Legendary stooges album Great vocal performance Punk asf
This is a classic
I find punk a bit too slapdash and raw for my taste, but this is excellent: it's got the energy and attitude of punk together with some really great guitar licks and rhythms. I forget sometimes that the US garage rock that inspired punk is musically much more accomplished.
Great guitar solos sprinkled throughout and music which is fun to revisit.
Will be listening to both mixes and going with the highest rating between the two. BOWIE MIX: Boy, this is a great album. NOW I see why people like The Stooges. Heavy, angry, and musical. I do think it fades a bit in the end, and I can understand people's issues with the Bowie mix -- it certainly makes Raw Power less raw. IGGY MIX: Okay so, turns out there isn't as much of a difference as I thought. I see the arguments for both sides: one is more musical, one is more visceral; one is less exciting, the other is less listen-able. I think they're both good. I probably prefer this version of "Search and Destroy." Fave tracks: - Search and Destroy - Gimme Danger - Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell - Penetration - I Need Somebody
Excellent album. Superb energy throughout as exemplified by the bristling opening track ‘Search and Destroy.’ Also liked the few slower tracks such as the brooding ‘Gimme Danger.’ Love that it was produced by Bowie. I can understand why it wasn’t more of an immediately massive commercial hit, given when it was released, and also why it became such a template for the punk movement a few years down the line.
Good old fashioned punk! It’s always welcome.
I have a soft spot for Iggy. Always loved it.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I loved it. Any time I've previously listened to Iggy and the Stooges, I've wanted to like it and come away wondering what the big deal is, but this time around something clicked. The songs are stronger and better produced (thank you David Bowie, though I think thats owed more to Iggy reissuing it because I read that the original suffered from specifically poor fidelity, which perversely may be part of its appeal) than the first two Stooges albums. It sort of feels like the bridge between the Doors and the Stones and the Ramones, Blondie, etc. Great energy for rock and roll, and has more melody and catchiness than I expected, while still being aggressively in your face. This album makes you want to grab a guitar and go to your friends garage and thrash around, I can see how it influenced everyone from Kurt Cobain to Morrissey to RHCP.
plain damn good album! the influence that this album - and the stooges in general - had on so many bands is clear to see.
This is a very raw, punky album. For everything it lacks in polish, it has in spirit and energy. Nothing here is too technical, but it's enjoyable enough. I can see how this influenced punk and all it's related genres with its primal snarl. It has the tunes and hooks to support its loud sloppiness, resulting in an excellent and genre-defining album.
Dirty, raw, gritty and brilliant. The first true punk album. I wasn’t around when the album was released but I imagine it would have been a mind blowing thing to hear for the first time. Might be Iggys crowning glory. 35 minutes of pure brilliance. Can hear the influence it had on Marilyn Mason on I Need Somebody.
Raw open youthful rebellion put to music. I love it.
Rad. I wish it was a little rawer and more powerful, but I can’t blame them, it was a little early for that. What I like best about this album is the hooks laden all over these songs. Nearly every tune is memorable in some way. It’s a classic. One point subtracted for being just a little scattered. Still, must-listen #264.
"...A load of trashy old noise..." But what a wild load it is. Iggy took what Jim Morrison did and turned it up to 11. The music is heavy, lo-fi, and raw. I was familiar with the typical Stooges songs that everyone knows, "No Fun", "I Wanna Be Your Dog", and "Search and Destroy" - the rest of this album shows off the same kind of jams. I haven't had a chance to listen to the earlier two stooges records yet, but this one is definitely an experience worth the 1001 records you must hear.
Not my favorite Stooges album. Fun House is where it's all happening for me. That's where Iggy and the boys really hit their psycho-primitive stride. James Williamson's guitar-playing is probably better than Ron Ashton's, technically, but overall sound is more generically "rock" than on the two previous albums. Also, the lyrics don't have the debauched deadpan irony of the later ones Iggy wrote with Bowie. Still...it's the Stooges! It's like a hamburger; you have to really work to screw it up.
Title of the album says it all. Penetration stood out, but liked it all. 4/5
this album goes so hard for 19fucking73, jesus
Raw in your face dirty rock n roll it’s a fun trip
A classic album which paved the way for punk.
Iconic, although it loses a point for sounding a bit too thin and reedy as a studio album
Quick and rough, a lot of fun
Strong 4
Loved the guitar work in this album
Classic punk rock.
I enjoyed this. I think to really appreciate this album, you have to be young and drunk and reckless, but nonetheless it's still enjoyable from here in my suburban bedroom.
I feel like Funhouse gets all the attention, but I like Raw Power so much more. The title track, "Search and Destroy," and "Gimme Danger" are all great. This is what I hear in my head when I think of the Stooges. And goddamn right.
Wait... I really liked this. Iggy is one of those names I've always heard but never really checked out. My favorite parts of this album remind me of my favorite parts from Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. Gimme Danger also really captivated me and stuck out as a clear contemporary influence on Patti Smith. The growly vocal thing he does in songs like Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell is interesting I guess but I don't really like how it sounds. Another favorite was I Need Somebody
This is insanely good. The only thing that really bothers me, are the several various mixes and versions that all sound kinda bad. Some mixes on YouTube fix this issue though. 9/10
The title says it - it's pretty raw, but you can feel the power. Reminds me of The Velvet Underground, but probably a bit harder and rougher.
Has stood the test of time. Raw Power is what it is. The Iggy mix is better
Classic proto punk. Menacing, raw and powerful.
I was listening to an inferior version of this Iggy record for sure, this album is fierce and raw and the mix I had was not Has upped it to a low 4 for me with the first two tracks standing out
Iggy är verkligen otrolig frontman som lyfter helheten.
Gillar man inte Iggy Pop så gillar man inte musik.
The invention of garage rock. Everything thinks they can play it. This record proves it’s harder than it sounds.
Great album, really enjoyed this one.
Album is great to run to, energetic with a not too fast beat. I like the edginess, but the songs can be too similar.
Pretty great songs, absolutely awful recording/mixes. Both Bowie and Iggy’s mixes are atrocious. But a great relationship was birthed between the two and they went on to make like 5 albums together in Berlin in a very short amount of time. I’d give this 4.6, in all truth.
I like this, production isn’t great. But the songs are. Definitely ‘raw’ - listened to walking to Liverpool street station after Lucia left on the Sunday
Aw yeah, early punk rock! Even if they went more rocker on the one, I just love the ‘tude, the energy, the rebelliousness. A tight 30 minutes of fun
Pretty good. It feels like a transition from the 60s hard rock to pure raw punk. Enjoyed it but it's not quite a 5 for me.
Pretty good and I can hear how much it influenced a lot of the indie punk bands to come out of the 90s and early 2000s.
Reminds me of going to shows in dive bars.
Great opener, classic and a great vibe. Really dig it at first, the energy carries the album. I got a bit bored by the back end but I can see how important and influential this was. Will listen again.
Search and Destroy 4.4 Gimme Danger 4.6 Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell 4 Penetration 4.3 Raw Power 4.1 I Need Somebody 4.3 Shake Appeal 4 Death Trip 3.5 Score: 4.15
One day I'll fully get it
This is some grungy, stripped-down rock. It's almost too basic. That said, I can see how it informed later acts tremendously. Not my favorite offering by Iggy, but highly worth the listen.
Pure punk! The Stooges are some of the originals and deserve to be on the list. Not great lyrics, but that’s not what punk is about. The energy makes this album! 5⭐️
Good
The guitar work is great, but Iggy’s performance feels overtly theatrical, which was clearly the point. It captures the chaos of its time, though it hasn’t aged gracefully to modern ears used to the “authenticity” era. The record carries a distinct vibe of its era, both shaped by it and probably helping to shape it in future. Second half of the album felt little bit more refined in some way and the references sounds more clear. I am not sure if that was intentional or not. 4 (mostly for the era defining qualities and uncompromised style) 3 (personally and without context)
Listened to the Iggy Mix on Spotify, enjoyed it
In terms of enjoyment this was a 3. However, due to its influence, on punk especially, imma give it a 4. I love the guitar sound they got going on in this. Iggy's voice and performance at large is, once again, not really doing anything for me but that's the way it goes. I really don't think this album is that special if you listen to it in a vacuum but of course we don't live in one so I feel it's unfair to rate one as such. Count your blessings Iggy.
Can I give the album cover 10 stars? ::swoon:: Some great jams on here. The Stooges are legendary.
Awesome album full of energy. Much prefer the Iggy mix to the Bowie mix; it's much more in your face and powerful and the bass sounds fantastic. Favourites: Search and Destroy Gimme Danger Raw Power
Better than I was expecting. I know Gimme Danger from Monster Magnet's cover of it - great song, either version.
I have this, I do remember being underwhelming by the Stooges. So time for a re-listen. Don't love the muddy mix but still packs a punch. 4 Heard before? Yes Owned: No: 28/105 (26%) Will I get? Maybe a better version
Fire album. Listened to the "Iggy Mix" and "Bowie Mix". Sorry, Iggy, I prefer the Bowie Mix.
Amazing punk album with kick-ass guitars. Pre-Berlin Iggy rocks like an angry teen with no future, but can also turn into a Tom Waits-like crooner with tracks like "I Need Somebody". Not a perfect album, but I had a ton of fun listening. Great music to get drunk and piss on your asshole neighbor's car. 7/10
Awesome, barely a flaw on this album. Super garage vibes! I just learned the current version was remixed in the 90s because Bowie apparently did a messy job at first, which probably made the album even rawer. On the commute, it makes me wanna smash everything and hate every bit of pop, a very similar feeling than with hardcore punk. So urban and trashy!
Good old school rock
Really liked the instrumentation but it was difficult for me to get past the clipping.
The guitars are great, but I don't find myself drawn to the rest of the music (lyrics, beats, etc).
I didn't know that Moe, Larry and Curly were in a band! Was Shemp their roadie? ★★★★
search and destroy!
Definitely some top tier bangers on here. Some kind of meh stuff too. Probably tied for 2nd to me for Stooges lps. Favs Search and Destroy, Shake Appeal and Gimme Danger. I really hate the piano in the song Raw Power.
Basically the definition of punk.
Come for the high octane, stay for the weird stufff
Yeeeees
High energy album! Haven't heard of The Stooges previously and haven't listened to much with Iggy Pop.
I actually thought I wasn't going to like this one but actually really enjoy it. 4 stars.
Iggy mix for the win. Hadn't realized What's the Story is basically a rip off of this album. Really doing the history of punk with The Sonics and then this album. Bonus star for the trend-setting influence of this album.
Search and Destroy is a song that kept with me since the first time I heard it when I was a little kid. Just raw power
Pretty good. The album title perfectly describes the energy of The Stooges. Standout songs: Raw Power, Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell. Love the bluesy sound of I Need Somebody. Down and dirty rock 'n' roll.
Super cool. Truly had no idea this existed. Some of the sounds feels cliche, but I realize looking at the release date, this is only because so many later bands copied them. Listened to both the Iggy Mix and the Bowie Mix, and I might go back and listen to the 50th anniversary legacy edition too.
Had to give it two listens, takes some getting used to. BUT i really enjoyed it 4 stars
Soft 4. Not entirely my vibe for a typical day, but definitely see this as a core part of punk history that is pretty fun to listen to.
This was such a fun album to listen to, it went by in a breeze. What surprised me was the guitar playing. There were some very simplistic, but genius parts. It's a 4/5, I've definitely heard better, as far as this style of music goes, but it's a great album nontheless.
Raw power indeed
Must have lacerated the ears of people thinking even Led Zeppelin was too loud and obnoxious. I mean this as a compliment.
I didn't know Iggy had a nice voice on some tracks
Not bad
This is cool. Heavy, dirty, raw. Love it.
Man… Raw Power is like, if your brain got punched by lightning in leather pants. Iggy just screams at your soul, and the guitars sound like they're melting the air. It's chaos, but like... beautiful chaos, ya know? Kinda makes you wanna knock over a lamp and then hug it. Wild, messy, perfect for freaking out on the couch.
Great album, super early punk rock and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Iggy is usually great and this is a great example of why.
Lives up to the title for damn sure. The guitar work here is as bedrock to subsequent punk/alternative bands as Robert Johnson was to the classic rock bands. The first two tracks are perfection, the rest is good though I do feel they get a tad lazy with the songcraft later on and sound at times like they’re caving to the mistaken impression a lot of people had they were a freak or novelty act. The best moments of this album show this band was in fact as serious as a Heart Fulla Napalm.
I wasn't prepared to like this album as much as i did. I know that Iggy Pop and this bad are considered the originators of punk, but I thought there were influences of all different types of music in here. you heard some classic punk rock guitar riffs, but then some guitar sounds that felt like they were from the 50s. at one point the vocals called to mind Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. just a fun listen
Has any album every been as perfectly encapsulated in the title as this one is? It's certainly raw, very powerful, and just overall a fun listen. Pivotal in the development of punk rock and really like very few other things that existed in 1973. Some slower Doors-esque moments that are still good, but when this goes it goes hard, and it takes off right from the outset. Iggy was a front man that broke the mold and I think this somehow captures almost a live energy in the studio. A monumental and influential rock record and I loved it.
Liked it more than anticipated!
Raw power has lots of aggression and charisma, serving as a deeper cut yet standout gem in Iggy Pop and the stooges discography
I really liked this. I understand the hives now
Iggy is an acquired taste but this is some pretty good proto punk. I listened to the original Bowie mix
Raw and powerful 🤣
Pretty fun album, especially considering the era.
Rokkiklassikko tämäkin! Hyvää jyrinää.
Energy is a hell of a drug. This album isn’t really deep. It can get repetitive and the production is a little grimy. But this is a case where I can say “who gives a fuck?”. This shit’s hard for 1973 and it’s easy to see how this was an influence for so many other acts to come. It’s raw power indeed. Favorite track: Search and Destroy Other hits: Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell, Penetration, I Need Somebody, Death Trip
Messy, chaotic, and pretty fun the whole way through. Definitely rough around the edges, but that’s part of the charm. I actually liked this a lot.
Nahh this cooks. This is exactly as disgusting and sloppy as any proto-punk rager of an album ought to be - raw, barely-produced, and nothing but shouts of rage and instrumentals seething with malice. I'm excited to check out the Iggy mix as well.
8/10 Favourite: Search and Destroy Least Favourite: None
Even remastered it still sounds grimy and dirty, which is good.
Surprised by this. I need to read more about the mixing drama, but I loved the Iggy mix
Fucking unbelievable that this came out in 1973
Cool, reminds me of a lot of 80s stuff i like but way older
I listened to all of the Iggy version and some of the Bowie version. What strikes me the most is how the Bowie version has some early goth/new wave sounds and production. The Iggy version is very straightforward punk with a garagey kind of sound, and I enjoy it, but found the Bowie version a little more intriguing. Both fun.
Sounds so sleazy. Love it
So much power!
Ok, this slams. A little Ramones, a little Hives.
Maybe it was my workday, but I enjoyed this on a Wednesday afternoon
This is filthy rock, but I like it. Overall I prefer the self titled debut and Funhouse as complete albums. There are some great songs on this album with Raw Power and Gimmie Danger being two of them. Search and Destroy is just epic.
It's shocking that this was made in 1973 - the enormous influence it had on so much music that came afterwards is clear. Every garage band should aspire to this sort of raw energy; it shows how working with a limited sonic pallette dosn't mean sacrificing interest. Despite its rawness, I find a surprising amount of balance on the record.
I do like to think about Iggy Pop wriggling around in hot pink pants and no shirt smeared in peanut butter growl-singing “peneeeTRaaaaation”
I always forget how much of what used to feel "hard" or "aggressive" is actually quite palatable to my soft ears. This was lovely.
Man I love James Williamson‘s guitar work and songwriting on this. I haven’t listened to it in a while, it’s more of an elevated garage rock sound than I remembered. I thought it would be more glam
Guitars > Vocals on this one, and I like Iggy's vocals.
Just read the History of Punk book. One of the best punk albums out there. I prefer the Bowie mix to the iggy mix on the 50th anniversary release
Really rough mix can be hard to listen to especially Search and Destroy. Cool proto-punk album. Favourite is I Need Somebody.
Far ahead of the curve. Incredible album
Raw and dirty sounding rock, the way it’s meant to sound! Search&destroy and Raw Power are mainstays. However, 3/8 songs are mid (Tracks 4, 6 and 8), which means it’s only a strong 4 stars
Iconic
incredibly solid rock album
Solid
Best Song: Search and Destroy After a couple of dud albums in a row, this was a welcome surprise. I've never paid much mind to The Stooges, or Iggy Pop. I knew Lust for Life and I Want to be your Slave and that was it. This was how punk is supposed to be done before it ends up being brutalized by a bunch of copycats. I just wish the mix wasn't so subpar. 4/5.
Some fine punk, inspires to go make some music yourself.
raw
At the time, Raw Power didn’t break big — too raw, too chaotic, too ahead of its moment. But with hindsight, it’s crystal clear: this is the blueprint. It’s unpolished, feral, and loud. I get why it didn’t chart then, but I also see exactly why Iggy Pop became the icon he is now. Bowie helped shape the mix, but Iggy is the energy. Plain and simple: lo-fi, bad-ass punk rock.
great, truly raw
Good album
Not as powerful as Fun House (even with Iggy's mix, I still prefer Bowie's mix) but it's still hard rocking, noisy and messy as hell. This band knew how to make a dangerous band sound dangerous.
This album is pure bomb! Energetic, dark and chaotic, as noisy proto-punk should be.
This is one of these highly influential records that I do enjoy. It's got good energy and title is hits the nail on the head: it's a raw rock record. Strong proto-punk record, but not in my all-time favorites.
In Raw Power you hear the beginnings of what may Iggy's solo efforts so good.
Love the album. The energy! Awesome album.
I feel like this must be the most obvious pre-punk album, which totally sounds like it and probably wildly influenced it. His vocal inflections are a bit more bluesy than later punk stuff, but guitar wise in most places, especially the third one, it’s just a quintessential punk song. I also really like how there are quieter songs on here, with different instruments, like pianos and stuff, which I guess you also wouldn’t really find in punk music. I can also see how this influenced the more arty side of glam rock and hard rock. It is a bit less psychedelic than the first 2 albums, which I thought was one of the best parts, but I suppose this is good for different reasons. Obviously Iggy Pop’s personality is unrivalled and he’s a total legend. Favourite songs: all Overall around 8/10
Назва альбому дуже відповідає його змісту
Solid punk rock. Iggy's not a top 20 artist for me but probably top 100, and his work with the Stooges can be heard through the decades in countless other acts. Love this.
Yeah this’ll play
Proto-Punk, loads of energy with a tight production compared to Fun House. Still prefer the previous album more though. Great listen all the same.
While their first album was a great debut I really think it could have been left off this list. Funhouse and Raw Power way are better records.
It was not bad. probably would not listen again but I didn't hate it. A bit random and not catchy I guess historical value is high
Yes, this album is kind of basic; yes, the production is atrocious, but you can feel the raw power (get it?) even despite all of that. It's just so fun and energizing in both vocals and instruments. It's pretty simple and unpolished but so freaking engaging. The second half didn't quite leave up to the hype the fist half brought, but as a whole, this album is still great.
I fair amount of the other music I’ve heard by Iggy left me quite underwhelmed, with me not really getting the fuss. There have certainly been the odd songs here and there that I enjoyed, but overall it just hadn’t done much for me. Then I heard this album. It’s great fun from the beginning to the end, with the sound being aptly defined by the title of the album. The raw energy of it all easily took me in, and I didn’t particularly want it to end. This album is pretty banging.
Would not buy
Raw Power is a great album, though I still have a soft spot for The Stooges’ debut. That said, I was looking forward to giving this one a proper listen today. My first impression might have been off — this is a fantastic record, packed with energy, aggression, and some truly brilliant guitar riffs. Overall, it’s an easy and enjoyable listen. Raw Power delivers exactly what its title promises: raw, aggressive music bursting with energy. Favourite track: Gimme Danger – an outstanding song with a killer riff, though honestly there are plenty of contenders. Least favourite track: Penetration – just a bit too grim for my taste. Album artwork: An iconic Iggy Pop cover that perfectly matches the music’s intensity.
geweldig album ... paar hoogtepunten , paar mindere (maar GEEN dieptepunten)
Iggy Pop remains one of the greatest frontmen of all time, and The Stooges absolutely live up to the album’s title here. Raw Power is gritty, unpolished, and hits like a punch to the face in the best way possible. “Search and Destroy” is still a banger, and it was actually my first introduction to The Stooges back in high school thanks to the Tony Hawk franchise. The rest of the album keeps that same reckless energy, proving why this band has been so influential to punk and rock in general. It is chaotic, loud, and unapologetic, exactly what you want from The Stooges.
Didn't know Search and Destroy was a cover by these guys. And hearing the beginnings of punk this early is nice
I listened to the Bowie mix. Not sure how to rate, knowing there's another version.
Was good wasn’t up this genre today though. Will probably listen to it again some other day
This so clearly connects the dots from Rock to Punk. Shame it sounds like the mics in the studio were mounted in a bucket of water on the loud tracks. Whatever compression they applied decimated the sound. This would have been a heck of a show to catch live. If I was younger and angrier me, this would likely have been a 5. Older, calmer me, it's a 4.
The Stooges took their foundational brutality and sharpened it into something more focused yet equally vicious, crafting a template for aggressive rock that still sounds absolutely ferocious today.
Incredible album! Set the standard…
Loud and raucous. I can see why this album is referenced as an original punk type offering. Search and Destroy is a banger. Rough and ready and not something to listen to too often. Very much liked this 1.
At first, I saw Iggy, Punk Rock, and heard lackluster lyrics, and thought this would be a disaster. To my pleasant surprise, it reminded me of my high school partying days in the 1970s, and I never lived in the '70s. Favorite Track: "Death Trip".
I've never really listened to The Stooges before, despite hearing about them and knowing who Iggy Pop is. I hear a lot of influence here on other artists that I like. It's almost like what you get if you mix George Thorogood and AC/DC. I will never listen to "Seek and Destroy" by Metallica the same again. The song "Search and Destroy" from this album has a very early Metallica vibe in the later part of the song.
A visceral thrill ride. The antithesis of, and antidote for, the George Harrison album that preceded it, which had the instrumental proficiency, melodies production, technical elements and polish but was, to me, fundamentally inert. Raw Power is all rough edges and jettisoning of technical elements in favor of energy and propulsiveness. Only reason not to give it a 5 is that its only the 3rd album.
4.5 / 5 - Has possibly the best first line on a Song 1, Side 1 of any album, and is also one of the most aptly named albums of all time. The influence of Raw Power is obviously far and wide for the future of punk, but this easily holds up on its own legs with door-blasting energy beyond just being an "influential album." I had never listened to it all the way through, and I listened to it 4 times in a row. Rounding down only because it's early in the reviews and I need to leave space at the top.
Pretty good pre-punk kinda sound. Borderline 3.5/4.
Some misses but where it hits it fucking bangs
lo mas flashero de este disco sucede cuando lo escuchas sabiendo el año en el q salió, 1973, el año de Dark Side of the Moon, Band on the Run, Houses of Holy y Selling England by the Pound, pero este disco esta adelantadisimo, suena crudo, salvaje, vulgar y rebelde prediciendo lo q vendría unos 4 o 5 años después; dicho esto, la portada la baja
Locura
I’m not much of an Iggy fan. Solid album.
Pretty cool ik a guy named after iggy pop
A very raw (pun intended) recorded that clearly laid the groundwork for punk rock to burst into the music scene a few years later. People like Henry Rollins and David Bowie have always sung Iggy’s praises and now I know why. Excellent record.
Good listen.
IGGGGGGGY POP. Lets do it. Track1 the Ramones get too much credit for birthing punk music. The Stooges were pure punk rock 5-7 years before the Ramones. This track is fantastic. Track 2 The most listened to track of the album. It slows things down without losing its power or aggression. Such a cool track. The guitar is phenomenal. Track speeds thing back up. The guitar really drives this track. Track 4 is a bit slower but has a really dark tone to it. Love it. Track 5 is the title track. Pure punk rock. Incredible Track 6,7,8 are all pretty much the same. Iggy's great voice and loud aggressive guitars. This album rock. Short but sweet and 100% a foundational album in the history or rock n roll. 4/5
Tis good, better in my memory tho
Third album in The Stooges' discography and third Stooges album on the list. Still stellar quality and really seems to capture the magic of live 70s music. Leans a bit more into more generic hard rock genre than I care for.
Raw Power still sees The Stooges explore both their punk and ballad sides. It’s deep, aggressive and most of all raw - it sounds almost like a live record at times.
Good solid punk album
Quick listen. Liked it overall, but it did seem to switch vibes between tracks from being more punk and more of just a classic rock sound (almost AC/DC like at times).
Classic Rock with punk elements, overall ok, pleasant but nothing mind-blowing... Still enjoyable, 3.5 stars...
The Bowie mix seems like a diluted cocktail while the Iggy mix is straight up a shot of gin. Definitely prefer the latter for its more jagged edge.
It seems like a voice like Iggy's needs a production and sound that is just as raw and dirty.
Contains what it says on the tin. Prefer their earlier stuff to listen to, but history, and indeed the future, created in the making of this.
Nice album. See you soon, Iggy!
Cool punk album. Iggy maakt niet echt slechte muziek denk ik dan. 3.8
v good
PoV: you are a angry but tired young non-binary that loves a 80s musician who has a special fondness toward this certain shirtless American dork and you got his album today (while also obsessing over the album’s producer) you played the bowie mix. you got a bit angrier by the raw proto-punk music. and wait. the iggy mix is better, as they said. you put on the iggy mix. its less sluggish, you told yourself, and now, prepare to experience the raw power. its really... raw. anyway. 4/5
classic punk rock!!!!
The album lives up to the name. Iggy is absolutely fearsome on this record. Theres a ferocity to it that is pretty much unparalleled for the time and some time after honestly. I certainly consider it in it's own bag of punk and garage rock flavors, there's like a proud, fun, rowdiness to the playing one this one too. Iggy sounds like a wild animal half the time. The contrast to searing guitar rifts are often met with very sweet countermelodies and that seems to just be how The Stooges operate. Gimme Danger, Penetration for instance. Blues injected punk rock animals. Genuinely not sure how else to describe the sounds here. I could see how this is like the DNA for what acts like Tom Waits and the Cramps would go on to do. It starts with blues. There's also a bit of like, the birth of a psychobilly sound on this thing even if it largely remains proto-punk and blues infused. Talk about character.
I definitely prefer the Iggy Mix.
hell yeaaaa full energy throughout!!! iconic album!!
Very good
I know the album well but didn't know what I'd score it so listened again. The first half and the first 2/3 songs are amazing. The last few drag a little. Still a blast but not as good as their debut.
Iggy and the Stooges’ legendary Raw Power is certainly aptly named. The performances, energy, and production (more on that in a minute) of Raw Power makes it both crawl towards punk, and capture rock at its most exciting and unpredictable. This is compounded by the reputation Raw Power has due to the conditions of its creation: frankly it’s a miracle this got released at all. In short, the legend goes as such: David Bowie saw fit to get Iggy Pop's next album financed and released, and a few bizarre decisions later, as Bowie tells it, he had to mix the album in a single, day long session from only three tracks (reportedly, Iggy's vocals, and the lead guitar both had their own track, and everything else was on a single track). Even with the talents of Bowie, this resulted in a mix that sounds raw and shrill, but it ended up capturing the album pretty well. It's also worth noting that in 1997, Iggy Pop was brought in to remix the album himself for a reissue, and the result is a mix wherein everything is as loud as possible, to the point of clipping, but the low end is a lot better. Consequentially, there is no definitive mix of Raw Power. Bowie's mix captures some real lightning in a bottle, but he seems to have left the bass behind, and Pop's mix fixes the bass, and has a little more impact, but it loses some of the charm of the original, and maybe more importantly, it has a dismal dynamic range, the whole album has the faders jammed as far as they'll go, and it proudly displays its digital clipping. I think there are merits to both, and I would like to go on record to say that I think there is something beautiful about the fact that after 25 years of reflection, hindsight, and experience in the professional recording industry Iggy Pop still seems to think that the best way to experience this is as loudly as physically possible, at all times, without relief. To discuss the music on here, it's sick as hell. Basically, this is just shy of 35 minutes worth of rock music threatening to fly off the handle at all times. There are two slower songs, but I wouldn't say they are filler, they're honestly pretty good, so this thing feels lean, not really a wasted minute. The rhythm section turns into a wall of noise, Pop shouts incoherently, and the guitar solos sputter inarticulately. It feels bold and chaotic, and like I said earlier, exciting. I love this thing, and while I'm not giving it a 5 yet, I think there may be room to grow.
Hørte Iggy mix. Stygghøyt og overraskende friskt. Ville ikke gjettet at albumet er såpass gammelt som 1973.
This album is intense, especially for 1973. Every bit is fueled by pure adrenaline, you can almost see Iggy trashing around frantically on stage. It never gets boring either, even the slower songs have a primal intensity to them that makes it really fun to listen to! OG punk rock!
Ok, well, I guess I like Iggy Pop? This is the second album from/with him, and they've both been great. In my head, I think I was conflating him with Frank Zappa, whom I distain.
loved it
electric guitar go brrrrr
Da prendere anche solo per aggiungere qualcosa di Iggy in collezione. Carico ed energico, come il capo. Stooner rock all'ennesima potenza.
perfect title for anything Iggy does. One of the truest to himself and his idea/version of the art of music. Love this guy, not sure why - I think he has that effect on many.
Has a cover ever represented what's inside much less the genre writ large? A couple stars or the cover alone. The first two albums are much more interesting/influential. Raw Power is just that - RAW POWER. The entire album is in the red in a quest to translate the visceral energy of the band/Iggy into the recorded world. Hard to argue that doesn't succeed. Another star for that. Two more for the trip of Search and Destroy/Gimme Danger/Raw Power. Not a perfect album but masterful in executing its intention.
3.5 stars
Very good mix of Punk and Rock’n Roll His vocals annoyed me quite a bit and was pretty repetitive
Bit of a trailblazer our iggy
Protopunk at its finest. Iggy and the Stooges delivered a sound like The Rolling Stones sniffing glue with the Ramones. Absolute solid album. 4/5
Let's take our shirts off and jump about to iggy
Aggressive, set the blueprint for future bands.
I liked it. It was pretty brainless and fun. 8/10
An undeniably influential album that cultivated punk and hard rock. It would be impossible to minimize its influence on bands to come.
They need to release a version of this that's half the Bowie mix and half the Iggy Pop mix, I can't listen to either without thinking about what the other one does better
liked it. not much else to say
Iggy Pop is cooler than you. He's also cooler than me.
Great album. You can really hear Bowie's influence in the production and mix.
I saw Iggy Pop at the HFStival at RFK Stadium in July 1993 (RIP, WHFS!). He was dreadful. He jumped around the stage and screamed a lot. That's all I really remember of his performance. The kids today would call it cringe. I liked this more than I thought I would. It's full of testosterone and is perfectly named. For being released in 1973, it holds up rather well.
Is this the OTHER record that didn't do so well but everyone who bought it formed a band? Still holds up.
This album sounds horrible--in the best possible way. No one would intentionally go into producing an album to have it end up sounding this way. Yet it sounds perfect in all of its unbalanced, lo-fi chaos. Long live Iggy.
A great album and the influences on others clear to hear
I was intrigued to listen to this to see what pre-solo Iggy was like with Stooges. And I was not disappointed. Quite raw and less manicured but a great listen. Going to have to venture into more Iggy / Stooges music.
A great sound and some really catchy songs. Let down in places by the vocals.
Quite timely given I saw Iggy Pop at the weekend. That was a brilliant show; he has a great new band, now with a brass section (didn’t expect that) which has reinvented/reimagined his back catalogue somewhat. So it’s with slightly rose tinted spectacles I listen to this album. My main thought is that the production is terrible as it just doesn’t convey what I imagine these guys sounded like live at all. That being said, it’s sharp and dark in places (I think Iggy is better dark), and it’s a good listen. ‘I need somebody’ the stand out to me. It’s probably a 3 or 3.5, but for a 78yr old to do such a cracking show, let’s bump this up a mark.
She iggy on my pop till I stooge
Probably the best stooges album we've had, no really long padding track like the other two. Didn't have any standout tracks but the quality was generally a lot better, sounded a little bit more like modern punk/garage rock. Could tell when the album ended and skipped on to a random Iggy pop song and I didn't like it as much, so overall good stuff.
The album title is pretty descriptive - rather over the top. Penetration was my favourite (the Iggy version, the Bowie version does away with the doorbell-like synth running through the track - almost like The Doors). Good fun as usual from Iggy and his bandmates. Iggy Pop has been a bit of a revelation via this list - I was greatly looking forward to this, and whilst it doesn't have the oomph of the start of Fun House, it is tonally considerably more cohesive and of similar quality to List for Life.
Don't think I've heard this album before. Was as expected, raw, dirty, energetic, proto punk. Really good. I listened to both the Iggy mix and the Bowie mix of the album. Think the Iggy mix suits it better, but enjoyed both. Search and destroy, your face is going to hell and raw power were my favourites 4
Good noise.
Nice
Rock and roll ecstasy
The Stooges sound so cool. My favorite moments are the restrained grooves with that piano. Add Iggy's electric energy and its magical. I do feel like all Iggy albums need to be just like 15 minutes long. On another note, this is another album that feels dumb to listen to digitally in an office. Aggressively daydreaming about those early live shows. Also another artist/group that seemed above the 'trying to be cool' factor. Also a group that's hard to praise too much cuz drugs 😅
One of the best. But not the best.
Lever opp til tittelen.
The title says it all.
найс.
I fw the stooges
First time hearing this album for whatever reason. I'm familiar with both The Stooges and Iggy, but it's interesting to me to hear this young Iggy. I dig it!
Dirty and amazing.
I listen to both the original Bowie mix and 1997 Iggy mix the App lead me to. Despite the fact that there is a vast difference between the two, I really don't really prefer one over the other. I might give a slight Edge to the Bowie mix just because it's it's brighter and I can hear the the guitar solos a little bit better, where the Iggy mix feels a little bit more muffled but the riffs come out better. Still, the plain fact is they both sound like crap and vastly different ways. I don't know if it's the sonics that keep it from being a five to me or the fact that it's really not a five-star album but it is a really good album. Honestly, I don't think it's the sonics really that hurt this album at all. In fact I think the more raw it feels the better... I mean it is *Raw Power* anyway. (9.3/10) ★★★★½
I don't know if this is my favorite Stooges album, but I think those first three are all great. It's just pure rock and roll energy. Plenty of great songs here -- "Search and Destroy", the title track, "Gimme Danger", "Shake Appeal". The production could be better, but it's a minor complaint. 4.5 stars.
A very rocktastic, druggypunkyglammymetaltastic bomb blast helmed by the wicked talents of guitarist James Williamson and the scuzziest sublimiest slipshoddiest Bowie mix. Iggy does an ok amped up Jagger impersonation for the most part but the music itself is so dangerous, crazed, beautifully messy and chaotic and the wiry vicious sprawl of guitar heroics are so fierce and yummily jolting. At its best it’s properly exhilarating but the album is very uneven despite the short length. For example an ingenious intro song like Search And Destroy is followed up by a relative dud such as Gimme Danger and the patchiness continues throughout. Worth searching for and not destroying off this list though. 3.5 rounded up to 4.
Boy what an insane 35 minutes. You can tell its real, raw punk by the way the guitars play the same riffs throughout the song. Really though, I miss this kind of iconoclastic music. Punks like Iggy here showed the world that the beauty of the world can be found in the grime and the muck too.
Kom tre sekunder inn i første låta før æ tenkte «Å, nu skjønne æ poenget med The Hives». Evig ung og evig kul, gode greier.
its nothing mind blowing but still really enjoyable. really like how lo-fi this is. the shitty mix give this an interesting vibe. feel like i listening to this live at a small underground show.
Nice rock
Hell yeah. I love these layers of loud, messy, fuzzy guitars and feedback. The energy of this album is fantastic. The Stooges get all the style points too: great album title, great album cover, great band name. 4.5
I liked it!! esp Shake Appeal and a couple others. I wish it were recorded in higher quality but the music itself was very good.
I really liked this. I feel like similar sounding albums have come up on this list that just didn't land with me, and I couldn't tell you what made this one different. But it was very fun to listen to. Not long enough to overstay its welcome either
Long as hell but pretty crazy
Fav: Search And Destroy Least Fav: Penetration Loved the album but yeesh, you can really tell that they mixed it in 1 day. That out of sync drum in penetration was particularly noticeable
Definitely proto punk. Overall enjoyed but enjoyed the algorithm songs after more
Great frontrunner of punk rock, though the band's third album is more heavily hard rock influenced than their previous ones. The original production wasn't good because they had to it hastily in a day. Still it is one of the most important rock albums of the 70s.
Better than I expected. The guitar player was surprisingly good.
Lives up to its name. A very important album for punk and rock music.
Goes hard as fuck, but not quite as hard as Funhouse. The stuff about how fucked up the mix is was interesting - they used three out of 24 tracks and when they brought David Bowie in to mix it he was like "What do you expect me to do here?"
Weird me one. As in I was weird. I'm a diabetic and was a bit low the whole short sweet little runtime. But it's good. I've heard most of it if not all of it before. It's a classic. The starting point if u have to put a definitive point on that of punk. Come on? What else do u want. It's a bit simple and that might be It's only thing but it's taking from bubblegum bullshit of the previous era. I do like bubblegum bullshit by the by. It's good. I'm happy. More punk for all please
I love feeling like a British drug addict

Back when i was in sixth form i worked weekends in Millets and there was another guy who worked there (i think his name was Paul) who was super into garage music, Detroit, and anything related to either. Once he heard that I liked the MC5 he started making me mix cassettes of stuff he thought I had to listen to and some key albums: the Dirtbombs, the Sonics, early Alice Cooper and a tape of Raw Power. It got a fair amount of listening and I still have a lot of love the album and the Stooges.
Nice mix of punk and Stonesy blues rock! A band I have always heard about but never took the time to listen to. Glad I did, this was enjoyable.
This was great. Very David Bowie meets Talking Heads meets Red Hot Chili Peppers. Four stars.
I love it when I get an album that I had in the before times. You know, before they were all free and you could just stream them out of the ether without having to make a trip somewhere and exchanging cash money.
Seminal Proto Punk album. The aggression in the music mixes with the Detroit style grooves.
The album starts off with: "I'm a street walking cheetah with a heart full of napalm" and that is basically a warning label. I've pretty much only heard songs of Iggy Pop's that were covered by other bands or used in commercials, so I was surprised at how gritty, raucous and punchy (and good) this album is. Aptly named title.
"Raw Power" is a very accurate title for this album. Gritty, old-time rock n roll...could close your eyes and imagine yourself hearing this at CGBG in the 70s.
This shit kicks ass. Cock 7
Forerunners of Punk Rock including Iggy Pop. Promoted by David Bowie.
very good
Proto-punk legend Iggy Pop and his Stooges really turn up the rock on this one. I don't know what else to say, this rules.
Ridiculous for its time. I wish they went on to make like 10 more amazing albums but from what I can tell they really petered off after this insanely influential trilogy
Dunno if I prefer the Bowie mix or the Pop one, but this album slaps regardless
Great fun. Loud and aggressive. More like this!
Starker Gitarren-Sound. Spannende Rock-Musik 4/5
Two Stooges albums on the trot. I really do like this band, and even though punk isn’t really my go-to genre, I like these better than most other bands of that style. I think you stick with the Stooges album you first get your teeth into, which for me was the debut. Still, Raw Power is a great listen and one I was happy to get so soon after the last Stooges record was served up.
I still have it.
Woah. This album is HEAVY. Iggy really doesn't pull any punches on this one. Great from front to back.
I thoroughly enjoyed honestly
Great great album- it certainly lives up to it's name. It's all about Iggy innit? What a force of nature..... Very professionally produced given the constraints of recording.
epic proto punk
Love it. Can hear how it has influenced so many (Pj Harvey, Nick Cave jump out at me). The only thing letting it down is the production. Bet this would have been fantastic live
Great album. Love iggy pop
Cut my teeth on this in my early years of being a punk rock fan, 4 stars
idk if I’m a fan of the “Iggy Mix” feels really flat. it’s a great album otherwise
Extremely crazy this came out in 1973. Sounds like it could come out this week.
Vocalist sounded like he cared and was definitely trying. Big fan.
Ya know, I've done nearly 350 of these albums now and every time I get fed a punk album it's absolutely horrible. This one was awesome. I loved the rawness of it. It was just well done. Played well, sung well. It was angry, but didn't feel angsty. Definitely one to revisit.
More to come- love the grimy energy
You know about Iggy Pop, that man is inescapable. 50 years later and this man is still acknowledged as one of the greats, but going into this, I had no idea what to expect. This is pure rock, shake your ass and do weird dance moves like that swimming dance people used to do in every movie. You know the one. Where they hold their nose and lower to the ground? That one. "Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell" is so danceable, to the point where you can be teleported to a shitty club where The Stooges are playing in your mind and it makes perfect sense. The piano crescendo with the guitar on "Penetration" is awesome. I already knew/love "Shake Appeal," too. So, this whole album is groovy as shit!
3.5 rounded up, iggy mix
That’s some 70s kick ass rock, that is. Raw, Power(ful), simple. (4.0*s)
Very nearly a 5 star because there are some fantastic songs on here and the overall vibe/energy is enjoyably raw. Despite being a short album I do feel a little fatigued towards the end. I listed to the Bowie mix since I've heard that is the better version and from the bit and pieces I sampled of the Iggy one I have to agree.
Probably The Stooges best collection of songs on any album. Their best sounding record, the first where you can feel the power of the rhythm section which adds depth to the venomous lyrics that Iggy delivers with a malevolence that's palpable. This album is a statement of purpose. That purpose being to show the world how loud and offensive rock and roll can/should be. 4.5 stars
Discourse surrounding this album has devolved into which mix is better: the Iggy mix or the Bowie mix? This is compounded by the fact that they were remastered in 2023 so now there's two(?) different version of each mix on top of numerous fan mixes and really there's no winning. So, I'm throwing my hat into the ring and listening to both back-to-back. Both mixes tend to have vocals at the front while the band is mixed a little back, though the Iggy mix is more consistent in this department. The band on the Iggy mix tends to gel a bit better while maintaining their own sound. The Bowie mix trashes all that, making the band sound flat in comparison. The only dynamics are in the more noticeable panning, but a less distinguishable EQ range. Is it more "raw" or "punk" as a result? I suppose, but it's still the same songs with worse packaging. Iggy mix should be the standard. Uh so the album itself is great! Streamlines a lot of the songwriting on Fun House to make it more straightforward garage rock songs. Easy blueprint for punk in its early development. I think I prefer the edge on Fun House more, but the guitar solos on Raw Power kill every time.
raw, raw power. loved it.
had no expectations, but omg this was so raw and just great!
The Stooges will always remind me of Dad. One morning before school he walked in to me bumping their first recorded and asked what the hell was playing. Those huge ass speakers were so loud. The raw punk still coming through on this album.
Love.
This isn't necessarily my genre but it was a fun listen
Did not know this album before and expected more. It is a nice punk/rock album but in my opinion not one of the big ones.
I think this should've been called Funhouse and Funhouse should've been named Raw Power. This is a fantastic fun record with many interesting layers whereas funhouse is a bit more in your face. 👍 if you agree.
Proto-punk masterpiece!
Iggy is great. This album slaps.
The album is just raw power, a unique mix of proto punk and hard rock. Will listen again. I'll give it 4 stars, as it is a 3.5 closer to a 4, than a 3.
icon for punk music for sure. I may prefer fun house or the passenger but lots of good energy on this one.
Finally, some good solid punk
Who would have thought that using a celesta on a raw and powerful album titled Raw Power would actually work like a charm?
Damn good guitarist, great fuzzy, gritty sound, jagged around the edges.
