Aretha!
CHAIN CHAIN CHAAAAAAIIN
such a lovely album!!!! I liked every song!!! 8/10
Classic soul music
WHAT A VOICE!
Tolle starke Stimme dieser Frau und die Songs waren cool
Gewaltige Stimme, schöne Musik.
Aretha Franklin is one the best vocalists to ever do it and this record just shows that. She sounds spectacular throughout and it’s just a beautiful listen!
Very nice album, it creates good athmosphere and is just very nice having it in the background while doing other things. Some songs are quite jammy and others are pretty chill, but overall a great album.
Solid. Love me some old school MoTown. 4.5⭐️
Classic R&B/soul for sure.....just not a lot of replay-ability for me. 4.5
Makes you want to dance. 4 out 5 stars
A very good album! I would definitely listen to that one again. Could be great on vinyl, I think.
oh yeah sing it girl
Very good.
This is tough. Do I rate it as I imagine it felt back when I came out? Cause then it would be a 5. Do I rate it in its modern context where it is no longer as revolutionary as it was in the late 60’s? I can’t ignore the flow of time and history so imma go with a 4. Obviously incredible voice, the arrangements are well done, but they’re very simple which makes sense to let Aretha’s voice shine, but I dunno I find that a little boring.
great showcase of her voice. pitch, delivery, emotion are all spot on. 4.5 stars
Great
big soul mama!
Her voice is incredible with passion in the soulful delivery
Just a classic, generally considered one of her best. What a voice and oozing confidence following the previous two albums going into the R&B charts at no.1. Despite most of these songs not being penned by her, she fully embodies them making them her own.
Powerful
Great voice. Lot’s of memories.
So freaking good. Only complaint is that technology of that era doesn't capture the full range of Franklin.
Very strong. A couple of ballads but these work as they punctuate an album that is largely energetic and fun (in sound if not always lyrically)
This is a fun listen. Love the funky wah wah guitar on Chain of Fools. Some of my favourite r and b songs on this too. People Get Ready always gets me in the feels.
Legend. This deserves to be on the list
The Queen of Soul on display! Had heard some of these songs before but not all
Listened via YouTube music in the truck and on IPhone headphones. So many classics on one album. She is the queen and everyone is just doing poor imitations.
I guess it's great but I'm kind of sick of all those songs
One of the greatest singers of all time, no question.
Queen of soul
this was EXACTLY what i needed at like 5pm after a long friday work shift.... beautiful voice aretha has, feat the better version of a bunch of people have covered. what a queen <3
This girl is an absolute queen, such a dynamic and incredible voice of hers backed by such brilliant musicians. Loved it, and that Chain of Fools song is so good.
Classic! Impossible not to like this. Can't not think of Aunt Selma and Jub-Jub when I hear "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman."
There's a great video of Aretha being asked by a reporter for her views on various other young singers. When Taylor Swift's name is mentioned, all she does is comment on what great gowns she wears. If anyone else did this it could come across as catty, but this is Aretha, she can say whatever she damm likes.
1001 ALBUMS YOU MUST HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE #8 Ah yes, Aretha Franklin, A singer who I'm not too familiar with, only really knowing "Respect", but have heard the name thrown around a lot in terms of the best female singers of all time, and thanks to the 1001 Albums Generator, I have been bestowed with the with "Lady Soul", her 1968 record. And Aretha is definitely deserving of the title "Queen of Soul", her voice is powerful, yet beautiful, and the instrumentals really fit her vocal style. Even if it was a little short, I still really enjoyed this. Overall, this is a great record, it's a nice short n sweet experience that has aged amazingly. Aretha Franklin is truly the Queen of Soul. Overall Score: 80 / 100 Favorite Tracks: A Natural Woman, Groovin', Ain't No Way.
A legendary voice. Can't deny she sounds great, but not what I would choose to listen to ever.
Una bomba, genial, sublime. No es mi estilo pero se aprecia su señoría. Nota: 3.7
bq
An excellent album form the "Queen of Soul". Probably one of the best singers I've heard, and with great instrumentation make every track a groovy listen. Not much else to say except it's just plain good. Notable Tracks: People Get Ready, Niki Hoeky, Good To Me As I Am To You, Groovin'
Very good soul album. Aretha is a legend.
Prachtig album. Misschien wel het beste van Aretha Franklin. Na N.W.A. (het album van gisteren) veel te luid door de living te knallen, was dit ook wel een welkom gegeven voor de sfeer thuis. Merci, Aretha! 4.2
What is there to say that hasn't already been said so many times? Aretha Franklin is simply the best to ever do it. The Queen of Soul, she comes at each song with an easy intensity that makes you feel as if she has always been doing this at the level she does it. The emotion, the power, the intensity that flows through her voice is unmatched by any other singer. It sounds effortless, natural for her to do it. Nobody did it like her. As an album, this does suffer somewhat from feeling more like an amalgamation of songs by Aretha and less like a cohesive album. These songs could've been recorded over a couple of years and thrown together like a compilation album. I don't really know how these songs tie together except that they each show off her incredible vocal talent. I guess when you're Aretha Franklin, that's enough. What more do you really need? The instrumental arrangements are stellar though. You have a couple of options when arranging and selecting songs for an album that revolves around showcasing the singer's talents. You can have the arrangements be sparse and out of the way, clearing the stage for the singer to shine. Or you can have them match her intensity, meeting her energy and adding to it, building on the already strong talent. This album smartly went with the latter, and it so much better for it. The entire thing feels energetic and fun, and the instrumentals compliment her vocals perfectly. At times, it's absolutely electric. Overall, this album is an excellent showcase for the talents of one of the world's most gifted singers. Aretha Franklin was one of the most complete and talented singers of her time, and this album serves as a wonderful tribute to that immense talent. Four stars. Standout Tracks: Chain of Fools, Money Won't Change You, (You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman, (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone, Good to Me as I Am to You, Come Back Baby
One of the greatest voices of all time, and good tunes … but it doesn’t really excite me. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t particularly love it.
Ohhh yeh
Insanely good. Wow. “Ain’t No Way” is right!
This album is so sexy that I can overlook the hard-panned production. Favourite tracks: Chain of Fools, Niki Hoeky, Groovin', Natural Woman (mono)
Großartiges Soul-Album.
It's very good. Slightly old-fashioned now, but still got a little fire in the belly. Classy arrangements, great vocals.
It’s a classic! Love it
Quality from start to finish
She’s amazing.
Great vocalist with some nice backing instrumentals. 7/10
Solid OG pop music. What a great voice
Regarded as maybe the greatest singer of all time. This album makes that almost impossible to argue.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Super cool, c'est la boss ! 3/4 likes. Come back baby!!!
Terrific. I can’t say that I listen to a lot of soul music. Listening to this entire album may change that. Awesome band and backing vocals. LOVE that the instruments are mixed up. All bangers.
Once in a generation soul singer, some amazing backing tracks, only thing I think you can dock it for is a lack of variety. It’s not lighting my world on fire, but it might be hard to expect that from a 60s album.
Great album
An absolute powerhouse! Perfect album length. Classic Aretha
What a voice!
queen of soul bechund kategorisch nöd weniger als 4, 5 isch im hüütige mood maybe chli krass drigrätscht drum einigemer eus uf 4 brava aretha! <3
Aretha Franklin is an amazing singer, and the instrumentation is great enough to where it keeps every song interesting
One hell of a singer. Few ladies could belt out like she could.
The queen of soul, gotta check out more of her music
I remember when Franklin died. That was when I knew nothing about her. "Lady Soul" is an exceptional album. There isn't a bad song on it. This album continues my great run. 4 stars for "Lady Soul".
What a voice
This was a lovely listen, could’ve gone again when it was finished
Incredible Aretha, with the instrumentation to back it up. Will be listening to this again. -Chain of Fools -People Get Ready -(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman
super good
For the entirety of my life until now, I've thought she was singing "Change change chaaaaange... Change in you" or something like that. And then I saw the song's title and realized what was going on. Being a human is amazing. "Ain't No Way" had an organ, not a theramin, right? What's that high pitch? Is that singing? Is that a voice? Is that a human voice?
What's not to like in this one?
classic
Aretha. Respect. 5⭐️
Hell of a Lady
A wonderful soul record from Lady Soul herself.
Aretha Franklin is not the Queen of Soul for nothing.
Easy 4 stars
Quite short spanning only 30 minutes though ten songs I suppose it is a typical LP for the decade and origin, although I would’ve expected two more. Aretha’s voice gives a different style to classics, no version better than the other. Great use of background vocals, created a mix of her voice and instruments included. Standouts: Chain of Fools, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Come Back Baby and Sweet Sweet Baby. Honorable mention: People Get Ready and Good to Me As I Am to You. Rating: 8.0/10, really enjoyable songs I rank this really high overall.
Absolutely gorgeous.
Timeless…
I LOVE the Lady of Soul!
It has a couple great classics.
A solid soul album. 8.8/10 Best Track: "Chain of Fools"
SOUL.
Wonderful solid album.
Incredible!
Hard not to like – the voice being what it is, which is fantastic – even if some of the arrangements and playing feel a bit muddled and/or overdone. All the known cuts deliver the goods – "Chain of Fools," "Natural Woman," "Groovin" and "People Get Ready." That soaring coo in"Ain't No Way" is definitely a sound of the era. Clapton solo cool and understated. One can't say as definitively as the editors do that this record is superior to the previous two, but okay – they are a continuum of comparably high quality.
ok
I didn’t expect so many song I already knew on this album :)
Groovy. I hadn't heard most of the songs on this album. Great voice.
Nice album
Unreal pipes on ol' Aretha
Vocals are amazing. Chill album to listen to.
🐐
Don't typically listen to soul but always enjoyed it. Great album with some classics
Classic Soul. Aretha never fails to deliver. I think I like her version of "Groovin'" better than the Young Rascals.
Aretha is a certified bad bitch
Great album
Really good, a few less memorable tracks
Buy this one
Goeie klassieker - wat een stem
The Queen of Soul.... that voice
Mmm good stuff.
Dang, alright. Didn't expect to groove to this as much as I did but this is a good batch of songs. Great vocals, surprisingly excellent backing band (I want to fist bump the bass player especially) and some tasty drums for me to dig my brain into. Will relisten.
Nearly all her hits on one record. Great voice, love the music, but just a fan of hers. Not a huge fan, just a regular fan. Great record.
4/5
8/10 yeah, not something I would have sought out, but I really liked it 3-28-2025
Powerful voice, soulful lyrics. Good stuff
Sean Tanos Today at 11:13 AM This is a tough one for me. Is Aretha a wonderful vocalist? Yes. Does this album contain big hits? Yes. Could it stand on its own now 60 years later? Yes to that too. It meets the criteria for a 5 star album, but I didn't enjoy it. I actively dislike the opening track on the album (Chain of Fools), and Natural Woman is so overplayed and corporatized that I can't enjoy it either. I can see the lasting legacy of the album though, and appreciate that it's my own biases bringing this album down.
Lady Soul is Aretha Franklin in full command of her powers, delivering a collection of songs that blend gospel, soul, and R&B with total confidence. The album opens strong with Chain of Fools and doesn’t let up, featuring classics like Ain’t No Way and the timeless (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. The Muscle Shoals rhythm section keeps things tight, while Aretha’s voice soars, growls, and glides with unmatched emotion. Every performance feels lived-in and deeply felt, even on the lesser-known tracks. While a couple of songs don’t quite match the brilliance of the hits, the overall quality and emotional range of the album make it one of her strongest. It’s rich, powerful, and undeniably soulful, with Aretha turning every line into something personal. Lady Soul may not be perfect front to back, but it’s packed with iconic moments and shows exactly why she earned the title Queen of Soul.
Just an excellent record from one of the best of all time.
I’ve never listened to an Aretha Franklin album but this I enjoyed.
What a voice! There were a few songs that I recognised on here. The others were a joy to discover A very nice album 4 ⭐️
Classic soul/R&B by a classic voice. Great to really focus on these tunes and appreciate the artistry here.
I probably shouldn't have followed up Imperial Triumphant's new album with this. This is filled with classic hits from a legend. Nothing to say about it but 4.
Sublime, powerful voice. Some absolute classics here, as well as some tracks that were new to me. Not a bad song in the bunch.
This is another 'they don't make em how they used to' type deal. Aretha seems to sing hard things effortlessly. The backing band is killiee also. What an incredible contrast between this and today's pop music. She sounds good across multiple genres on the album.
Well this is an easy one to crank out. A punchy play time under 30 minutes. Singular rambunctious soul, immediately infectious urge to dance, and energized do more reviews!
Hey this lady can really sing. I think she may be going places.
Another great soul album from the 60s. I always love them.
Really good classic R&B. If this genre was a little bit more in my personal wheelhouse it might be a 5, but it's very good and there are some landmarks on it like "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" and "Chain of Fools."
Never felt boring, great for driving.
++: Chain of Fools, Money Won't Change You, Niki Hoeky, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone, Good to Me As I Am To You, Come Back Baby, Ain't No Way +: People Get Ready, Groovin' 9,5/10
Great some voice on the fuckin gal
Really good and brings back some good memories
She’s great isn’t she!
Great album
legendary vocalist, some tracks aren't my favorite tho
Great woman
It's old school cool.
Another tossup between 4 and 5 for me, and for shame, I do prefer Carole King’s version of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” because I have a soft spot for songwriters getting to perform their own work. Also really made me look forward to whenever Tapestry will show up on this list
I mean, it's hard to rate this when it's permeated through almost every facet of culture.
Really enjoyed this some fantastic songs 8/10
Excellent album but personally not much struck a huge chord with me. I'll be coming back to this again though and I'll see what grips me in future listens. It is interesting to finally listen to Natural Woman after knowing the Carole King version front to back. I definitely don't prefer Aretha's version but that might just be from a difference of familiarity. Highlight: Chain of Fools (the full bonus song is even better in my opinion)
A real vibe actually
Enjoyed this!
ну соул хороший уверенный старый архивный, по всей видимости легендарный, но я позер
not heard this before but it was tuff🗣️🗣️ ts not exactly my type shi but it was good
don’t listen to a lot of soul usually but this is a really good album!
Jammin
Aretha, lady soul...what else? One of the most gifted R&B voices shines through the album...soulful, joyful, it's healing.
Truly and amazing album if it wasn’t for the fact that sometimes the singing comes from one headphone instead of two (depends on the song) it would be perfect
One of Aretha Franklin’s finest. Aside from the somewhat average production quality, everything is flawless. This album - among few others from her - blows away all the pale imitations up to today—who, by the way, readily acknowledge that Aretha was and remains THE queen. On top of that, blues and soul fuse in a way rarely heard since in soul music. An ode to love set against a backdrop of resistance to racial and gender oppression. To me, a landmark of the genre and I really enjoy it.
classic
Awesome, what an album.
Undeniably brilliant, and much more resonant to me than the first Franklin album I drew on this generator. I can't imagine myself going back to it much, but it's clearly masterful.
4.5/5
Eu gostei de algumas músicas, principalmente as mais conhecidas
kolmetoista kirottua kanaa kävelivät kadulla. pikkusen runoutta sinne. pikhasen runoilua tässä raikkaassa lauantaiaamusella. kysykää ihmisiltä: milloin viimeksi runoilitte aamulla. millon viimeksi tuli aamurunoiltuja. odota vastausta ja kuuntele. sitten kysy tämä ihmisiltä: milloin puhelinta plärättiin aamulla, ja milloin viimeksi plärättiin sitä puhelinta aamusella? sitten odota vastausta. ja sitten vertaile vastauksia. btw paska produktio ja incredublous voice. people get ready
Although I didn't love this enough for 5 stars, it's still incredible that Aretha can make me like music that would usually have me running for the door.
Classic
ок
I like very very good, soulful
Solid soul album, some of Aretha's best songs on here. And shout out to Clapton for a guest appearance https://youtu.be/kwJFwhAuK2A?si=OIG9EqOoBG1TkOat
So old yet it sounds so.. modern ?? I have the feeling this very album paved the way for the future of soul music. Every song is good wtf
This is a great album! Aretha Franklin is a great artist, and this album is good top to bottom. Already had one track from this album in my favorites, and now I have two. 4/5.
Classic
Mmm good stuff.
Classic for sure. Not necessarily something I'd think to put on, but I won't complain when I hear it.
Funkier than I thought! Amazing album, need to re-listen. 4.5
The hits are huge, the deep cuts very solid.
4.5. An essential album
yes please
All killer, no filler by the undisputed Queen of Soul. Absolutely deserves its status as an all-time classic record in the genre and beyond. Looking forward to her other albums on the list.
Nuria: histórico. Jaime: está bien cansado pero lo valora con 4 sobre 5, muy bien.
I got my soul back!
Good music thf will listen to more
Goated, multiple classics
Hard to go wrong with Aretha. Weirdly, this album doesn’t hit me quite as nicely as I’ve Never Loved a Man… But there are still some real showstoppers here. I mean this feels unarguable. Just a great album from a great artist.
Aretha is amazing. This album is full of really solid blues/soul songs, but what really makes them shine are her performances and energy. No real low points on this for me, other than a few stretches where things felt a bit same-y. 8.5/10
The album has a great, iconic vibe. "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" had a pretty interesting string part. The arrangements are very competent (pretty much perfect) throughout the album, and the mix is extremely clear. The riffs in "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone" were very sick. The fact that almost all of the songs end with fade-outs was kind of repetitive. Also, even though all the songs are quite short, sometimes they felt drawn-out — maybe it's just because I'm tired while listening to it(?). "Ain't No Way" is a beautiful way to end the album—except for the fade-out. :( Aretha's singing was expressive and tasteful, and, along with the carefully composed accompaniment, gives the album a very high-quality sound. However, the thing with the fade-outs and the fact that I did not really care for a few songs means that I don't see myself re-listening to the whole thing, but probably I'd listen back to a few songs individually.
Chain of Fools - 5/5 Money Won't Change You - 3/5 People Get Ready - 4/5 Niki Hoeky - 3/5 (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman - 5/5 (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone - 5/5 Good to Me as I Am to You - 3/5 Come Back Baby - 3/5 Groovin' - 3/5 Ain't No Way - 5/5 Average score: 3.9/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Nice but not my favourite stuff of hers
Like she is Aretha. That alone warrants a high score. Every song is great. I don’t think that I can give it a 5 though. Just cause I doubt I will be adding this album to my regular play list. I still would consider this a high 4.
It’s Aretha Franklin. Good stuff.
Lovely couple of starting tracks, Chain of Fools is a banger. Really all around lovely album, love her voice and the vibes are excellent. Easy listening for sure.
If you ever had any doubts that Aretha Franklin was the Queen of Soul then this album will lay them to rest. Starting with the definitive version of Chain of Fools, Aretha’s voice swoops and soars with effortless grace. These are mostly secular songs but she also includes a gospel track, People Get Ready, for old times sake, in case y’all could do with some churchin’ up. Fun fact - one of the backing singers is Cissy Houston, mother of Whitney!
I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but she has such a voice and the music is really good too.
Good soul, enjoyed
Sounds good but I am still not into it after a few years
The most popular song is by far the lamest on the album. There are some total bangers on this album and damn what a voice. Better than expected
Incredible.
Precioso sonido soul. Producción muy sencilla y poco recargada lo que hace que la voz esté en primer plano. Melodías vocales sencillas que sólo explotan 3n momentos muy puntuales. Y el disco tiene 2 temas clásicos!
Loved it. Last track best track.
Great upbeat album
4.5, lots of classics on this one.
A classic voice for sure! The hits are the stars here. The rest is really good too, but don’t stand out next to heavy hitters like “Chain of Fools.”
That voice!!!
Classic.
The Queen
Great album, can’t beat Aretha’s voice.
What a voice. Classic songs. Wonderful album
Aretha Franklin's singing voice is something powerful. I definitely shivered at more than a few points while listening to this. she's often imitated but never duplicated, as they say. "Chain of Fools" and "A Natural Woman" have been butchered by many a cover artist, but the genuine article reminds you just how brilliant they truly are. most of my favorite soul music leans heavily on influences from classic jazz and, eventually, fusion; this earlier, Southern example of the style leans more heavily on the blues, with a little bit of rock n' roll in there for good measure. there's even an Eric Clapton jumpscare on side B! spooOOOOky! lots of these sixties albums have been just under half an hour in length, which is a really interesting amount of time. it's a duration that, nowadays, a lot of pop artists think of as being too short to make fully cohesive as an LP-length project or, if they're cynical, game the streaming algorithms in their favor. but, for whatever reason, I really think it works for albums like Lady Soul. things really started to increase in size and scope as the seventies rolled on, which had its positives, but it's nice to be able to squeeze a whole album into a standard lunch break. decent 7/10.
Está negra es una genia. La voz y el swing que tiene mamaaaa.
One of the best records of one of the best recorded voices in music history.
Quality
fast and to the fucking point. Love it.
Nice!
Nelose, nije moj dir, ali mozda koja pisma moze na playlistu
TIL this is where Tomika got that song in School of Rock (2003)! Track #11 not Track #1, although they are the same song
i dont think i connect to this album at all, not my sort of music, but you really can't deny how great it is. absolutely flawless
solid jazz album. liked the variety
I was never the biggest fan but I gotta admit that the deep cuts on here really slap.
Aretha takes it to church every single time. This gorgeous woman sings with every ounce of power and life within her. Straight fire. Outside of the vocals this album has some of the funkiest bass lines. Really great listen.
7.5/10 Highlights: Money Won't Change You Natural Woman Chain of Fools Niki Hoeky
Muito bom!
Lady Soul has got herself a genuine voice. Some recognizable hits, though she’s beltin’ it out from start to finish. We’ll be listening to her yet again (after it’s only 1968 and early in her career.) Probably gonna be one of her live albums. This one comes in at 4.2*s) The lady can sing…
urethra franklin!!
Just really good. Maybe even a 4.5, but I'm giving it a 4 cause I have to
Great.
Успокаивающая музыка, приятный голос, но не мой жанр
It’s got that classic 60’s sound (that I’m admittedly not a huge fan of) but she’s a GOAT for a reason.
She's the queen for a reason
Aptly named. Recording is a little dated, but the arrangements are great. And, as always, what a voice.
Beautiful stuff. A reminder of why Aretha is one of the greatest.
Really enjoyed it. I didn't realize her music could be so funky. The basslines in particular were quite groovy, and of course her voice is just amazing.
Sturluð söngkona. Geggjuð plata sem rennur alltaf vel í gegn. Gott soul slær flestu við IMO.
Alveg einstök söngkona. Mjög þægileg og góð plata í heild.
The first 45 seconds of vamping groove (edited out of the single version) changes the context of the familiar and absolute classic "Chain of Fools" and sets an ominous tone for the song that starts this 1968 soul gem. Despite this and other classic songs/performances ("Natural Woman"), this doesn't feel like a cohesive album. Aretha never sounds anything less than amazing, but, for instance, going from the emotional beauty of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" into the goofball "Niki Hoeky" is just odd. "Groovin'" is here too for some reason, and doesn't really improve the original. The last song is what I don't like about when r&b singers "go too far". Regardless, this album is worth having for the two incredible singles alone.
Some really great songs and a powerful album overall. I enjoyed this one.
An incredible voice; an incredible talent. Aretha Franklin's Lady Soul is a statement: "Chain of Fools", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" are the major hits, but honestly the whole album will have you groovin'.
4 STARS!!!
9/10, rounding down. This is my favourite genre in music so uhh, yeah! I am rating this high
A classic soul album by aretha franklin, solid overall but not as many highs as other albums
Loved it! Several of her hits, but she just has such a lovely voice, I dug the whole record start to finish.
Raw, soulful and fun. Overall a solid classic.
Aretha Franklin is certainly one of the canon of soul singers. There is nothing to "rate" really. She is legend. I find that I am not as moved as many merely by the fact I am not particularly big on the genre. It has nothing to do with her pure talent or appeal. I was listening and felt like I would be blown away if I was more specifically interested, or my mood was different. Thus "rating" something like this is difficult. It is brilliant and amazing on one hand, and sort of specific as a genre and won't automatically suit the mood of the room. I suppose that is how music works. If nothing else it is a part of music history worth exploring.
Warm colorful soulful Beautiful vocals Great instrumentals
Lovely album, I liked it more than the previous Aretha Franklin album, though that one was still good. This one felt like it swung harder.
Sing it grrl Worthy of her Queen of Soul title
I'm rating this a 4, which is a number less the 5 but greater than 3. 4 (spelled F O U R) is an even number, and interestingly, it is twice as many as the number 2. It is also the only number, in English, to be spelled with the same number of letters as the number itself. Further to this, it is the fourth number to follow the number zero... wait, is zero a number? Or is it the absence of numbers?.. like the colour black.. which is the absence of colour, instead of actually being a colour. Does that mean black people don't exist? Contrary to what you might read on some far-right forums, this isn't true and Aretha has done wonders to dispel this myth, with an album bursting with more soul than you could shake a white stick at.. a white stick, incidentally would be a stick made up of all colours.. ironically blind people use them. But then again, who needs sight, when you can listen to Aretha.
28/11/24 This is a good album.
toller sound aus den 60/70er - wenn nur mehr künstler noch heute den mut und das können für simple arrangements und puren sound hätten. arethas stimme ist wundervoll, schwer heute nur einen song zu wählen, es hat einige tolle davon.
Queen Aretha, we bow.
A great palate cleanser after the corporate committee based musings of Beyoncé and Friends.
Takes you straight back to the 60s and makes me feel like a natural woman.
An R&B classic
Every nice thing written about this lady has to be true. The richness of her voice.... Golly, so wonderful
Even as somebody who is generally apathetic towards Soul and most 50s music in general, this was kind of impossible to not enjoy. Short, sweet and catchy. "Chain of Fools" is so good that they put it on the album twice. Banger.
DOPE
Wow, I don't even know what to say. I didn't expect to like this as much as I did. Great album.
Never listened to a full Aretha album, man she's got pipes. I also love the Mo-Town production style, so many harmonies and cool arrangements and stuff. It's interesting how short all of these songs are, definitely wish some of them had more to them, I guess short and sweet is cool though. Interesting that almost all of the songs fade out instead of having an actual ending.
Great jazz, fantastrc voice
She seriously had the best voice ever, and basically each song she touched was tailor made for her inflections. B+
So many classics
Groovy, baby. Chain of fools is soooo good. 4/5
Great album, maybe a bit short. I hadn't heard Chain of Fools before so the album was off to a great start right away. Aretha Franklin has a great voice and wields it well throughout this album.
This lady is awesome
love obviously…chain of fools is definitely in the top 25 best songs ever in the world. idk i agree with everything laura said but i don’t wanna be a copycatter….
LOVE!! Love Chain of Fools, absolutely one of the best songs ever....it's still definitely my favorite even after hearing the rest of the album (which I did like though). Not many thoughts about this I guess other than It's Very Good
This is why Aretha is a legend! 40 minutes that seemed like 4. This is good music!
What a voice. Great album, not something I would put on but well enjoyed, production was very tinny annoyingly. Might be the version on youtube music?
Beautiful! What a voice! Such a huge vocal range. Some great songs on here including some classics such as (you make me feel like) a natural woman which was composed by the brilliant Carole King. You can't be a music fan and not be able to appreciate a bit of Aretha. It's just a shame that some of it sounds like it was recorded in a garden shed
Solid stuff. This is true soul music. Hugely influential. Definitely belongs in the book.
Her voice is so incredible I’m tempted to give it 5 stars, but the gospel takes it down a notch.
I mean it's Aretha Franklin, it's gonna be great. Although it's not exactly my favorite genre of music, I always appreciate someone with this kind of ability. Great voice, great musicians, great sound. I feel like this is one of the records that, regardless of your musical taste, everyone will appreciate. 4/5
This was even better than the previous Aretha album in my opinion. This just hit perfect for a Monday morning. Chain of Fools and Natural Woman were great to hear in context of the rest of the album. I can see how Aretha blew up in 1967-1968 with these releases and probably never reached those heights again but she kept on making music and displaying that incredible voice for another 50 years. I see why she was crowned and the Queen's legacy lives on!
Great songs, great voice, classic soul sound. Not much to dislike here.
Favorite Track: (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman
Aretha Franklin is just a great singer. It’s not perfect, but it’s good that she has a couple of albums here (and that her full albums are still good enough to deserve inclusion).
-her voice is majestic as hell and none of the songs really stood out to me as bad. I’m glad this challenge/project thing has turned me on to 1960s soul and jazz because they’ve been some of the most consistently enjoyable genres for me. RIP Aretha -Favorites are Chain Of Fools, Niki Hoeky, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, and Come Back Baby
Me gusta mucho
I definitely know Aretha. Literally what the album is the Lady of Soul. Stoked to check out this allbum.
bom p caralho
pedrada. que vozerão do carai
Just one of the greatest vocalists of all time at their peak. I think I prefer the two albums on either side of this one, but this is a solid 4
I mean this opens with a banger, and is truly ,objectively, an excellent album. I just feel like it contains some of the pap of the time, buy maybe that's an era thang.
obviously very good
Aretha could probably sing the dictionary and find a way to make it a must-listen. This one has some of her most well-known songs, including the opener "Chain of Fools" and the legendary "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" (I'm also partial to the Carole King version that's on Tapestry, she did write the song after all). "People Get Ready" also might showcase her voice as well as any of her songs too, it's beautiful. On the whole, while this was highly enjoyable, I felt that it was just a little less compelling to me than I Never Loved a Man the Way I Loved You (album #41 for me). I can't even really say why because her voice is the main attraction here and it's as good as ever, but it is what it is. These ratings are mostly vibes anyway, so that's what we're leaning on. I might be wrong. Favorite song: (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman Other: Chain of Fools, People Get Ready, Niki Hoeky, (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone, Good to Me as I am to You, Groovin', Ain't No Way 10/15/24
Listened to most of it while taking the bus home from school one evening. Comfortable and happy feels.
Aretha is great. Overall good album, but not my favorite one.
85% Best: Chain of Fools; Niki Hoeky; (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman; (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone; Groovin' Must-Hear? Sure
Probably her best album, it's shorter than previous album that had some big highlights but lulls after the A-Side, but this one keeps it shorter and is consistently great.
Great R&B/soul record
Good stuff. No notes. I feel like I'm cheating it by going 4/5 but, as much as I like it, 5/5 feels a bit much.
The queen, do I need to say more?
Obviously a household name!! But I have to say I’ve never put on an Aretha Franklin record. So I’m really exited to get into her discography today. Update: I’m on “Ain’t No Way” and have been completely immersed. Love it! It’s not what I would normally listen to but she’s an undeniable powerhouse
Excellent album.
Wow that was pretty great
Classic album. Many of the tracks I've heard a million times over the years. Overall very good album. I really enjoyed it.
4-
Fun listen. An incredible vocal performance on an album that is tailor-made to show off her vocal chops. However, besides her performance I don't think the album was particularly novel or really pushes the R&B / soul envelope, even for its time. 7.5/10 if I could, but will round that off to a 4/5 here.
Aretha got bangers for sure, can’t help but move to some of these songs.
Great classi!
Chain of Fools just hits right in the soul and is a can't skip song. This song does indeed make me feel like a natural woman. I'll never forget my first exposure to Aretha, which was the Blues Brother, and she's always been a great staple. Mo-town did so much for music; I don't think most people realize its impact.
Great album. Standout songs: Chain of Fools You Make me Feel like a Natural Woman Come Back Baby
One of the greatest
Very good, but I wasn't stunned. Obvious respect to the queen though.
quite pleasant
хочу себе на винил, прям хочу хочу хочу хочу
Who doesn’t like a bit of Aretha? Her version of (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman was the first one I heard, and it came as a big surprise to me when I found out it was written by Carole King. I adore how different both versions sound though, each absolutely bringing their own style. The rest of the album has a very similar sound and is an enjoyable listen, but did seem to end sooner than I wanted it to. I guess it’s not a bad thing to be left wanting more.
