Stand!

i just could not get behind this. i guess nothing was blatantly off but i just really did not vibe with the album. i can’t even remember liking a single song. can still respect the art though. 2/5.

I was like okay a 3, this is fine. Then track 7 hit and I was like nah. This is getting a 2. It just annoyed me and lasted way too long. Didn't like, sounds made me uncomfortable. The rest of thes songs were never better than meh, so I feel no pressure to give it a better rating than its weakest link.

I have head the band name before but couldn't give you a song name at all. Some of the song names sure are a sign of the time it was written. All that being said the album is a funk/soul album with a few pretty good songs a bunch of songs that makes me want to listen more to the genre. Just not this album or band. There is definitely great things happening in the songs, the brass and singing is really good. It just sort of falls flat for me a lot of the time.

They lost me once during the thirteen minute long sex machine, and then again during my brain. The instrumentals just didn’t hit for me. It was repetitive background music at best. But for the more active songs I could groove a bit, just not realllly my thing

The second track, holyyyy. This really was not my thing though at all. I couldn’t get with it, I didn’t find it fun, or entertaining, and certainly not meaningful or emotional. Or even really that quality. I can understand if this was maybe an influential record and that adding to its merit but it just didn’t do it for me. I will say though, I did groove with sex machine.

I see the appeal but Not a fan

Reading through the reviews; I feel like I'm missing something. I don't get it, and I don't like it. I thought I would. I'm sorry but this doesn't do it for me at all. I understand I'm in the minority, but I'm afraid it's a 2 for me.

That was definitely not for me. I appreciate the music as technically good but it just didn’t feel interesting at all to me. I’m so surprised by these overwhelmingly positive reviews and I feel like I’m missing something. Well, it’s not the first funk album I can’t get into.

The sound is clearly ahead of its time, and the highs are great, but for whatever reason I was underwhelmed.

Mouldy grandpa funk from the 60s with some supercharged phases but also muffled production, corny pocketful of posies pop melodies and vocals and some absolutely atrocious extended jamming which means that it doesn’t really stand up as a full decent album.

Do you like soul/funk music? Then this album is for you. The only thing I don´t like about this album is the lyrics. Everything else is good they have great beat, they have a great singer and the album cover is pretty cool. I would recommend this album just don´t look at the lyrics.

When I was 16, I took a school trip to France, and the one teacher bought by a crepe because he was impressed that a 16 year old knew 'I Want To Take You Higher' was performed by Sly & The Family Stone (which I knew only because I owned and loved Duran Duran's 'Thank You' album). Anyway, this is a bit too noisy at parts for my tastes. I much prefer Duran Duran. 'Everyday People' is a classic, though.

Gave this one an honest go, and there are some interesting things and a real feeling of time and place. It is chaotic at times. I think I would have loved it if I were around back then. Today…it is all over the place.

Blind album, know the artist and the hit. I'm not sure if I'm just in a bad mood but half this album was fin and the other half sucked. No flow and I was flipping between bopping and wanting to skip tracks.

Cool but clearly not my thang.

For the first half, it sounds like they had written a great album then accidentally released the first draft instead. Empty soundscapes, lyrics that seem like placeholders. Like a jam session, but produced, which means it doesn't have the charm an actual jam session has. The 13 minute long track is taking the mick. Then it hits the single versions. Why aren't these the only versions! They actually sound finished!

Late 60s funk. Pretty standard. Just not my thing. Some interesting instrumentals. Boring.

The instrumentals are clearly meant to be the highlight for Sly, and they are good in some parts, but I can’t say I’ll be returning to this album again.

Jarring at times and funky at other times. Thematically I thought it was all over the place. Musically I thought it was fine and pleasant to listen to. Definitely some recognizable songs here and there. Mid, but not to the level of some of the 3 stars we’ve had on the list thus far.

There’s a lot of funk here, but the times that the beat continuously repeats along with the length is what does it in for me. A couple good songs that could boost this to a three, but I don’t think it’s in that tier as a whole.

I like a few songs from Sly and the family Stone, so I was hoping this album would introduce me to some more. Unfortunately, that's not the case. I still like "I Want to Take You Higher" and "Everyday People", but I really didn't like the rest of the album. This will be a weird one to score.

I remember some of these songs as singles when I was a kid. The whole album has that thin late 60s production sound. Album was just okay for me.

My favourite line is: "there's a midget, standing tall." I don't like this album. Some grooves that sound cool but last 8 minutes too long. Just doesn't feel like a cohesive album. And the singles are strong. Meh and the family stone.

Starting off, I didn't think, "I bet this will turn into a Toyota commercial." But it did. I wouldn't imagine that would be the best song on a funk album. But it was. They picked the singles well, but this is otherwise a really noisy album for me, and I found it wholly unenjoyable.

This was fine, was hoping to like it better. The 13 minute jam Sex Machine was pretty dull. I liked the two unreleased tracks at the end of the album version on Apple Music. Their performance at Woodstock was excellent, and Hot Fun in the Summertime is a great track, from another album. Their greatest hits album is worth checking out.

Didn't really do too much for me

I wish I liked this more but it was kind of a bit tedious to listen to, especially the 14-minute Sex Machine.. I'm glad I listened to this record because it paved a lot of ways for what was to come in soul and rock and roll but I don't think it aged super well and sounds very much of its time.

Ok…disappointing to an extent. Thought I would like this better than I did.

If you’re familiar with any of their songs (which you are, because of commercials) you could consider yourself familiar with this album and go ahead and skip it, if you were toying with that idea. Unless you really like the song you sort of know, and then you might love this! I don’t know your heart.

I love me a brass section. I'm not a huge fan of this era of soul/funk music, it often sort of blends into the background like some good coffee shop jazz, which isn't here nor there. Reading the history, The Family Stone was the first ever integrated black/white band in rock history, which is sick. I can imagine this being a blast live, apparently they killed at Woodstock, and I believe it. The second half is just radio edits of the first half, I did find myself betting bored. Top songs: Stand! Solid funk/soul music from the late 60's. I recognize several of these songs. Everyday People the most familiar to me. My favorite line "..shady as a lady with a mustache" from Somebody's Watching You. Priceless. Can someone explain the lyrics from Sex Machine please.

Not as good as I remembered, pretty groovy in parts. Vocoder thing in Sex Machine is highly annoying.

Funk has a weird place with me, I sometimes enjoy it and sometimes i find it boring, jammy and meandering. I have never quite pinpointed what makes me feel either way. This one fell to the latter, if it is due to just my mood today or not i don't know. It sounds good just wasn't feeling it today. Some good some bad songs.

I'm not diggin' the vibe on this one. It has this uplifting "Come on everyone, let's all sing some effin' songs together! WOO! Come on, baby gurl!" vibe -- it gets seriously grating after a bit. I'm also sensitive to treble, trumpets, symbols and groovy ass piano/synth/organs. Some voices felt a bit shrill to me, too. That being said, I did recognize "You Can Make It If You Try", "Stand!" and "Everyday People", and recognize they're really nice songs. I just can't Stand! them for long periods of time. Ha. Super personal rating: 2/5 - "Nothing wrong with it, I'm just never going to listen to this album ever again."

I wanted to like this album a lot more than I did. I know why it's included in the 1001, but it just... didn't do anything for me. Like technically, it's great. Just not for me. It's very background for me, not one song really caught my attention or held it (minus the talk box on the second). Sing a simple song was probably my fav of the bunch. Also this may look like it has the same star rating as kraftwerk but I'd actually go back and give kraftwerk one star sooo....

I don't know why, but this album didn't catch much my attention, it's funk and i felt the vibe in some songs, but it's definitely not the best album i've listen.

I thought I was down with the funk. Turns out I straight up hate some of it (mostly the wailing vocal and guitars solos) and tolerate the rest.

Feel very wonky and iffy about this album didn't feel all to good

I generally like soul music, so I thought I should like this especially given the history. It didn't really hit the spot for me.

I see where the Jackson’s sound came from, and where Prince heard funky. Not my go to sound but I appreciate the music being so different from the end of the Beatles and the beginning of Led Zeppelin.

‘Sing A Simple Song’ was awesome. It had the funk turned right up. ‘Everyday People’ just great, although I only really knew it from the Arrested Development sample. ‘I Want To Take You Higher’, and ‘You Can Make It If You Try’ was also good enough to get me throwing some funky shapes at breakfast time. The rest of the album underwhelmed.

its definitely growing my listening history. I think I might need to be in a very specific mood for this album to hit the right spot and currently as I sit hating physics I kind of dislike the distinct sounds of the 13 minutes of "Sex Machine" I am consuming. I understand why many tracks have been genre defining at the time, but retrospectively and with the context of modern culture some songs from this album just sound like a goldmember backing track or an overproduced porno music.

Pre-funk Not my favorite band. It seems like they’re constantly on the verge of making some good music but they keep coming up a little short. Sure, they have some classics and this album has the track which shall not be named.. but it’s all pretty mid. Ultimately, this is stuff that other bands picked up and carried over the finish line.

I didn't enjoy this much at all. Some songs were torture and I ended up skipping it entirely (looking at you, Track 2). Some of it was good soul music, I enjoyed the song "Sex Machine" a bit, the vibes were good. But this just isn't my thing overall. Some songs reminded me of The Who who I know were popular in this era. Not something I would listen to again.

There is some really cool funk-soul here, like the title track, 'You Can Make it if You Try', 'Sing a Simple Song' and 'I Want to Take You Higher'. All the different voices fluttering in and out is fun, and clearly influenced the likes of Parliament. Larry Graham is a beast of a bass player. However, 'Sex Machine' absolutely sucks the whole album into a black hole of self-indulgence. It's horrible! And lasts for almost fourteen minutes! Get rid of this and replace with two or three more focused songs and you'd be looking at an easy four stars. The older I get, the less patient I have become with endless jams.

Really didn't know what to make of this other than I didn't enjoy it at all. Some of it' is truly bad. The awful 13 min instrumental in it really tested my resolve to listen to all the albums all the way through. I believe it's one of the worst songs I've ever heard. I almost ended up rating this a 1 but I enjoyed the last track just enough to sneak it into a 2.

I hate jam bands. Okay ‘somebody’s watching you’ is a vibe I can get behind. Sex machine was long af that blew me. I’m sure under the right circumstances I would fw this more, a little too loosely organized for my taste.

This is one of the least interesting funk albums i’ve ever listened to. The first half was alright I liked it, but that second half was a chore to get through. Very bland rhythms and the vocals are generic to me. Not replayable for me.

There were a few decent tunes on this but it largely passed me by, not my favourite funk album and it's not a genre I particularly like.

Most songs sounded the same, and I was a bit disappointed.

These song are really repetitive. I know a lot of songs are, but I just couldn’t pay attention past like a minute in to any of them. The only exceptions were Everyday People (which clocked in at just over 2 minutes anyway), and - ironically - Sex Machine (which was 13 minutes long but actually included some variation and was a good, funky jam). Overall, it’s fine. But weren’t there other bands doing the whole “funk” thing better at the time. This just doesn’t do much for me.

Songs feel repetitive. I can see the influence of future bands, but I'm not really enjoying this album. Everyday People is a progressive song lyrically. I like this in moderation but would not listen to an entire album at once again.

Too chaotic for me

Loving the last 30 seconds or so of Stand!. Trumpet solo on point in I Want to Take You Higher. Good music but style does not particularly speak to me due to the repetitive lyrics. In general, Funk does little for me.

Alright Album, Soul Funk with a mix of weirdness thrown in. Pre-Cursor in some ways to Funkadelic but missing the drive of the music and the singing lacks a intimidating punch. Some decent listens but overall just an average listen to me.

Starts out strong with a great melodic footprint, setting down some major grooves and thematic pillars for the rest of the album. Falls apart about midway through, though, as tracks become more and more interlude-like with little driving focus.

Pretty fun and funky album. No huge standouts to me. Although the monstrous 12ish minute song did have some wild times in it.

Was looking forward to this and expected quite a bit out of it - however why it’s overall a good funk album it’s kind of a bit flat overall. Love the instrumental jams and the humour but the singles are not very remarkable. Quite an average album.

This album feels incomplete. The parts feel disjointed too often. For a while I wasn’t even getting a funk vibe. It does show up around Sing A Simple Song. I think listening to Sex Machine would have the opposite of the implied effect. I find far too much of this album boring.

The 14-minute 'Sex Machine' captures this album in...well, not quite a nutshell. Exciting, enthralling, fades into repetitive dullness, then just as it seems to have outstayed its welcome sparks back into something interesting again.

Oh good, 1969 again! ffs list. This had a few moments but mostly it was psychedelic nonsense. Felt longer than 40min, too - the fucking 14min extended jam track didn't help. At least it's funk-based and not folk psychedelia, I guess. 2/5.

i have an old friend who's really into these guys. we are more different than i'd thought. i mean, overall, this was, you know, fine. Everyday People will always be catchy, so there's that. and i didn't realize until just now that body count was covering these guys - i remember seeing them do Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey at the first lotsalosers back in '91, and although i only ever heard it that one time (until i got to the body count album in this list), it stayed with me all this time. thing is, that was ice-t, not these guys. this album feels ahead of its time, based on what i know of music from 1969 - the thing is, i don't really love that funky disco thing that happened in the 70s, sooo...yeah. this one really isn't for me.

This is a soul/funk album from '69 fueled with a lot of the controversies that were happening at the time - and some continue to this day. I feel like these controversies take away from the music and end up souring my opinion on this album. The funk is good while the junk in the lyrics is not. The album can be considered historically important though as a result.

Definitely a lot of funk. One really well know song. Most of the songs did not have lyrics. The Sex Machine joke writes itself. Also, I thought that Sex Machine was going to be the song Love Machine....it was not.

Wasn't the biggest fan if this album, which is surprising given that funk is one of my favorite genres. Many of these melodies sounded uninspired, the songs were repetitive and there's really nothing here that distinguishes this album from many other funk albums. There were some gems though, I absolutely loved "somebody's watching you" which reminded me of Frank Zappa in its zany vocal delivery and experimental instrumentation, I just wish the rest of the album was like that. The songs weren't bad necessarily, they were just forgettable.

Overall for me this album is too much in one tone. The voice is more droning than expressive to my ear. Not a fave.

Started listening but never really heard it. So non descript it didn’t really register for me.

This funk/soul album fires off punchy horns, rubbery bass lines, clipped guitars, and exuberant group vocals feeling like being dragged through a nonstop street parade—vibrant and overflowing with energy and fatiguing instantly.

I really did not like this. I only got half way through before I had to stop.

Not for me, this was quite a hard listen. Musicianship is excellent, but stylistically I could gel with theses songs.

Jeez!This album was proper dull. Felt like I was stuck in slow-mo, just waiting for something to pop. The tunes didn't really hit, and the whole vibe was just flat. Could've been way more exciting, to be honest!

In my opinion, I don't really like this album. I don't know why, but I don't like the singers, the background music, anything. I highly recommend that you don't listen to this album. I only like the scating in some of the songs, and that's all. And it's not even really scating. I highly recommend that you do NOT listen to this album.

Did not like it all. Thought I’d really give disco a go and sly are well known but just could not vibe with any of the songs.

I recognized a couple but I did not enjoy the album at all.

Sorry but this genre of music does not do it for me. Avoided it when I was young but unlike some genre’s which I have grown to like and appreciate this type of funk and soul I cannot listen to and always push the stop button. Only good thing I can say is that some tracks take me back to my Mecca nightclub days standing at side of dance floor etc etc but even those nights sometimes turned out bad and this is a soundtrack for those times.
