Reviews (page 5 of 12)

Really, really fucking good! Dirty, scuzzy, filthy rock n roll! Love it! Short, sharp and at times brutal! Like being given a high five. But in the face. And with a brick. Iggy’s vocals are brilliant, the riffs are great! What’s not to like! TURN IT UP!!!!

Not bad.

This album rocks. The Iggy mix is way better. I remember hearing this as a teenager and being like, now this is rock.

Such an astonishing, influential album. Raw Power is the link between the 1960s MC5 era of music and the 1970s punk era. There's such belief, such anger, such energy baked into this album. Very recommended.

Mere catchy og memorable numre end på Fun House, men mangler den kaotiske energi. Svært at argumentere mod de bangers der er på den her dog

i’m a little more ambivalent towards this album than i had hoped going into it. probably more of a 3.5 but i could see it going up with more listens.

Paw Rower.

I really liked Raw Power, it's dirty, it's aggressive, it's got some swagger, and it sounds cool. No fucking around, gets straight into simple, no frills rock and roll with scuzz and noise and a hell of a lot that would influence later music from all sorts of genres. Your Pretty Face... and the title track are standouts, Death Trip not far off, no waste, and I gather there are two rather different mixes here from Bowie and from Iggy and I listened to the latter, which I thought was top, so whatever on that. Strong 4 that I was tempted to give a 5, really good stuff.

This is an album with just the right amount of rawness(!) - it feels like it's been crafted rather than just spat out, without losing what made it exciting in the first place. There's so much energy in this, Search and Destroy is an amazing opener, veers into being a bit to screamy rather than singy in a coouple of places, but not often and not by much. A comfortable 4/5, really enjoyed this.

- I knew "Raw Power" from "The Spaghetti Incident?" by Guns N' Roses, but I had never listened to the original. So, it was really cool to listen to the track "Raw Power" here - Great raw sound... it IS called raw power after all - ha!

I absolutely adore this album and everything by The Stooges. They were undeniably influential in the birth of punk and the proto-punk movement. If you're a punk fan, The Stooges are a must-listen.

Perfectly titled

December 21, 2024 HL: “Penetration”, title track, “I Need Somebody” Despite having given the other Stooges three stars last year (apologies to Fun House), I’m really enjoying this one. Some of the rhythm guitar parts sound more 90s than 70s

A masterpiece on its own, essential in attitude and execution, a forerunner of much that was to come, a f* y* I do it my way statement. Unfortunately hasn't aged that well and due to its maybe intentional reduced complexity it misses my personal 5.

The album no one could mix. Why anyone put 1972 Iggy Pop in charge of anything is beyond me. I guess Bowie did his best with what he had? Iggy's sludge-o-matic '90s version has its moments? Still, a mess is a mess. There are quite a few great songs here, and this could have been a great leap forward if it hadn't been botched from the start. I hate grading art, but this thing is making me, so 4 stars for the songs and 2 stars for the production. Bought this on cassette my freshman year of college.

Have never heard this before. The recording and mix seem to be all over the place. It sounds like it was recorded live, poorly. But the emotion, songwriting and performance is there. You can hear so many later bands in these songs. It was clearly influential. With a better recording it would be a classic. Even with its shortcomings it deserves 4 stars.

I really enjoyed this. Not life changing, but this is great. Lyrics, instrumentation, and writing all fucking rock. Probably listen again at some point. 4/5

I went with the Stooges mix instead of the Bowie mix. I listened to this probably 10 times. I was focusing on Iggy and his vocals and lyrics at first but the more I listened, guitarist Williamson is the real focal point. I went down a rabbit hole of his career and it's amazing the did two stooges albums and then became a producer and software engineer. The guitar tone and riffs absolutely make this album.

Oh yeah I was a fan of this one in college. Lots of punk and rock stars give this one props for its influence.

Love the raw power throughout, with some really nice guitar sound on songs like Gimme Danger.

The first two tracks kick off with energy and strong production, but the quality takes a dip as the album progresses.

Ain't no one other than Iggy - who in time has become somewhat of a caricature of himself. Resuscitated here by Bowie, The Stooges are given the "Iggy & the..." prefix and Bowie seems intent on utilising his wild-man persona to the fullest - evident on songs like 'Penetration' where Iggy's moaning and meowing of his inane horn-dog lyrics are so far up front in the mix that the music almost seems inconsequential. Thankfully Bowie and co. called up the Asheton brothers to provide some of the spark that fuelled the first two albums. Highlights: Search and Destroy, Gimme Danger, I Need Somebody.

really good album. love the first song and the album titled song the most. can see how iggy pop is considered the grandfather of punk rock in this album.

Love it x’s100.

I listened to the 50th Anniversary Legacy Edition on Spotify which had A TON of extra songs which I really liked. I just like this kind of music a lot and vibed with a lot more to the point that I got to disc 3 before I really felt the 2 hour and 45 minute length. Overall it was a great listen and I think the extra actually helped the rating because hearing Bowie sing and some live version enhanced this particular album.

Straight up punk music before punk. Hard, raw, uhh powerful. It starts off with its best song by far, but the rest of the album was still quality and enjoyable. Also doesn't overstay it's welcome, a crisp 34 minutes. Nice

It's a cool as hell album made even more interesting by its influence. What else is there to say than put it on (the iggy mix particularly)

My knowledge of Iggy is not very deep and certainly this was not what I was expecting. A bit more of a mellowness than ferocity. Fave: Search and Destroy.

A little bit front loaded, this one, but it slaps none the less! Fave tracks - "Search and Destroy" is a giant of a track, "Gimme Danger" is not far behind in stature. Really liked the sound of "Penetration" if not necessarily the title. 😏

A lot more compelling than their debut, production is better here but still not perfect by any means, maybe people still weren't sure how to produce this type of music. Still, really good. 4*

Punk, but with more of a rock and roll edge to it. It's a really great sounding album. Iggy kills it, like he's trying to sing from the bottom of his gut. The guitar sound is definitely a highlight here. I would describe it as dirty, scuzzy, filthy. The whole thing is just loud and the production is really raw. A bit of a wall of noise, but some great stuff to be heard here with good guitar work and solos. The vocals I really enjoyed a lot too.

some old punk I wasn't familiar with but enjoyed quite a bit

Iggy Pop is Mona's Dad in The Adventures of Pete and Pete

The term “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll” isn’t expressed as often these days as it used to be, and that can probably be attributed to the fact that there just isn’t a lot of music like this being made anymore. Because if there is any album that has popped up on the generator (so far) that incapsulates that phrase it’s definitely this one. ‘Raw Power’ is an accurate title. Just a half hour of pure energy to the point that it almost feels like you’re listening to a live album. The punk-esque opener ‘Search And Destroy’ punches you right in the ears with its addictive riffs. The smoky, autobiographical ‘Gimme Danger’. The heavy, angry, and energetic ‘Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell’. The not-so-subtle, steamy ‘Penetration’. The more rock ‘n’ roll, 60’s flavoured ‘Shake Appeal’. And the brilliant finisher ‘Death Trip’ - with its meta lyrics of just saying “fuck it, we’re doing it our way”. All fantastic tracks. It’s an absolute masterclass in variety and coherency. Although Iggy had a difficult time working with guitarist Williamson on this album, his riffs combined with Iggy’s raw, energetic vocals are a damn near perfect match along the 8 tracks. The 8 tracks that just seem to arrive, raise hell, and leave before you even know what happened. Influences are worn on their sleeves so proudly on each song, yet it’s still undeniably their own sound; with lyrics that are fairly simple on the surface, yet layered with multiple meanings. It’s a super fun album; and I hope there’s people out there who haven’t heard much (or any) of Iggy Pop’s work that find their way to discover ‘Raw Power’ (among other great releases of his) and hear just how much of a powerful figure he actually was in music; that he’s not just the old topless guy who appeared on bizarre insurance commercials. His music has a voice that demands to be heard, a rebellious spirit that feels unbreakable, and an energy that is almost unmatched. 4/5

Very good and visceral, you can tell all the early punk rockers listened to Iggy and the Stooges. 4.4 stars

Shit’s on fire, yo

So far ahead.

Quite adventures, must have been blown peoples' minds back then. Though it might not hold the same weight today, the energy and creativity on songs such as 'Raw Power' and 'Gimme danger' still shine through. The melodies hook you right in and Iggy's vocal delivery is very memorable. It's a product of it's time but in the best way possible. Additionally this album feels like a blueprint for what would become punk music with it's raw and eccentric vocals, such as the wild guitar melodies. All in all a pretty fun listen

Loved the listen - heard a lot of influence from this bad. Great Chord Progressions. Big Fan

i dig it but compared to their first two albums it feels a lot weaker. less raw emotion and vitriol in Iggy's voice, the groove i love so much in the first two is gone. still great and its influence is pretty clear to see though

Great album! Iggy Pop's energy really shows through.

Yeah, quite liked this. There is definitely a Rolling Stones feel to a number of tracks. The sound and feel of the tracks are very much of the era and it's a sound you can't easily replicate in the modern era. There's definitely a place for old school rock.

Gear: DCA ÆON 2 Noire Artwork: 👨🏼‍🎤🍌🎙️ Produktion (Iggy Mix - 2023 Remaster): 🎧😐🆗 Musik: 🥩🦖🧷 Wertung: 🥩🥩🥩(🥩)/5

Early 2000s house, great for putting you in a trance on a long flight (can confirm).

Iconic. Great guitar.

A little rowdy but enough refinement that it works well. Game-changer for hard rock and punk, at times when listening it's hard to believe it came out in 1972. First two tracks "Search and Destroy" and "Gimmme Danger" are the two standouts but the whole album is good.

Hell yeah

Absolute classic. Idk how I've gone this far in life without hearing the full album

I liked it, always heard iggy pop but never really listened

Highlights: Search and Destroy Gimme Danger Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell Raw Power I really wish the production was better on this album. Two different mixes, two different remasters, and neither one does justice to the music. Beyond that though, I love the frenetic energy on this album. This is the kind of music that inspires me to play guitar myself, there is something about the aesthetic that feels somehow attainable.

I opted for the Bowie mix. A little bit more fleshed out than the Iggy mix but still has some of the grittiness.

Sounds very 70’s. Slow song sounded a little like the Doors. Iggy Pop is a live wire. The lead guitar sounds a little bright and a little buzzy, even being remastered. Still, a fun album

Lekker scheuren Vond hem wel lachen uiteindelijk

Good proto punk. I don't really like the 50 year anniversary edition. It features the same songs a few times. That got repetitive for me. But still a solid album.

We already got a taste of proto-punk from 1975 a while ago. And yet here we go getting something which is somehow older and even sleazier than (The Dictators) Go Girls Crazy. I can't imagine the influence this album must have had. I'm also starting to think I enjoy punk a lot more than I had previously given it credit for, this landed in a very similar spot for me as our last punk album. in which pretty much everything included was somewhere ranging from good to great. If I had to compare the two I prefer the goofier nature of the previous punk album to this. But whats on display here is still only slightly below that in my opinion. As far as which version to listen to, I will primarily be rating the version provided by the website which is based on Iggy's mixes rather than those done by David Bowie. I like both of them and think they each have their own merits. Bowie's feels more focused on Iggy's vocal performance and can sometimes feel like it pushes the instrumentals out of focus too much (I mostly felt this on Bowie's version of Search & Destroy). It is still overall a better 'balanced' version. Iggy's really feels like it embodies 'Raw Power' in that it feels more loud and in your face, in some songs I actually preferred this but also found that it could be a bit grating in others. I would give Iggy's version a 7 and Bowie's an 8. Highlights: Search & Destroy, Gimme Danger, Raw Power, Shake Appeal

This album is my version of that experiment where they asked a stranger to hold their drink and then asked how their day was and if they gave them a cold drink they said it was shit and if it was a warm one they said it was good except it's me finding out this guy is a pedo the day before. Which is a shame since I like every song on this album and I'd never heard this album in its entirety but have been an iggy and the Stooges fan for quite some time Obviously deserves a spot Punk wouldn't exist without it and the unintentional(?) shitty mixing is to thank for a stylistic trope of a generation of albums. On Any other given day I might have given this album a 9 or a 10 which it probably deserves. 8/10 Fav tracks - All of 'em Least Fav - n/a

Listened to the Iggy Mix instead of the Bowie mix because that’s my preferred version of Gimme Danger which is my favourite song on this album. The mixing here isn’t great due to a very short post production schedule but I think it adds to the charm of this album. The album sort of loses its charm when you read about Iggy Pops nonce bullshit as well as Bowies involvement. Mixing and transatlantic kiddy diddling aside, this album rocks. The tone is consistent, the scumbag theme is prevalent throughout and Iggy Pops vocals are pretty varied and pretty much knock it out of the park on each track. If this album was 7 shit songs and Gimme Danger it would be a 3, I absolutely adore that song. Fortunately it’s 7 good songs and Gimme Danger so it’s an easy 4 from me.

It feels a bit too polished for a Stooges album, almost more power pop esque. The raw outbursts of Fun House made way for tighter songs.

Given that I am not much of a punk fan, I didn't think I would like this as much as I did. Favorite track: Gimme Danger other picks: I need someday, pretty face, raw power

Fuck yeah!

Muito bom!!!

A fun album, I think I like Iggy's solo stuff a bit more. Spotify had two different remasters, Bowie's mix and Iggy's mix and it was kind of fun to hear the differences. I am not musically inclined enough to specify how they were different, but I could tell they were different.

(snarl)

Does what it says on the tin 4.5/5

Stones with more power. More roughness

verrrrry nice...i've always liked iggy pop more as a concept/icon than as a musician and of course i am automatically endeared to several of his songs for velvet goldmine reasons but this is a damn good record regardless! fav tracks: gimme danger; raw power; i need somebody; shake appeal

iggy mix > bowie mix tbh highlights: search and destroy, gimme danger, penetration (aug 19 2024)

An aggressive statement of intent which is still as fierce today as on release

I'm not fond of all tracks on this album (e.g., pretty face) but there is just about enough raw power for four stars.

I feel like I’m reaching a greater understanding of the evolution of music listening to this. And it’s just plain fun. Thrashing guitars and an unstoppable head bob, it’s very cool.

Not as good as fun house. Still very good, but lowkey kinda campy in a bad way in some spots. Less of gritty, sweaty vibe, but still very fun and rockin

I love Iggy Pop and The Stooges and was ecstatic this album came up in the rotation!

Perfect energy. 4/5

Previously rated: The Stooges (2/5) ************************** This was quite a surprise, as I wasn't a fan of "The Stooges" album. Straight-forward rock with hectic guitar playing and high-energy vocals. A couple of the songs he sounds like Jim Morrison. The drums are slightly more in the background than I'd like, but this is something I'd listen to again.

“Look out honey cuz I’m using technology”: I had no idea that was a stooges line. Nice. Also “your pretty face is going to hell” also coming from this is news to me. I love learning about this stuff. Musically this is much more my jam than the solo Iggy album from a week ago. I like the raw punk style and the unrestricted guitar noodling. The songs all sound pretty similar, which is fine because it’s short. It’s all energetic with no bullshit. Even “I need somebody” is crunchy enough to not really stray from the main thematics. Overall quite good for the era and the genre.

Really wish I had heard this when I was younger.

Raw Power is an instance of an album which is great but suffers from poor production. Writing-wise and instrumentally, this album is great, The guitars are really cool sounding in a lot of the tracks and Iggy's singing, while silly at times, was actually pretty well done and provided something new for every track. This albums only real problem is the production, David Bowie's production sounded really poorly done and kinda feels like this album was being recorded in a dumpster. It also just doesn't really sound like a studio album. If you added crowd cheers and some pre-song banter, you could probably trick me into thinking this is a live album. I still really like this album, it just needed a better production job which is why it gets a 3.5 Best Song: Search And Destroy Worst Song: I Need Somebody

Standout songs: Search and Destroy Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell Death Trip

My favorites: Search & Destroy, Shake Appeal. Overall I like the Stooges but sometimes there's a lot of Iggy Sauce. I'm not a huge fan of Iggy Pop but he's grown on me over the years. He's been kind of an acquired taste for me and I like this Stooges album better than the last one we had.

It's good rock, and the sign of things to come. Favorite track: probably "Death Trip."

never listened to the stooges before, good stuff

Love this record. Love the glockenspiel thing on penetration - unexpected

Album title is accurate! It's raw, and I like it.

Good, iggy pop has a good punk voice

Raw punk stuff. Enjoyable

Tiene mucha onda. Y ese señor Pop es una fuerza de la naturaleza.

This is such a big improvement on their first album, very unique sounding for the time. I feel like I never really gave athe Stooges a fair shot, this really proves me wrong. This honestly sounds like a grunge album in places. Gimme Danger gives me chills. Not a perfect album though by any means, very messy and a couple of the songs don't hold up. I listened to the Iggy mix and the Bowie mix, both could be better!

A solid solid-rock LP, it's crazy the kind of star power behind this album

I can tell it is good, so it is a 4.

I think I like funhouse more but I really like the guitars and backing vocals in this one. Excellent album.

Strange relationship with the stooges. I love listening to them but also always have a nagging feeling that I want it to end soon. Strange! This was good though. Felt quite ‘raw’ 3.7

I really liked this. It felt like it all came from one guys brain and their mood swings. Stooges are becoming a fast favourite.

Als je een plaat begint met ''I'm a street walking cheetah with a heart full of napalm. 8,5/10 Highlights: Search and Destroy Raw Power I Need Somebody Shake Appeal

Proto-punk powerrr! 8/10 Highlights Search and Destroy

Old rock but this one is actually interesting and has some charm. I can see why Iggy is cited by many as a big influence. I'm sure he was electric live.

First listen Saved 5/8 Top track: Search and Destroy

Day189 - album title says it all. rock on

Good rock, not 5 though

\m/ I've spun this one many times. nasty Rock n Roll record. \m/

i am trying so hard to notice the difference between the iggy and bowie mixes. i think i barely prefer the iggy mix

The songs are bangers, but wow the recording quality is just awful. I tried both mixes and they both seem wrong in different ways. Too bad...

Great listen, kinda punk / grunge roots

Save me from the 300 70s folk albums on this list Iggy Pop.

Lekker rauw album, veel goede nummers

Being that 90s/00s pop-punk and alt rock is probably my favorite music era, I'm always fascinated to delve into the foundation of punk, which The Stooges are major pioneers in. The Stooges toe the line perfectly in my opinion between being listenable and pleasing to the ear while also maintaining that punk edge. While they still have the main tenants of punk's core (fast, loud, unapologetic), the majority of the songs have some catchiness and melodies therein. Very cool album and makes me want to dive deeper into the inception of punk at large. Notable Tracks: - Search and Destroy - Gimme Danger - very cool guitar solo - Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell - I Need Somebody - bluesy - Death Trip 8/10

Classic album. Enjoy most of the songs on here. Good energy throughout. Will I listen to again: 90%

I can hear the importance of this album historically and liked the rock and roll! Glad to have listened to this.

Not my favourite stooges album (funhouse), but a really solid album!

I have heard of Iggy Pop/Stooges but none of these songs sounded terribly familiar. I did enjoy the sound of the album: little bit punk, real grimy garage-style high intensity rock. 3.5/5

Very enjoyable. Can't decide which mix I like better

This is the first true punk record. Front to back jams that will get your blood pumping. Just make sure to listen to the Iggy Pop mix and not the terrible Bowie mix.

Better than expected

Great music with a lot of raw power.

Oh yeah! Real good rock.

Awesome album. Energy is high, guitar work is brilliant and Ignacious Pop and the gang but together some fucken bangers. Fav songs: - Search and Destroy - Gimme Danger - Your pretty face is going to hell - Raw Power - I need somebody

I honestly don't love this as much as I thought i would. The energy is clearly there, but to me it sounds a bit dated. Not bad in any sense, but didn't completely win me over either.

7/10 I like Iggy Pop. there are a couple of songs here that I like a bunch and some that I don't like a bunch but like. That is how I've arrived at this rating. 6-4-2024

I'm already familiar with a lot of songs on this album but it was good to review the whole thing.

It's altogether a pretty good album. Iggy is not my favorite, but he's a great musician. This album reminds me why.

Another killer and raw record from one of the singular bands of their era. Everything they made was great. Loved hearing this this morning, quick and punchy. Great record as always.

Raw and dangerous...

Brash, brutal and probably about as an authentic sounding live album from Iggy in this period as you are likely to hear.

If you strip away the false trappings of free love and magical brotherhood, this is what you’re left with: passion, anger, raw emotion, and a sign of punky things to come. It’s sometimes a bit sparse, but it’s never lacking in energy.

Fuck que c'est bon.

Favourite tracks: search and destroy; gimme danger; shake appeal; raw power

I like the Stooges, I like Iggy Pop. I like this album. I’d own a copy, and I’d play it regularly. That’s enough for 4 stars from me. But I don’t love it. It’s not the revelation Fun House was for me, it’s a bit more basic, and it’s somehow more contrived and self-aware, which makes it less raw. Also, the mixing is straight ass, on both versions, and makes it extremely difficult to sit through.

The 5th 70s punk album in a row? Okay... what shall I tsay, the grandfathers of raw punk... take my upvote

Wow what a difference a mix can make. I have probably heard the Bowie mix every time I’ve listened to Raw Power and it always seemed too thin and lacked clarity. For this reason I never really enjoyed Raw Power, I always understood its significance but it just never really connected with me. So the link on here pulled up the Iggy mix and I figured I’d give it a try. Oddly enough as I sit down to pick apart all the things I’ve always thought were weak about this album I find myself locked in to a clunky old wooden rollercoaster that throws you around and feels like it’s about to fly of the track and I absolutely love it! “Search and Destroy”, and “Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell” are the big drops that keep this ride in motion while “Gimme Danger” coasts through some turns in between showing me this album has more dynamics than I remember. “Penetration” is surprisingly chill for the most part, feels like the band is struggling to hold that energy back which makes it even more intriguing. The title track “Raw Power” did start to drag a bit for me and had me looking ahead on the track to see if there was a surprise coming up. Then “I Need Somebody” comes on and once again shows that this album isn’t the one trick pony I always thought it was. As a fan of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs I now see how this record informed a lot of Karen O’s vocal delivery. “Shake Appeal” is a highlight for me on this listen and it really illustrates the influence between the Stooges and bands like Queens of the Stone Age. “Death Trip” is another one that feels like it goes on a bit too long although Iggy’s screams on this song are phenomenal. This final song feels like those last couple hills and turns as the momentum wears off and you begin to catch your breath. All that being said after this listen I went back and forth between the Bowie mix and the Iggy mix and I gotta say for me, Iggy is the clear winner here. The Iggy mix is warmer and the low end is much more present, there’s better separation of the instruments so you can make out what’s being played. I’ve read a lot of why this happened and how there has been criticism for both mixes but I won’t go into that. Before I would’ve given this album a 3, with the Iggy mix I’ll give it a 4.

I've heard the first track before, but I've never sat through a listen for the whole album. The album name is perfect for how this sounds. Definitely Raw. Definitely ahead of its time.

I absolutely adore this album and everything by The Stooges. They were undeniably influential in the birth of punk and the proto-punk movement. If you're a punk fan, The Stooges are a must-listen.

I need to relisted to this album on a day im not traveling and can blast it as loud as i want. Anyway, great album which still holds up despite the years and development in music. When will they remove my punk card for preferring post and proto punk to proper punk. Hopefully never

Really weird sounding production, on both the Iggy mix and the Bowie mix. The tunes are great though, Iggy is positively off his rocker.

IGGY POP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Despite the smashing underground success and legacy defining release of Funhouse, Iggy Pop had some frustrations with his lack of mainstream fame. This as well as Dave Alexander losing the battle with his alcoholism meant the Stooges had to go back to the drawing board for the third time hoping to charm. Unable to function through the disarray, the Stooges broke up. Following an intervention from David Bowie and some time, The Stooges were now Iggy and the Stooges. With the frustration of things not working out guiding the sound, Raw Power is the resulting project, and the adequate description for its aura. This album in its form at release lies in conflict with itself. Iggy wanted everything to be turned to 11 and completely bombastic. David Bowie knew that a mainstream audience the size of Iggy’s wants wouldn’t be completely ready for that. As a result, sacrifices were made by dampening parts of the mix to be more palatable but the result just ends up drowning key parts to the sound. The vocals on Search and Destroy, the keys on Penetration, and the Guitar on the title track are mainly what come to mind for me. We fortunately have the ideal vision in the form of the Iggy Mix which allows everything to have the space that is needed for the sound to really bleed effectively through its sheer volume and compression. It’s nice to be able to compare the two mixes. The strength of this album comes from Iggy’s performance and the wonderful songwriting. The Stooges lyricism has always taken a backseat to their sound and Iggy’s performance but the retooling of their sound allows Iggy to be more front and center and their lyrics to shine their well crafted moments. Iggy also keeps things entertaining and enthralling with his energetic yowls and wonderful bluesy voice. He really brings a bravado that helps you buy into the powerful unstoppable energy that surrounds him. The shuffling of the lineup ends up making this album musically weaker than Fun House. Having James Williamson at lead guitar over Ron Asheton who is sidelined at bass is an undeniable downgrade. The replacement of the Tenor Sax with keys doesn’t really fill in the gaps as well, especially when everything is supposed to be turned up to 11. The arrangements themselves also feel more amateur compared to the wonderful tight grooves the band was able to pull off on their previous release. This doesn’t affect the enjoyability of the project too much as it does highlight Iggy’s strengths more but it’s not like those strengths were absent on previous releases. There are a lot of standout tracks on Raw Power. Penetration, Raw Power, Death Trip, and Search and Destroy are my favorites. The rest of the album doesn’t have anything outright bad. Ultimately Funhouse is too much of a defining album for what the Stooges can be at their best that stripping down the fidelity and the loss of band members will always make this stage of the Stooges feel like an imitation that could never stand up matter how well executed, experimental or true to the identity it could be. The Stooges music is like pizza though. Impossible to mess up and the worst of it will always come in the clutch. That is unless pizza is just outright not your thing or you can’t have it. High 7/10

Recognized Iggy Pop right away. I didn't know he was The Stooges too! lol I did enjoy the album. 4 stars. This gave way to punk! and I'm all about that.

Noisy but entertaining. And only 36 minutes long!

Like with Keanu Reeves, when I see Iggy Pop, I upvote. This is early stuff, raw and a bit ambiguous in message. Lots of sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll going on here. But it has one element that I always like, whether it is a singer-songwriter, a jazz fusion band, or a hardcore punk drug fueled mosh fest... it is "real." They are right there present with their audience, interactive and special. There is a lot to love here, and less to gloss over than might be usual for (what I listened to) which was a sprawling multii-hour 29 track long show. The fact I never got bored or turned away once is telling...

"Raw Power" is a fitting name. This album rocks.

Better than their first album

Enjoyed more than I thought I would.

Its good but its just a lot lol

The Iggy mix is better than the Bowie mix. Great raw proto-punk. I can see the influence. I like every song on here, except Penetration not a fan of that song.

Thoughts before listening: I didn't like the first Stooges album I heard on here as much as I thought I would. In theory I should love their primitive take on rock n roll, but only a few songs really grabbed me on that one. I'm interested to see if I feel differently about this album. Review: "Search and Destroy" is such a great song and a perfect way to kick things off. I'm definitely enjoying this more as a cohesive album than the first one with the guitar work and Iggy's vocals being the stars here. Other highlights are "Gimme Danger" and "Raw Power". Now I'm trying to figure out if I prefer the original David Bowie produced version or Iggy Pop's later remaster. Seems like this is a major debate with Stooges fans, with many preferring Iggy's sludgy version because that is supposedly what the Stooges wanted this album to sound like at the time. For me, I can certainly understand this stance, but I think I'm liking Bowie's version better. Either way, this is a 4-star album.

Il y a presque un an, Iggy m’ouvrait le bal des 1001 albums avec un super album, jsuis content de le retrouver sur un autre disque de rock sale pré-punk qui déchire

This album dragged rock from the psychedelic party, down a dark alley and gave it 2 black eyes. This is punk before punk was even a thing. The terrible recording quality just adds to the feeling of raw power.

My review is going to beat around the bush about as much as this album does. It's punchy, energetic, and I really like it.

Decent album, not what I would choose, but it’s still good.

Yknow what this shit is awfully mixed but it's too vibey to not love high score honestly partly cause I'm in a good mood I'm enjoying it more 4/5

classic punk - homogenous but it is what it is tbh

I really know nothing about Iggy Pop nor the Stooges, but I always thought they sounded cool, I'm gonna keep it that way

Geluisterd in de gym, van genoten. Search and Destroy and Penetration waren m’n favs! Iggy is een bijzonder figuur

I heard the lead singer of The Chats once distill punk as something like, 'it's easy to play punk rock, it's much harder to BE punk rock.' And I think that mostly captures the significance of this record. Iggy Pop was punk before punk existed, which was perhaps as consequential an achievement as the songwriting and technical execution of Iggy & The Stooges' actual songs and albums. On Raw Power, I can naturally hear ahead to The Ramones, The Clash, and The Sex Pistols, but also even as far ahead as Queens of The Stone Age ("Go With The Flow" lifting the driving riffs and banging piano from "Raw Power" + "I Wanna Be Your Dog" from Iggy's S/T). Looking forward to hearing more, probably at least Lust For Life and The Idiot. Still, in my view 'punk' and 'cred' for their own sake do not a great artist make of Iggy Pop any more than they do of GG Allin. Moreover, on a pure listening level, with its eight songs comprising 34 minutes of music: fully 50 years removed, it's certainly a classic, but it's hard to think of Raw Power as a true five-star album.

Iggy Mix 5 Bowie Mix 3

it's not bad chugga chugga

when i had to listen to Funhouse by The Stooges earlier in the generator, i didn’t really like it and i didn’t know how to feel about listening to another Stooges record, but this was a great record, i was not bored at all during this album, all songs were punchy and rugged and o really liked the songs. this makes me want to listen to more of the band and even relisten to Funhouse. i feel this album was better to listen to to get into the band rather than Funhouse strong 8

Fun early iggy pop

- Iggy mix or Bowie mix? - I really enjoy the guitar tuning on this record - iggy is a legend

better than expected. nice guitar. A+ for creativity. low 4 first 2 songs are the best

Love the energy, attitude, instruments, and the album as a whole. A little stronger at the start, but a great time. I listened to it twice in a row.

Me gustó este disco, sobre todo las canciones de Search and Destroy y Gimme Danger.

Råt og tungt. Både guitar, trommer og Iggys vrælende stemme rammer en lige i smasken

Loved a few of these tracks. Would rank higher if I thought it was a no skipper.

Excellent

A bit of a shock on first play. Poor production and an assault of sound took a second to get used to. By the second track, I was all in, and that crappy production enhanced the experience. An album meant to be listened to on a sony walkman with tinny headphones on a school bus wearing a denim jacket as a 14 year-old with angst. OK, the walkman was 10 years after this release, but carrying a record player on a bus is impractical, and besides, I'm not quite that old. I need somebody is the Iggy I know. I don't know if this is a flashback to older work or a premonition of later albums, but this is the sound I expect from Iggy Pop.

I think I listened to this too late in life to be fully affected by it. But I still feel the energy of it and dig some of the songs.

3.8 Not the best of Iggy and/or the Stooges, but still pretty good. Bowie's mix is more interesting than Iggy's

Iggy and The Stooges are very cool. I'm feeling a bit of Rolling Stones situation where some songs are incredible and others don't move me much. But with the Stooges even the songs I don't like so much have a sound, an energy that feels like I *should* like it. I can imagine being in a dingy basement club having these songs blasting and dancing around and it being the best thing ever. A bit like listening to early Beatles, if I could be back in that time and place it would be amazing, but sitting here at a desk I'm yet to quite grasp it. And yet I feel the fault is not with me and not with the music! In short, I need to listen to this more than once to know what I feel about it. I was going to give it a three, but then the last song has come on and I'm a sucker for a chunky repetitive riff or bassline so I'm giving it an extra star for that. And I've "liked" just over half the songs on the album which is pretty good going.

The album title says it all. Ahead of its time.

forgot the iggy and the stooges existed. one of the better rock albums of this time. iggy mix is nice and heavy can see how this is influential

I surprised my self by really enjoying this. It was rough around the edges in the best kind of way. Wasn't a great fan of the mixing but it added something to the unpolished vibe. Short, raw and punky. I dunno, I feel like I shouldn't really like it but I do. Forbidden fruit or maybe I was just in the mood for it.

The first few songs are pretty great. 4/5

Iggy Pop is a jackass. This album does rock though.

Plenty of bangers. Love the half-punk, half-crooner vibe

I thought my phone alarm was going off during Penetration. Wouldn't be the first time that happened, to be fair.

Not something I’d choose to listen to, but I agree that it’s good.

Early punk from young Iggy

Iggy Pop - another one of those greats that I've been meaning to really get into. And boy, this record knocked me on my ass. This is ROCK AND ROLL. Ann Arbor Michigan represent! Go Blue baby!

This is it, the start of punk. An album that spawned thousands of bands, including The Sex Pistols and The Clash. Raw Power has exactly that, raw power. Search and Destroy, Gimme Danger are incredible openers. The album is relentless, has great riffs and just enough melody to keep you listening 8.2/10 4.3/10

Great vocalist and a really hot guitar - exciting, ramped up punk. Listened ti it twice. But not my style, generally.

The album title is definitely appropriate. Not very polished, but that is to be expected from this genre. My biggest complaint is that I could almost smell Iggy’s sweat while listening to it.

Really enjoyed it! Upbeat and fun to have on while cooking!

Iggy performs to every person in the house. Great album (go with Iggy’s mix over Bowie’s). The early punk roots mixed with blues and psychedelic rock is a lot of fun.

Really great album, hurt a bit by legendarily poor production and some inconsistency, but great stuff. One of those albums where the album title is a perfect summation of the album sound. Top tracks: Search And Destroy, Gimmie Danger, Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell, Raw Power, Death Trip

Perfect name for the album, and when I want some I’ll know where to look.

Relevant because the the arrangements and post-production is the blueprint for punk and grunge. Not my favorite taste

Whoa. Now that rocks. It does bash and crash a little longer than needed in some spots, but yeah. It rocks. Best song: Search and Destroy

It has been the shortest album so far, it is enjoyable. The high pitched voice of Iggy felt out of place on search and destroy but then it gets better and better with each song. I can reallly feel this album as a base for bands that came after them.

A few good songs on this one. Search and Destroy is a classic, and Gimmie Danger is good. The title track, Raw Power, is alright too. I could probably leave the rest of the album.

Not exactly my cup of tea, so to speak, but I unexpectedly enjoyed it.

Old school punk

Un espectacular trabajo de la primera banda de Iggy Pop. La colaboración con Bowie en las composiciones brilla como un diamante en medio de un precioso caos proto-punk. Un indispensable para cualquiera que disfrute de la música pesada.

The power of blues with a punk rock overlay is striking and attractive. The guitar trails seemingly have no direction which only adds the hypnotizing effect.

I love when the album’s name has an intimate relationship with the album’s mood-much like Pantera’s Vulgar Display of Power. The dirty sound of the guitar has influenced a lot of the bands I like to listen, but there are also interesting experiments such as the vocals in Penetration and the end of Death Trip.

First time listening to a full Stooges album and now I get the hype. Pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the album considering this isn't a typical genre or musical decade I gravitate towards. 4/5

Is this album good because of the music, or is it good because of Iggy Pop's influential disruption of the musical scene during the time? I was going to give this album three stars, but the blues inspired riffs throughout the album, combined with the overuse of cowbell in Gimme Danger really elevate the album to four stars.

Notable track: Search and Destroy // Favorite Tracks: Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell, Penetration, Shake Appeal

4/5. Bästa låt: Gimme Danger Lyssnat väldigt mycket på den här skivan, och öppningsspåren på båda sidorna är svårslagna, men Gimme Danger har något mer som gör den snäppet bättre. Jävligt bra skiva.

Not my genre but it was ok

Solid album very high energy. I appreciate hearing one the early influences of punk music. would recommend to others if they want to hear something a little more on the aggressive side from the mid 70's

This remaster is certainly good, has a lot of dynamicness, even though the songs may not be as supercharged as later hard rock like Metallica. Classic punk sound as well.

There is no denying the significance of this album in influencing punk and even heavy metal. The attitude, the power of the guitars, it’s all there. I had sometimes viewed this negatively having only ever heard the original mix, which is pretty horrible and completely flat. This time around I dove into the Iggy mix and Bowie mix, and I’d say the Bowie mix is probably the most even, whereas the Iggy mix gives it the punch of Fun House. Both have their merits, and breathe life into all these tracks. Iggy sounds more like a rockabilly singer on this album with his shrieks and squawks, the lineage from Jerry Lee Louis is now more obvious. There is also a clear sense of danger, dread, and devilish fun throughout.

Im not sure I’d ever heard this before. An album prefaced by its reputation, but, generally excellent punk in an error that was yet to even know what that was. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Fast, short, and energetic.

Hört sich frisch, aufmüpfig coole an.

Réttnefndasta plata sem ég hef hlustað á. Þvílíkur kraftur, Iggy er einstakur.

Great stuff

Over 50 years old, but still sounds pretty fresh. The mix is pretty bad; I preferred the Bowie mix over the Iggy one, but neither are great. But the underlying material is solid, and there's some great guitar on the record.

penetration and need somebody are so cool. love this album. Bowie’s mix is fucking dog shit lmao; can barely hear the drums. Iggy’s mix is good but the guitar solos are a bit harsh sounding. i was prepared to give this five stars but honestly the last couple songs didn’t do much for me. still a killer album, and only eight songs! my favourite number of tracks for an album to have.

Another classics from back in the day. Doesn't sound as raw as I did when it first came out.

Really great listen, lots of energy and personality.

Really enjoyed this. Old school interesting punk.

I love the energy and distortion on this album. Iggy pops vocals are great too, I love it when he’s doing more rough and screamo vocals. Apart from the energy, I would say choruses aren’t as sticky as I’d like them to be. I love your pretty face, shake appeal, I need somebody. Search and destroy is good but the drums are so behind, the mixing sounds weird to me. While the rest of the songs sound full and the bass is punchy and heavy, it’s the complete opposite on the opener. The drums and bass are just hidden I feel. Raw power is fine, the riff I feel like gets a bit tiring bec it goes through the song. However the ending of the song is amazing. Bowie’s mix sounds shrill and I much prefer iggy’s mix. It has more distortion and fullness. It’s a strong 3 to a light 4.

I knew of this album, but I'd never actually listened to it before. Hey, it's only just over 30 minutes long, so I listened to the Bowie mix, then the Iggy mix right after. I think I preferred the Iggy mix, but both had their merits. It's very difficult to rate this 5 stars, as it's obviously imperfect. However, it's impossible to avoid, well the raw power I guess. It's sludgy, dirty music with the lead guitar standing out alongside Iggy's vocal performance and everything else obscured in the murky production. I guess at the time this sounded like nothing before. There's a bit of a Jim Morrison influence sometimes in the vocals, but it's tenuous at best.

Those scuzzy guitars we know and love. Primal Scream. Sigue Sigue Sputnik. The production feels muddy, sounds like a tape of a live band, maybe that’s the copy or maybe that’s the idea. Stooges come up time & time again in music autobiographies of my heroes, they were Gods. Iggy has such strong vocals, gravitas. Raw Power indeed, so much energy. I actually don’t know any of the tracks of this. This is wild, dangerous, music to lose your sense to. ‘Pop produced the recording sessions himself and David Bowie assisted with post-production work, though the team were allotted only one day to mix the album and the resulting fidelity was poor.’ Raw Power the track sounds like punk before punk. How good would this have been live. Just 34 mins of this as an LP of this name should be. Production sounds like a garage band so much has come out of this The Fall sound. The LP ends unexpectedly though, feels unplanned, I think there are better Stooges LPs out there.

Classic power punk.

pleasant early punk

Classic rock

My appreciation for punk has increased over the years. I like this stuff.

Was ok, classis iggy.

Raw Power indeed. Search and Destroy is a tour de force and although the rest of the album doesn’t hit the same level. It’s raw, loud and full of swagger

So much tude in this record. It oozes charisma, in both the playing and vocal performance. A thrill to listen to even now. Fave track: Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell

im not sure how to compare this to their debute, its way too different. while one is the core of proto punk this one sounds as if bowie played with the stones. now, dont get me wrong, this is a great album, im just amazed by the difference, and in a way, i like this one more even more than the debut. it sounds really mean, iggy sounds like an evil son of a bitch, accompained by the precise and heavy rock and roll instrumental.

Can you feel it? Raw power! Hits very well. Classic rock with powerful guitar

Soft 4

Low 4 imo. Pretty general punky whatever. It's good and fine but nothing revelatory for me

In your face with some underrated subtlety. Good album

Iggy Pop isd great

Really liked it, enough to listen through both the Bowie mixes and Iggy mixes. It’s cheating to say that Gimme Danger is my favorite (because of Velvet Goldmine) but also liked Shake Appeal and I Need Somebody.

It’s Iggy. Reminds me more of the 80s style than 73’.

Dig that old school garage rock

All our pretty faces are going to hell, Iggy, and when they do, hopefully they'll play your songs... 👹👹👹👹

gritty and pretty heavy for its time. solid album from the early punk legends. highlights: “search and destroy”, “your pretty face is going to hell”, “raw power”.

This is the band I wanted The Doors to be. I've not listened to them before, but I like it.

Lives up to the name. Rough cut, but looking into the production history I'm amazed it sounds as polished as it does!

stand out track - Gimme Danger

10/05/23

Well this is interesting. Arguably THE proto punk record. Unfortunately because London Calling is such an incredible album, this doesn't have the same impact when juxtaposed against it. I still enjoyed it a lot more than most Iggy Pop. I Need Somebody was the highlight, heard the first two tracks too much. Between a 3 and 4 but I'll round up for the legacy

Very cool and good. I listened to both the Iggy and Bowie mixes and both had something to offer. Search and Destroy is sick. I think it loses its way a bit at the end but still a quality listen.

I liked this a lot more than I expected to. Not really an Iggy Pop fan, but this is much more a Stooges band album. Some great guitar work on songs that really do rock pretty hard.

i heard this shit b4

Nice albume, liked it, soo... 4 stars :)

73/100

Pretty fucking cool honestly. Couple tracks on here that don't do it for me, but the rest is sick. Enjoyable listen!

- Listening to Iggy Mix first. - Liked the Bowie Mix better! It's less "muffled" - Great album overall. Noisy and energetic.

Loving how much Iggy Pop is on this list. Not much else to say, this album rules!

Great opening track, consistently good album

listened to the Iggy Mix, very solid instrumentals, distortion could be a little too heavy sometimes. can certainly see why it's an influential album in punk, but overall most of the songs are too similar to each other

Absolute banger! Great album!

This is an album you need to listen to LOUD. It is full of energy and has such a raw powerful sound (pun intended). There seem to be like 5 different mixes of this album, I chose the 50th anniversary remaster of the Bowie Mix. In this mix, there is more of a balance between the vocals, bass, and guitar which I like a lot. The first three tracks are probably my favorite from the album, full of energy, but can still slow down when needed. Iggy Pop's vocals are perfectly manic (see Penetration as a great example) and angry, but also so passionate and it really fits the vibe they were going for with the entire album. If you want to listen to this album, turn that dial up to 10, maybe 11! Key tracks: Search and Destroy, Gimme Danger, Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell, Raw Power

The Stooges right after Velvet has been a a few days of listening pleasure. Much like Lou and Velvet, Iggy and The Stooges have really grown on me the last several years. Whenever I get restless, I throw on some Stooges then let the genre play the day away. Younger generations, this is one of your punk pioneers. Just good, loud, in your face punk that's going to make you move in your seat. I see David Bowie produced this album. I listened to podcast about Iggy Pop, specifically when he was living in Ypsilanti, Michigan about Bowie staying with him, working on his drug issues and music. Is this the result? If so, good shit Bowie, you helped create one kick ass album. Hell, most of what I hear from these guys is kick ass. Perfect album name too! If you ever need a pick me up on a shitty day, throw on some Stooges. It definitely works for this guy. I would have loved to see these guys live! I enjoyed really everything off this album but my favorites have to be Search and Destroy, Gimme Danger, Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell, Raw Power and I Need Somebody. But damn, they're all good. BTW, there's a funny as show to watch when your really stoned called Your Pretty Face is Going To Hell. Or at least I like it or maybe I just liked to be stoned. Either way...... Another side note, Bowie helped Iggy, Bowie helped Lou. Bowie really is a legend. RIP. RIP Lou. A great few days of music. Wonderful start to the work week. I can't quite get to that top mark of a 5, but this is damn close. 4.5

All snarling power, dated production but totally essential for its influence. (I tried the Bowie mix and the Iggy mix and I like the former)

Great album, so much raw energy, I prefer fun house, but this is added to my frequent rotation now.

This is great, need to be in the right mood, 4 stars

Interesting listen, lots of similarities between this and the Ramones.

Really like

Day 1 9/10

Iggy Pop fronted this great band, The Stooges and with the band produced his most interesting and "must-hear" work. Pop's music career has been all over the music map, dabbling in pop and other genre's and though he produced some good music, he was no Bowie. His best work was when he rocked hard with the Stooges and you can't deny their influence and importance in early 70's rock. All three (official) albums are essential listening and Raw Power is as good or better than the first two.

Iggy and the Stooges. Perfect way to start my week. Hopefully the rest of this week's list will be as good as this one.

el álbum en general es bastante bueno. bastante experimental para su época. no me llego a enganchar del todo el álbum pero tiene una onda que me gusta. canciones favoritas: Search and Destroy, Raw Power 8/10

Some really listen to able hard rock, the mixing allows for a good experience without the ear ringing

Already listened

Really fun album. Love the punk power here.

Pretty damn badass not gonna lie. Shockingly short. Don't think there's any true stand outs but the entire album is really cool.

Honestly a great listen. Iggy really knows how to keep you interested. I especially like the songs where he'd randomly shout at the beginning of them. No stand out songs as this is one you should listen to all the way through

Great album. If the draw was the stage presence and drama, then this must have been just the best live.

High energy punk rock

Good album, fun punky garage rock

Didn't think I would like it but I did. Also could the album cover is absolute perfection.

Listened to both the Bowie and Iggy production - clearly a crispier edge on Iggy's version, chose wisely.

Good energy

This was better than expected

Punky sound that wasn't too raw/rough. I could go for more like this

I always liked these guys, but they just were never the same after they replaced Curly with Shemp.

1973: A great year for music. Straight to the point: Iggy Pop and the Stooges created Punk Rock. They were not the only ones, but this is the album that really gets it together. Reading about the different approach to music and guitar due to the new guitarist is really interesting and helps connect the lines to the Clash, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, and Patti Smith

Raw, electric, powerful.

70 of 1001 The Stooges - Raw Power Favorite Track : Gimme Danger Rating : 4/5 A rocking album from Iggy and the Stooges. Much more rocking, actually. Good listen. Don't brush it aside because you don't like "punk". This rocks.

It’s pretty good.I like the energy. It’s pretty Dates but compared to the Beatles I can see why this was considered roll so edgy and scary.

Just like "Fun House," this rocks pretty hard (maybe even harder) and was undeniably ahead of it's time for punk music. Can't really name any standout tracks, but that's because the insane energy is retained the whole way through. I'm not sure their music has fully clicked with me yet, but it is still very enjoyable. Looking forward to listening to more of The Stooges. I've also discovered that there are several different mixes to this album, and that David Bowie's versions are notoriously bad. I definitely noticed this after putting on the first song of the 2023 remaster, as I pretty much immediately switched to the other version that was on YouTube Music. Worth listening again? For sure. Initial rating 4/5

Raw indeed

Iggy pop innit 👌

This isn’t quite as strong a set of songs as the previous two Stooges albums, but still, this is a visceral and rocking album.

First thing - shockingly different from The Stooges album of 4 years previous. This is better.

Overall, the tracks on here are hit-or-miss, but the hits are absolute bangers.

I enjoyed it pretty good early punk album. Production is a little rough but works in the albums favor probably won't return to it but not bad at all!

Cool - writing the blueprint for many bands to follow.

Raw Power, baby

Raw and beautiful. 4/5
