Reviews (page 11 of 14)

High school throwback! Very familiar sound but still don't love Chris Martin's voice.

It was ok

Yeah, ya know, it's Coldplay, they're ok.

A rush of blood to the head is muuuuch better

yeah it’s good

I don’t understand the strong feelings people have here. It’s nice 🤷🏻‍♀️ what I’d expect if I put “adult contemporary” on on the TV

Nice enough. "Spies" is a good track. Ditto "We Never Change." It is kind of samey in general, another one that blends into the background. "Everything's Not Lost" is a nice bit of variety, especially the earlier piano-and-vocal parts.

Geht so...

It holds up nicely, the guitar tones and soaring vocals are balanced with Indy style soft and unrefined vocals

Overplayed at an old job

Really liked Yellow and remember this indie rock period and bands like Coldplay played on everyone’s stereo. A moody sound.

Pretty solid album. Some good songs on there.

Good vibes but kinda boring

Beautiful combination of notes and sounds.

Wish I could give it 3 1/2 stars

Musical Melatonin. I could not keep my eyes open

Pleins de singles excellents, bon album de pop

Meh. Not terrible. Not great. Yellow was the only somg I almost clicked like on.

What a voice! I always felt Coldplay was so highly produced, but this album has quite a folksy feel. High Speed has a very southwestern feel, and reminds me of Jonathan Wilson - Desert Raven.

favourite song: yellow this was fine i think. three is probably too harsh but four would be too generous. 3 it is.

Ist okay, wirkliche Highlights fehlen

This was an easy listen. Nothing awful, nothing great. It felt like one really long song, then “Yellow”, then another really long song. Will not revisit.

I remember when Coldplay were just a group of young guys with a single – Yellow. They seemed sweet and pastoral and endearing in a plaintive way. 25 years, and several identical, whiny, boring records later… I’ve heard that they’re great live, but I don’t think I could face it. for the fact that this was their first album and I didn’t know what was yet to come, they are a classic 2.5. For the fact that, despite myself, I seem to know all the words add this is probably their album that I feel most kindly towards, I’ll bump it.

This is the only Coldplay album I'm truly familiar with. I think it's a fine album with good songs. I'm a bit puzzled how a band like Coldplay (76.9 M monthly listeners) became mega while a band like Badly Drawn Boy (317 K monthly listeners) did not. You could insert any decent early aughts band here. My point is the difference is vast and I simply don't hear über brilliance from this band. Don't get me wrong, I like the mix of pop and chill and I think Chris Martin's voice is sweet. I always loved the song Yellow and adore how it's an unusual love song to his girl Gwyneth.

I know the name Coldplay, but I don't think I've heard anything by them. At least not knowingly. It is a lot more "pleasant" than I expected, Pretty melodic, has that sort of guitar sound that i equate with a lot of Christian Contemporary music. kind of a pulsing, doubling the beat kind of thing. With a decidedly mid-tempo beat. The vocals are a little high-pitched, but clear and not strained. The overall sound is clean and clear. It's all fine. Just fine. As in only fine. Somewhat "backgroundy"... Nothing to especially like, or dislike. It was intersting to read the reviews here, seems that Coldplay inspires a lot of VERY postitive and VERY negative reactions. I guess it cultural, where you may have been (personal space) in 2000. Looking at them without that lens, I can't really generate a lot of emotional response one way or the other. Solid 3/5.

Good band, seems a little down and dreary though. He has a unique singing style and voice but I don't like when he sings super high like in Shiver.

It's fine. There are a handful of songs with catchy hooks or interesting lyrics, but overall this is just more beige than I remember at the time.

Better than expected, although still hard to shake off the cloud of bad feelings from later work.

Coldplay has an iconic sound, distinct from anyone else I’ve ever listened to. Sonically distinct, curious message in their lyrics. Puts me in a thoughtful mood.

ALL YELLOOOOOOW

It’s alright, nothing crazy

Tricky band to rate impartially because, well, everyone has an opinion on them right? I don't honestly get the strong emotion they provoke (whether love or hatred). This album undoubtedly had a major impact at the time, and I can totally understand why it makes the list. But, I just can't *love* it - bland vanilla posh UK AOR. It's not bad at all, but "great".......?

About what I expected from a Coldplay album. Not bad, but it’s just a “one-note” album.

Hey, it's Coldplay. You either like it or you don't. I don't.

It rubbed me the wrong way and nearly worsened my mood.

Aw man. All I can say is, it doesn’t appear I have been missing much by not listening to this band for the last quarter century. More or less perfectly executed and more or less perfectly vanilla. Fine if you don’t want your music to be too interesting. For me I guess I just find Chris Martin’s vocals to be merely passable and I don’t think his lyrics are that good. But they have some catchy tunes so whatever. YMMV.

its a good album, but i cant have the whininess

Yellow drove me mad when it first came out, but this is nice

It’s alright,yellow is good.

Solid record, a lot if the songs sound very similar. Reminds me a little too much of radio heads sound from ok computer/kid a. 3.5 Repeats: don't panic, sparks, yellow, everything's not lost Skips: shiver

The best Coldplay album, according to people who hate Coldplay (which I used to, now I'm just more eh about them), and it's due to blatant rockist allegations: when Coldplay ripped off the ashes of post-Britpop/Radiohead (somehow), instead of insert-inescapable-current-pop-trend here. Yes, this is Coldplay before they were the anthemic pop band they would be know for, and this more stripped back sound reveals hidden and surprising strengths. Don't Panic is surprisingly light on its feet thanks to that fast but quiet drum beat; within two seconds, Coldplay deliver a perfect slice of pop. Shiver reveals Coldplay can rock out but still be romantic and soulful a la Jeff Buckley (if you wanna accuse them of ripping an artist off, accuse them of ripping off Jeff Buckley. That accusation makes more sense than Radiohead, considering Thom Yorke was also lifting Buckley's tricks). High Speed has a nice spacy, dreamy vibe, showing the band has an interest in interesting sonic texture, which would serve them later on. However, the basic template sound also reveals known pitfalls. Yellow and Trouble are well-earned classic singles in Coldplay oeuvres. But if you listen to the other ballady songs on the album, you can tell the good reason they were not the singles; they're way too long and slow, and very superfluous in light of the existence of the singles. Spies is nice, but Sparks is meh, We Never Change is flat, and Everything's Not Lost sounds overwrought, like what a Coldplay song sounds like in the head of Coldplay-haters. (And of course, this album has inoffensive but still forgettable throwaway songs) It's a nice album and feels very early 2000s, but it does sound very basic in places, and you can't fault Coldplay from wanting to move on from that onto higher peaks. Strong 3 to light 4.

Alright. No more, no less.

Definitely had this cd and "A Rush of Blood to the Head" back in the day. Some of these songs are still great, "Shiver" is cool, "Sparks" is very pretty. I have never really liked "Yellow", despite otherwise being into early Coldplay. I think "Trouble" is one of their best overall songs. It's so funny to listen to these acoustic, piano, indie style songs and think about what Coldplay became 23 years later. Remember when Chris Martin would wear electrical tape around his fingers for fair trade or something?

Good harmless pop, losses energy in the second half

Never been a huge fan. But the album as a whole is good and easy to listen to.

Don't Panic* Shiver Sparks Yellow* Trouble* Enjoyed, some that I didn't know, nice chill music.

Not what I would typically listen to but I wouldn't say it was bad but I can't say I enjoyed it too much but maybe as I hear it more it could grow on me.

I enjoyed this more than I would have anticipated.

Rating: 3.1 Honorable mentions : Don’t panic, shiver, we never change Favorite( top two): sparks and trouble Least favorite (bottom two): parachutes and higher speed Notes: highs are highs low are mediocre at best. A lot of skips with a handful of gems.

I like this album, but seeing as I gave The Bends a 4, I don't think it can be any higher than that. I honestly like X&Y more.

Parachutes isn't half as bad as some people say it is, but I'm not sure it's a "must-listen" from front to end either. It has moments where it shines in a modest way though. It's simple, comforting, and fuss-free. I do miss this era of Coldplay. Tracks that stood out to me upon this revisit: 4 - Sparks; 5 - Yellow; 7 - Parachutes; 8 - High Speed; 10 - Everything's Not Lost (Life Is For The Living Would I revisit this album? Probably not.

Jo det er da hyggeligt nok

Boring and bland but not awful.

Too much mid-tempo melancholy. Well executed melancholy, and decent melodies. But please - give me something that won't put me to sleep.

Pretty good, very well produced. I think his voice bugs me for some unknown reason but I still enjoyed it overall.

Not a fan of Coldplay. I guess ok.

Not really my bag but I do see the appeal if you are in for something very chill and sort of pretty. I do like Yellow, though I am overall not huge on the singing throughout the album.

Ein paar gute Momente. Insgesamt eher langweilig.

Some good indie tropes here but it doesnt hit the same as it once did

Not bad but it all runs together. Good background music

Peak Chris Martin, beautiful voice. 3.5

Enjoyed

I knew of Coldplay and had heard some of their work but they have never been on my radar. I hadn't heard enough of them to form any kind of opinion so I was going into this pretty fresh. I found this to be a very solid debut album and an enjoyable listen. The overall tone of the album has a same-y vibe to it, not a lot of dynamic change but I was fine with that. I'd welcome another listen. This wasn't quite a 4 for me but it's better than a 3. I'd give it a 3.5.

This album was more enjoyable than I remember it. The vocals are slow and hold onto sustained whole notes while the bass and drums drive the song coldly forward. This album reminds me of days getting colder. Trying to get warm in first period after walking to my high school. I think Coldplay is still a little too poppy for my taste but I can get down with a couple of songs. Favorite tracks: Don't Panic, Trouble, High Speed

Ehh, kinda idk smarmy?

Coldplay nowadays might have fallen down the rabbithole of bland made-for-radio pop dross, but from their first couple albums you can see why they got so much acclaim and attention. Even if it isn't anything groundbreaking on here, it's just solid songwriting, great production, and great performances all around. Yellow really does stand out though, one of the most passionate and simple love songs you'll ever hear, and the way that guitar comes in at the start, amazing. The rest ranges from good to lovely, never dipping too high or too low. A very solid effort.

It’s ok… nothing too exciting. I was pulled in by Don’t Panic, but was pretty disappointed with the rest of the album, bar the single releases.

Nice voice and mournful music. I remember Yellow from when it was a single. Probably not something I'll listen to again.

Yes yes, everyone hates Coldplay! Easy chords, obvious lyrics, standard song structures- music by numbers? But controversially, particularly as I’m a metalhead, I actually like this album

I am supposed to love this because it was multi platinum selling album.i should love it because I once met one of them before they were famous, but I forget which. I should love it because my wife does, and my children and it at school concerts. I am suppose to hate this because it was EVERYWHERE and overplayed on Radio 2. Sitting alongside other vilified soft pop targets as James Blunt, David Grey and Bryan Adams. I never really hated it, nor loved it. It has some good sing along numbers, but doesn't really grip me much. I apologise for the lack of strong opinion.

Radiohead for your mom. This band is very capable of writing a great song, but again, I enjoyed them more often when they bring out the electric guitar over the bare acoustic tracks. I personally really like the drumming throughout the album and there are some interesting bass lines included too. Best Songs: Shiver Listen Again: Yes

Nice, chill piano-driven pop. I like this album, but I think the Viva La Vida - Mylo Xyloto era was so much stronger and even X&Y has more standout tracks. Most of this album blended together into a pleasant but not particularly memorable listening experience for me.

Quite alright. I was entertained and might go back and listen again. Good vocals and keys, though not that great variance through the album. The song spies was a pretty good listen.

Je suis parti avec un très mauvais a priori, et franchement le début s'écoute bien. Par contre "Yellow" (enfin, YelloOH") est reloue. Après c'est pas groundbreaking

Completely forgot I listened to this back in the day - I think I borrowed a school pal's CD because I remember it being kind of exciting that there's a hidden track. It's hard to imagine Coldplay as a new band. SAVOUR: Don't Panic

Know: All Favorites: Yellow

It was ok

Not my cup of tea but still some classics

Enjoyable listen, will probably add to library. Very different from their recent radio stuff

While some of the tracks don’t feel like complete thoughts, you can hear that this is a band that has imagination and is ready to explore. The potential of this band can be heard very early on.

Chill songs, good for relaxing, 6/10

don't panic - very well known but i do like the guitar, did take me back to hearing it when i was younger and having it in life insurance adds. shiver - i like the change in pace, the guitar build off is very sexy and rounds of the end of the vocals. i do feel like he could be more expressive tho. spies - gives me grian chatten vibes, having a sole acoustic guitar to start makes me feel closer to the music. i think this is my favourite track of the album. sparks - love me a base heavy opening, builds vibe. could be the modd im in but i do really feel the music, i like the building aaaaaAAAAA's. the use of the same base line through a few of the songs gives cohesiveness to the album Trouble - storytelling aspect is very pleasing, not one of the overplayed songs so got to appreciate the keys, very vaporwave-y. vocals are very clear and the acompanyment give the tonation and set the scene for the song. Parachutes - the bouncing guitar and base have a lovely effect after each line. contrast self realising lyrics with very upbeat and dreamy track. everything's not lost - not as dreamy, much more focus on keys and drums, don't feel it as much. does not have the great open mindedness of the other two tracks, the switch towards the end of the track does open up a bit more, the brass is nice but it does sound like some of the very popular cold play tracks with the harmonising. i thought the whole album was very interesting. i was definitely challenged with it being Coldplay and having my own preconceptions, tracks like yellow and don't panic were particularly difficult. but the rest was very good, i like the lyrics and some of the guitar was particularly good.

Какой же хорошей группой были Coldplay, какого хуя произошло Это же не хуже чем OK Computer епта 7/10

I dont really get all the Coldplay hype. I find it quite vanilla

Some classic tbf

Very 2000s. Sometimes it sounds like the Strokes, other times John Mayer. Pretty solid and consistent. Yellow is sooo good!

Pas pire pour coldplay

Easy listen. Like other albums by them better

To be fair back in 2000 I absolutely loved this album, then I stopped listening to Coldplay, was nice to have a relisten

Surprised by how "grunge" it sounded. Remembered a few tunes like "Yellow" and "Trouble" that I liked when the album was released, pleasant memories and enjoyed hearing them again. Overall, the album was a bit more slow paced than I usually like, more ephemeral than I'd like. Overall I'd say it was nice to listen to once, but I probably wouldn't again.

I like the variety of melodies. Not a fan of Coldplay after overhearing them on the radio. The album is quite listenable, gentle yet interesting at parts. Balanced. It doesn't have the hyper falsetto pop feel from current coldplay. 6/10 on a first listen, would probably rate it 7/10 later.

So for my First Album (of not many, the book this project is based on came out in 2005) of the new millennium. Parachutes was a pretty solid album and was definitely better than I was expecting. The singing and music was pretty well done and there wasn't a bad song at all. I was initially expecting to give this album a 2 but I will bump it up to a 3. Best Song: Sparks Worst Song: Life Is For Living

I must say I have a nostalgic soft spot for this album but with that being said this is still the bands best album by a country mile and they have went on to become one of the bands I dislike most in recent years. Why can’t they be like Blur and just age gracefully instead they now just release AI generated crappy pop songs you started as a promising indie band ffs!

Inoffensive

Het is Coldplay, that's it. That's the review. Favo: Trouble

Solidne 6/10

3/5. I was debating even giving this as high as a 4 star rating, but “you know how I know you’re gay? You listen to Coldplay.” I love the song Shiver, definitely the best song on the album.

Coldplay is such a down buzz I don’t understand why this band was so big.

Iha jees

I might have a bit of a soft spot for this one. Don't Panic would be a great song if it wasn't condensed to shit, it needs some air.

If I never hear Yellow again it will be too often and too soon. The rest of the record is… pleasant, I guess.

I liked this one a bit more than A Rush of Blood. But it’s still pretty meh. I mean it’s fine but it’s nothing I’m going to choose to put on and listen to again.

In terms of Coldplay, not bad. Unfortunately Coldplay is generally bad though

Competent

it's fine. their best album but not really interesting

I enjoyed this more than I though I would

-now THIS album and band i know -i’ve only heard sparks and yellow (both songs i love) -i do think some of coldplay is overrated but never their early stuff -dont panic was nice tbh -i do like coldplay and this album but idk if i love it -this is a 3 star album for me, but i did really enjoy listening to it

Classic Coldplay. Lots of it pretty slow, but nicely melodic

Not bad and really well put together musically but it just does not excite me in the slightest. I don't feel anything while I'm listening to it and if I forget because I am working on something I can listen to the whole album without any highlights or feeling like I need to stop to enjoy the music.

Over melancholy and monotonous

I'm not a big Coldplay fan anymore but I remember enjoying this album when it came out. It's still pretty easy to listen to, even if it's not my favorite music. The tracks I remember being singles are still the standouts. I didn't really hate any of the songs, just some less interesting tracks. I got 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' as an album earlier in this exercise and was very surprised by how much I actually enjoyed that album. This wasn't as strong as that one but still not bad. Standout Tracks: Don't Panic, Shiver, Yellow, Trouble

Early Coldplay is very good, this album fades a little in the second half though, not quite as good as rush of blood

Really nice chill album.

Enjoyed “Yellow”

Slow, vibey, kinda sad.

I mean, they might not be cool, but this is a solid album. Great musicianship, good production... Really good debut, honestly. Even if they felt kind of a watered-down Radiohead at the time. They are good! Maybe I'm just not always paying attention to lyrics. It's beige, but it is better than that Travis album, I think. I do like \"Why Does It Always Rain on Me?\" better than \"Yellow\" though. But overall, it's pretty solid.

Enjoyed this more the I expected, but still kind of a boring and safe album. 3 stars is a bit generous, more like 2.7

Better than other Coldplay I've heard without doubt! I don't think I'd go out of my way to listen to it. But its the kind ogfmusic that makes me happy that people get to make music. Its nice and shiny, this sweet wee intersection of brit pop and shoe gaze. I particularly like shiver. Cute little waltz. Nice interweaving of mathsy riffs with a pop song. But the lyrics certainly leave something to he desired. My mum told me that Coldplay weren't that bad and I should listen to this album when i was like 14 or 15 and I never got around to it so I'm happy I did.

was alr, liked half the songs

Pretty good album. I'd heard it a few times before. Coldplay always seems like Radiohead-lite (pretty sure this is a super cold take). I liked it fine, but hard to be excited about. 3.25/5

I liked it more than I imagined beforehand. I always thought that Coldplay was very poppy. Now I think it wasn’t at all. It was very experimental and mellow rock. I like a few songs but some other songs bore me a lot. A fun album but I don’t know if I would listen to it again. 3,0

I thought this was quite pleasant. I already know it's not my favourite Coldplay album though, and I have yet to listen to much of their discography outside of their most popular songs. It's quite chill and melancholy, but honestly I'm not sure I was quite in the mood for that. It teetered on the verge of becoming boring and definitely faded into the background at times, especially going into the second half of the album. Might be a good accompaniment for a bleak and depressed winter's day though. Favourite: Shiver

You got the lovers and the haters of this band, and if you heed either of them, they're both talking as if their opinion represented the one of 90% of the listeners. Don't know the percentage of the audience who fall into those two extremes, but I'm sure part of that latter category. My first reaction was to hate this band, I admit it. Well, apart from "Don't Panic", the simple yet illuminating opener of this debut album (also having some ironic overtones in its stellar chorus, if you pay a little attention). But yes, I was part of the haters, and I genuinely thought I couldn't stand the rest of this album after I browsed though it. Yet it was more because of the stupid comparisons with Radiohead from reviewers and other listeners than anything the band was doing themselves. Oranges and apples, you see. The *real* problem, however, was that I had not really listened to Coldplay albums at the time. At least while paying attention to them. Now I have, at least the first four--I'm not going to address their later career, which saw them turn into a shameful and cheesy pop act doing collabs with dumb K-pop bands, just because, well... streaming numbers! But if I go back to the early LPs, I can say that Coldplay deserved neither the raving praise nor the piled heaps of hatred and ignominy routinely thrown their way. They were just a decent band doing their thing. A little too bland at times (or many times, depending on the album). But they also had their moments. Case in point, "Shiver", the second track of *Parachutes*, which goes from lively to innocuous in the space of mere seconds. What about the rest, then? "Spies" is a good pop rock cut, a little safe, but still pleasant. Which is not the case of the borefest "Sparks", lacking any of them titular sparks to light any fire in your heart, ironically. "Yellow" and "Trouble" are signature songs of the band, which means there's something to them. They're certainly among the most inspired cuts in the album, thanks to their catchy guitar licks. The title-track that follows those two highlights, "Parachutes", is an interesting miniature cut, only lasting 45 seconds. Far from essential given its nature, yet smartly placed in the tracklisting to elicit curiosity. Then comes "High Speed", whose title betrays its slower languid contents. "We Never Change" goes back to the sort of acoustic moodpiece "Sparks" already displayed, with no better luck. Fortunately, Closer "Everything's Not Lost" explores more soulful territory, and I think the band made a great find with the chords they're using here. It's another VERY languid torch song, mark my words, but there's a timelessness to this composition that makes it endearing, all things considered. Finally, there's a short nameless hidden track after that official closer, but it adds nothing relevant to the whole thing, in spite of its instrumentation apparently using an accordion (or "bandoleon"). That's it folks. A striking flaw in this record is that it lacks bite overall, obviously. But I would lie if I said the music that's played here is "bad". Feeling benevolent today, *Parachutes* will therefore go to my "waiting room". Maybe *A Rush Of Blood To The Head* and *Viva La Vida* will join it later on. I doubt there's gonna be room left for any of them in my final list. But you never know. After all, "we live in a beautiful world", where miracles happen sometimes. Or do they? 3/5 for the purposes of this list. Which translates to a 8/10 grade for more general purposes (5+3). Next, please. Number of albums left to review: 496 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 239 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 115 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 147

My first thought when I got this Coldplay album was another shit pop album. But as I listened to it I realized that Coldplay received a lot of unnecessary most likely from their later blander pop music. This was to me a pretty solid album. The instrumentals are unique but reminiscent of some typical British pop rock with more niche instruments. Chris Martin is a good singer whether people want to admit that or not. Yellow is a modern day classic song although it is 23 years old now. Overall this was a good album and does show first albums sometimes are a bands best. This album surprised me and I would listen to most of it again. 7.3/10

Pretty boring album, but a 3 because Yellow is a really good song

My wife loves it and I just wish someone would take away Chris Martin's valium.

Solid, some real classics despite their reputation.

Coldplay's debut 'Parachutes' is a post-brit pop/pop-rock album. There are some songs that I like as much as I did 23 years ago when they came out - Trouble and Yellow, for example. However, the songs on the album don't have too much variety, they are similar to each other and musically they are quite simplistic with low energy and melancholy. The production work on the album is great though. Overall, it is a average/good debut but it isn't something that would deserve a very good rating (strong 4 or 5).

Solid album, esp the first half. Classics. Although I don’t really mess with Coldplay in general, this is them at their best and was definitely a time.

already listened to it. thought it was alright

Decent consistent sound, but the classics 'yellow', 'don't panic', 'trouble' all stand out. 'Sparks' also very good low energy sound

Good ol’ pleasant and nice and safe and bland Coldplay

C O L D P L A Y™️

Not bad. Decent background music.

I'd never really listened to this album before despite hearing various songs here and there. There's some nice songs in here though. It's also a lot more chilled than I realised. There's a lot of interesting floaty guitar tracks running through it. Sparks is really nice, I really love the mood on that track. Other standouts for me are Don't Panic and Trouble. Ps: I really like the album cover. Very simple but impactful.

It’s in the same category as anything equally “haphazard lovely melancholic” it’s certainly not bad, thoughtful at times but just as bland as the best whiny rockstars. Again, lovely, just truly lovely, but not for me. Substance, the thing past your most basic white-privileged emotions, are needed. Some wildly creative takes on tales of boring, vanilla emotions but they are, at best, transitional music for the most pop-loving lads and gals. Very much produced to the masses, not remotely the Radiohead-vibe they prob wish they were. But that’s alright, if it’s a basic day then this album is for you. Coldplay isn’t for those who feel deep and want to explore the dark, I wish them well. 🫡

I reckon if you played this album to people without the name attached, the ratings would be much higher. Yes their recent work is pop trash but their first few records were fantastic. Excellent debut but I prefer their 2nd & 3rd records overall

I am no Coldplay fanboy, but this chill, highly polished, pop/soft-rock album is not as bad as the cool kids want to pretend it is. When I am in the mood, (and I do have to be in the mood), Parachutes is pleasant, dreamy, emotional, relaxing, and truly unoffensive.

Coldplay on hyvä bändi

Thoughts before listening: Unsure about Coldplay - some of their songs, namely “Paradise” and “Viva La Vida” featuring quite heavily within my Childhood. While I can respect them for the high level of musicianship I’ve always found myself not revisiting their music due to it seeming rather cliche and faux emotional in my head when I remember my childhood. Maybe I’ll be proved wrong. Thoughts after listening: I ended up enjoying this a lot more than I thought I would. A very concise and well orchestrated album, exploring a lot more of an introspective sound than Coldplay later become known for in their stadium fillers. I enjoyed all of the tracks on this album and it has encouraged me to go listen to some of Coldplays later albums - im sure I won’t feel the same way about those as I did this one but this was very different to what I expected and I ended up loving it. Favourite tracks: “Don’t Panic”, “Yellow”, and “High Speed” 3/5

muy lindo y tranquilito, me arrepiento de haber mirado a webo a coldplay antes. no es mucho mi estilo pero lo aprecio.

Alot of the songs sound the same

3.8 + What a wild trajectory Coldplay has had given this rather unassuming debut - a pretty record with subtle and intimate production. I especially like the overwrought guitar voicing on "Shiver" and Martin's breathy vocals on the verses of "Don't Panic." Perhaps the stadium-filling bombast of Coldplay's later outings can be traced to the big chorus on "Yellow." If they had perhaps tamped down their ambitions slightly and proceeded in a more artful direction, they probably wouldn't have landed the Super Bowl halftime. Good on them, I suppose.

Some very beautiful songs, but most, at least for me, drag on a bit too much. Still a fairly good debut record that set up a nice stage for a long run of semi great records in the years to come! Favorite lyrics: - I awake to find no peace of mind. Favorite songs: - Don't Panic - Shiver - Spies - Sparks - Yellow - Trouble - High Speed 7 out of 10

Coldplay's album Parachutes is one I've heard a good bit of over the years. For a debut album it was a massive commercial success with multiple popular singles; impressive in my book. Coldplay definitely gives me U2 vibes and in my book that's a good thing. They're a very solid example of a more chill rock band that has the ability to write catchy songs. I don't dislike the album but I don't think it's enough for me to be an album I listen to a ton of.

Carries some nostalgia Guess I don't find it as offensive as some ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Better than I expected.

Sounds like something that would be on at American Eagle Outfitters. It’s good for background music.

Kinda just ehhhh. It’s a very easy listen with lots of catchy instrumentals and riffs, and Chris Martin’s vocals are also really nice, but the lyrics kind of make it not have any lasting impact. As soon as a song is off I forgot what it was even about or what emotion it conveyed. 6/10

Good pop, but it gets old real quick. It's just not my kind. That said, it's a strong first album.

An overall nice album that I'm not fan of, but that is surely important in this decade. Great pop songs, distinctive singing, a sound of their own.

Their best album

Good record

Yellow is the hit off of this for a reason. Everything else kind of blurred together.

Prima, singer-songer writer, iets te traag

le deberian pagar regalias a thom por este album

As a full album, I'd say it's kind of boring. I used to listen to this back then but if you were to ask me if i remember any of these songs. I'd tell you i recognize like 3-4 of them. But those 3-4 songs I really like. Overall it's fine but not something I'd need to listen to as a whole.

the epitome of light rock in the y2k era. Can't discount the sound quality of this album but just mediocre for me

Leuk album, met soms nog leukere nummers. Toch mis ik het kippenvel gevoel. Het blijft een beetje hangen op de 13 in een dozijn popmuziek.

It wasn't bad but not my style.

Do you know Coldplay is one of the best-selling bands worldwide since 2000. This is a perfectly fine debut. Innocuous. I think I own it. I probably haven't played it since the year it was released. But, it is perfectly fine.

This is a good, extremely well produced debut album. Sounded different than other “rock” records of the time. It ushered in a lot of more musically introspective bands. Kind of surprising how this launched Coldplay as a stadium headliner.

Especially with Spies as a surprise highlight, I have to admit that the bones are stronger than I want to give them credit for. Still annoying that they don't totally obtain, and that the vast majority of bands that used the electronic bits made them seem much, much worse. Short and hidden tracks on the slowdown back half are good ideas.

Meh. Overrated but popular.

It was easy listening and I enjoyed most of the album. 3*

Radio head vibes but more commercial. Really this is 3.5 star for me. I could see listening to it again, but not a ton.

I get that Coldplay has achieved somewhat of a meme status in popular culture, but as a sensitive crybaby Aquarian, I enjoy how watery and emotional this album is. It’s not like, something I’d ever wanna go see live, but yeah, it’s a good one to listen to while moping in front of a heater eating a tortilla.

The vibe of the early 2000s. I never listened to much Coldplay, the hits are nostalgic and his voice is actually really beautiful but most of the songs were kinda blah. 3/5

This is the second album of theirs that I have gotten. Being their debut album, I found myself enjoying this one just a bit less than the other one which had most of their biggest hits. This album is ok on its own, although his voice does get a bit whiny here and there. Decent music.

It's alright, love shiver but it's otherwise pretty much one gear the whole way through. Think it was fairly unique at the time, guess it's not their fault they were followed by a dozen other bands doing the same thing.

I enjoyed it slightly more than I thought I would, but it isn't half dreary. Still finding their feet, I guess. Most of the album tracks are forgettable.

I don't mind Coldplay too much, unfortunately their stuff is overplayed. However, apart from their singles I'm not sure I've ever properly listened to a Coldplay album. This debut album is pretty good, I liked a lot more of the tracks than I thought I would. But by the end I did get a little tired of the melancholy. Highlights were "Shiver", "Yellow" and "Spies".

I've only heard Coldplay via shows like SNL or when Chris Martin has guested on TV shows (Modern Family, Extras, Simpsons). They try hard to portray themselves as a sensitive, sentimental pop band than wants to be loved. I've read the backlash and hatred towards Coldplay that puts them in a similar category with Nickleback and James Blunt, songwriters/musicians that cause a divisive reaction when their music is played. If you put those opinions aside, what we have is an average British pop band that is somewhat overrated and musically nothing special. At first glance, they sound pleasant and positive, but after listening to the entire album, they leave me with a feeling of over-compensating sincerity. One listen was enough, I don't need to hear more and yes, I'm starting to believe the anti-Coldplay hype is justified.

Listenable background music. Songs blend together in a way that makes the album feel longer than it is. The predictable and repetitive melodies make the songs easy to follow and sing along to but there's nothing surprising on the album.

““Yellow”? Hey, more like beige, lads, am I right? HAR HAR HAR!” It’s more fashionable to hate Coldplay than just about any other band going, and I’m still not totally sure why. Throughout their transition from an intimate guitar-based indie rock outfit, to bearers of pop-rock torch anthems, to a pristine stadium-filling pop act with a roster of guest artists, they have seemed to alienate every camp of music fan. “Parachutes” takes us back to the very beginning, which saw grand and epic songs sitting alongside rough throwaways. They’re a young start-up band here, for better and worse. The simplest songs are the strongest, with “Don’t Panic” and “Yellow” doling out fragile, sincere emotion with pleading eyes and shaking hands. They’re beautiful, and require little more than a verse and chorus, three chords each. Later, the build up in “Everything’s Not Lost” gives a juicy bit of gravitas and euphoria to the album’s end, saving it from becoming a little too colourless in the home stretch. Chris Martin’s signature falsetto is nicely judged throughout, undeserving of the vicious barbs it gets thrown at it. But it’s Jonny Buckland who gives the record’s standout performances with distinctive, accomplished guitar lines. At once emotive, tasteful, and varied, he gives many of these songs some much needed colour if Martin’s voice or songwriting fails. Their interplay is on finest display in the terrific “Shiver”, another album highlight which I hadn’t heard before. Moving on to the weak spots: “Sparks” and “We Never Change” are both dirge-like and forgettable with cloying 3/4 strumming patterns and a failure to grasp any emotional heft. My impression was that “Spies” and “High Speed” wanted to be dark and mysterious, but between trite lyrics and Martin’s earnest, unadorned voice they don’t quite convey anything besides filler. And “Parachutes”, a 43 second interlude, is utterly pointless. I return to the theory that Coldplay have degenerated with time, becoming shells of their former selves. Any die-hard “Parachutes” fan insisting their lyrics peaked early could surely not defend “I want to fly, and never come down; and live my life, and have friends around.” Any champion of a “more stripped back production” could surely not listen to the uber-compressed intro of “Shiver”, with clipping left right and centre, and insist it was a better job than their later work. “Over-produced” doesn’t always equal “bad corporate sell-out trash”. The point is, much of Coldplay’s earlier work was more flawed than some fans probably care to admit, and much of what they’re doing now probably has more merit than some fans would be comfortable with. I take my hat off to them for evolving and staying aloft for over twenty years, whichever direction their music might go. “Parachutes” is no more than one step in their journey.

Easy to listen too, great as vibes, I want to learn trouble on the piano. I remember hearing the song yellow a lot on the radio and in general. I think my favorite song is sparks or dont panic.

semmonen...semmomen homma että on hyvä albumi... vittu. NIIN VITUN! And it's all yeah ok.

A mid tempo early 2000s classic. Yellow is the big hit but there are a lot of fine songs here. FIlled with beautiful melodies and plaintive singing, this album perfectly expresses the Coldplay sound. I expected it to be more up tempo and was taken aback on first listen. I warmed up to it on the second time around and it may even get a 3rd listen at some point. 3.5 stars

Overall decent. Follow up album was better IMO but this one was different for the time.

скукотища как всегда британские нытики хахахаха

Ok. I didn’t like as well as the other one

Had a lot more to it than my preconcieved notion of it.

It's a very interesting coincidence, that this album came out on the list just after another debut album of Fleet Foxes. I can see many parallels between those two records, and it actually gives me intriguing perspective in regards to how to rate "Parachutes". The difference from one to the other is not big enough to constitute a better rating, just because Coldplay is a more well-known band and I knew and like couple of their singles before. I always thought of Coldplay as a music equivalent of Paulo Coelho books. On one hand it's because of the similarities in the names of their most known work - "Scientist" and "Alchemist", but also because they pretend to be much more 'intellectual' and introspective than they actually are. While I know this might be a gross exaggeration on the Coldplay part, there might be a piece of truth in it. "Parachutes" is an okayish rock/pop album, with very simple, but catchy melodies, and good, but at times unbearable, Chris Martin's vocal. The songs, when listening to them separately, sound perfect for a chilled radio session in your garden, but as a whole, the album becomes incredibly corny and the songs seem identical, like the band is unable to change the gear (highest gear when going only 20mph). I like the songs and I'm going to appreciate them whenever I hear them on the radio, but I will probably never listen to the whole album again.

This is a consistently good album. Varied in instrumentation and pace. Good singing by what's his name too! Hasn't really aged, or feel of its time, even though it's 22 years old.

Mostly dull and the songs are too similar. Maybe 3 songs are worth it.

Not as good as their second album, better than everything that followed that though. Yellow, Trouble, Don't Panic, Spies are all good.

Not as good as Rush of Blood to the Head, but still some really good tracks on it, and fits well together. That opening couple of tracks (I really don't like Yellow, the success of that followed by The Scientist on the next album sent the band down a direction that I really didn't like) is great, Shiver being my favourite. There's not a bad song on the album, but there's not as much that elevates it as Rush of Blood to the Head. 3/5.

nostalgic bc I loved them when I was younger & it’s obv their best album

Still sounds pretty good to me.

catchy 3.

Quick listen, didn’t capture my attention.

Not as bad as some people make out but also not as great as others say. Chris Martin should really sing an octave lower, not that falsetto he goes for. I heard it once and it's much better. There are a couple of good tracks her but the mastering on Shiver made me really angry. Once all the instruments kick it I kept thinking my speakers were clipping but no, it's just their crappy production.

It's not bad, but it is dull. I get why people like this, but I'm not one of them. I don't need to listen to this again.

Can anything sound bad after Kid Rock? I don't love everything here, but it's very listenable. Yellow is pretty strong. It's at least fine background.

An album that's always pretty good and thoroughly enjoyable and easy to listen to but also suffers from a lack of really grabbing songs or exceptional moments.

Not a bad album, but less engaging than A Rush Of Blood To The Head

Good but not great. Made my workout difficult. Not quite my tempo. Wouldn't do a cover of one of the songs

Good album. Liked a variety of the songs but can’t say they were all too good. Didn’t love it but didn’t dislike it one I would return to again for a easy listen

Meh. Didn't love or hate. Not a big fan of the the style, but it was catchy enough. I think it's slightly better than a 3 but not a four. On a scale of 10 I'd give it a 6.5.

They divide opinion - but that's because they sit perfectly in the middle. This album is as 3 as a 5 star rating gets. In today's world where you can all too easily offend, this is beautifully inoffensive.

Heard before: only in bits Coldplay have some big songs, but I’ve never been able to get into their albums. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would (the vocal melodies were unexpected and great), but although the production sounded great at first, eventually the album sounded a little monotonous to me.

Mellow and nice album to listen to. Would definitely play again, however it didn't leave a huge mark on me, therefore 3/5.

Had heard Shiver, Yellow and Trouble before as singles and they definitely carry this album. High Speed isn't bad either. 5/1001

default but i enjoyed it

balanced neutral. Had some popular bangers but I'm not huge on coldplay

Not as great as I remember

Tolerable I suppose. only because i like Yellow

Man I haven't even thought of Coldplay since like 2011. Some of these songs are great, they just got super shitty after like 2011. Can't listen without thinking of 40 year old virgin

An interesting retroflection on Coldplay's earliest artistic focus now that they've fully jumped the musical shark for profit's sake. This LP expertly rides the line between singer-songwriter (plenty of acoustic/soft vocals throughout) and the burgeoning early-aughts indie rock of the time, given that it's not afraid to throw in a healthy dose of overdrive/reverb or even delve a little into gazier, washed-out tones. Things do get into Radiohead-lite territory on the back half and drag just a tad, but this is still a worthy artistic product in its own right and a great listen at that.

I knew going in I probably wouldn’t enjoy this album seeing as I’m not a big Coldplay fan. Just are to slow and relaxed for my taste. And that’s kinda what the album is for the most part, albeit with some exceptions still not horrible, not great.

Most redeeming quality is that it's so early 2000's sounding it's like a historical record of it's time. Sounded like a mix between the dying breath of the 90's optimism with a soft overly polished sound of the 2000's.

Don't Panic - 6/10 Shiver - 7/10 Spies - 8/10 Sparks - 5/10 Yellow - 10/10 Trouble - 6/10 Parachutes - 7/10 High Speed - 7/10 We Never Change - 8/10 Everything's Not Lost - 9/10 Life is for Living - 6/10

5/10. I always kinda thought people were too hard on Coldplay fans, but now that I know how mediocre some of their songs are I've decided they deserve it.

Very low-tempo. 6/10

Favorite song: Shiver, We Never Change, Don’t Panic

Coldplay. It's either Love or Hate. Those that love the band probably outnumber the haters, but Overall: Excellent ( but after listening to it all day. I'm really tired of hearing it). Standouts: "Don't Panic", "Shiver", "Yellow", "Trouble" 3.5/5

Wow. I never thought I'd see myself enjoying a Coldplay album, but here we are. This is actually not bad at all. I definitely hear the Radiohead influence, but there's nothing wrong with that. Pretty solid, easy listening.

Light 3

I liked this album a lot high school but don’t listen to Coldplay much anymore. This is mostly a nostalgia rating

3.5 Definitely a warmup to “Rush of Blood” in my opinion, but Shiver & Yellow are as good as anything on that album

I forget who it was that described Coldplay as making ‘music for bedwetters’. Alan McGee, probably. Unfair. But you know where he is coming from. Something linking Coldplay and McGee’s golden goose, Oasis, is that I have no idea who produced the albums of either. It’s not that producers are usually high profile, but most of the best do have a distinct thumbprint. With the two, nowt. (Also: Coldplay swallowed Brian Eno live. This suggests a black hole of conventionality, or a curiously ruthless streak. Hard to say which of course he two.)

Enjoyable to listen to in the background, but probably wouldn’t give another active listen. Starts to blend together a bit. Stand outs were Yellow and Trouble. Spies was kind of a miss for me. Felt like it really got going near the middle but then came back down near the end.

Good album to be earnest… some inspired guitarwork and catchy drums + charming songs

I pick on Coldplay but I found this album to be much better than expected.

some hits and misses but by far their best album

With Coldplay’s success they became the new U2, the band that it became cool to hate. I agree they are overrated and there latest music has been all garbage, but this is a great album along with their other early stuff and should be on the list. Sadly Chris Martin is just as annoying as Bono though.

Well, this was unexpected. I like some Coldpay songs, mostly the more uptempo mid-career singles, and I turned this on counting on a slog with only one recognizable song, "Yellow", which...ugh. To my surprise, "Yellow" held up way better than I gave it credit for, plus there was "Trouble" which is superior and which I'd totally forgotten existed. Beyond that, well-crafted songs, and gorgeous production. I'd probably need to be in the right mood, but I'd return to it.

So, I have to admit to a large amount of anti-coldplay bias. Along with Stereophonics they represent the death knell of the 90s, of my teenage years / childhood and not in a nostalgic way. A decade of music that excited me at the time but ended with a monotonous slump, both of these bands (along with Muse and a few other suspects) were its soundtrack. They felt like copycats, riding on earlier glory, but without the edge or tension that made the originals. Coldplay felt like Radiohead with the teeth removed. Stereophonics a Faces/Oasis covers band that got lucky. I'm probably being a bit harsh, but I was 21 and pissed off. They were everywhere, presumably because there was nothing else new and remotely exciting happening. I'd spent 3 years at uni unplugged from charts, TV or current trends, listening instead to the back cats of the likes of the beach boys, the kinks, the beatles, Pink Floyd, Tom Waits, wierd amazing jazz and loads of other stuff. Back in my home town, I stuck my head above the parapet and everything had gone to shit. Things got better, eventually there were some new bands, a bit of the old chaos returned with the likes of the strokes and the libertines...but mainly I went back to back cat diving and moved further from the music that originally inspired me. Now I better see the flux and wain of exciting music, waves of excellence quickly pass, but when you hit them at the right time they are truly beautiful...when they go, you are left with Coldplay and the Stereophonics and that empty feeling that somehow things could be better, but just aren't. It ok though, cause someday another wave will come...or maybe it won't, but you can find it if you look in the right places. I listened to Parachutes on my early morning dog walk. It's a well made record, whiny and lacking any real tension, but sounds alright. A bit dull but pretty inoffensive. I noticed it starts with a track called Don't Panic. From where i now sit, its mostly harmless...

It's alright

I like Coldplay, but they get boring after a bit

This is a band with which I am definitely familiar but who I missed entirely when they first broke into the airplay scene. I had heard a couple of these tracks, I think, but never really gave them a listen, and most songs on this album are entirely new to me. I didn't really know what to expect as the album started playing but looking back, I think I had a bias against them for some reason (don't know why -- maybe someone mentioned to me at some point that they didn't like them or something like that, who knows). I just let it play through, and I like it more than I thought I would (based on that bias of unknown origin I just mentioned). I don't hear it as all that bold or original, yet there is enough there in the music to keep my interest. If it weren't, I probably would dismiss this album entirely as just too bland and saccharine. It does get a little repetitious, but it's not too bad. I hear some good songwriting and solid performances. Nothing earth-shattering, but good music doesn't have to be. I don't think I'll seek this out all that actively, but it's decent.

I can't say I particularly enjoy Coldplay, a lot of their songs are sappy as hell and a little too soft sounding for my taste. I came into this album ready to dismiss it, but after my listen I will admit I may have pre-judged a little too hard. While this still isn't my particular taste, I found the music to be technically competent (although not virtuous), the songwriting is consistent, and the production is good throughout. Additionally, given the time this album came out, it was certainly influential in shaping pop/alt rock for the two decades since. I will begrudgingly admit that without this album, we probably wouldn't have a lot of modern artists like Bon Iver, Kings of Leon, The Killers, Mumford and Sons, Half Moon Run, etc. These guys were, and still are massively successful, and I think that pandering to as wide of an audience as possible is a skill in it's own right. Overall not my thing, but I do believe it has earned it's place on this list. Fav Tracks: Spies, Yellow

Ubiquitous, understandably.

A little slow for me

It’s a great debut pop record but I’ve heard better considering this is all about albums before you die

The 1001 Albums Project sometimes takes from Anthrax to Coldplay. And that's ok! Let 1001 flowers bloom. I'm not a Coldplay fan in particular but I also don't hate them like many people seem to. I'm not familiar with this album but first impression: pretty good album art. Getting started, relaxed very Coldplay sounding opening song. Then on to Shiver, which I really don't like. Sparks is pretty and Yellow is a nice enough song if a bit nonsensical. In general Side A is mellow and medium lovely but Side B settles into low-key boring. In any case, the songs don't ask too much of the listener. This album is probably fine if you are in the mood. Today I didn't happen to be.

Can’t get into them

cute and coldplayish. some nostalgic vibes.

Not my thing but I can appreciate it.

I would be lying if I said I hate this album. There are a few songs I really like on the album, namely Don't Panic and I admit that Yellow probably wasn't bad before hearing it 800,000 times rendered it unlistenable for me. This is Coldplay before Chris Martin disappeared completely up his own ego and there are some shining moments as well as some floundering ones as the band were searching for their own sound. It is a soundtrack to what they could've been along with what they became. Love or hate Coldplay now but Parachutes is a solid debut.

I probably would have loved this back in the '80s

AND IT WAS ALL YELLOW BABY Favorites: Shiver Trouble Everything's Not Lost

Pleasant enough, but not super interesting to me. 3 stars.

Day 5 of isolation: I'm daydreaming of walking along the beach like Chris Martin belting Yellow

Oh what could have been Coldplay have released some utter tripe in the last few years, but this is a pretty promising debut (and the second album isn't bad either!) The one-two opener of Don't Panic and Shiver is great, and there's some really lovely if not super original stuff on here. I don't know if I'd revisit the whole thing but it was decent

Not a bad opener.

Brings back memories of being fed up with all the music on the radio sounding like Coldplay. And it's not like that period lasted a day or two: it took years till we got rid of that Coldplay sound. Anthropologists are even suggesting those times never ended, it's just that we don't listen to the radio anymore.

Always thought they ripped off Radiohead. But still a guilty pleasure album. At times, the mix sounded distorted. Tried different devices, settings, same. Don’t know if Spotify or something in my end

Virou até trilha sonora de novela brasileira. Meu pai adora. Eu confesso que de tanto ouvir, já enjoei um pouco.

I don't hate coldplay like lots of people do, I think they have a few classic songs that are pretty affective when I'm in the right mood, like the yellow one. Also they always make me think of my sister because she is very very into Coldplay

Предисловие: оценка будет максимально не объективная, у меня сегодня был ужасный день, попытаюсь что-то выжать из себя, дать оценку, и хотябы дослушать. Always said that I hate Coldplay, but tried to listen to this with an open mind. I reaffirmed that I’m not wild about Chris Martin’s vocals, and overall Coldplay as a band is just a bit too smooth and bland for my tastes from a rock group. But overall, it’s not awful and you can’t deny the singles and airplay from this debut album. I wanted to give it a 2 or 3, but, if I’m being honest-4.

Its okay but not something I'd choose to listen to.

Their first and their best, while they were still a more accessible and innocent Radiohead, before they were LITERALLY AND UNAVOIDABLY EVERYWHERE OH MY GOD PLEASE JUST SHUT UP.

Decent, nothing more. I listened to it a fair bit when it came out though so probably bumps it up a star more than it deserves

Decent enough. I find Chris’ voice to become a bit insufferable after a while. Singles from this album are good.

Coldplay are shit. This is not shit.

Oh man. I loved Coldplay in high school. I still do, but I did back then, too. I probably haven't listened to this album since then, so it was nice to revisit it. Though not my favorite Coldplay album (Viva Viva La Vida), it's still good and has some great songs. I read on Wikipedia that It's one of the highest selling records of all time in the UK (45th of all time). The Wiki page also said this: "In fact, a few critics have suggested that the album's commercial success was due in part to a portion of Radiohead's audience being alienated by the band's experimental and more electronic-influenced Kid A album." Eek. Again, I like Parachutes. But I hope everyone gave Kid A another chance, because it's definitely the better album of the two.

Coldplay? More like lukewarm. There aren't any standout tracks for me on this album that are really good or bad. No matter how much of a hipster you are, you have to admit Clocks is a fucking banger. But sadly not a banger that's on this album. Fave track: Trouble. But honestly the album is a bit of a pleasant snoozefest. Inoffensive, but I'd never claim it's something that truly deserves to be on this list. A solid meh.

Packs so much emotion; not overly revolutionary or forward thinking but just great music; incredibly consistent YELLOW

30th December 2021 Listened in the morning on the 31st while working in bed before Adna, Joe and Meg came round for NYE! Coldplay get a lot of shit but this album has its moments. Chris Martin's falsetto and soft musicality do strike chords throughout.

I actually enjoyed this more listening to it now than I remember it. They are a better band then I give them credit for.

3.2 - some solid songs on here and enjoyed this more than unexpected. Definitely a moody feel to most of the album, but a decent background soundtrack to zone out to.

I think coldplay has a very specific sound. I have gone most of my life without listening to them. Yellow fucks Can't lie about that one. Rest of the album is kind of meh to me. It's not as bad as I've always heard everyone say. Feels like that might come from a dash of pretentiousness.

Classic Coldplay, very lowkey and such. Minimalist, soothing vocals. Honestly just kind of blends together, but good for when you just want sound.

Songs are all well-crafted, and nothing overtly terrible but man is this boring. Don't really understand why this was so popular at the time. I liked "Yellow" and "Trouble" even though (because?) I've heard them 1000 times, but otherwise pretty forgettable.

As someone who rarely listened to Coldplay, felt it was quite forgettable. Not bad but didn't make a big impact on me. Best song was: Everything's not lost and shiver. 3/5

Don't panic and yellow are great, and for coming out in 2000 I think this is great, but there are other albums I like more.

I'm not a hater.

I was surprised by how well the good songs have dated. Lesser songs are still throwaway and the back half really drops off.

This is the debut album from alternative rock band Coldplay. It released to commercial success, eventually being certified double platinum. Classic guitar playing, beautiful singing, and songs with emotional depth comprise this album. "Yellow" & "Don't Panic" are the best songs imo. I don't believe I had listened to Coldplay's first album before, so I'm glad I did now.

You can’t trust people … But this is actually a half-decent album

Is this the album that kicked off the 2000s indie rock trend? Maybe.....To me (an uneducated individual) it certainly feels like it. It feels almost unfair rating albums I've heard many more times than others but oh well

Probably on album I actually appreciate more now than at the time - maybe because of the music they make these days? The hooks are strong and the bass and guitar parts compliment each other nicely. Don't Panic and Shiver are underrated early singles. There are hints (Everything's Not Lost) of Coldplay becoming *too* bland, and the lyrics too banal, to really enjoy, but in general I don't mind of bit of melodic soft-rock. It's not a masterpiece but it remains one of their better efforts. 3.5. Deal with it.

Not bad, but most of the songs were kinda forgettable

I used to use this album as a sleep aid. Not touched it for years, but it still has that same effect. So for the purpose of winding down in the evening in bed, this fits the bill. It is pretty comfortably their best offering for this reason. Shiver and Spies are both pretty decent tunes. Probably the best on the album. 3/5

I've never been the biggest Coldplay fan. I enjoyed this though. Some of the acoustic stuff I found a bit vanilla. But there are some good songs on here. When they get their groove on it's good.

Solid debut album.

Couple of very good songs but the rest is a bit dull.

Was never a big Coldplay fan but it was interesting to listen to this. A lot space-ier and chilled than what they're known for now. Not a converting moment or anything but still a not unpleasant listen.

Okay coldplay stans ... you win this time ...

There’s a time and a place for this kind of stuff, I’m not entirely convinced it’s on the main stage, on a Saturday night, of the world’s biggest festivals. Right now the middle with 3 stars

I don't like Coldplay

I don't hate this. It's a little low energy throughout but there are a few tracks I enjoyed. I guess I'll give it a 3 even though its probably a 2.5.

Certainly competent, it's got a pretty well-worn sound for it's genre... Overall, though, and particularly lyrically, pretty lightweight.

A little too slow at times, and I got sick of "Yellow" a long time ago, but I like "Don't Panic," "Shiver," "Spies," and "Everything's Not Lost."
