Reviews (page 7 of 14)
Good album
Contemporary romantic pop. Coldplay has been fabulously successful with catchy melodies, easy listening guitars and keyboards, and Chris Martin's baritone warbling plaintively about how deeply in love he is. The tunes are solid and entertaining -- Yellow is the best known here and my favorite, but Sparks and Trouble are good as well -- but the sound as a whole is too fluffy and round to get anyone really excited. It's well-crafted pop with no pretensions to be anything more and as such can't aspire to top marks.
This was when I liked Cold Play! Some memorable songs and a definitive, trippy alternative sound. Early Coldplay when you thought they had a chance at great things but then jumped the shark later.
Modern day yacht rock. The yodel whining gets old, but otherwise the album is beautifully done. Perfect for a rainy afternoon or Sunday listening.
good stuff
Let's put to one side the all encompassing soulless, beigeness that Coldplay have become and look at this album on its merits. This debut was genuinely exciting when it landed. There are some killer pop tracks in this and the album doesn't seem like filler. They know how to write a really good melody for vocal and guitar and I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would.
Awesome. I love music
Not bad — Radiohead comparisons were no exaggerations. Does get good at times.
Dream rock, stadium rock...whatever you want to call it. It's like guilty pleasure music. Guilty only because of how much shit they get. I had never listened to a whole Coldplay album until today but I've heard most of their songs at different times. I can see why this is on the list. Not a bad song on it.
3.5/5 Surprised me as I have only heard negative comments about Coldplay, they sound like Radiohead if they werent depressed
Classic. Do not understand why Coldplay get so much hate.
Uplifting, sincere, good sound
Uplifting sincere good musical arrangement
I love this album! Many great songs, a couple a bit boring to be all next to each other. Good stuff
falls off after a while but really solid, the singles are pretty great
Soothing
I love old Coldplay. I am partial to Rush Of Blood to the Head and X&Y. But I still really enjoyed the album!
Have the cd
Leur 1er album. Très bon
B+ Don't Panic 4 Shiver 5 Spies 4 Sparks 5 Yellow 3 Trouble 4 Parachutes 3 High Speed 3 We Never Change 3 Everything's Not Lost 4 A Rush of Blood to the Head > and anyone who thinks differently is a certifiable moron.
Don't Panic - Pleasant melody; nice, simple opener to album. Shiver - Heartfelt singing, call and response between singing and guitar; bittersweet, unhealthy relationship. Spies - Shares similarities to Stereophonics, unsure what song is about, perhaps slightly too long. Sparks - Bass mixed more heavily here, singing more baritone for the most part, likely alluding to beginning of relationships. Yellow - Potentially Coldplay's greatest song, everything heavier on third beat, beautiful lead and backing vocals in chorus, song about lengths narrator has gone for love. Trouble - More reflective, piano plays a larger role, quite sad when contrasted with 'Yellow', narrator feels trapped with motif of 'web' alluding to this. Parachutes - Titular track, stripped back, essentially an interlude. High Speed - delicate lead guitar, bass only noticeable in bridge and chorus, motif of bubble returns (connoting ideas of fragility, perhaps relationship is about to end), high speed implies recklessness. We Never Change - Narrator talking about future hopes and aspirations, quite melancholic; despite hopes, narrator knows they are stuck, images of flying further referring to entrapment and useless hopes of escape, groundhog day-esque, acoustic.
Fabulous
A few of the songs I've heard a lot. The whole album is kind of in the same tone. It is "Coldplay". If you like their stuff then you like their stuff. I think it is OK.
Very good
Remarkable somber album. Powerful in its simplicity. Sad but still optimistic. You can glimpse the burgeoning soaring, sonic instrumentals that would burst out in later albums and eventually drag them into excess, but this is a mostly quiet album. Reflective. Peaceful. Nothing deep lyrically, but nothing extraneous or batshit insane either. It’s not cohesive enough to be a 5 star album, but it’s just lovely music for a rainy day.
Actually like it more now than when it first came out!
Already knew a few songs but really enjoyed it. Sad and mellow and comforting
no lo mejor que le he escuchado a coldplay pero si es muy bueno
Only decent Coldplay album in existence. It was all downhill from here.
Probably one of, if not their best album. Sound of their time, very classic Coldplay. Leads voice is also pretty memorable, lyrics and melodies good. 3.6
Really good! Yellow is my favourite track.
Cool Brit-Pop.
Classic
I’m not a huge Coldplay fan but this is by far their best album
A feeling. Chris Martin’s voice and phrasing makes this band.
I remember listening to this when it came out. I loved it then and I still really like it now. This album is a standout for Coldplay. There are some really interesting vocal melodies, it's more darker/odder than their later stuff.
Very good memories for this album and I saw them perfoming few songs of this album live.
Great album, this one really took me back. I use to listen to Coldplay non stop from 11-15 and this album is a lot of highlights. I really love the song sparks, it is a lot of heart and brings me back to one of my favorite comedy’s of all time. My favorite song on the album is spies and really showcased by Coldplay is the success that they are. There’s a lot more that could be said, but I want to keep these brief. Overall it’s a great album and holds a lot of nostalgia for me.
Lots of songs in 4/6 time. Peak Coldplay. There are a couple of the big hits, but the other songs actually do a good job at establishing a sonically cohesive and very listenable album. It's like what Dave Matthews kind of wished he could be. It is moody, vacillating between slightly cynical and despairing; and self assured to the point of cringe.
partial to A Rush of Blood to the Head, but undoubtedly a good album.
Actually pretty good. Never really listened to coldplay, and was genuinely surprised. All down hill from this debut album from the looks of things
What a history I have with Coldplay… Years later and I still remember the lyrics. Fitting first album in my 1001 album journey.
Mellow good background listening.
Great debut album. You either love them or hate them but regardless this is a great collection of songs.
Better than expected but not for me.
Parachutes is voor mij een briljant album. Coldplay voordat ze écht bekend waren. Prachtig ❤️ vooral Shiver natuurlijk
An instant groan of recognition, followed by an indifferent shrug, followed by an appreciative murmur. I take it as the toxic masculinity leaving my system. This is a good album. If you don't think so, it's probably because of some weird male ego thing. Let it go, buddy. You're the only one who cares about yourself being macho.
Good. Coldplay, to me, is always better than average, but not top tier. However, that make good listening all the time.
I love this album and I’m so bummed their quiet, indie charm was so short-lived. Stripped down Coldplay is the best Coldplay. But I’d probably sell out too. They look like they’re having fun. I just miss this.
I love this album, I love the songwriting, I love the production, and I swear to God I would give this album 5 stars if Chris Martin didn't occasionally create the dumbest lyrics I've ever heard in my life.
Track 1: kinda a basic intro song but good. Track 2: I always liked this track by them. Track 3: fun riff and sets the tone of the album. Track 4: I’ve always liked sparks for the acoustic sound it has. Track 5: I remember watching how they created this song and I do like it. Track 6: good track right after yellow and has a fun riff. Track 7: short title track Track 8: fun little song Track 9: nice song towards the end. Track 10: good closer! Track 11: nice little hidden track! Overall 7.8/10. I like it but there’s a few songs I’d take out, but there are a lot of good songs on here.
Coldplay, you either love them or hate them...I am more in the "love them" category. Standouts: Yellow, Trouble, Don't Panic, Shiver, 4/5
It is a good rainy day album. Kinda slow, kinda reflective. Not my favorite Coldplay record. 4/5...really 3.5/5, but rounding.
Aight I’ll admit, wasn’t expecting to like that as much as I did
One of, if not the best, Coldplay albums. So good from start to finish, love it.
Wow I liked this alot better than I anticipated. Early Coldplay is nothing like what they are today... which is a good thing
Timeless classic, favorites obviously yellow and sparks, I fell in love with trouble now
Länge sedan. Minns varför jag trodde de skulle bli ett nytt Radiohead. Fint!
Nunca lo había escuchado. Me gustó mucho, muy bueno para escuchar de fondo en una caminata. Lo disfruté.
I liked this more than I thought it would. Lots of nice chill music, as I expected from Coldplay, but some of the first tracks like Don’t Panic and Shiver had a surprising amount of energy to them and some really good guitar. I definitely enjoyed this, but it got a bit repetitive near the end. 4/5
The most relaxing indie rock I've heard. I love how "Everything's Not Lost" is positive but in a subtle way. "Spies" and "Trouble" were pretty good as well.
Bra tunes. Good vibes
Amazing stuff. Falsetto>>> and lovely melodies as well
Really enjoyed it! Forgot how much I love this album. A bit slow paced overall, but it's just solid. Great lyrics, solid bass lines, 4/5!
Some of these are definitely too sad for me to listen to on a regular basis. Regardless, to make an album deliver that spaciously sorrowful sound while still keeping the listener curious and aware is amazing. It may be sad, but don't let that divert you from hearing the genuine rawness and talent behind the lyrics, message delivered in every song, and relaxing tone throughout the album. Definitely makes the listener feel strong emotion which is relatively hard to accomplish while still creating something worth listening to. Personal Favorites: Shiver, yellow, Sparks
The popularity of some of these songs makes them hard to hear openly but this is a great album. Vibe is mellow but there's a consistent tone and quality throughout. Instrumentals don't blow me away but they are good and mesh well. Vocals are great - he's got a unique but good voice especially for the style.
A great album. A little sterile for my taste. There is a time and place for this. Could listen to some tracks again.
Before, I had preconceived notions that their music might be too easy or overly mainstream However, listening to this album was an eye-opener, it made me realise the incredible musical and vocal depth this band possesses Captivating melodies, poignant lyrical poetry, and delicate instrumentation A discovery that sometimes made me think of Radiohead and significantly broadened my appreciation for their work
Impressions: I love Coldplay! Favorite tracks: Spies, Yellow Rating: 4/5
Used to love this one still hits as well as it did in middle school :)
Ik ben niet de grootste fan van Coldplay. Middelmatige muziek die je te vaak hoort, druipend van de tekstuele clichés ('You know I love you so', ' I'll be loving you always', etc. etc.).
Great album, almost every song on here is perfect. I haven't listened to this album in a while and forgot how good it actually was. Yellow and Trouble were radio hits, but the opening song Don't Panic is great, followed by Shiver, probably one of the best Coldplay songs, and then Spies, another great one. It's just a great album overall, one of my personal favorites
8/10
Soft 4
Its coldplay...
Yeah I'm one of those people who like Coldplay. I saw them in concert and it was a really great show. So yeah I'm fine with this being an album "you must hear before you die". It seems like it's cool to hate on Coldplay and shameful to admit that you like their music. Does anybody know why? More importantly why do people care about what you listen to so much? I don't really care, just like I don't care to admit I listen to Taylor Swift every now and again. Anyway there are some very good tracks on here. Don't Panic, Shiver, Spies, Sparks, Yellow, Trouble (first Coldplay song I ever heard), High Speed, We Never Change, these are all good songs. I've listened to these all many times and will continue to listen to them. 4 out of 5.
Coldplay: a band people love to pretend to hate. I say pretend because their music is so inoffensive that the hatred really is just posturing. You can find them average, but the level of hate has always been pretty clearly just to go against what’s popular. The obnoxious music culture of the 2000s. When I was a teenager, Coldplay was really my first introduction to music. I grew up in a family where music consisted solely of top 40 hits. Coldplay certainly fit that category, but it was Coldplay that led me to something new - led to me discovering new music and genres I had never even really imagined before. I loved this album then. A decade later, I still enjoy it. It’s nothing revolutionary, music-wise. It’s far from the best album on this list, and I haven’t listened to it in years. But it still has some excellent tracks (“Shiver”, “Yellow”, “Sparks” are standouts) and doesn’t really have any bad ones. Bland they may be, but bad they were not (though I won’t comment on some of their more recent albums). This is one of their best.
When Coldplay was at their peak around 2002-4, I had friends who told me Parachutes was their best album. I had never heard this one in full despite being very familiar with all the singles. That was a bonkers take, and Rush of Blood to the Head is hands down their best record. Parachutes while it does have song absolute all-timers (Yellow, Shiver) it is way too acoustic guitar forward in the back half. I barely registered that songs were changing. I’m still landing on a 4.5 stars though
Good piano. Trouble is a great tune. Opening song always sounded like U2. But a nice, steady listen.
Solid album, lulls every here and there
I liked this way more than I thought I was going too. I'm only really familiar with their 'radio' songs, but I enjoyed most of the tunes on this album.
The opening song is very good. I like the vibe. Feels a bit like Blue October but more chill
Series was a great Track, great guitar work and chord progression. High Speed, another great track. Very Open and good guitar work.
Some of the soppy stuff is a bit strong, but overall its far more listenable than a lot of the shite on this list. People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis, you can't trust people Jeremy.
Soft 4
I've never really warmed to Coldplay. I really wasn't expecting much from this album, but I was pleasantly surprised and generally enjoyed it.
excellent little dull
It's actually a good debut. They just went so boring.
i know that Coldplay is basically the successor to Nickelback- a band that everyone disses-but Coldplay is talented and Chris Martin is a good songwriter. for a debut album this is pretty polished. i dont know of i love the way this album was mixed/its overall sound but it atill is a solid album
CD
vibe
Sounded like music that fishes in an aquarium would really like. Blub blub!
4/5
I know everyone bags on Coldplay. And I wouldn't say I'm a fan or anything. But this record does have some cool shit in it. It's got a mood I can dig. And when it came out, it was really just for a certain kind of person who felt like music had moved passed where they were. Rock was all dudes screaming and hip-hop isn't for everyone. So this would have been perfect for that kind of person.
Ei sovellu juoksulenkille, liian hidastempoinen kokonaisuus.
It would be easy to let what Coldplay have become to cloud one's opinion of this debut album. I almost skipped today's album on that basis, but that forgets what this felt like on release - melancholy, intimate, almost delicate indie rock that felt assured and perfectly at home in Cool Britannia. A relisten confirms that I do know most of lyrics, so despite my feelings for Coldplay now, this had a sizeable influence in my past
Last Friday, I reviewed A Rush of Blood to the Head, which I had never listened to from start to finish. I enjoyed it, so afterwards, I thought I'd listen to Parachutes, which I had also not listened to from start to finish, despite owning a copy of it on CD. Funny that I should get to review it a week later. I enjoyed Parachutes as much as A Rush of Blood to the Head, but for different reasons. Parachutes feels less poppy to me, and the instrumentation feels a little bit darker tonally, which I think is a nice contrast to the sound of A Rush of Blood to the Head. The guitar playing on this album is really good, especially on "Don't Panic" and "Shiver." The piano playing on "Trouble" is fantastic as well, and even though it shifts away from the guitar-heavy tracks on this album, it still fits into the rest of the album perfectly. "Everything's Not Lost" was a perfect closer to the album, with more great piano work by Chris Martin, and a great guitar riff. As good as the songs that I mentioned above are, "Yellow" is this album's "Clocks," and it completely steals the show. The acoustic opening shifts beautifully into the driving melody that makes this song such a standout. Martin's vocals are fantastic too, creating a crooning sound that would make Coldplay stand out from other pop acts of the time. The lyrics on this album are fine, but for my money, it's Coldplay's overall sound that makes them enjoyable to listen to. I have a feeling that I'll be revisiting this album and its successor soon.
4/5
Album 193 of 1001 Coldplay - Parachutes Rating : 4 / 5 Favorite Tracks : Yellow A fine album. I like Coldplay but not enough for a 5/5. There is something to the argument that a lot of their stuff sounds the same, yet that can be said for others, as well. Relaxing music. Good for a certain mood. Can't deny that it is quality stuff.
Yellow stands out aswell as trouble
achei meio sonolento mas é bom dimaizi
I prefer a rush of blood, but still a great album.
Yellow was very good, this was a bit slower than the music I would typically listen to. Not a bad album but probably wouldn't listen again.
Kinda got sick of some of the songs being played at Apple Store too much
Nice acoustic
I haven’t listened to a Coldplay album before, just radio hits. It’s a nice set of songs.
I forgot Coldplay used to be good!
Slow but melodic. Very fun to listen to
YES! Nostalgia city... memories of doing homework in college with this in my headphones.
Now, I dislike Chris Martin & the rest of Coldplay's discography as much as anyone, but this album is actually good; you can see why people attached to this, and why they have become as big as they are. It's well produced, has some memorable singles/moments and flows well. Despite his terrible personality, Martin has a great voice. 'Yellow' is still a great track 23 years later
The songs here are bops, but, this isn't my fav Coldplay album.
Has withstood the test of time
Sound of its time.
Favourite songs: Yellow, Don't Panic, Shiver, Trouble, Everything's Not Lost Least favourite songs: High Speed 4/5
Not their best, but "Yellow".
Most of the albums I’ve gotten so far have been cutting edge, complex and difficult to digest. Parachutes is the opposite. Nothing here is revolutionary, but it’s beautiful. I thought this would be my first 5 star review but Parachutes doesn’t have the intensity I remembered. I think I combined it with a Rush of Blood in my mind. However, if you don’t feel it when the electric guitar hits in Yellow’s intro, you might be dead inside. 8.5/10
usually a 3star album for me but for yellow 4
Nostalgic album. Some sad and reflective bangers. Easy listen while at work
It's Coldplay. Second half drags
I know Coldplay gets a bad rap these days, partially due to their music, and partially due to Chris Martin. However, back in 2000, when Parachutes appeared, they were an incredibly unique act. Not only was this their breakthrough album, but they brought the sound of chill, indie rock more into the mainstream and influenced other bands and singers to adopt a similar sound. People's larger appreciation for this sound and Coldplay's major success started here. Back then, Coldplay had an ethereal, surreal quality about them, and Chris Martin's voice was mysterious and a bit haunting. Again, this is on full display in this album on incredibly well known songs such as "Shiver", "Yellow", and "Trouble". I can see where some people might find this to be too chill and ultimately too boring, but I find that they have just the right element and level of oddity to their sound that it keeps me engaged. This may not have been Coldplay at their most famous, but in my opinion, it was Coldplay at their absolute best and most influential. Not quite a 4, but a high enough 3 for me.
Good album. Reminds me of the early 2000s and my sister.
very moving and emotional
"Parachutes" by Coldplay is an emotional journey captured in a perfect-length album. Released in 2000, it's a timeless classic that evokes nostalgia and tugs at the heartstrings. Tracks like "Yellow" and "Trouble" showcase Chris Martin's heartfelt lyrics and the band's melodic prowess. Clocking in at just under 42 minutes, it's a concise and emotionally resonant experience, never overstaying its welcome. The album's simplicity and sincerity connect on a profound level, making it a go-to for anyone seeking a cathartic musical experience. "Parachutes" remains a masterclass in emotional songwriting, a testament to Coldplay's enduring ability to create music that hits deep in the feels. 4.5/5
Fantastic. Haven't heard this in quite a while. It's really great. 4/5
4–, yks 2000-luvun alun lemppareista.
I like Coldplay, so it's a good album. If you don't like Coldplay, you'll like Yellow for sure and probably Sparks. The triple threat of Spies/Sparks/Yellow being one right after the other is definitely the highlight.
I like this album as it’s a real look into the best of Coldplay. It’s their debut and in my opinion they’re best. They really hit hard with songs like don’t panic shiver and trouble. It’s a nice easy going indie rock pop album to listen to. Also almost every song is about a relationship or love so it get a bit repetitive. Good album but nothing standing out to make it a 5/5.
I've listened this album quite a few times over the years. Don't Panic, Spies, Yellow and Trouble are all great songs I've put on many playlists. Every other song on here is decent to good as well but can sometimes borderline on forgetable for a few. I don't get the hate for Coldplay. Its a solid album easily worth 4 stars.
unico album do coldplay que é realmente bom
Reading the other reviews I just don’t understand why people get so worked up about Coldplay. Listening to this was an absolute delight compared to some of the other shit on this list. It is quite a gentle album, and derivative of Radiohead in some parts, but people act like Chris Martin is Satan and listening to this album is like getting stabbed up the arse with a pitchfork. I get that Coldplay are ‘commercial’ and ‘mainstream’ but it’s fine to not listen to them, there’s no need to be so triggered.
Incredibly well crafted debut album from Coldplay. Drags a little on the back half, but overall really lovely. Fave Songs: Yellow, Shiver, Don't Panic, Everything's Not Lost, Spies
As someone who cringes hard when even hearing the word Coldplay to my surprise I really enjoyed their debut LP alongside their second one. (Anything after those is just bluhhh!) Is it a revolutionary masterpiece of an album NO! Is it a slightly sad, chill, easy to listen, hummable along record YES! Sparks is my favourite track on the album personally, I just wish they continued with a different name or maybe stopped making new albums after a while lol because I’m cringing at myself for actually enjoying listening to CoLdPLaY… and Parachutes is dare I say actually pretty pleasant.
Love love love
Good debut from coldplay despite their reputation. Had only heard yellow before this but like a lot of the other songs
I remember having this album on rotation back when it came out. I went through a period of really liking it, then it began to grate a bit, then Coldplay became too popular and I rapidly lost interest in them. Putting aside the unfortunate personalities involved, there's still a lot to like here. Although they come across as a poor man's Radiohead, there's plenty of high points on their debut album. I like the mellow sound and everything just glides along nicely without any abrasive parts, but also without ever getting dull. Listening to this after a gap of 20+ years was interesting. I remembered half of the tracks very clearly and the other half not at all. The second half does drag on a tiny bit towards the end. Difficult to rate this, I thought somewhere between a 3 and 4 star rating seemed fair. It's not perfect but it's a solid album and I enjoyed listening it to after a sizeable gap. I'm going to go with a 4.
I think my initial impressions, upon listening to this in college, were correct. It's just so emo. At the time I was neck-deep in the hardcore scene and couldn't be bothered by this sad-sack singer who desperately needed a hug and I dismissed it as useless. Where I diverge from my college self is that I no longer think this is useless. Old me finds this album hauntingly beautiful, incredibly salient, and deeply compelling. It IS still sad-sack emo music but, now that I'm older and have mellowed out, I'm kinda digging that vibe. I'm glad that Coldplay evolved as a band, though. The more energetic offerings of "Rush of Blood to the Head" and "X & Y" are steps above this debut album. But they wouldn't have gotten there without starting here and I'm thankful for it.
Very good album. Knew many of the songs already but never listened to the entire record. Good for sad and/or rainy days.
You have to understand the state of popular music when this was released. American alternative/indie had already peaked and that tiresome macho, aggro thing was at its height. Music production had fallen victim to the loudness war which made listening to a whole album in one sitting a fairly unpleasant experience. It was time for the pendulum to swing back toward the opposite pole. It was time for sad British guys to make their return. The production on Parachutes sounds great. It's clean and clear with plenty of breathing room for the performances to shine. Maybe the lyrics are a little bit obvious but that's not what this is about.
Don't Panic really sets the mood for this album. Spies is one of my favourite Coldplay tracks and I quite enjoyed Everything's Not Lost, especially as the closer.
I have a much less visceral dislike of this than "A Rush of Blood..." - perhaps it wasn't played quite as much at the time, or maybe I'm just more nostalgic for 2000 than 2002. I can maybe accept a little more now the Doves comparisons to these guys. In this album, in particular, there's a kinda post-rocky atmospheric element, and Doves maybe share something along those lines. Fave tracks - "Yellow", somewhat surprisingly given how much air time it got. Also quite liked "Spies" and "Everything's Not Lost" (though not the hidden track tacked onto its end)
This album is good on its own but is more interesting as a point of comparison for rush of blood because this shows how much the band had improved by the time they released that album. Here, they seem quiet and without a really unique sound doing wistful love songs while their next album is more bombastic and confident in both production and writing. Regardless of quality in between albums, yellow, trouble, and shiver are all great on their own.
This is a good album - I'm coming around to Coldplay, at least their early stuff. Standouts include Shiver, Spies, Yellow, and High Speed.
Not a fan of Coldplay these days, but there is no denying this album and Rush of Blood are top quality 4/5
Förvånandsvärt bra? Men samtidigt så extreeeemt 2000.
My rents played this so much when I was younger, Spies and Yellow were some of the first songs I have memories of. I hadn't listened to it since childhood, until Alfie randomly put it on at Squeakers one time. It slapped at his shack and it certainly slapped today. Fav track: Spies Might be generous as it's hard to put aside nostalgia but probs a 4.5 for me.
I really think this is superior pop/rock. There's genuinely melancholy here, very engaging production, and pretty brilliant songwriting. Martin's vocals have some soulfulness that seems to vanish after these first couple of albums - actually, that could be said for the whole band. There's a big nostalgia element for me here as this was a record I remember Dad putting on frequently as a little'n. But revisiting it, I don't think it's ridiculous for them to have blown up like they did, it's pretty stellar. I have as much distaste for the rest of their output as the next person, but I'd genuinely agree that this gets on the list. A little sag as it goes on, but boy that front half fires. Four and a half. Fave track: Spies
not gonna lie, I love a good bit of Coldplay. yellow is just something else, it's amazing. I grew up listening to Coldplay as did many early 2000s kids so that's probably why I love them so much - the nostalgia or something. My favourite song from this album is: obviously Yellow, Sparks is also pretty high up for me.
Slower songs that I wouldn’t have appreciated when I was younger. I really liked some of these! I’ll always have an emotional reaction to Yellow, but was pleasantly surprised when other songs also resonated with me.
Perhaps surprisingly, I have an open mind when it comes to old Coldplay (Oldplay?) - Viva La Vida was a surprisingly great listen when I tried it out a long time ago. Although I missed the time of Coldplay as a cultural monolith, I can tell why they were one to begin with. I can imagine being bored to tears by the 50th time hearing "Yellow," "Sparks" or Don't Panic" back during this album's height of cultural relevance, however, in 2023, it's all just gorgeous, smooth, machine-refined pop music. It might not be real diamonds, but it's got the same shine and polish-- and the hooks stick just as well. Possibly the easiest music ever to digest. I'm not sure how many board-rooms are responsible to thank for that. Deserves a spot. A shining, glistening, slightly overplayed 3.5/5.
This was definitely a Coldplay album. I liked it more than I thought I would though. Almost a 5, but nothing was really crazy, it all sorta flowed together. BT: Spies We Never Change Shiver
Pretty good
A record peaked with melancholic yet hopeful atmosphere. The album's standout hit, "Yellow," became an instant classic. Its delicate guitar riff and Martin's tender delivery fit together perfectly. "Yellow" showcased Coldplay's ability to craft catchy melodies without sacrificing emotional depth, and it remains one of the band's signature songs. ”Parachutes" maintains a consistent tone throughout, with tracks like "Shiver" and "Trouble" offering a blend of introspection and infectious hooks. These songs show the band’s ability to create radio-friendly yet introspective tunes. The atmospheric production is a highlight as the album progresses. Tracks like "Sparks" and "We Never Change" create an intimate sonic landscape and really showcase the sound of Coldplay in their early years. On the downside, "Parachutes" does have moments where the songwriting feels slightly formulaic, with some tracks blending into each other without leaving a distinct impression. While the album maintains a consistent mood, a greater variety in musical styles and tempo could have added more depth to the overall experience. The overall score lands on a 4 after a lot of self-debating. The album’s many memorable melodies and the overall sound production earns it’s score. However it’s close to a 3.
I am not a fan of Coldplay and find that most of their albums are incredibly mediocre aside from a couple of songs. This album is the exception. It flows well from beginning to end and is a perfect encapsulation of early 2000s pop rock/post Britpop. The album exudes a sense of warmth that future Coldplay releases would fail to recreate.
There was a time when Coldplay were not the all conquering, stadium filling, love brigading behemoth that they are now and this is it! For those old enough to remember when this came out, they will remember 2000 being the year of the dreaded Millenium Bug, the (at the time) jaw dropping juggernaut Big Brother starting (Nasty Nick can still fuck off…), Eminem releasing The Marshall Mathers LP to acclaim and hysteria in equal measure and EVERYBODY trying to get the top score on Snake II on the hallowed Nokia 3310. They may also remember a bedraggled, toothy, curly haired indie singer serenading us in the wind and the rain on a beach with HUGE single, Yellow. The rest of the album shines and if anything, Yellow is one of the weaker songs in my opinion. This album was huge then, is huge now and does nothing to dispel how wonderful a song writer Chris Martin really is. Beautiful album start to finish.
I said in my last Coldplay review that they get unnecessary hate. This was a great album and maybe one of the first albums I ever owned on CD. Not that I listened to it all that much since I think I got it for doing well on piano. Still it's fine music and they get too much hate.
It’s a bit odd revisiting Coldplay’s first album after seeing the direction their career went. You hear the Brit-pop and Radiohead influences. And hear how they would become the biggest “rock” band in the world. It’s been a while since they’ve made good music, it’s easy to forget that this album is just really solid. Several great songs, some others that sound a bit dated now.
Very enjoyable listen. There is a quality to the vocals and music that I can feel... Depth in the lyrics as well.
4.0
I like early 00’s Coldplay more than I should. (Not their other stuff, just that specifically). Really good songs on here, kind of like Radiohead but as mainstream pop. ‘Don’t Panic’ in particular is really good to me; kind of odd since a lot of other people don’t mention it. I also like ‘Shiver’, though I don’t like the other, bigger hit from this album, ‘Yellow’. Something that bugged me was the chorus of ‘Spies’; you can’t touch them… because… they’re spies? What? Anyway, while my enjoyment of it teeters on a 5, I think it just deserves a 4.
It's not really my thing but you can't deny it's quality and it's a lot leaner than their other albums
Pretty good, rly nice to listen to and chill to but lyrics aren’t overly deep or meaningful. A nice vibe though, would defo listen to again
Good stuff, not my vibe atm but it's good
It’s hard to believe this album is over 20 years old now, it still sounds good today as it did, but then and still sounds relevant and fresh. Testament to Coldplay, the first album was such a success and every album thereafter has been, that’s probably why they are still popular and relevant today. The album doesn’t have a bad track on it, there are no fillers just really good listenable songs.
I know it's achingly uncool to like Coldplay but there's a reason an indie band sells 13 million albums and that's because Chris Martin could write tunes. I've never massively been a fan of his voice but this is a great set of songs.
Incredible how many artists find their voice on the debut album, soar to incredible heights musically, and gain huge commercial success only to lose all their soul a couple albums later. I loved this album when I was 17, still sounds amazing. Shiver was in my head all day yesterday, beautiful song.
Trouble is one of the prettiest songs I've ever heard. Good album.
Yeah good shit.
I don't consider myself a Coldplay fan but I am definitely a fan of this album. I got into it in high school I think, a few years after it came out. Yellow got overplayed on the radio after its release, and perhaps because of that I still don't enjoy that song, but if you take that one out all the others are solid. The first four songs are an amazing emotional journey - I used to listen to just those four when I wanted to get in the zone.
Is there a more 2000s rock-alt album than this? Coldplay quickly became a meme and as albums further progressed they moved away from this indie-alt-rock vibe with a bit of U2 and Radiohead thrown in. I'm personally still a fan of the Blue Room EP and this was the actual album followup. Production/songwriting wise they definitely stepped it up, but lost a bit of the rough edges for my tastes. Songs like High Speed are almost a Coldplay version of Subterranean Homesick Alien from Radiohead's OK Computer and Shiver could have been sung by Bono. Songs like Yellow became pop anthems and if that song did not become what it did... who knows where Coldplay would have gone. It's an important album that I may enjoy listening to about 50% of still. From Wikipedia: "The band then took a lengthy break to compose more tracks for Parachutes. A few months later, it was arranged that Allison and the band meet at a rehearsal room to finally begin production on the band's debut album. "They started up playing in the rehearsal room and they really weren't together at all. And I was very honest with them, I just sort of said 'Look, this simply isn't good enough'" I'd love to have known what they would have sounded like if that didn't happen, probably a lot rougher but maybe a bit less commercial for my tastes. Favorite tracks: Don't Panic, Spies, Sparks, We Never Change
One of Coldplay’s best releases
Ik vind dit een leuk album. Shiver is het leukste nummer. De rest is ook goed maar zo vaak gedraaid.
Debuutalbum van Coldplay. Bevat o.a. "Yellow" en "Trouble". Album heeft een relatief rustige tracklist. Kwaliteit is goed en de nummers zijn toegankelijk, typisch Coldplay. leukste nummer: Yellow De band luisterde veel naar Jeff Buckley tijdens de productie. "Shiver" is een openlijke imitatie van de stijl van Buckley.
Good stuff. If only they were still making music like this.
Really well crafted, delivering its melodic hooks and interesting arrangements with subtlety and nuance. A bit ethereal and dark that sets a cool mood. Very enjoyable.
Not a fan if Coldplay, but this album is alright. The Jeff Buckleyish song 'Shiver' is my fav because it sounds more like Jeff Buckley than Coldplay.
Really good
Yeah they disappeared up their own arses later in their career but this has consistently great songwriting and is excellent
Good start as I remember.
Oh no, what's this? A spider web and I'm caught in the middle So I turned to run The thought of all the stupid things I've done And I, I never meant to cause you trouble And I, I never meant to do you wrong And I, well if I ever caused you trouble Oh no, I never meant to do you harm I think I'm supposed to hate coldplay? Thus; I didnt want to like this album, but the problem is - its fucking excellent and I ended up really enjoying it. 4/5
I suppose this is where I have to admit I actually like Coldplay. This album is pretty solid from beginning to end. I actually think their most popular song Yellow is one of the more lackluster tracks on the album. I think Shiver is the best track on the album.
Coldplay/Chris Martin catch a deservedly large amount of flack, but Parachutes was the album the projected them to the level to catch that flack. They kind of remind me of how U2 evolved into a band that people hated after Achtüng Baby. Chris Martin's lyrics on Parachutes is top notch and I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed this album. a surprising 4/5.
I think people who sneer at Coldplay are similar to those who looked down their nose at ABBA years ago. They have more hooks and great melodies in this album than most groups manage in a career Never cool. Never edgy. But these songs still pack out stadiums after 25 years so it’s hard to argue they’re without merit Yellow, Spies and Shiver remain particularly great
I'm a Coldplay apologist. I don't care for most of their new output, but I grew up with these early albums, and I still like them a lot. I really enjoyed listening to Parachutes today. The first 60% of the album is particularly strong, and "Shiver" and "Sparks" remain favorites of mine. The only songs I don't care for as much are the short transitional title track, and the closer "Everything's Not Lost". That said, really strong pop record, and a great debut for them. I'd like to see them return to a more rock-oriented sound in the future, and please, for the love of all that is holy, stay away from EDM.
Good Album 4/5
Boss to be honest. A classic sound and a world away from the coldplay that has sold out today. Spies and yellow are personal favourites
Enjoyed Coldplay more than I thought. Very mellow and encompassing
J'ai aimé plus que je ne m'y attendais. Coldplay a un côté un peu quétaine, mais la musique sait comment nous emporter et créer des émotions. Un peu de nuances ferait parfois du bien
Good debut album by Coldplay, with highly memorable hits and great melodies and hooks. I love Coldplay first 3 albums before they became boring and uninteresting. Good times. 8,3/10
Great nostalgia
I don't hate Coldplay but I was surprised by how many songs I knew AND really liked
man, they used to be so good
Some songs borrows so much from Jeff Buckley it's distracting. Shivers in particular sounds exactly like something that would be on Grace. Anyway, this album was huge when it came out and it marks the turning point where britpop started to fade to become something more atmospheric and, dare I say, Radiohead-esque. Like Doves and all that. Radiohead had left for more experimental pastures and so the indie rock throne was vacant, Coldplay clearly wanted to redeem that spot and it succeeded, they went on to beome one fo the most popular acts of the early 00's.
I was a hardcore Coldplay fan in College, but as I discover more band such as radiohead that fade away. I still think that they had something interesting to bring to the industry. their show seams amazing and I love Chris voice.
Goated album
I forgot how long some of these are.
Heard a lot of these songs before, never listened to the whole alum. Some goodies
No wonder they got huge... Yellow into Trouble.... 👏 Don't Panic a very underrated track 👌
This album is one of the 3 good ones Coldplay made. I don't hate it, but it's not as good as A Rush of Blood to the Head. Don't Panic is all time though.
I enjoyed more than I thought I would. Especially Shiver and Yellow.
This is a nice collection of songs and introduction to this band. I think their only 5 star album might be viva la vida or a rush of cold blood to the head, but not sure if either are on here.
Still their best. Should’ve stopped with this one though
Great album. Yellow is awesome. Very chill throughout.
I hadn't listened to this album in years. Their later stuff out me off them a bit. It's a solid album and Shiver is an indie masterpiece. Stand out tracks - Shiver - Trouble - Yellow - Sparks - Parachutes
Coldplay’s debut album to kick off the year. The perfect choice as it felt nostalgic to come back to this band given my early fandom with them. An excellent, emotive album from top to bottom.
notes - debut album by coldplay - sort of a soft rock/pop album - this album has banger after banger after banger - the songs are all fairly similar but also very memorable - also includes huge hit yellow - this album is super deicate, doesnt feel the need to be in your face - pretty obvious radiohead influence - i listen to this album and other early coldplay all the time and it makes me so upset how disappointing theyve become fav - trouble - love the way this song shifts between the chorus and verse least fav - everythings not lost - most forgettable song on here 4.5/5 - fantastic album that falls off near the end
Very good album, probably one of Coldplay’s best
Oh Great I though, a Coldplay album, much eye rolling and tutting ensued. But I wasn't really prepared for the weird mix of emotions that actually listening to a Coldplay album all the way through (for the first time ever I might add). I never really actually harbored a deep hatred for Coldplay unlike a lot of people, I just always thought they were vapid, middle of the road and just far too concerned with getting radio plays than actually making good music. And its so easy to rag on them, and quite fun as well to have a go when everyone else is doing it. First of all, let me get it out the way. Yellow is an absolute banger, for a song the the entire world (including me) has heard hundreds if not more times. I was shocked that I had never really listened to it. The electric guitar production in that song is so good, its played sloppily and sounds raw and really unique. Champions drums have this wonderful reverb tail on the snare which really binds the piece together and all of the little glissandos in Chris Martin's vocals are all far more deliberate and well crafted than I originally would have thought. I mentioned Will Champion's drumming, I really think that's the key to this record, he's definitely a Ringo rather than a Pert in that its all understated but played with so much groove, I don't think there's a bad drum part on the whole record. I could go on so let me just sum up a few short feelings about a few more songs; Don't Panic is so anxious and driving its a great intro to the album and Trouble sounds deep and wide and lush as the sea with that wonderful piano sound and lush percussive acoustic guitar. That being said I would call quite a few of the songs filler, Spies and Sparks failed to make much of an impression on me. But the reason I found this a weird experience more than anything was that I actually enjoyed a Coldplay album. In fact in the last year I've listened to and enjoyed a Coldplay and an REM album. What does this say about me? Does this mean I'm getting old? Should I got out and buy some slippers and a big bag of Werther's originals? Over the course of these 41 minutes and 55 seconds I was forced to take a look at myself and where I am in life as I get into my late 30's. And I came out the other side having realized that yes maybe I've grown up and am seeing the value in something that I didn't see any value in when I was younger. And you know what, that's fine! We are all a sum of thousands of experiences, and all of those have lead to me being a lot more self assured and artistic than I ever was in the year 2000. Maybe that naff band with the annoying frontman are worth a chance after all because there is something of value in there even if the package as a whole isn't perfect.
Instant 5 Dammit I just want to give it a five, but it's just not that good. It's just Yellow and Shivers that stand out, the other tracks just blend away too much. 4.5, but I really like the Coverart.
There are a few albums in this world that make you shout "WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO YOU GUYS?" every time you hear it. Chicago's 'Transit Authority' and Live's 'Throwing Copper' spring to mind. Parachutes by Coldplay is another one. Do you just enjoy the music, get a little smile when that guitar in 'Don't Panic' starts building up, and sing along with the classic 'Yellow'? Or do you get sad that a band who showcase so much talent and songwriting skills on this debut became what they have become later in their career? Because no matter what comes afterwards, this first Coldplay album is still rock solid, even 20 years afterwards. Listen to songs like 'Shiver' or 'Spies' and there's no denying how incredibly good this is. And anyone can understand why this album became such a hit, with the masses as well as the indie crowds.
Listening to this for first time in a long time, one's reminded of the immortal words of Beavis and Butthead "why are English people such whining wussies?" But also that Coldplay would've done better to stay in precisely that sadder, whinier and more emo mode, rather than trying so naively to conquer the world with, you know, love and joy, or whatever other limpid motivations inspired their later (and very badly misguided) efforts. They were never going to convince with that quite callow effort, now were they? The happier and more earnest and ambitious they got, the more they sucked. And in their faux intensity ended up this generation's Styx (in the immortal words of J. Hoberman), try as they might have been to be U2 (whose own later efforts have fairly trilled with rather Coldplay-like insipidities). Still, one must cop to having been quite taken by this record upon its release, much as one is embarrassed admitting it now, given how bloody awful and insufferable Coldplay has been for so long now. The hidden track at the end is a clear harbinger of the pretension to come. One liked this record originally for reasons (perhaps misconceptions) having to do with being melancholic and jaded in a stylish and sophisticated and globally au courant sort of way (the life one was leading at the time, alas). And even now this is occasionally gorgeous and affecting, which is just cringe-making to confess, this being a tortured affection rather than a guilty pleasure. "Yellow," once annoyingly ubiquitous, and "Trouble" chime and sort of swing appealingly, if basically. "Sparks" and "We Never Change" have precisely that sort of languor and ennui for which one has always had a weak spot, perhaps mistaking it for depth or meaning, rather than seeing it for the cloying sentiment it surely is here, though well hidden here under the guise of world weariness. The bottom line is that one still sees the surface appeal as much as one wishes one's more refined critical sensibilities would allow one to eschew – indeed transcend – those blandishments that produce a certain sort of satisfaction, which is of course a lowly thing. Hoping we can keep it a secret.
Ah, the album with the most legendary bass line ever conceived… As cheesy and soulless and Coldplay has seemingly become, there is no denying this album’s beautiful simplicity.
Decent, enjoyed it.
It's been a longtime, and god damn it, it wasn't that bad
An amazing debut from Coldplay. Although through the years there have been countless memes and brush-offs that Coldplay have sold out. However with a wildly successful commercial debut album, how can they have ever been sold out? Parachutes includes absolute classics such as Yellow and Don't Panic - where would we be as a society without these songs? Best: Yellow; Don't Panic Worst: Everything's Not Lost
Mysigt och stämningsfullt popalbum med några riktigt bra låtar. Dock håller inte kvaliteten på låtarna hela tiden.
Sad. Made well
Parachutes is not so much pop as one could expect when hearing the band's name. This, their debut album, ventures into indie rock and resembles the early Radiohead at times (but with a slightly more positive vibe). Especially Don't Panic and Yellow are the standouts here, but most of the album is quite good, though it loses a bit of steam near the end. 3.5/5
This album was my childhood
Enjoyed this. Very peaceful mixed into the pop/rock. Cool to hear Coldplay before all the fame.
The better of the two Coldplay albums in this list imo. Funny to get them two weeks in a row. Viva La Vida is their best to me but this one is really solid too.
Það er einhver stemming í þessari plötu sem ég fíla svo vel. Held ég setji þetta í flokkinn "haustplötur". Drullugott stöff.
Good Coldplay album
It
A really good debut album
This is my 3rd coldplay album. I listened to the new one which was garbage and a rush of blood to the head. Thankfully this album sounds more like the second one. Dont panic and shiver were great opening songs. I like the acoustic vibe they have on this album. I understand why Yellow has over a billion streams - banger. Sparks also a great song. I would have given this a 5 but I felt like it didnt end on as strong of a note as it started. 8/10 Great album!
Really liked shiver and the last 2 songs
Hating Coldplay is the cool thing to do but I think they're actually pretty decent, and Parachutes is among their best stuff.
There’s definitely some nostalgia at play here for me. These songs have such somber tones and catchy melodies. This album definitely had an impact on my song writing and overall taste in music.
probably my favorite coldplay, but i still just feel almost nothing about it. giving it a 4 because it’s better, but it’s a low 4
actually solid Coldplay what tf happened bae
How did I miss this one in it's time. I wrote coldplay off as sorta sissy pop music, but they can rock.
3.5/5 As I read in the comments it’s either you hate Coldplay or you love them. Still I am somewhere in between. The way the music is composed is great and I can understand why people love it and see the quality. But it doesn’t get to me, the album is good some also individual songs are great. It got better when I listened the album again so I will give it 4 stars as 3.5 is not possible. Favourite songs - Yellow - Trouble - High speed
Favourite Song: Shiver
This album was okay. A little bit generic, nothing really popped out at me as being incredibly special. Wasn’t a bad listen and there were a few decent tracks but nothing memorable.
The album has a particular 2000's sound to it. It's clear why Coldplay rose above the rest of the similar bands at the time. I especially appreciate that many of the songs have a really fantastic and moving coda, growing beyond the simple verse->chorus->repeat schematic. Overall a really strong album with numerous hits and a solid flow with very few weak moments. Worth listening to from start to finish. Ending with "Everything's not lost" was a real highlight.
liked songs: Don’t panic Sparks Yellow Trouble We never change Everything’s not lost
Always a classic. Very nostalgic
thoroughly enjoyed!
This is an album where I know most of the songs. It reminds me of listening to this in high school. I love don't panic. shiver - guitar hero representation. sparks <3 it's so calming and relaxing. it's hard not to enjoy this album. also this is their debut album. very very good debut album. I eel like that should always be noted in these reviews, to have a debut album on this list I think is important. i forgot about everything's not lost, i am realizing a lot of these songs got me through some tough times in high school. this is nice to revisit.
Nice vibey thing. Main songs were overplayed when it came out
Very well put together, great vocals, yellow and last track are the best
So... this is where it all begins, huh? Not as bombastic as I was expecting it to be, but it still does the job well. Question, though: Where does the rot start? Is this, truly, Coldplay's best album? Should I go ahead and delve into the rest of their discography to find out? Plenty of potential to be seen and heard here. Favorites: Don't Panic, Shiver, Sparks, Yellow, High Speed, Everything's Not Lost - Life is for Living.
Ah, dobar Coldplay, šteta sta su se uništili. Dost dobar album, sad kad sam ga poslušao nakon dugo godina, bome je dobar. Radiohead se čuje definitivno ovdje, mozd je zato i dobar :P
Alternative rock, 2000. Really interesting debut album and one of the best mainstream records of the 2000s. Also arguably the most interesting and the best LP by Coldplay. Songs like "Shiver", "Yellow" and "Trouble" are great pop/rock songs both artistically and commercially.
This is maybe my second Coldplay album I’ve ever listened to. (I definitely listened to “Viva la Vida” a few times my freshman year of college.) It’s gorgeous. And jazzier than I thought it would be. Something about that melodic acoustic guitar. Really nice. I love this album cover. It’s very memorable. And I just realized after staring at it for a while that it’s a globe of the Earth. I always assumed it was Jupiter or some other planet. Anyways, I think it’s beautiful.
"Yellow" is one of my favorite pop songs. Chris Martin has such a wonderful and wide ranging timbre in his voice and he is a master of matching inflections with emotions in lyrics. The same can be said for many songs on this album, like the opener, "Don't Panic", the down tempo, modal mix piano ballad "Trouble", and even "Shiver" which comes across to me like a poppy Radiohead song. I really like this album and I think people who hate on Coldplay forget that they had some really incredible records.
Surprisingly beautiful
A really great album. Coldplay had a way to make you dream, without the calm tone lf their songs to become boring. Great album.
A mellow rock vibe that is very enjoyable and nostalgic. Good vibes.
Similar theme throughout. High speed was one to listen again
De va bättre än ja trodde fr
Coldplay songs always sound so melancholy, and this album is no different. I like that though; the music sets a certain haunting mood.
I love (old) Coldplay, fight me
Can't stand Coldplay, but this album was great, shame they disappeared up their own arses. Point deducted because of Chris Martin
Ignoring the cultural food fight over the band. This is a solid album for an average day. It isn't outrageous. It isn't in your face. It won't wring out every emotion and leave you a puddle on the floor. Instead, it'll walk alongside you on a cool autumn day. It will hum along with you on a commute. Don't Panic, Shiver, Yellow, and Everything's Not Lost will fill up so many of the spaces that make up the vast majority of our time. If you let it, it'll add a comfortable element to your mundane moments. Everyone like a good sweater. Hence its popularity.
Always enjoyed this one
i know its embarrassing saying you love coldplay over any other niche band or whatever but they make the only acceptable kind of 'generic' music, banger debut album
I have always enjoyed Coldplay, When I got this album for the day I expected the Reviews to be very positive and very high. never realized that Coldplay was hated by so many people until I checked the Reviews, I have absolutely no clue what the controversy or reason people hate them but I couldn't really care that much either. I enjoyed this album and while I can agree that it falls flat lyrically I enjoyed it the whole way through. Favourite Songs: Trouble, Sparks, Yellow
Man I wish I was their drummer.
I'm afraid I have to be true to my early-30s self and honor this record, because I loved it then. It was sad (as I was by temperament) and serious (as I ever hoped to be) and at times beautiful (ditto). It really does hold up pretty well, sounding gorgeous, substantively stylish and professionally made. But, God have they been mostly awful ever since (the Styx of this generation, as J. Hoberman once put it). 3.5 for 4.
I had no idea Coldplay's debut was comparatively speaking so recent. Somehow I thought these guys had been around for ages. It's really very decent and was pleasant to listen to. But really nothing more than that. Giving the album a 3.5 but rounding up because I'm in a good mood.
7/10
Very pleasant, once you get used to Chris Martin's octave-jumping falsetto style, which is irritating to begin with.
j'avais oublié que c'était comme ça
Great album, I don't think I'd ever actually listened to it the whole way through before. Again, I liked it more than I thought I would.
Used this as going to sleep music for about a year. So ingrained on my subconscious that I actually really like it.
Rock alternativo de Coldplay. Un megahit. Un poco lento como para darle un 5.
An example of how a legacy can be ruined. I loved their first single and didn't even notice how much of a prat Chris Martin could be - he was just posh with some cracking tunes. On a relisten, some excellent standouts and a happy bit of nostalgia - shame subsequent events mean this album is effectively cancelled for people with good taste
insane for a debut album, it is one of the great things coming out of the post britpop genre
very pretty :)
Yes… there were times that I thought “hm, Radiohead did this better”. There were times where the preconceived prejudices I had of this band really DID show up. But! I thoroughly enjoyed this album. It brought me back to… to what? I’m not sure where I was transported listening to this but I felt it all over. Perhaps it reminded me of when I was 6 and really wanted to be 16. Back then, I had heard songs like “Yellow” and definitely felt something. I don’t think I knew what it was at the time, but I knew that songs like these were sentimental. I unfortunately had no sentiment to attach to those “nostalgic songs” because I was 6 haha. This album sounds like lying down on your high school’s football field with your new girlfriend.. listening to music on your iPod, sharing earbuds. I’m all for it.
Whilst being aware that it's a cool and popular opinion to think Coldplay are dog shite and very boring, I have to say that some of their early tunes/albums are pretty great. Parachutes is one of these for me. It is just the kind of sad music that I find extremely relaxing and so so simply beautiful. Tracks like Don't Panic, Spies, Yellow, Trouble, they are legendary to me to be honest. It is disappointing to realise after not really listening to this as an album (I never tend to listen to whole albums until now apparently haha) it does tail off at the end to a disappointing/boring finish so it's not wall to wall bangerz IMO.
Well I have to say I was dubious but the throw back was real and strong. I actually really enjoyed listening to this. Say what you want abot Coldplay now - arguably terrible! But this was enjoyable and around this time they were excellent songwriters
Best Album Coldplay have put out by a mile. Well written, simplistic but so so good.
Love this album when it came out. Their space, cosmic style guitar riffs and melodically drum beats makes many of their songs ear worms. I was happy to see my favorite Coldplay "A Rush of Blood to the Head" is also on the list. It is truly their Opus in my opinion.
Clássico.
Genre: Pop Rock 4/5 One of the albums on this list that I know almost every single note of. Coldplay’s debut, while not as groundbreaking as their second LP in my opinion, is a tremendous pop/alt adventure. Piano aplenty from Chris Martin, some really great bass playing, and solid arrangements and production throughout make this album a genuine joy to listen to. While Coldplay’s ideas were all sort of in their infancy, and since this they’ve certainly grown into one of pop’s biggest ear sores, there are some really great songs here. The single Yellow is a big time highlight, Spies and Shiver are great too, but the album closer Everything’s Not Lost is one of my all time Coldplay favorites. Damn good album, as far as I’m concerned.
As fashionable as it seems these days to hate coldplay, I do really like this album..
Gratis. Wonderfull
Great debut album
Rock alternativo de Coldplay. Un megahit. Un poco lento como para darle un 5.
Listened Before? Y Coldplay's debut album! I know this one. Pros: This is a good album. Mellow and good lyrics. Feels like the early 2000s in a good way. Cons: Some of the songs are too long. This album was surpassed by it's follow-up "A Rush of Blood to the Head", so it's hard to not compare it to the superior album. Added to Library? Y Songs added to Playlist: Yellow
Brilliant.. just brilliant
Nice, I hadn't heard all of it before
I steer away from melancholy and haven't listened to this for a long time. But a great revisit. One of those albums that takes me back to a time and place earlier in life - the dreary UK ; )
Very good album before they disappeared up their own arse.
Oh this! Finally a good chance to listen to Coldplay. Sounds like pop music did not change much in the past 20 years, and personally does not really like the slack style in singing. Nevertheless, 22 years later, it has its iconic seat in the pop culture.
the only good coldplay album
As far as debut albums go, few get the same level of reach and impact as Parachutes which defined the sound of early 2000's alternative rock. In retrospect, the stripped away not as hyper-produced sound really allows the musical skills and vocal talents to be on display for this group.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Don’t panic, Shiver, Spies, Everything’s not lost, Yellow
Really good songs and some clunkers. Still, a solid album that I would give 4.5 to if it were an option.
Classic album. First time listening to all of it, though it seems like all of those songs were singles at some point.
Yellow is great; rest of album OK
A real classic of an album. Do I thin k it is a masterpiece? No. Do I, like, really love Coldplay? Nope. But the music is good, I always enjoy listening to it and, at this point, it really is a time machine too.
