Reviews (page 9 of 14)

It was okay. Very Delilah coded.

6/10. Very mid record. Not great, not terrible.

Coldplay comes out hot with their Parachutes debut. Mellow, thought-provoking, and well put together. All songs are good, couple big hits. L = (2.75*s) Above average, kinda slow through the middle, but no skippers. J = (2.75*s) Didn’t know Yellow was from their first album. Have they ever topped it?

Pretty solid debut from Coldplay. I enjoyed this album much more than I thought I would. Parachutes is a softy but really good. I remember not liking "Yellow" when it first hit MTv but after I saw it with the MI cousins during a night of family festivities, I was changed. It is actually a beautiful song. The band may have tapered off after this hit record but credit is due to them for breaking in to the music market with Parachutes...3.38 stars.

After years of being a decent Coldplay fan I had started to become underwhelmed with them over the past couple of albums. Their hits had been excessively overplayed and their schtick had seemingly started to wear thin. Their albums had become less and less interesting as the seemingly pushed for a pop rock sound. Despite being an OK album, A Rush Of Blood was a bit of a lackluster listen on my last revisit, so I went in with tempered expectations for Parachutes. I was pretty pleased how well Parachutes held up. It's a little simpler and holds a little more of the indie rock vibe that made Coldplay more alluring earlier in their career. Parachutes has a bit more of a glum alt rock sound that maybe worked better earlier in their career when it still felt fresh. Perhaps it was feeling more and more thin as they aged and continued to release albums in their signature vein. While Chris Martin is mostly an admirable frontman, his act had started to feel packaged as he became an aging rocker and more of a pop culture icon. All in all I was a mostly OK with Parachutes on the revisit. 3.10 stars

I enjoyed this album even though I don't typically listen to Coldplay. "Yellow" actually fits well in the series and lead up to it as opposed to playing it any other time.

easy listening

Pas ultra fan de coldplay mais c ok

I like the band, but the singer's voice gets old on a whole album

Listening to this album feels exactly how early twenties sound. Mainly confused and sad. A bit tiring to listen to on the road.

Tranquilo y suave a excepción de una dos que 3 canciones que destacan y se nota el sentimiento

I always thought of Coldplay as more of a “just the hits” band, and hadn’t listened to them much apart from Mylo Xyloto and Rush of Blood to the Head, both of which my parents had on CD while I was growing up, so I am very familiar with those albums. Parachutes pleasantly surprised me. Don’t Panic was a pretty great starter (I’m starting to sense a theme with these that I love the first track haha). Shiver was very quintessentially Coldplay, and while I didn’t love Spies the end was quite good and it fit the album quite well. Sparks was alright but not my type of song. Not gonna really comment on Yellow or Trouble, as they’re hits for a reason and are songs I very much enjoy. I’d say Trouble is probably my least favourite outta the two, but it’s a close call. Parachutes itself was a serviceable intermission! Going into High speed, it was an interesting sound. I didn’t love it, but I can appreciate it. The two last songs of the album blended together a bit for me, but Everything’s not Lost + life is for living did close the album nicely for me! Overall, a 3.5/5 ⭐️, might increase if I came back to it and gave it more listens. I do genuinely love a lot of early Coldplay, and saw them in 2017 which was an incredible show! Favourites: Yellow, Trouble, Don’t Panic Least Favourites: Spies 4/1089

Some enjoyable songs but overall too melancholy for my taste, i don't know when i'd listen to it in everyday life

about 12 years ago I saw someone write something like "saying Coldplay is your favourite band is like saying your favourite colour is beige" and oh boy ! that's stuck with me Honourable mention to the kiss cam at that Coldplay concert catching that cheating CEO I hadn't heard most of this, and I didn't mind listening to this at all. I also liked the bonus track, which I'd obviously never heard. Sure, it's a bit beige, a bit dull, but that's fine Songs added to playlist: - Sparks - Yellow

I noticed there is a very popular song on here, I liked this album. Not the VERY best but I did enjoy it

Disjointed imo however has some really nice sonnets.

Looking back, it’s great that Parachutes was their debut album. Still, they just doesn’t quite click with me. What surprises me most is that my reaction hasn’t really changed at all over the past 25 years.

I hated this album when it came out, thinking it was a bland dumbing-down of somewhat more interesting music. Now I had a chance to revise my youthful opinion. Turns out the opening run of tracks is full of lovely and clever (albeit subtle) songwriting and production choices. "Don't Panic" is gorgeous, "Shiver" pulses with emotion, and "Spies" makes a convincing case that this lite version of sounds that were popular at the time could be the better one. Most surprisingly for me, I now think the real secret to the enduring appeal of "Yellow" is that it's more or less perfect. I should also mention that after several albums in a row of wall-to-wall misogyny, it was BEAUTIFUL to hear cheesy love lyrics without any hint of condescension, irony or secret darkness. He sounds like the boy your mom wants you to marry. Plus I honestly envy his voice. Sadly, the rest of the album, much like the rest of Coldplay's career, treads water in an abyss of the completely forgettable. It doesn't feel bad, necessarily, just doesn't feel like much of anything at all, and all the nifty choices that filled the opening half simply vanish. It's like if "Music for Airports" was unintentional. I'm feeling generous today and the re-listen actually surprised me, so 3 stars.

👍🏻

Good, boring

3,5+ Don’t panic Spies Sparks Trouble High Speed

This is probably the most I'll ever enjoy a Coldplay album. Sure, it's still kind of melodramatic and a bit sterile. But the emotional hugeness isn't quite as over-exaggerated, and the proceedings all feel a bit more subtle. The songs are pretty consistently good too. Shiver, Yellow, Sparks, and Trouble are all pretty enjoyable hits from this album. I also enjoy Spies and We Never Change quite a bit. I don't think Coldplay has ever worn their pop-rock sound better since. Here, there are times where they kind of sound like you sanded down pre-Kid A Radiohead, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Even if I still don't find Coldplay particularly interesting, I did sort of enjoy this pretty consistently. Even if there isn't a lot here I think I'll be coming back to, Parachutes works as a whole that Coldplay delivers.

Unknown band to me but surprisingly interesting. A good album.

Inte mitt Coldplay. Varför denna plattan, det måste finnas flera bättre. En trea

Don’t rlly like Coldplay but it was an enjoyable listen

Feels like a boring version of U2 to me. 3 stars or C.

This album flowed nicely. I like it enough to listen again, but not enough to go out of my way.

I dont get the hate for this album, the highs are pretty high. Sadly the lows are pretty low.

not a huge coldplay fan but i was surprised by how easy this album was to get into, not something id listen to every day probably but very nice and relaxing! favs! - shiver - spies - sparks

Il suono mi piace molto ma è davvero tutto uguale

Sparks, Yellow, Trouble. That’s a pretty good three song punch right there. The rest of the album seems kind of eh.

I expected Sparks to be a lot better based on it's stream count, but it was far too emo for me. Yellow is undeniably a great tune, but for my money the best song on the album is Trouble. Overall a little to dour for me.

Credit to Coldplay that this is a much better album than I anticipated. Ideally I’d give it more than a 3, but not quite a 4. I liked it more than most but I didn’t love it. Maybe my ratings are too harsh? Oh well, gotta be consistent now

pretty good

Ehhhhhh I do sorta like coldplay? But maybe only here and there, because this album wasn't really doing it for me. Fine in general though. Yellow still doesn't really do anything special for me :p I liked Don't Panic and Spies in particular

It's a funny feeling to get this one on the challenge, a rare band where their big rise and fall happened during my younger years, where I was aware they were a popular band but never really engaged beyond that. Listening to 'Yellow' today was a genuine nostalgia hit. As full album experience, though, they have one mood and they stick to it to a fault. I was vibing hard at first, already considering a 4 or 5, but by the halfway mark the sound actually started to wear me down. It doesn't help that although the songwriting is undeniably pretty, the instrumentation is disappointingly bland -- that's one point where Radiohead is miles ahead in (though I don't love the comparison). Standouts: Don't Panic • Shiver • Yellow

Average

middle kinda boring but that beginning and end is great

2000s Coldplay = eating grilled chicken breast and unseasoned potatoes. 2010-2020s Coldplay = eating dog turd covered in glitter. (I don’t mind this but can’t understand why anyone would choose to listen to it when The Bends exists)

Some great, some good, some meh

As a confirmed Coldplay hater this is them at their least pompous and mediocre. Some good tunes and attempts to be Jeff Buckley. They genuinely could have been more interesting, and less successful, following this path.

Not too bad considering it's Coldplay.

Nondescript Beatles cover

Mid-tempo rockers, turning the page on the quiet-loud-quiet from the grunge era, adding their touches of Radiohead influence and brit-pop bombastic singing, this album is ok, if not a bit repetitive. Seems to occupy a safe space in rock-n-roll here, nothing "edgy" or similar. Songs are decent and easy sing-a-longs (albeit not Beatles sing-a-long good).

Quite bland and depressing. Might be good for an autumn evening with a book.

I expected this to be a 2. I had A Rush Of Blood Tor The Head previously in this list and whilst it was good for what it was, it wasn’t for me. This isn’t really my thing either but there is no denying the might of some of the songs here. As a result, I’m giving it a three.

M'ha agradat molt més del que esperava la veritat. Tot i això hi ha cançons que sobren. Ns q més puc dir

Pleasant enough but pretty bland.

I can't understand how Coldplay manage to engender so much emotion in either direction. I certainly don't love them but I also don't have enough spare energy to dislike them too much either. Fine to play in the background and not be offended by.

Nice try. Still don't like but understand why it got acclaim.

Coldplay are old souls at heart, for good and for bad: tho their genre is alt, indie, or whichever white moniker you prefer, they share more w/ soft rock from the late 60s and 70s than they do w/ R.E.M. thru Pavement, etc. That is, Chris Martin and co. are essentially a folk-rock group, but they're not all that folksy or homespun: Chris is too graceful a singer to have the required rasp of a folk artist, and the music is gossamer rather than knowing or tender. What really drags them into the mud of mediocrity are their philosophical pretensions, which are even more boring than Radiohead's: 'That the spies hide out in every corner / But you can't touch them, no'; 'We've been living life inside of a bubble.' 'Yellow,' like 'The Scientist,' is a classic, tho.

I am shocked that I have never heard Parachutes in full before, despite being raised on Coldplay as a child. It is also so blatantly clear that Coldplay wanted to walk in the shadows of Radiohead, and I don't mind that by any means but it does make this album feel a bit plain in terms of sound. There are some excellent songs here like Sparks and Yellow, but everything else felt like a watered down and more accessible version of already existing Radiohead tracks. This album had a consistent sound and I can definitely give it that, but the writing here with the exception of the highlights was pretty basic and not really all too noteworthy. I can get why someone would adore this album for how accessible it makes the depressing themes, but just listen to Radiohead and they will do it 10 times better if not more. Maybe A Rush of Blood to the Head will be different, but for now I am not super impressed with what Coldplay has to offer here.

This was easy listening music compared to yesterday’s album. I was actually looking forward to listening to something a little more mellow, so I decided to listen to it on my commute into the office. I figured it would calm me as I drove through the lovely streets of downtown Springfield. But what it really did was almost put me to sleep at the wheel. Jesus Christ how does anyone stay awake listening to this album? I’ve always liked Yellow, but I don’t need 40 minutes of that same thing. Giving it a 3 because I can’t justify giving it a 2 after using that rating yesterday. It’s not terrible, it’s just boring. Yawn.

Know how I know you’re gay?? Ok. Bad joke. Truth be told, I’ve always enjoyed Coldplay’s music (even despite the stereotype). This debut album from the band is more somber in nature and is not a collection of their more popular songs (with the exception of Yellow which was wildly famous),but the music is good, the vocals hit, and the arrangement is well put together IMO. A talented group of musicians who deserve the recognition they received after rolling out this album to the world.

Fint album. Hørte på albumet mens jeg leste The Count of Monte Cristo, var avslappende og passet bra med lesingen. Tror nok sparks er favoritten.

Pleasant enough but I get why they get all the hate. 2.5 rounded up for the easy listening.

As their debut album it’s listenable and has a few good songs but it all becomes a bit like wallpaper anthems in the end and sounds very samey. Staggering that they have > 93 million monthly listeners on Spotify!! Guess there’s no accounting for taste 😝

Never been a fan, but if you have to give me pop, at least they have some real instruments. Liked Trouble. Reminded me a bit of Pink Floyd (if I may) 7/10

I liked how one song sounded math rockish. Some tracks are solid. Coldplay is very hit or miss for me in general. But definitely one of the better pop albums out there.

2.5 RYM

It's Coldplay in all its early glory. It's not as bad as everyone dunks on. It's lamer Radiohead but better than most other lame Radiohead impersonators. And it's better than their modern form.

This is the most Coldplay I've ever listened to at once. When I first discovered them, it was in the viva la vida era and I was up in arms because they had taken a song from the legendary Joe Satriani. I suppose he's moved on so I should too. But I'm surprised at the amount of substance I've found here, paired with a few strange lyric choices. Overall I enjoyed it.

Just ok.

Melhor do álbum: "Trouble". Pior do álbum: "We Never Change".

It's really telling how different this album and the next one are in all of Coldplay's discography. This feels very small, almost intimate, compared to A Rush of Blood. I don't like it as much! Even the louder tracks like Shiver and Yellow just don't pack any punch. I like loud and ambitious coldplay, so Rush and Viva la Vida are much more my shit. This just feels kind of dated. 3

--Don't Panic...I like the guitars here --Shiver...I'm liking the more rock-forward feel of this album over Rush of Blood to the Head --Spies...pleasant --Sparks...not a lot of, well, sparks to this one --Yellow...simple but effective --Trouble...nice piano-centric track --Parachutes...okay --High Speed...kind of twiddling their thumbs here --We Never Change...dreamy. nice vibes --Everything's Not Lost...a jazzy number for the closer. Not bad but a little long

I've always thought that Coldplay was Just Fine, but nothing to get too excited about, but now that I see the intense hatred some people have over them, I'm tempted to rate them higher, because I don't think they deserve that either. Nope, still a 3.

Good, well produced.

Great album that started a pop rock trend in the early 2000s.

Some great songs on here a very high 3

I really liked the first song, then the next few had potential but felt a little cringy. Now im on Trouble and man what a piano hook, gotta save that for sure. Just finished the album, i liked the last few tracks a bit more when he quit whingin' about a lass so much and took it to more universal themes. The first half was good musically but lyrically he was losing me with the same ol' self pity simpery. Standouts: dont panic, trouble, and everything's not lost. The last song wasnt amazing amazing but I could see it cheering me up when im in a dour mood

Great stuff

I first heard this album played in its entirety in a bar. I couldn't get over how much it reminded me of a less challenging Jeff Buckley. It sounded pretty good in the background drinking a few beers on a Sunday afternoon. not quite the way this band sound today. Hard to argue with the quality of this album. 3.5.

Definitely a lot of nostalgia for some of the songs on this album, but as a whole it dragged. Just too many similar songs for me. I think a lot of them could be good on a playlist with a specific mood, but I wouldn’t want to listen to the album again. Will always be fond of the songs I already knew though. Fav song: Yellow Least fav: Sparks

Warm, and with a nostalgic millennium level of underproduced production value.

I used to slam on Coldplay as their singles just don't do much for me. I will say as a whole the album does stand up and I do get why people enjoy it.

Not exactly music to dance to.

Overall okay, but “Yellow” is the only real standout for me—probably because it’s the one I’ve heard most and it carries some era-specific nostalgia. Parachutes (2000) sits in that late-’90s/early-’00s post-Britpop, soft-focus lane—acoustic guitars, gentle tempos, intimate vocals. “Yellow” pops thanks to its instantly memorable guitar motif and chorus. Elsewhere, “Shiver” has some lift, “Trouble” is a tidy piano ballad, and “Don’t Panic” sets a mellow tone, but much of the album blends into mid-tempo sameness and safety. As a debut it’s cohesive and easy to live with, just not packed with “wow” moments beyond “Yellow.”

A good debut from a cool-ish band. Nicely recorded. Not my thing I think.

Music to be depressed to.

Sympa mais toujours un peu pareil

Really good. Is it something I would listen to again and again? No. But it's good.

Didn’t change my mind about Coldplay but Martin is very talented.

Better than the other Coldplay album on here I guess. Hopefully no more

Entspannend. Sehr gut für entspannte Abende/Wache

Suits an overcast day. I do like it just don't tell anyone😆

It's OK. It certainly has a style, and the whole album flows together, but I do wonder if you took out the gaps would you even realize it wasn't just one long song.

A nice album but felt pretty pedestrian. Not much going on but nothing too gash behind it.

Great debut album! 4 out of 10 songs are super famous. They expressed a variety of emotions with simple melodies. It's relaxing listening to them, but in general quite bland for me.

I used to like this album a lot back in high school. It's just okay.

I listened to this a lot when it came out. It's pretty good but I do not listen to it anymore

5/5/10

Well crafted, but it's not going to blow your mind

Listen, I know Coldplay is whack. I think they're whack. Honestly, I cringe most of the time they come on the damn radio. HOWEVA, I'll say that I recall this at the time, and it's pretty good. When they were basically aping Bends-era Radiohead, they were a pretty solid band. Sad boy rock? That I can get down with. "Yellow"? Great song. "Don't Panic"? Great song. Are there boring songs, like "Spies"? Yes, very much so. But this isn't some Maroon 5-ass pop slog, it's an actual-ass album of pretty good sad rock. I'll admit I dug it. Spotify then rolled over into an acoustic version of Deftones' "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)", a GREAT sad rock song, which is, IMO, an endorsement of the Coldplay album as well.

Chill album with some classics. I’d give it a 3.5

Listened to this twice, initially felt solid about a 3 but it grew on me. Coldplay frustrates me because their stuff I like, I like really like a lot but so much of it is forgettable.

Bit bland, kinda predictable, easy background listening

it's alright. i liked high speed and everything's lost + hidden track. not for me but i see why someone would like it. I don't like the voice but im picky.

A couple good ones

Good genre of music. Not huge fan of the album.

Man... I want this to be higher. Maybe it's the day? Great album, but too low key.

the title song isn't even a minute long. come on guys. Coldplay is kind of mid (i mean that literally) and most unforgiveably, they're British but not even the fun kind of British. Still, it takes a certain mood but there's something about listening to this album at home while it's raining outside and you're thinking about your feelings.

Some great tracks, but lots of average ones as well

Is Chris Martin British? 3.5/5

I figured that Coldplay's music would be, from the very beginning, trite and sappy. It is. What I didn't count on were tracks like "We Never Change" and "Everything's Not Lost", both of which are nicely constructed songs that don't go over the top.

platonic ideal of a 7/10 album. this makes for a hard time rating it on a 5 point scale. quite the conundrum. deserves to be one of the 1001? yea i spose

It’s objectively good I suppose but I can’t get into it. Sorry to these men.

Helluva debut album....might say I prefer this to 'A Rush of Blood to the Head.' 3.5 stars

It's a nice, sweet, easy-listening album. But also, it does not really challenge the listener, or push boundaries, or do something that outshines its contemporaries. In fact, it can sometimes feel a bit derivative.

Genitals are kind of interesting, otherwise the human race would have died out. But they’re only kind of interesting. If your songs are only saying “I have this one particular type of genital!” then they’re pretty boring. Like Led Zeppelin. Their songs are definitely about the fact that they have dicks, but they’re not only about that. They are also about wizards and Vikings and drugs and The Lord of the Rings. If Led Zeppelin’s songs were just about the fact that they have dicks then they’d be Poison. With Coldplay, their songs are kind of pretty, slightly catchy and totally inoffensive. But their songs’ only subject matter is the fact that all of the members of the band have no genitals, and that’s boring. Making all your songs about not having a dick is no more interesting than making your songs about the fact that you have a dick. I can’t listen to 41 minutes of “I’m a eunuch. I have no genitals whatsoever. I’m completely smooth down there like a Ken doll!” Mix it up. Throw in a line about a wizard or something.

Decent

Bangkok 2000. Done my teaching for the day. Hanging out at the multiplex waiting for a movie and bought this. Listened to it a bit and not much since. Wonder what became of them

I do like the last song, which was a good plan on their part. Otherwise if feel that most everything is, if not lost, then at least wouldn’t be missed. It’s a bit of a cut-rate U2 sitch (or I just might be a “things-were-better-in-my-day” fuddydud…), because they’re clearly a talented bunch but the songwriting leaves me full of breath.

Oh Coldplay- when this was released there was no baggage with this band and I actually enjoyed my second copy that I picked up somewhere in Calgary. I actually still Listen to sparks quite a bit. Not a bad album overall all things considered.

I don't like Coldplay much as an albums band but if they only released singles, I would call them near great. Not a bad album by any means but jarring as you have a couple great songs & 8 or whatever OK songs. I get why they are a huge band but other than a Greatest Hits collection I don't need much more from Coldplay. I Am Curious (yellow)

I don’t know why I really was avoiding this album in the history. I’d just keep imagining Coldplay songs I know and it would make me feel tired and bored without even pressing PLAY. Honestly, though, it wasn’t so bad. Pleasant enough and all that.

Was expecting to hate this way more than I did. It’s mostly harmless, like a bald hedgehog

I prefer Coldplay a little more punchy; Viva La Vida is one of my all-time favorite albums. This record is a lot more low-key, sometimes to its detriment, albeit with some exceptions- "Yellow" and "Don't Panic" are excellent.

This was the first full Coldplay album I’ve ever listened to, and it was pretty good. It makes me wanna dive into their discography more. I knew yellow and parachutes, but was very interested to discover what else this album had to offer and I was pleasantly surprised. If you like soft rock, this album is right up your alley.

I'm not gonna trash it because it's Coldplay. I gave it an honest listen, and enjoyed it more than I expected. It's still Coldplay tho, but slightly above expectations. Slightly. Dude loves singing in his falsetto

Didn't realize how many of these songs I knew and that they were Coldplay? It's a good, if not one-note album.

I liked this more than I expected. I'm not a big fan of the giant arena rock stylings of the other Coldplay records that I've heard. Those records also seem super derivative. This is pretty in places, and has some emotion, and while I'm not sold on the quality of the band as an entity, it's a good outing. Much better than I thought it was going to be. Lyrics are definitely trite in places... that to me is the weakest thing going on in this record.

It’s inoffensive and slightly uninspired Dad Rock but I can’t deny there are some catchy songs here. A 3 feels like the perfect score for Coldplay.

BEST SONGS: - Shiver - Trouble

J'ai toujours mélangé Coldplay et Radiohead dans ma tête. Maintenant je connais la différence : Coldplay c'est mieux.

Well, I think there are better Coldplay albums out there, so maybe this one could have been left off, but it was still good in a Coldplay way.

Музыка: 8/10 Разнообразие: 6/10 Тематика и вайб: 7/10 Цепляемость (отдельные песни зашли): 5/10 Реиграбельность (можно ли рандомно врубить на фон): 7/10 Итог: 6.6

Don't forget these before Skydiving.

Just an album you would listen to with your mistress.

Bit sad

Decent album. Songs you know.

A little Chris Martin goes a long way for me. Coldplay are undeniably musical, production quality is good on this one, even the songwriting is good. It's just kind of boring.

Dreary enough, Chris Martin puts years on me. I’d say at the time it was released it was a nice change from all the boy band stuff. Shiver’s probs the best song on there for me.

A really strong first half but it really dips near the end. just like the bands trajectory.

Wow are all Coldplay albums this melancholy? Didn't hate it but kind of needed a hug after listening!

Some good songs on here but quite a bit was a bit too long and boring and overall it was just decent. 3 stars

I kinda wanna listen to Jeff Buckley now.

Very heartfelt and melancholy album. Felt like the atmosphere at the end of summer or saying goodbye to everyone after high school graduation. Not quite my genre, but it was enjoyable.

Ganske behagelig å høre på.

Me gustó, muy emotivo y no conocía algunas canciones. 5/10 Yellow 10/10

Really good guitar and bass tones and production. More in the singer/songwriter vain than the rock one which is different than I remembered. A solid record but you get the point 75 percent of the way thru.

Coldplay has always alluded me, as in later years they seemed like they were attempting to find the commercial success of U2, but lacked the “spark” that U2 had (at least up until the 2000s). I did enjoy this first album, though, as there is a raw emotion to it. Down tempo songs like Spies and Sparks are dripping in Chris Martin’s contrasts between his gruff lower register and falsetto. It’s not polished, which I appreciate. Yellow is a good song with pop appeal, and Trouble is a popular song though I don’t particular care for it (overhyped for too long). I think my favorite track on the album may be High Speed as the musical and vocal interpretation was fresh, and the song is anything other than what the title implies. Of their work, I may like this on best but they still are not a go-to band for me.

Not as bad as the terribleness they made later. Some really enjoyable parts even.

Don’t care much for their later stuff but I liked this album both when it first came out and still now. Most songs are above average and there’s some great stuff: “shiver” and “sparks” plus the hits “trouble” and “yellow”. They got a lot of flack and are a bit whiney but still deece.

Standout Songs: Shiver Yellow Everything’s Not Lost

A part quelques titres (hits), l'ensemble est certes beau mais plutôt mou, ce qui ne permet pas de mettre 4 étoiles

Quelques chansons cultes mais globalement assez chiant en fait.

It wasnt as bad as I was expecting . Not keen on his voice though.

This is a crazy debut album, I never realised it was before. Shiver may be one of my new favourite songs. Shiver, Spies, Sparks, Yellow is a crazy track run. It is a pretty mellow album without an uplift though. I wish they stayed with music in this direction rather than the poppy weird music they do now, but also understand bands have to “evolve” as the times do. But we should really bring back the eclectic-ness of the 2000s where popular rock didn’t have to sound like it was written by a five year old.

Helt ok

Heard most of the songs before. It flows well and a quick listen.

Meh. Kinda cheesy. Well produced though.

As someone who wouldn’t go out of their way to listen to Coldplay, I was pleasantly surprised by this album. The RadioHead influences are undeniable, and it is definitely an album I can see myself coming back to.

If it wasn't for the singles and a killer video this would have gone nowhere. What a dull album. Except those three singles. I always thought of them as Radiohead lite, but it's not even that. Its college dude in a corner playing acoustic guitar. When they hit, it's incredible, but man the rest of their stuff is so boring.

Solid, couple of bangers mixed in

All the same

They’re the English Dave Matthews Band: professional and “epic” while sounding, aside from a few hits, bland and forgettable.

I wasn’t able to listen to the whole album. I will over the weekend tho

Coldplay's albums continue to be... mostly alright I think Not the most groundbreaking thing ever but it is the exact kind of pleasant rock you need sometimes. It's comfy, it's emotional, but not to the point of contrivances or anything which, makea me see why they got so big to begin with

It's pleasant enough, but a bit sedate. There was a real Radiohead vs. Coldplay rivalry when I was in high school and college. I'm a huge Radiohead fan and was always on Team Radiohead, to the point where I'd never even listened to this album in its entirety. It really does not sound very much like Radiohead (except for "Spies" at roughly the 3:00 mark, which sounds EXACTLY like the bridge from "Creep", so much so that it must clearly have cribbed from it), and it especially sounds nothing like either of the two very distinct Radiohead CDs bracketing its release. They've got a nice and kind of a "big" sound, more like Oasis, where they just layer on instrument after instrument (always one of the four primary rock instruments, including typically both acoustic and electric guitar) until it sounds absolutely enormous. And that's fine, but they've left out a couple things, including backing vocals (Martin likes to do his own falsetto "oohs" as the lead from time to time) and, with a few exceptions (notably "Sparks", the best track) syncopation. But it's a fine listen.

On the same level as "A Rush Of Blood" (or maybe slightly better, but to be honest, they’re so similar that I have a hard time telling them apart) – pleasant to listen, but ultimately neither very original nor very memorable. Comfy pop-rock that builds (with class and talent) on the legacy of dream pop, shoegaze and a bit of grunge to create something sweet and relaxing, fit for rainy afternoons and long distance bus trips. I enjoy it, but I won’t remember any of it.

Great music in some cases. I just don't like his voice.

This is on the list of 1001 albums I’ve heard too many times. Also, never take a coworker to a Coldplay concert.

This was fine. If it wasn’t so deeply nostalgic for me I might rate it lower but every song is burned into my memory. Coldplay are definitely not for me but this was a fun Friday afternoon time warp back to my childhood.

снова я со своей высочайшей похвалой: намного лучше чем я боялась (не выношу колдплей). слушать я это больше не буду но НЕ отвратительно

This is yet another album that pleasantly surprised me. I've always written off Coldplay as being a bit of a cheesy, soulless pop group, but I really think there's someone deeper here. It was pretty guitar forward and a far-cry from the Coldplay that I've known recently on pop/alt radio. It's very mellow and a bit same-y. Yellow is, of course, a great song, but I don't think I knew anything else off this record. Likely will be something I come back to from time to time when the mood strikes.

Franchement ça va Un petit air d'adolescente dépressive quand même

MOR. We can do better than this, guys.

Another one that has a decent sound but all very similar. I know some of the songs but a whole album is too much.

Obviously a couple of decent tunes, though I may have dropped off, could be useful for future nap times.

Not my favourite of their work, but definitely some solid songs here (Don't Panic, Shiver, Yellow and Trouble)

Often slated as a band, good debut, but just a bit vanilla for my liking

very good

Coldplay...banda de hits.

Everytime Coldplay comes up I try to clear my mind and give them the benefit of the doubt. This is a perfectly listenable album. The first song actually starts quite nicely. I understand that Yellow was a huge hit. I get how people can like Coldplay. I just dont like Chris Martin's voice. When I hear him sing I want to punch him in the throat so that I don't have to listen to him sing anymore. For me this is a 2.5. I will round it up because it is probably not as bad as it sounds to me.

Objetively "good" if you can be arsed to listen to these whiny vocals

Immediate groans when I saw this generated this morning, but I tried to give it as unbiased of a listen as I could and honestly it’s really not bad at all. I’d even go far enough to say it’s pretty decent. Sounds very much like Radiohead with all the rough edges sanded off and polished until it was shiny. Favourite track: High Speed

- Yellow!!! (Is kinda good) - sad-chill vibes -Radiohead? - End of Album ist okay

Já conhecia, mas prestei mais atenção e percebi que Coldplay é muito bom sem sintetizadores, mais melancólico e menos teor pop. Fico triste por eles fazerem sucesso, talvez se fossem medianos em público teriam continuado assim. We never change é minha favorita.

3.5/5. Discount Radiohead. Made the mistake of listening to this at the gym during leg day, made my work out way more painful.

This is the debut album for Coldplay and is well done for a debut. I recall hearing “Yellow” often on the radio when this album was popular. All the songs are ok although not very memorable. I think that a better singer would have been an improvement.

Wow, 2 Coldplay albums? OK, list. I do think this is better than their other album on here, though, or at least more Radioheady. Coldplay are just disappointing to me because I feel like they could be really great, all the pieces are there, but most of the songs fall flat for me (emotionally, musically, lyrically). Clearly other people like them, but I'm not here to grade on popularity or potential!

Pleasant surprise given I generally don't like Coldplay. Don't Panic and Shiver is a good start to the album. Massive OK Computer and Grace influence, though it's not up to the standard of those albums. Yellow is a bit ruined through overplaying for me, Trouble is nice. The non-singles are genrally decent if unremarkable. Album overall has a nice laid back vibe.

I tried to shed any biases I have based on what Coldplay has become and listen to the album as a whole. There are some incredible songs here in my opinion that rise above the derogatory "adult contemporary" label, but I'm sure there are more deserving, less outwardly commercial in their ambitions albums that deserve a spot on the list.

It's just kind of sad. I like a couple songs but they're all kind of the same, and sad.

Very sad and moppy, didn't like it that much.

I don’t know that I’m the biggest fan of Coldplay, but I feel like their music was part of the soundtrack of my adolescence. I recognize a number of the songs from this album, and the ones I don’t pass by in a smooth and inoffensive way. It’s good background noise, but I don’t think I’m going to say I’m converted to a mega fan.

Very acoustic and mellow Coldplay album with my favorite song by them "Yellow". Not as much energy as the follow up album. 3.5/5

Enjoyable to listen to. Nice background music, couple of sweet touching songs. Wouldn’t play it outright.

J - 3/5 Best Track - "Yellow" F - 2/5

c'est sympa coldplay

Coldplay no es un grupo que haya cambiado mucho su sonido en los ultimos 20 años, verdad?

I loved the song Yellow when it came out, and it still brings back nostalgia for my college years… But overall, this album feels pretty sleepy and repetitive – the songs bleed into one another without much change.

Cover 6 Used to love them. I'm over it. Still a good album but I probably won't return to it.

Eran muy buenos en esta epoca, lastima que perdieron la identidad podrian haber sacado muy buenos discos

Nothing revolutionary. decent listen.

I hadn't heard this record in a good 20 years, and I was surprised how many songs I still knew. Good songwriting, good production, good vocals. Kinda loses its energy in the second half.

It’s wild to hear the beginning. Coldplay wasn’t a recording band for long before they recorded their first album. They took their time, but the greatness of what Chris Martin does best is very present on this album. It’s interesting because you can see where Christian guitarist started learning how to play guitar. Probably in their bedroom in 2000 to this album. I think that ignited the sound of the late 2000s to early 2010s era of worship lead guitar lines. I always love seeing a line when it comes to lineage in music. ..and Coldplay is the inspiration for those guitarist and contemplative sad white boys, banging on a piano and I am not mad at it. Favorite song: Yellow, duh 😁

just fine

"Yellow" +1, forgettable music from a simpler time

Pretty much what I expected. Not a big fan of these guys. 3

6.50/10 Creates a hollow atmosphere, but when the whole album is hollow, there just isn't much substance. Overall it just feels like a very safe and un-risky debut. Don't Panic - 7.0 Shiver - 6.7 Spies - 6.3 Sparks - 6.8 Yellow - 7.2 Trouble - 6.4 Parachutes - 6.2 High Speed - 6.5 We Never Change - 5.9 Everything's Not Lost - 6.0

Don’t actually have a problem with Coldplay. Used to be overrated, now overhated, but they’re just fine. And so is this album. Chris Martin does have a twatty voice though. Don’t Panic (8/10) Shiver (5/10) Spies (5/10) Sparks (6/10) Yellow (8/10) Trouble (7/10) Parachutes (N/A) High Speed (6/10) We Never Change (6/10) Everything’s Not Lost (7/10) 6.4/10

This was all filler and one killer. Not a great ratio, but a lot of it (most) was pretty forgettable. It was fine, but if “Yellow” wasn’t on this album, it wouldn’t be on the list and it’s not even that good a song. I did enjoy it, though. 3/5

In various times, I've really enjoyed this album, however on this listen the one-note-ness of it all really came forward.

Mellow and intimate, but feels too one-noted. It's still enjoyable, but doesn’t pack the same punch as some of their other work. Still a good debut album. Best song: Yellow (yes, it's beautiful) Worst song: We Never Change Cover check: Looks like a cozy and safe space

Not as bad as i thought it would be but still rather beige

Great era of Coldplay! I enjoy the overall somber vibe, although it can be a bit repetetive over the course of the 41 minute runtime.

Very pleasant, nostalgic album for me. As much as I enjoyed it, it has very little range. Listen to just a couple of the songs here and you basically get the full album feeling.

The beatles is way better

Good listen.

A few great songs like Yellow, Spies, Trouble and Parachutes. I did feel the album was very repetitive but the general album set a nice background tone for peace

2.5 Where the rubber hits the road. Outside of the singles, esp. "Yellow," the harmonies carry the best songs. However, as an album, this is why we still have a torrent or overearnest, emotionally pleading male singers that everyone thinks are honest. When its honestly dated and derivative.

Over all a well-made album. Some great production and instrumentation. A bit bland for my taste but it was an enjoyable listen.

Sparks Shiver Don’t Panic

Their debut is easily Coldplay's best and there are some very strong moments on this album. My personal favorite is Don't Panic. However most of the album is sentimental and mediocre, which would be the hallmark of their work to come.

Better than last album of their I listened too, quite nice but after all it wasn't anything crazy. Instrumentally the best, the vocalist CAN sing but I am not a big fan of his voice. Still cool.

Very Radiohead-esque. Not I might listen to more of their stuff. It's not as poppy and cliche as I thought it might be.

i so badly wanted to like this more than i did. the production is nice and clean. very straightforward, but nothing wrong with that. there is some pretty good stuff on here! 'yellow,' 'don't panic,' and 'trouble,' are all pretty great! unfortunately a lot of the album is mind-numbingly boring. unfortunately, i do think coldplay is often unfairly shit on, which ends up making their output a bit underrated, ultimately, but after listening to this album, i can kind of understand why they have the reputation they have in popular culture. nothing here is bad, but boy, can it be a bit dull.

Moody and British

Why couldnt Coldplay have stuck with this sound?

eta um dos poucos deles que presta. ...parece radiohead...

No me convencen pese a que reconozco que algunas canciones son buenas.

Pleasant but boring

Yellow is a good song, I guess. Otherwise a soft-rock-snooze-fest.

Coldplay’s Parachutes is like the opposite of me: it doesn’t obnoxiously take up space. It’s musical parsley, it’s there and you don’t mind it, if you’re weird you eat it and if you’re a freak you ask for more. It’s designed to soundtrack the purchase of slacks at a department store, or a trendy bait shop that sells slacks also. The End

Don't Panic 3.4 Shiver 3 Spies 3.2 Sparks 3 Yellow 3.5 Trouble 3.2 Parachutes 3 High Speed 3.3 We Never Change 3 Everything's Not Lost 3.1 Score: 3.17

Moj đir iskreno iako mi nije groundbreaking

I've only liked two songs from here: "Don't Panic" and "Yellow". The other songs were alright to me. Coldplay is one of those bands I struggle to get into. I am not saying they are bad, but it's not for me. I usually like one or two songs on their albums.

Best coldplay album. standout songs: Shiver Sparks Yellow

you know what. i’ll say it. ‘yellow’ still kinda gets me in my feelings. even still, once you clock how badly chris martin wants to be thom yorke and how hard he’s trying to emulate radiohead’s softer, more acoustic side (e.g. ‘fake plastic trees’), it becomes impossible to unhear it. (i feel like this is super obvious in the interplay of piano and guitar in a minor key [??] on songs like ‘trouble’), and of course in chris martin’s vocals, his use of falsetto, that trailing off inflection, etc. in this sense it has the shape of good music but it is not actually good, and it’s certainly not interesting. at least on viva la vida they had some crazy strings and moments of dynamic percussion. this album just goes straight through you.

yeah whatever that was fine. pleasant enough but not that interesting.

background music for me

Better than I expected even if it isn't my absolute favorite. Brought back some nice nostalgia

Calm album, I warmed up to it as it went on

Hot take: Yapping on about Chris Martin and Bono being pretentious and unoriginal is about as pretentious and unoriginal as Chris Martin and Bono themselves. Having said that - this is pretty mid.

6/10 Radiohead; but scrubbed of all the weird, interesting bits.

Parachutes is a solid, if somewhat sleepy, debut from Coldplay. The first half of the album takes its time finding momentum — with the notable exception of "Shiver," which injects some much-needed urgency early on. Chris Martin's vocals are emotive, but several of the early tracks blur together in a haze of acoustic melancholy. Things pick up considerably around "Yellow," where the band starts to show more range and confidence. From that point forward, the album builds a more compelling atmosphere, with stronger melodies and better dynamics. "High Speed" stands out as a personal favorite — a moody, understated track that hints at the more layered, ambient direction they'd explore in later albums. Overall, Parachutes is an uneven but promising introduction, better remembered for its highlights than its cohesion. Favorite song: "High Speed"

Yellow is such a banger, otherwise consistent but mildly forgettable album. Shades of pre-Kid A Radiohead, Dave Matthews, etc.

Honestly, going in to this a bit biases because I’m not a huge fan of Coldplay’s sound. Feels very crafted and careful in a way I think is boring. Trying to keep an open mind. Cover kinda sucks though, like the typeface is a little self-serious and the moon is whatever, doesn’t really connect with the title. Let’s go: 1 yeah okay, this is a great album opener! The acoustic is a nice foundation, the lyrics are hopeful while not being too corny— I esp like the “Yeah they do” moments, good personality— and it doesn’t try to be all that and a bag of crisps. 2 Lyrics are a little heavy-handed on this, but damn if the vocals themselves aren’t full of talent— that falsetto is immediately impressive. Drums on this are great, weird lil shuffle feel— gives the song something. To hang its hand on. I don’t think it’s blowing me away, but it’s solid and better than I thought it was gonna be so far, especially given it’s a debut. I can totally hear myself hearing this in 2000 and being like damn, these guys got something— I’m just jaded by the 2025 Coldplay lol. This track probably goes a bit long, but last chorus has good energy so I’ll allow it. 3 I really like how each of these first three tracks really feel like their own thing, yet still cohesive. Gotta be the vocals that keep them intertwined, he has a really distinct voice that gives the instrumentals flexibility behind him. Not fucking with the lyrics, the vagueness of the titular “Spies” and what they’re metaphor for is pretty uninteresting to me. Still a good listen, the drums are really colorful (common theme so far) Andy he guitar is pleasant. The engineering of this record is top notch, btw, the levels are immaculate— haven’t even thought about it because there’s nothing to notice. 4 Oh dude, this song! I really really like this song! He has a bit more fry on the vocals that build to his hooks really well, gives some really emotional weight. The drums are really pleasant and patient, the riff as complimented by bass and piano touches is frankly beautiful, and his chorus’ falsetto is just arresting. If I were to nitpick, I’d say it could be a couple clicks slower? Damn, the acoustic guitar is so well miked, it’s so bright and dynamic. Some real interesting chords in the second verse. I latch on to “sparks” I found harder to do with “spies.” Like the outro, fits well. Just a top, top notch track. 5 Oh dude why do the drums sound like that? The snare sounds super out of tune or something or just sewed wrong. Uh can’t really say much about this song, the lyrics and vocal performance are phenomenal, and the instrumental around those is a good vessel to carry them in. I think the hook’s subtle layering of vocals and the bass being a bit high in the mix is my favorite part, and when everything cuts out for “you know I love you so,” it’s really perfect. God yeah I’m trying to see this song through the eyes of like a Y2K alternative music fan, and like, yeah it’s poppy, radio ready, all that— but it’s also just a complete song (besides the snare inexplicably sounding like hotdog water). Can’t really argue with the legacy too, it still gets play. 6 Yeah man Chris Martin is just a really good singer huh? Piano and bass layer really well on this, acoustic guitar takes more of a backseat which is think is due, so good choice/sequencing. Love the bits about the “spider web,” and love every time he says “trouble.” Lil bridge seemed kinda pointless. Woulda liked to see the melody evolve somehow, not every song can rely on new vocals to heighten the tone. 7 title track being a sub-min solo singer-songwriter track is a cool choice— problem is, I think this is his work vocal performance so far. The song feels like a fragment more than an interlude or the like/- which, since this record is 10 songs clocking around 40 minutes,— feels like a waste of time, gotta make those 10 count more than this one dude. 8 not sure I feel about this one— vocals are unusually forgettable and the lyrics are a little tepid, but the hook is nice and I stick with the song. Just gotta reiterate how phenomenally mixed and mastered this album is, besides the snare in Yellow I have zero complaints and I am a picky motherfucker. Coulda built to something, but kinda didn’t— which works with the songs that assert themselves. 9 This one skew towards wholly forgettable. Bridge feels a bit more substantial, but the verses and chorus don’t have the same personality as previous tracks— which matters on a 10 song album. I’d chalk this up to a debut album kinda thing 10 Don’t really feel like the piano-led ballad sound plays to Martin’s vocal strengths— I think his powered in his ability to rise above the instrumental around him, but his performance feels a little exposed without that context (esp at such low registers). Honestly the development of this is really nice, I like what it grows into— until the last minute-thirty or so of outro. I really like the lyrics and the stripped down aesthetic of that last bit, but think I’d prefer that bit excised from the five minute song it’s tacked onto and developed into something a little more complete. Feels too disparate. I’d say on the whole I really enjoyed this listen, and while I thought there were parts that were outshined by the moments of true excellence, it’s a seriously impressive debut record.

Mi pare poco Coldplay, ma anche poco particolare, fino a "Trouble" che stranamente mi piace, pur essendo molto caratteristica.

It's just all too "meh". Lacks any real momentum. The only song that gives me anything is Yellow.

For a debut album this is a pretty good album. Although I have never really taken to Coldplay I cannot deny they are some good tracks here.

Really only a couple good songs on here. Not bad but many of the songs sound the same

Definitely the early 2000 soundtrack.

Nothing exciting in this album, this is very and too slow even for me. It's not bad either... It's on the edge of being boring...

It’s pretty and sweet, and after Trout and the Captain it sounds like honey, but unlike its follow-up, I kinda struggle to listen to it without getting fed up.

74% Best: Shiver; Trouble Must-Hear? No

Not my favorite band tbh

I want to hate this album but it holds sentimental value. When my son was an infant, he is 20 now, he loved the song Yellow. It would soothe him to sleep even if he was being fussy. I can't give it 4 or 5 stars but a 3 seems fitting.

This was a fun reminder of a particular time in my life.

Très bon

6/10 I haven't listened to this allbum for years (if I ever had in full), but went into this thinking I was going to enjoy the nostalgia of it a lot. Coldplay were what got me into music - I have a very specific memory of my mum showing me X&Y on her ipod when I was about 8 and listening to the whole thing while playing the parachute game. I got my own ipod for my birthday a couple of months later and from there I was away, finally developing my own music taste. So Coldplay were a starting point for me and for all the shit they've put out over the years I can't help but have a soft spot for some of their earlier stuff. Not remembering what was on this album, I assumed it would be Coldplay at their stripped back best. In a way, it is, but so many of these songs just don't stand on their own. Yellow is undeniably a fantastic song, but so much of the rest of the album is forgettable - I'd forgotten it before and now I'm sure to forget it again. Listens: 1

Some alright ones but listening all the way through makes me want to top myself

Coldplay is the generic brand Radiohead. Really dull actually. Can't totally discount it as the production is good and appeals to so many, but fuck it's boring.

Yellow is the stand out track for me. A lot of nostalgia from listening to this in high school.

These guys are so boring. Not particularly offensive. Nice safe middle of the road three stars. Who cares.

פשוט טוב

It's really easy to hate Coldplay but I've got such a soft spot for the early singles

Much gentler and more subdued than the Coldplay we’ve generally come to know in the past two decades. While there’s been unique and engagement development in most song structures, the samey timbre of the entire album does begin to get stale near the end. Martin’s lack of vocal range makes this all the more obvious, although he does work creatively within that limited range. Listened to: on the subway. Favorite tracks: Sparks, Yellow

eh. white guy guitar, not totally my jam, but not horrible

It is good but also kinda boring lol. Best from Coldplay anyway

Liked it a bit better than I thought. Still sort of plain and unexciting to me.

Kinda slow, only recognized one song. Nothing stood out much

Mellow indie rock - Don't Panic is a great opener! Britpop style vocals in places (Shiver) following up from Oasis/Pulp/Blur tradition Yellow reminds me of the Snow Patrol slow indie to come Best track - Don't Panic

i like this album more than their others, its prob their best

Yellow and Trouble are A+ songs

markedly better than their second album, which is markedly better than the next and so on and so forth. I still think Chris Martin is the reason people started using the word “cuck”

Not a fan of Coldplay but I liked sparks.

You can hear the Radiohead 3/5 somewhat enjoyable

1. Don’t Panic - 7.4/10 2. Shiver - 8.5/10 3. Spies - 8/10 4. Sparks - 9/10 5. Yellow - 8/10 6. Trouble - 8/10 7. Parachutes - 6.5/10 8. High Speed - 7.8/10 9. We Never Change - 9/10 10. Everything’s Not Lost - 8/10 7.5/10

Keith - 6/10 Ross - 6/10 Caylum - 9/10

Dreamy sleepy sappy

It’s fine. Chris Martin really made a career of writing pathetic guy music. 3 stars because Shiver is an amazing song and so is Yellow.

Probably the definitive Coldplay album? I still don't love their lyrics but it’s from a time when Coldplay was good. An easy listen overall.

Good melodies. It's a bit dull though. Stand out song - Trouble

Ok. A little mellow. Maybe I'd like it better when I'm in a mellow kind of mood.

Bit of an old-school Radiohead vibe, but more mainstream. Lots of strummy midtempo/slow songs Highlight: "Shiver" (nice falsetto in chorus and strummy guitars through the song), "Trouble" ( (piano ballad), "Everything's Not Lost" (piano ballad, reminds me of Randy Newman--bluesy tinge in vocals--with a rousing chorus at the end), "Life is for Living" ("Hidden" track that's better than at least half of the listed tracks with a relaxed sound to it and a horn section) Notable: Don’t Panic (musically sounds like a Fleetwood Mac song with a funky backbeat)
