Reviews (page 8 of 14)
Comparing Coldplay to U2 is so tired but it makes sense. A huge band with a relentlessly aggravating cock as a frontman who even more annoyingly, does try to use their position for good, but in a way where you suspect raising their own profile may be a part of it. However, the most relevant comparison here is that both started out with great albums, before turning into a bland content production facility somewhere around their third. Had Bono been hit by a train in 1985, and Chris Martin in 2005, they would probably both be remembered like Jeff Buckley. Instead, they are forced to plough on, going through the motions, never writing another song as transcendent as Trouble or Shiver. Which is to say, this is a near perfect debut album. Only Yellow stands out as annoying, and it's not the songs fault it's been played to death. The end dries up a bit too - High Speed and We Never Learn are meh. It says nothing other than, "Love is nice and sometimes I'm sad", but it says it so well you can't really fault it. TL:DR - I can't stand Coldplay post X&Y, but if you can't see why they got huge after listening to this album, you're lying to yourself.
A goodie, this one. Beautiful acoustic guitars in unusual tunings, and an overarching haunting & melancholy feel. Early Coldplay is good stuff, then they went after the mega bucks and impersonal pop hits.
One of the better ones I've gotten recently
Really good. Coldplay before they went mainstream, a lot more basic songwriting.
Despite being a grass munching, virtue-signalling, tepid glass of water, Chris Martin certainly does know how to write a pop song. This album hardly grabs you by the balls, nor is it strikingly original, but it's too easy to dismiss due to the fact that liking Coldplay is massively, massively uncool.
Nostalgic and artsy. Very enjoyable.
Not the best Coldplay's album, but they show how they can develop in the future. Very good!
Good opening album from the now perennial 'most hated band on the planet. Success always brings out the knockers but most tend to forget how good Coldplay are, in the rush to downplay them. In my opinion
Nice
I remember when this album came out. I bought this album, and I've seen Coldplay in concert. Every track on the album is good enough for a listen, and several are tracks that I choose to listen to again from time to time. This album is close, but I'm not quite sure if it gets a full five stars. (4.5 stars).
so nostalgiac, really wish they stayed on this track
pretty great album, guitar & production. nice x
Coldplay puts me back in a very specific time
I know some people can't stand Coldplay, and I won't say that I'm a gigantic fan. I don't think most of their songs are very singable... but this album it this spot today. Melancholy without being overplayed. Nice stuff. Yellow still slaps after all these years. I don't think this album is as good as Viva La Vida, but it's still very good, and it kind of defined a whole musical era of the early 2000s.
It is above all a demonstration of dynamic and emotional range, as if to prove that the genre has gained maturity and solidity after so many failures (Blur, Oasis). Sparks and Trouble are pretty Smiths-inspired, with the whole album being one gigantic summation of British pop. (7/10) Favourite Tracks: Yellow, Everything's Not Lost , Sparks
Powerful melancholy is how I describe this album. Maybe the sad overtones were Chris Martin subconsciously foreshadowing Gweneth’s Goop foray into V-Steaming and jade eggs. Whatever led to this sound, it worked. Musically, I find this album interesting. It is slow paced and beautiful. For instance, I love the bass line on Sparks. Chris Martin’s voice fits perfectly with the sound too. When he goes falsetto on “they’re just spies” on Spies it really resonates with me. The same when he says “yellowww” on Yellow.
Interesting chord progressions. Sing along. Melancholy. Very good debut. Everything's Not Lost is a standout song.
2000s nostalgia
4,1 And it’s all yellooooooow! 😍😍😍
Gentle, melancholy and easy to listen to. I wore this album out In my youth and it still holds up today. The reason Coldplay became a household name and an album they haven't been able to top yet.
Interesting that the first album randomly chosen for this project happens to be the first album in Coldplay's discography, a band which I've had a long relationship with but have not listened to with any tenacity in the past few years. This album is incredible and mature with a consistent tone and pace. This is somewhat a detriment to the album as some of the songs are too similar to stand out on their own, but, on the other hand, also lend to the vibe that only this album generates.
Great album enjoyed most of it
Decent album but the singles cut from it were the best tracks overall.
''Shiver'' is a gem, to be honest, :3 ''Sparks'' is cute but a bit slow tho ''Yellow'' is just beautiful I'm a sucker for love songs so why is the title track only 40secs ;( ''High Speed'' just the title is enough for me to like it :)
O melhor album do Coldplay, dá pra ouvir no repeat.
A few bangers. Slowed down a lot at the end, still good though
Nice album.
This has indie disco rock moments as well as poignant emotional gentler songs. The start of a stratospheric and sustained rise to the top of global stadium and festival headlining glory.
Just bloody lovely pop tunes to have a cry to isn’t it.
Great mellow album
A breath of fresh air from the last selections..... like their music... my favs were Spies & Sparks
Such a nice melody. Even though I don´t like their current music that much I need to check out songs from their earlier years.
banger
very very strong 4. songs that are so crushing should not be able to be such bangers–it's simply not fair
Listening to Coldplay? *cries* Already Saved: Yellow Saved After Listening: Trouble
Saved Prior: Yellow, Trouble Saved Off Rip: Shiver, Spies, Sparks, Everything's Not Lost/Life is For Living Cutting Edge: Don't Panic Overall Notes: Between a 4 and a 5, songs 7-9 brought it down to a 4. I can see why they blew up off of this, a beautiful album. Having Yellow and Trouble back to back is greatest hits type stuff.
More enjoyable than I remember, still don’t enjoy some songs but appreciate the writing and production
Prachtig album!
Goeie plaat!
I’ve always liked this one. It’s actually a gem among their earlier stuff.
Definitely. Prefer this first album to their sophomore effort. Still a lot of songs that make me sing along. Gets a little show toward the end.
Before they sold out these lads were actually capable of stuff like this. 4/5
Sensitive brit pop which keeps growing. Also the place where to find Yellow, Don't Panic or Trouble... At the time it was a very welcome surprise; who would have said they would be releasing better records for two decades and beyond...
Buenas melodías y una gran voz. Recomendable para relajarnos
I'm genuinely surprised! I really liked it
Good album... Shiver is one of my favorites
This album reminds me of college. It's very easy to listen to even if it's not musically revolutionary.
2000, alt, Pop-rock, post-britpop, ziemlich nice, starke 4
Coldplay has done over the decades what they had to do to remain relevant, but it’s nice to see that since Day 1 they have had a unique sound that makes them, them.
I enjoyed this back in the day, though now it's hard to get rid of the image the band has now. A sort of brit-pop-rock-lite, nothing offensive - and recorded at Parr St.
Probably my favorite Coldplay album, love the mellow mood of a lot of the songs, mixed with the high energy of others. Loved getting back into this album and more early Coldplay music. Highlights: -Shiver -Spies -Sparks -We Never Change
Easily listening of course
Also good, but bit more average
I liked it. It's not something I'll listen everyday or when transmutting, but it's cool and full of classics for the modern music landscape.
Very solid debut album of a great pop band. Yellow is by far the best song on there but there is not a really bad song on there either
Fantastic album some good song and some great songs. Almost a 5.
Classic coldplay was the best coldplay, I like this one a lot.
Good album overall
When Coldplay was class ahah
The only Coldplay album worth a listen.
3 1/2 stars. Some really beautiful soundscapes and singing. I think there were too many songs that i thought were just okay/good for such a short album
I like it, but I don't think it's anything particularly special, if you know what I mean. It isn't even really amazing, just good.
this is actually a lot more popular than i expected when i saw this rec, i even recognized some of them which was surprising. honestly this is pretty timeless, i understand a bit of the hype and why u would cheat on ur partner to listen to them lol. but lwk it was def a lot slower, calmer, w not a lot of lyrics compared to the songs i usually listen to. i would have to really be in specific moods to listen. overall okay, a lot of the album didn't really catch my ear. songs ive added to my playlist: don't panic
Noia, a parte Yellow
Like Coldplay’s early days—before they went mainstream. With this album, I get the feeling they were still searching for their sound a bit; don't get me wrong, it’s a solid album with some good songs, but I think the follow-up is their masterpiece. But one thing has to be said: Coldplay aren't like fine wine—they haven't aged well. ⭐⭐⭐
Coldplay the type of band to out an affair at a concert and refuse to explain further. This album is ok, I always thought of Coldplay of temu Radiohead and that assessment tracks on this album
PSBW
Often dismissed as a cheap copy of other big sounding bands like U2 and Radiohead, Coldplay definitely borrows from both of them on this debut release. What's important to note is they've veered in a fairy commercial and arena-ready direction as most of the Britpop bands did following the end of Oasis' true prime years (thank Be Here Now for that one...) On their auspicious debut, Coldplay try to show us they're ready to pick up where Radiohead left off in 1997. Rather than continue disappearing into themselves and create wacky genre experiments as Yorke, Greenwood and co. did after the Bends, Coldplay asked themselves "what if The Bends was beige and was your mom's favourite rock album?" The answer is somewhere around this album. Alternatively, you could say Coldplay beat U2 and All That You Can't Leave Behind to the punch by having Chris Martin pretend to be the Bono that worried about alienating his fans by being too ironic. The result is a straightforward, earnest album that plays to both of those influences' strengths while also adding a tinge of bright-eyed melancholy. You can feel sad and nostalgic, but not excessively so, partly because the songs here aren't particularly memorable outside of the big singles. It's great mood music if your mood is "bus ride home after a long day at work/school." Besides the songs I recognize, this was sort of in one ear out the other for me, which is probably what inspired me to write this utterly nonsensical rant. Anything to weird up this very, very safe record. Key Tracks: Don't Panic Shiver, Yellow, High Speed (for that ironic title)
cool pop
Good pop album. Lyrically it didn’t do much but the songs were catchy enough to keep me engaged
Half and half, good songs and fillers.
I quite like his voice tbf... it's fine and a bit samey after a while
Easy pop but good one at that time...now you cannot listen to their stuff anymore...
A bit too slow for me personally
It's pretty but a bit of a snooze. 3.5 for nostalgia.
🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 (rounded down for lack of replay potential) Better than my bigoted Coldplay heart set me up for. The percussion bordered on earlyish Radiohead-esque, and I felt like this had an earlyish U2 feeling even. It got a little too ballady by the end but I enjoyed it. 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing
Decent
This album makes me wish this was on an out of 10 scale and not out of 5. Too many good songs to just be mid but I cant say I was loving the album as a whole. Each song has the same 4 cord feel and it becomes really boring when intently listening.
I don't hate Coldplay but even at their best they're pretty dopey. Chris Martin's voice alternates between perfectly pleasant and a falsetto that should be classified as a bladed weapon (and he's not afraid to use it). The music is sometimes lovely.
Okay okay we all know Coldplay are crap and overplayed but …. I cannot help but like this album despite this! To provide some context I was a very miserable 19 year old and like most people this age I was still trying to navigate my own music tastes. I bought Shiver when it was released and loved it (I still standby the fact that this is a great song!) I also think I had Brothers & Sisters on Fierce Panda which had unfortunately been lost in some flat move at some point. Anyway, I saw them support Muse and they were great, I bought Parachutes and it was great at the time. Do I still think they’re great - no not really (although I don’t have any hatred for them, just a bit dull)…. But… for a short time they made a miserable me happy and for that I am grateful.
More of a band effort it sounds like than rush of blood. I like the spies one a lot. Evocative shit.
There's something magical about the patience of 00s indie music. The xx mastered it like no one else, but there's a patience with Parachutes that makes it a really nice listen. I'm going to pick up Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends 99/100 times, but that one listen to Parachutes is great, especially on a dark rainy day like today
It’s was okay, just too slow for me.
What a pouty, whiny, sigh of an album this is. Even the chord changes of the acoustic guitar find a way to be overly shrill and melodramatic. Thankfully there were track numbers and short pauses to distinguish where one song ended and the next one began, as even those weren't sufficient enough for me to notice a few of the times. The one song that all of them blend into is fine, I suppose, particularly as a soundtrack for staring at one's feet and kicking rocks about, but as I was not in the mood or setting do do so it left me melancholy and mildly dissatisfied. I'll round it up to a 3/5 for being so abundantly flat with its highs and lows, but am certainly not looking forward to their other, lower rated offering on this list.

Has anyone ever sung so dispassionately about the things they care about? Phrases like "you know I love you so" and "we live in a beautiful world" could only sound sad coming from Chris.
Almost had me going at a 4 despite myself. First quarter of the album felt a little less polished than the made-for-commercial-licensing arena pop rock they are now. Like a millenial U2 or a bit easier-listening indie rock band. Shiver even evoked a bit of the Fiona Energy for me but as the album went on, the songs got a little sleepier and the lyrics cheesier here and there.
6.5/10 - Feels like Coldplay has strayed far from this album. I enjoyed this and would listen again.
There are some strong songs on here but the entirety of the album doesn't really interest me. It's way better than what Coldplay are putting out now. Light 6/10
Tried to forget it was Coldplay so I could be objective. The first 2 tracks are good.
I came into this project not liking the Coldplay that I'd heard, but when I listened to A Rush of Blood to the Head last year, I was pleasantly surprised. I don't like this one as much. I recognize "Sparks" from a movie, I think? Wedding Crashers? Google confirms it! I like that one. It's a simultaneously funny and sad comment on the times we live in that this band will be best remembered for the people allegedly having an affair at their concert. I liked the middle of this album ("Sparks" through "Trouble" ) but the rest didn't do too much for me. 3 stars. (Which I now see is what I gave A Rush of Blood to the Head, which I remember liking more than this. Call this one a low 3 and that one a higher 3. The perils of a 5-point rating system.)
I remember hearing 'Yellow' on the radio and thinking that it sounded like an updated Radiohead without Thom Yorke. Maybe Radiohead was going back to its Brit Pop roots? Now, I am not the fondest of many of Radiohead's more Brit Pop era. I find it a bit too emo, whiny and self indulgent. I have heard all the hits off the Parachutes album. The first few times, the songs are catchy but not too catchy; hummable but not cloying. They seemed to lack the animus that I feel towards Radiohead. So, more boring? Coming back to this album, this is a hits album with other songs. It showed the way out of the Brit Pop era to another way of continuing the popular parts. It feels more personal and less political. Simpler music. Aside from the hits which have now become overplayed though I still like 'Yellow', 'We Never Change' is something I would like. Given that this is their debut album, I would be more likely to give it a 3 than the 2 or 2.5 that I think it deserves. It serves as a template. Nothing is too crazy or different, just a way back. Like rock returning to something like its roots every generation, I feel that British music goes through these kind of waves.
A classic that deserves at least one listen even if you aren’t a Coldplay fan. This is the only album I’ve heard in full other than Moon Music and I would give this a 7/10
Mechanic: “So, what’s the problem?” Customer: “Oh, my car’s just been making this awful racket” Mechanic: “Have you tried taking out the Coldplay CD?” All jokes aside (thanks Emily), I don’t think Coldplay fits the unlistenable label as for the most part they’re quite pleasant, they’re just really easy to hate on since they’re popular. Chris Martin’s a pretty good singer in small doses and Yellow is definitely a solid song, even if it’s a little overplayed I just don’t care for the variety and overall sound, just too samey for me. That slow mellow theme every song has works well in a vacuum but I really don’t think this one showcases the bands talents very well, and I know they’re more creative than that. Maybe it’s because Coldplay is commercialized now but it just feels a bit soulless, like they were given a very specific prompt for what kinda music to make (even if they executed on that limited prompt pretty well) Still think they get too much hate but this is definitely not their finest work, it’s just not exciting or thought provoking
I know I make the joke a lot but like, it really doesn't sound that bad. A little boring though; I can only remember the yellow song after listening to the whole thing
Good stuff, definitely a preview of things to come. Not up to the level of Rush Of Blood To The Head, obviously, but decent music and decently mixed. Not quite to the level of a 4, probably more of a 3+...
I so badly wanted to like this more than I did. The production is nice and clean. Very straightforward, but nothing wrong with that. There is some pretty good stuff on here! “Yellow,” “Don't Panic,” and “Trouble,” are all pretty great! Unfortunately a lot of the album is mind numbingly boring. And unfortunately, I do think coldplay is often unfairly trashed on, which ends up making their output a bit underrated, ultimately, but after listening to this album, I can kind of understand why they have the reputation they have in popular culture. Nothing here is bad, but boy, can it be a bit dull.
Good with a couple great songs but the album got a little boring with a lot of the songs having a similar sound
Coldplay are a bit wet but there are a few songs on this album I do enjoy. Particularly Trouble.
Enjoyable debut from Coldplay who got a lot more love from the critics back then. Yellow is probably the most memorable track but I think Shiver is maybe song of the album.
I've nothing against Coldplay per se, but I do struggle to understand how they became so big!! It's competent, and musically quite good in places, but nothing exceptional
That 1 star is for sparks
My problem with Coldplay has always been that they seem to conflate melancholy with lifelessness. The muted production, softly spoken lyrics just do nothing for me. Especially when, despite how overplayed and generic Yellow might come off, it is a clear example of what good comes out of actually injecting some vivacity into their endeavours. Lukaku Starts.
Coldplay. The butt of any respectable music critic's jokes. It's hard to pin down exactly what makes them so strongly in a league of their own. I hazard it's because Chris Martin, and his music, is so endearing, so non-confrontational, that he is unlike any real human being. Despite his many human errors, such as naming his kid Apple. The fact of the matter is, I respect the band's standing greatly. They've carved out this identity, that's genuine, that's significant. And therefore, I can't go too low here. But the songwriting is pretty dull, the lyrics insipid and the production too clean. That is the Coldplay way. I wouldn't want it any other. Closer to a 2 than a 4.
For the life of me I cannot remember why Coldplay became such a huge fucking band. They are mid and put out mid albums.
You know how I know you’re gay? You like Coldplay. Ok that’s an old bit, just had to make some kind of Coldplay joke. Either way, on with the album. Honestly, I was kind of torn with this one. There were elements I did like, such as the jangly guitar on songs like Don’t Panic and Spies, which is one of my standouts. But on the other hand, Chris Martin’s voice can get kind of old over a long period of time, and sometimes it feels like he doesn’t vary his singing: He sings regularly for a while, and then goes to his head voice when he wants to sound emotional. I also thought that the instrumentation in some of the songs could end up feeling too similar to other songs on the album. I do think that there are good ideas in this album, which would be expanded upon in some of the band’s later releases, but to me, this album is kind of hit or miss, a rough landing if you will.
3.4/5
Good debut Establish themselves as a solid band and Chris Martin as a good lead singer and songwriter
Just not impressed. Music sounding like it's AI generated. I like Don't Panic as a song but not enough to lift this up. And what is Yellow? A nothing burger.
Strong debut album, start of classic coldplay sound.
Glad I listened to this again. It’s much better than I remember.
I have no strong opinions on Coldplay in general. I can enjoy them but I’d never put them on myself. This is a fine album, it sounded exactly like I expected it to and that sound was fine for what it is.
Devastating. Hater learns Coldplay isn’t dogshit but just kinda boring
Definitely not my favourite from Coldplay but it’s ok
3 out of 5. Two albums from them now and I don't really get the hate for this band. While it's not the most exciting music it could be worse.
RATING: 7/10 HIGHLIGHT: We Never Change LOWLIGHT: Yellow
It’s always difficult to rate their first two albums in light of what they later became, I.e. stadium rock, music by numbers for people who don’t like music but want something on in the background and to tell their friends they went to see Coldplay. Nevertheless this is a solid debut album, well produced with good moments and Yellow holds up well after more than a quarter of a century. Some of it is a bit bland though, 7/10
Never paid much mind to them. Slow but catchy. There is a mood to their sound though. This one is going to have to go in my “need to listen more pile”
Alright, High Speed is suspiciously similar to Subterranean Homesick Alien off OKC Suspect their next album is a lot better
Why is there so much hate for Chris Martin and Copldplay? They've never been my favorite group. But the produce some solid work. This album hits like any great lo-fi. Tempos are relaxed but don't drag. Lyrics are moody, but not trying too hard. I'm digging way more than I thought I would. Don’t Panic Sparks Yellow Trouble
I've never felt strongly either way about Coldplay. I do really like a few of their songs, but never really gotten too in to them. I've also never listened to one of their albums all the way through before and doing so made me realize how much all their songs sound the same. that being said, Yellow is a banger.
I've called early Coldplay Radiohead clones a lot, but to be fair to them, being a copy of a better band doesn't automatically make you bad. Also, this is just a personal thing, but I remember in secondary school EVERYBODY'S favourite song was Yellow, and I didn't get it then, and I extra don't get it after listening to the whole album. Maybe the simple lyrics spoke to all the 13 year olds.
…when I ruled the worlzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Can't believe I'm giving coldplay a 3, but this was better than expected
Pretty cool album, very somber and atmospheric. Sparks and Yellow have been some of my favorite Coldplay songs, and they really fit with the album. High Speed was another stand out I like. 6.7/10
I am not a fan of Coldplay.
Gets a little boring after a while but not bad. Some of the tracks are great.
This version of Coldplay is pretty good. Like a less talented, more gay Radiohead.
Listen, they are bad but THAT bad. 3/5
Not massively my cup of tea but alright tbf
Amazing Coldplay album, honestly I was surprised by how many songs I already knew! I was pleasantly surprised by this album, I thought I wasn’t gonna care for it at all. Some of the songs are extremely moving, a very enjoyable listen!
Better than you’d expect Coldplay to be. They are Radiohead from Temu even though I don’t like regular Radiohead much to begin with. The more pop edge makes it a bit more enjoyable to listen for me. The album kind of switches between melancholic, pleasant and boring. Sometimes leans too much in the boring direction but it’s good enough to not hate.
Quite good
Canciones top: Sparks y Yellow
Sure it's not rocking out but the songs are *good*. But then again I've always had a soft spot for Don't Panic, Shiver, Everything's Not Lost and others because they were everywhere when I was in high school. Later Coldplay got more boring/bland but this was good
bonitinho, me lembra a época que eu era vidrada em coldplay. mas realmente, prefiro o "a rush of blood to the head".
You know what, I don’t like Coldplay, it’s overblown sentimental nonsense. But i enjoyed this album, the production is lovely, the guitar parts are really nice. I’d probably give this album a 4 if it wasn’t for Chris Martin. And I don’t even know if that’s because of him on this album, or just everything else he’s done has ruined any chance of me enjoying his contribution to this album.
Mostly meh. I didn't hate it and even recognized one song from 2000. But the songs all tended to sound the same and the vocals were delivered with a monotone.
This is a pleasant, inoffensive listen. It's interesting, because Coldplay isn't shy about dissonance or crunchy sound effects, but everything has this shiny gloss over it. I don't know enough about music production to put my finger on what's missing, but I'll say I wish some of those rougher details had a chance to really breathe. The distorted guitar in "Yellow" is an example — it's there and you hear it, but it's not as in your face as it could or should be. Its sorta under the stage as the more attractive parts of the song take center stage. The music itself is good. It's all well written, lyrics are decent, and performance is excellent. Not a lot of memorable stuff, though.
I consider myself a casual Coldplay fan; I like a good amount of their songs, but rarely have listened to an album of theirs from start to finish. Yellow and Trouble were the ones from this particular album I was already a fan of. The album flowed cohesively but I can’t say I took the time to dig in or came away with any other favorites.
Easy to hate on given what they’ve become, but there are some fine songs on here, even if it did wear thin towards the end
I mean, this is alright. I’m not a Coldplay fan, but I think it’s mostly their later stuff I can’t stand. This was never really annoying or bad or anything, though everything does sound pretty samey. The songs are way more slower and subdued than I expected but that was okay I guess.
6/10
Thoughts while listening: Hey Chris, Martín, do you like Jeff Buckley? I can see why I thought of them as a Radiohead tribute band but I was mistaken, they’re just huge fans of Grace.
I still think “Don’t Panic” is a really incredible song. I don’t really still feel that about “Yellow.” The rest of the album is less memorable, inoffensive but a little lacking in character. 2.5 stars, rounded up because I did enjoy “Everything’s Not Lost.”
Me gustó.
Despite current reputation, Coldplay's debut still holds up as pretty good Radiohead inspired pop rock. The Radiohead comparisons as they came up were definitely not unfounded, but I think they do well enough to set them selves apart from what the Head was up to at this time by focusing on a more acoustic sound. I enjoyed my time here although, I think that feeling would diminish the further towards present day in their catalogue your listening though. A band that started with a great initial sound, but never really evolved into something more interesting.
Decent album, before they disappeared up their own arse. Dont Panic is a great song. Is very 'The Bends'y But 1 is very harsh
There are a couple of songs that are cool. The rest is not bad.
I’m relatively new to Coldplay; I like their sound. Can’t decide if the U2 stadium rock influence is too much, or whether they do enough innovative with it. I think I like the other coldplay album in the challenge better. This is a 3 for now, but i’d like another listen.
People hate on Coldplay because they're mainstream and frankly, I'm often one of them. Some good songs, mostly a bit boring. This album was... all right. The rhythm section can be surprisingly groovy. Maybe Coldplay would benefit from being centered less around Chris Martin.
Anyone that was a teenager during the melodramatic phenomenon that was 'Garden State' is going to remember this album. It got a lot of time on my high school girlfriend's CD player. I don't really have a 'dog in this fight' as a non-fan but this is probably Coldplay's best album. The recording quality and instrumentation are done very well. I have issues with the singing and lyrics but that's just my personal taste. When this album came out I interpreted it kind of like 'OK Computer but without anything that will make you feel weird'. It's an inoffensive listen
I did like a couple of tracks at the time, and I remember them more than I thought I would. Fine indie rock aiming for the mainstream. Acceptable. 3 Heard before? Yes Owned: No: 67/271 (24%) Will I get: No
it's iconic...but cheer up!!!
Lamentablemente, a mí no me gustan.
It’s not bad
not great, but better than I expected it to be. Fun arrangements, good vocals - I can see why people like it back then, I wouldn't listen to it though.
A little disappointing, but Yellow holds up.
This is a pretty good album. Much like the rest of the early Coldplay stuff it's fine and it's much better than what came later. I can see why it was popular it's definitely an easy listen. Shiver I think my be my favourite.
Better than I expected Nice on a rainy day
Yawn. Look, folks, it's a pop-rock band. My position on the ranging debate over whether or not they are good, highly influential, overrated, et cetera is very simple: they aren't worth the energy to debate. The album itself was very well-produced mediocrity. This is boring. Influence 3. Hits 3. Quality 5. Intangibles 3. My daughter had to wake me up when it was over 2.
Radiohead for suburban moms
Don't know why it's on this list, but this is a perfectly fine album. Nothing more nothing less.
Not my favorite album but lovely
Played this album a lot back in the day but not since a steady 3
Listening to this, I got lost thinking why was Coldplay not well regarded or acquired some status, compared to other bands. I read something about the earnestness of their music and how hard it was for something like that to resonate in an era of apathy and cynicism. And I'm in favor of that view. But listening, I don't really feel that big of a connection or amazement from their music. They are not bad, for a debut album is decent. But beyond the singles, this is not remarkable. And I think that's the problem: their music on this album is okay. In that logic, their next works, where they experimented and delved on other genres are probably more interesting. But sadly, I got this notion of them making music for "normies", so I didn't listen more. Maybe they indeed became a pop band. But in some sense, ¿Don't we want to see our favorite artists explore and experiment? ¿Is not this a monkey paw situation? Maybe the most valuable part of this exercise of listening music is the capacity to recheck some artists, their music and appreciate more with a new perspective
Coldplay is always so meh to me
This album has two incredible songs, Yellow and Everything's Not Lost. The rest of it isn't bad but just doesn't really compare.
A solid album all the way thru
13 year old loved it back in the days
ultimate sad boy album, whenever i hear sparks i immediately think of sad nba player edits - otherwise a little overhyped i reckon but still good maybe i’d like this more if i was more heartbroken
It's nice to hear an album that uses subbass after such a long time of pre '85 albums. Anyway, it's ok, Yellow is the only standout.
Coldplay is a band you love to hate, but their first album is usually free of criticism. So I expected to like Parachutes, an album I listened to a few times in the early 2000’s. The album started with a couple of well known bangers and I fully expected to give this four stars. The second half kind of fizzled out though, Coldplay style.
Look good album, poor timing, probably would've been a 4, in 2 months, but if we're getting back to back Coldplay, I'm gonna need Africans on mesas with pianos, iykyk
Kind of slow and same Yellow High speed
xo
Could have been worse From the extremely polarized reviews I saw, I was convinced this would be a hit or a massive miss. It wasn’t either. I enjoyed the first few songs, but after that they started to blend together. It wasn’t awful, though, which was better than I was expecting.
This is a sweet little album. No one can hate on this Coldplay album, now any of there other albums say what you want but this one is so nice and lovely. I love yellow and the story of him trying to sound like Neil young in the studio.
Nearly four stars. So close, but it's s bit bland in a weird way. I really like it, though.
Good but gets a bit same-y
Now why TF (capital THE FUCK) is Coldplay on this list. Like ok. You're really gonna make me listen to a Coldplay album in full?? Really??? I had a personal thing going to never listen to a Coldplay album yet here I fucking am I guess. They're good, I like them I like this, just it's fucking Coldplay. Like. Can we not. It's ok though. We can. I'm not panicking don't worry. It is a pretty beautiful world. Fuck you Ms. Russel. Sparks live is kinda peak. Yeah ok this is actually really good. Oh it's so british though. I'm getting blur flashbacks someone save me please. They're literally all spies bro. I hate Yellow. It's just too TikTok. Idk I can't do it. Reminds me of covid. I'll always look out for you 💔 That's deep. Idk I can definitely get behind sparks. Bro I literally never meant to cause you trouble. Bro. Bro please. Bro I mean it. Bro. I'm literally just in my little bubble bro. Bro please. Why are we always in a bubble. That's my question here. This is not bad. I don't know I think we change. I think the people that say we don't just don't wanna acknowledge that sometimes change is unrecognizable. We're always changing, but we never notice since we're always just ourselves. Hopefully. Lowkey we're done now like wrap it up. I'd give it a 3.5. Favourite: Sparks Least favourite: Yellow
You can tell Yellow is going to be a hit, and several other songs stand out as well. Very impressive for their first real album and after only a couple of years together. Not a lot of range on this album in their sound, but it's still one you can put on an listen all the way through.
Very assured for a first album and a lot of earworms
starts off really great and falls off a bit in the middle. a couple boring songs and a couple great songs i gave it a 75
Not Coldplay's best, but I do love me some Coldplay.
Not my jam. I think Chris Martin has a good voice for the style, but I can't get jiggy with the soft-boi rock style. I will say that the remastered version sounds great in headphones. "Shivers" is the one track that I think goes in a general playlist.
🌽 🌽 🌽 IT WAS ALL YELLOW 🌽 🌽 🌽 Shiver’s good, like the drums and guitar pattern on it. I like the title track- it’s a nice little interlude. The twangy guitar on high speed is jammin’. I think my big question I’m chewing on today is “why do I like Radiohead so much and feel the opposite about Coldplay?” Maybe part of it is the overplay. RH feels more vulnerable and sincere, although there were some tracks on here that did feel real to me. It’s a shame newer Coldplay doesn’t seem to have the same stuff.
Some good songs but it wasn't anything life-changing. I was a little bored to be honest.
3.8
One of those bands that somehow manages to be both overrated and overhated. Nice guitar lines but otherwise mostly a bit dull, though pleasant enough. Not too long, which is good.
coldplay ):
Great first album, shame about the rest
Pretty alright, but I feel no need to return to it. And y'know, sometimes that's what this challenge is about too: listening to something new and just thanking it for the singular experience it gives you.
Back in the early 2000s, we didn't have internet access at home, so I faithfully and diligently read Finnish music magazines. Probably in August 2000 Markku Halme (RIP) reviewed Parachutes and said in his positive review something like "boys from good families have made a warm, but truly uncommercial album". At fifteen years old I was already a proper indiepop boy so I thought that this will be something no one else will ever love or understand so I bought Parachutes without hearing a note. The disappointment came only around the time of the second album. This is Coldplay's best album and "Don't Panic", "Shiver", "Yellow" and "Trouble" are as clearly Coldplay's four best songs. Unfortunately, the other songs are not nearly as good. There must be a Marvel-multiverse where Coldplay only ever released those four songs on an 12-inch and continued with real estate jobs or banking or whatever and music nerds would pay handsome money to get a copy of that EP.
Songs all sound a bit the same. Some songs kinda peaceful but also just a bit boring.
Fine.
Coldplay being Coldplay.
Usual Coldplay, put the first song on and it all merges into one
Good, but it's never been my jam.
Production is good, but nothing really stands out
3.65/5
Ok so I must state my anti Coldplay bias at the door. I find Chris Martin grating as a human being and a musician, but this is primarily based on late 2000s Chris Martin and beyond, the age of the “conscious uncoupling” etc. This is a decent album. There’s a good amount of variety between the slower, emotive stuff, more up tempo pop and some almost (almost) psychedelic sounds. And Yellow is a banger even with all the elongated “oooooo” noises. So hey I enjoyed it but my views aren’t necessarily changed.
Una grata sorpresa. Realmente lo disfruté
A LOT better than more recent stuff. A bit muted for me
took me back to the Napster era. Chris Martin has a beautiful falsetto, Spies is a cool song. Their sound is a little polished and emotion free for my taste but there are some fun and lasting pop songs on this album. Everything's Not Lost sounds like a billy joel song.
Classics like Yellow 💗 their debut album is fine
Here are some scenarios where I would recommend this album: you want some entirely forgettable music to cry to; you find Radiohead too edgy and not quite dreary enough; you are having a dinner party with strangers, and you want everyone to be disappointed but unaffected by your music choice. Man, I've hated this album by default since it came out and became the epitome of middle-of-the-road, boring parents' music. But you know what? I'm a boring parent now, and this is pretty enjoyable. Some of the songwriting is decent. Yellow is an absolute smash. I'd still rather listen to something with more character, and I still resent how much they rip off Radiohead. 3*
Found it pretty boring, but relaxing as if the songwriter had nothing to prove and all the time in the world. Tracks to Track: Yellow (stood out by a mile)
5/10
a bit too boring at points but the highs are SO high... damn... don't panic is a killer opener
The most vanilla music imaginable
There is beautiful music and stupid music for 90% of this grrrrrrr. I was still pleasantly surprised ngl. But why on earth are there 2 Coldplay albums on this list???
before i listened to this. ana messaged me that i'm not allowed to call it safe or compare it to pantone's color of the year because she already did that. she's evil for that because there really is no other word for this than safe. it's completely serviceable and commercial. the kind of thing you'll hear playing softly as background noise in a business trying to fill the silence because it's unlikely to offend anyone. it's palatable and it has some pleasant moments, but outside of mild toe-tapping, there's not much here that makes it stand out. i listened to this while doing some crosswords, you get what i mean? that's the vibe. i can't even really imagine the type of person who Loves this album, but it might've been better had everything been minecraft parodies i think.
I've never hated Coldplay, at least y'know, the first half of their catalogue. I stick by Viva La Vida or Death and all his friends actually being a great album (even if its not on this list). I find the fact that the highest rated reviews on this website are significantly lower then the average sums up Coldplay. In a word, this album is safe. If it was a color it would be Panotone's colour of the year, Cloud Dancer, and if it got any awards for the best of something today it would rightfully be met with similar outrage. That's not because this album sucks, but rather its because it is the most "okay" album to perhaps have ever existed. Coldplay's first foray is the pinnacle of easily digestible, radio friendly, alt-rock. None of this is an insult, it is doing precisely what it was made to do and it is doing it well. For songs I like from this album, I'll go with trouble, which I heard in countless adverts growing up but I still somewhat like. Songs like High Speed and Sparks are fine too, even if they sound like Radiohead without the parts that make radiohead special
I started listening to this album on my way to school, but forgot I still had somethings in the queue. I was like "Oh wow, I didn't know Coldplay was this good" and then I went back and looked at the songs I had just listened to and realized it wasn't Coldplay. I had thought the voice kind of sounded like Coldplay, but then once I actually started listening to Coldplay, I was like OHHHH yeah this is definitely them. Going into this album I think I only know Sparks and Shivers. It's decent. Good background music.
Perfectly fine
Less into this than their second record. But its still much better than expected. Their modern music is real bad. This is just passable. Better for sure but still not alot of substance. It goes by quick enough. Thats mostly the good things I got. Yellow is a legit good song. Ive always like thay one though. Nothing else really stands out. And thats the best Coldplay has to offer. After this we get viva la Vida or whatever and after like 2009 that got real annoying. So Coldplay is dead I guess. Bye. Didnt hate to know you but I didnt have fun either
It's fine, nice to listen to, sounds cohesive as well. Nothing special, though
3.75 - Grading this album was difficult. Coldplay holds such a huge space in the mainstream rock space, and I have always wondered how that is when I've always viewed them as some version of plain or as just being adequate, safe, and agreeable. That being said, it is a pretty unremarkable album BUT there are a few songs that are so timelessly iconic (at least in my upbringing) that they hold much more weight than what I'd give them on just a first listen. Fav Songs: Sparks // Yellow // Parachutes
The Thom Yorke wannabe and co. debut album really brings back early memories of music. Always felt more of an affiliation to Rush of Blood to the Head & X&Y, but this holds its own. Fave tracks: Don’t Panic, Spies, Trouble, High Speed
overrated, coldplay suck. I'm half kiddint. This was pretty good, just not really anything super amazing
It's 3.5
Oh look, back when Coldplay actually wrote music. I've never liked Coldplay, but this version of them were actually good.
When I first heard "Yellow" as a teen, I told everyone I wanted that played at my funeral.
Just ok to me, but has a few songs I remember fondly (sparks, shiver)
White bread
Another Coldplay album that is just fine. They are just inoffensive rock, and there’s a place for that, just not something I go out of my way to listen to.
Feel good music but sad style lol trouble is a better track than yellow.
It's a solid album, not exactly for my taste but it's clearly a good Coldplay album. 6.5/10
Other than being really popular I'm not sure why such an inoffensive band attract such hate. This is pleasant enough but doesn't hit the heights of their second album.
Can see their talent but still so mediocre
Probably would have slapped in 2000 but in 2026 its a little samey. A nice winter album though. Maybe I'm not depressed enough for this one right now? Yellow is an all timer though. I also really liked the final track "Everything's Not Lost" it felt like a refined Randy Newman song
Was not impressed yellow is a banger tho
I'm a bit fatigued from too much Coldplay over the years. But I'll admit this is a decent álbum, nicely arranged songs.
Coldplay is a 3 of a band for me. They're harmless. They're non-confrontational. They're safe. They're the band you take home to your parents. They're not the band you remember after they're done.
This was much better than I expected it to be. I get why people used to think they sounded like radiohead.
Of course it's ridiculous to compare this band to the best in history, but that doesn't mean they're bad. This is a perfectly competent debut album. Best track: Yellow 3⭐️
Meh
Did not expect to like this. Pleasantly surprised. Am I becoming a Coldplay fan? I'm not. Sadly.
It’s abit wishy washy at points but the debut Coldplay id call solidly “good”. Trouble being the stand-out track
Quite a comfy album and spies is excellent, but as a whole I’m really only vibing with it and not loving it
People love to hate just to hate. Did Coldplay maybe sell out after Viva La Vida? Yes. But is there body of work up until that point honest, sincere and of great production value? Yes. Two things can be true at once. It had been a long time since I listened to this album and I expected it to be worse than I remembered. But it’s solid! Great melodies, great playing from the band, and tightly mixed. If you like Jeff Buckley’s Grace but saying you don’t enjoy this album at all, you’re lying to yourself. But don’t get me wrong, this is not nearly as good as Grace. Lol! But it has some of the same sonic qualities at times and beautiful lyrics.
Great debut possibly their best album
Really solid album, especially for a debut. I think I like their second album better, but this one has a number of great tracks. 3.5
6.5/10 It's pretty alright, I didn't find anything remarkable about it but it's good for easy listening in the background.
Some nice tunes here. Chris Martin’s voice works sometimes, but can become tiresome. That said, on the whole, it’s a decent album. I really enjoy Yellow quite a lot. However, I won’t be putting this album in regular rotation.
A very cohesive sound and I didn't realise this was actually their debut - it's very strong in that context. But yeah I do think a lot of the songs are similar!
Muy buenos, muy creativos, pero demasiado depres
mid
Really front loaded. They used to be an alright band.
Yellow is good but the rest is dull
Like listening to music in soft focus and pastel colours eating jelly babies and drinking sherry. Nice until you vomit. Yellow rescues it a bit.
I have a complex relationship with pre-2011 Coldplay. I say pre-2011 because everything after Viva La Vida has been kind of ass. Parachutes is good if it comes to me at the right now when I want to listen to something calm and a little boring. They're easy to clown on, but Parachutes is pretty good and I wish that they maintained that momentum instead of falling into pandering radio pop. Don't Panic is a great opener that always makes me feel some kind of way. Shiver kind of annoys me and I have no idea why it has more streams than Spies which immediately follows it in the track list. Yellow and Sparks are the biggest hits off Parachutes with 3.5 and 2.5 billion streams retrospectively. With that, Yellow is so insanely overplayed and it's usually a skip for me for that reason. I'm just kind of sick of it and I do think it's one of the weaker tracks on the album, so it's a shame that Yellow was the biggest song on it. Sparks is pretty boring but still pretty, and I like it a lot better than Yellow. High Speed is great and sounds like a dinner party with some vibey, slightly funky bass and guitar. The 7 minute(!!) hidden track at the end was fine, just like the rest of this record. Say what you will, but Chris Martin has a recognizable and strong indie voice and Coldplay's influence can't be understated. I don't always reach for this album, but when I do it hits. I was in the mood for it today and it was a nostalgic pleasure to listen to, despite its sterility. Parachutes is so wildly inoffensive. It's your mom's favorite album unironically. It's Torn between a 2 and 3 but I'm going to give it a 3 for its staying power, nostalgia general beauty, and obvious influence on music to come. God DAMN though, is this shit boring.
Mediocre
Still don’t like Chris but yellow & trouble are belters
Still mellow.
It sounds like Coldplay, and not even the exciting stuff. Meh. It’s hard, too, to put it back in its context. This was different 26 years ago. Now it’s been copied and interpolated to death.
Unfortunately, my childhood orthodontist strictly played Coldplay and The Fray, so they are kind of tainted for me. Even more damaging: in middle school, we had the length of a Coldplay song played 3x (the same one…) to get changed in the locker rooms. Horrifying pubescent memories. Faves in album order: Spies Sparks Trouble
Their most avant-garde record. It remains less Coldplay-sounding than their following records so it is perhaps less iconic. 8/10 [KEEP]
Coldplay presents its challenges in terms of offering a review. On the one hand, I find it is quite a listenable album. The tonal range and complementarity of various instruments alternating between accenting the melody or the beat displays definite music prowess. Possibly, Chris learned a fair bit about this from his mother. On the other hand, one can't help but feel there is a certain formulaic pop love song structure that comes off as just a bit trite. Were it not for how eminently charming Chris is, the lyrics and his falsetto singing style could definitely be seen as cloyingly saccharine. I rate it higher than I might because somehow it does manage to hold me in its thrall.
it was partially yellow.
I certainly like this stripped back, raw and less polished version of Coldplay more than modern day Coldplay. There’s a tone of cautious optimism, they somehow seem sad and happy at the same time. I enjoy that more than the new Coldplay which is just, happy all the time - it seems at least. Nice to hear another Coldplay member sing on the first track also.
I don't like Coldplay anymore, but I loved this when it came out, so it's very nostalgic.
Coldplay heeft mooie nummers. Maar vind dit album een beetje flauw
6/10 Best songs: Yellow, Everything's Not Lost My opinion about this album is the same as my opinion about every Coldplay song I've ever heard: well-done music, but waaay too slow and one-note for me. It shouldn't be a surprise that I find songs like Yellow, where harmonies add some interest, to be the strongest on the album.
It’s not quite my sound but there is good talent on display here. Having a debut album this good is many an artists dream
Lovely background music, but nothing really stood out to me.
Growing up in the UK when we this band blew up, it was uncool to like this band. Leaving my biases at the door, I had a good time with this. You can see why they blew up. 'Yellow' is still an absolute belter of a track, and I was impressed with some of the non-singles too. It's like if Radiohead focused on putting out hits instead of experimenting after releasing The Bends, which doesn't have to be a bad thing! They play it safe and there is a hint of blandness creeping up as you approach the end of the record, but it finishes up just before it detracted from my enjoyment too much.
3/5. A pleasant surprise. Coldplay is one of those bands that has a stigma around their music, and I would agree that much of their catalogue is pretty bad. However this debut album is actually pretty alright. Some easygoing alt-rock that highlights Chris Martin’s strong vocals. Also some solid guitar parts. Quite enjoyed shiver especially. The biggest flaw of this album is that it’s just a bit samey, which causes it to feel very front-loaded. nothing in the back half really gripped me as much.
I already had Sparks and Yellow saved But now I saved Shiver and Spies. Its like medium good. Like some songs may hit the feels a little, but not enough for me to wanna put the song 10x on loop. The ending to Spies got me tho. I started singing out
I'm not really a Coldplay fan, but their importance as a cultural phenomenon is undeniable. Some tracks are good, but as an album it's mostly quite dull. Can't really give it more than a 3, but might let it stay there.
I am really glad I listened to this, the album in its entirety is quite good. The big singles - Yellow and Trouble - were the ones I’d heard most (growing up in the UK and listening to radio they were on a LOT) but I like them the least. And the final song is a mood
It’s alright… all kinda sounds the same His voice is very nice and the music is good Just very similar to each other and all a bit too for my taste
That's not a bad album, quite listenable.
It's fine. Couple hits, couple misses. Certain artists like Coldplay that get exceedingly popular also seem to get exceedingly hated on (Nickelback, Taylor Swift, etc.). I personally think this hate is almost always over the top. Save your hate for true trash like Kid Rock. I definitely didn't hate this, but it also didn't really do anything for me. Just very average.
Nice Brit-pop, but musically nothing earth shattering or forward thinking.
some really popular songs overall nice vibe almost no lows and few highs
