Reviews (page 10 of 12)

Good old family fun. Some big instrumentals and a lot of personality is exactly what you'd expect from Sly & the Family Stone. Biggest surprise to me was that this album came out in the 69 as their 4th album

Honestly I really did like their music. I mean this isn’t really up my alley all the time and I feel like I could have been more engaged in the whole thing however I just thought it was really easy to get through.

The first song Stand really just hit me, it was a good album, of course production wise. But nothing really stood out to me too much, good but not entirely for me.

Great album. Fun listen and some classics I didn't know were theirs.

Not really my thing, but a couple good songs.

The tunes were decent, 2nd track was not very office friendly though.

a couple good songs but overall pretty average.

Another case of “a couple hits means this is a MUST LISTEN ALBUM” when you could just stick to the hits

A cool soul funk album that brought the family feeling of togetherness through the record, and felt like it highlighted the changing times in the Black movement of the late 60s. Particularly blending both Black & White artists in the group with something to say about the state of the world and what they want to change and how to move forward. Best: Stand! Worst: Sex Machine I only listened to the 8 original tracks, Spotify had the extended reissue tracks.

“Sing a Simple Song”, “Sex Machine” and the instrumental of “My Brain” were my highlights of this listen. The rest of the album I didn’t much care for. The lyrics to the second track were very unexpected when that played 🤣

Funky and fun for the most part. 3/5

Super cool funk album. It gets a little repetitive and some of the songs are quite long (sec machine), but it’s got some great grooves for sure. Highlights: Everyday People, Sing a Simple Song, Stand!

Seriously funky

A nice fusion with a spine of funk running through it. At times falls into the trap of being too repetitive on a pretty simple theme and becomes boring but all in all not bad

Typical instrumental-focused 60's rock. Very enjoyable, but very light on the lyrics for my particular taste.

Not my favourite Sly album but the opener, Everyday People and You Can Make It If You Try are all fantastic

Fun but noisy

Lots of very fun free-form funk! Had some absolutely fun bops but lacked some deeper notions and through lines through the album

I hear the inspiration for most of the Sesame Street/Electric Company theme music in this album. Funky and cheerfully positive. The chronology clearly works out.

Bien, pero sin más.

Funk pop that sounds way better on headphones than speakers. At it's best this is a hard rocking wah-guitar workout. The standout track is Take Me Higher, all driving fuzzy bass and energetic horns. Simple Song and You Can Make It have a great NOLA funk sound with organ/guitar riffs establishing the dominant hook, back and forth interplay between singers, and horns for big hits. Sex Machine is a psych-funk wah excursion - fun but a bit repetitive. Everyday People and its B-Side You Can Make it are really awful though - EP is forever tainted from being played to death in a cloying Toyota ad - boring arrangements, slow dragging composition, and a meaningless quasi-political message.

1969 What an amazing year. Could you imagine being at Woodstock!? Never heard of these guys. LMAO! The second track is titled, "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitney" That track was actually pretty cool. They do these vocals that sound like a harmonica or kazoo. Lot of funk and soul to this album. Oh shit! Everyday People. I've definitely heard this song before. I'll give this 3 stars. Didn't hate, didn't love it.

Not my kind of music. It has some good groves on it.

This was cool enough burbling away in the background to be fair. Got a bit tiresome towards the end but I suppose this kind of funky twittering can at some points.

Classic album of the times. I only knew a couple tracks, but it grew on me the deeper I got into it. I appreciate it for what it is.

Started off pretty freshhhh 2.5/5 Fav: Stand!

Not big on the old groove.

I like the disco elements, some of the songs were slower but still pretty solid. Overall a pretty decent album

Old school funk…with a message.

It was fine. Nothing really major about it, but no real bad song either

Interesting lyrics

Any album that has the lyrics “scooby dooby doo-bee” is good with me…and love the funk!

53/100

Very jammy record. I enjoyed my listen but was kind of something that faded into the background. Probably deserves a second more mindful listen.

it's pretty cool

Don't have a whole lot to say. I liked it. It sounded like standard funk music, granted good standard funk music. I did some research and Sly and the Family Stone apparently influenced a lot of later funk music, with Stand! being one of their most prominent albums. Their 1969 Woodstock performance was also dope, and they performed the songs better there than on this album. Anyways 3/5 lets go. Also Sex Machine wtf

This album seems to tap into the humanity of the time. Adresesing cultural differences and promoting positivity in the face of it. It is a short album with half of the tracks being snlge edits of a track before. That 13 min Sex Machine instrumental, that is cray. 6.5

SYNOPSIS: Very solid album, many songs have different vibes and I enjoyed them all. Can't exactly put a reason on it but some of the songs gave me Beatles/Bowie/Rolling Stones vibes. Overall an excellent album. TOP TRACKS: Stand! Sex Machine Everyday People FINAL RATING: 6.5/10

Maybe meeting this too late it's not that outstanding for me as it supposed to be

Pretty classic sounding 60s soul album, moving away from the motown sound and instead adding more funk elements. It has Sly and The Family Stones most well known song, "Everyday People". Definitely has political themes in tune with the era. Overall not bad but not as good as many other soul and funk albums +/- 10 years

I was so excited that this looked like a deliciously short album, until I got to track seven. They sound like they’re having fun. Good for them! Not as much fun for me, but there are couple of belters on there. Everyday People is a timeless classic.

I love this band, but this album is overrated. The great songs are remarkable. But Sex Machine is boring and about 10 minutes too long. And "Don't Call Me..." has never been my favorite and the damn thing never seems to end. Five stars for "Sing a Simple Song", "I Want to Take You Higher," and "You Can Make It If You Try."

Some great stuff and some dross. Enjoyable though.

Best songs: everyday ppl, you can make it if u try, stand! Music for starting a civil rights movement

“Sing a simple song” & “Everyday People” are my favorite songs of this album, I think! Very listenable album over all, good as a background music

Ihan jees!

Okay, catchy at parts. I’d rather Sit!

we should all sing track 2 together. everyday people

Good bass lines, some catchy songs but too long

Good album.

Not my thing personally, but definitely a classic that belongs here.

Pretty good. A little bit like the Jackson 5 with some elements of Hendrix

Not my jam

Listen again: maybe Purchase for my collection: maybe Favourite Song: My Brain (Zig Zag) Love me a good guitar instrumental.

Funk/rock. Mostly fun, some was pretty rambly

Standard good funk

Cool guitar sounds but not an album with repeat value.

rolling stone пизже

Funky goodness but maybe a bit too primitive for my tastes. I would have loved it had I known nothing of that scene but knowing what comes later kinda takes away from the accomplishment this is. I'll rate it a hit higher than because of that. 3*

I found the instrumentals very pleasing and interesting, and the vocal performances were good. Unfortunately, the lyrics were lacking. There was no depth, and often it's just the same repeated line throughout all the songs. Still an enjoyable listen, though. Textbook 3/5

Always been a big fan of Sly and there were undoubtedly some absolute numbers on this. However, the whole thing in one listen gets boring.

Seems to be a mix of melodic hits and jazz-type instrumentals that Ezra Collective were probably influenced by. A wholesome set of tunes, not that I was listening to the lyrics. Everyday People stands out, as does Stand. Stand.

Decent R and B Enjoyable but don’t feel the need to listen again 6/10

Some superb and solid funk, soul, and grooves in here. I also am glad to learn how culturally and historically significant this album is. I had heard a few tunes from it over the years, and I always appreciate learning the context around an album. I just find that so interesting no matter the album.

Personal Enjoyability (out of 40): 22 Consistency of Quality (out of 25): 12 Keeps Interest (out of 25): 14 Album Flow (out of 10): 7 Overall 55/100 ★★★ Quick Review: Starts a bit 'meh' but the quality soon picks up. Sex Machine is too long, but it doesn't actually feel like 13 minutes. Everyday People is the highlight

Some good stuff on here. I think they had better energy in live performances like at Woodstock.

This took me a second to warm up to, but once I was in it, it's like wearing a fuzzy cropped sweater and just feeling groovy in it. Eventually got real lost in the sauce on Sex Machine. Things waned after that, but My Brain (Zig-Zag) got me back on track. Overall, not something I'd crave listening to regularly, but a cool experience. Favorite tracks: Sing a Simple Song - Single Version, My Brain (Zig-Zag)

Fine, nothing stood out.

Not quite as catchy or gripping as it sometimes feels it should be

A bit of a mixed bag, but enjoyable overall.

Not my thing, pretty boring really

Good listen

Enjoyed

Worth listening to, but personally I am not much of a fan.

Don't super love it. Not my fave genre

Some fun funk tunes, but the album as a whole is a bit messy and unfocused. Definitely went “okay okay I get it” and hit skip on a few of these tracks.

Decent but a bit repetitive.

Every Day People (#7) and I Want to Take You Higher (#3) are bops. Rest is good 60's funk and R&B. It's not really my thing, but there are some gems. I made it to Sex Machine by 12:30am May 15th, 2023. Will listen to more tomorrow.

Sly & the Family Stone is one of those bands that I know I've heard, but I hadn't listened to any of their albums REALTABLE MOMENTTI!! I get the feeling it's difficult to rate this 'objectively'.... ei ole vaikiata!! se on objektive kolmonen... jaksaa kuunnella ja lisäksi muutama marskaileva biisi... everyday people

Never have I ever listened to a full Sly and the Family Stone album. I shouldn't be that surprised that I liked it this much, though. Everyday People is pretty undeniable song. And Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey was a nice surprise. It's Sly and the Family Stone - what do you want from me?

Funky funk

Nice enough 70s album. It starts strong with Stand!, but meanders into funk and other genres without really anything new. The 13-minute Sex machine is especially tedious. I liked the final track, You Can Make It If You Try, but as a whole this album didn't leave me wanting more, but rather a bit less. 2.5/5

Bien, pero sin más.

Meh. Nothing really stood out aside from Sex Machine.

Good album, great bbb vibes (except that one song). Cool to listen to the rest of their album because I’ve definitely heard everyday people

Unfortunately just been working so much haven’t gotten to really enjoy these albums recently. This album was cool though.

Inspirational, jamin.

Yes it's a pretty good listen. 3 stars.

Yeah, it's alright.

Pretty good

To start off with I don't know funk very well, although I have heard of Sly and the Family Stone, and wasn't quite sure what to expect. I did enjoy it, although another listen (while paying closer attention) would probably be good! Lots of progressive themes like other black funk artists from the same era. Keen to revisit.

Nice funky tunes, but they sort of repeat themselves too much. That said, I’ll contradict myself and say I utterly fell for Sex Machine.

Excited for this one, as I don't think I ever got round to hearing a whole Sly album. Cool funk and soul sounds as expected. Some of the tracks are catchy hits, but there's also sprawling psychedelic bits. I like the aesthetic, but some tracks feel unpolished compared to others. The second track ("don't call me...") is not doing it for me - not because of the racial subject matter; I just don't think it's a well-executed song, and the production values seem a bit lower. Overall some great bits here, but it doesn't strike me as a great album taken as a whole. 3.5*

Feels pretty modern. Did not ignite the soul. Some tracks were groovy, but overall felt generic.

too old for me im 18 and i dont really find it so interesting

The Album is a classic Funk Soul late 60's / early 70. The guitar is very present, funky basslines, a lot of brass and James Brown style vocals .

Enjoyable, but wasn't crazy for it

Some really good songs, good funk mixed with improvisation. Seems a little dated and rough around the edges. Really big for the time though.

A few good songs. The fun style of Sly gives this album a week three, instead of strong two.

Had higher hopes for this album. Weak 3

Old me would have given this a 2. New me says weak 3 with some okay songs.

Quite decent, didnt really recognise much off this but could hear their influence in others. I imagine James Brown was a fan, or the other way round, whoever came second. Very funky, a bit 60s rock at times especially with that Doorsy keyboard. More interested in their background and story than their music in a way though, probably wouldnt go out of my way to listen to them again but wouldn’t switch them off thats for sure

Pretty funky! Recognised the hits and enjoyed most of it. Bet this was banging when it was originally released.

Dug it!

I like it. Bien soulero. Algunos temas maso pero buenas vibras.

Some killer grooves on this album, but it's also a lot of long drawn out one-note jams. I want to take you higher and everyday people are the obvious standouts

Not bad. Just kind of okay I guess.

Definitely some good songs, but overall just average

Solid! 3.5

Like 3.4/3.5. There are obviously hits on this I did feel a couple songs were just alright

I enjoyed my morning cup of joe at the breakfast table while listening to Sex Machine, and it was so so pleasant. But under that pretty, idealistic scene was the presence of something dark and sinister. Bro was fighting for his LIFE there. In the most condescending way possible, I wanted to orgasm for him so that he would stop, because that shit was exhausting me as well. Once again, I felt little attachment to this. Maybe it's because I'm selective, which I don't think is a bad trait, but I'm beginning to question if I'm as musically woke as I think I am.

It's funky, it's ripe, and it makes me wanna move my flat ass. Does it remind me of the theater class I took in my last semester of senior year with my friends?! A bit. Did I like it? Hell yeah. Is it a 7/10? A 3.5? Absolutely! Am I going to go back to how I was rating albums at the start of this and be pretty harsh?! YUP!

It’s bittersweet to see an album I already know pretty well. At least I like this one, so I know I’ll enjoy the day listening to it. Before I relisten it’s a 3.5, closer to a 4. I sing “Don’t Call Me N***** Whitey” all the time with adlib’d lyrics but no one ever understands the reference. Now, they gonna understand. Not as good as I remember, still like it tho.

Will lift your spirit 100%, though some tracks are hit or miss. Production is dated. Singles really stand out from the rest. Enjoyable but might be a difficult entry into funk. Best song: Sing a Simple Song (The funk in this piece is unreal!) Worst song: Sex Machine (Some parts are great, some just annoying).

Some of the song are great...some are meh!

Really funky stuff

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yes, for its long run, it’s really entertaining and full of energy from start to finish Favourite song: Track 11 - You Can Make It If You Try

Funk with a brain.

I never would have listened to this on my own, and I'm glad I did. While I Didn't vibe with most of the songs, there were a few I really dug. "I want to take you Higher" and "Somebody's Watching You" are catchy as hell, and "Sex Machine" was just awesome. The other songs were hit or miss, nothing that I was super interested in, not in a way I didn't enjoy, just not as good as the ones I mentioned. 5/10

It's okay. Like The Rolling Stones album from yesterday, it's not my thing. But I liked the lyrics of Stand and Somebody's Watching You.

Funky and groovy - great music, highs and lows as far as the songs themselves

There were parts of this album I loved and parts I hated. I don't know if I've been this polarized on a single album before. The instrumentals in Sex Machine and My Brain were rocking but some of the vocals were repulsive. I guess 3 stars since that's right in the middle of Love and Hate.

I had higher expectations for this. Everyday People and I Want to Take You Higher are great, which I expected from the rest of the album. The rest was only fine.

I liked the vibe but the songs went on 30% longer than they needed to

Alright funky album. I still prefer bands like Funkadelic but this was definitely worth a listen.

Not bad. Expected it to be funkier

Some great playing but overall some interesting choices. Sex Machine felt like the high point.

how dare he call me whitey. this is way more coherent than most of the famous funk albums we've had.

Can't believe this is Sylvester Stallone. ADRIAN!!!!

Meh fine but don’t want to listen to it again

A delightfully fun romp, impossible not to be in a good mood while listening. On the flip side, also not too memorable other than the hits

Its fine. Its funky. It has squawking guitar and horns. Not every track is s banger... a lot of it is ripe for a Tarantino movie. Everyday People is a memorable track.

Started off really well, but then I lost interest a bit towards the end. Still enjoyed it for the most part

Glad we don’t do 12 minute jam sessions any more.

This is not a genre I typically listen to but this was pretty good!

This is a super funky album! I found it an interesting detail that "Everyday People", which is easily the greatest hit and most well known song on the album (if not most well known for the entire group), yet it was the shortest on the album by nearly 40 seconds. The album is full of 60s dream idealization, but came at the end of the decade, when that dream was falling apart. I can imagine that Sly and the Family Stone as well as many hippies clung to this as a final stance against the peace movement tapering out.

Funky soul

Impressive, but Sly Stone and co. would go on to create better works than this.

I liked the album. I would put it on again given the opportunity.

An interesting listen, I enjoyed what I hurt, however I will not be revisiting it

Couple good songs but probably Mmmm won’t listen again

I wish I liked this more. Some of the songs are so much a part of the canon by this point. I think that may have dulled its impact a bit compared to listening to it with fresh ears.

Catchy but also with a message. Not completely my type of music, but for one album it’s nice. Sex machine was not necessary for me, sounded more like a jam session. Favourite songs: - Stand - Don’t call me nigger, whitey - Everyday people

Incredible band, incredible album. Just killer bass lines, funky guitars, keyboards and horns. A band firing on all cylinders. Fantastic.

Pretty fun album. Fav song: You Can Make It If You Try

Decent songs. A few seemed to go way to long. Nothing that really moved me though. 2.5/5

It’s a funky old album. I’ve heard Everyday People a thousand times, but never knew where it came from.

Funky classics.

Funk, soul, 1969. In my opinion this album feels quite basic and not really ambitious. It's a record which I simply don't get, but it's also far to be a bad LP. For me this is only decent, but probably it's just a matter of taste.

3.5/5. Felt more fast paced than the other funky album, which is pretty groovy. Every album should have a 13 minute song called “Sex Machine” from now on.

This album was rlly fun, some of the songs on here will definitely be on my playlists in the future! intense but overall a great experience haha, Everyday People was my fave song on here

chill, working mood

I've had quite an interesting run of funk/motown belters with a lot to say. This one whipped along fast enough, didn't grab me enough to want to come back to it though.

Didn’t excite me

I liked not loved it

Pretty decent

Everyday People is solid. Everything else was just OK

I thought I would like this more than I did; I like the SatFS songs I know and generally like this kind of music, but I found this a bit disappointing. Everyday People and You can Make it If you Try were good (also, one song that I think was an extra on the version Google Play served up) but the rest fell a bit flat.

"Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks." This is where it all started. There's just so much affirmation and positivity all over this album, and even the female vocals chanting on the all-too-short "Everyday People" sound like something they'd sing while skipping rope on the pavement. The dark side of this is that this album stands in the shadow of Sly's massive cocaine addiction. One thing this album does well is evoke the feeling of the emotions it's trying to communicate, like how the raunchy electric guitar is the exact sound a sex machine might make, complete with the increased rhythm of the pounding percussion that leads to inevitable orgasm. In the end, this album is bookended with songs meant to uplift the listener. Stand up and try! You can make it.

Not too spectacular

It's OK. Obviously "Everyday People" was the big hit. I looked up the date of the Doors' hit Light My Fire and that was released 2 years earlier, so it doesn't seem particularly original to be releasing a song with "Baby, light my fire - I wanna take you higher".

Some really good tracks 3/5

Respect the musicianship of Sly & The Family Stone, but I found myself getting a bit tired of this record towards the end.

Usually, when it comes to classic rock albums, the long, overdrawn solo instrumental songs in the middle of the shorter songs, usually are the weakest. Here, to me it is the opposite. The 14 minute "Sex Machine" is my favorite of the album and the strongest. Meaning to me, I guess, it was the vocals and lyrics that wasn't turning me on as other fans of the albums.

Smooth stuff

It's fun and nothing bad, but didn't grab me as much as I'd like. I can see it objectively being a 4 or 5 though.

This is a pretty cool and funky album. Faves: Stand! Everyday People, You Can Make It If You Try

There’s just something about 'Stand!' that sounds both 1969, yet very contemporary at the same time. And remember, Sly & The Family Stone were bending and blending musical genres while Prince was still a little kid. Undergirding the whole thing is, of course, a good measure of funk, from the very first call to arms, ‘Stand!’ to the concluding, ‘You Can Make It If You Try.’ ‘Sing a Simple Song’ in particular was just pure soul, with a marvelous recording that I would describe lovingly as pork chop fat. So many of these songs- the three aforementioned, along with ‘I Want to Take You Higher’ and ‘Everyday People’- could have continued playing in perpetuity. The ‘Sex Machine’ jam at close to fourteen minutes grew a little tiresome (Sly and company don’t work quite as well as a jam band, but it was a valiant effort, and they sounded as if they were having fun, so…) And I’m not sure if I liked ‘Somebody’s Watching You’ or not. I didn’t care for the bulk of the song, but the catchy refrain kinda grew on me. Not sure what to do with that. Finally, while I wouldn’t say I enjoyed ‘Don’t Call Me Nigger, Whitey’ I do appreciate the courage of Sly Stone’s convictions in recording it. And the horn players Cynthia Robinson and Jerry Martini’s accents on the lyrics really drove the message home. Special mention goes out to the great bassist Larry Graham whose funky slap rhythms and thunderous playing throughout actually elevated the songs, one obvious example being, of course, ‘I Want to Take You Higher.’ I’m guessing that the vocoder was relatively new technology in 1969, but a sample on the second song quickly revealed that a little of it goes a long way. That said, Sly made a much better call on the sure and steady cow bell on ‘Everyday People,’ so we’ll call his arrangements a push. Sly proclaims on the opening song, ‘Stand! You’ve been sitting much too long. There’s a permanent crease in your right and wrong.’ But as long as your up and standing, I’m sure he’d want you to do a little dancing, too, and work out that other crease down your pant legs. The whole Stone family’s doing their very best to iron ‘em both out.

Fav songs: - Stand! - Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey

I don’t know - it wasn’t an album I’d call favorite but there were songs that grabbed me. I thought I’d like it more but I think my idea of what this band’s sound was, was a bit off vs. the reality.

Pretty funky album

äh helt okej men också lite dåligt

Good jams. Great messaging and nice beats. A bit one-note at times.

This was an interesting one. I enjoyed it. Not going into heavy rotation but it didn’t suck.

Good funky album

Really good funk soul record

Insane to think this was 1969, it is still more innovative and interesting than most of the stuff from the past 40 years - they clearly had much better drugs

pretty good funky stuff, nothing stand out though.

Some uncomfortable language, but rightly so. And of course, some classics.

Politisches Gedudel der Generation Black is beautiful. Absolute Überraschung: „Everyday People“! 2.6

understand their impact, didn't completely enjoy everything.

Extended funk jams aren't really my bag. Funk in general is only occasionally my bag, as controversial as that may be. Soulful pop classics like Stand! and Everyday People are more my bag. The album certainly *feels* like a classic and I do like it for the most part. 3.5 seems about fair.

pretty ok

I don't listen to much Funk/Soul, but there were some nice moments here. I especially liked "I Want to Take You Higher". Of course I had heard "Everyday People" before, but had no idea it was these guys until now. Shows what I know, but I thought it was decent despite not knowing much about the genre. An easy 3-star album for me.

Groovy. Song #2 coming in hot with an instant classic of a chorus. 5/10

Funky, psychedelic, not really my style but fun

album started out quite rough for me. Felt too 70s cheery bologna. But then it got kind of funky, and I enjoyed it. so. 3 stars it is.

Nautinnollista funkkia.

Funky but also outright political. The horns are crisp and the variety in vocals (gender, race, etc) give a lot of texture an interest. When the melodies are catchy the music is brilliant. \"Everyday People\" is objectively great, showcasing all the aforementioned strengths of the band. Unfortunately, and I hate to say it, some of the other tracks are repetitive and boring. I can see all of the songs being great live or on a dance floor; this album isn't really meant for just sitting and listening to.

Unimpressive collection of middle-ranking funk songs.

A funky good time

Alright album, nice flow for the latter half of the album. Liked "Sex Machine" the most.

Not the best effort from Sly but still good.

Funky and a little repetitive

Pretty fun, nice grooves. 3.5/5

Goed zeg! Deze soul beviel me eigenlijk best goed...

This album has a little bit of everything. It’s got a long instrumental track and groovy tune pop hit and an activist song. It’s an alright album. Probably be better without the long instrumental one. 5.8/10

Meh for me. Hit & miss pieces. Loved Stand! but it was the high mark. Hated the 14-minute long Sex Machine.

Lo escuché distraido

Cool funky grooves. Everyday People and I Want To Take You Higher are absolute classics, welcome additions to any party playlist. Sex Machine is so self-indulgent. I don't need to groove to the same instrumental number for over 13 minutes, that doesn't do it for me. One of those tracks where the people who are really high on the dance floor can zone out and go all night, but the rest of us roll our eyes after 3 minutes and want the DJ to move on.

Enough creative moments to know that there's something real here, but perhaps hampered by an overall lack of "musical-ness" and average lyric writing. Close to great, but just short. Exception is EDP, which makes me wonder if the writing is different on that track?

Heard it before. It's pretty good if you're into funk.

Only half listened to this. I really like a couple of songs by this band but this album as a whole didn’t really do it for me.

Very funky. Just okay.

Some electric funk hits. Some electric funk duds.

Nice songs to passively listen to, I knew some of them.

I'm a bit split on this one. Some parts I liked quite a lot and others were very 'meh'. So while I give this a 3, it's actually a 2 for half of the songs and a 4 for the other half. My favorite was the pretty intense instrumental guitar track Sex Machine.

Not yet the funkiness of the 70s, still carries stronger blues/rock n roll influence. Good album

Okeeee

goede listen, veel toffe geluiden. somebody's watching you pak ik mee Sex machine begin klinkt als splatoons (nintendo game) die praten.

decent

That's some funky mediocrity!

New one. Soul, chill, some bluesy notes

Funky for sure. But got bored

Good souly vibe

Mixed bag. Some songs are funkylicious and some are meh. Overall pretty good, though.

It's ok. It's dated and reminds me of curtis mayfield. There's a couple of great tracks, but overall whilst I like this type of music, it wasn't as gripping as other black artists. 6/10 That's a bit generous.

Love "Dance to the Music", "Everyday People", and "Thank You", but the rest of the album doesn't do that much for me. This would probably be 3.5 for me normally but the regular issue with half stars applies. Today I'm feeling like rounding this down.

Just OK. A lot of it way too indulgent. Must have been a fun live band though.

I started off really enjoying this, it was heading for a 5 but as it moved along I fell out of love with it. I loved the energy of it but there was just a bit too much going on in this party for me to focus in on one thing. Much like the brave lions’ midfield trying to cope with the dominant azzuri in the centre of the park, I just couldn’t keep up and the thing passed me by.

Can clearly see that the band have influenced many funk artists with their sound. Enjoyed the album, 'Everyday People' and 'I want to take you higher' were the standouts for me but not my favourite genre and found the album as a whole a bit of a challenge to get through.

I awoke on this Wednesday morning, believing that perforce I had shaken off the sorrow and melancholy of witnessing the most talented and likeable set of England players in my lifetime lose on penalties (why did it have to be penalties? Why?). Reader, I had not. The cloud had not lifted, only temporarily allowed the sun (of optimism for the world cup, of appreciation for the incredible effort) to peep through. I needed something to get me out of my head and into my body, and the timeless grooves of Sly & The Family Stone did just that. They got me grooving such that I could forget the sickening feeling of watching penalties (!!!) from behind my hands and prevent my remembrances of the cruel, bittersweet hope of Jordan Pickford saving from Jorginho, that master trickster of the penalty spot. This was also timely, given the vicious, and sadly predictable racist abuse of the three exceptional players who missed by people who have no doubt spent the whole tournament cheering them. The title of track two tells you all you need to know about how long that senseless battle has been fought. It’s hard not to feel inspired by Sly’s groovable exhortations to action. Quite the tonic.

Excited

Funky. Powerful

This music made me shake my booty

Pretty decent. Almost of the verge of being too funky.

Fine for what it is.

Fun funky listen but didn't blow me away

'racism bad' the album

I mean I didn’t hate this album. It’s ultra funky and the use of the wah wah pedal is something else. I couldn’t choose any real stand out track though. Each one has its own uniqueness without blowing me away. I’ll give it a very cool.. 3 Stars!

funky, but a little much in places. A 14 minute track seems excessive

Good length, very funky, like the gospel elements Saved: Sex Machine

Not really my type of music but quite enjoyable nonetheless

Classic funk songs. Still groovin!

Good music, though not really my genre. “Everyday people” is a great song.

Boogie woogie! Liked this

The first song really gave me 70's sitcom theme song vibes. After that, it was kinda just like Earth, Wind, and Fire, but not as good. Probably wouldn't listen to it again, and none of the songs really stood out to me, but I liked it okay.

Some strong extended jam sessions, especially "Sex Machine" which clocks in around 10 minutes. Plenty of surprising guitar and organ sounds and Sly sounds great with the Vocoder. Not quite the hits or fire power of There's a Riot...

Bien, pero sin más.

It's got style and it's got funk. I mean, other than 13 minutes of... whatever you call it.

Don't call me nigger, whitey is a Jam! Stand outs: sex machine, you can make it if you try

Not quite my cup of tea, but nothing offensive about this album. Think Liam will like it more than me. Found some of the tracks quite repetitive.

Some good funky funk funk tracks but some a bit repetitive/indulgent.

Didn’t finish. Fresh use of wah pedals. Interesting but felt slow.

it's...listenable?!

Don't call me the n word, whitey! Don't call me whitey, the n word! This album remastered for 2021

Semibängeri Bra funk fiilis men ganska lång

Funky!

good to know

Not really my thing, but I can appreciate it and liked it at times.

Funk som aldrig helt lyfter för mej. Bra?

classic sly and the family stone!

Deserves a 3.5. Very smooth throughout with some great songs. Very relevant racial messages even from a 1969 album. At times sounds a bit repetitive.

groovy stuff, some experimental stuff too

Funkig. En del coola instrumentala partier. Några hits man kände igen.

Groovy.

Kinda wish it was Sly Stallone

Ok but not my type

all the funky for your daily needs.

I haven’t had a chance to listen to the album in its entirety, but from what I’ve heard, I feel like I will like it.
