Outstanding album.
You'd have to be a bit of a fuck to not get around this. Everything about this album is just so great. It's hard not to be utterly enamoured with it throughout. So much passion, so much groove. Instrumentally banging. Great range of tracks. Her ability to be such a powerful yet emotive vocalist is quite something. One of those albums that really makes you feel alive. Fav Track: Good to me as I am to you
I mean its an unimpeachable record. The songs that aren't massive hits are so short you can't tire of them before they're over. 5 easy
Nothing to say. Aretha is the Queen of Soul and this is one of her best.
A clear 5. Classics throughout delivered perfectly
The Queen has arrived. What a voice, and what an excellent group of songs. I don’t have much original to say here, but I will never forget her performance if you make me feel like a natural woman to honor Carole king at the kennedy center honors. It was spectacular and it’s such a shame that the song’s outro is faded out here.
Soul doesn’t get much better. Though not all of these tracks are classics, the vocal presence on each is simply undeniable.

I didn’t consider myself an Aretha Franklin fan but I listened to this four times through. There’s something to be said for 30 minute albums that don’t overstay their welcome - no weak tracks, no fluff, no filler.
Never a bad listening to Aretha. Album really shows her capabilities as an artist.
I would have rated this 5/5 in any case, but given I just watched the Muscle Shoals doc the other day about the background musicians at Fame, it was already top of mind. And I'm a sucker for any version of People Get Ready, and this one is stellar.
That was a lovely way to spend 30 minutes.

(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman!
There's a lot to consider with Lady Soul: the production, the studio, the players, the producer and the song writing. Jerry Wexler did the world a favour when he recognised what needed to happen with Aretha, without him she would have gone down as a minor gospel singer, like a b grade Jean Wells. First thing he does is get her to play the piano and sing, smart move. Then he gets her to New York and Muscle Shoals, and that brings her into the world of Spooner et al, match made in heaven. And then there's the tunes, the songwriters. Don Covay, James, Curtis, Eddie and Felix from the Rascals, and of course the perfect meeting of Aretha and Gerry and Carole, I'd argue as close to perfect until she decided to take on Hal and Burt's I Say a Little Prayer. Wexler has the vision and the chutzpah to pull it all together and bring together all the right elements for a another critical stage in the evolution of pop music. You simply can't imagine a pop music world without Aretha from Lady Soul on, she's out there in our pop music DNA. A beautiful record.
Classic! One great soul track after another. I could possibly get picky after a close listen, but why would I do that? After a long hard day this album really lifted my spirits, and both of us could enjoy it together.
My parents were huge Al Jolson fans &, subsequently, so was I. In 1961, when Columbia was trying to turn Aretha into a lounge singer, they released a single of her covering the Jolson classic Rock-a-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody. It was the first song I ever heard her sing. reached #20 on the 2UE Top 40 & at age ten, I bought that single & still have it. She could sing the phonebook, which is why Rolling Stone voted her the Greatest Singer Of All Time in 2008. There’s a clip you can catch on Youtube of Aretha on Shindig in 1964, performing The Shoop Shoop Song, which wasn’t a song she ever recorded. This was when she was still signed to Columbia, before Atlantic stole her away & gave her the chance at true greatness. And as she absolutely tears the song up, Darlene Love, performing backing vocals with the house girl-group, The Blossoms, starts waving & shouting encouragement at Aretha, because she can see just how good she was. It’s one of my absolute favourite pieces of live 60’s TV. What a voice. This is a truly great record. And it’s not just her doing - the material is outstanding - the cream of American songwriters from that period - Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Don Covay, Goffin & King, The Rascals & Aretha herself. The producer, Jerry Wexler & the engineer, the great Tom Dowd. And, as well as the cream of Memphis’s Muscle Shoals musicians, there’s Clapton, The Sweet Inspirations, Cissy Houston, & the great King Curtis. And Aretha was never in better voice. A true classic.
It is hard to say anything new about Aretha, at the height of her amazing powers here. Even the filler tracks ("Niki Hoeky", anyone?) are funky and she sings the hell out of every song, and there is a reason the standout tracks from this record are absolute classics. An unambiguous five-star all-time classic album. I could listen to this every day. Damn it, I _should_ listen to this every day. Most surprising moment; her two whoops right at the end of "Good as I am to you"

Welcome to Club 5 Star! This album is an absolute gem, and I can never get enough of it. As a man I will always proudly sing (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman whenever I’m feeling good. Then we’ve also got Chain of Fools, Ain’t No Way, People Get Ready, AND (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You’ve Been Gone. Mmmm. Delicious. The whole album is just so well done, you can feel Aretha’s presence through the album, and you quite literally cannot skip this album if you want to know how modern music evolved. Truly magnificent through and through.
Chain of Fools and a Natural Woman? Five stars.

"Lady Soul" is the 12th studio album from Aretha Franklin and has both cover and original songs. Standing out are the backing vocals from The Sweet Inspirations including Cissy Houston and Aretha's two sisters, Carolyn and Erma Franklin. The album was a huge success on the Billboard charts: #1 in Black albums, #2 in Pop and #3 Jazz. Strong backing vocals cascading from The Sweet Inspirations begin the album in the hit "Chain of Fools." Joe South delivers a great 60's-sounding guitar. She's one of her boyfriend's many girlfriends and she needs to break that chain. The pace is slowed in Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready." Aretha delivers a more soulful and gospel-like version with a great finish. A song of hope for freedom and heaven. Side one ends with the incredible "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Women," written by Gerry Goffin, Carole King and Jerry Wexler. The piano. The strings and arrangement by Ralph Burns. The harmonies of Aretha and The Sweet Inspiration. The uplifting message of finding someone who makes you whole. Side two starts with two songs Aretha wrote; "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone" was the third single and brings the groove. Horns. And, of course, Aretha brings it as well. Eric Clapton adds a bluesy/soulful guitar to "Good to Me As I Am to You." Horns. No backing vocals as Aretha ends wailing. She's given everything but gets nothing in return. The album ends with my favorite song on the album and one her sister, Carolyn, wrote "Ain't No Way." With the horns, an almost baroque pop ballad start. Maybe, Aretha's most emotional vocal performance. Soulful. Beautiful. How can I love you if you're tying my hands. Just a few weeks ago I had Aretha's 1967 album "I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You" which was I liked a lot. I like "Lady Soul" more. More soulful. Her voice fits the music perfectly. An album absolutely worth a listen and owning.
Na Sam Cooke heerlijk nog meer soul. Geweldig stemgeluid, lekkere muziek. Een liveplaat hiervan zou helemaal de naden uit je broek swingen. Getwijfeld tussen een 4 en een 5, omdat een paar nummers toch een beetje kapot zijn gedraaid op de radio. Maar omdat dit zoveel bezieling heeft (in contrast tot de gladde robotmuziek van Abba) verdient dit lekker toch een 5.
For those who didn't get how great she was. For those who didn't understand the fuss. It's all here. Chain of Fools at the open is absolutely killer.
This album just flies by, didn't even stop it when it restarted just so I could hear Chain of Fools a second time. Natural Woman, Groovin, People Get Ready (but not my favourite version) ...this album is top of the line.

My introduction to Aretha was as Matt Guitar Murphy's husband in The Blues Brothers. And then she had that huge hit a few years later with "Freeway Of Love". It wasn't until she performed duets with George Michael and Annie Lennox that I realized that she was much more than a sassy diner waitress who sassed Jake and Elwood Blues for ordering four fried chickens, dry white toast and a Coke. If only I would have just started with this landmark album. No wonder Belushi, Aykroyd, Lennox, Michael and millions others went out of their way to honor the one and only Queen of Soul. This is as good as it gets right here kids.

This is the second album by Aretha Franklin that I've gotten in this album generator. This particular album is her 12th studio album, and was made 2 years after the first album of her's that I listened to (I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You). This album definately feels more polished, and complete. The backing band are more lively, and add a funky/bluesy feel to the music. Aretha's vocals, as always, blow the roof off of the place, and the addition of Cissy Houston (Whitney Houston's mother) and her group the Sweet Inspirations, along with Aretha's sisters Carolyn and Erma Franklin as background vocals just added that little bit of contrast to elevate the whole album that much further. There isn't a bad song on the album. Things of note that stood out: 1) People Get Ready has a fantastic gospel feel to it, 2) Eric Clapton was brought in as the guitarist on the song Good to Me As I Am to You, and his bluesy rock style was awesome, 3) Chain of Fools is a phenomenal song. Every time I hear the lyrics: "You told me to leave you alone, my father said "come on home" , my doctor said "take it easy", oh, but your loving is much too strong, I'm added to your, chain, chain, chain... " my mind goes back to the movie School of Rock when Tomika is convincing Dewey that she can sing. Amusingly enough, I referenced School of Rock with my first Aretha Franklin album as well. Favourite songs: Chain of Fools, People Get Ready, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone, Good To Me As I Am To You, Groovin', Niki Hoeky, Money Won't Change You Least favourite song: if forced to pick one, Ain't No Way. Still phenomenal, just not as much as the other songs on the album. Easy 5/5

Aretha at her best! Lady Soul is one of her best. Good to Me as I Am to You is one of the least recognized masterpieces of Franklin.
Almost nothing beats a night alone listening to an album like this while just chilling out. I love soul music and there are a ton of soul classics on here from chain of fools to natural woman and all the rest are just as banging. You know an album is usually a 5 when the spotify radio that comes on afterward is also awesome

One of the greatest albums of all time? Possibly. This isn't even her greatest hits. Listen to a couple of songs you might not know that have staggering depths to the levels of soul then relish in Natural Woman (one of the most spine tingling tunes ever). Utterly 5* and I'd be happy if I never heard Chain of Fools again.
Southern blues Soul, true R&B with big band style brass. Incredible voice and a good variety of songs/styles. Impressed with the diversity of styles as each song was very different from the last. The instrumental parts were great throughout but i particularly liked them in Since you've been gone.
The first album of 160 or so that after listening I went 'I need to buy this album.'

"Chain of Fools"... is there a better song in the realm of soul music? Oh yea, maybe it's "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", which is only four songs later on this same record. JEEEZ. I also really liked track 4, "Niki Hoeky", which surprisingly had the lowest amount of plays on the album on Spotify. The bass line pushes the track forward so well. After starting with a bop it really just continues. This album slaps you so hard all you can say is "thank you may I have another." Everything is so well done.

This is just bliss. Hearing songs I've never heard before that are phenomenal. The best example is Good To Me As I Am To You. That song has everything! Aretha blows every other singer into the weeds. Then it's followed up by Come Back Baby which has that classic groovy bass that signified the late '60s/early '70s.
The Soul GOAT. Or whatever a female goat is I guess. A doe is it? We'll go with that. The Soul DOE.
I think I just heard the best version of People Get Ready. Ain't No Way is the deepest cut with the biggest emotional punch.

Chain, Chain, Chain...... what a start to a classic album, Aretha really was the queen of soul even in 1968. Beautiful songs on this, I believe to be, one of her best records. Really showing her gospel roots that lead to her brilliant soul career. Favourite Tracks the aforementioned "Chain Of Fools" her cover of Curtis Mayfields "People Get Ready" is the definitive version I think. "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman" So many classic soul songs on this album. Love it and Justifiably on this list. Top marks from me!

Enjoyed much more than I expected to.
This album is fantastic from start to finish. There is a great mix of upbeat songs and slower ballads. Aretha commands every note of every song with her one-of-a-kind voice, in a way that only Aretha can do. Her impeccable abilities are so dynamically on display here, flexing crystal clear high notes, rumbling low notes, and everything in between. A special shout-out to (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. This song sends me every time. This is easily one of the greatest songs of all time, and the way she owns every moment and every emotion of this song deserves acknowledgement. I don't even know what else to say that hasn't already been said. Aretha is a one-of-a-kind legend and the queen of soul, and this album is just one reminder among many as to how she snatched that crown.
5.0 + Wonderful. So much power in Aretha's voice and she tempers it so masterfully with that spark of joy and love. This is a record that showcases all of her talents. Despite being featured in a litany of tampon advertisements, "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" still sounds beautiful as ever. "People Get Ready" feels timely as ever. I even like the alternate version of "Chain of Fools" with the extended guitar intro.

Outstanding. A quick 30 minute primer into one of the greatest singers of all-time. Many hits and a few I'd never heard before. "Niki Hoeky" in particular is a banger. But they're all good - literally. It's Aretha, and prime Aretha. A great variety of up-tempo and more soulful/mellow. Just listen, buy it, save it, all of the above. 9/10 5 stars.

Aretha Franklin is in that small number of iconic artists about whom whatever I might say or write feels redundant. In her case, it's for very good reason. What else can I say about the Queen of Soul? This is brilliant, beautiful, and I love it. That's plenty.

13th September 2021 Listened in the car on the way to get my hair cut at jess's. Very timely given there is a biopic currently out about Aretha starring Tiffany haddish. Some absolute classics combined with some gorgeously soft and mellow songs. She's the OG queen.

Cha-Cha-Chaaaiiin of Fools! That's some seriously old music. Very Rock and Roll for the lack of a better description (well only the first songs) (also, it's actually Soul). Of course I heard the name of Aretha Franklin before, but I couldn't name a track for the life of me. Unbelievable voice full of emotion, nice band with lots of range and cool background singers. I like the way her voice sounds - it's like a slightly scratchy live performance with reverb. It's pretty sad that trumpets disappeared from bands in recent times. The music has definitely some South American Rock and Blues vibes to it. It's not the kind of music I'd listen to regularly but it's actually pretty great. Especially for the time it's outstanding. Honestly, I can't justify giving less than five stars - if just for the voice alone.

It’s the Queen of Soul, so the floor is pretty high. We all know what Aretha sounds like, she has one of the best voices of all time, and this was a lightning-fast listen (29 minutes). What’s not to like?! Strong 4/5

Number: 244 Familiarity: Well=versed (4) Rating: 4 Before: ======= Alright! Two 4's in a row. I do like Aretha a lot and I'm assuming this will be a 4 based on a few very recognizable tracks. Searching my favorites by years lists I don't find anything from this album though, nor, anything from Aretha at all. The reason for that is, for the most part, she did not write her own music, or if she did, those songs did not make the cut. After : ======= Pretty sold 4 for me.

You can't go wrong with some Lady Soul. Apart from the obvious killer tracks [Chain of Fools , (You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman], I'd say the best tracks is Come Back, Baby.

She has one of the best singing voices I’ve ever heard. This album is super groovy. It has timeless songwriting. I think it represents this era and genre as well as anything I’ve heard. My favorite songs on first listen were Sweet Sweet Baby and Groovin’, although every track is very memorable and I have You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman stuck in my head like crazy. The writing credits on this album are very impressive, speaking of which.

Just a good time. Nothing but bangers. I truly believe no matter your music taste you'd find something to smile about when listening to this. Also goes without saying but Franklin has one of the greatest voices ever and it's on full display here.
Aretha was on point this morning for my walk. I have listened to this album many times. Nothing particularly exciting stands out about it but the album is a solid choice.

I’ve had quite a bit of underwhelming soul on this list, but this is an example of what the genre can be. Franklin’s voice is brilliant and gives great emotion to the tracks, notably the iconic (You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman. People Get Ready was probably my favourite of the early livelier tracks. I probably didn’t enjoy it quite enough for 5, but a very strong album.
A very enjoyable selection of well-crafted, soulful, and sometimes funky songs. Aretha Franklin’s voice is of course exceptional, but the backing band are tremendous also. A strong 4.
‘Rolling Stone’ magazine’s lists are pretty notorious, but I can absolutely see why they twice named Aretha Franklin the greatest singer of all time. She could sing the phone book and make it sound extraordinary. That said, while there are some true classics here (‘Chain of Fools’ and ‘Natural Woman’ especially), some of the other material, while still good (with absolutely no duds), is probably not quite good enough to take the album into 5 star territory for me. And as with Aretha’s other album on this list, I’m left questioning whether the various covers are better than the originals.

No la conocía a Aretha Franklin hasta escuchar este disco y justo unos días después me vi Green Book donde la mencionan y se sintió bien conocerla, conocer más música de negros. El estilo es medio pop antiguo, de bar medio jazzero o blusero, y la voz de la mina es increible. Me quedo con unos cuantos temones y un disco que voy a escuchar más.

I immediately get in a nice soul vibe in the first song! Het voice gets you from the first seconds. The album represents girlpower, for example in the songs chains of fools, good as me as I am to you and money won’t change you. In my eyes, they talk about the independence of the women in that time. The instrumentation is sooo great! I love the trumpets and jazzy guitar fragments, they seem to tell a story! The gospel choir fits her voice and the songs! Her voice on its own is actually already enough to make the song impressive! Especially the song ‘people get ready’ or ‘Good to me as I am to you’ is a great example of this. You could actually give almost every song as an example hahah. Also the instruments of course! However, I am not immediately enchanted by some tracks it but still are convincing enough. A lot of the songs are also just very fun and good to dance with, I can already imagine the people back then doing it. The instruments go from guitars, to violins, to trumpets, to tubas (which sounds very good on Natural Women). So the album is surely not boring. What sticks with me after listening is the feminism she puts into her songs. In might be indirect but I don’t think it was easy to express individualism as a woman back then! I’ll remember her voice and the amazing soul, jazzy instrumentation! It is also fun a I want to dance on so much songs! Favourite song: Since You’ve Been Gone

God Mother of Soul this has some classics on here her voice pops it's a great album with some great backing instrumentals that compliments everyone and everything
That's how soul/R&B is supposed to sound, not the watered-down autotuned shit that's currently being produced. This isn't really the kind of stuff I'd run out and buy, and I wouldn't put it in my top 1000. But I can see how others would rate it very high.
A little less jazz / piano oriented. More mainstream pop.

This feels like a huge leap forward from the previous Aretha album I heard on this project (I Never Loved a Man the Way I Loved You). This one is chock full of classic songs, great instrumentation, and -- most of all -- her astounding voice. A Natural Woman is clearly the highlight here -- just a brilliant arrangement designed perfectly to anticipate that soaring chorus. Minor quibbles: I can't hear Groovin' without thinking of the superior arrangement by The Young Rascals, although she puts a different spin on it that isn't bad. I could definitely do without the Curtis Mayfield number, "People Get Ready," as well. Her lone writing credit, Since You've Been Gone, is another highlight, as is the indomitable Chain of Fools. Everything here is at least a pretty good listen with enough variety to keep it interesting through the brief runtime. I could easily listen to this twice through, where most double albums are a slog to get through once. Great stuff.

Heard of Aretha obviously, never listened to an album. Great opener with chain of fools. Still hear this song today for good reason. Banger. Great vocals and really nice backing track. Really good writing on money won’t change. Awesome horn solo. Good production again. Wish it was longer honestly. More of the same on people get ready. I like the change of pace. Awesome subtle guitar on this one. Really nice bass line on Niki hoeky. Sick production all around. Good story telling too. Natural woman is another banger. Great writing on this one. Simple but effective production. Again biggest complaint is i wish it was longer. Better production on sweet sweet baby. Another banger. Really catchy chorus. Love the horns again. Slowing it down again on good to me. Awesome guitar to open it., and throughout. Best part of the song aside from the singing. Come back baby was fine. Nothing really noteworthy about it. Sick organ on groovin. Really good song writing again. Ain’t no way is very emotional. Really good writing. Nice piano. Good song to close out with. Really impressed by this album, fully understand the Aretha hype. Just a wonderful vocalist. I recommend listening to this album if you never have before. Top tier soul music. 4.4/5 stars. 5 more songs as good as what’s on their and it’s a 5/5.

What an amazing voice, most of these songs are great
I loved, loved, loved the funkier soul stuff like “Chain of Fools,” “Come Back Baby,” and “(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You’ve Been Gone.” Also, of course, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” I liked the slower songs, but on a second listen I found myself skipping ahead on some of them when they were half-done. Still, what a voice she had! Must have been amazing to see live.
10 songs, 30 minutes and Lady Soul tellin' you how it is. This chain of fools linking two and two and two, maybe you find one of those links is you. Maybe time is taking you on or maybe you can hear all the other ways this record bops — people get ready there's a train a comin' (and it's on twin tracks of focused songwriting and powerful singing).

Beautiful beautiful music. Just loving this. Great music but she's kinda hootin and hollerin and I'm so not in the right headspace for that. Love this though. Aretha Franklin was 25 years old. She recorded three albums in 1968 alone. Martin Luther King was assassinated in April of that year, Robert F. Kennedy in June, and America was watching cities burn on the evening news while simultaneously making Lady Soul her second consecutive number one R&B album. Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithfull, who were at the time the most famous couple in swinging London and had opinions about everything, summarized her voice as follows: Aretha is the voice of God. This was not hyperbole. This was a weather report. The album opens with Chain of Fools, which arrives on the back of Joe South's Gretsch guitar tremolo like a physical object coming through the speakers before Aretha has sung a single word. This is the correct way to open a record for someone who needs a great musical arrangement to fully commit, and Lady Soul understood this assignment before the term existed. The horns are enormous. The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section is so tight it should be studied in universities. Eric Clapton appears as a session musician on one track, behaves himself professionally, plays well, and leaves without incident, which at this point in our series constitutes remarkable personal growth. A Natural Woman was written by Carole King, who I gave 3 stars to, based on a title coined by producer Jerry Wexler, who handed it to Aretha and watched her turn it into something so far beyond the original that calling it a cover feels like calling Niagara Falls a puddle. Carole King later watched Aretha perform it at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2015 and was visibly reduced to tears in the audience. This is the correct response and also the most accurate critical review of what Aretha does to other people's songs. The album runs 29 minutes and 51 seconds. It contains three top ten hits and a fourth that made the top twenty. It influenced Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, and essentially every female vocalist who came after it. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone routinely places it among the greatest albums ever made. Whitney owes it a tithe. Beyoncé owes it several. Soul music from 1968 is not my most natural daily listening habitat. And yet Lady Soul hits with a physicality and an emotional directness that bypasses genre entirely. This is not a record that asks for your patience or your historical context. It grabs you by the lapels in the first eight bars and does not let go for half an hour. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Find out what it means to me. It means a 4. 4 out of 5. One star for Chain of Fools, which arrives like a freight train with impeccable taste. One for A Natural Woman, which is the greatest thing anyone has ever done with a Carole King song including Carole King. One for the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, who are the finest collection of musicians to appear in this series and who deserve every accolade they have never quite received. One for Aretha Franklin, who was 25 years old, recorded three albums in a single year, and still found time to be the voice of God. The fifth star exists somewhere in the universe but belongs to Aretha alone and was never ours to give.
