Reviews (page 6 of 12)
4+/5
Listened to this 2 or 3 times back to back, surprised by just how much I enjoyed this rock. I'm wondering if chili peppers and the foo took any inspiration from this album because it just reminds me of lots of their stuff
It's good! Apart from that "We Will Fall" which was too downtempo for the gym
It’s good I liked side one quite a bit more than side two but it’s great throughout and not a bad song 4/5
I fuxking loath this album, it's criminally overrated as all shit
classic
Fucking amazing first two tracks. Appreciated learning about the remaster issues, all were good. Kinda like the Bowie of best
Can see where future bands got the inspo.
It sure has it, raw power that is
very good vocals all songs are very energetic and chaotic
Fascinating album. I read the background about all of the difficulties with the original mix… the David Bowie mix done in one day, off of only three or the original 24 tracks, so I was intrigued. I put on the original Bowie mix and was ASTOUNDED by what I heard. It’s so harsh it’s almost unlistenable! I’m listening on a nice system, and the only way I could stand this album was by a) going into another room, b) listening on worse speakers pointed away from me, c) turning it up so loud my hearing started to fatigue. And I expect that’s what happened to many teenagers who put this album on for the first time… it is so harshly mixed that it must have sounded like nothing anyone had ever heard. It’s those anger frequencies! The ones that you get with a crying baby, or scraping metal against metal. The ones we’re wired to get angry or upset over. It’s crazy that a badly mixed, almost unlistenable album is what inspired the seeds of the punk movement… and it’s probably in part because of the bad mix! The 1991 “Iggy’s mix” is far, far more listenable. You get a sense of fresh experimentation, antics, fun, showmanship, just rawness. The guitar solos are all still there in the remix, I don’t care what anyone says. The rawness is still there. But the thing that’s going to be imprinted on my mind is how intense and angry the first mix made me feel. A great example of “not as great as you remember.” Because what you remember is more the emotion of the event, the feelings you get, the afterimage. And that says something about the experience of music by itself. 4/5
Potentially the first punk album of all time
Very very good
good stuff, i had never heard then before
1/24- At the gym
Another guitar heavy album, but this time with real power, as the title suggests. A short journey of just eight tracks, but a high-energy, electric one nonetheless. Reminds me of one of my favourite movie soundtracks. Great songs, great rhythm, great album!
Absolutely does what it says on the tin! No one does it like Iggy. I think this will lead me to explore more of his back catalogue
Fantastic energy
Clasic
Iggy has an incredible, dry, raspy howl. A perfect complement to his degenerate content and the innovative in-your-face attack of the band. My only gripe is some bands would take the sound further without lingering slow ones.
Punk
That's very good, I'm not sure about what, but something bugs me tho. For now is a 4, might become a 5 after relistening some times
Listened to Bowie mix, Iggy mix, Rough Power, then Bowie again. Rough Power sounds better to me than the released Iggy mix and ultimately I think I prefer the Bowie mix---basically went through what Ron Asheton said about the original Bowie mix, ha! (see Wikipedia).
High energy, I liked.
Classic. Iggy Pop was cool before cool
Look out honey, 'cause I'm using technology Ain't got time to make no apology Solar radiation in the dead of night Love in the middle of a fire fight 4/5
Love the Stooges. Previously a huge fan of Fun House but hadn't given Raw Power enough of a listen. Search & Destroy is likely my favorite early punk song...such a jam. 4/5
A very apt title. Simple, direct and powerful. The birth of hardcore punk. Stick some shouty Californian vocals on it and you have a The Bronx record. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Search and Destroy Date listened: 09/12/22
Love the stooges. Not my favorite of their albums, but a solid 4
3.7
3.8 but deserving of the round up on the ranking
Face melting guitars, dripping with rage and energy, still sounds fresh 50 years later
Exactly what the title said. Definitely the sort of album I really wanted to see here, and precisely what I needed after Ella Fitzgerald. Loved how bad the production sounded, as it only added to the sense of fury throughout the record. Perfextly sequenced, even if there could've been a couple more standouts, especially considering the brief runtime, but at the end if the day, these are only minor gripes and this is a superb addition to this list. A great record.
Here it is, the one Iggy/Stooges album I've been waiting for. Is it by the Stooges? Iggy & the Stooges? Iggy Pop & the Stooges? It's a classic Larry, Curly, Moe, Shemp, Curly Joe situation. The opener is that big dog status banger; I always think of its appearance in The Life Aquatic when Zissou goes ape on the pirates to save his crew. "Gimme Danger" is a great one too. There's some heat on here for sure, and I love the rage/punk energy. Not too much that stuck out aside from those first two tracks, but still a great album. I think I've enjoyed every Iggy/Stooges project we've gotten, at least to some extent. Favorite tracks: Search and Destroy, Gimme Danger, Penetration, Shake Appeal. Album art: It's really just a portrait, and possibly a live performance photo, but the artistry and energy is pretty strong. Gotta be one of their best. 4/5
Rock n fucking roll
Bloody lovely little listen start to finish
There's a lot crammed into a very short album - this is punky, scuzzy, ugkay delicious. Gimme danger!
84/100
Oh yeah, lots to like here for this first-time listener. Energy and attitude galore from all members of the band, channelled into well structured songs. I also appreciated the alternating feel of the songs - raw proto-punk balanced with slower/more polished rock & blues-rock. Intriguing to listen to the different mixes available too (I think I prefer the more open/clear sounding Iggy mix than the boxier Bowie mix, on a quick comparison of a few tracks). Some of the songs appeal more than others, but I'll come back to this album, for sure.
Solid album. A few songs I didn’t like but most of the songs were amazing. Overall a good listen.
4.5/5
Rock and roll. what can i say.
Very good
I listen to the original David Bowie mix of this album, I tried listening to the Iggy Pop version for about two songs and I thought it was just horrendous. That being said, this album was not nearly as a fantastic as Funhouse was, but it was still pretty great and I really enjoyed the majority of it
This was almost perfect but fell off for me at the end. Classic one-two to open. What a leap from their earlier albums.
The wrong day to listen to this album. I know it bangs, I just couldn't get into it.
cuanto mas alto este el volumen mas se disfruta fav songs: Search and Destroy Raw Power I need somebody 4.0
Not many albums have the breadth of influence as Raw Power did on later rock, punk, and metal. Despite the poor production quality, the album absolutely rips. James Williamson's guitar work and Iggy Pop's vocals strike the right balance of raw energy and catchy hooks. Fun facts - Kurt Cobain listed this as his favorite album of all time, and Henry Rollins has Search & Destroy tattooed across his shoulders.
I liked this album more than I thought I would. While it was frustrating having to turn up and down the volume depending on the song, I liked Iggy Pop's vocals and Williamson's guitar work. Obviously, there were issues with the mix, as sometimes you could barely hear the lead guitar or even the drums as the distortion on the other guitar was too prominent. Overall, a solidly written and performed rock album.
Iggy ... Loud, noisy, punk .. rock.
Classic punk, lots of fuzzy guitars
Very solid
3.5/5. it's good rock, but not my preferred style
Absolute banger so far
Simply one of the most important records in rock music of any genre.
Simple Motor City Punk. Not the Stooges best work IMO. but a great listen. 3.5/5.
Energetic and laid back at the same time. Both creepy and cool or aggressive as well as therapeutic. Would not listen to it on repeat though. Espescially liked Search and Destroy and Raw Power
I actually like this. It’s like a bluesier Led Zeppelin, well one of the songs anyway. I liked it!
Pre punk funk
Yeah baby
Incredible
noiiice 4/5
Wow. I loved it. Vibes of the doors for sure. Some great songs to add to my down the rabbit hole playlist
honestly kinda fun grows on me, couple misses, but solid to listen to
This project is funny sometimes. I hadn't heard this album before yesterday and now I have strong opinions about which mix is best (it's the Bowie mix). Best track: I Need Somebody
Hard driving.
This is NOT the 3 stooges
Another album I love but that I haven't revisited in a while! Search and Destroy is the only song on this that's in my constant rotation, and for good reason. It's super fun, I love Iggy Pop's vocals on this, and it's easy to see how this influenced a lot of young punks with the guitar-work. I'm a really big fan of the riffs in the background of Gimme Danger. A good deal calmer than Search and Destroy, but still a fantastically fun song to listen to. The distortion right out of the gate on Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell scratches the itch in my brain that's been *asking* for something raw on this record. Iggy Pop's voice on this is also insane. Penetration's weird ass vocals are so fun. I also really like whatever the glittery little instrumental bit behind them is doing. A highlight of the album for sure for me so far. Honestly, Raw Power is a little tame for being the track that shares it's name with the album. I appreciate what it's trying to do, and maybe I'm too influenced by the harder stuff I listen to, but the only part that really works for me is the last minute or so of the track. I Need Somebody's guitar-work is fantastic, and I really like this track, especially compared to Raw Power for some reason! I think it strikes a balance between aspects of the album that I like really well. Again, Shake Appeal is a song I wasn't expecting to love again, but it strikes a good itch in my brain for distortion! Is it silly? God, yes, but I think it fits well with the rest of the album. Death Trip's got a lot of fun vocals, but something about it didn't really work as much for me as some other parts of the album. Maybe it was the length, everything else was pretty short, while this song clocks over 6 minutes.
pretty good, definitely agree with proto-punk assessment.
Had some unimpressive moments but also some awesome guitar parts. You have to listen to this on high volume. 7/10
I mean, it's a pretty good album. It definitely is raw power. A lot of good rocking songs. Very much an old school punk feeling. Nice raw vocals with some gut screams. Seems to be a great driving record.
Punky and dirty, lots of fun to listen to
More enjoyable than expected (from simply looking at the genre), esp. there's some jazz bit!
Cool punk rock. Search and destroy. Gimme danger.
Good dog.
The list is on a roll for once, it's been one 4 or 5 star classic after another this week.
Great sound, everything turned up to 11
big stooges fan. listened to the first season of "No Dogs in Space" which is a music podcast and their first season is about punk and their first series is a three parter on the stooges. Which obviously adds to one's appreciation of music. Search and Destroy is my favorite song here. But proto-punk is known for being relatively simple/DIY-esque and that's a big part of its appeal. So, even though this is the stooges third album, I wouldn't say they've really broken the mold with any of these songs, or done anything crazy impressive or made songs that are intricate/complex/deep. They've harnessed an attitude, distilled it into something sonic, and disseminated it. And it clicks with people (like me) because you can feel something there. Also, James Newell Osterberg jr (aka Iggy Pop) was really the first one to do this sort of thing and his influence in this scene is legendary for good reason.
Baow baow baow
This was a jaunty good time
Very interesting, a clear influence on loads of bands I love. Some tracks sound like a heavier version of The Doors, other like the Sex Pistols with wierder lyrics. Overall, great, but not quite 5 🌟 for me.
Very loud Search and Destroy is very punk and I can see why this album is so influential Gimme Danger is my favorite song on the album
It was ok. But I wouldn't listen it with my free joice
Some awesome riffs and great vocals. Was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. I saw Iggy play at a festival in Spain in 2006 and I had partaken in a lively pint drinking atmosphere that day so sadly can't remember too much other than it was pretty cool so I'm not sure why I've taken so long to go and have a listen. Solid 4 stars.
Iggy, what a guy
I'm pleasantly surprised. I would describe it as something between Metalica and The Doors with a touch of punk.
Great album, enjoyed it even more as it was directly off the back of Funkadelic!
Great proto punk album
Short sharp high energy punchy insolence.
Raw Power is definitely underselling it, this album blows the doors off. The Stooges are full on here, and it's joyous to listen to.
Powerful
Ja gilla det!!
*The* proto-punk album. Pretty awesome
Rat power
It was ok, not a favorite
i feel like i've cheated with this album. on the youtubes there is a version called the 'Bowie mix' where the mix has been cleaned up and it is so much nicer to listen to than the original version i've got on cd. gonna rate it from this nice mix. yeah i know this version isn't quite as RAW or POWERFUL but what you gonna do? if you didn't enjoy the original i highly recommend this remaster.
My second ever circle jerk was just before my 10th birthday. Again it was with the entire Chelsea first team and backroom staff. This time we went to the woods. The coach journey was wild and bristling with anticipation. Some couldn't wait and simply had a wank on the coach, much to everyone's enjoyment. The rest of us knew it'd be worth the wait and held on. I was wearing a mini skirt and feather boa and had my hair in a ponytail, as was the fashion at the time. I couldn't wait. It was over in minutes. Such was the attraction between us all as a group, we all shot our loads in no time. A glorious, triumphant climax fom the entire Chelsea first team and backroom staff all over my face and chest. Glenn Hoddle came on my back. Later, we went out for lemonade and I managed to spill some on myself. I couldn't tell what was lemonade and what was the entire Chelsea first team and backroom staff's jizz. I was soaked right through.
Just right amount of punk. Kind of got repetitive in the middle but ended with a bang.
Picking up the mantle from bands like the stones and the velvet underground, the Stooges had a decadent seedy sound and unrepentant energy, and this album is no exception. Sounding like countless be garage bands from the sixties, the album title neatly sums up what's on offer. The guitar work is spectacular throughout.
Classic US punk. Highly enjoyable
Fizzing with energy and fun, would've been great to see them live
Grrrrr. Yeah.
Cow bell? hehe. Tipa u Penetration. Ne znam. But nice touch indeed. Nije dugačak album, baš onako koliko treba trajati za ovakav žanr. Revolucionaran?
Good 33 minute album. Wish i could find the original one on spotify instead of the two mixed versions. Listen to the Iggy Pop version and not the Bowie Mix since did not know the difference. Solid 8/10 for a genre didn't listen to initially.
Proto Punk. Garage Rock. Fuck whatever it gets tagged as. Let’s call it energy. Williamson’s guitar. Let’s not get into the mix debate (I listened to the Iggy mix). It’s nasty abrasive shit and I love it.
Strange how this is considered "heavy" compared to the modern evolution of punk and, especially, metal. The Scandi fellas dressed all in blank & wearing orge masks whilst screaming into the mic might have thoughts on the subject. That said, there is definitely a grittiness to it, and you can hear the STRUT of Iggy blasting out the speakers.
Enjoyed it, raw & grungy
First time listening to this album that I can recall, and, wow, is it ever good. Truly. As I cycled through the tracks, I was glad I was aware of the fact that this album was recorded in '72 and released in '73, because as my listening mind kept recognizing the countless bands who sound like various elements of this album, I realize they are all bands who recorded much later, sometimes decades later. When I read about how influential this album is considered to be, I darn well believe it. Musically, there's so much to love here. Holy Schneikies, the guitarist, James Williamson, who also co-wrote a bunch of these songs, is AMAZING. Plus, what an interesting career in tech that followed. Read the Wikipedia entry on him if you're interested. Great album. So innovative, energetic, and engaging.
eh ganz geil
Obergeil. Rotzig, punkig, mega Gesang! Macht weiter so ;)
Great album! Reminds me of my dad, some proper classic rock songs that i loved and will listen to again. Does show its age i feel but still a great listen.
Great!
Had fun listening to this album and the two different mixes. I thought the original Bowie mix was the better version
Clasic
"Raw Power" is aptly named. I could not turn away from this while listening. I am anything but ambivalent when it comes to this type of music. Fortunately, this was a good one.
“It’s up there as far as punk goes, but it’s still just punk. I dunno” -IH
Grondleggers van de punk 🤟
I don’t know much about Iggy Pop. From what I had seen, I’ve always thought he was a stooge. Based on what? I don’t know really. The fact that he often has his shirt off while performing I guess? After hearing this album and reading up on Iggy, I have a new found respect for his career. The sheer volume of other artists citing this album, Iggy, and The Stooges as major influences is impressive. The album was originally mixed by David Bowie, who didn’t have a lot to work with. In what appears to go against many opinions, I much prefer Iggy’s 1997 remix of the album. Bowie’s mix is too clean and the volume fluctuations (e.g., Search and Destroy) are utterly distracting. Iggy’s remix is louder, more distorted, and at least one star’s worth more enjoyable. They say this album is the genesis of punk or something like that, and I can understand that. The album is also referred to as proto-punk, which is a genre I lazily wondered (see The Saints’ Eternally Yours) if I had invented. Yes the term proto-punk was already a thing. Here it is again, describing another album that I am pleasantly surprised I like.
Look, I would give this album five stars purely for the line "Look out honey cos I'm using technology". I would even give it that if it was only that line, repeated for 34 minutes. Everything else is a bonus. Aside from that killer line, it's raw and it's powerful. The album is a clear path from the 1950s to the 1960s and then kicking and screaming into the punk era and beyond. I mean, this still sounded fresh back in the 90s. A classic.
8/10
Great punk classic, great for relistening
Never listened to it while performing office work before. Still good.
I love the Stooges, but this album is let down a little by the production. Great songs, but I prefer Fun House
Better than expectations.
Raw and gritty. Great early punk album.
Great album. Iggy is a legend
A very good album. It really is 'raw power'. I guess that's where they got the name from.
Go Iggy Go!
Solid rock n roll album
Fuck yeah! Listened to this album lots before, but this time it was EXACTLY what I needed. Most perfect album title for the sonic punch that lurks within.
Very good.
Great proto punk album! More like a 4.5
It definitely sounds like "raw power" Extremely loud, noisy, you can easily feel every single sound. The vocals like very raspy, kind of demonic? animalistic is probably the word that I'm looking for. Very noticeable on penetration. Not the biggest fan of I need somebody. I'd give it a 4.5/5
Wild stuff, I got to be in the right mood. Paved the way for Queens of the stone Age. Iggy's mix leaves no room in the mid range, real warm sound, kind of sounds like my speakers are on fire.
Great, will return
4
A really good pre punk album but I like more the Soloist Iggy
As the title suggests, this albums I pumped to the brim with energy and noise. Very fun and exciting power that comes from these tracks and manages to make some pretty catchy tunes. Definitely one of the best examples of hard rock/ punk music.
Great listen - hard, fast, and raw but still dynamic. "Search and Destroy" is easily the class of the album and it is unfortunate that more of the album can't keep up by comparison. The music and energy/vibe are a 5 but the lyrics become repetitive and even plodding at times. I did also enjoy the bluesy feel of "I Need Somebody." Definitely worth repeat rotations though.
A pretty easy 4 to me. Still sounds fantastic today. I'm a little overdone on Search and Destroy but was happy that didn't seem to bring down my listen of the whole album.
idk why i just felt like a 4
Pretty good, got a bit too much like Rolling Stones by the end, but will listen again
The world needs more angry music
I’d never listened to Iggy Pop before, I really liked it. Great guitarist.
Somebody gotta save my soul
Classic slice of garage-leaning rock energy. I love the sound, and I quite enjoy the sense of frustrated angst in the lyrics - though Iggy does bring a lot of that "baby baby baby ugh ugh gimmee some lovin" vibe, which I find one of the most laughable things about rock music. Tempted to say 3.5, but then I do fully agree that everyone should give this a spin, so I guess it's a 4!
Iggy Pop class. Probably a 4, defo a high 3. Search and Destroy is a classic.
Buen sonido anyways
A more appropriate album could hardly have been chosen. It feels like a force of nature caught on tape.
Short influential album
Iggy Pop and the fucking Stooges
Never really listened to The Stooges. This album rules.
I'm quite annoyed it's taken this endeavour for me to realise how much I like Iggy Pop/Stooges. This stuff fucking kicks ass. I've wasted so many years, this music could have been with me my whole life. It's raw, punky, simple, energetic, and it rocks.
I wish I could listen to more than one album a day! This is clearly a fantastic album.
Really good and really raw. The actual version at least, the iggy remix in 96 is stupid. Apparently a marmite album too.
This was tickling the bum of 4*. I like the style, the guitars, the singing. Works well for me. Actually, screw it. I am giving it 4 stars.
Liked this far more than expected. Always wanted to dive into a little Iggy Pop and this did not disappoint. I’d actually give this a listen again sometime soon.
Forgot how heavy this sounded
4.5 + Comes on ferocious with blown out guitars and vocals that fling you in front of a stack of beaten up amps, thrashing around at some dank LA juke. This record captures the manic energy and the menacing immediacy of what I imagine Iggy Pop's live performance must've been like.
Proto punk album per excellence. Raw power indeed!
Mis canciones fav "Search and Destroy", "Penetration" y "Death Trip". 8.5/10
I'm a street walking cheetah with a heart full of napalm
The mix was a bit rough, but I guess it fits the style.
rolling stones meets punk
I didnt really care for Iggy Pop until i listenes to this. Its a cool mix of punk and blues that is unexpected. Iggy is so sleazy in a fun way. I liked almost every song and the band was fantastic.
Iggy can scream!!!
Scream iggy scream
Great cross of David Bowie and early punk
Fun stuff!
True grit
Pretty adequately named album. Love the energy
Iggy and mixing seems to be a recurring theme. The full listen was the Iggy mix, and I went back afterwards to hear a bit of the original Bowie mixing. Gotta say I prefer the latter, at least from the few seconds of audio I listened to. Perhaps it's placebo, but the slicker production reads as definitely associated with Bowie. So I suppose the rawer mix is more punk, but something about the distortion combined with the arrangements grated a bit. Anyway, uneducated rambling aside, fun listen. Likely deserves a 4, but initial impressions win out.
Fucking killer
A bit raw for me, but saved a few songs and clearly was a burner back in the day
I liked this more than I thought I would - it has a fun proto punk energy. But will I ever listen to it again? Doubtful.
Ok, so it's punk, so my baseline starts at 3. The curse of being pioneers is that I hear so much that i dig in the descendents (no pun intended) of The Stooges, yet I don't find any of their songs really grab me. So no 5. A 4? I hate to admit it, but this may remain at a 3. Where do I have to mail my punk card?
Say what you want about Iggy Pop the fact is this isn't a terrible record. Overall, I think it's a decent album not really my vibe but it's a decent album. One of things I think is happening is that this list is kind of a weird mix between legendary albums, and albums that you may have skipped over because they are inferior to the artist best work. Like for example this is not Iggy Pops nor The Stooges best.. the problem is is that I don't know if the list includes their best compared to... we shall see
Much better than I was expecting, but my expectations were pretty low so that's not a huge endorsement.
This sure is a rock album. Not much to hate about it, but also not a lot to like I suppose. I see how this was influential. It felt a little repetitive to me though. Will this be my first 2 star review? It feels like another 3 star, but I really could not currently tell you one song that stood out. Thank you!
Raw for sure. Ok but not good to great. Definitely some of the earliest punk rock s d super influential on later acts like the Ramones.
The production is ROUGH on most of the songs but I still enjoyed enough of it for a 3.
is this guy ok? fun guitar and weird vocals. favourite song: shake appeal
Raw Power lasts because it sounds like a blueprint for punk and hard rock written in acid and broken glass.
Not bad although the songs did merge together after a few songs. I couldn't find the original version of this album so I decided to listen to disc 1 and then skimmed through disk 2 as I didn't need to hear the songs again (albeit as different mixes).
I get why this is so beloved but something about it just doesn't quite click for me
I accept how important Raw Power has been in the development and progression of popular music. But it's not one that I listen to. A step on the way rather than a fully realised and finished article, in my view.
Album 244. Raw Power (https://open.spotify.com/album/6mxbG8KrOTZIxlP4gzaliM?si=sa4ZoHQPSCmkleqR-D7i4w) (Iggy Mix) — The Stooges (1973) Short, raw, good rock album. There's an original Bowie Mix version (https://open.spotify.com/album/6wLn5qXBJgZfAbM0bt5vov?si=vhi5tliLRYq1dPT2gjwDaw) and it's great too. It's the Iggy Mix version and the most noticeable thing is it's louder. I can't choose which one is better. 3/5 Liked: — Gimme Danger — I Need Somebody
Raw power Raw punk Not great technically but very very real punk from the begining. Great album
Good
- opening is FIREE my typa album - your pretty face is going to hell gave me the ick.. - the sound effects on penetration also gave me the ick.. - i do appreciate the instrumentals (but not anything super special) - ehh i didn't like it that much, felt like a lot of other 70s rock albums
Kinda noisy, but liked the vibe. Got halfway thru and songs started sounding kinda similar but would finish. Like the detroit rock vibe
Now Iggy Pop is a legend. However I can't see it on the back of this record. Pretty unremarkable to me and according to Wikipedia this influenced the development of Punk. I guess you had to be there. I like the energy and rawness but lyrically and musically not so much. No 3's so 2 from me.
Look it's just fine rock and roll Fave track: Search and Destroy
Scuzzy. 2.5/5
3.7/5
Undoubtedly influential to so much of the punk music that I do enjoy, however Iggy Pop's vocals have just never appealed to me. Points for influence but I'll likely never return.
Could not get into it...read how they only had 12 hours to mix it and I genuinely feel like that's my stumbling block...the mixing. I say this as someone who has never mixed music before lol. It does sound a tiny bit muddled but I'm sure it'll age like wine in my library.
I enjoyed this album a lot more than I thought I would! Familiar with Iggy Pop (and The Stooges) by name and for their influence and collaboration with other artists I admire (Bowie again), I welcomed this opportunity to explore more.
I really like the, well, rawness. I could def see myself getting more into this
I see the ground being broken but it's not for me. Decent! Strong 6
Tu nununun
Some gay British child prayed for their Barbie doll to come to life and the monkeys paw curled
A bit disappointed? Like, it's rock, punk rock, but I am not vibing with it ? The instrumentals are very good but I am not much on the vocals. - I need somebody Bruh, guy keep talking about his ass in lives. I'll definitely prefer the studio ones. Tbh, none have wowed me ? Sad.
Vocals are a bit exhausting, not quite my style. But I liked Seek and Destroy.
Great but didn’t capture me.
Great
Some songs are hard to listen to, but other's aren't bad
More like The Snoozes, you know what I'm saying? Whatever, it's fine, I'm sure it was great when it came out. It wasn't offensively bad, but I'll never willingly listen to it again.
Anything Iggy does will always have a soft spot for me. The fact that The Stooges were influenced by The Doors and then went onto influence so many other bands I also love confirms their place in shaping and evolving the beautiful big genre of rock n roll, and punk rock specifically. The perfect album cruising down a highway with the windows down feeling the breeze. Also works to bring your energy up no matter the mood. At times it gives off strong desert rock, but then blends with Californian swing, to then more psychedelic, Jimmy Hendrix style guitar. Immaculate guitars to accompany Iggy’s vocals, which come from the same genus as Lou Reed and ol’ Mick.
Im stooooginnnnggg I didn’t enjoy myself here. Just not really a fan of Iggy’s vocal thing he has going on here. Maybe it’s just a case of it just hitting me in the wrong time and place who knows. There are like 3 different versions of this album, I listened to the Bowie 2023 remaster. Feel a little hypocritical disliking this when I really enjoyed Lou Reed’s weirdo vocals. update: Just listened to Gimme Danger, which is a song I've liked in the past. Didnt realize it was on this album. I really liked it! But this was the Iggy mix??? So I don't know if it's because of the mix or that I've had more exposure. Maybe this album will grow on me in the future, but for now i need to keep moving.
Good
This reminded me how obsessed I was with Dark Shadows (2012) A three point something
I like Iggy, makes me feel like I'm listening to early 70's Bowie. I do agree with other listeners that this dude is way too overrepresented on this list at the expense of a more diverse experience.
I think this is another album that has fallen foul of the too-many-albums-by-the-same-musicians frustration of mine. We've had 4/5 from Iggy, or Iggy and the Stooges, or the Stooges. And I get it, they're pretty good, but not 5 albums good.
solid album
I'm not feeling this. It's culturally significant, but not my style.
Not much of a review here. I liked this, but I’m a little surprised I didn’t like it more.
Never liked Iggy
Gimmie Danger, Search and Destroy
Light years ahead of its time. Can absolutely see why this is on the list and why so many rate it. Doesn’t mean I enjoyed it though! Ultimately not my thing. 3
Search and Destroy is a great song! The rest of the album doesn't quite live up to that one, but is still decent.
Decent but I wish it had I Wanna Be Your Dog
Pretty fun
Na
Well titled album with vocals that sound like Strummer and Jagger. Big influence on punk.
Favorite songs: Search and Destroy, Gimme Danger, Penetration, I Need Somebody
Okay I'm so confused by all the different versions of songs they have bc wdym there's a Bowie, Iggy, or live version. This album is soo weird lol. I do like a few songs though- 3/5
To begin with, I was confused in whether to listen to the Iggy mix or the Bowie mix. Listened to both and the Iggy mix was compressed to hell and distorted so badly, but added to its charm. The Bowie mix sounded really tinny and thin but was a lot clearer and crisp. I carried on with the Iggy mix. Overall it sounded generic glam rock and wasn't that engaged with it but it wasn't a hard listen. 3/5
Listened to The Stooges' Fun House a few months ago. Raw Power by contrast has more calculated rock songs than the jam-based ones in their previous album. Their raw-sounding guitars, provocative lyrics, and Iggy's stage persona probably helped form the modern, rebellious rockstar archetype. Not much really captivated me here, since I know how the ingredients in this album were all mixed together by other artists to create the punk "cake" I'm familiar with. Raw Power is more of a historical artifact I can listen to once and appreciate how it helped shaped a new sound in the years to come.
Raw power is of its time with a slick guitar peppering every song and a pop-rock sound throughout. I didn't particularly feel moved by any song so it's difficult for me to give it a good rating as it overall sounded pretty generic. Fav song: I Need Somebody Least Fav: Penetration
When I first heard this album, I was 16 and really high on meth, and this thing hit so damn good. Gotta be one of the best drugs to listen to this album to, though I can't honestly recommend doing meth (plus this was the 90s when meth was safe). I have to admit that I find the notorious production on this a bit grating. It's so thin and tinny. And the tracklisting here isn't my fave Stooges. There's a stronger rock 'n roll feel on here, which is fine and fits in with other stuff at the time like Ziggy Stardust. I don't really ever put this on (same with Ziggy Stardust honestly). Gimme Danger is one of the greatest songs ever made.
Interesting production crew - I know the story of the Bruce Dickinson (more cowbell) but David Bowie was a mixing engineer? Very interesting. Yeah this is pretty cool and yes very raw. Lot of attitude for 73.
Not bad but won’t go out of my way to listen to. I liked the Bowie mix better.
Ok
I actually enjoyed this way more than I expected. Thought this was going to be a hard listen but it was overall very nice and I quite liked it. I'm still going to give this a mid 3. this is not quite my genre but I am pleased with this vinil want: No
This whole thing about multiple, competing mixes of this album is very weird. I'm just sticking with the Iggy mix. They both have their problems. Oh! There's a celesta in this garage. Yep, I can see that this guitar sound influenced every punk guitar that came next.
If I had heard it earlier I'd have liked it more. It's fine! Was distracted listening during Hackathon too...
it was ok. i preferred the previous one what we reviewed.
I can honesty saw this is the first time i listened to an entire alblum with Iggy Pop. Not sure when it will concur again
Better than I expected
Klassiker.
I like this without loving it. I like how raw and punky and scuzzy it is. It's got a real attitude to it. 3.5 rounded down.
It's been some time since I last checked in on this list, about a month or so. Life gets in the way. As such, I don't have the luxury of having listened to this album within the last hour or day to better inform what I normally like to make a good and chunky review, I only have the hazy recollections of listening to it on a train heading south. That those memories are so hazy must be treated as a mark against this album. I settled on this being a 3/5 at the time, with nothing particularly gripping or rancorous; I can be a bit too forgiving with my "mehs" normally being given a still solid score. I just no longer remember exactly why I wasn't gripped. A shame to leave it at just that, but I'd prefer to push on with the remaining 1000+ albums than dredge back through an album I've already ticked off the list and found just okay.
not bad!
Yeah it was fine Like gimme danger
Im conflicted. Its good but its not great. I like noise, but this is sometimes noise for noise sake. Their first album is a masterpiece shame they couldn't back it up
I mean I didn't mind it, not something I'd listen to again personally but not too bad at all
3/5 Ok cool
Fairly tedious and boring. Neither the Bowie or Iggy mixes of the album are all that great, but if I had to pick one, I'd go with Bowie's versions. Seems like you have to be a huge punk fan to get much from this. I generally can appreciate heavy and / or punk albums, but this didn't strike me as being raw and heavy, but rather just flat out sloppy (in a lazy way, not in an intentional way). At least Iggy and The Stooges goes for variety instead of giving you the typical punk boredom of the same carbon copied chugga chugga power chords of their imitators. Most bearable: "Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell" Well, that is the third and final Stooges album from this list for me. Unfortunately I didn't really enjoy any of their albums.
Wish this clicked more.. some hard rock is pretty soft
wow the mix on that first song was crazy faves: Gimme Danger
Here’s some early hard rock/punk music from Iggy Pop and the gang. This album was remixed several times, and there is much discussion about which mix is the best. I listened to the remastered Iggy mix. I’m curious how the other mixes compare, but not curious enough to listen to all of them. “Penetration” and “I Need Somebody” were my favorite tracks. Both of them have a Howlin’ Wolf vibe.
Alright did expect to enjoy it more though
Solid album. Listened to the Iggy Mix version
Very cool, love iggys voice, fav song is Shake Appeal
This is a good early punk rock album. Having listened to Iggy (happy 79th birthday!) solo albums before I still prefered those better. There was also a Bowie and Iggy version to choose from and I chosed Bowie. There was a good enough variety in the songs but I was not the biggest fan.
6/10 A bit rough around the edges, but a decent listen
Punk, pushing into post-punk. Gimme Danger is a move into the more subdued and melodic. Quite nice. Your Pretty Face is Going To Hell is back to a more classic punk sound. Mix is good, can hear nice and clear the guitar licks. Penetration has some kind of xylophone/glockenspiel/synth which is a welcome introduction Oof Raw Power. All I can hear is that right-panned single high piano note. It's too distracting. I Need Somebody is a diversion to almost delta blues. Can see that there is a good variety of tracks here. But it's just not incredible is is? Best track - Gimme Danger, Penetration 3 stars
Mix was so jarring at the beginning but by the end I felt like it was quite cool. Def enjoyed the back half of the record a bit more. Ironically doesn’t have the raw power of the last stooges record we listened to imo. Iggy still cool and the riffs are so fuck u. Favs: penetration, shake appeal
Rough as but the songwriting shines through
So many remixes all so different. I think I found the original 1973 release which is certainly better than the Iggy remix. The guitars on this are outstanding.
Enjoyed a few songs but was a bit heavy for me.
Some great, some not so great.
I should like this more, but I don’t.
alright
Fun listen; maybe was groundbreaking at the time(?) but just sounded kind of like a standard good rock album to me.
Okay, but did not find a song to save to my personal playlist. Maybe I need another listen.
I am clearly teetering on the edge of some sort of fatigue when it comes to this list. I hate to feel like I'm maybe not giving enough credit where credit is due, but this is another album that just left me wholly unimpressed. And if it ends up that I'm not fatigued, then maybe I just don't care for much punk or Bowie in many senses. The mix on this album doesn't hit me, just like its aggressive but non-melodic songs. It doesn't lean too far into deconstructing music to make me uncomfortable though, and at least it's nice to know where Iggy Pop is from now. Highlights: N/A
Loud, aggressive, fast. Punk before the word was used for marketing purposes.
soooo es ikonischs foti! SOO ENDLICH SORRY LUCA s isch chlii wemiger chaotisch aber de iggy pop gaht immerno ab wienes zäpfli hahaha shake appeal isch reecht rock'n'roll han eig scho spass gha aber das verdient wiedermal s prädikat "schona coolio aber au alles echli ah mier verbio"
It’s clear this album was one of the forerunners of punk, which had to make it fascinating for listeners at the time. It’s pretty interesting in retrospect too. Search and Destroy definitely feels like the album’s mission statement. The energy is fantastic right from the beginning… but the overall sound feels so thin. It’s about here that I saw there was a “Bowie Mix” and an “Iggy Mix.” After reading a little about them I decided to listen to both, and then tried switching between them mid-song a few times. Frustratingly, both of them have different problems. Bowie’s is too thin, Iggy’s is too loud. Goldilocks never really arrives. The songs themselves are all good without any of them being particularly memorable. Iggy has a lot of vocal styles — I like some and don’t care for others. I dig the repeated celesta melody on Penetration… it almost feels like a post-punk track. Raw Power itself seems to be the blueprint for the Sex Pistols. I liked this record without really loving anything about it. Perhaps if it had production that could make it feel as visceral as a live performance I could get behind it a little more.
7/10 - It’s hard not to compare albums from the same band and use that as the standard. I think Funhouse was a better record but that shouldn’t reduce the score of this album. It’s a good early punk rock record and was worth the listen.
It is what it is.
Like the title, very raw, pretty powerful. Search and Destroy and Death Trip were my favorites. I wish it was a bit louder tho. 5.8/10
Not their best
Middy pop
I like the Stooges, I don't find my substance in them though. I can admire it for it's foundation on punk and the general sound of rock at the time. Raw Power is the perfect name, because that's really all it is: driving rhythm and lyrics that are pure rock for rock's sake.
Pretty solid for the most part; Iggy Popp’s energy/performance was probably the standout for me.
The title of the album exactly reflects its content. Full of energy, protest (I guess) and joy. However, I only enjoyed listening to the first two songs and rest of the record for not that great. Thanks a lot for keeping the record short !
pretty alright. i like a lot of iggy's performance. gimme danger was my favorite track
