek it out? No. Would I change the radio station if one of these songs was playing? Also no.

Three days after listening to this album, I don’t remember much which is telling I guess.

3- Stars (7/15)

It was fine, I’m not huge on Coldplay in general but I enjoyed a few tracks on it.

Just the mediocrity I expected from Coldplay

Awww a sweet throwback

I can't give Coldpay a 4, but maybe they deserve it for this album. Yellow is a great song, I really enjoyed Parachutes (the song). But man, it's hard to be objective here. Plus, I never agreed to be objective. Even ignoring their subsequent Imagine Dragons arc, just the fact that they tell you about the hidden track on the last song shows you how fucking lame this band is. It's not a hidden track if you tell listeners that it's there! Plus, this exercise has softened me. In a vacuum, no way I give this boring ass album a 4.

Not a huge Coldplay fan though I see why people like them

Not at all had to be fair. Very close to a 4. Shame on some of the guff they’ve released released since.

Rush of blood is better

Helt fint album, tror jeg lidt bedre kunne lide A Rush of Blood to the Head

Endnu en reminder om at Coldplay plejede at være, sådan, ret cool

Jeg skeeeeeed åh ja, jeg sked en bums!

There was a time where I didn’t dislike Coldplay….and it was this first album

I don’t like Coldplay but this is a pretty damn good album. Too bad it all went to shiite after this

Definitely not my favourite Coldplay album.. rating: ⭐⭐⭐ [56/100]

I can kinda get behind 2000 Coldplay 3

Nice to revisit this one. Figured out the Jeff Buckley influence for the first time, so that was cool!

Coldplay, before they became, c-o-l-d-p-l-aaaaaa-y 1st of only 2 good albums from these sellouts

Ngl this all sounds the same to me, pretty dreary. Boring

some songs sound nostalgic, other pretty weak

There was a time when I was into it, and to be fair there is some good songcraft here. It's just that it all sounds so bland and meaningless now.

Wow turns out nostalgia is a powerful drug! I was kind of dreading being reminded of how bad my taste was back in the day, but it turns out the album overall is pretty good even if it does err a little on the side of sappy.

Not my music

I liked this one better than A Rush of Blood to the Head which I did not like. This one was less boring, but still very typical of Coldplay. Very chill, which I like. I know why the songs are popular, they are a pleasant listen, but overall the album was fine.

Not as good as I remembered it being, after not listening to it for awhile. But there's a few solid ones in here.

I’ve never been impressed by what I’ve hear from Coldplay, but I’ve never listened to one of their albums. Like every album on the 1001 I tried to approach this one with an open mind. As background, I noticed plenty of decent moments but was having a hard time putting my finger on why their music has never clicked with me. It was finally on close listen that I started to figure it out. First, if I had never heard Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, or U2 maybe I would be more inclined to think this was good, instead of incredibly derivative. Ok, but let’s evaluate this album on its own merits. The lyrics are pretty bland, almost vapid and honestly I don’t think Chris Martin is a good singer. There are plenty of moments that sound cool, but those are the moments that sound like someone else (sorry, I can’t let that go). I can appreciate why it’s on the list, but it’s amazing how bland this album is given there are more than a handful of cool motifs. I’ll give them the 3 because there are enough cool moments to not bring it to a 2 and because I didn’t mind repeat listens in the background. But this definitely didn’t change my opinion about Coldplay. Songs with moments I liked: Shiver, We Never Change, Everything's Not Lost (I'm a sucker for anthemic endings).

Pretty easy listening album. I do like early Coldplay alot better than newer Coldplay

Colpday está envejeciendo dpm no?

Resulta aliviante escuchar Coldplay eliminado la movida roc de estadio

Seems like their classic album, and it's pretty well done. I'm not a cold play fine, so it's a little whiny for me--this list is heavy on the whiny soft rock album for me so far. Kind of depressing as well, but it fits right in there with Radiohead for suburban soft rock depression masterpieces.

Only identified with one song on this album, everything else sounded the same. It’s listenable, but man, why are you so depressed? 5.5 mediocre choice brisket

I've always associated Coldplay with U2 for some reason, I don't know, they just remind me of each other. I also got Snow Patrol and Coldplay confused sometimes when I was young. Anyway, I prefer Coldplay to U2, and thought this was an okay album; the first half was pretty good, but then I kind of zoned out in the middle before it picked up a bit at the end.

Jeff Buckley inspired a lot of UK singers to do soulful falsetto (famously Thom Yorke left a Buckley in tears to complete Fake Plastic Trees), Travis was another big band from the era that have kuddos to the great Jeff. Muse too were inspired by the american singersongwriter(Matt Belamy bought Buckley's telecaster 3 years ago) Parachutes is a perfect autumn/winter time album, from the soft landing Don't Panic to the euphoric chorus of Everything's not Lost this is a band that began their way following the steps of their peers, but found more success than the rest. Imagine writing a single about the yellow pages and it becomes the signature song of your band instead of the intended single (Shiver a song about not being noticed, life finds a way to make jokes sometimes). I tried to learn some of the songs in acoustic guitar, but Chris Martin loves tuning the guitars in weird ways(at least true for this album). While I don't like what the band became after Viva La Vida this is an stunning debut. 7/10 Shiver should've been more popular than what it was.

if you think you're too good for coldplay you should see a doctor

7/10 I think in recent years Coldplay has gotten the Nickleback treatment of most overplayed and overhated band in recent times. Probably because Coldplay still gets huge play everywhere and Nickleback doesn’t, they fucking dropped an album 3 months ago and I didn’t notice until writing this right now, time isn’t real anymore. But one thing I can say about Coldplay that I can’t say about Nickleback is “this is nice”. I can’t hate on any of this, even the lowest points on this album are completely inoffensive to me, I can see why everyone has been so kind to these albums in a way that isn’t just British people compensating for the lack of crossover hits in the States. Honestly the worst parts of this album are when they closely resemble the band they’re known to be the offspring of. Even though everyone is sick and tired of Coldplay, the best moments on this album are the most Coldplay Coldplay songs, and for the most part, they try not to venture off to the Radiohead abyss and do any more extra shit that they couldn’t accomplish, they make Pop songs, that’s all I really need for them to do. https://x.com/coldplaywisdom/status/294330347200593920?s=46&t=25slwivCYKHKuU9GWyCVDg

Don't Panic Shiver Yellow Trouble

Gostei

Like a beige Radiohead

I feel like I should like this one more than I do

7/10 Radiohead but like vanilla

This is the first time I've ever really given Coldplay the time of day. It's actually better than expected. Pretty basic and a little repetitive, but still enjoyable.

Coldplay generally gives me a fairly visceral "YUCK, I DON'T LIKE THIS!" feeling, as their sound if a bit too commercial for my liking. That said, they hadn't quite yet stumbled into their go-to formula for commercial success on this first album, so this one is somewhat interesting to listen to. I still don't love it, but it's not bad.

Fav tracks — Sparks, Trouble

It's nice to remember that before they made the most sterile corporate pop of all time, Coldplay actually didn't suck. There's a handful of bangers on this album. The rest is fine. 6/10

It's fine. Not nearly as annoying as I was expecting.

So I am not a Coldplay fan, I never have been but the songs that I do respect their early work and Parachutes is a very very good debut album. The influences are clear, and as someone who is a huge Travis fan - I am glad to hear the influence of them loud and clear here which I was actually surprised for it to be so blatant at times (I'd say I hear it most in Sparks). Best track for me is 100% 'Shiver' but I think that must be quite a common opinion? I love the changes melody, actually the melody progressions in a lot of songs is really interesting and I think what sets Coldplay a step above others who were trying to do the same at the same time and probably why they did not just get forgotten into the background. Overall, a solid solid album and one that shouldn't be judged by the embarrassing band Coldplay now is.

He sounds like a bicycle pump

Coldplay was definitely a breath of fresh air when they first came out, especially considering what was happening in music at the time. On the flip side, bands that define an era often get stuck in a paradox, becoming products of their time, and Coldplay is definitely a product of the early 2000s. Overall, I think they’re a pretty good band with decent music. I’ve always appreciated their atmospheric soundscapes, but they’re not a band I feel much desire to revisit these days.

Het heeft niet voldaan aan de verwachtingen, maar ook niet slecht

Rock, Pop, 2000 -> 3

Coldplay has kind of become a joke within the cultural zeitgeist over the years, but the result of that is that this album is actually better than I was expecting. At the end of the day though it still sounds like early-00s coffee shop music. I actually think Coldplay's best album is "Viva la Vida" which isn't even on the 1001 albums list, so what do I know.

An alright album. Highlights are yellow and trouble obviously. No other tracks really lept out at me though. Probably wouldn't listen to it again

Ei tää ollut niin huono kun ajattelin. Aika tällästä kädenlämpöistä rokkia, mutta varmaan siksi juuri niin suosittua. 3/5

Tää eka levy on siedettävintä coldplayta.

I mean, a well-produced debut album if anything. Something light after all of the Britpop craze. I don't know if Coldplay still gets hate like they used to, but it's not completely unfounded I guess. I wasn't super blown away by the overall product, and I'd say that "Yellow" is as good as it gets here.

Think this caps out at a 3. Solid but meh.

When I got A Rush Of Blood To The Head as my 5th pick on this list, I groaned a little because Coldplay are probably one of the most overrated bands there is (IMO). However, I ended up giving it 4 stars because it was actually pretty good and I wrote that I was surprised how much of it sounded like Parachutes (which was the only album of theirs I'd actually listened to fully). Now I'm faced with that album and I actually think 'A Rush...' might be better?! This was a bit hard-going and depressing at times, and I only really liked two songs (Shiver and High Speed). Even Yellow is wildly overrated. So yeah to my surprise, I'm only giving this 3

3.5 So I fully participate in the Coldplay teasing; it’s pretty well deserved. It’s a band that takes themselves far too seriously. That being said, I kinda have a soft spot for their actual music. I like the hits, and the album as a whole basically sounds entirely the same but it’s not unpleasant. If I had this in my CD player in 2003 it woulda been played constantly.

It's got some classics, and I like the consistency of the sound, but I just wasn't feeling it.

Ok little out of my favorite song

Not as bad as I’d thought before listening. The opener and Trouble are excellent songs. The rest are decent to good, but slightly boring. I didn’t mind listening to it, though

Little did we know when this came out how Coldplay would become the global monsters of banality and the favourite band for people who dont like music but do like flashy lights. I bought this album and enjoyed at the time - listening again kinda hurts but the songs are still good despite being burned into my consciousness over the years. Saw them play this live and they were good and did need the flash and the bangs.

A largely mellow listen with a couple of stand out tunes. I enjoyed this.

The worst thing this experiment has done this far is made me realise I don’t actually mind certain portions of Coldplay.

Early Coldplay had an occasional edge to their songs. While still grounded in pop songwriting, Coldplay explored a fairly warm and rich tone in expressing their songs. This stands heads and shoulders above the sterile, overly-polished production on their last few records. Radiohead influence is noticeable but not exhausting. It adds a nice dimension to the music while still remaining firm in pop songwriting conventions. It's a pleasant album, not bad, but displays a lot of the conventions that would make Coldplay what they are today (boring, tedious, a little bit pretentious)

feels fitting to have this when yellow came on 'bird' recently and i had a kick listening to it for a few days. really solid debut actually! Chris is such a lover boy but the guitars are nice. Maybe just not offensive at all but very nice to listen to anyway on a cold winter day.

It's an ok album, nothing too exciting. Not going to be on repeat any time soon. Coldplay are a band I've struggled with and really don't like anything I've heard of them from recent years. This is probably the best I've heard of them.

Back when they were interesting. Loses points for Chris Martin pretending to be working class

The songs are calm and easy to listen to. It feels simple but thoughtful, like early Travis. It’s warm, almost fragile, but not too heavy. The music feels honest and unpolished in a good way.

I have a painfully embarrassing memory around “Yellow” – someone serenaded me with that song on their guitar on a first date. They did a good job but I did not return the feeling that this song imparts. It was a lot. So that has colored my view of this album as “a lot” and “a little embarrassing,” but it’s not bad.

Solid nothing special though 3.3/5

This is alright. There's some decent hooks and I quite like the production. Not a big fan of Chris Martin's voice at points, especially falsettos, but I wouldn't say he's a bad singer. It does feel a bit plain after a point, I've probably trained myself to let Coldplay go in one ear and out the other though Highlights: High Speed, Don't Panic

Some good songs. But a bit insipid.

Definitivamente.

Mostly as dull as I remember, the singing is just so turgid. Put me in a bad mood. Ok so in the right mood (depressed) a few of the songs may be ok but is it too much to ask for just one song with a bit of oomph, just something to give us a glimpse of hope that there is some joy in the world. Is that too much to ask for? Considered giving it a 1 star but in reality probably nearer a 2. Generously giving it a 3 star rating as Gus’ first dance at his wedding was on this album.

A feeling of terror entered my body getting this the day after being forced to listen to the Kings of Leon. So it was with some relief that this [and grits teeth] wasn’t at all bad. To give credit where it’s due, he’s a good song writer here, and all the tracks are decent (except Yellow, that is just annoying). I remember now they originally had this sort of post-shoegaze type sound (Snow Patrol had the same vibe at the time) on some songs which I like. However, as a vocalist I find him quite dreary, and the more piano driven soppy bollox isn’t so good. I suspect this is their peak for me, and I genuinely dread listening to their stadium eco rock phase……..it’s coming in here isn’t it………inevitable like dawn after a peaceful sleep [grits teeth again].

It has yellow in it, which is cool. I saw that at a band comp. It’s a pretty calm album, with prevalent guitar and drums. I’d like To say this was written in the 2010’s(?) [Was actually written in 2000]. I’m pretty sure this is a British band?

2.5/5. Aggressively fine

pretty alright

I want to like Coldplay but I really can’t stand his voice or the sound of the music so… 3 stars for pretty good production

Not all of the Coldplay hate is warranted. Solid musicianship and songwriting. The comparrrisons to U2 and Radiohead are apt. Radiohead especially with this album. The tracks are disorienting with their speed and tone. Spawned some undeniable hits, didn't quite move me enough for 4.

I do not consider myself a Coldplay fan at all. I was a big time hater for most of their career…HOWEVER. I did enjoy this debut album. They’ve evolved into something entirely different but this is a fine listen. Even good at times.

very pretty

I still don't get Coldplay. I listened to it...

If AI had to create what white people music looked like, it’d be Coldplay. 3.5

Peak coldplay

Happy to have the opportunity today to reflect upon what some may see as my irrational aversion to Coldplay. After all, I like Radiohead and have sometimes been melancholy. . And, to be fair, most of these songs aren’t terrible. I think my issue with this band is that there’s nothing here I haven’t heard before. They’re ok, but not special.

It's fine. Yet another album where the band's good at doing what they do, but I just don't care for what they're doing. Pretty sure I'll feel this way about all Coldplay albums, if there's more on this list.

Safe radio music. Your mum would like it.

This is the definition of a 3 star album. Not great, not bad. Just okay. Listenable, but not overly enjoyable.

For such a vocal-centric record, the writing is really nothing spectacular, and I can only take so much of Chris Martin. But darn if there aren't some great melodies. Shiver and Yellow are the stand outs. Spies is kinda boring.

2599 - This is alright, but it's a very niche type of pop rock music. It's sort of like Verve but even more commercial sounding, or Blur but swagless.

Overrated band and probably their best record. Just some lovely, occasionally beautiful 2000z rock 7.9

I can understand why this is many people's favorite Coldplay album - it's so comforting and embracing. But the soft acoustic and piano-driven sound, Martin's warm, held-back vocal performances, and straightforward lyricism have always held it back for me compared to some of their later 2000s works. I personally never liked the song 'Sparks' all that much but 'Yellow' may be one of my favorite Coldplay songs - it's tear-jerkingly nostalgic for me and always hits a beautiful melancholic spot. I wouldn't hesitate to call it one of the greatest love songs of all time. I also like the opener 'Don't Panic' quite a lot but yeah overall not the biggest fan of this one. It's nice to vibe to in the background though.

ersti zwei songs vieel cooler alsi gmeint han. aso ha viel ghört dass die erste albe vo coldplay super sind. aber shiver findi suuper gitarre isch huere hässig und dynamik isch riesig vom song. jo sie sind alli gääl. d songs vorher hani halt null kennt und sind au chli a mir verbi zoge. yellow kenntmer halt mega und isch würklich no schön. aber jaaa er seit chli viel alles seg gäl. wies d chords am schluss ändered isch seeehr cool. trouble isch sehr purple rain vom text her haha. hübsch? text sind scho sehr seicht und jo. aber de chli parachutes interlude isch schön gsi. we never change au reecht schön, aber wirds glaub niemeh lose. everythings not lost isch cool mer ghört endlich mol de guy am bass (er heisst guy) und sie sind chli muetig mit de chords.

Sehr entspannt, war ok

I think this is on the list for "Yellow" and that's not a good enough reason. 2.5.

genuinely nice to listen to if you look past whatever preconceived notions you may have about the band and listen to it a few times. i probably still won't think about it that much though. i'll think of it as a "good" album but won't be able to recall any of the songs

Ive been a big fan of Coldplay for years so while these songs arent new to me it was great to have a listen through the album as a whole.

Back in the day, Coldplay put out really solid records. This one is a bit slower and more bloated than 'A rush of blood to the head', but it's still pretty good. 3.5 stars

Good songs, and a good album. Put it on and it passed me by before I realised. Not sure it had the desired impact.

Nicht so meine Musik, aber ok

Ich mag Coldplay. Außer den bekannten hits, yellow, trouble, dont panic eher ein langsames Album. Da fehlt mir etwas Energie. 3/5

Technically good, beautiful voice, simple but effective instruments and rhythms — it's pretty decent for a first listen. Not too long or too short, not experimental but occasionally tries to break out of certain clichés (even though they end up creating new ones). Like anyone with nothing to hide, it’s a bit too smooth. It feels like buying an IKEA table — it does the job, but that’s it. But maybe I’m only being critical because they pulled it off with this kind of music? I’m not sure. This could probably be said about many artists on this list.

All Coldplay sounds the same to me and it’s perfectly fine. 3.5

The white bread of music.

Meh, but yellow is real good

I'm most familiar with 'Yellow' & 'Shiver' from this album, and I do like those songs. I overall have no real strong opinion on Coldplay - there are some songs of theirs I like and some I don't care for. But my overall impression of this album was just....bland. Very beige. And thus, relatively boring. I don't see myself coming back to this album anytime soon, except for the 2 songs I already knew and knew I liked, and also the final track 'Everything's Not Lost', which I had never heard before but I did enjoy.

Seeing the reviews for this album, there appears to be two sides to this album: “Fuck Coldplay” and “Fuck you for hating Coldplay”. Personally, I feel rather indifferent to Coldplay. I’m not inclined enough to particular care for them. And that applies very much to Parachutes, but to be honest, I’m a little disappointed too. The first two tracks (Don’t Panic and Shiver) had this kind of alternative rock vibe that I was digging. I thought that maybe Coldplay was much more of a different band at this beginning stage, like more of an actual rock band rather than whatever they became today. I was a little nervous I might actually like the album (god forbid). But then the album softens and it just becomes a Coldplay album. It doesn’t help when Chris Martin’s vocals get a little grating when he goes for the high notes. I still don’t know what I honestly think about Coldplay and that even applies to the roots of the band’s discography. Favorite track: Yellow Other hits: Don’t Panic, Shiver, Sparks

Very strong debut by one of the biggest bands of their generation. It never hit me just how much heavy lifting Jonny Buckland is doing here. Despite his inexperience, even starting out it's obvious Chris Martin is a really natural frontman and marries some really mature progressions with singable melodies. To my eyes, however, he's had a remarkably uneven track record with his lyrics — some of them are understated and affecting: "spiderweb, and it's me in the middle," from "Trouble"; others are ham-fistedly first-draft material: "I know you won't listen to me / 'cause you say you see straight through me," from "Shiver."

I can’t stand ColdPlay. But I’m going to listen anyway.

it was definitely all yellow

i enjoyed a rush of blood to the head a lot more than this. very bland, but nothing i would turn off if it came on again

I was once on a bus at Disney World having a deep discussion about Coldplay and if you could just like Coldplay or if you could only love or hate Coldplay. At that time I was not a Coldplay fan arguing it all sounded the same. Chris Martin's voice is so distinct yet always the same, and the instruments just always have the same balance of everything. I was also in my 20s and wasn't drawn to the existential lyrics. Listening to a whole album also some variety (I would argue Martin's voice is still one note). I liked the guitar on Shiver and Spies and Sparks were interesting. Now that I am older I appreciate the lyrics more now. They have grown on me but I don't love them. So future self wins the battle declaring you can just 'like' Coldplay.

Pretty music. Its okay. I like Yellow and Shiver.

I can never quite decide how I feel about Coldplay. I want to feel the emotion he’s feeling but can’t quite get there, and I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because his voice isn’t my favorite, maybe there’s just something that feels too manufactured about it. It’s fine music, it just doesn’t hit my soul like I want it to. I do like Yellow a lot, and Shiver was a nice surprise. Overall don’t love it though.

I know Yellow but some of these other songs are heavier than I expected from Coldplay.

Couldn’t do it. Coldplay ain’t my shit. I tried. Got through like 3 songs.

Better than I expected but I prefer their later work. Does have some fun elements of The Beatles and Nick Drake.

-this is solid for a first album. Everyone loves making fun of Coldplay and I’m only closely familiar with their more recent songs, but there’s not much I can say that’s bad about this one. My mom used to play High Speed for me and it’s fucking transcendent -Favorites are Don’t Panic, Shiver, and High Speed

In an alternate universe, Chris Martin was rightly clocked as a sort of crap Nick Drake, the band played the indie circuit for a couple of years, and wrapped up before they were 30 so they could all go off to work in the city. I remember thinking 'yellow' was a stunner at the time. Not much going on beyond that. Passive-aggressively pleasant. How they now routinely pack the biggest stadiums is a total enigma to me. Album is ok in itself, albeit no indication of greatness.

Good album

Never the biggest Coldplay fan but it isnt a bad album. Some good songs.

Just too boring. For people with sleeping problems.

Perhaps it's because I was distracted by work, but the album didn't grab me. Perhaps I should listen to it again?

The best thing about this album is the song “Yellow”. One of their best songs. "Trouble" is an ok song. Most songs are just ok, if not boring.

has some nice tracks but it gets old and way too boring after a while

Really want to give this a 3.5, a very good debut. What happened Coldplay? Why you go like that?

Favorite Tracks: Yellow Spies Trouble

I think I like their follow up better. This is solid and the songs are good, but it's a bit too same-y and formulaic.

The breakthrough of 2000s alterna-pop.

the only coldplay song that’s ever got me so hype is viva la vida and yeah that’s it’s such a boring album like okay yeah we were all yellow i GUESS

Sobrevalorado

Probably best one from CP

Ok, mellow. I remember Yellow being big when this came out, but I never got the hype and still don’t. 3/5

The strong songs on this record are good. Still not sure how Coldplay became one of the biggest pop/rock bands in the world. These songs have almost no edge whatsoever and it only gets worse as their discography goes on, but then again maybe that's what got them their wide appeal.

Turns out watering down Radiohead makes for some grocery store classics 🤷

Managed to avoid this for 24 years, so with some trepidation, I leapt in. They're nothing special. Most of the 10 tracks are indeed pleasant enough, often consisting of standard dad-pop fare with the occasional folksy ballad. They're innocent and inoffensive in general, but in turn, they're also exceedingly generic and immediately forgettable. Impossible to hate, but impossible to generate any emotion for. Blandness personified.

I've always been a Coldplay hater, but I did like listening to some of this .... 3.5

How would Chris Martin sound without his trademark whinging? 🧐

A little boring, but generally listenable

Yellow and trouble were good, the rest were just ok. Not the worst album on this list, but no where near god tier

i was really excited for this album because i hadn’t listened to it before. i know it’s thought of as a super great album of the 2000s and was hoping to agree but i just don’t. like it’s fine but literally nothing standout

Pleasant listening, but it's mostly all a little wispy and whimsical-sounding to me.

Coldplay is coldplay theyve done well but don't deserve the level of praise they've had

Very nostalgic

Unclear how they toured on this album for a year and a half and became such a massive band. It's ok. It strikes me as occupying an uncanny position between the music of the 90s and the music of the 00s. Coldplay will become the 00s ... but just not quite yet.

So I thought I’d hate it. But there is a surprising amount of beautiful production and songwriting here! It sounds like a combo of U2 and early Radiohead just mixed and produced to perfection, but it doesn’t exactly feel sanitized. Towards the end of the record things begin to mesh together and feel like they overstated their welcome, yet the album isn’t that long. I’d say I can respect the ability but it lands fairly middle of the road for me. Shiver rips tho and Yellows melody is beautifully classic, (added that to the playlist)

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Yellow is okay Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Certified classic

Ok but bit bland

Not bad. All the songs sound very same-same.

Coldplay of old is not as bad as their detractors say, but it’s still only ok. I’ve never understood the comparison to Radiohead, but I see how Parachutes sounds like the Bends era Radiohead. Trouble, Sparks, and Yellow are great songs.

Good to revisit this 24 years after I bought it then first played it in the kitchen at Crossbrooks! Listening in a different house and kitchen I'm thinking of so much that has happened since then. 'Don't Panic' is still a great opener and probably my favourite track on the album. 'Trouble' was the first Coldplay track I heard and the reason I bought this album. It still sounds good, very accomplished for an early single. The same could be said of most of this, especially for a debut album. Overall it didn't grab me though, somehow the emotion isn't quite genuine, maybe too calculated, too smooth. I guess that's why I haven't played it for 10 years or more.

Another band with a great debut album that just didn't keep the sound up as they got more popular.

# 274 : This is a solid musical album. Personally this is my favourite Coldplay album. Trails off a bit in the second half with fillers and very generic. Favourite Track : Don't Panic

Nice but a bit dull

Whatever.

Not bad

Underwhelming considering the hype around them

ekkert sérstakt. lélegur útvarpshaus, miðlungs bukklígaul.

Better than their second album. To me they’re a blend of U2 and Radiohead. At times, it’s great. Other times, it’s what you would expect from a U2/Radiohead baby.

This is a OK album, some good tracks but nothing stand out. I don't understand how they became a global phenomenon, even with some singles like Yellow and In My Place

With distance and listening to again it’s really not that great… quite MOR, though who am I to know as judging by the Glastonbury crowds this weekend I’m in the minority with this view….

Nice enough. I don't really see the Radiohead comparisons.

Suprisingly decent. Tracks #1-5 in particular are really good. Don’t care much for the other half though.

Brought this when it came out. Good but not great debut album

I used to dog on these guys, but they’re honestly pretty good.

A classic album but I don't love Coldplay as much as I thought

Honestly I'm kind of tired of Coldplay, their music has been played so often that it seems less special. That being said, it's still not bad, and "Yellow" especially is a good song.

Pretty cool sound for 2000. Kinda Wilco-meets-Police vibes

Parachutes Listened to this a fair amount when it came out. I’m finding that this is actually quite tricky to think about and to rate. Is it good on its own merits, or is it good because it’s better than what they became, is it actually quite boring but because what they became is so boring it stands out? It’s probably a mix; some good stuff, better than what follows but also a fair bit of dull stuff. I much much prefer his vocals on this to AROBTTH, they sound good, more rough edges but more weight and heft. There’s some great bass playing throughout as well. The guitar playing is interesting, it sounded quite different to the fag end of Britpop’s overdriven style, more textural and subtle, and there are some lovely moments but it feels very U2 in places. I can see why it gets compared to Bends era Radiohead, but Johnny Greenwood is in a different league. Undoubtedly there are some excellent songs, Shiver, Spies, Yellow, Everything’ Not Lost, but the rest of it, while not offensively bad (apart from Sparks, which is the worst kind of Radio 2 sub Bridget Jones soundtrack beige pap), is pretty uninspiring middle of the road indie pop. I’ll go 3, if it came on I’d not turn it off, but I’m unlikely to seek it out deliberately. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

A well produced pleasant listen, but I get zero emotional jolt from this one. Def consider this background music.

This is probably Coldplay at their best, but it's still just Coldplay.

Yellow is a classic track and quite nostalgic. The rest is a bit slow for me to get into. A nice rainy day album, but not something that makes me want to move

A fine album. But uneven.

I like Yellow but the rest of this album is low-key boring

decent debut, songs still get tons of airplay

Not gonna lie, I thought I would enjoy this album more than I actually did. I've never really listened to Coldplay outside their radio hits, and let me tell ya...the radio hits are the only songs worth listening to. The lead singer's voice gets slightly annoying with his constant higher pitched swings and to be honest, I expected more intricacy/production value for an album from one of the world's most popular bands. That being said, the album wasn't terrible, but wouldn't listen to it again.

It’ll only get worse with time

a couple okay songs. overall it was a boring album.

I loved this album when I was a preteen - it is sad, but beautiful. I wish Coldplay stuck to making this type of music (I don’t care for their arena rock albums and hate hearing their songs in commercials).

Solid debut, some genuinely good songs like "Everything Is Not Lost" and "Yellow" always makes me smile. Pretty sucky that people have basically review bombed this based on their unbridled hate of the band now

Post-britpop, pop rock. Pretty middling album that has some really high highs, but then everything else is just kinda forgettable. At its best, it is bittersweet, lush, soothing. Pretty great songs in Sparks, Yellow, and Trouble, with some other good ones. Not a whole lot to write home about for me though. It's overall just good. Nothing more nothing less. Most likely won't revisit. Light 3.5/5

🗣️

This album is a pleasant mellow listen for the most part. Some tracks, like Yellow, are great while others aren't as good. Overall the album is fine. It gives a sneak peak of what would come on their next album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, which in my opinion is their best.

Think the obvious point of comparison is Radiohead here, though there's obvious differences. Coldplay aren't as grandiose, especially here on their debut, and they wouldn't ever really land that further down the line either. The guitar work reminds me heavily of U2, where it works to be more of an aura or feeling than it does anything super present. Guess you could compare that to Johnny Marr as well, though significantly more demure. It's fine, it's pleasant, just a little boring, and I might even side with just sticking to "A Rush of Blood..." on this list. Favorite tracks: "Spies", "High Speed"

I kind of like Don’t Panic, Yellow, and Parachutes; I almost like Trouble

While I know some of the songs (the singles?) - Yellow, Trouble, Don't Panic - the rest haven't struck me as being particularly memorable. They are fine, and I know Coldplay are popular, but aside from the songs I know, the album is - to my taste - a bit 'meh'...

you know how I know your gay? You liked this album.3 stars

I really like Coldplay so there may be some bias in here. I enjoy that this has a bit of an unplugged sound compared to their more recent stuff. Very solid indie rock. The fact that this came out in 2000 makes me think that this album influenced a lot of the '00s indie. Overall though, while it is a very solid album, there weren't too many standouts. Nothing about this album blew me away, especially since I'm fairly familiar with their catalog so I know they have better albums. High 3 :)

Good background music.

The instruments sound gorgeous, beautiful orchestration too. Sounds really rich. Chris's voice is a bit grating. Can't really tell the songs apart, a few moments are gorgeous but songs go on a bit too long. 3.5

Did not know there were so many people who don’t like cold play. Add one more

ruhiger als gedacht

Love this album

Don't Panic: Instantly transported to 2004 watching Garden State (A movie now criminally attacked and disregarded). Something about the melancholy progression and arrangement spliced with "We live in a beautiful world" reminding us to find the beauty in all things, even those that are sad, unknown or scary. I can't separate my 16 year old self from this song and for that I will likely always love this song even if I'm not an avid Coldplay fan. This is a special one, with 5% of the listens as Yellow but such a deeper feeling. This song is a portal to that mystical part of our soul that always urns for more. Shiver:

First half is good. 2nd half is eh. Ez 3.5

idc soft 3 radiohead sounding ass

Less gay radiohead. 3.5

He whines a lot... But Yellow is a great and easy song to play on guitar :)

You can hear so much Bends/OKC Radiohead influence here, especially in the guitar tone late in the album. They really could have become a much more interesting band than they ultimately did

Having never listened to this album all the way through before, I was inclined to distrust snowman and ignore any potential Radiohead influence. But, yeah, it's all over this album lol. Somehow the conversion of mid-late 90s Radiohead to a more appealing pop sound generally works for me though even if OK Computer doesn't. Take it up with Thom's depression. I don't know.

Never really listened to Coldplay before. Nice album. Not a 4 but probably better than a 3

The most disappointing Radiohead album I've listened to.

Nostalgic album, if a little pedestrian.

Great album! Lots more sadboi vibes here than the later Coldplay stuff. Great hits and decent all the way through.

This will be my first listen to a Coldplay album...will it be music by bed-wetters for bed-wetters? It's wasn't all that bad, TBF.

I’m not a Coldplay fan. I understand the mass appeal and rise to stardom on the backs of this well structured album. The hidden track is a nice touch from a somewhat bygone era. I like the opening track.

Coldplay came into this world fully formed as stadium rockers. I enjoyed this at the time and it's still got it's charms, despite the sometimes cloying earnestness and naivety here

Nice cover!

Great album, takes you back to a time when Coldplay really felt as the "next big thing". The first half of the record is just wonderful, but things get duller right after "Trouble".

I’ve heard a these singles and overall was not bad. Challenge was the bias I had towards Coldplay

YouTube shorts-core

Fine songs but don't know why they got so big.

Although not my favorite band, you can't deny the catchyness of their songs.

It was okay. There were points where it veered toward being irritating, but I don’t think it ever got quite bad enough to warrant a 2. There’s a certain early 2000s nostalgia.

Good debut from a low key band, excited to see what they do next

Nice album. Good representation of Coldplays style. Nothing too exciting but solid.

First listen Saved 4/10 Top track: Shiver

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background I mean, I didn't hate it. I was actually expecting to hate it.

obviously nothing special, but it's a cohesive, decently enjoyable album.

Look at the stars, see how they shine for you. Here's a three star review.

I've been in a mellow mood lately, but even this is a bit much. Passable.

some nice songs

Kind of a bad Radiohead album but some good tracks

The influential debut which began that bedwetter indie genre. Delicate and lovely at times. I don't think it breaks new ground. It's a nice thing even though it had its haters.

I'm in the crowd that didn't hate Coldplay from the start. This album is fine - I remember lumping it along with Travis, Doves, and Elbow in that smart Brit indie vein. I thought Doves would be the bigger success and Elbow the most interesting. Didn't expect to see Coldplay rule the world. A Rush of Blood to the Head is better but after that ... break out the pitchforks.

It is a little low energy for me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a nice slow, sad song, but an entire album of them is a bit much.

The first step on the road to 18-month residencies as Wembley Stadium. The template is established here: sensitively-crafted songs allied to soaring, U2-like playing. "Yellow" is merely the first of many highlights to follow in future releases.

Still establishing the sound that defined their later albums, but the sparkle of that potential are audible.

I mean, look. I think Coldplay gets a lot of unwarranted flack. I actually find them to be one of the more creative, interesting bands of the last twenty years. Chris Martin is a good songwriter, and the band has talent at each instrument. That being said... Having actually already listened to their entire discography before, I was surprised at how little of this album I remembered. In fact I think I really only remembered "Shiver" and "Yellow," the two bigger songs from this album. It's fine. A little boring, a little samey song to song. It's a debut, so I can cut them some slack, especially knowing how much better, how much more intricate they get and how they expand their sound. But as is, this is a fine if not bland debut that is just alright. Three stars. Standout tracks: "Shiver,"Spies," " Everything is Not Lost"

You know when you have a preconceived notion about an artist? Thats what I had with Coldplay. Then within the first 10 seconds of the first song, I was thinking maybe I was wrong. The song kicked in and I thought this is way different than I imagined. However, by the time I got to the end my pre listen thoughts were confirmed. Slowly, repetitive and lacking anything to consider this “rock”.

Beetje generic, niet fantastisch, wel priem

A solid debut album of mostly power ballads. "Yellow" and "Trouble" are the highlights, everything else kind of meanders around the same ideas. Passable, but not really inspiring either. More bearable and accessible than Radiohead or other Brit Pop. Well engineered and produced.

Solid album.

Solid album with some good tracks. Very melancholy.

Given their trajectory, it’s easy to forget that Coldplay were initially a decent alternative band, blending soft and space/atmospheric rock elements. The first few songs are enjoyable and have some nice guitar work. Chris Martin can hit a good falsetto. The album sounds really clear and smooth, it’s produced well. My interest waxes and wanes throughout. High Speed sounds like it could be a Radiohead jaint. It’s decent music, but they have no edge at all. Liked it more than I thought, but also nothing that’s leaving a major impact on me.

Quite nice. That's it.

its ok

Blah all the way down, started as they meant to go on. Well written elevator music.

Für mich das wichtigste und beste Album, Indie Rock, melodisch, rhythmisch, entspannend

Classic. But forgettable.

Good, not all that interesting

Melancholy but beautiful. First half is really strong, albeit a bit cheesy, especially in the context of Coldplay's reputation. However this is definitely a stronger entry for them, especially the well-known singles. Second half becomes a little boring and repetitive.

Balādes. :)

Not a huge Coldplay fan. But can’t deny great songs. Accompanied with well thought out lyrics and on the whole well produced. You don’t have to get something to appreciate it.

Pretty good.

This wasn't bad - It was actually a nice way to start the day. A good 1st album.

In 2000 there were any number of bands recording catchy pop rock produced in the style of ok computer. I don’t really find that parachutes make Coldplay stand out from that crowd. The album is just perfectly fine. Yellow is good, and probably made their career. 2.5

Not a huge fan - a bit too "stadium pop". That being said, they're musically pretty decent. Don't Panic - Good opening track. Shiver - Eh, No. Spies - so so. Sparks - No. (Awful moany) Yellow - overplayed pop. Trouble - ok enough The rest is more of the same. In the middle, like their music, is a 3

Just another cold Play album. Decent but not crazy about it

mostly 🥱, ive never understood the coldplay hype. i did like Everything’s Not Lost

I'd never really listened to it completely. Nice

Really good
