Reviews (page 9 of 15)

Really enjoyed the album. Was surprised to see Changes on there/had no clue it was them. Very pleased to see a well-known band like Black Sabbath deliver on an album that isn’t considered their best or most well known. Felt very content/satisfied listening to the album.

I’m pretty sure this is the first Black Sabbath album I’ve listened to from beginning to end. I can firmly say I’ve enjoyed this listen through and the album simply rocks. The instrumentals hit hard with great solos, and the two slower songs don’t feel like a drag. Snowblind is a journey and I loved every second. Will listen to this one again next time I’m jonesing for some classic rock.

Wow I can’t believe Black Sabbath did a cover of the big mouth theme song

Would like to see phish cover this album

not their best one....

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would!

Wasnt blown away by the album, but it is Black Sabbath. A bad song of theirs is still good.

Nice! Felt like we needed something strong and harder hitting after a few days of mediocrity. As per, I well enjoyed this. Bluesy goodness.

A bunch of my Metalhead friends said that they're going to kick my ass after I admitted that I did not know that the theme song to the TV show Big Mouth was a Black Sabbath cover until I was prompted to listen to this entire album for the first time today

Great album. Never really listened to Sabbath but I probably should listen to more of that 70s stuff.

Black Sabbath Vol 4 isn't my favourite Sabbath, not by a long shot, but any Sabbath is still better than most other music. It's heavy, driving metal with plenty of unique quirks that lift it beyond what a lot of other bands were doing in the same space in the 70s, and Ozzy's voice is unique and among the very best of the genre as always. Letdown is Changes, I've never liked the song, the reprisal he did with Kelly years later was fucking atrocious, the original simply bad and out of place on this album. Also, what the fuck is FX? Just a waste of two minutes. It gets a low 4 because everything else is top outside of those two tracks; Supernaut is outstanding, so is Under the Sun.

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would!

Grew up on Ozzy/Sabbath. Easy to add this one to the rotation.

Forgot all about Changes (Track3) Slow emotional Ozzy is great!

Pretty good, Changes is the standout track for me

As of writing this, this is 2nd Black Sabbath album I've listened to (my first being Paranoid not too long ago). Honestly a pretty solid listen, even if it doesn't reach the highs of that release. Kind of surprised to find some more lowkey moments with tracks like Changes and Laguna Sunrise. Killer opening track for sure.

Surprising first listen for me. I love their first 3 but never found this one growing up, although I’ve heard changes and snowbound previously. It’s a good record and probably falls right at the tail end of the golden era (also below the first 2 Dio records). (3.5/5)

Not their greatest album

I thought this was overall more enjoyable that thief debut album, even if this didn't have as many well known hits. This was much less doom-y to me and I liked the piano incorporated into some of the tracks. This is one I'll probably have to play through a few more times. 4/5

Not usually a metal fan but this album rocks. Every guitar riff and solo is riveting, and the heavy drums and bass make up such a hard-hitting sound.

Vintage metal at its finest. It is cool to listen to the very beginnings of a genre, and the innovative riffs and rhythms that helped establish future musical projects.

Still a banger

4 Vocals as strong as the instruments, both go hand n hand together whilst being able to have their own moments within the songs

Really enjoyed!

Before I had actually heard them, I used to think Black Sabbath was the scariest, heaviest metal band of all-time. And don't get me wrong, they are heavy, but I wish the young version of me had just listened to it -- this is melodic as all hell! The riffs here are about as catchy as any other great classic rock band, and for a band as drugged out as Black Sabbath, they sound powerfully focused on their records. It amazes me how easily they can veer from some of the most rip-roaring guitar licks you've ever heard to a gorgeous ballad like "Changes". '71-'73 Sabbath really hits my sweet spot. Were it not for a few less notable tracks scattered throughout (particularly on side B), this would be an easy five stars. Hell, I'd give it 4.5 if I could.

Hadn't listened before, a bit heavy but enjoyed.

Odlican album

This was excellent. I should listen to more Sabbath.

A heavy, heavy, heavy album; it feels like a great, powerful weight as it bombasts along and Ozzy's vocals are excellent alongside dirty guitars and an insistent, urgent rhythm section. Unlike future iterations of the genre, the production enhances rather than overpowers the songs whilst maintaining a mood. The ballad Changes is a gear shift - one of a few moments on the record for the listener to breath - and is surprisingly emotional and moving. Indeed, a lot surprises to the casual listener, including how tuneful and well constructed the tracks are. Black Sabbath have been a real surprise to me on this listening journey and this is an impressive album to add to the list of records I will revisit.

This was a great listen. I had no idea Changes was written by Black Sabbath. Mind Blown. Killer album from a killer band.

The prince of darkness, the godfather of metal, Ozzy rocked so every other metal and hard rock band could live.

A bit of a stretch to call this metal in my opinion. While it's really good, I just don't think this sound really holds up to the standards of how metal is defined as a genre in its modern form. Anyway, side rant over. This is a really good album. Catchy riffs, great vocals, and lots of diversity in the sounds which makes for a very dynamic album. And while I would call this rock, I of course have to at least appreciate how Black Sabbath are the pioneering band of metal as a genre, and this along with a lot of their other earlier work was extremely influential for other later metal bands.

I liked it more than I expected considering its iconic status and a presumption that it may be overhyped. Picked up for me in the second half, and I enjoyed the musical variation.

This is probably my favourite Sabbath I’ve come across. Something about it seemed to hit the right notes.

wheels of confusion changes supernaut snowblind under the sun

change is an all time classic, 4/5 music, 9/10 rad

I've never been a huge fan of Ozzie's voice so I was skeptical of how I would like this album. To say I was pleasantly surprised would be accurate. I thought this album was good from start to finish. Changes is an absolute gem in this album. When you think of Metal, you think aggressive and loud but this album was metal without being either of those. A genuinely enjoyable album that I will be coming back to.

Changes is an all time great song.

Solid.

Pessoalmente, meu disco favorito do Sabbath. A música "Cornucopia" basicamente fundou uns 3 subgêneros do metal, sozinha.

Killer riffs and great singing by Ozzy. I also did not expect a ballad from Black Sabbath nor a sweet instrumental. However high the highs of this album are, there are a couple forgettable songs here that keep it from a 5

Heavy rock. Like it 👍some nice relaxing moments too

Really - my first listening to Black Sabbath. I am surprised and it is amazing

Okay, although I like all kinds of music, this is simply not my fave so hard to rate. Overall if this is your type, its a hit for sure.

Black Sabbath is Black Sabbath, just listen to them and enjoy.

The first three Sabbath albums displayed an evolution of their sound, making them each heavily influential. Vol 4 doesn’t tread new territory, even though it has a great set of songs. Not a Top 1,001 album in my book.

Awesome, crunchy guitar riffs with upbeat drums that set a faster rhythm. This can be heard in songs like “Under the Sun,” “Supernaut,” and “Cornucopia.” Ozzy’s vocals are clear and themes are pretty metal. “Changes” is melancholy and stars a piano and mellotron as the main instruments. I didn’t know Black Sabbath had a softer side. Skip “FX.” I don’t know what pretentious knob thought that playing the sound effects from drummed objects was a good idea, but fuck that guy. “Laguna Sunrise” is another surprise. It’s a chill instrumental song with complementary acoustic guitars, like if Black Sabbath woke up gently from an all night bender to a beautiful sunrise. Hopeful, relaxing. Cool album, had me banging my head a few times.

great album, but this is ancient history - my ancient history; looking for new soinds from today

Black Sabbath's 'Vol. 4' is an aural expedition into the depths of darkness and musical dexterity. Released in 1972, this opus diverges from their conventional heaviness, embracing a broader soundscape of eerie melodies and electrifying riffs. From the hypnotic allure of 'Snowblind' to the haunting balladry of 'Changes,' the album traverses a spectrum of sonic dimensions. Each track, a testament to the band's multifaceted musical prowess, resonates with a certain intensity, crafting an auditory tapestry that is both unsettling and enthralling. 'Vol. 4' isn't just an album; it's a dark symphony, a testament to Black Sabbath's mastery in forging a sonic path that transcends the boundaries of conventional rock.

Top tier album, but not my favourite Sabbath

An album bursting with musical technicality, atmospheric sound scapes and heavy, doom laden blues rock. Sadly lacking in some of their more obvious belters.

Interesting mix of styles on this album. definite re listen material

Excellent. More instrumental than I expected. Good listening album.

Not bad. Definitely need to be in the right mood/listening space for it. Not background music.

Classic.

Juicy pentatonic goodness courtesy of Geezer and Tony

I really enjoyed this, but found that it doesn't flow very well as an album. They quite cringe "Changes" was never going to fit in anywhere on this album to be fair. Some absolutely iconic riffs on here, not quite as good as Paranoid though obviously.

Good album, but far from their best

Though not as immediately accessible as Sabbath’s first few records, this effort finds the band willing to stretch themselves, most notably on the standout ballad “Changes.” “Supernaut” is a bruising onslaught and “Snowblind” is an immediate classic on first listen. They made better records, but in many ways the band reached their creative high water mark on “Vol. 4.” You can hear why fans love it—it’s peak Sabbath. BTW: Did they run out of energy by the time they got around to titling this one? Maybe due to the incredible run of 4 records (!) from ‘70 - ‘72.

4/5 stars Can’t go wrong with Sabbath.

While it isn't the most "Black Sabbath" of the Black Sabbath records, it's still a solid testament to their talent and influence. Vol. 4 feels like an experimental journey for the band, and as with any good experiment there are some hits and some misses. This one is a net positive for the band, but there are some background items that drag it down a bit. Favorites are Wheels of Confusion, Changes, and Snowblind.

Great album! Long time since I’ve listened to this in like 8th grade. Izzy never disappoints!

Great album. I don't think I've ever listened to it. I listened through twice and enjoyed myself both times. Tomorrow's Dream Supernaut Snowblind Under the Sun / Every Day Comes and Goes all bangers 4/5

Vol 4 over Master of Reality or Heaven and Hell? Sure why not. Always had kind of a hard time with this one, as I don’t love every song here like I do with other Sabbath LPs from the peak days. I do prefer the experimental instrumentals to “Wheels of Confusion” and “Changes”, but I can’t knock this too much, it has two all-timer GOAT Sabbath songs and the band sound as tight as ever. If I could only include 3 of their LPs, this wouldn’t be one, but I still think that the first 6 Ozzy’s and all 3 Dio’s are essential. B+

I didn’t jam out to this as much as Paranoid. The songs were generally softer and more subdued. Good instrumentation.

Really enjoyed this actually some top riffs

All time classic album

Classical rock album.

Classic

Good -but will never be fan of heavy metal

This is probably my least favorite of the “Big 6” Ozzy albums, but it’s still very good, and has “Supernaut,” which is outstanding.

Vol.4 was a pretty dang good album. The songs all had that heaviness i really like when it comes to metal. Ozzy's voice was really good and proves just how talented of a singer he is. Not every song was perfect but all and all, This album was a good listen. Best Song: Under the Sun Worst Song: FX

Excellent. This was a total mood. Love the hardcore electric guitar.

Loved getting this b2b with Sabotage. Vol.4, though only 2 years later, shows a lot of evolution and refinement from the band, both in the technical recording and sound mixing, as well as the musical approach. There's a wider variety of compositions and experimentation with guitar solos. Less uneven than Sabotage. Excellent. Favorite track: Snowblind (those solos!!!)

Slusao bi ponovno

Good, all new songs for me. I’ll definitely check it out again.

I didn't know that I was a Black Sabbath fan until today. Some really good stuff. Not quite sure if it's what I would call Metal, or just 70s Metal. It feels like it's missing something. Just not punchy enough. But really solid.

I don't know if I have ever listened to this album before, and it is much better than I expected. I've never had anything against Black Sabbath, they've always just seemed a step too slow and sludgy for my tastes, but this album is great. I can see why this is considered the 'cocaine' album. Urgent, exciting and driving, this is not what I thought I'd be listening to, and I was pleasantly surprised. Great stuff.

Cool stuff!

Snowblind is one of my all time favorite Sabbath songs. Great album.

It's just good isn't it. Haters will say it sounds muddy. They're right, but they're also just haters.

These dudes were fried out of their minds when they performed and recorded this and it absolutely shows. For instance, Bill Ward nearly got fired because he was often drunk during sessions and had trouble recording his parts on 'Cornucopia', Ozzy sounds increasingly paranoid due to the band's excessive use of coke, and unless I'm mistaken, 'FX' came into existence because Iommi recorded the sounds his guitar made when the crucifix hanging from his neck struck it. This is a wild album where I think the disfunction and murkiness only adds to the mystique, housing some of their heaviest and most creative stuff. Personally, I've always liked the guitar tone and playing on this, which I can guess Iommi worked in some weird magic during the recording process.

Love these guys. OG heavy metal.

I pretended to listen to Sabbath more than I did when I was in junior high. Why? I definitely would have liked them. This is a hell of a record.

I’ll take Paranoid over this, but still a really good record. Except for Changes. Where did that come from?

While not my favorite Sabbath album it’s still good. And this is the type of metal I like, blues based with sludgy guitars. It’s good, but it’s not quite great.

So with the exception of Paranoid this is the first album of black sabbath I’ve gone deep on. And even then, I haven’t listened to paranoid since high school. I really like the album on the whole. I thought all the guitar riffs were really great. The opening track and snowblind are stand outs, heavy riffs paired with Ozzys unique voice which then explode into the dark and melodic guitar solos/jams. My only beef with the album was all these Cool sounds got interrupted by sub par ballads/instrumentals! I wanted to keep rocking, and as a result I left the album wanting more. So in a way maybe it was a successful album, since I’m definitely going to put on some more Black Sabbath after this.

Quite enjoyed this, didn’t reach the highs of other sabbath albums but changes is a banger.

Love these thick heavy guitar riffs.

liked this way more than i realized i would

This album really has so many tremendously heavy parts. Really, really cool look at the talent of this band, especially with the feel shift in Changes. Favorite track: Snowblind

Feels dated, sounds as you expect! Some good songs though

fun, metal, and black sabbath

Pretty great, more introspective and truly melancholy than I expected from Ozzy. One of the only classic Sabbath records I haven’t spent much time with, maybe I should rectify that.

I thought I would not like this album, but I actually am a bit of a metalist, as it were. It is shocking that any and in fact ALL members of the band are still alive and functioning at any level. I enjoyed reading about the band and Ozzy is portrayed in the film The Dirt snorting a line of ants by the pool on a whim. I cannot believe how mean they were to the drummer and almost killed him by spraying him gold. Their names, too. All very unique until you get to the bullied drummer. Ozzy Osbourne, Tony no cap lommi, Geezer Butler and ….Bill Ward. Changes and Laguna Sunrise are my 2 picks for new favorites.

Way more varied of an album than you'd expect

Beste so far!

Yup its rock

Great classic album

Great. Stuff Ive somehow never heard before

Not much to say. Good album as a whole. Top 3: wheels of confusion, changes, tomorrows dream

Lots of great songs on here, manages to stay uplifting despite being metal. Lots of more beautiful quiet moments in there too.

Black Sabbath as always is just filled with absolute bangers, while the style changes drastically in the song Changes, you can still feel the same intensity from Ozzy and Tony. The main difference that I felt between this one and Paranoid is that Paranoid began with War Pigs and for me nothing else came close to that in the rest of the album, while this one started mellow and grew, giving a great performance all in all. If I could I would grade this one 4.5 stars because I liked it more than paranoid but it's not perfect for me.

Me impressiona a versatilidade deles.

God damn, these first few Sabbath records are great aren’t they. The most diverse of the first four, and while not everything quite works for me, there’s enough fantastic stuff here to make it hugely enjoyable

I had never listened to black sabbath that much before. I should listen to more.

Cool album. I like, that it plays around with feelings and genres, not getting stuck in one but always varying.

Haven't really listened to much Black Sabbath before but had a good time with this one.

IMMMM GOINNNGGGG THROUGH CHAAAANNGGEEEESSSSSSSSSS Probably the most fun I've had with a Black Sabbath record. Wheels of Confusion, Changes, Supernaut, Snowblind, all stand outs. Great Album! 4.5 stars

I guess I’ve never listened to Black Sabbath before because I was surprised to hear Ozzy Osbourne’s voice. I thought his voice was going to be deeper and the instruments go harder/more metal. So, Im just trying to imagine Ozzy Osbourne bitting bats heads off on stage to this. It just sounds too tame. “FX” was one of the best non lyrical songs I’ve heard in awhile. I don’t know if this is a hot take, but they sound a lot like Led Zeppelin. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe I’m right, the world may never know. 7/10

A 70s band that isn’t bad. FX was just Pink Floyd noise stuff. Everyone in the 70s really was tripping balls. Otherwise nothing really stood out about this album. I do tend to favor heavier rock which I felt this was. Closed with a good song “Under the Sun” I probably won’t seek out more songs from this band but also wouldn’t mind hearing more. 7/10

All that stuff about heavy metal and hard rock, I don't subscribe to any of that. It's all just music. I mean, the heavy metal from the Seventies sounds nothing like the stuff from the Eighties, and that sounds nothing like the stuff from the Nineties. Who's to say what is and isn't a certain type of music? - Ozzy Osborne Being sober on a bus is, like, totally different than being drunk on a bus. - Ozzy Osborne I used to fantasize that Paul McCartney would marry my sister. - Ozzy Osborne I'll only retire in the day I should be dead and they have me buried, and some idiot spell over my casket some stupid gospel stuff. - Ozzy Osborne You gotta be really careful what you bite off. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. It’s a dangerous world. - Ozzy Osborne I’m not a musician – I’m a ham. - Ozzy Osborne System of a down’s cover of Snowblind is better. - Ozzy Osborne 7/10

Black Sabbath has been one of the revelations of this project for me.

Great album from an interesting period in music. There’s a good mix of psychedelic influences and classic rock, and Ozzy has a good combination of angst and passion.

My kind of music. Epic jams. Saved a few songs from this one

Supernaut.

Fine example of early hard rock.

Solid album with many classics. Not sure if it's the best Sabbath album, but the songs hold up all these years later

Wheels of Confusion - 8/10 Tomorrow's Dream - 8/10 Changes - 7/10 FX - 7/10 Supernaut - 9/10 Snowblind - 8/10 Cornucopia - 8/10 Laguna Sunrise - 8/10 St. Vitus' Dance - 8/10 Under the Sun/ Every Day Comes and Goes - 9/10 TOTAL - 80/100

Some surprisingly very grown up songs on here. Changes - Awesome. The rest a spectrum of slow drone to beauty.

Solid and musically varied. Dumb, dumb lyrics

I knew this album was going to be incredible and of course it was. Just a thrilling ride from start to finish, with belters for both the intro and outro. The sudden mood change for Changes made the song that much more impactful. This was a bit of me. Favourite: Wheels of Confusion & Under The Sun Least: Cornucopia, but only because I have to choose

Expérimental Rock tranquille Quelques balades sympas

Nr. 14/1001 Wheels of Confusion 3/5 Tomorrow's Dream 4/5 Changes 5/5 FX NR Supernaut 4/5 Snowblind 4/5 Cornucopia 4/5 Laguna Sunrise 3/5 St. Vitus Dance 4/5 Under The Sun 3/5 Average: 3,78 What a great listen. I thought, aside of Led Zeppelin, I wasn't into Hard Rock/Metal. I'll have to change that now. This is so far my best rated album, taking over from Let It Bleed - Rolling Stones (3,55)

I’m going through changes

The epitome of freewheeling, magnitdutinal joy. The album has a loveable messiness that provides a great deal of character. A really exciting listen that is full of left turns and has stood the test of time, in all its coke-soaked, melt-your-face-off glory.

Early Ozzy, shockingly good!

Highlights: Wheels of Confusion, Tomorrow's Dream, Changes, Supernaut, Laguna Sunrise, Under The Sun/Every Day Comes And Goes Surprisingly varied songs for a first dive into their discography (aside from rock radio singles). I expected and got the typical heavy sludge riffs and jamming, but I never would've thought they were capable of "Changes" (no pun intended). The switchups in style are not unwelcome, but the sequencing makes for some whiplash; a different order would have made the album flow much better with less jarring tone changes.

sick, favs opening track and supernaut

I love Black sabbath but his is not their best album

Actually thought this album was good. Not typically a Black Sabbath fan because I’ve heard all their popular songs from “paranoid” played way too much.

Outside of paranoid never listened to Black Sabbath but I really liked this

fuckin awesome

Excellent album. Makes me wanna do cocaine.

Solid album. A little bit forgettable in the middle but it begins and ends strong

Changes and Snowblind I mean what songs! Amazed I haven't heard this album before

Solid entry from Black Sabbath. I am partial to their earlier releases, however this album continues the trend of hard blues rock with imaginative lyrics, kickass drumming and awesome guitar riffs. This record has more contrast than previous releases, mixing in softer tracks like Changes and Laguna Sunrise, which were both highlights for me. I love Black Sabbath, so this one gets a high score, but I took a star off since I will always gravitate towards their other albums like the self-titled and Paranoid. Fave tracks: Wheels of Confusion, Changes, Laguna Sunrise

Although Charles Bradley has the definitive version, props to Black Sabbath for writing one of the most emotionally weighty songs of all time. The rest of the album is a pretty big tonal shift from Changes, but still very good nonetheless. None of the songs here would be considered among Sabbath's biggest hits, but I really enjoyed the tone/vibe of the album. Fav Tracks: Wheels of Confusion / The Straightener, Changes, Snowblind, Under the Sun / Every Day Comes and Goes

Favorite Tracks: Wheels of Confusion / The Straightener, Tomorrow's Dream, Changes, Supernaut, Snowblind, Cornucopia, Under the Sun / Every Day Comes and Goes

Such a great record, so great to hear Changes!

While I’m more of a Priest/Uli Roth-era Scorpions guy as ‘70s metal goes, there’s no denying that this one’s a classic.

Muito bom.

Really easy listen, ended up listening twice and will probably keep coming back every once in a while. Some really good tracks, but nothing REALLY stood out to me. Except Changes, which was cool to find out that it's originally Black Sabbath and not whoever did the theme for Big Mouth.

Moninuotoisempaa sabbathia! Hienosti kulkee. Muutakin kun ränttätänttää. 4/5

Underrated but damn good album. Tomorrow's Dream is a hidden gem. Some solid sludge and doom metal here. Call it proto sludge and proto doom if you want. Sabbath were the innovators.

Avslutningen, 'Under the Sun' åstadkommer precis detta. Bästa låt: Under the Sun.

Great classic album!

Can’t really remember what this sounded like now, let’s call it a 4

Starts out really strong. "Wheels of Confusion" almost seems a little slow and rudimentary as it begins, but really gets you into the groove and by the coda at the end, is straight up kicking balls. Overall my main criticism of the album is that the music is kind of basic. The piano part on "Changes" and the guitar/music for "Tomorrow's Dream" sound almost embarrassingly basic. I don't think it really detracts from the impact of the album, but it makes me question if this is really an "essential" album outside of Black Sabbath's cultural notoriety. I liked this album despite its simplicity. It was a fun listen and had some really solid moments.

If my favorite song on a Sabbath record is a ballad, something is up. A good softer shift away from the first few albums, despite those being great. Good guitar work.

Guitars!

fuck you Changes. Supernaut and Cornucopia are metal visionary songs. Snowblind is surprisingly heartfelt. That was a good Sabbath album.

Well, you can't get much more metal than this. Very rough sounds.

flamer

Just amazing. Ozzy kills. Guitar shreds, bass thumps. But my god, lay off the cymbals for a fucking second.

I really enjoyed it !

More nuanced than I expected from Black Sabbath! Very listenable and cohesive.

While this is probably my least favourite from Sabbath’s “classic” era (1970-75), I can still appreciate how experimental this album is compared to the others from this era Favourite tracks: Wheels of Confusion, Supernaut, Cornucopia, Under The Sun

BEST SONGS: -Changes -Under the Sun

What a great metal album, opening track really sets the tone for the rest for the album

A deep wall of sound, waves of music washing over me in rhythmic patterns of vibe induced euphoria. Will come back for another bite for sure.

I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would! I think it was fun and interesting to listen to, it’s got a very unique sound. 4/5

Classic metal from the band that defined the genre.

Solid album with some great drums. There are also some good ballads that make Vol 4 outstanding on multiple levels.

Never listened to them before, that was class!

First time listening through Vol 4 I thought: a testament to why even great bands need a proper producer. It sounded murky and uneven. Full of subpar sabbath-tracks. But that might in part be the 2009 remaster. Subsequent playthroughs of the 2021 remaster considerably brightened my mood towards the album. It has some real heavy hitters like “supernaut” and “under the sun/every day comes and goes”. But also some complete duds (FX, Laguna Sunrise) and some more mid tracks. And the production really is a bit murky and uneven, but the dirty sludginess is also part of the appeal.

Ozzy as Ozzy should be. Long before the crazy, chaos, and lost wandering grandfather schtick, it's easily forgotten how great of a band Black Sabbath was. 4/5.

Good shit

This was great! 70s heavy sludge rock/metal at it's finest.

I loved this. These guys are the Nirvana of their era. They changed music. I’ll listen to this again.

A (slightly) kinder, softer Black Sabbath. Changes is actually quite lovely.

Highlight: Wheels Of Confusion/The Straightener

Czwórka dla czwórki :P

did not expect the big mouth theme song on the first day but thats just the way the cookie crumbles fav songs: supernaut, snowblind

Not the biggest fan of Ozzy and BS but this is a great selection of songs. I love the opener that just starts directly with the action. I think I like it more than their infamous debut.

Really enjoyed this one

First off, if you haven't heard the cover of "Changes" by Charles Bradley, find that and listen to it immediately. A very different and transformative cover of that piece. The original is very eerie with the mellotrons backing Ozzy. The other songs are pretty typical Black Sabbath fare hard rock / heavy metal stuff, which is fine and it works rather well. The two instrumental pieces were great. It's a big leap for them, musically and lyrically, I thought. I enjoyed it more than I expected to, compared to "Paranoid." Definitely considering picking this up. Not going to give it a 5 yet, just because I've heard it once or twice, but it's really growing on me. Not going to do coke because of it, mind you. But it's still really good.

I don't think I knew any of these songs prior to listening to this album. It's a humming piece of music - a lot of great guitar and bass work, with good drum accompaniment. Kudos to Tony Iommi for taking on production. The lyrics continue to be dark, heavy, or desolating and it works especially with Ozzy's vocals. Favorite tracks were Wheels of Confusion (slow start, but it's a droning, emotional tune), Supernaut and Snowblind (both quintessential Sabbath with their pulsing starts to the songs, which keep going), and Under the Sun (rocking end to the album, great beat). Changes is different (sad ballad, not exactly their thing and at first I thought a bit contrived but it is a nice, soft composition) and FX is a throwaway to me, but it's still a solid album.

It was quite sludgy, I liked it and would listen again, although it didn't have many of the songs I knew.... Torn between 3 and 4 stars.

Tight and heavy but more varied in styles than I'd imagine this album would be. 'Changes' and 'Laguna Sunrise' are beautiful songs too. Overall a really enjoyable album.

Great musicality with lots of space and thoughtful lyrics. Black Sabbath really paved the way for Metal of all varieties. Love learning about producer changes like this where the band does it and it changes the sound positively Not only were they pioneers, but in research, I learned they put out 4 albums in their first two and a half years: prolific

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would . I didn’t realise that changes song from big foot was a black sabbath song

I actually quite enjoyed this! My takeaway after the full listen-through was that I was positive on pretty much everything. I was jamming along and just having a good time. I think Ozzy's vocals were excellent and enjoyable to listen to, but what really stood out to me on this album was Tony Iommi's guitar. There were points, like during a section of Supernaut, where the guitar wasn't front and center and, for me, it was quite missed. A few tracks stood out to me on this one: Changes is a *very* different track here. I'm a sucker for a good piano though, and this one is definitely good. That is definitely not the only reason this song resonates with me though, as the chorus is interpolated into Eminem's Going Through Changes. Obviously after many repeated listens to that song, I have an emotional connection to those lyrics, which made this song hit a little harder. (Absolutely would recommend listening to Going Through Changes as well, but that's not the point of this review) Under the Sun is the other track that really caught my attention. I don't have much to say on that one though other than just really enjoying it. This album was not without some low points, as FX and Laguna Sunrise fell very flat for me. For FX I'm going to quote Iommi for this one: "[It's] a total joke." Funny story, not enjoyable to listen to. Though I do think it has a purpose as a segue from Changes into Supernaut. Supernaut comes in very hard and I think that would have seemed off coming immediately from Changes. As for Laguna Sunrise, I just didn't like it. Sorry, Tony. Glad you enjoyed the sunrise though. I really wasn't sure what to expect going into this, but my feelings are quite positive towards Vol. 4. Four also happens to be the score I'm giving this album.

4 Well, I think this just became my favorite Sabbath album. We’re jumping ahead a few here from our last outing with the group, and the musical evolution is heavily felt. The blues foundation and influence is almost completely gone at this point - this is heavy metal as we know it in the flesh, and it’s crazy to me how fast that transition happened (just three years since their debut!) I mentioned in my review of that album that I preferred their later sound, but at the time I was referring to songs off of Paranoid and Masters of Reality - I had no idea there was an even greater evolution from there. Holy cow this album starts strong - like to the point where I think Wheels of Confusion might be my new favorite Sabbath song, especially with that transition into The Straightener. Tomorrow’s Dream was a really solid follow-up form there… then unfortunately we hit what I would consider the low point of the album. Look, I know every hard rock band tries the tender piano ballad thing at some point in their career, but it's always incredibly hit or miss, and Changes is one that’s going to fall under the “miss” category for me. That being said, it’s apparently the most streamed song on Spotify from the album, so I guess my bad taste is just showing again. Things don’t immediately get better from there with FX, a song that gave me bad flashbacks to Throbbing Gristle - how it has more streams than the opening track kind of baffles me, but I did notice in general my favorite songs here were the ones with the lower play count. Hell, I take back my comment about bad taste, maybe mine is just superior to that of the rest of the listening world. I digress, fortunately, everything after FX is enjoyable, with Supernaut being another highlight, though a large part of that may have to with the fact that I had the privilege of hearing it performed live by Geezer Butler, Sebastian Bach, Lars Ulrich, and Foo Fighters at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert in Los Angeles. Not perfect, but this album was a pleasantly fun surprise for me. It may be a touch disorganized and sporadic, but never to a point where it feels overly jarring - it also makes sense once you learn these guys were on cocaine for its entire production. Anecdotally, I’m now 0-2 on identifying Black Sabbath album cover elements. I previously thought the figure on the band’s debut was Ozzy (it’s not, it’s a woman), and for some reason before this I thought the figure on this album was an angel (it’s not, it’s Ozzy). Don’t ask how I managed to see an angel before because I have no idea.

Found myself enjoying this more than I expected. It's definitely hard rock, but it was more melodic and engaging throughout. 4/5

Black Sabbath has that quality to their songs and albums, that is so hard to find in other bands from 70s and 80s trying to move into direction of heavier music. Honestly, I was only a casual fan of Black Sabbath, and I definitely didn't know any song from Vol. 4 album, but just first riff from the opening song was enough to tell me what a great music it is. Ozzies voice is at its best, drums and bass are doing their job, but Tonny Iommi is just magnificent. His solos, riffs, melodies, everything is top notch. I do prefer modern music, but 'll use another cliché- they don't make music like that anymore. Simply amazing job. As for the overall impression, I was enjoying this album on Side A, and slightly grew tired of it on Side B. Still, it's an exceptional work.

This is a very nuanced album that demonstrates Black Sabbath's versatility. While the are still heavy hitting hard rock and early metal tracks, there are also more restrained tracks that deal with more personal issues, addiction etc. I can also hear the seeds of doom metal here as well. Overall, I think this is a huge leap forward for the band, and it was also very listenable as well. It may not be as influential as the self-titled album or Paranoid, but the growth it shows is striking and looks forward to Ozzy Osbourne's solo career.

Full spectrum of music. Takes a journey

8/10 fun stuff! didn’t love it, but I definitely liked it

överraskade bra, skulle kunna lyssna igen!

I think I'm officially a Black Sabbath fan? Somehow they always seemed too edgy for me, but Ozzy really does sound like a priest from the underworld with how he belts with complete control. And the musicianship on this album is striking. Each instrument is on direct display at some point during the album, which is great because it shows the full skillset of the band not just the singer. I can't say it's a 5 because it didn't have that jaw on the floor effect, but it's a very high 4. I just realized, that was a lot of words when I could have just said Vol. = Rating. Oh well.

What a f#cking start to the week.

Honestly a bit surprised by seeing this one pop up, but 'Wheels of Confusion' and especially the anthem 'Changes' are great.

Solid album. I don’t know if they wanted to be the band known for the theme song of Netflix’s Big Mouth, but here we are. “I’m gooooooing through chaaaaanges.”

Not really my genre, but overall very chill album to have running in the background.

It´s not Sabbath best work, but definitily one of those metal albums that I´m always happy to come back. I admit I have to skip some songs when I revisit this, but songs like "Snowblind" or "Tomorrows Dream" will always slap. Anyway, I just love this band.

I love how Black Sabbath is able to effortlessly mix quieter songs with their rockers. Not their best, but still great.

I think I prefer Masters of Reality but this is a well crafted follow up with Iommis low tuned guitar which became influential with stoner bands of the future. Strong.

Great album! Didn't hit the heights of their first, but another classic I think. Really enjoyed Changes & Supernaut. Some vocals were a little distorted but I think that was the intention of many of the songs.

Their fourth album in a span of two years, these guys were the original Griselda. This album definitely has some of the metal that made them who they are on the debut, but there's quite a bit of exploration into other territory, including with piano and acoustic guitar. I have to say, they pull it all off pretty well. I wouldn't put this on the same level as the debut or Paranoid, but it's damn good too. Lots to love. Favorite tracks: Changes, FX, Snowblind, Cornucopia, Laguna Sunrise, Under the Sun. Album art: I take it that's Ozzy doing his thing. I do like the font and framing, it's a very simple cover but pretty effective. Certainly not as memorable as others from them, though. With the "Vol. 4" title too, it feels more like a compilation. 4.5/5

Classic rock.

Rocks pretty hard, mostly.

I liked this a lot.

I often think I should get more into sabbath and I think this is a good argument for that. I still find some songs boring blues rock territory, but the stuff that feels like proto doom etc I get into, like the closer. And how bout the mellotron on changes ?

Can appreciate

Great versatility shown here. Some harder songs, some slower ones and even a few instrumentals. Always with, for me, the perfect combination of hard riffs and singing. Lacking a few more standout songs though for a 5 Star rating

I just imagined a Black Sabbath concert and Ozzy having a sit while Iommi ripped.

Lekker album, maar niet Sabbaths beste werk.

Never heard this album and enjoyed the changes in tempo and even the instrumentals. Not as good as their first three albums, but still really good.

Another Sabbath classic

I quite enjoyed this, 'Changes' is a classic, and 'Laguna Sunrise' was lovely, quite enjoyed the rest but it's a bit Spinal Tap in places.

LOVE IT! Loved the way it transported me back to the days I never lived in but know from movies.

Great listen. Changes is one of my favorite songs ever. This album feels so perfectly amateur and professional at the same time. Such an attainable yet unique sound from this band. Great listen

Not a list of their greatest hits but a really good album, liked the flow between songs and then snowblind pops up in the middle as a great track

Good stuff

I feel like the order that I’ve gotten Black Sabbath albums on this list so far are in ascending order of quality. This is better than their first album but I highly doubt I’ll enjoy this more than paranoid when I get it. Overall this was really good and has some excellent guitar work throughout, especially at the end of the first track and on supernaut. It was also shocking to hear a cover of the big mouth theme on here and it was even more shocking to find out that this is the original. I just assumed it was a soul song first but it’s honestly much better this way. It’s also just surprising how versatile Black Sabbath is with their writing, production, and singing since they can do sad poignant stuff like changes as well as the classic heavy metal stuff they’re known for.

This was really fucking good, and surprising too. I knew that Black Sabbath could come up with some awesome riffs but a couple of very nice, mellower songs in the mix as well. This might sound strange, but some of the songs reminded me a bit of Rush. A bit more simplistic, but similar chord and song structures. Much better though, in my opinion. I like early Black Sabbath, and this is perhaps the best early Black Sabbath I've heard. 4 stars.

An unexpected range in tone from piano ballads to driving doom riffs. As someone put off by later Black Sabbath with Master Of Reality I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of vocals and all around musicianship. Not quite as innovative as earlier Black Sabbath but it's hard to reinvent the wheel.

4/5 the heavy stuff is amazing. like others i went back and listened to supernaut a few times. such a great tune! only rated this a 4 because of the lame and boring “lighter” numbers which are self-indulgent waste.

favorites: Supernaut, Snowblind, Laguna Sunrise, Under the Sun

So i did a thing where you get one album off a 1001 "albums you have to listen before you die" list thing, and this one was my first one. Immediately after I looked at the name of the band and the genre I knew it was going to be a rough start but surprisingly enough, I really really FUCKING LOVED THIS RECORD. I really need to stop having judgements about hard rock/metal because just like with master of puppets, another album I thought I wouldn't like, I always get very pleasantly surprised. This album deserves all the praise in the World just based on the lyrics alone, they are so real and such a breath of fresh air. Here what you see is what you get, no sugarcoating. LOVED the guitar riffs, LOVED the vocals, LOVED the energy of every single band member. I loved how they were not afraid to slow in down in some songs and show variety, showcasing just how great they can sound in different genres, while also maintaining the autenticity in the lyrics and their esence in their energy and performance. I'd say maybe I thought one or two songs could've been cut shorter and I did not enjoy St. Vitus' Dance as much but apart from that this is just an amazing piece of art. Like I'm actually in awe of how good this is. What this album has taught me is that I really need to stop thinking a record is not for me just because it's something I'm not accustomed to, like I do not consider myself a rock or metal fan but fck this was amazing and I will definitely be overplaying it until I get tired of it in the coming weeks. FAV TRACK: Tomorrow's Dream LEAST FAV TRACK: St. Vitus' Dance HARD8/10 Also I love the title but they were right, Snowblind would've been 10000 times better.

Pretty good, not something I’d add to playlist (not a metal/rock guy) but it’s good for a single listen

Surprisingly deep and varied, ozzy sounds huge.

Hard-driving guitar histronics courtesy of Mr. Tony Iommi.

7/10 İ liked the guitars in this album. İt was good, would listen to this type again.

it's a black sabbath album. apart from changes, which is annoyingly sappy and overly long, the rest of the album are full of bangers.

Black Sabbath, vanha kunnon. Junnaavuus viehättää aina, samoin kikkelihevilaulun esiaste. Sitten välissä biisejä kuten Changes (en tienny, että on Sabbathin alun perin?!). Pidän.

Black Sabbath was still rocking at this point, but the cocaine was kicking in.

Snowblind is the best song to do cocaine to

Very old school Heavy Metal, still rooted a bit too much in the Blues for my liking. But the riffing is strong with this one, and considering the time, it was one of the best Metal records of the era 3.5/5

Not an album I'd listened to in its entirety before, but knew several of the tracks. It's a cracker, as expected.

This is my introduction to Black Sabbath, and it's pretty good. Even though it's what I expected, the riffs are awesome. I don't have much to say but great music. Fave track(s): Cornucopia, Supernaut, Under the Sun

Yes very great. I did not know Black Sabbath could get a little experimental. I liked it!

01/04/23: Great production/musicianship, a lot of power to the guitar and drums. Ozzy's vocals are stellar. Didn't pay much attention to lyrics but apparently it's some sort of ode to cocaine. My first listen highlights are as follows: -Wheels of Confusion/The Straightener -Changes -Supernaut -Snowblind -Laguna Sunrise -Under the Sun/Every Day Comes and Goes

Surprisingly arty.

Love Black Sabbath.

Not the best Black Sabbath album at all imo, but it has some strong songs still. Saved tracks: Tomorrow's Dream, Supernaut, Snowblind, Under The Sun / Every Day Comes and Goes

First of all, Sabbath rules. There are 4 essential Sabbath tracks here (Wheels of Confusion, Tomorrow’s Dream, Supernaut, and Snowblind). These are behemoths, metallic marvels. The rest is not bad. Decent fun with some instrumental experiments thrown in. I’m really not that jazzed about Changes. Classic Ozzy track but not really Sabbath’s forte. There are more complete Sabbath records, but you can’t go wrong with this one.

Great riffs, but some of the vocal melodies would benefit some work. For me, this album is inferior to the debut, to paranoid and to master of reality.

Zróżnicowany album, czasem melancholijny.

Not bad stuff

Hey, hey.

I really liked the intro song! Wasn’t able to listen to it all! But brought me back to working on cars with my dad.

If the only downside to this album is the song “Changes”, then it really isn’t such a bad thing. Tony is still reigning Riff Engineer General, Geezer plays all the right notes and locks in with Bill Ward, who slays the drums. If there is a weak link it is Ozzy. But he is still solid and Sabbath wouldn’t be Sabbath, in this period, without him.

I recognize this album cover. I’m pretty sure MG bought this one on release. Tony’a guitar playing is quite good and the drumming is also top shelf. Hard to believe they pulled this off drunk and stoned. I like the ballad on this album too. I made a rookie mistake and rated the War Pigs album too low so will bump this one.

Their guitarist, Tony Iommi, has gone riff crazy on this one, changing it up every couple of minutes. Black Sabbath were starting to sound a little pre-fab at this point, though now that I’ve listened to Metallica, who sold a zillion times more LPs and claim that BS was a big influence, I can appreciate Tony more. The opening track’s main riff is uninspired, but the guitar work that graces the intro and last 2 minutes make up for it. “Supernaut”, Frank Zappa’s favorite apparently, and “Under the Sun” are quality enough to have been on one of their earlier releases. I'll give a thumbs down to the ballads and the echo chamber song. It's interesting that their record company forced them to change the name of this album from "Snowblind" as they did their second LP, from "War Pigs".

Not as good as paranoid but still great album with cool riffs, drum, bass and some of Ozzys better vocals

me entretuvo bastante

Surprisingly good. Liked Ozzy’s singing, really liked Changes.

Ash man loved dancing to this

Very very very good.

Supernaut is God tier Sabbath. Wheels of Confusion and Changes are good, bordering on great. The rest is good, but altogether not as satisfying a listen as Masters of Reality.

It was nice for a metal album.

From when heavy metal was cool.

Yeah, loved it...

I think I’m a Black Sabbath fan.

Found myself digging these songs more than the last Black Sabbath álbum assigned.

Yes. Just this black viscous goopy wave of cacophony scored with deep bass and vitriol. Love it.

Whatever it is about metal you like, Sabbath did it first.

Love the groove of old early metal. Solid vibes, and I love seeing the roots of the genre extend down into NWOTHM, DOOM and Stoner metal. Sabbath age well IMO.

4. Very good record, sound still sounds fresh. Standouts: Wheels of Confusion / The Straightener, Tomorrow's Dream, Supernaut, Snowblind, Under the Sun / Every Day Comes and Goes.

10/??/2022 Retrospective listen. This album is so fucking good. Honestly my favorite album that I've heard from Black Sabbath so far. Made me want to listen to even more of their stuff. Idk how they're so fucking tight and solid with their sound. Cornucopia, Changes, and Snowblind were my favorites. I had loved Under the Sun before hearing the entire album, so getting to hear it as the closing track was truly the cherry on top.

Enjoyed!

I really enjoyed that. Based on the rock music I listen to today this felt like a melting pot of genres. 4/5

Geiler 70s sound! Danke Papa 🙃

4/5 Best song: Changes

Great album

Great album that I have never listened to, I’ve only heard their hits. Solid power chord driven rock with intricate bass lines. Many of the e bands I enjoy listen to list them as an influence, so will give more of their albums a listen for sure.

This one has actually survived over time :)

This is great, very Led Zeppelin, maybe with a little less variety, but Ozzy's charisma makes up for it.

Now that's music!

It’s Ozzy man, where’s fucking Sharon!!

Riffs.

Vol. 4/5

Banger

Good record all of it
