I too am annoyed I have to admit to maybe liking Coldplay
I don't get it, I thought I hated Coldplay
Strong debut album from Coldplay. Strange to look back at how a breath of fresh air they were at the time.
I know it’s cool to hate on Coldplay, but this is a good album.
everyone’s so tough until yellow comes on
I vigorously groaned when i saw I had this album, but then also remembered I listened to it a fair bit when it first came out and before Coldplay became limp. It is still very much coldpay like, but it has slightly more of an edge to it compared to what came after for coldplay. Yellow is still a great song. It was not and if i listened to it objectively, it is worth the 4 stars I have given it. ssssh dont tell anyone
Wisselend. Wel erg goeie nummers tussen. Vooroordeel over Coldplay wankers.
only good coldplay album
A classic, wish they furthered this sound and went more radiohead instead of selling out.
Oh my god I
Beautiful Album
Solid consistent album. Good background chill music
4.0
white music but still very good
The start of something special. Even if you aren't a fan of the bloated global act that Coldplay is today; their debut has all the markings of talent.
Coldplay when I still liked them.
We have our 6th 1 Billion plays (Sparks) and second 2 Billion plays (Yellow) by Coldplay. A formative band for us Millennials that still sets that melancholy mood when we are feeling not quite emo, but pretty darn close.
Don’t Panic and listen to this album. Everything’s Not Lost.
Really nice songs with more variety and edge than their early reputation implies.
Musically pretty good. Nothing bad. Not as bland as their later work.
Generally, I don't relisten to albums I've listened to before... but for this one, doing it was a very good idea. So damn beautiful...
I'm not a great fan of Coldplay, but that's a fine album! Yellow is a 2000's classic! Gonna leave 4 stars today.
I did not WANT to like this, because liking Coldplay is about as cliched as it gets. People have called Coldpaly overrated for so long, I was fully prepared to dislike this. However despite myself, I couldn't help becoming endeared by the album. This was after all, their debut album, a stepping stone that was crucial in establishing Coldplay as one of the most popular and well known British artists of the 21st Century. The vocals are earnest, passionate, chock full of emotion. The songs are genuinely beautiful, without being overly sentimental. Particular stand outs for me are Yellow (incredibly, I've never heard this song before), Don't Panic and my favourite, Trouble. I was musing between a 3 and 4, but screw it. This is good music, and I enjoyed it throughout. Take my 4 stars.
So Radiohead coded! I found I’m way too familiar with this record to listen to it with fresh ears, but very interesting to see how the end of “Everything’s Not Lost” foreshadowed their sound from their later career. “Trouble” into “Parachutes” is also clutch. We were all always playing “Trouble” on the piano in the common room of my high school lol Tbh can’t wait for A Rush of Blood to the Head which will surely be on this list!
Do I...like Coldplay? I never knew.
Solid. This brought me back to high school...
I get that Coldplay is often thought of as overplayed or overproduced or whatever but their early albums are legitimately good. Parachutes is no exception to this. It's the album that kicked off their career and catapulted them into the limelight.
Alright
I love don’t panic, sparks, yellow, and trouble . This was mellow and nice to listen to on my drive this morning, I really enjoyed it!
Honestly this one surprised me, I wouldn’t expect an album of slow songs to not be repetitive but each song was unique for the most part. 3.9/5. Fav song: yellow
Not a huge cold play girl but relatively compared to other albums this has given me I liked it
I forgot that I actually like Coldplay. Perfect for late night drive, will be adding to the rotation
This is an incredible album. I'd listened to all of this when it came out but it isn't something I typically reach for and it was far overplayed at release in my opinion. Hearing it now, I like it more.
undeniably great pop
Really great, Coldplay might be best in this album. Really appreciate their work in this one versus their newer stuff.
I really like this album I enjoy Coldplay a lot
The band at its best. Could maybe have used one more hit, but lots of quality, with the band in its prime and before becoming a bit of a caricature.
So it's Coldplay, they are great at creating an emotive one. Good songs other than Yellow - last track is great.
Coldplay kinda missed me the first time around, but this is pleasant
High school me would never admit it, but this album ripped back in the day. And it still does. I’m really surprised how much I enjoyed this
I liked this album when I first heard it, and still like it today. I get it if Coldplay isn't some people's speed, but I maintain that they're overly maligned.
This one took me right back. How come I didn’t remember how badass this record is though? Side A especially is one banger after another. Ignoring the fact that Coldplay became the most annoying band around helps. It also helps that the drummer fuckin kills and they can write some killer melodies.
Pretty good
great album, beautiful!
Very good debut album. I enjoyed it when it came out, and I enjoyed coming back to it.
I like Coldplay. There, I said it, it's in the open. They get an unfair amount of hate for being "whiny and depressing". Firstly, I don't think that's true and secondly, depressing songs do not equal bad. Granted I only know the singles, I've never listened to a full album so I was looking forward to this. I've always liked Chris Martin's voice. His delicate falsetto in particular sounds very nice. On this debut, there's an unpolished almost rawness to it, like he hasn't quite mastered how to really control his vocals just yet. It's like they did one take and whatever came out ended up on the record (in a good way, I really like it). This is a lovely album overall. It's a lot less pop, and a lot more coffee shop-esque songs and alternative soft rock than I thought. Although it was one of my least favourite singles, 'Yellow' is a shoegaze song in disguise and is a classic. I hadn't heard 'Trouble' for a very long time and forgot how great that track was. The closer 'Everything's Not Lost' is easily my favourite song I hadn't heard before. I imagine the guitarist is probably so underrated in the world of music purely because he's in Coldplay, but there's so many cool, lovely little licks and riffs throughout this album. They aren't trying to go for radio friendly hits on this debut, they're just writing good music that happened to become radio hits. I enjoyed it a lot. There are a couple of duds and bland moments but overall it's a very good album, not a phenomenal one.
"Don't Panic" after listening to this one I remembered why I was a huge Coldplay fan when I was a kid because of the cool and chill vibes with melodies which stay in your mind. "Shiver" what a banger and Chris Martin clearly has a unique voice and the chords in it are amazing and the guitar riffs are dope af. "Spies" those kind of "electonic bugs" used in it are insane and again the melody is really good. "Yellow" and "Trouble" damned these 2 songs are incredible, like I don't know if these songs were used in a film or not but it would be insane for sure. So basically, I really enjoyed this album, it allowed me to remember some great time from my childhood and I could realize that even if Coldplay may have copy some songs, their debuts were great.
So glad that mom and dad picked a good one. If I ever get married it's a good thing I know what I'll dance with my mom to. Manages to make emotions the forefront of the album while building around them in a soft spoken and vulnerable way that continues to resonate. None of the gimmicks of being big and famous, I've always appreciated the straight-forwardness of this album and its nostalgic place in my memory
Great
I quite enjoyed listening to this album today, except for Yellow which is completely overplayed and I never want to hear it again. Not a massive fan of the band as it went on, but I feel like Coldplay deserves their place on this list - they had such a huge impact on music in the early naughties! If we stopped listening to music because the musicians were insufferable wankers - there'd be no more music to listen to, ne? (except for Bono who I reserve my right to dislike intensely) Piano, guitar and men singing in falsetto just does something to me - I must admit!
25 years ago remember my roommates listening to this jeez.
Simple, kind of muddy production but a good vibe. Some classic really memorable sad boy songs and I rate it.
my fav coldplay album. saw them live last month and it really made me listen to more coldplay, as i wasn’t as big of a fan before. this record is a classic and has aged rlly well. of course yellow is the most iconic song, but sparks and don’t panic are also fire. just an easy listen. hard to believe music like this is 25 yrs old
lovely, surprised by how much i liked it
Melodic, calm, mystical. For as much criticism as Coldplay gets, this album was surprisingly very enjoyable. It was the right amount of easy rhythms paired with soothing vocals an and harmonies. Some Radiohead influence can be heard, and even some classical influence for that matter. Really enjoyed this one.
Last year was the year I discovered I do like Coldplay, and this re-listen confirms it. This is just really good, I love how it sounds, melancholic and warm. I think the hatred many have for this band blinds them to the fact they did start their career with a really good album
Damn, now I'm gonna have to be one of those people who defend Coldplay because their early work was good. But seriously Don't Tell, Shiver and Yellow are all great songs. Genuinely shocked about how much of this I liked, just goes to show you need to give music a fair shot, free of bias. 4 stars. Good album cover as well.
Another solid Coldplay album. So odd that it feels like the artists crop up around the same time on this site.
After only ever hearing about Coldplay and only having heard to Vive La Vada, I’m glad that I opened my horizons and were able to listen to their debut album, *Parachutes.* *Parachutes* is a nice adventure into dreamy, emotive, and rather mellow indie rock. I feel as if this description is best fit by the album’s fantastic closer, *Everything’s Not Lost.* This seven minute epic is so full of atmosphere than I can’t help but lose myself in its spacey guitar sounds and lyricism. Its piano, while being rather simplistic, is a good driving force of emotion. This brings me to the vocals of Chris Martin. They’re very emotive, gentle, and really drive said emotion of the songs home. I dig them a lot! That said, the lyricism is full of emotion as well. A very good example of this is *Sparks.* I love its acoustic guitar and emotional vocals from Chris. It’s a definite highlight of the album for me. Another good example is *Spies.* It’s one of the best songs on the album, is one of the longest songs on the album, and yet it didn’t drag and it kept going forward. Its lyricism plays a big part in that. This album also has some variety while still having a consistent mood, which I appreciate. An example of this is *Yellow.* It is a much more raw song compared to the rest on the album, and it’s a nice change of pace in the middle of the album. *Parachutes* is a good debut album, and I now understand where Coldplay originally got their popularity. If you’re looking for something chill while still having energy, I’d recommend this one.
Actually not that bad. I was not expecting to enjoy this, but it's actually pretty good. I don't think I'd ever put this on, but I would not mind listening to this again.
Overall a great album, coldplay doesn’t disappoint with the first album. they have such a unique style here and you can really hear a lot of the emotions portrayed in the music. the songwriting is great along with the composition, and the album does a good job of letting you drift and letting you go where ever the album takes you
Coldplay may sound a little similar from song to song, on this and other albums, but this is a solid album. Don't forget the impact these guys had on alternative rock when they hit the scene with the album - came out of nowhere, but Yellow was everywhere. And soon Coldplay was too, with many bands and producers trying to capture the same sound. Yes, there are bands that do it better or more consistently, but these guys are pretty good at what they do and this was a big album at the turn of the century. I can't say there's a bad song in the first 6 (of 10) on this album - Don't Panic, Shiver, Spies, Sparks, Yellow, and Trouble. And if you're a fan of alternative rock, you probably know them all. The last 4 songs dip a bit but still solid. I kind of prefer their follow-up album but this was a good debut and a time in their career when I enjoyed their sound.
3.5
Lots of gems in here. A few dull ones too.
I could see this album failing to match a moving man in stride, but for one stuck in their own shoes, I feel struck asunder meeting its gaze. This album may've made me a Coldplay fan, and I for that I almost feel apologetic knowing what they've become. A not 3 and an almost 4. Others've done it better but perhaps not under the spotlight.
A time before Coldplay was annoying IMO. I think this has aged well and deserves its praise. It was of it’s time, really good back then. Holds up, what more is there to say?
Easy record to listen to, esential in any record collection. Great first album.
I liked this album a lot. I've never heard it all the way through, just a couple of songs. It's really beautiful and I can't believe it came out in 2000.
Love this album
Look, new Coldplay is incomprehensibly bad. Its the worst. The worst type of music, music that is designed to be played at grocery stores. However their old stuff absolutely rips. I saw Coldplay in 2022 and was not really excited, but was blown away and became a fan (of the old stuff) for life. You'd be hard-pressed to find 4 songs in a row on any album that rip as hard as Shiver, Spies, Sparks, and Yellow. Other than that, the songs are pretty boring and dull Best Song: Yellow Rating: 7.5 /10 4 Stars
"Don't Shiver" is one of my all-time favorite songs. I think it's brilliant. The rest of the album is hit or miss for me, but overall I like it.
To be honest I don't get the insane hype around Coldplay, but I do get why it has wide appeal. This album also really reminds me of high school... somewhere between a 3 and a 4 but I'm rounding up
Coldplay’s Parachutes is, in many ways, a snapshot of their earliest promise—a record steeped in melancholy, nostalgia, and those iconic hooks that would come to define their sound. For some, it’s easy to dismiss Coldplay as middle-of-the-road, a band that seldom ventures into the unknown. Yet, when you step back, there’s an undeniable magic in this debut. It’s a competent, heartfelt collection of songs that set the stage for one of the biggest bands in the world, even if it doesn’t fully realize the creative risks it hints at beneath the surface. Listening to Parachutes, I’m struck by the guitar-driven pop-rock at its core. The shimmering guitars, tinged with tasteful delay and modulation effects, create a soundscape that’s as earnest as it is atmospheric. There’s a certain charm in the simplicity of the melodies and the emotional weight behind Chris Martin’s delivery. Tracks like Shiver and Spies remind me of a Coldplay reaching for an alternative edge, leaning into a rawness that would later be smoothed over in their more polished works. Still, there’s a sense of safety here, a reluctance to push boundaries. They flirt with unique ideas but often pull back, opting for comfort over surprise. It’s frustrating, in a way, because you can hear the possibility of something more just beneath the surface—a potential that remains tantalizingly out of reach. For me, the second half of the album resonates more deeply. From Trouble through to the hidden track, Life Is For Living, there’s a personal vulnerability in the music that feels genuine. These songs unfold like moody, introspective reflections, offering a glimpse of authenticity and earnestness that might explain why this debut continues to connect with so many. It feels like disjointed sad songs strung together, but somehow, Coldplay manages to sell the vibe, imperfections and all. Yet, my relationship with this album is complicated. It’s not just about the music—it’s about the memories tied to it. Parachutes became a time capsule of sorts, forever linked to a difficult period in my life. Coldplay was the first band I saw live on my own, at a venue that wasn’t Glastonbury, where I always had other people to lean on. I thought I was ready, and I wasn’t. They were undeniably great, but I wasn’t prepared to feel what I felt that night. That push and pull, the simultaneous longing for more from this album and relief at being able to shelve it when later records arrived, has shaped my view of Parachutes. It’s a bittersweet strain down memory lane, a reminder of a time when I felt everything too much. Maybe that’s why I don’t come back to this album often. It’s not that I dislike Coldplay—it’s that Parachutes pulls me too deeply into my own head, to places I don’t always want to revisit. In that way, it’s akin to how some people feel about Radiohead—an inescapable emotional gravity. And while I’ve drifted from Coldplay in the years since, there’s a part of me that still holds onto this record. It’s flawed, it’s safe, but it’s also earnest and human. Maybe that’s why it lingers.
I know that it’s sort of a meme to shit talk Coldplay now a days, and I’m certainly not here to defend their more modern releases, but in my opinion this is a really pretty record. Chris Martin’s voice had a certain smoothness to it that’s really pleasing sonically. It’s not the most exciting record, nor does it really push any boundaries, but it is really nice music. I enjoyed every song, start to finish. I think this album really earned all the record sales it had. I never really paid attention to this record previously, but I am pretty happy I listened to it now. 4*.
It was a really solid album. The tone was warm and comforting. One of the best mainstrem projects I have ever listened. 8.3/10
I like it. Just kind of nice and naive compared to their later stuff. Maybe familiarity bias though.
For all the shit Coldplay gets, this is a very good album
Really liked it. Nice calm vibe. Actually like it better than current Coldplay music
I love this album. I love early Coldplay, and I’m not really interested in how uncool that is- it’s almost worse than still liking their modern stuff, since Chris Martin clearly now leans into the fact he grew up in Zimbabwe and that’s overall sort of interesting, except the songs are lame. Anyway. Of course they’re Radiohead without the art, but Radiohead never made anything as lovely as the Yellow video. I do think Yellow is the centrepiece of this record, overtly sentimental and sort of nonsensical, sounding both quite grungy and at the same time massively twinkly and romantic. Sparks is just gorgeous, a perfect slow dance with lots of cymbal, and the lyrics to Parachutes are super romantic- it’s a very soppy album in a lot of ways. Chris Martin sounds pretty meek and wounded across the whole thing, but I think particularly for songs like Trouble that works perfectly- “Oh no, what’s this” and “thought of all the stupid things I’ve said”. The same goes for Everything’s Not Lost: “When I counted up my demons/saw there was one for every day”. He’s a sad sensitive guy and a bit of a dweeb- he’s not the romantic muscley guys of the 90s and he’s not an angry Kurt Cobain type, a sort of norm core indie archetype there wasn’t many of at that time. It’s a very Y2K album in a lot of ways- Spies has a real turn of the millennium paranoia to it and We Never Change sounds like the idealised end of history that defined that time immediately pre-9/11. The Moby-esque instrumental after the chorus in Everything’s Not Lost sounds like Sigur Ros, who had come out with Ágætis byrjun the year before- there was a new age European thing going on in that period which died over time as the world seemed less hopeful with wars and financial collapse- it’s been a crapsack century. I played the album in full three times over the weekend, and listened to the second and third Coldplay albums too for context- they really were a good band for a bit, and it’s a shame they’re so embarrassing because I know they give a great live show, but I just couldn’t. It’s a 4.5 rounded DOWN to 4 on this one for me, because it just doesn’t feel like a 5, but Rush of Blood might make it if we ever get there.
nostalgic hits?
Some good songs, and dare I say interesting things (tape loops etc) - for a coldplay album... not bad. I'll give it 3.5, rounded up to 4
Call me basic because I think this is a solid album. The popular singles are still good and I think the collection of songs work to build musically over the record. 4/5
Coldplay - Parachutes Kind of depressed me a little listening to this, and then seeing what the band would end up becoming. Although i like Viva La Vida, I think they look the wrong lessons from it and have spent the 15+ years since desperately chasing hits and success, when at their best, that early period is quite good. Shiver is such a good song, from what I understand it's one of chris Martins least favourites. Someone should play him something he has written in the last ten years. Overall parachutes is really really good. I'd go the high end of a 4 on it. But it's so depressing to look at what they've become.
There’s not really a bad song on this album: Yellow, Trouble and Don’t Panic are highlights. Everything’s Not Lost has always been my favourite song on here. That said, it is slower than I remember and several songs could do with being a minute shorter. They could really write good stuff back in the day 4.25/5
Difficult to grasp why so many people are averse to Coldplay. Hit the ground running here; some absolute bangers. Trouble, shiver and everything’s not lost highlights (love yellow but bit of Mr Brightside to it)
Another fantastic album. Not my favorite Coldplay album, but one of the top three!
Cold summer breeze
I stopped listening after Yellow, but I enjoyed it .
Such a nice album. Shout out garden state
This is my freshman year of college. Cannot separate from the memories. Me, Amy, Jaclyn, Aaron, Kevin, Ben, hanging out and listening ... Rob yelling about it being a shitty album. Maybe it is, but I still know all the words 23 years later. This is probably a 3 star album, but giving it 4 for the feels.
Nice sound but depressing at times
Really pleasantly surprised by this it was beautiful
Lovely early Coldplay. Much more authentic and heartfelt, rougher edges.
Coldplay has always been one of those middle of the road, nothing special, nothing bad kinda bands for me. They got some hits but I wouldnt place them anywhere near the top of a list usually. That being said, I'm enjoying this album, it hits their particular sound pretty early, Chris Martins' vocals especially. Its a little more melancholic than their later entries were. Even just the intro song, Sparks, a little more quiet and introspective than later releases. Yellow especially, it has a good lasting quality to it, but I'm sure thats why its still considered one of their better songs.
Took a date to Laser Coldplay™️ and totally made my move to hold her hand during “Yellow”. 4 stars for how hard my heart was racing despite her being a 4
For a debut album and reading about how it was made, you can certainly tell there was a change half way through the album at Yellow. Second half of album was more enjoyable. Very solid album overall.
89/100. A very nice and calming dream pop/rock album. I’m not a big fan of Coldplay’s newer releases, but their first two albums are absolutely stunning. There aren’t really any faults with this album—some of the songs even give me a sense of nostalgia from my childhood.
Consistently a pleasant work of music. I enjoy it every time.
This one popped up on a day that I just one something fun to lighten up my mood a little, and it did just that. Fave tracks: Spies, Parachutes, Everything's Not Lost.
In the beginning Coldplay was decent
Album still holds up, and this is considering I struggle listening to most, or basically anything they manufactured after this.
Buttery toast, mac and cheese, vanilla ice cream, scrambled eggs, corn on the cob - things can be boring and family friendly, corny and cheesy and still good. Embrace the cringe, succumb to the acoustic sincerity, let go of the sneer and just let the earnestness wash over you.
A fun listen with some catchy songs and very raw.
This album reminds me of my best friend who passed away, so it automatically gets a higher score.
I was turned off by the band initially because of all their commercial success right out of the gates, but this is a great album and they deserve all the accolades they got at the time and now!
sparks is still one of my songs of all time
Mellow, pleasant, I've come to appreciate this band over time
I have always liked Coldplay and even grown to appreciate them more when I heard them perform locally and saw the effort they put out to put on a good show. This album is a good example of a slight danger some bands might encounter as they build a bigger library and last a long time. I call it the "greatest hits" syndrome. It is when ANY sort of greatest hit album from a certain band would be a five star album. It makes any "normal" album they put out just not quite as good. VERY few (although there are a small number) of bands have full on five star albums where every song is as good as the next that is not a greatest hit type anthology. So, while Parachutes is a quite good album by a quite good band, it made me want to listen to other songs by them as well, and spend the afternoon on a Coldplay binge.
I guess it is very fashionable to hate Coldplay and certainly as they morphed into a stadium pop band I lost interest in them. However, this first album is a good album and highlights their excellent songwriting ability. There are some great tracks: Shiver, Spies, Trouble and the majestic Yellow and no real duds. In criticism, all the songs sound the same and as such it makes listening to the album in full a struggle. Those decent tracks in their own make my best of playlist, but I doubt I will listen to the album again.
sime goid song sounds like radiohead lite
Just a really nice album. It's a shame Coldplay didn't expand on this sound later on in their career because I think this utilizes Chris Martin's voice well, more-so than the stadium belters littered throughout their most recent works. Top 3: 1. High Speed 2. Shiver 3. Yellow Bottom 1: Life Is For Living (Hidden Track) Overall Score: 8.1/10
Genuinely a very solid album. Coldplay gets a lot of undeserved hate for making consistent music and putting on awesome shoes (though that obviously isn't factored into the review). This record feels relaxing, with most of the songs just making you feel like you're floating. I love their style, and I love their message. My favorites were Shiver, Spies, Trouble, and the hidden track Life is for Living.
Coldplay is really great when you don’t have someone in your ear telling you they suck. It’s widely appealing for a reason. The guitar on Shiver is really great. Favorite songs were Shiver, Spies, Yellow, Trouble, and High Speed.
Considering my memories of Coldplay, I expected to not like this album. I was pleasantly surprised. It's an entertaining listen with a fair amount of variance from track-to-track.
Este álbum es especial, quizá porque hay un par de temas que no usan la guitarra electrica y la banda muestra su calidad magnífica. Me gusta
i loved this album. the instrumentals and lyrics are forlorn and pensive. Chris martin sounds amazing. it’s interesting to see how coldplay used to sound and compare it. my favourite song was Trouble.
No. 286/1001 Don't Panic 4/5 Shiver 3/5 Spies 3/5 Sparks 3/5 Yellow 5/5 Trouble 5/5 Parachutes 4/5 High Speed 3/5 We Never Change 3/5 Everything’s Not Lost 3/5 Average: 3,6 Pretty good pop rock records. Some stand out songs.
it’s pretty good
The highs on this album are pretty high, and it's far better than anything they've done recently. I would have liked some more variation, or just some more energy at some points of the album, but overall this was a really solid album.
Fínasta plata, rúllar ljúft og eldist vel. Yellow ber auðvitað höfuð og herðar yfir önnur lög, en önnur fín lög þarna eins og Dont panic og Sparks.
People forget how good early Coldplay was before they sold out. 7/10
Good album but some lyrics are so dumb
So many good songs on one album. But something about it is a little cringe.
coldplay before they went mainstream. so much better than their new stuff. 8/10
Fantastic album
Great listen. Could play on repeat and enjoy every time. Coldplay hasn't really been in my repertoire too much in the past but I can see the appeal. Loved Sparks, Yellow and Trouble.
Some nostalgic hits in here. Absolutely love the song Yellow although that may be a little bit of a cliche but who cares!
Coldplay is one of those bands that got a lot of what I always thought was unwarranted hate from music snobs. Sure, they’re a little boring, but they make pleasant, and occasionally great, music. 4/5 Highlights: Shiver Yellow Everything’s Not Lost
4.5 if I could
Good sound. Catchy tunes. Good for calm listening.
Such a good album. All the feels.
Very casual engaging album. Enjoyed from start to end. Will be listening again in times when need relaxation.
Nice alternative album. Coldplay was really good until they weren’t, and this is the really good version.
i remember my best friend showed me The Blue Room E.P. and it felt like peering into another universe. in this world, Coldplay is considered a second rate Radiohead ripoff and never crossed over, never shed their influences, and never quite sounded distinct. maybe "Bigger Stronger" ends up played during a radio segment displaying OK Computer's influence on the British music scene. they have a few bangers, but they at most have 1,000 ratings on their first album. they become a curiosity at best -- a Panchiko with a label deal that puts them in debt for the next decade. however, instead of doing that, Coldplay became Coldplay. this has made a lot of people angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. i, for one, am Coldplay neutral. i know that it's easy to turn them into a punchline, to say their brand of rock is bland or non-descript, and to compare their work as a sinister lead-in to the Chainsmokers-collaborating pop monster they would become in the 2010s. however, personally, there's some significant charm for me in the post-Britpop sound in general, and Coldplay are a prime slice of that sound. it harkens back to the 70's studio rock record -- not to say that it's exactly like a Fleetwood Mac or a Carole King record, but that its elements are recorded in such a way that the songs feel as if they've always existed (i'm inexplicably reminded of Jon Brion on a few of the instrumental touches - a glockenspiel on "Sparks", or how the lead guitar bends around on "Trouble"). maybe the lyrics are too vaguely psychedelic to sink one's teeth into, but a lot of the time, it's not about the words you write, it's how you sing them. Coldplay always had the sense about them that they got remarkably lucky and seized upon it. you could call them sell-outs or softies; i doubt you could call them derivative in good faith. we all know what Coldplay is supposed to sound like -- they sound like "Yellow", or "Trouble". they sure as hell don't sound like "Bigger Stronger".
Pre-listening thoughts: I’ve heard this is Coldplay at some of their best. I know a few songs but hoping the entire record isn’t as slow as Sparks despite it being a good song Post/during listening thoughts: this is like objectively good but for whatever reason I’m just not clicking with it as much as I thought I would. I love Viva la Vida (song not album, haven’t heard that one all the way thru) and was hoping for more big pieces like that I guess. Or like Clocks like that is such a good song. There are some bangers though. I mean it’s good I’m just not as eager about it as most. 7/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah Fav tracks: Shiver, Sparks, Yellow, Trouble Least fav tracks: didn’t dislike any per say but was bored a little
I wanted them to have more energy, but what they brought was a 3.5.
I can see why Coldplay is so popular. I would listen to this again.
quite enjoyable, chill. very easy listening
It’s hilarious that Coldplay is such a controversial band. Its funny that people care that hard. But yea, had they kept this energy for later albums things could have been different. i feel like a lot of albums would be getting half stars if that were possible. but then thatd be a scale of 10 i guess.
Wish there were half stars. Hard to rate this the same as other four stars but hard to give it just three just on the strength of its singles. Definitely benefits from being easy enough listen to ignore the lyrics. Really prefer smaller budget Coldplay.

i didnt hate coldplay i just never got ecited for them and therefore never listened to an album all the way through, this is actually decent and i really like Shiver
What's this? I got Coldplay's debut album within 10 days of them releasing their newest album? How fun! Anyways, I know a lot of people don't like Coldplay, but I've gotta say... they started out on a good foot. Parachutes may not be the best debut album I've ever heard. I've heard so many that I honestly don't even know which one I'd call the best. However, Parachutes is also far from the worst debut album I've heard. This is a great album. A lot of what I really liked in A Rush of Blood to the Head is still here. There really isn't even much of a noticeable difference between the two in quality. Then again, I got Rush of Blood like a year ago, so my memory of the album isn't perfect. Still, I know what I liked about that album and it's also here in Parachutes. The sound is pleasant, yet also somewhat emotional. This is obvious in songs like "Yellow" and "Sparks" which are some of the highlights of this album. I like Chris Martin's voice. The writing is solid. I can definitely see the overall comparisons to early Radiohead that people have made with early Coldplay. Of course, I like what I've heard from Radiohead more than what I've heard of Coldplay, but I still really like Coldplay's first two albums. I don't really know which one I like more. Both are quite good. 4/5.
I was working at EMI when this album came out. It's an excellent debut. Alas, they were dead to me after this.
Erstaunlicher weise waren da Songs drauf von denen ich dachte sie seien viel jünger. Konnte man gut entspannt im Hintergrund laufen lassen, passte zur Herbststimmung.
Top heavy with great singles, but the second half of the album isn't as strong. Great songwriting.
I wanted to hate this because their hits are annoying, but I found this to be a nice listen. Maybe they're an ok band after all? 3.5 stars.
I obviously know the hits from this album already, haven't heard the deep cuts before, it's pretty good. I always discounted Coldplay back in the day as being a super lame pop band. Chris Martin has such an interesting voice, I really like it on these older tunes that are more indie/rock than pure pop that they went into later on. The production on this album is awesome, such cool vibes, I love the sounds on Spies in particular. This is the perfect morning album.
Classic
got this for the day after the band seemingly announced their final stretch, a kind of emotional announcement for me even as a critter who likes things to be Manageably Finite. there are few bands out there that hit the marks of Comfort as well as coldplay does, depending on the song and era the emotional impression is either that The Song Is Speaking To You Directly In An Intimate Setting, or The Song Is Throwing A Party That Everyone Is Invited To And You Dont Need To Come Its No Pressure But It Will Be Very Happy When It Sees You Arrive. obviously the former is where the magic lies in this very beautiful record, which ive been underrating p hard. there is an earnest and inviting and hyper-populist quality to all of coldplays music that i think deserves a lot more respect simply because basically no one else has worked so hard at this specific craft...the lack of self-aggrandizement and ability to speak across so many demographics genuinely reminds me of CCR or something. early coldplay is not my personal favorite, ive spent the most time in the post-viva la vida lush maximalism (x&y splits the difference rly well becoming my favorite of theirs currently), but the What If The Bends Was Sweet stuff is growing on me. and they got way way way better takes on palestine then radiohead too lmao
I need this album on vinyl. It starts so soft and smooth. This is such an album you can listen to with people but at the same time by yourself and feel so many different emotions. I would walk around my house singing all day if I were Chris Martin. AND IT WAS ALLLLLL YELLOWWWWWW I feel like Coldplay is a band where you either like them or someone told you they weren't cool, so you pretend they aren't good. We Never Change is a song I've never heard, and I'm really happy I finally did. all in all 7.5/10
Nice cozy songs.
I hate current Coldplay as much as anyone else, but this is a genuinely good album. In fact it's so good they spend the next 20 years recording variations of it, and everyone got fed up - but this first iteration was great.
Is it weird to like Coldplay in 2024? Probably. Do I still really like some of their albums? Probably.
Lullabies for adults, but (yawn) it works.
Its so chill and exactly Coldplay. Many songs are recognizable and the vibe is consistent.
4/5
You get bulled nowadays for listening to Coldplay, but idc I enjoyed it it’s nice fuck off
4.25
Damn. I really like this. I always pass off Coldplay as overrated. Listening to this on headphones in airport and I really like it. Easy 4 stars.
The soundtrack of my youth, feels a bit tired in places
Gotta love Coldplay's old albums. They scratch some sort of musical itch.
Hadnt listened for agws, but it had aged well.
Classic start to the 2000's. Saw this tour, paid $9.47 to see them play all 9 songs and nothing more. Great album from the outside, "Don't Panic is a nice intro to what Coldplay will become over time. "Yellow" is perhaps my favorite song of that initial decade, and "Shiver", "Spies" and "Trouble" all provide star power. This is the first Top 1000 album I have been served up over the last 2 wks that actually was a Top 1000 album. The last 3 tracks are all a bit flat. Not the masterpiece that "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" or "X&Y" would be but it still stands up today. 3.5 stars.
First listen. Wow.
Dense and already so so so so mastery songwriting. What the hell happened in the following years…?!
Classic Coldplay - super chill. I liked all the songs, but they do all tend to sound similar.
Fav: Yellow Least Fav: We Never Change Yellow is such a perfect song. Rest of the album was rather nice with the exception of a couple dull moments. Even the weakest track was nice to listen to and proves early Coldplay was good, especially when you see what they’ve become…
This is a very good album. Most of the songs are really strong. It's a slow one, but a good one.
Better than its successor, A Rush of Blood to the Head. Synths definitely have their place as an instrument, but I think Coldplay's music is much stronger without it. And following this idea, the band's attempts to come across as "Radiohead incarnate" are less obvious in Parachutes, with a slew of focused, powerful, slow-tempo songs paving the way for a great deal of 21st century music. The vocal is pretty good, and distinctive from other contemporary modern rock bands. The mixing is done perfectly – almost a little too perfectly – but with the deceptively simple music, it elegantly tows the line between too bland and too pretentious. Fantastic guitar playing. I dig the acoustic sound. Most of the music is centred around the guitar and vocals, and there's a fresh yet melancholic atmosphere here that I haven't seen many other albums achieve. The lyrics are consistently really good (enough to get the album banned in China upon its release). I do wish the sounds were a little more varied between tracks, but I also admire the commitment to one sound. It's a good sound. 4/5 Key tracks: Don't Panic, Sparks, Yellow, Everything's Not Lost
Excellent, would’ve benefited from a bit of editing.
Such a classic. There are some filler songs but ultimately worth listening to cover to cover
There was a period when I thought I might be into Coldplay, because I discovered that I quite liked Yellow, and Til Kingdom Come has been one of my favourite songs since watching The Amazing Spider-Man however many years ago. I tried listening to one of their recent albums, and didn’t really get much out of it. I clearly should have started at the beginning, because Parachutes is really quite good. It’s quite top heavy, I don’t remember as much of the later songs as I do the first few. But on the other hand, having actually actively listened to a full, acclaimed Coldplay album now, I can see where they’ve been influential on subsequent artists I’ve liked. And that has had an effect in my appreciation for them. I can see how this has been influential. That would be enough to land it at least a three on my rating, but I can also see how it had been influential on a lot of music I really love, and that pushes it up even further. I still don’t think I’m fully sold in Coldplay. But Parachutes is not just a good, solid Pop Rock record, it’s arguably the definitive Pop Rock record of the 2000’s. Every other Pop band that took cues from Alternative sounds like this, but none of them had quite the staying power. And there is a reason for that. None of them ever reached the heights that Coldplay did. And, although I still can’t identify what it was that defined those heights, I cannot deny that they existed. Parachutes is a good album. I’m not sold enough to declare that Coldplay are a good band, but this is worth checking out. Let go of some of the cynicism, embrace some Poptimism. Parachutes is good enough that it appears on this list. There’s a reason for that
Not a huge fan. 3.8 stars
Good music for monging out. Yellow and Trouble were stand out songs.
8/10 for falsetto
Very good. Better than their newer stuff
This definitely surprised me a bit. I know the big radio hits from Coldplay but other than the other album on on this list I didn't know much of their music. I liked this one a lot more overall than "A Rush of Blood to The Head". The only song I knew "Yellow" in my opinion was one of the weaker ones. Still decently good. Makes me wonder if they had evolved in a different direction from this if I would have liked them more.
7.5/10
do i like it as much as when i used to listen to it over and over in middle school? no, but sometimes i need some pre stadium rock
I never understood the Coldplay hate. I'm not a fan of their newer bubblegum style, but their first few albums were amazing.
this is a good album
If The Velvet Underground is responsible for my recent second music enlightenment, then Coldplay is probably responsible for my first music enlightenment back in 2012 or so. Growing up I never really listened to any music beyond what played on the Top 40 station, and the '80s music that my dad listened to felt thoroughly uncool to me as a child. I don't remember the details for sure, but based on the timing (Mylo Xyloto was released in 2011), I think that "Paradise" was basically being played on repeat on the radio, I liked the song, and for the first time I made an effort to see what else this band had to offer. I remember many hours of sitting on our shared family computer and listening to terrible-quality Youtube versions of songs from Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head, X&Y, and Viva La Vida. For awhile I really just dug into the Coldplay discography, and then over time I began to broaden and find a lot of the other bands that stick out as early favorites of mine (Blind Pilot, Of Monsters and Men, The Lumineers, Young the Giant, etc.). I created my all-encompassing ongoing Spotify playlist in February 2014, and added 31 Coldplay songs in the first two weeks (including 5 from this album). This is a lot of background, but the point is that, whatever anyone thinks of Coldplay in 2024, they were a huge part of my development, both musically and otherwise. So what do I think of this today? While I'm sure I've listened to this top-to-bottom before, it's been many years since then at this point. The nostalgia is for real, without a doubt. The first few notes into "Don't Panic" definitely brought me back immediately, and many of my favorite songs here are on the front side of the album. If I'm going to try to be objective here, I think my take is that this is still very good, but not particularly groundbreaking. Every song on this is enjoyable, the lyrics are strong, but when trying to be objective, something about it feels like they're a little short of something perfect. The back-to-back "Sparks" and "Yellow" section is definitely the closest it gets to perfection, but things fall off a bit after "Trouble". It helps to have 256 albums worth of context from this project. Coldplay has clearly moved on from the Britpop sound, and you can kind of see how something like Travis' The Man Who leads to this which leads to all of the Coldplay sound-alikes that would come after. I'm not sure how much Coldplay is on this list, but their next few albums are also very strong, and were favorites of mine at one point in time. I'm not much of a fan of Coldplay these days. This is not an uncommon opinion but I think after Viva La Vida their music got quite a bit more formulaic and pop-driven, and less interesting as a result. They've also been a massive stadium-pop-rock band for so long now that it's hard to think about this coming way before all that. Trying to strip that all away though, I can definitely still see the appeal of this 24 years later, and despite the music they're making now, there's always been real talent at the core. This is probably the longest review I've written yet, and after all that I'm giving it 4 stars. I think about this band very little today, and this album isn't perfect, but it's really very consistently good, and it's an important one for me personally. Still enjoyable all these years later. Favorite song: Yellow Other: Don't Panic, Shiver, Sparks, Trouble, High Speed, We Never Change, Everything's Not Lost 7/26/24
Don't understand why this is so hated
I thought that I would have been over this album that I listened to a lot in the early aughts but boy did this hit hard on a revisit. I’m sure that most of it is nostalgia but the first half really works and even though it loses steam towards the end, I love it.
I have to admit I have repeatedly stated I dislike Coldplay over past 15+ years, but haven’t listened to them in all that time. Yet I really enjoyed listening to this album- maybe I just needed a second go around with them.
Sparks and yellow
A surprisingly good debut album, surprisingly from Coldplay.
I loved Coldplay back in the days, don't really dig their music after 2005 or so. Great album!
I listened to shockingly little coldplay until now. It's a very good album, super enjoyable listen.
Listening to this through headphones, in the evening, has helped me to remember why I liked Coldplay: it's like looking up at the stars and realising we are seeing them as they were a loooong time ago ... And we live in a beautiful world, yeah we do, yeah we do. There are some beautiful tracks on this album, and they still manage to get through. Shiver does just what it says: spine-tingling. And Sparks is just so pretty. And then there's Trouble ... Okay, I have to conclude that this is a good album. There, I've said it.
There’s a really specific, hazy nostalgia that I get from old Coldplay, and another really specific, subtle euphoric feeling that their guitars give when they lift off on songs like Yellow. ‘Don’t Panic’ and ‘Sparks’ were probably my favourites though - their soft, campfire song like sound really hits the spot. I think that after ‘Trouble’ the album kinda fades off though, which is why I’ve given a 4.
I know Coldplay is polarizing, and rightly so given their recent work - but their first two albums rightfully put them on the map, and they are among my favorite albums of all time. Rush of Blood to the Head is a better IMO, but this album is still excellent, and I think Shiver is my favorite Coldplay song.
I like early 2000s rock. A little too vibey for my taste but still good
Simply like it, and I can listen to this album without thinking of Chris Martin. I mean, come on, he is not MJ or some other criminal. He is just not every bushwacker's or woodchopper's definition of male. Do I care?
Great debut album. Although the music wasn't groundbreaking or experimental, they still made it unique.
Chill coldplsy er jo sykt flinke
Enjoyed
8/10. Very good. Was slower than I expected but ended on a high note with Everything’s Not Lost, bumping it from 7 to 8.
Don't Panic Shiver Sparks Yellow Trouble High Speed Everything's Not Lost
I remember not liking Coldplay and thinking his voice was annoying and kind of fake. Now with a relisten and 10ish years since I last tried, they are way more enjoyable. Nice mellow backing music mixed with his soft voice makes a delightful listen. 8/10
3.75 catchy and comforting
Exceptional guitar tones - this era of Coldplay is bussing.
its like radiohead but less interesting. better than i was expecting though. 7/10
Have completely forgotten that Coldplay at one point managed to be both hard-hitting and sensual at the same time, while staying at the forefront of indie genre-ification (when indie became a genre and not a status descriptor).
A good debut album. Mellow, Moody, Cold…Play
Coldplay cop a lot of grief, but this first album had some really great tracks. One of those albums that takes me back to the year of release and brings back them good memories.
One of the best albums ever. I wish I could do half stars because 4.5/5 for sure.
Great album, enjoyed this a bit more than I thought. Some tracks were a bit alright but some of them were pretty great, especially the last two. Solid album 7/10
A great album, but rather somber.
Enjoyed
Very good for a first album release. Yellow is the stand out track.
when Coldplay was good before they got all electronic. their 2nd album is their best but this has great tunes athough Yellow has become a little annoying with how played it was at the time.
I generally go 'blurgh' when I hear the word Coldplay. This was really good though. I knew basically all of the songs on this, which is surprising considering I'm not even a casual listener. Guess this means the band is uber successful. Well played Chris and co.
Coldplay has definitely grown on me over the years
Wish they hadn't polished their sound so much in their last few albums. The first three albums were special.
First two Coldplay albums were great.
The hits hold up better than I thought they would, and Don't Panic is a good opener. Some lulls though, it's probably closer to a 3.5 but I'm feeling generous
Pleasant listening all the way through. It's a pretty sleepy album, but Sparks, Yellow and Trouble are super solid songs imo.
Still a strong album, though I didn't care much for the last couple of songs, and at times the vocals got a little annoying.
Muy bueno!

Chris Martin is an insufferable asshat but I have to admit that I do enjoy most of this one quite a bit.
Legendary
4.5. Yellow is iconic, but I thoroughly enjoyed every other track, sometimes more.
I thought I’d listened to this whole album back when it came out, but I don’t remember half the songs. “Don’t Panic,” “Shiver,” “Yellow,” and “Trouble” are my favorite songs, but they’re all pretty good. I’m hit or miss on Coldplay in general, but this is one of their best albums.
Given that Chris Martin seems like a pretty happy go lucky kinda guy and tries to do a lot for charity, I can only assume the reviews calling him a twat/knob/prick are from utterly miserable, envious and bitter blokes. And it is blokes, certain types of men just can't deal with guys like him. Anyway, I digress. This isn't music for bedwetters, it's just a nice collection of songs that all have a decent hook and elicit emotion upon listening. 99.9% of the moaners here couldn't even begin to write songs as good as these.
i literally loveee this album every song is good + sooo nostalgic. if u don’t like coldplay ur lying :o
The first band I listened to at 12 this album is still good
Listening to this off the back of Luton's Radio One Big Weekend where we are very much in a pro-Coldplay mood. A very chill album that achieves exactly what it sets out to do. Coldplay don't deserve the hate, they're actually just pretty reliable.
Really enjoyed it. Felt like I was in a movie
I was a big fan of Coldplay in my teens and as such my favourite albums by Coldplay corresponds with that time ("A rush of blood.." to "Via Va La vida"). For some reason I never really got into Parachutes and after listening to it I don't really know why. While I've feel I've lost interest in Coldplay over the years I found this album really enjoyable. I think I came to it with the perfect amount of background, knowing some of the songs and knowing the artist. "Yellow" is actually one of the weaker tracks and I prefer the more piano driven "Trouble" and "Don't Panic". Thinking about it again I think that is why I never really listened to this album, I never liked "Yellow". Anyway, this was a really nice and chill album and I listened to it a second time in the evening while reading. Happy to have come back to this one. After being in a bit of a rut with these albums with many bland albums in a row, I found this a refreshing find and gave me some motivation to listen to more.
At the time of their greatest popularity, I resisted Coldplay. At the time I claimed a distaste for their vocal style, but now as I look back I wonder if the explanation might have been much simpler: my sister loved them. I'll attempt to shrug those long ago born prejudices as I launch into this. Album opens on a super laid back, Don't Panic. Song doesn't really do too much, but is clean, short, and sweet. Shiver is mixed in a deliberately muddy way and uses a guitar tone that evoke a sort of "beach-rock" vibe. Honestly, this is a pretty sweet song -- the guitar work is really nice and bright. Sparks -> Trouble is a pretty solid run of hit singles. Yellow, obviously being paramount among them all. I love the piano melody on Trouble. Aspects of the instrumentals on display in High Speed make me think of straigh-n-narrow Radiohead. Album closes on a bluesy Everything's Not Lost. Minor vocals, but the guitar tone feels like it would demand full stage lights for a live show -- really nice way to wrap this up. This is a very solid album. Still not entirely my cup of tea (there is something in the vocals that I can't get down with -- they are good, but feel lazy in a sort of way that I understand but cannot articulate), but credit where it is due. Some really stellar hits here and the stuff off of the beaten track is rewarding as well. Mid-high 4.
Some really cool guitar effects in the first few songs. Yellow is definitely a banger. Rest of the album sounds pretty generic brit-pop, indie. Nothing special but still really nice to listen to. Low 4
Never been the biggest Coldplay fan, but I can get into their early stuff. Really enjoy this and their next album a lot even if this one starts to mesh together at certain points. Just pleasant music just not a lot of depth to it and not something I seek out on the daily.
Coldplay just really doesn't miss. Really enjoyed the first 4 songs, lost me for a bit during Yellow. Trouble was beautiful, loved the piano. Parachute was a little jarring... you would never listen to a song like that outside of the album. Makes me curious about the difference between creating an incredible album and a one hit wonder. Seems like you have more creative freedom with an album. I thought we'd be let down easy after We Never Change and got rocked by the best instrumentals of the album in Everything's Not Lost.
Chris Martin is a bell end, a proper bell end. If you can transport yourself back to 2000 when we hadn't fully uncovered this fact then this is a very good record and that's what my score reflects, that was hard to do, even Bono (king cunt) thinks Chris Martin is a cunt.
Ok hear me out. I dislike Coldplay - but every time one of their records came out- while they do contain chunks of mediocrity - when they’re brilliant they’re pop geniuses. This album isn’t exactly that - it’s quite a delicate subtle album with hints of pop brilliance - some songs that don’t even make it to 2 minutes - it’s intimate it’s wintery and it’s just a good band writing an honest album. That they become as big or even bigger than U2 is a different story - if they seem to have the charisma of a plank is another but this record is a very good one.
Oh fuck yes, GOOD Coldplay. Yes, I'm one of those people, I don't like the direction they took musically after 2007ish; it's just not for me. I love this era, and this album has many of my all-around favorite songs. I'd say the rest of the album is too mopey for me though. Highlights: shiver, yellow, everything is not lost
ignoring the stigma of coldplay this is undeniably good
Alternative Rock, which reminds me of my first close relationship as this album was offen playing in the background. Still makes me sad hearing it today.
It's almost hard to imagine after all those not so interesting albums that the debut Coldplay album is a good one. Songs with great melodies sounding a bit like early Radiohead ("The Bends"). Too bad they never reached this level again.
2024-05-08...
I really liked this when it came out, and I still really like this. Hard to describe it while avoiding 'radiohead-lite' type of comparison but I don't think that's fair assessment.
When this album first came out I wasn't a fan, but I've grown to really like it.
Another album I have not heard from certainly one of the most popular bands of recent times. This was their first album and it has an indie feel to it, with smooth melodies and obscure lyrics. Still, a pleasant and worthwhile listen.
A really good album. I have warm memories of cozying up with others listening to this album. All the haters just need a hug.
An unbelievable debut album. This album has so many good songs. Coldplay has some absolutely timeless jams. The songwriting is unreal. Some tearjerkers.
okay
A very enjoyable listen. Shiver is a great track 4/5
Was a great album when I first heard it 20 years ago. It has aged well.
Bunch of self-righteous pricks who hate on Coldplay because it’s cool to do. Honestly the opposite of what you think this project would bring out in people. Coldplay may have altered their sound exceptionally in the albums to come after this, but that does not change the fact that this was a breakthrough in indie pop-rock. The vocals are exceptional and the guitar melodies are fantastic. It can slow down into the most beautiful music ever and people shit on it? This is their peak! They had to change after. How can you follow this up? Bunch of phonies.
Havn't really paid much attention to Coldplay in the past, so this album was good for me to get acquainted with them. Thought their voices were OK, their lyrics OK, but the synthesis of the music, lyrics, and voices exceeded my expectations. Will be paying more attention going forward. 4/5
Nostalgic 2000s rock/pop
I really enjoyed this one!
This is a great debut but is it one of a thousand albums you have to listen to before you die? Well, compared to some of the other crap in this list I suppose so. Clearly having learned from Radiohead, Martin and Co could see the aforementioned had moved on from 'The bends' and there was a gap in the market to be filled. Boy did they fill it. As soon as the guitar drifts in with 'Don't Panic' you feel assured in what you are going to get - well structured songs, atmosphere and a foundation on which to take over the world. Oh, and a massive hit - Yellow - which is, by a country mile, the worst song on this excellent collection.
Coldplay gets far more hate than they deserve. I mean sure, they are not my go to and I am as tired as anybody of hearing the overplayed hits. But there are a lot of really good deep cuts in their discography that deserve love. Good instrumentation throughout and fairly lyrically intriguing. Great album!
Such a good album
The iconic coldplay sound. I knew 'Yellow,' but I hadn't listened to the rest of the album. This album brings be back to elementary school. Going back to this music now feels so comforting.
Me encanta este disco!!! Aunque me parece mucho mejor Viva la Vida. Pero este es un clásico de Coldplay.
The question ever always thinks about is. If you had a Time Machine, would you go back and kill Chris Martin. Everyone’s answer is yes. But at which point in time? I’d say just after this album was released. If Coldplay had decided this was it, I think this would have been considered one of the great albums of all time and coupled with the assassination - their fame would be set in stone. Unfortunately I don’t have a Time Machine and even more unfortunate is that Coldplay continued and continue to make music. Music that’s getting considerably worse by the day and has created an entire fan base of pure idiots. They lose points for this. They also lose points for blatantly ripping off Jeff Buckley in track 2 - it’s so Jeff Buckley I had to check my Spotify wasn’t on the blink. 3.8
Good atmospheric pop songs. Stand-out: Trouble
fire album, I love Chris Martin. Enough said.
I love early Coldplay and I'll never apologize for it
Anyone who thinks Coldplay is bad should not be trusted
I am a Coldplay Stan. This is not their best. Kind of a slow burn this album.
Decent easy listening. Couple of good songs, but I think they have better albums
Hit after hit. "Don't Panic" specifically is a song I still play once in a while, it's so beautiful. Great album.
It’s a good collection of songs but it’s not quite at the level I remember it being so between a 3 and 4
It’s good fight me
A nice debut with a strong start
I like Coldplay. I think they get some grief because they are popular, and it's not hip to like the same music as the masses. So what? Elvis, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Prince were popular too. Even though I like Coldplay, I had never listened to this album and went in expecting it to be yet another "7 out of 10" album, of which there are so many. In particular, I was expecting to be slightly annoyed at how whiny "Yellow" is. But I enjoyed "Yellow" and the entire album more than I expected. 4 stars.
Ditto review. I was a hater for no reason.
I used to hate on Coldplay for no reason. This album is great. Chris has such a distinct, calming voice, and all these tracks are easy to get into.
All very earnest and sincere, hoping your girlfriend will allow you a glimpse of titty
I'm not sure if this album just fit the mood of this rainy morning, but this album is great. I really enjoyed it.
Really good. Before they were creatively spent, had the world at their feet an to be fair also followed it with a good album. It's a shame to see where they are at now but music and people change. Nearly a 5.
Their best
I will admit. I rolled my eyes when this popped up. And I will lead with the end… it kind of fizzled. But holy cow, the first half of this record brought me back to an incredibly specific time and place in my life when they’d just hit it big and they were *everywhere*. Didn’t hate listening to it.
Better than anticipated
Man people hate Coldplay. Honestly it's pretty funny cause y'all hating for hatings sake. Stay mad, this album is dope. Their new stuff isn't for me but the older stuff is so pleasant and vibey. Fav songs: - Shiver - Sparks - Yellow - Trouble - We Never Change
Almost a no skipper, plenty bops I forgot how good Shiver was as a tune. Coldplay get shit on but their early albums are v good
Turns out I kinda like Coldplay.
Pretty good but really too mellow for my tastes.
This album is packed with good mid-tempo songs. A really strong effort
Love Coldplay. For me, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends is my favourite album of theirs.
(5,5/6)
I love it, even his falsetto isn't too annoying. It is all listenable. You can make out the lyrics. It is melodic and a pleasant listen. I remember being in a bar on the Lower East Side and there was a note on the jukebox that said if you played Yellow the bartender would throw you out.
Solid album, great sounds, relaxing and peaceful
I can't stand CPs new stuff but I do like some of their older work, like this one.
Another one which I got sick of due to overexposure at the time, but on re-listen, it's excellent.
This is what Radiohead would have turned into if they hadn’t leaned so hard into the electronic side after The Bends. Still good, but I just don’t see myself returning to this album very often anymore and I’m okay with that.
Back when coldplay wasnt so popish
Со второго прослушивания понравилось больше, чем с первого. Под меланхоличный вайб неплохо
